Donald Trump is tearing this country apart by doing these decisions. I understand that there needs to be a precaution toward possible terrorists and other dangers but when families are being torn apart from ever seeing each other, that is where our president is treading some murky waters. Family is one of the few things that we as human beings have in this world and when our grandparents, uncles and aunts and cousins are not considered family, it really makes the lives of many people a lot worse. Some people develop better relationships with their grandparents and cousins than their own parents and brothers or sisters and this extension to this travel ban is not helping people that are trying to survive in this world. The travel ban has not been easy to middle eastern people and separating what they hold dearest to them is not helping their harsh situation. The United States is about acceptance of others, the freedom and equal rights for everyone and when our president is breaking those ideals and basically attacking a whole race in order to protect a country is something that not everyone is willing to support or accept but it is a double-sided sword and not everyone will be pleased as this world shares vastly different opinions. The ban of middle eastern people or take the chance of being attacked by terrorists? A very tough decision that only the people of the United States can make.
Before I read this article, I was curious about why Donald Trump said that grandparents are not 'Close Family'. In fact, Donald Trump prohibited six Muslim countries which are Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen to enter the United States, because of safety, while stepsiblings and half-siblings will be allowed. Not only grandparents will be banned, but also nices or nephews will be prohibited. In my opinion, I do not think that it is not that good idea because prohibition of entering countries can be unfair to the others. Even though, some of people who from Muslim countries terrorized a lot, it cannot be perspective for other people who from same country.
we will never know about all the people the travel ban saved us from. never. it can't be counted. that's why it's so easy to jump on trump and complain about him. you can't say.. see, here is such and such, and there are 5 others over here.. they never came into our country. you think we can find this out.. and no doubt there will be documentaries later on talking about these things.. but for all the ones we do "know about.." whatever that means.. there will always be 10 fold more that we have no idea even existed. presidents have to do things like this. and grateful and righteous citizens realize it is necessary. those who are obstructionists obstruct. thank God their obstruction is now obstructed itself.
I picked this article because to me it is intriguing that President Trump would choose to exclude grandparents from a list of direct family, as he includes other equidistant members of the family as allowable. Trump is in a difficult position as he is attempting to make all parties in the situation happy. As any situation, there are those who strongly agree and disagree. There have been less direct bans of the past, however, Trump's ban gets more attention and publicity because of the way he uses the ban with hateful emotion. I think such laws increase the animosity between people. There have been bans of the past but they have been overlooked as they were not as publicized by authorities. Trump is bringing attention and his hatred is evident in the ban. He is making some exceptions in the ban to ease the opposition however the travel ban should be revised and Trump needs to act more politically correct and less opinionated in his law making decisions to gain respect.
I feel as though the law was not thought through well at all. Refugees need help they don't come to party and ruin the government. The fact that grandparents don't have the ability to be freed from the tragedies of war in their country to see their families in America is wrong. They could have family and be able to prove they have family but yet they cannot come the same as a brother in law comes is sad. The government says the law isn't racist but I do believe it is and I understand the law for racist people who believe that muslims and Mexicans are bringing us down but in all honesty as the article said no attacks from Muslim since 1995 I hope that someway they take the law away and think it through a little more but going at this rate if we didn't have a Muslim attack situation we will soon.

The terrorist ban is very effective. Just saying the name Trump is forcing terrorists and their backers to think twice before entering our country.
1
Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran’s foreign minister, condemned the administration’s move. “U.S. now bans Iranian grandmothers from seeing their grandchildren, in a truly shameful exhibition of blind hostility to all Iranians,” he tweeted.
Iran's foreign minister is right. Our so-called president is morally wrong.
And this is just one example.

The travel ban includes grandparents solely because Obama's children were cared for by theirs.

President Trump's persistent efforts efforts to ban Muslims from entering the United States is not unprecedented. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, the US Government refused to allow Jews fleeing Hitler, to disembark in American ports. The SS St. Louis incident is the best known example. Much later, an American film was made called "The Ship of Fools", based on the St. Louis.
When certain Governments need enemies to distract their public from domestic policies, minority religions and ethnic minorities are readily available. Then it was Jews, today it's Muslims and tomorrow??

I am an American Muslim, and I denounce this EO of President Trump. Mr Trump has hatred for a lot of people, but Muslims are targeted for special HATRED. Essentiall Mr Trump HATES all those not as rich as himself, those who are destitute (mostly through American military action or through the action of its surrogates, e.g. Saudi Arabia, Britain, etc). I pray for the liberation of America from the Gospel of HATRED and Mammon that Mr Trump is following.
Latin scholars, forgive me, but just as we have an easily recognizable common mock President, we have this easily recognizable mock Latin phrase: Illegitimi non carborundum.
But Trump is wearing us down. Yesterday's story on this dastardly move brought outrage via hundreds of comments deploring Trump's evil, ignorant, racist and yes, powerful behavior.
Today, readers are tired of the grandmother story, and having spoken their piece, have moved on.
We can't move on, and thus allow this illegitimate President to destroy all that is decent in the United States.

from the article:
"Parents, including in-laws, are considered “close family,” but grandparents are not, for instance"
While this was obviously published by the Times to ridicule Trump, in the United States, the claim that grandparents are not close relatives is pretty much on target.
Want proof? Go to a nursing home on the weekend, and see how many grandchildren are visiting their grandparents.
Way too much press is being given to Trump's idiocy and foul manners, and not nearly enough attention is being paid to the damaging policies of the Republican Party. Remember, most Republicans, including Pence, are far to the right of Trump.
In the circus of American Politics, the clown isn't the Ringmaster. His only job is to create a diversion, while the Big Elephants stomp our country. Don't fall for this ruse.

Mean-spirited or not, something needs to be done to curb not only terrorism, but also overwhelming immigration into the US. This is just a start. I personally don't want the US to end up like Europe with its problems ...
Why cant the US pay another country more closely associate in culture and religion, to take in these refugees ? Learn from the mistakes of France, the UK...
After All, we currently pay third world countries to let us dump our toxic waste in their countries. Same principle

With a gerrymandered Supreme Court ahead we are all set for more of the sloppy downward national spiral of the right's urging, the literal end of the brightest American epoch. We must get the White House back. My hope is Kamala.
I don't think this has anything to do with Vetting dangerous visitors. It is just another example of Trump's relentlessness. He is a winner, no matter what it takes.
Over and over through history this has been the story of oppressors.
He uses money and the law to overwhelm the system. I have to think that the courts just got tired of his badgering and figured they would give him something to shut him up.
How many times have many of us opposed an action we considered dangerous to our communities, and had it overturned, and the next year the same permits or amendments are up for vote again, often on a Friday night or whenever is convenient for the oppressor. It may take years, but their dogged pursuit often trumps our right mindedness.
We on the left think we should be proud of our activism. I agree. But in the long run, he, like so many before him, will not give up. And many of us will just get used to the noise or overwhelmed by the stress of it all.
I pray that i am wrong.

If we are required to allow any in, we certainly do not need the eldest, weakest and most useless to add to the mess we already have permitted to enter!

glad I'm not your relative...

Haha. Does this mean they want to be kicked out themselves after they get too old..?
I bet Trump is very proud of his grandfather.
Fredrick Trump immigrated to USA from Bavaria, Germany. Initially trying to make it in NYC he subsequently in 1891 he relocated to Seattle, Washington. Establishing a house of prostitution.
According to a biography, Located at 208 Washington Street, the Dairy Restaurant was in the middle of Seattle’s Red Light District; Washington Street was nicknamed "the Line" and included an assortment of saloons, casinos, and brothels. Blair, the biographer, called it "a hotbed of sex, booze, and money, [it] was the indisputable center of the action in Seattle."[3]:41 The restaurant served food and liquor and was advertised to include "Rooms for Ladies", a common euphemism for prostitution.
Apple does not fall far from the tree.

It is clear DT never experienced the love, caring and real concern that grandparents bring to their grandchildren.
1
The President ought to spend more time learning what a grandparent is and less time tweeting about TV people. Shocking and disgraceful behavior

Here we go again with one of the most counterproductive measures that an administration can do. It is clear that barring people from entering the country will not magically mean security, this is done by analizing and identifying possible treaths and risks and maje the appropiate assesments, anyway this is another sign of the divorce between reality and society that this government has
The Trump administration is going to get the ban blocked again by circumventing the Supreme Court's decision.
1
Not only un-American and very mean spirited, this ban could actually have the unintended consequence of inciting terrorists attacks within the US border as retaliation for the meanness. Really low -IQ-stupid .
3
Banning grandparent travel may be explained by a genetic susceptibility to experience love.
2
The exclusion of grandparents is deplorable. But, since 45 doesn't value women past the age of 35 or so, maybe he thinks grandmas aren't important.
1
Arbitrary distinctions are made in the law all of the time---why are 18 year olds (but not 17 1/2 year olds) allowed to vote, but not allowed to drink alcohol until 21 ? Why does Social Security start at age 65 and not 64 ? Because you have to draw the line somewhere.
I am appalled by Trump's attack on family values, and what family means. As a grandfather myself, I cannot comprehend the disparagement of the grandparent-grandchild relationship that the Administration has embodied in official U.S. Government policy, and I am disgusted by that disparagement. Shame on Trump, and shame on those who have opined that such disparagement is legally permissible under the Supreme Court's order. Each of you has brought dishonor to the United States.

Parents are okay, but grandparents are not. Reactionaries need to calm down. This is how a family tree works: Grandparents, then parents, then children.
Depending on who is making the application, grandparents should be fine as long as they are the *parents* of the person in the application. The children of the current resident should also be fine.

“With some of these countries, we would take issue certainly with the government of Iran, and some of the nations there can be concerns,” she said. “And the American public could have legitimate concerns about their safety when we open our doors. And we want to open our doors to people who are willing to go through proper screening measures and who want to be here and want to be productive members of our society.”
Still no sign of a report on any evaluation of the vetting process in existence on 1-20-17 or any new vetting standards 6 months in. What happened to "extreme vetting"?
I think the SCOTUS has intentionally or not, let the Trump folks have enough rope to show us the true intent and effect of the EO's in question.

This latest policy is yet another reminder that the GOP loves money, not people. Gutting health care and promising tax cuts to the rich are other recent examples.
After 160 years, Republicans are reverting back to the Whig Party.

If I understand this correctly, Granny might be a jihadist but not a son in law.

If grandparents are not "close family" then what are Melania's parents doing in the White House? Please do not tell us we are paying for them to be there to help take care of Barron!
4
The Supreme Court allowed him to craft this vague, confusing enforcement. If and when they "revisit" this case, the confusion and damage he will have created might have consequences they didn't anticipate.
Yes, a Syrian 80-year old grandmother, fleeing either the butchery of Assad or the raw evil of ISIS or both, is clearly a far greater security risk to our nation than a Commander-in-Chief who deliberately denies and ignores cyberattacks from a major advisory that is trying to destabilize our democracy and the boarder global democratic liberal world order. More narrowly, the husband of someone's step daughter from the 6 targeted countries - the ones where the citizens originating form those countries have killed a total of ZERO Americans on American soil as a terrorist act EVER (as opposed to those with roots from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan, Jordan - all our allies - that have supplied terrorists that have killed in US) - is more dangerous than grandparents. Accurately reflects Trump values - 5 kids from 3 wives, vulgar misogynistic cyber bully, coward and snowflake, ignorant, fear and hate mongerer targeting liberals, and all non-white, non-Christian Americans. We all support more thorough and effective vetting, just not stupid policies that deliberately target the wrong people to inflame the problem instead of real solutions.
5
Should Trump be concerned that Barron is being raised by his mother's parents?
2
Truly? Grandparents are not close relationships? Maybe we should deport trump's kids and grandkids and leave him behind...or vice versa and see how he'd like it?
2
So grandparent's aren't close relatives but fiances are?? That makes no sense since engagements are reversible and easily faked.
Although this is all besides the point since "bona fide" relationship is not equivalent to close family relationship.
Everything has to be a fight with Trump. He couldn't just take the "win" such as it is. Instead he has to draw a very narrow definition of bona fide relationship to ensure legal challenges

This is a capricious ban that makes no sense that has nothing to do with security. If there was real concern about security Saudi Arabia would be at the top of the list because it not only funds terrorism, but exports Wahhabism which is taught in Saudi funded Madrassas around the world. These Madrassas promote extremism, especially in countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan, which were security the guiding principle, would be on the list. This is nothing more than a racist attempt to call out Muslims here and around the world and make them other. This is an old trick used by dictators everywhere. Divide and conquer, as old as time.
1
The Un-Supreme Court does it again. When are we going to get rid of this bunch of mostly right-wing part-timers?
“Allowing a U.S. citizen to bring their Syrian mother-in-law but not their Syrian brother-in-law doesn’t make us any safer, and doesn’t even really make any sense,” said Gadeir Abbas, a staff lawyer at the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
Considering the preponderance of terrorists are male, actually that particular example does make sense.
Considering the preponderance of terrorists are male, actually that particular example does make sense.
This ban makes no sense and it's totally un-American and cruel. Isn't it bad enough that we're rounding up tens of thousands of immigrants to deport those deemed here illegally, and in the process, breaking up families. Now we plan to prohibit even visits from, say, grandparents or cousins of fellow Americans because they happen to be Muslims and from 6 countries on our so-called terror list, despite the fact that there have been zero terrorist attacks from Iran and others on the list. As for banning refugees, just how heartless and low can we get? Thank god for Canada and the many other countries that are more welcoming than the US.
3
Trump's Muslim Ban (please, it's not a travel ban, it's a Muslim ban) is idiotic, obnoxious, and worthless. Most terrorists in America are white Christian men, unaffected by this ban. Most terrorists from abroad would find a way around it. The ban doesn't affect Saudi Arabia at all, a major exporter of terrorism and a major financial backer of Trump.
So not only is this entirely useless, it's also directly opposed to what America stands for. Trump is the child of immigrants himself, like nearly every other American. Immigration is what our nation is basically all about, and how it came to be so powerful.
Thus this is one of the biggest reasons I see Trump as an enemy of democracy and America, and I pray every day for his swift downfall. The only thing that can restore my faith in my country is Trump being removed from office, and ideally jailed for life.

Does the Travel Ban exclude grandparents because they may be close to using public services like Medicare, Medicaid, meals on wheels, etc.? Wouldn't surprise me.
2
After further research by merely googling "Who can I sponsor as an immigrant?" the list generated for the travel ban is nearly identical to who an American citizen or green card holder can sponsor to immigrate into the US for family reunification. (Perhaps NYT already has a reporter working on this for the Sunday edition.) Fact is no one can sponsor their grandparents to immigrate unless there are exceptional circumstance, such as the parents are dead and the grandparents raised the petitioner.
And just to add, five of the six countries have no central government that can provide legitimate criminal background checks or vital documents such as birth and marriage certificates which are required for the visa process. The opportunities for identity fraud are rife, let alone the possibility that a terrorist cell could slip in on these countries' documents. The sixth country, Iran, is an avowed state sponsor of terrorist groups.
Commenter Slavin put it very elegantly!
Obama brought his mother-in-law into the White House as the caretaker for the kids which is so intelligent both in terms of emotion and stability.
Grandparents (and I'm one) are a genuine necessity! They're fun, they're sane and they are unendingly affectionate (at least the ones I know are).
Its getting to the point where I am terrified to read the news or turn on the TV news because I'll be confronted with the next batch of embarrassing outbursts. Please, somebody keep his tiny hands off of his Twitter toys.

Grandparents can be such extreme radicals. ^)

The definition of a US entity is not clear. Are Green Card holders and individuals on student or work visa considered US entities and thus allowed to petition for their relatives for immigrant or visitor visas?
We have to return the Statue of Liberty to France. Or, at least cover her face for shame. We are not that country anymore.
How ironic that it's a Republican (the party of less government) government that is now defining the limits of a bona fide family.

Bannon: You know, my favorite puppet...ummm....I mean President Trump, The President of The United States, yes, you are President. We know that people say that grandparents can be important to them. But I'm wondering what you think, Mr. President? What do you think about banning grandparents? You think that's a good idea, Mr. President? You are the best president ever, by the way. You are amazing. The work you are doing...amazing, Mr. President. So, do you think banning grandparents is a good idea? You are so great, the work you are doing is amazingly great.
Trump: I am great. I am the best. I am doing great and amazing things! Whatever you say, Steve...you always tell me nothing but the truth. Whatever you think about grandparents and banning...whatever...let's do it.

Grandmothers in many cultures are the care givers for the family. They are in the home taking care of children while parents work. They are the center that connects adult siblings and other family members. This ban make no sense for a country with a Conservative party that pretends family values are important.
Further, if Quatar is supporting terrorists how is it not on this list? Guess that air base makes a difference. In that case the Saudis should be on the list since the air base had to be moved from Arabia because of a deadly terrorist attack.

I am not quite sure what the Supreme Court was thinking when they left the interpretation of their directive in the hands of a president who does not respect the Constitution. By failing to take a stronger stand, the Justices in effect temporarily overturned the decisions of the lower courts. In doing so, they have conveniently washed their hands of any responsibility for terrorist acts that might occur between now and their hearing the case. They have "temporarily" compromised the spirit of our democracy by allowing the enactment of a racist and politically driven agenda. They have undermined the very constitution that they are supposed to defend.
3
Of course they've already had plenty of time to evaluate the vetting of people from these countries. That is, it would have been enough if they had staffed the disintegrating State Department. Starting the clock on 120 days now, and you can be sure when the time is up, they won't have evaluated a thing. It's abundantly clear what the real purpose is. C'mon Supreme Court, open your eyes.
2
For many people grandparents are essential care-givers, especially in places where mortality rates are high for the parental generation. In parts of Africa it is grandmothers who are raising small children after the parents have died due to disease, war and wage migration. This is sometimes true in developed countries too, where parents are no longer part of the picture. It can be due to death, abandonment, imprisonment or just simply work hours and deployment (as in military families). To claim they are not close relatives is incorrect, morally indefensible and simply incomprehensible. Sounds like the president doesn't it!
5
What an asinine decree! The whole thing is a farce by the Trump Administration to play to their base. It was supposed to be an emergency ban. That time has come and gone.
Don't the people implementing this ban have grandparents, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles and cousins whom they love?

Simply mean spirited!! For decades we as a nation welcomed people to our shores. Now that Trump is president, he and those around him have taken HATE into the Oval Office!
3
Somebody please explain to me why, 150 days the Trump administration requested an emergency 90/120 ban on immigrants and refugees so a study could be completed, they still need the ban for something that should have been complted long ago (especially on time and under budget)? Undertaking the study was an emergency measure right? It was certainly undertaken and completed by now, right? What am I missing?
22
Because with the authorizing legislation blocked by the court, the 90/120 day period did not start.
Try to follow the news. When the Federal courts deemed Trump's executive actions were illegal, they made it also illegal for the Trump administration to conduct the 90 day evaluation of the adequacy of the vetting process. What you are missing is that the Trump administration complied with the courts orders despite the fact that the courts were acting in a way that was unconstitutional. The Ninth circuit and SCOTUS just gave the Trump administration permission last week to conduct their evaluation of the vetting process. As that evaluation takes place, there is a good chance that new restrictions will be put in place.
SCOTUS is planning to explore the merits of the case when their new term begins in October. At that time, one would expect that they will address the subsequent lawsuits that will erupt from their present ruling.
What you missed was the egregious behavior of the federal courts in preventing the executive branch from even evaluating the process for admitting aliens to the country.

Hi. I'm not positive about this. But I think the issue in the courts has always been the President's authority to issue the ban in the first place. So, whether or not the 120 or 60 days has passed or whether the government has done the analyzing it wanted to do is not what matters in the law suits. Maybe the government will say it's done the analyzing and it's ending the ban and so the cases should be dismissed. But what if the government says its done the analyzing and is keeping the ban and making it even more strong? In the end, the issue of the President's authority has to be decided. I admit I'm predicting from my armchair.
1
For the life of me, I cannot imagine the anguish on both sides of the great waters that separate the US from so many parts of the world - a grandchild reaching for a long loved grandparent, a grandparent reaching out to unmet grandchildren left to stew in a refugee camp or at peril in a combat zone. All because of the finale finger of fate that placed them there and Donald in th Oval. Imbecilic.Horrific. Anti-American.
19
Or a grandparent who has or will be care giver of grandchildren, or a grandparent that needs assistance for basic living needs, or a grandparent who is the 'parent ' due to ravages of war....I guess in the last scenario neither children nor grandparent is welcome.
3
Did you read the article? A parent (of the legal immigrant) is considered a close family member. It is the great grandparent - great grandchild relationship that is threatened. Or are you honestly saying Each child should be allowed to bring in 2 parents AND 4 grandparents on the child's own basis? And what about those great grandparents affected by this ban? 8 of them right. Anything else? Free house?
Really? I "lost" my mother to mental illness and addiction from a young age. My grandmother was the only maternal figure I knew. Many people have the same experiences. One who comes to mind is Barack Obama. Grandparents have enormous positive influences on children and young adults, having had the time and wisdom to learn from mistakes.
34
Is this not temporary? How many people will this affect over the next 120 days?
4
Where to start? I wonder that more isn't made in the media of the fact that no one from countries Trump does business with is banned, and that historically terrorists have not come from the banned countries.
21
Why don't Grandparents qualify? This entire farce is a train wreck that just keeps producing unnecessary victims. What about our prior vetting was insufficient? I've never heard of an answer to that question...
This effort will do much more harm than it will ever do to provide national security. It will, however, placate those who voted in platitudes and gross conduct and incompetency instead of real solutions and experience.

9
When you emigrate to a new country, would you really expect them to welcome your grandparents? Why or why not? Even accepting parents is considerably generous.
1
Saudi Arabia, who supplied 15 or more 9/11 terrorists, is not included. Trump has large business interests there. Could that be a huge co-incidence?
26
