All those marvelous creatures, broken and far from their natural environment. A reason to celebrate the Atlantic Flyway.
'One of Rojas' friends explained that he had turned to drinking to escape dark thoughts. Harrison Ramos said, "I asked him to get help, but he didn’t. He’s not a terrorist. He served his country. He loved his country. He’s not a bad person. He just needs help."'
Getting a little sick of this. When Rojas was caught after having plowed for three blocks into pedestrians in Times Square, he was trying to escape -- and then he brutally raved about wanting to kill people. Now he says he doesn't remember anything. Perhaps not. But having a difficult life is not exclusive to him; murdering an 18-year-old tourist in New York City is. He's an aggressive, drunk, big guy who's already had brush-ins with the law. It's people like him who make me reconsider my antipathy to the death penalty.

Some mornings I cannot find the comments. It is distressing to midd Freddie !
The comments no longer come in the email version. You have to click on the little blue NY Today on the top left of the column which brings up a list of them, and then you have to click on the current one to find the comment box. It's a real pain!!!!

Being an unemployed circus performer seems a grim prospect. Talk about a narrow skill set...
Northern Manhattan also offers some very good birding. Between Fort Tryon and Inwood Hills Parks, there are many varieties that can be spotted. All without leaving "the city".
2
The birds mentioned, cardinals (they are red, not orange as described in article) and catbirds are actually here in NYC year-round. I am lucky that a male and female cardinal like to visit my backyard in Brooklyn. But I am happy to see birding is encouraged!

Actually some of them are more orange--you may want to do that research
Red with a only hint of orange, to be sure, for the males; female cardinals have a distinctive orange bill affixed to a plain brown body.
Before the city began spraying for West Nile Virus, our Brooklyn back yard also had chickadees, red house finches, and titmice. We still get bluejays, cat birds, mourning doves and mockingbirds (but fewer), and of course sparrows regularly.
If you put out feeders, do so after October and before April when their food is scarce. In summer, let them eat bugs. Lots of them.

Birding is a great pastime, but commensense safety rules apply, especially in urban areas. For example, it may be best to go with a group, or at least a partner.

Avian voyeurists, get a life!
We have a life, and it isn't staring at a screen all day.

Huh??

SPRING, BUD
Hocus pocus
The seasonal focus
Shifted to the crocus
As sunshine woke us
In our now-warm locus
Before a shower could soak us.

Do you know when the Ringling Brother clown car auction will be?

Regarding the "And Finally" section: The title’s such an old summer camp pun, but still it fits! (Perversely, I suspect there will be people who go for the high calorie stuff, under the theory that calories are what they out in food to make it taste good.)
Tune of The Happy Wanderer (Val-deri,Val-dera)
When we do brunch at Applebee’s
Or dine at Taco Bell
They count up all our calories
And we say: what the hell?
Calorie, Cal-hurrah
Calorie, Cal-hurrah-ha-ha-ha-ha-
Calorie, Cal-hurrah
Gee, thanks for keeping track!
I read the menu when I go
To any fine restaurant
And wonder when the counts look low
If that is what I want
Calorie, Cal-hurrah
Calorie, Cal-hurrah-ha-ha-ha-ha-
Calorie, Cal-hurrah
Not much in a Big Mac (I'll take two!)
Hey, thanks for keeping track!

Thanks, Freddie. You make me smile every time you post.

That's when I realized it wasn't an overly large pigeon, but a Peregrine Falcon.
I stood looking up at it until it got tired of being on exhibition and flew away.
Beautiful bird. But beware. They are big...very BIG.
Happy Birding!
