I actually SAW the movie with my daughter. From what it sounded like everyone in the theater enjoyed it. We did.

When a movie is as endlessly promoted in advance as this movie, my thought is there must be something wrong with it. Looks like I was right. Obviously, the tactic is to get as many people into the theater as possible on opening weekend to score what it can before the bad news spreads. It's just bizarre to think that the main life of mediocre movies is in the months of pre-release promotion only to have it finally die or placed on limited life-support on opening night. It's just like Christmas: A huge build-up for weeks, then it's over in one night, and life goes back to normal.
I had the same reaction to the previews of this flick as I did to "King Arthur": I burst out moaning, thanking the production company for the warning. I don't even get to Rotten Tomatoes or Ebert reviews because I rarely make it passed the previews. My days of taking $20 chances on movies that look this bad in the promos are over.

That's why I read the kind of "peer to peer" commentary I find on sites like IMDb.com -- more so even than professional reviews -- because they are blunt and honest.
The days of stealing my money for awful films is officially over. (If I have any interest at all....I wait and borrow the DVD for FREE at the public library.)

This review seems misogynistic. A.O. Scott criticizes Amy Schumer for her acting and for the cultural appropriation in "Snatched," yet she neither directed nor wrote the film. Jonathan Levine, a man, directed the film, yet is entirely absent from A.O. Scott's review of "Snatched." It is possible that the differential genders of Levine and Schumer play no role in Scott's review, yet unlikely.
7
I agree this targets Amy Schumers weight a lot too, but I guess that's a thing with male writers an obsession with the way females look. Comparing her physicality to Will Ferrell is a pretty gross comparison, mostly because Scott chose to compare Schumer to a man. I do agree her character is likeable, though I definitely enjoyed the film more then loveavle yet snarky Scott. I think it's time for people to look at this movie like it has a different cast--imagine that Goldie Haen is Robert Deniro or someone else who is just kind of funnyn and imagine Amy Schumer is Nick Kroll--maybe then it wouldn't offend people so much, because men would be doing all of these things. Being too doughy, outrageous, funny, or unfunny. This movie has been called racist and a lot of other things that movies like The Hangover were not accused of, but why? Being a funny woman who wants to share that with the world is a double edged sword. Schumer does her best to do what good she can through her television show which has won a Peabody Award. Paul Feig, is a man responsible for creating a lot of these 'funny' female films--why is he the one making them, and if he is the one making them then why does Schumer get the backlash of this movie that isn't even offensive?
4
It's no deep movie and there is no deep summation needed. Is it a great movie? No. Did it make me laugh? Yes. The real scene stealers were the supporting cast in Sykes, Meloni and Cusack.
4
This movie is the embodiment of racist white feminism.
3
No, it isn't. You're just hypersensitive to the point of complete delusion.
I took my Mum and we both loved it! I think I'll go again and take my husband as we both love Amy Schumer
9
My iq dropped a couple of points just reading about it.

I'd be able to comment on this film more accurately had I not been so distracted by the godawful butchery that Hawn has had done to her face. All that cash and she can't find a practitioner who can do decent work? Good lord, does she think people have lost track of the fact that she is in her 70s? No one is looking to invite her to the Prom. This madness has to stop. Suck it up and age gracefully, or strive for a bit more subtlety, like Jane Fonda and others.
3
It's complicated; while a famous actress has access to the best surgeons and hospitals...Los Angeles is such a huge market for plastic surgery (compared to, say, Dayton Ohio) that you get everything there, from the very best surgeons to the worst exploitive ones.
Also, desperate actresses -- wanting to trade on their youthful beauty and fame for longer than their sell-by dates -- often go in for TOO MANY procedures. The first face lift or botox really helps....so they keep doing it....keep adding procedures...until their faces are just weird. You end up in the "uncanny valley" where you don't even look HUMAN, let alone "like yourself".
To my eye, Goldie has had a couple of facelifts in the 15 years she's been retired....plus a whole LOT of filler in her lips and cheeks....and a much too tight eye-lift.
She's 71 trying to look 49 and the math just doesn't -- CANNOT -- work.
1
My Mom and I went to see this movie on Friday. It was really funny. It's not perfect, but Goldie and Amy are delightful and we enjoyed it.
4
Why are comments allowed for movie reviews, but not music reviews? Frustrating. Jon Caramanica does not speak for us all. Be nice to make that known, occasionally. In an appropriate comments section.
7
"Even though she drinks too much, says obnoxious things and misbehaves in other ways — killing two people, for example, one with a shovel and the other with a harpoon — it’s impossible to get mad at her, or even seriously annoyed."
So I guess this is a madcap comedy, right?
So I guess this is a madcap comedy, right?

In the film, Schumer's character kills two people to escape from being kidnapped (and possibly raped or murdered)....in an ACTION film, it would be entirely excusable.
What is weird here is that it is a COMEDY. We are intended to LAUGH at the dead people. The first one (the kidnapper hit with a shovel), he was clearly intending them harm and had the women stuffed in a trunk. But the second death is when Schumer accidentally harpoons the 15 year old son of the head kidnapper. It was kind of creepy to see the death of an innocent kid played for laughter.
1
I went with 4 friends to see the movie. The entire audience broke into laughter several times. Everyone seemed to really like the movie. It definitely had raunchy bits which should not be surprising to anyone who is familiar with Amy's style. I am amazed by the amount of hate I am seeing from people. I was truly happy I went.
8
just came back from seeing it with my daughter. Surprisingly good! People gotta get off their high horse
5
"Comedians" know if you can't be funny be crude. You will still get a laugh. Well, Amy is not funny...so. It is also well documented that she steals material from other comedians.
6
Will wait for this one to appear at the Red Box rental kiosk.
Never been a fan of Hawn at all. I too am distracted with the Silly putty face.
Ms. Schumer has years of box office potential. Maybe a buddy movie with Melissa McCarthy someday?

This was a lousy movie. It had a few funny parts. I am not a prude but Amy's humor was vulgar and left nothing to the imagination. This really could have been a good movie if Goldie were allowed to show her comedic skills and Amy would have toned it down. She over acted. It except for a few parts was not really not very funny. Don't waste your time paying to see this mess.
5
I went with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised by the number of laughs (and even howls).
Granted, it won't turn out to be a classic but it was worth the price of admission.
As far as this review, it's just a reminder that, "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. And then there are critics."

I agree. After a male reviewer on the radio said he had laughed only twice, I expected little. But, I was surprised to find myself laughing many, many times, and so was most of the audience, which I noticed was largely female, all age groups. Okay, many subordinate roles were stereotypes, but they don't matter. The movie belongs to Goldie and Amy.

I suppose that depends on how much you paid to get in, but they don't let people in for free any more.

For years I have followed a motto that I go to see movies with a strong female lead no matter what. I do this because if they can't get bums-in-the-seats the studios won't be convinced to make more movies with female leads. My reasoning is that there have countless war movies, cop movies, gangster movies all with men as the focus and not all were winners but as more of them were made, they had the opportunity to churn out some classics and exceptional ones. One reviewer once said, "no one sets out to make a bad movie" and a quote from a great movie, "sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn't".
11
Before the movie started, Goldie and Amy appeared and thanked the audience for coming to the theater to see the movie instead of seeing it in some other form. They seemed genuinely appreciative and it was a nice gesture. I have never seen anything like that before. The movie itself was a little uneven, but it had several very funny scenes. Not quite as good as "Trainwreck" but since Amy didn't write this movie, maybe the comparison is unfair.

Mr. Ron,
It's a mix of marketing for the ethos and pathos of the consumer: an old trick.

The question is how so many gifted and talented people end up appearing in garbage.
1
Christopher: I think I can answer that. The garbage pays and people need the work.
Probably not too many professional actors who feel they can afford to say "no." Or who's agents feel they can, anyway.

This is a superficial comment, I admit it. This movie is a case when "older" actors have so much plastic surgery that it makes a distraction so powerful, it is impossible to concentrate and enjoy the movie. I dearly wish this wasn't seen as a desirable option to showing ones natural aging process.
36
I didn't even recognize Goldie Hawn at first glance.
8
Laura, this happens when one hasn't seen a person so fondly remembered in awhile. It's also a function of age---at my recent high school reunion, my classmates said that I didn't look like myself. I asked them who I looked like? Just this week I met a friend---whom I hadn't seen for a year---and didn't recognize her. She had arrived first and was already seated at the table. Whom can we recognize? Is it a function of their years gone by or ours?
I don't have anything against plastic surgery, but why do so many celebrities and cable news pundits have so much BAD plastic surgery?
6
I saw a sneak preview Tuesday night, and went in with low expectations, having seen too many previews. However, I laughed through the whole thing, and the last scene with Christopher Meloni had me almost in tears I was laughing so hard. Yes, Goldie is the straight woman in this film, but she's had many decades in the spotlight as a comedienne. She holds her own with AMy Schumer. I think it's time for everyone not to judge too harshly- just go in the theatre to watch with an audience and enjoy the laughter.
24
Still, sounds amusing enough to go see it. I like Amy Schumer a great deal, and had the good luck to meet her; she was very nice to a random fan like me. I never found Goldie Hawn terribly amusing in anything anyway.
As for the accusation of racism, it seems unfounded to me. Would it have been preferable for the movie to be set in Sweden, and have white thugs and kidnappers, but have no darker skinned people in the movie at all? Keep in mind too that in reality, all these darker-skinned people portraying thugs were well paid for their portrayal, auditioned for the roles, and were happy to be in a movie. Also in reality, none of the top 20 countries for kidnapping rates have a majority white population, sorry about that but it's true. This isn't due to race itself, but poverty; poverty causes crime like kidnapping, richer nations don't drive people to such acts of desperation.
So I'm a bit tired of people declaring that Darth Vader is racist because he's the bad guy and black, and other such overreactions. This is just a comedy, not the KKK's "Birth of a Nation". Relax.

Great comments!

It's overreacting to call this "a comedy".
2
Darth Vader isn't black. The character is voiced by a black actor.
1
I guess the very talented Amy Schumer could always take her top off and hope it goes viral AGAIN -on YouTube - if this movie fails a the box office. That would proves just how "talented" she really is...hey, maybe I could do that also ... and make millions ?
6
Amy is a funny gal, although, her HBO special wasn't all that ground breaking. She, like Goldie, are adorable but I think I'll wait to see this when it comes to cable for free. This supposed stinker will do that quickly.
1
"Ground breaking" is your false measurement.
3
I love Amy. Her flip side humor and her gaul to be honest and funny at the same time. I love her gross intelligent and socially relevant humor if your willing to look a bit beneath the surface. Why so many haters? What are you all afraid of? You should listen to her interviews on places like H Stern and others. She is the real deal people. I admire her, her talent, persona passions and her HARD WORK. A lot harder work than it takes to write hate mail. Get a life and let Amy live hers.
You go AMY SCHUMER! And your awesome Uncle Chuck too!

I totally agree CJ, I think the hate is coming from a combination of misogyny from the folks who hate seeing strong women succeed, and from jealousy. Amy Schumer is terrific to me, and I hope she continues to do well in life.
11
Oh my! I was so with you until your last sentence. Go, Amy!
Cousin.
1
I would have written the same review...just from the trailers. No intention of seeing the movie. Such a disappointment. I expected, sorry to say, nothing more from Amy. She was due for a dive. I expected way more from Goldie. I hope she has gotten the urge to come back and show us all she's still got it. Because we know she has!
2
Amy's cable show, stand-up , and "Trainwreck" all display real talent. I like her boldness. Lenny Bruce would have liked her.
It's always hard placing originality within a Hollywood movie framework. Think Robin Williams.
If this movie isn't the usual Amy home run, I'm sure she'll learn exactly what to do next time, if the past is any indication.

Okay, let's all agree to make this the last time anyone compares Amy Schumer to Robin Williams. EVER.

How to review comedy. That's a tricky one. People find different things funny. As seen below in this review headline of the same movie from the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Schumer and Hawn grab us by the funny bone in 'Snatched'
REVIEW: Loved it, loved it, loved it, loved it, loved it, loved it, loved it, loved it, loved it, loved it — and loved it. | ★★★★ out of 4 stars
My guess is most people know if they would like this movie without A.O.'s review.
I'm happy to see Goldie back on the screen and hope there will be more of it in the future!

Amy has an agent, several producers, a director and you would think at least one honest friend who would of said "Amy this script stinks".
9
You mean like the review of King Arthur, "This gives a new meaning to the term disaster movie."
2
If Amy Schumer was revealed to be a conservative Republican, she would be blasted for this stereotyping of South Americans. Since she's a so-called feminist, we're to believe that she should be paid millions for this offensive slop. (Please don't complain about your paycheck, Amy. You're committing robbery at the box-office.) Shame on you Goldie! You wait 15 years to make a film and choose this garbage?
14
OMG time to return to the PC life from the Philippines where life is so much more authentic. Now Harvard will have a separate "black only" graduation? Say it is not true! Wearing your hair in corn rows is racist "cultural appropriation "? Please! But it will not stop. Having Amy Shumer anywhere close by to a screen whether movie or television or computer is just WRONG. Bad taste in my mouth was never this horrid. Like an abscess that drains over my tongue. Wasn't she moving to Canada, or something? Just go away.

"...a soft-bodied clown whose immunity to shame represents an appealing kind of innocence."
Great line. That shtick has a 2-year expiration date.

What are you talking about? It's worked for several men in Hollywood for years. And why does this reviewer need to comment on actors' bodies?
As the late Christopher Hitchens said ( to much criticism), women are not very funny.
5
Amy is very funny, but you need a sense of humor to know this.
3
T.R., you are trying to be funny right? Women aren't funny? Kidding, right? Kidding? Or just terribly, sadly, uninformed.
6
God, I miss him.
1
Looks awful, just judging by the 23 trailers I was forced to watch last night! Why would Hawn agree to this? Does she need the money that badly? Schumer may be smart (as she is always telling every interviewer) but her humor is just gross and vulgar. Not interested in this at all.
8
How dare you inflict your white-male-centric views of comedy on your readers?!?! Check your gender privilege before alleging that hypocrisy and narcissism are not comedy!
7
A good example of why attendance at movies is declining. Hollywood continues to churn out moronic crap when there is an abundance of great stuff on internet TV which can be watched in the comfort of one's home.
48
So I should watch "Overboard" again instead? God help us, it is being remade. Are there no good original ideas in Hollywood?
10
Please say you're kidding! Overboard II isn't needed.
I hated "Overboard." I would have walked but I watched her n on a plane. It was so bad, I did actually consider walking out anyway.
2
Soft bodied. Mr. Scott, you should have known better. The instant I read that phrase I looked for the comments. Careless writing, to be sure, but I have to say I'm pleased that the use of the term has fired up such a debate. Five years ago, perhaps, it wouldn't have made anyone blink. I believe that's called progress.
How did the comments about Scott's review become all about the "soft -bodied clown" remark? We're talking film review here, not gender.body.whatever issues. From what I gather in that respect, the movie isn't so good.
1
And Scott's remark was in reference to how she has come to resemble Will Ferrell in her style of comedy. Readers blew it up out of context.
8
No Amy Schumer for me. I'll pass.
3
disagree as being soft bodied is part of her shtick.
It's weird to get all PC over Schumer's weight, when it is so frequently a subject of her OWN comedy and jokes. And in this film, there are several references to her weight including that she has a "puffy face".
1
I don't think Tony likes this one, eh. I mean, How can Goldie Hawn NOT be funny!?
3
What's really baffling is why Hollywood can't find a few great writers to write a few great scripts for the multi-talented Goldie and Amy and all their talented contemporaries.
39
A.O.'s reviews are generally spot on.
A bellwether.
I wonder weather this movie rung his bell?
I'm guessing not.
I also found the review snarky,
And a bit harsh.
That said,
I'm glad he rang the bell.
Goldie and Amy.
Worth a ring, I'd say.

Kudos to A.O. Scott for setting a record for brevity in his movie reviews. Thank you.
14
A lifelong NYT reader, this is my first comment ever - regardless of AO Scott's opinion of the movie, referring to Amy Schumer as a "soft-bodied clown"
is offensive and unacceptable. I'm tired of seeing a man's judging opinion on a women's figure, as well as male critics' point of view on entertainment where the target is a female audience. We deserve more.

I agree with you about the "soft-bodied" reference but not with the suggestion that only female critics review movies that are targeted at women. If the movie were any good it wouldn't be targeted specifically at one gender or another. In any case, the emotional appeals it presumes to be making would draw in males as well as femmes. Would you similarly insist that "action movies" be reviewed only by critics of the male persuasion? If so, you'd be implying that a movie like The Searchers couldn't possibly hold anything of interest for the wives of John Wayne fans.
11
Sammy couldn't agree more. When was the last time someone reviewed the men in movies for how they looked rather than a performance?
43
First you set yourself up as a defender of women and then shoot yourself in the foot by suggesting the movie is mostly for women, as if men had more interesting things to do than see this film.
I like movies about people of either sex - period.
