Steve Bannon is available. Maybe he can help Joe the same way he helped Roy Moore.
Bzl15 (Edinburgh, Scotland)
Arpaio is a convicted criminal. Pardon does not wipe out conivition it confirms guilt but, forgives the penalty! So, IMP, his candidacy will be challenged in the Fedral court. However, if he is still ruled eligible, that will be a nice gift to the Democrats ala More. So, I would hope he is the Republican nominee....
Joe (Iowa)
Is he prohibited from running for some reason? Let the people of Arizona decide.
Mike (Republic Of Texas)
Is it me or are there no more "Trump is crazy" spots on the news? Tomorrow is a new day there'll be a new meme, I'm sure. Arizona is about 52% R and 48% D. Trump beat Hillary 50-46. Most of the elected politicians are Republican. It is reasonable to assume, if you voted for DJT and aren't happy with the job he has done, you may be inclined not to vote for a Republican. Trump drew some pretty good crowds during his campaign. He could probably do it again. Sheriff Joe would be an excellent replacement for Flake. And, John McCain will need replacing sooner or later. Sooner is my guess.
Dennis D. (New York City)
Another crazed cowboy who's been out in the Arizona sun too long. Guess there's no riding off into the sunset with this sheriff, no shame for demented old Joe. No, he's lost it a long time ago. The sad pathetic thing it took Arizonans decades to figure it out. That sun must really get to the brain, oui? DD Manhattan
Dr. Mysterious (Pinole, CA)
From your perch in the wide open spaces of my birthplace please illustrate your cred' as a knowledgeable proponent of border security! The sadness of a demented old Joe is apt "They want to put you back in chains" Biden... democrat icon and loon.
Dr. Mysterious (Pinole, CA)
Any Editorial Observer who has the Brass to be offended is an expose in the making. Being in support for the artificially promoted and agenda driven push for open borders and socialist citizen slavery is expected. The blind adherence to the destruction of our republic and it's freedom is now the badge of the "enlightened" one world bureaucratic crowd.
UWSer (Manhattan)
Aside from this deporable, what about the people of Maricopa County who kept him in office all those years? Inexcusable. (That means really bad.)
Leslie Wilson (Orinda, CA)
It's not about politics. It's about humanity and morality. And, unfortunately, the unrelenting 24/7 "news" cycle. He's almost old news. Sorry, Joe.
Freya Meyers (Phoenix)
This is great news for: Martha McSally and Kristen Synema. Bad news for: Kelli Ward. So in its own odd way, it’s quite a win for the good guys.
Harvey S. Cohen (Middletown, NJ)
"President Trump indicated he’d support a deal to protect young undocumented immigrants brought to this country as children" is not "good news". Any news about what Donald "indicates" or tweets is simply more news about his pathological irrationality and impulsiveness. The actual content of what he says is largely irrelevant. Only his concrete actions (appointments, pardons, executive orders, and bills signed) are real news, and it's ALL bad.
Backbutton (CT)
Hey, if Trump, then why not Arpaio? Says a lot about how the country has degenerated to the point that any riffraff think they can hold office. Trump has brought the bar down real low.
Impedimentus (Nuuk,Greenland)
We have a criminal President, so what's the problem with a criminal senator?
Jim Brokaw (California)
Run Joe, run! And get Trump to campaign for you, repeatedly! Please. Signed, A Liberal
Chris Wildman (Alaska)
Right. Because what this country needs at this moment in time is another legislator in Congress who is a racist, self-righteous octogenarian with a single mission - deporting people with brown skin "to Mexico - or whatever..."
dolly patterson (Silicon Valley)
Since Trump was elected, there sure are a lot of mentally ill people who have come out of the Republican party!
Steven McCain (New York)
Why Not? We have a reality show host as president and former talk show host being begged to run for president because of a speech she give in front of a bunch of Fat Cats. Since having experience in the line of work you are seeking is no longer a prerequisite it is only natural for Joe Arpaio to seek the Senate. Playing the tough guy while surrounded by armed security worked for 45 so why not for Joe? Joe made a living on being tough on people who couldn't fight back so why not continue his winning hand? Maybe in 2020 we might be lucky enough to get Joe to run with his benefactor. Rocket Man wouldn't have a chance against these two tough over the hill hombres. Someone really needs to wake us up from this bad dream we seem to be having.
Carla (Brooklyn)
another horrible despicable man in the trump coterie. He is no authority and no moral standing. He is a criminal. No one has to listen to him nor obey him. This country is truly going off the rails. I pray everyday democracy survives.
Robert (Chicago)
85 years old...says fresh blood is needed in the Senate! Couldn't have said it better myself, Joe.
slim1921 (Charlotte)
The Dems just picked up another Senate seat. Yahoooooo!
William S. Monroe (Providence, RI)
Arpaio thinks it perfectly reasonable to uproot someone from their normal life here and force them to spend six months in another country, but he was not willing to be uprooted from his own life to spend six months in federal prison, as punishment for his own illegal actions. Hypocrite!
sonnet73 (Bronx)
The man is a disgrace to law enforcement, America, and humanity. Get him out of our faces, please.
John Tully (Oakland, CA)
Please God, let Sheriff Joe be the Republican nominee. He will mobilize all decent and rational voters, not to mention every Latino in the state of Arizona, to turn out and beat the heck out of his twisted, evil hide.
Word (Way Out West)
“I have a lot to offer.” Oh my, another Trump.
Jim S. (Cleveland)
If Joe Arpaio needs a campaign manager, I hear Steve Bannon is available.
Not All Docs Play Golf (Evansville, Indiana)
If anything "looks stupid" here it is the photo behind him with "The Trumpinator." Life is not some fantasy western movie, Joe, where tough righteous cowboy sheriff descendants of Europeans wear white hats and beat up on "savages" and dispense tough-guy law from the hip. Grow up, Joe, you don't have that much time left.
Meredith (New York)
Every day, more grotesque political news....Trump, Roy Moore, this sheriff who abuses the law and human rights....we have authoritarians, religious dictators, white supremacists that mock the ideals and reputation of America....all a danger to American citizens.
TOM (Seattle)
I hope he runs and and wins the R nomination. When people like him are on the regular ballot, it causes voters to show their true colors. Look at Alabama. Very nearly half the voters, and a majority of white voters, voted for an open racist and mysogynist.
Frank McNeil (Boca Raton, Florida)
Joe Arpaio has "a lot to offer." About as much as Roy Moore or the ghosts of Theodore Bilbo, Nathan Bedford Forrest and Jefferson Davis. Per Bismarck, "there is a God who takes care of fools, drunks and Americans." Hope the deity looks favorably on Arizona, too.
K (Florida)
Just when you think the Republican Party couldn't sink any lower when Roy Moore was endorsed and embraced in his run for senator it does. They now have Joe Arpario as their new standard barer. This is no question that he will get a full-throated endorsement from our morally and ethically corrupt president who was overjoyed to use his power to pardon Arpario. We can only hope that the voters in Arizona will follow what the voters in Alabama did and deprive him of a seat in the US Senate.
Jack Lindahl (Hartsdale)
Why is Arpaio's announcement newsworthy? It has been covered by all the networks and in all the major newspapers. The Times, not intentionally ironically, I assume, even suggests that Arpaio made the announcement precisely because he craves media attention. And then goes ahead and gives it to him! Pro tip: don't feed the troll! It only makes him want more.
michael lillich (champaign, ill.)
Let's just hope that there's room for Sheriff Joe under the rock that Roy Moore crawled under. Shouldn't be a space problem in terms of their shared intellectual and moral smallness and shallowness. I trust there's adequate space under the rock for the other GOP salamanders-faquers looking for a 2018 going-ever-lower resting place. Resist. Organize. Vote.
An American in Paris (Paris, France)
Maybe if we're really lucky, he'll get Steve Bannon to run his campaign. That will guarantee that he'll lose. Because the truth is that Bannon is not nearly the political Svengali the media portrays him as. Not by a long shot.
N. Smith (New York City)
Just when you thought this country safely dodged the bullet by not having a serial pedophile from Alabama in the Senate, there comes news of this. Honestly. Could the swamp get any deeper? While no one should be surprised that "Sheriff Joe" Arpaio is back in the headlines again with the support of the racist-in-chief, Americans should take a good look at the message it's sending; namely that a criminal conviction means absolutely nothing, as long as you've got the ear of the president. Personally, I find the whole idea of Arpaio running for public office as offensive as the concentration-like camps he built in the Arizona desert, complete with undocumented immigrants wearing stripped suits. And his history of racial profiling Blacks and Latinos is legend. If this is what Mr. Arpaio means by saying he has "a lot to offer", it's time for this country to take a look at itself in the mirror, while remembering what happens when history repeats itself.
B. Ligon (Greeley, Colorado)
Joe Arpaio will fit right in, if he he gets elected.
Aurace Rengifo (Miami Beach, Fl)
This is all courtesy of Trump's pardon and endorsement of evil. It is not lost on me the irony of this abomination running for Senate when the country is immersed in an immigration debate in which the president is pretending to play Nixon goes to China. This event should wake-up democrats and the Latino population in order to take the Senate back. It is a good rehearsal opportunity for the 2020 elections.
Andrew Smallwood (Cordova, Alaska)
So many second rate people in public life! Something is amiss!
Susan (Paris)
As with Roy Moore the current GOP is a sick game of “Whack-a Mole”- as soon a one unfit candidate gets whacked another pops up. Is there no limit to their deplorable office seekers.
Jack be Quick (Albany)
Since politics is show business for ugly people, having Sheriff Joe run for the Senate is great news for this political junkie. I envy Alabama and Arizona - with the exception of Carl Paladino, we in NYS have such boring and colorless pols.
Barbarra (Los Angeles)
Joe Arpaio should be prosecuted for inflicting pain and suffering due to the inhumane treatment in the tent city prison. Inmates were denied food and water in 120 deg F temperatures - the prisoners had to buy from machines. No one has asked about imprisoned women. And this man was pardoned and is now running for Senate! The dregs of society are making it to the White House.
Sandra Garratt (Palm Springs, California)
This elderly racist man is clearly not qualified to be a US Senator nor should he be receiving precious money from US taxpayers. Age is not the issue, many Seniors are qualified to serve but this guy is not one of them. Age is not the issue, character, personal history and performance are. This man is an embarrassment to all American citizens and should not be taken seriously, there is no merit in anything he says or does. Indeed he represents many of the worst qualities that still exist in the USA. He should be shunned not elected to the Senate.....maybe avoid going to Arizona as long as they entertain this sort of disrespect for our Senate. Don't they have a person who is actually qualified and who will serve the people of Arizona....and not just the directions of the GOP's radical far right donors?
Not Funny (New York, NY)
This is what POTUS unleashed. Sadly, he could win. Beyond appalled
Tabula Rasa (Monterey Bay)
Does “America’s Sheriff” have Rudy Giuliani’s and Steve Bannon’s Support? When it comes to winning Alt Right Law & Order tickets their pink glory suits a symbol of success.
Thomas Lloyd Edwards (Copenhagen)
Honestly though, Arpaio doesn’t stand a chance in the GOP primary against Ward. She has the rich backers, he has the... well, he doesn’t really have any advantages over Ward. Neither of them are fit for office. The Democratic Party will pick this seat up anyway.
GH (Los Angeles)
I’m not too worried. He’ll flame out quickly. Trump endorsements have not exactly proven to be a winning strategy (0 for 3), and Republican machinery will starve him out by not providing funding for campaign. I’m more watchful of the more serious Republican candidates in the queue for Flake’s seat - the ones who would have a chance to win and will get campaign funds.
Blue Moon (Old Pueblo)
"... Mr. Arpaio is a morally repugnant publicity hound to Arizonans who’d like their state to be known for something more noble than racial profiling and 'Tent City.'" Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater! Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, where Pluto was discovered, is a major astronomy center. Flagstaff is home to Northern Arizona University, one of Arizona's three major state universities. Apollo astronauts trained at Meteor Crater just outside the city, where Eugene Shoemaker discovered that the crater is of impact origin, not volcanic -- a major find at the time. To the south, the Phoenix Art Museum and Heard Museum are internationally renowned. The Arizona Science Center is first rate. Phoenix is a mecca for baseball Spring Training and home to major sports teams; the Super Bowl has been hosted by the city. Arizona State University is a major research university. The city hosts the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, Arizona Opera, and Ballet Arizona. Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West is located in Scottsdale. Tucson is a major astronomy mecca, centered at the University of Arizona. Under the football stadium, a lab fabricates mirrors for the world's largest telescopes. A telescope in the local mountains searches for Near-Earth asteroids that could pose a danger to us. Arizona is home to major military bases: Luke Air Force Base, Davis-Monthan, and Fort Huachuca. Arizona has much to offer and great potential. Joe Arpaio is simply an ephemeral blemish.
Michael Carpenter (Derby, UK)
I think this is great news. He's sure to siphon off votes from any legitimate Republican choice, further fracturing the party and making it easier for a Democrat, any Democrat, to get into the Senate. Alabama all over again. We need more hardcore right-wing octogenarians to run for Congress; after McConnell's ACA fight and the horrible tax bill, a Democratic-led House (and hopefully Senate) might be the only way to end the current nightmare of a Trump presidency. Or at least contain it until 2020.
RS (Philly)
Wait a minute. Last I checked Arizonans get to chose the republican nominee and then their senator. So why all the hand wringing?
Tony Mendoza (Tucson Arizona)
Sheriff Joe should stick with the lottery. He has a considerably better chance to win the power ball than he does the Senate in Arizona. Oh sure he could win the primary. There are a lot of crazy Republicans in this state, but general election? Never.
Bus Bozo (Michigan)
Decades of blatant disregard for constitutional rights, equal abuse of both the accused and the convicted, failure to investigate hundreds of child abuse cases at the same time he had investigators in Hawaii digging (apparently at the beach) for President Obama's birth certificate, and a pardon for a federal conviction -- yet some people in Arizona are ready to support him? They're not gullible; they're delusional. Must be the heat.
rixax (Toronto)
I'd vote for Longmire. Not this guy from the early 20th century.
William S. Oser (Florida)
Trump will have to support him, can's not support the man he granted a Presidential pardon, can he? BTW, the only reason he can run for Senate is because of the pardon, a convicted Felon is excluded from a Senate run, but not from House of Reps. When/if he loses (Primary or general election) Trump will have no where to hide because this will not be an endorsement that he was suckered into after his first candidate lost the primary and Bannon twisted his arm.
Shellbrav (Arizona)
Arizona is a nice state to retire in. I have and it’s time for this 85 year old to as well.
Anthony (Bloomington, IN)
What is it lately with Republicans who have run afoul of the law running for the Senate?
Karen (Chicago)
Arpaio is just another Trumpeteer tooting the horn of the Donald. Members of the band also include Michael Flynn, Steve Bannon, Paul Manafort and Paula White. Others, like Stephen Miller and Anthony Scaramucci, who have auditioned for being part of Trump's band of enemies demonstrate they have no musical or political skill. Their only attribute is arrogant confidence and bold brashness. Hopefully this band will disband shortly.
M.S. Shackley (Albuquerque)
The silver lining in this dark cloud called Arpaio, is that it will bring out the Democrats in Arizona to vote, and with McSally leaving, that's one door (Gabby Giffords seat) open for Democrats to take back in the House. If Arpaio loses to another Republican in the primary, which Flake seems to be predicting, it is the Democrats to lose.
Jim In Tucson (Tucson, AZ)
As a long-term Tucson resident, I had to read about Joe Arpaio's escapades on a near daily basis. Phoenix and Tucson were always on a friendly competitive basis, but the one advantage the citizens of Pima County had over those in Maricopa was simple--we didn't have Joe Arpaio. Long-term residents in Arizona knew one simple, unwritten rule: Don't be brown-skinned in Maricopa County. I sincerely hope this is the last we'll ever hear of the man.
Lowery Smith (Nebraska)
One of the problems with the liberals in America is they are starting to be the liberal police state. Constantly bullying people with any different point of view. When in a divided society you only accept your point of view nothing gets done. Joe Arpaio represents another point of view in America. A lot of Americans think of him as a great Sheriff that did his job. He would get my vote.
USA first (Australia)
Joe Arpaio, if successful, will strengthen law and order in the US and diminish irresponsibility parading as freedom. A welcome move by an experienced, Republican, straight talking lawman.
bleurose (dairyland)
A convicted felon. There, fixed it for you.
Andy (Salt Lake City, Utah)
Arpaio's candidacy is definitely a referendum on Trump. The first question is whether or not the action was coordinated. I'm guessing the answer is a resounding no. As one prominent Democrat pointed out, the whole show sounds like a fund raising gimmick. The second question is whether the RNC, or more specifically Trump, will support the Arpaio's run. I would say "no" but after Roy Moore, you never can tell for sure. So here's the last and final question: Are Arizonans go to sit around and take this nonsense? Jeff Flake ostensibly bailed for anti-Trump positions. I find it hard to believe that Arizona is really so overwhelmingly pro-Trump though. If Arpaio survives more than a week without challenge, I may need to pull paperwork on the Arizona Democratic ticket. This carnival isn't going anywhere.
tito perdue (occupied alabama)
I do wish this article had explained how to contribute the allowable maximum to the Arpaio campaign. (I might have to take out a second mortgage.)
Demosthenes (Chicago)
Arpaio would be a superb choice to be the GOP Arizona Senate 2018 nominee. I say this as a Democrat.
John lebaron (ma)
Run, Joe, run. You'll either confirm how the country has fallen prey to craziness or show the nation that there are indeed limits to the madness it will tolerate. Either way, we'll know where we stand and what travel plans we should make accordingly.
Donna (California)
It's obvious the GOP cannot prevent anyone from running for a Senate seat (or any other office), but the decision to support a candidate lies squarely with the Party. Ultimately, it is the voter who decides. This IS Democracy- no matter how odorous and messy. Arizonans (at least those who can vote) will decide what they stand for by their vote. Arpaio is already a known Arizona entity. Maricopa County (with over 4 million residents) elected Arpaio six times (24 years)- so it appears, Arizonans are content with character and his ways. Democrats will certainly have to pull a rabbit out of the proverbial hat to convince millions of Arizona residents- Joe Arpaio's Wild-West antics isn't a good fit for the U.S. Senate. Can they do it; who knows?
Richard Luettgen (New Jersey)
I guess it’s fairly safe to assume that the editors don’t approve of Joe Arpaio. Arpaio’s perspectives on culture and probably ethnicity seem more than a bit over-the-top to me, as well; but in a fight for survival that his sanctuary city adversaries contend every bit as intensely as he does it’s not surprising to find a Joe Arpaio SOMEWHERE. May as well be in Arizona, certainly on the front-line in this war to either permit or bar invading hordes of illegal aliens from crossing our frontier and eventually challenging culture by demanding citizenship and the right to vote. This is a legitimate issue in America, and probably largely alone got Trump elected president. The unwillingness of elites to recognize its legitimacy and engage it, rather than simply demonize it and dismiss it as ILlegitimate, could very well see Sherriff Joe elected to the U.S. Senate. His age (85) actually may be a more serious issue than his social views to many Americans and even to most Arizonans when considering a Senate seat.
Thomas Zaslavsky (Binghamton, N.Y.)
Hi, Richard, I was hoping you would recognize the famous quotation in my recent post about "sleep[ing] off all the nonsense".
dbsweden (Sweden)
Mr. Luettgen reveals his right-wing biases with almost every comment he writes. Just one example is his use of "...invading hordes illegal aliens...demanding citizenship and the right to vote." One might properly ask if American"culture" will withstand those attempts to gain citizenship and voting rights after undocumented people have worked hard, raised families and avoided criminality for two decades in America. Are they a threat to America? Mr. Luettgen must try to remember that words have meaning and be careful to use only the words that accurately express the subject. Mr. Luettgen can thank his lucky stars that the First Amendment exists in the U.S. Constitution. Although he failed to use discretion in his choice of words, he can use this as a learning moment. It always helps to think before writing or speaking.
Richard Luettgen (New Jersey)
dbsweden: What utter hypocrisy. Last time I looked, Sweden has laws too, and expects its citizens and visitors to respect and obey them. Or AREN'T you trying to pry Julian Assange from the Ecuadorian embassy in London on sexual assault charges? Oh ... some laws are okay because you agree with them and some aren't because you don't? One doesn't need to hold "right wings biases" to hold such a view in contempt and to require that laws be enforced. Other than the most basic, as regard for instance murder and assault, laws are largely the social consensus that defines acceptable behavior arrived at by compromise between often disagreeing parties. You seek to give illegal aliens in America a pass because you happen to be one of those who DOESN'T believe in frontiers and rejects the notion that culture has value, and you attack ALL laws. Well, I'm sure that Julian Assange would agree with you.
Look Ahead (WA)
Trump is probably looking into whether he can rescind the Arpaio pardon before the GOP loses another US Senate seat. Wacko birds like Arpaio and Moore tend to do better in primaries because of typically low turnout, which can be dominated by activists like the Tea Party. Even the best efforts of the GOP to play "hide the polling places" in Hispanic neighborhoods are destined to fail. This could be the year.
Louisa Glasson (Portwenn)
This is exactly why centrist Republicans need to get involved in the primaries, or before. They have allowed the wackos to take over their party. Sane Republicans have the power; they just don’t use it.
Mike Roddy (Alameda, Ca)
Let's do something clever here for a change: Democrats need to vote for Joe in the Republican primary. If he wins, he will be easier pickings than Moore was in Alabama, and Arizona can reclaim its rightful position as one of the remaining sane states in the Union.
Mike (Republic Of Texas)
So far, 60 people think that is a great idea. It would presume that whichever Democrat is the candidate, would beat Sheriff Joe. Maybe. Let us look to the past for an example. Suppose that were tried in the last election. What if all of the Democrat primary voters voted for DJT? That would ensure Hillary's opponent would be DJT, an easy win. However, the analyst class would have gone into meltdown. Trump would have had an unprecedented primary turnout. It would have spooked the Democrats. And, suppose your plan were implemented. What is to say the Democrat primary winner is the most electable? What if you got a Roy Moore Democrat? And what candidate would go along with this, if he thought he could win the primary? The system we now have is as stable, as it is genius. People vote for the candidate that has the voters best interest at heart. Usually the two best candidates are presented to the voters. Not always. But, usually. I would concede, this would be a good race to judge voter acceptance of DJT. It could be a very expensive race, though.
tito perdue (occupied alabama)
Certainly I shall support Mr. Arpaio and contribute, although he is not the sort of white racist that I am. I continue to seek the candidates that will help in making America white again.
mancuroc (rochester)
The Republic may still be intact on paper, but it's really wobbling morally when it even tolerates the possibility of discredited and corrupt characters like Moore and Arpaio running for office. And, yes, trump. Fortunately we still have people in politics who when pushed enough can find the spine to defend the decency of our institutions. Diane Feinstein has always been a stickler for Senate process, so it's all the more significant that it was she who broke tradition for the sake of the public interest. The more integrity that's shown in the Senate, the less attractive it will be to the likes of Moore and Arpiao.
Bruce Northwood (Salem, Oregon)
Just what America needs. Another dangerous republican in the senate.
justsomeguy (90266)
A real gift for Democrats. Maybe Roy Moore will campaign with him.
Scott K (Bronx)
As far as Republicans go, the hits just keep on coming.
Bill Underwood (Oregon)
Joe Arpaio’s Twitter account is @RealSherrifJoe. now that he is no longer a sheriff, perhaps he should change his account name to something more appropriate. I'd recommend @RealPardonedCriminalJoe, if that's not already taken.
Innocent Bystander (Highland Park, IL)
Misspelling sheriff is probably not intentional. Like Trump, Arpaio is "real" all right ... a real clown.
James (Phoenix)
I agree with Sen. Flake that Mr. Arpaio's ostensible candidacy likely won't last long. He lost reelection in solidly-Republican Maricopa County by a sizable margin due to his misdeeds. His running also would lead to a brawl among the far-right fringes of the party because of Kelli Ward's candidacy. [Bannon announced his support for Ms. Ward.] Mr. Arpaio probably has some sycophant whispering in his ear that he can make a go of it. I suspect others with more pull will tell him to abandon the effort. In fact, Mr. Arpaio may say he is doing a favor to Pres. Trump by forgoing his campaign because it makes Ms. Ward's path to the nomination easier. In sum, he'll see the writing on the wall and drop out rather than face a second consecutive loss. Tweeting he is a candidate and filing papers are two very different things.
tito perdue (occupied alabama)
I've been contributing to the Kelli Ward campaign, but will have to switch to Mr. Arpaio if he runs.
dolly patterson (Silicon Valley)
"he'll see the writing on the wall".....I don't think so....if he was capable of doing this he never would have ended up in jail!
Robert (Chicago)
His 15 minutes are up yet.
Just Some Guy (Around Boston)
What is it about the current America that brings out the absolute dregs to run for office, win office, hang on to office after being indicted, continue to implement policy deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. I think this is the Bizarro America. Please note, although I don't agree with the intelligentsia (elite) of the Republican party, at least they are normal and one can carry out a reasonable conversation. The Arpaios, Bannons, Moores, TRUMPS of the world are simply weird. Where did they come from? Could they please go back to those places?
mancuroc (rochester)
I'll tell you where they came from. They came out a far-right fringe that the "intelligentsia (elite)" of the Republican Party, the ones you think of as "normal", cultivated as the party's base. Perhaps they did not not fully share their values, but they were perfectly content to awaken the monster if they thought it would help them win power, thinking they would remain in control.. Sort of like the complacent old-line conservatives, industrialists and business leaders in 1930s Germany.
Jim Brokaw (California)
There is no way that even Barry Goldwater could fit into today's Trump Republican party. Remember when conservatives respected and obeyed the Constitution. Remember when conservatives understood that the rule of law was everything, and that checks and balances were the key to our democracy? I respect Sen. Flake for calling out Trump - I'd have even more respect for him if he voted his as his speeches and comments lead me to believe he really feels, regardless of the Republican party's legislative idiocies. Talk is one thing, the votes is another - but at least he's called the emperor on his lack of clothes... Arpaio is another 'party first, Constitution second' Republican, who cares more about "winning" that about the rule of law. Sheriff Joe figured he could just keep right on doing what he wanted, even when the courts told him "no" - and that kind of disrespect of the law has no place in the Senate. Senators swear to uphold the Constitution and the law, not only the parts they believe in but all of it... unlike Sheriff Joe and Roy Moore, who put their own personal beliefs ahead of the Constitution and their oaths. Arpaio should be in his old jail now, not running for Senator.
VB (SanDiego)
Who on earth are the "intelligentsia (elite) of the Republican party" who are normal, and with whom one can carry out a reasonable conversation? Would that be Mitch McConnell, who held a secret meeting of republican "elites" on the day of Barack Obama's first inaugural wherein they agreed to obstruct EVERY governmental action for as long as Obama remained president? And who later literally stole a SCOTUS seat? Because, those are reasonable actions by a person who has sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. Would it be Paul Ryan, whose family survived on Social Security benefits after his father died; but, who has spent HIS governmental career trying to ensure that no other Americans receive those same benefits? Would it be Charles Grassley, who assures us we would all be rich enough to enjoy the "benefits" of the recently enacted republican tax plan if only we would stop spending "every penny on booze, women and movies"? Would it be Ted Cruz, who engineered a damaging government shut-down? Would it be Joni Earnst, who claimed to have worn plastic bags on her feet as a child to protect her shoes from rain since her family couldn't afford rain boots, when--in fact--her family received millions of dollars in farm subsidies from the Federal government? Who among the current crop of national republicans currently qualifies as reasonable?
Tom (Boulder)
A perfect candidate for the Party of law and order.
