I thought maybe it was a 'Get Out of Jail Free' card.
Why didn't the editor make Michael go back and interview a couple of women before it was printed? I was drawn to read this article because I wanted to know what women packed.
I am a professor, and my research sometimes takes me around the world literally. One recent trip included Japan, Romania, France. So Micheal's experience rings familiar, though flights are in coach and there is no Air Force One involved.
Don't bother to bring a book of fiction to read, nor a book of fairy tails to read to your children over the phone. Trump and his crew will supply you with both those items at the official press briefings.
I wish that you could bring a large sign, reminding Trump that he did not receive the most votes in the election. Don't forget a Russian flag to wave, since Trump apparently works for their government.

I really like the behind the scenes snippets, but let's be real -- there have got to be some personal stashes of protein bars, acid reducers, hand sanitizer, breath mints, deodorant wipes, compression socks. Boys, it's not all work. Even the movies and shows you're downloading like 'Madam Secratary' could be considered, 'background,' to provide color.
WHAT ELSE?

Thanks for addressing the absence of female correspondents. I'd love to see a future article covering them.
I'm also really curious about the nitty-gritty of the packing. What's in the carry vs checked bag. How many shirts/ ties/ socks/ shoes? Workout clothes? What do you pack from home vs pick up on the road?
There was a similar article last week about DJ Kaskade and his carry-on only travel, except all he mentioned was tech stuff/ equipment. Where are the clothes???

I could not have said it better than you Emily.
Two male reporters packed ties, sun block and gadgets. That's interesting, but a female perspective is important too.

Yes, what about the ladies? What do they bring with them?
Um--female reporters on this junket? Need because A) talent/equality; B) variety of perspective, and C) much more interesting packing lists!

Apology notes to every intelligent democratically elected official on the Earth.

Who cares what one takes with them on a trip? What one brings back with them from the trip is far more germane to the purpose of the trip.

I thought it was interesting. But it should have included a woman, don't you think? Even the Times corps ought to include a female reporter. After all Melania got off the plane in Saudi Arabia dressed to look like obi-wan kenobie and the male reporters missed that!

Call me a Luddite, but the article underscores that a simple pencil or pen and 3x5s/steno pad would make life easier.

My lithium rechargeable battery pack is indispensable.

What do the women take? It's far more difficult for them to pack for trips the Middle East, or anywhere.

Are there no woman White House correspondents or did the author simply feel three men's boring suitcases would fill the page nicely? I would actually, like to know the answer because based on the locations cited in this paragraph, a woman's decisioning and strategic place in the hot zones mentioned (Air Force One, Saudi Arabia...) would to me be miles more interesting than some cords and the male uniform that if worn by a woman in the same position would put her impossibly awkwardly placed in all named scenarios.

Are there no women in the pack? C'mon people! Get into the 21st Century!

I thought DJ T was going to chop your neck off with that sword: aren't you a little leery of accompanying him in those tight quarters? Call me when you get back, so I know you're still alive.

Michael, Mark and Peter.
No women correspondents who also need to pack?

No worries everyone. We do, indeed, have two women on our 6-person White House team. Julie Davis and Maggie Haberman, both fabulous correspondents, will be traveling with POTUS on future trips. We generally send one or two reporters with the president on each trip, and we rotate that duty depending on interest and who is available. For example, Julie had a conflict and couldn’t go on this one.
So for now, everyone will have to be satisfied with the boring stuff that three guys carry with us. Next time, Julie and Maggie can empty their purses and suitcases.

Does the NYT offer self defense or self defiance training for reporters who may get body slammed if they are inept - rude - or simply ask a bad question to a bad hombre POTUS?
