Fabulous.

Wow, Maxine remembered that retort for over 50 years.
Charles Rouse (California)
LOL. I'm with that girl.

On occasion I am told "you seem to understand". I smile and wait for my "train" to arrive.
Donna (NYC)
Oui, oui - moi aussi - je me souviens!!

If a large number of students were following along, that must have been a very good class. The administration of American schools has been incompetent forever. Students who do well are rewarded and told they are smart. Students who struggle are passed along until they drop out or graduate. Mastery learning and making subjects relevant to students are only given lip service. NYC spends $30,000 per student per year. A class of 33 students' share of spending is one million dollars a year. Yet, only half of our students graduate and most of those have only a mediocre education. And in reality, only students who enter speaking two languages graduate fluent in two languages.

Very funny story, Maxine. I laughed when I got to the punch line. The student was definitely a New Yorker. A student from, say, Nebraska or Wyoming probably would not have come up with anything like that, especially, as you said, "without missing a beat."
Billy from Brooklyn (Hudson Valley, NY)
Dean-- Let's see how long it takes you to receive a comment from a reader in the Plains states. Lol.
Dean (Connecticut)
You’re right, Billy. About 10 minutes after I posted my comment, it occurred to me that someone from the Midwest might be offended. I certainly didn’t mean it that way. It’s just that people in different parts of the country have different points of view, different references, and different experiences. Thanks for your reply! :)

Well kid, Duke Ellington never advised anyone to Take the AA Local!
vacciniumovatum (Seattle)
It would have been the C since that's the local. And (BTW), if I remember correctly, I would take the 3 train to the end of the line if I wanted to go to Harlem. Not as poetic, but probably far more accurate...
tk (Native Bronx girl)
Actually, Allen is quite accurate. In 1973, the AA (and also the B) was a local train on the IND line that ran up to Harlem and Washington Heights, and the C train actually ran from the Grand Concourse in the Bronx and down 8th Avenue. It was much later (in the '90's) that the C train started it's run from Washington Heights through Harlem. Allen, I really love your Duke Ellington spin!!
