Golf is different from most sports. Players are not trying to strike their opponent out or steal the ball and slam dunk in the other guy's face. Opponents are playing against the course. Yes, there are winners and losers, but it is the course that beats you. Why be angry with someone who played the course a little better?

Can't imagine Hogan hugging any competitor. Ever.

Young, white, rich, male. They are privileged. Ultimate boys club. Of course there's no angst. Why would there be? I imagine the dialogue between this elite group, "Congratulations to you on winning a million", "Congratulations to you on winning $1.5". Must be nice but it sure isn't inspiring to me.
Please, enough already with the 'millennials are (fill in the blank)'. Were Jack N and Arnold P not friends?

Never having to worry about putting food on your table sure helps. This was NOT true of previous generations of golfers. They had to win so they could support their families.

I live in a senior community. We are all very welcoming & supportive of one another. We give hugs when we meet. These young men are years ahead of their time. Congratulations!

Isn't that the way Arnie, Jack and others played the game? A fine example.
exactly - add in Gary Player, Tom Watson, Billy Casper, and others from that time. This isn't a new phenomenon.
Unfortunately MOST sports fans are like the people who criticized Gatlin because he defeated Bolt.
Roger Federer has also long been a symbol of a great athlete is doesn't hate his opponents.

Roger has no reason to hate his opponents. He destroys them all .

Thank you for honoring the parents. I've often said that Jordan's parents should write a book on parenting. It would be a bestseller. Ditto the Thomases.

What's really cool is the fact that so many different groups of these young guns work out, practice, and play together. The competition is there. But so is the support system. Like a brotherhood, they all share in one another's wins and losses. It's the kind of camaraderie that breeds success. Not just on and off the course in the world of golf, but most importantly, in life itself...
I feel sorry for Tiger Woods. He was alone at the top. And now alone at the bottom.

The problem with the PGA tour is way the distribute the money. If the cash prize only went to the top 3 finishers this fellowship would go away. The same thing about all professional sports but the PGA Tour is the worse that's why I don't watch any more.
I don't understand your comment. You act like there's something wrong with the way the PGA does it.

You don't play golf obviously. You are totally wrong.......Jack Arnie Player and Watson were rivals and close friends.

Worse tha tennis?
Great story, nice to see players congratulating the winner. Another positive story about the human race, like to see more of these stories.

It is hopeful to see young people believe in process learning as more important than being #1. This represents competition of a different kind. I wish every dad and mom and coach who push their children to fulfill their own lost dreams would read this story and rethink their motivations.

Thanks for a story that made me feel hopeful today!

PGA Tour’s millennials enjoy golf, want to win, but they there is no rivalries among the players, the way it used to be in the past. For them winning is the first thing, but not everything. Compared to the selfish politicians and the president these young players are great human beings, and that makes us hopeful for America.

As talented as these golfers are, I find them almost interchangeable. Bland. Not that it matters. ALL the golfers on tour are the best in the world, and all are capable of winning any tournament, even the majors.
Perfection can be boring.

Justin Thomas played superb golf all year. His 63 in the third round at the US Open was super, and his long woods from par 5 fairways all year were spectacular.
But Justin's quote about his parents tops the charts: “They treated me the same whether I shot 66 or 76. They are a huge reason — the reason — why I’m sitting up here right now.”
Congrats Justin - Well done!

While Crouse might be giving sensible advice to anyone interested in playing sports she seems to be forcing the exception as a model for the rule. Almost all world class athletes are driven by the will to win. That's what separates them from the rest. To suggest otherwise is disingenuous. Bravo to the few that might not reflect this pattern but they, in fact, are the few.

I would submit that Spieth, Thomas, et al. display plenty of "will to win." We're just not used to seeing that will to win manifesting itself in a joyful way.

As exciting as it was to watch Tiger win, back in the day, it is so refreshing to see these young golfers who want to win, but who still talk to each other, encourage each other and celebrate when one of them wins.

If he were 25 today his competitive situation would be dramatically different.....
This group of golfers will reinvigorate a mature sport. It is a joy to watch them play because there are so incredibly many championship caliber players on the circuit now. It is truly another golden age for the sport.

The picture with Spieth says it all. Both of these young men have the world before them. Hooray!

Who says that all millenials is all about themselves.
Their obsession with smart phones, selfies and faceless conacts through social media even when they are facing each other.
I hope parents take note of these golfers.
They are awesome in setting up a good example of good sportsmanship.
The pro tennis could learn a thing or two from these young guns.
