Love her in "Mum." And love that wonderful aside about Liam Neeson's co-stars!

She is terrific as Mary Tyrone
Roxanne McGuire (NYC)
And who can forget Ms. Manville's hilarious performance in "High Season" back in '87? A wonderful film, Pauline Kael actually gave Jackie Bisset a rave!

Ms. Manville has performed countless scenes magnificently none more so than her final scene with Jim Broadbent in Mike Leigh's "Topsy Turvy". The scene is a heartbreaking rendering of her character's disappointments and regret with a childless marriage and the range of emotions summoned by Ms. Manville are literally breathtaking.

I totally agree. "Topsy Turvy" was the first movie I saw her in, and that scene in her bedroom when (if I remember correctly) she is hoping her clueless husband will spend a little time with her before going off to his bedroom is a masterpiece of acting - achingly beautiful. "Heartbreaking" is the right word.

Yes!!! She was absolutely *spellbinding* in that scene; it knocked me sideways. I have never forgotten it. Jim Broadbent's reactions were brilliant, too. High time this magnificent actress is getting more notice.

I sure hope, if and when she gets an Oscar, she doesn't abandon the theater. She's a magnificent actress - I've seen her on stage. Too bad most people discount theater as legitimate compared to films and one is not generally recognized until one receives an Oscar.

Lesley Manville is definitely one of the greats, and I hope she gets all the acclaim she deserves.

Leslie Manville is a tremendously talented actress. She is superb in both River and Mum. I've been a fan since seeing her in an episode of Kavanaugh QC. Now I want to see her Mike Leigh films.

Thirty years ago, I saw Manville in an electrifying performance of Women beware Women, an 18th century Who’s Afriad of Virginia Woolf, in the Pit of the Barbican. The house was 50 seats. I’ve followed her work ever since. She’s amazing.

Fabulous actress. Always has been. Thank you for this piece.

I have seen Leslie Manville in Topsy Turvy, Mr. Turner and now Phantom Thread. She leaves a deep impression on this viewer no matter the role or film, and in Phantom Thread her relationship to her coddled, genius designer brother was absolutely fascinating. The Woodcock siblings' co-dependent relationship made a movie about the fashion design business into a psychological thriller and I can't imagine the movie without the brilliant contributions that Manville and Daniel Day Lewis brought to it, brilliantly abetted by Vicki Krieps as the interloper who upends their lives. This kind of movie acting is a rarity. I would love to see Ms. Manville in this 'Long Day's Journey..' but unfortunately cannot. But will always look forward to seeing her films.

She was great in Midsommer Murders. The retirement episode of the first Inspector Barnaby.

She's stunning in every sense of the word. Interesting that she raised her child alone and did her own cooking and mending while Gary Oldham and Daniel Day-Lewis had wives and assistants to take care of those 'menial' things while they engaged in their neurosis making character immersion. I'd much rather have a cup of tea with Ms. Manville.

ok, as long as you do not crunch the toast too much.

Ms Hess has omitted Ms Manville's best role, as Kitty, the ignored wife of W.S. Gilbert in "Topsy Turvey", another Mike Leigh film. Her role is small, like the character herself, in contrast to the massive, volcano-like character of her husband. He flirts with other women, she fantasizes about being loved by the man she adores. She steals the last half hour of the movie, and leaves the viewer thinking about her long afterward.

She was really wonderful as Villy Cazalet in the Masterpiece production of "The Cazalets" in 2001.

Looking forward to seeing her and (sigh) Jeremy Irons in LA soon.
Alexandra (NYC)
She was wrenchingly, achingly beautiful in Ghosts a few years back, also at BAM.
S Jones (Los Angeles)
I wonder what Ms Manville would make of the notion that she’s waiting for anything. She seems like the kind of actor who is, first and foremost, a worker. She is, and has been, doing her work over the years with great integrity, honesty and craft. I suspect she will continue to do so, in or out of the glare of fame.
Vicroria (Long Lek)
Well put..... Totally agree

Lesley Manville is a superb actress. I've admired her work since I saw her single short breathtaking scene as a social worker in the 1996 Mike Leigh film Secrets and Lies. Brenda Blethyn, Timothy Spall, Phyllis Logan, and Marianne Jean Baptiste were all powerful in Secrets and Lies, but when I think of the film I think first of the extraordinary Lesley Manville. When I read about The Phantom Thread, I wanted to see it so I could see the latest Manville work, and I was rewarded. Her star ascendant at 62 delights me.

She was heartbreaking as the needy friend in Another Year.
Robert E. Malchman (Brooklyn, NY)
I remember Ms. Manville from the wonderful performance as Kitty Gilbert in Topsy-Turvy. It was the proverbial small part, but played by a very big and talented actor, and it's stuck with me all these years. Glad to see she's getting the acclaim her talent deserves.
Nancy (Great Neck)
Wonderful, simply a wonderful actor. I can not stop thinking about her in roles whether she is immediately in a scene or, as I hope, about to appear.
pollyb1 (san francisco)
She is simply divine and utterly riveting in every role.
Amy Johnson (Brooklyn, NY)
Ms. Manville is magnificent in the somehow overlooked BBC six-episode series "River" (now on Netflix). It's a tiny, complex masterpiece, in part because of her superb performance.
Alan P (Maine)
"River" is one of the best series ever made for television. It's breathtaking - don't miss it.
Carole Sullivan (Albuquerque, NM)
Yes! I hope her time is here. She is a fine actress and, from your article, a fine woman. A true feminist does take care of herself. She seems to understand the folly of trying to live through a man, in her life and in her art.
JR (Providence, RI)
I've loved and admired Ms. Manville's work for many years. So gratifying that she's finally being profiled in the NY Times. It's well past time for that Oscar.
Demetroula (Cornwall, UK)
I've seen most of Lesley Manville's films, she's brilliant and convincing in every role. But having now seen "Phantom Thread" seven times, I can say that she's never been better than as Cyril. Her contribution to this phenomenal three-hander has surely made Paul Thomas Anderson's film a masterpiece.
Beth Berman (Oakland)
Terrific actress - kudos to her and this profile!
