A Presidential Place of Honor, Unfilled for Now

If I were y'all, I'd thank God for small favors. May your presidential boardroom stay comb-over free.

What an interesting and quaint piece of writing. Now with regards to the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave: reading many of his supporters, you would think that in his first month he performed some monumental great feats to improve our standing for humanity that were not reported by the NYT. C'mon let go of your partisanship for one minute and truly see that you were duped by a con man who absolutely loves the status quo and is totally unprepared to lead this govt. Reiterating the words I used at the beginning, interesting and quaint, two traits that are not being practiced in Washington now. Why in the world would they bother with any type of decorum or civility?

It would not really show respect for the office to showcase a photo of -45, who has no respect for it himself.

Try for an autographed photo from Putin One it arrives, mention it in an article. That should do the trick.

Failing that, an autographed photo from the real president, Steve Bannon, probably would be better. More accurate, anyway.

To be honest I'd be surprised if he does imitate his predecessors. He made it very clear he was not going to be doing the same old song and dance that has been going on for decades.

If NYT receives a Trump photo, I most sincerely hope it can continue to be displayed without becoming an implied endorsement of unethical, illegal, inhuman actions by the government of the US.

You know what? With this administration and this President - it is more important than ever to tell the truth. The TRUTH, not someone's version of the truth, not an "alternate" truth - but the only truth. This doesn't mean that if you run a story that calls out our President for lying based on truth and facts, that you must somehow counter it by bringing up someone else's misdeed. There is only one President now and the buck stops with him. And a fact is a fact and a lie is a lie. Tell it like it is, not dressed up, not justified, not how you want it to be. The truth is what sets us free, not alternate truths. There can be only one truth, period.

Re. your headline, "A Presidential Place of Honor, Unfilled for Now."

Yes.

THIS is why I subscribe to The Times. Drag your feet as long as possible on hanging that photo. PLEASE.

You should have the youngest Mr. Sulzberger sit down and write a nice note to President Trump asking for an autographed picture for the family collection. You're not entitled to one, based on who your ancestors were, of course, but if you ask nicely...

I often bash the Times for many obvious reasons, so I am surprised that these portraits adorn the boardroom. It is a touching and classy piece of Americana, and I hope the tradition continues.

Just look at all the headers in todays NYTimes. This is unbiased reporting? Contrast the front pages when Barack Obama first took office--ecstatic, glowing and effusive. Of course this plays directly into leading many previous readers to simply dismiss this as punditry and propaganda. It may almost be a point of honor to President Trump that his portrait is glaringly absent. Does the New York Times not have ONE good thing to say about Mr. Trump?
gk (Santa Monica)
The NY Times isn't Pravda. Why this neediness for "something good" about Trump ? You can get plenty of that from Kellyanne Conway or, on Twitter, from the man himself. Read the NY Times to see if it's true.

@toddchow name one "good" thing that could be said as Mr Trump bullies & tweets his way in the Oval Office; frightening the sane among us, our international friends; aggressively issuing edicts(executive orders) in rapid succession, one after the other with Ryan sneering satisfied smile at his right shoulder with a deadpanned McConnell slightly behind. Their wildest Heritage Foundation dreams come true!
RM (Los Gatos)
Neither the Times nor any other news source is obligated to say anything good about anyone.
RML (New City)
We need to look at his behavior, much as you would a child.

His behavior indicates that he needs the approval of the NYTimes and may actually skim it; we know he doesn't read. He cannot and will not process facts and is content to make stuff up, most of it we are learning to be lies. I presume that one of his priorities is to have an aide looking at this site constantly.

Therefore, much as he tweets [my gosh, a president reduced to that!] in response to Fox, you will receive an effusively endorsed photo [with a touch of snark] delivered by a trump messenger shortly.

As we know, Mr. Trump does not feel obliged to follow tradition nor does he have the tact to follow through with such a long-standing occurrence if only for face value (I can almost appreciate his honesty. Almost.). By the way, while this article speaks to his disregard for what has become a standard, Mr. Trump will likely view it as whining cry by The Times for his autographed photo (You're so vain, I bet...).
Mr. Trump marches to the beat of his own drum; therefore, I find none of this surprising. Do you?

He answers to me, the People, not to your newspaper.
I want him doing the country's work, not 8 more years of traditional/ceremonial gestures that do not help the majority of the people in this country.

Sorry elites.
You could always buy a photo, like the folks at the inauguration did.
Jerry Cordaro (Cleveland OH)
That's true. There are plenty of pictures available, I'm sure.
shirls (Manhattan)
%Midway "the majority of the people in this country" did NOT vote for him!
