“New York Today” at night? Do you guys ever sleep?
Tune of “Tonight”
Tonight, tonight
Is not just every night.
Tonight we’re reading “New York Today”
Tonight, tonight
The city streets turn white
But we’re sure we will all be okay.
Today
The storm felt disappointing
But now more snow is falling.
Will we get home all right?
Now here online
This column helps us feel we’ll be fine.
Tonight!

Whenever I see a riff on a song by Freddie I know for sure that “something’s coming, something good.” Thanks for all the smiles Freddie.
Downstate folks, keep the comments coming. I have plenty of popcorn.

"New Yorkers were treated to the somewhat rare phenomenon, characterized by lighting and thunder during a snowstorm. It’s appears, we’re told, when cold air settles above warmer, moist air on the ground."
Well, there you have it - "warmer air on the ground" - apparently that is originating from Washington. If we could just get those folks from yapping incisively for even a day, that could be the real rare phenomenon in this equation.
Best of luck to all New Yorkers. Hope everyone remains safe.

I'd like to know what things are looking like further inland (particularly up in the Hudson Valley, big chunks of which are still without power and worse), but this looks like a big forecasting misfire for Manhattan. Halfway through the day it looked like they had really whiffed it, but now we've gotten a few inches; still, it isn't exactly the great blizzard of 1947 or anything. Or even a blizzard at all, although earlier it did look like it might have hit 1.5-2" per hour for an hour or two.
I will never be able to understand, however, all these businesses who close down over a perfectly routine snowstorm like this. Bravo to the City for not closing schools today, though; kudos to whoever was involved in making that decision. This is the Northeast—even though Manhattan is the mildest place in the Northeast in winter—so expect snow from November-March, for goodness' sake, and plan for it.

Anyone remember the scene in Jurassic Park when they tour the park the first time and there aren't any dinosaurs to see and Jeff Goldblum says "so just to be clear there will be actual dinosaurs on this dinosaur tour?" I feel like that now reading how this terrible, dangerous snowstorm is currently bashing nyc as I sit, here in nyc, watching the window, where there is not one flake of snow to be seen. "So just to be clear, there will be actual snow during this terrifying and dangerous snowstorm?"

IT'S VEXING GREEK TO ME
Greek names are a challenge for many of us,
Requiring labial expertise.
Did Pericles have diabetes
Or did Diabetes have pericles?

I feel like I"m in the middle of a sci fi movie, in which everyone's programming has been rewritten and memories wiped, except mine.
1. We never generally used the word 'Nor'easter" until now. This word was used in an old fashioned way in New England, but even then it was dated. Suddenly everyone is using it as though we've always been using it. It's like 'dossier.'
2. The last few years, snow has become a cause for panic and fear. To ramp up the fear, each snow event is given a special name. It's not just 'snow'--it's a Nor'easter. It's not just a blizzard or snowstorm--it's "Aiden." Or whatever.
3. Well in advance of actual snow, everything shuts down. It's like having my Jewish grandmother run the decisions. No, worse. My Jewish grandmother encouraged me to play outside and toughen up. Now all of a sudden everyone has to say, 'Stay safe.' "Stay warm.' And businesses are closed, schools are shut--even with literally a quarter inch of snow. Because it's a NOR'EASTER! If it has a name, it must be terrible I guess.
Is it about ratings & click-baits? Yes of course sometimes one must actually worry about the weather & take precautions. But even then (once this year I think) one used to do this without hysteria and fear. Not that long ago. Now all this fear whipped up cannot be good for our psyches. Is this the point?

Love this comment!
(But my family in Connecticut, back in the 1960s, certainly used the word "Nor'easter," and with trepidation. Stuff went flying.)
3
Out on eastern Long Island nor'easter is still the common term for the winter storms that usually come from the NE.
4
With all the real crises and things to fear in the world, maybe we could relax a bit about the weather. Spoken by one who lacked a Jewish grandmother, but who doesn't remember, through many winters, ever being cautioned to "stay safe" or "stay warm" until fairly recently.

From In The News, this really resonated: “This photo album presents you with an uncommon sight: an Orthodox Jewish community in vibrant color, and partying hard.”
Tune of "Party in the USA" (Miley Cyrus wholesome track, from before she started twerking)
Took in the sights, March one, Crown Heights
And the colors were wild and bright
All the people dressed in their vibrant best
Were they dancing all through the night?
So I ask, but don’t mean to pester
What’s the tale about that Queen Esther?
And the guy they’re all blamin’
Seems his name must be Haman
They tell me Esther’s story that could fill a
Book they’re calling a megillah
They repeat it in the morning light
She said “Haman, hey, come on”
Esther said “No way, come on”
Then they all said “Hey. come on!”
Then they threw their hands up,
They’re singing out loud, an unusual way to pray.
Groggers all shake, like yeah
Noshing this cake, like yeah
Yeah, they throw their hands up,
The colorful crowd, uninhibited as they say:
Hey, hey, Haman - we’re all partying on Purim Day!
Hey, hey, Haman - we’re here partying on Purim Day!

Stuck blocking pattern ("Greenland high") is sticking us with repeating northeasters. There may be a fourth one next week. As for making fun of victims, that's sick. Try this:

Here's a good article with pictures about this second northeaster in a week (after the biggest one 4th January).

[I meant to use this link in my previous note, sorry.]
Must say, it's a bit difficult to imagine this as a snow-day, or even the 'quiet before the storm', when we've already reached our high of 35 C degrees and it isn't even raining...
14
35 F, I assume. 35 C = 95 F. But I'm with you about the predictions, which seems inflated, it's all rain in Princeton.

"Is Cynthia Nixon, the “Sex and the City” star, considering a run for governor?"
Funny how the mind works based on frames of reference, or even reverence. The first report I'd heard asked "Will Miranda be running for Governor of New York?" I assumed it was Lin-Manuel Miranda, which sounded like a great idea fro Mayor or Governor actually, but would he really care to complete with Gov. Cuomo? (This "Miranda" story makes more sense, as someone wanting to make this challenge.)
12
In the hope of saving what is left of America, can we stop with this obsessive celebrity worship? No more actors in political office. Ever. Just stop it.

'The first report I'd heard asked "Will Miranda be running for Governor of New York?" I assumed it was Lin-Manuel Miranda.'
Carmen Miranda?
Ah, what I needed to add to my comment re Cynthia Nixon is that she accepted a part in a film that was all wrong. That was bad judgment and showed lack of due diligence.

I think it's too mild for a large accumulation

Re Cynthia Nixon's exploring a run for governor of New York:
Cynthia Nixon is a pretty good actress although I heartily disapproved of her portrayal of Emily Dickinson in that overwrought, historically inaccurate, unappetizing movie about her; Dickinson was anything but nasty or frustrated or friendless. Until the week she died, she was very much involved with all the people she loved, young and old, and they were select but numerous.
Ms. Nixon took a part in a movie that was a travesty. That was a bad call. I'd hate for her to make the same mistake and run for governor.
5
spoke to her this morning, she is a real person, forgot her metro card, had
to go back to get it. she rides the subway. does cuomo?
7
Yes, I'd imagined Ms. Nixon is a real person. And I agree with many things she says.
I don't like everything about Mr. Cuomo, but he has a way of getting at least some things done, like building a new, badly needed Tappan Zee Bridge (you'll never get me to call it by his father's name) and enabling gay couples to get married in New York State.
We might be due for a change in governor, but I still hope it's someone who can compromise and by doing so strong-arm upstate conservatives to get closer to the center -- as well as hold back our more muddle-headed progressives like Mr. de Blasio (and soon, perhaps, heaven help us, Jumaane Williams).
Moderation in all things isn't the worst maxim to live by.

Use up some of the climate warming that the Dems are screaming about.

Ba-dum-dum, cymbal.
1
No, it's you that is screaming. You're just ignoring the facts, and don't want to pay attention. Facts are facts and reality is reality. Killing the messenger doesn't work.
Climate is the trends of weather over time (decades) and space (whole planet). Here's what's in store if we go on:

By "dems", you must mean the 98% of scientists, not funded by a petrochemical company, who state that climate change is real and is being exacerbated by humanity.
