‘Horseface,’ ‘Lowlife,’ ‘Fat, Ugly’: How the President Demeans Women

Does Donald Trump not have a face mirror and a full-length mirror, in his luxurious bathrooms?? Has he not seen videos of himself? He seems to think of himself as some Adonis !
Joanne M (Chicago Illinois)
Debbie Walsh of Rutgers, "white men over 60" do not, as a group, approve of the vulgar and demeaning comments the President makes about women. Trump, the first "reality show" star, has a base of brainwashed TV viewers who are served a daily menu of fake, scripted, and tasteless programming. Lack of respect and no decorum are the standard on reality shows. Trump is starting in one on a worldwide stage.
Jbugko (Pittsburgh, pa)
I hear nothing but complaints from mothers and my sister (a teacher) about their children's confusion when it comes to the behavior of this "president". Deplorable isn't the word that comes to mind. Insanity is the word that best describes Trump. When is a doctor with some legitimacy going to examine him.
David English (Canada)
The medium is the message. Trump lies, knowing full well you know he's lying. He insults, knowing full well his words do nothing but reflect on his character. Either way, the message is the same. He has the power and there's nothing you can do about it. He's right. The lies and insults are just there to remind you, to rub your face in it. The people that support him love it. They also know there's nothing you can do about it. The GOP, the people that support him, control every part of your government, from the Presidency on down. They control the courts too. You have lost, and they know it. Even if you managed to pull off your Blue Sweep on Nov 6th, which is highly doubtful, it still won't matter. It will take a generation for any course correction to right America. Your infrastructure, from you education system to civil society itself, is badly damaged through neglect. Your neglect. The world won't wait. At the end of WWII, the US took on the leadership role and the free world followed along. This leadership wasn't perfect but, for the most part, it created a lot of good. But, it's done. Manifest Destiny is no more absolute that Rule Britannia. It will likely take another 30 years before America is, like Britain, just another country. Just a matter of time. The other side has lost too. They just don't know it yet. America no longer leads the free world. The sad truth is that Osama bin Laden won.
Sa Ha (Indiana)
We better not give this a pass. We better comment on this behavior loudly and with the seriousness it demands.Every girl and boy child, every girl and boy teenager is watching and listening to us as this evil man gives a nod and a wink, tacit approval, all out ugly assault on decency and dignity of human beings. Taking a stand against this horrible man is absolutely necessary. We do not want our children one day say we did not stand in the gap to protect them from the erosion and normalizing of abuse. Abuse that is at this moment is tricking down to all areas of our society. The blessing flows from the head down and conversely the fish rots from the head down. Vote.
DavidJ (New Jersey)
I wonder how submissive some women are that they are used to this dismissive and vitriolic language from their partners and husbands? They instructed by their husbands to vote a certain way. It’s the only reason I can think of. A life long verbal beating.
Roscoe (Harlem USA)
Trump is like a street kid talking smack. Child bully. The kind that days “Hey four eyes” to a kid with glasses. “Fatso” to a heavy child. “Gimpy” to the handicapped with a limp. And on and on. Everyone who’s been a kid or has a child knows the bully deal. The sad boy or girl who tortures another. He’s all that. Enabled by money and fueled by whatever his diagnosis would be. A hateful man bully child. One of the worst examples. No one debating him could fight back and now they and the GOP all follow his parade bowing to their king. Cruz, Rubio, McConnell, Flake, Conner and the whole bunch. If I were playing his game I’d say “Chump” President Potato head”. Lol what a jerk.
Dejah (Williamsburg, VA)
To be quite honest, the problem is NOT how awful men like Trump behave, though Trump is bad enough and he informs the behavior of the worst of our society. The problem is that we have a legion of men who think they are "nice, professional guys," who never the less send overtly sexual introductory emails, who pinch your behind in the hallway when no one can see them, who think they are above the rules of polite and moral behavior because they cannot or have not "been caught." These are the men who deny or call you crazy, unbalanced, or vindictive when you do come out with any story of their bad behavior, because can't *everyone* see what wonderful "nice" guys they are? Their predatory, entitled behavior is covert and enacted in the shadows. Overt misbehavior, like Trump's is toxic enough. It's the covert, cloaked misbehavior of the *majority* of men, who see themselves as "nice," we truly have to fear. Trump normalizes their darkest impulses and brings their ugliness into the light of day.
Neil (Los Angeles)
That’s our no class President. It’s Kamala Harris time I am feeling. Smart, credible and accomplished. Tough enough to stand up to Trump when he attacks her as a woman, her looks and her parents, Indian mother and Jamaican father. Smart parents scientific research and professor couple. She’s tough enough, more than anyone else in the horizon. Unlike Trump she’s a lawyer, an advocate, a humanist and filled with fact and empathy. A well rounded female human being.
Sa Ha (Indiana)
"And Trump is in the lead...Hes running full tilt, all out, and strong without any signs of letting up...No signs of weakness or weariness. He is amazing as he goes.... towards the cliffs, blind, deaf, and dumb."
kglen (Philadelphia Pa)
I guess that Trump feels he can call women out on their looks because he is so incredibly fit and handsome. And because he himself is never disgusting. And because in his mind, he’s every American woman’s dream. In reality, most women I know quickly turn off radio and tv when he comes on. We just can’t take that level of disgusting.
gary e. davis (Berkeley, CA)
Recall: Such a presidency was incomprehensible several years ago. Now, the media has normalized Trumpism, if only because he thrusts himself into media attention so relentlessly that he creates a sick normality. And journalism can't help being suckered: It's news; it attracts reader "eyeballs,' which makes advertising premium. He’s proven that a propaganda of "drain the swamp" can be bait-and-switch—and nothing can be done about it, because tuning him out gives him even more discretion to institute a narcissistic legacy of ruin.
John (Upstate NY)
Ok. Not news. I told you this long before he even got nominated to run for President. Stop helping him. His supporters eat it up.
kglen (Philadelphia Pa)
You can say that it’s not news because you’re a man. As a woman it is denigrating, insulting and infuriating every single day. Esp as his republican colleagues now tweet things like #beersforbrett and the attendees at his rallies laugh and jeer at victims of abuse. This is the President of the United States who trash talks women in front of the world every day. It is news and it’s very bad news. Please take it seriously.
Able Nommer (Bluefin Texas)
Beloved "Tiny" shows aptitude for invention. He has a knack for names, but only calls for his attentions when they're not around. The people who like him - don't question his manners. They are very supportive and help him feel safe.
everyman (USA)
The presidents comments about women remind me of the behavior of young boys in elementary school. Generally this kind of bullying was a product of their insensitivity, but, also was a part of the developmental phases boys go through, especially when the female students were getting better grades than the boys. Also, it was a struggle congruent for boys who had to feel dominate over females. Most of them would grow out of this phase, and they began to have a different outlook on young (high school) girls, and eventually women. My Trump appears stuck in the earlier phase of development, which includes making fun of women in order to prove how much more competent and intelligent he is. His apparent disgust about women's biological cycles is that of an adolescent mentality at best. Obviously, these personality traits will not change. It appears as a large degree of instability regarding himself.
FilmMD (New York)
You have to have some empathy for Donald "Tiny" Trump. Being so poorly "endowed" in so many ways, he is angry and he is trying to compensate for it all.
Sunny (Winter Springs, FL)
Sarah Huckabee Sanders continues to stand by her President, but I imagine Trump privately has some choice names for her. Should she ever be disloyal I'm sure we will hear them.
Braddock (GB)
What a sad excuse of a man you have as President.
Gino G (Palm Desert, CA)
Trump may demean women, but he demeans white men even more. His use of pejoratives knows no boundaries, by gender or race. He deserves severe criticism for his mannerisms and expressions, which are all too often like childish street taunts , mean and hurtful. No leader should act this way. But, to single out gender is incorrect. He is an equal offender to everyone. If the subject of his insults are tallied by gender, white males would far exceed women, yet no one accuses him of bias against white males. Trying to make a gender issue out of his behavior detracts from the overall condemnation he should receive for his insults. Unfortunately, you might as well try to shovel sand into the incoming tide. It's not going to stop.
Froxgirl (Wilmington MA)
@Gino G Apparently you did not read the article.
CK (Christchurch NZ)
Childish and a race to the bottom. Unless all of his voters are bigoted men with 16th century attitudes towards woman, he has just lost a large chuck of woman voters who won't vote for him. Not a good role model for the younger generation and then people wonder why eating disorders are on the increase!
mr (Newton, ma)
Trump continues his push to drag us into the gutter. We would not let anyone act like this even when we were in grade school. I think his voters enjoy it as they like to see the "elites" have their faces rubbed in the same muck they inhabit.
AVIEL (Jerusalem)
I said it before and I'll say iy again it just proves that in the USA anyone can grow up to become president. Simply amazing.
zigful26 (Los Angeles, CA)
There's no doubt that Trump is beaming while he reads this article. Why? Because it's about him of course. Keep up the good work NYT, along with your empty-headed brethren in the MSM, you keep promoting this idiots one man show. He's a huckster and a carny geek. And he only wants attention.
Mike Edwards (Providence, RI)
Trump punching back “ten times harder”. The behavior attributed to Trump in this article was predicted two and half years ago by his wife. In April 2016, Melania Trump said, "I'm very proud of him. He's a hard worker. He's kind. He has a great heart. He's tough. He's smart. He's a great communicator. He's a great negotiator. He's telling the truth." "He's a great leader. He's fair. As you may know by now, when you attack him, he will punch back 10 times harder". Melania gave him the green light. We can't say we weren't warned.
maria5553 (nyc)
His supporters cheer him on because they are just as bad as he is.
David Anderson (Chicago)
Name calling has become the norm. Trump has been called treasonous, traitorous, totally corrupt, self-serving, ignorant, a clown, racist, a semi-literate moron, feeble-minded, morally bankrupt, nitwit, and I could go on. My guess is that the insults will continue, on both sides of the political divide.
Froxgirl (Wilmington MA)
@David Anderson Your "whataboutism" is showing. Trump is the president. What would you say if Obama acted this way?
DCJ (Brookline)
Donald Trump calls Stormy Daniels “Horseface” in a recent tweet. Donald Trump has demanded that a Black President and a White female Senator prove their place of birth, and their ethnicity as “real” Americans. Yes, this is despicable behavior shown by the President of the United States, but I’m not surprised that these insults and these demands come from a man who refuses to release his income taxes, has told more than 5000 documented lies in his 22 months in Office, has paid women hush money to publicly conceal his extramarital affairs, is currently under investigation for colluding with a foreign governments to win the 2016 election, is expected to have laundered money for Russian gangsters, and has seen his personal attorney, members of his Presidential staff and his Presidential campaign manager plead guilty to committing fraud, financial crimes, conspiracy, identity theft and witness tampering. The more Donald Trump mocks and insults others, the closer I think Federal investigators and the Public are to learning the fraudulent, illegal and treasonous deeds this miserable little man has committed.
SC (Boston)
A couple of things: First of all, let’s stop referring to this type of behavior as “adolescent” and “juvenile”. Most young people have both the morality and common decency to refrain from this type of language. Secondly, I thought we put the “locker-room” excuse to bed. Didn’t many athletes come forward and say that they never use nor hear this language in the locker room? It’s high time we stop using language that subliminally excuses this atrocious behavior. Let’s not forget that one of these many offenses would have derailed virtually any candidacy in the past. And that is before we begin the list of the many more substantive and damaging actions this man has taken against our democracy and the values we have fought for as a nation since our inception. Something else I find strange, Trump chose two obviously beautiful German women (Witt and Klum) to attack; seemingly at no provocation. Is self-hatred at work? I’ve read that Trump used to call himself Scandinavian rather than admit to his German ancestry. There is something we can do about this and the many other affronts we are suffering at the hands of McConnell, Ryan and all the others that use their position in government to line their pockets. Twenty days from now we have the opportunity to put more women in office. Women tend to put the well-being of others and their values ahead of their personal gain. We may just attain a more practical and value-driven government. It’s worth a try.
Ramie (Home)
I would like the bully of the White House to say these things to women’s faces instead of hiding behind the phone. This nasty woman would back up any woman (or man) who confronts him or takes other actions. And the media should not give him more oxygen.
MG (NEPA)
“Horseface”? Really? So said the other end of the horse......
Sergeant Altman (Pittsburgh)
wa we wa! He called.me a name! And.these tender hearts want to be in the infantry???
John Warnock (Thelma KY)
@Sergeant Altman I don't think the vast majority of soldiers would appreciate their sisters, daughters, Mothers and wives being talked about in the manner of the likes of trump. There a few who may mimic Cadet Bone Spurs, but most realize such talk is as demeaning of oneself as it is the person being denigrated.
Sergeant Altman (Pittsburgh)
@John Warnock John, the vast majority of military do not think that their daughters, sisters, etc... should be in the combat arms... But .... wa wa wa...I It appears the American women just want what they want.In their favorite colors. Except what they want changes hourly. By the way... Sticks and stones, etc... And as Truman said about heat and kitchens.
Patrick alexander (Oregon)
@Sergeant Altman...you, sir, are a poser. No self respecting sergeant would ever post the stuff that you have.
Renee (Washington DC)
You seem to "forget" how these women constantly demean him! You also conveniently forget how you constantly demean the president every day through pathetically biased reporting yet you whitewashed every single lie, rape and illegal doings of the Clintons just like you did the Kennedys, the Obamas and anyone who is a democrat. This porn "actress" and her attorney committed extortion which is illegal yet you somehow neglect to mention that too.
Froxgirl (Wilmington MA)
@ReneeTDo tell us what President Obama did that was remotely comparable.
catalina (NYC)
My father always said "people that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones". This jerk throws bricks with his eyes closed. There is nothing Trump can do as president that justifies ignoring his rotten behavior.
Sherry Moser steiker (centennial, colorado)
has he looked at himself in the mirror and isnt this what little boys do?
Derek Martin (Pittsburgh, PA)
We have now reached a point where a porn star can so easily demonstrate more class and dignity than the current president. How sad.
Darrin (Stinson)
People seem to not realize, he works for us. He is a public servant, was hired by us and gets paid by us. How many people could get away with talking to their boss in this manner?
EC (PA)
Of course these comments are appalling but in a way it is refreshing to see things so clearly. At least it is out there for everyone to see and the misogyny is hard to deny. The Republican men in the senate likely feel similarly but they keep their mouths shut or dissemble. Grassley says there has never been a Republican woman on the Judiciary committee because it is a lot of work and then rushes out to apologize and "clarify" his comments. I would put money on the first statement being true but the follow up makes thing ambiguous. It is hard to argue that Trumps attitudes about women are ambiguous (though I am sure the Republican women who support him try...)
ALB (Maryland)
Seriously, female Trump voters. How could you? How can you?
Queens Girl For Life (Midtown)
First generation American, Latina, college educated girl from Queens, NYC, married mother of son and daugther, oh and registered Democrat, 2X Obama voter. “How can you?” Very easily! I don’t vote with my uncontrollable factor of birth. Stormy voluntarily inserted herself into this circus. So are we suggesting that a man go easy on a woman, simply because she’s a woman, that not equality, that’s preferential treatment. I’ll be voting straight red this November 6th, mostly because I care about the presumption of innocence and due process. Guess what, lots of women, especially those that have sons, husbands, fathers, and nephews, etc. will also. If he had not called her a horseface, then the MSM would have downplayed, if reported at all that the defamation suit was thrown out, legal battles are the only ones that matter, not feelings.
KuJoAzn (Nottingham)
@Queens Girl For Life I couldn't agree more with you. The more the smug know it all regressive leftists keep putting people in boxes and expecting them to vote accordingly, the more of a backlash it will create. Feelings mean nothing.
Teddi P (NJ)
The only surprise is that this ignorant, boorish, corrupt moron is still the president.
Peter Silverman (Portland, OR)
He’s just mad because she said his penis was little. Any real man would lash back.
Rebel in Disguise (Toronto Canada)
How's that anti-bullying campaign working out for you FLOTUS? You've got your work cut out for you down the hall in the Oval office. Hopefully you can be successful in shielding your son from Trump's disgusting behavior. And while you're at it, could you please figure out a way to shield the rest of the world's population from his vileness?
Dudesworth (Colorado)
The man is like 300 different types of cancer on our society. It’s time to quit wondering why people support him and figure out a way past them and all of this awfulness. The fate of the world rests on a coalition of Americans that are able to outnumber and out-vote “Trumpism”.
Majortrout (Montreal)
Trump's hands say it all - a man with small body parts, and a small mind. I remember the local bully who would call me names and pick on me. I was afraid of him, and he always beat me up. One day, I fought back, got him into a unreleasable headlock and pummelled him. That's the last time he ever attacked me. Trump is a bully, but I doubt there are any strategies that he would be afraid of, since as he once said "I'm president and you're not"* *https://www.cnn.com/2017/03/23/politics/trump-time-interview-wiretaps-fa... Vote November 6 and show the small-minded bully that he can't hide behind the presidency!
T Hankins (Austin Tx)
Of all the rude things this man has said this one stands out in my mind . A bully youngster might say that to another youngster , but our President ? This one was really telling of him.
winthrop staples (newbury park california)
The NY Times needs to stop being biased and selectively hypocritical about ANYONE insulting anyone else! The political Left the democratic party and media have for decades terrorized anyone who dared to disagree with them about an increasing number of policy issues as racists, xenophobes, anti Semites, Nazis, misogamists, bigots, disturbing, intolerant, threatening ... so it literally is hilarious that the NY Times would think the readers so ignorant as to be shocked about school-yard like insults about women's or any one else's appearance or body functions (particularly when they think all manner of similar insults about males are not only 1st amendment OK but some kind of war-time like obligation). All of us ignorant dispicables are exposed to a continuing 24/7 brainwashing barrage by the media about hour ugly or fat or uncool we are and how we need this or that product to be acceptable to the rest of humanity. And this insult, humiliate most of us that the consumer goods industry constantly does is what actually pays the salaries of the NY Times editors so they should really shut up about someone who dares to fight back and insult them back as they daily accuse everyone else who does not live in NY and is not Jewish (or some increasingly fake minority) of being a Nazi.
Dennis D. McDonald (Alexandria, Virginia)
@winthrop staples Trump is the President of the USA. His behavior is despicable, childish, and embarrassing.
John Warnock (Thelma KY)
@winthrop staples I doubt that many NYT readers are shocked. Most our probably dismayed and disgusted with the total lack of civil discourse from this President. Most Americans, and the rest of the world too, expect the President of the USA to be a role model and to set an example to be emulated by our young people. Being a low level guttersnipe is not what we should see being played out in the Oval Office. trumpie's persona and demeanor are not the result of media scrutiny or political opposition. It is the real trump being trump; and despicable at that.
Dagwood (San Diego)
I guess Trump’s supporters, even the women, have been so maimed, hurt, devastated by some version of “political correctness” that they will support anything, anything at all, that gives that idea the middle finger. Put little kids in cages? Support dictators? Assault women? Reduce Presidential speech to that of the little boys’ room? Pollute our air and water? Sponge off the taxpayer? Lie daily, about everything? None of this compares to the entertaining pleasure of watching “their guy” tell everyone to shove it. I can’t figure out how these folks came to feel so injured that it would be worth so much to them for this kind of schoolyard fun...but it is.
PeteH (MelbourneAU)
But it don't think they're "injured", they're just boorish, horrible creeps, the same as the president.
Tim B (Seattle)
I ran some errands this morning, going to the pharmacy, a bank and then a grocery store. I was struck by how to a person, each person was personable, polite and helpful. It happened on this day that each person that I dealt with was a woman, and smiles were gratefully given and returned. I was reminded on this most beautiful of fall days how abnormal it is to have a 'president' like Trump, who is unfailingly crude, vulgar, insulting and demeaning. And how the great majority of people I have encountered in my life, women and men, are nice, helpful and decent people. Trump should not be anyone's model for anything, whether in his personal relationships to others or his ideas on business or world affairs. He is toxic and thankfully his reign of error will not last forever.
bev musser (cleveland, oh)
Keep this information in the papers and in the news. It's not anything new, however, we need to continue to be reminded of the kind of person the potus is. I'm not even going to dignify the title with CAPS! The mid terms are coming!!!! This is not someone I want representing me. He doesn't represent me or anyone I know. We need to come back to being human and kind and tolerant. That won't happen as long as Trump is allowed to remain in office and speak about women and all people who dare to challenge him. The more I'm reminded of his inhuman behavior, the more I'm determined to make sure the GOP does not remain in power now. And hopefully in 2020. We have the power to change things. Vote!
AndyW (Chicago)
Some voters think that it’s ok to have elected a literal man-child to the presidency of the United States. This fact says just as much about them as it does about him.
Barry (Nashville, TN)
It never fails to apply: Whatever he says about other people is what he really thinks of himself.
Mary Holland (Florida)
I’d love to see a list of every rude and derogatory thing he’s said about women, in chronological order. And then I’d love to see it all over social media.
Marlene Barbera (Portland, OR)
Make one!
AX (Toronto)
Oh, yeah? Millions of Trump's neighbours to the north, both men and women, have many more demeaning words coined and reserved for him.
PeteH (MelbourneAU)
And not just in Canada, but around the entire world.
Derek Martin (Pittsburgh, PA)
Sems to me that Trump was just fine with Ms. Clifford's face about $130,000 ago. And no one with that hair (which looks that way by choice) should EVER comment on another person's looks.
Mahalo (Hawaii)
I don't justify a tit for tat policy but women need to start calling Trump out for what he is, forget political correctness (e.g, act like a lady, etc) channel Alice Roosevelt who would have cut him down to size. Trump is objectively fat, out of shape, unattractive man who talks too much. When he calls a woman "horserace" instead of being offended, fire back "look who's talking, lardbutt." Or "calling the kettle black are we?" He might actually be amazed at the riposte. Going high is fine when we are dealing with "high" when we are dealing with low, don't get mad and offended and disgusted, volley back with facts: fat, out of shape, paunchy, etc there's plenty of stuff to work with.
Tony (Portland, Maine)
Mr. President...Go to the midwest farm country to a fall festival and start trashing all the women there and see how it goes....
amy (ct)
Aside from all his nasty comments, I wonder if Trump has looked in the mirror, because he is disgusting, inside and out. The fact that some women continue to support and vote for Jabba the Trump shows how little I understand many women...and I am one.
Marty (NH)
@amy Female misogynists: Women who support misogynist men by being complicit in attacking or degrading other women.
Raven (Alaska )
What is absolutely astounding, is the continued support of this man. The enabling of the Republicans is repulsive.
Ellen (Tampa)
Meanwhile, women across America are quietly booking their plastic and cosmetic appointments. We're more than our looks, but men need to like what they see before they investigate further.
escorpio (new jersey)
We have known for quite some time now that Trump has no moral compass, and because of that, if for no other reason he is completely unfit to occupy the oval office. What is so difficult to understand is the 53% of white women and 40% of women overall who voted for him after he had demonstrated his demeaning, sexist misogynist attitudes and behaviors over the course of his campaign, and more generally over the course of his life. And sad to say, if he were running for re-election today he would still garner a large percentage of the female vote.
[email protected] (Joshua Tree)
today, the Times really painted President Trump as an ogre. on behalf of all ogres, I have to say this is very unfair.
Iain (California)
These women are way classier than Trump. Because they don't name-call like a child on the playground.
Southern Boy (CSA)
Interesting how the New York Times is defending Stormy Daniels against President Trump’s remarks. Ms. Daniels is a woman to be pitied not because President Trump called her a “horseface,” but because of the profession which she has chosen for herself. In America, The Farewell Tour, Chris Hedges devotes an entire chapter on how pornography and prostitution and adult entertainment are evidence of a crumbling society. Stormy Daniels, a participant in that moral decline, is celebrated by the New York Times for her opposition to President Trump. Their affair, if it happened, was an issue between them, ut instead she chose to exploit it, to profit from it, and smear the President of the United States. She deserves whatever name he chooses to call her, and “horseface” is one of the more polite ones he could use. Thank you.
Patriot (USA)
@Southern Boy You may only judge if YOU have never been a participant in this “moral decline.” Pornography? Strip clubs? Yeah, that’s what I thought. And I couldn’t help but notice that you don’t have one iota of disdain for Trump’s considerable participation in moral turpitude. Oh, the hypocrisy.
William (Fairfax, VA)
@Southern Boy Secede already, and take your misplaced sense of moral opprobrium (superiority?) w/ you, the collective "you."
GG (New York)
Trump is a narcissist who apparently never looked in a mirror. If he did, he'd see a man who is no Apollo Belvedere. He's not even Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic or Colin Kaepernick or any other hot guy. He denigrates women, because our society is inured in the hatred of women -- which stems from the fear of women and female power that goes back to the womb. Also, women are emblematic of the stages of life and men fear getting old. "They fear death," as Danny Aiello's character explains to Olympia Dukakis' in "Moonstruck." As for the old saw that Trump is the antidote to political correctness, I would posit that political correctness has its valiant side. It's known as common courtesy. -- thegamesmenplay.com
Raghavan Parthasarthy (New Jersey)
Trump’s vulgar treatment of women is a strong testament to the argument that America is still a crude society with a “gun, beer, and machoism” mentality. At present, this mentality seems to be predominant in the GOP, as evidenced by its policies and actions, and that is antithetical to social progress. The civilization-level of a society is judged by how men treat women in that society. The GOP should change course toward moderation – as a start, it could diversify by fielding more women candidates for election.
Nuffalready (upstate NY)
I wonder what private conversations consist are like between Melania and Barron. Does she plan with him their escape one day? Or does she tell him it's all fake news? And then what happens when Barron goes to school and hears it all from his friends? How on earth does this mother legitimize this monster of a man and father?
Andrew (Idaho)
@Nuffalready "Monster of a man"? Wow, go to the extreme, eh? As an independent voter, I find it hilarious how the radical anti-Trump camp is doing exactly what they ridiculed the anti-Obama people of a few years back. Or does your memory not go back that far?
Joe (Paradisio)
Just about every one of the women that this article states the President has called names, have pretty much all called him names. Can we expect the NYTimes to have a follow up article on why it is horrible for women to call the President names?
Andrew (Idaho)
@Joe I made a similar comment. The hypocrisy is astounding. And they act like this is the first time we've EVER had a crass president. These people obviously know nothing about JFK, Johnson, or Nixon...smh
LovingFall (USA)
@Joe If any of them is president someday, I’ll be the first one to call them out should they do it.
StanC (Texas)
Good grief. Let's sum up: There's something wrong with Trump, and there's something wrong with his willing apologists. Defining the precise malady is best left to experts, but it seems to have to do with his obsession of appearing "strong". As suggested by his continuing comments, weakness seemingly is represented by the female and, interestingly noted by some, babies.
frank monaco (Brooklyn NY)
How is this kind of behavior ok for the President of The U.S.?Making fun of a disabled person, mimicking Dr. Ford and now refering to a citizen as "Horseface" reguardless of what her case is against him. Or is just ok if your Party is in the Whitehouse? Does this Man have No decency and Respect for the Office he Presides in? What President in the last 70 years has acting this way? So you have a Supreme Court justice of your liking so that makes all this something you can overlook? This man doesn't deserve to sit in the office that was once occupied by Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and so man others.
T Hankins (Austin Tx)
Why would a Man that is way less than ideal in looks be so critical ?
Don M (Toronto)
@T Hankins Exactly, Donald could use a few face lifts and a girdle.
Prometheus (Caucasus Mountains)
Trump proves Freud right. How else to explain why 53% of white women, especially married, voted for him but a daddy complex. Yes, yes, I know the patriarchal society argument but this too backs up Freud. Married women are looking for a substitute Daddy and married men a mother.
Gloria (Altadena, CA)
Readers are too nice talking about Trump. It seems like other people could joke about his looks. The hair? The wrinkles? Being overweight? Questioning his posture? Should one mention wondering about his mental facilities? The Trump "image" needs to be described more realistically.
Dixon Duval (USA)
Trump is a real set-back for masculinity in many ways. Not that I would attempt to describe or provide examples; but he doesn't understand how to proceed gracefully under pressure. This one example of his lack of finesse usher's in all manner of the old macho aspect of maleness.
gillian-b40 (NY)
The president may have an uncontrollable urge to say things that denigrate women. But a respected journal like the New York Times has no obligation to repeat his slanders without a second thought. We should return to the days when the president was reported on when he actually did something newsworthy. It's time to stop giving world-wide coverage to his midnight musings and pre-dawn postulations online or when stopped for an impromptu comment. His very presidency is based on this verbatim recording of his every utterance ... true or not (and the current tally of false information has surpassed 5000!). He was given free time and ink at a time when his opponents had to pay dearly for advertisements. Les Moonves, formerly of CBS, is quoted as saying, "He may not be good for the country, but he's good for CBS." Moonves is gone now. So should this approach to news be gone from the public arena.
Claudia (New Hampshire)
And this is news? After 2 years you still feel it necessary to explain to those of us who may not have noticed that this man clearly sees women as the average 12 year old boy of his generation saw women? So why this article? A more interesting piece might be: Why does this not matter to the Bible belt fans of Mr. Trump? Could it be they are more sophisticated, or cynical than you think? Could it be that putting that final justice on the Supreme Court was more important to them than whether that justice is a paragon of virtue? And why would that be? Do you know how to spell "abortion?"
SPH (Oregon)
Let’s just imagine for the moment the howls of protest from the right and Fox if Obama said anything remotely close to what Trump has said about women.
[email protected] (Joshua Tree)
as I recall, there were howls of protest from Fox and those on the right if President Obama even said good morning... not to mention the scorn heaped on Hillary Clinton if she as much as took a deep breath. it always behooves Republicans to fall back on ad hominem criticism rather than revealing their unpalatable policies.
Sharon (Miami Beach)
Meh, much ado about nothing. As someone that was bullied and tormented for my appearance and clothing as a kid, I learned that if you let it bother you, the bully wins. Just ignore.
Topaz Blue (Chicago)
@Sharon It’s not the same thing. The president is supposed to be a role model. His misogynistic behavior is not something I want young people (nor any people, really) to emulate.
Don M (Toronto)
@Sharon No one should be bullied under any circumstances. But Trump is the President of your country for heaven sake. He doesn't in any capacity act like the leader of your country. You just can not ignore what he is doing. Unless you're a Republican.
eheck (Ohio)
@Sharon I don't think Ms. Clifford cares one iota about what Trump says. The "ado" is that the President of the United States behaves like a 12-year old. It's appalling.
Liz Siler (Pacific Northwest)
Are we surprised? This guy has mocked disabled people. And still people voted for him. The bottom line is that he reflects something malevolent in this society. And that malevolent something keeps him in power.
Don M (Toronto)
@Liz Siler It's a very scary situation. If the voters don't vote the Democrats into Congress the United States is going to be in a very bad way. Trump has no regard for anything. He lies and then denies doing it even when its on video. Who, in their right mind, would do that? America, get rid of this menace.
Liz Siler (Pacific Northwest)
@Don I certainly agree with you Mr. Don M. I'm just saying that we shouldn't be shocked to learn that he says terrible things about women. He uses his power to say/do terrible things to other groups (e.g. disabled). I am voting Democrat and encouraging others to do likewise, but am also brushing up my French and Spanish to be sure that I can get out of here if things don't work out well in November.
T Hankins (Austin Tx)
Why would anyone continue to promote a man that insults others like Trump ? And why do they think that he would be kind to them? And most importantly think of what he is teaching our Children by this terrible example .
Passion for Peaches (Blue State)
Funny (badly paraphrased) joke I heard on CBC Radio, in a show called The Debators: Experts predict a warmer than usual winter in Canada this year, due to the burning rage of hundreds of millions of American women.
EEE (noreaster)
He doesn't demean women.... He demeans himself, and every low-life who continues to support him.
jefflz (San Francisco)
In the face all of these insults to our nation by the vulgar clown Donald Trump, we must keep in mind that he is a major distraction from the true Republican agenda: slash taxes for the super-rich, generate huge deficits and then destroy Medicare and Social Security. Stay focused and vote these Republican anti-Americans out of office in November. It is the duty of everyone who cares about decency and democracy.
Patrick alexander (Oregon)
To the base: No matter what your politics, your gender, your race, your religious beliefs, your education....there is simply no reasonable justification for your continued support of this “thing” in the WH. If you don’t agree, then, you are fully complicit with him.
Paul P (Greensboro,nc)
Let’s not forget, little Donnie is the one who chased after her, not the other way around. The only thing about her that I find displeasing, is the fact she slept with a pig like Donald.
jefflz (San Francisco)
The lying ignorant, incompetent, amoral sexual predator Donald Trump is the face of today's Republican Party. American voters including Millennials must rise up and take back our government by voting out the anti-democratic and shameless Republican Congress. The 2018 elections are the most critical in modern US history. Get out the vote!!
Brasto (Minneapolis)
why do you think this is an anti-woman thing. Trumps goes hard on anyone that goes after him and in this case the lefts porn star had it coming most people can't understand this because they're not Trump but it sure is interesting that every time he says something outrageous, people act like it's the first time he's said something provocative it's really democrats unforced errors that will help republicans in the mid-terms and 2020
AJB (San Francisco)
What a dismal role model for American youth! A racist, sexist, ignorant liar. Thanks again to the GOP, taking the world’s greatest nation to a dismal new low!
Lorem Ipsum (DFW, TX)
And you're helping. Tell me what's so G about this OP of yours. And if you can't, just call them by their name, which is "Republicans."
me (here)
for the men that support trump try this. call your wife, girlfriend, or significant other horseface today and get back to us and let us know how that went over. and for you women who support him, call your man fat, disgusting, ora pig and let us know how that went over.
William O. Beeman (Minneapolis, Minnesota)
The barflies that vote for Trump are cheering everytime he insults women. Just last week I heard a guy shout "That'll teach those uppity broads" when Trump launched one of these insults. Of course, he insults everyone, but there is a particular misogynist streak to his insults against women. "Horseface" is just the most recent. He can't abide strong women, and when they oppose him, he can't contain himself. He just has to denigrate them. The sad part is that this increases his popularity with the MAGA-heads and the Crypto-MAGA-heads (who don't dare express their support at the Country Club). The great puzzle is why "Women for Trump" even exists as an organization. Are these women really blind and deaf to what Trump represents? Do they really want a world where their mothers, sisters, and daughters are going to be exposed to this garbage rhetoric with the blessing of those who control our government? Please America, and especially women, wake up. This president is NOT your friend, and he is enabling everyone who would denigrate and insult women.
Lane (Riverbank Ca)
Trumps name calling does have a touch of humor though sophomoric. There is no humor in the name calling from the other side. horseface, pocahontas, Lying Ted, Little Marco vs nazi, racist, serial rapist, facist, white supremacists stuff?
DeeCee (Bloomington, Indiana)
How can any woman ever have voted for this disgusting troll? How can any woman vote for any of his cronies and enablers next month? How have we as a nation allowed ourselves be swept up in his misogyny?
Andrew (Idaho)
@DeeCee See you in 2020 DeeCee!! #trumptrain
Steve Kennedy (Deer Park, Texas)
With all the gloating about Sen. Warren, Ms. Daniels, etc., the overlooked issue as this article points out is Mr. Trump's adolescent name calling. Add that to the thousands of lies and the many personality disorders (narcissism, misogyny, god complex, etc.) and he truly is a "sad, embarrassing wreck of a man." (George Will)
Iconoclast1956 (Columbus, OH)
I'm really glad The Times ran this article because I think it's important. But Donald Trump's propensity for saying insulting things about women extends beyond women to most people. The puzzle is why this is either appealing to his base or doesn't make them turn away from him. My guess is that a great many people have self-esteem problems; would like to sound off on how they really feel to others near and far like Trump; and are living vicariously to some extent when they hear Trump sound off with insults.
Margo (Atlanta)
It does make me wonder about what earlier presidents might have tweeted... Obama, having the legal background had no backlash for imprudent tweets, but there are other president who might have rivalled the current president in this area if they only had the chance. We have to learn to manage the ability to share every little thought and there probably needs a Secretary of Social Media added to the Presidents cabinet to take over and manage this appropriately.
Lona (Iowa)
Women who voted for Trump have shown that they don't think that other women are worthy of respect. There were a number of other potential Republican nominees.
NYC Dweller (NYC)
And the public has demeaned Trump, but that is ok. Double standards
Lorem Ipsum (DFW, TX)
And since you identify with him so closely, they've demeaned you. Yes, you. Bad public! Bad, bad public!
William (Fairfax, VA)
@NYC Dweller Something about a President being held to a higher standard... .
Lex (DC)
Trump's comments say more about the people who voted for him (and I mean everyone who for him, not just his base) than they do about him.
Kevin O'Reilly (MI)
Does anyone care to guess what percentage of Trump's female base is offended by any of this? My guess is that it would be somewhere between 0.001 and 1% .
David (Binghamton, NY)
"Ms. Walsh said that 'you cannot continue to be a party in power if the voters that you are appealing to are white men over the age of 60.'” Wrong, Ms. Walsh. You absolutely can, and here's how to do it. First, gerrymander congressional districts so that Republicans win a majority of house seats despite being supported by a minority of voters. Second, enact numerous voter-suppression laws and close polling stations so that hundreds of thousands of eligible voters who are likely to vote Democrat are unable to vote. Third, appoint right-wing ideologues to the courts (and especially the Supreme Court) who will uphold said voter-suppression laws. Fourth, lie and tell the public that your party really supports Medicare while it is planning to destroy it and that tax-cuts that benefit the wealthiest individuals and corporations are really intended to benefit the middle class. And fifth, paint women sexual assault survivors as liars and as a screaming "mob." Works every time.
Jack (Nashville)
The silver lining to the hideous rise of DJT is that enough people may be motivated to come off the sidelines, and or show up on game day, to try and take our country and our civil discourse back. Will they outnumber the people for whom DJT has been heaven-sent? I have no idea. But after the past two years, no one can kid themselves anymore that, "Well, maybe he's / it's not really as bad as all that." He is, and it is. Now, what are you going to do about it, Decent America?
Bob C (Virginia)
Commentators on MSNBC noted that Trump's nick names for men, by contrast, do not ridicule their looks or bodies. He used such terms as Lil' Marco, Low Energy Jeb, Lyin' Ted, Crazy Joe. He reserves his special venom for women who challenge him. Such an insecure little man.
Maria Ashot (EU)
The Republican Party is waging an all-out War on Women. If you did not believe it before, believe it now. We have a right to defend ourselves. We have a right to defend the children we bring into this world with so much effort & at such expense, from GOP attacks on our daughters & from GOP attempts to brainwash & corrupt our sons.
Lorem Ipsum (DFW, TX)
Ahem, if you're calling them a "Grand Old Party" over and over, are you the right person to complain about brainwashing?
Chris (Cave Junction)
Trump doesn't just pit different ethnicities against each other, or people with different political views, he pits men and women against each other. Trump will be remembered for increasing the division among the citizenry, the exact opposite of what he is supposed to do as president. But we only have ourselves to blame because we lack the agency to think for ourselves and are led by the nose by this charlatan. We even elected him despite all the obvious signs that he was a boorish divider seeking narcissistic ingratiation. (Spare me NYT readers your claims you didn't vote for him or that he lost the popular vote and take responsibility for being part of the gestalt that is America today. We did this, and it has been year's in the making. )
Mareln (MA)
I hold all Republican politicians responsible for this debacle of a presidency and will vote against any name, for any political office, followed by "R."
c smith (Pittsburgh)
I thought today's women had moved beyond being worried about their looks (and, presumably, criticism of same). Which is it? Men either ignore or laugh off this sort of juvenile stuff. "Equality" isn't all its cracked up to be, eh ladies?
thetruthisoutthere (earth)
Equality would be if men received the same amount of criticism for their appearance as women do. It's not even close. And when has the current president criticized a man for his appearance? I still look forward to equality, which we are a long way from.
Tim (The Upper Peninsula)
@c smith "Men either ignore or laugh off this sort of juvenile stuff." Do they? Speak for yourself.
c smith (Pittsburgh)
@thetruthisoutthere My experience is that it is women who are often the worst critics of other women's looks.
LMS (Waxhaw, NC)
The contents of this article supports why you should stop telling your daughters that they are pretty to the point of having no other value. When girls and women no longer see their value and self worth attached to their looks then these sophomoric insult will cease to have any power. This is just another ploy of the Patriarchy to keep/put women in their place. Horrifying as usual, from the ignorant, small-minded, and fearful man elected president in 2016. Vote on 11/6 to put this unedited ingroramus in check.
karisimo0 (Kearny, NJ)
Trump, more than anything else, is a reflection of his supporters. IMO, being a supporter of Trump is an admission that his prejudice, chauvinism, callousness, corruption, perversion (grabbing women's genitals without their consent is not only illegal, it's perverted and amazingly juvenile), and idiocy are okay--even for a President of the US. It's long past time that the excuse some Trump supporters use--that he is doing what they want, so they forgive his transgressions--can hold any real weight. If a Trump supporter didn't like Trump's childish and immoral behavior, a vote for any of the conservatives running in the 2016 Republican primaries was certainly an option. No, Trump is reflective of the prejudice, chauvinism, callousness, perversion, and idiocy of his supporters. Many of them don't just support him, they LIKE him, they really do. I've heard from many of them that they like that Trump says what he means, and skips the PC garbage. We'll do better as an opposition group if we get that through our heads, because while Trump is a big problem, his supporters are what's truly killing us.
stewarjt (all up in there some where)
That a "man" who looks like Mr. Trump makes fun of someone's appearance just boggles the mind.
iRail (Washington DC)
Stormy’s case against Trump was dismissed, the judge ruling Stormy must pay Trump’s legal bill, +$100k! For every dollar stuffed into stripper Stormy’s g-string Trump now takes $0.75 as if Trump were Stormy’s pimp! Trump probably takes a cut from Stomy’s personal appearances, ‘art films’ and ‘private parties’ too.
noname (earth)
Ad hominem attack, so presidential !!
RLW (Chicago)
If you don't like to hear Trump demean just about anybody who is not Donald J. Trump himself, then vote to kick his supporters and, later the moron himself, out of public office.
Southern Boy (CSA)
Lighten up.
Doremus Jessup (On the move)
@Southern Boy Lighten up? Why? Can we assume that you like having an ignorant pig for president?
Lex (DC)
@Southern Boy, So you think demeaning comments about women are acceptable. Would you call the women you know "ugly", "fat", and "horseface"?
Southern Boy (CSA)
@Lex, I have and I will, and besides, I imagine most of the men commenting on this article have too, but in the spirit of political correctness, would not admit to it. Thanks.
Raul Hernandez (Santa Barbara, California)
"There is no place for that" said Paul Ryan about the Horse Face comment. The WWF of Politics, aka The Republican Party, is now crying foul after their leader's foul and vulgar mouth called a porn star "horseface." After a pair of Gold Star parents, POWs, women, a disabled man and countless others, the Party of Crackpots decides it now has ethical boundaries and "rules." Really? What a joke.
Al (California)
Calling women dogs, pigs and horses is what many real American men always do, right? Isn’t Trump just reflecting the plain-speak of many American males and dropping the pretense of culture and dignity that might associate him with liberals, Democrats and snotty college grads?
Life is good (earth)
I am sorry but your reasoning is poor. just because everybody else is robbing banks, smoking crack or beating children with baseball bats does not make it right for you to do so. bandwagon falacy!!! falacy ad-popum!!
Ned Netterville (Lone Oak, TN)
"Clifford’s lawyer responded by calling the president “a disgusting misogynist.” Mike Avenatti is right in his description of Trump. But Mike is himself a thoroughly dishonest slanderer who scurrilously lied about Brett Kavanaugh, a point the NYT failed to mention. "Ms. Walsh said that “you cannot continue to be a party in power if the voters that you are appealing to are white men over the age of 60.” Ms. Walsh is a white-man hater whose remark demeans all men over 60, many who, like me, are disgusted by Trump's viciousness and misogyny. She is obviously a Democrat flak. Both Democrats and Republicans in this election cycle have demonstrated the futility of vesting such power in the hands of a political class. It is past time for Americans to think about voluntary self-government as a replacement for a system entirely dependent on violence for its collection of taxes and enforcement of the rule of law..
Alexis (Portland, OR)
Typical that a man who fake-bakes, has obvious dentures, and sports the most recognizably awful haircut in history lashes out at anyone who isn't perfect like him.
JMT (Minneapolis MN)
Tabloid news in the newspaper whose motto is "All the News that's Fit to Print." The "potty mouth" President doesn't deserve the daily columns on the front page of the NY Times. Plenty of news either never makes it or has a short attention span. Recovery in Florida, Georgia, Virginia and where to send donations to help. Atrocities in Yemen, Myramar, Brexit effects on formerly "Great" Britain, Climate Change reports, EPA destruction and denial of science, whose money is funding the attack ads against Democrats, voter suppression in Georgia, Kansas, North Carolina, and elsewhere.
Plennie Wingo (Weinfelden, Switzerland)
See what a lifetime of misogyny, tax-evasion, lying, con artistry, etc. etc.. can get you? The highest office in the land. Hail to the Chief.
A. Jubatus (New York City)
trump has serious, serious mommy issues. Ladies and gentlemen, the president of the United States.
Lisa (Canada)
We would not even know who Stormy Daniels (Stephanie Clifford) or Karen McDougal or Michael Cohen were, if Trump had not consorted with them for years. A deluge of women made their accusations public following the October 2016 release of the "Access Hollywood" tape, in which Trump was recorded boasting about grabbing women's genitals in 2005. When he disparages these people, he is disparaging his own judgement. See the words come out of his mouth unedited in less than 4 minutes! ...then learn the definition of the word HYPOCRITE and why his supporters should consider themselves fools https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSE-XoVKaXg

I really cannot wait until this reprehensible creature leaves office.
KJS (Florida)
In addition tho Trump’s disgusting characterizations of women is the nauseating fact that Melania, Ivanka, Kellyanne and Sarah Huckabee Sanders support and defend him. They know no shame and are as repulsive as he is.
MJB (Tucson)
I don't like how he trashes other people, it is awful to listen to and bad for a society. For those happy that he trashes political correctness, this is not about political correctness. It's about basic decency in a society. Mature people don't trash other people. It is a vexation to the spirit.
Horseshoe Crab (South Orleans, MA )
They obviously have firmly rooted beliefs, these women who vote for Trump, and I doubt his disgusting, misogynistic attitudes and behavior will sway them in the least. Sad. I wonder what wonderful epithet he will use to describe the FLOTUS when she takes the Golden Parachute and runs... hopefully sooner than later if she hopes to salvage any self-respect. I still hear her words as she portrayed her husband after he secured the Republican nomination... "Donald loves people." I guess she wasn't referring to women.
boroka (Beloit WI)
If we were to call one woman beautiful smart and courageous, it obviously would not mean that we have the same opinion of ALL women. That would be silly. The reverse is also true: Calling any one person anything, although "not nice," applies only to that person and that person alone. But, o course, the writers of this article know this full well.
Alexis Hamilton (Portland, Oregon)
Not the point and you know it. Attack ideas or political positions—not a completely subjective and narrow opinion of somebody’s physical attributes.
boroka (Beloit WI)
@Alexis Hamilton Straying way off topic, you have just posted a completely subjective and narrow twisting of somebody's well-considered and civil opinion.
Richard Deforest (Mora, Minnesota)
The American Public does not seem to understand a basic presence in this “President’s” Personality. He is classic Sociopathic Personality Disorder, which undergirds his Chronic character. Part of that presence is his total inability to ever admit to any mistakes or wrongdoing. Meanwhile, part of that Sociopathy is his chronic enjoyment in being the absolute Center Of Attention. (Our CEO is our COA!) God bless America....someday...post Trump.
David Koppett (San Jose, CA)
The NYT recently ran an article about women who support Trump, and how others are puzzled by it given his behavior. Count me among those still puzzled. Why would any group of people vote for someone who can’t show them even basic human decency and respect? It is disturbing and sad that one of our two major political parties continues to condone and enable the offensive behavior of this poor excuse for a President.
JTS (Westchester)
It has to be said: Trump’s face and body are even more hideous-looking than the women (and men) he derides. Yet, no public comments. Is it because others are just too diplomatic - going high when he goes low? Or, is Trump just so commanding and “Teflon” that folks just don’t retaliate? I don’t know the answer, but he never fails to prove how unfit he is, on every level, for the office to which the Electoral College installed him.
mariamsaunders (Toronto, Canada)
"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Perhaps trump should take a good look in the mirror and see what's inside and outside.
SDM (Santa Fe New Mexico)
This isn’t really about Trump - he’s a reflection of a broader problem in the GOP. They nominated and elected a man to the highest office who on tape bragged about molesting women and has multiple credible accusers of just that. Now they’ve nominated and confirmed to the Supreme Court another man with temperament issues that alone should have disqualified him plus credible testimony from one woman and accusations from two others of sexual misconduct. Add these to GOP-backed proposals for institutionalized government-sanctioned invasions of women’s privacy (mandated transvaginal ultrasounds anyone?) plus policies that disproportionately impoverish women. Some Democrats have not always behaved well towards women but the GOP now must live with the consequences of being a Party that has defiantly and stubbornly promoted anyone to national office and lifetime appointment who is rich enough, white enough, and male, no matter how crude, abusive, and unfit. It’s clear who they are the Party of and for. If voters still don’t get it, it’s a mystery of human psychology.
DaDa (Chicago)
Step back a moment and consider that this guy is the president: one who doesn't have time to educate himself on climate, change, trade policies, or really anything, but like some kind of grade-school brat takes the time to call people names. Wow. (and this doesn't even count the fact the paid this latest one for sex-- such a class act.)
Harvey (NC)
“We need a strong dose of message discipline out of the White House for the next 20 days,” Mr. Reed said. “If not, this midterm election becomes a crapshoot.” Right: just for 20 days Mr. Trump and then you can return to your misogynistic name calling. Scott Reed a veteran Republican strategist doesn't get it any more than Trump. The R's continue to lie prostrate before their "supreme" leader.
Yolanda Perez (Boston MA)
His name calling is a reflection of his immature nature. What is worse how he panders to other men, can't stand up to them. The world sees his MO, so obvious and it puts this nation at risk. America looks weak because of the White House and GOP. Luckily, I remember when we had a President who honored his wife and daughters - gives me hope there are good decent American men.
Andrew (Idaho)
And how many of you make fun of Trump's body image, hair, and skin color on a regular basis? I see a lot of people here who have no right to call out President Trump. There is so much hate in this country...so sad.
RLC (US)
For me, Trump is the true face of the entirety of the GOP when he goes off on his crude verbal assassinations of anyone who has dared to cross him, former associates or foes, it doesn't matter. This is how the GOP operates now, using mafioso style tactics to not only denigrate and humiliate their perceived detractors, but more importantly, to silence them. This, from a man who by the way, also doesn't pay his fair share of federal or state taxes, but makes damn sure the rest of us do. What I don't understand is why the democrats don't start playing the same kind of hardball that these GOP'ers get away with. They have to start calling the tax evading and the misogynist cat calling out publicly and making it hurt. Instead, they sit on their hands. This man and his McConnell luddites need to go. The sooner, the better.
Mary K O'Brien (Cambridge MA)
His comments are those of a pimp. His praise for women is reserved for those in his "pageants" ;he refers to them as "my girls". His most noxious comments are especially aimed at successful professional women, those he evidently fears the most!
Just Wondering ( ME)
If you cross him he suddenly thinks you look the way he looks to others - looks and acts. Besides the trade-names for this gambit - 'projection', 'shadow', 'denial', etc. - there's always the option of using the good old epithet 'dumb cluck'. Maybe we should sentence him to 24 hours in a brilliantly lit cell made of mirrors. Just wondering.
manfred marcus (Bolivia)
Trump is a shameless and most vulgar demagogue, always like a rabid dog, on the attack. His lies and insults, having become the norm, are highly toxic and dangerous, as their constant repetition may make them 'true' to his thoughtless base, prejudiced as they are in believing that a cult of personality is what counts, not the facts based on evidence. Shall we define 'misogyny', just in case some may have, conveniently, forgotten it's meaning, sexual objectivization and violence against women? THis is not just a women's issue, it is a human insult to our 'better halve's, as women have demonstrated, over and over, to be better that we men; women are more grounded, down to Earth, and always intent in preserving what's good for humanity. In fact, as we men had so many chances to make things work, we have failed miserably by concocting wars and other crimes...in the name of justice. It's time for women to take the lead, and restore civility, and peace, in society. Ant Trump is the epitomy, embodiment, of garbage (the stinking variety), that ought to be confined to the toilet. Folks, let Trump's awful behavior not become normalized, as it make us complicit...and 'own him' (Ughh!).
Mark (Atlanta)
When Trump said his mocking Christine Blasey Ford "didn't matter", I heard "women don't matter". When Trump promised to appoint a US Supreme Court judge who would send Roe v. Wade back to the states and then punish women for having abortions I heard "grab 'em by the womb". His juvenile name calling is one thing, but behind this are self-evident truths that should matter to all voters.
CP (NJ)
Really? This is not news, but it is definitely a reminder to all Americans about what a pig this so-called president is. And yes, I use the animal analogy consciously, although it does demean pigs! Allow me to add that I would be happier to have any one of these women, with the exception of Ms. Fiorina based on her political positions, as president then the lying schemer that currently occupies the Oval Office.
Mark Merriman (NYC, NY)
Unfortunately, we have a president, who teaches us many things on a daily basis, how not to behave. Across the country, women voted for this man, poor people voted for this man, and everyone in between voted for him with full knowledge of his past behavior. None of these people will benefit from his politics, and Republican policies. In fact, we will be paying the price for years to come. This man is a human being, in a very high public office, and he is far from perfect. This is a good lesson for all of us: just because you are famous, does not mean you are perfect, or intelligent, or credible. Unfortunately, when you are so visible in the public eye, it would be nice to conduct yourself accordingly with dignity. But Donal Trump is who he is, and that is not likely to change, he is not a positve role model, and it should not surprise us when he says these awful things; nor should we give him any attention for it--just consider the source.
MWG (KS)
Getting publicity for bad behavior, distracting the populace from focusing on whatever the current scandal or shock is ... apparently works. Behaving badly twittering is this President's shell game. Most adults understand civility means not bullying or not name-calling. Clearly Trump's willing to give a hall pass to brutal murder by fabrication of rogue killers and when that didn't work? This. Another day in Camelot? No, another day in hell.
kagni (Urbana, IL)
What an ugly mind our President has.
Romy (NYC)
He is a downright disgrace to his office and to this country, yet the spectacle hungry mass that constitutes 1/3 of our country doesn't care. This is not a TV show where misogynists get to play the leads. FYI -- Paul Ryan, save your milk-toast comments. You are complicit player in this national fiasco.
Marty (NH)
In the white steepled Baptist church of my youth we learned that all religions have one core tenet: do unto others as you would have done unto you. The Golden Rule. The golden boy with the golden hair is, in fact, working against all that is good and true. And what he so willfully does to others, he most certainly never abides done unto him. This is the behavior of a wayward child. I was raised to tell the truth, and to be kind and compassionate toward others, especially those less fortunate than myself. I, and probably 90% of parents raised my own the same way. How deeply troubling that today's parents, in almost a state of shock, must use the president of the United States as a teaching moment: this is what you DON'T do. I lived through the racial hate of the 60s and the Vietnam war. I have never felt so unmoored in the basic principles of human goodness as I do under this childish and destructive president and his congress.
Nnaiden (Montana)
Perhaps the real point is not that his misogyny far exceeds his racism (Women with European ancestry are not immune from the insults). The real point may be that when he leads everyone - and I mean liberal media included - feels it's okay to follow. He leads people down the path of intolerance...and we follow. Witness: the uproar and personal attacks on Warren, Clinton, insert-the-name-of-another-woman-here, etc that are perpetrated by the press, by special-interest groups, by communities who jump on board after Trump "leads" the way. Our culture is misogynistic. He opens the box and lets it out. Women are people, human beings. People deserve respect and regard. It's not "political correctness," it's respect and civil interaction for another person.
Josephine Jackson (Jacksonville, FL)
I am reminded of the children's story, The Emperor's New Clothes. We all see it, yet nothing is done to end the madness. The behavior is not "juvenile mockery," it is who Trump is...a narcissistic, bar-room brawler... an unevolved human being with lots of money giving him power and visibility...and we Americans do love a good show. The denigration and subjugation of women by men is part of the history and foundation of America. I believe we've come some distance, but much of it is only because of the enactment of laws to protect women's rights and perhaps the honorable efforts of some men to self-manage the tendency toward machismo and the fear of not being seen as a member of the male tribe. There are many women who buy into this lie as well. I pray November 6 will be the moment we can look to as we review what we've all participated in, either by action or inaction, and see a slight turn back to civility, integrity and humanity.
Jean Louis Lonne (France)
Let's see, women make up half the population; they probably vote in a larger percentage than men. Remind me again why any woman will vote for Trump, no matter what you may think of the person running against him. I'm a male, and for the life of me I can't understand....
Anine (Olympia)
Women voters who support Trump are trying to be good for the men in their lives. When you've grown up believing you must always behave in a way that has the approval of men, your soul is compromised to the point where it's difficult to think beyond the patriarchal world you live in. It's the devil you know.
James Stewart (New York)
Trump's language is gross, but his policies are generally good, and post-social justice Obama, real economic growth has returned to the USA. That's good IMHO, and by the way, white has again become, thankfully, a color. The Democrats' behavior this year has equaled Trump's in boorishness - viz., Booker's, Harris's, and Feinstein's at the Kavanaugh hearings - and on economic grounds, I just early-voted straight Republican.
Brad Blumenstock (St. Louis)

I take the message here is directed at women, women should vote against Trump because he is disrespectful to women. Yet during the Presidential elections, women had the power in their hands, they could have overwhelmingly voted for a women to be President, yet it didn't happen that way did it. Trump is President today because of women, he received 52% of the vote of white women. These same women will vote for Trump when he runs again in 2020, many of those women probably agree in Trumps opinion of Miss Clifford's look, many probably chuckled when they heard the comment, they like the way Trump tells it like it is, so articles like this are self defeating as well as delusional. People will vote against Trump to save their health care, or the environment etc, but issues like this will fall on deaf ears.
Steve Andrews (Kansas)
I’m not a psychiatrist, so my judgment of the President doesn’t carry any weight, but I believe him to have narcissistic personality disorder and I believe him to be a bully. Even if I am right, none of this matters. He is the President, and it is what it is. What is much more disturbing are Mr. Trump’s fanatics. Those who say that “he tells it like it is” or he “speaks the way we do.” How do we cope with bullying when it pervades a quarter to a third of the electorate? It would be different if Mr. Trump’s followers acknowledged that he is sometimes crude and destructive, but they think that he is creating, on the whole, more good than evil. But the general opinion of Mr. Trump among his admirers, at least as it sifts through the media, is that they blindly and militantly regard him as a saint and are willing to attack, verbally and physically, anyone who disagrees with them. I think that this is a very dangerous situation, and I think that Mr. Trump is completely aware of what he is doing and revels in it. I think he would be satisfied if he destroyed the nation, because it would show that he is more powerful than a county that is over two hundred years old, than all of the people who have contributed to the greatness of the nation, than the 330 or so million people who inhabit the country now, and than all the greatness and contributions this country has made to the world and humanity.
Thomas (Iowa)
This is just a symptom of Trump’s unbridled ego and off-the-charts level of insecurity combined with his complete absence of compassion, empathy and moral compass. He won’t change — why should he when there are not only millions of people who will excuse him, but millions within that group who actively support and admire him? Is there any question that the mood and actions of “the leader of the free world” are disproportionately driven by how many “likes” he gets on a given tweet? That’s just where we are today.
Pat Boice (Idaho Falls, ID)
One of the Republican Senators, either Graham or Hatch, described the treatment of Kavanaugh as a national disgrace. What a farce! The real national disgrace is Trump and his supporters. We are a laughingstock in many places around the world. I'm voting a straight Democratic ticket this time! We have early voting here in Idaho and I'm heading down to vote shortly!
Larry (Richmond VA)
Even I was surprised to see Trump garner most of the white women's vote, but it only reinforces the impression many of us have had since puberty, that however much women complain, they are inevitably drawn to powerful, aggressive, ruthless men, in whom a little misogyny is no big deal.
Sharon (Los angeles)
@Larry. That is your opinion. Many, many WOMEN would disagree. So when you become a woman, you can make that sweeping pronouncement...and you would still be wrong.
J (NYC)
The really frightening thing are the cheering, laughing, screeches of approval that come from the audiences at his rallies when he makes one of these statements. And the smirking tweets of approval from right-wing media organizations that follow. Is the conservative half of America really so no-class and soulless like Trump now?
CP (NJ)
@J, yes. And they are still less than half, but not by much. Propaganda sells.
Brad Blumenstock (St. Louis)
@J Apparently the answer to your question is yes.
Oriole (Toronto)
As Trump's presidency wears on, it gets uglier and uglier.
YellowRose (Dallas)
That guy is in the White House because he appealed to “reality show” voters who haven’t a clue about how one should run a country. And every day is a new episode to keep them glued to him.
Mike Livingston (Cheltenham PA)
I don't disagree, but there are insults all around these days everyone should calm down
sedanchair (Seattle)
@Mike Livingston What are you talking about? Trump is the president and he is almost uniquely insulting, offensive and crass--the only people who exceed him are his followers. To subsume this into some kind of vague-minded "everyone is doing it" is idiotic.
Darrin (Stinson)
@Mike Livingston He Works For US! He is a public servant, we hired him and pay his salary. Have you ever known anyone to talk to their bosses in such a manner?
J. Faye Harding (Mt. Vernon, NY)
@Mike Livingston NO, you should wake up. Disgusting and ignorant.
Andrew (Washington DC)
This whole thing boggles my mind especially with women who are pro-Trump. Last night I had dinner with an old college chum and she was ferrous in her defense of Trump and all he has said and done. I was flabbergasted but not surprised as Republicans are excusing this heinous behavior of their "dear leader."
Cyclopsina (Seattle)
I think this is all a distraction from bigger issues. While I would agree that Trump's behavior towards women AND men is unpresidential and completely horrible, the Trump administration's ethical and legal scandals really impact our Country in a substantial way. I think Trump does not act in our nation's interests, but his own. And that is the worst part of his presidency.
Don Pirrigno (Austin TX)
“You cannot continue to be the party in power if the voters you are appealing to are white men over 60.” Wrong. You can, thanks to years of Republican gerrymandering. Austin, one of the most progressive urban areas in the country, has been divided into five congressional districts designed to dilute its voting power: five thin slices that append to massive, mostly rural, white, Republican surrounding county blocks, only one of which districts is held by a Democrat (Lloyd Doggett). That’s how Republicans will keep winning.
Jim Cerullo (Boynton Beach, Fl.)
The buffoon's behavior in the past two years would have been quickly rejected if it had been written about him before it happened. Sadly, it's probably only the tip of the iceberg of his low IQ ramblings. There's a reason he didn't attend Wharton for 4 years. Someone also needs to dig into his supposed two years at Fordham. There is no way the Jesuits would have put up with this low life for two years. A professor at Wharton described Trump as the worst student he had ever had in his classes. Get some Jesuit recollections of this disgraceful excuse for a human being.
Mr Chang Shih An (Taiwan)
I said to many of my friends that if Trump was elected POTUS we would live in very interesting times. Are you not entertained? The media gives every second they can about everything Trump does. Trump is the ultimate troll and he knows how to make people go nuts. Trump is not doing anything that the media who hates him does all the time. Lots of popcorn being popped in my oven.
AE (California )

I think it's remarkable how many times a day I read another story that seeks to lump people into neat little homogenous groups. Here we again try to paint a picture of Trump someone women should dislike for his routine disrespect of women. Trump can clearly be an idiot with his twitter antics, school yard taunts and outsize ego. But his attacks don't discriminate in favor of men or disproportionately target women. There is a list of men as long as my arm he has given plenty of equal time to. Just ask Kim Jung Un, Marco Rubio or just about anyone else who criticized or opposed Trump.
Charlotte (Florence, MA)
Unless this article has a suggestion on what we can do about it, it is merely doubling down on these insults and putting them all in a glossy scrapbook for prez trump when I bet all these women wish the insults would go away and be forgotten by history. Wondering whether you have too much access to Prez Trump who we all know loves/hates the not really failing NYT.
Rand Dawson (Tempe, AZ)
Not condoning his choice of words, but it seems to me that Trump is an "equal opportunity insulter". He insults anybody who he feels is doing him wrong. To say he exclusively attacks women or hates women or is scared of women is a stretch. When he insults men, is he a man hater? When he attacks white people is he a white-person hater? When he ridicules Obama does that make him racist? To say that he is rude and crude and has a personality disorder is appropriate. This woman-hater narrative is bogus.
Margo (Atlanta)
This is a good point. Plus, as an adult I generally ignore personal comments from non-acquaintances anyway. Call me a name and what does it matter? if it was someone close to me that would be a different matter. We all know the presidents' crude remarks are off in the heat of the moment, when he can speak more considerately it is better.
LovingFall (USA)
@Rand Dawson To be sure, he insults a lot of people, but this is different. There’s a reason he doesn’t usually employ the same gender-neutral terms for women as when he insults men. Ask yourself: is he insulting someone using words *specifically created* to insult women (the “B” word, “C” word, slut, whore, etc.), or is he denigrating her physical appearance in a way that brings a sexual element into it?
John Malone (Atlanta Suburbs)
Ok, if this is the level of discourse the President needs, then someone get that draft dodger a mirror.

What a shame. A president and a porn star attacked each other on Twitter. Our country is already a joke to the rest of the world now.
Been There (U.S. Courts)
It is obvious to all adults in the world that Donald Trump is an adulterer, abuser, predator and all-around misogynist. So, what are the mental aberrations or sexual perversions that explain why any women continue to vote for Trump and his fellow Republican swine?
Chico (New Hampshire)
Donald Trump is an ugly man with a shameful meanness towards women that is beyond rationalization.
T3D (San Francisco)
‘Horseface,’ ‘Lowlife,’ ‘Fat, Ugly’ And this is the type of behavior that republicans think is such a good way for the president of America to behave and an excellent way to Make America Great Again? Instead of being ashamed of their cult leader they're proud of him? Does this exemplify life in America? Seriously?
sunnyshel (Long Island NY)
He doesn't demean women. He demeans some women, certain women. And that's all right with other women because the so-called sisterhood is meaningless to women; it's a fiction, like the united states of . . . There's no special club. It's all about privilege, position and keeping it. Plumbing doesn't automatically make you a decent person. So, in the end, who cares? "Your mother wears combats boots" was a typical teenage insult when I was growing up in the early 1960's. So was "If you're white it's all right, if you're black get back." Politically incorrect and insensitive, for sure, but as true now as it was then. And, face it, some people are just plain stupid regardless of gender. Nothing this woofer says surprises me. No reaction by those who pee sitting down surprises me either. People are people, no one's got a lock on sanctity or turpitude. That's way deeper inside than any bladder function.
coale johnson (5000 horseshoe meadow road)
a porn star describes our president's genitals. dictators murder people on foreign soil and the president shrugs. our friends are our enemies because the president says so. climate change may not be a hoax but it might change back because the president says so. we are going off a cliff. the cult of trump.
Patricia Gonzalez (Costa Rica)
Anotther episode in the Trump White House reality show: thrasy, vulgar and just plain tasteless... with the addition of a porn actress as part of the plot. So disgusting, I cannot conceive how this guy (Trump) can be trusted with her own grandchildren, let alone be trusted to run an entire country! Needless to say, of course this lady in particular is far from being a victim... so sad and disturbing!
Chris Anderson (Chicago)
My goodness. If you are fat you are fat. If you are ugly then you are ugly. It's always been like that.
J. Faye Harding (Mt. Vernon, NY)

LovingFall (USA)
@Chris Perhaps, but normal human beings know to keep those thoughts to themselves.

Horseshoe Crab (South Orleans, MA )
Beyond believable the behavior of this man, he gives new meaning to the word misogynist. The 60 Minutes interview with Ms. Daniels was noteworthy for the fact that she appears to be a thoughtful, sensitive, informed, intelligent and kind woman, the type of person one wouldn't mind calling a friend - she is in fact, in every sense of the word, the antithesis of Mr. Trump.
Dennis D. McDonald (Alexandria, Virginia)
My interpretation of Trump's crude behavior is really very simple: Trump fears women who stand up to him. Why this is is rooted in how he was raised, most likely. And, he's too old to change. Republicans who are not retiring from public office who don't condemn this juvenile behavior are complicit. They need to go.
Aline Cullen (San Luis Obispo , Ca)
I guess Scott Reed thinks it’s just the next twenty days that matter...for re-election. Then women are fair game again. I guess younger feel women they have just enough equality (hard fought for by their mothers, aunts and grandmothers), to be complacent. Beyond sad. Dangerous.
rjon (Mahomet, Ilinois)
Reacting to body shaming isn’t indicative of women’s strength. Sadly, in this commercial culture, they’re used to it. Their true strength lies in their judgment regarding who’s a genuinely kind and decent human being. Every time this small, testerone deprived, little man makes a comment like this it gives me hope that women will again roar—that’s what it took for them to get the right to vote, now they need to use it.
DB (Central Coast, CA)
“The Ends Justify the Means” is the core principle guiding Trump and the current GOP party. This was clearly on display during the Merrick Garland nomination and the GOP opposite tack for the Kavanaugh nomination (delay one, rush another, both in anticipation of elections). Voter suppression, gerrymandering, Fox News as a GOP propaganda machine, laws that favor the donor class - all stem from this same philosophy. Insulting women is a means that Trump sees as successful - he said as much during his 60 Minutes interview when asked to explain his mocking of Dr. Ford. The current GOP is utterly corrupt. It must be swept out of office in spite of the firewall the GOP has constructed. Only then might a more principled GOP emerge from its ashes. Democrats are the party that currently represents government of “We the People”
Marilyn (Everywhere)
Trump's comments about women are just one of many reasons why I remain utterly confused as to why any self-respecting woman could bring herself to vote for him. Not only are the comments hateful and demeaning, they also come from the office of the president. I fear that Trump is, once again, giving permission to people to be hateful. What sort of example does he provide for the adults of the U.S., let alone the teens and kids?
noni (Boston, MA)
Although lacking in technological savvy, I’d love to see someone start a Twitter movement called #lookatthatface (his comment about Carly Fiorina). It would be simple postings of the portraits of women with a quote from or about them. Some candidates that spring to mind: Mother Theresa, Maya Angelou, Eleanor Roosevelt, Shirley Chisholm.... The character, courage and compassion in those beautiful faces speak volumes.
Linda (New Jersey)
I've worked professionally with children and adolescents for many years. To describe our President's comments about women as childish, juvenile, or adolescent is insulting to the large majority of young people who never talk that way.
Siseman (Westport)
I hope he keeps it up for the next three weeks- a reminder to vote BLUE!
Leslie (Missouri)
Generally, defamation is a false and unprivileged statement of fact that is harmful to someone's reputation, and published "with fault," meaning as a result of negligence or malice. State laws often define defamation in specific ways. Libel is a written defamation; slander is a spoken defamation.
Marilyn (new york)
That may be the case. Now, look at Mr Trump. He is tall, has a great body since he works out like mad. Beautiful tapered hands always carefully manicured . A scholar and always a gentleman. I also heard that he designs all of his clothing. That's why he looks so wonderful in his suits. What more could voters want in a president?
Mr Chang Shih An (Taiwan)
POTUS Trump sure does say some crass things in public. I know many people who say the same thing in private but would not do so publicly. Women say much nastier things about other women than Trump has. It does not make it right but people are tired of the political correctness. This whole thing now is Stormy got suckered by her new fame loving lawyer and she now has to pay POTUS legal fees.
MLE53 (NJ)
@Mr Chang Shih An Political correctness is important. The crassness of trump is not acceptable in public by a President or anyone. The hatred screamed at trump rallies should never be encouraged.
EmP (RI)
@Mr Chang Shih An Political correctness is a fairly new term. However, how many past presidents stood on a podium or sat for an official interview and called women "dogs" and "pigs"? This isn't anti-political correctness, its simply insulting.
Basha (Martha's Vineyard, ma)
@Mr Chang Shih An Me Chang, I suggest you focus on your own Country and its problems instead of taking money from Trump to support him.
BTO (Somerset, MA)
So Trump has been abashing women, this is not new, he's probably been doing it since he could walk. The real shame here is that it's tough enough to raise children when you have good role models, never mind when you have someone like him in charge. Most of us were raised to respect others, it's a shame that his parents never instilled that in him. We need to keep in mind that what goes around, comes around and some day he will pay the price for his ignorance.
CP (NJ)
@BTO, there are many of us, including this older white guy, for who Trump's Day of Reckoning cannot come soon enough. Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin understood the meaning of respect 50 years ago (and others did for hundreds of years prior); I guess that's a part of his education that Emperor Donald missed.
shirls (Manhattan)
@BTO Hope you're right; but not holding my breath! 'cause? he's RICH! & has the power of POTUS ... for now.
Ruth (RI)
@BTO. I hope he does pay a price for his ignorance very soon. The upcoming mid-terms would be a good place to start.
Kathy White (GA)
Political leaders and presidents usually have the self-control, or the moral principle, to avoid public derogatory comments regarding someone’s looks even if the individual is a critic. President Trump used his celebrity and now uses his bully pulpit to avoid addressing the essence of criticism, or the reasons for some civil lawsuits against him, through adolescent distractions. President Trump’s personality problems go beyond apparent misogyny. There is his lack of empathy for human beings, revealing itself in vengeful and inhuman immigration policy, in essentially ignoring the murder of a US resident in Turkey with the cold reasoning of money-making deals being more important; there is his needless abdication of US power and influence threatening US national security and the safety of all Americans; and then, there are the lies, easily fact-checked, that encompass a range of lies, from an imaginary better healthcare bill to the impact of tax cuts. I don’t know how Trump supporters rationalize such realities but I suggest it is no where near rationalization and is more like purposeful denial. Whether Trump appeals to them because of his white nationalist bullying, because of his lack of humanity, because of his facade as a celebrity tough guy and successful businessman, because of his misogyny, no one can provide evidence Trump is a responsible leader supporting American, democratic, or human values.
mzmecz (Miami)
@Kathy White You are on the mark! They like him because he distracts and riles to his side the very people Republicans most abuse, the poor and uneducated. This allows Republicans to pass tax cuts and become ever wealthier at the expense of everyone else.
T3D (San Francisco)
@Kathy White\ Excellent analysis. Trump doesn't care who he hurts as long as he gets his own way. Absolute textbook full-blown psychopathic behavior.
kglen (Philadelphia Pa)
@Kathy White. You describe so well what a Trump supporter supports, and it paints a very frightening picture of the values of large part of our population. I'm not buying their weak defenses about their pocketbooks or his supposed effectiveness. A new awareness of the mindset of my fellow citizens is, for me, perhaps the most disturbing aspect of the past three years
MIMA (heartsny)
I have three grandsons, all in middle school, an age where it is normal to pay heed to girls and discuss girls. My grandsons will not be shielded from the words from this gross, crass, disrespectful man, Donald Trump, the President. My grandsons’ dads, my sons-in-laws, are most respectful, decent guys. I’m so happy my daughters have these guys in their lives. But even with the decency at home of my sons-in-laws, how do they fully explain that this president is inappropriate, totally out of line and wrong to be spewing these despicable names? My grandsons are really nice kids. There are many really nice kids in this country. It breaks my heart that youth here even have to be bombarded with the likes of Donald Trump. And it scares me that they think our country, for which their grandpa and great grandpas have fought for, in faraway lands to secure a future, could now possibly be ever led by the vulgar person who sits in the White House and dishonorably speaks about women. Women are my daughters. Women are many of our daughters. Women are us. That this disgusting man may taint my grandsons’ idea of what’s right and wrong when speaking or thinking of women is beyond any bounds of decency.
Jackie (Missouri)
@MIMA It is probably also going to affect the way that they, as good boys and girls, think that a President, and other authority figures, should be respected. As for the bad boys and girls, it's probably going to give them further license to "be best" at being bad (foul-mouthed, self-loathing, disobedient, disrespectful, opportunistic, amoral, immoral, greedy and promiscuous scofflaws.)
Banjokatt (Chicago, IL)
@MIMA I agree. I am virtually certain my three grown sons would never make negative and belittling comments about a woman’s about the appearance of young women. We have had age -appropriate talks about how to treat girls and women since they were quite young. Trumpf’s behavior is how immature boys in high school treat girls. And it is reflective of how frat boys treat young women in college. Have you ever heard the term “pig party”?
Dennis D. McDonald (Alexandria, Virginia)
@MIMA Trump is NOT a gentleman. Republicans -- our fellow Americans -- are OK with that as long as they are "winning."
Kristi (Atlanta)
To me, the lowest of his lows (which is saying a lot), was when he denied sexually assaulting the woman on the airplane and the People magazine writer by implying that they weren’t attractive enough for him to do so. What this article doesn’t cover is how he manages to demean and insult women even when “complimenting” their appearance. For example, on Howard Stern, he bragged about the beauty of women in his pageants, but would refer to them as “my girls,” rendering them a) his possessions to do with as he liked (spying on them backstage while they were getting dressed and undressed) and b) children (especially nauseating because he owned Miss Teen USA as well, and, according to some past participants, spied on them while they were changing backstage as well). Or, when bragging about Ivanka’s attractiveness, he noted that if he weren’t her father, he would be dating her.
Professor (Kent, OH)
In reply to Kristi's excellent comment: Trump didn't "date". He didn't "date" Stormy Daniels. He did something else to her. He didn't mean "If I weren't Ivanka's father I'd be dating her." He meant, "If I weren't her father, I'd be doing something else to her."
Drs. Mandrill and Peos Balanitis with Srs. Mkoo, Basha and Wewe Kutomba (southern ohio)
Wecringeinunison: He implies that he would do more than just date her. Almost Shakespearian, eh ...?
Anne-Marie Hislop (Chicago)
Trump is a bully who tries to feel better about himself by denigrating those around him. He seems, in some ways, to be particularly threatened by women. He is certainly proof that money does not necessarily go hand-in-hand with class or breeding. What is really sad is that he has a base who thinks that the debasement of women is not only ok, but fun and funny. The ones who cause me the most consternation are the women in his crowds. Do they not get that such language, such attacks on women affect them, too? Do they not understand that they are helping to support the world's hostility towards their daughters and granddaughters? Are they really so oblivious?
Brad Steele (Da Hood, Homie)
@Anne-Marie Hislop The fact that women are at his rallies is prima face evidence that they are oblivious to his abusive personality.
Ann Anderson (Portland Oregon)
@Anne-Marie Hislop Answer key: No, no, yes.
kglen (Philadelphia Pa)
Yes.

Upon hearing Trump’s latest ugly tweets, his white “evangelical” followers all eagerly say: “we give him a mulligan”.

A woman that pulls the levers forthe likes of these folks must really honestly hate herself. Nothing else makes any sense.
Dave....Just Dave (Somewhere in Florida)
This only adds to the reasons why I call Trump our "Bum-in-Chief;" heavy emphasis on the word, "bum."
Blackmamba (Il)
When will Trump come up with an apt clever descriptive nickname for Ivana, Ivanka, Marla, Tiffany, Melania, Kellyanne, Sarah, Laura, Ainsley and Jeanine? Perhaps he can get some suggestions from Angela Merkel and Theresa May.
Nancy (Florida)
And yet he continues to receive support at cheering rallies and from the U.S. Congress. And just by presenting this as another eccentric thing our President does, you are also normalizing it, New York Times. None of this is normal. Stop enabling it with normal news stories. Stop allowing public figures to deem facts "anternative" or even false. Stop straddling the fence yourself, about right and wrong. You're aiding and abetting the chaos. Find a way to lift fact above fiction, or you have truly become irrelevant.
Six Minutes Remaining (Before Midnight)
@Nancy I disagree. It is a fact that the President regularly spews misogynist statements. Not reporting such facts does -- what? Would it therefore be 'normal' for news -- factual and vetted -- to ignore a President's statements? Precisely because this 'Administration' is not normal, I want it documented. History cannot judge properly without such documentation. Warts and all.
Nancy (Florida)
@Six Minutes Remaining Documenting without discriminating does us no good. It is highly inappropriate for the President of the United States to say demeaning things about women. This FACT should be presented every time he does it. It's not a judgment, it's also a fact, and if you act wishy washy about it and allow "both sideism" on matters of appropriateness, you have a civilization without a rudder. Called America.
Nancy (Florida)

This "horseface" comment may have finally put Trump at the nadir of public opinion about his lack of civility. If the worst thing he could think of was this, he's out of insults.
karl (Charleston)
I am embarrassed!
WilliamGaddis'sGhost (Athens, Georgia)
You know what we hate about other people? The things we hate about ourselves. If I looked like that clown, I'd be denigrating everyone and their mother ad infinitum.
Gert (marion, ohio)
Isn't it sad that we, as what was once the most respected and powerful nation in the world proud call ourselves an American to the rest of the world, are reading a article about how low our values have sunk that we elect a president who can't even act in a dignified respectful manner and talks like a potty mouthed spoiled brat.
D.j.j.k. (south Delaware)
The women supporters must love his abuse. They keep electing the culture of corruption who are the GOP. You reap what you sow.
Mixilplix (Santa Monica )
We get it. He's an insecure juvenile coward who hates women. But why then do so many white rural women support him?
applecounty (England, UK)
Has anyone investigated why his female demographic are supporting Trump and the GOP?
Steve (Yuba City, CA)
@Mixilplix, people feel most comfortable with what they're used to.
Mixilplix (Santa Monica )
E Warren gets condemned for trying to defend her Native American roots, yet Trump can call your cancer-stricken mother ugly and easy, and his base loves it. What does that really say about a third of this nation?
Chico (New Hampshire)
What kind of decent sane adult man refers to any woman in those terms, and then repeats it as a badge of honor, let alone a man who is supposed to be our President. Donald Trump is completely unfit, incompetent and a disgrace to the office of President and to the male specie. Melania tell us again about your Anti-Bullying Campaign on social media, I suggest the biggest bully in the country on social media is your own husband. I don't understand why the people who run twitter would not kick Trump off of the medium for abusing and lying about people; this would send the perfect signal that bullying and vicious and character assassination will not be tolerated by anyone
Allison (Colorado)
I hope every person posting who finds the President's behavior appalling, as I do, refrains from similarly insulting his appearance; otherwise, we do not retain the higher moral ground.
Doremus Jessup (On the move)
@Allison Sorry Allison. The man is a self righteous, repulsive pig, and should be called one to his very repugnant face.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
He is not a well man. There’s still no telling what he might do if he ever discovers that Mrs. Clinton has been telling the truth about him all along. I suggest removing all of the White House mirrors now before he gets a good look at himself.
Lilou (Paris)
Well, Trump's fat, has tiny hands and other tiny parts, his elaborate comb-over has no discernible origin in his scalp, his mouth resembles a body part with a different bodily function, he wears bizarre orange make-up and, it's a wonder his angry mug is the face of our nation. Trump's an insult artist, to be sure. When he goes low, he then goes even lower. But, thanks to a politicized electoral college, gerrymandering, possible Russian interference, and despite his vulgatity, ignorance and sub-par physical appearance -- he won. I don't think his looks or his actions can turn his base from him. Part of American culture champions making fun of others. His base applauds this. Democrats and independents need to vote in record numbers in 3 weeks if they want to flip the House. Most House Republicans ascribe to Trump's anti-American policies. This has nothing to do with Trump's looks. It's their personal addiction to wealth and power, and total disregard for the majority of Americans ... Trump's their model for the ugly American.
Ed Mahala (New York)
He demeans woman, minorities, the disabled, grieving families, refugees, immigrants, and war heroes. That is what tiny, tiny, little men do.
David (Palmer Township, Pa.)
I'm sure when Trump looks in the mirror he sees the image of what he once looked like. He should take a long look. His paunchy figure and funny looking fake hair are open to ridicule. However, decent people do not judge people by their looks. Just saying......
Peter (CT)
Donald Trump doesn't talk nice, everybody knows that - and we've known about his being a pig for decades. I don't wish Scott Reed luck, but I do feel kind of sorry for him.
Moira (UK)
@Peter Sociopaths use the 'pity-party' tactic. You fell for it.
dcnative (DC)
Trump brags about his "ivy league" education. His behavior is of someone who failed kindergarten.
Stephen (NYC)
If Trump ends up in jail where he belongs, he won't have access to his cosmetics case. No hair dye, hard-to-hold hairspray, Propecia (according to his doctor), ManTan or sunlamp. This vain, unattractive man will learn a lesson about karma. Lock HIM up.
SW (Los Angeles)
Trump’s looting of our treasury and our national treasure (land) demeans all of us. What is troubling is that his sycophants don’t see it.
Geraldine (Sag Harbor, NY)
I'm trying to teach my 13 year old son that real men, like his Dad don't behave this way. It's not easy. His friends have all keyed in on this juvenile behavior and try to emulate the hostility toward women and girls that Trump is modeling for them. When corrected he is genuinely confused about how the President can say these things in public discourse but he can't! I literally have to break it down into a discussion of moral behavior. Trump is a rich white man and rich men are getting away with anything they want nowadays because we have an awful lot of people in this country who have replaced religion with money. They think wealth is a reward for virtue and social value and poverty is a curse for laziness and poor decisions. We are not rich people and he cannot get away with saying these things and not suffer repercussions and be penalized for this. His Dad told him that he needs to be respectful of women because after he leaves his Mom he'll more than likely be working for at least one woman in his life and they will not be kind to a jerk! When women are running this society the nice guys won't finish last anymore. We'll make sure of it.
Nolan (Not your business)
@Geraldine First of all, just because he is rich doesn't mean that he is bad. Trump is actually a great president(pay attention to real news and you will realize that). He doesn't just attack women, it is not about sex. You just want a pinpoint to aim at him to make him seem bad because he is actually doing great things which you thought would never happen.
Michael (New Orleans)
@Geraldine I'm so sorry that you and other parents across the country (and indeed, the world!) are having to address this abominable behavior by the POTUS! I'm 71 years old and cannot believe that THIS is what the country I grew up in and whose military I served (USAF 1965-69) has become in 2018. This is a very low point in our history as the leader of the world in principles, virtue, compassion and helping the downtrodden, whoever and wherever they are. I'm just sick over this. All I can say at this point is VOTE!!
artfuldodger (new york)
@Geraldine If you afraid your son and his friends are going to copy President Trumps rude behavior, you would be very lucky if they emulated him in other ways, like the way he doesn't drink alcohol or take drugs , or the way he is a high achiever, and he loves his country
Josh Hill (New London)
Honestly, I wonder about this. As Tim from the UK points out, people insult Trump's appearance right and left -- orange skin, strange hair, little hands -- and as the article points out, even make fun of the shape of his penis. And it seems that Trump is just as willing to insult men (and newspapers). In looking at the Times' list of insults, it seems that the main difference is that he tends to insult according to stereotype -- women are ugly, but men are weak or small. In no way do I condone Trump's bullying. but it's hard not to get the impression that there's a double standard in the coverage here.
Marcos Campos (New York)
@Josh Hill Reality TV hosts call attention to themselves and others... This is what they do. They are not presidential material. The remarks spoken by this so-called POTUS before and after being "elected" to high office are unbecoming of his new post.
Leslie M (Upstate NY)
@Josh Hill. You are probably right about the double standard, but sadly the case is that he started it first. Someone criticizes his policies or statements and he attacks them personally. It is his MO and somehow it works for him.
Andreas (Atlanta, GA)
@Josh Hill Ah yes, the victim card. Persecuted Trump just fighting back against the vast conspiracy. This is pretty much the propaganda that the right wing press has been pushing all along. I remember a black president, not too long ago who endured an onslaught of insults that dwarfs whatever Trump is getting. Striking difference of behavior, however, isn't it?
Chico (New Hampshire)

JohnH (Boston area)
May I take umbrage? I'm white, male, cis-gender, and darn it, over 60 by quite a bit. Trump's lies, misogyny, pettiness, adolescent habits of speech and disdain, and total lack of capability for the office he holds offend me, disgust me, and I reject them totally. I'm not sure how to define Mr. Trump's loyal band of supporters, but please help us find a label that doesn't include me.
Charlotte (Florence, MA)
@JohnH Yes I’m an educated white woman who did not vote for Trump. The educated white females, usually wives, who did should hand their degree back.
JKL (Virginia)
@JohnH I heartily agree with JohnH of Boston. I cringe whenever I hear or read that DJT's core base of support is "white men over 60" (who, me?). Can't the press refine this a bit? How about "insecure white men over 60 whose fathers emotionally and/or physically abused their mothers when they were children, are deeply dissatisfied with their status in life and kick dogs"? Or some such? Can't we qualify Trump's base of support to exclude me and JohnH? Please!
Tjohn (NY)
Must we view everything through the lens of identity politics? Trump is an awful person and a terrible president, and there are plenty of examples of him attacking men with derogatory comments and characterizations. I suspect that criticism of his behavior would resonate more with everyone, even his base, if it was more universal.
Rocky (Maine)
@Tjohn---He may not be as good as Harry and Ike, but he is certainly a better President than Clinton, Bush JR and Obama.
Andreas (Atlanta, GA)
@Tjohn You may be right about the resonance, but he clearly targets vulnerable groups. Ignoring that would be somewhat like reverse-identity politics. And I'm no fan of it either but it's disingenuous to deny the roots of it.
Brad Blumenstock (St. Louis)
@Rocky Thanks for the laugh.
Anne Ominous (San Francisco)
“We need a strong dose of message discipline out of the White House for the next 20 days,” Mr. Reed said. “If not, this midterm election becomes a crapshoot.” This is the take-home from this Republican strategist?! We need to do a better job of muzzling the President, not allowing him to reveal his character? How about a Republican strategy that looks more like this: we need to admit that we have debased our party, and have lost any credibility because we have not distanced ourselves from this president who behaves in this manner. Trump labeled himself a Republican for convenience and selfish political gain, and we are sorry that we have allowed and facilitated his egregious behavior, to advance our own narrow interests. Doing so has not only (possibly irreparably) damaged the reputation of the party, but also that of the country. It may be too late to save the reputation of the party, but we can start to make amends by calling on our sitting Republican legislators to, in good conscience, perform their elected function to stand as a check against egregious behavior, personal and political, in the executive branch. We have facilitated a crass, selfish huckster for too long. We would like to apologize to the American people, make amends, and ask for the opportunity to prove ourselves capable of serving you better. But I do not expect any such reckoning as long as the likes of Scott Reed, Newt Gingrich, and Karl Rove remain Mullahs of the Republican Party.
Dennis Maher (Lake Luzerne NY)
@Anne Ominous Yeah, but you would have to admit that certain issues like abortion, lower taxes, fewer regulations, and an end to entitlements and any governmental acts of caring are not the raison d'etre of your party.
Wayne (Brooklyn, New York)
The college-educated women who voted for Trump need to have their heads examined. The women who sit behind Trump at his campaign-style speeches with signs "Women for Trump" are a disgrace.
Timshel (New York)
Republican women certainly knew Trump was a sexist long ago, but many of them, just as many male Republicans are, blinded by their greed voted for him and will do so again in 2020. Not all Republicans are so brutally cold, but when you have a party now so viciously devoted to fattening a few people’s pocketbooks at the expense of everyone else, anyone who joins them is either easily misled or sickeningly selfish. The present Republican Party represents the people with the same views as those who were loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolution, the South during our Civil War, and those who condemn real American patriots like Edward Snowden.
rosa (ca)
I learned decades ago to stay away from anyone that delights in calling anyone cruel names. It doesn't matter if they are male or female. Ditto for the ones standing around listening, maybe laughing, too. Just stay away from them. Don't date them. Don't have sex with them. Don't bring them coffee. If it is not a crime, turn them into HR. If it is a crime, turn them into the cops. Even sociopaths have to live by the rules.
Mitch (Miami)
Where's the outrage? Where you stand depends upon where you sit. I just heard US Senator Kennedy (R-GA) respond to Trump's bizzare (but par-for-the-course) comments about women and other issues, e.g., "horse face." Kennedy says, "I wish he wouldn't do it," "he gets anxious when he has unexpressed thoughts," "I don't agree with it," "he won't change." Can you imagine such mealy mouth commentary if President Obama or Clinton said these things while holding the esteemed Office of the Presidency? Kennedy and his ilk would say, "outrageous," "shouldn't be president," "psychopath," "impeachable," "an embarrassment." Politics is so hypocritical and transparent. Where are the lions of the Senate? Such small people hold these offices. I think I need to spend less time in the city in which I have primarily lived for the past 40 years - DC. Congress members and others with a platform: man-up, woman-up and start getting concerned about your legacy and conscience. Trump is mentally ill and something should be done about it.
Gert (marion, ohio)
@Mitch This is the same Kennedy who performed for Trump and called John Dean (I'm paraphrasing) "a slimy rat backed into a corner" in front of a Congressional hearing.
Michael (New Orleans)
@Mitch JFTR, John Kennedy represents Louisiana in the U.S. Senate -- not GA -- and speaking as a LA resident, I can tell you that he's the worst kind of GOP hypocrite who talks out of both sides of his mouth. He comes across as this folksy, down home, good ole boy, but he's actually a very savvy politician (who BTW, used to be a Democrat until he figured out that it's easier to get elected in this bright red state if you're a Republican!), who would sell out his grandmother for a buck. And the dummies in this state just eat it up like grits b/c he's pro-life and pro-guns -- the only issues most people here 'care' about!
Chrisc (NY)
The current Mrs. Trump has her work cut out for her. There's plenty of unbest behavior at home to tackle!
ABC123 (USA)
A big problem is that we have only one candidate from each major party and neither one is a perfect fit. I did not vote for Trump, and I think such talk/behavior about women is absolutely disgusting. However, there are some real topics where I agree strongly with Trump and/or the Republican party such as… capitalism/free markets (as compared to socialism) and small government (as compared to big/nanny state government). Meanwhile, there are other topics on which I strongly agree with the Democratic party such as… encouraging the use of contraception, a women’s right to choose an abortion, gun control, separation of church and state, homosexual rights, etc. And still, there are other topics where I kind of fall in the middle of the two parties. I wish there were more candidates/parties instead of a mere two, having to fit into their party’s mold. Unfortunately, in this country, we only have 2 choices- Democrat and Republican. It’s like going into an ice cream shop and having a choice of only chocolate or vanilla. Meanwhile, there are dozens and dozens of other flavors that could and should be offered. So, for many, they may not like Trump’s behavior, but they can only pick the person who “best” aligns with their thinking on the major political topics.
kathy (SF Bay Area)
No. People who support that grotesque creature simply have no standards of thought or behavior, for him or for themselves.
Karen Lee (Washington, DC)
I'll never understand how Trump comes up with statements like “I refuse to say that because I always insist on being politically correct.” Do his supporters have disordered thinking like that, too?
Sharon (Los angeles)
@Karen Lee His supporters thinking is equally, if not more, disordered than trump's.
Usok (Houston)
Mr. Trump thinks running a government is like running a day time soap opera. The more people watching, the merrier he feels. The daily show rating is the most important parameter. The uproars in the circus tours also count. He loves it. To him, women getting hurt are just the collateral damages, and the price to pay being female.
Paul (NY)
Lying Cheating Trump is at it again, who cares what he says. Lets move the discussion to 1) Federal Deficit - which increased 17% last year due to the Tax Cuts 2) Higher paying jobs 3) Get medical under control 4) address the student loan 5) address the EPA. If one whishes to engage with Lying Cheating Trump -- then go for it (but look into what he is paying and who he hiring at the golf resorts, the taxes he cheats on )
JulieB (NYC)
Hopefully, she got the last word with her "game on, tiny" comeback. Priceless!!
mzmecz (Miami)
Power is a corrupting influence. Remember Abu Ghraib? Gratefully, our parents civilized most of us to control those impulses. DJT was encouraged not to. His over-the-top extravagance, bulling and playboy behavior became his tools to even greater power. Just like the Roman citizenry, a portion of ours likes the spectacle. I can only hope there are enough civil Americans to turn back this primitive impulse. VOTE.
Crossing Overhead (In The Air)
Manny, not all, of these women chose to pick a fight with the president who they are to know doesn’t play by the rules . They all need to grow up, if you’re going to say bad things about the president and the administration, assume you’re going to be called names back, no one got killed, it’s not that big of a deal .
jhart (charlotte)
No, actually it is a very big deal. It clearly reflects tiny's opinion about 50% of the U.S. population, people whom he is supposed to be representing, protecting and whose lives he should have an interest in improving. It reflects his belief that women are not worthy of respect. A man who has that opinion about women should NEVER be the POTUS.
jrinsc (South Carolina)
I'd like to ask any Christian supporters of President Trump who read this comment some honest questions: Could you please help me understand how you explain behavior like this to your children? Do you just ignore it? Should all of humanity live in Christ-like charity, kindness, and love, except for politicians, because being "tough" and "getting things done" has nothing to do with Christian values? Is that separation in the Bible somewhere ("render unto Ceasar...")? Would you feel differently if Hillary Clinton was President and made comments like this? Honestly, I'm really trying to understand how you can support a man like this, and then go to church on Sunday and compartmentalize one's deeply held beliefs that are so clearly at odds with who President Trump is, how he behaves, and the discord and fear he sows in the world.
R (Cambridge)
Perhaps it's time to bring back the duel as a method of promoting good manners in society. Wikipedia tells us that: "The most notorious American duel was the Burr–Hamilton duel, in which notable Federalist and former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton was fatally wounded by his political rival, the sitting Vice President of the United States Aaron Burr. Another American politician, Andrew Jackson, later to serve as a General Officer in the U.S. Army and to become the seventh president, fought two duels, though some legends claim he fought many more. On May 30, 1806, he killed prominent duellist Charles Dickinson, suffering himself from a chest wound which caused him a lifetime of pain. Jackson also reportedly engaged in a bloodless duel with a lawyer and in 1803 came very near dueling with John Sevier. Jackson also engaged in a frontier brawl (not a duel) with Thomas Hart Benton in 1813. On September 22, 1842, future President Abraham Lincoln, at the time an Illinois state legislator, met to duel with state auditor James Shields, but their seconds intervened and persuaded them against it." So plenty of precedent. And the generality of Trump's sporting supporters - including the NRA - should applaud. The threat of a duel is about the only thing that would shut Trump up. But somehow you can't really see him accepting the challenge. A pity - Stormy would trounce him.
rich (hutchinson isl. fl)
"Plow right through" will be women's rallying cry on the way to the polls where they tell Trump, McConnell and the GOP that they are toast.
Rick (Louisville)
It's funny to look back now and remember how everyone kept anticipating the "pivot". That magical moment when Donald was expected to become "presidential" or when he would "grow into the office". It seems very different now that the reality has set in. There will be no growth in any respect for this man. Even when he tries to discuss serious subjects, there is no "there" there, and there never will be. I can accept the fact that he still has supporters even if I don't understand why. It's past time for them to stop trying to defend this kind of behavior though. What they are doing now isn't even a defense. They are simply making excuses for the inexcusable. He can't grow into the office because he can't even grow up.
James Murphy (Providence Forge, Virginia)
Clearly, Trump was referring to himself.
°julia eden (garden state)
this is also in reply and support of KPH's comment which states that the media should stop amplifying djt's message. EXACTLY RIGHT [as in: 'to the point'], bc actions speak louder than words. so please, NYT et al, dig deeper to further expose the devastating damage djt et al are doing while they are out to disrupt the more caring, inclusive [democratic] society, i.e. world we once knew. don't lend credibility to djt's vitriolic lashouts by just repeating them. hopefully, FACTS will finally convince at least some of his staunchest supporters in time to switch sides, before DEEP-FAKE TECH will blow everything apart. [see jennifer finney boylan's opinion in today's NYT].
manoflamancha (San Antonio)
If a male was raised as a child by a wonderful, caring, and loving mother, then he should have no problem in respecting all females. However, if a man judges females by the good high standards of his mother, he may have different opinions about different females. The same goes for females who were raised by a good father and a good mother and their high standards of opinions. Respecting others is important. However, it is important to know the difference between “I think” and “I know.”
gratis (Colorado)
Our President perfectly represents the people who voted for him. And this is the reason (along with the Electoral College) that he will be re-elected. Trump is the Face of America.
Melda Page (Augusta Maine)
and that is exactly why I regret that I will die being an American.
Jan Newman, M.D., FACS (Clinton,MT)
The most astonishing thing is that people still support this disgusting, totally incompetent cruel human being. We have had 2 massive hurricanes with lost of life and property and there is no government response. The mess of child internment is a national disgrace. Drug prices are out the ceiling for no reason but profiteering, nothing done. The infrastructure is falling apart and Trump and the Republicans give wealthy cronies tax breaks . Trump’s behavior is symbolic of a far greater disease of lack of caring and common sense that will claim our country’s wellbeing.
Martin Veintraub (East Windsor, NJ)
Trump's vicious misogyny is of course a carefully vetted, rehearsed and planned strategy. He might walk it back for 20 days or he might double down. He's gonna win either way. If he walks back, then the designated pundits will comment how presidential he's being, instead of how cynical and disingenuous he is. And Republicans win the women's vote? Not f some actual issues come up. Health care for example. Voter suppression? Election rigging? Looking at you, Diebold. Then again, if Trump doubles down maybe by attacking individual female Democratic candidates with his usual style, he forces them to lash back angrily at him while their opponents can sit back demurely, ignore his shots and look weak. Plus Trump controls the media who are either futilely trying to shame him (LOL) or laughing along (Fox News?). It's great for ratings. Win/win. And so much more enjoyable for a reality T.V. self producer and strongman character actor.
knewman (Stillwater MN)
His speech should not be labeled "locker room talk" as you did. That implies that there are some all male venues where it is acceptable to talk about women in demeaning and disgusting language. Every time he uses this type of language, Republicans cringe, says "bad boy" and moves on. I keep hoping that the Republican party will live up to their values, but they continue to support this disgusting president. They are not the party of "family values" and they are not "fiscal conservatives". The sooner they are out of total power, the better off the country will be.
Njlatelifemom (Njregion)
Honestly, I am exhausted. As someone who never purchased the National Enquirer or its brethren, I made a conscious decision to just insulate myself from the miasma that sometimes passes for “celebrity” life. And now it is thrust at me by Donald, who really is, when all is said and done, just an elderly, degenerate, insult hurling creature—one of those old guys leering and ranting. I truly wish that this would no longer be covered by the media. It is no longer news. It is just crazy talk for most of us and meat for the MAGA maw. Can we just leave it on Twitter and stop giving him oxygen?
RLB (Kentucky)
We allow Trump to get by with such behavior because to a lessor degree, we are guilty of the same thing. Instead of becoming more enlightened with technological advances, we are now sliding into a second Dark Ages, using beliefs and bias instead of our inherent power to reason. In the near future, we will program the human mind in the computer, and this will be based on a "survival" algorithm. This will provide us with irrefutable proof of how we have tricked the mind with our ridiculous beliefs about just what is supposed to survive- producing minds now programmed de facto for destruction. When we understand this, we will begin the long trek back to reason and sanity. See RevolutionOfReason.com
Dan'o (Ponts Vedra, FL)
President Trump was elected by an overwhelming majority of the Electoral College, per the Constitution. He was not elected to be a politically correct choir boy. He was elected to stand up for America and he has done that very well.
Midwesterner (USA)
@Dan’o I was in England recently, and whenever Trump was mentioned people either had a look of disgust or burst out laughing. I’d like someone who “stands up for America” with more dignity. Also, I’m guessing you’re not in an area of Florida that was devastated by Michael. Those folks sure as heck don’t feel like he’s standing up for them.
Andreas (Atlanta, GA)
@Dan'o "Overwhelming majority" ... The outcome hinged on a few thousand votes in key districts, and the popular vote went clearly in a different direction. So I find it amusing that you would use this as justification. But as usual in the cult following, empty words and no arguments whatsoever.
Brad Blumenstock (St. Louis)
@Dan'o Actually, he and his followers have brought shame and disgrace on the entire country.
Ray (Seattle)
What does it say about DJT’s taste in women when he himself patronized the services of “Ms. Horseface” and paid her to keep quiet? Then again, with DJT it’s all about projection, i.e. I’m talking about my own inadequacies.
Mary Ann Donahue (NYS)
"When he attacks women, as he did with Ms. Clifford in his tweet on Tuesday, Mr. Trump often goes after their faces." Has he looked in the mirror lately? Not a pretty sight!
Wayne (Brooklyn, New York)
@Mary Ann Donahue Last I heard he had all mirrors removed from the White House. :)
Douglas Fischer (Bozeman, Mont.)
Here's what I'd love to see: Every woman and girl in this nation take a knee during the national anthem. Why are we standing idle to this mean, dehumanizing behavior? Calling it "adolescent" does injustice to my teen-age son, who values equality and respect.
MBL (Delaware)
@Douglas Fischer I agree, and what I would really love to see is men taking a knee during the national anthem right next to them, in support of both women and their teenage sons.
Rocky (Maine)
@Douglas Fischer You have NO idea what your son values at this age. I doubt very much that teen age boys consider teen age girls their equals. Get Real Douglas!
Sonja (L.A.)
@Douglas Fischer Yes!
Peter Turner (Little Falls NY)
Meanwhile, people endure chaos and interminably long lines waiting for basic supplies in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael. Nice to see Trump has priorities in order. Come on Mr. Mueller!!!
APCook (Washington)
Lets move the dialog and vote to addressing healthcare, education, immigration control while eliminating the cruel child separation policy, growing a new economy and needed worker skills in advancing technologies such as clean energy and IT, and then there is combating the GOP's efforts to now reduce SS, Medicare, Medicaid to clean up the fiscal mess they created. Trump is Trump...time to move on, through and around him. Ignore him.
KJ (Tennessee)
@APCook American citizens are supposed to ignore their president? I'd say 'replace' is a better plan.
AdamStoler (Bronx NY)
All issues the GOP has no answers for. None VOTE
Opinionated READER (salt lake city)
@APCook This is actually a serious concern. Trump and the right wing successfully turned its base against the press, scientists, educators, minorities, and intellectuals. Once those groups become "the other," it's acceptable to take away their rights and other human dignities. Women in Iran went from being educated professional to being owned by their husbands in a generation. Extreme "christians" are no different than extreme "islamists" -- and watching the charade of Trump kneeling with the released evangelical Andrew Brunson terrifies me.
AmesNYC (NYC)
It's a joke. Look at the guy! Ugly inside and out.
Deborah McNulty (Houston, TX)
This headline is wrong. When the President insults women, he demeans himself—as the people who cheer, demean themselves.
Sharon (Los angeles)
@Deborah McNulty. Sadly, they do not see it that way...they now revel in their most base impulses, which have been unleashed by the most vile, amoral person on the planet.
libby wein (Beverly Hills, Ca)
@Deborah McNulty; More to the point, he demeans our country and its principles we profess to car about. How could we as nation have sunk this point?
Helen Rubinstein (Florida)
Has the man looked in the mirror recently? Either front or back?
Mary Ann Donahue (NYS)
@Helen Rubinstein ~ I wrote a similar comment before I read yours. Wish I had thought of "Either front or back?".
KJ (Tennessee)
@Helen Rubinstein Trump thinks he looks exactly like the image in Andy Thomas's painting. And he also thinks he was the smartest guy in the room.
JKile (White Haven, PA)
@Helen Rubinstein Both ends look the same.

It must be a slow day for news at the NYT when Trump makes a comment about a former porn star, current web cam personality and current guest at strip clubs, and is roundly criticized for his behavior while Stormy is held up as a model citizen. She is definitely cashing in on her much greater than 15 minutes of fame. The rest of the article is just recycled previous reported “news” dating back to 1992.
Rick (Louisville)
@Fair and Balanced He's making a comment about a woman he chose to have sex with while his wife was home taking care of his infant son, so who was the model citizen? The man is President of the United States now. He's doing as much to keep this alive as Stormy is.
JohnH (Boston area)
@Fair and Balanced She may not fit your "model citizen" image, but she's got a lot more wit and class than Mr. Trump.
David (Philadelphia)
@Fair and Balanced At least Stormy Daniels knows who she is, and how to do her job. Can't say the same for Trump.
Dave (Ocean, N.J.)
The irony is that a lot of Trump's base thinks that because he talks like the stereotype of a beer swizzling blue collar guy, that he's one of them, when he probably wouldn't waste 30 seconds hanging out with any of them individually unless they had a hot wife he could hit on. And for the record, I was in a few locker rooms over the years and, while there were frequently two or three guys that would talk trash about women and other groups, the majority of us looked at them as loud mouth idiots who never grew up.
Middlemurray (Toronto)
@Dave Well said.
Bob Swygert (Stockbridge, GA)
@Dave Nailed it Dave. Let's be honest. A lot of men, including myself, have been in locker rooms over the years. I have myself, I'm ashamed to admit, "trash talked" about women to other men. Looked at a few dirty pictures. But, like a lot of men, I grew up. I never, ever sexually assaulted/ verbally sexually harassed any woman in my entire life. I try to treat my wife, my daughter, my daughter-in-law, and all other women I work with, go to church with and encounter in daily life with decency, respect and love. I believe many men try to do the same. The "boys will be boys" loud mouth idiots like our President are a warped minority who need to be confronted, mentored/ stopped. They don't represent all of us guys and never have.
CLSW2000 (Dedham MA)
Take a look at the majority of females at Trump rallies. Do they honestly feel that he walks off that stage and is not mumbling to himself about their looks, their weight and their lack of class? Are they so divorced from reality that they think they are exempt from his contempt? What we desperately need is either an open mic moment or tapes where he expresses his feelings about the women supporters who are part of his base. These women hear his remarks and are in complete denial.
Michael (New Orleans)
@CLSW2000 We've already HAD that open-mike moment... on the Access Hollywood tape... and just look where is has gotten him! Totally baffling!!
jw (Boston)
Simply stated: he's a bully.
Richard Winkler (Miller Place, New York)
To Debbie Walsh at Rutgers: There is nothing "appealing to white men over 60" about Trump calling Stephanie Clifford horse face. PLEEZE: sometimes we have to cool-it by making assumptions about what people think because of their identities without appropriate data. I think this is called "stereotyping". I recently became a Democrat, but I must say that the party faithful don't seem to know how to win elections. It's not acceptable to throw any group of people under the bus due to their race or gender. It's kind of stupid. Go back and listen to Hillary's stump speech and then ask yourselves why she lost Ohio, Michigan etc etc. Don't confuse the Koch brothers with every white male that may not seem things through your lenses. Thank you.
Wayne (Brooklyn, New York)
@Richard Winkler She lost those states because some men and women in those states would never vote for a woman no matter how well-educated or qualified she is. Everyone knows Hillary is qualified and has a track record of accomplishments going back to when she was a young lawyer standing up for disabled kids who, in those days, could not go to school because of their disabilities. They had to stay home. What has Trump done for anybody? What has he done for his nation while a young man? What kind of volunteer work has he done to benefit his fellow Americans? I have not seen any of that on his resume. Yet one of the most ignorant man in America is now president of the United States.
Andreas (Atlanta, GA)
@Richard Winkler I don't think it's that simple. I would agree with the basis of your comment on generalizing, but you could make the same case about trump. He certainly threw plenty of groups under the bus - stereotyping is putting it mildly.
Bonnie (Madison)
PS. A more newsworthy article would investigate (scientifically) why his so-called “base” thinks this behavior is funny
Mark Holbrook (Wisconsin Rapids, WI)
We don’t need to waste good grant money on that subject. We already know the answer, it’s called “arrested development.”
AdamStoler (Bronx NY)
The sad fact is many hate themselves. Nothing , I really mean nothing, makes them happy. They share that trait with the 1%. Projecting onto others is a simple way to avoid responsibility for one’s own happiness. Happens all day long. Pathetic and pathological.
Cornflower Rhys (Washington, DC)
Our president is no gentleman. He's not even an adult.
Paul (Brooklyn)
Demagogues like Trump are tough to dislodge. The way you do it is by calling them out for what they are but don't get down in the gutter with them. Offer his voters an alternate and point out where he is failing their voters like with corporate welfare, trying to kill ACA, Wall Street running wild, our reputation around the world in ruins, trade war disasters coming up etc. etc.
Middlemurray (Toronto)
@Paul Agree. Turning on a light makes the cockroaches run for cover. Free press and the actual facts have to be the light Fighting for the lowest common denominator leaves the winner at the lowest point, not the best.
Jcav55 (northeast)
@Paul His voters don’t give a whit about those issues. Many lack even basic comprehension of them.
Paul (Brooklyn)
@Jcav55-basically agree but not all of them. The job at hand is to reach the Trump voter than can be reached. All Hillary had to do was to flip app. 80k votes total in three states and she would have been president but instead of following my advice she concentrated on identity obsessed east coast liberal politics, ie let Wall Street run wild, never met a war she didn't like or trade agreement.
J (Fender)
Justice can be served when he is convicted and sentenced to serve in a women’s prison.
Hypatia (Indianapolis, IN)
@J Seriously? That would be cruel and unusual punishment for the women in prison. Twitter needs to take away his account for his bullying tweets.
Disillusioned (NJ)
But astonishingly, notwithstanding everything that has taken place in the past year, many women still support him! My mother-in-law, who had two daughters, defended Kavanaugh while simultaneously stating that she believed the victim. She also will vote for Trump. While we need to decry the President's conduct and statement, there is a more important issue. We must educate women. Too many continue to accept the victim role.
Jackie (Missouri)
@Disillusioned The women who vote for Trump and accept his statements as they relate to women, either specifically or in general, already have subterranean self-esteem. They've been hearing the same sorts of debasing things from their fathers, their husbands, their husbands' friends and their co-workers for all of their lives, so they've either never come to question their validity because they've been so badly damaged, or they don't think that such negative judgments apply to them.
Karen K (Illinois)
@Disillusioned Have you had a discussion with her and asked her exactly why she supports Trump? I would really love to know what it is about this particular man that people will continue to support him, knowing full well he's a lowlife bully. I truly don't understand it.
Melda Page (Augusta Maine)
I have a fairly stupid sister-in-law who has a fairly important position in her local republican party. That gives her glory and that is all she is interested in.
416 (Ontario)
DJT demeans and belittles everyone around him, not just women. Recall: Ted Cruz, Bob Corker, Obama, Trudeau, Kim Jung Un, Xi, Schumer, Muller, and the list goes on. I'm no mental heath professional, but I believe it is a symptom of a fragile ego, that is, having to denegrate others in order to elevate one's self. Seems to be well known, or at least common observation, that DJT has a massive but fragile ego, so it should be no surprise. Does he save a certain acerbic level of vitriol for females? It would appear so. Its likely a sign he feels most threatened by women. Wonder why that would be......
Dac (Bangkok)
He should be impeached for low crimes and misdemeanors, high crimes is above this creatures stature.
Ellen R (Mt. Pleasant, SC)
“Horse face”? He has certainly taken Melania’s “Be Best” campaign to heart
JKile (White Haven, PA)
@Ellen R Yes, and Melania could certainly be the subject of such remarks if one was so inclined.
Blackmamba (Il)
@Ellen R Michelle Obama is stunning brown, smart, stacked and beautiful. Ivana, Marla and Melania are not. Be Worst!
Amy S (Houston)
Maybe this is another attempt to have us talking about his inane behavior rather than the budget deficit.
Jackie (Missouri)
@Amy S Or the Mueller investigation.
JillyD (Chicago area)
@Jackie or: the Khashoggi murder the internment camps for Latino children ignoring science as it relates to climate change (or anything else)
Kathy Derene (Madison, WI)
He's not that smart.
katherinekovach (sag harbor)
Don't count on female Trumpsters. Watch as they smile and cheer at his insults. Pathetic.
Swannie (Honolulu, HI)
Just another NY city rich kid jerk. I have had to try and work alongside dozens of them. They usually get fired for incompetence. Daddy and Mommy always spare the rod and spoil the child.
Larry M (Minnesota)
Above all else, Donald Trump is a traitor to decency.
KPH (Massachusetts)
Trump’s supporters, including his female supporters, love his misogyny. They laugh and cheer and egg him on. He knows this kind of attack actually improves his popularity among his supporters. He’s getting out the vote. The president may be a vengeful lowlife who’s unfit for the office but he knows his audience. Trump’s playbook is not at all sophisticated or nuanced. His goal since he descended the escalator in 2015 is to divide America, to fan the flames of racial and gender resentment. In this case or with Dr. Ford it’s gender resentment. With NFL players or Charlottesville its racial resentment. It’s all intentional and it always benefits Trump. Cruelty is the point! And his fans go wild. The N.Y. times and the rest of the legitimate media needs to stop amplifying trump’s message by reporting what he says and start reporting ONLY on what he and his administration are doing. There is so much damage that he and his administration are wreaking that you are not covering adequately. Family separations at the border anyone? Still happening! I know you think you need to report his words because he’s president and it’s news but you don’t. Not in trump’s case. This sort of reporting actually helped get him elected and will help get him re-elected. His supporters are not going to suddenly go, “hey wait a minute, maybe he’s not a nice guy” or “that’s inappropriate”! Please stop.
Judy (Nassau County NY)
@KPH Massachussets. To the Editor and Publisher: Take heed of what this writer is saying.
Tom (Upstate NY)
I think a lot of posters are missing the point. The right, in order to push an unpopular agenda, has dehumanized the opposition. Many GOP supporters would rather be dead than a Democrat. Why? Because Fox, Breitbart and various other outlets have told them so. In the collective narcissism of the right, where the Dunning-Kruger effect runs rampant, it is not about stronger arguments, it is about us versus "them". Fear and anger separate and sort victims from those who would appear to cause "us" existential harm. To feel superior in the absence of making one's case, one has to degrade the "others". "They" are conspiring. "They" are a mob. We are all victims. The right has lost all claim to both the high road and a superior world view. Politics has devolved into the highly personal instead with few personal standards. Those standards include civility and respect. What happens then, as insults take the place of policy, is not whether women, blacks, Hispanics or anyone else are insulted. It is acceptable if it is a "them" you cannot identify with, who are not quite human. In effect it is OK to demean those outside the tribe, as long as it is not done within the tribe. Apparently, that makes it perfectly acceptable. Like with teens, fear of ostracization from the group makes crudity even more acceptable. American politics has become a middle school lunch room with all the crudity, putdowns and cliques, and all the immaturity that goes with it.
Karen K (Illinois)
@Tom I taught middle school and often pulled lunch duty. You are insulting middle schoolers, most of whom are quite nice, respectful young people.
Lorem Ipsum (DFW, TX)
More specifically, a middle-school lunchroom run by a mean girl. Listen to his speeches. He can't stop whining. Read his tweets. He can't stop SHRIEKING. And in his heart, he knows it, too.Look at his photos. When he's seated, he's always making this heart sign with his fingers, and notice what it's framing.
Michael (New Orleans)
@Tom In marketing, it's a well known fact that if you really want to drive product/service adoption, there are several factors one can use. These include price, performance, aesthetics (color, taste, smell, etc.), quality, versatility, etc., but the biggest and by far, the most effective driver is FEAR. Offer a solution to something that really scares people, and you almost can't go wrong. Sales will likely soar, even if the product/service doesn't really help. People want to be protected from things that scare them. The GOP strategy all comes down to selling fear... from enemies, from immigrants, from anyone who doesn't look like us or speak our language, etc. This includes your relatives, coworkers, friends and neighbors. Divide, divide, divide! And the only answer is Vote, Vote, VOTE!
2observe2b (VA)
If a person starts a fight by attacking another person, they should not be surprised that the other person will fight back.
Ellen (over the rainbow)
When Trump insults people based upon looks or bodily function he is really projecting all his own insecurities onto them. 'Ugly inside and out' probably the most telling and in my own opinion accurate.
Linda (Michigan)
Those who continue to support trump despite his crass deplorable behavior arguing that “everyone does it” have no respect for themselves and certainly no respect or understanding of what a legitimate president should represent. Woman and especially those religious evangelical voters that applaud trump’s behavior are an embarrassment to themselves, their religion and the country. How much self loathing and disregard for morality and kindness must an individual have to continue to support trump?
drspock (New York)
So our national political dialogue has been reduced to adolescent lunchroom jokes? The president’s misogyny has no boundaries whatsoever but his GOP supporters simply see this as a messaging problem? Even Ms. Clifford was a “porn star” when her law suit began. Now that it’s been dismissed she’s fallen to the level of “porn actress.” At the heart of all this, including the Kavanaugh hearings, is misogyny-women hating at the deepest levels of society. Some will say that hate is too strong a term, especially for the party that espouses family values. But the GOP is also the party that has allowed the Violence Against Women Act to expire and so far the women who vote Republican still seem committed to both their party and their president. And through it all the GOP sees all this as simply too many tweets getting off message rather than evidence of the deep social oppression of women that has sparked the revolt against sexual discrimination and sexual misconduct that women deal with at home and at work every day.
orangecat (Valley Forge, PA)
Re-Stormy Daniels. Then I guess he must like equines a lot considering what happened there. A bullying low-life who never met a lie he couldn't tell.
Juanne (Windsor, ON)
I expect this kind of language from a spoiled 12 year old, not the President of the United States.
rosa (ca)
@Juanne If a 12-year-old talks like donald trump, he's not "spoiled" - he's ruined.
Melda Page (Augusta Maine)
and has been taught to be totally vulgar. What great parents.
Tom Cotner (Martha, OK)
If anyone would just notice, everything tRump says about anyone else, man or woman, is exactly what observant people see in him. So, every time he opens his mouth, I know full well he is describing himself. He must really, down deep, hate himself. Now THAT is sad!
Jackie (Missouri)
@Tom Cotner No, that is actually justified. He is not a nice person.
Tom Cotner (Martha, OK)
@Jackie Good point -- I totally agree -- but still think it is sad.
AMM (NY)
Small people make themselves feel big by putting others down. A tried and true method.
James (Waltham, MA)
Trump has painted himself into a corner once again. By his claim, he only has affairs with beautiful women. He does not deny his affair with Clifford, and yet he insults her appearance. His grandiosity disorder and his many lies prevent him from getting his own story straight. He cannot logically justify his rude insults about a woman that he paid for sex.
Ken Morris (Connecticut)
The President spouts ugly insults at all perceived enemies. He may reserve certain types of insults for enemies on the distaff side, but I suspect that his ugly insults are pretty well distributed between the two sexes. Does Trump respect women in general? Of course not. He doesn't respect people in general except for shameless toadies who serve his purposes one way or another. I bet he even respected Stormy Daniels, back when she was meeting his extramarital needs.
David (Philadelphia)
Has there ever been a stupider, more uncivilized or less capable occupant of the White House? To think this slob beat out all of the career politicians of the Republican Party in their geriatric race for the presidency demonstrates that voter suppression isn’t the cure for anything. Trump did not win this presidency, and every day he remains in office is a day that puts a smile on Vladimir Putin’s face.
°julia eden (garden state)
@David: robert mercer & familiy may be smiling, too.
lftash (Ill)
Why he demeans women? He is basically afraid of them, they are smarter than he. How many women are in the higher positions in his administration? He has a limited look at the world. There is life outside watching Fox News and tweeting. VOTE!
MLE53 (NJ)
I just heard Congresswoman Stefanik from N.Y. on CBS This Morning say that in her district women are more concerned with trump’s economic policies than with his disrespect of women. Vote Blue, we do not need Stefanik and other republicans like her in office. trump is a disgrace to the Office of the President. His only concern is trump. His election was due to Russian interference and a failed Electoral College. Money is no substitute for a thriving democracy. trump is choking the life out of America in his pursuit of profit.
shend (The Hub)
Just Trump reminding all women (and girls) that they are nothing more than a collection of body parts.
Nancy (Anywhere USA)
@shend Just a thought: Have you checked out any female magazines in the past 10 years. Ever see an ad for eye makeup, lip liner, mascara is a big one too..... Legs forever, thick long shiny hair. Pumped lips with shiny beautiful arrays of colors. I think other than DJT? Who elese is considering women as body parts?
atb (Chicago)
@shend What does that make him, then?!
Bonnie (Madison)
Ironically, he has got to be the dumbest and least attractive president in history. A BIG BABY. Why give him any press on his meanspirited truly childish comments? Why is this news or newsworthy?
Sam Rosenberg (Brooklyn, New York)
@Bonnie Have you ever seen a picture of Martin Van Buren? Just sayin...
Den Barn (Brussels)
Horseface? But you slept with her...
Pete (CT)
@Den Barn Great comment. I made a bumper sticker with it. Thanks.
Dominique (Branchville)
This poor excuse for a man pays off Ms. Clifford to keep her quiet about his affair with her and now he calls her "horseface." He attacks Elizabeth Warren after she calls his bluff, albeit she should not have come down to his level of antics, and Melania stands with him, smiling away. The two of them need to be sent packing.
James Lochrie (Ontario)
Trump demeans Stephanie Clifford (porn actress Stormy Daniels) by calling her "horseface", but lets keep in mind that by all accounts he made love to this woman in 2006 a few months after Melania gave birth to their son. In 2016, just prior to his election, he also paid Stormy $ 130,000 to keep quiet about the adultery.
Wilder (USA)
@James Lochrie: I doubt that he is capable of "making love" to anyone except himself. Whatever it was, it was not love-making.
kfm (US Virgin Islands)
When mocking Fiorina's face, he said, "She's a woman and I'm not supposed to say bad things, but..." Trumps has no inner locus of morality, it's all about outside pressures and what he is "supposed" to say and do- or not. The irony is that although he demonstrates a lack of compulsion about publicly violating norms of civility and decency, Trump's a total prisoner of the opinion of others. Fox TV and ratings rule his life. His constant, automatic insults are a reflection of his own insecurity. His ego is so without healthy foundation and internal resources, that he has to project any 'flaw' or vulnerability to criticism onto others. His bullying and need to align with bullies is his attempt to beat down the constant threat to sense of self. His ghostwriter for Art of the Deal said Trump had a need for attention so profound & little to offer, like a "black hole". He consistently demonstrates a need to suck women into that void. People of color. Any vulnerable person or group: the "uneducated" white men he says he "loves". His bombast is the equivalent of macho cars, huge speakers blasting, announcing the driver's insecurity. The irony is his supporter's caps announce that weakness they share with him, for he is truly "A weak man's idea of a strong man". Anti-trump candidates need to run ads that string together examples of Trump's fawning and insults, then assert a general core truth: Trump displays weakness not strength. Remove the linchpin of the Trumpian myth.
Real (Dallas)
Trump is the one who picked these people to associate with. We wouldn’t even know who Stormy Daniels or Michael Cohen we’re, if Trump hadn’t consorted with them for years. When he disparages these people, he is disparaging his own judgement.
Me (Earth)
How can we, how can the officials we elected to represent us tolerate this? We have definitely seen enough high crimes and misdemeanors to justify evoking the 25th.
KnownNonVictimt (Atlanta)
Blame the voters. His demeaning comments about women were well known BEFORE elections. The voters voted for him despite that. They can’t complain now.
Rose Mazzetti (VA)
I am not a supporter of Mr. Trump and I am not defending his middle school behavior. However, I don’t like the way you generalize. In fact, your assumption that all women should be offended because he has insulted a few people is a bit childish. I am not Hillary Clinton; I am not Stormy Daniels; I am not Elizabeth Warren. And I don’t speak for all women. Personally, I don’t feel offended by his remarks, though I find his insults of men and women rather vulgar.
Karen K (Illinois)
@Rose Mazzetti You find his insults vulgar, but not offensive? Yet, I'd imagine you find nothing difficult about supporting a vulgar person? Is this what our country has become?!? Surely, if you are a Republican, you can find someone with a less vulgar personality to represent your views in Washington?
Awake (New England)
It is nice to see some people still have class, in this case it seems to be in the adult entertainment industry. Currently the people in the white house are obscene.
Jill (Minnesota)
Have you noticed how Trump’s insults, which are false against the people to whom he is referring, are always true about him?
dbrum990 (West Pea, WV)
Cut the generalizations. Trump doesn't "demean women." He demeans only women who demean him first.
Middlemurray (Toronto)
@dbrum990 Lets assume for the moment the order of attack is as you noted. It still leaves us with a sitting President hurling very un-presidential comments in public via 3rd party to media on an adult entertainment star that he slept with months after his wife gave birth to their son and then during the elections paid her off $130M to stay quiet and then lied about it on tape - repeatedly. If the defence is"yeah but she said it first", then the agument is on pretty weak ground.
Brad Blumenstock (St. Louis)
@dbrum990 Actually, he demeaned himself long before anyone else had a chance.
George (NYC)
By liberal standards, Stormy Daniels can make any comment she wants but Trump has to remain silent. The reality is life does not work that way. I cannot wait for her GoFundMe page to pop up! Let's see how many liberal empty their wallets to help her pay Trump's legal fees!
Jackie (Missouri)
@George Not a problem. I've got $20.00 already earmarked for her GoFundMe page. And, I bet, so do millions of other people.
David (Philadelphia)
@George The defamation case was the little one. Up next: the case involving whether Stormy's $130,000 hush money payoff was enforceable, or a campaign contribution--or taxable. And once Trump's taxes are legally on the table, he's finished.
Mr Chang Shih An (Taiwan)
So where was the NYT when Sarah Sanders was being ridiculed and has much worse insults thrown at her with the MSM laughing at a dinner function. It's OK when it's done to Republicans or people who work fro Trump but not for others. We get it.
Mary (NYC)
Ridiculed for having smoky eye makeup? That is hardly the same.
Rick (Louisville)
@Mr Chang Shih An You're referring to the White House Correspondents Dinner. The insults go both ways there depending on who's in office. You don't get it at all. Stop trying to defend the indefensible. The man has been in office long enough. There is no excuse for this nonsense to continue.
Middlemurray (Toronto)
@Mr Chang Shih An Apples and oranges my friend. Sanders was attending a WH Correspondents Dinner. These events have become well known for biting and edgy humor aimed at the then current executive branch. Saunders has been a very public face to the current one, so was/is a natural target for such humor. Yes Humor. Jokes. Saturday Night Live does it every weekend. Check it out. DJT on the other hand is President. President. Head Executive of the US. So called "leader of the free world". Defender of Democracy. yada yada. To put context on this, he takes the time from his busy day running the world, negotiating critical trade arrangements, interest rate management, heath care, defense, debt, government revenues, mid term elections, Saudi and Iran politics, the Korea's, etc etc, he takes time from all those things to hurl insults publicly toward his former extramarital porn star girlfriend.... But we should be worried about a few jokes instead. Right. That’s the poster child definition of false equivalency. PS - The press did come to the defense of Sara after the WHCD. Even the liberal press thought it went a bit too far and quite clearly stated it.
Selena Coul (New York, NY)
Maya Angelou said it best “people tell you who they are in the first 15 minutes.” I’m paraphrasing, but you get the point. He tells you everything you need to know about him by the words he chooses to express himself.
GetReal18 (Culpeper Va)
For years, I have been amazed that some quite unattractive men think it is okay for them to remark negatively about women's looks. Trump is unattractive in every sense of word and I am ashamed of any woman who continues to support him.
Jackie (Missouri)
@GetReal18 Really, all that he needs to do is let his canned tan fade to a pasty and speckled white, quit replugging his hair to reveal his natural baldness and age spots, and start wearing age-appropriate glasses again, and he will look like most other 72 y.o. men. The fat already fills out the wrinkles.
susan (nyc)
Donald Trump - as always - keeping it classy. Pleaae note sarcasm. Question for Trump supporters - did he cross the line yet?
madama (nyc)
In Trump's world of unreality, there was "no collusion" between himself and Ms. Clifford, so he can mock her appearance without the illogic of his demeaning the looks of one of his sexual partners. We are truly in uncharted waters, folks, with a President whose behavior grows more loutish and peculiar by the day...
JosephineW (Rockville MD)
Sadly, I've become numb to these crazed tweets and illogical rants.
Scott (Suffern, NY)
That's the worst part. That you (and I and many others) have become numb. This behavior is the new normal.
Damian McColl (San Francisco)
yone who thought that the gravitas of being in the White House would cause atrump to moderate his speech now has their answer. There’s only one solution to this: in 2018 place the Democrats in charge of the House and Senate and in 2020 remove him from office.
Tim (United Kingdom)
Not that anyone has ever body-shamed DJT, mocked his appearance or applied cruel metaphors and similies to him. No excuse for him doing so, though.
e w (IL, elsewhere)
@Tim I loathe Trump, but I get irritated when people talk about his physical characteristics. We cannot engage in the same behavior we've condemned the minute before. Anyway, isn't there enough non-physical "stuff" such as his character and temperament to dislike without resorting to attacks on one's physical appearance? Do better, Democrats.
Frequent Flier (USA)
@Tim Ah, but in his case, he earned them.
EDC (Colorado)
@Tim This disrespect for women goes far beyond mocking his stupid hair.
Gwe (Ny )
Using the same standards as our esteemed President, I would like to offer an observation. I can’t help but notice that many of the monikers he uses towards these women could more aptly describe his own physical attributes. (Although rather than a horse, I find his facial features more consistent with swine). Seems only fair to mention as it speaks to his tendency to project his own foibles unto others. I feel if the Times found it fitting to publish the descriptors he uses, they will consider printing mine. After all, just as the descriptors advanced a view (the President demeans women) mine does as well: when Trump calls people fat, ugly, animal-like etc, he’s singling our descriptors that more aptly describe what he sees in the mirror. It fits with his tendency to project. Would love to know what psychologists would make of this....
Patrick alexander (Oregon)
But, all of this is just fine with his base, even the women. I never would have dreamed that there was such a large percentage of people who, think this way living in the US. That’s no longer just sad; it’s downright frightening.
mary (connecticut)
“Rudeness is the weak man's imitation of strength.” ― Eric Hoffer
Blackmamba (Il)
@mary Nonsense. There is nothing weak about Benjamin Netanyahu, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. And confusing and conflating what they do with rudeness aka bad manners is ignorant and naive.
vincentgaglione (NYC)
Women vote for him. They only affirm his disdain for them...and sadly for themselves!
AmesNYC (NYC)
@vincentgaglione SOME women voted for him. Not all. And don't forget your own gender, vincentgaglione. The women in their lives stand by their men — and their candidates.
Blackmamba (Il)
@vincentgaglione White women 54% voted for Trump. Black women 98% voted for Hillary.
Ed (Washington DC)
Honesty, decency, respect and kindness - this nation, and the entire world for that matter, could use a lot more of that. Hopefully the turnout among women voters will break records on November 6th.
Mr Chang Shih An (Taiwan)
@Ed The same women that laughed at the attacks on Sarah Sanders with far worse insults than horseface. Please let's get real... the Media and left wing hollywood have targeted Trump and women who work for him for since he ran for office. The amount of nasty commentary about Trump is never brought up.
Jac (Boca Raton)
His calling women names didn’t stop many of voting for him. Why would he stop? How many GOP Legislators denounce it?
PegmVA (Virginia)
“I’m president, you’re not”, DJT on 60 Minutes...the drunk at the end of the bar is more respectful of people than this maroon.
Tom (United States)
In a local state congressional race a female GOP candidate (and Trump cheerleader), has yard signs proclaiming “Women for Jane”. As I pass by the signs, I can’t help but think, “how cynical”.
Darrell (Charlotte, NC)
I am a Democrat and a charismatic Christian. I often had some of my more conservative friends ask how I could vote for a "baby-killer" in 2016. These anecdotes are why. I would not allow a man who talked this way in my house. Why should I vote to put him in the people's house?
sjs (Bridgeport, CT)
@Darrell In 2016, I actually heard people admit they wouldn't go into business with him or be his friend, but they would vote for him. The mind reels.
Pditty (Lexington)
someone please forward this statement to the dnc for the 2020 debates...hits the nail on the head for the red meat evangelicals.

It's a testament to white female self-loathing that a majority of white women--knowing much of this, which took place before the 2016 election--voted for Trump. We absorbed--from our parents, peers, and society--that we're lesser beings, and many of our institutions reinforce this. Trump taps into that primal level of thinking. Will this election show that we've had enough, that we seek to reclaim our power? Smash the patriarchy, indeed.
Stephen (NYC)
@e w It has been said by people who study higher consciousness, that women think of themselves as lesser beings than men. This is balanced by the reality that they are, in fact, superior beings to men. The aforementioned is worth thinking about, because it explains a lot about women who support Trump.
Paul Yates (Vancouver Canada)
It's not Trump's awful behavior (any more) as much as it is the behavior of women that support him. How is that possible? Why would any woman accept him calling any other woman, regardless of who she is, "Horseface"?
Helen (Massachusetts)
I grew up with a father and brother who filled our house with hate talk against women. My mother and sister went along with it. I did not go along with it, and I was always alone in my dissent. By having Trump bring this kind of hate talk out in the open, I am seeing that I am not the only one who despises it. But I understand that many people have grown up with it - and they don't see it as adolescent, instead it seems normal to them.
MLE53 (NJ)
@Paul Yates It is trump and the republicans in Congress who are the problem. trump should be out of office by now accept for the spineless, soulless McConnell and pals.
AmesNYC (NYC)
@Paul Yates If the men didn't support him, the women wouldn't go there on their own.
r. brown (Asheville, NC)
The mouth of Trump is revolting, a national disgrace. How any American can support this man is beyond me.
Blackmamba (Il)
@r. brown Mr. and Mrs. William Jefferson Clinton were both invited honored guests at the nuptials of Donald John Trump,Sr. and Melania Knavs. Chelsea and Ivanka are best buddies. Trump won the votes of 63 million Americans including 58% of white American voters.
TR (Switzerland)
What I still do not understand is how women have voted and continue to support Trump. It’s mind boggling.
CDW (Stockbridge, MI)
@TR Melania is working on this via her anti-bullying campaign!
AmesNYC (NYC)
@TR All women do not think alike. Surprise!
JB (Nashville)
@TR - Every woman in my wife's family except her voted for Trump and will do so again. They're all evangelicals so they will overlook anything in the hopes of overturning Roe v Wade and ending the utter fantasy of "Christian persecution." As evangelicals, they are taught -- and for some reason accept -- that their husbands are the head of the household and they are to be quiet and obey. If hubby says vote Trump, they'll do it.
