That Time Oprah Came to My House to Campaign

According to the Atlanta paper this is a historical vote. So Oprah is here to support a "historic vote". Do we have to make this a vote for the sake of historical precedent? It's like the "special place in hell" for women who didn't vote for Hilary Clinton... this is no reason to vote for anyone. We see different, changing sides to Abrams with every sound bite and it isn't a comfortable feeling: how to know her real agenda? She's positioned herself as a friend of the illegal immigrant community and that is, frankly, enough to cross her off my list. What else? I'm not even bothering to pay attention.

My black African American ancestors were enslaved just east of Atlanta until General William Tecumseh Sherman came by on the way to Savannah. Instead of remaining on the land where they were owned by and bred with my white Georgia European ancestors, they made a symbolic and real exodus to new communities. Where they remained separate and unequal through Reconstruction and the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments and Plessy v Ferguson and the reign of the Confederate white supremacist Democrat Virginia bigot President Thomas Woodrow Wilson. My college educated paternal grandparents fled Atlanta Georgia for the South Side of Chicago in the summer of 1930 with their kids including my father. After the teenage son of a friend was shot to death in front of his mother by a white man for allegedly sassing a white woman. And nothing happened to the white man. But many of members of my family remained in Georgia. And their heirs live there today. Primarily in and around Atlanta. They are avid supporters of Stacey Abrams. I attended a family reunion in Atlanta this past summer. They are really fired up and ready to go.

@Blackmamba I've paid attn to your posts for many years now, and I just have to tell you how much I like you and respect you. I keep crying tonight over the state of our country. I feel helpless in knowing how to bring change. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for sharing this story. May God pls be God of this nation and humble us all, jusdge us all, punish those of us who shd be punished, but most important, simple open our eyes to god's grace. CS Lewis said "The harshness of God is kinder than the softness of humans". Amen.

@Maggie - Oprah, Obama and the rest of us don't need to evangelize and convert those who disagree. We just need to show up. The challenge is as simple as getting out the vote. The winner in most U.S. elections is the side that shows up. It really is that simple.

Ms. Jones, now get out there and vote. No matter the lines.
Thomas M (St. Louis)
That would be so great...since we know a TV personality can win the White House, how about one that actually started out as and stands up for the little person?

Mike Pence is so dumb! Does he really believe he is as popular as Oprah which is what he stated in Georgia yesterday? How nice it was to show him wrong by comparing the size of the audiences.

I admire Winfrey because she has shared her wealth and because she is a champion of those who are not well served by our bought off politicians.

Oprah is serious about change, and it is reflected in her absolute denial when she is asked to run for office. It's the whole Dunning Kruger thing. She is brilliant, yet knows her limitations and what she is and is not qualified to do.

Oprah is an excellent communicator and has such a pleasant demeanor. I've admired her for years. She had some neo Nazis on her show once, and try as they might, they could not explain why they think white is superior. No PhD's among them, no inventors, no engineers of space vehicles. Nothing. Not even a teacher. They were just 20 something thugs.

If Oprah's celebrity helps get out the vote for Democrats, great. But it cannot be said too early or too often: no more celebrity candidates with no experience running for high elected office. A governor's office, Congress or the WH are not entry-level positions.

What an amazing experience to have Oprah show up at your door. I wasn’t able to tell how much they vetted Ms. Jones, but she came across as sincere, open-minded and ready to rock the vote for Stacey. Sidebar: it was have been even more awesome if Oprah had offered to take her to the polls right then to skip the line and cast her vote!
Doug (Asheville, NC)
@Alish I'm not arguing with you, ok, but why should she get to skip the line? Because Oprah is with her? Wouldn't it be better if Oprah stood there in line with her while she waited to vote like everyone else?

I'm a retired emergency physician who spend many years serving the poor Black population of North Philadelphia. Frequently I would see elderly Black women and have to evaluate their mental status. My universal question was "Tell me who Oprah is?" If the patient could not tell me who Oprah was, I was deepy concerned about dementia or some other mental status change. Most of the patients just laughed at me, "Everybody knows who Oprah is!"

Oprah has made numerous and positive contributions to our culture. And while both Oprah and Trump have a TV background they couldn't be more different. Oprah is smart, successful, principled, accessible, generous, dignified... And she inspires those qualities and behaviors in others. That doesn't mean she is qualified to be president. If we are to learn anything from the ongoing nightmare of Trump it is that effective governing requires experience. I could consider Oprah a serious candidate, assuming she would be effective, if she started in congress. That would demonstrate respect for the requirements of the office.
Maggie (U.S.A.)
Just a PR stunt. Oprah needed to visit homes of white rural and suburban Independents and Republicans, not those who have Democrat lawn signs and are a sure lock for voting Democrat. And in order to gain more Democrat voters, Obama ought be speaking to white rural and suburban millennials at Kennesaw State, Brenau, U. of W. Georgia - not self-satisfied preaching to the Democrat elite black male choir at private downtown Atlanta Morehouse.
Lynn (New York)
@Maggie At this point in a campaign, all efforts are focused on getting supporters to the polls. As the article mentions, lines are long, and voters sometimes walk away, each one thinking that loss of their individual vote doesn't matter, but, of course, they all add up and an election can be lost that way. That is why asking those inclined to support your candidate for a commitment to vote, no matter what, is helpful
R. Anderson (South Carolina)
@Maggie I believe Winfrey and Whoopie Goldberg and LeBron James and Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter are among those who try to help others the best way they can help.

@Maggie What have YOU done to get out the vote, Maggie?
