Our class watched this video today and had a couple thoughts and questions: What kinds of industry or human activity may have impacted the habitat of the polar bears? Also, the film gave us the perspective of how humanity has effected the polar bears. However, what would the impact be on humans if the polar bears were gone?
This article drew attention to my eye, because of the image. The image that is shown next to the headline is two polar bears fighting. Being the reader, I want to know what they were fighting about. After, I glanced at the title, ¨Polar Bears of Hudson Bay¨, this sounded unusual to me, since Polar Bears live in the Arctic. The author suggested to watch the video. While watching I found that a mother bear and her cubs were traveling through the snow while people were photographing them. In between each of the polar bear clips, there was a landscape of a piece of land with little to no snow. While watching I was also interested by the clip where the polar bears are brawling. Some ideas that I took after watching this sorrowful film was that the Earth is constantly changing. With Global Warming, the temperature is slowly but constantly rising which is bad for the polar bears habitat. Polar bears can't adapt to other climates, because they belong in a snowy, cold areas. At the end of the film, the camera transitions to animal bones. I predict those are polar bear bones, because they are unable to survive in such harsh weather. In conclusion, this video interested me, because a large amount of wildlife can only survive in certain environments, and as the earth gets warmer, the more wildlife are endangered.
I found it interesting that this document was filmed in a sort nature documentary sort of way.I am actually surprised that this made it onto the New York Times film club.I thought it was cool to see the daily lives of the polar bear.I especially liked the seen where I saw the two polar bears fighting. It is also cool that such a story can be told without the use of words but just clips of polar bears. It is also interesting how you can see the remains of human influence either in the foreground or background as the polar bears live their lives. It was also interesting to see how people came to take pictures of the polar bears in their environment. There was a good amount of people who showed up.It did not seem as though the polar bear really cared though. Also there was a lot of planes and ships remain.
I thought this video was a very sad and emotional video. It shows what the everyday life of a polar bear and their cubs do. What really surprised me was when at the beginning the polar bear and cubs were walking over the snowy land to the next scene of a hungry, starving bear all by itself in a deserted wasteland. It really shows you the type of life they have to go through to sometimes. I think the majority of the problem has to do with humans and their trash and pollution. We need to stop polluting our world with trash that could possibly lead other species to extinction. If humans never polluted, most likely polar bears would live a much better life. What I did like about the film was that there was no dialogue so everyone has their own interpretation about the video.
Humans don't care for anyone or anything but themselves and their riches. All the things that we do to this world like throwing trash in waters and overly polluting waters and the atmosphere is done all through selflessness and a non-caring demeanor. It has been obvious that the Arctic was starting to melt for a while now and changes made to help this hasn't been done. Although this film didn't come with words, it was evident on what was trying to be implied. It would've been nice to learn some ways to help fix this problem or to help people better understand the harm being done.
Humans are a big reason for the problem with sustainability and why animals and nature are becoming endangered. We all need to take more care of our environment, including wild animals that share habitats. Animals are the reason we are living today, theoretically. Polar bears are becoming a minority due to human destruction. As population are increasing, we are expanding our land by chopping through forests and damaging an animals habitat. Animals are being preserved by research centers and zoos which cannot be the only option for their shelter. Humans view themselves as superior to all nature and we tend to forget about others. We keep some animals as pets and this could be another option as well. But, we, as human beings, have to be more sustainable by caring for our surroundings. The world would be a better place to live for both humans and animals and other creatures. Just Believe.
This film came as a surprise to me. It truly was something different from anything I had ever seen before on here. The complete silence was something that came unexpected, but it allowed you to focus more on what you were seeing and the topic at hand. Polar bears are majestic animals, and it saddens me to see the impact that humans have on animals like them. While I don't believe that the land is reserved for one specific species, I do wish to see more of a harmony between the creatures occupying the land. Humans need to be more considerate of the other animals living the next to them, but it seems as if every day we push them further away from their home. The last scene, of the polar bear being disturbed by a passing car really saddened me because it served as a reminder as to what we are doing to the natural habitat of these precious animals.
Polar bears of climate change is a 7 minute long film club that spends its time filming polar bears in their natural habitat with only natural sounds. But this film club also touches on the underlying themes of climate change and are present in this film club. The film club starts off with polar bears walking around a snow filled wasteland and then transitions to polar bears walking on grass with little to no snow, this part directly shows the effects of climate change on the environment and other animals and this is what this film club really touches on. As well the film club shows the beauty of polar bears in their natural environment being able to survive in such extreme environments, plus it shows how humans are encroaching upon the polar bears habitat as all the polar bears that were filmed were filmed near a human settlement and serves as a warning.
To me this entire video was pointless and more misrepresentative of animal to human interactions. I find that naturally the more intellectually capable of species are obviously going to take the most land area, have the most effect to the area in which the species inhabits and just naturally change the patterns of the animals themselves. Yes I believe things such as pollution and global warming are issues and there definitely should be steps to fixing it but showing a bunch of high school students polar bears walking around just seems rather pointless. Even then the apparent purpose of showing climate change just seems drowned by the sheer attempt, only making the most gullible of people believe the purpose. Really if people want to get the point across of global warming, pollution and all the other statistically proven facts that humans are negatively impacting the environment, they should be stating those said facts and maybe use videos such as these to build on the purpose. Really this film club showed nothing and I'm for setting attention to their purpose but they simply executed the presentation poorly.
This video was different from others, which I liked. This is because it had no sound you just watched the polar bears interact in their environment. This was also interesting to watch because I have never seen a video on polar bears, only pictures. With many other animals in mind, people are always said to be invading the animals habitats and destroying them, however, in this case, the polar bears seemed somewhat undisturbed by the photos being taken. This can mean that they were at a far enough distance from them, or because it is normal for them to see humans. In other parts of the video, it showed the polar bears being near industrial buildings, along with two of them fighting. I understand that it was all supposed to be connected to the environment in which they live, but I feel that some analog would have been helpful to get the sub-points and transitions across.
This film club, was quite different from any of the others since it's a film of a polar bear's daily life essentially. It has no commentary, and no music, just pure polar bears in their habitat. Except their habitat has been inhabited by humans. Humans took the polar bear's natural habitat and made it into their own by putting down their houses. They pushed the polar bears out into the "wilderness" where there are mother polar bears that have to fight hungry male polar bears. Those hungry male polar bears, might even become cannibals and eat the baby polar bears. However, that's natural in nature, and the risk of death is common. If anything, create an extensive natural park for these animals. It can include a natural water source, or just straight up move the bears on one side of the road and fence off the road. So then they can avoid to sleep in the middle of a road.
The images shown in this video were absolutely gorgeous. the way the water, wind, and snow moved in the different scenes was mesmerizing. The bears looked like they were just walking around normally but there was something sad about watching them walk around and not seeing anything around them but snow or a large building. That was one thing that definitely stood out to me. The amount of empty open space all around. Another thing that stood out to me was when the video showed a scene of what looked like a mother and her cubs walking by a bunch of photographers. At first, I didn't think there was anything weird about it but the camera shutter sound effect got annoying very quickly. I thought it was strange that the bears just ignored the people though but I guess if they see them enough they're used to it. One thing I didn't quite understand was why the video of the bears fighting was included. Overall I thought the video was gorgeous and could have a deep meaning and great effect on some people.
This Film Club is very unique than the rest, there's no dialogue, and it's completely focused on animals. This shows that words aren't needed to convey a message and just pure visuals can help convey one. This video highlights a concern that should be getting more attention than it already is, and that's human actions affecting environments, especially another living species. I feel like we as humans are too caught up in our world and want to fulfill our personal needs. Some of us are even selfish to each other and don't care about how other people feel. Seeing these creatures suffer from effects of our actions is sad, they didn't do anything wrong, so it's on us to make things right.
[Cont.] Also, I just wanted to comment on the excellent camera work done here, this must've been a super daunting task. Trying get as close as possible without interfering with whatever they are doing. There is a lot of hard work put into just using a camera and I feel like it should be more appreciated.
This film club is very different from any of the other film clubs, due to the lack of any verbal commentary throughout the entire video. Polar bears being near a rural town should not be surprising, especially in Canada, which is very far north. Just because people live in an area does not mean that they eliminate all wildlife in the area, meaning that humans are part of the ecosystem, so what is the big deal about polar bears being in a place where humans are. Humans do not live in seperate world, we live in the same world, and there are interactions between humans and animals, the only reason it does not happen often is because humans are much more intelligent than other animals, so we can control when we interact with animals and what animals they are. This interaction between polar bears and humans is interesting but not shocking at all.
This film club was not like others before; In this film club there was a lack of commentary and the fact of the matter is that there was no need for any commentary. This video can be interpreted in a few different ways but it will all lead to one single undeniable answer- There is an impact on the environment when humans get involved. You don't have to be intelligent to understand that there is a problem that is being portrayed throughout the film. The lack of commentary not only makes one ponder the reason for messing with the habitat of the polar bears and it also seems as if the Polar bears were fighting for territory because of the lack of space they had around them, not mentioning all the affects of global warming that were being shown throughout the video.
As polar bears start declining due to human population growth and global warming, the effect of this new and growing population has destroyed the polar bear habitat. I feel a need to start being aware if our surroundings and to further help the animals suffering due to induced global warming put into place by people unaware of how we unconsciously mistreat animals. As a result, the. Polar bears have become more isolated by the day and do not have the plentiful population that they once had.
It is very sad and heart wrenching how humans affect the cycle of nature. This video stood out to me because there were no words being said. The video was silent yes but that does not mean that the purpose of the video was pointless because it was not. Even though the video was recording polar bears I understood the whole videos meaning and they didn’t have to say a word. It is honestly quite sick how the habitat of the polar bears is being destroyed and they did nothing wrong. These places are their homes and it is being destroyed for no reason. There are so many endangered species and animals that we can help and just choose not to why is that ? Us as the people should take responsibility for what’s going on and how we can work to stop it from happening more than it already is. Yes, there are certain people that are taking action but the little handful that is, is not enough. We need more.
I would've liked if they talked and explained more on what was happening. The video was pointless; they could've just added pictures if anything. But looking at the situation it was odd because it's already crazy for wild bears to be walking around for example, in your backyard. For polar bears to be roaming the streets is crazy and I never thought that would've happened. I thought polar bears were in Antartica. I also thought about how wild bears attacked people and wondered if polar bears will do the same thing. This had happened because of climate change but, A question that I have is why is the climate changing? And how can we fixed the problem?
I enjoyed this film because it is a silent film, so there was no narrator to impact how you feel about it. It is purely up to your interpretation of it, and insures that there are no biases being placed on the viewer. I think this video is a good inside look on the real life effects of climate change on animals and how this actually changes the day to day lives of these organisms. I think Churchill is an amazing place to see what is actually happening in the world because of mankind’s reckless behavior; there are so many images of animals in nature after losing part of their natural habitat, but there aren’t many videos that document what actually occurs when habitats are lost. Being able to experience what that is like in person would be an incredible opportunity for anyone that would be able to accomplish it.
It's truly terrible the impact humans have on nature. In this film they didn't need to speak any words for people to understand what they are trying to convey. Everyone understands that they are trying to say we are destroying habitats where animals, like polar bears, live. We as humans have such a negative impact on this world we are destroying and killing so much for no reason. Which I can't speak for anyone else but I feel as though we need to take responsibility for what we have done to so many species. And I know there are going to be people that disagree with me saying that there's people that already have taken action but I think that everyone should be taking action.
I don't really understand the purpose of this video. There's no commentary and it's just filming some polar bears. Polar bears being near a remote town shouldn't be something that is seen as strange. Especially since this is located in Canada, the northern most part of the Americas. The climate of areas change and polar bears are able to live there. The people living in that area are not invading the land of the polar bears, you can clearly tell that there is not very much interaction with the polar bears besides the filming and taking pictures, and how there was a polar bear on a road. I don't understand the point of the slo-mo fight between the polar bears, I don't see what information I was supposed to get from it. People need to accept that humans are apart of ecosystems and it's not like we are in a completely separate world from other animals. We live in the same place, the only reason we would be seen apart is because we have gained much more intelligence than other animals and that is why we control the world. But because we control the world, people think we're a completely different entity from animals when we fit in with them naturally. I'm just confused as to why this film is set up as to show that the polar bears are such a surprise and invading our land and shouldn't be there, but also wants to pick up on how we're invading their land. It really just contradicts each other.
This documentary really stood out to me because it's not like the other ones we have seen in this documentary they don't talk or say anything they're just natural sound sadn they show you how the polar bear are in the arctic and the way they go with the flow. They show us how polar bears do them and how we are wanting to take places where they are and what they call home. How they look all sad on the pathways where people are wanting to take and it just shows us humans how we are getting rid of all this beauty and nature we have in our world.
It is very sad to see how humans impact on the natural environment that the polar bears need to thrive on. With the film not having any dialogue throughout just made it focus more on the significance of the polar bears lives being threatened by human developments. Humans are taking over the land that is home to many animals and just invade their space which does not benefit them. Global warming is another reason why these beautiful creatures are diminishing and how human impact is creating using a domino effect. The part of the video where the two polar bears are wrestling show the amount of strength and power these animals have and even though we should protect them, human civilization should not be close to them for there safety and ours. The earth is a forever changing home to all but some new developments are changing it for the worse like how the polar bears are losing ice caps and all of it is turning into water.
Something that stood out to me in this video was the fact that it was just a pure documentary with no commentary or dialogue. It stood out to me because all of the other film clubs that we have done all had dialogue and songs in it and this one has nothing but the sounds of nature and pictures being taken in the background. Something that surprised me was when the bears were walking on the ice in the beginning there seemed to be waves from the water but it didn't look to go over the ice it looked to be underneath it, taking it along with the current. I like this video because we get to see the polar bears in their natural habitat without being disturbed and hunted.
This film club is definitely unique from all the others seeing as no words are spoken throughout the entire video and it’s just focused on animals. I feel like it brings to attention human encroachment on polar bear’s habitats and how it’s affected them. The film shows shots of polar bears only hundreds of feet from industrial buildings and cars passing by the bears but they also show shots of them play fighting and seeming to be fine so it’s hard to tell what they’re trying to portray. It was definitely interesting to see the polar bears in their natural habitat and how they have adapted to the changes around them. The video only shows a small portion of how animals are being affected by humans everywhere and I think it’s very important that we do our best to protect animals all over the world whether it be in the Hudson Bay or the savannas of Africa.
These cinematic presentations of wildlife are some of the best film clubs there are, I remember seeing something similar a few weeks back with Icelandic residents and how they live their life. Silent but meaningful is probably the most accurate way I could possibly describe this film and the many others like it. What makes this specific film so meaningful is the portrayal of information without using words and rhetoric to advance the purpose. Instead, it uses videos and imagery to get its point through. The use of videography makes this film more credible than that of texts and spoken language, as all the information is completely provided with no flaw or bias presented, what you see is what you get. That way it is completely up to the viewer to interpret the meaning and message of the film.
It was very sad to see how skinny the bears were and what a poor life they live. I hate to see that humans caused such trouble for these bears. Their natural habitat needs to be better protected now in order to try and preserve this species. Besides global warming ruining some of the bears' habitats, the film simply showed their daily life. Polar bears normally live in harsh, cold conditions and in relative isolation, which can be understood from the fight. I was surprised by that fight scene which really displayed the power that these bears have, it was quite interesting to watch. The sound effects that were playing in the background of the video gave the film a horrifying tone, but a lot of what was being shown about how the bears live didn't quite match that feeling for me; for example, the parts where the bears were just resting or walking around. Polar bears are born to be adapted to that wild kind of life, just like most other wild animals. The part that tampers with the bears' life however is global warming.
First thing global warming is serious issue which most people should be doing anything to help to stop global warming. Second thing I think we should try everything in out power to try to help these creatures. But after watching this film it shows the grange and nature of these creatures in their natural habitat, because most people have seen polar bears at Zoos, but never in the wild. Also it shows how polar bears are not some dangerous wild animal that media depicts of them, this film shows that their fine if you don’t provoke theme.
The video explored the lifestyle of polar bears in their natural habitat. The film was very different from the previous films that we watched. The film portrayed the daily life of a polar bear, what they usually do and the setting of their home. Something that stood out to me during the film was then when the bones of a dead animal were shown when the polar bear walk walking through the area that was mostly filled with grass and less ice. In some way, this section is sending the message that climate change is harming the polar bears and their homes and that the polar bears are endangered species. Another thing that stood out to me during the film was the rare items that were shown throughout the film, for example, the plane and ship that were stuck in the ice. The film was peaceful and I enjoyed learning about the polar bear lifestyle.
First of all global warming is not real. Antarctica is actually growing in size. Nasa even says that the growth is outweighing the few thinning sheet. The video was peaceful but they were showing the polar bears on dirt/grass like it was evidence that there homes were being destroyed. There is literally land sections of antarctica that grow native plants there since the beginning of time. Adding too, during climategate, it was proven that scientists have been skewing the data about the climate for years. It is even proven that temperatures grow and rise during all time periods. For example, during 1000-1200 AD the temperature rose greatly then swiftly dropped during 1940-970 causing a cooling time. These climate swings have been happening forever and most flawed scientists happen to forget that. Finally, all this video shows is polar bears in their natural habitat. To me it just seems like a look in the lives of polar bears, an thats all.
Watching this film it reminded me of other films from previous months. I got this feeling due to the wheater and how it is a silent film, however, I believe this film is unique. This film portrays different moments in this polar bears life and allows me to interpret it in the way I see it. One moment that stood out to me was when the polar bear was fighting the other one. This stood out to me because I didn't see polar bears to be aggressive and I didn't understand the purpose of their battle. It surprised me to see at the end how both polar bears were able to sit right next to each other. In that moment of time, it stood out me how relatable my life is sometimes to this polar bear. I may have an argument with my friend which result in us fighting but in the end, we are still friends. The clip of the factory, in the beginning, challenged my understanding of the video but I believe it was to show how humans are adapting to polar bear's territory. From this film, I can take back the feeling of being free and responsible as this polar is taking care of himself and what I believe to be its family.
I really like this film as it is very different from the rest of the very unique as being more focused on Animals as polar bears. This very cool environment where polar bears live so close to a human settlement like this is amazing. With them being classified valuable with the population decreasing so that they have a place to live here to help the population boom. We need this for other animals so that they can also be saved and have a place of their own to survive in. This sets a good a precedent for other to places to provide places for animals as they arr just apart of the earth as we are. It feels good to take a break from all other film clubs for a simple one like this with just environmental issues. I just took a moment to admire this breathtaking space seeing how beautiful it is.
This film touches on an animal that's never really admired for its true habitat. I absolutely love this film for its simplicity. For polar bears to live so close and create a home for themselves in the small town of Churchill is so rare in nature. This is a prime example of how humans interact with the environment. I also love the fact that this film can convey the reader's attention in an instant. It has no purpose, yet it can build a plot as this short film continues. People for decades have been trying to keep the polar bear population from dropping, but it has never been resolved. Churchill can use its landscape and manpower to control the polar bear population and not risk any mass extinction of this beautiful species. Towns like these have the power to stop an extinction and even create a perfect landscape for a species to reside in. We have to take note of the possibilities so we can preserve such a magnificent species.
I really liked this film because there aren’t that many videos of polar bears in their natural habitats that you can find. There are plenty of pictures, but its cool to see the animals live and breathe. I also think it’s really cool that there are polar bears living in the same place as people. Considering that, the town did look very remote and very small in terms of population. I doubt that very many people live in such a cold place. However, I still think it would be fascinating to grow up in a place like Churchill and be used to seeing polar bears. What does concern me, though, is that this may become normal in more places if the bears migrate from their natural habitat in the Arctic because of climate change. Their population is already shrinking, and if we want to save them, towns like Churchill might become the norm. I hope that we can find a safe way to save these beautiful creatures.
