Mrs. Williams' group (Madison, WI)
I see a lot of people on a busy street during the day. Many people are wearing business clothes and have ID badges around their neck. One woman has her phone close to her face, and another person is putting their hands up. There are a lot of cars. People are holding signs, and there are street lights. Damian thinks people have tags so people are coming from their job. I think people are waiting for a announcement . I think people are coming from their cars, and they’re being really patient and waiting nicely even though there's traffic. Maimun think there's a traffic jam. Harsheni thinks it's a traffic jam, and a busy street. Djaoued thinks that someone important is there or those people are protesting. I think those people are busy.
Emily Belair part 1 (tcs)
In the picture I see lots of people wearing business suits. I also see booths, tour busses and signs. Then I see that everyone is surrounding cars and some people are holding clipboards. There is signs around the cars. What I think is going on in this picture is that there is a flea market. The picture could be the happening of something like a business convention. I think that the picture is a business event because first of all I see business tags around the peoples neck. So maybe they are part of a car business, some type of company that they need a tag to get in the doors or to show who they are and other details. The busses could be transporting the people that are in the picture from possibly, their company or other. Also I think that maybe it's in another country because the signs are in a different language. The cars, they might be selling them, showing the design model or doing something else business related, and there could be a chance the entire thing is a car showing or a car related event.
Robert O. (New York )
In this picture, I think that all of these people are protesting and it is not in the U.S.
Tajmere C (Palmdale)
In this picture I see that it takes place in a very congested foreign country. I say that because a high percentage of the people look like they are from the Mideast. I also see where it might be a protest going on and or a lot of people maybe voting for something.
DeQuincy Davis (wilmington nc)
I believe in this picture that people are debating and voting for something. Also they are holding up signs blocking off traffic, and people are marching every where.
Angel H (Pennsylvania)
Angel H it's obviously a country that speaks spanish but the name of the country i haven't got a clue i know it might be A protest or strike but honestly it might not be I don't understand to much spanish but it could be a traffic jam but then again it could be advertisement but i don't think it is cause the signs say things like piso b-6 or a-5
Agueda Ayala (Mexico )
For the characteristics of the people I think this image is located in Mexico, also some people are holding advertisement which are in spanish, too in the back of the trucks it says "Ruta 2". Mexico is a city with overpopulation, here as we see are demostrating that and how that is affecting the passage of cars.
Kieran .S (wisconsin)
When I look at this picture it reminds me of a Cam I use to go to.(Honey Rock) So when I got there I need to find my group and there were many different types of groups Like group A-2 or B-2 and many more like that. So it look like foreign people are at this meeting at maybe India because of the way they look or its a globe meeting some were or protest on something. I am saying this because I have see on on the News and been to on and it king of look like a flee mark because of tents but not really because it is just one tent so probably a tent for people to buy signs and stuff.
Londyn (HHHS)
In this picture I see that it takes place in a busy foreign country. I say that because a high percentage of the people look like they are from the Mideast. Also there are signs I can't understand and vehicles in the back that don't look familiar. Another thing I see that I find odd is the giant traffic light that is green yet there are thousands of people in the middle of the street. In the background you can see the sidewalk is wide open in the left side of the picture.
Isha N (Sammamish, Washington)
I think what is going on this picture is that there is some kind of protest it which the people in a certain town are maybe protesting the government, this might explain the extremely large crowd that is gathered, blocking the streets. An event of people gathering in this magnitude in the middle of the street and stopping cars; could most likely be a political protest.
maddie b (NJ)
There is some sort of festival going on but it does not look like a rally or protest because the people seem calm. There are busses, car, and tents set up that appear to be involved in the event
Regan C Sera (Canada)
We see a parking lot and people getting out of their cars to go to a festival and convention of some kind. (Grade 1/2 students)
Nathan Johnson (CSRMS)
i see a bunch of people standing around. It looks like they are waiting for something or some kind of announcement. It looks like a different country because of the different languages on the signs people are holding up. My opinion is that they are waiting for interviews for the World Cup qualifiers.
César Esquer D (Obregon)
I see in the picture a lot of people walking down the street stopping all the cars in the streets and doing like a kind of crowd for something because they are blocking everything and walking slow and some people are recording everything that is happening, in my opinion it is a protest.
Luis Fernando Yepiz (Mexico)
I see like a thousand of people in the street. I see a traffic light, also I lots of cars. Also there is a bus. I think that they´re protesting something that they dont like because when people is angry and protesting things, they stop cars across the street. Also I see tents.
enissa (ottawa)
It seems like people are protesting something, because the people are walking on the road and the traffic looks like stop.I saw few scared people and worried. But at the same time few people are smiling and laughing.Actually I have same idea with last week.I can't find differences.Still it looks like they are protesting something.
wahib (ottawa)
Its a picture was taken after the earthquake that happened recently in Mexico. it shows the peoples reaction to what happened and its obviously in the middle of the street. most people there are shocked and scared because the earthquake hit Mexico pretty badly. the earthquake killed more than 200 people, 21 of them are students, it also caused a huge damage in the mexican states of Puebla and Morelos and in the greater Mexico city area.
Maryan (Ottawa)
This picture was taken in mexico after the tremendous earthquake because if you look closely you can see a woman who looks like she's in pain and being carried by two men. The picture looks like it's in the middle of the street as you can see by the street light
LEO (Ottawa)
so basicly this picture is from mexico from the earthquake that happened in there and people look scared in the middle of the street some of them got hurt some of them trying to call somebody and some of them looks important because most of them are wearing badges . ;)
Ms. W's Class (USA)
I think it is the Barcelona Protest.
Ms Ransom (Sandy UT)
Here's the best response from one of my students this week: Luke D. Even though Luke's guess turned out to be wrong, he does a great job of organizing his thoughts around a central theory, supported by detailed observations. "I think this picture was taken in Spain after part of the country chose to be independent, and I think this picture was taken in Barcelona specifically because of how many people there are in the picture. All of the people look to be Spanish, and I think they are swarming the streets because they want a revolt to happen. There seems to be some Spanish officers in the bottom of the picture who are helping people who might have been injured by others who did not vote the way they did. In the back half of the picture the citizens look to be facing the other way and I think there are a lot of white shirts in the back half. The cars definitely are in no condition to drive because of the swarm of people, so I think they were put there instead of black barriers like in a restaurant because the people can't knock them over if a fight brakes out. I think this is important because it teaches us about the Spanish government and what happened to the country just recently."
Theo (Tampa)
I think that this is some sort of strike against a company or something. There are a lot of people wearing white shirts and ties. There are also people holding signs that say "piso" which means floor in Spanish, so they could be striking a certain department on that particular floor. The amount of people in the street could be people blocking a business, like picketing.
Jaqueline Ruiz (Walla Walla)
I think that there is a traffic jam. All these people are trying to get to where they need to go. But there is cars and people all over the street. Seems like all these people work together because they are all wearing the same tag. There is a man holding up a sign with the number 1. And they are all dressed formally.
JG (Garrison)
I think that people are angry at something or someone.
HaloSally Homeschool (California)
We think that a parade is going on because there are so many people in the street. There is a bus & a white tent.We think it was takin in El Salvador because there are signs that have spanish words on them.
ABCC (washington ww)
lots of people, confusion is going around, traffic jam
MeanLeanMemeMachine (Your mom)
Man, the line for the new IPhone dips huge
Brayden (SMS)
I don't agree hasn't came out yet
Ashten (SMS)
I think that you should give more informashon about what you think whats going to happen but your geting close
Boisterous Bards (Duluth MN)
It seems to be a peaceful protest or march of some sort. There are lots of people walking on the street, holding signs. The “Piso” signs make it seem organized. The signs are in Spanish. Perhaps this is a group of people in Caledonia who are seeking their independence from Spain.
Nicole (sms)
I agree that its a protest.
Brianna C. (SMS)
I agree but it was about a flood that happened in Mexico. They were trying to find shelter or get out of Mexico. I was just replying because my teacher told me to.
Riley's Rabble Rousers (Duluth, MN)
At first, we thought this might be a protest. But they look too stoic and calm to be protesting. The signs, the professional clothing, and the tents suggest that it may be a job fair. We also feel that this isn’t located in the United States because of the way the people look, and the different language on the signs.
Rhea S (Seattle)
I think this image is showing people evacuating a building after the recent earthquake in Mexico. I think so because there are people holding signs that say piso, which means "floor" in Spanish. Quite like our emergency drills, employees are supposed to gather around their floor number, so everyone can be accounted for.
Ximena Hurtado (Mexico )
A00227094 Ximena What i see in this image is a group of people marching to commemorate "La Matanza de Tlatelolco" that took place in Mexico city on October 2, 1968. The event occurred when a group of students were marching against the government because of the Olympic Games that were going to take place in Mexico. The police attacked the students and many of them were killed. Since then, every October 2nd Mexican people remember this day.
Julie Eastman (Napa, CA)
Our sixth grade class thinks this photo may be from Mexico or another place in Latin America after a recent earthquake or disaster. We predict this because the raised signs say Piso with a number and letter, and piso means floor in Spanish. The people do not appear happy and they are huddled together holding up signs in the middle of a crowded city. There is a person with a megaphone trying to talk to the group. The people seem to be trying to communicate or locate others with their signs.
Superfine Language Arts (Illinois)
I think this is Seattle or California because when I went to Seattle I saw that many people on a crowded street. I think it is Seattle because it is like the Pike Place because it was crowded and it was were the first Starbucks was and a lot of people like Starbucks. I think the signs are street signs because street signs are usually by street lights. They are usually by street lights because that can guide the car to go where they are going. Or it can be Florida because of the hurricane everyone is trying to evacuate and store up on food and water. It can be the hurricane because everyone was evacuating and getting food for their family. Or it could be Mexico because the picture has words that are Spanish so it can be Mexico. It can be a holiday or festival in Mexico. This could also be somewhere in Asia because china and Asia is one of the most population.
Guillermo Francisco Valadez García (Mexico)
In the picture it seems that people are protesting for a kind of policy that the government put them but they do not like that. Theres is a lot of traffic and the peoples who are driving can not pass because there are people who are protesting for some reason and that people is angry.
Rohi Osuna (Mexico)
I see a lot of people walking on the street with signs, maybe protesting for something because the most of the people are wearing white shirts. The cars are moving very slowly or maybe they are not moving because there are many people who prevent the passage of cars , and finally i guess that they are protesting for a politic fact.
Juan Pablo Muro (Mexico)
In this picture i see a big crowd of people on the street probably like Mexico City there are people of different characteristics. Some of them are workers and other are bosses.I think they are participating in an earthquake drill to be prepare if something happen. These crowds are tipycal in places with large population.
Stephen (Washington)
Due to the words in Spanish and the features of the people, I think this is in a latin American country. All the people and Cars are facing the same way, as well as a cluster of official looking people in the bottom of the picture. These make me think it is a rally since there are no signs making me think this is a protest. Furthermore, the cars all going the same way as well as the top left being very empty signal to me that this is not a normal day.
Julian Madrid (Mexico Cd Obregón)
I think it's a peaceful manifestation against the government (which is the most common nowadays) because of something that they doesn't like or does not seem to them, it could also be a traffic congestion very rare, or something more strange: they are playing Pokemon GO . But I want to think that it is not a foolishness thing related to Pokemon Go.
Rafael Navarro (Mexico)
I see a lo t of people piled up in a street, and a lot of cars around the people. I think they are manifesting something that make a trouble in their life. they look very worried. I think that is a protest because they have banners in their hands and the cars are not moving. They want to change an injustice
charlotte (sms)
I too thought this. I saw the crowd of people and thought that "they are protesting because I see a few people holding signs up".
Esteban castro Becerra (Mexico, sonora, cd obregon)
I thinks that are protesting the most of these people. For something of his work or another work that isnt making the correct for. I can see that the people are in white shirt of his work and are protesting about pizza. I can see that are in teams and have signs for somethings important of pizza. Another thing i can see that people let people ride his cars.
Dylan Z. (Deerfield Il. )
I think this is a protest because the cars aren't moving
Austin (SMS)
same
Brennan (SMS)
I agree
AlaniNaranja (Illinois)
This is definitely in Mexico City, and it’s totally summer, because it’s so sunny out, because in Mexico, it’s warm. I believe people are protesting are voting or something, because they are holding up signs and I can see a megaphone in the photo. My final theory is that it is a protest/vote in Mexico City in the summer, maybe July.
Josh R (Chicago)
I believe people are all waiting for a product that may be going to put them out of business or make them lose money. Most of the people don’t look very happy, but no one looks sad enough to show that something truly terrible happened like people dying.
CamSMS (Illinois)
It seems that in the picture, there is a big state fair or festival going on. It is a big time of the year, and many, many people are there. The men in white suits have something around their neck, so they may be people trying to control the crowd or they are trying to sell something.
Cameron8A (Canada)
8A We think this is a protest against floors or these people may be leaving due to the earthquake in Mexico. Signs may be the communities that got hit.
CHICKEN (chicken)
I think they are mad
me (me)
there in line for a new food place
guy in the bushes (in the bushes)
they are gathered to protest for piso.
savanna stevens (homer)
I think this is some kind of drill to a bisness
Jessie Nimeh (Penfield,NY)
We infer that this is a crowd of people coming out of an office building in a Spanish speaking country because the signs are in Spanish and people are dressed for work. We think it is an evacuation or drill because the people don't look very alarmed and they are standing in an orderly fashion. We think this is taking place in a highly populated country or city.
Zachary boss man Neilson (Homer)
I think it is black friday and every one is gathered to watch a new store open called piso.It is busy
TANNER (SMS)
I agree i think that it may be black friday and that there triing to get to the store
Maximillian Ortega (Beaverton, Oregon)
I'm a student at the Beaverton High, and during observation on the image, I thought that there could have been some kind of drill and/or event that occurred that made the workers go onto the streets. Why I believe this is because of the signs they are holding. To me, it looks like they're are in group. On some of the signs, they have numbers like 6-A or 9-B. It also has the word, "reforma" which is reform obviously. In google reform is,
-make changes in (something, typically a social, political, or economic institution or practice) in order to improve it.
So I guessing that this is a group of workers protesting about something.

Any other thoughts? Add to my thinking please.
BabyPenguin2 (NYC)
I think there is a large group of people most likely protesting.
Math/Tech Class (SDCI)
Workers rally possibly government employees because of the well dressed attire and organization of the event which seems to be impeding traffic intentionally.
We suspect this is in south America in a larger city because of the ethnicity of the people in the picture and their affluence.
Caleb Frustino (Souderton)
This picture has many people in a city street. They look like they are protesting as they take up lots of space and hold signs. The signs are not in English so it is probably not taking place in the United States or any other English speaking country. There does not seem to be any cops patrolling the area, but there doesn't seem to be any fights or aggression either. There are also cars but I can't tell if they're trying to move or are parked. They aren't getting anywhere if they are trying to drive.
Naim Mubarak (Redmond)
I believe this is a group of people in mexico sending prayers to people hit by a hurricane
Mari (Seattle)
I think that there was a major convention taking place in a specific part of a very crowded city when there was suddenly a major accident on the main road such as a gas leak or a car accident which caused a giant traffic jam in which everyone was forced to take a separate road at the same time that there were people trying to get to the convention, causing a major traffic jam. I believe that there is some sort of business conference because many of the people standing in the front are in semi-formal business wear and are holding signs and megaphones.
Naim Mubarak (Redmond)
I believe it is a walkout of some sort or people going out to pray for people hit by the earthquake
Surya G (Redmond,WA)
I think that the people in the picture are gathered around for some strike against the main power in that region meaning the president or mayor. What tells me this is that some people have signs and the crowd is extremely big and this makes me think that there is a huge problem going on for this many people. Other things that i can see are that the general direction of eyes is toward the camera. Also, there are many cars implying that they are blocking the roads.
David S. (Redmond)
In this picture, there it is reasonable to concluded that there’s large protest that is taking place. This claim can be supported by many small details in the photo. For example, it would be reasonable to say that that intersection isn’t functioning like normal, a point that is enforced by the absolute lack of cars moving at a reasonable pace. The shear amount of people just standing around in the middle of the street, it would appear that the disruption is intentional. Another detail is that a portion of the crowd has banners that are commonly used by protesters. The signs say approximately the same thing, which one can infer that the protesters were organized.
Charles B (Redmond,Wa)
I think that there is a event or march happening in the city because of the large amount of people but i dont think it is a protest because of the relatively few amount of signs in the crowd also it is probably in a spanish speaking country because there is spanish on the few signs that there is also it must be a pretty major march because there are people as far as the eye can see also there is a few people marked as security one with a megaphone yelling something
Italian students of 3BTT (10 G) (Chieri, Piedmont, Italy)
What is going on in this picture? The picture shows a mass of people in the street. They might be demonstrating.
What do you see that makes you say that? They are carrying small signs with the Spanish word “Piso”. We might infer they are in Central America, perhaps in Venezuela.

What more can you find? Amid the crowd we can see cars, vans and buses
Naim Mubarak (Redmond)
I believe this is a photo of a school walk out or people praying for people who got hit with the recent hurricane
David L (Redmond)
The majority of this picture is covered with people, a large mass of them that appear to be standing in a street, as evidenced by the surrounding cars. Many of them are also holding street signs that say "Piso [letter]-[number]", and "reforma" in smaller print on the bottom. Many people are also wearing a white shirt of some sort, mostly those with the signs. Many of the people also appear to be Hispanic. Those things said, we can imply that this is some sort of protest in a Spanish-speaking country, most likely for some sort of law that would affect housing or apartments (piso means 'floor' in Spanish). That said, many people in the crowd are also wearing lanyards, which may mean it is an official organized event, which would be something completely different then a protest. Other noticeable, and possibly important things, are that nobody seems to be fighting, so this might be a peaceful protest, as well as that most of the people seem to be older working adults, as judged by their clothing and age, so maybe the group that the proposed law is pertaining to that area of the population.
Sophie (Illinois)
8th Grade- These people are most likely evacuating from an earthquake. The people appear to be Mexican, so they are probably in Mexico City evacuating from the recent earthquake that they went through.
Mikey Gonzales (South Fork Junior High)
Mexicans are mad because they were on their way to a protest but there was a road block so now they are protesting a road block.
7th Grade (Kincaid, Illinios)
This is a roadblock in Mexico that civilians are protesting because the signs are written in Spanish.
6th grade (Kincaid IL)
i think that there is a Mexican party and they are protesting about how there is a huge traffic jam and no one can go anywhere
Anastasia B (WHRHS)
I think it is some kind of planned evacuation from a working building . they are all wearing tags around their necks and their “floors” are separated into sections.
Abby (here)
I think its in mexico because the signs they are holding are written in Spanish
Carter Matthes (RSMS)
I think that this is a riot
jayson shorb (RSMS)
jayson shorb I think that these people are protesters
MAN DUDE BRO (gu)
It is a Protest because of all the signs and the cart with signs and it is funny that it is so crowded and they are on the street yet there is only one person on the sidewalk
Macy McFarlane (RSMS)
This looks to be some type of protest in a different country.
Max Pajewski (63026)
It is probably a protest.
Carter (ssms)
i think it is a protest
Anthony (ghndfhvvst)
they are protesters
Brynn Branscum (RSMS)
I think there might be a big event coming up
Blake Horton (Port Vila, Vanuatu)
They are protesting their work for underpayment and not enough money in Mexico.
Caroline Cole (Rockwood South Middle School)
It is some sort of Holiday that appears to be held in a street where people meet.
anthony valenti (at a place)
I think its some kind of religiuos holiday.
HAiley janke (idk)
black lives matter protests
Kylie Stehlin (RSMS)
I think that there is a very important event going on or they are protesting.
Nick Shannon (RSMS)
It think it is a protest
Dylan (behind you )
I think that it is a march for something
James DeLuca (Fenton Missouri)
They are protesting about something since there is a big crowd, camera crew, police, and they have signs. I would like to mention that waldo is in this picture. He has a beard, no hat or glasses, but he has the same shirt as him. He is by the bus on the left
Cason (SMS)
I agree with James Deluca because I said it was a protest.
billybob Joe (stlouis)
Protest
Ali Findey (RSMS)
I think the signs are in Spanish and they are all dressed up in work cloths and they all seem unhappy, so maybe they are protesting about something.
Nora VanHorn (USA)
The people in the photo are protesting because they only get as low as $1 a week.
Vivian (RSMS)
The signs are in spanish. Piso=floor
Samantha Krauza (Canada)
I think this is a giant group of protesters. The group is so big that its surrounding all the cars and is causing a huge traffic jam. I think the protest is about a new law or Las-Vegas shooting.
Adilyn (Ladysmith Secondary School)
The signs appear to be written in Spanish, and some people look like they're dressed formally and others causally. There are also people holding up signs with the number one on it. Maybe it is some sort of gathering or even a protest. The thing that puzzles me is the cars parked in the street. Would a gathering take place with cars parked in the street? Or is it more of a riot?
wyatt (in your houce )
It is black friday around town
Ben Bonebrake (RSMS)
protesting
Sam Lenhard (Fenton,Mo)
I think they are protesting
Kirsta Burleigh (RSMS)
I think these are business people from a Spanish speaking country.
kaitlyn (mo)

Gemma Stoneman (RSMS)
I look like maybe people rioting.
Grace Battelle (RSMS)
protesting or a parade work event
Jack Manning (yes)
They are protesting for a law that they do not like.
Samantha Scholtz (Fenton MO)
I think they are in Mexico City because piso means floor in spanish
Daniel (USA)
I think that it is a protest in Las veges about the shootout that happend
Drew Beinke (RSMS)
The signs are in Spanish so they're in a Spanish speaking country. Everyone is in business clothes so they might be protesting or gathering after a natural disaster.
Kishan B (Redmond)
It seems like the crowd is from a Spanish speaking country. My prediction is that the crowd is gathering after one of the natural disasters that has affected some of the countries such as the hurricanes or earthquake because those things have been in the news a lot lately
Juliana (New Jersey)
It could be a building is being evacuated maybe as an earthquake drill and is mostly in a Spanish speaking country maybe Mexico or even they could be protesting for rights or protesting for wages or anything
Oscar Sucre (Watchung Hills Regional High School)
This looks like it's in a developed city and its very populated also it seems to be like they're striking. This is because they are holding posters up and are contesting the streets so they can't move. I believe it to a strike or protest against a maltreatment towards them.
Chloe B (WHRHS)
This is a big city i assume in a spanish speaking country. Everyone is dressed really well. The signs say floor whatever and the people seemed to be grouped by floor. The cars seem to be evacuated and there is a lot of concern in the people's expressions.
Aaliyah B. (Warren, NJ)
There’s a lot of traffic and there is a lot going on in the cities.
Kevin (Ryan)
Watchung Hills Regional Highschool I see a large crowd in the streets. Could be a traffic accident and people are all getting out of their cars.
Arianna Valenti (Watchung Hills)
This photo was taken most likely in a city because the people are wearing work clothes. The signs show this was in a spanish speaking country and there must of been an evacuation of some sort because the signs are for the floor levels of a building.
Aditya Loganathan - WHRHS (WHRHS)
In this picture I see hundreds of people standing outside on the street. I feel that there is a protest going on to oppose a law. I feel this because it looks like the people are holding signs and aren’t there on accident rather purposefully.
Brendan (Whrhs)
There is a lot of people walking on the roads in a bug city with cars and buses. It looks like their is security and signs for different things that may be a result of some protest or something.
Sean A. (whrhs)
A number of people seem to be gathering on the road with similiar badges and signs that say "Piso". Most seem to have work clothes on.
Patrick C. (WHRHS)
Based on the amount of people in the middle of the street and the uncommon sight of that many people in the street I would think this is something out of the usual. Using the insight of other commenters I would think that this could be an earthquake drill somewhere in a densely populated area. Possibly Mexico in light of the recent earthquakes there.
Alisa (WHRHS)
This picture was taken in a big city. The people look dressed up and as if they are all headed somewhere. It is very crowded
Gabriela S. (WHRHS)
It looks like the people in the picture are used to this clutter. There are a ton of people and cars together which is kind of strange because I have never seen anything like this before. In the city it isn't even this crowded. It looks like everyone is dressed up so maybe a building got evacuated and everyone needed to get out.
Sedef R (WHRHS)
People are fighting against the political system in Mexico. Many people are dressed up and upset and they are on the roads.
Juhee (nj WH)
It looks like people are protesting for something and their are reporters there since there are people dressed up in suits with badges.
Hailey c (Whrhs)
This might be for a convention or organized gathering, all of these people are in work attire holding signs. Maybe it was an organized evacuation of an office building in a city in a Spanish speaking country.
Dan (Warren)
This photo looks like it's from a Spanish speaking city that's heavily populated. A work building looks as if it was evacuated. This could be from Spain from a political independence augurement and they are having a friendly protest.
Thomas W (Whrhs)
Looks like the photo was taken in a big city, that is extremely crowded. Many are dressed in formal outfits and ties. All the signs say piso which means floor... could be something to do with an earthquake in mexico.
John S (Warren)
I think it’s a earthquake drill as no one seems to be in to much distress, there are cars parked in the middle and the people have things around there neck to show it’s a drill
Maia B (Warren, NJ)
This photo was taken on the busy streets in a big city. You can tell it was taken in a city because most of the people are dressed professionally, probably in work clothes. The cars don't seem to be moving due to the chaos going on too.
Ryan W (WHRHS)
This could be people evacuating in Mexico as an earthquake drill so that they all know how to proceed with protocol in the case of a natural disaster
Juan Cristobal (Guadalajara)
At first, I thought this was an earthquake case. But, then I saw that a vast majority are waring some kind of pass badge around their necks. This meant that whatever is happening here was organized and meant to happen. What then caught my eye, was that there are cars parked in the middle of the whole crowd. I thought maybe they could be parked, but this wasn't the case because there is a traffic light right there in the middle and the cars are not arranged in a specific order. All of this brought me to the conclusion that this was an earthquake drill.
Robyn (ny)
wow what good explaining
Ale M (Mexico)
This picture looks like a drill because there are people in the middle of all the citizens holding some posters with numbers. These posters might make order in all the pope and if you look at their faces they don't look worried but some of them look desperate maybe because of all the people they are with.
Emilio Cano (Nuevo Toledo en Puebla)
This picture seems to me to be showing a manifestation, since many people mid-street is not something normal. I think their purpose is to protest against some reforms or laws, due to the signs people are holding. Something that I notice to be strange in the picture are all of the cars just sitting there stuck among the people, mid-protest.
Luis (Mexico)
There is a movement of the company Nacional Monte de Piedad, and I think they are wanting to make the peso go higher. A lot of people are united wanting to make Mexico a better economy.
Jeremias Cañedo (Nuevo Toledo en Puebla)
In the picture,I think they are protesting against their rights or salary or even that this company is doing something bad. I also think that where ever this is they are overpopulated because they look cramped and overcrowded.
Andres Rodriguez (Nuevo Toledo en Puebla)
I think that an earthquake drill is happening in Mexico because there are a lot of people crowded outside and there are people with signs that say "piso" which means floor, so I think that there is an earthquake drill of a building hours before the real earthquake in México City.
Emily (Mexico)
This picture shows people having an event because on the signs it has a logo which is Nacional Monte de Piedad. It is a pawnshop in Mexico. I think they are having an event because of all the people there in suits.
Maritza (Guadalajara, Jalisco)
This looks like a protest since most people are dressed in white and have posters. They are blocking the street and they are all heading to the same place.
Rafael (J)
In this picture it seems like people in some spanish talking country are protesting for whatever reason they have. I can say that because people have posters with spanish words and a huge crowd walking in the streets through the cars.
Devesh S (Redmond)
Many people are holding up signs called Piso (Spanish for floor). This lets us know that this activity has happened in a predominantly Spanish speaking country. Additionally, the Reforma 355 under the signs shows the building name or the street name. The only reason that these many people were removed from the building was that there is some kind of event that occurred which forced these people to evacuate. If there was a non - natural attack (fire, active shooter in the building) these people would not stay near the area and would disperse. Therefore there we know that there is a natural attack. So what predominantly Spanish speaking country had a natural attack recently? The answer is Mexico. Mexico recently had magnitude 7.1 earthquake which has killed up to 400 people. The emotion of these people accurately reflect my reaction to this news.
Aidan "seacoon" Trexler (outer space)
This picture shows a huge uprising in a political outrage against a certain company or corrupted government. If you look closely at the several signs their holding that say "reforme" which probably means reform. But their plans are stopped midway through when they then get interrupted by an earthquake, which is why there is, even more, people heading one single direction away with other signs that say "piso" which means floor, or the earth floor is shaking.
Elise R (Pennsylvania)
In the picture, I think that there is a drill of some sort because I translated the "piso" and that means floor. Also, there might have been a "meeting" because most everyone has a pass necklace on. I also think that where ever this is they are overpopulated because they look cramped and overcrowded.
Ana Paula (Guadalajara, Mexico)
I believe that people are having an earthquake drill, since people don't seem panicked or shocked because if it was an earthquake people would be panicked, and screaming. Also, people seem to be organized with posters that say floor and a number in spanish. I believe they are patiently waiting for the drill to be over, sine some of them are even smiling. I believe this picture was taken in Mexico City early on September 19 of 2017 before the earthquake hit Mexico. This is a drill since every year all over Mexico, on September 19 everybody does a practice drill to commemorate the earthquake that hit Mexico City in 1985 the same date the earthquake happened this year.
Van M (Kirkland, WA)
This picture seems to be a large crowd of people, many of them professionals or workers, filling up a street in a Hispanic country, likely Spain. What makes me say that is the people holding the signs seem to be indicating a location to submit something or to lead people somewhere, and in Spain this weekend there was a vote on Catalan independence, which would explain all the people in the street. Therefore, the people holding the signs could be indicating locations to vote, and the reason the streets are clogged could be chalked up to the mass voter suppression the Madrid government attempted.
Betty (Mexico)
I think this looks like a drill maybe from an earthquake. I assume this because they are holding up signs. The cars are just their with the people like if it was not planned.
Noor (Guadalajara )
This image strikes me as a manifestation where people are both marching and driving for a cause they feel strongly about, such as a strike against wages or the government. There are several people wearing the same uniform which could mean they are in charge of the protest. It is also clear that most people are of tan skin, inclining the setting could be centered around Latin America, Middle Eastern Regions or South Asia.
Charlotte Walker (Mexico)
In this photo it appears as if it is a normal day in what appears South America. but if you look closer, there are some signs which could mean something else. It could be a protest or a political rally. I also noticed that there are cars and buses in the road stopped.
Hana (Mexico)
This picture shows a drill for an earthquake/fire or other situation. I think this is so because I see signs that say "piso" which translates to floor in Spanish. These signs seem to be organizing the people in by floor in which they were located in which shows how this could show a drill. Also, there doesn't seem to be much panic in the faces of the people which shows signs that a real disaster didn't take place. I would say this picture takes place in an overpopulated South American country because of the language on the signs and the traffic because of the number of people on the streets. Additionally, the people seem to be coming from a common setting judging by their attire; office wear, basic colors.
Ian S (Redmond)
This image appears to show the evacuation of buildings in Mexico after the recent earthquake. First, the signs being held by the people in the lower right corner are most likely there to help organize the evacuation, sorting people from different floors of an office building. The sign says "piso", which means "floor" in Spanish, indicating floors of a building. Furthermore, the people gathered around the signs are dressed in business attire, suggesting that they work in an office building. This event also portrays some urgency, because people are in the street with cars. Whenever there are planned protests or other events, the streets are closed to cars beforehand. However, this does not appear to be a protest, because most of the people are not holding signs, not shouting, and look anxious, rather than the determined or angry look of protesters. This picture is also clearly taken in Mexico. This is because the logo on the signs matches that of Nacional Monte de Piedad, a large charitable organization and pawnshop that is only located in Mexico.
Rishika V (Sammamish)
The scene in this picture is set in a Spanish speaking country as evidenced by the signs people are holding up in Spanish. We can see a traffic light in the middle of the picture and several cars and buses littered throughout the picture so we can also infer that this is a street. There are a lot of people standing on the street which isn’t a common occurrence so one possible explanation could be that these people are fleeing or evacuating from something however I think it’s more likely they are protesting. I’m leaning more towards to protesting because while the street is packed the nearby sidewalk in the upper left corner is pretty much empty. If the people were evacuating they would have definitely used the sidewalk as well, but for a protest blocking a road off would garner more attention so it would make most sense that people aren’t using the sidewalk because this is a protest. I’m also led to believe this is a protest because when you look at some of the signs people in the lower left area of the picture are holding you can see that at the bottom the word ‘reforma’ is written. Reforma is Spanish for reform, so this leads me to believe that the people are pushing for a reform of some sort and so they’re protesting to let it be known they want change. So in conclusion, I think this is a protest occurring on a street in a Spanish speaking country.
Cameren Roberts (Shaker High School)
This is some kind of major event that has resulted in thousands of people flooding the streets, due to either calls for political reform in an area such as Catalonia. This is a Spanish speaking country has "piso" is Spanish for floor, leading to me to believe this is indeed Spain.
Mathias F (WA)
In the crowded intersection in Mexico, people storm out of office buildings and gather with fellow coworkers to count numbers after the recent earthquake. I figure that it takes place in Mexico because of the hair color and the darker skin tone, as well as the Spanish on the various signs being held up. There are a couple key observations that led me to believe that it is an evacuation and NOT a protest. First of all, lots of the people are in formal attire, suggesting they rushed out of an office building. Second of all, the signs say "Piso" followed by a number and letter, which translates to floor in English. I think that people are gathering in groups and taking a headcount based on which floor they work. It is almost exactly like the emergency drills that we do in school. In addition, on the right hand side of the photo there are multiple people wearing red and white emergency type vests, some holding megaphones. Although there is no apparent damage, I think it is the recent Mexico City Earthquake.
Yusei O. (Redmond, Washington)
This seems to be a peaceful riot by blocking this intersection somewhere in South America. The Latino population seems to be protesting tax laws of some sort. Most of these protesters seem to be dressed semi-formally with a long sleeve white shirt and a black tie, including some with lanyards. There a few within the crowd holding up signs with specific numbers on them to probably signifies the floor/department that are responsible for a certain tax. Using some of my Español, I knew that “Piso” meant floor. What I first thought was that their protesting a tiling company but clearly no one would amass so many people for something like this so I assumed it had to do with a department of some sort. I zoomed in a little closer and I found the word “Reforma” which means reform. From there I was certain that it had to do with the government. Some prior knowledge also connected it had to do with government. I had read previously somewhere that a protest occurred somewhere in a Spanish speaking country. In the background, I noticed that the sidewalk on the left side of the photo is completely empty, clearly showing that the roads were meant to be crowded instead of a just a massive crosswalk. If you look towards the back, there are less people, also another a hint that the protesters are intentionally blocking traffic.
Sophia W (Redmond, WA)
In this picture, there's a lot of people in the street. There are so many people that the whole street is covered, and cars can barely be seen in the mass. I believe that people are protesting for some sort of rights because many of the people in the picture are holding up signs that have numbers and say "reform". The fact that they are blocking the street means that they are trying to get attention to the officials of the area. Many of the people in the front of the picture are wearing lanyards and business attire ( neck ties, collar shirts and black pants), so they might be protesting against workers rights to get a higher raise.
Vedantha V (Redmond WA)
This image taken in South America, as evidenced by the signs, portrays a number of people on the road. The fact that there are many people in matching formal attire near the front suggests that this may have been planned out. The sheer number of people blocking the road suggests that this is abnormal, for if it was an everyday thing cars would know not to take this route. The signs, which translate to Floor in english hint that this may be due to an earthquake, specifically the gathering of a group of people to watch an apartment fall. There recently was an Earthquake in Mexico, and this image may portray the aftermath of the quake. The main issue with this is the fact that there are still cars on the road, and there seem to be poles which are still standing up.
Elisa Unoki (Washington)
There is an overflow of people in the middle of the streets belonging to a Spanish-speaking country because they are protesting against something about "piso" which means floor in Spanish. In the streets are many people wearing business attire such as a white collared shirt and a black tie. Among these people in the right side of the streets there can be signs being held up, so they are protesting in the middle of a busy time to be seen by as many people as possible. Towards the top left portion in the background a white canopy/tent is surrounded by people who i believe are either selling food or having people sign a petition for the protest occurring around them.
Irene Y (Redmond)
A large congestion of people, cars, buses, and tents spans the entirety of the picture, with no road nor sky seen. The mass is holding signs, many of the people are formally dressed, but others are in every day clothes. Many of the signs say “Piso” and a number-letter combination after it, with “Reforma 355” written at the bottom. The crowd looks to be predominantly Latino. Officers of some sort, in bright uniforms are seen amidst the group, one with a megaphone. I think that this may be a demonstration after the earthquakes in Mexico, to change building code, most likely. This is evidenced by the Latino makeup of the crowd, the signs that shout for a reform and portray a building, as well as the pure number of people: there are so many of them on the streets. These people want to change building requirements, so that less people get hurt the next time a huge disaster comes.
Stephen (Washington)
Due to the majority of the people having dark skin and non-African features, I think the picture is in India. All the people and Cars are facing the same way, as well as a cluster of official looking people in the bottom of the picture. These make me think it is a rally since there are no signs making me think this is a protest. Furthermore, the cars all going the same way as well as the top left being very empty signal to me that this is not a normal day.
Shaurya V (Redmond, Washington)
I believe that this picture represents an extremely populated part of the world, and judging by the skin tone of the people that are visible in the photo, these people seem like they are Indians. Based on personal experience, I can say with conviction that there are massive crowds in India near train stations, as that is the transportation for many people to get to work everyday. Many people are gathering in one central area, which could mean that they are waiting for the train to arrive.
Mintra F (Sammamish)
I believe these people are evacuating Puerto Rico due to Hurricane Maria. I believe this because of the multiple people wearing safety vests with megaphones, and some of the official looking people who may work for the puerto rican government. The masses of people and cars who seems to be going in similar directions, and the signs in Spanish, support my idea.
Alex Pujol (Washington)
To analyze the picture I've decided on breaking it down and writing out each thought that occurred to me as I looked over it. To begin with, I think of a large mass of people and I think either the photo depicts a festival or joyous celebration of something OR a protest/walkout/general social & economic problem. The obvious thing to check for when deciding between a happy and serious occasion is the facial expressions, all of which are stern and gloomy. Not a single smile lit up the crowd and so I am led to believe the gathering is caused by a problem. Upon searching for further details I noticed that many people off to the right of the photo were holding up signs that said things like "Piso 5-a", and beneath the text would say "Reforma 355". Piso is the spanish word for floor and reforma is a cognate so it means reform. These pieces line up and lead me to believe that either an apartment building is being protested for some specific reason and the people want its system to be reformed or that the construction of an apartment is causing an issue and people are protesting it in the streets. I saw on one woman's coat in the bottom right of the photo, her shirt has a patch on the arm with a flag that is not completely visible, but though approximation I am assuming that this protest is taking place in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, or El Salvador.
Brennan (SMS)
What good explaining
Ilna Achi (USA)
The signs that the people are holding are in Spanish, leading me to believe that this scene may be somewhere in South America. Traffic is interspersed throughout the crowd in a disorderly fashion, and in combination with the people's signs it looks like this is not an everyday event- perhaps some sort of protest. The line of similarly-dressed people in the front make it seem like different organizations are also included in this 'protest'.
Aryo Karai (Washington)
Within this image, a vast array of individuals is occupying a street. In their midst, three lines of automobiles commence in straight paths in the right of the background and swerve leftwards near the foreground. A green street light reposes above the scene, suggesting this could be an intersection. On the far left of the middle ground, the masses meet an ebony-tinted bus. Furthermore, several in the crowd bear signs with Spanish words such as Piso and Reforma. Also, beside these entities lie individuals wearing white suits; they are the epitome of formal attire. Upon contemplation of the evidence, it seems that this scene is occurring after some emergency and the gathering is a vague attempt at evacuation. Of course, it may appear as though the signs indicate that this is a protesting event. However, the expressions of the crowd reflect confusion rather than the directed vigor of an organization. Moreover, due to their reasoning expressions, the aforementioned suited individuals are likely medical professionals attempting to alleviate the situation. Due to the appearance of those pictured and the signs' language, it is discernible that the location is in Latin America. In addition, it should be noted that Latin American regions have been adversely affected in recent times. Hurricane Irma and Maria battered the islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico respectively, causing more damage than since decades past. All in all, this image likely typifies the pandemonium of such tragedy.
Milena Z. (Kirkland, WA)
This picture has a lot of details and more you look at it, more pieces to the puzzle we have. The first thing that we can see on the photograph is a huge crowd of people. If we will look closer, we can see that everyone is wearing a white shirt; some people, as well are wearing a lanyard and/or a tie. Also, we can see a large number of cars and buses in the crowd. Furthermore, some of these individuals are holding signs/poster with numbers/words of them. The words seem to be in Spanish. Everyone is looking in the same direction, towards the camera. People with the signs seem like they are trying to find someone. Also, this is happening at a big intersection, because of the traffic light in the middle of the picture. The foreground is blurry, but we can see people and the crowd. In the left upper corner, we can see a white tent and people with white chef hats. The cars in the front row are perpendicular to the traffic. According to all the details that we have gathered and all the observations we have made, it is still hard to make a solid decision on this picture. It has a lot to look at, but all these details do not tell a lot. I assume that this is a protest against government.
Brandon Wui (STEM)
It looks like the entire city is evacuating a disaster/event of some sort. There are many people visible, and most of them are wearing white clothing. We also see some people holding up signs, and that suggests that people are evacuating in a unique fashion of some sort.
Anna W (Kirkland)
In this picture, an evacuation or drill is taking place in a Spanish speaking country. I make this statement because of the signs held up mainly in the lower right hand of the picture that say piso and then a number. This leads me to believe that the people gathered might be from an office building, supported by the fact that not only does piso mean building floor in Spanish, but also a large majority of the people gathered in the lower left side of the picture are in nice looking clothes, possibly office wear. Relating to the possible drill, the reason I believe that this might have been a planned gathering is the fact that there are people who appear to be direction the large groups of people scattered through the crowd wearing safety vests. To support my point about this being planned, there appears to be a tent set up in the back left of the picture, suggesting forethought. One additional connection I can make is that the building might be where the picture was taken from, as when you look at the picture, you can see more faces than backs of head, so they might be all looking at one common thing.
Varshan Muhunthan (Redmond)
I think that there is a protest going on in the picture. I think that because there are many people all gathered holding signs, and their expressions don't look happy too, more angry like what you would usually see on faces during a protest. They all appear to be facing the same direction too, like they are all looking at something or someone. One thing else that I noticed is that the signs have a picture of a building on them, and the writing on the signs are in Spanish.
shdu (WA state)
I think that the people must evacuate from several buildings and there might be an earthquake or a massive fire across those buildings. The people only have space in the middle of the road. The signs say "piso" which means floor in Spanish. They could be signs for people from certain floors of buildings to follow. If you zoom in on the lower right corner, you could see some people in red jackets with a silver stripe. Those look like people who keep the others safe. Also, most people are unhappy. I do not think this is a protest event because there are no major signs that include the subject of the protest.
Michelle R. (Minnesota)
The people in the picture are dressed in suits and ties and also badges. The signs read "piso" which means floor. But if you zoom in, you can also read "reforma" which means reform. Reform is a term that is often used in political situations and guessing by the language used in the signs (Spanish), maybe Mexico? It's most likely not an evacuation since there are no ambulances or firemen, etc. It would make sense if there was a big political event happening though, since this looks like it's taking place in El Paseo De La Reforma.
Tenzin L (Washington)
In a crowded area in the South America, suggested by the presence of Spanish on the signs, a large swarm of people has taken to the streets during rush hour. Many people in the crowd are wearing business attire, suggesting they are either headed to or just leaving their jobs. The ocean of people extends to the horizon of the photo, meaning this is a period where most people are out. Some people, trying to take advantage of the situation, are advertising things on signs as the crowd rushes by. The remaining individuals are all headed to their daily destinations.
Inbar (O)
I think that this photo captures hundreds of people coming in need of relief efforts after the earthquake in Mexico. There are people with signs written in Spanish, suggesting this takes place in a Spanish speaking country. Also there are people in the crowd wearing uniforms and lanyards as well as canopies which prelude to a big event but since the people in the crowd appear very solemn and the whole chaos of the situation, leads me to believe something bad has occurred.
miguel dionne (PA)
I think that there is something wrong with a structure or there is a new structure opening because there are people that have suits that are holding signs. and some people have necklaces that seem to be ID.
Mychal M (Sammamish, WA)
The image seems to depict an evacuation or drill of an office or apartment building. I concluded this due to the fact that "Piso" means "Floor" in English and the signs could be used to gather office workers/tenants of a floor. Also, mostly everyone in the picture, especially those gathered around the signs, are wearing formal attire. This leads me to lean slightly towards the fact that it happened near an office. Also, there's an immense amount of people on the street for a protest or gathering (notice the cars in standstill, the street would have been closed by now) so I might hazard a guess towards a fire or earthquake happened. Looking back on recent events, I can see many potential connections. For instance this could be a protest for Catalonian independence, or an evacuation due to the earthquakes that happened in Mexico.
Rob M. (Redmond, Wa)
I think there is a protest going on in an intersection. The protest interpretation comes from the fact that there are about 9 people holding signs up and the intersection interpretation comes from the fact that there are several cars and buses are surrounded by people and there is a traffic light roughly in the middle of the picture. Some of the cars seem to have been going horizontally and two seem to be going to our left. There are also some tents in the background, but I do not really know what to make of them.
Alvin L (Redmond, WA)
I believe that there is some sort of protest or an event taking place in this crowded street. There are a lot of people in this picture and a majority of them are standing on a street, we can tell that this is a street because we can see cars protruding from the crowd and traffic lights. The reason that I think this is some major protest or event is the shear number of people that are gathered together, some people in the foreground are wearing the same formal attire with some sort of pass hanging from their necks, there are some signs being held up that have the word "Piso" followed by a single number and a letter. Ex; The road from the right of the viewers pov is going away while the road on the left is heading towards the camera, there is a road parallel to the bottom of the photo all of these road positions are shown by the orientation of the cars, the picture is taken from an elevated pov, there is a metal pillar in the middle of the picture which has traffic lights on it this pillar might be supporting something that is out of the picture frame, seems to be no one on the sidewalk which is located at the top left portion of the photo.
Ilayda Arin (NY)
In this picture, I see so many people in the streets next to cars in the traffic. It looks like people are protesting over something crucial to step into the traffic. The scenery takes place somewhere in Spain since the white papers say something in Spanish. Some people seem overjoyed, happy, frowned or stressful. Also, in the traffic there are several traffic polices trying to clear the streets to stop any problems to occur.
Jason H. (California)
I believe the people were are rushing to go home but the they are stuck they have to wait until fix it. You can see thousand of people are waiting and they can't move. And I see the sign says "Piso" and #1 I don't know what is #1 but I know Piso is a Spanish Language means floor I don't know why there sign that all I can find.
sweet chili doritos (Carnsise Brooklyn)
I personally think that this is in a big city were there might be an event like a convention. One reason why i think that is because how the people are dressed they seemed to be dressed in formal wear or buisness causal, they all have name tags which probably represent that they are doing something that requires that. There is also crossing guards that controls traffic and when you usally see that mean its something that has to do with something that involes transportation which a lot people could be going to like a convention.
Dania (New Jersey)
I believe that the setting of this picture takes place somewhere in the Middle East because for one, I can tell that this place is foreign due to the buses not looking American. And two, the people look Asian. I also believe that there is some sort of celebration going on since there are many people and they're smiling.
Sha (Flordia)
I believe that this is in a wildly asian populated country, maybe some peaceful place in the middle east. It is crowded which leads me to believe it is some sort of event like a convention.
Nobody Owens (California)
I think that it is rush hour in a middle east country. The vehicles have an old fashion design. The vehicles have that movie typical ad underdeveloped look. I also noticed that there are different traffic signs. I am assuming that they are traffic signs because thay are near the traffic lights. They are in an unfamiliar format than what are seen in the U.S.
Ana H (Mexico )
I think this was a protest as there are many people holding up signs which could have a meaning behind them
Gabe (Ladysmith B.C)
I believe this is a office strike because piso means floor in Spanish and a lot of the people are in suites and ties also there are quite a few signs another reason to believe this is a strike is because of all the abandoned cars and buses this is most definitely in a Spanish speaking country
Andres (Guadalajara)
People are protesting because a lot of them are holding up signs like they are mad about something.
Nour Akil (Shaker High school)
After studying this picture I've noticed that this is a Spanish speaking area, there are business people, holding up signs that seem to want to attract people to come with them. There are cars are being blocked off by people as well. Also there are people in vests holding a bullhorn to maybe get people in order.
Manuel (Mexico City)
In this picture I think people are evacuating the buildings from Mexico city do to the earthquake because you can see a men with yellow jackets and holding a poster number to identify the people.
Zuocong Li (New York)
In this picture, there looks like tons of people are squeezing on the street with nearly no space between one another. Most of them are white and wearing suits and shirts, and they look not very happy. Some of them are holding boards saying Piso, which means Floor in Spanish. There are cars on the street too but they are surrounded by people and cannot move any forward. Cars look empty and it looks like they are not parked properly but just randomly on the street and drivers just flooded into to the crowd. It looks like people are probably evacuated from some kind of attack or natural disasters, or some building fire alarms, that people all run out of building and crowded together. There are also signs held by people saying “floor”, and with certain numbers on it, which probably means people are evacuated to certain area, but it is very hard to keep in order because it is too crowded in here.
Robert Kleiman (Guadalajara, Mexico)
The picture shows a prodigious amount of people on the streets of Mexico City. They seem to be dressed as if they just came out of work and are holding signs that say what floor they belong to. The signs could be an identifier of what building they used to belong to before the earthquake.
Mallory (Ladysmith BC)
I believe that there's a protest going on in mexico. I believe that because I recently heard on the news that there's like a feud going on between the teachers and cops? I don't really know a lot but i just recognized it.
Fernando Su (Guadalajara)
In the picture you can see that people are waiting to get into some place. In the background there are tents which could be giving out information sheets or it could be where they register. Then you can see many signs stating out the floor level and the room number. People have collars with what would be their entry passes.
Ella W. (Ladysmith B.C. Canada)
I think that in this picture, there are civilians of a Spanish speaking country, protesting against something. I think this because they are holding up signs with Spanish words on them and the people look to be blocking a street but I'm not sure why.
Sami C (Souderton)
1. I think that t is rush hour like people are trying to get home or going to work 2. Cuz there is a lot of people walking somewhere and they seem dressed up. Like some guys have ties on. 3.This is most likely a developing country because there is only like 15ish cars. Also, people have signs so maybe some type of riot.
Riccardo Franco (Hudson, Ohio)
This is a very used subway in a populated city in a Spanish speaking country. I think of this because there is a subway train at the left. I also think that it is a Spanish speaking country because there are signs that say " piso" which means floor in Spanish. There also a ton of people, maybe trying to get on the tram. You could think this is a protest or an evacuation. This could not be a protest since there are no handwritten signs or any signs that protest anything. It also couldn't be an evacuation because everyone is dressed fairly well and nobody looks worried. That's why I think this is a subway station in a Spanish speaking country.
Cassie Davis (somewhere)
i think that its the shooting from Los Vegas
Cameren Roberts (Shaker High School)
Though your thoughts on this being from the horrible events that occurred in Las Vegas is a valid guess on what this picture is about, this indeed is not the shooting as this article was posted earlier in the morning hours before the event happened. If you look at the signs, all of them are in Spanish making this photo most likely not from the United States.
Parbeen S (Redmond)
i believe that this is either a protest or an evacuation of some sort in a Spanish speaking language because there is a mass population on the roads inside of the side walks and there are people holding up signs thus i believe that this is a protest. Although on some of the posters it says piso which means floor in Spanish which reminded me of the earthquake in Mexico.
Ms. Jones (Los Angeles, CA)
My sixth grade class has three possibilities: 1.) It's a regular work day and people are rushing either to work or to home. They think this because people are dressed similarly. 2.) It's a protest, and we think this because of the groups in between the cars and the signs. 3.) Some of us think that there is a celebrity or someone that a lot people want to see because sometimes people are in huge crowds to see celebrities or famous people.
Ryan Suydam (HMS)
There is a convention going on, that's why the street is completely flooded with people. There are people with identification with them. They need identification so they know who is at the convention. Some people may think that the streets are just crowded from people walking around, but people wouldn't be wearing ties and nice clothing if they were just walking around, they also wouldn't be walking around with identification around their necks. In conclusion, a convention is going on, that's why the streets are flooded with people.
Gabriel (Ladysmith B.C Canada)
This is in a Spanish speaking country and definitely a protest against what i don't know but you can see it's a protest because of the sign and because they are on the road blocking traffic and if the people where not there the cars would be able to go because the light is green.
Clara Keefer (Ladysmith BC)
In this picture i think that people might be evacuating because of an earthquake. Most people seem to be in a rush and have a worried look on their faces. I think the people with reflective jackets are police men directing people to evacuation zones.
Melanie (Mexico)
I think this is a protest. Cars are being blocked and I see many people in the streets.
Paula (M)
There is a huge amount of people walking in the street with what it seems like posters projecting messages. I think they are gathering for some governmental talk or citizen protest.
Nina G (Seattle,WA)
After analyzing the picture, I noticed that there is a lot of people in the streets blocking oncoming cars. In the bottom, right corner there seems to be a lot of signs in Spanish saying. “building” and a number typically followed by a letter. I think these posters are for other people to know which building has collapsed, and where they are from. Also, there are some people with megaphones maybe to get others attention or find their friends and loved ones. Based off what I have observed I think that this is an image of Mexico City after the 7.1 earthquake that had massive destruction. There seems to be some tents set up in the back potentially used for living or even first aid. In the very front of the image are cars set up and people in formal attire, I am assuming there are to help the people who has their homes wrecked after the earthquake. There seems to be more people dressed in white throughout the image, some in the very front but others clustered together in a variety of areas. Oddly enough there seems to be little people on the sidewalks, probably because it’s too dangerous to be close to the collapsing buildings.
kaprece venny chrris (whasgton)
we think that a building fell or they are running from some thing
Angel Sanchez (Guadalajara, Mexico)
This is the earthquake drill that is celebrated every year in Mexico City, commemorating the 1985 earthquake. This is evident, because of the order that is being kept with the signs for each floor in which people work in. These signs also provide further evidence about the organized nature of these people, as they have a company logo (Nacional Monte de Piedad). It can be seen that it is not the 'actual' earthquake, as they look bored, not worried.
Marcelo DLT (Guadalajara)
This might be a convention because everyone is using formal clothes and almost everyone are adults. Also, there are some people with posters that have numbers which might indicate a group of people who are going to a convention. This might be in Mexico City because of a number of people, the traffic, and because there's a poster where you can see Spanish words.
javaughn and hailey (washington)
We think that it is going to be a football game or some kind of sport going on. Or a very busy farmers market.
Braelyn and keggan (washington)
We think that this is a street in japan because the people in this picture look chinese and also japan has the buisiest streets in the world and this street is pretty busy
Mathew and Lindsey (Washington)
We think that the people are protesting for help after a disater.
lucy and seriah (uniball) (washington)
we think that there is a protest in india because there is the fbi and pedestrians and on the streets holding signs blocking traffic.
Aaron and Tony (Washington)
We think that there are a lot of people and that they want more towers and making a riot against trump's new laws.
Monica Gutierrez (Guadalajara, Mexico)
I think that in the picture an earthquake just happened so the people evacuated a building, since you can see a hurt person being held up by two men, so probably something fell on her because of the quake and you can also see people being separated by sections since there are signs with different floors on them. I think it is in Mexico because the signs in the picture are in spanish and there was a recent earthquake. I also see that the stop light is green but the people are on the street so no one is driving.
Joseph and Kimberlyn (Washintion)
It looks like a group of people trying to cross at a stop light It also looks like that they are going away from something
jenny and kaylina (washingtion)
we think that they all are trying to cross at a stop light but its hard to cross because theres a lot of people and the all surrounding cars.
Natalie , Olivia, Lenneah, Devon. (washinton)
We think that there is a protest. We think that because people are holding signs.
Maia (Kirkland, WA)
I think this is in a Spanish speaking country, as there are signs that have Spanish on them. I also think this is a protest, because the people seem to be holding signs and they are blocking traffic; if the people were not there the cars would be able to go, especially since the traffic light is green. The protest is also taking place specifically on the road, because there are open spaces in the left corner. There are some people from the media covering this story at the front, because of their badges around their necks and their business like attire.
Johnna (Shaker High School)
I'd like to respectfully disagree with your opinion although I really like your thought process about the traffic lights and people blocking the road and possible news reporters. If you look closely to the cars in the road, it appears like nobody is in any of the cars. This leads me to believe something else is going on like a mass evacuation of some place. The peoples faces also don't look angry like they're protesting either. They almost all look confused as if they don't know what is going on.
Liam D (PA)
I think this is an evacuation in Mexico (or a Spanish-speaking country) from the earthquake since the signs in the crowd say "Piso," which means floor in Spanish.
Jacey Maree (Warren,NJ)
It’s in Spain and it looks like a protest is going on. It also looks like people are mad and angry and extremely over crowded. People aren’t trying to become independent. And the request is being denied by the Spanish government.
Lexi White (Seattle WA)
I see a lot of people standing around some have their phones out, It could be a protest/strike for some type of business. All the people in the picture have different looks on their face so the incident isn't affecting all of them the same exact way. I see that most of these people are from the same building because they all have the same little sign that says "Piso" then a number.
Nick (North Dakota)
I believe this is just an everyday occurrence in an indian city because of how casual everyone looks in this picture
Janet (Seattle, Wa)
some sort of protest could be going on. there are certain people in white with a tag and then there is everyone else around, still dressed nicely.
mahlee s (north dakota)
I think that the people in this picture are playing a real life game of Where is Waldo. Just look at this it is exactly like where’s waldo. They are all looking around and who else to look for other then waldo.
Araya (ND)
There is a protest going on depending on how many people are in the streets, but with the looks on their faces there could me a disaster And they are fleeting the scene
Parker E (?)
Many people are in a very crowed street filled with cars. There are tents and vendors around in the picture also.
caitlyn m (north dakota)
I think that there’s a big strike or something that people are really involved in because no cars can get through all of the people. People wanting something to change because there’s a lot of people that want something to change.
Sam j (ND)
I believe there is a protest happening over what had happened in Vegas.
Hunter D. (North Dakota)
It seems to be a protest is going on. They are protesting through a busy street. It looks peaceful but sens there are police there I don't how it will end out
Kayla (North Dakota)
a protest is going on and that's why the street is so cramped. Or it could be an accident that happened and then one person got mad and then another person got mad and pretty soon everyone's angry and out of their cars screaming at each other.
Brooke P. (ND)
In this picture i see a very very busy street and everyone is going to work. the street has a very big business on it and everyone going to work. some of the people are wearing the same thing and look very professional. the cars are trying to get through but it isn't very clogged because of all the people around.
Kanani (Hawaii)
I think that workers in Mexico had to get out of there buildings because obviously thwy don’t want to be there, and no traffic is moving. So either they had to get out because of an appocolpsy or they were getting out for a fire or earthquake. Most likely he later onebecause no one has any possessions
Kelsey (Neverland)
Maybe there is a traffic jam because of a serious event such as when the twin towers fell.
Otter (Berlin, Germany)
This is in Spain. People are going to protest in Catalonia. They look like they are workers and they are all going to the same place.
Phyenixx (Pergatory)
I think a protest or a special event is going on in either Asia or Europe. If I'm wrong than it wouldn't surprise me if it is Mexico after the earthquake. I'll admit that I would have never seen or commented on this if it wasn't apart of my language arts class. It's not that I don't care it's just that I hate most social media.
Maria (Guadalajara)
I believe that in this picture the earthquake in Mexico happened. People look shocked and shook and they are all staring at the same place. It seems like Mexico city since the busses are pretty similar to Mexico city ones.
Fausto Palma (Mexico)
People are evacuating Mexico City after the earthquake. I say this since there usually aren't a lot of people in the streets and there are signs in Spanish. I also think this because the traffic light looks like the ones there are in Mexico city.
David Ortiz (Mexico)
People are evacuating Mexico City after the earthquake. I say this because people are all surrounding and overflowing the streets. I know it is in Mexico because there are signs in Spanish in the crowd.
Riley Heryford (mexico)
I think there is A sort of street fair happening. I see people walking around and stands/tents set up in the background. There are some people trying to drive though the crowd of pedestrians.
Maria Paredes (Souderton HS)
I think there is a protest going on and it must be important because it is so large the cars can barely pass through. There are some people holding out signs and it is very crowded.
Natalie Gutierrez (minot north dakota)
I believe that there is a major business convention going on and they just got released for a lunch break.

I would guess that this is in Venezuela during a protest to change the government in order to get food or better tax rates.
Derek M WHRHS (nj)
Looks like some kind of protest or organized event because of all the lanyards around the neck
Megan Camp (Watchung, Nj)
I see a mob people walking in the sreeets, and I don’t know if it means anything but they are all wearing white and holding up protest signs. They are blocking the cars and streets.
Rachel M. (WHRHS)
It looks like a protest is going on, the street is extremely crowded the cars can't move. It looks like it is somewhere in Spain.
Wes Kuehne (WHRHS)
I believe that there is a big event going on like a protest. People have overrun the streets and the cars can’t even move because there are so many people. I think it is happening in Spain since they are having protests.
Jonathan (Warren NJ)
I believe this is in Catalonia Spain where there are currently riots being taken place because the people want to be independent from the country.
Icelandic Pony (France)
In this picture it seems that there are people trying to get away from some place, possibly their home, in search of better living.
Griffith H (WHRHS)
I think that this is taking place in Catalonia Spain as they voted to pretty much secede from Spain but the government failed to recognize the vote.
Kim (Whrhs)
It looks like there is an event or festival happening in a Spanish speaking country. There are signs that reads piso-#A and numbers on poles. There are people wearing landysrds and in a white collared shirt. There are cars and busses trying to get through the large crowd. There is a huge street light in the middle of the picture "conducting" traffic
Mackenzie WHRHS (NJ)
A town or something protesting maybe the province in Spain trying to become its own country.

This is a protest most likely in Spain with catalonia

Workers in Mexico leaving their high-rise offices after the earthquake.
taylor h. (watchung hills regional highschool)
i believe that this photo takes place in a spanish country, you can tell from the street signs. I think that maybe there was a natural disaster or maybe an act of violence in a public area. Hence the reason for all of the people. If it was a natural disaster they are all moving to refuge and if it was an act of violence they are also probably moving to a place of refuge
Sam (CEMS)
Dear Taylor. H I agree with you because this is also what I said but I think it was one of the earthquakes in Mexico (a Spanish speaking country) and people are evacuating because there are so many earthquakes going on in Mexico. I also love how many details you added like: “if it was a natural disaster they are all moving to refuge” but one part is confusing which is: “and if it was an act of violence they are also probably moving to a place of refuge” which I would like to be more elaborate like who did the violence or more detail to prove that maybe it was an act of violence overall I like your comment and I give you an 8/10 it's really good but you can still improve. -Sam
Brandon HHHS (mi)
i think that there is an big event and that people are gathering around in the street to go to it.and some people are holding up signs so it could be a protest on something and i noticed that right in front of the red car there is a girl with a badge so maybe they are just getting out of work and going to the big event.
Kyle m (PA)
I think thee is some event going on because I see mostly everyone with a lanyard around their neck. Thy have the roads blocked off, I know this because I see no moving cars and the streets are filled with people.
Edwyn HHHS (School)
I think some kind of protest is going on. The crowd grew so large it overtook the street and organizers are trying to get it under control.
Patrick H. (New York)
This picture takes place in a Spanish country because all of the signs are in Spanish and the cars are driving in different directions than in the U.S. I think a strike/protest is happening because some of the signs say "reform", a lot of people look angry/sad, and some people (who probably work at the same building) are wearing similar clothing.
Landon (HHHS)
I think that some big event is happening and the people holding up signs are guides. In a theater or arena, you would have different floors (the numbers on the sign) and different rows (the letters after the numbers). All of the people have darker skin tones and the signs are in Spanish so I infer that this event is somewhere in a Spanish speaking country. I think that this is a fairly formal event because most of the men are in white, collared, button-up shirts. Most of the women also have on white shirts with red or black pull-over sweaters. There could have been a dress code for the event as all the people are dressed the same. You can see crossing guards sprinkled around the crowd. They are probably directing people where to go and clearing the way for the few cars and buses on the road
Christopher Sevinsky (Latham, New York)
This image shows a rally in progress. The sheer amount of people leads me to believe that this is such a major issue. How the are walking right in the street among the traffic shows how this rally was most likely spontaneous. Looking at these people and their faces shows that this is serious to all of them, because the show such passion. In the bottom left you can see a middle aged man holding his phone up, this is also seen many other places. They are doing this because they feel it is a part of history and they will document it. Seeing all of the signs and the megaphone makes me believe that there was a group that organized this event, a small group that gained a lot of momentum. The signs are written in some dialect of Spanish and are calling for reform. The signs show a call to reform 355, which is a apartment building and has rooms for offices. The signs show which floor the person is from and showing that the have a lot of representation. The most likely want better living conditions, or them to follow the current laws put in place.
Breidy (Shaker High School)
I think that this is a city in Mexico because of the signs and the language on the buses. I think that this is a job fair. since some of the people have signs that say 'piso' witch means floor so they could be all going to try to get a job. I also think its a job fair because of the way they are dressed. Most of the men and the women are dressed in dresses suits and ties, I think means they are trying to go somewhere that they should be fancy.
Moiz C. (Redmond)
I think that in this photo is some sort of gathering for a large group maybe a company or something. Or this could also be some sort of protest done by people all around this city. I think that it is some sort of gathering because many people are holding up signs that say "Piso-9-B". I know that piso means floor in spanish so I feel that the signs could be directed for specific people and where they need to go. Also there are people wearing bright colored vests so they could be the cops or the people to make sure everything stays intact. I also feel like this could be some sort of event where someone important is presenting something because most people seem to be dressed professionally and they are also looking in the same direction.
Claire C (Redmond, WA)
At first glance, the photo looks to be one taken at a rally or protest as the photo is packed with people and some are holding signs. But when you zoom in, one can see that most of the people don’t look unhappy. So there goes the rally theory. If people were out protesting, they’re likely upset over something or other. And none of the signs have any slogans dissing some politician, either. They just have the word ‘pisa’, or ‘floor’ in Spanish, and some numbers. Through that, I can tell this was taken in a Spanish speaking country. Which, unfortunately, encompasses most of a continent and some. There are empty cars mixed in the crowd, and most of them are in rows, giving the impression that this is in the middle of a traffic intersection. Some cars even seem to have been in the act of turning when the car owner decided to vacate the car. But interestingly, this doesn’t seem to be a spontaneous event, as nobody seems to look confused that hundreds of people are standing in the middle of a busy road. To sum it up, cars are stopped abruptly in the middle of a road and hundreds of sign-bearing Spanish-speaking people have taken to the streets, but it isn’t any sort of protest and nobody looks confused. This gives rise to the horrifying proposition that maybe, this is everyday life for these people. Talk about overpopulation! Of course, this doesn’t take into account the meaning of the word ‘pisa’ on the signs, which sadly is beyond my imagination to think up a reason for.
Annie D (USA)
In this photo, it looks as if people from a Spanish-speaking country are organized for some kind of a protest. You can tell that it’s in a Spanish-speaking country because most of the people in the photo have skin on the darker side and all of the signs (“Piso 2-A”, “Ruta 2”, “Reforma 355”, etc.) are all in Spanish. The roads are blocked-there are cars perpendicular to one another and there are so many pedestrians that it looks like it would be unsafe to drive. Many of the people in the photo are holding similar-looking signs, leading me to believe that this is a protest. There are other clues that point toward this narrative as well, including the man with the megaphone, the signs with “reforma” (reform) written on them, and the anxious facial expressions of the crowd. It’s a bit difficult to tell, but it looks as if there are building-shaped sketches on the signs of the protestors. This leads me to believe that the protest is related to some sort of land use and development issue. The large number of people with similar white collared shirts makes me wonder if they are all employed by the same company and the protest is related to one company in particular. However, there also seem to be a large number of people in the crowd who are on their phones, and look bored. This could mean that the vast majority of the crowd is completely unrelated to the protest, or that there could be some sort of road blockage up ahead outside of the photo.
Meghan O (Sammamish, WA)
At first I thought the picture was trying to portray simply an intersection in an overpopulated city but if you notice to the upper corner of the photo, there seems to be a sidewalk with rarely any people walking on it. I can assume that people are purposely trying to crowd the intersection and if you look closer, you'll be able to see the several individuals holding signs. The people seem to be all wearing semi-formal business attire which indicates that they may possibly be in the working class or white-collared, probably of Hispanic descent. With all of this information together it's makes sense that these people are protesting against/for a certain cause.
Hannah P. (Minnesota)
At first, because there are many people crowded in a street while holding up signs, that this was some type of protest. However, I then noticed that there actually isn't the amount of signs that are usually used during protests. Plus, the signs said, for example, "Piso 5-A," which is translated to "Floor 5-A." I also noticed that the majority of the people are wearing work clothes that would be seen in an office. This made me think that this was possibly a building evacuation. The signs could be making people aware of the evacuation. The faces of people look confused, but not necessarily mad or worried. Based on the signs, the outfits, and the people's expressions, I think that this is a picture of a building evacuation.
Lahari N (Washington)
Besides the dark skinned and dark haired people, the boards that say "Piso" and "Reforma" give away that the picture is located in a Spanish speaking country. In Spanish, "Piso" means floor, and there are many people who seem to be following a standard dress code of a white shirt, black tie, and an ID card which makes me think that these people are working for the same company. They are probably holding up the boards to identify which floor of the office building they are from. Just below that word, "Reforma" is visible and when I searched up the meaning, I realized it means "reform". With this, it's pretty clear to me that the crowd in the photo are protesting for improvement in social, political, or economical practices. The expressions are quite grim, but there doesn't seem to any violence. I can see a few people in blue vest who look like they are trying to keep everything calm during the protest.
Arnav Sachati (Redmond)
Based on how many people are crowded in this picture, i began to wonder why? after zooming in on the picture I could notice that many were in formal attire, a few even were in wearing lanyards of some sort. Based on my crude Spanish skills i was able to translate some of the signs to English "Piso 5-A" -> "Floor 5-A". Based on this and how many are crowding the streets with no where to go, hence the standstill of motorized traffic, I believe that this took place in Mexico. Around last week, i heard that there was a massive earthquake in Mexico. Based on the picture and my prior knowledge I am led to believe that this is the aftermath of the earthquake with people still staying outside. To confirm with this belief, we can look at the people in Orange and Yellow colored vests, you would ordinarily see these after some sort of disaster. In this picture one is even carrying a megaphone.
Alex (New York City)
After having examined this photo, I was able to notice the majority of these people seem to have an expression of action on their faces. There seems to be a large group of from what I observe to be people from a Spanish speaking country, hence all the signs in the photo are written in Spanish. I believe that with the devastating earthquake which took place in Mexico City, this photo might have been taken in Mexico City after the earthquake. The signs read in Spanish different sections of floors which might indicate an evacuation from a building. A majority of the people seem to be dressed in professional attire which leads me to the conclusion that this was an evacuation or an event in efforts to help the people affected by the earthquake.
Kaitlyn G (AOSE)
In this picture, it appears that a group of people, possibly in Mexico, are protesting some sort of social inequality. A certain organization may be leading the protest because many people are wearing similar attire and lanyards. Also, there are tents in the background which could be used to hand out flyers and signs about the protest. With this many people crowding the streets and wearing similar outfits, a protest is most likely occurring
York L. (Bellevue, WA)
I think that this picture was shot in a Spanish speaking country because of the characters on the signs. It also seemed that people were protesting on the streets due to the fact that people were walking on the streets and the traffic had been disordered. Some were holding speakers and cameras as well.
Adam g. (Redmond)
I think that there is some sort of protest going on in central or south America about getting a certain law passed or blocked depending on what it does. I think that because of the mass amount of people as well as some of them having signs and one person even having a megaphone. It also seems to be planned and not random because of the tents in and around the people and the people in the vests who are probably keeping the group in control.
Vidhi J. (Redmond, WA)
It seems like a very crowded place with no room for people to even step foot. Many of the men are dressed in formal white shirts which makes me think, that these are working men who might be there for a protest of some sort. When looking closely at the picture, it seems like some people are holding signs in Spanish, which leads to the conclusion that this might be somewhere in Mexico. Some people in the background are wearing bright orange outfits, monitoring people and making it a safe place. The streets on the far left look empty, which makes me sure that there is no such event but more of a serious purpose for people being there.
Manasvini C. (Kirkland, Washington)
Many people are holding signs reading "Piso" (floor), followed by a number and letter. Based on this, and the semiformal attire worn by many of the people in the image, I think that these people have just recently evacuated from an office building of some sort. Several people in orange vests are directing people through the street, which could also show that this picture was taken during a point of disarray. The aforementioned signs are in written in Spanish, as are the other words in the picture. Judging from this and the skin tones of the people in the image, I believe that this photo was taken in a Spanish-speaking country. This photo may have been taken during the recent, powerful earthquake that affected Mexico City.
Theo D (Redmond WA)
There are a lot of things that stand out in this image. The most obvious one is all the people crowing on the street. They are probably protesting something as they are holding up signs saying "Piso 2-B" and other combinations of numbers and letters. Zooming in on the signs, you can see that it says "reforma 355". Since these words are Spanish, i am guessing that this takes place in a Latin american country. I also notice that there are cars stalled on the road and the cars on the right are facing away from the camera as you can see the radio antennaes. There are also pop-up "tents"on the left and right. Among the crowd of people, you can see people wearing safety jackets and megaphones. Overall, it is difficult to find our exactly what is going on in this picture.
Sebastian Horstmann (Washington)
There are a lot of people either in a demonstration about different levels of a building, part of a "reform 355". I know this because "piso" is Spanish for "floor", and "Reforma" is Spanish for "reform". Based on the complexion, clothing/style, and language i would say that this took place somewhere in Mexico.
S Howe (WHRHS)
It looks like a very busy street in a spanish speaking country and the people look like they are trying to organize themselves in some way.
Brianna C (AOSE)
When I first looked at this picture I thought that the people in the streets were looking at something. As if the pope or someone of that importance had come and everyone wanted to see. After looking at everyone else's comments and inspecting the picture further I honestly do not know what it is. I think that it could be a protest because everyone is crowding the streets and stopping traffic. If you look closely a lot of people are wearing white shirts and ties or carrying around tags so it could be somewhat organized.
Frederick (Washington State)
In the picture, there are multiple people crowding what appears to be some street of some kind and there are multiple cars within those crowds. There are also tents up that are scattered around the street. Some of the people in the crowd look like they have some job that requires formal attire, like a dress shirt and tie, and there are casually dressed people. There are also people with microphones and megaphones. This is possibly a picture of a large convention or something based off how many people are in the street and because of the people with the megaphones and microphones. The tents could be a stage for the people speaking for whatever reason. There are also the people wearing the lanyards that might hint that there is a convention that they are at. We could understand this scenario more if we are able to identify a specific location from a sign or something and a sign showing what type event is specifically going on if it is a convention, protest or general public event.
Jay (Albany,Ny)
I think that in this picture people are protesting somewhere in Mexico by looking at the sign. And by looking at their outfit they look like they are lawyers.
Sophia (WHRHS)
I believe that this picture depicts the evacuation of Mexico after the earthquake due to the physical features of the people, the language on the signs, and the cars that seem to be abandoned on a main road.
Kevin Y (Washington)
Originally it seemed that there were a bunch of people crowding the streets in protest to something. But as I looked closer I realized that there were officials organizing people and signs being held up, directing people. The signs themselves hinted at something, most of the signs were labeled similarly. Something along the lines of, "Piso-9-B" with the words "Reforma 355". After further inspection it becomes obvious that this is a Spanish speaking country judging by its racial spreadsheet of people present. There are also several people wearing lanyards with some sort of ID attached to it. So once that was figured out I started thinking that this was some sort of convention. But not one of those Tech or game conferences you would find. There are no people dressed up in cosplay which you would normally find. There are also people dressed up in white shirts and ties and even some in full blown suits. So this is most likely some sort of official conference, possibly discussing whatever "Reforma 355" is. But with that I conclude my thoughts on this image and put out the idea that this is in fact some sort of official conference organized in a Spanish speaking country.
Grace S. (Sammamish)
I think the people in this picture are protesting against social injustice in Mexico. The people in the orange vests could be police or other officers trying to contain / manage the crowd. Many of the people are wearing work attire and this is probably because it is the middle of the day and they left work to protest.
Amber Catagnus (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
I think that in this picture people are evacuating from mexico because of the earthquake. There are tents in the background that people might have been in. There are many people crowded together, and most men are wearing formal button down shirts. That must mean that they were coming from work and had to leave very quickly. The people with the badges around their necks must be official like with the government, since they are in the front of everyone.
Kaitlyn G (AOSE)
It is a great observation that people could possibly be fleeing the recent earthquakes in Mexico due to their mass numbers and business attire.
Brianna C (AOSE)
I thought the same thing initially but after looking closely, I believe that if they were evacuating they would be carrying bags and taking belongings with them. It was smart of you to think that it would be in a rush.
Christopher Sevinsky (Latham, New York)
Although this is a very good thought that is well supported, I don't think that people suffering from these earthquakes would be carrying around signs calling for reform. If you look closely the people are walking among the traffic and carrying signs and megaphones. I believe that they are calling for some sort of reform for an apartment and building complex.
Nitisha G. (Sammamish)
I think that in this picture, people have evacuated their home in Mexico, and are going to the street to avoid too much of damage from the earthquake. I believe this as the people have crowded the streets and all the traffic is stopped. There are also police guards, wearing bright orange outfits, handling the people and making sure that everybody is safe and secure. There are a couple people wearing formal attire and they have a stand on the side of the picture, I think that these individuals are helping the crowd with any problems and trying to make this disaster a little better. People in the crowd are dressed in different manners because the earthquake was not very planned and most of the people looked panicked. Finally, I think that this is in Mexico because the words on the bus and signs are in Spanish.
Mia D. (AOSE)
That is an approach I would not have ever come up with. What makes you think that they are avoiding earthquake damage? There are no indications that a natural disaster has taken place.
Aditi Joshi (Redmond, WA)
In this picture the street intersection is lined with a ton of people with no room to spare. A lot of the men are wearing white formal shirts and lanyards. There some tents in the crowd that look like taco stalls. There are some people holding up similar signs that show it might be a protest of some sort. There aren’t any bikes in the crowd which makes me think that the general climate is probably rainy in this time of the year. The pigmentation of the majority is dark and the buses have route numbers written on them in Spanish. Which makes me think that the location for this is somewhere in Central or south America. The street on the right rear side is empty which further strengthens my hypothesis of a protest going or the people being there for some common purpose.
Mia D. (AOSE)
What leads you to believe that these are taco stalls? I personally believe that the tents serve more of a purpose as a gathering site. Also, it looks fairly bright outside, so I disagree with your statement regarding the climate. However, you made some great observations!
Anna Davis (Arkansas)
This picture looks like there is a mass group of people and they are protesting about something because they are all pretty much wearing black and white clothes. It seems like there is something that was destructive or something because they are all facing the same way. It also looks like all of the cars are empty and maybe there were so many people that the people in the cars had to evacuate and just walk somewhere else. Some people have signs that they are holding up and they have a number on them and a word "piso" which means floor. I really do not know what is going on but it seems very chaotic!
Julia b. (little rock, AR)
The people seem calm so I think there was a drill of some sort that caused them to evacuate from their business building. The signs are in Spanish and the word "piso" means "floor" so the people are going to the sign that says there floor level.
Kaitlyn G (AOSE)
It is interesting that you noticed how the people do seem very calm. Therefore, you it is possible that they could be performing some sort of drill, maybe an evacuation drill.
Kent (Little Rock, Arkansas)
It looks like it is a protest or riot going on through the streets. It looks like some of the other people around there are wearing some badges and they are probably pretty official people like associated with the government. they are also holding up signs that say "piso" on them and after using google translate it means floor in Spanish. I honestly don't know what that means. It could also be a special event or a parade of sorts as most of them are wearing the same thing, white shirts and a black tie.
Jett E. (LRCA)
People just got the news about the shooting and they are trying to get home as fast as they can!!!
Jay (Albany,Ny)
I don't think so because some people have a sign in their hand and it look like they are protesting.
Patrick H. (New York)
I disagree, this picture was most likely taken in a Spanish country. People are holding up signs and possibly protesting. The cars are also driving opposite directions than the roads in the United States.
Brynn D. (Little Rock, Arkansas)
I think something happened like an earthquake, because they are all in the middle farthest from the buildings. They don't look rushed because there is nowhere to go. The people in the white shirts could all be from the same office building.
Ben B. (Little Rock, AR)
I think is a big traffic jam because of a natural disaster or terrorist attack.
George G (Arkansas)
I think that it may be some type of building protest or something because most of the people are wearing about the same thing and they have signs that say "floor", and "1".
JJAOSE (NJ)
What type of building do you think that the people came from? Perhaps an office building (because they are dressed formally)?
JJAOSE (NJ)
From what type of building do you believe that these individuals came? Perhaps an office building, as many of them are dressed professionally?
Tyler McLaughlin (Colonie, NY)
What leads to you to believe this is an act of protest? Do the people's faces appears angered, or distressed? Do they seem to be protesting or evacuating? What more do you see?
Joseph (Little Rock, AR)
I think this is 911 where they are all curious and they wanted to see what was happening and to see if they could help.
Lena Strauss (Little Rock, Arkansas)
I think an earthquake happened in Mexico because of many reasons. People in work clothes are outside and some look worried. There are Spanish words on the signs and buses/trains. I'm guessing the people had to evacuate because he word piso means floor in Spanish. The posters have numbers on it.
Andrew H (Little Rock Arkansas)
People are protesting through the streets somewhere.
Logan F. (Kirkland, WA)
These people are marching out to show their love for the loss of the people who lost their lives during the mass shooting at Los Vegas. By going out and showing they aren't afraid.
Kimberly Reilly (Shaker High School)
I wouldn't have thought that the people in this photo are doing that! I think that is a good idea, but if that were the case I feel like there would be more signs and posters. Also, the posters are in Spanish so I feel like it wouldn't be about Las Vegas; but I am not the moderator so I do not know the circumstance.
Mrs. Kamin's Class (Lakewood, Colorado)
We think it could be in a Spanish speaking county. It could be the recent Earthquake in Mexico. We think some type of disaster happened and everyone had to evacuate. They are converging on the signs from the floor they evacuated from. We notice they are all wearing lanyards.
Summer C (Little Rock)
I think that something big happened and everyone is trying to evacuate from the place they are in. I don't think it is like a huge building fell or something like that because the people don't looked worried or hurt. They look like they are just calmly walking away from whatever. There are lots of people and not many cars so I think maybe they left a building for a drill or they are going to see something very important looking.
Jett E. (LRCA)
Prob.
KBurkett (Little Rock)
They are probably directing people where to go and clearing the way for the few cars and buses on the road.
Maddie M (Arkansas)
I think that something really big happened and they are all crowding around and coming to see what happened. It also looks like they are protesting against something but i'm not really sure.
George G (Arkansas)
mabye
Grace (Little Rock)
I think it is a big traffic jam and lots of people are stuck. The people look confused and they don't know where they are going.
bre carter (ayer elementary)
I think that this took place in India or Mexico because almost everyone is like Mexicans and the signs they are holding up look like they are in Spanish and the streets are super crowded in this picture I think that they maybe are holding up signs because they want something.
Cara M (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
I think some accident happened, not particularly with a car but with a building. I think this because a bunch of people are crowded in the streets and are all staring at something in front of them, some even taking videos and photos. I think this picture takes place in a Spanish speaking country because on the signs some people are holding up, there is writing in Spanish. Some of the signs say "piso" which means "floor" in Spanish. Maybe an accident happened to a business place, or a hotel caught fire or fell, and everyone ran down to the street. Maybe it was a fire drill because no one seems panicked. It also seems some-what organized because the signs seem to be directing people to the right area, or line.
Brianna C (AOSE)
Good job translating that! After reading your comment the picture makes much more sense to me.
Valerie (NY, NY)
I see a huge crowd protesting, disrupting the traffic on the streets. By just looking, I think most of the Protestants are middle-aged working professionals from the office from their attires. Most of them are keeping their calm and don't seem outrageous for such an event. Therefor I think the protest is towards some government or a specific authority that did against this group of people's benefits.
jane.aose (AOSE)
I see in this picture what looks like it is a protest of people in a certain business or business that are linked to each other. My reasoning behind this is because almost there are swarms of people, everyone that you can see is wearing a lanyard with a badge attached to it that might be there ID for work. Also I noticed that people were holding signs above the crowd maybe to signify different groups and/or statements.
Lauren K. (AOSE)
In this picture I think people are protesting something. I think this because they are crowding the streets and some of them are holding up signs. The signs have spanish words so I am assuming this photo takes place in a spanish-speaking country.
Kaya Pratt (North Carolina)
Looks like a lot of people, it seems to be like a traffic jam, the only difference is that i see more people than cars. I also see people wearing white uniforms, like a business parade or a form of protest. I also see people carrying signs that say Pisa 5 A, Piso 8 B, Piso 6 A. Piso sounds like a Spanish word so my guess is that this is taking place in a spanish country.
QuinnG (AOSE)
I think this takes place in Mexico. My reason behind this is because the signs that people are holding up are in Spanish. I also believe it is in Mexico because there was a recent earthquake. The streets seem to be very busy. I think the people in the streets are possibly waiting for family members, or they are looking at the destruction of the earthquake.
Frank (NYC)
I think this happen on a Spanish speaking place. Because of the street signs are Spanish. This is maybe a convention for sell houses . There are some people wearing a suit and have a ID card.
Payton Griffin (Albany)
Good thought on them crowding to sell houses. But I'm wondering where you see these indications, what makes you say their selling houses?
Mrs. Morales and Class (Elk Grove Village, IL)
In this picture, we notice hundreds of people who are dressed up and standing closely together. They seem unable to move well because of the large crowd. We are sure this is not in the United States because of the following reasons: 1) The traffic light looks different, 2) The signs are in Spanish, 3) The people look to be all of one common race, 4) The bus looks different than our buses, 5) It's unlikely that so many people and cars would be allowed to be together in the United States. We can't be sure, but we think the people may be protesting, waiting to vote or many reporters are presenting a news story. The people seem a little confused, but not angry or even impatient.
Marlon Bamaca (Ms. Jaffcoat's clasroom)
I see a lot of people and make sure I think there are people dressed in white I thought I was hitting a politician
Lina (New York)
In this picture,I notice there are many people around the street and it looks like very crowd. There are many cars and some people who wear the uniform. They looks like taking part in a business parade. I think there are a big festival in this place.
jane.aose (AOSE)
I agree with the business parade because the signs that they are holding looks like they are separated into groups of some sort. And maybe it isn't just one big business but multi big businesses because of the different designs on the signs
Nirav Jadav (New York )
In this picture, most people wearing suit and look like employee of any company (Stock Company). May be any Spanish country or may be something political issues.
Jerry (NYIT)
in my opinion, it happened in a country which says Spanish, and it's a immigrant country. it more like a big conference or a huge job interview. Most of them suit and tie, and have a kind of ID card on the front. But i don't understand why there is no traffic-man to regulate road. it's chaotic and i believe cars cannot move a step. so i think it happened all of a sudden and caught by photographer.
QuinnG (AOSE)
After reading this, I realized that this must have been a very sudden event because the streets are so chaotic. It makes sense as to why the cars are surrounded by people in the streets.
PINK (nyc)
You can see the most people are facing to you,and there is a open field in the top left corner. It proves that not everywhere likes the picture and these people have their own purpose. They might be waiting to purchase the house or something similar.
Annabel (WHRHS)
This photo depcits a massive buildup of cars and people. Some people seem to be holding signs or pickets which could imply a protest or strike of some kind. The fact that such a large population of people allows me to assume that there is a panic or crisis affecting an entire city.
Victoria (New york)
In this picture we see many people gather in a public place, in the middle of the street. They seem to be serious and patient as if they're waiting for an event. I think that it's a professional meeting because of their outfit. Some of theme are holding a sign just to "sort out" different groups.
QuinnG (AOSE)
I never thought of this photo being some kind of professional event, but now that you mention it, I do see many of the people with ID which can lead me to believe it.
Lilian (ny)
Most people wore suit or white shirts with tie and some kinds of ID. Cars drove to the same direction, but people walk to the different ways. Some guys behind the light signs stood on a higher stage, looks like a leaders and did some commands.
Mohammed (NY)
After analyzed this picture, I think that people in the picture tries to go to a huge workshop or business event. That's way there are wearing whites shirts, putting Employee's ID and holding a lot of groups sings.
Tyler Sanderson (North Carolina)
In this picture I think people are evacuating a recent earthquake that occurred in Mexico. I say this because the crowd is moving as one and, if you search Google for the image, "Mexico" is searched. If you then click the mini icon of the photo, "Earthquake" is searched. I also notice that people are holding signs that say, "Floor 8-B"
Daniel (new york)
I think it must be a Spanish speaking country. I guess it is Barcelona. it is a demonstration.
Meet Patel (New York,NY)
In this picture, people wearing formal its look like they are employees of company. And they are against the company. So, they are on the rally they are against somethings.
Jinghan Li (New York)
A ton of people held a demonstration. They ignored the traffic jam and walked through it.
Huanhuan Chen (NY)
I guess there is a demonstration which relevant to the real estate. They are arguing something in front of a tall building on the main street. Most of them ware suits and ties with ID cards. There is no people crying and depressed, even few of them shows their smiles.
MISS SONAL (NEW YORK )
I noticed that there are so many people looking here and there and some of them holding some boards that say Piso. Most of the people are wearing white shirts and ties.It is also possible that it is a protest.
venkata mounik (new york)
This picture seems to be a Spanish speaking country since the signs said "piso" which means floor. and sign of that board says it's against a construction company because people are holding different boards like piso 5-a, 6-a, 9-b, 2-a.
Carlos ruiz (Ms. Jeffcoat's classroom)
I see many people and I think they are in a march or something like that, because I think they are protesting something and that is what you see in the picture,I think that would be all
Prakruti Sayam (New York)
I think that people are doing the campaign about the piso which means "The floor" it seems that some of the real estate member came out on road to fight for that and allows some college student to join their campaign. Due to this a large road jammed is being occured.
qianyun Wen (NEW YORK)
I noticed that our the people in picture dress up well, and some people hold a number card, signal card and ID card. I think the people is joining a very meeting or trading meeting.
Kai (NYC)
People in south America they were in the job fair. It was very lots of people. I saw there is someone raise a note write Piso.
Gerardo (Ms. Jeffcoat's)
perhaps it is a student protest or a protest against the government by a better education and I see the reflection of the bad ordenamiento of the political power. Maybe they are people evacuating buildings and taking care of them since the buildings can collapse
jane.aose (AOSE)
maybe a building did collapse and all of the people are evacuating but it looks like they aren't very scared so maybe it was a drill. Or maybe there was a suspicious smell in a building they all came out of and they had to evacuate
Ms. Giddings Class (Northport, Maine)
Hispanic Civilians Protesting About The Wall: We think that they're protesting about the wall because they are offended because americans want to build a wall.
Ivan C (Mrs jeffcoats room)
In this picture it is really crowded in the streets. I see lots of people and cars all in one area. Another closer look at this image i see lots of people wearing white and black witch can mean they are either protesters or workers going to work or people getting out from work. Then again i see some people with yellow caution shits on witch could mean a disaster has happened.
luis (Mr. jeffcoat)
i see people leaving because it can be the earthquake happen there. It make me say that because i see a lot of people leaving to go somewhere safe.i see that someone is holding a sign with a number 1 on it.
Carlos (jeffcoat room)
I see that there is many people just walking toward something. There is mans and woman dress in white dress shirt. I feel like this could be Mexico because the earthquake that happened.
Diana Arrieta (Ms. Jaffcoat's clasroom)
In the picture there is a lot of people in the road, the people in the road look like they are workers an in a protest, some person have sings with letter and others have only numbers and they are only women and men
Jaimin Prajapati (new york)
They are the employees of crane co. who manufacture floor. their employees are on road doing protest against government due to some problems faced by their company.
Jacqueline (Ms. Jeffcoat´s classroom)
The people in this picture are protesting for a reform because you can see in the signs they are holding. It looks like it is a reform for construction because in the signs they have a picture of a house. This a big protest and looks like they all want the reform to be accepted. This looks like they are in a Hispanic country fighting for their rights.
Kayla Weston (Ms. Jeffcoats room)
I think that these people are standing in the road because they are evacuating because of something that is dangerous. I also see signs that are in a different language maybe these people are in japan and are evacuating because of the earthquake that happened. I can also see cars and street lights that make me think that it is a street that they are standing in.
Nouf (Manhattan)
I think they're going to conference!
Javier (North Carolina)
I see a lot of people walking with signs looks like they are looking for a person or a group of some kind. I see multiple sign that people are holding walking around. I see a lot of people walking just lost.
Courtney (Ms. Jeffcoat's room)
in this picture it looks like a bunch of chaos in some very busy streets. i say this because it looks like a bunch of cars got left in the street and a bunch of people are crowding the street. it looks like mostly business people because a lot of people are in business casual clothes and are wearing badges it also looks like some people are looking up at the sky as if something is happening.
Kiara Martinez (Garrison Middle School)
There is a lot of people crowded in the street. Some people have tags in front of them. Other people seem to have cameras. This may be an evacuation because everyone is mostly moving in the same direction. There seem to be some cars stuck in the traffic of people.
Angel G (North Carolina)
What I can see is that their is a lot people in the road and looking at someone It makes me think that because there is a lot of police and security and their is people wearing white What more I can see it that lots of people are wearing white and it looks like they are calibrating a festival
Maribel (Ms.jeffcoat)
There a lot of people crowded in one place there are people between cars and they are like in the middle of a street. I see that cause i think a earthquake is happening and people are trying to move away from it. That there maybe a parade or something that a lot of people are gathered up
jhovani (Ms.jeffcoat room)
I think they are protesting about something about a building because on one of the posters says piso 5 and other one says piso 2.
JG (Garrison)
In this picture, people are not protesting but they are doing something against something.
Kameron P. (Walla Walla)
In this picture, it looks like to me, that an activity is happening or concert. Maybe as well be an event that is dangerous and everyone is evacuating. This could probably be located in Brazil or South America, or as well Africa since there is barely any white people in the picture
hunter (mrs.jeffcoats classroom)
I think that they are having a group meet up.I see a lot of people in one spot I can see that there is no one in the cars.
Kalob (Rocky Point, NC)
I think what's going on this picture is people trying to get to some sort of important event. It apparently so important that they walk in the middle of the road. What makes me say this is because a lot of the people look like they are wearing similar attire. Also it looks to be in somewhere other than America such as Mexico or Asia. The reason I say this is because all the people in the picture seem to be of brown skin color.
Natalia Salazar (Walla Walla)
it looks like people are evacuating or heading somewhere. Everyone seems to be walking in the same direction and there are signs too. Everyone is wearing some kind of formal outfit or work clothes. Some of them are wearing which seems to be VIP badges? which they may head to see someone important.
Lacey w (North carolina)
There is a traffic jam, and everyone is trying to get where they need to be. There are a bunch of people in the middle of the road, with cars parked or going straight and some are gong sideways but people are surrounding the cars so the cars are most likely parked. There are tents pitched up in the background, and most people are wearing dressy clothes.
Cara M (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
I didn't notice the tents in the back!
Nathan (Ms. Jeffcoats room)
their is a lot of people walking around in the street, I think because they might not have a car or enough money to ride the bus, it might be i china or some other foreign country
Schab (ww)
1. There is a booth set up. 2. There are cars stuck in traffic. 3. There is a man holding a sign. 4. There are a LOT of people. All: This might be a special event because in the background there are fewer people so the event might take place on this street.
Destiny (NC)
There are a bunch of people walking around in traffic in a city area. There are a bunch of people crowded everywhere with cars trying to get through. They also could be protesting.
Rayanna Ridgway (Garrison middle school)
In this picture, I noticed that many well-dressed people are crowding a street way. I believe this may be a big work event or even a busy time of day.
amanda verkist (stormfire) (washington)
traffic jam from too long of a red light
Mrs. Lang (South River, NJ)
We noticed there are many people, and there are signs in Spanish that say Piso, which means "floor." We think that the building that these people, who are all wearing badges, come from, is possibly being evacuated. It is also possible that it is a protest. We think this is taking place in an Hispanic country, since the signs are in Spanish.
Alex Rogers (Shaker High School)
In this picture it seems to be an evacuation of a public or office building as there are people with credentials around their neck while also being in a universal uniform, being black and white, and most people are dressed in business casual clothing. It is also in a Spanish speaking country as there are people holding signs saying "Piso" meaning floor with a number next to it maybe signifying the section of the building. there is also some thing happening behind the camera as many people look past it and it must be serious as there is a mass of people look on, even enough to fill a road and stop cars completely.
Zachary M (Latham)
I know that this is related to the vote that occurred in Catalonia, where the citizens were voting to possibly leave Spain. I know this because of the words on signs, words such as "piso" which could mean tier, so perhaps it's to show some sort of voting distinctions, and words under some signs saying "reforme" and then a number, indicating a vote for a reform, which is what the word translates to, and I know that the word is in the command form, meaning that it could be a protest or the title of the vote. The reason the people are all in one area and seem to be unmoving could be due to the controversy of the vote. The people of Catalonia voted, and 90% of the population voted for independence, even though the Spanish government said that they did not recognize the vote and that it was not official. This led to many protests, and unrest. This picture could have been taken before the vote however, perhaps because people were being prevented from going to voting places, so perhaps they're all trying to get in somehow, and cannot due to the controversy between Catalonia and Spain.
Brianna (www)
I think that this picture was taken during a major event in a Spanish speaking country. The reason why I believe this is because there are signs that say Piso 5-6 which means floor 5-6. There are many cars between the people and a bus. It might be an evacuation because of the recent earthquakes that have happened.
TRagule (Shaker High School )
In this picture there are signs all over that say "pisco". Pisco in Spanish means floor. By their facial expressions it seems like they are either serious or upset with something. They look like they are watching some big event, they aren't moving so it must be important. Maybe something political? they are all in work attire. It definitely was not planned by the way it looks.
Austin VDBG (Albany New York)
I think that this picture was taken in the streets of Mexico City. The streets may be crowded due to people evacuating from the destroyed areas from the massive earthquake that recently occurred. People seemed distressed based on their facial expressions. A lot of the people seemed to be dressed in work clothing. Perhaps a building that most of the people worked in was damaged or destroyed from the earthquake. There are people holding signs that say "piso" which means floor, and it is followed by a number. Maybe it is a place where people are going to gather.
Kelsey Wells (Latham)
I first think that this picture was taken in a Spanish speaking country, probably somewhere in Latin America. I think that these people are gathered for some type of event. If you look closely at the sign, it says "piso" which means "floor" in Spanish. It makes me think of some kind of large venue space where there are many different levels of viewing, which is where I think these people may be going. It may be some kind of political event due to how they're dressed, they look as though they're going somewhere professional. The cars and buses seem to me that they just got caught up in the swarms of people, they looked parked and off to me because I don't really see any brake lights or fumes.
Mr Franke's 4th Grade (Eagle Rock El. LA, CA)
My class first observed that there were signs in Spanish, which led them to the idea that this was in a country like Spain or Mexico. They further agreed that this was in the middle of a big street. They said this because of the cars and the one streetlight in the middle. They also observed that some of the people in the crowd appeared to be police, or security of some kind. Their evidence for this claim was that some of the people were wearing badges of some kind, and these people all wore white shirts, which looked like some kind of uniform. We then went back to have a closer look, and they all agreed that people were not happy about being outside, and they said this based on the expressions on people's faces. This led to the idea that maybe they were on the street because of something bad that had happened, like an earthquake or a fire. We said that because of chaos in the streets.
Johnna (Shaker High School)
In this picture I see people evacuating something. I think this may be the case because why else would a massive number of people be walking in one direction in the middle of the road. I don't think this is a protest because people don't look angry or have a protesting sort of body language, but I do see some people holding up signs. On some of the signs that the people are holding it says "piso 8-8" and "piso 5-a". Piso in spanish means floor so I'm making the assumption that people are escaping a building with many floors, hence all the people. Maybe it's a business place like a work place because the majority of the people look like they're dressed up. They're wearing nice white dress shirts, ties, i even see some people wearing lanyards with probably identification or something to let them into their office or wherever they came from. The majority of the people don't look too upset I even see someone smiling which makes me confused. I also see two men helping hold up a woman to walk which makes me believe she had gotten hurt somehow? Going back to the signs with possible floor numbers on them, maybe this has something to do with the earthquake that hit Mexico recently, and business people are evacuating a big building. The people are holding up floor numbers so that people who belong or work on that floor can join the rest of their group just to get organized.
Mia D. (AOSE)
In this photo, there are tons of people squished together on a street. It is clearly a street, as there are buses and cars struggling to get through the crowd. Most of the people seen in the photo are dressed very professionally, which leads me to believe that they are all members of a company. Some of the people in the picture are holding up signs that say "Piso", followed by a number and a letter. "Piso" means floor in Spanish. This leads me to believe they are protesting an aspect of their company. Perhaps, the people holding up signs are representatives of the floor in which they work on. Another option could be that some sort of accident has occurred, causing all of the company's members to flood into the streets. The people could be holding the signs so that everyone stays near their floor's representative, maintaining a system of organization during the period of chaos.
Hope B. (Albany )
I think that this picture displays an emergency evacuation of some sort. I think it would be considered an "emergency" evacuation due to their facial expressions. They look very distressed and frightened. Also, the people in this photo look like they are business workers. Their attire looks professional and each of them have their name tags/badges around their neck. You can also tell that this picture is located in a Spanish speaking country because of the Spanish language shown on the boards they are holding.
Maggie E (Shaker High School)
In this picture, I believe that the people are evacuating from the a very large building. There are multiple people holding up signs with numbers and Spanish words, which means that this must be occurring in a Spanish speaking country. People are using the signs to group people together based on what floor they were on in order to make sure that everyone got out of the building. Most of the people are in business attire and some even have name tags on. This may mean that the building had business offices in it or was a meeting place. The people look concerned and confused. I believe that they may have been leaving the city due to the hurricane. This also most likely occurred in a large city due to the fact that all of the people are in the middle of the street. There was not another place for them to go.
Cameron Martinez (Shaker)
Some people in the crowd are holding signs that say Piso- and then a number. I took Spanish and piso means floor so when the sign says Piso-5 it means fifth floor. There are people ALL over the place, it is very crowded and many people are in their work clothes. I think that this was from the earthquake from Mexico. They all seem to be from a Hispanic decent plus the signs are in spanish. There seems to be no one in the cars and many people are standing still. The signs that say piso could be to identify what floor they were on. A gentle man has a phone in the front recording or taking a picture so this could be moments after the earthquake.
DanSavSHS (NY)
Ok so this is my idea. There is an absurd amount of people in the street. An absurd amount. Enough to fill huge office buildings ? And seeing as they are all still in their office uniforms , business outfits leads me to believe there were fires in multiple buildings and everyone had to evacuate and just flooded the street because it was so crowded. Or multiple building collapsed because a handful of people are on their phones who seem to be recording the event , and people are holding up signs that translate to " Floor ____" Lastly i realize there is no one inn any of the cars so they left them in a hurry.
Hannah R (Albany NY)
This picture seems to be taking place in a Spanish speaking country because of all the signs shown throughout the crowd that are in Spanish. The crowd may have something to do with a big business that is in the area. Almost every body in the crowd is dressed in business clothing.
Madison Moneymaker (Shaker)
I think that this may be an evacuation. It seems like people are rushing to get away from something. But they're also holding up signs, so it may be a reform movement. This is definitely taking place somewhere in Spain. It could be that they're trying to get a building reconstructed which explains the signs they're holding.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
Thank you all for participating in What's Going On in This Picture? today. Be sure to continue looking to see what more you can find, and perhaps discuss your ideas further. On Thursday please return to the blog to learn more when the image caption and article link are revealed. We look forward to hearing from you again soon!
Alexis (Albany)
The picture appears to be in a different country, a Spanish speaking country because the signs say 'piso' which means floor in Spanish. Whats going on looks like a large protest. People have flooded the streets and are holding signs. A lot of people are dressed similarly in a white shirt with something hanging from their necks on a lanyard so maybe they are protesting a job they all share.
Cara M (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
I never thought of these people as protestors. Good idea!
Jordan M (Shaker High School)
I believe that this picture takes place in a Spanish speaking country, due to the sign saying "piso". I believe that this could possibly be a press conference of some sort. The streets are flooded with people which makes it seem as if you would not want to miss this event. The people are all dressed very nicely and are wearing the same lanyards as if they were entry passes to an event.
Elaine Gaynor (Latham, NY)
The men and women with signs make me wonder if there is some sort of event going on. It is as if they are taxi drivers and they are advertising that their taxi is vacant. The signs also help me infer that this is taking place in a country that is literate in a form of Spanish. These two clues don't make much sense together so it makes me wonder why these people are in the street and why is no one smiling?
Tyler (Shaker High)
Looks like everyone got out of work or a evacuation is in place. The small white signs look like they are in Spanish and look like meeting spots maybe, because they all have different numbers.
Sam S (latham, ny)
This picture seems to be in a Spanish speaking country since the signs said "piso" which means floor. There are a lot of people in a street that are dressed nice, with security badges that look slightly confused which makes me believe that this is a evacuation of a business or company.
Riley A. (albany ny)
it looks like this takes place in a foreign country. From the hustling people to the signs. The signs read "Piso" that means floor in Spanish. Maybe that is talking about how busy the road is? The expressions on the peoples faces are very worried and hustling.. Do they look like they are rushing to get somewhere? yes. There is a stop sign that says green but you can see that everyone cant get any where. There are less cars and more people. I see more white shirts then any color there with black ties. Maybe, they are helping the hustling city?
Jaclyn Vigo (Latham,NY)
I think this is in a Hispanic country because it says "piso" which means floor in Spanish. It seems as if people are evacuating from a building and they are going based off on what level floor they were on. Mainly everyone seems to be in business attire as if they were just taken out of work. If you look at most of the men's faces on the left side they all look very mad. Perhaps they are mad that they are stuck in this traffic that clearly is not moving at all.
Noah P (Latham)
I think because of the street signs that this is taking place in a Spanish speaking country. Many of these people are in business clothing and some are wearing work badges around their necks. I think that they might be trying to get away from something as if they are evacuating.
I'd Rather Not (New York)
It's a regular day in China.
Alex Rogers (Shaker High School)
I respectfully disagree, due to the Spanish language on the signs I believe it is in a country that predominantly speaks Spanish.
Stephanie Glinatsis (Sarasota Florida)
There are people gathered together for a business convention. They are probably somewhere on a Columbia city or some other Spanish speaking country. The people are holding up signs which say floor in spanish and they all have a mixed skin color indicating that they are probably of the spanish culture. They are all wearing suits and ties and look like they just got off of the buses which brought them to the convention. They could be getting grouped together for their certain place and study. The people holding the signs will probably bring them to the floor they are indicated to be on. The cars in the background are empty indicating that they are either parked or the drivers ran out of gas. They probably did not run out of gas because that would be too big of a coincidence, but it is a possibility. The people do look calm and one guy in the front has a smile on his face which means wherever they are the people probably want to be there. Everyone is also very well dressed and some have lanyards on their necks which could be vip passes for the business convention. One girl in the very front looks like she is being carried which means that somehow she got hurt. This could have been from getting off of the bus to go into the convention. Most of the people look like they are above the age of thirty meaning that they have some experience and know what they are doing which is probably why they are at a convention for work.
Zachary M (Latham)
I understand what you're saying, and I think it's very interesting, but I'm curious as to if Columbia is often home to business conventions or if you know of one that is currently going on in the country?
Noah R (Shaker High School)
This may be an evacuation site from the recent hurricane in Mexico. I see multiple signs with the Spanish language.
Gavin (Venice Florida)
It is in a Spanish speaking country because the signs say piso which means floor in Spanish. I also think it is a evacuation because people are in business suits which would mean they just got out of work; recently there also was an earthquake that hit Mexico recently. The numbers and floors people are holding up is where people should go if the are in that floor.
Ms. Heather's 8th Grade (Northport, Maine)
We agree with your theory, but we were wondering why everything in the picture was intact?
Samantha Coluzzi (Venice, Florida)
I think that this is a convention because of the amount of people. I also think that it is happening in Spain because of the people and the signs are in Spanish. I also see that it is very crowed and there are a lot of people in suits and ties.
Nathaniel Fenton (Florida)
What is going on- I think that this is some sort of evacuation in a Hispanic country. How do you know- I think this because of the thousands pouring the roads, people evacuating their cars, and that there are mainly Hispanic looking. What else do you see- I see people holding signs that say reform and piso(floor). Also there are people holding signs that have numbers on them.
Connor (Venice)
I think they are evacuating because it seems like a lot of people are trying to leave and there are buses and cars trying to leave. Also it looks like there are security guards or police directing them.
Noah R (Shaker High School)
I agree, they're probably evacuating from the recent earthquake.
Jordan M (Shaker High School)
I would have to disagree with this because i feel if they were evacuating, they would have scared or frantic facial expressions. Also, the people wouldn't be dressed up if it were an evacuation. I don't believe it is possible for this to be an evacuation because no one looks scared or in a panic.
DanSavSHS (NY)
I would agree with this comment. This is genius. Because what else could it possibly be? I do not see any one directing the people though so I am not sure if you are confusing the people in suits as security guards ?
shyann (sms)
I think in this picture there are people at a big event. It is very crowded because everyone is trying to get to a place where they can be, see and hear the people. The cars are trying to find a place to park.
Daddy Zeus (Mt.Olympus)
It is insanely obvious to see whats going on in this picture. As you can see, the people in this picture are swarming the streets in order to attack all of the government officials in their offices. You can see their political signs. Just look at all of their faces, they are very, very, mad at whoever they are swarming to.
Madison Moneymaker (Shaker)
This may be true, but if you know the language or look it up you can see that "piso" means floor and "reforma" means reform. That doesn't seem like it could have much to do with politics.
Sam S (latham, ny)
I understand your reasoning, however; in the back of the picture (top) you can see other people walking in the other direction and also many of the people in the picture appear to be standing still which makes me believe that they are not going to attack all the government officials in their office.
Maggie E (Shaker High School)
I do not believe that they are attempting to attack government officials. Although this is a good idea, all of the people look very confused and unorganized. If this was an attack, it everyone would be more organized and have a set plan. There is more evidence that this is an evacuation rather than an attack.
Bryce Gartside (Venice, FL)
I think people are getting out of their cars to look at the recent eclipse. I know this because they are looking at the sky and everyone is out of their cars and not driving. The cars are weird.
Alexis (Albany)
i have to disagree with you because most people in the photo are not wearing sunglasses and the eclipse is very bad for your eyes. If people were to have been looking up at it, so many people wouldn't be doing so w out something protecting their eyes. Also, there are quite a few people in the image that are dressed similarly holding signs that say floor in Spanish. The floor is opposite of the eclipse.
TRagule (Shaker High School )
I'm not trying to be rude, but i don't see a lot of people looking at the sky. Everyone seems to be looking all around not at one specific place.
Cameron Martinez (Shaker)
I don't know if they would be looking at the eclipse since you need special glasses to see it. If you look at the sun directly you would injure your eyes
Ashten (SMS)
I think people are setting up a big arrival party because there are a bunch of buses and cars. It could be one of those things like a yard sale. Some people are wearing these cards around there necks and it reminds me of what we learned history about how the people during the war had to wear these things. I think they are moving some where or the hurricane is coming and they are trying to get out in time.
Hope B. (Albany )
I totally understand why you would think this but, a yard sale is like a happy event. If you look at each individuals facial expressions, you can tell this situation taking place seems more serious.
Guilah (N)
I believe that the mob of people filling up the crowded streets may be trying to cause awareness for “Piso.” I say this because there is a crowded street of people holding up signs and wearing lanyards that indicate that they are promoting “piso.” I could find out their cause of being there.
Nick (New Jersey)
I think that these are people picking up people from an airport. This is because they are holding up signs which means that they are looking for a specific person, so they can drive them wherever they need to go. I think that these people are the people from Puerto Rico.
Kelsey Wells (Latham)
I like your thought about the signs people are holding up being connected to an airport. However, if you translate the signs "piso" means floor. Therefore it wouldn't make sense that these signs are being used to identify people. I do agree that this picture might be have been taken in Puerto Rico though!
Nik (NJ)
There are many people in the streets causing traffic going to a business event or something. This is because there are groups of people wearing white suits and lanyards and holding up signs. The crowds of people are following those groups down the street.
ryan (nj)
People are gathered for a political event or on strike. They are protestiong against something
Jaclyn (Latham,NY)
I respectfully disagree with you Ryan. What makes you think that they are on a strike? If you are referring to the sign that says "piso" that means "floor" in Spanish. But I am open to hear why you think they are on a strike/protesting.
Shruthika (New Jersey)
The people are protesting for some cause, which is leading to a lot of traffic. I can tell that it is a protest, because some of the people are holding up posters and signs. Their signs say Piso on it, so maybe that is what they are protesting.
Dana (New Jersey)
I think that in this picture, some people are crowding over an event and some people are going to work or a boycotting area.
Kami (NJ)
I think a lot of people are joining together to help convey some sort of message to the public. Maybe something like a protest. The things I see that make me think that is that there is a lot of people and some are holding signs. I noticed that the people all look different. They look of different races.
Adi (NJ)
I think that there is a protest about a company because I see signs that people are holding. Plus in a protest there are a lot of people there. I also see a traffic jam because I see a lot of cars and I thought that people are mad so people got out of their car walked to work.
Sarah (NJ)
I think that the men and women are protesting against something. In the picture, I see many people rallying on a street holding up signs who are probably protesting against something. Also, the signs say Piso 5-4, which seems to be in Spanish, leading me to believe it is in a Spanish country. I can see that the men and women are wearing more appropriate clothing, in other words, business clothing.
Sahil (NJ)
What is going on in this picture? In the picture it looks like there are cars tring to get through a crowd of people. I think the people are trying to get to work and some people look like they might be working/advertising. It also looks like there are people protesting. What do you see that makes you say that? In the picture I can see a few cars and a bus trying to get through the crowd. I also see people wearing suit and dress shirts. Also there are people holding up signs. What more can you find? I can see tents and other booths in the background.
Ashna (NJ)
I think that there is an evacuation going on in a hotel or apartment. I believe this because there are signs that say “Piso 6-A”, "Piso 5-A", etc. In Spanish piso means floor. I also believe this because there is a lot of people.
Danielle (NJ)
It looks like the people are coming from the same work place. This is because everyone is wearing white and they are probably trying to get the rest of the people to boycott what the people in white are saying.
Jesse (Sms)
Maybe it's from Mexico and it's after the earthquakes and they are grouping together. They were in a tall building for work and they left while the earthquake ends. It is safer to be out of the building.
Noah P (Latham)
This is very possible, but the only thing that seems strange to me is that they do not seem very panicked and that many of them from about the bus to the very front of the picture, are all facing the same direction.
Elaine Gaynor (Latham, NY)
What visual clues point towards this taking place in Mexico? This could've taken place in any Spanish speaking country so what evidence in the picture narrows it down and points right to Mexico, in your opinion?
Don (sms)
What I think is going on in this picture is that the people are going to work on a busy day or coming from work to home. The clues/evidence I found was that it looks really busy or it could be from when the town ran out of gas to provide the whole town or state; everyone had to walk.
Tyler (Shaker High)
You maybe right but I don't think people would be holding signs up and look like they are rushing.
Blake (SMS)
In this picture people are moving downtown for a parade or maybe a riot. I'm not sure where this is, but I might say people are evacuating from possibly something dangerous that might happen in this city. The reason why I say this is people are roaming the streets.
Eva R (Redmond, WA)
In this picture, there seems to be a huge amount of events going in this picture. There are various different types of people; people who are dressing in professional attire, people who are wearing casual clothes, etc. Many of them are also wearing lanyards and there are signs that are in Spanish that could indicate that this is could be a conventions in a South American country. The signs says 'piso' with numbers and letters (2A, etc) and that means floor in Spanish so that could probably indicate that they are certain sections for specific things; for example, maybe showings or for groups. There are also some cars and buses that are in the middle of road but they are crowded with people so they cannot get through and they are stuck there. There are also white tents that could probably food or some activity tents.
krew (chaska)
This looks like an extreme evacuation.
megan (sms)
This picture looks like it is in New York CIty or Mexico because there are a lot of people there and not a lot of cars on the road. I think in this picture people are going to work becasue they are dressed up. I think they are having a party because there are people holding numbers up and people sitting on cars and holding unbrellas up in the back.
Margo (SMS)
In this picture it looks like there is some kind of party or event going on and the streets are filling up. There are people in orange and yellow jackets holding up numbers. I think the people got a group number and they have to watch for the people to walk over to them. The people in the road have a pass to get into the event around their neck.
Junior Class (Waterloo)
We think the picture is about an evacuation because there are many people hurdling forward. They all look scared. We think this is taking place in Central America, maybe Mexico. This may be related to the earthquake in Mexico. Maybe they are heading to a hotel for a safe place.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
I am wondering what you see that makes you say, "They all look scared"?
Meghan (SMS)
In this picture the people with the white shirts are protesting or just walking to where they need to go. They are in the way of the vehicles, so it is causing a backup or traffic jam. The green light is telling the people in the cars or buses to go but they can't because of the people who are protesting over something. It looks like most of them are business people by the white shirt's, the ties and the fancy dress pants they have on. The riot is located in Piso, Kentucky, I can tell, because of the sign the women is holding, it says Piso 5-A Reforme 355.
Dennis (NJ)
I think that there is someone important coming because the signs look like taxis or bus services for people. I think there is more than one person coming more like a whole company because the people are wearing uniforms with badges.
Savannah H. (SMS)
This picture looks like it is in New York City. Why? Because there are a lot of people wearing the same uniform. There is a lot of people who I think is trying to get on the bus. If the buses were full, the rest of the people would have to walk or find a taxi.
rowan (nj)
In this picture, it looks like there is a protest going on. I think this because I see signs being held up by people and it looks like people are yelling. Also there are a lot of people and they all look like they’re doing the same thing and wearing the same clothes.
Samantha (Nj)
I think this picture is an organized parade where the people holding the signs are trying to get everybody in order by using the word Peso 5-A or 8-B. Also, I think this is a parade for workers or it is a parade on the more formal side because most of them are wearing suits or dresses.
Ryan (New Jersey)
In this picture, I think that this is some sort of conference. I think this because the men are dressed in ties and it looks like there are tents/booths. Also, I found that the signs say floor numbers.
Jordana (NJ)
In the picture I think people are boycotting busses. I think this because there are a lot of people holding up signs and empty busses near them. It also looks like people are trying to walk to work but they don't want to take the bus.
Abdullah (NJ)
Whats going on in the picture is there is a bunch of people and cars that a crowded in a space. What i see that makes me say that is i see a lot of people and a few cars in one area of space.I can also find that there are street lighta and stands and some people are holding signs.
Kayla (NJ)
What i think that is going on in this picture is the people are assigned to different posts with letters and numbers on them. They are trying to find their posts but it's very crowded and chaos. I can see signs and people scattering to get somewhere. The signs say Piso and may mean something in a different language
Jamie (New Jersey)
I think that a business convention is occurring and people are trying to find the group that they belong in. I say this because everyone in the photo is dressed up and has a lanyard on so it looks like they all belong at a convention or meeting. Also, because there are signs up hinting that they might need to go to a meeting spot. We can find more information by looking closely to detail in the picture.
Caleen (NJ)
In the picture it looks very crowded and all of the people seem to want to be leaving their city. I see many people that look confused on what is going on and also many are people are crammed together and it looks like they are all trying to escape something. I also found that people are holding signs so maybe they are petitioning against something.
Joe (NJ)
Many people are going to one place that is called “Piso”. There are signs wrote “Piso” and many people and cars are going there. I found many different kinds of people and cars all going one way.
hailey bohmer (LSS)
i think that these people are rioting something but piso means floor in Spanish so maybe they are rioting about floors. or maybe their cars were stolen or destroyed and they are telling people where there cars were before they were destroyed.
Savannah (Canada )
this Picture is from Mexico City after the earthquake as you can see everybody gathering with people from their building or work, people got out of their cars to be on a safe zone as the Earthquake ends.
Jesse (Sms)
I agree with your opinion.
Ruben Taiaroa (LGMS)
this is going on in Medellin, Columbia I know this because there is a bus that says ruta on it ruta buses run in Medellin and the sings they are holding are written in spanish which they speak in Colombia
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
Protest or Strike Many of us agree that this event could be a protest of sorts, perhaps a strike from work or a drill either as preparation for an emergency or a response to one. @Ben and @Torin commented on the signs people are holding and @Carley Robson noted the seriousness of the people. @Joel R agrees that there is some controversy. However, @Brian and @Crystal observed a lack of intensity, noting some are rather casual, looking at their phone. @Jess also noted a lack of panic @Alexa commented this event could have been a response to natural disaster but if so, this particular area was not hard hit.
Eli (Canada)
the people are pore so they are going to a big cite
Don (sms)
The people are not poor they are stuck in traffic or they ran out of gas.
Amira T. (Canada)
This may be in Mexico because you don't see many blonds in there. They might be protesting, rioting, or just a plain old big gathering. There are people white shirts and black ties which might conclude to this being a big gathering/meeting.
Meghan (SMS)
I agree with the rioting, or protesting. They are getting in a big gathering as business people.
Akio Crouch (Ladysmith secondary school, ladysmith, BC, canada)
they are blocking the road, because as you can see the light is green but the cars are stuck. they also have fancy suits. but why???? seeing this picture makes me confused, this is my face L(0_0)L its a confused face
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
@Akio, your emogi reminded me that pictures can tell us so much all at once yet your words reveal specific questions you are thinking about. Why don't we see movement here and why are people so well dressed? What other questions are on our minds?
Marlon Harris (Canada bc)
I think that this is rush hour in a foreign country. My guess is that it is in india. I see signs in a different lan guage and i predicted that it was in India
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
There have a number of comments today suggesting rush hour in a densely populated city in another country, possibly in Mexico, South American or India however @Aran believes there would be more people in cars if it was rush hour. What do you see that makes you say rush hour?
Aran (British Colombia)
Some of the signs say "Piso" which is Spanish for Floor. So they are some where in South America. I would Assume this isn't Rush Hour because people would be in their Cars. But They are dressed very formally, so Maybe It is a Strike. Or My Other Guess is an Earthquake In probably, Mexico. Because Mexico has recently had an earthquake, and that would me why the signs are in Spanish.
stephanie gomez (chaska high school)
A lot of busy people.
Angel Estrada (Minnesota )
Most of the people look Hispanic. Most of the people look like they have name tags on them. They are holding on to signs where there were located. They probably all had to run out after the earthquake and they are trying to see whos missing and who to look for.
Ethan McDonald (Chaska )
It looks like some type of protest. Everyone is wearing nice clothes which confuses me a little. The signs that say Piso means floor in english. It might be some type of business meeting.
Anahi (HTHS NC)
In the picture shown there is a lot happening. Thousands of people of what is seen as a Hispanic race are evacuating from the earthquake that has recently occurred in Mexico. I can infer this because they are holding up signs that say "piso" which means floor in Spanish. This could mean that the floor of that building has collapsed. I can also see tents set up and a traffic light in the center.
brandon (chaska)
maybe its just a very crowded area or even just a poor area because the only vehicle i see is busses
Owen (MN)
I think this may be a airport and maybe there is a big event going on for a couple of days and people are trying to get there. I think this because most of the time trying to leave an airport is pretty busy, and there are also cars and trains trying to leave. I also think the people with the signs are taxi drivers there to pick someone up.
Hamza (Chaska)
I think that there is a protest going on in spanish.
Brianna C. (SMS)
I disagree because the earthquake happened at the same time so I think they are evacuating from the earthquake. By the way i'm just being nice because my teacher told me to respond to somebodies. :)
William M. (Chaska )
I think that it is an earthquake evacuation at a large business. I think that because there is people with signs saying piso which means floors. They are telling the people from the business to go to person that is holding the sign that they work on.
Monarch F. (CHS)
I think that these people are evacuating from their workplace or are having a heading towards a huge business convention because they're mostly wearing professional clothing (suits, ties, and dresses), they're holding signs with numbers (group numbers? floor numbers?), and they're all trying to leave at once.
Lindsay (Chaska High School)
There are many people gathering in this picture, and they all look like they are dressed for work in business suits and such. I think they are trying to find other people that they work with. Maybe this was taken in the aftermath of the earthquake in Mexico because the signs say "piso" which means floor in Spanish, and they speak Spanish in Mexico. These people must be looking for people who were lost after the earthquake.
Mr. J's Homeroom (Los Angeles, CA)
My class has come with three possibilities. 1. It could be an earthquake in Mexico. We saw signs in Spanish that might have to do with rebuilding buildings. 2. It could also be a concert. There's a lot of traffic and people who look like they are trying to get somewhere. the signs may have something to do with the floors of the concert hall. 3. It could be a political protest. The signs may have something to do with saving a building or political reform. We also noticed that many people are looking forward toward the camera. We thought they might be looking at something in front of them on a stage or in a building.
mathias (Canada BC lady smith )
a road jam or a protest
gerson roche (chaska )
it looks like people are trying to leave the area and it looks really crowded or there is some sort of parade/celebration
Denis Chelan (Redmond)
I think this is a Catalonian demonstration in Spain. They've recently started trying to win their independence and protesting in the streets to spread awareness of their cause. I think this because the signs are in Spanish and current event wise there aren't really any other spanish speaking countries that would have demonstrations of this scale. It would be Puerto Rico but the setting of this protest doesn't seem to look like a hurricane ravaged country. I like to read the news and I've seen many articles that showed similar images of the situation in Spain. Also i have family that lives in Spain and they have described a similar picture.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
Thank you Denis for bringing in information from both your personal experience and interests. Sounds like you have considered multiple locations while looking at this picture. Based on recent news, you eliminated certain possibilities, like Puerto Rico, because you do not see evidence of a hurricane damage.
Mathias.seymour (Canada BC )
1. people protesting 2.people holding signs 3. cars
Hannah (bc )
There is a crowd of people who look like they're leaving from some sort of meeting or an event. All of the people in the picture are walking out into the roads and blocking cars in the road. the ethnicity of the people look to be middle eastern and some Caucasian.
Jonathan Wayne Ivey (HTHS, Rocky Point, NC,U.S.)
A lot of people are standing in what appears to be a very busy and crowded street. I see some cars, some trains, a traffic light, a white triangular tarp with poles sticking out from underneath it, probably a tarp, signs, and a crowded street full of people. The place is probably full of people going somewhere, like a festival or other special event. They could also be evacuating from somewhere due to a tragic event or protesting, due to the look on some of the people faces and the signs, plus an injured person. This probably takes place in a very busy intersection in a city, somewhere in Central or South America, or Spain or Portugal.
Caitlin aose (New Jersey)
I think it is an evacuation. It doesn't seem that they are going to a festival or a special event because most of the people there are in business wear. I couldn't see much evidence of why they would be evacuating but they don't seem to be protesting because it would be more rambunctious than this. A lot of the people look confused and the signs that the people are holding are saying certain floor numbers.
brendan maloney (lss high school)
all i can think of that it is probably something pretty nice because most people are wear a button up shirt and maybe a tie and they have badges around their neck
danya harris (ladysmith bc )
its a big indain family going to there work or going to a family dinner. i wonder why were aloud to walk right on the roads? but in the picture it looks like the have freedom
ansen petersen (ladysmith secondary school Canada )
is there an event going on or is this a normal day where they live why is the light green but the cars aren't moving why is there a bus when its faster to walk the bus isnt going no where
Joylyn (Canada)
I think the people with badges and signs are from a building that was in an earthquake because the signs say Piso 5-A or Piso 8-B and other numbers it means floor 5-A and floor 8-B. I also think that people are trying to get away from the earthquake zone and that is why the street is flooded with people.
Margo (SMS)
That is pretty much what i thought because they have like a badge around their neck
Cheyanne Harris (Ladysmith B.c.)
1. i think its a big business going on strike or maybe its just what India look's like on the daily cause some of them don't have cars. 2. cause they're wearing suits and have signs in the air
Ashten (SMS)
ya i think that it might be a business but i kind of think that the hurican erma or the other hercain might be coming
Michelle Wong (Chaska)
I think these people are going to a meeting since they are wearing badges, it could also be rush hour since you have people going one way or the other way, they could also be leaving the country if there are any problems and everyone has to leave.
Ana Sobrevilla (Chaska High School)
Looks like there is a protest going on about something. There is a bunch of people and they're holding up signs. The people are crowding the streets so it the protest must be something very important that everyone should know.
Irvan D. (Ancient Greece)
1. i think there are different schools that are coming together to do some sort of activity. 2. Because most of the people look like to be in uniforms and and it looks like some people have badges. 3. many people are in black or white.
ansen petersen (ladysmtih bc canada)
i think they are to old for school they might be in college or university
Mitchell (Minnesota)
I think that This might be a protest but I can't really tell. The reason I think this is a possibility is because the people have signs.
A'Va (HTHS)
There is a lot going on in this picture. The people appear to be Hispanic and they are holding up signs. Also, most of them are in business casual clothing. Maybe the people are in Mexico and are evacuating a building because of the recent earthquake. It looks to be at least 100 people standing outside with not too happy facial expressions. This picture just looks very chaotic.
Nathan Reig (HTHS)
There is an evacuation occuring in this picture and looking at the ethnicity of the people in the photo I'm guessing it may be from the earth quake that occured in Mexico a few weeks ago.
Claire (chaska)
I Think that people are evacuating a city or a building. The signs that are numbered I think could be for organizing people and where they need to go.
michael (hths)
There is a crowd of people who look like they're leaving from some sort of meeting or an event. All of the people in the picture are walking out into the roads and blocking cars in the road. the ethnicity of the people look to be middle eastern and some Caucasian.

It is exciting to see so many comments from so many places and many returning schools as well! Great to have you all join in the discussion. From the various ideas expressed, it is clear that news of current events impacts our viewpoints, i.e. natural disasters and where they are located, protests and the purpose of those events have been mentioned by many today. More people are taking the opportunity to reply to other participants. What more can we find?
Fabiola R (HTHS , NC)
What i see in this picture is that it seems as if they were protesting or at a public event. I think this because people are holding up signs and it seems as if there were a lot of people of the same race, maybe hispanics protesting for something . I also see that on the bus it has its sign "Ruta 2" , and in Spanish that how you spell route. I also see how they seem to be like a hispanic race because they have like a badge or a name tag as if they were from a group or a specific place. Or this could also be like an evacuation because they have signs tat say "Piso" as in "floor". Maybe they evacuated from a fire in the building or they are probably practicing to evacuate just in case one day something big happens and everybody can evacuate the building safe.
Adair (Rocky Point)
I think what is going on is the earthquake that happen in Mexico and this people are trying to help Mexico get back up. Also it could be a protest for Trump removing D.A.C.A and they are walking in the streets to show there protest.
Ja'Juan (Ms. Jeffcoat's Class)
In this picture I think that the people of a foreign country are evacuating from a job. A lot of people in the crowd are wearing similar clothes like a dress shirt and tie with a name tag. There are also vehicles in the crowd that look like they are being abandoned.
Chris Campos (Minnesota)
I think this is a Protest. I know there is a Protest in Spain so this might be that.
Alex Magnuson (Chaska)
I believe it is an evacuation of some sort
Jaime (Ms.Jeffcoat)
I think whats going on in the picture is people gathering up from the earthquake. I say this because there are many people that look stranded. I see booths in the back, there is some traffic, there are lots of people in white dress up cloths.
Julia B. (HTHS)
it looks like the people may be watching something. I noticed that some of the people are holding phones up like they are recording something. pretty much all the people are facing the same direction which further proves my theory. it also looks like the cars were at one point driving but ended up getting stopped by the crowd or maybe the owners of the cars parked in random places to see whats going on. I also saw that some of the people in the front are wearing badges.
Kialey N (HTHS )
I think the people in this picture are being evacuated from a building were they work. I think this because there holding up signs with different areas and or floors. Also the people are wearing badges and business clothes.
Katie Allen (Minnestoa )
It looks like a really busy place and people are trying to leave, and like people are holding up signs for people to get on the busses or in cars. Also people are on their phones looking up where they can go
Sam. L (Minnesota)
I think that this is rush hour in a foreign country. My guess is that it is in india. I see signs in a different language and i predicted that it was in India
Luke W. (No)
I think there is a protest of some sort in the streets, they might have decided to leave work and protest.
Akio Crouch (Ladysmith secondary school, ladysmith, BC, canada)
makes sense because they are in their fancy work suits, but W H O M S T are they working for????? L(0nO)L
HTHS (North Carolina )
There's a lot of people in a big city. Traffic is very heavy and it looks like there is little to no room to walk. There are people that are holding up signs of some sort. There's a little tent with some people dressed in white in the back. I see something covered in red in the back.
L.C.M (Ms.Jeffcoat class )
in the picture I seem to see a lot of people who seem to be gathering. No body seem to be happy, The people see to be from a Spanish speaking country. Which they could be from Mexico. This could be an earthquake evacuation drill. After hearing the earthquakes that had happen recently in Mexico they probably;y want to be better prepared next time.
Tiara (HTHS)
This picture shows an humongous amount of people standing in a street that have empty buses and cars. I noticed that most people are nicely dressed in white with black ties and it makes me feel as if they're all together in a business or something government wise. The people on the street look bored as if they're expecting someone or something big to happen. i'm guessing whatever it is, is interesting to a lot of people in the town that causes there to be tremendous traffic.
Cassie Herring (CHS)
On this picture people are getting in some sort of groups. I say this because some people or the leaders are holding up signs that are numbers of groups to maybe hear an announcement. I can find that it is taking a while because people are getting bored and being on their phones.
Taylor (HTHS Jeffcoat's Class)
In this picture, it looks like lots of people from a foreign city are going somewhere or doing something together. I say this because their faces look like they're either trying to get something done, or they're on a mission. I can also see the buses/trolleys & tents.
Emma (CHS)
I think some sort of business event is going on. I see a mob of people completely filling up the entire street wearing suits and ties and nicer clothes. I noticed some signs being held up and a white tent in the background. Also, some people have lanyards around their neck.
Tristan (CHS)
1. People are protesting 2. I see people holding signs 3. cars
Madison Roberts (Chaska High School)
I think this is a protest of some sort. Or a crowd of people that are seeing a speech
A.Farrior (Ms. Jeffcoat HTHS)
A vast majority of the people in this picture look Hispanic. Everyone is dressed in casual or business clothes. It looks very chaotic, like a significant event has caused the streets to be filled very quickly. But, then again it looks like they already knew it was going to happen. People are standing on cars to see what has occurred. Maybe the citizens were evacuated as apart of some procedure.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
You have presented the idea that this event looks chaotic and likely to have happened very quickly, a new idea in our discussion today. What do you see that makes you say the streets filled very quickly?
Noelle Slezak (Minnesota)
This picture shows a large crowd gathering for something, and they are all wearing pretty nice clothes, so maybe it's people going on strike from a job.
Lanie (HTHS)
Even though there is a lot of commotion in this picture, there isn't a lot going on. Most of the people are dressed very professional so maybe they're all coming from the same place. It looks very hectic, so maybe they're evacuating. I think this because the expressions on some of their faces. The cars/buses that are parked, are empty. This also proves my point of an evacuation.
Carley Robson (HTHS, North Carolina)
There seems to be some kind of protest of some sort going on. there is people as far as the eye can see. you can see the some people are holding up signs. The people dont look very happy. everyone in the picture is dressed in business type closthing. Some people that I can see have on name tags, passport holders or some sort of card holders around their neck.
Autumn Cromartie (North Carolina)
It apears that somewhere in a country that is not the U.S, there seems to be some type of protest. Some people are holding signs that say something in a differint language. Some people look angry, one women is holding up a sign higher up in the air and looks destressed. Alot of people are wearing business clothing. The road is flooded with many people, making this seem like a not normal situation.
Madi (ms.jeffe's class hths )
it looks like there is something wrong and maybe they all had to leave. becayse theres a lot of people so maybe thats whats happening or some big parade. maybe its just rush hour in a large city
AlishaF (North Carolina HTHS)
There is a lot going on in this picture. Looks like a huge traffic jam. People are holding up signs like they are trying to direct others.
Edgar (northcarolina)
i think they are having a giant convention and they are all spanish there is alot of brown and tons of sighns there aare alot of tents
Brayden (hths)
In this picture the streets are covered with people and they all look like they have a certain place to be. I say this because a lot of people have on white and have little name tags. It looks to me that they are going to the same place. If you look towards the back you can see tents, so maybe there is a festival going on at this time.
Ben (Heidi Trask High school )
People are crowding a fairly busy looking street (cars are still in the road). I believe it to be a protest because the people are holding up what appear to be Pickett signs. Most of the people are Hispanic and seem to be dressed for work.
Shane Smith (Heide Trask High School, NC)
I this picture a lot of people are gathered in a road which looks like it was pretty busy. There is a lot of people dressed in white with name tags, possibly office workers. They might be going on strike, or maybe there was an evacuation of the building they were working at. Also there is a tent in the background which means it may have been a parade of some sort. However the positioning of the red car supports that this happened suddenly since it is in the middle of a turn.
Joel R (Kirkland, WA)
In this picture, I can see that there are lots of people crowding around a street holding signs. Although the light is green, it doesn’t seem that any of the cars or buses will be moving anytime soon. There are also people wearing formal attire near the front of the picture, and most of them have lanyards. The signs say “Piso”, and other words on the buses also make me say that this is probably an area where most or all people speak Spanish. I think that there is a protest or something going on, and that this must be a highly controversial issue.
Alyssa G. (Texas)
I think there could be MANY reasons these people are doing this.... 1. People are wearing badges so maybe it could be a political meeting. 2. Evacuating a city or area because of a poison spreading or gas realated problems. 3.Rush hour
Brian (JMHS)
These people look like they are evacuating a large building in some spanish speaking country. The signs are floor numbers in spanish followed by a letter which i'm guessing is the section of that floor and all those people are gathering there so they know they have everyone and no one was left behind. Some of the people are wearing ties and ID tags further showing they are business people and they were probably evacuated from their office. People don't look very distraught or worried, one woman is even just casually looking down at her phone so this is probably a drill.
Joylyn (Canada)
I agree
Torin (JMHS)
I believe that this an evacuation in a spanish speaking country.I believe this due to the signs. Also it could be some type of protest
Alexa (JMHS)
Although this is a busy picture, there does not appear to be much going on. Right away, one can tell that there is a large crowd of professionally-dressed, nametag-bearing people all moving in one direction. This may clue us in on the situation occurring. Perhaps this mass of people is being evacuated from an office building. Another detail which supports this conclusion are the signs being held up in various areas of the crowd: 'Piso 5-A', 'Piso 6-A', 'Piso 8-B': all of which translate to certain floor levels pertaining to one building. The different designs of each sign (some are red, there is one that is blue) may show that not all of these individuals work for the same business, but do all work within the same office building. The random, misplaced cars within the crowd shows that this evacuation was unplanned/is not a drill, since the area would have been blocked off/closed down if there was an evacuation drill planned beforehand. Although there are a lot of people in this picture, there is a certain air of efficient organization to the mass, and none of the facial expressions upon the individuals' faces seem alarmed. This shows that if a natural disaster (such as an earthquake) occurred, there was not a lot of damage done to this area.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
You have noticed details that might indicate a complex level of organization for this event. You mentioned the different numbers and colors on the signs that could help direct people. At the same time, looking closely at the vehicles, and how they appear to have been caught off guard, there is a contrasting sense of spontaneity.
Jess (JMHS, NJ)
There's a lot going on in this photo. Based on the ethnicities of the people in this photo, as well as the language on the signs, I'd say that these people are Hispanic and from a Spanish speaking country. Some of the signs say 'piso', which means 'floor' in Spanish, and nearly all of the people present are dressed in business casual clothing with name tags, so perhaps this could be an office building evacuation, maybe in Mexico prior to the earthquake. Nobody in this photo looks happy, but nobody really looks panicked, so that's why I'd infer that it takes place prior to the earthquake as a drill instead of after. Besides, if it had taken place after the earthquake, the streets would likely be leveled to some degree, and everything would be in some level of disarray.
Vincent (JMHS)
This looks like a picture of an evacuation. One reason is because of the crowd of people in the streets. Next all the people are wearing ties and Id badges. This might be because all the people are being evacuated from their work buildings. Lastly it looks like it is taking place in India because of all the people and the ethnicity of the people.
Gurzeshan (Latham)
There seems to be a bustle of people on their morning commute, this could be how it is every morning for them. The city seems to lack organization and a clear road system to guide the citizens.
Naomi Fer (Sleepy Hollow,NY)
This looks like it might be a strike in a hispanic place since one of the posters that they are holding signs that say "piso" and that in spanish means "floor" in english. It is very crowded and people are holding phones and kind of have an angry face, so I assume that they are either on a strike and recording/taking photos so they can post; or they are just evacuating a building due to an incident.
Moriah B ;) (None of you buisness)
I think it is a political meeting in some country.Th people are dress all nice and so i think it is a press meeting or some sort of important person or people are showing there.I think......or maybe not.I might be wrong.
Crystal (JMHS)
In this picture their could've been a evacuation or even a drill in case of something serious and the signs in the picture say floor . So the people can know where they are going and everyone from that certain floor can stay together . Also they have on name tags which is probably from one single building with different businesses inside .
Shannon Clemons (Ranch Bernardo high school)
It looks like rush hour in a very populated city or maybe there is a march to event going on which led people to the streets.
Mr. Morgan's Class (Ohio)
We see that it is taking place in a Spanish speaking country because the signs say ¨floor" in Spanish. The group seems to be organized because people are dressed in formal clothes, a man is holding a megaphone, and people are holding up signs that say different floors. It may be a protest, evacuation, or gathering after a disaster.
david (little Rock)
It looks like the people in a Spanish speaking country are trying to evacuate the city. The roads are too crowded for a normal road and the people look like they all work in an office building because the men are wearing dress clothes.
