Get ready Dems when you control the Congress & WH in 2020 to expand the SCOTUS to 11 seats and put 2 20th century thinkers on the court.
Also , I look forward to the next POTUS having a bonfire on the lawn of the WH to burn ALL of Trump`s executive orders. It should be declared a national holiday.
PS> Why are there ANY female Republicans ?
4
Of course enjoying all the attention Trump will wait until the last minute to decide. Then of course the last man discussing the pick with Trump will be the voice that he listens to.
He’s choosing from a prefabricated list from a far right organization outside of his administration. There is nothing presidential or executive about that process. Then he wants us to applaud his discernment and leadership, which amounts to taking 10 days to choose an appetizer from the 1950s style menu at Mar-a-Lago. No extra charge for the ptomaine.
2
after a weekend spent golfing at his private club in Bedminster
He who criticised Obama for playing too much golf. Why doesn't he stay in Washington and do some work? On second thought, let him play golf, at least he can't do harm then.
6
Is it necessary for the Times to play along with/foreground Mr Trump's 'tease' about the announcement?
5
absolutely right. why do you give more exposure to his antics. he's playing the media!
Interesting take on Trump's delay in making a choice. If this was Hillary or Obama, the headline would have read. "President delays SCOTUS choice---Determined to make the Right Pick" The NYT liberal slant is comically becoming more and more irrelevant and therefore ineffective.
As for Trump's choice, re-writing the Constitution is not SCOTUS job. It is the liberal judges who try to do a rewrite.
2
Your reality TV "democracy" is truly revolting.
5
The appropriate litmus test if any should be, are they 25-50 years ahead of their times, in their thinking. That should apply to Presidents as well; we see how that's worked out.(especially with this incumbent.)
1
PT must feel as though there's an advantage to the cliff-hanger effect he's generated. But for this observer there's a potential downside, the possibility he'll be seen as someone who dithers, hopping from one foot to the other, in coming to a decision. Either dithering or using an important matter to manipulate, the manipulable. Doubt many see him as Hamlet.
Sadly Groucho Marx is not an option.
Frankly, it doesn't matter who he nominates, heads on the left will explode regardless. Even if he nominated President Obama to the Court, everyone would freak out, that is the level we have sunk to.
2
Every name on the list has been vetted and approved by the extreme right... The only difference between these zealots is name, age, and sex. Otherwise, they're all rubber stamps for corporate interests and religious zealotry.
2
Ivanka OR Jared ??? I'm breathless with anticipation. And disgust.
2
Is there any real difference between those that passed the Heritage Foundation, KOCH, NRA (literally guns for everyone Hardiman), freedom for no one except rich white male selection process? I imagine the only difference that counts for Trump is which will be the most loyal to him when decisions affecting him come to the Supreme Court.
2
Who cares? The "pick" will not have anything to do with Trump's ability to understand anything about his office, and will be an Uber-conservative. This is not an episode of Celebrity Apprentice and I do not appreciate the over-saturated coverage by a press that jumps as a lap dog when Trump needs attention. I will NOT be tuning in but I'll be working to remove the GOP lackeys from power this November
4
"I'm very close to making a decision - SQUIRREL!!!"
3
Let's just ignore this reality show drama leading up to the Supreme Court announcement. Trump craves attention and knows how to captivate the gullible 40% of the population that will swallow any line he puts out. The media and the other 60% of us should just ignore his tweets and ploys.
3
Why didn't he look at Roy Moore. He thought he was good enough to be elected to the Senate and he was Supreme Court Justice for the State of Alabama twice.
Seriously a justice should be nominated based on their record which would eliminate Barrett since she doesn't have one. Since we have a president who I believe might border on illiterate why doesn't he a national vote like the other reality shows do.
2
Will the swimsuit competition be televised ???
3
Trump has done it again..have media focus on his big announcement so they dont talk about immigration and Pruitt.
4
. . . Or Flynn and Cohen flipping. . . lost babies . . . tariff job impacts . . .
Yes, the president's nominee for Supreme Court Justice is important and will effect our democracy for years. But Republicans own the House and Senate and there are a few Democrats in office in red states who are up for re-election and will be afraid to vote against a Trump nominee. At this point, we can only grit our teeth and vow to vote in the mid-terms.
Until the mid-terms, I for one will ignore the Supreme Court show Mr. Trump puts on because, put simply, there is nothing unexpected expected.
If Mr. Trump wants to make history in the ratings department, I suggest he televise or at least allow the media some access to his upcoming meeting with Vladimir Putin.
2
The Con Don is an egocentric maniac. "Look at me. Look at me. Look at me." Unfortunately the media laps it up and splashes every tweet and action across their pages/supposed news reports.
Of course the media owners are part of the Robber Baron cabal and they are making money hand over fist. It boggles the mind that they sit idly by as The Con Don and his money master brethren try to destroy OUR country.
No matter. Average people across America and around the world are starting to understand the danger OUR world is in with supposed "strong men" like The Con Don, Putin, Netanyahu, Erdogan, Sisi, Duerte, Steve Bannon, Brexit operatives and their money master brethren trying to destroy governments around the world. They are a bunch of inherited/stolen wealth/power demented greedsters.
WE THE PEOPLE are the only ones who can/will stop them and NOW is the time.
7
What a boring little thing Trump is. He is only interested in how big his ratings will be, he has literally no interest in how the nation will be affected by his choice.
11
In lieu of being sucked into yet another demeaning and ridiculous episode, Part 2, of the Fake President's "Judicial Celebrity Apprentice" pablum for his brainwashed base, are there any alternative Marx Brothers films showing on t.v. tonight? I'd rather laugh at their hugely entertaining and classic absurdities than willingly be manipulated by a raging narcissistic lout basking in the self-affirming glow of his.
17
Of course, if they're running "Duck Soup" Groucho's president of Freedonia might be hard to differentiate from our president. Both are venal fools whose main interests seem to be in money and young women and couldn't care less about the welfare of their people.
As Groucho sang upon his inauguration, "The last man nearly ruined this place, he didn't know what to do with it. If you think this country's bad off now, just wait till I get through with it." A Trumpian thought if there ever was one.
3
I’m looking forward to the the wild, end-of-the-world hysterics from the left after the SCOTUS Pick is announced.....
5
Judging by the present comments here it ought to be pretty funny.
Speaking of hysterics it's just end-of-the-US. But Trump doesn't need a new SCOTUS pick to do that as has been demonstrated.
1
Trump's showmanship is showing. He figures one more day with the media obsessing about "What's he gonna do? What's he gonna do>?" is one more day they're not talking about his crimes and misdemeanors.
6
Scenario:
‘Attention American citizens!’ ‘Attention American citizens! There will be a raffle for prize cheeseburgers just prior to picking the judge. Just bring your pass to the booth and register to win!’
‘If from Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico or Canada, you get automatic registration just for your names and signatures. And Yes! You win automatically! Collect your winnings by meeting with authorities (oops) raffle hosts under the big brown tent on the other side of the judges pavilion.’
2
Of course it's important which is why the Attention-Addict-in-Chief is making a prime time spectacle of the announcement. It's newsworthy, but changing the headline every few min (or even several times a day) is merely feeding the troll. Please get a grip and stop giving him everything he desires (headline after headline).
9
Once again, Donald Trump is putting us through manufactured drama with his Supreme Court pick in his ongoing reality show. He'll do anything to get his base pumped up and to have them glued to their televisions tonight. Previous Presidents have treated the announcement of their choice for a Supreme Court justice as an occasion requiring dignity whereas with DT it's all just a part of his low class act. If his mind is churning as much today as he claims about his choice, then he should delay it so that he can make a calmly reasoned decision but that would never happen with The Donald, where chronic sleaze is what truly defines him.
20
Everyone knows it's going to be an ultra-conservative far-right judicial activist who will rewrite the Constitution in Trump's image for the GOP. Why waste good reporters on the details?
8
Of course there will be no announcement until the TV show tonight. It’s all a show in DC, anyway. No substance.
5
Gosh. Isn't Hope Hicks available?
2
What a drama queen. Tacky is as tacky does.
11
This is some kind of ridiculous showmanship to create suspense. We're the laughingstock of the world with our reality show "government".
8
NY Times - why cover this the way you do - "down to last minute" -- the Paper is playing into the hype
7
The incessant reporting on this doesn't really matter until the nomination is made. That's when the real reporting should begin. Trump plays the media by throwing out small morsels and the response is as if its a feast. Stop already! Chasing the musings of what Trump might do adds nothing of value, but continues to make the public weary on unimportant issues and blurs the important ones ... a Trump goal. Instead, legitimate media needs to focus on real issues and use their energy there. Discovering the nominee's actual background, history, and qualifications is where the in-depth reporting must go. We and the Senators who will question him/her need to know that. It will make all the difference.
5
I'll read about Trump's Supreme Court pick in various newspapers. Yes, it's an important decision, but I refuse to have any part in Trump's reality show special on his second court pick. It is humiliating for the entire country to have Trump acting like Ryan Seacrest picking the best performer.
If CNN really wants to do the country a public service, cut your Trump coverage in half. Public anger is directly proportionate to the airtime this man receives. Report what is necessary.
10
This is a great way to run a reality show, and a terrible way to run a country. Instead of playing up the needless theatrics, I wish the media would just report what Trump actually does, not what he says he’s thinking about doing.
8
No matter who President Trump chooses for the vacant Supreme Court slot, that person will face the full wrath of Democrats, liberals and progressives. They will make the tar and feathering of Robert Bork by Ted Kennedy and the partisan Democrats look like a garden party. It will be a spectacle of wailing, gnashing of death, and predictions of the end of America as we know it. Some things never change, and one of them is the ability of Democrats to use doom and gloom to divide the country further and further.
2
Democrats brought this on themselves, the new tilt on the court towards conservatism.
What many people dislike about liberals is their hypocrisy and sanctimony. They claim to work for the rights of the oppressed, but fail to actually push for universal health care, for example.
And some of their efforts lead them to compromise constitutional freedoms which presumably make the US society free.
One of those issues is due process, which entitles the accused to a trial by his peers, the right to put on a defense, and to confront his accusers.
The MeToo movement has replaced this by accusations, followed by extensive news stories (the scandalous stories sell newspapers), the accused is publicly shamed, his career ruined, he is fired from the job, and often we don't even know the name of the accusers, to protect them from further harm, when harm has not actually been demonstrated.
The forced resignation of Al Franken and of UC Professor Francisco Ayala come to mind.
In some cases there are investigations, but they are behind closed doors.
Men have to ride in the elevators at work. Now they worry that if the elevator jolts and they bump into a woman they will be fired for sexual harassment.
It was the unfair treatment of Bill Cosby that caused me to vote for Trump. He is a disaster as president.
I support Roe versus Wade and now that may fall.
But liberals need to understand OUR CONSTITUTIONAL FREEDOMS ARE IMPORTANT,
Throwing men under the bus has consequences.
2
All this build up, all this excitement! Which jurist will get the red rose?
This charade sickens me, but TV Trump will get prime time coverage for this spectacle. How I wish that Trump would make a pronouncement and nobody covered it.
10
At the last minute Trump will decide to use up his last lifeline and call a friend.
3
Of course he'll wait till the last moments. He loves the attention, the child-man that he is.
1
Trump's so-called "deliberation" and statements emanating from the White House that he is "very close" to a decision is pure Trumpian showmanship.. He looks at this appointment as if it were a hiring game on The Apprentice or some other reality show.
The fact that the media play into his manufactured suspense is sickening.
There should be no visual coverage at 9 PM tonight. Just report his pick, comment and editorialize about it tomorrow and then move on.
Stop playing his game. That's how he got elected in the first place: the mainstream media gave him billions of dollars worth of free publicity. He plays you guys like a fiddle.
8
How exciting to to have the second-by-second live coverage for this big show with a completely predictable ending.
2
Elect a clown expect the circus.
Elect a reality TV host get entertained.
Oh the drama, the drama!
The American nightmare continued....
8
The nomination of the next Supreme Court Justice is truly "big news." That is why the NYT and all the other media are devoting so much coverage to this topic.
The problem is that no one really knows who President Trump's choice will be, so the media really have no choice but to wait and speculate until the decision is announced.
Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if Trump chose someone not on the supposedly "favored final four" list just to spite the media.
2
I will not be watching. If I want to see a clown worth watching I will watch "It" on HBO.
10
Mr. Trump has no expertise in running a government and so far has had very little input in legislative or economic decisions. At the same time, he has "a thing" about appearing to be lazy and doing nothing. So he keeps telling his base that he is "working hard" - something that George Bush, who also was doing nothing, used to say - on the selection of the new Supreme Court nominee and is getting close to a decision.
The fact is the selection is already made by the extreme right-wing groups and handed down to him. His only "contribution" is to announce the name on TV. But, since he views the presidency as a reality show, he wants to introduce as much hype and attract as many audience as possible; hence his TV prime time announcement and his game of constantly raising expectations to get "high ratings" for his show.
7
Can anyone tell me if there is any provision to remove a sitting justice of the Supreme Court? High crimes and misdemeanors? Moral turpitude? ( Does that even still exist today?) Any provisions in the Constitution for removal? Has any sitting justice ever been removed?
4
I can't wait to see the Democratic reaction when Trump gets to replace RBG.
6
Let's hope Trump has crawled back under his rock by that point, and that someone saner, smarter, and more stable - no, not Mike Pence - is in the White House to make that selection. We need RBG to hang in there for as long as possible.
1
I am not sure anymore whether the Constitution matters as the right will pick a right justice and the left a left justice. When the Constitution was written is was for all the justices to follow not where their leaning were. At this point I almost feel that the rules should change and the people of the Country should vote for a Justice for a period of time or else we will stay divided for as long as this country can survive.
6
All four nominees that are being considered by President Trump would make an outstanding Supreme Court justice. They are highly qualified and have excellent credentials. The Democrats will not like anyone of his picks which is to be expected. They will obviously put up a fight but in the end the nominee will be elected to the bench.
Whoever is chosen will follow the constitution as it was intended. They are all superb and anyone of them will be an asset to the Supreme Court. The question is which one will it be. We will probably be surprised as to the judge who is finally selected. May the best man or woman win.
6
This is such a sad statement from someone who doesn't understand the judicial process.
9
It's down to Torquemada and Judge Roy Bean. But first we'll all be treated to a stand-up monologue by Trump the Insult Comic President.
23
Very clever and sardonic historical "judicial" references/antecedents there! And the Insult Dog crack gave me the only laugh I've gotten out of this story. Thanks!
3
What we need is Judge Dredd.
Trump would have been nothing more than a bad memory decades ago.
1
Like the exquisite scold that he is, Donald Trump is milking his Supreme Court nomination for all it’s worth. In other years, other presidents—some more grounded in the gravitas of the permanency of his choice—a generational selection, at the very least—would approach the decision with at least a small amount of worry (“will this choice be confirmed”?) After many long hours spent in researching and interviewing the finalists, he would be sharply reminded that his name would be linked forever with the name soon to be made known to the world. Sort of like a pair of Siamese twins; the joining both permanent and indelible—for good or ill.
With this president, however, it’s all spectacle, a seedy, grubby, greasy show, in which one wishes to wash one’s hands afterwards. The name that this president announces tonight will tip the balance of the Roberts Court even more sharply to the right. This is either a reward for Republicans or their concomitant revenge upon a lethargic nation, weary of the rigors and boring responsibilities of citizenship.
When we cease to pay attention; when we relinquish our civic engagement to others, tonight’s newest nomination to our highest—but no longer impartial—tribunal is our reward. Citizenship is not easy; it requires study and thought seriousness—all attributes that are sneeringly absent from Donald Trump’s curriculum vitae.
If we end up ruing the choice, we should all remember this is the price of apathy and indifference. The Right never were.
24
It is interesting that the New York Times cautions you that "comments are moderated for civility".
Is this the only place in US that civility prevails? The Times has to realize that civility today is seen as a sign of weakness.
10
Civility as long as political correctness is observed. Look at the comment down the page about Trump being a "horror" and "I hate him".
I write mild, weak-tea satire of the many absurd leftist positions and most of them are not published, obviously because they clash with liberal dogma. I bet this comment is screened out.
1
What's your point? Should the Times not monitor comments for civility in order not to display "weakness"? Perhaps some (Trump, Republican enablers, "the base") see civility as a sign of weakness, but others in this country, not to mention the rest of the world, see it as a sign of competent adult behavior. I'd like to think that there are people that still find civility and the exercise of it to be worthwhile. If the Times' comment section is the only place where civility reigns supreme these days, then God help us.
1
Everything coming out of the WH about this is pure promotional hype. Attention is what drives Trump. I would ask the NYT to be more selective in its Trump reporting.
31
Love that headline. As if Trump has been spending his late-night hours poring (pouring?) over the credentials of numerous Supreme Court hopefuls.
I bet he hadn't heard of a single one of these people until recently, and probably can't remember half their names. But once again, his flunkies, all selected with more care that a Supreme Court justice who will be with us for decades, will applaud his genius.
And Trump will glow.
13
The list of candidates was developed over a year ago for the Gorsuch nomination. As much as we have to criticize about Trump, it it pretty clear he heard of all of these candidates at least a year ago.
Mr.Trump can make any occasion crass and demeaning. The choice of a Justice for the Supreme Court should be a sobering and thoughtful process.Instead, Mr.Trump is going on TV to announce his decision so the process is all about him- it is disgraceful that he views this choice like an episode of Celebrity Apprentice.Mr.Trump is the "destroyer in chief". He has angered ur allies and befriended the despots, all the while ripping apart the most cherished elements of our Constitutional government.
11
I wish the press, especially the most respected outlets such as the Times, would not cover and reinforce Trump's reality show approach to the presidency. I wish journalists would use more independent and professional judgement about news and nation instead of pursuing their own 'ratings' and clicks. This sort of coverage makes the Times part of the problem of Trump's toying with the nation and our democracy. Please stop abetting him.
39
I'll pick door number two.
-Trump
The man has no thought process, so all is just a guess. And his bankruptcies demonstrate that quite well.
9
I wish that what was behind this particular "door number two" was a gift card or something equally inane and harmless that game show losers are gifted in order to make their losses somewhat more palatable. (Does anyone remember that episode of "The Golden Girls" in which the girls appear on a game show, select a random door, and end up with a skillet and a lifetime supply of soup? Considering that Trump is an incompetent who eats nothing but fast food, having him thoughtlessly select a random door and find soup behind it would actually be beneficial: healthy for him, a big sigh of relief for the nation.)
But no: Trump will be just as careless when making this Supreme Court pick, the ultimate in "door number two" choices for him, as he has been in every other facet of his professional life. Unfortunately for this country, the ramifications from yet another thoughtless, shoot-from-the-hip action by Trump will remain with us for decades to come, impacting this country in ways that may well prove harmful to large swaths of the population. Not that it will matter to Trump: he'll eventually leave the White House and return to Trump Tower, where he'll count his ill-gotten gold while the rest of America suffers.
1
Ah yes, the Reality Show Presidency.....
Same old.
Trump is Trump, but it's McConnell who should be held responsible for all of this, and Gingrich before him. Those two should be harassed in every restaurant and public place. Trump should be basically ignored.
17
Trump has already made his decision and it will be the one that swore an oath of loyalty to him.
So what we have here is a man who has shown that he doesn't care about the environment, past national agreements, the economy, the nations health, and wants to promote fear and hatred against immigrants picking the next justice to sit on the Supreme Court.
Ain't America great?
6
Tune in at 9pm Eastern for another suspenseful episode of Celebrity Apprentice President: Supreme Court Nominee Survivor Edition.
Who will he pick? We'll see what happens!
What the heck will he do next? Nobody knows! Not even Trump!
15
This game show will thankfully end soon, but there won't be any surprises - if you guessed Caucasion and Christian, you'd be right.
15
Pardon the typo - caucasian.
1
Until the question of Russian interference is settled, how can any Presidential appointment be legitimate?
13
Because he is the duly elected President, according to the law of our Constitutional Republic, eh.
1
I will be shocked if the pageant winner in not " the girl ". And THAT is undoubtedly how HE refers to her. Why ?? It's a huuuuge , one digit salute to liberals. She's young, he wants to "date" her, and I'd bet every single penny I have that SHE believes her role on Earth is to overturn Roe v. Wade.. The perfect choice for his Evangelical Fans, the last bastion of his support. Wait for it. And VOTE in November. PLEASE.
19
I hope all the rest of the Thai boys are being rescued at the time of his announcement.
35
Trump is the absolute last person to pick a Supreme Court Justice, period.
The dog and pony show is a disgrace, I find it very hard to believe these "judges" go along with such a farce
20
Sean Hannity will tell him who to pick based on Fox ratings.
18
Can Justice Kennedy change his mind if he sees that Trump conned him with false promises about how he would seek a replacement?
Because that would be justice.
10
Of course knows.
If he devoted half the time he does on the TV drama of it to mastering the policy details of his real job, he'd make fewer avoidable mistakes.
8
He doesn't know by now? What's he going to do - flip a coin tonight at 8:55PM?
That's no way to select a Supreme Court justice.
16
Well, Obama didn't call Sonia Sotomayor to tell her she was his pick until the absolute very last minute - she didn't even know if she was supposed to get in the car and get to D.C. as she has said many times, and had worried at one point that he was going with someone else.
5
The wait is obviously just pretense, all for show; everyone knows Trump never spends more than five minutes thinking about decisions. Recall his claim that he will know if Kim Jong Un can be trusted within the first minute of meeting him?
Making that claim even more ridiculous (if that is possible!) is that they speak no common languages.
40
Yawn, this silly reality show is boring. Please just stop covering this man's constant need for attention.
60
I can't get over the comments complaining about an extra 12 hours for the announcement. Get a life people.
13
It sickens me to think this man has this responsibility. He is a horror. Yet I wonder about the democrats. Why aren't they screaming about President Obama being cheated out of his SCOTUS pick by Mitch McConnell, another piece of work. I see no way out of the mess that Trump is making. I hate him.
62
I'm sorry but I completely disagree. Trump is doing what the constitution dictates. He will appoint a conservative textualist justice because he is conservative. I strongly disagreed with Republicans when they blocked Garland, and I would strongly disagree if Democrats did. Two wrongs do not make a right.
Dems have to focus on the elections.
G said "I see no way out of the mess that Trump is making."
VOTE.
Vote to retire the Republicans in Congress who are failing to do their constitutional duty of oversight of the Executive Branch. The Republicans have demonstrated that they have no will and no desire to oversee anything. They simply rubber stamp whatever their DEAR LEADER Donnie wants.
Vote a straight Democratic ticket on November 6, 2018, top to bottom, federal, state and local.
Vote as if our democracy depends on it, because it does.
13
Unfortunately the Demarcates are not screaming any more about the hijacking of Obama's nominee because legally there was nothing to challenge.
The American people where robbed and Mitch McConnell didn't even need an alibi.
6
This Supreme Court seat seems like a lose-lose battle for Democrats. Unless the nominee is blatantly pro-life or Putin's son-in-law the Dems should probably let this fight go and get it over with before the election. Conservatives seem much more willing to get out the vote for a SC seat and it is already going to be a tough fight to win back the Senate.
3
“I’m very close to making a decision,” Mr. Trump said on Sunday afternoon as he boarded Air Force One to return to Washington after a weekend spent golfing at his private club in Bedminster, N.J., and soliciting opinions from dozens of people about what he should do.
Yeah, GOLFING. The really important presidential activity, right Donnie? Or is that tweeting? So unpredictable.
But making up your mind? Nah, that is hard work. Let's leave that for the last minute, so nobody can "spill the beans" on you.
Who gets the rose on this reality tv show, Donnie? The members of the CULT OF TRUMP want to know.
55
OR asking his GOLFING buddies who he should choose.
Yeah.
15
How often does Trump board Air Force One and fly off somewhere? Either to a Love-Me rally or to play golf. And how much is all this flying around for no reason that involves governing the nation costing the taxpayers?
Oh, but of course, Trump drama in the making. The king waits to the last minute, as he hopes everybody holds their breath for his final word. Then he expects the “court jesters” to make their bows.
26
Totally consistent with a low class "reality show" - keep the news cycle and go for ratings, not content!
It's all about "ME" from Trump's point of view, as is everything he does - what is most likely to keep the attention of his tiny "base" involved in this distraction and not in the very serious matters of treason and Russian collusion. Shiny objects with existential liabilities.
People too often choose to believe contrary to undeniable facts. Stupid and lethal.
25
Reality TV and pageantry are what this announcement will be about. What the president wants is the attention and pleasing his base. His Court choice will be made with them in mind and not the American people. Judicial philosophy and legal precedents are lost on a president who personally disdains the law and thinks that he is above the law.
Amy Coney Barrett would look long and hard at overturning legal abortions and her selection would infuriate Democrats. The and meanness of such a pick would delight the president and would be an added incentive to turn the screw even tighter to the right. McConnell may be worried about a lengthy confirmation process but this president doesn’t take advice or listen to anybody although Sean Hannity’s endorsement of Ms. Barrett may be the tipping point in her favor.
18
Quite frankly, it doesn't really matter who he picks. With a stolen seat, we will now have a majority conservative Supreme Court. Our only hope is that all the judges rule to protect and enforce the constitution, not vote according to their religious beliefs, the way designed.
27
RE: "the judges rule to protect and enforce the constitution, not vote according to their religious beliefs,"
Yeah, right.
But don't worry they will continue to define voting according to their "religious" beliefs AS enforcing the constitution.
1
Kavanaugh is an excellent judge, but his background as an assistant to Ken Starr during the Clinton impeachment period might make Trump too uncomfortable, given the current Muller investigation happening. Barrett only has less than one year as a COA judge; she really needs several more years of experience on the bench before considered. Sean Hannity, of course, supports her because she is a fire -breathing anti-abortion dragon, and he fires up the conservative base on his TV show by publicly supporting her. Barrett's legal background is, for now, too steeped in the intellectual realm, and she really has no practical experience as a judge. Hardiman, a highly recommended colleague of Trump's sister (a well thought of jurist in her own right) seems the safest bet, as a well balanced intellectual.
One can only pray that Ruth Bader Ginzburg enjoys continued good health, and stays on the Supreme Court into her nineties. Based on the superb documentary currently thrilling moviegoers nationally, that could (hopefully) become a reality.
4
