am very worried that this state of affairs - a communist behemoth suppressing dissent - may be a precursor to a Bernie Sanders-type filling America's leadership void and then utilizing the nation's 16-17 intelligence services to pursue 'perfect' socialism.
Was a big fan of the Patriot Act 1 & 2, then, but why do we have so many intelligence agencies/services today --- terrible, dangerous, disturbing and even absurd. ask Orwell? Best... PJS

I would be interested to see what an expert in self harm would say about those staples.
My inclination is to think Mr. Lam did that to himself.
A non-Christian would make 'crosses' that looked like Xs. A person familiar with Christian imagery who was facing Mr. Lam would probably put the crosspiece towards Mr. Lam's body. However, most of the staples make cruciforms that are cross-shaped from the POV of Mr. Lam - which means they were upside down crosses to the people who purportedly did this.
I also see several places where a single staple was driven in, but no crosspiece was attempted. It is common for self-harmers to make multiple attempts at harm before getting the effect they desire. That is what I think I see here.
I wouldn't put this past torture-minded security ghouls, but neither do I think the fact of the staples makes a case against PRC proponents or enforcers.
I would also hope that pro-democracy activists realize that fraud about their treatment will not benefit them in the long run.

Hong Kong has entered into an era of physical violence and political intimation. One country two systems is fast dying. More middle class people are planning to emigrate.
2
Deng XiaoPing proposed a policy called "one country, two systems" in order to gain HongKong' return. In this case, I have to sadly and Truly believe that this policy is a JOKE. Conversely, HongKong is dramatically and rapidly being eroding by Community Party. I am so sad.
1
I did not believe in one country two systems. I am not disappointed. China is losing trust by the whole world. That is a price China will pay for its treatment of Hong Kong.
3
It is really sad to see my home town Hong Kong deteriorating so fast by the violent suppression of personal freedom in Hong Kong. The Beijing government used to use local triads to silence oppositions. In the past few years, they have send their national security personnel to kidnap and threaten oppositions. WESTERN TOURISTS ARE NOT SAFE IN HONG KONG. A few tourists were attacked by pro-communist thugs just a few weeks ago. I suggest the West to BOYCOTT THE HONG KONG because the HK government is in collusion with the Beijing government to erode our freedom. PLEASE BOYCOTT HK.

Anybody who buys Chinese-made products supports this horrific terrorism against individuals. We should be investing in America with the goal of having our corporations manufacture more things we use, rather than pay the Chinese to sell us their garbage that breaks quickly. Make a personal vow to try to avoid purchasing Chinese-made products. The seemingly gentle smirk that Chinese president Xi wears is phony. He stands for corruption and terrorism of its own kind.

Most of this Chinese made stuff is junk. You can't find an appliance any more where the cheapest part doesn't stop working. I have thrown so many toasters and toaster ovens away because the timers die with a year. Two years ago I bought a rather expensive toaster oven ( we use it a lot with just two of us) and the timer is going. Replacement can be done by the consumer able to follow directions if you can get the timer. They have been back ordered for months. What that means is that the failure rate has been high and the buyer (Breville) has to negotiate price and production to get parts to us. The only option to us is to order the part and wait for the day the timer comes in whenever that may be if at all. To get on the back order list you have to prepay.
Manufacturers even American ones have no concern for the consumer it's pure bottom line commerce. Nor do they seem to have concern for their reputation.

At one point or another, we are going to have to come to term with international cooperation as a modus operandi. This will necessitate that we do not start saber-rattling as a first diplomatic step. I am referring to China here.
The softer approach will take a lot of time to work but it cannot be continually upset with tantrums. It demands firmness on principles over years.
Taking a longer view would help because climate change and pursuits for a renewable storable energy eldorado (such as, potentially, power plants in space or other approaches) are going to necessitate scientific and moral cooperation.
Starting with students going to universities in different countries as well as associating America's name with consistent help is on the way rather that fire and fury would be a natural and worthwhile step.
Everything in our past points to this way, with clans aggregating to fiefdoms, cities, provinces, countries, united countries, unions of countries, continental unions and eventually one relatively unified planet.

This is just a TINY part of what the Tibetans have to endure every single day.

Does NY time has any evidences regarding this incident except his own accounts? If this crime did happen, did it committed by the Chinese agents or by supporters of Lionel Messi? Who have the motivations to silence him? by the way the story sounds a bit fishy, felt like directed by a amateur spy movie director.
1
It seems likely that a person from a country with an authoritarian would mention a conspiracy theory as his/her first comment about this story.
3
@Stevewts, your comment probably reads a lot better in the original Chinese.

@stevewts
A few questions for you:
1)Why would Messi's supporters attack someone who is also a fan? Are you serious?
This is like someone who loves Xi JinPing attacking another Xi supporter. Make sense now?
2)"Who has the motivations to silence" Mr. Lam? - the same government that doesn't allow dissent and disallowed 4 opposition party members from joining the Hong Kong Assembly a month ago.
Anyway, enjoy your .50 from the CCP.

China is the world's new bully except that it has no moral compass unlike the US. The Chinese will go to lengths to prove their might. This incident is just the beginning the world will soon witness their belligerence in many areas where they feel they can punch their way through with money. What their leadership forgets that there is divine justice and that the country will pay a heavy price by a natural calamity for the transgression of their atheist leaders. These arrogant leaders perhaps do not understand Every gas balloon has to come down one. day.
17
I hope Mr. Lam continues to both have the courage to stand up for honesty and decency, and also continues to try to remain open for dialogue with the ones who abducted him. Hong Kong's problems will be solved sooner by civil common sense dialogue with mutual respect, than by tactics of fear and intimidation, as with us all.
13
unless they are crushed, then China's problems go away until the next person becomes a problem. It is the modus operandi the Chinese have suffered under for over a 1000 years.
3
Considering the cross pattern, maybe the agents thought they were crucifying him with tiny nails. There's much to be read into anything if one really tries. May I suggest a staple remover? If the point of any Activist is to create activity, then Mr. Lam has succeeded.
For now, the velvet glove barely hides the iron fist in order that other potential activists may know what will happen to them if they object in any meaningful way. The United States is facing two adversaries in the region, China and North Korea. But, the Chinese leadership are not nearly so inscrutable as they would want the people of the United States to believe.
The Chinese leadership want to claim the international waters to the south of China for their nascent empire to which they are supposedly culturally entitled; the leadership want to maintain the huge annual trade imbalance with the United States as the means to obscenely enrich a few Chinese insiders, give the illusion of a bright future for a growing middle class, and keep the masses of its people and the middle class satisfied and obedient; and, finally, the leadership surreptitiously supports North Korea in its nuclear weapons goal as deterrence leverage against the United States government to interfere significantly in its first two goals.
The real means to address all of these problems is with monstrous trade sanctions against China. The pent-up fury of the Chinese and Korean masses against government brutality and injustice will bring the downfall of both the Chinese and Korean governments. Kim Jong-un is exactly like the Wicked Witch of the West - throw a little water on her and her evil will melt away - and his millions of obedient followers held in individual mortal fear will triumph in his death.

This is the insanity totalitarianism operates on. Hong Kong was a golden goose, and the fools with their stupidity will kill it. We certainly see every good thing in our own country disappearing. Perhaps it is time for the narcissists who run the world to bring about the logical conclusion-- a nuclear temper tantrum between giant babies put into power by boundless greed.
13
It is sad to see a prosperous city built by generations of hard working people being ruined by a parent govt that has no regard for human rights and the rule of law.
32
Those who think that authoritarianism is a good idea might want to think again. People with unchecked power will go to any lengths to keep it because power is addictive. That's why democracy, as messy as it is, is much preferable.
47
As the saying goes: Democracy is the worst form of government imaginable, except for every other kind.
5
No one expects the Chinese Communist Party...
Viva Hong Kong democrats.

This is the country and system which American consumers support everyday with our purchases of their exports!
Let's hear it for us!
Let's hear it for us!

This torture brought to you by Apple Corporation and the new I Phone.
America's tech "visionaries" are ALL allied to Chairman Xi, the dictator who runs the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.
In fact, Trump has no answers to any problem. Like Scaramucci, Trump is all bluster with no intelligence or knowledge.
But both Democrats like the Clintons and Republicans have sold the U.S. out to Communist China.

Consumers worldwide purchase their exports. Nice to see your anti-American college professors were successful in indoctrinating you.

McArthur was right. We could have eliminated this world problem before it had nuclear weapons. Truman sold us out.
