What are you talking about?
I'm in Tahoe, we have 10 feet of snow?
Low snowpack.......pffff
Leave it to the NYT.....

"Why This Year’s Low Snowpack Doesn’t Indicate a Drought" The preceding headline is misleading and confusing. Almost the entire state is "abnormally dry". Snowpack is 34% of "normal". It is only the water storage at 106% that is the good news. Drought means it is not raining or snowing, not whether the pipes are dry. Stop confusing people. Look at the map if you want useful information.

The best thing for kids is to park them on the carpet in front of a TV with an iPad and the air conditioning on next to a fridge full of soda pop. Everybody knows that.
Drought conditions still exist in California and most other western states. Last year's rainfall was an anomaly and didn't prevent wild fires from devastating much of the state.
The water problem is, of course (but unmentioned), one of distribution and the persistence of the Monterrey Accords's [aka Monterrey Amendment] privileges. Until CA decides on the priorities of people vs. real estate/land owners, the water problem will persist regardless of rainfall for the next 10-15 years.
As for Sessions' claims of "succession"; it might be best for him to visit a map and see exactly where the CSA continues to lay claims to enforcing racial hierarchies. It certainly isn't CA; try ALA,, GEO ., MS. or NC. (But then again, his actions as ALA senator do clarify that, don't they?)

Can you provide a link to that accord? I couldn't find it on google. Thanks.
Californians have begun to refer to the lack of snow in the Sierras as a snow drought and it has serious consequences for people when the reservoirs don't fill to their potential. I'm thinking of people in the agriculture business. The other problem we are having is the hotter weather. There is a what is called the Browning. Large areas where trees are dying, or are already dead, now cover the state. This year's rain fall averages won't solve that issue either, I'm afraid.
80% of our water is used by industrial ag. Industrial ag is an exporter of water in the form of the products shipped out of state. The waste water they leave behind is highly polluted. They are the primary drivers of drought and ground water decimation.

While the article implies that our state’s water storage is in good shape, the fact is that California has neglected maintenance on its existing water infrastructure and has essentially given up on creation of new dams for environmental reasons.
The infrastructure we have was built when the population was about half of what it is today. Water conservation is a solution but limited in its potential to solve the long term problem so we may have to go to power-hungry and expensive desalinization for coastal cities (are we sure we want to decommission those nuke existing plants?).
And what’ll happen to all that tasty water the ‘greens’ in the Bay Area currently enjoy when a lawsuit eventually forces the drainage of the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in the Sierra Nevadas exposing a valley as beautiful as Yosemite?

There's really only one topic this year for CA water. What are farmers doing to regenerate the water table in the "good years" like last year and what are they doing in the not so good years? Since the farmers are Trump supporters and don't believe in global warming, when they run the aquifers to nothing, and we have dry years, what are there plans then?

Thanks for your coverage of the case involving Daniel Panico and Mona Kirk and their children.
The children and parents apparently lacked adequate housing. So far, I've seen no reports of abuse by the parents. They should be allowed to at least visit with their children while this is resolved.

You are doing a great job on California Today.

thanks so much for yr clarification. we were thinking it WAS a drought, but now we know better tx to NYT.

Our primary water supply comes from a lake that is near its all time low. Here along the central coast very little rain. People still water their yard, sidewalk and street, have lush green sprinkled lawns and are washing their cars with water running down street. Not seeing the water conservation. We continue to see huge, under construction apartment complexes spring up everywhere: more landscaping, toilets, car washes, etc. helping accelerate the depletion of a finite resource thanks to city councils that favor developers over long time residents. Just a different observation point than this article posts.

Waking up to find a 'California' section in my new digital subscription to the New York Times was such a happy, confident feeling that I made the right decision! 40 years ago, I was offered an internship at the Times but chose to move to Los Angeles. Journalism was my major, but Television paid better!! I am committed to keeping this institution alive, since it has come under attack by Donald Trump, a New Yorker!

Trump is appalling but it was Barack Obama’s administration that used the DoJ to go after journalists like James Rosen (and his family!) and Sharyl Atkisson for hard reporting. Trump merely criticizes through his brainless tweets.

Are you so partisan that all your decisions are made based purely on your biases?
