I watch with interest ever year at these HOF induction speeches - many of them are truly touching and illuminating. Claire Smith's speech topped them all this weekend - gave me chills.

Congratulations to Claire Smith - she truly deserves this honor. I read every column she wrote for the Philadelphia Inquirer, and was heartbroken when she left. Her writing is amazing!
E. Reader (Pennsylvania)
Claire was always a great colleague who exhibited strength, intelligence and dignity. She knew exactly what she wanted and then she went out and did it. Congrats to a very deserving woman.

I have folllowed baseball my whole life, I'm 56. Never heard of Claire Smith. First Hall of Fame inductee (including negro league players) I had never heard of before.

So proud of you, Claire!

Red Smith was named Smith as well. Did he ever win the award?

Hey JohnD,

Thanks for writing. Red Smith won the Spink Award in 1976. <a href="http://baseballhall.org/discover/awards/j-g-taylor-spink#1970---79">Here's the complete list.

Cheers,

Hearty congrats to Ms Smith! Had not heard of her. As a Dodger fan since their move here, and in following Steve Garvey's career, it always struck me he was a class act. Thanks for the piece.
Lisa Murphy (Orcas Island)

You are an inspiration.

Reading this, I feel small, having worked in the same newsroom as Claire and being unable to recognize the full power and force of her being. She was so quiet, so reserve, so kind. I couldn't penetrate this noble aspect of her and see the incredible persistence and resolve.
Pat Summers (<br/>)
so happy to read about this woman, her humble excellence and her recognition.
F Bragg (California)
Thank you, Claire Smith, for pursuing your craft without fear.
Gina D (Sacramento)
Shine the light love. Thank you.
steven schneck (staten island)
I heard her speak before. She also said that Garvey did more for her than anyone else in sports. Sometimes it takes just one person to open up a door that thousands will enter

Now a couple of NYT sport columnist Smiths who are worthy J G Taylor Spink BBHOFers. Both very good anglers too.
