10 minute eps of Game of Thrones? This is just stupid. Almost everyone I know rarely watches tv on a device other than their TELEVISION SET when they have some time to relax.
Skam, the big hit show in Scandinavia this year, succeeded with this format. They updated the series with short, five-ten minute episodes everyday & you could follow the characters on instagram. Everyone was hooked!

Sooo... $2 billion to launch a short film festival.
Ten minutes is one-third of an infomercial, which is about as long as infomercials need to be. Ten minutes for a quality story? A current news story, maybe, but a nonfiction work, can't be.

I've never known anyone who was anything but irritated with the 10 minute 'webisode' format. When people run out of movies or shows they can get that times a million on YouTube for free.
He's right about this: Platform is king. That's why Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, and Hulu are killing regular television.
Katzenberg is too late to the party for this $2-billion to be anything but birdcage liner. At best he's describing a YouTube-wannabe.
One company is already taking on Katzenberg - trying to raise $3 billion to put him out of business:

We are taking a slightly different path with The InternetBroadcastNetwork.com. We have turned our suburban home into a 10 camera fully outfitted, automated and remotely operated audio/video/multimedia live production facility with 5 studios. https://imgur.com/a/jn5sJ Our goal is to take real people who have great authoritative relatable stories and tell it around the campfire (with Skype-in guests around their campfire), in a talk show studio, living room studio, video gaming area, kitchen and remote. We create 1.5 to 2 hour live unscripted broadcasts (divided into 20 minute segments and kept at full length and archived online) and will strip off the audio to create podcasts. We start our 360 VR "Behind the Scenes" (BTS) cameras rolling 2 hours ahead of time, through the production and an hour after for extra content to show what is going on in our real lives in the background. Total cost per 2 hour live and archived event is about $50.00 for pizza, chicken nuggets and beverages. Our "no politics, no religion" lineup for 2018-2019 includes Strategy Television and Strategy Television for Kids, HappyTelevision.com and STEAMManufactory.com (formerly STEM). A main goal is to create new personalities based on "Trust Value" and will accept limited advertising, but utilizing strategic product placement for products and services that we use to make our productions and lives happen. Example: Our children said that we NEED Nesquik as a sponsor, because they drink it all the time.

I'm skeptical. It never explains exactly what the $2 billion is going to be used for. Is there any evidence that higher cost productions attract more viewers? My favorite material is stand up comics for which the production cost if very close to zero. The production cost for the most popular sitcoms and soaps is also very low (excluding star salaries).
It will be interesting to see what happens, but I have to say I'm betting against this idea. It's not a lack of faith in Mr Katzenberg that gives me pause, or the reasoning of playing to where the eyeballs are to be found.
I just can't see why Mr K thinks his company will be better at generating interesting video, than the rest of the world uploading anything and everything to the current major outlets - facebook, youtube, twitter, etc.
I worked with JK at two different companies and the one thing I can definitely say is NEVER BET AGAINST this man. While he doesn't bat 1.000, his instincts are one of the best in the biz. Best of luck in your new venture. It will be fun to see how this comes about.

sounds like he is trying to set off a rush to fund his venture by pitting the desperate content brokers in the media industry against each other. if they don't fund this then sovereign wealth funds and/or pe firms will step in. what will be interesting is how the ad model shapes out and whether or not consumers buy in. I imagine it will be well-executed and catch on
Two weeks ago I cut my cable service for good. Way too many commercials and having to pay to watch that, seriously? I recall when you paid for premium channels and they were commercial FREE ! Now I'm streaming and saving $112. per month !

It WILL be foisted upon America and they WILL pay.
I know everyone has supposedly a short focus nowadays, but 10 minutes? I'm not feeling this idea, but Katzenberg will get his dough and some of the lemmings will join him.
Seems a bit implausible that people whom watch 1000's of hours of content for free would pony up $$ for 10 minute mini stories. The reason, or a big reason that television and movies are watched by so many is that it provides you with a story you can spend some time with. The short videos, youtube and the like, reality tv, none of it is quality content. I think he may be over thinking the value of "quality".

Ten minute snippets of high quality video may fit the goldfish-like attention span of millennials but I seriously doubt the most ardent reader of short stories would tolerate a narrative arc that mimics that of a cartoon or Breaking News. The ten
minutes might be better used for an in-depth appreciation of a poem, a film, an artist, or a moment in history. Otherwise, what you have is spun sugar thrown out of a high-velocity machine, flimsy substance that melts quickly and leaves nothing of value behind.

I, personally, would be completely uninterested in investing in any enterprise that contributes further to the dumbing-down and ADD of society.

Will it be another MySpace ?!
Premium content: Great! Few commercials? Fabulous! Ten minute videos? Uhh, no if that's all it is. People will end up watching it for free on you tube. The platform is not king, the content is. People don't watch GOT because it's on HBO, people watch GOT because it's GOT.

Content has never been king. Ask any of the writers working in entertainment.

It's a no-brainer, except for the point it's another active ingredient of no-brainers. Squirrel!

So.....you're saying I should hold off on that new big screen?
