I think people definitely have the right to be upset about this. Racism is something that is very apparent in our society today which is disappointing however, I don't think it was Dove's intention to offend people. I'm almost certain their only intent was to advertise to everyone.
In this day and age, putting anything on the internet is like walking on eggshells. There are so many ways to offend someone. At first I thought that Dove soap, tried their best and failed. They apologized for their mistake. Yet if we dive deeper, we can find out this isn’t Dove’s first mistake pertaining to racism. Marissa Solan, a spokeswoman for Dove, the ad said that they were “re-evaluating our internal processes for creating and reviewing content.” This “mistake” happens twice. It could be because we are humans and we make mistakes, but maybe someone is just not doing their job. Either way we need to be more careful and respect others.
This ad is not meant to be racist. This ad is simply saying that dove works on all types of skin. The reason for this racist thought is the stigma around it. Would it be considered racist if the white person took her shirt off to reveal the black woman?
There was official statements from the actress’ who played the roles and from dove themselves saying it wasn’t meant to be racist and they formally apologized to people who couldn’t get over themselves. What world do we live in where people have to nit pick at every little thing
What I think is that it all depends on how you or how someone else thinks about it. Most of the people would say it's racist, but you may never know maybe the black female maybe also wearing a white shirt under the brown one. It all depends on how you would look at it.
This ad is not a racist because Dove didn’t intend to make the ad like racist. In the article, it states, “Dove is committed to representing the beauty of diversity. In an image we posted this week, we missed the mark in thoughtfully representing women of color and we deeply regret the offense that it has caused.” This quote means that they just created the ad in wrong way they were trying to show the beauty of the all women also they said the body wash for everyone to use.
I think this was racist for me because when i look at the photo i see a black woman transform to a white woman the first thing that come to my head was that they judge black people unfair, they are saying that black people are nasty and dirty. And also at the bottom of the photo the white women has removed the black t-shirt. For example in the short reading says i quote “a white child asking a black child, why doesn’t your mamma wash you with fairy soap.” this quote shows that people said that black people are dirty. If people said that to white people, they won’t be able to say that because they have white skin, but for black people because they have dark skin they think that they are dirty and they don’t take a shower and all that. That is why i think it is racist, because people won’t be able to say that to white people but black people. Overall this article is trying to say that black people are dirty.
Companies before showing the advertisements to the whole world, they need to be careful of what they are showing. Sometimes, happens that the companies show inappropriate and unqualified ads so those companies need to make sure that people forgive them about those ads. According to the article about Dove,”On Saturday, Dove — owned by Unilever — apologized, writing on Facebook: “Dove is committed to representing the beauty of diversity. In an image we posted this week, we missed the mark in thoughtfully representing women of color and we deeply regret the offense that it has caused”, Unilever responded by writing a status on Facebook, apologizing to the people that felt offended about Dove’s advertisement. Nowadays people all around the world use internet and social medias, so a good way for the companies to apologize about their inappropriate ads, it’s using the social medias to communicate to the other people about those problems. Overall, this way to apologize to people by Unilever was a good way how the companies should respond to their inappropriate advertisements .
In my opinion, i don’t think that this is ad racist.
First, the advertisement only show that a black woman removes her brown shirt and Underneath is a white woman in a light shirt. There isn’t anything else such as the words or sentences to express the unrespect to the black people. The owner of the Dove also wirted on the Facebook:”Dove is committed to representing the beauty of diversity. In an image, we posted this week, we missed the mark in thoughtfally representing women of color and we deeply regret the offense that it has caused.” Many people should calm down.
Second, the advertisement just is designed to show the specific of the Dove. The Dove’s product can make people more beautiful and cleaner. This is the real meaning of the product. In actually, if the advertisement can’t be surprised, there are no one to be attracted. So the advertisement must be outstanding. The company of Dove just want to sell out their product. But many people understand in a wrong way.
Notably companies have the social obligation of creating culturally sensitive ads because those type of ads go throughout different parts of society. This ad was about how a Dark skin woman who uses dove took her shirt off and turn into a white woman, this made a huge controversy because it was a racist ad for the black women. According to the text “But the transition from the black woman to the white women- compiled into a static collage by a social media user-- evoked a long-running racist trope in soap advertising.” This shows us that the ad Dove made wasn’t received with a positive way or with the purpose it was made for which was to illustrate different women. Finally this was an ad that had to go through many parts of society and it achieved that goal but not in a positive way.
OOOO
The world now which is meant to be impartial for everyone is somewhere being unjust time to time. Even if people gained liberty, they are treated by unfairness. As an example for this, since a long time back, companies are making ad which clearly shows the feeling of antagonism. A commercial which was made by a Chinese company Qiaobi’s laundry detergent shows, “ An Asian woman shoves a detergent pod into a black man’s mouth and puts him a washing machine, from which he emerges as a light- skinned Asian.” The ad clearly showed the sense of racism which the company was not apologetic because they said they wanted to be unique. This shows that they are intentionally trying to show the unfair treatment towards people basing on their color. Matter of fact, everyone knows that no African or born black cannot change into white using any products. The companies are just finding a way to make a profit on their product but in a wrong way. Therefore, the evidence about the detergent and an unapologetic response from the company shows that the people have still not gained equity against their color, caste or class.
In my opinion, this ad is racist because there are two women in the ad, one light color and the other a dark color, in an announcement to take off her brown shirt to turn white into a white shirt, this is the biggest racial proof against the dark skin. There is also another work that highlights a great deal of racist examples of the dark skin (An ad by the N.K.Fairbank Company, which was in business from 1875 to 1921, that featured a white child asking a black child, “ Why doesn’t your mamma wash you with Fairy soap?” the content of the advertisement two children , one of them a light color and the other dark. The children who carries the light color asking the other child why your mother does protect you with this soap and pointed to the product advertised and here is also evidence of the existence of racism and its absence between the past and present, the main idea of this advertising is that their products remove dirt and germs. In conclusion, the advertisements are not made to offend the other people around the world but to make them be attracted with the products and happy to use them.
In my opinion this ad is Racists because this wasn't the first time that they have done any ad that shows racists toward the black wome. They have not changed the theme of their ad from the being they continued to show black women turning into white women. Is this not the only time that the company had done any ad like this this is their second time showing a Black women skin color has changed using the Drove product. According to the article “Is This Ad Racist?” its stated “In 2011, Dove was criticized for another ad: this one showing three women standing side by side, each with lighter skin than the woman next to her. Behind them were signs reading “before” and “after”; the “before” sign, positioned behind an African-American woman, showed cracked skin, while the “after” sign, behind a white woman, showed smooth skin.” This reveals that the company is showing different Racists ad for long time before. The first ad was showing a Black women using the product and after using the product the Black women turn into white women. In my opinion the product company should not make another ad showing disrespect toward the black women. They shouldn't use two different women from different skin color like black and white women.Overall the ad ad is showing racist toward the black women because they are suggesting the black women to use the product from Dove company so they can turn into white women.
I don’t believe this is racist. All it was trying to convey was that Dove is good for all skin types. I'm sure if it was the other way around, showing a white person switching to black, most people would not consider it racist, because that is the society we live in today. When you watch the whole video, it shows women from other races too. The person who screenshotted this add failed to add that part, making the whole thing seem to judge black people. “Marissa Solan, a spokeswoman for Dove, said on Sunday that the GIF “was intended to convey that Dove Body Wash is for every woman.” This shows me that the ad is not racist because the video was trying to say that Dove body wash is good for every kind of woman and when the black woman transform to a white woman and the white woman transform to a Indian woman.Over all the article is try to say that black people are dirty. i think this ad was made to judge black people because i saw the video and it did not look racist.the video message was trying to say that dove body wash is good for all kind of woman.
this ad is racist because the ad shows a black woman and after she removed her shirt it was a white woman underneath. In addition,Accordings to Is this ad racist Natalie states that, “But the transition from the black woman to the white women-compiled into a static collage by a social media user-evoked a long-running racist trope in soap advertising:a “dirty” black person cleansed into whiteness”this prove that the ad is racist because is telling me that they think black people are dirty and they should start using dove. This ad make me lose my confidence, and self esteem. This ad also makes black people loss their confidence.
In conclusion, the ad led to controversy to all race, cause every time she removes her shirt there's another race or skin color will appear underneath her shirt.Furthermore, this ad is racist because they judge black people by looking at their skin color, this insult black people color.I can’t believe the executive approve this ad.To add on,i think soap companies want to turn black people white.Ads like this have been going on since the 1950s.
The advertising shows the person use the product she change the skin color. But the company say “Visibly more beautiful skin,” the ad read and the company says all three women are intended to demonstrate the ‘after’ product benefit. But the ad racist was not thinking like that. This is big problem because the picture show the black women become to white women. This is the Culturally sensitive. which was in business from 1875 to 1921, that featured a white child asking a black child, “Why doesn’t your mamma wash you with Fairy soap? So this is Ad racist. Because they focus on the skin color.
In my opinion the article “is this ad racist” written by natalie proulx is racist depending on the perspective, if you look at the video you will notice that they used three races black, white and latina. The black woman takes her shirt off to transition into a white women who then transitions into a latina women according to dove who posted this to facebook following the incident ,this was meant to “represent the beauty of diversity” when you view the whole video it doesn't seem racist you will understand that they were trying to show all types of races and how dove is for everyone.
In my opinion Dove ad is not racist, Dove Ad is trying to show that black or white or Asian or whatever race or culture he/she from, we are all people. It was all promoted product and the ethnicities of humans, this what the Ad was saying. In whole commercia, the white women took off her shirt and turned into the Asian woman. It changes to every ethnicity eventually, but the main problem is the news site and the race-baiting like if anyone gets killed over race, the media will directly notify it. This means that you cant believe a picture that only focusing on black women turned to white you have to look for the truth and think about it if is it racist. As some people say let's pretend it's racist why the white women turned into Asian women, if they were racist they would have left it the white women look but she changed to Asian. So that means this Dove soap is not only for black people because they are dirty No is for all people from all countries around the world. Overall this Ad wasn't racist it was racist for the people who were only focusing on the black to white women.
Overall, most people think that the Dove Ad is racist but in my opinion I don't think it’s racist. It is just an ad, so people can buy their products. The part that people think is racist is when the black woman took her shirt off and turn to a white woman, however it was not racist for people when the white women turn to Asian woman.
In my opinion, this ad is a racist. Because unfortunately today has so many discrimination against black people and many discrimination against many things. Eventually making this type of ad will increase the development of racist people in the world, also show a disrespect to the black people, that makes no sense create kind of ad as that one, consequently this is not the first ad from Dove showing racism against black women, before they made an ad showing three women, and explained before you were african-american then once you have use body wash you will become white woman. Second of all, after many people got offended and starts to publish it against Dove, they removed the picture from all their social media, as they were afraid to something really powerful could make anything against them. Also, the spokeswoman which is called ‘Marissa Salen’ said “was intended the Dove body wash is for every women.” this evidence emphasizes the point of the article because it shows themselves are racist. In my opinion, this is completely no respect for the women and before they publish any ad have to pass to many people and I really think who are these people ? I mean, there’s no way to this ad wouldn’t be racist. In conclusion, I would just to point this is really racist against black people and making these type of ad just will decrease their company. Therefore, as after they made this publishment many people said they are not going to buy any product from Dove anymore.

I agree with him because i also think that it is racist against black people because it shows disrespect to them who born as a black. What i think that it's not their fault to born as a black , God made them black they are human too and as a human being we should respect all people no matter their skin color, gender, race, ethnicity or religion.
When it comes down to it, this is a soap advertisement, not a political campaign. While some companies can use their promotional platform to spread their opinions regardless of what they are, this ad was inclusive, not offensive. If you watch the ad, it is on a loop of the black girl to the White girl to the Latina girl continuously changing their shirts into the one of the next person. They do not imply that the Black girl is "dirty" like Fairbank commercials. It would be different if it was a black girl washing herself with soap, and transforming herself into the white woman, THAT would clearly be offensive, but that is not what the company shows. In fact, soap wasn't even included in the commercial, so I am unsure as to how the "black person is cleansed into whiteness." as some claim. The Dove commercial was most likely intended to do just as Marissa Solan says, to "be a celebration of diversity." The advertisement was on a loop for a reason, so that eventually you would forget the original order of the ad and view each woman's transformation as equal. Dove should not have to apologize for this advertisement in my opinion. It is a huge risk for any company or media base today to include race in anything because somebody will always be offended. It is ironic to me that the same people that put such an emphasis on the importance of race equality are the same ones that expect there to be a certain level of sensitivity applied to everything including minority races.
Companies have a social and moral obligation to create culturally sensitive ads because the public may be hurt by them. One strong piece of evidence for this concepts is: “What was the mark?” the Facebook user Ariel Macklin wrote in a comment that was liked more than 1,100 times. “I mean anyone with eyes can see how offensive this is. Not one person on your staff objected to this? Wow. Will not be buying your products anymore.” This evidence emphasizes the point because it shows commercials like these can make feel people disrespected, especially now because people are trying to fight with racists and by producing such an ad they promote even more racism . They are supposed to consider how people will react to the ad, will it cause positive or negative feelings. We can therefore see that it’s important to have a social and moral obligation to create culturally sensitive ads.
I really agree with you, because you explained how much this ad is racist! Good job.
In my opinion ,this article is about a racism because the manner which the company make this ad ,allows us to feel really this is racist .They can use another example but not this one or to employ another cleaner word .I mean they use the black woman like an object in every time needs .It considerate their skin like something of dirty, ugly and healed. They thought that their white skin is better than black skin. But contrary to the black ,they see their dark color like a beautiful and nature skin. Then the company didn’t see that the way they did this ,can hurt much black people and this have a big effect in the society. This can cause problems or increase racism because some white people may think this advertisement is a reality and then it is not the case because it can lead a war between the black against the white. In overall , they use this ad like a( harassment in online) to heart the black people and to manifest really that they hate them

Marketers and product designers can better avoid culturally or racially offensive advertising by paying attention to the fact that there are different types of people. In order to not offend someone, marketers, product designer and other company workers need to find out an individual approach to each type of people. For example, in the article that I read a Dove company workers did not consider that their product will use African people, African-American people, Hispanic people and everyone else. As the result they offended a lot of people. For instance, Natalie states, “Marissa Dolan, a spokeswoman for Dove, said that GIF was intended to convey that the Dove Body Wash is for every woman and be a celebration of diversity but we got it wrong and, as a result, offended many people.” This quote states that the Dove company just wanted to show that their production can be used by any type of people. Their goal was to show that every woman can represent a diversity, but they showed inaccuracy in the way of presenting a Dove soap to the public by showing a black woman as a “dirty” person and white woman as a “clean” person. By realizing that our world is full of different people and we all are completely individual, marketers and product designers could avoid culturally and racially offensive advertising.

Dove’s apology is not acceptable because it's not the first time that they used a racist ad, and as the famous quote says “ it's not wrong to make a mistake, what's wrong is to repeat the same mistake” according to the article “In 2011, Dove was criticized for another ad: this one showing three women standing side by side, each with lighter skin than the woman next to her. Behind them were signs reading “before” and “after”; the “before” sign, positioned behind an African-American woman, showed cracked skin, while the “after” sign, behind a white woman, showed smooth skin. “ this shows that dove is not learning from their mistakes because their repeating the same ad idea that they used in 2011. Overall, people are now convinced that dove company is being racist by purpose and they will not believe any of their excuses even if they are honest.
5
I agree with you because it's not acceptable to demonstrate 2 commercials that show racism. The first time it was forgivable and understandable that they made a mistake, they had a big argument in public and they apologized. But by producing a commercial like this for the second time they show how racist they are and they do not learn from mistakes that they have done in the past. They supposed to pay more attention when they create an ad.
Yes Ad is racist because dove company showing that a african american black women taking her shirt off and the turn her skin to a white color after using the dove, according to the article Among other examples was an ad by the N. K. Fairbank Company, which was in business from 1875 to 1921, that featured a white child asking a black child, “Why doesn’t your mamma wash you with Fairy soap this evidence showing that how a white child making fun of the black child. And they are saying that as if the children are innocent. but they racist company making the child's mind full of bad thoughts. Also by children's seeing this makes it seem bad for the black people. Childrens will think black people is dirty because kids can't think correctly so they’ll believe the company will make it even a bigger problem creating racism with each other.
8
No is not racist because in the Ad they are showing black women turning to white woman and the white woman turn to asian. So this means that they are not making the soap for black people to turn to white they are making it for all people to use it no matter what she is. okay.
Marketers and product designers can better avoid racially offensive advertising in coming together and sharing their thoughts before the ad is posted. One evidence that can be found in the reading states” Dove is committed to representing the beauty of diversity. In an image we posted this week, we missed the mark in thoughtfully representing women of color”. This piece of evidence clearly shows that the members of Dove did not share their thoughts before the ad was posted. It also shows that the members might have understood the ad wrong or only from one perspective which led them to post the ad. Overall, no one is perfect all humans make mistakes however these silly mistakes can lead companies to have problems that never ends. People have to communicate and ask for in order for them to produce something good .Also to ask if they're work make sense. I think if that happened before the ad of Dove was posted there wouldn't controversy about the ad. If you get people to correct your mistakes then, you can avoid it for your benefit and the company's benefit.
In conclusion, Dove company should have looked back to other companies who have done mistakes toward a specific group of people. Also Dove company should have gathered and shared their thoughts before they post the ad. That's because they could have avoided the controversy that happened. In the future, other companies should always make sure that what they're doing is not targeting any specific group of people.

In my opinion this is AD racist because a black women who change her brown shirt and turned into a white person in social media is considerate racist. A lot of people said that this picture is racist and it’s like bullied black people who are watching the picture because some people see it in another way for example; when you use soap that Dove company was posting your skin can get more lighter and that message is for the black people cause their skin is dark they need soap for their body. It’s disrespectful to post this picture in the internet, because people are going to see it in different ways like they don’t respect African American people. This mean that the company dove was trying to get more customer by posting the picture, and other people think it’s bullied , one social media user said “i mean anyone with eye can see how offensive this is”, that exactly true they hurt a lot of customer. They was showing no respect, no dignity, no personality and discipline. Overall some customer was so angry at that posting they said they will not buying their product anymore.

Perfect
I agree with you good

Great Work
i agree
If companies make inappropriate ads then they should apologize to people because it annoys public and social media users. A key piece of evidence is Marissa Solan, a spokeswoman for Dove, said on Sunday that the GIF “was intended to convey that Dove Body Wash is for every woman and be a celebration of diversity, but we got it wrong and, as a result, offended many people.” This means that Dove company wanted to all women use the dove body wash, but that GIF was viewed as a racist by the public and social media people because in that GIF Dove company was comparing the black people and white people and that made people angry and irritated. Overall the Dove company will get negative press by the public because of that racist GIF and it can affect their Business.
In your opinion, is this ad racist? Why or why not?
In my opinion yes, it is racist because there are two girls in the ad, one light color and the other a dark color, in an announcement to take off her brown shirt to turn white into a white shirt,This is the biggest racial proof against the dark skin.

I strongly believe that Dove's advertisemnet is not racist and only shows that Dove's soap is suitable to every type of skin.
The ad shows many different types of skins, all equal, enjoying Dove's product. Thinking that the ad is racist is utter ridicilous- the ad actually shows equality. For example, in the past actuall racist advertisemnets showed only white people, what was actually racist, but when today companies advertise equality by showing all types of people- some will still claim it is racist.
Therefore, claiming that Dove's advertisement is racist is not corret as the ad actually shows the opposite- equality.
I don't think this ad is racist at all. What I got from the ad is that Dove works for all skin tones. I don't even know why people would think its racist. People are so sensitive nowadays to where people can barely do anything without getting called out and getting called something they are not. Plus, why would a big company make a racist commercial? To get people to stop buying their product? I dont think so. All i have to say to people that think this is a racist is suck it up and stop assuming this is racist just because they have a black woman taking off her shirt TRANSITIONING to a white girl. I think everybody knows that Dove soap wont turn you white. They were trying to say Dove works for all skin types. Not that Dove turns you white.
Not even going to justify this. Too much sensitivity. No one thinks soap turns you white and no one thinks that black people have dark skin because of dirt.
It is not the government’s job to regulate morals of companies, so it is important for the community to call out racially offensive advertisements. We, as consumers, have already been exposing wrongful statements made by companies ever since the widespread use of social media. Now, it is more important to learn to criticize companies fairly as our words and opinions hugely affect the success of companies that rely on marketing techniques. In the Dove advertisement, a sequence of three women of diversity was shown taking off their shirts. To the media, this advertisement was deemed racist because it showed the black woman “transforming” into a white woman, implying white supremacy. However, no one who complained discussed the Hispanic woman at the end who completely changes the message of the advertisement. Showing two contrasting people is a comparison, but showing three people is diversity. People, pushed by their own biases, have posted propaganda on social media of this company to try to find faults in the advertisement. We must be careful of how we obtain information as ignorance will lead us to twist the companies’ well thought-out messages into racist notes.
It's all in perspective, some people may see it as racist due to how it had to be an African American women to white women. However, there are people who look deeper into the meaning of the ad to not assume that it is racist. Although, this is not the first time Dove has been accused of a racist ad.
I do believe this ad is racist because it seems like once the colored lady washes her body off with the Dove soap , she turns into a white women. However , this picture doesn't show the whole Ad . After ,the white lady a Spanish women had appear when the white lady took off her shirt. It was basically was showing the colored lady was dirty and as the other lady took off there shirts the lady got cleaner.
I do not believe this ad is racist. All it was trying to convey was that dove is good for all skin types. I'm sure if it was the other way around, showing a white person switching to black, most people would not consider it racist, because that is the society we live in today. When you watch the whole video, it shows another skin type too. The person who screenshotted this add failed to add that part, making the whole thing seem discriminating towards black people.
i don´t think this is racist, can be racist depending the way in which you see it, but i do not thing this add is racist, at least not so racist...
This ad is not racist. I believe that there was no racist meaning behind the ad. People who say it is racist probably didn’t see the whole thing. I believe that the idea behind this ad was to be a creative way of showing many different and diverse people all using the dove product and all getting great results. I do not think it was trying to say that using the product will change a person’s race. I think it was made to celebrate the beauty of diversity all coming together and treated great with the product. That being said, I believe dove could’ve dealt with the backlash better. They should’ve told the story they were trying to tell and backed up the positive meaning behind the ad. I believe that before people start making accusations about things, they should at least get all the information on the subject first.
This ad is racist, but it didn't seem intentional. It shows a women of color taking off her nude shirt after using dove soap and transforming into a lighter women, and this process happens twice. Personally I believe dove just tripped and missed a step, but at the same time I don't know how they didn't see the racism impacted in the video. Their advertisements should be evaluated by a lot of people, so they fact that this ad made it to social media is very suprising and confusing. Next time they should look at the ad from multiple angles, and really pay attention.
This ad is only racist if you let it be. But before you form your opinion you need to find the whole ad. The whole ad features three women, a black woman, a white woman, and of possibly Asian descent (I'm not completely sure though), morphing into each other with the dove soap in front of them.
Dove is known for celebrating women of diversity and their beauty. So it's no surprise they used women of different diversities. I think their intentions were pure but they just missed the mark that they were trying to convey.
What really bothers me is how news sites, which are supposed to inform the public, cut out half of the ad which can totally change how you view the ad. How about next time you include the whole ad so that we can form our opinions knowing the whole story.
The ad looks as if to lead to the public think using Dove body wash can change someone’s race, so it is racist.
The company should issue a formal public apology for bad effect caused.
With a respect way to make produce that can better avoid culturally and racially advertising.
The companies show any advertising that should be positive because everyone and every group need take responsibility for social and public.
This advertisement about the product Dove is considered racist. A group of people should take a review of ads before companies publish it. Some people cannot understand the truth message that the company would like to transmit. Even, some companies could have offensive ads that are culturally and racially offensive to get attention. Anyway, we are human beings and we can be wrong, but if a company make “tone-deaf” ads, marketers and product designers should give and apology. They should reassure that the information about they would like to give doesn’t be repeated again with a harmful message which hurts other people feelings.
we have no doubt that this commercial shows the change from one color to another, many black people are offended by this commercial as others, in the other hand, think about racism in this moment. where there are equal rights and everyone can say and think whatever they want. That would not be racism. the commercial is not saying that white people are the only ones who can buy this soap or something like this. people should overcome racism and know that we are all the same. we should stop giving importance to accompanies that maybe want to get more recognition and be more named. Can this be a sales strategy?.
Is this Ad Racist? My opinion the propaganda (DOVE) shows at first glance racist act since it is observed as a woman of dark skin to transform itself into a white skin after using this product, but when observing a third woman that shows another color of skin. The Propanganda wants to show its effect among the three types of skin most common among society, given that there is a splendid skin color in each of the women and the exchange shirt does not want to show dirt or any kind of racism if not give way to the next woman of common skin. this proves that the product gives the best results in all skin types.
I first saw only a snippet of the ad on social media, which only showed the transition between the black woman and the white woman. From that image alone, I did at first believe the ad was racist and poorly made. I was stunned by it so much that I tried to find the entire ad, hoping to redeem the company whose products I currently buy and use. When I saw that the video displayed multiple women, of multiple different ethnic groups, removing their shirts to reveal the next, I understood the video's purpose of representing diversity in order to sell their product. However, I still think it was poorly made. When the ad was finished and was being reviewed by Dove before being released, I think they should have more considerate of the messages the ad could have made. People who know the long and horrible history of racial discrimination and segregation understand how "uncleanliness' has always been associated with black people by racists in the United States. The company made a mistake by showing an ad that was too closely related to a very sensitive topic.
I think this advertisement is not racist. People become so sensitive in things that related to skin color and they saw the advertisement is Racist. I think the company wants to show in this advertisement that everyone from anywhere can use it and will have a good result. the company wanted to show the diversity of people can use Dove products. The advertisement didn’t show a black woman turns to same white women when she uses Dove. People should be more open minded and do not give issues more than should deserve.
If really this ad is not racist, why they didn’t start with the white woman taking off the shirt and transferred to a black woman? Why they did the opposite? That means that there is something not clear. this ad shows that black women are not clean or not elegant as nearly as the white women. Whatever the reason, the goal, or the mentality of the people who made this ad, it still showing one things which is when you use the Dove soap you will transfer from dark to clear skin. The problem is that all the people who watch this ad and precisely the children will automatically learn that the black women are dirty so they need Dove to be clean, or they are not like they should be so they need Dove to be good as other white women. I recommend to delete this ad because it is really racist and will give to our children a bad view of black women. Also, this company must be suspected because they use the “tone-deaf” in ads without being equal.
I think this is about an advertising campaign they just wanted to put two different skin color for people to behave the proper functioning of the product in advertency we can notice that there isn`t much difference between the two woman only one was removed and the other didn’t, in my opinion it was good idea of the company to put the two skin color there is can be noticed that there isn`t racism.
In my opinion this ad is racist, the racist soap ads of the nineteenth or early twentieth century that showed black people scrubbing their skin to become white. At some point, all the people and company, we have to ask for an apology and we probably have ended up also getting a bad apology. When it comes to retaining loyal customers, a good apology is your first line of defense. think marketers and product designers can better give ads, taking into the discipline to human and the give values to offer the product.
In this ad, I did not see a really evidence of racist. I agree with Dove. They only wanted to show diversity, and show that their produces are for everybody. I think what happen is that many people have frustration about be black people, and whatever thing that they see, they took it like personal issue. If you are comfortable with yourself, you do not care about what other people say or think about your race, color, or personality. At least that it affects you directly. It different if some person come to you and tell you offense about your color, race, or personality. Then you have to doing something because you have to defend yourself. I think all the people are the same, it does not matter your racial color.
Showing black woman transition to a white woman in this ad is being racist. This ad telling black people are dirty and they need to be clean. The ad is telling people that they your skin is dark and they need to change it. Using the Dove body wash will make them whiter. I think this ad is sending the wrong message to the people. The color of your skin is not something they can change you are born with it. No one should change who you are or color of your skin.
This Ad is racist because this shows as if the black woman is dirty and this soap helps her to clean her skin to be like the white woman. The companies should respond well if they make "deaf" ads because there are people who get offended by these ads and they should respect people for their race. The sellers and product designers can avoid culturally or racially offensive advertising without showing any difference between cultures. The companies do not have the social or moral obligation to create culturally sensitive ads and it is not acceptable to do what is necessary to get attention if not things that do not offend others or bring them any problem.
In this commercial, I didn’t see any racist. The company Dove is trying to call the attention showing three different beautiful women with different color of hair and skin, and they are the same wearing. Each company is should be responsibility about what they put in the TV or first demonstrate to supervisor of tv the contain of campaign, the supervise have to cheek if that campaign no have nothing against or nothing what can hurt anybody. Many markets can help to join with different people doesn’t matter the color of skin or where they come from, in the world exist diversity of cultures. The campaign doesn’t need to show or demonstrate the product what they are showing are much better than the others products and mentions other products to sell more, that look really unprofessional and that situation created many inequalities on the tv.
I think the ad it is racist however, was not intentional. Dove is a famous brand that would not risk its name for a scandal and less if it’s about racism. The problem was the initial message was lost, was a misunderstood that the people in charge of make the ad forgot. Additional, the people always is finding the most minimal mistake to start complaining about everything. We have to learn to not take everything so personal. We are in the XXI century and its incredible that still exists the racism and worst people who always are repairing what the other people say to blame someone of racist. Dove did not have the intention to make a racist ad, we are being humans and we make mistakes every time, there is no reason to condemn it. Dove learned this lesson for the next time.
In this article, ‘It This Ad Racist?’ in New York Times, it mentioned this GIF of Dove which a black woman removed her brown shirt, she turned white women in a light shirt. Some people interrupted this GIF as black people can be clean like white people if black women wash with this Dove and they interrupted black people are dirty. I think it’s ad racist because this ad is comparing black women and other light skin color people. Sometimes, words and expressions are related to discrimination even if people are not racist. Grasping way the gift of the words and expressions not for speaker, it’s for the listener. I think the Dove isn’t racist because they apologized for the ad, but they should know how to describe and sympathize with all of the colors. it’s not topic only for Dove, also us.
I think racist is a bad thing for humanity. People don’t want to mix each other. One person can give another limit. For dove wash. It is different because it is an advertisement for the company. They want to make more money. They want to sell more products but people understand different. It doesn’t have anything with racist. This is an advertisement.
I do not think so this ad make about racist. It just a ad is not showing any criticism for being racist about whit and black women. dove company is a multinational company in the world. dove product use every where in the world and there product use all color peoples. so it dose not any make sence for racist whit and black it just a mistake
In the article “Is This Ad Racist?” about (DOVE), which was posted last week in a Facebook. Maggie Astor writes, her opinion, and put this publicity(DOVE) A offending the women of color, trying to show them, as a “dirty” people, and gives us as an example, what ruined a company in 1921, which already had in the market 46 years, and to put an advertisement between a white boy and black boy, showing racism. That was the cause of this company fall. I think the Dove company, did not have bad intentions, they will not create if its own collapse, but did not study well the way to attract more sales, causing a terrible offense to women of color, and losing much of their customers.
my opinion about this Ad it doesn't contain any racist. It still just an Ad material for consume without backgrounds. I think the Dove company one of the biggest company in the world that's care about beauty and fashion of women and men never made a mistake suchlike this one (racism) and they never give a bad image to them because they will just lost their costumer .so its just a Ad without intention and the best thing that's Dove gives apologize for all people that's mean just a misunderstanding
in my opinion this Ad doesn’t work well because the public opinion understand that dove clean the black woman to white woman, so this Ad offends to the black woman and Show it on the basis that it is dirty. with a sensitivity between black people and white people, they should do the same color of skin of the woman in the Ad or show many women from different countries in the word ,to be general not only for the black and white woman for all weman. This Ad probably will open another problem between the blacks and whites, so they need to be careful before they do any ads.
Many years ago, any kind of thing that happen when is a black person, it considered racist why? I did not see any kind of racist, it is just an Ad, where there are different women so, is just a job for a company, who are interesting to give the participation to all people, does not matter, race or color. This company is representation of beauty and skin care for all us. They show the diversity of the beauty. But maybe many people felt offend to this ad and I do not think is a dove company intention. Even if the company make the advertising and they just have a white person, this is going to be a problem too, so personally I think is depend how your interpreter this ad. Many companies are using the varieties of people to make everybody felt comfortable.
My own opinion is that even this company apologized about the meaning of the ad, I think this create a lot of controversial thoughts and ideas. Because what this is trying to demonstrate is that the colored people is dirty, and it is not what really is.
Being from another nationality or race doesn’t mean that the white skin is better or superior than others…
And we as a reasonable people have to admit that this is the kind of factors that make the world unkinder, intolerant, racist, hostile among other lack of values.
We all are one, we all are human being and we all deserve and need the same respect.

The ad itself is not racist because dove is trying mix women of different color. I don’t understand what is the problem here. I don’t see anything wrong with this ad. A black woman takes of her top, the ginger white woman takes off her top, then a Latin woman is at the end. The message is Dove is for all skin types. I have seen other ads similar to ad of dove where people use different skin color, and I never saw a problem for that reason. For me many ads use people of different skin color not used racist.
In my opinion, yes is it because to simple view I understood that the black lady is nasty or disgusting or something like that and that the white lady is the opposite and what the black lady want to be and the for that reason she uses Dove. The should answer or explain “tone-deaf” ads? because the people could understand things totally different to what they want to express and that could be a big problem. They can avoid problems with culturally and racially offensive advertising if they check first if the ads have something wrong or offensive for other people. The companies in my opinion need create ads with all culture and don’t make that the people feel bad because the companies need of the people for grow up if the people feel bad don’t aren’t going to buy or use his products or services.
In my opinion this Dove ad is Racist, because in USA every here especially black and white people was not like each other. In USA every here racist and they conflict each other. May be this ad remained the people of racist. So that ad is not perfect way to improved their business and stop this ad. Of course every companies should response to made ad. Some companies they did not check anything about their product and also their ad. That’s way big impact in society.
I think ad markers and product designers can better avoid culturally and religion offensive. Other ways big conflict in our culturally. Time to very carefully to made ad and their product. Companies should be response to a social and moral obligation to create culturally sensitive to their product design and companies should be check their ad or product was not racist.
Dove has always support the diversity, in this commercial they are showing a black girl and after using their products they showed a white girl. Nowadays people are skeptical to any racist situation. The social media is controlling and showing just this part of the entire commercial to make them look racist. The represents of Dove appeared apologizing and saying that was not the intention of the commercial and they are sorry that people got a wrong message. I think that they did not wanted to be racist but they lose their focused and purpose with this commercial because of this they have apologized with their public.
If the advertisement had been made in a vacuum, it could have a reasonable defense against accusations of racism. However there is a history of advertisers advertising products that "clean" people with darker skin into lighter skin, an idea which this ad, even unintentionally, propagates. Unintentional consequences are exactly why advertisements go through a review process. And if it was intentional, as the spokeswoman seems to suggest, exploiting racism to get more views is simply immoral.
In my opinion, the Dove commercial itself is not racist, though it does, probably inadvertently, perpetuate racial stereotypes and extend historical racist tropes. First of all, I don't think that there was any racist intent behind the commercial. This is made clear through Dove's apology and removal of the advertisement from social media. However, there is a very real historical precedent that justifies the comparison of this commercial to past, explicitly racist commercials.
I think that if a company makes a "tone-deaf" ad, they should respond by making sure that their true intentions are clear, and by apologizing to the affected groups or people. But I don't believe that focus should be on damage control after an ad has been aired; it should, instead, be on avoiding these situations. One important way that advertisers could better avoid offensive marketing is by hiring people from more diverse backgrounds that can offer insight into how a certain cultural or racial group may view an ad.
Though there is a lot of discussion about political correctness and the seemingly heightened sensitivity of our time, I do believe that companies have an obligation to create culturally sensitive ads. When someone is given a platform, they have to consider those that take their cues from their content. If a major company seems to espouse a certain insensitive viewpoint, they must consider that some people will see it as an excuse to justify their own insensitive views--or worse, actions.
The ad itself isn't racist, and this image shown cuts out another part with the latina girl taking off the white shirt. While the ad is trying to express that their products are for people off all ethnicities and races I don't see how they could possible think this is a good idea. I mean out of all ideas I'm sure they had at least thought of better ways than to have someone taking off their skin and matching clothes as if it's dirty laundry.
The convolutions that surround the different idealizations or rather definitions of the word “racist” makes this much harder to interpret. Given that the Gif moved from the Caucasian women to another woman of color, I can not see how the ad may have been racist. Even in our assumption that it was racist, we ourselves have become racist. Given that our minds so quickly went to the racially-sensitive stereotype that African American women may have been perceived as “dirty” in contrast to the Caucasian women who is perceived as “clean” . However, regardless of the stereotypes and crude idealizations society has developed the ad was not racist. Or at least that racist component is broken by the women presented to us at the end of the Gif which was also a woman of color.
I think it is racist, it does look wrong when colored person turns into a white person. I think companies can avoid offensive things by adding ALL types of races not just the most known and targeted.
I didn't necessarily think that the ad was racist within itself, it was made racist through the public eye. I was not able to watch the full commercial myself, but I am aware that there were at least 3 women in this ad, and the image that has been given to us only emphasizes the transition from a colored woman to a white woman, which clearly shows me that news outlets wants to create a public outcry of racism where racism was never intended to be, with a lack for better words, it's ridiculous. I believe the whole purpose of introducing different races in the mix of the advertisement was to add diversity and show that Dove's product works for everyone. However, due to societies absurd cultural sensitivity, this ad is outrageous! Let us have add gasoline to already engulfed tensions of racism by incorrectly interpreting an advertisement that had a main purpose of showing that their product works for all types of people. I do not believe this topic would have been an issue, or even have been talked about if the order of the women in the advertisement would have been different (i.e the white woman first, then the colored woman). Aren't we all racists ourselves for assuming that an innocent advertisement is racist because of the order of the women illustrated in the ad? What does that have to say about our current thinking of beliefs in regards to the color of people's skin?
I surely believe, there were many other ways “Dove” Was able to promote their “diversity” within their company. Although this ad didn’t really hit the point that dove wanted to make, others would have still found a way to change the way the ad was presented. Also, dove does have a history of pass publications that have triggered the racial discrimination area. So why do it again?
Ok, but now for the big marketing question: would this short GIF have ever worked? My answer is no:
White, colored, colored: 'whites always get first place'
Colored, white, colored: 'ah the white woman is the cleaner version of the colored woman, that's racist'
Colored, colored, white: 'ah the white woman is the cleanest version of the colored women, that's racist'
They should have never released this short gif, but stuck to the longer video with 7 women. Even then they would have received critical reviews..because people are racially sensitive...but that would have somewhat saved it, in my opinion.
I believe Dove did not intentionally make a racially contraversal advertisement. Personally when I am working on any kind of creative project, something that involves brainstorming ideas, when I think I've found a good idea it is hard for me to think of it negatively. I presume that is what happened, whoever came up with the advertisement probably didn't think of in in depth, at least not in the way that would make his/her creation negative. People are proud of what they do, ego is important and your brain knows that, so instead of letting the negativity into your brain blinds you.
Since there is only one multicolored biological DNA genetic evolutionary fit human race species that began in Africa 300,000+ years ago this ad is not racist.
What we call race aka color is related to the varying levels of solar radiation at altitudes and latitudes with regard to the production of Vitamin D and protecting genes from damaging mutations.
What we call race aka color is a malign socioeconomic political educational historical white supremacist American myth meant to morally and legally justify humanity denying African enslavement and equality defying separate and unequal African Jim Crow.
Color is not race. Color is color. And beauty is in the eyes, heart and mind of the beholder. In my eyes, heart and mind Michelle Obama is beautiful. While Melania Trump is not.
Is that racist? No it is human.

I agree

If the ad was just the image that accompanies the story, it would be racist and imply that the black woman became a "clean" white woman. But that's not the whole ad! The next shot is the white woman removing her shirt and under that is an Asian or Latina woman. No, the ad is not racist. However, this is really bad journalism, and gives kids the wrong message.
Although you "corrected" the copy to link to the original ad, you still have a misleading photo leading the story! Please correct the image and then ask for comments!

The amount of unwarranted controversy surrounding the recent Dove body wash ad is interesting to say the least. The fact that so many people are choosing to form opinions based on incomplete or partial evidence is astounding considering half the original GIF was completely ignored. Blind anger and fury will never solve a problem where there is none.
Furthermore, in the past five years, Dove has been making strides to empower people of all races and colors. This includes making advertisements as diverse as possible, such as with the controversial ad in question. That being said, is an advertisement for body wash really worth fighting for?
1
It's only racist if you cut half of the ad out - as the New York Times did here - in order to make it appear racist.
Natalie Proulx: if your intention is to educate students you should encourage them to seek out and view the ad in its entirety before forming an opinion. That's called research and thinking for yourself.

You don't seem to know that biological science recognizes only one multicolored human race species that began in Africa 300,000+ years ago.
While American socioeconomic political educational historical white supremacist malign myth made color into "race".
You need to follow your own advice.
ps. About 2-5% of European and Asian DNA is extinct Neanderthal and Denovisan. There is none in Sub-Saharan African heritage populations.

Blackmamba:
I'm not sure why you're addressing this to me.
I didn't say anything at all that would indicate a lack of awareness about the nature of the human species. I did the research years ago.
The New York Times rolled in the dirt with its reporting on this issue. They showed only a snippet of the ad in question, carefully edited to give the appearance that an innocent, if misguided advertisement is racist.
To the other students who have been invited to comment on the ad:
Don't assume that the story as it is presented here is unbiased and complete. Think for yourself. Don't depend on journalists to think for you. Do the research and view the ad in its entirety before you commit to publishing an opinion.

Thank you for this comment. Though the advertiser has pulled the original, we changed our first sentence to make it clear students should watch the ad in full before making a judgement.

Thank you so much Ms. Schulten for saying this, and for providing the link to the full advertisement. That's good journalism, and the standard most of us hope for from the Times.
I wrote two comments on the original article by Maggie Astor, which were not published. I suggested that Maggie Astor has almost certainly damaged her journalistic credibility with her original article, and her failure to include a link to the original link prominently displayed. She's at the beginning of her career and still has a choice. It's not too late to steer away from spin and sensationalism, or to take a stand for honesty and integrity in journalism and grow in to the kind of writer that people trust.

This ad is absolutely racist in showing that once one showers with Dove, that person can become "clean," or in this case, become white. This implies that white people are "clean," and colored people should strive to become "clean," or white. It advertises that one can become white in using their product, where being white has a positive connotation, and being black has a negative connotation. Even if the Dove company were striving to show diversity, the fact that only African American, Caucasion, and Hispanic women were portrayed in this ad shows that they did not fully represent the diversity in America. If they were to show diversity, they should include others as well. The other races were incredibly misrepresented in this ad.
If they continued to have the white woman take off her shirt, and showed other races underneath the shirt, such as Asians, then the ad would display the theme of racial diversity better.
That's exactly what they did. Watch the full ad.
1
This ad isn't racist since the Dove company wasn't trying to deliver the same message that society has conveyed it as. While the still picture of the black woman transforming into a white woman might enrage some, if people had seen the full ad, they would learn that the white woman would later take off her shirt and change into a Hispanic woman. Dove was only trying to show how all races could use their soap and their support for diversity.
1
I think that this ad is, in fact, very racist. It is implying that dark-skinned women are "impure" and that they should use Dove soap to become whiter, and thus "purer." If companies make such tone-deaf ads like this one, the best response to the outcries would be to apologize for the misconception and mistake, and then tweak the ad to have a much more positive message. I also believe that there is no way to avoid such misconceptions until the ad is released to the public. Many people would not think of such racist interpretations until others notify them of it. This is completely not acceptable, in my personal opinion.
Yes, the advertisement by dove is racist. This is due to the fact that Dove is a well known soap company. This ad is a before and after look at dove soap where at first the woman is colored and dirty whereas the next woman is white and clean. This implies racism because it conveys the message that people who are colored are dirty compared to people who are white are pure.
I have contradicting feeling regarding if this ad is racist or not. The women are taking off shirts that are the same color as their skin, which I find has nothing to do with the actual product. This is unnecessary and blatantly rude. However, on the other hand, in today's society we can always find a way for something to be racist by manipulating it. The company is not directly displaying racism and it is up to us if we think it is racist or not. If something that was racist was clearly stated or somehow clearly evident, then it would be a larger problem. However, this is not the case, and it depends on the viewer's prospective. Viewers may say that by taking off the shirts it shows how Dove is used by all races, while others may say the opposites. Thus, the aspect of racism in this ad is up to the viewers.
This ad is definitely racist keeping in mind that it is a commercial for Dove. Dove makes soaps, scrubs, and body cleaning products. The ad portrays the African American women as dirty or unclean and shows the white women as pure which is discriminatory.
the fact is that thier is always that one person on soical media thats racist so you should just try to be the better person and tell them to stop being rasice like if you put a confedericate flag out side than you are a raicst person but you can express your feeling legally
The fact that social media has literally cut a third of the ad out in order to push this narrative is indication enough that it's not racist in context, only out of context. This may make it tone-deaf, but clearly no offense was intended. That said, I try to understand positions different from mine, and do think someone in Marketing should have noticed the potential to offend.
1
This ad was stupid and dumb and dumber. Unilever ought to take more care.
I get how someone can find this racist. However, that same person is probably searching for racism in everything.
1
I absolutely believe that Dove had no intention of being 'racists', and only the extreme-PC culture would call it that.
There is literally no mention at all about how the white-woman then turns into an asian woman.
Is that racist as well?
This reminds me of the Detroit firefighter who was fired for bringing in a watermelon for his crew to share, or people who get triggered seeing cotton plants in a floral arrangement.
It's a sick and twisted mindset that turns trivia into 'racism' strictly for the benefit of the accuser.
4
Your belief that color and geography and nationality have anything to do with "race" results from a combination of your biological scientific and American socioeconomic political historical ignorance and confusion. There is only one multicolored biologcal human race.
My black African American ancestors were enslaved and owned by and bred with my white European Georgia ancestors until William T. Sherman and his troops came by. In America we were and still are all and only black African American.
1
I really don't think it's racially insensitive. It's a really weird idea for an ad and it wasn't executed very well, but everyone is taking out the context of the white woman changing into a mixed woman. I think that the ad is meant to represent that it works great on all skin colors and types, but it was just not very well done. There's bigger fish to fry, like the riots in Charlottesville and Russia's influence on America.
1
When i first saw this ad, I didn't see anything wrong with it. I saw it for what it was, an ad displaying the diversity of a client pool. No, this ad is not racially insensitive. I would say instead that people have become racially sensitive. This is partially a good thing. It means we've come to a place where we can support each other in the little thing. Emphasis on little things because this ad is not as big a deal as people made it out to be. On the other hand we make molehills into mountains and racism gas become just a black and white issue when there are so many other races involved. If she tool off the shirt to reveal an asian woman, would things be the same and if that asian woman was the one that revealed the white woman, would there still be outrage. Probably not. Honestly there are better things to worry about other than Dove ads. You want to worry about racism? look outside of your facebook ad feed and worry about the people next to you.
4
Sadly, what you suggested is exactly what actually happens next in the frame. The white woman removed her shirt to reveal an Asian woman. There are so many real instances of racism, in our country. I agree with you, let's focus on those!
