Finally, after a third of a century of 'yellow & fake' diplomatic talk, we are finally getting somewhere with these NK gangsters. Clear messages like 'my nuclear button is bigger and it works' did the trick. And now we have 'Solid response to my letter, thank you', to keep the free world desire rolling toward a permanent solution. Thank you President Trump !

"Trump says" is a zero on the veracity meter. What sentient being on this planet would believe his constant drivel?

After reading this illuminating article, particularly concerning the deep and wide background of the "tough as nails" nuclear envoy Kim Yong-chol, any expectation by the Trump Administration that North Korea will quickly and completely "denuclearize" is simply delusional. If that is the American position presented to Mr. Kim in New York, his stay there will indeed be very short and a waste of everyone's precious time. Unless Trump, et al are willing to pull back from the nonstarter "Libya model", and compromise, the reasonable likelihood of any future Summit is zero.

'It's on!' 'It's off!' 'It's on, again!' It's another Trump distraction. What witch hunt? Look at how great I'm going to be with North Korea... don't throw your neck out watching the goalposts being moved ever-further back. Next distraction, please.

what are the odds this guy defects?

I seriously doubt that Kim Yong-chol traveling to the United States to meet with the Secretary of State is sweating a Visa. His entry is handled but the people that just handle that stuff. More likely he is going to New York because A. Thats where the meeting will occur. or B. North Korea has a mission on 2nd avenue that can be used for private meetings and residence.

What do you do when your opponent feints and backs off? You move forward, into his defensive position.

A person from North Korea is coming here for the purpose of having the leaders of the U.S. and North Korea meet The purpose is to have a better situation there in the future. Better than we have today. All that your most popular comments(most recommended) have to say about this meeting is they don't trust Trump. Another popular comment tries to make the sister of Kim Jong-un seem like she is a Stormy Daniels porn star looking for money. Two of the most popular are not original and already getting stale. They solve nothing. Comparing Kim's sister to a porn star is untrue. Maybe the three individuals scheduled to meet here are not all that great. A few of your "most popular" comments also fit in the not so great category. They, in no way, help this real world problem. That they are "popular reader picks" says something about your readers. This is disappointing.

“Solid response to my letter.” OMG, this guy and his ego. Give it a rest. I hope Mr. Kim brought his own lunch. If there’s a White House dog, feed a little of anything they try to serve you to him first. If it doesn’t kill him, you might be OK.
Doremus Jessup (On the move)
Well the poor man have to meet with Trump? He'll want a hot shower after meeting him. He's a smarter man than you Trump, so don't make too much a fool of yourself.
Steven (NYC)
Great win Trump! Now your going to take a meeting with a flunky sent by the North Korean Dear Leader. Can you humiliate the US any more in service of your own sophomoric ego?

Keeping tack, the best I can regarding this summit all along something was amiss. Kim Jung Um denuclearizing was too far a stretch for me to buy into. Trump is being played by Kim and Moon. Kim wants a seat on the world stage and lifted sanctions. Moon wants regional security through economic links. He wants to build the "nine bridges" between S. K. and Russia for gas pipelines, seaports, electricity grids, etc. Kim will agree to slowly phase out his arsenal beginning with allowing inspectors in. This was tried before and always ended with the family regime violating the terms. DJT is leading this parade and really believes the summit will lead to a Nobel Peace Prize sitting on his desk. I don’t think so Donald. Kim will have his seat at the world's table with sanctions lifted and Moon will be revered for creating a stabile economy for Northeast Asia. Our leader is a fool.
Chris B (VA)
North Korea is playing games with United States! We must know that the only goal for Kim is stopping the sanction, the economy of North Korea is dying. On the other side, Kim does not want to denuclearize North Korea. That's his Safe Card. So, US has to make sure: - Denuclearization of North Korean is a MUST. NO denuclearization, NO summit - Sanction should be continued if no agreement reached

It is about time they meet up and talk serious. I hope to see some real positive outcomes and an end to tensions between the two.

North Korea is playing a very slick game. They have mastered the art of creating drama and mystery. This enables them to focus attention on themselves making it seem like what they are seeking is reasonable while Donald and company appear disorganized and befuddled. The appearance at the Olympic Games, the invitations to negotiations, blowing up buildings at their nuclear site and of course firing a host of missiles over Japan and into the Pacific are just a few of their acts of drama. They make the world look. Its all a facade for their own insecurity. But, it keeps them on center stage. When Trump cancelled the meeting NC was stunned. Now they are hustling to regain attention to themselves. Sooner or later NC will have to reveal what it really wants. So far all they want is attention. If they want real peace and de-nuclearization a trip by a high official to NYC will not be enough. More secret meeting drama will not cut it.

Unless DPRK gives clear-cut and iron-clad commitment to denuclearize, the summit shall most probably not happen. If the summit does not happen, tensions would accentuate and the fate of DPRK would depend on whether China decides to opt for polarization or permits further isolation of DPRK. Chinese probably prefer status quo of proxy play via DPRK to continue. But if unification becomes inevitable they would prefer denuclearization as the safe bet, particularly since market access to unified Korea would be a positive factor in their quest for becoming a developed nation. Such a win-win scenario for G-2 nations is the ideal scenario to move forward with Korean talks.
Chris (nowhere I can tell you)
Actually, higher ranking N. Koreans are in the US constantly, at the United Nations in New York. This is window dressing only.
Bryan (Washington)
It appears to me that Kim Jung Un is doing everything he can to set Mr. Trump up to look like a fool on the world stage. Mr. Kim is likely to pull out all stops to meet with Mr. Trump. That appears to be Mr. Kim's end-game goal. He is not going to denuclearize his country unless the US, South Korea and China all give Mr. Kim what he wants; a permanent seat on the world stage and protection for himself and his regime. Short of that, this appears to be an all-out offensive to sit across from the President of the United States and become a legend in his nation.

America would have a better chance of a successful summit with NK if we enlisted James Franco and Seth Rogen to reprise their roles from "The Interview".

As much as I dislike the President and his inconsistent messages, his on again off again meeting, these lower level talks between NK, SK, CH, and the U.S. may just bear fruit. If only Trump could shutdown his twittering long enough, something of substance may occur. Of course that's wishful thinking on my part. But one can hope.

"Kim Young Chol"? According to the article, the correct name and spelling is Kim Yong-chol. Our president can't even spell the man's name correctly. I guess he'll also call him Mr. Chol, following in the footsteps of Pompeo, who referred to Kim Jong-un as "Mr. Un." [hangs head in shame and dismay]
Brannon Perkison (Dallas, TX)
I just hope Kim Jong Un's "top aide" isn't his sister, as was the case at the Olympics. If she gets Trump alone in a room, she'll probably walk out of there with $130,000 in cash and a pledge from Trump to send North Korea hundreds of millions worth of American-made weapons.

With all these demagogues--North Korean, Chinese, and American--jockeying for position and power, it isn't likely that there will be an agreement that contributes in any way to peace in the region. Given Mr. Trump's inexperience, hawkish advisors, and selfish mean-spiritedness, a more likely result is something merely cosmetic diplomatically and greed-motivated. For example, For every 3 nukes that North Korea gives up, the U.S. will underwrite financing for the construction of one Trump Tower in North Korea. The more nukes destroyed, the more Trump towers constructed. The number of construction and infrastructure jobs alone would be significant. This would also boost to the North Korean economy bigly as it arrives heroically on the world stage and begins hosting Chinese business leaders, American kleptocrats, and Russian trolls. Mr. Trump's sycophants can then nominate him not only for the Nobel Peace Prize but for the Nobel Prize in Economics. And to the extent that Trump's tweetstorms are an integral part of the "negotiating" as well as the salesmanship to his base, maybe he can also garner the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Quandry (LI,NY)
The past is the past. That Kim is coming to the US to speak with Pompeo, who has been to Korea twice, speaks volumes. It is time to see if there can be an end to the Korean war, and any other decent outcome that may succeed in that part of the world!
Racer (Palo Alto)
I'll go out on a limb and say preparation is overrated and this summit will work fine as is, because we have two people with similar state of mind, maturity level, and qualification for the endeavor they are undertaking. There's going to be a kind of bond that's hard to achieve if one party is super sophisticated.
SR (Bronx, NY)
"At the time, Mr. Kim [Yong-chol] accused a South Korean diplomat of composing 90 percent of the language in the accord, it says, quoting him as saying, “This is your agreement, not our agreement.” KYc has loads of experience and can smell a rat or a swindle from miles away. We should probably be prepared for the Nobel Peace Prize Whiner[sic] to be steamrolled. "Solid response to my letter, thank you!" *rolls eyes*...make that DEFINITELY be prepared. "You're so vain..."

A survivor, big time. He will have a nice little Vacation, and Eat Donald's LUNCH. Just saying.

Maybe McDonald and Cousin Kim can go to lunch together!

I believe nothing coming from this White House.

It has come down to this: Anything that Donald J. Trump tweets is usually untrue, a lie, never happened, or just him spouting off. I simply don't believe anything our President says.
Htb (Los angeles)
On the table during the upcoming Trump-Kim meeting: Kim offers to denuclearize North Korea, and in return, Trump offers to cancel democracy in the United States.
R. Vasquez (New Mexico)
"Watch what we do, not what we say," could apply to both sides in this unfolding story.
