North Korea Missile Test Was Short on Distance but Long on Data, South Says

North Korea’s tests are the topic of the day but the message is being missed: “It’s time to talk.”
The negotiations surrounding the topic of disarmament have fallen out of the news as progress stalled but Kim and company have certainly raised it again.
Without background studies it is uncertain to say why no progress made, but a good hunch is that American policy makers were not going to yield to such an insignificant as the existing leader of Pyongyang. Pres. Trump has said he will meet with Kim, and the news media exploded with criticism but his offer could be ‘enlightened’ if it gets the topic of N.K. security back on the table.
Let’s stick to the issues and forget the theatrics for the sake of the planet.

NK does not need long-range missiles with nuclear warheads for defense: its thousands of pieces of heavy artillery along the DMZ, plus the thousands of tons of chemical weapons deployable by short-range missiles, have satisfactorily kept the US at bay for many decades. Rather, NK wants missiles with nukes for OFFENSIVE purposes: to render much more difficult and perilous any US counterattack against NK, by denying the US the ability to use airfields and ports in SK, and by destroying US bases in Japan, Okinawa and Guam. Nukes also serve to COERCE a favorable negotiated settlement with NK: agreeing to CAP the nuclear program in exchange for a peace treaty, lifting of all sanctions, increased aid to NK, withdrawal of US forces from SK, and recognition of NK as a nuclear power. The last concession is especially difficult for the US, as it would mean and end to the NPT, and would give enormous encouragement to Iran to race towards a nuclear breakout of its own. NK nukes also better enable NK to engage in asymmetric warfare against SK/US, and to proliferate WMD and nuclear/missile technology to dangerous third world countries. Any treaty to place restrictions on future NK nuclear advances would be worthless, as NK would cheat (as in the past), and would never agree to rejoin the NPT and allow inspections and UN oversight. In summary, the situation is truly hopeless: any diplomatic solution would be a mirage, while a military solution would be catastrophic beyond belief.

Our current leaders bombastic preference to bomb as a negotiation tactic as seen in Syria and most lately with the mother of all bombs display in Afghanistan, combined with his often conflicting messages both diplomatically and politically, officially and unofficially, through normal channels and back channels make our leadership seem as schizophrenic as North Korea's. Certainly the paranoia is the same, the unhinged penchant for imagining, discovering and disclosing plots without the need for truth or evidence is similar. There is also a sense of infallibility, a cult of personality leadership imbued with a ridiculous amount of self aggrandizement as well as a need to constantly breed conflict. The problem is here that between two saber rattling nimrods that Kim Jong-Un is most assuredly the diminutive version of the other and without an alternative exit option, dictators don't retire, they only take a dirt nap. Within that context, Kim Jong-Un may see a first strike as not only an option, but an only option even if it is suicidal. Especially in the light of having seen several other countries lead by demagogic dictators fall, either by invasion or by supporting opposing factions. To not act has proven to be equally suicidal, to act first possible if success is substantial enough to make a nuclear response either militarily or politically untenable. this is the gambit we are creating, have created and may soon see, come to fruition

The distance from Pyongyang to Tokyo is 798 miles, close to Bukguksung-2's range. In fact all major Japanese cities will be within this missile's range. The plan to mass produce these missiles makes clear North Korea's defense strategy. The possibility of a survival of a few of these nuclear-tipped missile after a preemptive attack by its adversaries would give the latter a pause.

President Trump believes in dialogue and often invites visiting world leaders and their families to Mar-a-Lago to enjoy the beach and a gourmet dinner. Experts are also invited so that there can be equal exchanges. The military attaches know all about the liquid/solid fuel dilemma and how to join missile engines like train diesels.

N. Korea has submarines and is building Solid fueled submarine launched missiles. What do we do when they have one of these submarines with nuclear tipped missiles 300 miles off the coast of California?

Military men full of smiles... surely this is proof of an internal reform in North Korea. The uniformity of grin proves a bright future somewhere.

wouldn't it be great if one of his missiles with a warhead was aimed wrong
and hit Russia?
Putin would likely wipe pyongpyang off the map.
Solving the problem for us
wsmrer (chengbu)
No one is going to solve the problem for US, but US and militarily that is not going to happen even without a N.K. Nuke. China and the USA have a solution, meet Kim's demands and 'loss face' but gain sanity.
Probability: slight.

The risk with cyber weapons is that once deployed by any nation they are easily copied by just about anyone with the neccessary knowledge. Thus even if some parts of the cyber attack looked like North Korean code, it could simply been code copied and duplicated by another group and there no way to prove or disprove this.

to most rational people war emanating from Korea is a certainty' IMPORTANT;- its time for Russia China and America to work together on this one' cause its most peoples guess that 'plumpty boy blunder' will end up causing trouble between 3 successful countries by sending armed missiles ' to all 3' thus each said country might mistakenly think a missile has been launched by a friendly said country' its time to do something quick before blunder boy starts arming his missiles; friendly leaders of Russia' China and America; I appeal to your wisdom and protection in respect of keeping the peace by force;

Interesting point especially since I watched the movie The Sum of All Fears yesterday which is based on a book by Tom Clancy.

Opps getting old is dangerous and makes you make mistakes. You get tired of hearing about North Korea. We seem to have less and less of a chance of doing anything. Perhaps the place where the missiles are build needs to be the location where we respond. OK go on and tell them then do it.

I'm assuming that you mean China.
Fat chance Mr. Trump is going to do anything to upset China or Russia!

and canada is doing what to help in this situation?
Nasty Man aka Gregory (Boulder Creek, Calif.)
Hey Canada, are you enjoying this or what?'! Remember all of us lacking-healthcare -types are going to probably storm your borders to get your free nationalized healthcare after the nuclear dud lands on our dirt, which the "little fat one" launches it… Who knows maybe "unfortunate adjustments" to trajectory will miss California and land up in British Columbia somewhere?
