Religion be it Judaism. Islam or Christianity is the last refuge of the superstitious and feeble minded and is the enemy of modernity.

I guess that shooting, bombing, and driving over non-believers is the modern Islamic version of striking off the heads of those who disbelieve.
All of those Muslims who believe in Islam are ordered in writing by the Qur’an to convert or behead all Christian, Jewish, Buddhists, Hindus, Atheists, Sikhs, and other non-believers everywhere including US citizens in the USA and then cut off the fingertips of these nonbelievers.
The Orlando, Ft. Hood, 9/11, San Bernardino, NYC, New Jersey, and other Muslim assassins of US citizens were not "radical Islamic terrorists" but simply devout Muslim true believers obeying the written commandments of their Islamic Qur’an (their “bible”) and were only following their Islamic religion as dictated by the Qur’an and taught by local Islamic Imams at local US located Mosques!

Islam is less than 1400 years old. Christianity was already more than 600 years old when Muhammad appeared on the scene. When you consider the bloody sectarian wars the various Christian denominations were perpetrating (when not killing off us Jews and all other 'infidels') and factor in the Spanish and Roman inquisitions, the mass murders of Jews who the Christians blamed for the Black Plague, and the wholesale genocides by Catholics in newly occupied countries around the world (we'll leave fervently Catholic Adolf Hitler's actions out of this for now, though the Pope at the time didn't find anything wrong with the mass slaughter of Jews and Gypsies).
I think Islam has a considerable way to go before it spills as much innocent blood as Christians have done. Heck, the last witch burning under the Inquisition took place in 1850. Catholics and Protestants were burning each others churches down in the US over which of their two versions of the Lord's Prayer belonged in schools.
I expect if it comes down to it, the Catholics will go to war against the Jews & Protestants over which version of the 10 Commandments is used if we become a theocracy. The Catholics quietly removed the Second Commandment about not worshiping graven (sculpted) images since that is integral to their idea of Christianity, shifted 3 to 9 down 1 rung, & split the Tenth Commandment into two. Jews & Protestants still follow the original ones, which is why you only see plain crosses in Protestant churches.

A Muslim is a citizen of this tiny global village. The whole world belongs to Muslims.
What do you expect from a so called civilised nation? West must learn to respect and tolerate those who are different.
Muslim rapes of non-Muslim girls and women should be counted terrorist crime. If Muslims fart or sneeze or both at the same time, that should be counted as biological terrorism. All Terrorists are Muslims… Except the 99,6% that Aren't. We are not terrorist as west call us but we are victims of terrorist like BUSH.
All terrorists and extremists in the western countries are home grown. They are the product of western education which makes a man stupid, selfish and corrupt like majority of British MPs. There will never be an end to extremism as long as Muslim children keep on attending state schools with non-Muslim teachers.
Stop treating foreigners like garbage and they will stop ruining your precious country. Why did you let them in in the first place if you didn't want them here? They left everything in their countries because of your promises. Are you so anxious to please that you can't say "no"? I would love to see you go to a foreign land where you don't have any friends, you don't even know anyone and you don't speak the language, and start from scratch. I would just LOVE to watch you do that. Let them integrate and stop segregating them. What I want is people being nice to each other. I don't care about race.

Those Muslims who believe in Islam are commanded by Mohammed in the Qur’an to murder all US citizens that are not Muslims. I believe that Muslims should not be allowed to enter or to stay in the USA, unless they denounce their Qu'ran!
Tell me how ISIS, al Qaeda, the Taliban, Islam, plus our home grown local Muslim mass murderers living in the USA and Europe who are just simply obeying the commands of Mohammed as stated in his Qur’an to murder all non-believers are not a part of true ISLAM, as probably read and taught by the local Imams in our local mosques in the USA and Europe?

On Being Muslim in America.
I am not Muslim, however, I have been mistaken for one in Mumbai, Paris, and in Connecticut. Maybe because of my brown skin and dark beard. The identity attributed to me makes it easy for me to empathize with the sad plight of Muslims in America since 9/11, and especially after Mr. Donald Trump's ascendancy to presidency in this country. Ms. Jenan A. Matari's emotionally-charged letter only deepens that empathy.
Banning all Muslims except green card holders from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the U. S. is an uncivilized act precipitated by the imaginary perception of them as potential terrorists.
There's no evidence that any Iraqis or Syrians have ever been involved in
any terrorist acts on American soil. In fact, American military personnel (Special Forces) training and guiding Iraqi and Kurdish soldiers participating
in the successful war against ISIS would readily vouch for the fact that their
safety in Iraq is completely dependent on the warm support they receive
from peace-loving Iraqi guides and interpreters. Many thousands of these
Iraqis are pro-American and want to emigrate the U. S. now. Others are just
waiting for the defeat of ISIS to be completed. Turning them away now or later would not only be a dastardly act but also an act of betrayal of trust.

I'm glad that people are speaking out against the ban on Muslims. People should also speak out against the ban on Jews. Algeria, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Yemen, Bangladesh, Brunei, Malaysia and Pakistan ban Israelis (97.4% of all Israeli passports are held by Jews.)

There have always been and will always be xenophobes, bigots and racists in America as there are in most other democratic countries, driven as much by fear and ignorance as any innate hostility to those who are different. As we have seen recently, they exist even in countries such as Canada that take particular pride in being largely free of such prejudice.
What has changed now in America is that we have elected leaders from one of our major political parties to both the White House and in congress who exploit those fears and pander to them for their own ends. We have just switched from a president who appealed to our better angels to one who stirs our worst fears and instincts. That is America's great failure today and what sets us apart.

Jenan, As you ask us to consider your challenges, will you consider ours? I too have mixed heritage, born and raised in Los Angeles which is more liberal than much of this country. Yet I suffered horrific misogyny from birth and grew up essentially as an invisible slave...a multi-generational horror...and I am not alone. Millions of us have fought hard and long for the few steps of liberty we have gained. When I see a woman in a hijab asking us to respect her garment as a symbol of respect and protection, I want to ask: "Protection from who?" The history of violence against women and men in the name of "respect" is a trail of horrific tragedies born of ignorance held mostly in the shadows. Please read "Emmett Till’s Murder". For decades Sikh's have quietly worn turbans in the country with relative ease, and many wear eastern robes of various colors. Violence in the name of Jihad is terrifying and hijab's are closely related. Artists like Madonna often go to far for me, except when I see a hijab...then I want them as loud as possible. That said, there are extremists in many walks of life, and in the USA since 9/11 more people have died from choking on hotdogs than by Islamic terrorists. Ellen DeGeneres recently expressed wisdom through the eyes of Dory...: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dybBD1hbmF4

FBI statistics tell us that you are something like 3.5 times as likely to be killed by a right-wing militia type than a jihadi terrorist in the years since 9/11. Your chance of being hit by lightning is far, far greater. Falling out of bed and dying is orders of magnitude more likely, and your chance of being murdered by gun by a fellow American is something over 8,000 times more likely than being killed by a Muslim terrorist.
Constant harping on the fear of terrorist attacks that Usama bin-Laden began and the Republicans have continued to feed for 16 years is just a means of gaining control and power from the terrified sheep we have let ourselves become.

I feel beyond heartbroken you, not to mention the rest of the world which watches in horror as the indispensable country takes a moral, ethical, legal nosedive. I'd hug you if I could, and please know many, many, many of us are doing whatever is possible to us to confront and resist this horror.

Women need to show solidarity and I think one day for all of us wearing a hijab might be a start. Non muslim women would learn what it's like to be on that side of bigotry and give more thought to who's running their country. It would also show we care about our fellow women, being willing to take whatever bigotry comes their way for a day.

Salaam, Jenan,
The first amendment of the US Constitution grants all the right to practice their chosen religion (or no religion) without provocation, just as it prohibits anyone from imposing a 'state' religion. The founding fathers knew the tenets of Islam and some studied the Quran, like Jefferson, Franklin, and Adam, incorporating its wisdom into the Constitution. This law protects not just you as having been born here, but all who are in the territories claimed by the US, muslim, Jew, Christian, Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist. agnostic, Wiccan, or atheist; immigrant or non-immigrant; natural or naturalized citizen and non-citizen. All but the indigenous peoples-the native Americans- are immigrant here: Europeans, African, or Asian or descendants of them.
Donald J Trump has violated not only the law but the raison d être of the United States of America, but he is not the first to have done so, just as we who profess Islam are not the first to have been discriminated against or to be threatened with expulsion or to be refused admittance or shunned for practicing our original rituals or celebrations. History is rife with atrocities done to immigrants and those who were born here: the natives, the African slaves, Jews, eastern Europeans, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Roman Catholics, and the Irish, just to name a few who have endured maltreatment. They have survived and so to shall we.
'I created you in diversity, not as enemy but to know one another.'

Rachida,
"The first amendment of the US Constitution grants all the right to practice their chosen religion (or no religion) without provocation."
The US Constitution also grants US citizens the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
Muslims are commanded in writing by their Qur'an to murder me since I am a non-believer, and deprive me of my right to life.
Maybe this is the place and the hour for those Muslims “who are people of peace" to put their bodies, their treasure and their blood on the line and fight against those Muslims and Imams within their community that are true believers and approve of the actions of Muslims killing Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and other non-believers in the USA as the Qur’an commands, until those true Muslims believers that believe in killing non-believers are completely EXTERMINATED from the face of the earth, and those parts of the Qur’an that commands Islamic True Believers to kill non-believers are permanently stricken from the Qur’an and accepted by all of the Islamic Imams worldwide.

One fifth the population of the world practices Islam. That's somewhere in the 1.5 billion range. Yet true jihadis number only a few thousand, and terrorists determined to strike at the West are only a segment of the jihadi movement. Jihad refers in part to protecting Islam (literally it means struggling or striving with a positive nonviolent aim) and does not in and of itself prescribe violence except if the threat against Islam is external and violent (a small sub category known as Jihad by the Sword). Donald Trump has assuredly made more Muslims fear for their religion, and thus become jihadis of the Sword than all of the social media from al-Qaeda, ISIS, and the Taliban (who really have no interest outside of the Pashtun homeland in Afghanistan and Pakistan).
ISIS sends its agents into Europe primarily to smuggle weapons in and to make alliances with criminal gangs to get more weapons in the Western European countries where gun control is strong and it is very difficult to procure one. I heard an ISIS representative being interviewed and he said that, because of the hundreds of millions of semi-automatic pistols and assault rifles in the US, there is no need to send in their own personnel. They can indoctrinate and recruit safely through social media and the recruits can easily get the weapons they need for terror attacks. Thanks a lot Wayne La Pierre and the NRA.

We've actually done a far better job of rebelling against human nature in this country than people have in most others. Is there a single Muslim-majority country where non-Muslims wouldn't feel more unwelcome than you occasionally feel here?

Indonesia.
I can't even believe I'm able to come up with an answer to this question. I shouldn't be able to. This country used to be the best place to live for every peaceful person. Now... I see a lot of tears from targeted groups.

To Jenan,
I offer you my words of support and stand with you as we try to resist this un-American administration. Know that you are constitutionally guaranteed the right to equal protection under the law. We have the support of many State Attorneys General who will fight for us in the courts. And we have the support of the majority of our fellow Americans.
As for the trolls, I expect their moment in the sun will be brief and soon enough they will crawl back under their dark dank bridges.

Too bad the "diverse" millennial generation didn't bother showing up to vote.
Everything that Trump is doing right now was foreshadowed in his campaign; we were all well aware that the Supreme Court hung in the balance and the outcome would last a generation.
Yet only 50% of millennials (now largest single generation) showed up to vote. And of those who did vote, 8% threw away their votes on third party candidates. Didn't that work out great?
Now I am constantly hearing and reading millennials exhorting us to "fight back". Really? It's too late kids - Republican control of all three branches of government means no one in power will pay heed to your tweets, marches and protests.
You'll get a chance for a small do-over in 2018, let's see if your passion to "fight back" will actually get you to the ballot box. We now see the cost of apathy.

Personally, I have never had the opportunity to talk with a Muslim woman.
They seem separate or distanced, often only in public with their relatives or husband. It is hard to get to know Muslim women. That's all I am going to say.

You probably have spoken with numerous Muslim women and didn't even know it. Muslim women are doctors, lawyers, scientists, stay at home moms, etc., and they don't appear different from you. The Muslim American women I know have American values. Some choose to wear hijab, others do not.
Perhaps you should go to an interfaith community gathering at a mosque and try to meet some women of the Muslim faith. You might be surprised at how much you have in common. Also, it is hard to hate someone you know.

I have Muslim friends, both men and women. Their families left Pakistan, Iran, and Indonesia to come to the U.S. because they didn't want to live under theocratic governments, and they had the means to leave. The people I know are well educated, good citizens, and as American as I am.

They're welcome to come to my church anytime too!

I appreciate your expression of the truth found so much in our nation. It disturbs me with the response by R.P and Ed happen to be so common. If either of you are truly christian (R.P and Ed) then I suggest you choose to follow biblical teachings.
For example: Galatians 5:22-23 reads: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."
1 Timothy 1:15 says "he saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost."
John 3:17 For lGod did not send his Son into the world mto condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
What do those 3 versus show us? Christ came to save sinners not condemn them. Christ showed love, kindness, patience, self-control as so many other things. Biblically, Christians are to live as Christ did.
For one religion to condemn another is a sad display of ignorance. If you truly ready any theological works, it is not a goal to harm others in the sake of your religion. If you choose to live properly, maybe...just maybe you may let them see the light of your faith and draw them to your religion.
Last statement I must make is about feminism. All women can choose to be feminists despite their religion. Feminism is about equality of the sexes. Basically, a Patriarchal society is unjust.

I believe that all US and all European citizens should practice ISLAMOPHOBIA by expressing fear, bias, prejudice and hatred towards all followers of Islam AND ALSO ANY OTHER RELIGION that commands their followers many times in writing to convert or murder all US and European citizens that are not Muslims!
The main enemy of the USA and Europe today is all of those people that believe in ISLAM and obey the Qur'an.

2
To start with, as I clearly recall, Trump stated he doesn't want "RADICAL ISLAMISTS" coming into this country. And not one news-media asked him as to just who is a radical Islamists, and replaced those two words with , due to poor knowledge, all Muslims. Its the media that has spun the incorrect news into chaotic whirlwind. What radical Islamist really is, someone like the Wahabies of Saudi Arabia, who want to destroy our way of life as it is today, i.e. co-education, same sex marriage, dancing, music, etc., etc. Trump was very specific. Its the media that has created this stupid situation.
10
Your logic is refuted by his not including Saudi Arabia in the ban. Any idea what that implies about his real, unstated agenda?
20
And please explain the test that determines who amongst Muslims is a radical Islamist, and who is safe by your standards.
15
Madigan,
Donald J Trump included ALL who are muslim as targets for discrimination, not just some. For some he chooses a registration procedure, for others expulsion, and for even others refusal of admittance. It is people like you who distort and dissemble Trump's pronouncements and who simply accept what he and others say without doing your own homework. Best go review what Trump has said he intends to do to us in violation of US and international laws. BTW, you probably should revisit the history of your own country before pointing fingers at another. And the word is ... Wahabi... learn Arabic or do not use it.

Banning muslims is actually a nonviolent, rational response to their fascist ideology that has been, with its founder as their venerable example, violent, intolerant, and horrific beyond measure. Musims must finally be confronted with the horrors islam has inflicted on humanity instead providing lies to portray themselves as blameless victims.
Peaceful coexistence is an unislamic concept. It has never happened and probably never will.

You might want to research your Christian history a little bit before spouting off about the intractability of other religions.
20
Rob,
You should do some fact checking before misinforming others.
Perhaps you should read about Mohammed before making ignorant statements about him, so here are some authors who have written about him and Islam-in English for the monolingual 'American' you appear to be: Karen Armstrong, Martin Lings, John Esposito, and Tariq Ramadan. Or, take a course on Islam or Comparative Religions at your local post-secondary institutions-community college, 4-year college or university. Go to an interfaith conference or service. And remember this Arabic word: Iqraa! Read! Study!
Read! Study!

I reference the past but my comment is about what is an appropriate response to a horrific ideology and how it is currently lived. You might want to read the foundational islamic texts and simply open your eyes to the horrors and hate it still incites and motivates to an unbelievable degree.

She forgot one other category: she's a liberal. Which is why she adds in the Dakota pipeline as one of the issues for why she doesn't like Trump. It's not about Trump supposedly being racist or hating Muslims (and note that there is not one comment every made by Trump to show that he is bigoted against Muslims). It's about progressives not getting their way. And yes, saying you're a muslim-feminist is an oxymoron given how women are treated in muslim-majority countries. Care to comment on that, Ms. Matari? or does that complicate the simplistic narrative you're pushing?

Trump campaigned explicitly on a Muslim ban and restrictions. Guiliani is on the record stating that Trump told him he wanted a "Muslim ban" and asked him to find "the right way to do it legally. "Substitute the word "Christian," "Jew, " or "Catholic," if you have no empathy for the Muslim faith, and begin to feel how xenophobic and bigoted it is.
The mosque in my city has to have 24/7 visible security. How tragic that is.

Are you aware of how women were treated in this country as little as 50 years ago? Actually that's being generous...women are often still treated with a gross lack of respect in this country. Else we would not have a groper in Chief.

That was then.
This is now.
Compare America today to other countries today.

The most important thing that people can do is to stand together. We all have our unique qualities but we all have something to bring to the table. Make no mistake, the current administration's strategy is "divide and conquer." That is, turning rural against urban; bi-coastal against heartland; blacks against whites against Hispanics against Jews against Muslims against Natives against immigrants; straights against gays and transgenders; etc. All of this is for the administration's cronies own nefarious interests: using their privileged positions for their own personal gain; gutting the government to make it pliable; undermining our long-standing commitments to allies and partners in trade, defense and issues that affect all of us worldwide. We have witnessed a very American coup over the past few months. Left unchecked, our beloved and singular nation will be undermined.
I would ask people to get to know each other without precondition. Every group has features that others might find puzzling, objectionable or strange. Try to overcome these differences by discovering our shared humanity and values. It is quite obvious that most values that any one of the aforementioned groups have are shared by all of these groups.
It is not hyperbole that we live in very dangerous times. Most of that danger emanates from within our own borders.

And within our own hearts and minds, each one of us, myself included.
And, just one note of non-alternative fact: It was recently reported that there are approximately 1.6 million Muslims in the World, and it is estimated that 40,000 are terrorists. It should also be added than many more Muslims are killed by terrorists than non-Muslims everywhere.

The background here is that Progressives have demonstrated that they’re not simply secularists or even uniformly hostile to religious expression; rather they’re uniquely and peculiarly hostile to traditional—“unrepentant”—Christianity. The easy explanation might be that traditional Christians are also more conservative socially, but the way it is seen is as an attempt to subvert the very authority of hegemonic institutions like churches, unless they can be used for their politics. Mosques will not be far behind. All religious people have similar concerns, though they may not yet recognize it. Things are currently out of alignment.

When "unrepentant Christianity" decides to eschew proselytizing and demonizing of those who aren't good Christians according to their Doctrine, then I will be a lot more accepting of this religion...or any other that treats "others" this way. There is no belief on this Earth, including my own - atheism - the can be proven as absolute truth. Believe is one thing, truth is another. Until Evangelical Christians in particular learn to be more accepting of the idea that their beliefs are just that, beliefs, and that philosophically speaking other beliefs are equally valid, I will continue to have a problem with those who insist on telling me I am somehow in need of fixing for believing differently. If you want to label that as progressive (in a manner that demonizes the label), fine, but to me it's simply a matter of respect.

Funny Ed, in my experience and what I have encountered is the unrepentant christians that are quick to denounce the freedom of other religions. Never realizing that they make those statements under the same blanket of freedom. What is also perplexing is the very little that I know of the christian faith indicates they of all people should the most accepting of any "others". Something like "Do onto others....."

An Australian friend of mine once opined that in the 18th century England sent all of its criminals to Australia and all of its religious nuts to the North American colonies. Aussies are pretty much in agreement that they got the better of the deal.
