Steven Colbert could give a better speech and get even more laughs!
Young-Cheol Jeong (Seoul, Korea)
Korea has signed the Amendment to the FTA, which is nothing more than a good will gesture. Nonetheless, Trump still insists on alleged unfair sharing of defense expenses. US Forces in Korean peninsula is for the defense of US. Korea has borne a substantial part of the costs for their presence and recent relocation. Trump is demanding more like a crying baby. Execution of the Amendment was a wise negotiation strategy, it is doubtful.
ChrisQ (Switzerland)
The U.S. appears weak and stupid with this republican president. Its a fact, no matter which ideology, movement, or belief one believes in. Hope the republicans out there get the neutral message - from Switzerland!
Hugh Wudathunket (Blue Heaven)
"We are also standing up for the world.” You are? How? And why would you when you're whole credo boils down to Trumpian America vs. The World? The thing about irony is that someone needs to believe in what is being asserted. This is just meaningless rhetoric. Covfefe!
Edward Bash (Sarasota, FL)
The Declaration of Independence called for "a decent respect to the opinions of mankind." It is in the first paragraph but Trump never read that far.
JW (Colorado)
Trump speaks, the world laughs. It's so easy to destroy things. I guess that is why Trump is so good at it. I wish that we could package Trump, and his devout followers, and send them off the globe. They could create their own world, where they would: - Pray while shooting one another over minor disputes - Men would be men and women would be nervous - The sky and water would reek, but somebody in Trump World would make millions off of dirty energy - Citizens would be blessed with two jobs each, at least, to support the oligarchy - Arms dealers would make trillions - Forced prayer and forced births would be the norm - Hopefully no one would be allowed out, as well as in The rest of us on Earth could then go forward, to great things, while the squabbling, simple minded, self-centered theocracy of Trump World implodes.
Chris McClure (Springfield)
Dangerous words from POTUS about international institutions not having any legitimacy. It’s really a shame he speaks for us.
sandgk (Columbus, OH)
He's a Uniter! (And a divider!)
Ana (São Paulo)
Actually Brazil speaks first because the first GA president, Oswaldo Aranha, played an important role in the creation of Israel.
Nick (Brooklyn)
The world laughs at Trump - it would bring me great joy to see his balloon busted but unfortunately it's tethered to us all as well - thus, the world is laughing at us. His hopelessly delusional mind will likely only see more allies turned "traitor" and will continue to rub shoulders with despots, dictators deplorables.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Remember the good old days, when we had an intelligent, eloquent and yes, elegant President ??? Seems like decades ago. SAD. Vote in November.
Mat (Kerberos)
Where’s the bit when the audience laughed at his boast about achieving more than any other administration ever?
BTO (Somerset, MA)
I would like to thank the UN for giving Trump the greeting they gave him, we here in the United States know he's a laugh a minute, now thanks to you the rest of the world knows that too.
rocketship (new york city)
An important, yet mess of an organization.
freyda (ny)
A column cries out to be written explaining why this particular silliness spouted at this time and upon this world stage to be met with this laughter. One theory--refusing to pay for "social entitlements" at home and abroad covers the fact that the money that would have sponsored society-building programs has already gone to the rich, leaving a vast empty space in the cookie jar, something like a bald spot one tries in vain to cover as the wind blows away all pretense.
CK (Christchurch NZ)
If Iran doesn't want criticism of its nation then the hypocrites and psychopaths should stop writing, down with the USA, on the side of their military parade vehicles in Iran.
Vanessa (NYC)
I am so disgusted with this administration and the piece of trash leading it. Something needs to be done already because this is not funny anymore-it never was.
Alex Yuly (Tacoma)
Trump says that the leaders of Iran “do not respect their neighbors or borders or the sovereign rights of nations”.... To anyone with a basic understanding of Middle East history since the 20th century, this statement is a ludicrous farce coming from the U.S.A.
B.Sharp (Cinciknnati)
Who would believe in trump when he said in almost two years he has accomplishes so much no one in History of United States have ever done that. The crowd roared back in laughter.
Frank Jasko (Palm Springs, CA.)
Three to ten is an insufficiently robust signal and fails to satisfy the "blind" justice most women seek. Sadly Cosby will survive this brief interlude unrepentant in effect giving the finger to the system which he successfully outmaneuvered throughout his life. His wife is likely a co-conspirator. She's defiant in her defense of criminal behavior, still.
SridharC (New York)
Trump made a mockery of an institution( United Nations) which deserves what it got. It is corrupt, toothless and irrelevant in our present world. They have done nothing nor did they stop anything. I think we should move it out of NYC. That would save millions of dollars which we can use to provide to some of the Ebola rescue teams in Africa. Just imagine the cost of security for the past few days! That is enough to help with emerging crisis in Africa.
Clement (Toulouse)
@SridharC Hum, listening to the audience laughing at him, Trump made a mockery of the US, again.
ew (rochester, New York)
POTUS called out our enemies: Iran and Venezuela. what about those other enemies which have attacked democracies and their institutions....i.e., cyber attacks, poisoning and election meddling throughout the world including US. Specifically I refer to Russia, to name one. Why not mention them, Mr. Trump.
CK (Christchurch NZ)
Our PM talked to Trump about tariffs on NZ www.radionz.co.nz/news/political/367283/pm-has-brief-talk-on-tarrifs-wit... His speech was about promoting patriotism over globalism. You can have both and that's why our PM got voted in as our new PM, as in globalisation you have to compromise and see that other sovereign nations are also looking to protect their nation and retain their sovereignty from the tentacles of big business and pharmaceutical companies that put life saving drugs out of the reach of their citizens. This PM is looking out for NZ citizens. It's give and take in trade deals. Even Canada is looking elsewhere for global trade deals and is still in the TPP. This article was written on 21/2/18 and headline reads; 22 items suspended from original TPP deal www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id3&objectid=11999017 Another article written on 14/9/18 headline reads: Brian Fallow: US economy v NZ - why the winner isn't who you think www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12123896
Mixilplix (Santa Monica )
I've never been so ashamed of my nation and president in my lifetime.
Andrew (London)
Being laughed at after he repeated his ridiculous, unfounded claims about his amazing achievements compared to previous administrations in less than two years (it feels a lot more!), tells you all you need to know about the reputation the US had around the world. Being held in contempt by most other countries is not a position that the US is used to occupying. Thanks to Trump, the country has largely alienated its allies, abandoned its position as a champion of free trade and can no longer be credibly considered “Leader of the free world “. So yes, it’s fair to say that Trump has indeed accomplished much. Sadly what he has achieved has almost entirely destroyed the reputation of the US, trashed its former leadership position in so many areas. It will take years (decades) to recover from this, if indeed it is possible to do so - in another three years it may be too late.
Nancy G (MA)
I am so ashamed of this so-called president once again. What another sad day for America on the world stage...confusing foreign aid with loyalty oaths from countries (they must like and respect us); confusing Iran and North Korea (did no one tell him which one has nuclear weapons). And much like himself, he boasted that the United States is accountable to no one. I guess because everyone else is conning and ripping us off. Such a miserable little man.
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
Aren't Trump motels all over the world "globalization"?? Or is it like the tax cuts, just for the wealthy few??
Bob (Durham, NC)
In all of this, I see the hands of Steven Miller and John Bolton. The worst, sleaziest, most anti- everything people in the administration. Point to any of the worst policies and proposals, and I'm sure the evil twins are behind it.
Wes (Alabama)
"I am the greatest leader in the history of the strongest nation in the history of the world!" (uncontrollable laughter) "No, I'm supposed to be the one with the maniacal super villain laughter. Me! Me first."
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
America First is one thing. America Only is idiotic.
Njlatelifemom (NJregion)
Donald goes rogue. Unable to bear the whole world laughing AT him, he rants about Kavanaugh’s second accuser being inebriated. How presidential and elegant, our little Donald, smoothing his ruffled feathers at the expense of a woman. And what about Brett? He wasn’t treasurer of the 100 Keg Club in high school?!? Oh wait, what? I guess the 40 year old virgin will next claim he was a member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union?
Cruzio (Monterey)
Can someone please tell me why Ivanka Trump is seated at the table of International Dignitaries at the UN?
Blue in Green (Atlanta)
Trump was called out for his bluster and bragging. The world laughed at his ridiculousness. He will need to hold a rally in West Virginia ASAP, to heal his fragile ego.
BTO (Somerset, MA)
Every second of every minute Trump shows his ignorance of diplomacy. He's to stupid to have ever read a history book to learn that isolationism doesn't work and that you have to give respect to get respect. Our country is not stronger, safer or richer then when he took office. In fact it's just the opposite since he's taken up with the dictators of the world. We need to get out and make sure the midterms don't go in his direction.
Wait, what? (Milford N.H.)
There's nothing wrong with globalization, just not at the pace of corporate profits first, middle, and last as a primary objective.
W.A. Spitzer (Faywood, NM)
@Wait, what? There is not only nothing wrong with globalization, it is inevitable. How we deal with it will define us as a country.
Frank Jasko (Palm Springs, CA.)
Something tells me that were this an episode of the APPRENTICE, members of the UN acting as jurors would FIRE HIM as leader of any collective body of nations. They laughed AT HIM. Nuff said.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
Whoever it was who wrote this speech -- Stephen Miller, no doubt --forgot to say that when the Dow Jones average drops 5 thousand points in a month or two, it will be Obama's fault.
Larry Roth (Ravena, NY)
How long before Trump pulls us out of the UN I wonder? Trump prefers dealing with other countries one on one - because the US can bully them. That's what making the US military "bigger and better" is all about - he wants the biggest club he can swing to make his threats. Except for Russia, of course. Putin owns him.
Yac (Hamburg / Germany )
Once upon a time ... Potus really should get his fact right. It is just appalling to hear what he proclaims to be the truth. We have a word for that "fremdschämen" ... please look it up... Talking about Germany and the apparent energy dependence. The Nordstream 2 gas pipeline basically means that Germany will source up to 15% of its energy demand from Russia, while downsizing energy production from coal and nuclear power for environmental reasons. Meaning that 85% of energy needed is generated elsewhere. Germany could produce more energy if needed from coal or nuclear power at any given time. The dependency only exists in his head - and he is surprised that the leaders of this world are laughing about him. The fairy tails about trade surplus from Germany is yet another joke. Potus is only looking at traded goods but completely forgets about services and digital revenues generated on a global level (university 3rd semester econometrics class). Now if that is not comparing apples with pairs I don't know what is. I believe that the US is a great country that stood up for freedom and prosperity on a global level. However, it hurts to see what has happened under the current administration with so much good will destroyed in such a short period of time. Greetings from Hamburg / Germany
Norman Dupuis (Calgary, AB)
Socialism "brings misery to everyone"? That's news to the hundreds of millions of people who enjoy excellent standards of living all across the Northern Hemisphere, including Canada.
Anonymot (CT)
You can call Trump a fool, a clown, a bad joke, whatever, but he is a human being with an advanced case of dementia. Those who have chosen to be around him, like Bolton, Pompeo, Pence, etc. share that illness. What is worse than the unrealistic world these people live in, share, and want to impose on us is that most of the American Way is involved in their version with or against Trump. Dementia is about living in a world that isn't and believing it is. It leads to catatonia just as easily as it leads to killing and cannibalism. As an entire nation, we've been heading there for years. If you think that the Kavanaugh hearings aren't a symptom of it, you're wrong. But, readers here believe it's the Republicans who are wrong. In the real wold, #MeToo is a manifestation of the same thing. Judge & jury, Ronan and the Times have tilted so far forward that they have landed on their nose. There's no one left who's not a victim, a hater , a divider following a moral compass with no needle beyond the pointed finger. The world leaders laugh, because there's nothing else to do. There's no asylum for a nation. No cell will hold a country. No shrink can deal with the DNC, RNC, CIA, FBI, NSA, MIC, the entire catalog of agencies and departments who have swallowed the Deep State mindset and are vomiting it up all over us and the world It's no joke. It will end in the kind of auto-initiated wreck that neither the laughables nor the laughers have ever seen.
W.A. Spitzer (Faywood, NM)
"he declared that his administration “has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country,”.....Trump creates a moment of levity at the UN. Don't you just love to be represented by a narcissist. The guy is a total clown. The whole world is laughing at us and he still has a 38% approval rating. That 38% of our country can't recognize the obvious and still approve of his performance - that's the worst part.
Wolff (Arizona)
@W.A. Spitzer The reason America is so polarized is that we are split into two camps - Neoliberals/Globalists who are anti-Trump and Economic Rationalists for Trump who still believe Americans have their own nation. Which is correct? The one that prevails. All I can say at this point is that Our Founding Fathers propounded that, "Corruption means not putting your Country first." That makes Neoliberalism/Globalism corrupt by definition. So Trump's definition of Economic Rationalism, which is compatible with patriotism to country, is totally in-line with the original philosophy upon which America was founded. Why should We change our philosophy after 242 years of success and being currently the world's most powerful nation?
W.A. Spitzer (Faywood, NM)
@Wolff..."we are split into two camps - Neoliberals/Globalists who are anti-Trump and Economic Rationalists for Trump who still believe Americans have their own nation.".....Trump is a vulgar bigoted narcissist. We are split into two camps, those who want to be represented by a vulgar bigoted narcissist and those who do not.
GDeLuca (Boston, MA)
That's an excellent question @Wolff. There is an anarchist anti-U.S. government movement by a group of far left operatives (many of whom lurk in this comments section) to tear up the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights. Change is one think, but "resistance" and militant revolt is another. Positive change can only happen with respectful discourse that honors and explores the views of both sides. Anyone who actually listened to the president's speech, knows that he comprehensively addressed the state of geopolitical and global socio-economics, while offering peace and a spirit of unity going forward. But he made it clear the the United States can no longer allow itself to be taken advantage of, as has happened over the last 27 years. Realistically, globalism, if it can be achieved at all, isn't possible for nations unwilling to give up their customs, cultures and sovereignty. President Trump is clearly offering an interim approach, while anticipating that the world is entering a new phase of self discovery that can lead to the identification of common values and goals.
stu freeman (brooklyn)
How pathetic that America's Great White Dope would use the United Nations as a forum for his own capacious ego. Instead of tittering over his announcement that his administration has accomplished more than any other, the entire audience should have stood up and either turned their backs to him or exited the room. As for his assertion that all nations should follow America's example and take care of their own citizens without regard for globalization, does he really expect that this would be helpful to the U.S. economy? Wouldn't a "China First" policy and a "Britain First" policy ad infinitum create a world in which each nation ends up fending for itself and exposing its consumers to exorbitant price-manipulation from domestic CEOs?
C.L.S. (MA)
Trump the idiot again! Hint: Globalism and multilateralism is what will see the world safely into a long-term future, not nutsoid America First idiocy.
Philip W (Boston)
As expected, he embarrassed us again. His speech was awful, especially the gushy parts towards the end. His love for authoritarianism is evident. Something he will never attain here in the US. Now we need to see what Mr. Mueller has to say.
Barbara Herbst (Aurora, CO)
@Philip W Trump only embarrassed himself. The rest of the world stands with us in this moment and is hoping that we will be able to rid the world of this man.
Stop and Think (Buffalo, NY)
What a surprise! Trump continues to advocate for the abolition of the International Criminal Court. Is it fair to assume that he's not looking forward to the day when he's in the dock at The Hague for Crimes Against Humanity, namely crimes against children?
Mark (Ithaca NY)
'He said the United States had “racked up $13 billion in trade deficits” in the last two decades.' Is that what he actually said, or did he say trillion?
Jim McGrath (West Pittston Pennsylvania)
Donald Trump is completely egocentric. United Nations representatives should have stood up and left the General Assembly as soon as he began to speak. Decorum, diplomacy and civility are useless in dealing with him. If you want to send a message to Donald Trump ignore him. It is his Achilles' heel.
Veronica (NC)
Where is the headline, “World leaders laugh at the President of the United States”?
Brian (New York, NY)
Seeing Trump speak reminds me of the days when Hugo Chavez or Muammar Gaddafi would get up and say something outlandish and prompt snickers throughout the hall. Now, it's not a two-bit dictator drawing the laughs but the "president" of the United States.
yogaheals (woodstock, NY)
@Brian what do you mean? He IS a two-bit dictator....hard to believe in this day & age & in THIS our country...
Patrician (New York)
Trump has sure delivered on what he said during 2016 campaign. “The world is laughing at us.” Today, the representatives for all the countries in the world laughed at Trump’s assertion of no US administration ever having done as much as his. Everyone sees through his lies. Sees him as a joke. Sadly, they are laughing at all of us.
Suzanne Victor (Southampton, PA)
I have to admit, I did not watch much of the speech. I simply cannot stomach this man. But, I did hear Trump. Are a reference to human rights. My thought was we really have lost all moral authority. When you and your administration are responsible for separating families, who are you to even mention human rights?
Kathy Lollock (Santa Rosa, CA)
Well, one thing is certain when it comes to Trump: He never disappoints when it comes to making us look like bungling fools on the world stage. "Murmurs of laughter," it is noted. His response is not expecting that "reaction." This man is so out of touch with his own perverted reality. He is irredeemably lost in his haze of lies and untruths. Frankly put, this reader believes he has crossed the line from sanity to delusions of grandeur. No use in rebutting his absurd analyses of the US and those nations abroad. Our allies at the UN, as well as adversaries, know as well as thinking Americans, if there is still such a group, that this man is right up there with unhinged thugs and wanna-be dictators now and in the past. Shameful man, indeed. Now please excuse me as I continue my angst over Mueller/Rosenstein, the questionably ethical Kavanaugh and his complicit GOP Congress, refugee families still broken up and their "lost children," ad infinitum.
Cruzio (Monterey)
@Kathy Lollock And he still didn’t get it that the council members were laughing at him. “I didn’t expect that reaction,” he said.
David (Knoxville TN)
While not a fan of Mr. Trump saying we will only give aid to countries that respect us makes a lot of sense. I'm with him on this statement.
W.A. Spitzer (Faywood, NM)
@David....You need to think about what you wrote very carefully. Is that what you really believe? Do you demand respect before you provide aid or do you earn respect when provide aid?
Steve Kay (New York)
Trump's newest achievement is he made the world laugh. Unfortunately it was at us not with us.
GreedRulesUS (Santa Barbara)
“Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of Liberty.” ― Thomas Jefferson
William (Lexington, KY)
To: New York Times From: Concerned Citizen RE: Trump "Speech" It would be greatly appreciated if the Times would post the full transcript of the "speech" for readers to analyze for the non-sequiturs, self-adoration, contradictory statements, and xenophobic world perspective.
Peter (Syracuse)
Trump got laughed at. Not laughed with, laughed at. Even if his red hatted minions think he's making America great, the world has dialed in his number, and know he's a joke. Too bad he's such a dangerous joke.
Larry Roth (Ravena, NY)
The only thing more disturbing than watching Trump give this speech was watching the comments on line from Trump supporters who were eating it up. The rest of the world is laughing at us. But it's nervous laughter, because this man is working to bring it all crashing down just to prove he's in charge. In a bizarre way, it's like the scene captured musically by Randy Newman's "A wedding in Cherokee County" "Why must everybody laugh at my mighty sword?"
Hootin Annie (Planet Earth)
Dear World, please do not judge us by our 45th president who was elected only by 80,000 people in three states due to our antiquated Electoral College system (and certain interference by foreign powers...). Signed, US.
donald carlon (denver)
Wow , the members of the U.N. laughed in trumps face at his boast of he's the greatest / what an insult .
Susan Davis (West Palm Beach)
He's a laughingstock. Lies and threats delivered with the elan of a week old pork pie. SMH
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
Trump's juvenile Late-Night Talk Show Host schtick is always the same: the insecure bragging because he needs it to feel OK and the perverse pats on the backs of dictators he thinks he understands: "In less than 2 years, I have done more than anyone, ever, yadda yadda". You half expect the band to do one of those bee-boop bangs on the drums for emphasis for his gag and a commercial to be announced. 'I didnt expect that reaction" he says. He will have to figure out what people are really laughing at him for someday. On his own time.
Barb (USA)
Mr. Trump projects his own personal baggage onto our entire country. Namely, he perceives himself to be a perpetual victim (that's why he bullies) and that's the same framework in which he places our country (we're being victimized) and that's why he bullies other countries. He's unable to see the forest for the trees so to speak, so he deals with distortions of reality based on his own personal hang ups rather than reality itself. Victimization and being taken advantage of is the lense through which he sees everything. That's why global problems are worsened and not solvable. He also humiliates countries he believes are doing the victimizing ignoring the fact that a huge part of negotiation is face saving.
GreedRulesUS (Santa Barbara)
@Barb well said!
Steve Griffith (Oakland, CA)
At the U.N., Trump says, “We only give foreign aid to those who respect us.” Since Trump has rendered the United States the laughingstock of the world, he just cut our foreign aid budget to zero.
Midwest Moderate (Chicago)
Iran is a “corrupt dictatorship” responsible for “death and destruction” while NK’s Kim is praised? Very strange words which will strike the rest of the (informed) world ludicrous. Kim’s NK is a cruel dictatorship, terrible to its own people and neighbors. Also already nuclear armed, unlike Iran, and NK will never provide the fairly strong inspection protocol negotiated by the Obama Administration with Iran.
Midwest Moderate (Chicago)
One additional note, I do think it is good that President Trump is engaging with NK, but his 1+1=3 logic driven by his narcissism and loathing of Obama is hurting US interests. This logic is on full display when he rejects anything done by his predecessor.
Hugh Massengill (Eugene Oregon)
Talk about a low bar. He pretty much said that the world leaders don't matter, and are parasites that he will be stomping on, so their opinions just don't matter. He says the ICC, the International World Court, doesn't matter, so he doesn't have to follow any laws, that there is no such thing as a war crime. He used some of the same tag lines in his UN speech that he uses in his stump speeches, relegating those who disagree with him to the trash heap of history. So since he doesn't care about anyone, well, other than the wonderful leader of North Korea, then Trump cannot lose. America however, is losing day by day, disgusted European by disgusted Asian. We "elected" an incompetent ego ridden ignorant man to lead us, and now we are in wild disarray inside America, and our allies laugh at us. This is what happens when a company makes a mistake and installs a really bad CEO. But companies have Boards that have the responsibility of removing a CEO if needed. America is run by a Republican Board, utterly corrupt and incapable of fighting for us. Still, oddly enough, I felt worse when I listened to George W. Bush ramble on. I guess, in my old age, I am just getting used to greedy Republican jerks running our family into the ground. Maybe they are winning after all. Vote, Vote, Vote. Hugh Massengill, Eugene Oregon
JM (Western Massachusetts)
Murmurs of laughter? The President had to actually stop his speech due to the General Assembly’s united and loud laughter at this man’s ridiculous words. Watching this spectacle makes me cringe.
EWH (San Francisco)
Watching trump right now - I feel embarrassed by this guy. He does not represent the values most of us embrace. This lying, boasting bully represents the worst of America. His dead soul cannot be allowed to spread like a cancer in the U.S. and anywhere on earth. His kind will be left in the tar pits with the dinosaurs of the long past while the women, men and our diverse citizens take power from the thugs in this administration and within our Congress, especially the R's that have lied incessantly and stolen our treasure for their paymaster. The dishonesty, lying and trashing of trust is stunning. Get this guy off the stage and into the new digs he so deserves - the one with concrete walls and iron bars. We are witnessing a guy who was not elected by Americans, but by Russians and others who care nothing about America's future, instead their own power and pockets. This is a travesty.
MIKEinNYC (NYC)
Why is the illegal so-called "islamic republic of Iran" even allowed at the UN? It is ruled by unelected, illegitimate dictators in little 7th century costumes and headgear who overthrew the last government, (admittedly also an illegal government), by force and entrenched themselves for the last 40 years. They should be shunned and the Iranian people should be encouraged to throw them out. If Italy was taken over by the Mafia would anybody recognize the Mafia as Italy's legitimate government? I think not! Same thing here.
Llewis (N Cal)
@MIKEinNYC Maybe because the Iranian people elected their leader. Unlike the US where the antiquated electoral college allowed a clown to embarrass our country on the world stage.
Robert (Out West)
It prolly has something to do with the way we overthrew their government, the last time they ran really fair elections. But hey, good thing we don’t have guys like Mike Pence speaking for a fairly-strange belief system that’s seven centuries older in OUR government, eh?
MIKEinNYC (NYC)
@Llewis The Iranians got to chose as it's president from a slate of candidates set forth by the ayatola. You call that "elected"?
Brad (Oregon)
I am ashamed of my country to elect such an unstable narcissist. I think the world will need protection from his United States.
Chris Andersen (Charlottesville, VA)
This is really an annotation of trump’s UN speech? Could have fooled me.
Robert (Out West)
There’s only so much to be said about a performance of “I’m A Little Teacup.”
Will Rothfuss (Stroudsburg, Pa)
Trump's wooden teleprompter technique is pretty funny. He doesn't seem able to look away from it for even a few words lest he lose his place. He has to read slowly so when he mechanically shifts to another prompter he won't have a pause. It's like watching a slow motion ping pong match. Clearly he wishes it was a campaign rally.
KJS (Florida)
Trump talks and the world laughs at our clown president.
mark (phoenix)
Great speech by the President. Maybe one of the best ever delivered to an organization which needed to hear what he is saying.Of course, the Trump hating media will try to portray it as otherwise. But Americans who are not suffering from an advanced case of Trump Derangement Syndrome know he is saying what sorely needs to be said.
Robert (Out West)
For some reason, I am reminded that in the old Soviet Union’s hospitals, protesting against the lunatic government was considered an infallible symptom of paranoid schizophrenia.
Steve Griffith (Oakland, CA)
@mark That must be why everyone in the audience is laughing—both at Trump and at the mockery he’s making of America. He’s such the kidder!
RMW (New York, NY)
@mark First, you clearly haven't been paying attention, and second, you don't possess a portfolio of historical facts ready at your command. Also worth remembering, the NY Times is worlds apart from Fox News; please don't confuse the two.
Peeking Through the Fence (Vancouver)
I would love to be in the delegates’ coffee room as they snicker and guffaw, roll their eyes, and quietly reassure one another that their are still adults on the international stage.
NYTUser (-)
Oh boy, did anyone see the face of the Swedish delegates when he started railing against socialism saying it 'brings misery to everyone' - the irony couldn't be any better.
Steve Griffith (Oakland, CA)
At the UN, Trump says his administration has accomplished more than any other. Laughter ensues. This self-delusional, sociopathic narcissist bloviates about “making America great/hate again,” and the world is laughing at us. As Colin Powel said, Trump is a national disgrace and an international pariah. How embarrassing!
MIKEinNYC (NYC)
@Steve Griffith Are you talking about the same Colin Powell who lied to the UN about Iraq possessing WMD's and that Iraq was complicit in 9/11? That Colin Powell, General Credibility?
Sam (Massachusetts)
Great conclusion - defense of world's wide variety of nation states, acting in their own interests - to build a home for their people. He is right - the nation state (shared territory-language-culture) - and not empires, nor borderless utopias - has been the world's best soil for growing prosperous peaceful lives.
Christoph Henrici (Bruttisellen)
@Sam Absolutely agree, although not a friend of Trump and approach to that goal. They are many constructive ways to achieve this, i do not think that the current path USA is following is constructive and that it will be successful
Occupy Government (Oakland)
So Donald wants leaders to put their nation's interests first, but he also wants US foreign aid to go only to nations that support our interests. As for Donald's view of charity, we need only review his Trump Foundation for a good idea of his generosity. We are a very rich nation. We don't need other nations to help us financially. We need a leader with a heart.
Njlatelifemom (Njregion)
Oops, Donald thought he was at one of his own rallies and made one of his grandiose, fact free claims about his nonexistent achievements. Instead of cheering they laughed, because he was actually at the UN. Let the great world spin.

@Njlatelifemom Oh, how I love your remark. Thanks for making my day!
William Wallace (Barcelona)
On what basis does the USZ "allow" or "disallow" anything? Unilateralism based on might, not right. This makes the US the political equivalent of Iran or any other as it pursues its own dogmatic interests, including in religious matters. No moral authority. No leadership. No example to others, quite the contrary.
C Kim (Chicago)
In the opening seconds of Trump’s UN speech this morning after he had just declared his admin/presidency the most successful in US history, the audience laughed. He had to pause bc of the laughter and then he said “Well I did not expect that reaction, but that’s okay.” What an embarrassment he is.
Concerned Citizen (New York)
@C Kim This is the kind of President who tells a Hurricane Florence survivor to "have a good time." The world laughs and liberty weeps.

Streamed Pres. Moreno of Ecuador. He spoke eloquently about human development from childhood to adulthood. He spoke about the rights of persons with various disabilities. He spoke about the rights of the poor. He quoted from the United States Declaration of Independence. Thumbs up to whoever slotted him in before His Excellency Donald Trump. His Excellency just boasted about his administration's accomplishments. That got a laugh.
Barbara Snider (Huntington Beach, CA)
Trump will be his usual boorish embarrassment. His take on international relations will be, as usual, unrealistic and self-aggrandizing. Everyone, please write letters of apology after he talks so people around the world know there are some sane people in America. Thank you.
Cody Pope (New York, NY)
Trump thinks being late to UNGA makes him look big and strong. It actually just makes him look incompetent.
Kelly (Canada)
@Cody Pope He pulled the same silly,"look at me, the latecomer " caper in Canada at the G7 meeting. It did not make him look powerful. Rather, it looked as if he "really didn't care".
D.j.j.k. (south Delaware)
Trump and his culture of corruption should not even be allowed in the United Nations. He is against saving the climate from coal and oil use he is for women abuse to continue in America and around the world and he and his culture of corruption are ready to start a nuclear war with any one. With the GOP support of coal and oil in accelerated use I expect the north and south Carolina areas to be under water permanently by the end of a Trump second term. That scenario is what may have to happen to stop people from voting for these failures. If not we are in trouble . For Democracy to work you need to vote.
Nancy McNamara (New Jersey)
The driving force for passage of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is generally recognized to as having been Eleanor Roosevelt. She was chair of the U.N. Human Rights Commission and was the person who was most influential in pushing for passage. Don't see her mentioned here. Why is that? Just another woman who can be overlooked.
James F Traynor (Punta Gorda, FL)
@Nancy McNamara She will never be overlooked, as long as there are reasonably competent historians
