my guess is that the swat team is trying to get this girl out a riot. be cause the linen of swat people are in line as if there was a riot. an they have zip ties in a cuff like which should infer that this is a riot.
Enlace (Lawrence)
We as a class think this is about black lives matter. They are protesting for their rights because of their skin tone. Due to racism. Aswell as because people are not respecting them as people and only seeing them as skin tone, people are not respecting them. This is a protest.
Miss Marians (Torremolinos)
Two policemen are helping the woman there has been a terrorist attack.
Miss Marians (Torremolinos)
The police are arresting a woman because she is a leader of a protest. Or this is an event for peace because of the film camera. Maybe she has stolen something. The woman is not moving and the police take her hand. Maybe the woman has a gun and the police have taken the gun and are arresting her.
Richard Jay (Orlando)
The young lady is actually the Sergeant of the Guard and she misread the Uniform of the Day posting in the HQ the morning in question. The two Corporals have stepped forward to escort her to the HumVee and then back to the barracks for a quick change.
MIranda (usa)
I can see a young lady dress nicely doing no harm but she could be protesting her free rights and the two officer seem to be arresting her doing nothing. She also shows no way of resisting and not causing a big problem for to be arrested.
Harper (Wilmington NC)
I think that this lady in a peace maker or something like that, and she is trying to make peace or they are being kind to her and wants her to go with her.
Jesse G (Houston)
They are begging her kindly to go with them without hurting her
Connor Allard (Tamworth Nh)
I think the girl in the dress was protesting for African American rights but the swat team thinks for some reason that she is going to cause harm to them in some way so the are going to arrest her for peacefully protesting so I think that she should sue wherever she is for arresting her for showing what she has the right to do.
Yi Wang (NY)
Probably is protest, but only one person require that much police?
Valerie (NY, NY)
In this photo, I see a well-dressed woman facing two armed police with a troop behind them. The woman looks calm and collected while the cops' actions show panic, which creates a great juxtaposition.
Jorge Solis (Houston)
she is being handcuffed because of the color of her skin maybe.. but all in out she was in the only suspect that went in front of the cops to either confront them or they might think she is a suicide bomber.
Samantha M (Galena Park)
i believe she is peacefully trying to protest within her rights. The police are trying arrest her in a nice way.
Emily mendoza (houston )
seeing the cops gping up to the female looking like there going to arrest her .
Lindsey N. (Mesa AZ)
Models are posing for a photo shoot for Vogue's new Fall 2018 Winter Wear collection.
oscar munoz (galena park)
i believe she is peacefully trying to protest which is within her rights. The police are going to try to arrest her.
Sarai Alvarez (Galena park)
i believe that this women is protesting peacefully and she is being grabbed and most likely going to get arrested
jorge medellin (Houston)
i feel that they are taking her to jail for protesting peacefully.
Leah (IL)
I believe that the woman is trying to protest peacefully for the black rights movement. But she is getting arrested
Rae (Ill)
In this picture, the woman is fearlessly showing the police that she is harmless. The police do not know why she is coming for them and that is why they seem to be pulling away from her. The woman seems to be holding hands with one of the officers as if saying, "I'm human too." Or she could just be thanking them for something. Doesn't have to be negative.
Jason (Illinois)
I believe the woman is a suicide bomber who is being tackled y law enforcments.
Catherine (pekin)
It looks like she is a peace protester and the police want to protect her from the violence of the crowd.
Brandon Scalf (Pekin, Illinois)
It looks like in the photo, the women is either standing up to the guards as they detain her. Either this, or, the guards are standing down as she is showing signs of peace.
Mary (Illinois)
A girl is standing firm in her beliefs, being protected by officers.
Michaela (Illinios)
I didn't know if the police were running to arrest her or to like save her from something, but I knew it was a very high-stress situation that could end very badly if it got out of hand.
Tristen (Illinois)
I believe that this image is taking place at a protest. The woman is firm in her belief, so she doesn't fear getting arrested for it.
cheyenne (illinois)
The police are protecting this woman
Brooke (USA)
Woman Protests Proudly
Alex (Texas)
The police is protecting the girl in the dress
Kylah Evans (Houston, Texas)
In this picture i feel like there is a protest going on between the police and African American, involving equality. The woman could be a symbol of peace. She is showing the policemen that African Americans are not who they think that we are. All we want is for the authorities to treat us the same way they treat their own races. It also tells a story, because its been a ton of years were they wouldn't want us to be treated like them. They feel like they're above us, but in reality, we're all the same. Whether they like it or not.
Gisel Marroquin (Galena Park Highschool)
i think whats going on in this picture is that shes showing herself and showing that shes not a bad person. I also think shes just trying to make peace and the police just want to arrest her because of her skin tone.
Briana Ibarra (Houston TX)
I think the girl is showing she's not a bad person to the police. She's trying to stop the war and make peace. So I guess the police is trying to arrest the girl.
kimberly gonzalez (texas)
i think she wants to pass somewhere but shes african and they dont let her but they are not being so agressive with her because shes calm peaceful and shes dressing nice dosent seem to do nothing bad
Luis (Houston)
Based on the peaceful look of the women i think its a peaceful protest about something and the police is trying to stop her.
jadevion taylor (gpisd)
i think she she is trying to stop them from what they trying to do she dont look like she trying to hurt no one shre dress like she going somewhere soo she wouldnt hurt noo one
Meghan S (Hudson, OH)
This picture is about a woman trying to stop police from advancing. The two officers are asking her to move out of the way. She obviously does not want to move out of their way and maybe protesting something against the police. She is protesting peacefully against them and is not in anyway aggravating the officers. She could be handing the officers something that they dropped, but they are facing the wrong way for them to be heading away from something they dropped, and the woman looks very determined to be handing something over. In conclusion, this picture is about a woman peacefully protesting something against the police.
Chloe B (WHRHS)
I think that this girl is protesting and the swat team was called to get the protest to stop. The girl is standing her ground and not backing down to the swat team. She also isn't being violent so they have no reason to move her or stop the protests since she is being peaceful.
Sofa Delarosa (palmdale)
I think what is happening in this picture is that there is a protest going on and that the swat team was called to stop it. The African American girl looks like she is not going to stop protesting and is about to be arrested for it even though it looks like a peaceful protest.
Jeannetthe (palmdale)
What is happening in this image it is, an African American woman that is being stopped by an arms. The girl is standing up for something that other people like and other people don't wont. so obviously that the police dose not like it at all. so the police is standing in front of the young girl. there is probably there is other people standing behind her getting ready for the fight.
aidan (newcastile )
that a girl is resting arrest.it looks like a stand off and she is not wanting the police to go past it looks like she is protesting for black rights and the police are not liking it
charlie.pirrottina (Newcastle)
it looks like the two police men are going to arrest her because she's done something
carol (Newcastle)
The girl is standing up for something that other people like and other people don't wont. so obviously that the police dose not like it at all. so the police is standing in front of the young girl. there is probably there is other people standing behind her getting ready for the fight.
Fred (Cleveland)
It looks like the police are teasing with her.
Miles (GP)
im not sure what to think of this picture but that they look like there preventing her from passing....
Dante Flores (Galena park high school)
what i see is a lady standing their protesting against something but but two officers goes towards her to stop her or trying to figure out if she is ok
Benjamin Mendoza (galena park texas)
i think the lady is doing a peaceful protest and is recording while shes doing it.
guillermo (houston)
I see a lady trying to enter and there are 3 officers not trying to let her in . I think that the lady just want to pass to protest but the officers don't let her.
Brandon Ceniceros (Houston Tx)
I see white police officers, a black lady in a dress and more people in the back. I think that the lady is protesting for racism reasons and that police officers are walking up to her to arrest her. The people in the back are just watching everything.
Adriana Pina (Houston, Texas)
They are not letting her in because of her race. You can tell by the way they´re blocking her.
Jorge Calzada (Houston)
i think she is recording how they are treating people when they get closer to them
Leslie Garcia (Houston Tx)
in this picture it looks like she wants to cross to a place that looks like it is not safe because of the police guarding the area
Jonah (HMS)
In this scene I see a woman standing in front of two officers that look like they are surprised that a woman in a dress is coming up to them. Because of this, I think this is a protest. One reason I say this is because in the background there people that look like they want to see want happens. Another thing this picture could be about is it could be a movie. I don't think this is right because the people in the background look like they are not really at attention.
Brady P (Hudson ohio)
there keeping her from entering the area because there is probably something dangerous. she is not going to get cofee because the police would not arrest her or grab her for getting coffee in conclusion she is being kept away from there
Josh (hudson OH)
They are keeping her from entering the area because there is probably something dangerous behind ther, like a political protest. Where things can get very dangerous. They might be giving her a sweet gesture, because one is holding her hand. I doubt it because they wouldn't lose their job character. I think think they are just keeping her safety.
Sergio Rodriguez (GPHS)
i see a woman standing in front of a squad of police officers and she wants peace with them for everyone to get along and stop killing or having big riots in the streets because the violence just too much already that it need to stop before everything just goes out of line so that is my thoughts on this picture that is happening .
Jose Pena (Houston)
I see a woman standing in front of a couple of cops, the woman seems to be negotiating with them trying to bring them peace
Mia Marroquin (Galena Park)
i see a women standing in front of police possibly to try and make peace or standing for what shes against.
Alejandra Hernandez (Galena Park High School)
I think the girl is on her way to a dance. And maybe one of her parents were killed in the army or in s.w.a.t. And the soldiers are doing a ceromony for her. because she looks very calm and the men in the back look calm too. And there is people just observing them. The two men up close appear to be shaking her hand.
Leonardo Contreras (Houston)
I see a lady standing in front of the police officers and shes maybe protesting against police brutality or some other issue in society. It looks like they are in a college because i see students in the background.
Wuendoly Salgado (Texas)
In this picture you can see a teenage girl standing in front of a group of police men. The police men are heavily protected and armed, and are all group in a wall formation. In this situation there might be a protest of some sorts occurring, bystanders just looking for afar. The girl and the group of people she is probably joined with are fighting for their rights.
Krystal Garcia (Galena Park)
i see a lady, a young lady, standing in front of what seems to be a swat team and she seems to be calmed trying to talk to them in a calm manner while they seem to be worked up and ready to solve a problem. She seems as if she´s trying to protest something calmly.
Angel Fonseca (houston)
i see a women trying to bring world peace with the federal government, but they are not trusting her because of he race.
samantha montemayor (houston)
I see a woman in front of many officers, every single one of the officers have their fully gear on. It may be that she needs help or the officers are stopping her from doing something.
Tiana Mayfield (Houston, Tx)
This is a peaceful protest. There is only two ways to stop a peaceful protest and that is to either negotiate with the protesters or disturb the peace. These law enforcement officers are choosing to disturb the peace and treat this girl like she has armor just as tough as theirs. The law enforcement officers wear blocking equipment and weapons of destruction which symbolizes close-mindedness and fear. The girl where an open, breezy dress with her arms open which symbolizes an open mind, peace, and liberation. She also has her weapon of exposure which is way more fair than any weapon of destruction. Most people fear the newness of liberation and that causes a negative reaction such as this one.
Dharma C (Hudson, Ohio)
This could either be a 'riot' or the woman is protesting about something because there are lots of officers with riot gear on. Or the woman could be committing suicide because if you look at her hands, she's holding something and the two officers are with her so they can stop her; she doesn't seem afraid. This seems to take place in a public place because there are many people in the background.
Ivan p. (Houston)

Francisco F (Galena Park)
i see a woman standing in front of the police officers and she is probably trying to negotiate with them to bring peace in the streets instead of having a big riot.they probably are in a college in the background you can see students standing there and looking at the women and the officers.
Jorge Calzada (Houston)
i think she is recording how they are treating the people when they get closer to them.
Michell Garza (Galena Park)
the image shows a woman with a policeman in the middle of the street and around there are more people watching, it's like a kind of protest, it seems as if they were helping her in something or as if she wanted to give something to them.
X'avier (Houston)
i think there making her put down the phone because she over doing it and not standing back so they can do there job and calm the people down
Rich Patrock (Kingsville, TX)
I see a couple of extremely likely scenarios. 1) the police in riot gear are helping a young woman across the street. She is very focused and doesn't seem to know where to go. 2) the police in riot gear are taking turns dancing with the young woman in the street. This must a scene from Fat Tuesday. I imagine that each in the long line will have a turn in the dance. She looks pretty tired from all the activity, however. 3)
Superfine Language Arts (Illinois)
In the picture we see a woman walking toward police officers. We think the woman is asking for help because someone, maybe a loved one, got hurt. We think this because she looks a little worried. We also think perhaps the woman is sacrificing herself for her loved ones. We can infer that the man is trying to calm her down and is trying to ask her questions about what happened.
Aiden L. (Hudson OH)
I think it is like a black lives matter protest. It looks like it is on a large plot of land maybe, a college campus and there is a black lady standing in the middle of the road not letting car through. When the police got the call they figured it was a large protest and that's why there are like 20 police officers and 1 protesters. Now you could say that is is a girl trying to suicide maybe after a breakup dinner (maybe why's she wearing the dress). But if that were the case all the police probably wouldn't be wearing riot gear.
Spencer W (Hudson, Ohio)

Kathryn Palmieri (Hudson Ohio)
I think that the woman in the picture is being stopped by the police from going into a dangerous area in the road. One reason why I think this is because there is a thick line of policemen or policewomen blocking a large section of the street. This led me to think that something happened there such as a car crash or a fist fight that could be dangerous to civilians. Another reason why I came to the conclusion is that the officers don’t look particularly tough or angry at the woman as they probably would be if she committed a crime. This is why I think that they are trying to protect her and not arrest her. In addition to that, I came to this idea because there are people lining the sides of the street as if they’re watching something play out, like a car crash or a fight. Some might say that the police are trying to control a march or rally. However this could not be true because we can only see one person in the street. In addition to that, she does not look mad and is not holding any sort of sign. All of the evidence I found in the picture points to the idea that the police are trying to direct the woman away from a dangerous situation on the road.
Josephine L (Hudson, Ohio)
I think that in this picture, she is standing in front of the police because she is protesting against something that she believes is wrong. The police are stopping her from going any further. I think that she was about the throw something towards the police. I think this because there is something in her hand that I can’t seem identify what it is. Someone might think that she getting arrested. But you can see that the zip tie hand holds are still connected to their pants and they aren’t using them. The object she might be throwing at the police is tear gas. For these reasons that is why I think that she is protesting against something.
Audra H (Hudson, Ohio)
In this picture, there is a woman that appears to be protesting against something. The men standing in front of her could be part of an army, a S.W.A.T. team, or something else. She looks to be handcuffed to something, as a form of protesting. The woman could be in danger, but there is no sense of panic, or fright on the woman's face. Instead, she seems cool, and collected. In conclusion, the woman is protesting.
Andrew H. (Hudson, Ohio)
I believe that in this picture, there is a protest that caused armed men to barricade so they could stop it. It looks like the woman is trying to go to the protest area, but there are two people that seem to be warning her not to go in. A counterclaim would be that she is the guard’s boss, but if that were true, they wouldn’t look like they would be warning her. To conclude, I believe the two men are blocking her from going into an area that’s having a bad protest.
Carter Morris (HMS)
This image shows a women who is silently protesting against something. I say this because the body language of the policemen are saying " stop" and they are also handcuffing her. Another reason why I say this is because there seem to be people in the background, and it seems that they are recording this event. One more reason why I say that she is silently protesting is because she seems to be standing there with very little emotion, which could mean that she is standing up for something she believes in and I also assume that there is a crowd behind her due to the line of policeman who look like they might be blocking a certain area to make sure they don't cross through. Some people may say that she is protesting alone in this picture. But if this was true, why does it look like she would be so ok with being arrested? So in conclusion, this women is silently protesting in something she believes in.
Marvin H. (NYC)
The first thing that catches my eye in the photo, is a woman being blocked by so many armored police. My conjecture is that the woman is dangerous. I say this because the two officers in front of her are unsteady in their footing and look tense. The photo also suggests the woman is probably protesting along with a group of people out of shot behind her. That would explain the plastic handcuffs the two officers are carrying and the human barricade behind them. Besides that, there is nothing else to say.
mariah sky (khs)
They may be checking the women for weapons and making sure she is doing the right thing. Also, what they are trying to do is stop her from whatever she is doing wrong. She has her eyes closed and she is standing steal because they are approaching her.
Brooke E. (Hudson, Ohio)
In this NYT photo, the women had come up to these two men which seem to be apart of a swat team as you can see the rest of the team behind them. I beleive that this women is protesting and saying her opinions. I have chosen this opinion because of the setting. This women is also brave for standing up and protesting her ideas to the men considering that they have weapons on them and that they have their own ideas. This scene could also be one of the swat member proposing because as we can see, one of the member seems to be kneeling on one knee. He also looks to be hod her hand or it could just be the angle of the picture. In conclusion, I believe that this is a women protesting to to members of a swat team out in the streets.
Mahi Jahangir (9th) (New York City)
I believe that in this picture a peaceful protest is in process. After listening to my classmates converse about this topic I have came to a conclusion that this is some type of modern civil rights movement. As you can see in the picture, the two men that are rushing to her seems to have some type of plastic restraint. Usually those are used against riots and protests. This deliberately shows us that this is some kind of movement. Pushing this topic further, you can interpret the woman's pose as something that is polysemic. Her pose may signify her faith, her beliefs and her genuine personality. She does not seem to be making any oral contact with the "S.W.A.T" Team showing a solemn sign of resistance. Adding on, based on her complexion, I believe this is a fight for racial equality considering the circumstances and particular mindsets during this era. In conclusion, the way that this woman exudes herself in front of dozens of men is just utterly astonishing.
Brooke M (HMS ohio)
In the New York Times photo I see a woman in fancy dress clothes with closed eyes and standing still. I also see a type of army behind her and 2 of the men rushing to her with there arms out. In the background I see some type of building with a couple people just standing there watching. I think this is a picture of a woman trying to get a point across or doing some type of pro test. The woman is standing there looking very proud and has a very serious face. She has her one hand out and one on her stomach. The one man is running over trying to cover her hands. People may mistaken this picture as a threat or a violent action. I would disagree, because all of the army would be running towards her with guns and ways to stop her. But there is only two men and the rest are standing there with there arms crossed and watching the event. So overall, I think that the young woman is doing a pro test that is a offensive to others so they have a army to stop her.
Division 15 (Kamloops, BC Canada)
We have two ideas. 1. This is a peaceful protest. It looks like the men in black are SWAT officers. We think that one of the officers is approaching the girl and putting out his hand to show he means no harm. 2. Something has happened in the building in the background. Perhaps the girl is approaching the officers to say thank you for them helping people in need.
Rachel N (Hudson Ohio)
This is a picture of a police SWAT team addressing a peaceful protester. Based on the matching black clothes, helmets, backpacks and police gear on all the men to the left, you can deduct that they are a SWAT team, and seeing as they are all directing their eyes at her you can tell the woman in the middle of the road is the conflict they’re addressing. You can also tell she is peacefully protesting because she is standing in the middle of the road with a look of resolve on her face to stay there and her eyes seem closed in peace. Now, you could see a girl being escorted to prom by her Father that’s a SWAT team member in this photo, because of her long dress, but that is very uncertain because of the females sober facial expression. Therefore this must be a picture of a police SWAT team addressing a peaceful protester.
Casey (New York)
The women was probably having some sort of peaceful protest. When the SAWT team approached her she does not really seem afraid, if anything she looks calm. Those who approached her are the ones who look startled, maybe even a little afraid. One of them looks like they were about to stumble backwards. The are many SWAT officers in the background, they are in a line formation. In the background you can also make out other people who seem to be watching the commotion. They are probably confused because the women does not seem at all very dangerous. What makes me say this is her body language. She is standing firmly on the ground, she put her hands out calmly and her eyes are closed in a relaxing way. She does not look at all tense or scared. There is also a building in the background. Maybe she wanted to make this protest specifically there and it could be due to its surroundings. The place where a protest will take place is important because it usually has something to do with the point of the protest. Like people protesting in front of the white house means they want the president or whoever that is inside to hear them out. Maybe that building has someone inside it that the women wanted the attention of. Maybe the boss of a company or something like that. So its surroundings could be significant as to why she is there.
Maddie S (Hudson, Ohio)
In this New York Times picture, there are SWAT members who are approaching a woman. This woman is obviously mad or sad. She is protesting based on the way they all look and what she has in her hand. She has some sort of weapon because the SWAT officers are taking it from her, as it could pose a threat or be harmful to people. These officers are arresting her for protesting, holding weapons and getting too close to them with those weapons. Some might think that she doesn’t in fact have weapons, but it seems obvious because the SWAT team is taking something from her and she looks mad. Also, they are running so that they can get the weapon away from her as quickly as possible before she hurts anybody else. This photo shows a woman who is protesting as the SWAT officers approach her to demobilize her of any weapons she has.
Kyle m (PA)
I see a woman getting arrested, i can tell this becuase she is being approached by swat looking officers. This is also taken place in a public area in the middle of a street
Kaia R (hudson, ohio)
In this picture I see two men in all black it looks like they might be in a s.w.a.t team or part of the police. I see a woman in a dress and it looks like one of the men are holding her hand it almost looks like they're about to dance because of what position they're in. I think this picture is a girl trying to protest and trying to give them a threat, but it doesn’t look like she made the threat it looks like she as just a messenger from the other protesters i think this because she looks calm and confident, the two men from the SWAT team look liked they ran up to her because of the position they were in. Some people may think that the girl is in the middle of getting arrested but her face is very calm and it looks like the SWAT team isn’t bothering her that much, also there is not handcuffs in the man's hand and there isn’t any handcuffs around her wrists. In this picture it’s simply a girl sending a threat or talking to the SWAT team members.
Chloe P. (Hudson, OH)
In this New York Times photograph, two swat officers are approaching a woman, who is most likely protesting are posing a threat. Based on the multiple signs that can be seen in the background, I can assume there is a protest going on. The woman is probably being viewed at as a protester, and is holding two items in her hand which would cause an altered reaction to them, as this could be a weapon. The men standing on the side are fellow swat officers, based on the heavily weaponed uniform and swat helmet, who are guarding something, ready to act if necessary. There is a line of people in the background, and most of which are observing the situation, while some appear to be taking photos or videos. You could say this image is capturing a women being arrested in the moment, but from both the lack of handcuffs and the men and women’s body language, it can be assumed otherwise. If the officers were about to arrest this woman, they wouldn’t stand as slouched, and at ease. The women also displays an upright, calm posture with a straight. which is something one would be unlikely to portray while being arrested. For the following reasons. This image shows a protesting women being approached by two officers ready to disarm her of potential weapons.
Sandra J (Hudsonn, OH)
In the image there seems to SWAT team with a women during protest. They look like they are trying to escort her off of the scene but she is refusing to. The SWAT team in the background seem tobe watching the conflict and eyeing it very closely incase backup is needed. Some may say that she did something wrong and is refusing to get arrested for it. That would not make sense because, the way the officers are trying to escort her does not seem very threatening or the way their facial expressions look, like they're callling her out. In conclusion this is a scene of a women being escorted off of a protest.
Danielle L. (Hudson, Ohio)
In this NYT photo, there is many SWAT officers making a human wall during a Black Rights protest. There are many people off in the distance watching the conflict. The woman is nearing two SWAT officers who are coming forward to try to get her to turn around. Notice that the woman is holding her stomach with one hand, which could be some sort of signal or a sign that she’s in pain. She has her eyes closed as if knowing what is going to happen to her. Although this could be a SWAT officers wall protecting a famous celebration for celebrities, it is evident by the way the two officers are approaching her, forcefully and concerned, that this is a scene of a Black Rights protest.
Caleb Frustino (Souderton)
It looks as if men from the SWAT team are coming after a woman for doing something. There was probably a protest and everyone got kicked out by the SWAT team but this woman is refusing to leave. They look like they are going to arrest her. The rest of the SWAT team is in the background standing around but they were probably helping end a protest earlier before this picture was taken. She doesn't seem to scared so she is probably proud of her decision.
Mrs. Gresser (Wisconsin)
I think that this is a ceremony or party and it's only for famous people because there are a lot of parties like that. The men are checking her ID to make sure she is famous.
Ilayda Arin (NY)
In this picture I see, two men on the SWAT approaching the girl to handcuff her. Either the girl is being handcuffed by the police or respected by the police. Also, behind the scene, there is an army of SWAT observing the main act in the middle with the girl. Although the two policemen look serious, the woman looks peaceful and energized. This image looks like took place in present day or at the park or road.
Emilee (Kentucky )
This girl did something wrong and and these guys are coming to get her to make sure she doesn't do it again
Zoe P (Auburn )
The men in large black suits are apart of the SWAT or FBI. They are trying to persuade a women who is practicing her religion in the middle of the street, to get off the street. People are watching. Looks like an everyday neighborhood.
bob pt 3 (Hollywood, California)
I think they’re having a dance contest.
Eric (Auburn)
The woman was a terrorist hostage that was just rescued.
Lydia Oliber (Auburn MA )
I think that it is a Star Wars themed proposal and she does not look very happy about it.
Sam (MA)
I think there is a girl that is protesting but is being very peaceful and calm about it. She is showing that she is not afraid and wants to make her point.
Dj (Not New York)
I think that she is protesting something, that's just my hunch.
Aaron (Auburn, MA)
This picture is depicting peaceful protest by the woman. There are many officers, but only one woman. She is getting arrested as she is being handcuffed. Many officers aren’t doing anything, they are pretty chill, but the two arresting her, are pretty aggressive.
Brian (Arkansas)
1.) a girls is being stopped by the SWAT team or something similar 2.)there is a line of officers blockading the street, she is the only one walking towards them/ trying to be stopped, it looks like the officers have zip tie handcuffs 3.) there are other people watching in the background, it looks to be going on in a city Possibly a protest, or even a proposal, and as Bob said... it’s probably very romantic.
Alysha (Auburn)
I think that this is a type of protest from the woman of a certain organization to all of the men in the black suites. She seems very calm and firm and she is trying to get her point across. This probably didn't go very well because they seem to be putting hand cuffs on her.
Ryan (Massachusetts)
I believe the woman in the picture is a protester, judging by the militarized police moving towards her and in the background. It seems the police are handcuffing and detaining the woman and she seems relatively calm through the situation. The woman is peacefully and willingly being detained, and the people in the background look calm also.
Maeve (Boston )
In this picture, I think the police are closing the street for the woman portrayed as elegant and confident. Possibly a protest and most likely a political act.
Brendan A (USA)
I believe that she is prostesting at a rights march, or a black lives matter march. It seems like she is being arrested because there are police officers in riot gear in the photo.
Ethan P (Massachusetts)
I think that the SWAT team that is shown in the picture are handcuffing the girl with zip tie cuffs. She probably is getting arrested for trying to protest something.
Kyrone (Planet Earth)
I believe that some sort of protest or events has happened, endangering the common people. Henceforth, police and special forces have been called in to intervene with the situation. It appears a protester, or suspect, has been told to approach the officiers, as they prepare to search said person. A line of officiers behind them stand guard against any unexpected threats.
Connor (Massachusetts )
I believe that this is an image of a not-so-peaceful protest that was visited by the SWAT team or some sort of crowd control. I believe that the women on the right is peacefully protesting the arrival of the SWAT team by standing in front of them so they cannot move towards the other protestors.
Sabrina (Massachusetts )
I think there is a girl who is protesting against something and going against a SWAT team who is trying to stop her. She looks very calm and the there is many police officers that are in front of her. She is also holding an item that could be important to the meaning of the picture.
Logan Paul (32 Swindle Drive, Auburn MA)
Hi, my name is and personally, I think this is some sort of protest with a cast of guys playing some police officers, and featuring an African American Woman as a Antifa/Black Lives Matter protester. The woman seems to be presenting something to these officers, but maybe a sign of peace, but obviously this wasn't part oft he script. I'm very excited for this film and I hope that we see a trailer for this movie in the near future. Obviously this woman is in the LOGANG!!!
WHAP (US)
I think that the SWAT or FBI is taking away a lady. She is wearing a dress, so she probably wasn’t expecting this. They seem to be gentle and she seems calm, so it doesn’t seem like an emergency. They could be trying to protect her. You can see other people in the background just watching, along with the line of troopers.
Maria (No Thanks )
This looks like a picture of some sort of peaceful protest. I think the woman is trying to speak to the officers on behalf of other protestors. The fact that she looks calm and collected in the face of so many officers, shows that this is something she really believes in.
Emma WHAP (US)
I think that they are either arresting the woman or saving her from something to the right that we can’t see. It could be anything from a protest to a attack. Overall, it seems that the team is doing their job and she seems to be safe.
Brooke (New York Times )
I believe these two men on the SWAT are approaching this woman who is protesting against something. Clearly she is the only one there on that road with the rest of everyone being on the SWAT team. She has a box in her hands and has an extremely calm look on her face. These two men are probably trying to stop her from causing something because you can never assume she isn’t going to try something and or put someone or herself in danger. You can see in the distance people looking that way at her in whatever city this is. Without any knowledge on this picture, and considering this day and age in America the color of her skin could contribute to what is going on.
Elise R (Pennsylvania)
In the picture, I think that the woman is protesting. I think this because the road looks like a "highway" or a mainlined road. She might be risking her life to be protesting to get her point across and that is why the guards are there to prevent anything major.
bob (somewhere)
I think it is a proposal and it will be so romantic.
Brendan A (USA)
You are so right
Mr. Kan's Grade 5 class (Haimhausen, Germany)
In this picture, it looks like the police are closing the road just for her because the woman is walking in the street. We also think there is a protest happening on the same street. The police look like they will arrest her because she is not afraid to stand up to the police. We also wonder why there are so many police with heavy armor if there is only one woman in the road.
Zuocong Li (New York)
In the picture there is a women standing on the street, wearing a pretty dress, facing here are two armed men with guns. Behind the men there are lines of armed men, who are obviously the police. It looks like the men are trying to stop or intervene a protest, possibly a political protest, and it looks very serious and they are trying to stop any violence or harms from happening. The women in front of them looks like she is not afraid at all and she is speaking up her mind, or mind of others. She looks like the spokeman of another group of people, or possibly on her own, but the issue must be very serious that caught police's attention. The police does not harm her at all, they are simply standing against her and their gestures showing that they are still prepared to do anything if something bad happened. To me this looksl like police are not being violent to the people, but trying to protect the place in a rather appropriate way. And the woman is very brave that she is not afraid of doing what she wants. This showing that people have freedom of speaking up their mind only if they are not causing any violence, and the police are doing their job to keep safety of others.
Zoe P (Auburn )
Interesting thought, good job using context clues.
Arlene Vargas (Palmdale, CA)
in this picture, it looks as if there was a protest and that is why there were so many armed men & then a woman is showing that she wants to protest against them & she's showing that shes not afraid to stand up to anyone. What i see that makes me say that is the way they are approaching her.
KAYA PRATT❤️💫❤️ (11125 Northlake landing drive )
It seems as the SWAT is stopping a protest. The lady is probably introducing herself to them so they can settle the matter professionally. It looks Ike it is somewhere in, Europe? I'm not really sure. I can't really see the rest of the protest,so it could be a bomb found in an office building and the woman is the owner or something. The picture doesn't give much information so I can't be very precise.
Amber Catagnus (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
I think that the people in black are the Swat team trying to stop a protest, and this lady is brave enough to stand up to them. I think she might be the leader of the protest since she is the only one going up to them.
Ms. Nimeh's Class (Penfield,NY)
We infer that this is a SWAT team or the police in riot gear and the young woman is protesting. She appears to be confident, brave.calm, and serious. We infer that the woman might be protesting for equal rights for African-Americans and that it is happening in a city.
venny and javaughn (WA)
We think that one of the guys are purposing to the girl because she has a box on her hand.
Natalie and Kaylina (washinton)
We think that she is getting arrested because when you zoom in you could sort of see hand cuffs on her arms.
Aaron and Devon (Washington)
We think that someone on the police, F.B.I, or Swat is proposing to someone because the whole team is gathered around, and she is dressed and those are not real cuffs.
lucy and lindsey (washington)
We think she is being taken away because there is the swat team.
tony (WA)
I Think the guy is asking the girl to marry her because there is a box in her hand.
olivia jenny (washington )
we think that she is a secrete agent who is giving evedeins to the polices because she has something in her hand and she giving it to them.
Seriah and Hailey (washington)
we think that the girl is getting married from a guy from the S.W.A.T because we see the S.W.A.T guy holding a box.
Braelyn and Lenneah (washington)
We think that S.w.a.t team members are cheking this women for any weapons because there handcufs are on the polices belt not on her hands. Also she has her phone, watch, and white box? in her hand. (her valubles) because mabye she was in a shooting building because there are a lot of people in the back round confused. we think they are s.w.a.t team members because they have helmets on and armour on their body.
Aaron and Devon (Washington)
We think that the police is not arresting her because she does not have handcuffs on her and the Police,Swat, and F.B.I in front of her do not have handcuffs. In her hand and on her wrist is some car keys and a watch.
EddieG (NC)
I think that the man is part of SWAT and is not getting ready to arrest the woman. The man is actually going to ask the woman to marry him. That is why she looks so beautiful and he is walking toward her and holding her hand. I hope this is the truth.
Ryan S (Hudson, OH)
In this photo, this woman is submitting herself to arrest because of the protest that she was participating in. She stepped to close to the swat team which triggered them to check her for weapons. Although that makes sense, other people may say that these police officers are trying to save the lady, but that doesn't make sense because the lady is standing calmly and doesn't seem to be in peril. In conclusion, the lady is being arrested after she was protesting in the middle of the street.
Taisia (UA)
I think the policemen are trying to stop the woman and protect her from adanger.
Tsathoggua (San Francisco, CA)
Lawful arrest for obstruction of the roadway.
AidenK (Hudson,Ohio)
In this picture there is a women getting arrested for protesting. She is getting arrested because she has done something illegal in the protest. People might say that they are just checking her in case of something but that can´t be true because why else would the police be running to her. Also there are a line of police there which means that they are not only arresting her. that there is a protest. This is why there is a picture of a protester getting arrested.
Julia (Windham NH)
This image seems like a peaceful protest. This girl seems very brave and not scared. She is fighting for her rights.
Ryan Suydam (HMS)
In the picture, the lady is participating in a silent protest. As you can see, there are people in the background watching this lady. There is a team of cops that are stopping this lady because of her protest. I believe, that there are more people behind the lady, but she believes in what she is protesting against, so she is still walking, even though there is a team of cops blocking the road and stopping her to keep walking. Some may think, that the lady is being protected from the cops from somebody or something, but that doesn't make sense because there are people watching in the background. Also, the lady doesn't looked alarmed at all, if she was in trouble, or in danger of her life, I think she would be freaking out a little more and be more anxious. In conclusion, the lady is participating in a silent protest.
fanny mendoza (texas )
The girl is peacefully protesting. I think that because she isn't trying to fight back. Other people on the side are watching her.
Abbey Titmas (Hudson, Ohio)
In this picture a young woman seems to be peacefully protesting and about to be arrested. Because there are many police officers in a line and there is a woman who is standing there peacefully. She seems to be protesting because she is standing in a public area. It seems like she is trying to make a point in what she is doing. These two police officers that are going up to her seem to be arresting her, for what she is doing. This could also be that she is holding a bomb. Because the men seem to be heavily armed. And there seems to be something in her hand that can’t quite make out. But when I got closer it was nothing and that the police officers were just arresting her for protesting. In this picture a young woman seems to be peacefully protesting and about to be arrested.
Larissa (NH)
This picture is a young woman that looks like she is part of the black lives matter and is sticking up for he rights. She is a very brave person for doing this since many other people wouldn't even think of it. The police men look more scared then her and she is the one risking a lot of things, not the police officers.
Finn (Windham)
She defines brevery. She is looking fear in the eye and fighting back with the knolage that she can make a differance.
Eric (Auburn)
Bravery* Knowledge* Difference*
Owen (Windham NH)
I think she is part of the black lives matter. I say this because there is a lot of police men and so they are probably there for more than just one person. It looks like it is somewhere in the U.S, maybe D.C.
Nate (Windham NH )
This looks like a girl who is standing up for her rights. The officers look like they are about to come up and arrest her.
Aidan Finn (windham)
I think that this is bais to make cops look bad, there wouldn't be cops dressed like that if they didn't feel it was nessicery to wear protective gear, this is making cops look like oppressors that need to be stoped, it makes it looks like they are doing something wrong. This woman is not nessecerly the good guy, she may be peaceful but that does not mean she is innocent.
Ian (New Hampshire, USA)
I think that these swat units are arresting this woman for a connection to a crime. She is giving the officer keys, which may be to the car of a criminal. The officer will use these keys to stop a crime, thanks to this lady's cooperation.
dwsingrs8 (Perdition, NC)
Dispense with all this mysterious piffle. Simply tell us what happened.
Allen Moody (Palmdale Ca)
In this picture a young woman seems to be peacefully protesting and about to be arrested. what i see that makes me think that is all the police officers forming a line infront of her and the fact that she is about to be arrested. I can also see many officers who are there likely in response to protests or riots.
year9 (Berlin)
Year 9 from Berlin believes that she is part of the "black lives matter" demonstration. We are wondering whether she is giving something to the police men. She has no fear, it looks more like the police men are afraid.
Daniel Kauffman (Fairfax, VA)
The woman, a local student working part time as a valet attendant, has retrieved the officers' vehicle. She is handing the car keys to the owner, who thanks her urgently on their quest to find the nearest restroom.
GHZ 2 (Elizondo)
She is very brave!! She is fighting for her rights. She will remember this day forever.
Kailani Allen (Palmdale)
I see a african american woman being arrested by white policemen and a swat team behind him. There are other people in the backround watching everything happen. She isnt resistsing and is staying calm. She is protesting something and taking a stand for what she believes in.
Barb (Austin)
The police officer on the left and the woman appear to be exchanging something. Curiously, I don't see any officers with weapons in their hands. I had previously assumed they were holding guns.
Aubrey AK (juneau alaska)
From the looks of this picture it look like those are some cops going to grab a girl at a protest and the reason i think that is because the cops are all in protective gear which leads me to leave that there is a protest going on and i think that the girl is apart of the protest and she is trying to protest peacefully and possible stop all the violence that could ensue.
Tristan Bryant (Juneau Alaska)
There mite be a protest maybe at a collage campus or in a down town area
cassiousak (juneau)
I think this is a peaceful protest, I say that because she is just standing there not trying to hurt anyone, I also see that they are trying to take something out of her hand, I don't know what it is though.
Tayler (Juneau-Douglas High School)
It looks like they are trying to pull her away, or try to make her go back. This picture is very unclear on how it looks. So they might arrest her?
Rose Ak (jdhs)
it looks like she is trying to tell them something and sticking up for her self, or maybe another person, because she is on front of a huge swat tream maybe getting aressted it looks like she has some keys in her hand and the guy is taking them from her. maybe she is trying to comply with them at the most.
Festus (Juneau AK)
I would have to say it would look as if two police officers are about to do there job and arrest this young women, I'm not exactly sure why they are going to arrest her, but hey who am I to say what is okay and what is wrong.
Daniel JD (AK)
the police is going to zip tie the prson and put her in jail and she is trying to tell every police are mean people and she is trying to say black people mater.
joseph jd (juneau)
i see a lady protesting about rights see not afraid so she stading for her rights and she goinjg to get punish or get arrested or get pushed away she was a protester about brown
Alexis AK,JDHS (AK)
the chances this is a protest is unlikely, considering looking in the backround there isnt too much attention drawn. of people the woman seems very calm and approched by two swats or cops or some sort of security handing something over maybe they are checking if something is dangerous considering shes handing something over.
Tianna Ak (juenau)
This picture shows a lady getting arrested and standing up for something that she believes in. She does not look sacred she looks proud. I say this because there is alot of police and three people are coming up to her with The plastic cuffs
Adam (JDHS)
This is a photo of a young woman, possibly a protester, holding a police member's hand, who seems to be pretty uncomfortable. There doesn't seem to be many people in the background, or much of a rally going on, but the line of police in the back-left gives the sense that something is wrong.
Jason (JD)
In this picture, the woman looks like she is being arrested. She looks like she isn't a threat because the swat team doesn't have any guns up. She really looks like she's standing up for what she believes.
Olivieri (BRAZIL)
I see in the picture an asian girl and she is asking the peace !!! offering a white pigon to the police man during a big manifest. She wants the peace in the world!!
Kiel (Philippines )
The picture shows an African-American lady is going to be arrested by the SWAT police by protesting for her own rights and is taking a stand on what she believes in. It also shows how the SWAT is also afraid of her even though the SWAT is suited up with armor.
Harold Nelson (Olympia, WA)
It looks like a movie or TV scene being shot. The lineup and posture of the people in the background suggests this to me.
Riley Heryford (mexico)
this is posed by the media to make it seem like the cops are scared of her because she is black but in reality they will hopelfy listen politely.
Paola D (Palmdale Ca)
This picture shows a woman of color in front of a big group of the swat team. It looks as if she is not afraid and is taking a stand for what she believes in. What makes me believe that this is all happening is the fact that she is so up close to them with no sign of fear. Something else i see is how the swat looks more afraid than her
Antony Sedano (ChiefKeefsCrib)
The young lady is gonna get arrested by the police. The police look like they are reaching for her hands. Why did they arrest her and how.
Joe Perez (palmdale )
I see a black girl standing up to police men. Shes black and cause there is a lot of police brutality. There is a lot of police on a side creating a wall.
Michael Adams (Balmdale)
It seems to me that this African American lady is either protesting or being told to do something by the force. The look of her surroundings dont seem to show any danger but for all i know there could be a group behind her.
Erandy.R (Palmdale )
I see an African American women with two SWAT men, who seem to want to take her somewhere. Judging from her serious face, she doesn't seem to agree with these men. Maybe a protest? Then there's also many other SWAT men and citizens in the back drawing their attention to the young girl.
Betssy Rodriguez (Palmdale)
In this picture, you can see a African American woman walking up to the officers and it seems to me that she is trying to confront them about something. What you can see that would make you think this is the way she is looking at them and her hand gestures. Something else you can find is the other officers standing behind them lined up and the other people in the background watching her.
nellie p (hawaii)
i think in this picture the cops are trying to protect her from her doing something not so smart and she looks upset because shes not able to do what she wants. but shes trying to be calm.
Trinity Williams (Palmdale)
In this photo an young african american woman is being arrested. She looks as if she is protesting a cause and is standing her ground, she as this aura that looks as if she is standing up for whatever the cause is and keeping her head high and it goes unnoticed that she is being slient, and calm in the situation and she isnt making riot or adding chaos. People are just standing around the back and watching what happens to this young woman, along with the other policemen.
Bryan (Palmdale)
this picture the lady is being told to feel safe by the officers that are there to protect her. i say that because the picture is almost like expressing that they are telling her to stay calm. You can find the rest of the guys lined up to protect something from a war.
Angel N (California)
I believe this woman is protesting for a black lives matter cause. She is standing in front of the police as a sign of peace and giving them something.
Aaron Lanon (Palmdale)
On this picture the girl has something in her hand that she wants to give the police but the police is terrified with what she wants to do. She is also protesting about what she believes in and the police doesn’t accept what is going on and what she’s protesting about.
Isabel T (Palmdale)
In this picture i see an African American woman really close to the swat team as if she is confronting them. Even though there is many people of the swat team she does not look afraid of them. What makes me believe this is that even though they are armed she is still close to them. I can also see in the back the swat is lined up.
Mark H (Palmdale)
It looks like this girl is protesting for some cause and has no fear of walking up to the police. It also looks she is being taken to jail for protesting and be questioned.
Allison C (Palmdale)
What's going on in the picture is a woman who's been protesting and the police are trying to stop her from doing what she's doing. What I see that makes me think that is the officers trying to tell her something and it kind of looks like they're trying to push her away. Maybe they've been telling her that she is getting to close and that she should back off but she isn't. So, her resisting isn't making anything better, even if she's calmly protesting officers still need to do her job.
Bernardino A (Palmdale)
In the picture the lady is going towards the police officers or swat team. It appears that the two men are telling her to stay back and not to come any closer it may not be safe it looks like she doesn’t care and goes towards them anyways.
leandro (palmdale)
An African american woman is calmly approaching an anti-protest police squad, I can see that from the way she is standing still and her face expression is very calm. On the other hand the policemen look frantic in their body movements, the other policemen behind them look like a human wall.
Harley HHHS (Hanover Horton, Michigan)
In this picture I see an African American woman who is standing in front of police officers in the middle of a street. I notice that the woman is wearing flats and a dress. She has an Iphone in her hand and glasses on her face. The officers are look to be dressed in riot gear. They are equipped with pepper spray and zip tie handcuffs. I also noticed that there are people in the background who appear to be protesting. The police look like they are just waiting there in case they feel the need to step in.
andrea martinez (palmdale)
In this picture the girl is being led to something or somewhere by the police officers and she is refusing . I see them like trying to pull her away from the middle of the street to take her somewhere. The cops in the back are just watching not even helping.
carlos patino (palmdale)
i see an African american woman is in the middle of the street and being arrested by a swat team i feel that she is protesting because why else would she be in the middle of the street
Tomas Casco (Palmdale)
In this picture, it looks like a woman a part of a protest is being apprehended for some reason, probably for crossing a line that the law enforcement has set up. However, it doesn't look like she is resisting, but it looks more like she is doing this on purpose for some sort of "cause". It is probably a big protest, seeing how there is a line of police in the background.
Dina P (USA)
In this picture it is clear to see that there is some type of "peaceful" protest going on. I say "peaceful" because the young lady standing in front of the police men is clearly standing up to them but she is not wearing any kind of protection nor is she carrying any type of weapon. On the other hand there are police there armed and armored making it seem like they are not peaceful. I can also find a large amount of police men that out number the young lady. It looks like the young lady is also the only one there and only one not armored and armed.
Cassidy O (Palmdale,Ca)
1. An African American woman is holding what seems to be two officers or swat people hands. The picture clearly shows the African-American woman looking at the men with a serious face and the two men look concerned. There are many more SWAT people behind the two SWAT who are interacting with the African-American lady and the attention is to the lady and the SWAT men.
Thomas Hayden (Dallas)
I see the Dragon Queen of Sheba, First of Her Name, the Untanned, Breaker of Stereotypes, Mother of Equality, Khalessi of the Great Red Sea, being protected by her army of of Unsullied soldiers.
DC (desk)
The woman seems to be the one in charge. I see her as a picture of studied calm. Her feet are planted, her posture is attentive. It looks as if she may be holding something out to the officers, perhaps giving them direction. The officers' feet are active. I can't tell if they are arriving or leaving.
Dajour Lewis (Palmdale)
In this picture you can see that the woman was at first approached by the two policemen She is standing her ground with a firm, straight face determined to prove her point with seems to have something to do with the crime rate of African Americans. Instead of being violent she's showing what she believes in in a peaceful way.
sergio villatoro (palmdale)
An African american woman is calmly approaching an anti-protest police squad, I can see that from the way she is standing still and her face expression is very calm. On the other hand the policemen look frantic in their body movements, the other policemen behind them look like a human wall.
kamaya Davis (Palmdale)
she looks like very calm in this picture , she is protesting against the government or for what she believe in . So the police are trying to stop her from doing so.
Brianna Marie Ortega (Palmdale CA)
I think the cops are trying to tell her to do the ri8ght thing because she is doing the wrong thing. I see the cops grabbing the girls hand and pulling her back. I can find the other people being noisy.
Leo Madrid (Palmdale)
i see in the picture a colored women protesting. Two police officers are confronting her. it looks like she is stopping the police from going somewhere. there is people in the back watching.
Alejandro Lopez (Palmdale)
In this picture the lady is being told to feel safe by the officers that are there to protect her. i say that because the picture is almost like expressing that they are telling her to stay calm. You can find the rest of the guys lined up to protect something from a war.
Demetrius Freeman (Palmdale)
From this picture is a woman in a long dress who is being confronted by a security force. Her demeanor is calm and relaxed as the officers approach her. By her eyes being closed and her standing up straight it shows that she isn't worried about what is going on around her. In front of her is a line of police men either guarding or preventing something. The woman seems to be going against what the law enforcement want and rush her for her actions.
Brandon (Palmdale)
I see a African American women peacefully protesting, but the police seem to see her as a threat, as they back up suddenly.
renee gonzalez (palmdale )
I think that in the picture the women is standing up to them. Me seeing the cops all behind the other two that are up next to the women. There is plenty of cops with just one women that are trying the prevent something from happening
Katherine Flores (Palmdale)
In this photo a young woman is standing up against the police officers in peace. She is just standing there not doing anything while three police officers run up to her. There are just other people and other officers watching as the three officers run up to her I assume to arrest her.
Amy (Palmdale)
In this picture I see a young women standing up to the policemen and protesting against them in a more peaceful way.
Diego (palmdale)
In this picture to me it seems like there is a colored female maybe protesting . She is about to get stopped by two swat team soldiers . There is a whole group of the swat behind them and looks like there is something wrong and she’s just standing there and doesn’t want to get out of the way . There’s people in the background just watching and it seems like the swat members are trying to calm her down .
Nick Martinez (Palmdale)
I see a young African American women who seems like she is protesting some cause. It looks like she might be interviewing them but the police do not want to be interviewed and they are running back.
Johannean Ceballos (Palmdale)
I see an African-American woman approaching the police in a peaceful manner while the policemen are reacting to her as if she were hostile or a danger to their lives. The reason that I say that is that she doesn't seem to have the face of hostility while the police looked worried and shocked. You can notice that they still have the worried expression while they are in complete armor which can protect from many things while the girl isn't in anything but a free-flowing dress with minimalist shoes on.
Ismael Hernandez (California )
In this photo I see a woman, who looks of African-American decent, standing firmly while two police officers are presuming towards her. The woman seems to be protesting against something. Many police officers are seen towards the back which I assume that many are protesting against an issue and she is not alone.
Alejandro Marentes (Palmdale )
In this picture I see a young African American women problaby protesting something that she believes isn't right. She is being approached by two Riot Squad officers.
Adrian Perez (California)
The girl is probably telling the officers to open the closed street because she has to go to an event on that street.
Abdullah Mumtaz (Knight High School)
I see a women who looks of African-American descent, who seems to be calming the hostility of the police force. There must be a big situation going on, showing the large group of police officers in the back. Since it's blockaded off, there must be a protest going on
Victor Cuevas (California)
I see a young African American woman that is standing her ground against some cops. She seems to be protesting something, something they don't agree with so it looks like she is going to be arrested. But nonetheless she continues to stand her ground, unmoved by the threat that continues towards her.
Mike Padilla (Palmdale)
In this picture, it looks like two riot squad members are coming forward, to a young, fearless, African American women who is some what protesting just by, standing on the street. This photo gives me the idea that the riot squad members are trying to get her of the street. It also looks like she is the only one protesting.
Anthony Romero (palmdale)
From this picture im seeing a young African American trying to talk to the police and she seems calm even though the cops are coming at her She still remains calm.
Brittany (Palmdale)
In this picture i see a young woman not moving from her spot even though two police officers approach her. I think that she is protesting about something and she will not move.

i think that the police man are trying to keep her from her house because there is a killer in her house.but she is the gov't of the city.
Cierra Steemer (California)
In this picture you can see that the woman was at first approached by the two policemen. It seems that the woman said or did something to make the two policemen retreat. She is standing her ground with a firm, straight face determined to prove her point. This picture screams out to me that she is standing up for civil rights and the hate crimes that have been happening through out the globe but instead of doing this with violence she doing it in a peaceful way.
Solomon (Palmdale )
I see a young African-American woman standing her ground and protesting against the police.
Gerardo Salazar (Palmdale)
In this photo I think a young women is protesting and the police are about to move her out the way. I think she is standing up for civil rights. It seems that its infront of a school and the protesting is peaceful and the police are making a big deal.
Amya Kennon (California)
The police is trying to arrest the girl because she is standing up for herself and her fellow people. The reason why i say this is because she is just standing there not doing anything and the police is just coming to arrest her or strain her. I can see that there is some type of riot going on, the people is just trying to stand up for them self, protesting.
ericka johnson (pete knight high school ms.wattons class)
i see a young black girl , being ran away from by a pair of police, that I assume she is peacefully protesting for a major issue. I feel like she is trying to get answers out of someone or something. But the people which are the police are refusing because of a certain cause. They also probably dont want problems so thats why they are backing up.
Saint Sebby (a place w/ joshua trees)
In this picture we can see a women being approached by two policemen. She seems to have been standing in her position for a while now. I think she may be protesting and is the one or perhaps the only one to have been protesting something. Her phone is in her hand, she has what aooears to be keys in the other hand, and her watch is faced upwards towards her despite her having the top of her forepointing downward. This suggests that she did this intentionally possibly to track the amount of time she has been protesting or to protest a specific event to happen.
Brittany Burdick (California)
I see a young African-American woman, being engulfed by a pair of police, that I assume she is peacefully protesting for a major issue. For the reason she looks as if she is being arrested, there might have been some vandalism or civil disobedience at the protest. Since there is such a large amount of police, the protest might have involved an abundant of people and the woman just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and maybe never did an act that requires her being arrested.
Nessa (L.A)
What seems to be happening in this photo is that this young women had approached these officers peacefully during some type of call to resist. The event they are forced to stop in unknown as of now , however there are many officers meaning it might have been large. There are also many other people looking on in the background. This piece does not look to be a violent one but a settled and tame one.
Dabin L (Guadalajara)
There are many protectors from the government and two of them are against a woman. I think it's some kind of protesting because whenever there's a protest going on, those protectors come along to protect them.
Andrew (California)
It looks like the woman in the photo was trying to take a picture or record because her phone is out, and the police are trying to stop her. There are a lot of police in riot gear, which means there is something going on and they have been called to control the situation. There does not appear to be any violence, and everyone in the picture seems calm.
Lo (Mexico)
An African American woman passively standing in front of policemen who are geared for riot protection. She is the only one that is not holding a weapon but the policemen seem to be scared of her since they seem to be backing up away from her or whatever they are looking at behind her.
Ana Paula (Guadalajara, Mexico)
I believe this woman is protesting for black lives. She is standing in front of the police as a sign of peace, since she is not protesting with violence. I also believe she's being arrested, since you can see the second police holding her hand.
Just another person (NY, NY)
The 2 guys are moving backwards, their center of gravity is behind them, so they are moving forwards. There are only a few people in the background. They are not worried. They are watching idly. Where in the world could there be a protest without angry people? If she was in trouble or being threatened, the would be people next to her or the men would be stopping them from coming forward. She is standing straight, with no fear. She has her phone in one hand, so she is not taping the incident, which everyone does now. Not sure what is in her left hand, seems like car keys ???? Across the back of her hair is a white hair/cord, is it a mike? Is she on a set? Movie or music video? She is too composed for something nefarious to be happening.
natalia obama (Californias)
In the picture and African American women is being approached by riot police during the Baton Rouge protest making her stand against police brutality. I know what this picture is about because I watch the news everyday and keep informed of what's happening in my country.
Nataly Sanchez (Palmdale CA)
I believe this women was protesting, and with protest comes a lot of cops, and even the SWAT team to "protect" whatever one is fighting for. As we can see the women approaches the police and of course the first thing they did was run up to her and try to stop her from what they believe is "her attacking the police" when in reality the women was either going up there to ask a question or to stand up for her protest.
Jay (Nebraska)
In this picture, I see a calm black woman who is peacefully protesting for a cause. The men in the picture are suited in full gear, as if they are looking for conflict. I can also concur that the woman is mature enough to approach the cops in a mannered way because she knows what the consequences may be if something was to go out of control.
Gabriel (China )
In this picture, I see a young lady protesting to the police by going infront of them without hesitation. I say this because she is standing straight up without movement holding her ground. I see this also because there are many police behind behind the two main officers. this shows there is a threat. which means there was probably something greater that the girl did not account for yet she is still holding her ground.
Netzi (palmdale)
I see an African american women approaching the police in guard very politely and calm. It seems like the police are ready to talk to her in warning to leave the area. It also seems like it can be a protest or a riot. I see a women's face and body language to make me say that she is approaching in a calm manner. Also the policemen body gestures can be believed that they are warning her to leave by the way the guy to the right of her has his hand and also the guy to the left of the woman has his hands as well which makes it seems like to what i recently said. I can find more policemen standing in formation behind the two policemen and the women. Also the women is dressed nicely and she is the only one approaching the policemen while you can see other people doing their own thing in the background.
Israel (China)
In this picture I see a young lady who is standing up to police in riot gear. It seems she has been standing there for a long time because she had the watch facing her keeping track of time. She doesn’t seem like a threat so the police aren’t doing anything. It looks like they’re on a campus but why are there so many police in armor?
I KNOW IMRIght (virginia)
THEIR HAND SHAKI'N
Sarah Combs (VA)
I believe she is being rescued. Maybe she was a hostage in a terrorist attack. The fact that it doesn't look like she's being arrested, I don't believe it's a protest. Also, why would there be so many cops, and in SWAT gear? Anything is possible in this scenario.
Ryan (North Korea)
I see an African American woman dressed nicely, being approached by police in riot control gear. I'm guessing she is protesting or rioting about a big issue because their wouldn't be that many policemen dressed in riot gear. I also see people in the background watching and taking pictures, so for me it's hard to tell exactly whats going on. I also see her by herself and she's not afraid of the police men so It's hard to tell if she is protesting or not.
PINK (nyc)
As we can see in the picture, there are some people without wearing helmet behind the group of polices which means that there couldn't be some accidents. Also, we can find that surface of the watch is facing up and the band is loose. It means that she has kept the gesture for a certain time and she needs to look at the time all the time. The polices don't touch her in that they don't have enough reason to prevent her. I think she may be a journalist and has some important discovers or questions.
Bhavana Sawarkar (New York)
I think the picture depicts that the team of cops are trying to protect the women standing in the middle of the road. As we can see she wants to get interfere in the incident which is supossed to be happend over the other part of the cops. I can also see their are some people in the foreground standing nearby the tree to see what is happening their and taking picture using their cameras. She is trying to be calm here.
Ms. Giddings Class (Northport, Maine)
Peaceful Protest canceled by military, but one girl decided to stay. We think this because of the people in the background, including a cameraman, a lady having a picnic, and a person with a sign, and they all seem to be watching the events before them unfold. We also think that this is a protest because the swat is in a line, blocking the road/path. At first we decided that it was a bomb attack or somewhat, but then we decided against it.
Mohammed (NY)
After looking in a very long time at this picture, i think this woman is a leader of a group who is doing rotation because the way what the police are wearing and how calm this woman is standing. Moreover, lots of people take shoots by their camera. so it's kind of peaceful rotation
Nick (Virginia)
This lady is protesting and two officers break lines to arrest her, she takes the arrest peacefully.
Liz (Va)
I think the woman in this picture is protesting. I think this because it does not look like she wants to move. The men in this picture look like they are trying to create peace with her, based on their body movement and hand gestures. I think she is also very stubborn because they have a lot of people there to just stop her. I believe she is very stubborn, and not wiling to change her mind based on her facial expression.
Chef Boyarde (space)
A peaceful protest
LIT PINEAPPLES (YOUR NOSE)

shikah (NYC)
In the picture there is a lot of police officers and only one African american women who is co calmly a passively protesting . In the background, There's also people with cameras . I think this is one of the protests that happened on the past few years in the U.S .
Branden Jenkins (Woodstock, VA)
The woman in the dress might be protesting, and the police are lining up so the other protesters can't pass. She believes in what she is doing so she keeps walking. The police puts handcuffs on the woman because she would not stop walking.
Sonal (NYC)
A woman is in the middle, wearing a dress ,standing still and she has fearless confidence. I think its a protest because of the police team and a man holding a sign in the back and it looks like she is trying to do it peacefully rather than being violent.
Kai (NYC)
The woman look like very peace. She do not afraid the police. There are so many polices with weapon but the woman still can stop them. It is mean there are another things outside the photo and maybe we can not see them. This activity look like many important. It is a very large activity so the government need to let so many police on the street. The police look like a little shine to catch the woman with unknown reason.
Prakruti Sayam (new york)
The girl who is standing very calmly is trying to protest something and the officer came to move out of the way she was trying to, she could be risking her life and others by standing in the street so maybe the men are trying to get her out of the street, and get her to a safe spot.
Nouf (Manhattan)
I think she is in the protest situation about something related to the country and that thing is a big issue. In other hand, maybe they are filming a short video or a short movie because there are a group of people under the tree hold cameras.
Lilian (ny)
Two police men with armor is running to a well-dressed women. There is no emotion on the woman's face. In the background of the picture some people are taking picture or video to these three people by professional camera. I suppose they are journalists. In the left of the picture, there are so many polices, and all of them wear armor. I believe these two polices are trying to stop this women for protesting.
Jinghan Li (New York)
The lady is standing on the middle of the road, those police are trying to drag her to somewhere...
Brooke (PMMS)
I think that the picture is from an African American rights movement. I think that the women in the picture is trying to get to the police squad. I think that they are trying to arrest her, but she is staying calm.
Daniel (new york)
In my opinion, they are making a movie. Because those police don't take ant guns or weapon and in far of this picture, there are some people are looking them. They look like very clam and some guys are use cameras taking pictures. i think they just pass this place and take a look. Those polices and this woman are actors for a movie.
Victoria (New york)
This picture caught my attention. On the one hand, we see a very calm and impassive young woman who stands in front of many police officers. She seems without fear. On the second hand, we see two police officers who try to stop her or they try to put themselves between the young black woman and the rest of the police. In my opinion she's striking peacefully and protests without violence. Perhaps they try to protect her or evacuate her from her striking spot.
sea bass (somewhere)
I think that the reason that the lady is in the middle is because she is probably being a rebel. Or she is probably trying to make a stand about something. The people in the background are probably amazed by what she is doing.
Frank (NYC)
To be honest, this picture is confusing. In my opinion, maybe the woman is a leader of a organization for protect the black people's rights and she is leading a demonstration in this picture. The two police officers are coming to arrest her.
Meet Patel (New York,NY)
In the picture, women looks courageous as she is doing some right thing to support what is right. But from the faces of police officer try to clear the place and keep away from the road.
qianyun Wen (NEW YORK)
may be the woman is symbol for a organization. In order to protest some behavior, she walks to a group of the policemen without weapon. The two policemen just tell her to stop and to leave, not hurt her.
Bailey (Virginia )
I think that she is a leader of some sort of protest. She was probably going somewhere she wasn't suppose to because there is a bunch of police in a line which looks like they are blocking it.
Rebecca (Woodstock)
I notice that a girl might be handcuffed by police officers. I think that she might be handcuffed because she was rioting. I also think that she was arrested when rioting because the cops are wearing gear that they usually wear when they are dealing with protesting/rioting.
Lina (New York)
In this picture, there is a woman who is standing in front of a group of cops. She wears a long and beautiful dress. It looks like taking a movie. The woman feels very clam and pace. And, the cops want to walk back. I do not know why the cops afraid of this woman.
Nirav Jadav (New York)
I think that there is a rebellion going on in that area. That's why there are so many of the guards. And that the girl is trying to communicate with the police men. She is trying to get out and get to a safer place for her self. She wearing formal dress that describe she is the volunteer of something.
Jaimin Prajapati (new york)
i think there is a swat team trying to stop the women. she is like a leader very calm and just walking in her protest. may be there are lots of people behind her in her protest and that is going to make a huge problem to the country. swat teams are without ammunition as it is like non violence protest. this could be a like an amplification for a single person they might see danger.
Jerry (NYIT)
the woman looks calm and feel serious. She looks like protesting against policemen. it happened in a big university (wide roads and grass). policemen are upset about the women. however, the women seems like no threat. the information is too little.
Samuel J (Woodstock VA)
Well, I can see that the woman looks Hispanic, and that the Police are White. You may also notice the handcuffs on the woman's wrists, which clearly shows that she is getting arrested for some reason. The fact that the police and the woman are both different races heavily leans toward the fact that she is protesting etc.
Emma (Edinburg, Virginia)
Looks like there is like a riot and the cops are running up to the girl. I'm not sure why but they are.
Keeyarra (Virginia)
My thoughts on this page is that a woman was being held against some bad person and she has bombs one her so the this team is disabling it, as the person is watching, they are going to blow up everyone that is near, people are also watching in the back having no clue of what is going one.
Christian (Virginia)
It looks like the police are handcuffing this lady. Maybe she is just giving herself up to the police because of a crime she's done. I have no idea what else is going on;
Emily Funkhouser (Virginia)
There is an African American woman standing in the middle of the road, wearing a dress. In front of her are two policemen wearing protective gear, and behind them is a wall of men. One of the men in front of her is holding her hand and holding the other up in front of her. I think that she is protesting or something.
luiz lopez (Virginia)
It looks like a girl is protesting.
Ashton (North Korea)
It looks like she is being arrested for protesting, but it may also be that they were shooting something because I see cameras in the background.
liam (virginia)
the police don't want the people to go through their barricade because they don't want the people to leave the location.
venkata mounik (new york)
she looks like very calm in this picture. So that i'm thinking like she is protesting against the government and trying to block the road. so police men are trying to clear the way so they are trying to grab her hands to move him from the road.
Sir Doge (Antartica)
Looks like that one Pepsi commercial with Kendall Jenner.
Carlos ruiz (Ms. Jeffcoat's classroom)
I think a person in the middle of a problem came to talk to the police and the reaction they had was as racist,I also think that they want the woman to leave the place
Christian Hernandez (Jeffcoat room)
polices are going to the girl to get her because she has somthing there is a a girl and polices there is a whole military
Jacqueline (Ms. Jeffcoat´s classroom)
In this picture I can see a lot of policemen, a young lady and some spectators. It seems like she is trying to talk to the policemen and it also looks like they are a little scared of her by the way they are standing. It can also be that the policemen are teaching her some self defense. I can also see that people are taking pictures with their cameras.
Courtney (Ms. Jeffcoat's room)
In this picture it looks like there might be a riot or protest going on. I say that because it looks like there is a bunch of riot police in the background, it looks like people are taking pictures near the tree. It also looks like the girl is walking towards the riot police that's why they are standing in a certain way. it also looks like the girl is holding something in her hands. I also noticed that it looks like people are holding up signs in the background, and people are sitting down as if protesting something.
luis (Mr. jeffcoat)
it looks like she is going to give her self up.she is to clam to be protesting. That there are other mans in the background lining up if something goes wrong.
Ivan C (Mrs jeffcoats room)
in this picture i see a girl standing with riot control coming near her. i see her standing calm with policeman coming to her and others watching it go on. I also see people in the background who look calm.
Nathan (Ms. Jeffcoats room)
she is giving herself up to the police up, because she did something in her past and the police were looking for her and she decided to give up.
Javier (North Carolina)
I believe that the lady is giving up herself to the police or either that the cops are moving her out the way. She so calm that she doesn't really care what going on and they cops are just rushing toward her. I see bystander on the the side walk just watching and taking photos.
Lacey w (North carolina)
There is a woman that is getting arrested, she is surrendering herself to the police because of something that she did wrong. There are a bunch of police around her, and two police men are confronting her and, there is a woman just standing there with her hands kind of out. The women is in formal attire, there is a big building in the background, and people in the background that are watching what is going on.
jhovani (Ms.jeffcoat room)
I think its a woman who is letting herself be arrested
Tyler Sanderson (North Carolina)
In this picture I see a woman that may or may not be protesting against something. There also seems to be some sort of armed forces in the photo. I say this because there is a gun holster with a firearm on the the legs of the people opposing the woman. I also see that this photo was taken in a commercial area of the city.
Julieta V. (Mexico)
I notice that the street is somewhat empty, but the people that are there are all observing and many have cameras. I also notice that none of the police men are trying to attack, and they are not standing in a position where they seem to be defending or attacking anything. They are all just standing calmly. I don't know what's going on but I don't think that this is a protest, because everyone seems to be calm and quiet and the woman seems to be on her own.
Luis (Mexico)
This woman is protesting against the police that they should respect them and she confronts the police. She got arrested because she insulted or threw something that affected the policemen. She wanted to show her son that she will fight for his freedom and rights and that black people should be treated the same as a white people. The policemen wore riot gear because they were trying to stop the protest and they were protecting them selfs from the city.
Huanhuan Chen (NY)
They are look like stretching something on the woman's hands. She looks so calm and the people on the background are using phones to record this.
Gerardo (Ms. Jeffcoat's)
This person is demonstrating peacefully and this makes me think that there are many ways to manifest without having to go to violence and that this is a good thing since there would be no victims affected. this makes the society improve and there are superficial changes.
Carlos (jeffcoat room)
I feel like she is protesting because she look so she wants peace. The guys with the armor is trying to keep her away from an area. The people in the back are just looking at her like something is wrong.
Diana Arrieta (Ms. Jaffcoat's clasroom)
There are many policemen there and there are two with a woman, the woman is with the police, they will help the woman because she sees that she has something in her hand could be a bomb, but she looks calm.
Maribel (Ms.jeffcoat)
That there is a woman in the middle. because she is wearing a dress and maybe she is going to say something important. There are polices in the back
Kalob (Rocky Point, NC)
I think that there is a protestor being handcuffed in this picture. I say this because they have handcuffs and are grabbing the womans hand. The policemen are also wearing riot control gear.
Destiny (NC)
A women is walking and a bunch of cops are attacking her. She is walking up to a line of cops and a couple of them are going to grab her. No i can not find anything more.
Angel G (North Carolina)
What is going on in this picture looks like there is a lady about to be arrested What do i see that makes me say that is there is a lady walking into a crowed of police man and they look about to take her What more can I find I can see that there are other people in the background and there is a company business
Ricardo Sahagun Orozco (Guadalajara)
I think that the girl was in a hostage situation and she has just been rescued. I think that because I see many policemen around the girl. Also, they are trying to help her and nor arrest her. Another thing we can find out is what is actually going on in the picture.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
I wanted to thank you all for looking so deeply at this picture, and for participating in today's discussion! I so appreciate the diverse perspectives I heard today that grappled with the ambiguity of this image, and I saw some respectful conversations happening as people commented on others' responses. There is still so much curiosity about what is going on here! Although I am signing off now, I invite you all to keep looking at this picture, listening to others' thoughts, and considering what more we can find. Remember to continue asking yourself, "what did I see in the image that made me say that?" And don't forget to check back this Thursday in order to find out more about this picture. Thanks again, and we will see you online next Monday!
Jamia Chen (Colorado Springs)
In this picture you see a group of police men, people in the background taking photos, and a nicely dressed African American women alone, handing something to the police men. I believe that this is a photo shoot trying build meaning between African American and cops to add to the black lives matter movement, creating a since of symbolism. So its like the women is wanting peaceful protest. The two police men are backing away from the women as they are accepting something from her hand. She has a look of fearless confidence. The police men could be preparing for a riot since they have bats and shields with of course lots of armor. This could also be a slight over exaggeration for a single person they might see as dangerous.
Emily (Mexico)
Its a girl protesting for something by just walking up to the swat team. It doesn't look like they're arresting her, just wanting her to stand back. I think its a protest because of the swat team and a man holding a sign in the back. What she's doing must be important considering a photographer in the background too. I think this is happening in the United States because of the diversity of people in the picture.
Esteban G (Guadalajara)
What I think that is happening on this picture is that this women is trying to talk with the police so they can have peace in a protest.Something else that I See is people beside a tree watching what is happening. I think that the two police mans in are trying to make the women go away.
Riley's Rabble Rousers (Duluth, MN)
We think this is a picture of a huge drug bust with an undercover cop. The SWAT team is dressed in full riot gear, which they usually wear in TV shows when there's a drug bust. The woman is acting cool and calm despite being arrested, which makes us think she is an undercover cop. They're arresting the undercover cop as an excuse to bust into the drug house.
Rafael (J)
I believe that a group of people are filming a movie or video. Just because the "police" don't have any real badges or number or anything and at the back near the building you can see normal people with cameras. I think Im like 100 percent wrong but I'll take the risk.
Ariel A (Classroom)
I think that she is going to say something important. I think this because I see the officers putting her in the middle of the crowd. Also because she has a dress on and usually when someone is going to present something they usually look formal.
Alondra F. (Niles)
I think the police are arresting her?
Michael M (Niles)
I that someone is going to propose in this picture. I think that because in the picture it shows that someone is holding her hand and looking at her. Another reason i think that because shes also in a nice looking dress with no marks or anything that shw she might have been trying to run away or something as such. She also looks very calm in the photo.
Rania S. (Niles)
I think that they are protesting. I think this because it looks like she is trying to do it peacefully, rather than being violent.
stephanie (gemini junior high)
i think this is a protest, and the swat are arresting her.
Keeyarra (Virginia)
I don't think the swat would arrest her for protesting
Larsa Y (Chicago)
I think that this is some type of protest. There is a girl standing in front of cops and they might be blocking some type of building or blocking another group of people. In the background of the picture it looks like there are some other people standing in the back. I think they are also part of the protest.
Tim Olin Mundis (Somewhere)
I think its a girl that did some serious crimes and it looks like she gave up ad just got arrested
Alex Kielbasa (Illinois)
i think what's happening is women trying to have peace with the police. and another thing was that there is a protest. and another thing was try not resist assert and holding the officers hand. and last thing is that people are watching it happened.
Talin Usefyan (Illinois)
I think a girl is protesting for something and i think this because it looks like shes in some place shes not supposed to be. I think The men in the black clothing are trying to arrest her because there about to attack her.
Tomek Grzybowski (Illinois)
There is some type of protest happening and she isn't submitting peacefully
William C (LCMS)
in this picture, two men in swat gear are walking towards the teenager in a dress. i know this because i see a girl standing in front of the two men in swat gear. it looks like the girl is holding something in her hand. i know this because if you zoom in on her hand you can see some kind of a white object. i can see there is a lot of men in swat gear behind the two men that are near the teenager . i know this because there is a bunch of men lined up. based on the evidence, she is giving something to the two men.
Mandar P (school man)
the police are tryna steal the girl because I think she needs to be protected.
Adam T (Niles, Illinois)
I think that the woman is in a non violent/peaceful protest. I think this because I see the woman isn't attacking the swat members and the swat isn't attacking her either. This shows me that it is non-violent because nobody is attacking each other. Also there are more swat members in front of the woman which could mean they are there in case the protest goes violent.
Dasany (Niles)
I think that this is some type of protest and the lady walking is the only one brave enough to step up for what is right. I think this because the lady is standing there staring at the police li8ke she wants to interfere with this and she wants to stand up for what is right. That's what I think this picture is about.
Alex D (Niles)
I think that the thing on the womens wrist is some kind of bomb. The police officers might be tryng to defuse it. So I think its a bomb squad. So the bomb sqaud are trying to get the bomb off the ladys wrist.
kira (LCMS)
In this photo i can see that there is two men in all back high tech suits with a helmet covering their faces. in front of them there is a girl holding her hands out. Behind them there is a wall of them same type of men maybe even armed with weapons. There could have been a riot before this but we will never know.
Gianna (LCMS)
This picture looks like there is some type of protection going on here. The people in uniform look they are building a wall for her. She might need to be blocked for a certain reason. This happens when there is someone important trying to get through a group of people. The other option could be some type riot or protest. This women could be in danger or she could be dangerous. These men dressed in uniform have weapons and all of their protective gear on. They could be using it to shield them or the woman. She is wearing no protective gear so she is most likely relying on them.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thank you @Gianna for your comment! I appreciate that you are considering multiple perspectives in your response - you're wondering if the armed figures are protecting the woman from danger or if they are accosting the woman because she might present danger herself. What do you see that makes you say she might be dangerous? What do you see that makes you say she might be in danger? Great job remaining open to different interpretations, @Gianna!
Kelly G (illinois)
We see men in riot gear. It looks like they are making a wall. We see zip-ties which makes us think that there are more people behind this woman. The woman looks calm and is dressed in formal wear. We wonder if this is a picture of a conflict between white supremacist and counter-protestors.
Jenna (LCMS)
In this photo it looks like the police are trying to protect the girl from something. I know this because the policeman look like they are worried and are trying to help her. I also see something in her hand that the policeman are trying to get. I know this because the policemen look nervous to get whatever is in her hand. It also looks like something is planned. I know this because the policeman are all standing in a straight line are trying to get the lady away from whatever is happening. Based on my evidence this could be a protest and the girl is making a point about something.
Diego (LCMS)
There are cops in the back with protective gear as if there is a riot going on. There is a a young black girl that is in front of two cops. This is on the news because there are cameras to the side
Jimmy (LCMS)
It looks like this lady is trying to stop these police officers. I know this because the lady kind of has her hands out stopping the officers in their tracks. The lady looks like she is trying to protect someone. It also looks like these police officers may be responding to some sort of major emergency. I know this because they have their guns out, wearing protective gear, and masks over their face. The lady could be showing them were the emergency is.
Sebastian P. (Illinios)
I think that swat people are doing something to the girl that she is fine with. I think this because I see people in armour and a girl and the girl is just standing there, doing something with her hands. This shows me that the girl doesn't know or care what is happening.
Maggie (LCMS)
In this photo it looks like there is some type of a protest. I think this because there is a line of cops and 2 other cops that are really close to the lady. I think that the lady is trying to stand up for something that she believes in because everyone else is just watching and she is up close near the cops. I also think that the cops are going to arrest her because they are carrying zip ties which are used to arrest someone when they don't have proper hand cuffs. It looks like the one cop is grabbing her hand so it looks like he is about to arrest her. I think this protest was serious and a big deal since there is a picture of it and some people in the background look like they are taking photos. Based on the evidence there is some sort of a protest going on where a girl is standing up for what she believes in.
Jay (LCMS)
It looks like the girl is getting help from the swat team. It looks like that because they don't have handcuffs out. They ran out with there hands out looking at her. She had stuff in her hands that looked like a bag of ice. She could be hurt. There could be a riot because there is a swat team.
caleb (LCMS)
in this picture i see a women is formal wear. it looks like an office building to the right of them and maybe she works there and that's why she is dressed up. in front of her is see people in swat gear and i think that something has happened at or in the area they are at. by the way the ladies hands are i think she is trying to get them to leave and it almost looks like she is trying to make a deal. i see one of the men with a book bag on and maybe that's hers and she is trying to get it back from them. on both of the police officers they have zip ties they could be using them to tie people up if they are attacking them.
Oscar (San Antonio)
the girl is giving them something and there are a lot of people they are all suited up and they look look the swat team
Ricardo (LCMS )
This picture looks like a protest for women's rights. I know this because their are cops lined in protected gear. I can also claim that this is taking place in a foreign country. i know this because woman have the same rights as men in America. My third claim is that the policemen are trying to protect this woman. I know this because they didn't pull a weapon out or anything harming. I also know this because the people in the back aren't ready.
Hacker boi Moe (des plaines)
its sum sortt of protest
Kelly G (illinois)
the girl is a witch and the guards have to try and catch her and she is using her magic to keep them away.
Sydney (LCMS)
This woman is at a riot or protest. I know this because the men are in riot gear. They are at a peaceful protest and there are more people behind the woman. I know this because there is no violence, the man are only making a wall. The men are trying to secure the protesters in one place. I know this because the men are making a barrier keeping the protesters back. The woman is trying to prove a point. I know this because of the way the woman is standing, with confidant yet peaceful.
Victoria T (a classroom)
a protest
Jackson S. (FFCHS)
Obviously whats going on here right now is a riot as the riot police are there making a line making sure nobody gets passed, this could be the Portland riots or another riot all together. Also i don't know what the woman is doing but the two riot officers are seeming to talk to here and are backing up. The woman may be giving them something or another thing all together what ever it is.
Emily (LCMS)
Claim 1: I see men in full gear. I know this because when you look on the picture you see police in full uniform. It looks like they are trying to stop the woman. I know this because they are making a wall in the back and there are two police guards stopping her. The woman may of been at a nice place. I know this because she has a formal clothing on. Based on the evidence, there is a conflict between the police and the woman
Tamalei Sharp (Souderton)
currently going on in this picture is a woman standing in form of police probably protesting for rights or unfair treatment. I say that causes I have seen events like this on the news where the police are dressed like they are. I can also see that the women do not look happy and there is a wall of officers.
jessica abdelmalak (school )
this picture looks like the policemen were talking something with her, and it looks like they put zip ties on her wrists because maybe there's more people behind her.
miguel dionne (PA)
So I think that there is a rebelian going on in that area. ( that's why there are so many of the guards). And that the girl is trying to communicate with the police men. Or she is trying to get out and get to a safer place for her self
Rostyk (LCMS)
It looks like a small protest verses a large amount of SWATS. I know this because it shows that there are many security type people. Also i think that the young lady wants to show that girls are also strong. I know this because she is the only person(a lady) that is in the small protest. It also look like the security people are trying to stop her but she refuses. I know this because the security people are backing up and the young lady has a serious face. Based on the evidence, the young lady is trying to get her point to the security people or the thing/people that is behind them.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Several of you are wondering if the presence of the woman is symbolic in someway, thinking her actions might represent something significant in a larger context. @Tiara is closely examining her body language and facial expression and sees pride, dignity, seriousness, and respect, and thinks that maybe she is doing something that others are scared to do themselves. @Tiara even discusses the honor of this action. @ Ana Sobrevilla thinks she might be sacrificing something. @A.Farrior feels this is a powerful move in some way, and even discusses irony when comparing her stance to the police being fully armed. Feel free to agree or disagree with these thoughts! Returning to the image, what do you see that makes you say that? And what more can we find in this picture? Keep up the great work everyone!!
Brandon (LCMS)
This picture is The swat team greeting a girl. I know this because the two men are shaking her hand. This is training for the swat team. I know this because there are many more swat members behind them. Something is happening bad so the swat has to stop it. I know this because there is a wall of swat members and a lady is being told off by two swat members. That is my explanation of what this picture means.
Sami C (Souderton)
I think that the women meant have a bomb or its a rioter of some kind. I see some kind of wires from her hand also it seems like they are wearing some kind of bomb armor. She meant just be a rioter because I don't see a bomb also she is dressed up.There are people in the background just staring also it seems like the police are just standing there. Also, it meant be some kind of exercise or drill .
Emily (LCMS)
In the picture, it looks like it takes place at a college. I know this because in the background, there are other students and maybe reporters watching what is going on. The girl in the photo looks like she is getting stopped from doing something; i know this because there is a barricade of military agents in high tech armor trying to prevent something. Last, it looks like the girl in the picture tried to do something wrong. It looks like she tried to protest about something.
Ashley Varner (Souderton )
1. there is a protest going on. 2. The swat team is there and it looks like they're ready to act if needed. 3. the woman looks like she's trying to reason with some of the men on the riot crew.
Boisterous Bards (Duluth MN)
This picture looks like a peaceful protest. There doesn’t appear to be any conflict, even though the riot police are there in full gear. It looks like the riot police approaching the young woman are going to arrest her. The police is carrying handcuff ties.
danny sepulveda (tx)
they are doing a non violent protest and the police are trying to stop them
breanna (lcms)
i think that this is some kind of protest and this girl id helping them with information on the protest. I know this because if there are that many swat officers there it has to be serious and there are also other people behind the girl. the girl is dressed formally so she could have went to an event before or she is going to one after. i know this because most people on a regular day don't go out in formal clothing. based on this evidence i can tell that they are having a protest ans the swat officers are there to stop it
alexa perez (san antonio)
there is a lady and a bunch of swat team There is a black lady
Elizabeth G. (Vale ms)
I believe that it may be a protest between white and blacks but she seems like she wants to solve it peacefully and not have violence if nessecary.
alexa perez (san antonio)
There is a black young women with a swat team Because that’s what I see
Makayla (School)
They are a swat team there with just one lady standing there made talking to they about what happened. They are just around her and only her and she is wearing a nice dress
Albert,Almaraz (Tx)
Q1- Looks like their are policemen building a wall, just in case of a riot. Q2- Also the policemen have riot gear on. Q3- I think the policemen are trying to prevent a riot.
Andrew (San Antonio)
1.may be the girl is giving the man something 2. it look like the girl is giving something 3. they are a lot more man in the back round
Junior Class (Waterloo)
We see men in riot gear. It looks like they are making a wall. We see zip-ties which makes us think that there are more people behind this woman. The woman looks calm and is dressed in formal wear. We wonder if this is a picture of a conflict between white supremacist and counter-protestors.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
I am hearing some terrific examples of thinking about, looking deeply at, and remaining curious about this image! It sounds like many commenters are focusing on the interaction between the woman and the figures on the left. I’m hearing questions about what the role of the woman might be. @Julia B and @Ben think she is part of a peaceful protest. It sounds like others are wondering if the woman is being accosted by the figures on the left. @Kyra brings up police brutality and thinks the woman is avoiding this by showing what she is holding in her hands. @Orlando thinks the figures are having a conversation. @Ezra thinks the figures are backing away from her because she is dangerous. @None of you business sounds like the figures might be greeting her. @Michael thinks the woman looks innocent. And @Arianna thinks she is being protected. Remember to comment on others' responses, and feel free to agree and disagree as we continue discussing! What more can we find?
Alexia Burnett (Ohio)
I think that this is some kind of protest. With all this "White Cops Hate Black People" thing going on I think that these (What look like) S.W.A.T members are showing they do not hate black people. They see them as equals as we all should. I think maybe they are doing some kind of dance or ritual or something. I think maybe this lady had lost a brother to a white police man and they feel awful. I think they may want her to know that it doesn't make all white police men bad.
Allison Zafiri (MA)
In the picture, there is a calmly standing girl who is not followed by others being confronted forcefully by law officials who come from another larger group of law enforcement / police, on the side of the girl there are others who are watching the scene go down. Evidence that clearly proves this interpretation of the image is that the girl is standing without others behind her but doesn't seem to have any angered facial expression or movement, the girl is simply standing her ground before being confronted with force by two men who are armed /protected men, people on the sidewalk / pass the grass patch are observing the officer approach the girl but no one is topping them. Also the girl pictured doesn't seem to be having any visible weapons, shielding, or hurtful / offensive posters showing her intent wasn't to hurt but prove a purpose of how brutal officer can be. Concluding that safety wasn't the reason for the police to approach her peaceful protest.
Adreally (LCMSC)
in this photo it seems to me the there was people protesting. i think of this because their is a group of police mans blocking the street. the woman standing in the middle of the street might of been protesting and the polices officers asked to back up and she did not, and now they are going to arrester. i think of this because one of the policy officer is holding her hand while the other one is holding a string handcuff.
Amanda (LCMS)
in this photo i think that, the girl did something wrong because it looks like the team of soldiers is taking her somewhere or telling her to do something.
Arianna (LCMS)
In the photo the police are trying to protect the girl from what she might do. I know this because the police are worried and trying to help her. I also see that the girl has something white in her hand. I know this because the policeman on the left of the two near her is trying to either grab her hand or what is in her hand. What is happening is a very serious matter. I know this because their are many policemen lined up waiting for what will come next. Based on the evidence, this could be a protest and the girl is refusing to move.
Aaliyah (LCMS)
In the picture it looks like there is supposed to be some type of peace treaty or settlement between the girl in the dress and the armed soldiers/police. I know this because they are shaking hands and looking at each other in a very serious matter. There are people holding hands and standing around them creating a circle. This could mean they are trying to create peace in the town.
Jake George (Windham, NH)
In this picture it looks like there are a lot of young FBI Agents that are in armored suits maybe going through training or inspecting this ladies devices or apparel incase of any crime
Alexia Burnett (Ohio)
I like this. This is a different way of thinking. I was thinking more of a Racial protest. Swat members showing that they think blacks are equal but this very well could be some kind of training.
Patrick (LCMS)
Claim 1- In this picture thae lady is protesting. I know this because the are wearing protected suits they dont normally wear. Claim 2- In this picture they are also walking very slowly and/or walking saftly towords her. I know this because they are walking on an angle. Claim 3- In this picture there arer people waching this lady getting arrested. there are people in the backround watching them. Based the evidence i have stated I can infer that this lady is protesting and is getting arrested.
Sawyer (Windham nh)
In this picture there are police in riot gear going to this girl to help her some how. There might be a riot going on before this picture was taken and the girl is left there.
None of your buisness (lcms)
It looks like the girl is part of or leading some sort of special occasion/party and is being honored for something. I know this because the girl is dressed nicely, there are people gathering around, and it looks as if the police are greeting her. They also do not have any weapons or shields being held, so i know that nothing dangerous, and no protests are going on, and the girl looks friendly.
Ezra (Windham, New Hampshire)
The men are backing away from her as if she's dangerous or something. As if she is a threat to them of the people around them, it looks like they are backing away in fear or they are going towards them trying to "stop" her,
Orlando (LCMS)
in the Picture it looks like it could take place near an office building this could be because there is a building that looks like and office in the background also in the picture there could be a protest taking place i know this because there is like a riot squad to the left. the woman on the left could be talking to the officers i know this because she appears to be interacting with the officers.
Jeremy (LCMS)
I can prove that the men with the swat gear on them is protecting this girl. I know this because it looks like they are trying to pull her away of whats happening behind the woman with a dress on. I can prove that the men in the swat gear are arresting or she is surrendering. I know this because it looks like the swat team is running at her like aggressively with some kind of plastic handcuffs. the woman in the dress is calm going up to the swat team. I can prove that the woman in the dress has done something wrong. I know this because there is a huge swat team just standing there. It looks like they are going to arrest her.
Kyra (Windham NH)
Due to the swat team on the left side of the picture, I think that there is a riot and not a peaceful one, because of their heavy armor. The girl on the left seems to be presenting keys, maybe a phone in her hand, showing them what she has so they don't hurt her (police brutality). She seems like she's trying to prove a point due to the way she's standing, in a peaceful protester kind of way, confident. Maybe she's trying replace the riot with a peaceful protest.
Alexia Burnett (Ohio)
I am not saying your opinion is wrong. I do not think it is a unpeaceful riot. They are obviously not trying to hurt this girl and there are not many other people around. I think that these SWAT members are a part of this protest they look like thay are doing something (with respect) with this women.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thanks for you original comment, @Kyra, and for your very respectful response, @Alexia Burnett! It sounds like we have slightly differing opinions about the actions of the figures on the left, which you are both thinking might be the SWAT team. You both sound like you're thinking the woman might be part of a peaceful protest. @Alexia, what in the image do you see that makes you say the figures on the left are being respectful? @Kyra, what do you see that makes you say she is trying to prove a point? Keep up the great work!
lauren (lcms)
I think that the swat team is blocking this girl because there is something bad happening that they don't want people to see or get hurt so they blocked everyone off and most people got the memo except for her. I know this because she is the only person trying to get past them.everyone else is just standing around looking. Something bad is happening behind the swat team. I know this because they are first blocking people off from getting through. Second, there is people standing around trying to see what is happening. Based on the evidence, There is definitely something extremely bad happening cause the swat team doesn't come out unless there is a bomb or any other bad things that police cannot handle.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@lauren, thank you for your comment in today's discussion! It sounds like you're thinking about the implication of police presence, guessing that their presence means something troubling has happened, potentially outside of the frame. It sounds like you're thinking these figures are protecting the woman. What do you see that makes you say that most people knew about this situation and the woman did not?
Xavier (LCMS)
In the picture a lady is standing in front of a group of cops. She might be a part of a protest about something. She might be trying to start a riot but no one is backing her up. The cops seem a little worried about her.
Adriana B (SP - Brazil)
it looks like they are almost shaking hands. I am not sure if they are on the same side of that protesst.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thanks for your comment, @Adriana B! It sounds like you're still curious, like others in this discussion, about whether or not these figures are working together, looking at the gesture implied by their hands. What more can we find? Keep up the close looking!
Isaiah (LCMS)
I think the officers are being cauitous protestor of black lifes matter.they look cautious beacuse it seems that they are walking slowly and are highly protected with backup and armor. the portestor looks really brave and standing up for what she thinks is right and not wrong to her. it might be around the black lives matter beacuse she is black and all the other people inn this photo are white.also she might be trying to commit suicide because in the phot it looks like she has something on her chest that has a wired connected to her phone might be a bomb of sorts. based on the evidence the officers are trying to stop or avoided the protestor that might be in harm way.
Max (LCMS)
My claim is that she a protester. I know this because she is calm cool and not scared one bit. Also that the men are trying to help her or something else. I know this because they are SWAT or heavy police officers because they have white bands. Maybe a riot happen. I know this because they have a lot of gear on. Based on this evidence it looks like a riot or protest because of the officers have heavy gear.
Kailah (LCMS)
There is a war about to occur. I know this because the men are in heavy duty protective gear. The men are welcoming the lady. I know this because the lady and men are standing very close and holding hands. A planned event is happening. I know this because the men in the back are all standing in a straight line, they are all in the same uniform, and people are watching them. Based on valid evidence, I think a planned event like a war is about to happen.
jake (lcms)
i believe the 2 men are swat member protecting the woman in black, maybe shes a queen
nick (LCMS)
This photo leads me to believe that this woman is part of a protest. I believe this because in the picture there is hundreds of police officers. the woman maybe getting escorted away from the police officers because she had gotten to close to them. i am led to believe this because this woman is the only person who as stepped to close to the officers and the officers are running at her to make sure she doesn't have a weapon or something like that . This protest is a peaceful non-violent one. I believe this because the officers in the front of the line do not have any shields to protect themselves.
mara (LCMS)
There looks like a protest happening. The girl looks like she's upset or mad and the police men look worried. There are a bunch of policemen in the back guarding something or protecting something. There are some people but maybe the lady is wanting to go somewhere but isn't allowed.
johanna (LCMS)
It looks like the two policemen are going to arrest the women. I know this because the cop to the right is holding her hand and the other one is keeping an eye on them. It looks like the women is a protester. I know this because she is with the cops and probably back talking to them. It looks like it is about to rain there. I know this because the color of the sky is grey. In conclusion, I think the women is getting arrested for refusing to stop protesting in the rainy weather.
Sage (LCMS)
It looks as if there was some sort of protest that went on. I know this because of the guards standing in unison. It looks as if the guards are overreacting and trying to handcuff the woman or take the handcuffs off of her. Or the women could be holding something of value to the guards. I can tell by the guards reaction that they are being very cautious. The women looks like she is surrendering, she looks very calm and is holding her ground even though she is aware of the consequences.
Shane Smith (Heide Trask High School, NC)
You can see 2 members of the swat team or riot patrol either running up to or backing away from a woman. I think they are running toward her based on the angle that the 2nd officer is standing. They may be moving her for her own safety or simply because she wasn't supposed to be there. You can see that there is a crowd on the side of the road where people are watching the situation. She is holding what seems to be keys and a phone. Most likely referencing the many times people claimed to be holding something other than a weapon and were treated like it was a weapon. Also she is African-American which leans towards a black lives matters protest.
L.C.M (Ms.Jeffcoat class)
In this picture I seem to noticed that all the people in armor seem to be young men. Their outfit/costume don't seem to be in like the FBI or cops or any organization. The girl in the dress don't seem sad or upset, she seem to be standing up straight without any fear. what I also noticed is that they see to be in the middle of a road. The girl seem to have a handcuff on her hand, but why? they are probably just having a costume party or maybe just doing a play.
William M. (Chaska)
I think there was a protest at a college, which is why there is police in heavy armor and she is protesting something. They have some kind of hond cuffs to put around her hands.
Ja'Quari (NC)
The girl seems to be willingly getting arrested by the SWAT based on her expressions. The SWAT look like they're running up to her to arrest her. The line of officers in the background seem to be preventing a protest. There are also bystanders under a tree.
A.Farrior (Ms. Jeffcoat HTHS)
In this photo it looks like there is a ¨protest¨. The policeman seem to get more aggressive as the weaponless protester moves forward. She looks very calm and prepared for what is happening, willing to fight for what she truly believes. The people in the back are directing their attention to her because the move she is making is very powerful. This protest occurred in Baton Rouge, LA. These are protest against police brutality. Ironically, the police are fully armed.
Anahi (HTHS NC)
In this picture, we can see that their are men that are possibly a part of the SWAT team surround a certain area. The two SWAT polices seem to be zip tying a woman of a different race then them. It's a peaceful protest. I can say this because their are no people surrounding the area and their is just one girl. I can also observe that the woman is dressed nicely and they are standing on some sort of street.
Angel Estrada (Minnesota)
The police might bring this person over to them because they might have been endangered
Irvan D. (Ancient Greece)
This women looks like she and some other people are protesting against something and she looks like she is going to destroy something because only 3 guys from the squad of police men are walking towards her or walking away trying to talk her out of it, and the others are just standing their.
Lindsay (Chaska High School)
The men are backing away from her as if she's dangerous or something.
Ana Sobrevilla (Chaska High School)
Looks like a women is chained up. Or maybe she's sacrificing about something
stephanie gomez (chaska high school)
It looks like the women is very calm and ready for whatever is going to come to her and there is a lot of law enforcement surrounding her.
Belle (Minnestoa)
It looks like the soldiers are trying to fend off the woman from coming towards them.
Claire (chaska)
In the photo it looks like this girl is protesting something and the swat team feels threatened by something she has done maybe is what I am inferring because of the way they are moving in on her.
gerson roche (chaska)
she's probably protesting and the police are gonna arrest her or move her away
Ethan McDonald (Chaska)
It looks like some sort of riot team is searching a women for weapons. It looks like a pretty recent picture because of the quality and buildings around it.
David R**** (C***** Minnesota)
protest
Ja'Juan (Ms. Jeffcoat's Class)
In this picture I believe that the woman is protesting against the police. The reason I say this is because there's a barricade across the street made by the police. It seems that the police are putting handcuffs on her as well.
Carine (Ansonia, Ct)
In this picture, I think the young lady is protesting for something that has to do with black lives matter and the guards are stepping in and trying to stop her by handcuffing her because they feel threatened by her actions.
Emma (CHS)
Maybe the S.W.A.T have to check people individually for something, I don't know what or why
Fabiola R (HTHS , NC)
In this picture i see a woman and SWAT team it looks as if they are in a hurry because they are like backing away. I also see how they have the Zip Ties to like handcuff her. I also see how in the background there are more people watching the scenario and there are more uniformed men.
Sam. L (Minnesota)
It looks like this woman is protesting something and the police are coming to detain her
Noelle Slezak (Minnesota)
There is a woman and she is making the police officers back up, but they seem like they are confronting her, and also she seems to be of importance because she is wearing a dress.
yes (No)
some protest
Dj (Not New York)
Yes, this is a great observation. Also where is No
Tiara (HTHS)
In this picture, it looks like this young lady is doing some type of a protest. I think this because of the setting of the picture and how multiple people that look like they are in a SWAT force are standing. She may be very strong-willed and are standing up for others that are scared to do so themselves. The men are trying to get the young woman out of the street but the way her body is positioned, showing pride and dignity. She also has this face of seriousness, respect, and straight. I noticed that her arms are crossed and she is standing up with her back straight has if she is defending something in her own honor. The men look as if they're afraid in some way and are attempting to keep her back. What else I notice is, there are zip ties hanging from the men's waist band. They made be used has handcuffs or to show as if they will use them at the very least but used as a threat.
Katie Allen (Minnestoa)
In this pictures it lookes like a girl protesting about something and maybe she threatened to blow up something. Theres a swat team so its obvisouly something pretty concerning.
Jaime (Ms.Jeffcoat)
There is a couple of riot soldiers trying to grab a girl. I say this because i see two riot soldiers approaching a girl. There are plenty of riot soldiers.
Khamari G (HTHS)
In this picture, it looks like the girl is protesting but you can't tell if she is gonna be arrested or protected. I say that because it looks like the guys are running towards her. I also found that the men have a type of handcuffs that are different from the handcuffs that regular police have.
Madi (ms.jeffe's class hths)
1. In this picture it looks like she is trying to offer them something. 2. I say this because shes in a really nice dress and they are officers of some kind and shes holding something towards them 3. Maybe it is a war and she wants to just say sorry
Jaden (emmett o'brien technical high school)
1.) all the guards are are blocking the lady from passing. 2.) It is basically racism. 3.) I can't find anymore
Adriana conrado (ansonia)
it looks like she was saying something to them and they didnt like what see was saying or they didnt agree so they tried to escort her away.she was probably protesting against something
Brayden (hths)
There is a woman standing in front of guards. it looks like they are trying to take her away from the area. I think this because they seem to be coming at her with their hands out. I see more guards behind the two coming at the lady and I see that there are a few other people standing by just watching.
Lanie (HTHS)
It looks like the guards are taking the women away. I say this because they look like they're approaching her with open arms as if they are ready to grab her. I also see that there is multiple guards standing behind them.
michael (hths)
In the picture, there is a woman who's being confronted by 2 police officers who are in full riot gear. The police officers have helmets on and protective armor with zip ties on their waists, while the woman looks innocent. More things that I can see is other civilians in the background, and more officers standing in a line, in full riot gear.
Brenna Mills (Ansonia CT)
I think the girl is headed to see someone from the SWAT team and is not allowed. She looks serious and as if she is on a mission. She may know a guy and wanting to give him something because I see there is something in the guy's hand and hers.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Brenna Mills - thank you for your comment! I hear you wondering about a potential story in this image, and you're really looking at the hands and the hand placement of the figures. To you, this reads as her wanting to give somebody something, but not being allowed to do so. What more can we find?
T'Zaih Hanks (Ansonia)
It's a Black Lives Matter protest.
Dess (Ct)
I believe that the lady in the lovely dress is protesting and the swat came to approach her. It seems like she is holding something which at first i thought was bomb but maybe she is holding something that represents what she is protesting about.
A'Va (HTHS)
This looks to be a protest. There are a lot of policemen in the streets. The woman seems very calm and police seem very afraid.
Julia B. (HTHS)
It looks like a peaceful protest may be happening because there's more people in the background. There's a large group of men dressed in protective uniforms and there's 2 standing in front of the woman. The woman may have done something wrong because the men are backing away and one is holding her hand. The men standing in front of the woman are all dressed in protective uniforms. The woman is dressed normally.
Ben (Heidi Trask High school)
I believe that this was a peaceful protest in which Law enforcement was called to "control" the crowd. In this picture a protester is calmly walking up to Law enforcement officers and the officers seem to be afraid due to their standing back and seeming readiness to arrest. I notice they have what seems to be plastic handcuffs .
Taylor (HTHS Jeffcoat's Class)
In this picture, there is a women standing tall in front of a mob of authority. She looks like she is trying to rebel against someone or something she believes in. I say this because the two men seem to be trying to stop her, and she is still standing confidently. I can also find her wearing a dress. She looks lady-like and nonviolent.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Taylor, thank you for your comment in today's conversation! You're focusing on the woman, saying that in her garb and her nonviolent attitude, she seems to contrast the other figures, which you are saying seem to potentially represent authority. What do you see that makes you say that?
Madison Roberts (Chaska High School)
I think it has to do with a quiet protest annd the cops are holing a random womans hand to represent peace.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Madison Roberts - I hear you presenting what sounds like a different interpretation about the relationship between the figures on the left and the figure on the right. I'd love to know more - what do you see that makes you say this might represent peace? What more can we find?
Carley Robson (HTHS, North Carolina)
In this picture there are a group of police officers. It looks likem two of the officers are trying to attak a women of color. The lady looks ver seriouse, and confidents in what she is doing in this picture. She seems to be the only female, only person, only soul who is standing up to the officers. MAybe there was a protest and she was the first one there or she was the only one who was willing to keep standing up for what she believes in. Why is she the only other person there witht he officers? Why are there only two going towards her and the rest of the officers standing back like they are scared?
MTA (Ms.Jeffcoat's Class)
Looks like there at a protest of some sort and the woman approached them calmly and stern and the officers look afraid like there hesitating. what makes me think its a protest is because the swat teen our in a herd like there blocking off something and there in the middle of the street
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Welcome to the conversation, @MTA! I hear you thinking about the setting and the role of these figures. I'm curious - what do you see that makes you say the officers look afraid?
Cassie Herring (CHS)
I think this swat team is escorting her in NYc
Nyurka (CT)
In this photo it seems as if this young girl was protesting and that the swat team was handcuffing her while she was speaking her mind. To me it looks as if shes harmless and doesn't want to hurt anyone she just wants her voice to be heard.
Cristhiana (ansonia,ct)
In this picture it looks like there might of been a protest happening because there is a swat team and one girl approached them which probably means that she's trying to have an agreement with the police. It looks like he's running towards her like they are about to run her down.
John (CT)
I think the police force is trying to communicate with a group peacefully but also protecting themselves from any danger the group might cause. I think this because the girl is just walking without any fear of being hurt towards a bunch of people wearing a lot of protective gear. I can see there are a lot of spectators watching them.
Hamza (Chaska)
Somebody gave up a hostage
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thank you @Hamza for your thoughts on this image! It sounds like you're presenting a different story to accompany the picture here. What do you see that makes you think of hostages being freed?
Mitchell (Minnesota)
A girl is standing and maybe has a weapon on her or something and is being approached by police in riot gear.
Nathan Reig (HTHS)
The girl in this picture is being escorted to a very important event. The proof here are the many swat team guards waiting to protect this girl. The girl seems to be in a dress and ready to have a conference.
Autumn Cromartie (North Carolina)
It apears that in his image a protester is going up to riot police in a protest. The riot police have very heavy armor and it looks like they put something around the protesters wrist, which could be a form of hand cuffs. She could be going up to the riot police to proof some type of point, or to show her oposition.
Walsh (Earth)
I think that a serious riot is going on at what looks like a campus because of the heavy armor the cops have.
Kayla Piczko (Ansonia,CT)
There is a woman trying to be peaceful and the cops look like they are trying to apprehend her. The woman is very calm and posed. The cops look like they are a little angry. They look like they want to do something to her but they donr know how to act because of how calm her demeanor is. This picture is very popular since it was around the time of the massive police shootings that happened around the country. This just shows how cops are willing to take anyone to jail on anything.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
I hear you really looking at the emotions of these figures, @Kayla Piczko, and wondering how that can tell us more about the story behind this image. I am curious to hear more - what do you see that makes you say that this image is from a time you recognize (the time in which incidents of police brutality were highly reported in the news)?
Alexis (EOB)
In this picture there is a lady in a long dress that looks like she may be approaching the SWAT team. She may be protesting for whatever theyre doing. She is probably the only one out of all those people in the background to actually go up to them. The members of the team look a little worried.
Destiny (Ansonia CT)
After looking closely at the image above, I think that a girl is trying to peacefully go up to swat officers to show she is no threat, this could be a protest. The reason I think this is based on her posture and how the swat team officers react. Whatever is going on does not cause a panic with surrounding people.
Alexa (JMHS)
In this picture, a woman appears to be positively protesting a certain issue. I am unable to determine whether the law enforcement officers approaching her are doing so in an attempt to stop her from taking any further action (as she does not appear to be harming anyone or to be in danger) or whether they would just like to discuss her reasons behind her protest. She appears to be cradling some sort of object within the palm of her hand, as well as pressing a white-tinted object against her abdomen, for unknown reasons.
landon d (texas)
they seem to be doing swat training
Vincent (JMHS)
This looks like a picture of a women confronting a swat team to maybe hand over something. I think this because the women looks like she is giving something to the swat officer. Also, there might be a riot because there are a lot of swat officers behind the two approaching the girl.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Keep up the great work commenters! I hear many comments wondering about the identity of the female figure and what she could be doing in this scene. We are piecing together many parts of this picture to come to some hypotheses... Her emotional state seems striking to some viewers - @Cristyana Fletes thinks she seems calm. xXBryangaribay77Xx thinks she is brave. @Jensen R and @Caydence interpret her facial expression as annoyed. Others are wondering about her role in this setting. @Vince thinks she might be in charge of the armed figures, giving them orders, and @Ravi agrees. @gm696 thinks she might be a protester, and @Liam, @Joe, and @Ky agree. @Kevin disagrees, wondering why there are no other protesters behind her. @Pam and @Naz think if she is protesting, it might be for the Black Lives Matter movement. All of these multiple perspectives are welcome! Remember to look back to the image for evidence - What do you see that makes you come to your conclusions? And what more can we find?
Crystal (JMHS)
I have seen this picture during the breakout of the movement " #Blacklivesmatter" about whats going on in the community going along with police brutality. In this picture I see a women of color holding something in front of the riot police. To me i feel as if she is recreating a picture that has happened in history or even black empowerment movies. Standing in front of them with no fear of being harmed . Going with the opposite of "hands up do not shoot ". During the time period this pic was taken ,the community saw innocent individuals being harmed by police by doing nothing. To me she is basically doing a silent protest of what she believes in and is standing up for who was killed during the time this was taken.
Medina (PDale)
In the picture the women is standing up for what she believes she is also in front of the SWAT standing up for herself.I say this because she is really brave and proud for doing that.
Sophia (Jmhs)
This image really sparks my attention. The fact that there is a riot police on what seems to be a college campus seems really out of the ordinary. The female is being approached rather rapidly by these men in very heavy bullet proof armor. The young woman does not seem at all hostile or to have any weapons on her so it really does grad by attention and rattle my brain. Why is the riot police approaching her as if she's a violent criminal? One of my other classmates brought to my attention that this image was seen on social media platforms around the time that police brutality alligations and the black lives matter were at their peek. Which would make sense consider the female is of color and these are police.
Brian (JMHS)
This looks to be some type of protest that was dispersed by riot control police and this one lady who did not move was arrested as evidenced by the zip tie handcuffs.
jada (palmdale)
In this picture i think this young black lady is peacefully protesting for what she believes in and the police/swat team are trying to stop her from doing just that. If I'm not mistaking i think she's protesting for Black Lives Matter because that's starting to become a big thing to protest for over the years
Ann (kk)
i think that she is getting arrested for not moving or stopping her protest when the police ask her to
Ronald Martinez (Palmdale, CA)
In this picture we see a young woman being approached by two law enforcers as she stands still. The young woman is probably a part of some kind of protest. I believe that as the officers approaching her are wearing riot gear and the amount of officers present is large. They are also formed in a line, as if they are denying further access. The picture signifies the war between peace and violence, as the young woman resembles peace while the officers portray a sign of aggressiveness.
Zyanna Thomas (JMHS)
In this picture, I noticed an African-American woman in a nice dress facing towards a whole SWAT team. Out of the whole SWAT team, only two of the members decided to step forward as the rest just watched. She looks as if she is possibly holding something in her hand whether it'd be a phone, or some sort item as her other arm is wrapped around her waist. Most people that are going being examined by some sort of protective force put their hands up and drop everything they have. But she stood firm. In the background, I also noticed that large group of people standing a far distance a way or by the tree. My guess is that she is standing up for what she believes in either a protest or is being examined by the swat due to a serious recent event that took place. My only question is, why is she standing alone?
Liam (Massachusetts)
There is a line of swat officers, and 2 officers going up to a lady that has somewhat dark skin, maybe protesting, could be arresting her or talking to her i don't know what is going on here. \
Noah (Connecticut)
I think the girl was apart of a protest and the riot police arrested her for coming to close.
maria (ansonia)
it looks like the girl is in handcuffs being arrested for something like a protest because the police officers look annoyed almost. I find that the girl is sticking up for what she's protesting about
Alyssa G. (Texas)
Well i wouldnt say they are arresting her because usually you dont look nice when your going to jail and she looks kind of like she took time to pick her clothes. and anyways you dont need a whole swat team to put hand cuffs on the girl. its a fake i bet lol
Citlalli Mendoza (California )
In this picture a women standing in front of the S.W.A.T. or armed forces. Standing proud and tall, the woman has her feet planted on the ground looking like she is not going to move for anybody. She is probably standing against the authorities for what she believes is right. I think this is happening because she had a straight serous face. I also see the other authorizes standing in a line together. and woman is standing by herself.
Emily (California)
In this photo, there is an African American woman standing in the center of a road in front of two swat officers, taking a stand against injustice towards African American in the U.S. and the unlawful deaths/shootings of countless people of color in recent years. Some context clues than suggest this photo was taken at a protest/movement are the rest of the swat members, probably called for crowd control, as well as bystanders in the background, who are directing their attention towards the woman and the two officers. Also, the Black Lives Matter movement has been gaining momentum in the past couple of years. This photo is very powerful, as the woman is standing tall against the problems that have faced minorities for decades and even to this day. Her dress flowing in the wind and the barrier created between her and the swat officers by the distance in between them makes her appear almost god-like.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thanks for your comment, @Emily! I hear you looking really closely at this image, examining the identities of the figures, their relation to each other, as well as what's going on in the background. You're also thinking about the context of this image, which you perceive to be happening in today's political climate, discussing the Black Lives Matter movement, which hopes to end racial injustice and violence towards African Americans through intervention. You're also noting something new about this image - a sort of poetry in this picture in the way that the appearance of the female figure contrasts the figures on the left. What do you see that makes you say this image is from the present day? Keep up the good work and close looking!
Marina Pacheco (Connecticut)
I believe that in this picture the women is calm and standing up for what she believes in and also to prove she will not back down no matter what the SWAT team says.
Alexander Madore (Ansonia CT)
I think there was a protest before because there is lots of police middle of the road. Maybe the woman is part of the protest but she´s just standing up in front of the police and looking them. Two police are moving to woman but the woman still standing up middle of the road so I think she´s not afraid of the police and she´s brave. She protesting what she believes. She´s wearing a nice dress. And somebody taking her pictures. The cameras are beside of the road with the other people. Maybe the journalists are beside of the road too.
Gianna Martinez (Ansonia )
I think the picture shows that the woman is very calm and stern as the police looks scared and worried about going up to her, could be something racial.
roy (Massachusetts)
it could be a protest. hope everythings ok
Nick Teixeira (CT)
In this photo it seems as if this girl is protesting something of sort, though I'm not sure what. She is either being protected or targeted by this swat team, on account the a few of them are backing away. She appears to be relatively armed with a phone at most, from the looks of it.,
Jess (JMHS, NJ)
Notice the difference in composure between the woman in the picture and the riot police confronting her. I think this happened during a protest, and the woman seems peaceful, but it looks like she's about to be arrested, perhaps with the zip ties at one of the officers' waist. I think this image might be at one of the Baton Rogue protests in Louisiana, or something involving police brutality. I originally thought she was talking to them calmly, but if you look closer, they look confrontational.
Noah (JMHS)
There appears to be a women in a nice dress calmly approaching the riot police. It looks as if they are wary of her and checking her for any type of weapon since they are defending against a riot so they will trust no one. There are people in the background holding signs which does lead me to believe it may be a riot. The riot police are equipped with guns, zip ties, pepperspray, and a tazer.
KatieJSD (JMHS)
In my opinion this picture portrays a blockade set up by the SWAT team of officers to hold off a specific event. This could be a girl wanting to pass, neither of the police or the woman look flustered so she probably means no harm. However I'm not really sure what's going on.
Cameron Reich (Hudson, Ohio)
In this photo, there are many armed people stopping a protest. This is true because usually you only see this many offices when there are many people who can be dangerous. It also looks like they women is handing something to the officers and there are only two officers approaching her so she probably isn’t that dangerous but she is probably handing this to the officers for the protest. This could also be a women getting handcuffed for a crime but this is false because there wouldn’t be that many officers if there is only one person. This is obviously a protest because of how many guards there are and the women giving something to the officers.
Jadon (JMHS)
This picture is pretty confusing. There is a lady there who is obviously not doing anything wrong. She is dressed nicely and it looks like she was at or going to a special event. I can't tell if she was stopped by the police or if she walked up to them but either way I don't know what they would be saying to her. They don't look mad at all and the lady has a very serious look on her face. My guess is that there was some sort of protest going on but based on what the woman is wearing, I don't really think she was a part of it.
TH (Massachusetts)
The SWAT Team is going to take her to safety. They are trying to help.
Isabel (JMHS)
In the photo above, it looks like the woman is protesting or making a statement. I am confused as to why the two men from the swat team are rushing towards her even though she appears completely harmless. She looks as if she is holding something or handing something to them. Also the scene looks like it is taking place at a college campus, and I can see that there are people watching the event.
Julia (Jmhs)
There is a young woman in a long dress approaching a SWAT team. The woman looks very calm and the SWAT team almost looks worried or scared about her approach. The SWAT team seems to have been stopping her from continuing forward. They could be asking her questions about what she is doing.
Torin (JMHS)
In this picture there are 2 policemen with zip-ties on their belts. It looks like instead of handcuffs they are using the zip-ties.This could be some type of protest due to the people standing in the background.I'm not sure why they are approaching the woman like that. She looks very innocent.
eric harris (columbine high school)
I think what is going on in this picture is the woman is protesting something and the police are trying to maybe zip tie her hands because maybe she poses a threat to them or something. the police could also be backing away from her for some reason.
Diego H (Here)
I think that the women has an artifact that the police may find dangerous but not threatening because not all of them are in motion. Must of them are standing still. I think she is the leader of a movement and came to hand them something.
Zach C (Souderton)
the police have handcuffs and look like they are going to arrest the girl. I think that it was maybe a protest for women and she has crossed the line too far as you can see by the human barricade and they didn't want her getting closer so they're going to handcuff her if she tried to get closer. Maybe she was trying to do a silent protest but she might be taking it too far.
Manuel (Mexico City)
I think the girl was a protester and she was going to detonate herself so the police was going to stop her.
Fernando S (Guadalajara)
In Baton Rouge there is a woman that is protesting for Black Lives Matter. She is calm and is standing in front of many armored police officers.
Annabel (WHRHS)
The photos seems to depict swat or armed officers detaining a silent protester. I assume that the women is a protester by her overall stern demeanor and the fact she stands tall and determined. It's quite ironic that there is such a large number of officers, all armed, quite fearful, when in fact there is only one lone women opposing them.
Maddy (Kentucky)
I think the woman is a protester (due to the people holding up signs and taking pictures in the background) and she is confronting/talking to members of the SWAT team (based on their appearance) who are blocking something/someone (based on their formation). In the photo you can also see a SWAT member with a backpack, the woman holding keys (I think), and a large building in the background.
Ethan R (Hudson Ohio)
There are many things going on in this week’s photo. There are heavily armed men and a woman who looks to be protesting something. This is true because at most protesting areas/ rallies, the men and woman are surrounded by police or heavily armed men to control the situation. Although there is only one person, she might be in the front. One might say she is a criminal because she has no signs and she is the only one ‘protesting.’ This is not true because the men with the armour. If she was just one criminal, why would there be that many men? In this photo, there is a protester in the street.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thank you for your comment @Ethan R, and for considering multiple perspectives on this image! I hear you placing this image in the larger context of protests you might have seen or experienced which have heightened police presence. You're also considering the word "criminal" here, calling our attention to the types of situations police respond to. What more can we find?
Alejandra Salame (ASFG)
I think in this picture this women is a very brave, she is asking for peace. She is arguing with the polices and calming them down. The polices will ignore her and restrain her and take her.
Naz (Palmdale)
This girl is standing up for what she believes in and isn't letting the police men stop her. She's standing up for the Black Lives Matter movement. You can tell how brave and proud she is.
Pam (California )
In this picture it looks like the women is standing in front of the SWAT officers protesting about Black Lives Matter. The officers it looks like they are going to move her or maybe put her under arrest.
NSMS Journalism Squad (Glen Head, NY)
We're not sure if this is a crime scene or not, or whether this woman is really dangerous. Did something happen in this building? Are the police afraid that the woman has a weapon? We notice that she seems to be coming to meet them? Is she important? Does she want to speak to them about important issues? We are concerned that they are running at her with all of that equipment. Why isn't she scared?
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Welcome to the conversation @NSMS Journalism Squad! You're looking at the details of this image and sound like you're curious about the story this image is conveying as well as the role of the female figure in this setting. You're also noting her emotional state in a scenario that seems concerning to you! I'd love to know more - what do you see that makes you say she isn't scared?
Misty Raines (Kentucky)
In this photo it seems as if this girl is protesting something of sort, though I'm not sure what. She is either being protected or targeted by this swat team, on account the a few of them are backing away. She appears to be relatively armed with a phone at most, from the looks of it.
Taylor (Kentucky )
What I think is going on in this picture is a woman is approaching a swat team and they are investigating her to make sure she is okay to go through them. It looks the 3 officers are scared of her.
Elizabeth Granger (New York)
This woman is meeting the police to take them some were
Shelton (Tennessee)
From my students: There is an African-American woman in a nice dress standing very still, looking very serious. There is something in her hand, perhaps a phone, or keys, or something she might be handing to the two men. She may be a protestor or someone very important. The area is heavily guarded. Only two of the guards are approaching the woman, so she is probably not dangerous. There is someone holding a sign across the street, and there is a photographer across the street as well.
gm696 (Woodside CA)
I think this woman was protesting. The officers came and surrounded this woman because in the back of this picture you can see more officers blocking the entrances, in case she tries to leave or people come in to see what's going on. I believe this is a protest because if you look closely, there's an older woman holding up a sign in the back. There's also a lot of people recording/taking pictures. They might be telling this woman to get off the road but she's refusing because her face looks really serious and she looks stiff.
Anton (LCMS)
It could be a bomb squad and the lady might have a small explosive people are tacking photos of this.
Andrew, Zac, and Michael (Millis,Ma)
1.It looks like these men as part of the S.W.A.T are trying to arrest this women.2.They look to be running to her.3.I can find nothing.
nick (lcms )
In the picture the woman is protesting against the police. the are coming to arrest her.
zack (LCMS)
She looks as if she is protesting against something. maybe she is protesting against traffic or something involved in the street. she might have done something bad because it looks like there is 20 something Officers for just her. no one else in the picture is helping her so maybe it is a dumb reason to be protesting against. based on the evidence she looks as if she is protesting against traffic.
xXBryangaribay77Xx (Woodside CA)
I think that in this picture there might be a protest of some sort. The swat team is lined up in the back and two of the swat team members are coming up to the teenager which is standing in the middle being brave and the fact that she is wearing a dress is fascinating.
Cristyana Fletes (Palmdale, CA)
This photo conveys a passive resilient young black woman who is approaching a group of SWAT officers. She seems calm, but the white officers seem to worry about her approach.
Seabass (Palmdizzle)
I think that the lady is walking up to the police to confront them and come at them with piece but the police look scared so they are going to attempt to push her back and restrain her. and she is going to get ziplocked arrested by them. She believes and protests what she believes in so thats what made her to walk up to them.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Good morning, commenters! I'll be helping to facilitate the discussion for the next couple of hours. It sounds like you are all already looking really closely at the image, noting lots of details. Keep looking - what more can we find? And feel free to comment on others' posts, responding to what they see!
Vince (LCMS)
This looks like a important leader of the swat team giving orders to the swat team commanders. I know this because there is only a few swat people going up to her while others sit back. This make me think that those swat members are higher rank and have higher responsibilities and something to do with her. Another reason I know this is what I stated is that the lady isn't scared like it's what she does everyday. I know she is an important leader because she is dressed like she is going to a important meeting.
Audrey Walker (Walla Walla)
it looks like a girl that has a special power and she is using it to push the swat team down and out of the way as she does this her skirt came up. she could be protesting or protecting someone/thing.
