On December 6, 1960, a deadly United Airlines plane crashed on the corner of Sterling Place and Seventh Avenue.
From this picture, it seems that a United Airlines flight crashed in some city. This crash was probably pretty bad, because of the wreckage seen in the photo. The whole back end of the plane was separated from the rest of the plane. Because the fire hose is strewn on the ground, I would guess that whatever fire there was has already been put out. This also makes sense because of the large crowd gathering around the wreckage.

Update from Period 1 - Thursday am. We think this is in America - New York. We know it is from the past because of the way the people are dressed, the car in the bottom right of the picture, the older street lamps, and the wide streets. Also, we were able to figure out it was New York because of the signage on the truck and the architecture of the city. We think something happened mid-air to cause the plane to fall to the ground - it could not have flown into the building - the damage would have been greater (the building would not still be standingl)...some think it may be a film set also.
I'm wondering where the women are. I can't seem to find any. That makes me wonder about it being United Airlines debris in mid-century New York--my original guess.

I think it's the United plane crash in Brooklyn. I don't know the year, but would guess from the clothing that it might be the '60s. I remember hearing about a plane crash there when I lived in Brooklyn, and the silhouette of the buildings down the street is familiar to me - 7th Avenue? One of the avenues in Park Slope, anyway. The No Parking sign is definitely a New York sign, as it has those alternate side of the street parking hours that drive you crazy and eventually bring you to giving up your car.

I think a plane crashed not long ago and now they put out the fire. I see smoke rising up behind the airplane and a fire hose which makes me say this. I can find this happened a while back because the picture is in black and white. I can see it took a lot of water to put the fire out from the plane because the street is wet. I can see it is winter because people have coats on and there is snow on the side of the road.
I think that what happened in the picture was that a plane crashed and then the firefighters are trying to save them by putting out the fire and then the people are terrified of what has happened. It also looks like this is perhaps hours, or the next day after the incident since there are a lot of people gawking, and the fire hoses are no longer in use. The time period looks like the late 1950's or 1960's based on the look of the car off on the right and the cab of the truck on the left. Also the dress of several of the people. Also, the piece of the aircraft is a tail, not a wing, and it could be from a jet, prop, or prop-jet style aircraft. Also, judging by what you can see of the condition of the buildings, it's possible that the tail fell here, and the rest of the aircraft ended up somewhere else, which suggests a mid-air incident. The "smoke" may also just be steam since it looks like the kind of weather where you'd see that as a result of building heating systems. The plane came crashing down a few blocks away from me and it hit me my life flashing in front of me. So many innocent people lost. As i walk towards it many people start surrounding it as if hell had come onto earth. There were many doctors nurses and firefighters along trying to see help the people if they survived but it doesn't seem likely. There were cops trying to keep the spectators from getting to close. Many people have theories of what happened but i think that they got lost in the fog and they didn't see the road so close.
I remember seeing this on TV (probably air disasters on NGC). There was a collision between a United Plane and a TWA plane. The planes crashed in park slope, Brooklyn and Staten Island. There was one 11 year old survivor who unfortunately died soon after.

In New York, a plane crashed. It looks like it is an old photo. There was a fire, but it got put out and many people are surprised by the plane and are going towards it.
After noting that this appeared to be a United Airlines Plane that crashed sometime in 1950's or early 60's and reading that one person was quite sure it happened in New York City I did some research and determined that he was correct .. Searching internet made identification quite easy. I remember reading about the sole surviver when the crash occurred. He was a child and commented on how beautiful the city looked from his plane window just before the crash.

Let me tell you about a story that i was in in the 19 maybe 18 hundreds a army plane crashed in the city of New York, it was snowing in December the 27 i was in the war at that time.Their was about 10 deaths,no survives.The plane was carrying a 2000 pound of bombs and weapons on board. I was surprised that the whole city didn't blow up. The people of New York came out to see the plane and found body's laying on the ground and the smoke that almost cover the city,the firefighters had to put out the fire and the smoke that drew everyone in.

I'm a reporter from Texas. We are at the scene of New York City where a United airplane has crashed into a building. There was about 20 to 30 people on the plane and a few people were injured. About 19 people were killed on the plane. People surrounded around the plane and the firefighters were putting water on the plane so it wouldn't blow up.

He writes that perhaps,"they were transporting a plane from one place to another (possibly from one hangar to another) and on the way, something went wrong while being moved and it caught on fire. The reason that I think it didn't crash is because there is no damage to the surrounding buildings. It is impossible to crash a plane in a thirty-foot wide street without hitting any buildings..."

i think this is a plane crash that happened during the 40s in London cause of the way the buildings look and the way the people are dressed.It looks like the plane crashed into that near by building and there might have been a few casualties.

Well I know it is winter because there is snow on the ground, and the people are dressed in winter clothing. It doesn't make since why people are gathered around the plane. I know that in modern times if there is some type of event/accident that people have to stay away from the event/accident. Like a car crash you need to stay away from, even if it is modern. So this tells us that the image is from an older time when security was not so strict, because if this was modern you would not see people gathered that close to the object.

I feel like because there is snow and it is very foggy it could likely be in a northern part of the US or possibly Europe. Surprisingly, I do not see too much destruction for a full plane crash. It seems that the crash did not just occur, as many people are walking toward the crash site slowly and seemingly in a calm way rather than panicking or acting surprised. I see a sign for no parking and one for a building, and both are in English so I believe this is probably either in the United States or maybe England. This crash brings a lot of interest to the people in the picture and they seem to be trying to gain knowledge of what happened to this plane. The crash occurred likely earlier that day or possibly the day before because it seems that they are still trying to help people and revive the buildings and maybe put out fires because I see a hose. I also appreciate how you cite the specific gestures of the people, as if they are "trying to gain knowledge of what happened to this plane." Your comment makes me think about how photography can make experience strange: similar to the viewers in the photograph who approach the plane, WE try to gain knowledge of what happened to this plane by approaching the photo of the viewers approaching the plane, sort of like an infinity mirror.
I'm going to tell the audience what I think is going on in this picture. I think a plane crashed in a big city. I think this is in the 1940s-50s. The reason I think this is because there is a large tail of United plane sitting in the middle of a road. I see smoke coming off a part of the plane in the distance. As displayed in the foreground, many hoses are carefully placed on the white snow. There are many citizens of this city observing the plane, and the outstanding work the firemen have done to put out this monster of a fire. So, I think this crash was a big deal back then, and the news spread fast across the country.

There must have been a fire because there is smoke, hoses and in the crowd there is a man with a fire fighter hat on. There is no police holding people back from getting too close to the destroyed plane or directing traffic. The wing must have fallen off into the city and the rest of the plane landed somewhere else.

This picture first of all looks like it's as old as Albert Einstein. I think that this was maybe the first plane that was created, this plane was the test run of the experiment. Based on what i see in this picture, plan looks like it was original and still had some things missing. So this caused the plane to sadly crash. You're noticing different types of people in the crowd...police, firefighters, men, perhaps residents from the buildings. What more? Who is there and who is NOT there? Can you read more into their different reactions to tell us more about what's happening?
It was a plane that was flying and the person who was driving it lost control of the plane or maybe the plane had a problem. And the plane fell to a city. After the plane fell into the city the people who were there tried to run and some people died and others were kept safe. After that happened the police and firefighters arrived and tried to see If the people who were on the plane were alive. There was a lot of smoke everywhere.
One day a United States airplane was going to another place with lots of people aboard. As they were high in the sky the airplane was making funny noises. It suddenly stopped flying and fell down really fast to the ground. It landed in a small town where there was snow and it split in half. There was a lot of fire and the firefighters came really fast. They got out their long hose to put out the fire. Once the fire was out they started looking for people. Lots of other people started to gather around the airplane. While the firefighters were looking for people,they found none.

We think it's a plane crash and maybe it hit a building. It could also be that a plane hit a truck. People are standing very close to the scene. We believe it happened in New York.
It looks like a plane crash in the early 1900's, I know this because of the outfits the bystanders and wearing and what looks to be a firemen's hose. I also in it is in the time period because the picture is in black and white and that in the late 1800's the camera were very big and bulking and the wouldn't be very clear as the picture is. It looks to be in either United Kingdom or in Manhatten New York because of the building shape and the writing on the side of the truck that is on the left side of the picture.
Wow it looks as if this plane had engine failures.That's the only thing that would make it come down.There was not much to go on but we can get somebody to check this out.They find something it was engine failures and it ended the worst way.Two people died, Paul Sampan and Phil Revare, they were two good people. They have been working at the airline 20 years.
A day later they got all the remains cleaned up. We repaired the plane and we use it now for every thing. That day we started checking the engines it saved a lot of lives.

It looks like the picture was taken is Brooklyn, NY because of the renting company that shows something like Gentk-B-NY. Also, I think that the time period is winter there. Also, there is a plane that looks like the company United Eco-Skies. One day in fall in New York, the day was going normal until a big BOOM! came across the city silence and it was everywhere. In the corner of the Time Square a huge airplane was just setting there while smoke filled the air. Firefighters was spraying the plane down and people/ reporters were filling the streets; while on one side on the plane there was a little ridge of snow with a hose on it .

In this picture, I can tell the corner wing of an airplane has crashed in the middle of the street. This image is black and white, so it is most likely old, however if you look carefully you can see what looks to be some sort of wooden structures holding up what is left of the inside of the plane. I think that because it looks wooden, this plane is fake, making this have to be part of a movie or something. The realism of the shot seems to make sense with the theory, because people surrounding the plane might make sense in real life. However, the person taking this picture would have needed to put in alot of work to take it at a time of black and white, especially because of the crowds blocking the image.

It looks like something after 9/11, after all the building that were on fire were put out, they find this piece somewhere on a different street in New York. Since there is snow on the ground, I think it's an event similar to 9/11 because New York did not have snow in September, the tail of the airplane is on the ground, and there are hoses everywhere. It must be in the U.S because of the street signs, the parking sign, and the truck in the back does have English on it. This could also possibly be something totally unrelated to 9/11 and it could just be the first time they were testing out airplanes and one crashed. It does look to be in the U.S, but probably roughly around the late 1800's to the early 1900's.

Upon further inspection I noticed the "Belfort" sign and when i looked it up it was a rental company in New York. Then, I looked up United Plane crashes in New York and found out that this is a picture of the wreckage from the 1960 mid air crash.

This picture immediately gives off tones that are bleak, dismal, and dark. The first noticeable attention-grabbing detail is the sole plane wing resting in the street where it seems it has crashed. Evidence of crash is seen through the large crowd aburptly gathered, as if everyone were enjoying their typical day before it crashed. The photo is in black and white, so some age is inferred about the time it occurred, some time in the past where color was not popular/used/available. There are large piles of snow on the side of the street, plowed, so it seems it has been accumulated, also with the attire of the crowd in long jackets,it's assumed it is mid-winter. This appears to take place perhaps during the WWII era. More specifically, the Battle of Britain. There is a fatal plane crash in the middle of the street, supposedly in London. It could also be somewhere in the United States, but the gloominess and bleak weather conditions suggest otherwise. The plane is so demolished, that it's almost unrecognizable and is in two fragments. The crash may have been caused by an attempted or successful terrorist attack, or it possibly malfunctioned. A profusion of people are encompassing the plane, curious as to what happened or to help. The first thing I see when I look at this picture is the wing of a United Airplane. This must be the crash from Illinois in 1972. I believe it was this crash as the plane is in half and it looks like the clock tower in Illinois is in the background. It shows everyone coming together to save the ones who could be stuck in debris and trying to rescue them.

In this picture, there is a throng of people gathering around what seams to be a crash of some sorts. There is a shroud of smoke gathering around the Victorian style and (at the time) modern modern buildings. There are firemen and policemen at this scene and their equipment. The most noticeable thing about this picture is that it is in black and white, which means that it was taken a long time ago. What I think happened is that a plane crashed in the middle of a street in a busy city, and all the people came to help or see what was going on.

Looking at this photo, the first thing that caught my eye was the item that appears to look like a planes wing. The word that states, UNITED, on the front reminds of United Airlines. I assume that the country is in France because of the truck that is in the background that says, Bonjour on the front of it. Also, the difference in architecture makes me think that the location is in a foreign country.
In this picture there is obvious panic. I presume it is an airplane crash. I think this because from the United label on the plane and the size of the object. I also assume this is in a major city because of the large crowd it grew wouldn't be in a small town.

This crash had to take place around the 1950's or up. The peoples clothes look from 50-60 years ago. The signs are in English, the top of those far buildings look medieval a style used in western hemisphere, I don't see anything like those around here. The Airplane tail says United, I don't know anything about plane history but I'm guessing it was one of the first Airlines.

This was a plane crash that happened in somewhere in the United States. I know that because on the wings of the airplane, "United" is titled on there indicating it's an American airline. Judging the looks of the city, it looks different than modern cities today so the picture had to have been took in the late 50's. More I can find to this picture is the atmosphere looks cold, judging by people wearing coats, the fog in the sky, and the winter slush on the ground. There is also a giant fire hose on the ground indicating that help came right away so that no further disaster occurred. Noticing all the people, it definitely makes sense why they're all accumulated around the plane and questioning what was the cause of this horrific event. Further observing the looks of the plane, the wings are the only parts present in this picture. The body of the plane could've burned to ashes or flung elsewhere when the plane came down.

In this picture I see the ruined remains of a crashed United Airlines planes in the middle of a street. A crowd of a lot of people is gathered around the rare spectacle, watching smoke rise in mesmerizing patterns from the fallen vesicle. The back of the plane is clearly visible, as is the United logo. On the ground you can see hoses, presumably from fire trucks, that have littered the ground with water. I can see what appears to be ice collected on the side of the road, from this and the fact that the crowd is dressed in warm clothing, allows to conclude that it is winter, and quite a bitter one at that.

In this picture there is the tail of a plane that is on the street. All of the hoses are either for putting a fire out, or getting oil out of the crashed plane. There is a truck that says Brooklyn New York, so I am going to assume this picture is in Brooklyn. I believe that this is the tail of the plane because of the flap that is on the left side. And I have seen planes with the “United” on the tail of planes. A plane has gasoline and oil in it, so I think that they are trying to pump oil out of the plane incase there is a fire. There is snow on the ground, which makes me think that this crash was during the winter or spring. The clothing has a 60’s look to it, the police uniforms/hats are very vintage and not modern. When it hit the building, the plane broke into pieces, and then fell from the sky; hit the ground and cracked. This happened in 1982,and this took place in London. The piece in the middle on the right is small, and it is in the middle of the crowd of people,but looks like a lion. When the airplane fell it killed about 100 people that day.

This picture shows the plane of United Nations crashing down in somewhere in Britain or Europe because the street posts are unique and people are wearing fancy clothes and nice jackets. No one wears nice clothes to go out anymore, so this picture is really old because its black and white. There's snow on the ground so it must be really cold,
I think a plane crashed in the middle of the city and people are surrounding because they are nosiey and want to know what happen, the roads are wet because most likely the plane caught fire when it crashed and they had to stop the fire.
I think a plane had crash-landed in this city and people are observing, or trying to find out what happened. The plane could have came from the US because it says United on the wing, but that could just been the name, like "United Airlines" if that were to be the name of the plane it must have came from American Airlines. I just researched United Airlines plane crashes, and I have seen images that look exactly like this image from what I had searched, so I come to conclusion thinking that this could be United Airlines flight 533 plane crash that had crash landed while it was approaching Chicago in 1972.

What i believe is going on in this picture is that a plane hit a building or the tail detached from the plane in mid air and at the time it was snowing at the time and then people came around to see what happen but they really could not do anything about it so people cleaned up the mess and then went back to work, but the firefighters stayed behind to help the people that got injured during the crash.
In this picture its set back in the 30s or 40s. The quality of the photo taken and the clothes the people are wearing in the photo give away from period of time its from. All what looks like clouds is steam or exhaust from the fire of the crashed plane. There is a long rope covering the ground that is a hose to take out the fire. there is water covering the ground as well which shows the hose has already been used. The plane has a giant bold letters printed "UNITED" so this is an American planed possibly from the time frame of WW2. The plane looks blown up from the angle of the photo.
I think the plane got hit by a bomb or someone planned an attack. I wonder why this picture is in black and white? It looks like there is snow on the ground and a fire hose is laying on the cold hard snow. The people look really concerned and maybe it was because there were loved ones on the plane. People might have been killed and the people are wondering what happened to their loved ones. It looks like there is fog or a mist from the water that got sprayed on the plane because it was on fire. This may have happened a long time ago because of the black and white photo. It happened in the US because United is an American plane.
I think the people are in the 20th century and there was an army plane crash. People came to see what happened. There was a fire so the people had to put it out with a fire hydrant. They are in New York. I say this because there are the letters, NY on the side of the truck.

I think it is the first plane crash which ever happened and people are scared and amazed at the same time. They wonder what happened to the rest of the plane. Was it blown up or did it get destroyed and blown away? No matter how it happened they will always remember it in their minds. They were very scared to fly a plane so no-one ever asked, until they made new ones which are safer.

I might not say truth about this picture but in my site, this kind of looks like a piece of a plane and people are surrounding these objects. I can say that it can be a tail of US plane that have might of broken off and probably the rest of the plane could've crashed somewhere else. I'm pretty sure that the tail was on fire and fire fighters came. I predicted that because there is smoke and a hose on the ground to put the fire out.
I think the Plane in the picture crashed and the people are looking for survivors. I say this because of the broken tail wing in the center of the photo. The white trail might be fire retardant foam from a fire extinguisher. This is because of the huge trail of foam in the left side of the screen. This picture seems to be old. This picture taken by Allyn Baum is showing a crash site for a United Airlines plane that must have crashed possibly decades ago. It is clear that the plane is from United Airlines due to the large "United" logo on the chunk of the destroyed pane. This crash probably did not happen in the United States which can be proven by the style of the buildings in the city that would most likely be European. If this did happen in the United States, it probably happened in the Northeast somewhere. It is evident that this picture was taken at least couple of decades ago due to the moving truck which is a very old model that would not be used any time now. My final analysis is that this was a plane crash that happened in a country that is probably not the United States and this crash happened some time ago.

What's happening in this picture is showing us a peice of a plane that broke off and fell into the street in a town/city. The hose laying nearby tells us that the peice of the plane was on fire. The black and white coloring of the picture tells us that this was not something that happend recently. It looks to be cold out since everyone seems to be wearing heavy jackets and there looks to be snow on the ground.
there is a broken off piece of a tail of a plane in a middle of a city. there is also snow on the ground so it is winter time. there is people crowded around the broken plane piece most likely in shock that this happened. this picture is in black and white so i can infer that this was taken in the 1900's. there is a huge hose on the ground so there was a fire that the fireman had to put out. there is also a lot of debris on the ground. there is also a lot of smoke in the air so there had to have something burning.
This is an image of a plane which crashed into a city somewhere in the U.S. This is an older crash, with one obvious showing of that being the color and quality of the image, so this was probably between the 40s and the 60s, and another reason is the height of the buildings. Buildings were much smaller back then due to the in-building transportation, such as elevators, which probably were much more unsafe back then. The cause of the crash could have been anything, but it probably was some issue in the manufacturing of the plane, as planes were obviously less advanced back then.
It looks like in the picture there has been some sort of terrible plane crash. The shape on the misplaced object has the shape of a teared apart plane tail. The people seem very serious but not worried (unless its not shown). I know that in the world if something is out of place humans are always curious about whats happening so these people were confused of possibly a giant noise from a crash in the street so natually came to check it out. The mound of snow and the side leads me to think that it is winter time. The hoses on the ground are most likely there because you can see fire fighters and they thought there was a fire. But because its winter and the plane may have had an overheating engine the warm air mixed with the cold would make it steam making it seem like a fire.

First, the black and white color of the photograph, the vintage automobiles, and the citizens' attire photo leads one to believe that this takes place in the 20th century. Moreover, the key subject in this photo is of course, the airplane that has been demolished. The back wing is visible in the perspective of Mr. Baum, and one can see that it reads "United." United is a major American airline company. There is smoke coming from the area of the crash and firelighters on the far right of the photo trying to fight the fire originating from the plane.
This picture depicts a crashed United plane in Brooklyn during the early 1960s. This is obviously a United plane because of the logo written on the tail that had fallen over the street intersection. Its is possible that it is in Brooklyn based on the look of the city and the old truck in the back says, "B-N.Y." which most likely means Brooklyn. This happened during the early 1960s because there is an old truck in the back left of the picture with old writing on the side, the street lights are from a different generation, the fire hose looks very dated, and the picture quality is that of the 1960s (similar to that of many pictures taken during the civil rights movement). I think that this is a picture of the United plane that crashed in New York City in 1960. The wing clearly says "United" on it and the way the wing has been separated from the rest of the plane looks like it isn't an exhibit where the wing was separated from the plane on purpose, but a crash. The snow indicates that it is winter, supporting that this would be a picture from the 1960 crash in New York, as it happened in December. In addition, the people's clothing shows that this isn't a recent picture and that this was taken decades ago.
In the picture there seems to have been a plane crash in a small city/town in France. I know it is in France because the sign for one of the stores says "Belfort Truck Renting Co." Then I looked up Belfort and it said that is was a town in France. There is also a fire hose in the picture. This shows that the plane could have caught on fire/blown up because of the crash. This would result in the passengers being killed. Which could be why so many people are crowded around the plane.

USA military planes, which was my first guess, do not say "United" only without at least "States" written after. So, it has to be a passenger plane. The snow on the ground, the english writing on all of the street signs, the American firefighter uniforms on all of the firemen, and the Belfort Truck Renting Company truck all suggest that this crash happened in New York, or at least in the Northeast. The Belfort truck says N.Y. on it, so the company is stationed in New York, but someone could have driven it a long way while they moved. All this leads to conclude that this passenger plane has crashed into the Northeastern region of the US, so hopefully nobody was on the plane at the time.
In Allyn Baum's picture you can see that a plane has crashed in a cold snowy city street. This plane tail once belonged to a United Airways flight and it has somehow gone down and crashed in a city street. I am guessing this is in New York because on the truck rental car it says N.Y. on it. Also this seems like it is in the `960's due to the cars and the overall quality and color of the picture. This picture shows a horrible event that has occurred in New York in the 1960's and has impacted many people in the past and soon the future.

That word "somehow" captures the enigma in the picture; so many questions arise in the viewer's mind. Not just, "what happened," but also "who?" "where?" "when?" "why?" and "how?" I'm happy to see you use specific details to hypothesize about the "when" and "where" —New York, 1960s, the cars, the B&W. Without a doubt, this appears to be a "horrible event" that occurred; doubtless, too, it impacted many people, as you say. I wonder what you mean by that last phrase, "in the past and soon in the future." Which future are your referring to: the one we are living toward or the one in the photograph?

This is an old picture of a the aftermath of a united airlines plane crash in the US or England in the winter time. In the photo, everything is in english, but the buildings make me think this is in England because of the architecture. The plane crashed a while ago because no one is putting out the previous fire suggested by the smoke and ambulances are all gone. No one is holding the fire hose, instead the firefighters seem very calm. The people look curious instead of concerned and no one is rushing anywhere. You can't see the rest of the plane, so I don't think anyone was hurt here considering we only see the tail and not the section where passengers were actually sitting. The shot of only the tail adds a bit of mystery that makes the audience wonder where the rest of the plane is.

Perhaps you used the internet and searched terms like "plane crash" and "Belfort," a strategy that our technology makes easy to do, so easy that we may even overlook some of the details that we see when we look further into the text. Look closer, linger a little longer. Use your own powers of critical thinking more before turning to the "authority" of the internet to tell you what's going on! :)

Allyn Baum, the photographer of the picture, was employed at the New York Times as a photographer from 1957 to 1967, and since most images selected for the "What's Going On in This Picture" are previously used images from the NYT, it is clear that this photograph was published when Baum was employed. It is clear that this is a stressful time given the crowd and plane wreck.
