Metered parking is underpriced. The price should be raised until the point that there are always one or two free spots on each block.

We need ACT IV - Was the spot legal and was the car still there when she came back.

Car registrations by NYC residents increased by 40,000 from 2014 to 2015. And you wonder why it is so hard to find a free parking spot?
Perhaps New York State could do what is done in Japan: if you want to register a car in your city, you have to prove that you have somewhere to park it.

As a frequent visitor to NYC, visiting relatives on the (far) Upper West Side, I fully understand the agonies of finding a parking spot. As Mid-westerners, we do like and use our car extensively. As such, we often drive to NYC and stay in Jersey. One day last fall, it took about 15 minutes to arrive at our destination, only to spend the next 45 minutes looking for a parking space. And, on another day, a school zone No Parking sign was hidden by trucks and construction dumpsters. I did find a place next to the next No Parking sign, only to receive a ticket for parking in a restricted zone. Quickly learning the process to appeal, a photo of my car next to (and in front of) the sign got the ticket dismissed. But I'm sure others may not have been so persistent or lucky. If I lived in NYC, I don't think I have enough money to consider owning a car.

This is Manhattan; get rid of your car.

Pretty typical for New Yorkers in my experience. Growing up in the deep deep South, it was a positive pleasure to find that New Yorkers were not in fact the impolite ogres I had been raised to expect. Actually, they can be incredibly polite, helpful, and accommodating of strangers and newcomers. Thanks for all the love and fun New York!

Hmm. You were very lucky! I spent 40 minutes yesterday looking for a spot, and ended up at a one-hour meter 15 blocks away from my destination, with no offers of help along the way beyond my own adrenaline ticking before my job interview. The good news was that I can walk fast, the interview was relatively quick, and the meter-watcher didn't give me a ticket. (If I get the job I definitely won't be driving a car to get there!)

Tune of On Broadway
Upper West Side helpful New Yorkers version
In three acts
They say the parking's really tight on Broadway
They say there are no spaces anywhere
But when I'm feeling out of luck
I notice by a FedEx truck
A helpful guy who really seems to care.
They say the rules are really strict on Broadway
With signs that trap the folks that have no clue
I thought I'm fine but you know what
Guy Two helps me out of this spot
Cause this here spot was too good to be true
They say that there's no parking right on Broadway
Go find a side street then walk back, they all say
So I head north and will not quit
One hundred fourth, and look I fit
Guy three helps out, feels like a hit
Off Broadway

The current parking regulations on Broadway are ridiculous. If you are going to have meters in effect until 10pm there should be at least 2 hour parking permitted. Interestingly, the cross streets which have meters have them in effect only until 7:00 and permit 2 hour parking. The best thing for the restaurants along Broadway would be for meters to be in effect only until 7. The city also needs to fix all of the broken muni-meters.
