How very nice to see a jazz review again in the Times. Please keep up the good work.

Bootleg Series, Vol 6 is excellent. Recording quality is good and the playing is superb. Dont miss it!

Don't forget to check out the great Louis Armstrong rediscovered material (from his own private tapes) put together by Armstrong expert Ricky Riccardi and released by Dot Time Records -- it is fantastic.

I don’t think this material is ‘new’. The Davis/Coltrane and the standalone Coltrane album have been available on Spotify and Apple Music for quite a few months.

@Steve Thanks for that useful information.

Thanks for these suggestions. I'd be extra appreciative if the reviewers would also comment more on the technical quality of the recordings and production.

@E Premack Re: technical quality, the Coltrane CDs: The fidelity is excellent, even on high-end stereo equipment. It's in mono; no stereo tapes exist; but that's relatively minor. It's incredible these tapes survived so long in basically pristine condition.
As per liner notes, nobody knows why this session was not released in 1963. As Sonny Rollins says, "This is like finding a new room in the great pyramid."
It's worth paying extra for the deluxe set with alternate tracks; they're all gems.

Love this stuff! Keep it coming! Please?

So much great music, so little time.

I consider myself very fortunate to have seen John Coltrane with the Miles Davis Sextet at Birdland. I later saw him with his new group at the Jazz Gallery in West Village when they played for the first time in public in May 1962. It was the beginning of the Impulse years. I do not have the newly discovered works mentioned in this article, but I will get it.

@Tonjo This is a correction. The year I saw the new Coltrane group was May 1960 not 1962. The Impulse years refers to Impulse Records.
@Tonjo - Ah those were the days, my friend.
