I think we need to concentrate on not having our so called current POTUS getting us all killed in a nuclear war before we think about Ms. Haley.

If Mr. Bruni is correct:

then a few more articles like this and you have killed Ms Haley's chances. That would be a shame.
It should be pointed out now to avoid future difficulties that Ms. Nimrata Randhawa, i.e. Ms Haley, was born in South Carolina.

And not one single mention of Samantha Powers. Amazing.

Finally someone in the press understands Trump. He's a psychopath who can't stand to be upstaged. Undermine Trump by shining the spotlight on his toadies Line 'em up: Sessions, Pruitt, etc.
6
HILLARY WON THE POPULAR VOTE DUMMIES People who pontificate about why a woman lost show their ignorance, which does little to support their position. I will say that Nikki Haley seems one of the most articulate, self-assured, intelligent and pragmatic of Trump's Cabinet of Horrors. Though I deride her union busting--high heels or flip flops. Now with concrete evidence of collusion between the Trump team and the Russians, the number of people leaving top office to go to jail will dwarf the number convicted during Watergate. To the extent that it may trigger a Constitutional crisis, requiring an emergency election for President and other top officers. About Sarah Palin--I'm still waiting for her to finish a sentence. I hear she's opened a chain of restaurants with health food called Sarah's Word Salad Bar. Featuring all you can blab!
8
I think many of these comments about Ms. Haley show a deep racism that few liberals are willing to admit.
8
Please stop fawning over someone who, due to her gender, has gained some attention. This kind of press behavior has recently proven to be dangerous.
7
Nikki Haley is SC's version of Sarah Palin, unqualified to serve in any of her elected or appointed roles. She served less than a full term as a member of SC House. As governor, she was followed by multiple claims of ethics violations. She has benefitted from being in the right place at the right time. For most of her terms as governor, she resisted removing the Confederate flag from the SC capitol grounds. She removed it only when the Charleston massacre of 9 black citizens would have made her look bad if she didn't.
6
I'm all in!
3
A conservative like Thatcher, maybe. A dim bulb like Haley, I doubt it.
1
I've been listening to her UN statements; not impressed, seems more like a show than true commitment....give me Samantha Powers any day for seriousness, commitment coupled with actual knowledge. Any UN Ambassador who takes to the floor and deliberately takes a shot at, denigrates the previous administration of her own Country is a party hack and a fool. Haley has done it too many times in her short tenure.
Americans fall in love with the superficial and don't mind a thin layer of qualifications for the job, no matter how important that job may be. Why just look who we have as a president, a grifter who isn't able to learn any other way of going about any sort of business, whether it's his grifting private business or the complex and terrifying requirements of being the leader of the most powerful country in the world. Nikki Haley has charisma. It would be a tragedy if this country goes for one more major political electee based on shallow charisma. Let's see how she does over some years as opposed to some weeks. She's very attractive and appears to be intelligent and conscionable. Let's let her go through the Baptism by Fire and how she emerges will tell us a lot about her qualifications. Until then, I wish her well and I wish the world well with her in this high profile job.
2
"We hope for four years of peace and prosperity," said President Trump walking between ceremonies on Inauguration day. Perhaps a surprise President, even in his own mind, and a sensible septuagenarian in reality he may well be thinking - four years only. I think so. 2020 then becomes a reset and makeover year for both parties. Haley could lead Republicans out of the sexist racist wilderness they are lost in without her even trying. Just by being. She might bring Democrats to a more civil normalization of their own and by her challenge draw out the best young leaders in development. Possibly a person of destiny. Who knows? We are due one.
First of all a Country need to have a 101 lesson on Sikhs, who are strong and powerful and won`t back down even under pressure. Nikki Haley is a non white woman hails from a Sikh family originally.
The Woman was never a supporter of Donald Trump and was seen not so long ago taking the confederate flag down ceremoniously and no one dared to stop that event.
She is in her mid forties and has a long way to go. The same woman responded the call from the President Donald Trump and the rest is history !

In the last century, what has led the NYT to conclude that Republicans would ever nominate anyone as president who isn't a white male heterosexual Christian one-percenter? The first female president will be a Democrat, and there are so many great choices: Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Tammy Duckworth, just to name a few.
12
Let's hope so! She looks great in that photo, confident and in charge.
2
She's not much of a person since she works for a liar and a hater of women.
She's a sell out to all women and nothing more than an opportunistic republican hack.
She should be ashamed of herself for associating with Trump. Obviously the women has no pride whatsoever.

It's almost like we've learned nothing from Nov. 8.
Not even in a year in, yet here goes the NYT/CNN/WSJ engine already trying to manufacture and anoint yet another candidate with more ambition than talent.
US Ambassador to the UN is little more than the public face of State's UN strategy. Though weaker than most of her predecessors, Power understood this. Of course, we currently have no State Department.
Look at the resumes and accomplishments of the highest ranking envoys from Russia and China. Then look at the clowns to whom we hand off our top ambassador and advisory roles, and ask yourself, is this not what we asked for?

Being a craven apologist for the worst President in U.S. history is not a path to the White House.
7
Ms. Haley is presidential timber. And yes she is a woman. The republicans know the order of priority....first qualifications and then gender. The democrats reversed that by pushing Mrs. Clinton through, warts and all. Qualified means more than intellectual gravitas. It means she must pass the character test. Hillary was flawed on that front. She was a self serving, double dealing congenital liar and America saw through her ruse. America has a baseline that any candidate must not fall below. Ms. Haley has no worries on that front. Stay tuned.
3
One way that won't work is campaigning on the platform that men are the enemy.
Ms. Haley has tied her future to the Orange One. If he starts a war on the Korean peninsula her career will be effectively over.
4
I would be wary of the devil with the red dress as the devil you don't know. I appreciate her long belated stand against the Confederate flag in the birthplace of the civil war after the horrible church massacre. However her lack of geopolitical experience & pedantic aggressive rhetoric is scary. I was disappointed when questioned about the desperate rufugee crisis she replied with the pathetic non compassionate trump party line that they are a threat to American security. I don't feel threatened by women & children fleeing a war torn country
2
Such a wonderful byproduct of the election that was missed because of all of the disappointment of women with the results was the fact that we had a female candidate and she won the popular vote.
Hillary made history!
Change takes time and this is amazing progress and a huge achievement towards equality for women, and now we have several viable female candidates, including the daughter of Indian immigrants, and it is easy to envision female candidates on both sides of the aisle.

Hillary Clinton's problem was not that she was a woman. Hillary' problem was that she was a Clinton--scheming, lying, and incompetent--but without any of the charm of Bill. Hillary Clinton is literally the only major public figure in the country who could have lost to Trump.
Do you think that Americans would think that a tough, smart woman like Margaret Thatcher or Carly Fiorina would not be able to keep them safe? Of course not. Haley is not a Clinton; she is more of a Thatcher.

Both HRC and Nancy Pelosi and Elizabeth Warren are examples of the type of women people do not want in the White House.
3
I suppose we'll see a woman president some day. We've had a Catholic president and a black(ish) president, so can a woman or a gay or a Mormon or even an atheist be counted out. Until there's a second within a category we won't know if it's become normal.
Better to vote on a person rather than a category.

This woman signed on with Donald Trump, the hater of women and immigrants. She has no more integrity than he does. Women have no heroine in this sellout.
Just another opportunistic republican politician.

20
If she seeks high public office after the UN, Republican operatives will advise Haley to "have some work done" & to campaign wearing Spandex.
As to deviation from the Republican playbook in public statement, that is now standing operating procedure via the presidential Tweeter. Keeping friend & foe guessing will exact tribute, one way or another.

"One thing you can't do with Donald Trump is outshine him."
That brings to mind a message my mentor once gave to me,
"If you don't want to be in anyone's shadow, you ought to make your own light."
I suspect Mr. Trump needs to start making his own light, rather than trying to darken the light of others.

Right, so bashing unions in a right-to-work state where working class individuals make half the pay as they do up north is somehow "tough" and "powerful."
14
It's unimpressive in a meaningful way when leaders bash unions. All it indicates is their callous affinity for jumping on the band wagon of some issue stirred mostly by people who don't like money being taken from their corporations to give the American dream life to America's working class stiffs.
2
If ANY of this were true, then Hillary Clinton would have won the election. She denounced (at that time) Senator Obama during the campaign and then went on to become a member of his cabinet -- exactly what you are saying about Nikki Haley. But with specific regard to Nikki Haley, she is working within an administration that is so breathtakingly hostile to women that it's hard to believe that she would get the women's vote -- there is no way to get that stench off no matter how much she tries to distance herself.
6
I'm still struggling with how elected officials like Ms. Haley, after denouncing candidate Trump then hitched their fate to his wagon. Having not heard one solid piece of inside-info (like what was actually said when Trump interviewed them, other then his weak descriptions of "great bonding") as to why they changed their minds, all I can come up with is political greed, lust for more power. Not even the old cliche, "when the president calls you answer with a yes." (which I applaud ret. Vice Adm. Bob Haward for refusing)
So why did Ms Haley abandon her dislike, and climb on board? This article only confirms my bias that with the GOP its all about the lust for power by hungry political animals, who play very hard, political hardball. That its about the public-persona on the political stage, and not the real person therein. Or that they are all one in the same, harsh with cold water in their veins. Which is way worse then the most awful critiques about HRC and her coldness, that always shattered when she spoke from the heart.
Now I havent paid much attention to what Ms. Haley said on her own campaigns, or as gov, (some of which sounds sketchy) welcomed her dislike of Trump heartening as a GOP'er and a female, we only get snippets of her rhetoric now, especially when it conflicts with her boss, so Im gonna see how good a job she does. Hoping she realizes she works for the US citizenry, the constitution, and not just Trump.
But that wagon jumping always bothers me.

Well put! I couldn't agree more, especially about hitching her wagon to the Liar in Chief. As Tom Waits wrote, "What /are they/ building in there?"
In politics it is not uncommon to join the administration of a person of the same party you once denounced.
Hilary Clinton denounced Sen Obama, but became Pres Obama's Sec of State.
Hilary Clinton denounced Sen Obama, but became Pres Obama's Sec of State.
Yes thank God Mrs. Clinton did not have a lust for power
At the end of the day, I believe misogyny would be her curse. There are a LOT of men who simply believe a woman is not "strong" enough to make life and death decisions, stand up to foreign leaders, etc. From borh sides if the aisle, but especially GOP voters. Not in total, but it was a significant factor in HRC loss.
3
There are a lot of weak men who simply believe a woman is not strong enough to make life and death decisions and all the other things that go into being a strong leader. They've been proven wrong over and over but because they're men saying it, it lingers far too long in some collective consciousness of the weak-minded.
2
is this an argument that sex is sufficient to disguise anything that is disgusting?
Hope not. She has demonstrated many of the same traits that trump has. Lies, deceptions, and a flair for a glam moves intended to disguise and make her look vaguely responsible. What a joke. At least unlike trump she can't hurt too much.

Im still not convinced that anyone appointed by Trump has the skills, let alone the grit to get their jobs done. As for the UN, I'm still not sure what our role is in it, or if the whole institution isn't on borrowed time.
And I'm not sure the descriptions of being a political monster, is what this nation truly needs. Because I'm not sure what it means, when ideology seems to be the guiding principles - over morality, pragmatism and well...seeking over-all better "health" for the nation.
We're not even at the 100 day mark yet, and now we're looking to see IF the UN rep is a possible viable future presidential candidate. ?? Im sure she will be a candidate, why not, everyone else in the Repub party runs for it, seems like a summer job for most of them.
Ms. Haley has yet to do anything of substance, much like the rest of the Trump camp, but at least she hasn't set-out to destroy anything, unlike the rest of the camp.
Lets wait to see if she can strike any sort of deals, anywhere, before handing her off to the Presidential campaign circus tour.
Wouldnt it be nice to see someone do such a job, do it well and do it for a serious amount of time, before they are paraded around as the next GOP Messiah...?
The picture for this article is so classic...such a propaganda piece. Woman, strong, striding, surrounded by, but leading males. Looks like a fashion shoot for Vogue advert. "Strong woman, still classy!" Its still about her being a woman, not being a qualified human!

Rex Tellerson, former CEO of one of the biggest companies on Earth, doesn't have the grit to succeed? Are you serious? The man worked harder at Exxon than maybe anyone else on the face of the planet ever has. And remember, a lot of his job was negotiation oil deals with foreign governments. Get your head out of the sand and think a little bit
"Strong woman, still classy!"
All it needs is a cigarette.
All it needs is a cigarette.
I expect that Ms. Haley will be vilified by the media and the Democrats because they fear her extraordinary abilities. Also, Ms. Haley will prevent the Democrats from using their normal line of attack against Republican politicians that they are racists and misogynists.
9
It's possible for women to be misogynists too. Who signs a bill that makes abortion illegal at 20 weeks, including for victims of rape and incest? Who opposes equal pay for equal work, regardless of gender?
Sorry, but the attempt to paint Haley as some sort of breakthrough for women is just plain silly. Her policies define her, not her gender.

13
I expect Ms. Haley will eventually be vilified, if she doesn't grow into the job, by her own missteps. Such glowing praise for someone with no experience in a job she's had for weeks qualifies as a puff piece with no real evidence to back any serious opinion of her qualifications or effectiveness at this point. Those of us who believe fervently there should be more strong women in positions of power don't want them there just because. We want strong powerful women in positions of power because they can have a positive and important impact for the country.
1
Only 4 countries allow abortions after 20 weeks. Three of them are the US, China, and North Korea.
Who opposes equal pay? Apparently Barack Obama and Elizabeth Warren. Women who worked in Obama's White House made 15% less than men did. Warren pays her female staffers 30% less than male employees.

Nikki Haley? The Good Old Boys' face in Oklahoma? President? Not in my lifetime.
She's just being used. She is a Native American. Why isn't The Con Don calling her Pocahontas? The Con Don and his International Mafia Top 1% Global Financial Elite Robber Baron/ Radical Religion Good Old Boys' Party/ Corporate Cabal simply use women to get what they want. Use and discard.
Run, Nikki. Run.

She is not Native. She is of Indian descent, her parents emigrated here from India.
1
Nikki Haley's parents are immigrants from Indian, not from the American West of another era so Pocahontas would hardly apply.
She is not a Native American. She is of Indian (Punjabi) descent.
1
The only reason so many would vote for a Republican woman for president is because the patriarchal theme of the Republican Party gives the green light to regressive people that even though she's a female president she's not going to "threaten" you in any way by actually being pro-woman. Same rules for a first Republican black president.
7
Ms. Haley is lucky Ms. Clinton advanced that road for women already. Hillary demonstrated superb strength not only in foreign policy but in also in national security. Ms. Walsh does not need to worry about that. At the end of the day.
5
Yet it never crossed her mind that a server in her basement might be a security rusk
So let's see, she has to build foreign policy credibility, but the Donald is given a pass...
4
The very fact that Nimrata Haley gleefully spoke of using her high heels to "kick unions," or those who do not unequivocally support Israel, speaks volumes about her, but none of those decibels is positive. Had HRC made any similar comments, she would have been flayed by the right wing, for the record. Haley's entrance into her role in the UN was marked by belligerence wholly absent gravitas or broad-based knowledge of the complexities of current geopolitics. This woman ignored the Confederate flag hanging over her own State House until 9 Charleston residents were gunned down by a white supremacist on her doorstep - being backed into an optics corner and then taking action does not connote someone with moral compunction as much as it speaks of someone who is a craven opportunist, particularly in light of her rabid support for unfettered gun access. She has savaged the poor in her state, thanks to her hard right wing ideological refusal to expand Medicaid, she is another right wing Christian extremist who welcomed Palin's endorsement; she is a fact-free tax slasher as well. Thanks, but I'll take gravitas, intellectual probity, and true tikkun olam any day over this self-serving, demagogic woman. 4/15, 10:19 AM
38
Maybe she is maybe she is just a decent, patriotic person who does her best to serve her country despite its backward citizenry and its despicable leadership.
6
There's an important word that's most meaningful to be attached to Ms. Haley at this embryonic stage of her new position and that's maybe. Why don't we all wish her well and hope maybe she will be half as good as we want her to be.
NYT readers should get out their reminder books and make a note of this date. For probably the first time in 2017, a founding paper of the coastal media groupthink has carried a positive photograph of a member of the new presidential administration.
Generally, all photos of non-progressive political figures are required to be blown up or altered to make the person look as frightening, mean, or stupid as possible.
Confer with the photos of any Trump voters in political meetings carried here over the past year, where te term ''neanderthal'' would be high praise.
But possible future president Haley is definitely moving unlike any Dem candidate since their second debate last fall, with a direction in more ways than one.
These are the good weeks, before Ms. Haley becomes the Enemy of the Times and WaPo and all who bow before a certain oligarch.

Looks like counting chicks before they hatch is a national pastime along with Whist in the unicorn village of Fair Verona. Lol
Why are people so obsessed with having a woman as President? We've had women occupy almost every single position in government except President. We've had women elected countless times - clearly, Americans ARE okay with having women lead. Just because we haven't had a woman as President yet does not mean feminism is dead and women's rights have failed. Don't force it...just be patient. Also, the Democrats should be careful with this. They assume the first female President will be a Democrat, but when they shriek about this stuff non-stop, it encourages voters to choose a woman simply for being a woman...who could easily be a Republican. And Nikki Haley has proven that a female Republican can be just as bad as all the other Republicans. Be careful, my fellow Democrats, liberals, and progressives...this could all backfire.
5
Let's give Nikki Haley some time to season up. She's really proven nothing about her skills on the national and internationals stages yet. My goodness, she's been in her new position for what, a few weeks? You could barely put that job on your resume at this point.
1
Thank you for the laff while we wait for the Resurrection.
The real question is the mania males have in America about this- It's like solving a crime: why in 240 years has this been so threatening here? How do we know it's not just about "being patient enough"??- we know bec we finally have the most incompetent cabinet ever assembled with a fat, unskilled cheater at the helm. In this culture this is Last Pick on the Last Day. And it has nothing to do - literally -with competent women.

Good post. I don't think Democrats or liberals are shrieking non-stop about having a woman president. This columnist appears to think it's an issue, but most Clinton supporters (myself included) voted for her because she was the qualified candidate. In 2008 I preferred Obama because I thought he was the better nominee.
There may be voters obsessed with getting a woman in the White House, but I think they're in the minority.
Interesting that some posters seem to think that the very act of voting for a female of South Asian background proves that they're not misogynists or racists. The logical fallacies on display are amazing.

"This is a president who has repeatedly bridled at subordinates who he feels are too much in the limelight". trump may take a while to get his revenge, but every single person he has appointed to anything will eventually tumble from their job...pretty sure everyone he has appointed to anything is someone he considers an enemy that would have been working against him underground until he dangled fresh meat in front of them....this way he can keep an eye on them and be the first to point out to the public what "failures" they were....case in point, President Steve Bannon!
3
"She was this different looking woman - nice looking......"
Ahhhhhhhhh, Republicans!!!!!!!
Ahhhhhhhhh, Republicans!!!!!!!
13
If Nikki Haley was to run for president, she would face exactly the same problem that Hillary Clinton faced. In both cases, a man with the same experience and political skills would not be given a chance. Most of the support given to either woman comes from a desire to see the first woman president. That's not enough to get elected. President Obama was elected despite being a black man, not because of it. He was an excellent politicians and had a clear and personal vision of what he wanted to accomplish. Hillary Clinton (who I admit I voted for) was a poor politician and made no attempt to lay out her vision of the future. There is evidence that Nikki Haley is any different.
1
We already answers this question......
We don't want a woman in there.
We don't want a woman in there.
I can't imagine enough Republican voters overcoming their racism and dislike of brown people to do it. Also, the way the election cycle goes, and the cruelty of the Republican Party obvious for all to see now, it is the Democrats presidency to lose in 2020. Still, many Democrats don't vote.
4
Seriously? Who's your current governor in New Mexico? Susan Martinez, a Republican.
7
Chriva: Lol.
Trump gave what was called "a blistering assault" on Susan Martinez just last May. Said she "wasnt dong her job" in New Mexico.
Made a LOT of people mad there.
So No, probably not a lot of "there" there.

Seriously, we couldn't get a smart, assertive, capable woman into the White House and you think a woman of color has a shot. Really?
I'm not a Trump fan but lately with all the fawning by the pundits and press he may be headed for a second term if he doesn't destroy the world before 2020. The more bombs he drops the more cheering he gets what can go wrong.
Haley will be using a mop and broom to clean up after him at the UN no disrespect intended.

There is only one biological DNA genetic evolutionary fit multi-colored, multi-ethnic, multi-faith and multi-national origin human race species. Neither color nor ethnicity nor faith nor national origin are racial markers. Color is a chronological ecological response to varying levels of solar radiation at different altitudes and latitudes primarily related to Vitamin D production and protecting genes from damaging mutations.

Compared to the likes of a Susan Rice or a, Condolezza Rice, Nikki Halley has no educational nor professional qualifications nor experience for her position. Nikki Haley is no Barack Obama.
7
She has more executive experience then Mr. Obama had
Certainly, my organization (St. Louis Indivisible) and I will dedicate our lives to making sure this does not happen.
12
The Trumpers don't believe in the UN. They just leave her there as a loose cannon and she can say anything she wants but it is meaningless.
9
Ms. Haley has earned high praise for actually contributing to the leadership of the Western democracies in stark contrast to the amateurs sent there by Barack From On High. She is an asset to the U.S. at a critical time as world leaders are becoming accustomed to having a brash American President saying what he actually thinks.
5
Oh she's being set up for a fall alright....and this way, trump's pal is now the governor of SC. In the meantime, she's trying to be serious in such a way that makes me believe I could teach at MIT....
6
My, how quickly we label our leaders as successful assets. It should make one want to take a Republican job. Don't mess up for four weeks and you're suddenly a shining international star.
1
Nice photograph. A woman in stupid high heels among men in "sensible"shoes. Says a lot about who's in charge, really.
12
Wow! What a photo! It gives the illusion that she's a serious person, as opposed to a cipher from South Carolina.
7
Gender, like race or religion, matters least in a political leader, leaving symbolism aside. This one is a southern reactionary is the worst sense. Her public positions have hurt the most people in health care, education, and taxes.
Off script, she chirps platitudes a 9th grade ESL student would be embarrassed to utter. There is no there there.
Off script, she chirps platitudes a 9th grade ESL student would be embarrassed to utter. There is no there there.
7
I am struck again and again by the irony of interest group/identiy politics being emphasized independent of policy considerations. If she is a woman who beats down working people, aggressively throws military might around the world, and works to promote the interest of the 1% and gets elected president, then progress is achieved? Let's get a grip on this and consider content before identity, it matters.
7
Here's the problem. Ms Haley is all talk in an organization that is all talk. Say what she will, her ability to influence world events, and more importantly, bad behavior by the world's miscreants (Russia, North Korea, Syria, etc.) is zero. Case in point, allegedly it was Ivanka Trump beseeching her father to act against Syria that produced results, not Nikki Haley rallying our allies. Russia vetoed a resolution calling for a transparent investigation into the Syrian chemical weapons attack, and all Haley could do is publicly berate them. To paraphrase Mark Twain, thunder is impressive but it is lightning that does the work. In this regard, Haley has no juice. That nothwistanding, Chira is to correct to postulate that if anyone can parlay her UN post into a springboard for national office it is Nikki Haley - because she's a woman with "big balls." How unfortunate to resort to an analogy using male anatomy to make a point - but I'm at a loss for a superior one for a strong, fearless woman. I'd really like a female author to coin one, so I can use it to express similar colloquial admiration for those traits. Suggestions from anyone not cowed by political correctness?
2
She is a shining star of the anti-federal government Tea Party: she's pro guns; she's antichoice; she's for Christian-based laws; she's antiwomen, antigay and antiminorities; she's for weakening the public safety net; she believes it's way too difficult for Americans to acquire guns; she's anti-Syrian refugees; she's big on bold statements but light on deep thinking. She believes the rich pay too much in taxes. In short, she sounds like the perfect Republican presidential candidate.
23
Please. Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III will kill off whatever affection people have for southern Republicans.
How about a real New Yorker (No, not you, Andrew. Please go away). Kirsten Gillibrand. Tough. Smart. So charming you'll thank her after you lose.

She and Trump have much in common, beginning with the fact that neither of them has had an original thought, and continuing with the fact that neither has developed an ability to read a teleprompter or notes with anything other than what would be expected from a 6th grader. Those shortcomings may sound trivial, but in Ms. Haley's job, they are critical, as is an understanding of global politics, which is another area in which both she and Trump come up empty. She was chosen because his cabinet and upper echelon appointees were white and male. He didn't have any idea about what Haley's position entails, but he needed a woman to show his version or 'diversity'. She is as unqualified for this position today as she was when appointed. If she were not female this would just be another incompetent appointment by the Trump administration. Looking at it as anything other than that gives Trump too much credit.
9
Mrs. Haley has a good heart and I believe will make well thought out decisions in her role as Ambassador. While you can never be sure what goes on behind closed doors, I don't see her playing a balancing act. She is her own person that will do the right thing irrespective of who her boss is. Additionally, I don't think President Trump is a micromanager as his responsibilities are enormous and multifaceted. I believe he wholeheartedly trusts the people he hired to do their jobs effectively, but his lack of government experience and love of cronyism blind sided him on some choices. While I'm disappointed in his actions consistently, his business mind has taught him when and where to back off and let people do their jobs. As I've posted numerous times, Ambassador Haley is one of the smartest selections our President has ever made. He needs more people around him like her who are going to speak truth to him versus billionaires who don't have the skill sets or diverse lenses to function effectively in their cabinet positions.
I will always admire Ambassador Haley. Her support of the Emmanuel 9 victims family and friends will always be heartfelt and never forgotten. Her presence at their funerals and her quick action against hate will remain deeply embedded in my heart.

6
In what way does she have a good heart? When she expressed support for the families of the Charleston massacre? Wouldn't anyone do as much? Isn't it a bit hard-hearted to refuse Medicaid expansion or to slash taxes while cutting school funding?
When did she speak truth to Trump? I've only seen her react, and often she doesn't seem in contact with him.

Another "Inside the Beltway" version of sports commentary. Who's up, who's down, "big league prospect." It's the kind of "reporting" from corporate media that helped put Drumpf's tiny hands on the nuclear button and "big boy" weapons to play soldier with. That Nikki Haley has political ambitions isn't news nor is the fact that she's a woman.
9
Remember Conoleeza Rice? She was sometimes thought of as a presidential possibility, even before Barak Obama break the color barrier. Had C. R. been of a lighter complexion she might well have emerged as a serious presidential contender. She was Secretary of State. So was Hillary Clinton and he tenure in that office established her as a serious contender. It seems diplomatic positions have given women the biggest boost in their political potential...
2
No remembers C. Rice except for helping Bush lie us into Iraq.
2
But, one must remember, since nearly everyone's conveniently forgotten, that Ms. Rice was an integral member of the Bush-43 administration. That dis-qualifies her.
4
She was an employee of Pres. Bush and she carried out his orders and policies. Secretaries of State do not have independence in policy formation, so C.R. cannot be faulted.
If you want to blame someone, blame her boss.
If you want to blame someone, blame her boss.
1
Haley is more republican than she is a woman. She doesn't stand for any of the issues important to women (healthcare, equal pay, childcare, education) so she is wrapped in the right outside packaging but inside she is just another old white guy or a sellout willing to do what she has to, to get to where she wants to. Deplorable.
18
I don't think it would be surprising at all if the first woman president was a Republican. The first woman on the Supreme Court was nominated by a Republican president. Nevertheless, it doesn't change the fact that many of their policies hurt women.
4
Nimrata Randhawa has aligned herself with already the worst president in American history. This will wound her forever as the daily fiascos keep piling up.
When she goes off script. she exposes herself as shallow and thoughtless. She might have been perfect as Helms for South Carolina, one of the most backward states in the country, but to suggest her a leader of the free world is pure satire.

I liked your article. I decided to follow you on Twitter,And hope to continue finding fair and balanced opinion on conservative women and men. One mor ething: I think this lady has a lot more "gravitas" than the former Alaska governor.
2
Can we please stop this inane speculation about potential presidential candidates? The country has a plethora of problems that cry out for coverage.
If I could wave a wizard's wand and stop ALL breathless horse race coverage of our elections I would do so in a New York minute.

why is it SO IMPORTANT TO ELECT A WOMAN. I just want the BEST person. I don't care if it's a woman, a man or a frigging turtle. I just want the best. and when you agenda-ists get that, that is the best for EVERYONE, then we can start to work together
4
Analysts like Chira like to speculate because this assumption gets reactions. I doubt that many people care about gender, including Clinton voters. Policy is what counts.
One of the reasons it's important to many to elect a woman is to open the nailed-shut door to the possibility. The empirical evidence is there is enough bias against voting for a woman for the highest office among old fossil men who grew up thinking everything should be patriarchal in politics when you get to the most serious positions. There are pockets of success, governorships and such, but not the top job. There are more women in the U.S. than men. The job should be shared.
1
next vice president running mate of the next whoever rich white man over 50 who will run for Republican ticket
2
If she even had 1/10th of Jeanne Kirkpatrick's expertise, moral compass and resolve, we'd have something to celebrate right now. Unfortunately, at the moment she is a young opportunist -- perhaps of a slightly higher quality than Ryan, but that's still a far cry from FP States(wo)man status.
Having said that however, let's hope that she spends the next decade developing/deepening her breadth of knowledge, purpose and understanding. At this point, as much as we might gain satisfaction from venting our "throw the bums out" sentiment, we cannot afford to weed out people who show even a modicum of promise in the international arena. We must actively cultivate serious, accompished professionals. Who knows? She might turn out to be such a one in twenty years.

This is so very premature. Donald Trump has no plan and is ignorant of things that middle school students here in Oregon know and understand ("The relationship between China and North Korea is complex! Chemical weapons are awful!"). There is unfortunately plenty of time for his Blackhawk Down moment; and when that happens Nikki Haley will be so much collateral damage. Remember that DJT resented her non-endorsement and insulted her publically at the time; he will take satisfaction in hanging her out to dry. Maybe her political career survived that, but I wouldn't bet on it.
7
Nikki Haley is an intellectual Potemkin village. She's charasmatic , can read a teleprompter or prepared speech effectively, but doesn't even know what questions to ask, let alone have any subject expertise. Although after Donald Trump's election experts may conclude that ignorance is no barrier to the presidency, Haley will be judged by the misogynistic American double standard, and will not be able to withstand the microscopic scrutiny of her personal life.
2
Seen from Europe , with the UK, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Poland Lithuania, Latvia , Slovenia, Switzerland all having women Presidents and M. Le Pen is the poll leader in the French election for President, the contortions of the NY TImes to explain why it not yet, has happened in the US are amusing.
It's is a reflection of US culture that tolerates higher inequality in income, as well as in gender politic.
I hoped Janet Napolitano, Governor of Arizona, Secretary of Homeland security under Obama would run in the 2016 elections, but Ms. Clinton crowded all competitors.
She had the security credentials
Given her record as a competent Governor and Homeland Secretary, she might have beaten Trump

I can't pile on the praise.
She refused the Medicaid expansion and that prevented access to healthcare for many South Carolinians.
She wasn't compassionate.
There were never enough motorized carts for the many handicapped people living there or visiting there. Complaints fell on deaf ears.
Millions of citizens' vital information was compromised in the worst data breach by any US state. She neither act quickly on it, nor had there been preventative measures.
They sat on the breach and did a Friday news dump when finally acknowledging it. State Revenue had been without a computer-security director while hackers obtained Social Security numbers and other data of 6.4 million individuals + businesses. Haley refused to acknowledge it could have been prevented.
A scathing report by the Legislative Audit Council in October 2014 found that thousands of the state’s children were victims of abuse/neglect and some died after the state social service dept. decided to refer their cases to community prevention programs instead of investigating them.
This governor's team was obsessed with slashing monetary assistance to people. And keeping unions out of the state.
The state can't seem to shake it's love of the word plantation. Everything is a plantation---golf courses, condo resorts, apartment complexes, shopping areas. It is an offensive term from the days of slavery. It fell on deaf ears to eradicate its use. She could have encouraged those changes and did not.

I will never consider voting for a Republican again, regardless if they are running for dog catcher or President of the USA. Beyond any shadow of a doubt there are only 2 kinds of Republicans in my mind; the ones who pander to Corporations and oil companies and the ones who smile while selling snake oil to the lesser educated Americans who vote for them.
11
I don't care about the president's gender. I want a GOOD president, who understands representing all the people as best as any central government can. I'd like 2 parties that understand the same thing. I don't care about gender; that's not the agenda, nor should it be. And I sure don't want someone like Nikki Haley for president.
14
She is a bit player in a staged performance, cast as a diplomat who is not one. These people who staged the production only value power and money. They are making big decisions and taking huge risks without the input of the American people and with an incompetent president. Hillary was going to do the same, perhaps more competently, but certainly not any more morally. These people serve themselves and their banking and energy masters. I am tired of being lied to and conned and dictated to. What kind of life do they think they are leaving for us? for our kids and grand kids? Not that it matters to them. Only power and money matter to them. The players of the GOP have chosen a reprehensible path for us all. We cannot promote economic hegemony at the end of a gun any more than we could promote freedom or nation building at the end of a gun. But then, it was never about that anyway, was it? You billionaires. You take your money, all of it, and leave this country. Most of you will eventually leave anyway. Leave now, so the rest of us can find our own way forward without your stains on us. Leave now. You are dangerous, horrible, greedy people and you have terrorized in our name long enough.
2
If Nikki Haley has her eyes on the Top Office, she sure is on the wrong side of the Partisan divide. If she does not recognize the obvious misogyny and callousness towards women in her chauvinistic GOP peers, then that is a real personality flaw. Ambition and greed can only get her to the UN Ambassadorship. Everything else is wishful thinking no matter how you contort yourself. One cannot shed being a woman which would disqualify her even before the process starts.
6
Stop it with the horse-race talk, NYT. That is what is wrong with the relationship between politics and the news media. More issues, less horse-race. Got it?
20
The classic mean girl, same as PALIN. However, appears to have been sent to the same GOP re-education camp. Time will tell. However, the choice to align with Donald indicates that she does NOT lack ambition.
Check back in 6 months to see if she's even visible. I have my doubts, thus far she has only made special guest appearances, showcasing the tough gal routine. Best wishes, to ALL of us. Seriously.

Republicans under Trump have been stripped of the big words and think tank talking points that masks its agenda as anything other than what it is: kill the sick, starve the poor, and turn away the stranger.
11
Actually if she gets there it will be after a stint as South Carolina's senator filling in Lindsey Graham's seat when he retires. And you can be sure that it will be Graham who will endorse her as his successor. Why do I say that? For that you have to check out how Nikki rose through South Carolina politics. So no wonder there is hardly any daylight between her pronouncements and Senator Graham's views in foreign policy even as her boss is struggling with which way to go.
5
If she speaks for Sen. Graham and Sen. McCain would that surprise anyone?
Trump is too busy playing golf.

yES, Ivanka will make a great first woman POTUS.
She seems pretty ineffective so far. Lol

Elizabeth I and the Spanish Armada, Margaret Thatcher and the Falkland Islands, and many others. Gender and physical strength have nothing to do with courage, determination, and leadership. I've been in plenty of groups where women took charge more than men. And the tasks weren't just about cooking and child care.
5
Or perhaps a woman finally reaches the White House the same way a black man did -- by following a deeply unpopular white male president widely seen to have mucked things up badly. So badly, that a relative unknown, young, African American came out of almost nowhere to win the presidency for the opposition party. It took Bush two terms to set that stage. I'd say Mr. Trump is on a faster pace.
11
I am an Independent voter living in Spartanburg, SC. I came here four years ago and became acquainted with the then Governor of our state, Ms Nicki Haley. I was quite impressed by her political clout, with the gentility of her ways. She came on like a bull after the shooting in the Charleston AME church. That Confederate flag of years gone by ....finally came down. She is without a doubt going to figure in future politics in our great country....which, by the way has always been great. We never waiver...USA. Proud to see her strong stance as our delegate at the UN.

A Haley presidency is unlikely, for reasons wholly aside from her race and her sex.
It's mathematically unlikely. There have been 29 U.S. ambassadors to the United Nations, not counting acting ambassadors, and 13 presidents during that time. Only George H.W. Bush has ever been both U.N. ambassador and president. Neither one in 13 nor one in 29 is much of a bet.
It's also chronologically unlikely. For Haley, 2020 is pretty much off the table. If Trump does well and runs for re-election, she's certainly not going to run against him. If Trump does badly and doesn't run - or if he leaves office before 2020 - then the odds are that Haley's association with Trump would bar her from serious contention in 2020. Her first real shot would be 2024, and who knows if what is "catnip to mainstream Republicans" today will be at all appealing then? Bush spent 16 years between his U.N. ambassadorship and his presidency, during which time he served as CIA director, chair of the RNC, and vice president.

@Ecce:
Interesting arguments. Logical. However, they are reasoned and reasonable in an unreasonable age.
The math is appallingly simple, the small problem of raising a billion dollars aside. To win the presidency she must garner at least 270 electoral college votes. Nothing else matters. She does that by holding the red state bastion that reliably votes Republican no-matter-what while poaching several blue and purple states, as Trump did. But in that bastion she confronts the very real problem of racial and gender politics. Large numbers of Republicans are misogynists, anti-immigrant, racist and, frankly, stupid.
Stupid.
Stupid is as stupid does. Trump rode them like donkeys into the White House. He played them for the fools they are by pandering to their petty hates while going out of his way to legitimize and de-stigmatize that, and their stupidity. By lying to them constantly and shamelessly. By relentlessly hammering racist, misogynistic, anti-immigrant and sexist tropes he whitewashed and legitimized it, and them. He also played the media like a fiddle.
She can't do any of that.
So, many of Trump's supporters either won't vote for her or vote at all, and I don't see her poaching many blue states or winning many purple, or "swing", states. And Russia won't be able to disrupt the election yet another time with FSB-conducted "active measures" -- cyberwarfare -- assuming that he decides she would be the best American president to install for his purposes.

She could perhaps follow the don the con strategy of taking the most looked-up-to and admired country in the world and making it into the most loathed and inept. Apparently it's easy to turn a democracy into a plutocracy.
While S. Carolina politics may be tough, the education, health, general economic strength and development are backward and among the worst of the US States.
Sounds like the winning republican tradition. Party over country!

I have one small correction to this article. The sentence "Although she had stayed away from the charged issue of the Confederate flag during her first five years in office, she backed removing it from the State House building after the Dylann Roof massacre in Charleston." The Confederate flag was removed from the State House building before Ms. Haley became governor. At that time, the flag was placed at the Confederate monument on the State House grounds. Ms. Haley was successful in leading efforts to remove it from the monument after the Dylann Roof massacre.

You might just ask her what her position is on Israeli government sponsored settlement expansion in the West Bank area of Palestine. Where are your priorities?
2
We certainly recognize your priorities! Nikki Haley is discussing hot spots around the world -- Syria, North Korea -- and your first concern is decades-old Palestinian bellyaching. No one cares anymore.

Mr. Dawson, though not the focus of this story, is the person in it who stood out to me the most. Asked about a colleague of his who is now a senior member of the presidential administration, he chose to comment on her appearance -- even calling her "different-looking" without irony or shame. And he fully embraced the notion that participating in Republican politics in South Carolina requires infiltrating "the good old boys" club. I suppose it's refreshing that he made no effort to disavow the stereotypes about his home state? In any event, as long as these are the views of the leaders of the Republican party, the presidential prospects of Nikki Haley - or any other female member of the GOP - are looking dim.
11
It is a fact of life that politics in every state, as well as every county and municipality, "requires infiltrating 'the good old boy' club" in one way or another. That Nikki Haley was able to do that in South Carolina and many others, both male and female, were not says a good deal about her.
Katon Dawson, former chairman of the state’s Republican Party -“She was this different-looking woman — nice looking — and I’m not surprised at her success. She can play ball with the good old boys.

Sounds like the writer is a theory buff. So yes, if the choices are Nikki Haley, Kellyanne Conway, or Mitch McConnell for first female GOP POTUS, let's choose Ms Haley.
But this is like that game we all played as kids- "Would you rather ...have your face crushed by a runaway steamroller or a wild python?" or "Would you rather ...eat French fries with a weedeater or a pick axe?" etc. - those kinds of choices.

More identity politics nonsense from this paper----a paper obsessed not with competence but equal results based on gender, race, sexual orientation.
9
If America didn't put gender first ahead of competency Trump wouldn't be in the White House in place of a former Secretary of State and Senator.

Slim pickings !!
What leadership , intelligence , wisdom or intellectual prowess has she demonstrated ??
Ahha .. but she does have a sex scandal in her baggage ... and in these times that's a sure way to success!!

Nicki Haley would be another nightmare for the humans in the US. Neither gender nor race translates into pro human policies. It's time to wake up America!
13
All talk no substance. Where does she stand on the issues that exposed her party's incompetence and dishonesty?
6
Ms. Haley probably stands a better chance of becoming president than ANY woman Democrat. Many of my male friends referred to Hilary Clinton as "the skirt" and that was not meant as a compliment. It represents a mindset still held by many that a woman isn't tough enough to be President. (Trump mentioned Hilary's toughness several times during and after the campaign, even as he trashed her as a liar; now look at who wears the liar's mantle.) A Republican woman will have to break the presidential glass ceiling, then the path will be opened for women of both parties.
1
I read Ms. Haley's book as research for project I was working on. Like many of her kind (Republicans) she loves to denigrate the system that has given her a better life. Her parents left India, like many before them, to find a stable life where hard work pays off and is rewarded. They certainly found it in the United States, due to our strong institutions and regulatory system (which is exactly what India lacks and why they felt they could not start a business there). Ms. Haley and her ilk refuse to admit that what they have been given is very good and seek to destroy what makes us "great." She saw strong institutions and regulations as standing in her way. Despite the fact that her parents had success within this supposedly oppressive system. She is not an intelligent person. She like many of these people go with their "gut." They do not see a big picture. They only focus on what affects them. Their "logic" is something a reasonable person would call, crazy. I hope for the day that she and the rest of these leaches will fall by the way side and people who actually want to help step forward in their place.

Why must we always jump to talk about presidential politics? The last election was just six months ago. The problem with politics, and governance, in the U.S. is that it's become a strategy game that is played 24/7 and year round.
Can we please discuss the performance and policy of our government officials
instead of always trying to get the jump on where they might go from here in their careers. It's not only boring, but never allows us the time to calmly evaluate who they are, what they believe and what they can do for US, their employers.

I see this more as a case of overly binary thinking when it comes to sex and gender than an accurate account of "Ms." Haley.
In other words, and maybe best put in the words of Austin Powers, might it be accurate to say "she's a man, baby?"
Think about it - "she" espouses patriarchal politics, serves its masters, talks like a bellicose man, and plays the oppressor. In an increasingly sophisticated world where we've moved beyond genetic and biological gender assignments, why are we still looking at a thing like "Ms." Haley and referring to it as a woman at all? Are John Kerry, Tim Kaine, Barrack Obama, and Jon Ossof not more a woman than "she" is?
So let's stop defaulting to archaic and narrow conceptions of gender identity shall we? The only people who benefit are macho men like Trump, and wolves in sheep's clothing like macho man "Ms." Haley!

Nothing is scarier to a liberal than a black female conservative. I guess the second scariest is an Indian-American female conservative. The insults posted here are beyond the pale.
Unlike Sarah Plain, she is not just another pretty face (and she is pretty). She is smart, well educated, tough as nails, articulate, and gives fantastic interviews.

She's another Republican who puts party above country, and caters to the wealthy and well-connected. Meh.
1
Archie Bunker likes the "good" ones, and only he sees them, for they are like him.
Why not provide examples to back up your claims of scariness and smartness?
2
So representing the US at the UN is a sufficient foreign policy and national security credential but, for Hillary, serving as the secretary of state is not sufficient to assuage fears of terrorism?
8
This is the person who governed the unchanging state that gave us Dyllan Roof, and now you think she could be presidential? She is part of the good-old-boy network down south; don't let the skin tone and genitalia fool you.
At least she appears to have more brains than Palin. Wouldn't take much.

Two thoughts:
1. South Carolina has the worst schools in the nation but The New York Times writes a Haley puff piece AND NYT Picks chooses comments who say Haley should run for president?
2. On the warning that Haley may aggravate Trump by looking better than he does - everyone in this administration, except for Bannon and Stress Secretary Spicer, looks better than Trump - that's impossible to avoid!

Life has demonstrated too many times that anyone who aligns with typical republican values is not to be trusted. Haley's approach like her boss's and all the other toads is the insane view that if we just take care of the rich and wealthy first (cut their taxes and let them do anything they want), then money and jobs and prosperity will magically trickle down. And of course it never happens.
And war or the threat of it is also good, and the way to settle complex threats. Right, nothing the repubs started in the mideast or Afghanistan has worked over the past 25 years.
And anyone who would work for a dishonest, ignorant fool like trump has to give up the pretense of having actual values and integrity.
Some qualified woman who has knowledge, integrity, decency and experience will get the big job. And a majority of citizens, even in many red states, will vote for her when she runs. Haley is not that person.

"Some qualified woman who has knowledge integrity, decency and experience...." has ALREADY run. And red-state America went insane when she did.
12
Could we stop please with the attempts to whitewash Republicans and make their anti-freedom, anti-planet, anti-human agenda somehow palatable? Aren't they already white enough? We're supposed to give Nikki Haley a pass on throwing in her lot with a horde of fascists because she's a woman?
Never in my life have I wanted to be wrong about something as desperately as I do about this administration. I truly hope this country still exists in 2020, so we can see if this routinely opportunistic Republican hate junkie can continue her rise through the ranks, if that's what you like, but take a look at the current reality. Trumpism is the rottenest thing ever to happen in American politics, rotten from the head down, and rotten right to the core, regardless of gender or any other demographic.
Quit trying to make it seem like anything other than the circus of hate and fear it is and is intended to be. Chances of us surviving it are slim enough as is.

A white authoritarian rigid Christian old guy will always be first in line for GOP seats. Their second choice, for power and greed reasons only, would be a minority authoritarian rigid Christian old guy with the third choice a authoritarian rigid Christian woman like Betsy DeVos. It is possible that Haley type would be a last resort to beat a Dem who seems likely to get too many votes. But only as a last resort!
7
Really, New York Times?
24
Ambassado Haley will never overcome her bonifides of being a gentle woman redneck. She is out-of-place in NYC (and everywhere except SC), and in the meantime, she might think about finding a tailor or new city outfits, and learn how to speak without sounding like a conservative wanting to shut down Planned Parenthood. Her ambitions are like watching a bran owl blinking at life without a clue or realistic thought.
14
And what is wrong with "roomfulls of white men?" You just can't resist judging people by the color of their skin, or their gender, can you?
3
I think you just showed what is wrong: the attitude and limited life experience. Or you wouldn't be asking.
8
Ever since Gov Haley said that "faith based" groups would have to take over social services in SC , where my sister is a social worker, I have not thought of her as a woman of vision or substance or caring. She is now in far over her head, not that Trump or his people care about the UN and Haley's "telling them off" makes them feel so good. I thought she had changed after the vile murders of the black worshipers at Mother Emmanuel and maybe she did. But- do not expect finesse, or a deep understanding of world events. She is one of those right wing so called christians who think because they think it , god wills it.
39
And she does it in high heels and dancing backwards. Too bad she is a Republican.
4
Well, if the day ever comes that she does run for President, I look forward to all of the NYT editorials saying how important it is that we elect a woman to the position, with all of the accompanying comments accusing all of those who oppose her as being sexist, and not just possibly opposed to what she stands for.
10
Ms. Haley is smarter than Palin and more politically experience than Trump, but that's not saying much. The bar for women in the Republican party is pretty low.
That said, she's clearly a capable person. Unfortunately she's aligned with the Tea Party and her politics are typical Republican fare - get rid of unions, favor corporations over employees, etc. And who knows if whites will vote for her.

My strongest opinion is that it would not take any effort to outshine Donald Trump. I would worry about this opinion if I thought Nikki Haley had a snowball's chance in hell of outshining anyone, at any time, in any circumstance. I have always been a strong advocate for women and especially in politics. But I truly have never seen any avenue available to me that would get me to appreciate Ms. Haley for any post in any administration.
14
NYT underestimates the power that Trump has unleased.
No one, including women, needs to be educated, intelligent, credible, politically savvy, respectful, mature or even moral to be the next president or work in the executive branch anymore.
Based on the 2016 election, half of the country automatically qualifies for primaries in 2020; for the other half to qualify, he/she just needs to find an even less educated or moral individual with the capacity to plagiarize former first ladies/first gentlemen with a graduate degree.

Go girl go! She has a shade of Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi.....
1
Worked so well for Clinton, didn't it?
1
Same Nikki Haley booed at the Women in the World summit a week ago. But sure, whatever, America.
She's the ultimate brown person passing for white.
Her name is Nimrata, not Nikki, which wikipedia states is a family nickname.
When did family nicknames become the names we trade on in our political lives? Or is it just convenient enough that it makes her seem white?

so your point is what? she's white, she's black, she's qualified, she's not?
Jimmy Carter
What about her is brown? She is white.
People were telling me the 1st Black president would be a republican, and they were wrong. So, who knows.
2
There is a reason less than 10% of the GOP house is female and that would seem to be her biggest barrier.
4
Will the Democrats follow labor's lead to be a party of hate and unelectablity?
1
Nikki Haley has a long way to go to be competent to be U.S. President. This is speculation. When contrasted with her boss she looks like she has the statesmanship of all of his Predecessors combined. I consider her judgement in taking the job as questionable. To think of her standing beside Donald Trump knowing his nature makes me question her more moderate proclamations while Governor of South Carolina. Steve Bannon knows there is no such thing as a good soldier in Trump's White House. Ruthlessness, stupidity and hubris are the order of the day!
9
Ms. Haley is as incompetent as her boss -- she will be a disaster as Ambassador and a disgraceful and dishonest candidate (if this country is stupid enough to even have a Republican party after this Russian/Wiki leaks debacle). Please spare us any praise for this "person" (forget male or female) -- as a person she is "small" and not very smart, but hey -- Mr. Trump got elected with just those credentials -- terrifying times!
18
speaking of dishonesty, what is the current status of the investigation into the hrc-dnc collaboration to influence the democratic nomination process and presidential election?
The Democratic National Committee is a private organization. Its internal politics are no business of anyone but its members and officers, and certainly do not warrant an "investigation" by anyone else. In particular, there is no reason for an investigation by any public official in his or her official capacity, as seems to be implied.
That is largely true for the hacks directed at the DNC and Clinton campaign officers by what appear to be Russian agents, and release of materials they obtained via WikiLeaks. Those hacks were criminal acts under US law, and certainly should be investigated, primarily by federal law enforcement agencies. To the extent that the perpetrators were foreigners operating from foreign territory, law enforcement options are limited, but US citizens, if implicated, can and should be prosecuted as warranted. This really is no different from a case in which credit card details are illegally obtained from a merchant or card issuer.

Given that the Ignorance Belt of the United States routinely lambastes the UN as a blue-helmeted enemy nation, I'm thinking that Nikki has a great future as a Tupperware spokesperson. On the coasts.
10
"She was this different-looking woman -- nice looking..." Seriously. Every article about a female politician mentions her looks and often how she dresses.
Where was this during the run-up to the presidential election?
"He was a different-looking man -- flabby, orange-faced, with extra-long ties and a comb over of indescribable color. He can play ball with the Russians."

I have carefully listened, with an open mind, to what Haley has publicly stated as U.N. Ambassador and am continually struck by the almost childishly simplistic and near-meaningless statements she makes. She lacks the intellect for the job.
Give me a Susan Rice any day of the week.
Give me a Susan Rice any day of the week.
29
For anybody watching this parlor game, keep up. She is definitely dealing herself in and has been as early as taking down the confederate flag after the death of the Charleston 9. Jaded? Definitely.
3
I'm betting on Ivanka. The Trump administration is not strategically placing her in all these cabinet-level meetings for absolutely no reason. With a platform like "my father was elected with absolutely NO experience", she will secure the White House by a landslide. If a woman's knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience alone were key to capturing the White House, Trump wouldn't be POTUS #45. I didn't vote for Hillary because I wanted to, I did so because she was the most qualified of the two candidates. Clearly, being qualified means nothing as a man with absolutely no political experience, learns on the job, with American lives hanging in the balance, in his first-ever political position in his 70-year life, the highest political office in the U.S.
8
based on the majority trend of the comments I read, it seems that many don't understand that intolerance of someone based on their political beliefs is no different than intolerance based on religion, race, sex, sexual preference or identification or any other reason. intolerance based on political beliefs is still intolerance and makes you the same as those you decry for similiar behavior.
3
When the substance of that politcal belief, if realised in practice, would deny a fellow citizen the right to exist unharrassed, the proper term is "opposition". Not "intolerance".
Same Republican tough talk Nothing new new about Haley in substance.
5
Rubio-Haley ticket would have been far more successful than the testosterone-fueled corrupt and incompetent mess we have now. Mystery how and why Americans shun competence and intellect over mediocrity and showmanship.
6
You lost me by pointing out she was endorsed by Sarah Palin and the teaparty. Besides she's still a republican. We need a president who is capable of bringing the United States into the 21st century while reducing income inequality. I could care less about their gender or race as long as they put the well-being of the country ahead of partisan politics.
8
clearly not a democratic president then
Oh please, Nikki Haley is a robot, just churning out the usual, routine accusations against the Russians, the Iranians and everyone else the U.S. wishes to dominate in one way or another. Such pre-programmed pronouncements at the U.N. do not qualify her to be anything other than a spokesperson.
What would it take to get a woman elected to the U.S. presidency?
1. Belated recognition by the Democrat party bosses that 'change' really means 'change', i.e., very often the best candidate just happens to be a woman, so get behind her!
2. The 'right' woman, e.g., Elizabeth Warren rather than Hillary Clinton, to recapture the populist message.

Routine accusations against Iran? The #1 terror country in the world is North Korea. The very close #2 terror country is your country.
Sure, Joseph, just keep repeating the propaganda until even you believe it. Ever heard of George Orwell?
Union basher? Gun advocate? No foreign policy expertise and yet a UN ambassador? This is a woman we should admire, as she tried to learn on the job? As for belatedly supporting the removal of the Confederate flag after the church massacre, I seem to remember this Republican governor also dismissed any notion that stricter gun control might have prevented it.
25
Oh, COME ON!
Haley is utterly unqualified to be UN Ambassador, having NO relevant qualifications in diplomacy, international affairs, foreign policy, etc. She's basically a mouthpiece, repeating prepared statements and asserting thinks like, "this is unacceptable"! (And exactly WHAT has she done in her role to warrant such speculation about being "presidential"?)
She *may* have been a competent governor -- but maybe not -- and so might have been a legit choice for a DOMESTIC post (Interior, Eduction, Commerce...), but for UN Ambassador, this one of Trump's "out-of-left-field" choices!
But in being tapped as governor by the Republican power-brokers, Haley was basically a woman promoted by the devious Republicans to show that they're not sexist and not discriminatory--this is typical of their cynical, manipulative approach in a number of cases. Remember, Elizabeth Dole? Katherine Harris? Joni Ernst? Bobby Jindal? Marco Rudio? And of course the "great" Sarah Palin!
The Republicans are masters at manipulating gender and race to bamboozle voters into thinking a candidate / the Party overall is not as hostile as it really is to women, minorities, people not born in the USA, 'intellectuals,' and working people.
It's all part of their manipulation and deception. As the article itself says: "Ms. Haley also knows how to deploy her gender to advantage." Remember when THE SAME thing was said about the darling-of-the-moment, Sarah Palin?

Of course, if she does run for President, progressives will claim she's not a "real woman."
1
Oh Snap!
No, that seem to be mostly a conservative ploy.
1
when given the tools of warfare at ones ready disposal,
it is the easiest thing in the world to start a war.
if-ever Ms. Haley demonstrates the slightest ability to
conceive of, search out, negotiate and establish any lasting peace,
then and only then should a presidential offering be considered.
oh,
what a minute,
forgot that she belongs to the republican't party ...
never mind, then.
sorry

Keep in mind that Haley is sitting in the rotating presidency this month on the UN Security Council, so her profile is high for April. She planned this moment to make a big splash, with the help of her spokesman, a former Fox News reporter. She's about to hold a debate on human rights as Trump just met with a big human-rights abuser, Egypt. She is cutting peacekeeping missions to build a name for herself as a reformer but she's never even been to a mission and skipped a Security Council trip to West Africa while she instead tweeted what she was watching on TV. Her spokesman won't say who she reports to in DC, even though American taxpayers deserve to know such basics. Don't we pay her salary? She criticizes the Iran deal that Obama worked out even as one of South Carolina's biggest employers is Boeing, which is about to sell many Dreamliners to Iran. Plus she works for a man who denigrates women in the basest way. And she picked the Heritage Foundation, hardly a bastion for women's rights, to represent the US officially at the UN's annual women's conference.
10
She told the UN Human Right's Commission to pound sand because of their obsession with Israel. That's good enough for me.
And for all the complainers here, it's really not about her connection to Donald Trump. It's all about her being a Republican.
And by the way, she credits Hillary Clinton (yes, Hillary Clinton) for encouraging her as a woman to enter politics. And hopefully, Hillary will be around long enough to get her dream - the first woman president. And that would be Nikki Haley.

No, it will be someone who has a Resume that is Highly Competitive on The World Market. No employee in/with the current White House, has this kind of Resume, which includes Nikki Haley.
Nice to see we're already talking about another president. The third person to get on a city bus would be better than Donald.
7
"There is a risk, though, in relying on crowd-pleasing one-liners." Indeed there is - a huge risk to the country, and as we are seeing now, to the entire world. Donald Trump's substance-free, ignorance-abetting chants riled up his though-free supporters and "won" him the presidency (if you don't count the actual votes). Within 100 days of assuming the presidency, he has brought us to the brink of a global war.
I'm sorry, but having listened to some of her vapid bluster from the UN floor there is no way I could consider her presidential material. Samantha Power was an exemplary UN rep - intelligent, well spoken, on message (note that Haley's greatest praise is coming from her contradicting the Trump administration's stated policies - such as they are), yet I seem to recall no similar effusive praise. Haley is a cagey and opportunistic politician - I guess if that's what it takes, well, then you're welcome to her.
11
Embracing her inner Democrat, running as a Democrat or Progressive, rejecting those policies she correctly believes should not have been adopted and thereby gingerly at least partly rejecting her predecessor, whose full-throated support she will completely retain, Ivanka Trump is likely to be the first female President of the United States. You heard it here first.
2
Whether male or female, an independent thinker (not Ms. Haley) with not only good leadership qualities, but an understanding of our Constitution and the values of equality and liberty (not a Republican) and a sense of morality (not D. Trump for all three) would be a better choice.
2
How about simply being a good candidate? That means having a coherent platform and actually running on it. (Trump is a bad guy doesn't count.) A study of the Clinton campaign found that almost all her ads were entirely policy free. That's not going to work. Hillary Clinton did not lose because she was a woman; Nikki Haley will not win because she had some official position doing some official. No one cares if you're a "foreign policy expert" or not. It's doesn't work that way, which is something the Clinton campaign rejects that have filled the ranks of CNN and MSNBC have yet to come to terms with.
1
Two points: First, it's not clear to me that she has been following Trump's lead. Unless I'm wrong about the sequence of events, she took a tough stand against Assad and Russia before it was clear that the winds were changing at the White House. It was that departure from the apparent White House line that gave her the initial higher profile in the media. Second, to come out against the Confederate flag in any way whatsoever in the deep South takes gumption. Just ask Roy Barnes here in Georgia. I, for one, would welcome her contribution to our politics in the years ahead. I'm sure I don't share her views on many issues, but we need good people on both sides of the aisle if we're to preserve the republic.
It does not matter if Nikki Haley talks tough about Russia, the UN, or whomever. She has shown she does not have the courage of her convictions.
As a sitting governor, she denounced the hate coming from Trump, including his reluctance to walk away from David Duke's endorsement. Now she reports to and defends Trump.
Haley would have us believe that she and Trump had normal political differences - but what she expressed was moral revulsion. No person, of any gender, who would drop an ethical stance so quickly deserves to rise in power.

Haley will be the GOP 2020 nominee if the GOP sees looming catastrophic loses in 2020 and jettisons Trump or the 2024 nominee if Trump wins a second term.
Many reasons:
She is telegenic and speaks with that lilting southern drawl that drives middle aged white men (the key GOP demographic) crazy.
She comes from a deep red state and has skillfully tap danced around her Tea Party loyalties and credentials to appear as a moderate.
She is a woman and an ethnic minority, so that steals two demographics from Democrats.
She can use Trump as a foil to show that she, and she alone, is the true face of the modern Republican Party and not the GOP of the 1950s.
She can point to prior governing experience, in contrast to Trump's lack thereof.

The problem Ms. Haley will always face: she agreed to be part of Trump's team, knowing that there was strong evidence he came to power with the help of an American adversary, Russia, a country who's leader has made it clear, in past years to want to bring US down to our knees, and bring his country back up to USSR standards. Her best bet would have been to have run for the Senate, House, or bide her time. When Trump and Co., are eventually found guilty of crimes against our country, she will forever be tied to the worst scandal in US history. This association, which she freely made, will be her downfall for any higher political ambitions she may have.
7
And yet Keaton Dawson, former chairman of the state’s Republican Party, first recollection of her was that "She was this different-looking woman — nice looking - "
5
Nikki Haley is articulate, smart ~ actually very smart. She is an excellent speaker with talking points and facts on the ready. She has a successful political track record of being pro-active and sincere: bottom line is Nikki Haley doesn't make it up as she goes. She is most certainly a very capable leader who would be an excellent choice for the first US woman president. She is an American woman who ought to have the respect and support of all American women. Except the cats who want to meow, and show claws.
Nikki Haley has a tough job working for the most idiotic, insidious President that we've ever had. That said, she does herself no favors by not insisting on a consistent message from the White House to speak to. I would never back her as a candidate for anything since I don't agree with her politics. Women like Haley always make me embarrassed to be a woman because of their lack of compassion and ethos.
103
Anyone associated with or living in Trumpworld should not be considered presidential material. They have all demonstrated that they'll sell their souls to a self-absorbed, chronically-lying, insecure ignoramus for power and access.
176
No chance anyone in the federal government is motivated by a desire for public service, to better the nation, to serve the people or any other noble purpose. How pathetic.
1
She's still a Republican.

intolerance of a person based on politics is no different than intolerance based on religion, race, gender or sexual preference. it's still intolerance and that makes you no better than the people you criticize for their intolerance. when your side finally gets that, then we can sit down and work together.
She's still a woman.
That has nothing to do with it. I don't care about her gender. I care about the fact that she belongs to a political party that is ideologically and morally compromised, and thus anything she proposes will be ideologically and morally compromised.
Niki Haley for president? Where did that come from?
57
Representative, State Governor, and now UN Ambassador for the United States...more qualifications than he current one.
It's a great idea and her election to POTUS would once and for all crush the liberal argument that HRCs defeat was based in misogyny.
The part of Russia Palin can see from her doorstep.
I'll say this much for her - she doesn't seem insane like the current occupant of the WH.
16
No, not insane- but absolutely certain of her opinions that must never deviate from the so called Christian right and yet very much out of her depth.
6
That sounds like a campaign slogan: "Vote for Nikki, she's not insane like the rest of them"!
6
She's anti-union. That's enough insanity for me. But 'not as insane as the current occupant of the WH" is a low bar indeed. But granted, she reaches it. Small comfort.
11
My impression was that she parroted Trump's incoherent gibberish to the UN and then parroted his opposite gibberish when he changed his windmill blades.
73
Thank you for an interesting analysis.
I was struck by the assertion that (in the United States) people still believe that a woman cannot be as strong or effective as man when dealing with "national security issues" and that this could prevent a woman like Nikki Haley from one day becoming president of the United States. How this still makes sense in a country that put a very tough Secretary of State in Hillary Clinton in charge of foreign policy for several years is unclear to me.
More generally, one wonders how it is that Germans (Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany since 2004) and Lithuanians (Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of Lithuania since 2009), not to mention many others, can accept that women are equally capable of being strong leaders while Americans, who often pride themselves on being in the vanguard of humanity, cannot?

Hillary was not a particularly good example, given how wrong she was on Russia, Syria, Libya, and Egypt.
Condi Rice is a better example of a tough-as-nails woman who is brilliant and refined. She can play concert piano for the queen, talk football with Jerry Rice, speak fluent Russian with the ambassador, and can smack down anyone who dares cross her.

2
are you actually saying Angela Merkel is capable and doing a good job? you didn't really say that did you?
Yep, that's exactly what I said. Chancellor Merkel will go down in history as cautious (generally speaking), competent and tough-minded, while also being clear-headed about Germany's past and its relationship with Russia and the Soviet Union prior to 1990.
4
She sold her soul to have a job that would give her foreign policy cred and a shot at the presidency one day.
Of course, I could be wrong. She may not have had a soul to sell.

You want to know how a woman will reach the White House? Simple.
Step 1: GOP House continues to dither, delay, obfuscate and ignore obvious evidence that Trump is incompetent and must be impeached.
Step 2: Dems re-take House in 2018, riding a wave of national disgust with this display of GOP indifference to our nation's security and safety.
Step 3: Trump and Pence are immediately impeached, and Nancy Pelosi becomes president.

If Trump and Pence were to be impeached, Paul Ryan becomes president.
....and then you woke up!

Right.
And Amelia Earhart will fly Jim Morrison in for the inaugural.
And Amelia Earhart will fly Jim Morrison in for the inaugural.
Her work so far at the UN has been shockingly bad. I expected more, but she is doubling down on the ill-informed, chest pounding statements of her boss. Seems like she is trying to prove something rather than learning the ropes, adhering to values and principles, and trying to build relationships.
84
It shouldn't be a surprise that her performance to date is shockingly bad. She has absolutely NO qualifications for the job.
Of course, in that, she is a perfect fit for the current administration.
Of course, in that, she is a perfect fit for the current administration.
2
We shall see, and listen. So far, she appears to be the classic mean girl, just like PALIN. Therefore, perfect for Trump. I wish her, and US, the best of luck. Seriously.
As governor Nikki Haley showed tenacity, courage and a determination to do what she saw as the right thing. She has also shown she can be a fast learner, appears to be thoughtful, authentic and not afraid to stake out a position and articulate it with a nuance her boss is incapable of.
So in summary, she is smart and informed as well as authentic and relatable, which makes her very different from Palin on the one end and Clinton on the other. She will continue to learn in her current job and therefore absolutely has potential to lead her party. An idiot and an unlikeable wonk are not harbingers of the likelihood of a woman occupying the Oval office.

5
Yes. "I'll take my high heels to . . . ' is really relatable, informed, and very authentic too. I guess the smart depends on the heels. I apologize for the last quip and bringing it down to the superficial, not unlike Katon Dawson (who mentions her looks first in the quote). Would that the good old boys would recognize that being male does not ensure foreign policy credentials.
What's refreshing in this article is that there is no mention of her husband, if any.
16
If she was a Democrat with any aspirations toward the White House, you can bet the Republicans would be digging into her husband's background, looking for dirt. They claimed Geraldine Ferraro's husband was a contractor in deep with the mob, and they held Hillary Clinton responsible for her husband's sexual sins, and in a twisted way, critcized her for not divorcing him at the same time blasting her for "being mean" to his bimbos.
If Mother Theresa was alive and ran for office as a Democrat, Republicans would find or invent some scandal about her, too!

2
I will never vote for her. I do not like poseurs for either ideological side of the spectrum. She is all talk and not substance. Trying to be strong when she does not know an iota of foreign policy. I know a demagogue when I see it. Do not care for any one regardless of gender that is as callous and superficial as she is.
167
Now we know why Hillary lost. Nothing to do with misogyny.
Typical of a DJT appointee: no expertise in the area of appointment. Keep the world guessing, I suppose.
7
She does not write her own speeches.
Even in this highly partisan Senate, she was overwhelmingly confirmed. She is gracious and well-spoken, yet tough. She says at this point she cannot imagine running for President. We have great representation at the United Nations now with her as Ambassador. Let us watch with interest and see what she can accomplish. Even this piece points to her many very positive qualities--yet why not give her chance without the underlying snarkiness? And this was written by a woman no less!!
9
Being gracious and well-spoken are great southern qualifications for a 1950's PTA secretary. She was another one of the Trumps unqualified appointments. In her case, he appointed a woman to a job he cared nothing about because he needed to appoint a few women somewhere. "Watching with interest and seeing what can be accomplished" is Republican code language for defending grossly inadequate appointments. Haley should not be in the UN.
5
For citizens of the world's greatest superpower, Americans are surprisingly parochial. While we have been focusing obsessively on who will be the first woman to reach the White House, most other countries have moved beyond that.
The UK has a woman in No. 10 Downing Street. And she is not the first. The trail was blazed by Maggie Thatcher (the iron lady) who is studiously ignored by American feminists because she was politically incorrect. Thatcher reciprocated their disdain and was a stalwart opponent of any form of affirmative action for women. She did it her way.
She was no slouch in foreign policy either. She reacted swiftly and decisively when the Argentinean junta seized the Falkland Islands while many of her ministers wrung their hands and even the Reagan Administration ("the second most important man in my life") kept its distance.
She was a no-nonsense anti-communist and took no nonsense from other European leaders either. "I want my money back", she told them on one occasion.
As George H W Bush mulled over what to do in response to Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait in August 1990 – to repel Saddam militarily or not – Thatcher told him in an aside, “Remember George, this is no time to go wobbly.”
So I wish the best to Niki Haley. If she needs a role model, she should look across the Atlantic (not that her role model ever needed a role model). It's the lady with the handbag (which she wielded to deadly effect) who had no peer when it came to foreign policy.

The funny thing about feminists is that they only like women on the left of the political spectrum.
I predicted that the first British Prime Minister would come from the Conservative Party -- not from Labour where all the feminists were located. My college classmates laughed at me but I was right.
I predict that our fist female president will be a Republican. She will be someone (like Maggie Thatcher) who made it on her own and not on her husband's coattails (like Hillary).

Ambassador Haley has been the least covered member of the current administration. This has nothing to do with her gender but, rather, her smooth, forceful competence and the sheer credibility she radiates when she speaks. She stands in such sharp contrast with the prevailing themes of this administration: confusion, incompetence, and chaos which are getting all the coverage at the moment. There are only so many minutes in television newscasts and only so many column inches in print devoted to presidential news.
Will a woman in the role go on to be president? Jeane Kirkpatrick, Madeleine Albright, Susan Rice and Samantha Power have held this position. Of these only one, Ms. Albright, went on to break a career barrier when she became Secretary of State.
Presidential candidate, Adlai Stevenson, served in this role but only after two failed campaigns for president. Bill Richardson ran for president after his days as U.N. Ambassador but failed in the primaries. Thus far, only one president has held this position: George H.W. Bush.
Thus it's difficult to make the case that being our Ambassador to the U.N. is a particularly useful path to the presidency.

Right! As there is so little of substance that the position can provide. HW had other accomplishments, but being the VP was crucial. Haley could easily not get anything meaningful done, under the King of Chaos, as her role as Gov is sketchy...leaving her with nothing to actually run on...
I believe Ms. Haley is someone to watch and be wary of in future presidential elections. However, she has left enough of a track record in South Carolina to show that she is, in the long run, just another classic modern Republican.
Should she enter a presidential campaign in a nice little package pretending to be something other than that, she should be returned to sender.

"Her future political viability may depend on a tricky balancing act: how well she can position herself as distinct from Mr. Trump without seeming insubordinate."
No, her American presidential future will become very clear as soon as many American women and men realize that she signed a law in South Carolina outlawing abortion at 20 weeks - *including* in the cases of rape and incest.
'S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley signs law banning abortion at 20 weeks': http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/25/politics/sc-abortion-bill/
"Any physician who violates the law is guilty of a misdemeanor offense and faces a maximum sentence of three years imprisonment plus a potential fine."
We know all about Nikki Haley since we're close by in Georgia (she'd fit right in with much of our legislature, too). Don't be fooled by the "I'm a voice of reason" act - or the gender.

And she ignored the racist state flag of her state until she could do that no longer. Sorry, she's a good old boy in women's clothing. Nothing to see here. Definitely nothing to vote for.
9
The vast majority of Americans believe that there should be no elective abortions after 20 weeks? Why? Because that's just around the time fetal viability commences. There's are reason why very liberal countries like France only allow abortions in the first trimester.
Although I'm a Democrat and pro-choice, even I have to ask: why would it take 20 weeks to make a decision about abortion? At 23 weeks a fetus is already viable. Yes, at that point it's murder. And there are many people who think one day is murder.
Progressives, choose your battles carefully. Abortion after 20 weeks will win you no supporters.

As the alt-right demands outsiders to challenge the status quo, it's hard to imagine a UN ambassador surviving the primary process.
3
She wasn't an especially popular governor of South Carolina, and that crossed party lines.
25
Yes, she only won the election for governor twice.

Dr. Holman raises a good point in noting that “In many ways, Donald Trump and Sarah Palin had similar levels of knowledge about how the world works—she was enormously punished for it." We absolutely need to strive as a society to hold men and women to the same standards. We also need for our public servants to understand how the world works. The obvious solution here is not to elevate an unqualified women to the position currently held by an unqualified man, but to remove the unqualified man. We need to level, not lower, the playing field, and there are plenty of highly qualified women in this country who should be supported instead of the Palins, Trumps, and Haleys advocated here.
16
People who are good at what they do get noticed, regardless of what they look like. Nikki is just one great example.
5
What Nikki Haley has, that Sarah Palin appears to lack, are intelligence and dignity.
7
A person with dignity would never work for Trump.
8
So, Niki Haley is a woman. Let's judge her by what she does. This articles mentions widely held, but not necessarily true, thoughts about what women are like. We will have a true democracy in the US when people are judged by their actions and not by their sex.
100
What does individuals' attitudes about gender have to do with our governmental system? We can pass all the laws known to humanity to declare people equal, but it won't necessarily change peoples' opinions.
It just continues to amaze me how NYT readers seem to think that government has this magical power to legislate change in peoples' hearts and minds without any proof that all the laws on books have succeeded in doing so. Are the laws that Trump and Co. in Congress passing right now changing your mind at all? Nope. Didn't think so.

As a South Asian myself growing up in the South like Ms. Haley, I have to admire her grit and political savvy even though I don't agree with her politics. It's hard to look past her not embracing her full identity (e.g., not using her given name and her conversion to Christianity). However, for immigrants these are practical choices and not entirely irrational. She may make a great presidential candidate in the future, and then I would expect that she will embrace her "otherness" since it would suit her politically. She is after all a politician.
14
A curious point of view: apparently a person, south asian, who converts to Christianity, is by that action not embracing her full identity. So to be logically consistent: should we regard, for example, a European raised as a Christian from childhood who converts from Christianity (to agnosticism, or atheism, or Hinduism, or whatever) as rejecting their identity? One's religion early in life is a person's true identity? Interesting idea. Of course another point of view is that later in life one can discover more about one's true identity, and a religious conversion is not necessarily a lack of embracing of self.
2
"Conversion" to agnosticism? What's that? It's characteristic of religious apologetics to regard every worldview as somehow equivalent to faith. Atheism is not a religion. Hinduism is indeed a religion but as far as I know, it does not require any particular ritual of conversion. Christianity, on the other hand, comes with a whole baggage of intolerance, exclusivity, and especially in the US, disdain for other faiths and traditions. Judaism regards coverts with suspicion and I would indeed count conversion to (especially evangelical) Christianity as a black mark against Ms. Hayley and a betrayal of her roots.
Not using one's given name. Gotta say, that's been the American story of assimilation since at least as far back as when the Irish and the Italians were the immigrants that native-born Americans were railing against. At least Ms. Haley made this decision herself, rather than some immigration officer at Ellis Island or Angel Island.
4
Not sure this "presumption" is so widely held:
" ... she is still up against the underlying presumption that men are stronger on foreign policy than women."
Arguably, Hillary Clinton's bellicosity is nothing more than an effort to appear as tough as a man would be. But I took her at her word when she voted for the Iraq War, pressed Obama to intervene more forcefully in Libya, and vowed to declare (and, presumably, enforce) a "no-fly zone" over Syria.
If Clinton were president now, she'd probably have had the US intervene in Syria even more than Trump has, but she would not have leaned on China with respect to North Korea. If so, would the US be better off in either place?

She has all the attributes the GOP admires: she has no compassion, she opposes tax increases, she's anti-education, anti-health care...what's not to like? Just look at her record as SC governor, where she demonstrated all the above traits.
And two days after the AME massacre-after consulting with her handlers-she came out for taking the confederate flag down...and even managed to cry.
She's a natural.

Her rhetoric is way too heated, and her credentials non-existent.
Don't turn it into a gender story, please.
She's as dangerous as John Bolton.
Rapier tongues and ignorance are not the provence of one gender.
And why are we talking about a presidential run, when we aren't even six months into the Trump presidency debacle?
Right now I'm listening to people talk about nuclear war with North Korea.
Utter madness.
But Ms. Haley is deeply involved in the madness.
As I posted elsewhere, she's too young to remember the Cuban Missile crisis.
She might modify her mouth if she had lived through it, as I did.
Like Palin, she photographs. Is that going to be our measure of her?

I agree. But that's a hopeless wish.
I agree. But that's a hopeless wish.
She did serve as the governor of South Carolina for 6 years.
As governor:
She got the Confederate Flag to come down.
She pushed for, and got, a death sentence for the white supremacist that murdered 9 people in church for being black.
She appointed an African American (Tim Scott) to serve as one of SC's US Senators. He got himself reelected to the Senate.
She has given speeches that walk the tight rope between welcoming immigrants to America and having some legitimate concerns about illegal immigration, without ever descending into racism or xenophobia.
She might be the only politician I am aware of that continually impresses me.

The problem is too many voters are too young to remember the Cuban missile Crisis, the Cold War, brown air, rivers on fire. the draft. And they don't learn about it in school.

Only a few months ago, while she was governor of the state where I live, South Carolina, Nikki Haley was the quintessential southern Republican. Refused federal help to increase Medicaid in this poor state, refused to allow refugees to be settled here (the federal government settled a few anyway), presided over the education system that U.S. News and World Report recently called the very worst in the nation, and personally sponsored (using her official stationery to publicize) a fervent Christian rally. Depending on your point of view, all this may be good or bad.
444
Sharon, I agree with this southern view. Haley governed as a political opportunist in SC, and is currently taking advantage of the exposure. She appears to be a good communicator and quick study compared to the self-serving, incompetent, disrespectful, oligarchs stumbling to lead other parts of this administration, including the chief executive. But the UN leadership seat is not known as a springboard to higher office. I believe she will have her moments in the sun, but deserves to sink with the rest of the despicable rats on this Trumpship.
31
It's bad. Real bad.
13
Presidential material, indeed. That's some serious Republican street cred. If she runs, she is sure to win the primary.
2
Indeed, Nikki Haley's trial in outshining Trump's ignominy ought not be that difficult, as he is such a proud ignoramus, full of hate and prejudices, our divider-in-chief intent in destroying established order. While I feel proud to see a woman representing the U.S. in the UN, I still do not understand how, after belittling Trump when a candidate, has allowed herself to make amends and work under his 'tutelage', while recognizing her role as protector of human rights, an antithesis of Trump's cruelty towards the least among us. That Trump's ego won't tolerate anybody to outdo him, is our loss. If he were really as smart as he says he is, and being so ignorant about the facts, and reality, and that truth will always outshine his lies, he would have surrounded himself with folks smarter, and more honest, than himself. For now, at least, lets hope that Nikki shows, with no doubts, that a woman can outshine any man anywhere anytime.
4
is anything she will continue to prove that some women are just as bad as any male
Perhaps by working for Trump, she can help move him in the right direction.
I thought I was looking at the first women president when Haley won the South Carolina governorship. Now getting foreign policy experience at the UN fills the box that most governors lack when running for president. Nothing in ever certain in politics especially with a wild card like Trump but if Haley can do her current job well I even more certain that she may be a future president.
30
Hopefully President of something like the Rotary Klub and not the USA. Mercy.
8
I am going to self-immolate if Nikki haley becomes the first female president. And I'm a female of Indian origin.
Nikki Haley got the UN job because her successor (Lt. Governor) in South Carolina was an early DJT supporter and it was more rewarding him than her
24
I was never a fan of Nikki Haley, and this recent comment (her response to Sean Spicer's brilliant "Hitler didn't use chemical weapons") still has my jaw dropping. I would love to have a woman President, but not this woman.
"It's unfortunate and we should never have comparisons with Hitler ever," Haley told CNN. "That was a terrible time in history and it's just not something people want to hear about or think about or think there's another comparison to it."

People do need to hear and think about Hitler so that we don't repeat history - 'never forget' 6 million died because of Hitler - US Holocaust Museum -- https://www.ushmm.org Haley's statement just as stupid as Spicer's if not more so.
4
Get serious, she is the lipstick on the pig. Her entire job is to convince the UN that Donald Trump's fantasy based ravings and actions are somehow logical and sound. How is she not Baghdad Bob or Hanoi Hannah? She's the same as her boss, will say anything to get what she wants.
93
The liberal obsession: a minority woman "in a roomful of white men!"
Oh the horror!
But guess what: Nikki Haley doesn't care one bit. A person with her poise and self-possession is not even aware of it. (It takes a liberal to point it out - but there aren't too many liberals in her political circle, and she is certainly glad of that.)

Nikki Haley is a rank amateur at her job and I have some respect for her but diplomacy and statecraft is NOT her strong suit.
43
Talking already about presidential aspirations? Could we just focus on the here and now. This woman, a creature of South Carolina and all its republican neocon warts, is announcing that she is keeping a list, taking names, not wearing high heels as a fashion statement but to use when Israel is criticized, ready to take on any of those other namby, pamby 180 plus countries that stand up to the military colossal at her disposal, eager to be seen as the toughest homo sapien in the building. Got that Russia? China? Iran? France? Germany? But watch a photo-op with Trump and she looks like a love lost damsel looking into her lover's eyes.
44
Do you say the same about a male cabinet member in front a president?! Such sexism!
1
Your concern is for the "boys' club" when this woman is unfit for and has no business in this job?!
89
She's running for Rex's job first and then sit it out for a year beforthe primaries begin.

". . . a graph showing that white Republicans and Democrats who were the most worried about terrorism were less likely to vote for Hillary Clinton. “If you see the world as a dangerous place, we need this strong father, strong man to protect us,” she said. "
I do not believe the above statement in a New York heartbeat. The reason many people I know who did not vote for Mrs. Clinton was because they did not trust her . . . for whatever reason. Credibility means a great deal and so far, Mrs. Haley seems to be bringing that element to the table on a consistent basis. The fact that Mrs. Haley is political polished, as in her refusal to answer the question about running for POTUS and merely stated ". . . she has deflected questions about her future by saying she is concentrating on her current job".
Thus far, Mrs. Haley is holding her own while mixing it up with members of "the Boys’Club". No one, including members of the GOP, ever thought Donald Trump would be President. As proven, anything is possible in that whacky world of politics. My money is on Mrs. Haley . . . at the moment.

Did you find it odd that the consummate liar Trump was believed to be more honest? He lies continuously, cheats contractors and students, spouts nonsense as truth and yet was viewed to be more honest because he was non PC?
23
These days NB, I find everything President Trump does as odd and terrifying. Good point.

@N B The thing is, Trump delivers his outrages in a style that makes you laugh - "Holy cow, there he goes again. What a goof!", whereas Clinton sounds so sincere and at the same time was so inconsistent over her career that the feeling is "Why is she lying so baldly at me - that's insulting."
I believe that the majority of the electorate votes based on feelings rather than cold analysis, and for that reason HRC will never win a national election. How could she have been so close to a recognized political genius - her husband - and have none of his moxie rub off?

“She was this different-looking woman — nice looking — and I’m not surprised at her success. She can play ball with the good old boys.”
That pretty much says it all.
Aside from looking at the capable Nikki Haley from a 1950s mindset, I think it's too early to make a call on her future. She makes some large strong statements, but they do not seem to be informed by a deep knowledge base or ideology at this time. Not her fault, she has virtually no experience in international politics. Like just about every other Trump appointee in their respective fields.

What is obnoxious, is how republican high profile woman as Ms. Haley think they are trailblazers because they are ascending within the GOP, she in particular has the added advantage of being a minority. The media enables them by writing glowing stories about how they ascend in such a hostile environment. Even more ironically, if Ms. Haley were a white male, she likely would never have stood out in GOP. The GOP uses people like Ms. Haley to prove they are not sexist or racist, and Ms. Haley cannot be faulted for taking advantage. But, one must only look at democratic woman and how they are treated by men, in particular from the GOP to see that the same republican woman are being complicit in the GOPs sexist and racist actions and statements as they stand behind the GOP without fail. One must only look at Ms. Haley's predecessor to emphasize this point. The democratic party puts to shame what republicans call an openness to a diverse party leadership, and I say this knowing the DNC has it's share of issues.

If she were a white man, she would still stand out, consider:
Got the Confederate Flag taken down in SC.
Got a White Supremacist sentenced to death for the Charleston church massacre.
Appointed an African-American (Tim Scott) to be US Senator from SC. He got himself repeatedly re-elected in his own right.
Pro-immigrant, but believes immigration laws should be enforced.
Stands up to Russia at the UN.
This is a politician with some real substance.
Haley continually impresses me. I can't think of any other politicians that continually do this.

I don't care that she is a 'she' and a 'person of color'. Our UN representative is professional, dignified, well spoken and effective with a commanding presence. These endless articles full of what ifs and maybes are insulting to all women. Let our UN rep succeed on merit and keep setting high standards. As to Trump keeping her on a short leash, the opposite appears to be the case.

so far she has proven to be a mouthpiece all bark and no bite. Can wait until her hopefully eventual political demise just like Palin.

When it comes to women and power, they can't find anything to say other than "She may be president, and may be not". That is pathetic.
In other words, all Republican women are the same, and forget that 1st woman president thingy if one is nominated for president by the Republicans.
1
Haley is another in the line of chicken hawks who denounce and threaten. She has joined the full throated anti Russia hysteria. Its amazing the inflexible uniformity that the Neo Con crowd have over the news media and politicians. Ugly regime change led by al Qaeda jihadists has created this chemical weapon controversy. Haley daily makes bellicose unsubstantiated accusations. Trump is certainly the most mercurial presidents in US history. His jump from being seen as a Putin mole to an absurd anti Putin martinet is dizzying.
15
And she is apposing Trump by merely stating her position. Republicans need a woman as a public face. Let's hope that protects her from Trump and the crazy Republican power hungry ideologues.

Wouldn't be a kick to the "left hemisphere" is she were to become the first female POTUS?
PS: ... and who was allowed to outshine the previous occupant of the White House? Hillary the travel writer?

I think Ms. Haley is a sincere and competent person. What would be more of a "kick" to all of us is if she ends up "thrown under the bus" like Colin Powell for being the unwitting face of a misguided and dangerous foreign policy.
9
FYI: I live in the "left hemisphere" and I would be very happy to see a strong, smart and capable woman like Nikki Haley emerge as a national leader. Contrary to popular belief, most of us on the left wish to see our country succeed, and the only way that will happen is if some smart new leaders emerge on both sides. People who truly represent the population of this country. In my opinion, the only thing that needs a good hard kick out the door is the good old white boys club that is sitting around the white house right now.

I know you'd rather not go there, but President Trump hires her.
4
All true, but too early to tout Nikki for an office that's at least eight years away.
The more likely scenario would be Secretary of State for Trump's second term, assuming mentoring and blessing from a proud and approving Tillerson. Then continuing under President Ivanka as SOS for another 8, finally creating the right conditions for a credible pitch in 2032 for America's second woman President, and also second consecutive woman President, when Ms. Haley will be a fit and wise 60.
Expect both Bobby Jindal and also a greying Bharara at the inauguration, with one vying to be Attorney General and the other Supreme Court Justice. Plenty of turbans among the crowds too, making the job of professional cameramen a living nightmare. Trump and Obama seated also, yes, but it's anybody's guess if they break-out into a brawl about who had bigger attendance size.
Ms. Haley is looking at many worn high-heels between now and 2032, but that's something we know she enjoys taking in stride. Stay tuned (or not).

Definitely NOT!

Too early for "an office that's at least eight years away"? Seriously, TMK, do you think Trump is going to be in office for 8 years? The way he and his administration are going, I'd be surprised if they make if to 8 months.

@EA
Yes, easily. Learn to take NYT bemoaning with huge fists of salt. Fact is, with leaderless Democrats digging their hole deeper and deeper, Trump has no opposition. Which means he can delegate to his heart's content, spend as much time at the golf course as he wants. Heck, at this rate, Trump is on track to becoming the first work-from-home President of the USA. No kidding.

The Right in this country certainly doesn't have a problem with women running for office. I think Thatcher, who was far, far more popular here than at home, broke the ice. Then came Palin, the darling of the alt-right.
I suppose that's progress. I don't know.

Yeah
look at how well the English are doing after Thatcher...the only thing they are proud is the Malvines war...the poor middle class that so loved her are paying the price

With respect to 2024, Governor/Ambassador Haley may be well positioned.
Of course in politics, a week is a long time, and 2024 is a far in the future.
It is something like walking a tightrope over a pool full of sharks while balancing plates on both hands.

CNN too did a glowing puff piece this morning on this conservative who won't use her given South Asian name. Tone and narrative was the same as well -- she's tough, she's independent. Two soft profiles in one day. She's got a good communications staff -- their story pitches to CNN and NY Times were successful it appears. Let it be the last puff piece on Trump's team please, NY Times. We're on the brink of war.

@Charisse, some South Asians don't like to use their given names because most Americans eyes glaze over if its anything more than two syllables and does not sound "Christian." Having your name butchered daily with even your co-workers wanting to make an effort to learn your name some of us decide to "Americanize" the first name, and some go all the way by changing it completely. This is usually done only for business purposes so if you want to see the real name look at they driver's license or passport. When some of these immigrants have children they give them names that could fit the West and S. Asia. I don't blame Nikki for her change. It only becomes a problem if she disavows her heritage completely.
8
Why do you get an opinion on the name she choices to use? Immigrants from all parts of the globe have chosen to western their names on coming to America for generations. It seems a purely personal choice and no one else's business.
Her given name is Nimrata. You would change it too.
Any problem with first generation Italians changing their name from Guido to Guy or Gary. I'm sure there are hundreds of examples.
You don't like her because she is a Republican. If she were a Democrat, the name Nikki would be fine.
