Could this gorgeous thing be served after instead of before the main course? To follow, say, Amanda Hesser's oxtail w celery on this site?....

All the variations on the citrus salads sound so delicious!! I have a Cara Cara orange every morning- they are so much tastier than the regular navel orange. I will definitely try at least one of the salads soon. I like citrus fruits very much and am sorry when they are not in season. The health benefits are great especially from grapefruit. Thanks for featuring the recipes.

I've been making a version of this for years! Avocado and grapefruit goes especially well with Mexican style food; for color and texture, add pomegranate seeds to sliced blood oranges.

An admirable mix of sweet fruit and savory vegetables. To tell the truth, I would prefer the fruit separately from a salad of olives, radishes, endive, celery, and onions.

Add a pinch of cumin seeds, toasted and then ground, to take this to the next level.

Doesn't this feel eerily similar to the Franny's recipe (page 92)? Feels like the book ought to get a citation at least.

Perhaps the taste of the dead of winter should be dead of winter. To add to it a splash of citrus if such splash is not central to one's experience of the dead of winter...well, isn't that a problem. Couldn't that kiss come from the pungent flavor of vinegar in a preserved vegetable or the citrus hint in a jam put aside for precisely when that cotrus is not available except at great expense and from great distance. Just wondering out loud.

Yes, great idea. But winter is when citrus is in season, so it's a lovely option if you have access to it.

To keep it sort of "local", I try to buy citrus from Florida as opposed to California ..
I feel it also supports the dying Florida citrus growers who struggle with development encroachment more and more
these days...
I make a similar salad with ruby grapefruit supremes, red onion, dill or tarragon, feta, shaved cauliflower and some bitter greens/arugula
