Just another dumb , well you know.....

What a "Dream" Ticket, Maxine Waters and Kamela Harris running as a ticket for 2020. I say dream because it would be a dream for Republicans.
Whereas Ms. Harris is rude and belligerent by nature and not as smart as she likes to believe Ms. Waters is definitely dumb like a rock while displaying the same "pleasant" personality traits of Ms. Harris.
Put these two on a poster for Affirmative Action and you would see quotas eliminated immediately for the sake of the nation.

More Maxines, more Bernies. Make America great for once!
20
Ms. Waters is a national treasure who works for everyone. Trump will go down in history as the man who gave up our country's leadership of the free world. Look at how irrelevant he is at the G20. No one wants any part of him.
60
"Ms. Waters, once deemed “one of the most corrupt members of Congress” by a liberal watchdog group, has remade herself from Los Angeles ward politician to a darling of the left."
Which "left?" Attacking Trump is easy. Where Waters stands on economic policies is the real measure of her sincerity. Is she just another establishment neo-liberal using Trump's idiocy and identity politics to divert attention from the real issues? Getting praised by the NY Times is already a sign that her stands on economic issues are not good. I hope I am wrong.
A more helpful article would tell us where she stands on: the minimum wage – a little hike now or 15%, on the banks – sound tough on them or break them up, private healthcare for all or Medicare for all , tuition relief or tuition-free public colleges, and so on. Are we just being sold the same old bill of goods in a new package?

She calls polticians out. In the age of Donald Trump. And that is SHOWBOATING? If that's the definition, more showboating, please.
63
Booker's right: "less poll-tested, less consultant advised." All politicians, across the board. (And, unlike me, they should use complete sentences.). The rebellion against politics isn't just by the struggling jobless and underpaid, but by all of us who realize that elections have become managed, bought, administered, exercises in mere stagecraft.
21
At 78 Maxine Waters is energetic, articulate and still fighting for the average man and woman. Unlike Trump in all those categories!
30
"Democrats need to be less poll driven." Amen.
Authenticity and a pithy platform that rings loud and clear about what dems stand for as well as against is essential to unseating the party that seems to support the systematic destruction of the United States and its standing on the world stage.

I hate to see politicians lower themselves to name-calling. Trump is no doubt the all-time winner in this category, but Democrats and others opposing him would do themselves and the country a favor by confronting him in a professional manner. Reminds me of my grade school days of kids on the playground. To me, it's a sign of disengenuousness and an inability to articulate a coherent argument.
16
Ms.Waters has been accused of grandstanding and showboating? How perfect.Keep it up.Someone has to give it to trump and it seems she's the right one for the job.Trump was impeachable BEFORE taking the oath of office for not releasing his tax returns and everyday since has proved himself to be totally unfit for office. How long is this horrid man going to smear the country I love?I feel I'm living in a nightmare compounded daily by the craven GOP.
45
Democrats need far more Maxine Waters and far fewer Mark Penns.
56
Auntie Maxine. Yes, please.
46
GET A GRIP PEOPLE -- Maxine Waters was cleared of any corruption charges after an extensive investigation. Look it up and clean up your sloppy out-of-date comments. As for her EXPENSIVE home, did it ever occur to any of you that she is married and has financial means beyond her own salary.
47
Go Maxine! You really have to wonder why it's OK for a nut case of a white guy, AKA Donald Trump and some of his Republicans side kicks to talk out of line "guy talk" "locker room talk" but not a well seasoned black female politician. We don't have to think too hard about that now do we?
66
I find Maxine to be very Blakeian:
"Bring me my Bow of burning gold:
Bring me my arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England's green and pleasant Land."

Maxine, you alright with me. Trump ain't no good.
43
Maxine Waters...a perfect gadfly for the misogynistic and bigoted Trump.
42
Disappointing article. The facts are insufficient to allow any reader to form a judgement either for or against the person supposedly covered. Where are the subject's statements, speeches, local accomplishments or legislative dossier for us to examine?
There is nothing short of a visceral sound bite to support the article's titular assertion. Sorry, NYT.-- I guess I'll have to dig out those facts by myself from the congressional record and local newspaper archives [hint] before forming my own evaluation of her potential for action.
D- (for content, structure and purpose.)
Very disappointing. You can, and must, do better.

NML - This wasn't supposed to be an entire biography so what you seek is still easiest enough to find he you would take the time. For Pete's sake this wasn't a book!
14
Ms. Waters defines the word "hater."
20
I love people
1
Waters is the interest paid on the degradation of others by Trump. A gift that keeps on giving.
9
It is sad, to put it mildly, that Ms. Waters' "truth" is conveniently "forgotten" by "us" Democrats who know better what's behind all the grandstanding and forceful, blunt, indeed necessary words that Ms. Waters is able to communicate to the nation.
I admire Ms. Waters greatly. She speaks with great honesty, if slightly overblown sometimes.
Alas, she is able to do so because her constituency is solidly on her side, quite unequivocally, election after election. That is not the case with so many of our politicians. They stand to lose at any moment according to how much "truth" they speak.
In that, Ms. Waters' words can sometimes seem to come across as hollow---------when you have it reassured that you will not be fired, you can say whatever you want. There is no other way to see it, "Auntie Maxine". What would you do without such solidity and certainty?
Can we try and wonder? Please do not call me a cynic.
THANK YOU.

What a spectacle at just how fast the so-called “successful businessman” in the oval office is proving unfit for the job, and how spineless and feckless a group of cowards McConnell, Ryan and the rest of the GOP are in coming to terms with this reality. It’s a shameful national embarrassment now on full display for all the world to see.
32
Maxine is right on the mark and every member of Congress should be listening.
What's more is we have an arrogant fake President holding two closed door meetings with our adversaries. This is on top of secret meetings held before the 2016 election. You can add this corrupt regime's financial ties to Russian holdings and there is no doubt the evidence leads to collusion.
This is an illegal takeover of our democracy and anyone supporting it is either a fool or guilty of treason.

Maxine Waters is a role model for women. She stands up for what she believes in and is not afraid to be outspoken. She does not look for approval or validation of her viewpoints yet she readily finds them. She does not allow herself to be subjugated, subordinated nor bullied. Perhaps that is why some may not like her. She is a strong capable woman and men will not keep her down. I'm proud to have this woman in congress. She's a role model for me.
32
how come no mention of the fact that she doesn't live in her district, in a $4 million house? government has been very very good to her.
12
And she has been very good to government. .. thank god she is able to support herself and still speak out against the unethical trumps. In fact, give her a raise !
12
The vitriolic rhetoric and disgusting statements that come out of the Republican Party and Donald Trump can only be met with the firebrand style of Ms. Waters. She along with Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and others are the front line against what the Republican Party policies will do to the country and I will support them in any way possible. These women are the true Americans here, not the wrap yourselves in the flag and scream "freedom" conservatives that have been selling their snake oil for decades now, undermining the poor and middle class so their friends can further enrich themselves. At 63 years of age I've done well for myself and contribute to all of these woman. I'll continue to do so as long as they keep on applying pressure on the Republican lie machine. You Ladies keep it up. Your country needs you.
38
This level of personal nastiness and viciousness are far below the dignity of both the office of the President when it comes from him as they are below the dignity of Congress when the venom issues from Ms. Waters lips. Neither side has any shame, and that is the shame for our country and our democracy. Is it a battle of the rabbles?
11
It seems to me Waters is part of the problem...one of the Washington swamp-creatures who doesn't know when it's time to return to the deep.
9
And who is the other part of the problem? With which words used to describe Trump do you take umbrage ..."a bully, an egotistical maniac, a liar "? We all know and have seen several examples to justify those adjectives. Nor does she use the incendiary "lock him up" chant at every opportunity. Nor would she go to a G 20 meeting and voice her contempt. She has a long, long way to go before she meets mr. trump in the swamp.
2
@ralphie
re "she makes me want to cover my head in shame. "
So called president trump and his endless in your face bloviating sententious bombast makes me physically sick... quite literally.

James Brown would be proud to have her representation in Congress.
4
Maxine Waters is the type of person who speaks her mind and does not cow tow to special interests.
8
Well I'd rather have than not have her ... and she voted and spoke out against the Iraq War. So she's alright in my book.

13
Maxine Waters reminds me of your odd friend who wants to go to Roswell NM to see the aliens. She lives in alternative world, and after Nancy Pelosi is the best thing going for the GOP. Keep it up Auntie, Trump needs you.
10
No one can hold a candle to POTUS & family/cabinet/aides' ethical conflicts, so to suddenly hold Maxine Waters to a higher level doesn't wash.
Auntie Maxine has been around the block a few times & seen many DTs.
She's speaking truth directly to the Bully in Chief when the GOP is being servile to and manipulative of him. Cucks, I read they're called.
I don't care if she has skeletons in her closet, she knows how to deal with his kind & not feign collegiality. Thank you Auntie Maxine.
Meanwhile Dem Party needs to get its act together, being as spokesperson is doing a bang-up job.

The wiki definition of corruption is a form of dishonest or unethical conduct by a person entrusted with a position of authority, often to acquire personal benefit...Government, or 'political', corruption occurs when an office-holder or other governmental employee acts in an official capacity for personal gain.... [political] corruption is the illegitimate use of public power to benefit a private interest.
It's ironic discussion about Rep. Maxine Waters' ethics and corruption, which can't compare to President Trump, since pursuant to the above definitions, he is corrupt since he has advantaged himself financially, whenever possible, ahead of the American government and the citizens of the US. From his hotels and golf clubs, to the failure to fully show his taxes which he feels is not the public's business.
Yet President Trump's "Fraudulent Voting Commission" is demanding our personal information. Even his Vice Chairman thereof is not volunteering his info which he could voluntarily do so to set an example, using the guise that his state Kansas, precludes allegedly disclosure of same,
President Trump, set an example for us, we'll show you ours, after you show us yours. If you don't have to, we shouldn't either!

17
Trump wether you agree with him or not is a boorish and so is Ms. Waters.
11
I see reputable articles that report that after a three-year ethics investigation, Maxine Waters was cleared of any charges of corruption. Ohhhh, that is the follow-up that the Foxites failed to bring to light.
28
If you think a politician could be embarrassing -- try on Maxine.... she makes me want to cover my head in shame.
17
It’s odd that you would come out for impeachment like right at the gate,” he said. “The guy takes his hand off the Bible and it’s like, ‘Impeach him.’
Well, the reason for this is that, not surprisingly, Trump did not recuse himself, and his party cronies gave no inkling of them trying to reign Trump in.

9
You go Maxine! Our mantra is obstruction of justice, conflicts of interest and emoluments violations. Wurst President in history.
23
Whoops, I was wrong. She was NOT a member of the group The Waters.
Nevermind.
Nevermind.
Given what a corrupt, despicable hack waters is, I would consider it a trophy and a sign I'm doing the right thing if she were to attack me.
She is an abomination.
She is an abomination.
18
I am bemused by this article profiling Maxine Waters. The caption beneath title describes Waters as having a "barbed tongue." Donald Trump has insulted everyone from a disabled journalist to the Pope himself, but I don't believe he has ever been described as having a "barbed tongue." As an example of her "barbed tongue," Waters described Trump as a "disgusting, poor excuse" for a man."
In turn, in this article, she has been called by Trump's defenders as "Crazy Maxie," "Dirty Waters," and "wearing a James Brown wig." Seems to me Waters is pretty mild in comparison to some of those Trump defenders.
Seems to me there is again a double standard at work here. Trump goes as far as to snub American POW's by saying "he likes people who weren't captured," allegedly patriotic conservative America just shrugged. But when Hillary said some Trump supporters (who include luminaries like former KKK grand wizard David Duke) were "deplorable," the reaction was "How dare you!"

It's called the double standard -- as in sexism.
11
Keep up up the good work. Keep on calling him out.

I like this woman.
Anyone who goes to a rap concert at 78 and hangs out with Chance the rapper and appreciates young people instead of laughing at them and their choices, has got my respect.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters is one of my favorite Politicians. It is always good to hear what she has to say about the current Administration. I don't agree with the people criticizing her. Compared to Donald Trump or Paul Ryan she is Mother Teresa.
21
wasn;t she also one of the only ones to vote against the endless middle east wars and the patriot act?
i think she voted against both wars-
mention that if it' true
also, why are all the ones in the democratic party who are worth anything over 70 - aren't there any terrific 35 or 45 or even 55 year olds?

As explained in earlier comments, Barbara Lee was the lone vote against war authoritization in 2001. Waters was among 156 votes against the Iraq war in 2002.
2
Thank you Auntie Maxine, I have waited over a year to Hear a rational intelligent Individual step up and call Trump and his minions out for what they are.
I applaud you and hope you are the start of a democrat movement to keep facts, science, ethics and the dignity of the highest elected office alive.
Propose methods to drain the swamp. Change the system

22
She was also a member of the famous WATERS group of background singers. Making hits for decades.
2
We certainly applaud Congresswoman Waters distain of this know-nothing PRESIDENT. Unfortunately, she exemplifies what is wrong with the Democratic party. Wages for the average American worker have stagnated since she has been in office, and her work on the House finance committee has assured that no one has been held responsible for the financial crisis which left many households decimated.
6
I believe low wages are just a small part of the problem. The really big part of the problem is the rents one must pay to have shelter. A better idea, I believe, is to remove all of the buildings in a particular area and erect large tents in which hundreds of people can sleep in at night at little or no cost. The flooring in the tents would be carpeted wood floors and no one would be able to reserve or claim exclusivity to the use of any section of the flooring.
1
I really do believe that cooler heads and more diplomatic approaches win in the long run. However, I'll stop and stare and admire Maxine Waters as she panders to me and my fellow outraged progressives every time she speaks. We need her to keep on doing what she does so well....being a voice for truth to power. Forgive my ageist assumptions, but I was amazed to read that this powerhouse of outrage is 78 years young. Thank you Congresswoman Maxine Waters.
16
Good for Maxine. But merely trashing Trump, deserved as it is, won't work anymore with those it needs to work with. Democrats need a clear alternative to convince Trump voters that all the reasons they voted for him will actually be accomplished by progressives.
14
I agree that President Trump is a bully and always has been. The way to manage a bully is to stand up to him and the Congresswoman is doing that. On the other hand the Democratic Party has itself to blame for his election because they nominated Hilary Clinton. Almost any other reasonable candidate could have beaten him. They could not understand what severely damaged goods she is. The Democrats need to be railing at themselves just as much as they rail at the President.
8
Ugh, enough!
Clinton was an exceptional candidate.
Putin hates her because she did not back down to pressure.
He installed Trump, who is happy to grant his every wish.

6
About a dozen years ago, the Democratic National Committee invented the superdelegate system that allowed Hillary to win over Sanders in this election. It's called fixing the vote. In addition, our outrageous electoral system was responsible for electing a president who won nearly 3 million less votes than Hillary Clinton. It's time to fix the voting system, along with jerrymandered districts the Republicans have been allowed to fashion, and return to the one person, one vote system. Until then and where voting is concerned, we do not have a democracy.
5
Congresswoman Waters has many liabilities which the Democrats should be aware of. They will continue to veer towards political suicide if she is taken as a model.
She is notably corrupt, self-righteous, arrogant and egotistical. She is a classic lazy grandstanding party hack, part of the LA Democratic machine, and has succeeded in doing almost nothing constructive for her district.
She comes from the 70s hard-left Movement, as does her formerly pro-Soviet colleague, Barbara Lee. This is not a good thing.
Unlike Hillary Clinton, Ms. Waters is about as far as you can get from being a constructive, rational politician. Simply saying "the other side is worse!", will get you nowhere with centrist independents. If the Democrats follow her example, it will be like lemmings marching off the cliff.

29
Not quite true! How soon we forget Donald Trump got very far with centrist independents, et al, using "the other side is worse!"
9
Actually, bmck, Trump appealed to centrist independents with a far larger programme than that, one that actually spoke to them. He won them over. Waters is preaching to the choir, which is only the far left of the Democrats. That may feel good, but it is not a viable tactic.
6
I like Maxine Waters, and I agree with most of her views. I admire her for taking on Donald Trump. On the other hand, I point out that she is 78 years old, and that she is part of the gerontocracy that rules our lives. I am sick and tired of being governed by old people, who abuse the advantages of incumbency and stay in Congress seemingly forever. I detest the seniority system in Congress, and I am tired of being governed by a bunch of septuagenarians and octogenarians. These old people are clogging the pipeline, and are blocking people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s from getting their shot. I love Rep. Waters, but I think that turnover is beneficial in all organizations. I support term limits for Representatives and Senators.
56
I've been telling this to several people lately. The baby boomers and the politicians just a little older than that are not thinking of a succession plan that is needed in every organization. We, in our 40's, have generally missed that window of opportunity to lead in government. And so we will be led by the generation behind us, who will be very resentful (for very good reasons) and we will not be represented well.
It scares me that technology legislation is being voted on by people (Lindsay Graham, McCain, others) who have little understanding of what it really means.
Clinton was selfish in running in 2016. She could have been very memorable and helpful if she'd started her PAC after leaving the State Department.

Age has nothing to do with ability, productiveness, and usefulness. There are valuable, contributing people who are old and those young who are mean-spirited and not so useful. Character, substance, and ability are found in people of all ages. People do not cease being useful because they are older, but because they are who they are, which is most likely the person they were when younger. Ageism amazes because it is the only "ism" that will apply to everyone. Do you not plan on aging? I am quite sure that Maxine Waters is who she is not because of her age, but because of other factors which were present 25 years ago when she first assumed office.
Promoting ageism should have no place in this comment section. Each age cohort brings something of value to the plate. When we decide that one segment of society isn't as good as the next, we move backwards. Devaluing older people devalues everyone. The younger members of Congress have been just as disrespectful and off-the-charts crazy and any of the older members. I can think of quite a few I would like to see gone. However, I'm quite sure it has to do with their political views and character, and not their age. If you had substituted the word "race" for "age, the Times would not have printed your comments. It's time they monitor ageist comments by the same standard.

You'll get your turn at being one of the "old people" -hopefully- the view tends to look different on the other end.

No, it isn't odd -- not if you were paying any attention at all during the campaign, it isn't.

The NYTimes has a long way to go when writing about strong women. The language you chose would not have been used when writing about strong men.
38
Absolutely on-point comment.
I've never heard any male public personality being called by NYT for their "barbed" tongue.
This type of language by such a well-regarded organization is unacceptable.

2
If she is the face of the New Democrats, we Democrats are doomed. She is an idiot.
44
Give them hell Ms. Waters - Impeach 45 !
40
Why should Maxine Waters be held higher code of ethics than the POTUS? She has more balls than her male peers in both parties.I love how everyone is overlooking the most corrupt, inept, lying, obnoxious, conniving, sexist in US history.
88
I don't think you're asking the right question. It's not why she should be held to a HIGHER code of ethics. We should be asking the question why the POTUS is being held to a LOWER one.
8
She should have been removed from Congress years ago when she joined the mob shouting 'no justice, no peace' during the Rodney King riots, making a mockery of her oath to our laws and Constitution.
31
Actually, Maxine Waters gave eloquent speeches and explanations in that period. And what was inflicted on Rodney King by police was a complete and utter disgrace to the society.
70
And importantly the police's (punc?) to uphold the law and the constitution
1
Donald Trump got to where he is by lying and denigrating others. Maxine Waters isn't having any of it. Among the other milquetoast politicians in Washington, her voice is loud and clear.
80
Maxine is like a shout out along with Naomi Klein's "NO".
Keep at work Maxine.
Keep at work Maxine.
19
Atta girl,Maxine! Keep on speaking up for all of us. I regret that my mobility is compromised or I'd join you on the stump. RESIST and VOTE!
29
Maxine Waters? This is the kind of misguided adoration that makes my spouse disappointed in me for reading the NYT.
33
And yet, I admire Congresswoman Waters greatly -- especially for her clarity on Trump. She has said that Trump does not deserve to represent us to the world -- I agree -- and wish more people in Congress would say exactly that.
40
The Republicans in congress have their own agenda--and as long as Donald is willing to deflect from their destruction, it all works out just fine. The moment he's done doing their bidding, he'll be thrown under the next limo.
7
GWB started an illegal war that killed 500 000 and counting. Trump has to start WW 3 to be worse. He just looks worse, is all.

Watch it Australia! I live on the West Coast where little Kim's trial and err nuclear bombs might just end up Half exploded, in my lush redwood forests, spoiling it for… well like, ME for one.
Anyway kerosene Maxine is kind of local to California politics – but thanks!

1
Andrew, Bush Jr.'s was quite possibly the worst administration in history until Trump's came along. They're actually dismantling the federal government in favor of a plutocracy.
2
Bush should have been tried as a war criminal!
Along with Cheney, Rice, Powell, Wolfowitz, etc., etc.!

I appreciate and commend anyone that speaks the truth.
IF you find that to be a barbed tongue, because of speaking said truth, then I am fine with that as well.
We need more dedicated public servants such as her.

Houses take up too much space and house too few people. A better idea would be to erect large tents that could house hundreds of people nightly while affording them safety in the form of security patrols. These shelters would rent for 1/10th the cost of apartment rents ($100<$1000) thus saving the renters an approximate $900/mo or $10,800/yr.
2
The caption beneath the title reads, "Maxine Waters has been in Congress for a quarter-century, but in President Trump, her barbed tongue has found a perfect target - and an audience."
Now, as a man born in the late 70's, I am not exactly hyper-attuned to sexism. But it occurs to me that this caption is rather sexist in describing Maxine Waters as a "barbed tongue." If it were a male Congressman taking Trump on, would that caption read "barbed tongue?" I suspect it would instead read "tough."

An excellent point. I knew something about that caption felt uncomfortable but, regrettably, I didn't put my finger on what was wrong with it before you pointed it out.
3
God I hope the Democratic party gets it together for at least 2020! They need to move away from people like Waters, Pelosi, Schumer, Warren and Clinton. I don't see much happening for them in midterm elections which is sad. It seems they are going through their Tea Party phase much like the Republicans did after the disastrous 2008 elections!
Is reality becoming a hard thing for this world to comprehend?
Is reality becoming a hard thing for this world to comprehend?
17
I agree 100% with your comment. The Democratic Party is in free fall and they just keep doing the same things with the same leadership. At 78 ages old it's time for a change period. The party is failing time to clean house.
4
It takes a lot of courage to be Maxine Waters.
I salute her and hope she keeps on going and going and going.
I salute her and hope she keeps on going and going and going.
22
"Barbed tongue" and "sharp tongue" are not expressions ever used with men. Why didn't you write "her strong voice," "her bold voice" or "her fiery voice" found a perfect target?
207
I absolutely agree with your comment, CC
18
You make an excellent point and suggestion
4
Add to that, her vulgar tongue, after all it was she who called Trump a "scumbag," and his administration a bunch of "scumbags." She may 78, but
mighty mouth Maxine ain't no lady.

11
I have met Maxine Waters a few times. The last time was here in New York during a production of 'Miss Evers' Boys'. My friend and I had deluxe seats down front because I knew the stage manager; Congressman Waters and her husband had last minute seats near the back. Before the curtain went up we offered her and her husband our deluxe seats in deference to her and out of our admiration. She graciously declined. Then at intermission we saw her again and she did tell us that her husband, whose sight was not great, was having trouble seeing the production and I was then able to convince her finally to take our seats which we were thrilled to give her. Maxine Waters is an unbelievably gracious woman. It is to our benefit that she is as tough as nails in her position in Congress, and I cannot help but wonder whether that persona would make many jump at the suggestion that she is corrupt. But my experience is that she is a remarkably kind, gracious, and loving fair-minded woman with a keen sense of justice and is the perfect role model for any young person entering politics.
70
Maxine Waters is not the example we need for any race or political group. You said it yourself, she was voted most corrupt by the watchdogs in her own party! She is being celebrated because she's not afraid to come out with the gloves off? No. She is being celebrated because she is a picture of what is wrong with our society. Playing the victim...while being twice as nasty and hateful as the person she's accusing and slandering. When she can honestly state her views without spewing hatred...then I'll listen.
36
You mean like Trump?
21
I don't care whether Maxine Waters was corrupt in the past. I do care that she call out Trump for what he is: a narcissistic lying sociopathic con artist and probable covert Russian agent. Trump is owned by the Russians. He owes them millions and launders their dirty money. Water is right, Trump is a traitor and should have been impeached on day 1 of his Presidency. Good for her. Keep telling it like it is, Maxine.
41
I agree, jbk. Maxine is telling it like it is.
1
A 78 y/o black woman who takes on Trump & O'Really? She's my hero.
76
You mean heroine.
8
Any person taking on Trump with such vigor and courage is my hero, too!
5
I remember Maxine from the FBI's shrimpboat investigation in the 1980's. She had a headline in the SacBee stating she opposed ethic training for the CA legislature after a number of arrests, including multiple l e elected officials.
She may do some good, be she's dirty and has been that way for decades. She's not alone in congress.
She may do some good, be she's dirty and has been that way for decades. She's not alone in congress.
15
Her district is what she should be ashamed of, and her mouth. She's not fiesty. Just rude and ill mannered, ill tempered, and arrogant.
32
As one who has witnessed her rude, foul mouthed behavior at more than one Washington restaurant, she needs to go, but that is not my call.
31
JDL - we have a fouled-mouth president that is on twitter, television and in the papers and you heard Maxine in a restaurant? That's rich. The hypocrisy is very telling.
3
After this last election I am sure that those that need to understand the democratic platform are the least likely to listen to, much less embrace, the message of a black woman, especially when delivered antagonistically, and especially when delivered with intelligent language. The battle in America is one of rich and poor before all else. Democrats need to bite into that argument and hold on with locked jaws.
14
I love Yamiche Alcindor's work. I am so glad when she has a chair at Washington Week. May she be heard.
4
Go Auntie Maxine. I wouldn't say she's speaking forcefully, I'd say she's speaking the truth from her heart.
Trump requires serious engagement. America's Worst President cannot be chastised enough. Other Democratic Party leaders should take note of fieryWaters.

13
Unlike Limo Donald and his pampered sycophants, this tough broad ( a compliment in my old neighborhood) has actually worked for a living.
A check is coming Auntie.
Please - do not shut up.

President Trump works 20 hours a day in office and has achieved more in the past 5 months than big, foul mouth Waters has in the 27 years in the house. She's just a rabble rouser catering to a mostly destitute and free-loading constituency.
9
"Works" 20 hours a day ?
Come on! Hustles on the phone and is nurse-maided by Ivanka.......
Come on! Hustles on the phone and is nurse-maided by Ivanka.......
1
And what exactly has he done in 7 months? Proof of any legislation, etc. Other than tweeting from his golden toilet and dodged the press, what has he accomplished?
2
In 2012 a net worth of $5M on a politician's salary, something smells.
20
Smells like the median worth of Republican congresspersons.
13
Why the surprise? Miss Maxine is famously corrupt, and scandal-plagued. She helped family members make more than $1 million through business ventures with companies and causes that she helped. by virtue of her Congressional powers. She has also come under fire for skirting federal election rules with a shady fundraising gimmick. Nevertheless the troubled Waters was still chosen by her party to be their top representative on the Financial Services Committee. Grab your wallets when Maxine enters the room.
5
Actually if you invested disposable income from an net income of $100K/year (on average) for 27 years, I don't think $5m is out of the question. Plus she has her husband too. I don't know anything about her, but a $5m net worth after almost three decades in a professional's salary isn't that hard.
3
Trump is racist and misogynistic and more. It is fine to remind everyone of this daily.
Still, new ideas to attract the "deplorables" who voted for Trump and believed his lies need more evidence that the Democrats are at least more likely to try and satisfy their desires.

5
With all due respect, Ms. Waters, is, in my considered opinion, a light weight.
15
growing up in a country where you know that a cop could at any time stop one of your family and shoot them dead for no good reason and get off scot-free...
no wonder she can stand her political ground.
no wonder she can stand her political ground.
14
The average person reaches the apex of their mental abilities and then start to decline. Mandatory retirement age for members of Congress is not a crazy idea. There have been too many perma-members, both Demos and Repubs, who go on and on like the Energizer Bunny. One hundred years ago, short life spans prevented this from happenings. Maxine, Nancy, and so forth and so on, time to retire and let the younger generations take command.
18
Actually, most studies today dispel these ageist myths.
1
One slight flaw in your logic: We aren't are 100 years ago.

Maxine comes off as unhinged to those on the other side .. she is not changing minds... only lowering the bar for the other side to follow when the Dem's are in charge.
She should spend her time working for her district -- need help.
She should spend her time working for her district -- need help.
14
Lowering the bar -- no, that's been done by Trump and Cruz and Lee and Perry and DeVos and Chaffetz and ...

She's been clever at getting publicity for herself for a long time. What are her accomplishments besides self promotion?

12
Mad Max's pearls of wisdom. One thing is for certain the woman has the gift of expression without very many ideas to express.
9
I'm glad she is so vociferous against that disaster in the Whitehouse. We need more people on the left like her. I have often wondered why there are such harsh narratives on the right while the left
sits by and cry about it. Get in the trenches and fight like Maxine.
sits by and cry about it. Get in the trenches and fight like Maxine.
9
I applaud the Congresswoman's outspokenness. Unfortunately, the Democrats, much as they try, cannot make a platform out of "Trump is disgusting." It is time for the Democrats to offer policies that will have concrete benefits for all Americans. Policies like Medicare For All, sending crooked TBTF bankers to prison, getting Citizens United overturned. It can't be said often enough: You can't beat something with nothing.
8
Resist? This is not time for passive resistance especially in Washington. 21st c. problems need 21st c. answers. Keep talking Maxine.
9
I watched her tonight claiming Trump colluded with Putin and was doing his bidding. This disturbs me as we don't yet have any proof of this. Like everyone else, I suspect it's true. But I think Waters should be more careful going that far. She's a member of Congress.
10
And Trump is president of the united states. He lies and states his unproven hallucinations as fact nearly every day. Focus.
2
Maxine Waters really you have got to be kidding. A Democrat leader get real, if so then thats one of there problems. They wonder why they lost the election .
18
Its fascinating to read all the NYT's readers celebrating Rep Maxine Waters' diatrabes and vehement, vitriolic castigations against the President. She should be in jail for her corrupt behavior. The fact that she is in the House of Representatives demonstrates the profound failure of our legal system.
20
Rep. Waters is justifiably enraged that Trump did nothing when Russia invaded Korea.
This is why her colleagues call her "Muddled Waters"

The Democratic Party needs more pitbulls
10
They had one in Rep Anthony Weiner, but they drove him out because the rest of them are so "pure and decent".
6
Can she go away?
12
Jack; she can go when Sarah Palin goes...
10
yay Auntie Maxine! you go girl
8
The Republicans don't seem to mind when Sarah Palin does her grandstanding.
25
I've always liked her, and with the stolen election and over five months of the insane Trump presidency and the idiocy and corruption of Republicans in Congress, I am in a very Maxine state of mind and plan to be for as long as it takes to create positive change. She represents her district well, and cares about everyday people. More power to her.
16
How I miss the days of "When they go low, we go high".
Maxine Waters is most effective when she bluntly points out Trump "doesn't care about the issues facing the African-American community", but less so when she denigrates him - "disgusting, poor excuse for a man".
Simply stating the truth damages his brand, no need to lower yourself to the level of the right wing smear-mongers.

9
Ms. Waters problem is that no one takes her seriously.
13
What a national treasure Maxine in here is folks, real connection to the middle class in every way especially when she's preaching from her hyper liberal front door of her $4.5 million 6000sqft house she lives in with a neighborhood 90% white in a state with the worst housing affordability crisis in the country Hypocrisy is a dish best served cold.
20
Yes, she's the new face of the Democratic Party, and one of the reasons it will soon be relagated to the dustbin of history.
20
Alt-Right troll.
8
Good for you Maxine! We are proud of you and your astute judgment. Trump should have been impeached before the election. Go get that money grubbing crook out of office. Where are the Republicans? Why haven't they acted? They will pay and dearly in the next elections. The issues are healthcare, planned parenthood, clean air, freedom to vote no matter your color, freedom of religion even for minority religions, freedom of the internet--freedom freedom freedom. We want our democracy back we want honest judges we want an administration that is not comprised of corrupt old men who want to hide America from the rest of the world under some heavy cloak of Russian conspiracy and rightist suprression.

Ms Waters represents the spirit of what the Founding Fathers envisioned from our elected Representatives, they are supposed to speak for the people. If Ms. Waters was not effectively representing her constituents s for the past 25 years they would not have reelected here Ms Waters 12 times. Saying she is corrupt is rich coming from the GOP "what's in it for me" party.
You go Maxine, keep Trumps feet to the fire. If Mr Obama could stand the vitriol of the GOP for the past 8 years I think you have the "fire" to keep going to see this chap taken out of the Oval Office.

9
This will bring a measure of comfort to those who already loathe Trump and be seen by his supporters as yet more proof of every assertion DJT has made. A long-serving black female Democrat verbally "assailing" the reigning and anointed President, where is the news in that?
3
This isn't news at all, so why publish such as story? Rep. Waters has been shooting off her mouth in an uncivil way for a generation.
15
I think it's fairly clear that attacks on trump won't change much. His base and Capitol Hill mercenaries are content to let him spout off while they busily pursue the work of undermining the foundations of America.
What will bother trump the most is that Ms. Waters might eventually be a competitor for the limelight he so desperately craves. Should be good for some cranky, malformed early-morning tweets, but nothing else will change.

Way to go Maxine, you are right on target, don't mince your words, This Potus does not deserve it! Thank you for speaking out, we need more brave MoCs like you.
6
Can't ever recall NyTimes refer to white male Congressman as "barbed tongue."
8
Or "Uncle." "Auntie" is term many southern whites used towards black women during slavery and later segregation era.
Black educator Mary McLeod Bethune despised the term, as she wrote whenever white men called her "Auntie," she'd ask which of my siblings child are you?
Yet, within one article, NyTimes has managed to use two disparaging terms for black Congresswoman - and strangely, written by another black woman.
What's up with that YAMICHE ALCINDOR?

9
Another fine Democrat standard bearer - a 78 year old repeatedly named the most corrupt representative in Congress. Is this the best leadership Democrats can muster? What does this (and the other ancients, Pelosi et al) say about the state of the party?
15
Love her!
7
Auntie Maxine,
I love your in-your-face delivery to defend our country against trump's piecemeal disassembly of our democracy, albeit a dollar democracy.
Today I asked a man who had just proudly announced that he voted for trump "What aspect of trump most reminds you of Jesus?"
Of course, he said "Oh, they're different." Now there was something we could agree on.
The trump/GOP cabal tries to make us believe that their six months of attacking the courts, the intel. community, the media, while cozying up to Putin is somehow normal.
It is not normal, and Auntie Maxine reminds us of that fact.

Every little bit helps.
8
Maxine. Bernie. Pelosi. Three septuagenarians standing up for what's right and against the tides of all that is wrong with Trump and his approach to this country. Would that some younger colleagues might take up the cause with them. We seniors say "Right on!"
10
Many other voices are silent, except to pander to their electorate.
2
It's problematic that when a woman (particularly a black woman) speaks her mind in an assertive manner, she's said to have a 'barbed tongue." No one would ever say that of Mitch McConnell or Newt Gingrich. There's nothing so honorable as being courageous enough to speak a truth that so many acknowledge but so few are brave enough to state firmly.
7
Hummmm, she worked on the Jessie Jackson campaign....? Really?!?!
Yes, I suppose that could be true: I just watched a speech she just recently gave..... Some similarities in verbal and physical delivery between the two; loud hyperbole, arms flailing, spittle flying, etc...
My gut tells me that I would trust her about as much as I would trust Brother Jessie - which ain't much...
Oh, Barbara Jordan, we miss you...!

Waters is entertaining, but she lacks the gravitas required to do more than mildly annoy Trump.
The president has already laid the foundation of his demise in his dealings with Russia and his relentless self-destruction.

2
Yes she is one of the reasons I'm no longer a Democrat. Great leadership for the other side.
15
I only have one question: with all the interviews, speeches, and other media opportunities; when does Maxine Waters actually work?
8
Maxine Walters, whom I have had the good fortune to meet, may not be perfect, but she is perfectly rational when it comes to describing the demerits of Donald Trump. Over the long haul, her voice may help tip the American people against our demagogic president.
If you have any doubts about the best way to fight the encroachments of age, consider the way Maxine lives: in a continuously aggressive posture toward injustice. Follow her example and, obviously, your senior years can be the most useful of your life.

Like the like the big church preacher who presents himself as a savior and becomes rich from the flock, so has Waters. Not a soul saved, but much of the same noise, and yes she has become rich, lives in a multi million dollar house in an all white enclave far from her constituents. She and Trump are cut from the same cloth.
6
So few people besides Maxine Waters have the passion and ability to confront what Trump is doing to threaten our democratic institutions. She has the wisdom of long life and the power of a woman determined.
American history will cast Waters as a shining star who was enough to preserve American values (along with our Judicial branch of government) or she was not and we take a big step into the dark place where the likes of Putin and other power hungry tyrants reside.

5
Great Cory Booker quote.
2
Long before this moment Congresswoman Waters was someone to listen to carefully. Her carefully formed ideas and concerns have made her a real leader and an important voice. Its easy to admire to her and even if you don't agree with her she is serious and strong. What we need.
6
No. Just no. Nobody with a brain thinks this.
Character assassination and bashing the opposition is easy and gets a rise out of the base. But I'm not convinced that vilifying Trump (as villainous as he may be) is the way to bring back the roughly 13% of Obama voters who voted for him.
In the end the DEMs need to understand the needs of voters, offer meaningful policies that improve Americans' lives, and communicate those policies to them effectively.

1
One only had to look at the conditions of the towns in her district to realize that all she does is talk and has not delivered for her constituents. She has always been in front of the cameras, but behind the scenes she has never had a major impact on legislation. Time to retire.
5
There are only a few people in Congress who I have respect for. Maxine Waters is at the top of the list. If more Democrats were like her, they might win some elections. She doesnt compromise her values.
5
Rep. Waters isn't perfect but don't let that obscure her important message.
The Trump international crime family and team needs a thorough investigation by an independent prosecutor. Russian interference in the election and the Trump team's co-mingling with the Russians without transparency of their finances is destroying our country.
Ms. Waters is rightly carrying that message to the American people.

6
Ms. Alcindor refers to Inglewood as "gritty, but gentrifying" in the article. Not true. A few PARTS of Inglewood could be described at gritty, but those are in the minority. Inglewood is home to a largely middle class population. You can drive through Inglewood and not hit a gritty part. Home prices in Inglewood have long been significantly higher than those in South Los Angeles, which borders it. They're not the same. Furthermore, the description leads to a future (false) narrative that Inglewood was ghetto until white people moved there. It's insulting and not true, and the NY Times should fact check before publishing a description that mischaracterizes and insults a city.
4
"Feisty", the word used to describe her in the photo caption, is not a word I like when applied to strong women. It gets applied frequently to women who display a spirited demeanor and tends to belittle the woman and trivialize her concerns
3
She is the kind of person who should be in control of the country. I wish there were more like her. You go Maxine.
4
She shouldn't be the only one speaking out forcefully and often.
145
Right On! Where are the rest of the Democrats? Take off the gloves as she says
7
Another Trump troll.
2
Maxine Waters uses words beautifully, and that is my weak spot. If there is anyone I would follow, right or wrong, she be it.
38
Maxine Waters is one of three African American congresswomen from Ca. Each one is a leader in their own right. Karen Bass former speaker of the Ca assembly currently in the house Democratic leadership. Barbara Lee who recently was successful in passing an amendment to the authorization to go to war after 9/11. They have been joined recently by Senator Kamala Harris D Ca who true to tradition spoke up as a member of the Senate intelligence committee. They have all excelled at speaking out on issues that go beyond the areas of minority interests. Congresswoman Waters has always been a forceful advocate for the poor and powerless. Here's hoping she continues to speak out.
86
That Maxine Waters is the heroine of the Left explains why Dems are not wining elections.
54
And a love of illiteracy explains why Repubs don't care.
Wining and dining indeed, on reverse Robin Hood.
Wining and dining indeed, on reverse Robin Hood.
9
Or could it be gerrymandering? Or maybe the electoral college, which gave the last two Republican presidents the office without the popular vote? Or any other number of anti-democratic manuevers that help Republicans to win? Because, after all, democracy and liberty are just obstacles for Republicans.
She's winning her district.
3
Maxine Waters should be saluted and celebrated in her open defiance of the current Republican president who is nothing less than an abomination and unfit to be holding the office. The venal cowards that decided that someone of such proven demerit should be this nations leader, will go down in history as the compromised influence peddling criminals that enabled it to happen.
95
The fact that Trump is reprehensible does not make Maxine Waters any more admirable. Two separate things, get it?
5
Maxine Waters is a rock star
47
You're shouting.
In the digital world, using all caps is shouting and considered offensive. It adds nothing to whatever your point is supposed to be.
Didn't you know that?

Didn't you know that?
Both Trump and Waters do not need to be in public office. Both are corrupt and only care for what they can get out of the American people by appealing to the worst in all of us.
They should be ashamed - and we shouldn't salute either one of them - not now, not ever.

15
As false an equivalence as it can get!
1
She is standing up while the rest if us are sheep watching this Russian Spy President. We need more people to stand up to the Russian takeover.
45
Remember the Russians hacked the DNC emails and Hillary Clinton's server while Obama was still president. He never brought it to the attention of the nation until six months afterwards in December 2016. Some say he was guilty of malfeasance by waiting all that time and he should have acted sooner.
6
Interesting in that for more than 70 years it was the Democrat Party that coddled the Soviets and then Russia to the detriment of the US. Now all of a sudden, Russia is the evil empire. When Romney said in the 2012 debate that Russia was the greatest threat, Obama, the media and the left ridiculed him. So, I guess broken down, defeated liberals need a reason to explain their humiliating defeats in 2016, 2014, etc etc etc. We won, get over it.
6
Her district, a basket case, speaks well of her poor service, ever a distraction from her self assumed role as Critic in Chief. What an embarrassment.
38
Except that it's been GOP governors and legislature who run the state, not their Congresswoman. Her district is improving under Brown.
2
You mean the district she doesn't even live in?
5
Jerry Brown is a Republican? Who knew! And by the way, the California legislature has been controlled by Dems for almost 60 years.
4
She is delusional, just like the rest of far-left who have convinced themselves that Trump somehow orchestrated the Russian interference.
Her surety has replaced actual proof.
Her surety has replaced actual proof.
32
Trump didn't have to orchestrate the interference to participate in it and benefit from it. If he is so innocent he should be eager to prove it.
4
I don't think many rational people on the left believe Trump is smart enough or capable enough to orchestrate Russian interference. He appears unable to orchestrate much at all. Instead most believe he's simply very easy to manipulate, which is why Putin did all he could to ensure he got elected. That's why Trump fights against the evidence of our intelligence agencies - to admit Russia influenced the election is to admit to his own shortcomings as a leader.
2
John - speaking of russia - where are those tax returns ? and why are you not ask gin for them? and what is he hiding?
Here's the bad news for Republicans: Nature will, sooner rather than later, remove this 78-year-old raging misanthrope from the scene. What then? Give more of the spotlight to the 77-year-old Nancy Pelosi? Or Bernie Sanders, who was born before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
11
And just how is that bad news for Republicans?
3
Oh my god - if I had a real aunt like "Auntie Maxine," I would run the other way!
28
"Un-bought and un-bossed". Perfect.
We need about a thousand like that in the Democratic Party.
We need about a thousand like that in the Democratic Party.
48
Wait...unbought? Ummmm... Think about the first couple paragraphs of this...she was voted most corrupt by her own party's watchdogs. Corruption=being bought...in DC vernacular.
6
This woman seems deeply disturbed, but she sure gets an audience. She has a counterpart in Texas. His name escapes me. He is the one who spread the mythology about Ferguson which was debunked by Eric Holder's justice department. They are birds of a feather. Facts mean nothing to them.
23
Am guessing the fountain of facts being broadcast by the President is non pareil. We certainly live in a wonderful world these days.
1
Unless the Congresswoman can use her barbed tongue to articulate a radically updated Democratic Party message she's just whistling Dixie.
10
I don't know? Look where it got Chris Christie.
As a huge fan of Auntie Maxine, my only qualm with this piece is that it didn't take the opportunity to shoot down the criticisms from the right that she doesn't even live in her own district, and that she chooses instead to live in a multi-million dollar home in an adjacent district that's nearly all white.
So what? It's the modern era and location has less meaning than it used to. Even Jon Ossoff didn't live in the district he ran for, and that didn't seem to be an issue either. Plus, we all know from the last election that poor black people don't seem to vote that much and due to their lack of being plugged in, Hillary lost. So it probably makes more sense for Ms. Waters to live outside of her district - where people don't engage that much - and in a district that has some of the most dedicated, active, and impactful donors and volunteers in the nation.
Rock on, Ms. Waters! White progressives love what you do! And if you ever need to move into another one of our districts for nicer living arrangements than the ones available in your own district, we'll be more than happy to accommodate you! Don't let the haters hate. Shake it off.

Progressive Resistor -
The "So what?" mentality is one reason we are in the current mess.
Took some campaign donations from dark money, so what?
Vote against the interests of your constituents, so what?
Involved in unethical behavior, so what?
Is loud, abrasive and uncivil, so what?
Has no political experience, so what?
The reason the NYT did not "shoot down those criticisms", as much as you dislike them, is because they are accurate.
This is not a Democrat or Republican problem, this is our problem and a reason we should place term limits on members of Congress. At some point it stops becoming a service and it becomes a career for these Democrat and Republican "Representatives".
Then again, so what? Right?

The minute I saw Trump trash the New York Times reporter I predicted if Trump won, he would be impeached by Halloween Seventeen. It was obvious to me that the American people would never allow a person like that to be the leader of the free world. Representative Waters didn't call for his impeachment until he finished the last word of the oath and that shows me that she has the ability to be patient.
21
Donald Trump will NEVER be impeached - mark my words
and he'll also be remembered by history as one of the greatest most successful presidents EVER...bank on it

Ms. Maxine "Hurricane" Waters- age 78; Bernie "Tornado" Sanders- age 75: These are the feisty Youngsters the Democratic Party requires to lead it onto the rough terrain of battle for our Democracy.
Millennials and Gen X-ers are welcome to join the fight.

Don't forget about that fiery young upstart Hillary Clinton. She's only 69.

Because people like Waters are completely out of touch and don't have the desire or the ability to inspire young people together involved in public service.
The cabal that runs the DNC had zero interest in getting young people to the polls because they assumed the geriatrics they gathered up to sing the praises of Hillary Clinton would get the job done.
It makes perfect sense that someone as out of touch as Maxine Waters didn't know the meaning of the word "woke."
There needs to be a youth movement in politics.
It's only too bad that Obama didn't do more to get young people in the pipeline, coached up and trained in how to do politics.

Poor Dan Quayle got a Wiki mention for simply misspelling potatoe....err potato.

Two points...
1. Russia didn't invade Korea. But they did invade Ukraine.
2. There was no such thing as Wikipedia when Dan Quayle was Vice President. Or even a world wide web, for that mater.

Someone has to call Trump out each day. So many, including Democrats and members of the news media who are constantly dissed by Trump set such a low barrier, like will he bring up interfering in our elections in his meeting with Putin, that it is impossible for Trump not to meet the standard with a huge sigh of relief from those who are desperate to think that Trump is going to rise to the office, even though yesterday Trump was suggesting that it could have been anyone who interfered with our elections, then saying he was not sure there was interference and then blaming President Obama for not doing anything about the interference which Trump still had not acknowledged actually took place. Thank you Ms Waters for maintaining the continuity, I mean discontinuity, of what Trump said and did yesterday with what he said and did today and will say and do tomorrow.
12
He ran for office, I said,no way, he campaigned, I said "does anyone believe this guy?" He got elected , I said" we'll be sorry." I admit never being a fan, and he continually shows his true colors. Yet repeatedly he is given excuses, chances , opportunities to correct his Un-American acts. It's not even laughable any more. It's sad, scary, frustrating, contemptuous, traitorous, criminal, and still yet, they yell "Give him a chance! " He's new, he's not a politician,he's rich, he's never been told no and yet when he has been he throws a temper tantrum. Please, please, please stop this inexcusable behavior by someone who should be working for us, honoring us, protecting us. Caring for us. He has never done this for anyone than for the most important person in his life, no not any of his children, not his parents, nor any of his wives. Draw your own conclusions.
23
"Ken Boehm, the chairman of the National Legal and Policy Center, a right-leaning, ethics-in-government group, called her a grandstander."
'It’s odd that you would come out for impeachment like right at the gate,' he said. “The guy takes his hand off the Bible and it’s like, ‘Impeach him.’”
And the difference between this and Mitch McConnell announcing that he'd stop any effort at all by President Obama to effectuate the Dem agenda is. . .

Maxine Waters is just on to another gig. Her credentials for sainthood are few and far between.
11
Thank you Maxine Waters for speaking the truth and not caring about being liked or approved of by the political element in DC. I respect and admire you so very much, blessings.

An active Trump troll --- you must be connected to the fake news given to MSNBC...

Ms. Waters is fighting the good fight. In speaking out against Mr. Trump she exemplifies the very best of our historical American ideals and principles which were once-upon-a-time extolled not only by the left but also by the right. Like any good American, she is speaking truth to power. That is the very battle in which we find ourselves: on the one side truth and on the other power.
(Many comments here claim she is hurting the Democrats. Only somebody who is very naïve or very complicit would fail to see what most of those comments are actually saying. That she is hurting Democrats because she is black and a woman. Shame on all of you.)

13
Way to immediately go to the race and misogyny cards, without a SHRED of evidence!
As someone who actually had to suffer with her as my representative for eight years, I can tell you from personal experience that she is like Lisa Bloom or Jesse Jackson. She will throw herself into the ring any time she sees an issue she can make hay or camera time with.
The only person that ever benefits from Ms. Waters' actions is Ms. Waters.

I think "She is hurting Democrats because she isn't polite to a crooked and incompetent person who got elected President" should be added to Robert's comment.
5
We need alot of Maxines in the House before we can rid ourselves of Trump.
24
I really like her - and honestly, she is such a refreshing woman who speaks to truth. I especially like her views on Trump. Wish we had more people who would get up and speak their minds to power.
26
About that so-called "scandal" and the condemnation from "fair and balanced" Democrats colluding with Republicans ...
I was around at the time, and did some reading about it. It hardly touches the scale in the presence of the daily corruption and scandal that is the norm on the Republican side. She took advantage a little, but it wasn't much, and in the end I decided it was grossly inflated for advantage.
And Maxine Waters is right: when someone yells "You lie" to the president, that's aggressive. Her attempt to get heard would be just normal for a man. But in a woman it's "unbecoming".
You go girl!

Isn't that EXACTLY what Republicans said they would do the minute Hillary Clinton took office? And didn't Mitch McConnell proclaim openly that his only goal and the goal of the Republican party should be to deny President Obama any success? Their goal was never the health and well being of the citizens of this country, any more than it is today. These so-called leaders talk out of both sides of their mouths and their obviousness would be laughable if it wasn't responsible for so much pain for middle class, working class, and lower income Americans.

Maxine Waters has played a leading role in progressive causes before, though she hasn't always been there. Given the language that "conservatives" (really right wing radicals, because they want to destroy rather than conserve) use nowadays, I think it's pretty rich for them to complaint about Waters' rhetoric.
Demographic nitpick--the article twice describes Torrance, in the southwestern part of Waters' district--as dominated by white working class people. But the Census shows Torrance as 42% non-Hispanic white, 34% Asian, and 16% Latino. Torrance is well known for offices of Japanese companies and Japanese oriented malls.

If there is such a person, it is Ms. Waters. We need a morally upright bully who can stand up to an amoral bully wielding too much power.
14
Maxine Waters doesn't have clean hands, it is practically impossible for anyone involved in DC politics 25 years to not get a little dirt on them. That being said, if she's going to go toe to toe with the Trump administration, I am with her. Republican operatives trying to use past allegations against her will only remind people of the present allegations against Trump & Co. I have no doubt, as a former Democrat, that the Dem powers that be are busily test grouping and strategizing on how to make Maxine's talking points more "appealing" in their delivery. The Democratic leadership, for 30 years, has been gentrified to appeal to corporate tastes. Showing anything more than mild annoyance at the opposition's actions is viewed as a negative. They have become conditioned to compromise, and sadly people like Maxine are a dying breed in that party. Democratic leaders are unwilling to accept that sometimes, in a fight for your beliefs, you have to meet folks where they're at.
13
So she's a "show boater" and "grandstander." And Trump ISN'T?! She is just what she says she is, a strong black woman who won't be shoved around. Trump has proven himself a racist, misogynist, crass ego freak.
I agree that the Democratic Party needs to get out of the Northeast and realize there are incalculable opportunities in the rest of this vast country.

Rep. Waters and I both grew up at the same time in the same highly segregated city.
You go, girl!

12
I'm all for Maxine giving POTUS heck, but please refrain from using the same kind of language he does - it undercuts her position. There's some important stuff that needs to be called out, we need more than name-calling.
7
We need a progressive black woman as POTUS.
12
If the Dems would run Mad Max as a POTUS candidate, i know many Republicans who would be happy to contribute $ to her campaign.
1
I first liked Maxine's feisty style years ago when she appeared on the MacNeill/Lehr Newshour and was working on the Jesse Jackson campaign.
3
I think I like her.
In fact, I'm positive, after reading the stupid Bill O'Reilly comment about her hair.
She may not be an "angry white man," but she has chops. Go, Ms. Waters.

“It’s odd that you would come out for impeachment like right at the gate,” he said. “The guy takes his hand off the Bible and it’s like, ‘Impeach him.’”
Since Trump was in direct breach of the emoluments clause as soon as he was sworn in, it makes perfect sense to call for his impeachment immediately.
This complaint only demonstrates that right wing "ethics" is an oxymoron.

I've been watching Maxine on MSNBC and I agree with every word she says about the one who I hope to see impeached. She can say it 1,000 more times! We need to hear more of Maxine's righteous indignation.
16
I'm sorry but does Ms. Waters's footwear have to do with all this? Would you describe a male congressperson's fashion? Of course not.
14

Well, the reason she immediately called for his impeachment is because as soon as he finished swearing on the Bible, he was violating the Emoluments clause.

Trump violated the emoluments clause of the constitution as soon as his hand left the bible, so what's wrong with Waters calling for impeachment on Day One?
21
Ms. Waters, concerned Americans thank you for the encouragement to "get up and scream and holler." I am glad you are setting a good example for our young people to participate in government.

Ms. Waters is a dedicated member of Congress who has served her consituents with utmost professionalism for many years.
Nevertheless, she is doing the country no good whatsoever by the type of public attacks she makes against Trump. By deliberately insulting him on the world stage she embarrasses this country and does her party's mission no good. I make no apologies for Mr. Trump's behavior, but it makes Ms. Waters behavior no less culpable. In fact, she should hold herself to her usual higher standard.
When we engage in public insults, all parties, not just one or the other, make us look foolish to the rest of the world, and all parties are to blame. The world doesn't distinguish between Ms. Waters and Mr. Trump. All they see is a disfunctional family publicly squabling among themselves. If Mr. Trump won't change his behavior, we should not make us all appear even more foolish by publicly responding in kind.

Maxine Waters is another example, like Mitch McConnell, of why we need term limits for Congress.
18
No, no, no! We have the power of term limits through voting! Limiting terms limits the wisdom gained by experience.
4
'She was investigated for three years after she contacted the Treasury Department in 2008 to set up a meeting on behalf of top executives from a bank that her husband owns stock in.' = small potatoes compared to the massive conflicts of interest, influence peddling, and selling of the office Trump engages in.
7
She was investigated because she set up the meeting on behalf of minority owned banks and was accused of setting up the meeting on behalf of the bank her husband owned stock in.
She was exonerated when it was found that she set up the meeting on behalf of minority owned banks. When she found out her husband's bank was included she removed herself from the equation.

She's awesome!
5
Regardless of her positions on issues, oratorical style, or perceived trustworthiness or corruption, she deserves more respect and thought by the Times than to refer to her as, 'Auntie.'
4
The Twitterverse, refers to her as #AuntieMaxine. Just like they refer to Bernie Sanders as #UncleBernie, Joe Biden is #UncleJoe. I understand where you are coming from with the reference, but see the first comment under Readers Picks. It is a term of endearment and doesn't carry the same connotation from previous times.
Sure, what Maxine says about Trump is true - but, nevertheless, her outbursts are a bad thing for the Democratic party.
To regain control of our country, Democrats must start to become aware of what motivates people to vote for the Republicans. Engaging in tactics that separate the Democratic party from the American People are extremely counterproductive.
Representative Waters is from California. a Blue State - playing to your home audience, preaching to the people who will always vote Democratic, does not help the party.
Let's get some Democrats who are not from California or New York and put them on the Front Page of the Times. Some of their ideas might offend the California/New York crowd; for example, opposing gun control - but that's OK, the Democratic Party needs to drop non-productive doctrine.
New York and California are just one segment of America, and without support from the voters in many more states, we will never defeat the Republicans, who are actually far more aware of what is going on in America than the "Machine" politicians of our coastal cities.
Trump is not the problem - he is merely a symptom of the problem. The real problem is massive Democratic Party ignorance of the electorate, as evinced by the actions by the DNC leadership.
In fact, let's have the Times feature them telling Americans that they support the 2nd Amendment. Why, because winning control of America is important,

Sugar--denial doesn't make something true. Most educated Americans are aware of gerrymandering, electoral theft & other issues that contribute to popular candidates losing elections. Until the tax supporting blue states decide to stop carrying the water for the flyover red states, this won't likely change.

I've been driving down to South Central LA for 15 years to teach (part of her district) and nothin's changed. It's still the same old economically depressed

Silly. You know how and what it takes to 'bring the bacon back to the district'. Perhaps Auntie Maxine doesn't kow-tow as well as her cohorts. So don't lecture me sonny boy.
3
well, someone once said, "the poor will always be with you." i'd wager she's not more powerful than him.
You do realize that Maxine Water's district (e.g. Inglewood, Gardena, and Torrance largely) is an entirely different area of Los Angeles than South Central / South LA?
Your comment harkens back to the ill-informed remarks that trump made about Congressman John Lewis district.

1
A strong black woman. Of course the all white Southern GOP doesn't like her. Look at how they treated Michelle Obama, if it was up to the racist GOP, Waters would be drinking out of separate water fountain and be denied the right to vote. The GOP is nothing more than than a Southern Party devoted to white supremacy.
26
Don't confuse "strong" with "loud." Color and gender are irrelevant in this context.
9
You have no idea how profound a truth you speak. If you could have seen the reaction of St. Louis to the Brown v. Board of Ed decision in the 1950's, you would want to apologize to her for claiming that this thing called the USA was ever remotely anything like a country ... or whether it was merely a partnership of the Confederacy and the "North" in something like NATO or the EU.
2
As a "former conservative" when that mean't something unlike now where it is simply steal the country for the 1% , I applaud her. She does not mince words. RESPECT IS GIVEN UNTIL YOUR ACTIONS SQUANDER IT. Trump lied about everything in his campaign. Remember better , lower cost heathcare? Giving up his business ? Working 24/7 at the job( 25% of this time playing golf at his tacky clubs). Not involving his family in the government? The most transparent government ever, Drain the swamp? Trump is a liar like the world has never seen. Take him dowm Ms. Waters, we are all counting on you.
47
Bravo

Spent a year one day in Pomona. Just another democrat plantation where the combine moves through on election night.
9
Look at the list below, just the ones that were caught, even if they were "exonerated".
Why do people want Donald Trump running their health care? Why do they want the people below running it, or anything else for that matter?
Folks, the problem here is ~the government~, not some bad actors within it. Whatever you may think of Trump. he was elected just like Obama was. That's no argument that you must support him, but if you enjoy using government force against others when Obama does it, then you can understand why other people like using force against you when Trump does it. That's wrong, and it's wrong when either side does it.
Your very best argument for anything is best served in taking the moral high road. When things are wrong, decry them. When things are wrong, even if you dearly want to support x political hack, decry them. Anything else is just hypocrisy.
Ms. Waters has always been perfectly happy doing to others what she thinks is being done to her now, and this is why politicians' words are meaningless. Odd, politicians hate when the CIA, NSA, FSB, SVR, etc., hacks their emails and calls, but many of them are perfectly content with those institutions doing that to us.

Wrong is wrong folks, even if you love the wrongdoer.

Auntie Maxine is what pundits and Republicans mean when they go on TV and pretend there is a far left to "balance" the far right in American politics. It's a shame there aren't more of her to make the media myth a political reality.
6
Please please please please please don't make me beg for some little touch of civility in politics.
4
That ship sailed, crashed and sank back when "Bette Davis Eyes" was the number 1 hit.
2
Love that she speaks her mind about Trump - in doing so she is speaking for all of us who share her views. We need more Democrats (and Republicans) to follow her lead and more forcefully make the point that should be obvious to anyone paying attention - Trump is unfit and unqualified for office, and a danger to us all.
30
Maxine, introduce a motion for censure 45, and watch the Republicans squirm.
6
"squirm"? If Mad Max introduced such a motion, I think the Repubs would rejoice!
1
"...a 78 year old Washington fixture..." Really? is there anybody in the Dem leadership that isn't a fossil? Its time to face the future.
28
oh yes, the leaders and lawmakers of the GOP are so young and fresh...
Like the 71 year old president (oldest prez ever), a 75 year old senate leader, a 70 year old Attorney General, plus 83 year old Senator Orrin Hatch, 80 year old John McCain... I could go on. You were saying?

16
She is not a fossil. She is a human being who has experience and wisdom. What have you done for society today?
13
The "fossils" you speak of aren't afraid to speak truth to power.
And by the way, Trump is 71, in case you haven't noticed.
And by the way, Trump is 71, in case you haven't noticed.

This is the way forward to electoral success for the Democratic Party (not to mention what the country needs). Don't listen to the so-called "serious" Democrats that recommend moving the center. ~I am with~ Maxine, Elizabeth and Bernie.
12
I desperately need to know if Yamiche Alicindor is related to the former Lew Alcindor, now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. I am a many decades-old UCLA fan.
Waters style is nothing new in a post 2016 environment.
Republicans rarely pay a price for grandstanding, or ignoring optics. Trump and Christie proved that. But Democrats are often held to a different standard.

Not often. Always.
I wish with all my heart that "When they go low, we go high" could win elections.
1
Why not EVERY SINGLE DECENT, self-respecting and patriotic American is not acting as Maxine has been, is beyond me. Truly beyond me. What we have in the White House is an unapologetic crass liar, an abettor of our sworn enemies, and a molester of our Constitution and the Presidency, who gleefully maligns in any which way that he pleases the other two branches of government. It's impossible for Maxine or anyone else to hit the shrill note that this rolling travesty that our nation is currently enduring deserves. Utterly impossible.
216
Personally I prefer this obvious mess to Pence or Ryan. That is the only reason I am not for impeachment.

@Ahmed-
Allow me to answer. Because Liberal Democrat "voters" do everything except VOTE! They make time for the pre-election protests, sit-ins, drum circles and poetry slams but on election day they NEVER SHOW UP! On Election Day- They are always too busy spending time with their emotional support animal, getting their hybrid car serviced or shopping at Whole Foods. They assume that every other liberal will vote- so their vote isn't needed. It's all about voter turn-out and showing up when it counts. Plenty of time for drum circles and poetry slams AFTER the Election! They'll never understand this and that is why they will continue to lose.

Aaron--my entire family are Democrats--we vote, volunteer and donate. Stop generalizing. That is NOT the reason this buffoon is in the White House. Gerrymandering, Koch Brothers, outdated electoral slavery process and Trump/Putin bromance are the real reasons.
1
Demonstrates once again that The Times is out of touch. Republicans are saying - please, please, please make her the spokeswoman for the Democrats. They are hoping, begging and praying.
63
If she is the spokesman for the Democratic Party, then we, the republicans, are in good shape.
22
That makes no sense -- Waters is only doing what Nunes and/or Chaffetz would have done and were preparing to do when Hillary Clinton got elected. Frankly, the Democrats need more like her -- with someone like Trump, you need to get down in the dirt and that may not even be low enough. That's the difference, the Repubs loved to get down in the dirt on anything and everything that Obama and Clinton did, but the Democrats have never been able to do it, but Waters seems to be able to, so that's the good news.
6
I'd like to see her in a ring with the President that you chose. He would be defenceless. She is able to be vehement and dignified at the same time. Dignity does not come nigh his dwelling.
3
She is the living definition of party hack and putting party over country.
67
I could easily apply your comment to almost every member of the Republican House and Senate.
25
Take out the word "almost" and you are more than almost correct.
6
Ditto!
2
Ms. Waters, I salute you!!! You rock!! Please don't let those thugs in the White House intimidate and silence you ---

Kind of like the Republicans who suggested last fall that they would initiate impeachment proceedings immediately against Hillary Clinton if she were elected. The hypocrisy of Trump supporters is laughable.

I admit having to stop reading for a moment, almost at the beginning of the article - I was eating lunch and unfortunately ran across this little phrase that caused me to almost choke (or gag) at even the remote possibility of such a position being viable: "...Ken Boehm, the chairman of the National Legal and Policy Center, a right-leaning, ethics-in-government group..." There is no way on this earth that "ethics", or "ethics in government" can possibly be used in connection with "right-leaning"...that is like describing something as "cold and hot", "left and right" at the same time. There is no longer any hint of "ethics" in our right-leaning portion of government or politics, just as there is no hint of sanity in our current so-called administration. Doesn't exist, cannot be made to co-exist...the right wing fools have destroyed any sense of ethics that existed, and they attack their own when such a thought rises - I refer here to Ms. Collins, senator from Maine who is a brief respite from the insanity.
77
You have heard of Maxine and OneUnited, right Aaron?
The online comments that followed last night's article about William Schaub, Chief Ethics Officer, resigning, were heartening. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/federal-ethics-chief-who-clashed-with-wh...
Ms. Walters brings to mind two very powerful and influential Black politicians, Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan. Our political parties need more of this brand of strong, powerful and self-assured women who act on behalf of their constituents and are not intimidated by the likes of cowardly, misogynist, racist Trump and his cabal of sycophants.
65
Right. Except that Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan were both brilliant. Maxine Waters? Not so much.
20
They're not intimidated by anyone as they're both dead.
2
Something feels racist and misogynist when you compare a black female politician only to other black female politicians, and don't even bother to get her name right.
It's amazing how Trump can get away with his shenanigans with no time-out, but Waters had to stand in the corner.
42
Yes, Ken Boehm. Maxine came out "for impeachment like right at the gate" because the Groper/Liar-in-Chief's horrific personality traits - lying, groping, lying, bullying, lying, colossal lack of ethics, excoriating just about everyone - was quite apparent before he put his hand on the bible. Since then, it's only become worse.
Should we give Trump a chance, as you all so like to say? No, never, he didn't deserve one to begin with. He should be in jail for all of his fraudulent, racist activity and refusal to pay contractors.

Trump employs many lawyers, including the deceased and defamed Roy Cohn. He has been able to skirt the law by settling lawsuits. Hopefully he has hit the wall as president and will finally face the music for a life of crime.

About 10 years ago I read "warrior Don't Cry" about the Little Rock Nine. Shortly after I had the great fortune to meet Minnijean Brown, one fo the Little Rock Nine, and following that Dr. Jocelyn Elders, the first female African American appointed as surgeon general. African American women dominated and continue to dominate my list of idols. Strong, honest, ready to do the right thing, it's hard to describe all of the wonderful qualities these women have. Great idols for me and for my daughters. Welcome Maxine Waters to my list of idols.
16
She's at the bank shareholders meeting so she won't be able to attend your function.
6
You make her sound like President Trump.
YES! We agree with Rep. Waters! We rally behind her- We organize sit-ins and poetry slams because of her- We passionately stand behind her and her message !!! YET- We "THE LIBERAL DEMS" never show up at the polls and vote. And before all the rants.. "What about the 3.3 million popular votes for Hillary!" start flying in- those extra votes were primarily from CA and NY and redundant due to the electoral college. It is going to take every self-professed liberal from every state to move elections and make change. Yes- Poetry slams and drum circles are fun and nice and make great Facebook posts- they serve a cathartic purpose- but nothing is as effective and simple as showing up on election day and voting! That's why the liberals will continue to lose elections! Look beyond the drum circle and protest rally - it doesn't end there!
23
From your mouth to our ears! May it be so! And then: we vote them out!
Thank you, Auntie Maxine. You are an inspiration to our youth who would become public servants!
38
If mad Maxine is the hero of resistance, God save us all. nytimes really tries to undermine her "most corrupt" status - she was awarded that five times, yes, from a left leaning institution. Her daughter was given close to million dollars from campaign distributions for "work". Her campaign manager is her Grandson. And wonder if she lives with poor black neighbors? Her mansion's worth 4.5 million dollars. Please for the love of God, I don't care how much you hate Trump, dont push Maxine as the avatar of selflessness. She is anything but - frankly corrupt politicians like her gave us Donald Trump.
34
Perhaps it would be best, considering how many relatives have jobs in the White House, to not criticize Ms. Waters for the same thing.
4
Agreed. It is a sad sign of our times that we laud as a hero a person with such questionable and corrupt actions, simply because she speaks out loudly against a person who is exponentially corrupt.
At a town hall meeting with my House Rep, Jim Himes, a couple years after the 2008 meltdown, I asked him, "how can I trust you to look out for me when so much of your campaign contributions come from financial institutions?" Without a blush, a stammer, he quickly replied that he must accept these contributions because almost every other representative is, and he didn't want to be left at a disadvantage.
And by the way, I believe that Himes, like Waters, is "one of the good guys." This is the cruel choice we Americans are forced to make.
And therein, folks, lies our problem with corruption.

Most of the Congress is rich and lives well. Waters' voice and advocacy are what is important here.
Seems to be working. Keep it up.
5
I enjoy watching the meetings of the various committed when they are shown on C-SPan. Every time it shows a committee on which Ms. Waters sits, she is always like a fish out of water. She has a loud, irritating voice and never asks questions which are germane to the topic of the meeting. She just rants, and raves about whatever is her hot topic.
21
Love her..she's don't mess around. Wish we had 100 more like her
7
@ Nev Gill--the only one that voted against the Iraq war was Barbara Lee, rep from Oakland CA, not Maxine Waters.
9
Frankly, I wish they'd both disappear!
4
For me, the basis for respect for a politician and public figure is the ability to empathize with those that may be different than you and encounter hardships that you yourself will never encounter.
In this current political climate where empathy seems to not exist, on any level for the Republican party, Maxine Waters is a hero.

Keep it up Maxine!!! You will ensure that Trump is elected to a second term in office.
12
She is a corrupt politician who gets away with it. She ought to be ashamed of herself.
31
Shame doesn't have any effect any more. This is what happens when political expediency rather than morality ,makes strange bedfellows.
4
We all need more like Maxine Waters, and all need to take up the good fight to defeat and remove Monster Mr T before he does us all in.
4
I hope you don't work for a bank that competes fairly with hers.
3
What is she saying that hasn't been pounded into the dirt already?
Calling Trump out as an uncouth bully didn't work in 2016, why would it work in 2020?
The Democratic party needs to do something different.
So far I am seeing more of the same that didn't work.

Yes! Please nominate Maxine! Maybe you can get your boy DeBlasio to run with her. Awesome talent in the Democratic party. Just don't expect to win a lot of elections.

TRUE.

as opposed to trump who is an embarrassment to his country, gender and western democracies everywhere....

"Ms. Waters has also faced fierce criticism from people who see her tone as showboating and disrespectful."
Two of the first adjectives I would think of to describe our so-called President are showboating and disrespectful.
Good for you, Congresswoman Waters. Keep on fighting fire with fire.

Finally!!!!
Democrats need to get over their obsession with moral purity.
People have flaws. Someone who is corrupt can also be beneficial to society, if we (society) wield their power carefully.
She may be controversial, but in today's climate that is what is needed. Cookie cutter candidates that fall in line are useless. We need INDIVIDUALS.

I thought you were talk about Trump.
I am a retired high school teacher. The office manager of my old school is a black woman. (With serious health concerns right now, I'm afraid.)
She has amassed two master's degrees and is working right now on a doctorate. In counseling. She'd be good at counseling. Very good.
In one of those post-graduate classes, she was rebuked by her professor. "The trouble with you," he declared, "the trouble with you is: you're a STRONG BLACK WOMAN." A sobriquet she did nothing to discourage. So she stuck it out--and passed that professor's class. Whatever it was.
A STRONG BLACK WOMAN! Oh I love it! Truly! I love it! I'm an older white male--and I do believe I LOVE strong black women! I really do!
And now--ladies and gentlemen!--and NOW! Voila!
TWO--strong black women! And what I say to Ms. Maxine Waters is--
YOU GO, GIRL! YOU GO!
I think the country could use lots and lots of . . . .um . . .. . . .
. . .strong black women.
I really do. So Maxine--to repeat the age-old question. . . .
. . . are there more at home like you? Bring 'em out. By all means. . . .
. . .bring 'em out. We could use a few right now.
We really could.

The story is well deserved, but I am so disappointed to see that it is a female journalist using "feisty" to describe a powerful female politician. Perhaps Downton Abbey actress Daisy Lewis said it best: "Feisty? My least favourite word. Have you ever heard a man described as feisty?" Noting that Congresswoman Waters gets around quickly in heels just adds more insult to injury. Frankly, I am wondering if that is also an (unintended) ageist comment. Would journalist Yamiche Alcindor note in a story that Paul Ryan, Ted Cruz, John McCain, or Charles E. Schumer are feisty and get around quickly in their shoes of choice??
7
Charles Schumer would start crying for his mommy and scuttle off to his safe space.
1
This is what you nitpick? Your life is that pleasant and boring? If you are part of the Democratic base, Trump will be on our money before long. Why can't you understand that this SJW nonsense is what gave us this guy???
We took a random survey of both neighbors. (Accurate 9 times out of a hundred 10% of the time.) Key results show that Master Negotiator Dinosaur trump thought he could solve:
Healthcare
North Korea
The Middle East
and the Deficit
using his vast understanding of addition and subtraction
He never dreamed he'd be coping with division.

Maxine Waters is a powerhouse. Does my liberal heart good.
4
Why does she need to be "moving fast in heels". Would you ever comment on a male senator "moving fast in loafers". weird
9
She isn't a senator. Before picking a fight, it's a good idea to know what the war is about.
I love you Auntie Maxine!!!!!!

Classic Maxine Waters, Liberal Hero, Quotes:
On the housing GSEs: “We do not have a crisis at Freddie Mac, and particularly Fannie Mae, under the outstanding leadership of Frank Raines.”
On Sequestration: ”If sequestration takes place, that’s going to be a great setback. We don’t need to be having something like sequestration that’s going to cause these job losses — over 170 million jobs that could be lost."
On Trump and Putin: "And the fact that he is wrapping his arms around Putin while Putin is continuing to advance into Korea.”
On the Rodney King riots: "If you call it a riot, it sounds like it was just a bunch of crazy people who went out and did bad things for no reason. I maintain it was somewhat understandable, if not acceptable. So I call it a rebellion."
Oh, and check out her ties to OneUnited. Squeaky clean liberal genius.

For Trumpeteers to accuse Maxine Waters of showboating, grandstanding, and incivility, is just a total hoot. Pot, meet Kettle.
8
Never cared for Waters and her grandstanding and suspect ethics, but right now we need our members of Congress to speak loudly and unequivocally about our disaster of a president, who is a great danger to our country and its standing in the world. The man is clearly not qualified for this office, has no grasp of the issues and has no interest in educating himself. So I say, tell it like it is, Rep. Waters!

I had the pleasure of associating with Maxine Waters when she was a hardworking assemblywoman in California back in the late 1970s.Years later, I and a colleague met with her to talk about a project we were involved in. Maxine Waters was super intelligent, focused, and most of all, gracious and giving, taking time out of her busy day to meet with us. Later, she invited us to go with her into the Capitol building (a great experience) as she voted on a piece of legislation. As we were exiting her office she walked past a young man waiting in her office waiting area. She did a double take and returned to the waiting area and asked the young man "are you waiting for me?" He answered yes. He was her car service driver for the day. She shook his hand, spoke warmly and graciously to him, as if he was one of her constituents or a colleague. No air of superiority. She was welcoming she was to us and to this humble young man. She has a winning personality and is very well suited for her role as Congressperson. If I had half the intellect and personality that Maxine Waters has, I'd be president of some major corporation or a politician.
12
Very questionable ethics when it comes to family members receiving large sums of money who worked on her campaigns.
20
Yeah you have to be like Mitch McConnell and get your wife a job in the current administration then your fine, right? Based on all the Politicians I know it looks like a Family business to me. What is your point?
6
I like Maxine Waters - She is fierce and fearless. That is what we need. She represents her constituents well and they love her. I wish my Representative was this vocal. She is authentic. That's good enough for me.
7
Brava, Maxine Waters! I only wish there were more of you. I agree with Cory Booker. Keep speaking your truth.
8
Grandstanding won't change anything about the reality we face. Preaching to the choir won't change hearts and minds, it's playing to the crowd.
Democrats need a platform which helps the middle class, represents hope for the future, and has bright new faces. The same old leaders doing the same old thing is just... old and ineffective.
This kind of behavior might make the choir feel better but it changes nothing.

Chris in SF -
I disagree. It raises morale, and higher morale means greater involvement. Words and demeanor matter, and the best way to deal with a bully like Trump is to stand up to him from the start. I've had my problem with Mrs. Waters over the years, but I am behind her 100% in this matter.

Don't follow leaders and watch your parking meters.
Do you actually know what platform the Democratic Party actually had during the 2016 election?

"Ms. Waters has also faced fierce criticism from people who see her tone as showboating and disrespectful. Over July 4 weekend, after Ms. Waters warned that when Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson testified before her committee, she would take him apart, Kyle Morris, a conservative college journalist, accused her of inciting violence."
I wonder if Mr. Kyle Morris had anything to say regarding the nooses that were found on a college campus recently after an African-American woman was elected head of student government?

Those were being prepared for President Trump's lynching without trial.
Thank God for Ms. Waters. Thank God someone in congress has integrity and is screaming at the top of her lungs that Donald Trump has placed the USA in a state of emergency and that it is time for everyone to wake up and join her in her courageous fight.
8
Vainly opportunistic at best, Kathy Griffinesque at worst.
4
That's what you got? Kathy Griffin? I don't say this often but...LOL!!!
2
Do you even know what vainly opportunistic means? How about Maxine Waters is a hypocritical crook that, except for political crimes of the most heinous sort by a muzzled Justice Department under orders from the White House, should be locked up in jail for bribery and influence peddling.
Maxine Waters is an example of a strong unafraid woman. She is articulate, and she will persist. Other strong women have influenced the political scene....Merkle, Golda Meir, Margaret Thatcher, but not in the US. Silence is an enemy of the people, and Waters is smart enough to know it. She speaks truth
that others refuse to hear. Thank you Ms. Waters.
that others refuse to hear. Thank you Ms. Waters.
6
Loved the article! Have been enjoying her fiery remarks since the election and I'm glad to know more about her.
4
Anyone who doesn't recognize Maxine Waters as a complete hypocrite without principles is just naive. What has she ever done substantively for her constituents? Nothing. She panders to her minority base with lots of talk to garner votes, but nothing else. Meanwhile, she doesn't even live in her district. Rather, she lives elsewhere in a luxurious home - no doubt paid for with the proceeds of her husband trading off her name and position. Wake up minority voters! As long as you continue to elect the likes of Waters and most others in the Congressional Black Caucus, you will never achieve political power and you will be "played" in perpetuity.
28
And who, exactly, do you think has minority voters' interests at heart if Maxine Waters doesn't?
4
You mean how rich white Republicans play the religious and bias of the white "christian" base for fun and profit? Wake up poor white voters, Rush Limbaugh and Fox News are laughing at you all the way to the bank and the Whitehouse.
5
Yes, look at how well her district is doing.
Mr. Trump, start running, Auntie Maxine is coming, or take out your wrestling gloves that you used to tackle CNN. She is very tough, be careful!
6
If Ms. Waters is so supportive of the poor she should volunteer her time and part of her salary towards helping homeless people. I think she likes the sound bites from CNN and other media outlets. I honestly her talents could also be used in working as a volunteer in a soup kitchen.
7
Opposition is crucial now; our democracy depends on it. But ad hominem attacks by Waters and others merely inflame Trump's supporters and amount to more wheel-spinning. We know that he's a liar, incompetent, impetuous, dangerous. What we need is a plan of action.
117
JR, as a plan of action, how about opposing Trump, as Ms. Waters does? Not only with rhetoric; when you see the Democrats' leadership considering a compromise with the greedy bigots running the GOP, she will be voting "No".
3
sounds presidential 2020?
1
Waters appears to be more and more unhinged.
Her strident tone is unwelcome in a nation that needs reconciliation instead of more division.

23
"Barbed tongue" "feisty" How about strong, aggressive, dogged?
5
I never thought The NYT would adopt Auntie Maxine as a role model. This new management must be something!
7
The hardest working woman in politics.
8
One of the hardest-working Members of Congress.
1
For who?
5
Hard work and Congress do not belong in the same sentence.
What this country needs is term limits for Congress. Quite frankly I've had more than enough of Maxine Waters and Mitch McConnell.

For years, Waters was like the elderly relative that blurts out embarrassing anachronisms at the family Thanksgiving dinner. But in todays hysterical political climate, even rank and file Democrats are willing to give audience to the cranks, crazies and tin foil hat wearers. The left used to rightfully chastise the GOP for not slapping down the so called Birthers. Now they are seeking the comfort food of quack remedies, like letter writing campaigns to the Electoral College, having the Senate approve the Garland nomination at 12:01 PM on Inauguration Day and removing the President via the 25th Amendment. Following Waters is like following The Stork in Animal House, it seems like a lot of fun now, but it leads to a dead end.
16
Only if you have a grip on reality.

A 2020 dream ticket:
Maxine Waters and Bernie Sanders.

In the last primary,Hillary had my head, Bernie my heart.
The problem is 1) Sanders is a Democratic Socialist, and the image of a follower of Herbert Marcuse running for office in a land where the grand idea of employees owning a business larger than a mom'n'pop store wont fly.
Reason 1) Older folks vote more often than younger ones do - and the Boomers represent the single largest bloc of voters right now.
2) They were indoctrinated in school, and oft at home by the "Silents" of the late 40s early 50s to regard Herb's Democratic Socialist. Organizing Committee as just another form of Communism, the Great Evil all run by the ruthless Joe Stalin - Ruthless and murderous are what I would still call him, but NO DSOC'er or LID or good-guy anarchosyndicalist let employees decide how the company runs type.
And the central philosopher/economist is 40 years dead, as is the US student movement, which fought the good fight against bigotry and fora better New Deal, but was really centered around the Draft - which meant you or your significant other stood a good chance of death in a war you saw absolutely no reason to risk your life at National Guard hands.
....And once I was young and impulsive/Did every conceivable sin/Even went to socialist meetings/Learned all the old union hymns/But now I am older and wiser(?)/So I voted the rich madman In ... apologies to Phil Ochs - May the Gen Xers remember the DK's version and save us.

P.S.
A few years ago, Representative Waters was subjected to an ethics investigation.
When will Trump and the crew from his family who came to D.C. with him get theirs?

She was indeed subject to ethics investigation- and was cleared.
Speaking of ethics and being cleared - WHERE ARE THOSE TAX RETURNS ? (why don't you care ? what is he hiding ?)

Keep up the fight Maxine Waters! Wish there were more like you.

"Ms. Waters, once deemed “one of the most corrupt members of Congress”....."
Well, if there is one thing we have all learned from the election of Trump, it is that background matters little these days in Washington. Resisting Trump requires a full-court press and I have no problem enlisting the help of Ms. Waters.

Your selective morality puts you in good company with Mad Maxine and her nephew Satan.
4
Oh for heavens sake. Like this isn't complicated (and important) enough without invoking satan?
2
Nothing but love for Maxine!
14
Bashing the individuals in the opposition is easy and gets a rise out of people.
But in the end, the DEMs need to understand the needs of voters, offer meaningful policies that improve Americans' lives, and communicate those policies to them effectively.
I'm not convinced that vilifying Trump (as villainous as he may be) is the way to bring back the roughly 13% of Obama voters who voted for him.

9
Its too bad she aligned with Mrs. Clinton. Can you imagine the traction she would have had with Mr. Sanders? She could have been Vice President.
1
“Democrats need to be less poll-tested, less consultant-advised, and they need to speak from their gut and speak from their heart and be fearless, unapologetic and defiant like she is,” Mr. Booker said. That is the bitter truth.
12
Unbought and un-bossed should be our rallying cry for ALL elected officials.
17
Yes, and the fools that believe a word they say.
2
Our country would benefit from more elected officials with Ms. Waters' intelligence and determination. She understands the needs of the disenfranchised and under-represented. We are as strong as the least of us, and Ms. Waters' life work is to lift the least of us up.
11
Add me to that list of people who love Ms. Waters. She's a rare politician -one who displays real courage.
10
I have little respect for US Rep. Waters, and I regret she is the face of the anti-Trump movement in California.
19
Go for it. We need all the help we can get!
10
love you, Auntie Maxine!!!
7
I love her.
7
Only way to confront Trump is to use the same language he uses.
Republicans going for Presidency in their primaries did not understand that hoping being civil was the right way to confront him. Trump understands the foul language and will respect those who use it. That is a standard definition of a coward

Go Maxine! We love you.

Readers note: The phrase used by Sen. Cory Booker to describe Congress woman Waters, "unbought and unbossed," was first applied to seven term, New York (Brooklyn) Rep. Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman to mount a serious bid for President, an immigrant's daughter. The phrase was also the title of her best selling autobiography.
147
Thank you for clearing this up. Representative Chisholm was a model that every politician should try to emulate and richly deserving of the praise. Ms. Waters on the other hand is a long running, sad comment on the sometimes fallible nature of the electoral process.
6
"I was going to not only challenge him but encourage others to see him for what he is: basically a bully, an egotistical maniac, a liar and someone who did not need to be president."
"…what he is…" is the point that many in the mainstream media and elsewhere are missing, or dancing around. What he is, is mentally ill. The bully, egotist, etc., are merely symptoms of that illness. So Maxine has it right about how he behaves, but needs to nail down the underlying cause, his sickness.

How richly ironic, or something. So it's OK for the president to spew coarse, mindless bile that sullies the dignity of the office and endangers the stature of our country in the world, not to mention advancing the Doomsday clock--and hey, his supporters see that as strength--but if a black woman dares ... well, what's the loaded word I'm looking for? Get sassy? Uppity? Nooo, can't have that, that's unbecoming.

Yes, where was Morris when then-candidate Trump spoke about "shooting people on Fifth Avenue"? Did he complain about that statement by a conservative inciting violence? I doubt it.
3
Noisy attacks and stale arguments in politics and journalism are an expected response to rising uncertainty. They are also useless, uninspiring and unnecessarily contentious. when you don't understand the problem say so and start asking questions not assigning blame.
2
So two wrongs make a right? Stupidity is color blind, so is selective morality.
4
If only all politicians in Washington had the guts that Ms. Waters does! They are going to need them by 2018.
540
You go, girl I'm with you and so are many others. We need more people who aren' afraid to remind us how bad politics has become. 2018 is coming!
6
Radical Liberal Democrats like 'Auntie Maxine" and Hillary Clinton are the reason Trump won. Let's hope she keeps it up and we elect Trump for a second term in office.
7
AMEN! God Bless Ms. Waters
This is all great. But now it is time for all enlightened Democrats to craft a message instead of simply fighting.
Some ideas: "The Democrats respect you and want to help you live your best life by fighting greed." Or "The Democrats believe government should enable people to live well, not cause financial hardship."
These aren't that good, but can someone please come up with something?

We need more people like Maxine Waters, who give up on "political correctness" when it comes to Trump (as Trump has boasted he is doing), and call out this "putrid human being" for what he is, an embarrassment to the United States, likely to cause great harm to the US and the world.
521
We need more people like Maxine Waters....
Don't worry, we have them. Fortunately, they are confined for their safety and the safety of others.

8
True, look at what comes out of the woodwork to try and lynch him. Putrid.
Wish the NYTimes would have noted that for all her years in the House she has very little to show for it. Yes, she is vocal, but you have to do more than talk. You have to get bills authored and passed that will do more than give lip service to those in ones district.
How is getting hefty campaign donations from the securities and investment and insurance industries helping your constituents and not just oneself?

121
Beth--I wonder if being black has been a problem for her, as far as getting legislation passed? Hmmm.
7
"Very little to show for it"? Have you seen her house?
11
No one is forcing her constituents to vote her in again and again. They must think she is doing something right. Voting against the Iraq war is good enough for me.

To this article I exclaim "YAAASSS!!! Get it Auntie!"
Let me elaborate...In Black culture, calling someone your cousin, sister, brother or your aunt is a term of respect and endearment. It means that person has your best interest at heart, like a family member. This woman has been fighting for working class people in her district for over 20 years now like she was family. And I pray she continues on.
Maxine Waters is a rare breed - a Black Woman who remembers how it use to be and will not allow those times to return upon all of us. An approving nod given to Cory Booker for that Shirley Chisolm quote (another shero politician from back in the day).
There is nothing more determined, and to some more dangerous than a Black Woman with a mission and a mouth. We call out what others whisper in secret. And its that public calling out that calls others to support the cause and chastise the wrong being done against those they defend.
Bill O'Reilly picked the wrong fight with the right woman and by default showed the rest of the Democrats THIS is how you handle bully politics. Shove it right back at them and force them to have several seats in a corner until they can comport themselves like reasonable adults. Nothing else will work.
It's not showboating. It's not grandstanding. It's holding people accountable to do the job they were elected or hired to do. Plain and simple.

You my Sister!
5
She is one of the most divisive lawmaker in Washington. She is arrogant and prejudice and certainly has no credibility in my eyes. She needs to get over her IMPEACHMENT movement and RETIRE . It is getting totally tiring listening to these democrats causing all this turmoil and hate rhetoric. Maybe dems need to think of helping ALL Americans not just the indigent; after all we pay their benefits. Stop this obstruction and start working together or GET OUT.
10
Barbara Lee speaks for me.
Maxine Waters has had an illustrious career making waves in politics but the time has come for her to go. Like John McCain, her often confused-sounding and cringeworthy rants make her sound unhinged and unfit for office. As a fellow Angelino I am embarrassed that we cant come up with a better representative, but being in the lions den of Democrat corruption this doesnt really surprise me.
61
Shame Sam! Without the likes of John McCain and Maxine Waters who's well respected years of wisdom bring important perspective and continuity, Congress would be nothing more than a daycare facility for middle aged white male lawyers.
And did I read you correctly in comparing anyone to Trump's confused cringe-worthy unhinged rants and questioning others being fit for office?
Double shame! Listen to your elders, lest you make the grave mistake of believing you know everything. Your attempt to make an argument for a 'political death panel' is misplaced.

If you don't yet understand or respect the amount of corruption from the Republicans, you either aren't doing your homework or are emotionally tied up with their message. Neither side is perfect, but take the plunge and realize that just about every word out of the Republican leadership in the last six months is deceptive and harmful. You and I will feel the damage they have inflicted soon enough. It is better to be aware than gullible.
10
The video of Ms. Waters that I saw was more cogent and hard hitting than most else I've seen besides Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Perhaps you just don't like what she has to say?
11
Yes Maxine. Let us plan a march on Washington demanding his resignation. he is a threat to our national security. No joke!
256
Oh yeah, all the marches on DC have yielded so much fruit.....lol
10
How about you stay home and organize and register voters.
Every "march on Washington" is a failure before it even starts. If you want to stand in a great big circle and sing Kumbaya, knock yourself out.
But don't mistake that for action that actually makes change.

The only one that voted against the war in Iraq under President Bush. She was right, everybody else didn't have the courage to say so at the time. Now everybody is scrambling to explain their spineless positions and how the WMD magically disappeared with "mispoke" or "untruths".
