The Best Medicine

Depending on how the day was going, how nervous the person was about money, the pharmacist just making that joke, “I’m really sorry about this. You’re not gonna be happy,” could have sent some people's blood pressure spiking!!! Ever since a pharmacy co-payment was an unexpected $160 a few years ago, where on a previous health plan it was $10, i always ask over the phone on any new item or store, especially when out of town.

Why $.48… That’s almost twice as much… Oh well, for $1.50, I can get my 3 mo. supply at optum rex. But that’s for Met Forman, a blood sugar medication

Your story made me smile too, Jill. And it brought back a memory. These days, when we receive a rebate from a store such as Staples or Bed Bath & Beyond, it’s usually in the form of a plastic gift card, looking like a credit card. But it wasn’t all that long ago when rebate checks actually came in the mail in the form of a paper check. Ten or fifteen years ago, I received a rebate check, I think from Staples office supply, for one cent. Yes! One penny. (I don’t remember the details, or why the rebate was one cent, but I remember thinking that, even though they probably had to balance their books, the cost of the postage was more than the value of the check.) I took the check to my local bank to cash it. After I showed my ID to the teller, he looked at me and with a straight face, asked: “How would you like that—heads or tails?” As I said, Jill, your story brought a smile to my face. I hope my story did the same for you. :)

Every quarter I get a check from CVS for $.01. I don't know how to stop it!

Dean and Freddie - I look forward to your comments as much as the Diary itself. This latest one from Dean was hilarious!

Thanks, Sally Coffee Cup! I love the Diary as an escape (for a while) from the regular news. It often sparks some memories for me, and I always enjoy thinking about them and writing about them. Cheers from Dean in CT.

The pharmacist’s smile together with a cost less than a black-and-white cookie or a slice of New York’s delicious pizza should have been sufficient to keep your blood pressure well within the normal range Jill. I hope you thoroughly enjoyed your weekend in the city and that, if anything raised your blood pressure, it was the excitement of a great play or concert or the thrill of one of the city’s many breathtaking views.

Hi, Allen—I was going to thank you the other day for commenting about my comment about the George Washington Bridge. But when I went to do it, the comment section was already closed. I always enjoy your comments. When I read the Diary entry about the GWB and the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan, I was sure we’d hear from you. You have made delightful comments about growing up there. Cheers from Dean in CT.
