This is among the many, many reasons why regulations are needed. And enforced. Otherwise, you eat, you may die. Badly.

Ohhh: "Tiger Brands, the parent company of Enterprise Foods, did not respond to requests for comment." Not much to say, with almost 200 dead from listeriosis, as the product " , , , is often consumed in low-income communities and sold by street vendors, making distribution difficult to track." Which is why the CDC and FDA's mandatory reporting systems are so crucial to public health. (A well-deserved plug!)

Irradiation kills bacteria and makes food safe to eat. It only costs a few pennies per pound.

If only gamma irradiation sterilization were easily set up and safely monitored, with all fresh produce and prepared meats going through it, this would be a headline of the past.

Processed sandwich meat? No one should be eating that, never mind toddlers.

So say the elite and Wygu eaters,

Oh Karl, I'm a dirt farmer and quite concur with Lisa. Highly processed foods should be avoided, because over time they seem to be the foundation of some diseases, especially if they make up a high percentage of your diet. When has caring about your health labeled one an 'elite'. We need to be vigilant to uphold and improve our food safety regulations after learning about this very sad outcome.

Example #564321 of what lighter regulation, tracking, monitoring, inspection, and enforcement looks like people. Expect this and more in the U.S. with where Trump and the GOP would have us go...
Keevin (Cleveland)
I agree. I sometimes think the idea of de-regulating by republicans is to prevent population growth of those who cannot afford better.

classic: industrial food chain with a weak link, and a bacteria that is life at its most robust

This dog and I split a quarter of a pound of bologna this morning. Mixed it into scrambled eggs, with a little matzo on the side. I say split, but I felt the need to brush my teeth, and when I got back well.... Tiger Brands? Don't know that kind. We prefer Hebrew National. They answer to a Higher Authority.

Well, if the Trump program of eliminating safety and oversight capacities within the various US agencies charged with protecting public health, food and drugs continues, we can expect an expansion of these types of events with the US market as well. Thanks again Mr President for your efforts toward MAGA, Making America Gross Again.

Each of us has a brain. Some of us can read...news stories about food such as this one....some of us can understand when it is read to us on television. Please explain to me how President Trump controls what we think and what we decide to eat? I'm a Republican because I believe that individuals in our society can make their own decisions. Peace to you all on this very, very stormy day in LEX.

What makes Listeria so dangerous is it can replicate at refrigeration temperatures. So a little contamination can multiple over time and reach an inoculum that is infectious as time passes.

The world’s largest known listeria outbreak has spread throughout South Africa for 15 months, killing 189 people.... [ The time needed to identify the cause of the infections shows an intolerable absence of food safety regulations and checks in south Africa. Possibly now with the new South African government there will be a change in administrative standards, since service directed change has been and is sorely needed. ]
