These tweets are usually more embarrassing than provocative. Just saying it would be great if Trump had some awareness and self control. Oh, to be old, rich, and narcissistic.

I wonder if Trump can tweet in Russian?
Twit, tweet, twitter ...........
Do you think, at age 70, (Yes, I'm being "age-ist"), he's the author of all his "tweets" or is there a "third party" involved ?

I picture him setting there in his bathrobe, with a chicken leg and a soda telling some aide what he thinks and what to tweet. Perfect job for a White House Intern.
1
I'm with you; I think he just "barks out" and someone types the Tweets.

The problem here is that our President is Tweety Bird who thinks thAt the Oval Office is The "Twlight Zone."

TrumpTweets inflame emotions, as he always has -- to create an angry alternate "reality" to help him. He's masterfully skilled at it.
Since Trump's new friends (40% of US voters) can see MSM "fake news", he worries they'll see he really IS a failure, that he's mired in controversy, he hired fraudsters in his administration, he openly lies, his kids aren't cool, maybe even Melania doesn't love him!!
Trump worries.
So Trump feeds them his "reality" in tiny bites, using intentionally provocative tweets. It works!! Just as plants use "thorny" fruits and leaves to get their seeds/DNA carried far away by animals, Trump writes thorny tweets/ideas to get them re-published and discussed by all.
But that's the problem. Every time the NYT or any media write about his tweets, they Spread Trump's thorns far. They give credence to his ideas. Most reasonable people figure out -- and ignore -- his nonsense.
But Trump targets gullible reactionary NON-THINKERS (80% of his voters). He spreads his thorns specifically to "incite" them. He (and the media) re-expose them to his EMOTIONS -- Fear, Hatred, Guile, Insults, Anger, Disinformation -- that EVERY TrumpTweet contains.
So repeating his thorny tweets IS THE problem. It serves only to keep his followers in an angry hateful frenzy -- amplifying his & his message's power.
Please NYT:
- If you must debunk a TrumpTweet, write at most a brief paragraph!
- NEVER write articles about them.
- NEVER analyze them.
- NEVER print any!!
- Ignore.

I cannot help but wonder if anyone close to this man isn't concerned about his mental health. If I had an aging parent who behaved like Trump I would have a long discussion with his primary physician about his mental state.
6
........ a discussion with his PCP about his mental state ?
I've already diagnosed him based on observation from afar.
I realize he's over the chronological age of 18, but this behavior is long-standing.
Conduct disorder of unspecified onset:
DSM-V: 312.89 and/or ICD-10-CM: F91.9

The words and deeds of President of the United States for better or worse have enormous impact on the entire world. They often have the impact of life or death.
With few exceptions we have been fortunate that historically our Presidents recognized that they were the elected leader of all of the nation and their words and deeds reflected that awareness. Communications to the nation were for the most part measured and articulate and all assumed that even if such communications were disagreeable to many, they were nevertheless the product of careful deliberative thought with input by the best and brightest an administration could muster.
You, other journalists, many of us, who wait on their Twitter feeds for the next tweet from the President exhibit Pavlovian behavior. We wait for the next ill-considered act, impulsive rant, lie, vicious attack--all made darkly relevant by the overwhelming power of the office. We are all, as Joseph Conrad described it "fascinated by the abomination".
Where these almost daily abominations will take us as a nation no one can predict. And it is this lack of predictability, government by impulse, often hateful impulse, that poses an enormous risk to America and the World.

I'm with Anderson Cooper!
If only Trump could be muted for a few days; not only from Twitter, but on the whole of the NYTimes.
Not only, but on the front page of any news media, there is Trump with his puckered up disdainful mouth and bloated face. And worse, his ugly words!

I agree. Here's an easy way to remember.
Main stream media is allowed to publish stories about "Trump Tweets" in months that contain the letter "T".
If a tweet never lands on the front page, did it really happen?
Perhaps the short fingered vulgarian will get the message that we don't care.
If you really want to watch that stuff, just hack is insecure android.

Just when we think he has gone too far, Trump comes up with something more outrageous than before, it gets treated like news, gets a lot of mileage, until the next tweet. These tweets are his lifelines, he tweets his followers, they tweet back telling him how wonderful he is, and he's charged until 5 o'clock, the following day. He can't help it.
2
Trump's insanity and his sociopathy is becoming increasingly clear. His tweets underscore this. And if We The Majority---who gave his opponent 3 million more votes than he received---simply shake our heads and roll our eyes every time he says or tweets another completely mendacious and unhinged thing and do nothing more, then we can expect Trump's deranged behavior to only get more extreme as time goes on.
It's been less than 2 months since this person took the oath of office and he's only gotten worse with every passing day. This CANNOT go on any longer!
It's time to get this duplicitous and disturbed man out of the White House. By any lawful and peaceful means possible. The fate of our nation and our world depend on it.

That form of laconic expression and communication has to be analyzed.
If Steve Bannon claims inspiration for the european fascists intellectuals of the 1930 Julius Evola and Charles Maurras ,I found out a very striking resemblance with an American eugenist ,historian ,fascist, collaborator of the nazis graduate magna cum laude form Harvard Lothrop Stoddard.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lothrop_Stoddard
But also for those who can read French a very important article about race and ADN and the way science is behaving mostly in anglo saxon ideologies.

Trump has gone off the deep end. He needs to go. Bannon needs to go, Kushner and Sessions as well. The whole lot need to go.
They are trying to blind us to their lies about Russian contacts. What about Giuliani? On TV interviews he seemed to know about the coming announcement of the FBI's additional investigating into Hillary's emails a few weeks before the elections. Remember that?
What is Trump so afraid that everyone is going to find out. Ross was involved with the heavily Russian-populated Bank of Cyprus through which a Russian transacted a $95 mil real estate deal with Trump in Florida. All very innocent and just business apparently, but why is Trump so afraid of people hearing about the details.
Trump managed to find the one black guy who would try to downplay slavery... Ben Carson saying that slaves were immigrants and that they came to work hard for less, with dreams for their kids. Are you kidding?
By the way, didn't you find it awfully convenient for those right-wing racist websites and radio talk shows to suddenly be talking about Obama ordering wire tapping of Trump Tower right when Trump got in a jam over his connections to Russia? Did Bannon have anything to do with getting those stories ramped up over night?
We need right now:
1) Trumps Tax returns - going all the way back. Every year.
2) A public independent investigation into Trump and his team's contacts with Russians - all the way back through the election.

President Obama should sue. Trump deserves to be buried in lawsuits, investigations and mockery.

Tweetie bird Trump will fall from his treetop palace into the abyss of time, and his tendentious tweets will torture us no more.

I wonder if Trump studied tweeting at The Wharton School; you know, the economics of
Effective CEO communications?
Effective CEO communications?
His tweets are like an insidious cancer. It won't go away without daily doses of chemotherapy.
1
Tweets from a birdbrain. Delicious.
3
Trump's tweeting, a melding of fanaticism with addiction, of paranoia and narcissism, define him as a needy, insecure, and immature man. His lying flows freely, his insults uncalled for, his impertinence a byproduct of deep ignorance, and his conspiratorial theories unequaled by any previous president. This is a psychiatric case worth studying, and treating, although an effective pill may require a lethal dose by now. The constant "chirps" may be a smoke screen to divert our attention, so he can go on cheating on us, as usual. Buyer's remorse, anybody?

A few observations on his tweets: 1) why aren't the tweets coming out under the @Potus name? Most seem to be under the Donald Trump twitter account. You're not Donald Trump, game show host - you're the President of the United States. This is what 13 year old girls do - not the US president. 2) the craziest tweets always seem to come out while his daughter & son-in-law are observing Sabbath. Does Bannon wait for Friday sunset to egg him on?
15
"why aren't the tweets coming out under the @Potus name?"
Because @realDonaldTrump has 26.1M followers, while @POTUS has 15.9M followers. Anyway, you can follow BOTH.
"This is what 13 year old girls do - not the US president."
"13 year old girls" can't be President, so that is nonsense.

Trumps "adaptation" to media coverage of the Presidency has been to label the media "fake news" and go straight to his followers via Twitter. That appears to be his escape valve. Take it away and he will become more unstable.
The NYT and others, I think, have chosen the best strategy. Publish his tweets verbatim, put them in context (whenever possible) and ask the White house staff for comment, or explanations. The fallout seems to be Mr Trump getting more reckless with his tweets.
That tendency will ultimately get him into trouble. The GOP will find it impossible to unanimously support him and once cracks emerge, or the Congressional majority changes in 2018, there will be legal recourse to removing Mr. trump.

Those who are truly unhinged, nuts, insane, etc will always be identified by their #1 characteristic: Accuse others of what they themselves are blatantly guilty of. That's Trump in a nutshell.
33
Your quote; "That's Trump in a nutshell."
An appropriate receptacle, I might add.

In 2 words, "mental illness."
Paranoia, persecution complex, irrationality, artificially-sustained sense of dignity, and first & foremost as far as Trump himself is concerned, hyper-defensiveness of his own ego to the detriment of the Office of the Presidency. The neo-Pubs sure know how to pick 'em.
errrr.....
wait......
......Trump rolled over the entire GOP, took no prisoners, & took it hostage for his own use.... that's HOW WEAK America's Republican Party had become after its 8 looong years of Obama bashing & uncooperation at all costs.
Then after they all felt defeated they all gathered 'round their new hero with trepidation and fearful, wimpy admiration & wonder, which eventually transmogrified in most of them into a strange ignominious brainless *rage* against **anyone** opposing him or his words or actions or anything he did... quite Hitler-esqe, it seems to me.
Fortunately, less than half of America has drunk the Trump Kool-Aid that brings about such insanity, irrationality, "alternative facts" in place of truths or incredibly, even that "facts just don't exist anymore," and blatant hypocrisy the likes of which America has never before seen.

I also thought why mention them. But they scream volumes about how he governs. If the medium is the message it matters less what he says, although sometimes it matter a lot, then how he chooses to go about it.
He has access to every resource one can dream of & could go directly to those for example the FBI. But he is accustomed to blaming others. It's a coping mechanism that can work but in the case of the Presidency the job will not tolerate this forever. At some point another person in the triangle will cave under the pressure, not if but when.
He triangles (brings in a third party) rather than going directly to the source because he can deflect the anxiety away from himself. But the triangle cannot hold that much anxiety so he triangles more and More people, agencies, and even governments. Meanwhile he cannot see how much he participates in the very thing he cannot tolerate.
He not only creates more anxiety in the process but shines the brightest light on himself. That's why taking away his phone will not solve it; he will find other methods...but that Twitter thing isn't going away.
It's no longer humorous, or innocuous. This is serious. So they have to report it, but it needs to be his exact words, word for word with no conjecture about the fallout because the fallout will naturally follow.

Trump’s twits are not the news. What quietly happens -hidden behind the chaos caused by Trump’s twitter storm –is the news.
While Trump displays his “50 Shades of Lunacy”, his dangerous group of advisors and cabinet appointees are quietly undoing what previous presidencies have done to protect average American citizen.
Yesterday's NYT article "Leashes Come Off Wall Street, Gun Sellers, Polluters and More" is a prime example of what this group is up to. These reversals will make super riches even wealthier while most people will face the consequences of relaxed laws for long time to come. Such actions need to have the same lime light, if not more, as Trump's nonsensical twits.
It is about time media and democrats adjust their plays and keep their attention trained on stealthy decisions/actions that may be lurking behind the chaos of Trump's twitter storm.

Why not establish a daily column: DJT Tweets of the Day: Unsubstantiated and Alternate Facts? That way he gets his ink separate from the news about reality.

"DJT Tweets of the Day: ..."
There already is such a thing. Here is the link:

Alternatively - "DJT Brain Farts of the Day"
Just a suggestion -- the NYT occasionally publishes translations of relevant articles for readers in other countries and immigrant communities. Perhaps it's time to start publishing anything about Trump in Russian also to keep his associates in Moscow in the loop?
17
As a concerned citizen of the United States, I would like propose that Donald J. Trump be required to wear a lie-detector mechanism at all times. It should be configured with some type of sound alert whenever a lie is detected. I realize that such a solution may, in fact, contribute materially to the level of sound pollution within the immediate area, but such is the nature of our current state of affairs.
All in favor, say "Aye"!
All in favor, say "Aye"!
19
The problem with a lie detector is that, if you truly believe the lie you're telling, it does not indicate deception. So it's not going to work on Trump.
3
He knows he's a liar...He's a professional liar. He's just upset because everyone knows it by now...We'll just need to devise an exceptional, super sensitive, fine-tuned lie detector test that works 100% of the time -- American ingenuity to the rescue!
4
I agree DJT needs a lie detector device, but rather than sounding an alarm, how about it simply shocks him? My dogs stay in the yard that's surrounded by an invisible fence that shocks them were they to venture beyond the limits -- and they learned to avoid the shock by avoiding the limits. Maybe Trump would learn also?
6
'Change the alert to something more invasive' LOL!
3
Bird tweets are natural, intelligent, meaningful and beautiful. Trump tweets are not.
12
One writer above referred to Trump Tweets as Brain Farts. That's not for the birds.
I'm an 18-year-old and I follow Trump on twitter. I enjoy seeing his tweets. This is one way he keeps many people updated. I think he can be very ignorant sometimes but he is unlike any other president we have had. Trump is the change America has been waiting for, forever now. He keeps his followers up to date on his decisions and what is changing. Others, who don't follow him, will still see the tweets and will make negative comments. I feel that if they don't agree or don't like Trump, they should just ignore it or mute Trump so they wont see the tweets.
2
I hope that as you get older, you get a little wiser and find something better to look forward to than a selfish bigot spouting deranged lies.
10
Perfect example of the ignorance that let this criminal be elected.

DR & magicisnotreal,

Trump uses his preferred communication tool in a particularly tasteless and infantile way. His typical barrage barely disguises his disdain for... well, for practically everyone and everything.
While I have previously urged the NYTimes to somehow set the tweets apart, to diminish their importance in some way, I now feel that the paper's journalists are correct to draw attention to those tweets that can have serious repercussions. They also help the entire nation see how unhinged this president is. Now, if only the Republicans in Congress would open their eyes...

Obviously you didn't read the article: "Mr. Trump has used Twitter to celebrate American heroes, to praise friends and allies, and to promulgate policy agendas."
Some people seem to hate Trump so much that they won't even look at his Twitter page to find out what he really tweets:

The Trump tweets are a ruse, a smokescreen to deflect attention to his slimy policy agenda; and all the slim balls in his cabinet willing to sell our country out for personal or corporate gain. Tillerson as Sec of State?, there's a reason the State dept hasn't provided a daily briefing since Jan 20. He has no experience or interest in foreign policy, its all to do with clearing the way for Russian drilling for Exxon Mobil than protecting America's national security; pretty much every cabinet person has an agenda, and non of them will make our country great, rather it will make the extemely rich even richer, and the rest of us weaker economically and wipe out any moral high ground that we may have re-gained over the past eight years.
The best we can do with his unfounded tweets is ignore them, and press the real / verifiable news they are attempting to cover up. Trump is a master at generating fake news (that's how he got on the political stage, by making false accusations, and playing on peoples ugliest fears). We've been conned as a country to allow this unqualified, unethical trader to become the most powerful man on the planet; we can allow his to destroy it! Enough is enough!

You've only "been conned" if you voted for him. The rest of us knew better.
4
Ignoring Presidential tweets is not an option for a major news organization like the Times. They have found a balance and I agree that "The same journalistic standards — judgments on newsworthiness, veracity and potential repercussions — apply to coverage of Mr. Trump’s tweets as they do to his messages conveyed via other mediums."
9
don jon has presented more evidence than required to "recuse" him. When he libels and defames the past President and claims the FBI engaged in illegal wiretaps- or that they followed Russian intrusions to his door - time to move on.
Pence MUST use Section 45 powers to remove him- Or Congress MUST impeach. Those GOPers with the guts to do so will, eventually be heroes.

What's his sleep cycle like?
Gets up bright and early and tweets or crashes after a satisfying tweet? Just curious.

why this endless repetition of trump's latest finger picking un-truths? those endless free news presentations is what got him elected. his outrageous statements, often pick-ups from local and/or international fibs to this day make frontpage news, simply to keep his big mouth front and center. is this really front page news? couldn't the times simply refrain from covering what is ultimately only tabloid fodder?
3
Carmelina,
"is this really front page news? couldn't the times simply refrain from covering what is ultimately only tabloid fodder?"
I Would agree with you if this was anyone else other than the President of the United States. The most powerful man in the world. Certainly the world takes notice every time he speaks, whether it is on twitter or by other means. I am not sure if he realizes the damage that he is doing to himself, and to the country when he goes on these ranting tantrums, that are false, to his twitter account. Yet, no one is able to stop him as we go further down this rabbit hole.

I have never understood the need for anyone to tweet; I understand even less that reputable and trusted news organisations (BBC, NYT, Guardian) have taken to including tweets in their articles. I don't read tweets, I don't tweet, and don't care for the mostly inane, insipid, and downright pointless mutterings that rule the air or tweeter-wave. I have no time for those who tweet anymore than I do for the ravings of those on whatever soapbox happens to be handy, including President Trump, most especially Trump. Can we just say enough - NYT please take note and stick to serious journalism . . .

But not repeating the tweets as important news, rather than diversions from real issues, might be an option, and one the media should exercise. So far, Trump tweets and the media dances to his tune, as if these were serious expressions of fact or policy, amplifying the effect of his sudden, off-hand bile. New presidential tactics require new kinds of response.

Good thing he has small fingers and doesn't have to use a stylus...

Do you feel just a little bit superior now that you took a swipe at the President safely behind your keyboard?
Except that unlike you, the commenter put his name out there.

I'd love to see Obama sue,
The fool with the orange hue,
Whose libelous lies,
Could herald the demise,
Of the president with no clue.

Trump's Revenge...why
“Narcissistic Rage” (NR), is a term coined in 1972 by Heinz Kohut…one of the classic behaviors of the narcissist. Most narcissistic victims have experienced serious outbursts of NR which can include violent physical attacks, hysteria, screaming and verbal or emotional abuse.
NR covers a wide range of behaviors from aloofness or mild irritability to serious, physically violent attacks. A narcissist often makes unrealistic demands on those closest to them. The narcissist has a fragile ego that cannot stand to ever be wrong or viewed as imperfect, therefore the narcissist responds with feelings of rage and contempt toward the challenger. When challenged or slighted in the least, the narcissist perceives these as outright attacks on him and reacts with rage toward that person in order to regain feelings of superiority and assuage his self-esteem…They are explosive, volatile outbursts which may be verbal, physical, or both. NR can also be related to narcissists’ need for total control of their environment, including “the need for revenge, for righting a wrong, for undoing a hurt by whatever means”. The fuming rage impairs their cognition, therefore impairing their judgment. During the rage they are prone to shouting, fact distortion and making groundless accusations.

Maybe we should just ignore the tweets ...? Just a thought.

Lovely idea but it's very doubtful it will happen. The media use the tweets to gain more viewers and the President knows that will bring him more of the attention he desperately craves. Also important, tweets are how the President communicates with his supporters and others on everything from government policy to the talent level of Saturday Night Live performers. We're living in alt-reality.
