The 'I've found joy and redemption through motherhood and wifedom' does not escape me. Another attempt at rebranding in much the same manner as Kim Kardashian.

"The 'women who work' discourse adopted by Ms. Trump frames this all as a woman’s choice, rather than the predictable and deliberate outcome when feminist gains are warped by conservative public policy." BINGO
A couple of themes I heard/read by women who support and "admire" Trump (despite voiced concerns about how Trump treats women). They admire:
(a) the success of the Trump family--even though Daddy Trump made his money the old- fashioned way by hucksterism, flimflam, smoke-and-mirrors, and went bankrupt how many times?
(b) Ivanka's glamour--yes, including the image of Ivanka with a briefcase in one hand and balancing a child on the other hip. They realize their stressed out work-family lives will never be like this, but, like following the Kardashians, Trump-supporting women enjoy the fantasy of the glamorous lives of wealthy women who appear to have it all--even if these middle- and working-class observers personally do not and know they never will.
It's pretty clear by now that one of the major differences between Republican-supporting women and Democratic women is that the former prefers stereotyped femininity & fantasy over reality, whereas the latter prefers feminism and reality, and rejects fairy-tale fantasies about women.
Which of these 2 kinds of women buys into the GOP male view that: unequal pay for women is fine; men have every right to control women's reproductive decisions; and father always knows best? Why?
No spending tax$$ for women & children!

The media and establishment they mainly serve have a really high daily quotas of dirt to throw at President-elect and his family and this is - with all due respect - yet another example of it.
Media which were nothing like "watchdogs of democracy" when they, embedded, pushed the country and the world into invasion, occupation, huge loses of lives and fortune with totally fabricated scare of "Saddam's weapons of mass destruction" which he is "able to launch within 45 minutes". They have aqlso been - for decades - producers of "fake news" and massively manipulated news, these days, for example, labeling bestial torture and hate filled insults of a white victim in Chicago not as a racist hate crime but as a handicapped hate crime.
So Ms. Trump's feminism is "dangerous" we are being told and should believe? Tell me that Putin is behind this "attack on American democracy" and the approved version of feminism as well?

This is exactly the kind of incisive journalism I need and seek. Feminism is always given a bad name and has given so much and should not be trampled on by the like of Ms. Trump and her propaganda machine that works for her Brand and is not a reflection of working womens lives.

I hope that the Trump children enjoy what they're doing. They have immense wealth, but I have the impression that they are tightly controlled. I hope their last word is not "rosebud."

She's led a completely privileged life. Never missed a meal in her life.
The apples never fall far from the tree. "Trump" in any form = "empty suit."

There is nothing more important in society today than raising well adjusted happy and healthy children. If you risk at parenthood, you fail in life. Ivanka Trump is wise and smart to put her family first as she knows there is plenty of time later to concentrate on a career. She has the financial means to stay at home and many women would love to be in her situation. She knows that she cannot have it all so she chooses family over career. She appears to be a confident young woman who knows what she wants in life. Careers come and go but family is forever as is evidenced by the support of the Trump clan. Many people would love to have this support system.

I don't disagree that Ivanka's "brand" of feminism isn't much of feminism. Unfortunately Ms. Filipovic's isn't either.
The feminist movement, like the rest of the left, has been hijacked and stifled due to the unreasonable demands of other lobby groups. One example is how feminists are intimidated into silence when abusive behavior towards women is committed by men of color or Muslims. There was an incident in Germany where a woman falsely reported that her rapist was European when he was actually a Muslim immigrant. Another Swedish women expressed guilt when her Somalian rapist faced deportation.
It is clear that the race card and Islamaphobia card trump all and white feminists have been guilted into submission into being silent or apologists for sexism when it comes from people of non-white backgrounds and to believe that white men are the sole culprits into what is wrong with society and our world in general.
It is ironic that feminists fought now to be subservient to men but now to be part of the feminist fold, Caucasian women are demanded to be subservient to men from some of the most misogynistic and unjust cultures that have ever existed. They are expected to constantly apologize and be shamed for the crimes of slavery and racial violence despite men of color contributing far more to these horrors than white women.

My two cents worth. The grass may appear greener in Ivanka's world. And many of us probably wouldn't mind trying all that luxury and wealth and beauty on for size for awhile. However, as wisdom suggests, real lasting happiness and contentment comes not from what we accomplish on the outside or even whether we choose to be a stay at home mom or work outside the home or do both but from what we accomplish on the inside. Namely, the level of personal growth and development we achieve through lots of hard inner work that enables us to scrape away our programmed cultural, familial, social, even religious conditioning (we just happened to get due to the happenstance of our birth) and find out who we really are; our real genuine authentic selves.

Feminism has different meaning for different women. For many, it means a woman is no less than a man intellectually, hence equal pay; but there are still differences such as physical strength, motherhood, and the key role a woman plays in the family, among other things.
Then, you have the "feminists" who aggressively push their agenda of war on men, and want to dictate to other women how to lead their lives.
It seems that Ms. Filipovic belongs to the latter group. Poor creature.
I absolutely love being a woman and being treated by men as such.
Vive la difference!

When I was around the age of 4 I stood in the archway that separated the kitchen from the dining room and observed the male relatives being waited on by their wives, my aunts and mother. The men appeared to be enjoying themselves, the women not so much. I recall thinking that motherhood and wifery were not very attractive to me. At 4 I was already accused of being independent. Something I have heard from virtually every male I ever cared about. Always hurled as an accusation. By high school I was declaring that marriage and children were not for me. I have not regretted my choice. I have had a fabulous life full of travel, music, theater, lovers, etc. I teach young and old alike, and the one thing I hear over and over from my female students and friends is how lucky I am that I am not married. The day Ivankas deplorable father stole the presidency my female friends with children all said "you are so lucky not to have children".
Indeed.
Indeed.

Ivanka did not choose traditional motherhood. She has a full-blown career and was the number two person under her father in the Trump organization until she could either choose to stay in NYC, run the business, and go down to DC on the weekend to see her husband (which breadwinner has the kids five days a week?), or do what she is doing now: move to DC so the family is in one place and where her husband has an official job and she has, supposedly, unofficial jobs: wife, mother, and father's consigliere.
Ivanka can have her "old" job back whenever she wants to. She probably owns a percentage of the Trump Organization (worked out in a way that provides every tax advantage). Few working mothers and fathers (let's stop treating childcare as only a women's issue in terms of careers) have these options.
Ivanka can have it all, and can change her mind any time she wants. What was particularly galling to me was when Sean Hannity interviewed the Trump brood (including Tiffany, minus Baron) and directed all his verbiage about the "one" who would run the Trump organization while Pops is in DC to Eric, mostly, and Don Jr.
It was sexist and an insult to the real brain and most polished in the brood: Ivanka. I am not an Ivanka fan, however, as she speaks only to women who can afford to take time off. She's no feminist, because she doesn't ask men to do their fair share. Remember what her Daddy said about doing diapers--Nyet! Ivanka Trump: Feminist Fraud.

In what universe would Ivanka have started a business in luxury goods at such a young age without the capital investment of her father and friends? How did hordes of expert advisers, lawyers, and designers ensure the "success" of her business? Keep in mind her status as a a successful business woman is built on her father's name and contacts.
21
It is ridiculous to expect any woman associated with Donald Trump to be a feminist. It is pointless to berate them for not being feminist.
I did not vote for Trump. I would never vote for him. However, I think this "news" item was unnecessary and unworthy of the Times.
Trump was elected. We, who did not vote for him, need to choose our battles wisely. We need to fight those battles wisely. We need to avoid being foolish.
I have always supported Planned Parenthood and legal abortions. I intend to up my financial support of PP instead of attacking Ivanka Trump for being who she is.

Attractive people are usually given some weird allowance to balance ambition with likability. Ivanka's likability (if that is what it is) is rooted in her groomed, wealthy appearance in the same way that people "like" the Hiltons or Kardashians. But I don't think this is about liking at all; it's sicker than that. It's the other side of that weird phenomenon in which people "hated" Hillary. It more irrational, emotional problem than healthy admiration.
Ivanka is not a feminist, but it has nothing to do with motherhood. Ivanka seems aimed at pleasing Trump as much as possible (which he appeared to have molded early on). She also seems to be inclined to his lack of ethics, and her partner certainly is. Yes, she's better than the men around her, but that isn't saying much. If you confuse Ivanka's privileged-given freedoms with feminism, big mistake.

If even once Ms. Trump said a single word against her father belittling other women I would believe her aplomb.
Yes, Ivanka is beautiful, polite outside and she reached her status to be the ideal feminist with help in every way. Surely she has chefs, child care at home plus other services all of which she could afford.
There are mothers who does more than two jobs just so her children could get education have dinner at the table, have sleepless nights when one is sick yet goes to their work so they don`t get terminated.
I am sure Ivanka loves her children as much but easily could take time off still having her million dollar business going.
Ivanka Trump is not typical everyday Mom.

What are Ivanka Trump's interests? She promotes her father and and works in her father's business. She also has her own fashion brand. She is a devoted mother and persuaded her father to give family leave to female employees. There is nothing to criticize and much to praise. She is a traditional female plus, but the majority of women can't use her as a role model because they can't follow her example without her advantages.
Feminism promotes expanded possibilities for women (equal opportunity). The consequences of equal respect and opportunity would be more women in high places at work and in politics. Feminism also promotes greater participation for men in raising children, as fathers. Feminists do not see family as a "woman's issue". The father has a great deal more than money to contribute to his family. Ivanka Trump is MIA on these issues. She'sall for being a traditional female that does more. She's weak tea as a feminist.

While the premise of the article is shaky, the examples Ms. Filipovic gives belie that premise. Yes, Ms. Trump-Kushner is not your run-of-the-mill feminist and in fact would be at the head of a failed company with its frumpy clothing and fake jewelry no stylish woman wants were it not for the support afforded to her in her gilded cage.
In the context of that cage Ivanka has done very well for herself. How that translates into helping other women do well remains to be seen.
It is clear that she has her father's ear, but if her soft whispers become strident demands she will be thrown on the trash heap like most every other woman in his life.
Convincing her father to support maternity leave is a no-brainer; it bolsters the traditional female role of mother for women who work outside the home.
But if Ivanka were to push for family leave, giving men equal footing in child-rearing, her father's acquiescence would not be assured.
In my opinion there are no real or fake feminists. There are women who have come up against patriarchy in some aspect of their lives and there are women who have not yet come up against it. The former are feminists and the latter are not yet feminists. Ms. Trump lives and works and raises her children between the two.

Ivanka shows us how easy it is to be feminist-like and run a successful company alongside a running a household and raising three children. Neither she nor her her husband have to clean house or cook a family meal or do the dishes afterward.
The only applause she gets from me is for not sitting on her butt while her children and home are cared for by hired help.
It remains to be seen whether Ivanka's feminism will extend to true family leave instead of the maternity leave she has convinced her patriarchal father to support. The difference is not subtle; maternity leave for a woman after childbirth is a pre-feminist notion. Family leave for the mother or father or both is a newer, and more feminist notion.
I will watch to see how Ms. Trump evolves, if at all, to a more feminist position.
I wish her luck and a dawning understanding of her power.

Many of us who are now afraid that Trump will allow Ryan and McConnell to take away our earned Social Security and Medicare benefits entered our professions/careers when most middle class women were expected/required to stay home once they married. The only women who worked were single or poor or involved in a family business. I well remember being the only spouse employed outside my home at early executive events for my husband. At that time many women were pioneering as doctors, lawyers and small business owners, but women in upper management or at executive levels were often those whose male relatives owned the company. Unfortunately that is still too often the case.
Ivanka Trump is not a realistic role model for most women--either those who have the luxury of staying home or those who must earn an income. She has been the "good daughter" in marrying the man who can join the family business, however.
I resent the division of women into "traditional" stay at home (these days the unemployed) and women with careers or jobs. Women as an identity group have much more in common than where they spend their time working and who benefits from their work. It is an honorable pursuit to raise healthy children who benefit from a parent who can spend time with them. It is equally honorable to love one's children enough to work 3 jobs to give them a healthy future. It is honorable to be a community volunteer or work 18 hour days. It is a woman's choice. That was the fight.

It strikes me as rather small and unnecessary at this juncture to criticize Ivanka Trump's feminism. She does appear to be a civilizing influence on her father, which is good. And even rich girls can be oppressed and forced to live in a gilded cage.
On the other hand, nothing about her daughter-of-the-boss "professional" life remotely prepares her to understand what ordinary women experience in the workday world. Nor does her life as a wife and mother (who has never felt the pressure of 24-7 responsibility for housecleaning, laundry, child care, cooking, shopping, etc.) prepare her to understand what ordinary women's lives are like.

Feminism Schmeninism. Ivanka Trump Kushner is an oligarch. It's nice, I suppose, that she's taken on the "mission" of helping working women, but let's call a spade a spade. Ivanka Trump will never lose her job because she had to stay home with her sick children. She will never worry about going bankrupt because someone in her family gets sick or she loses her health insurance. She will never worry about how to pay for college tuition. She has servants, nannies, governesses, cooks, drivers and assistants. She can not speak for working women because she can not possibly understand our lives or the challenges we all face. She seems like a lovely woman but please. She can not speak for any of us.
87
The only interest I have in Ivanka is that her husband, Jared, is going to be serving the president-elect in violation of nepotism laws, not to mention the ethical conflicts posed by his businesses. If she has any decency she will ask him to step down.
As far as her opinions, or lifestyle, or fashion choices etc, they are of no interest to me whatsoever. This is not about pop stars, it's about running the country.
If her father happens to value her opinion, fine, but that is his business not mine. It's his decisions that will affect my life, not hers.

Ivanka, the privileged daughter is extremely shrewd and a marketing talent. Trump family would make sure to increase the dynasty's business volume to grow by 100 times within next four years. The new cabinet is a joke and unprecedented. All of our ex-President's had one thing in common as they realized governance is tough and must be run by talented leaders. Not the con man we elected- he selected them based on how they supported him in the election. This will be a regime with corruption and absolute incompetence.
13
With her dyed blonde hair, tottering high heels, and surgically enhanced face and breasts, Ivanka Trump strikes me less as a feminist role model than as a projection of her father's narrow views on female beauty and worth. Her alleged business success is merely an extension of the brand her parents and grandparents built; its capital derives from those same real estate practices that excluded blacks, skirted the tax and building subsidy laws, and cheated smaller businesses of their rightful pay. Ivan's company is actually very small core operation that outsources its design, marketing, and manufacturing to (largely foreign) firms with often exploitative labor practices and no sign of the maternal leave policies Ivanka pretends to advance. So count me unimpressed. This career woman finds her a hypocritical and troubling figure very much in her father's mold.
29
At the risk of evincing PC shibboleths, the writer seems overwrought, ungenerous, and nitpicking about Ivanka Trump. The thing that grows tiresome is that, to liberals, there can be no such thing as a conservative feminist: There can be no good will displayed their way; they simply cannot exist.
You must be a statist to be a feminist. You must further agree with this modern academic conceit that there are no differences between the sexes whatsoever -- even by organic choice of women as free human beings -- and that any distributional difference of predilection reflects entrenched patriarchy.
Women are doing better than men when it comes to college degrees and the % of newly-minted lawyers. Yes, there are problems, notably -- and I think this deserves far more focus than it receives -- our culture's obsession with women's looks while not giving a commensurate damn about men's looks.
But this notion that somehow talking of "maternity leave" is reactionary, as if many people (and many of the world's religions, cultures, etc.) don't find an extraordinary and positive power in Woman as Mother, do not see this as diminutive, but do believe there are differences between the sexes -- this is just absurd Marxist pap.
The single most consequential proof of the ineffable difference between the sexes is the multiplicatively higher rate of violent crime by men in any random precinct on Earth. Yes it's ugly, but yes, it also approves there are intrinsic differences.

This is not so black and white. The news is filled with stories of the offspring of multimillionaires spending, losing, their inheritance . Trump instilled in his kids, a strong work ethic, and I give him credit and his kids credit.

Any woman who proudly supports her father after he makes degrading comments about women is not a feminist.

One Trump is enough.

Very classy. Attack the families.
Nice.

Both Ivanka Trump and Chelsea Clinton showed great perspicacity in choosing to be born rich.
Having everything given to them on a silver platter sure beats working hard and I ought to know.
You're all just jealous...

Ivanka needs to learn how to score some $800,000 speaking fees from Goldman and PACs to really cash in ! 30 minutes, no questions allowed!
17
I'm tired of the Melania and Ivanka bashing. It's not really news anymore. I wish the NYT wouldn't succumb to click bait.
23
Ivanka Trump should have to answer several questions before any interview.
How large is your household staff?
Who does your laundry?
Who cleans your house?
Who takes care of your children?
These questions are particularly important when she's pushing her upcoming book of advice for women. It would explain all those gauzy pictures of her with her children all dressed in perfectly pressed white.

It's amazing that fakery, flummery and greed are all genetic.
15
I am no fan of Trump. But seriously - attacking his daughter because she doesn't fit the author's very narrow definition of feminism? Faulting Ivanka for being born into a wealthy family? This op-ed piece comes off as nothing more than click-bait. You need to do better NYTimes.
30
Are these articles in NYT- this and the other one - Women who voted for the Chief Deplorable - are they attempts to normalize this Billionaire Administration?
12
Ivanka can do what she wants because she has the money to do it. Raise your hand if you believe she will "settle" her kids in DC without any help. She has plenty. She's not home vacuuming and doing laundry. She doesn't drive her 3 kids all over town for lessons or sports. Get real. She's got drivers, cleaners, nannies, a personal assistant or two. It doesn't matter if her husband never helps out, because she has staff to do that. Neither of them needs to do anything but exactly what they want to. Like her step-mother, who we're also supposed to believe is a model wife and mother, she is not an example of feminism, traditionalism or anything else. She is very, very, rich, and that tells all you need to know. Her "career" exists because she is her father's daughter. Like her brothers, she has never worked for anyone but him. Of course she can manage work and family. What woman wouldn't, given the same extreme advantages? What's shameful is that she facilitates, encourages and supports her father's disgusting behavior and speech toward and about women. Ivanka is not a role model for anyone.
55
Didn't get through all of this, but I doubt that neither Ivanka or Jared does dishes. And neither would I!
40
The dishes thing is a metaphor.

For those who ignorantly suggest that you can be a feminist, and make the kinds of choices Ivanka claims to have made: no, you can't. To be a feminist, in any material way, is to first and foremost understand the economics of being a woman. That requires an understanding of how the structure of wealth inequality is tied to the limits imposed on women who unlike Ivanka do not inherit millions of dollars.
Let's be clear: a poor woman who lives in rural Mississippi, a state where early abortion could soon be outlawed if Trump has his way, can't take a limousine to a state where it's safely available. Ivanka speaks for a man who not only abuses women in an overt way, but also champions the kind of ignorant, retrograde policy that is most inimical to women -- and children -- who are not economically advantaged.
And Ivanka acquiesces in his choices.
So for those who ignorantly suggest that

The "Ivanka model" entails starting out rich, so it really doesn't apply to the vast majority.
73
The truth in Ivanka's household is that the staff are raising the children and running the business. I bet Ivanka's days are mostly spent at the hairdresser, the gym, the tennis courts, with the personal trainer and at galas and society events. She breaks out now and then to go to a school meeting, say hi to the kids and then kiss them while she goes to the event of the day. Did you see the picture of her at a tennis match, with an off-the shoulder dress that made her look like Melania? If you think she spends much time with her children, you are dreaming.
94
Ivanka is as much a con artist as her father. She seeks to hide Trump's misogyny and anti climate science behind a pretty face and a weak pseudo feminist agenda. She set up Al Gore for humiliation when she arranged a meeting with her father, who then immediately appointed a notorious anti-science crackpot to his cabinet. No one should treat Ivanka with any degree of seriousness.
155
ivanka is, like her dad, a greedy, fake know- nothing product of privilege. she is not a feminist and she is not a decent person.
86
Ivanka Trump Kushner is married to an orthodox Jew and thus imagine if she had to cook and follow the strictures of her husband's faith herself, w/o help. And have a glamorous career. And be in the news looking as terrific as the wife abd daughter of wealth should look. And in general, live a life utterly at odds with that of most working women and mothers. As Filipovic writes, "[l]east feminist of all: "The 'women who work' discourse adopted by s. Trump frames this all as a woman's choice, rather than the predictable and deliberate outcome when feminist gaines are warped by conservative public policy."
27
So, in other words, rich women are different from middle and lower class women? Thanks for the insight.
45
Peter J. Pitts: Yes, that is very true but she is a rich woman who uses fake feminism as a cheap marketing ploy to get middle and lower class women to buy her cheap garbage or at least to aspire to her fake lifestyle. There's the difference.
9
The real problem is motherhood is not highly valued like earning a huge income is.
54
Perhaps young women should stop producing future consumers and taxpayers until motherhood is better valued. Beats whining.

Ivanka may be a wonderful dedicated daughter, and mother to her children.
She could be perfectly delightful.
But Ivanka can be counted on to parrot the corporate line as when she appeared with her father and blamed the media for saying he fails to respect women.
She helped him not take responsibility for his comments and behavior that demeaned women.
Further, her interest is very likely in her brand and image.
Checking more deeply, you find the contractor involved with her clothing does not offer paid maternity leave.
And you'll find that Ivanka declined to comment on this fact.
Although she implied in presentations that she actually provides it.
Almost 100% of her clothing is made overseas.
And really--who knows the conditions of Trump industries' out-sourced workers or if they are in sweatshops.
Women were often low-wage seamstresses in off-shore factories.
We recall the images of crowded sewing tables and old buildings that at times caught fire in years past.
As to one's reputation in the business, what's worth noting is this:
Karen Leland, president of the Sterling Marketing Group in California observed of Ivanka:
“Her business practices aren’t consistent with her advocacy.”

Joanne: “Her business practices aren’t consistent with her advocacy.” Such an excellent point! Also, her shoe factories have come under fire for sweatshop conditions and a line of scarves was recalled because they were highly flammable. Not to mention the fact that she rips off the work of real designers and passes it off as her own. Fake feminist for sure but also fake in every other way.
9
The "fake feminist" were the ones that excused Bill Clinton's behavior with women back in the 90's due to their partisanship.
A true feminist would not abandon their principles just because of political bias. Where are your loyalties? To women or to the Democratic party.

48
All of the Trumps are money grubbers and power hungry. Fake feminist? No, Ivanka Trump is a 'real' opportunist. And so are her brothers.
Their focus is on what all of this will do for their "brand" and making more money over the long haul. They could care less about what will happen to the citizens of this country--their concern about the average person is part of the con.
All indications at this point is that the level of corruption associated with this administration will be beyond anything we have seen before.

Pres. Trump should pass a law requiring 100000 Canadian visitors to South Florida next month to leave a proper tip for the waitress, eh - and in USD. Show your support for waitresses, the original Feminists, eh.
16
Perhaps waitresses in South Carolina should be paid a living wage, along with everyone else in the state, and not have to rely on foreign visitors tipping them generously to make up the wages they're not being paid. Tipping goes back to the early post-slavery tradition of still not paying black people wages for their work, and making them totally dependent on the generosity of those they "served."
5
I would guess that ultimately Ivanka's business will suffer from association with her offensive father.
66
The Democrats should recruit Ivanka. They want a woman president so bad that they cheated and conspired to nominate Hilary. If they were to recruit Ivanka, they could run her in 2024 and she would win, then they would have what they want!
35
What an ironic comment, given the fact it looks like Donald colluded with Russia to win this election, and had moles in the FBI that assisted him as well.
Half of his staff are Russian-connected. He praises stolen emails. He called for the hacking of emails and Russia obliged.
Do you remember how he bragged about his campaign's 3 voter suppression efforts?
Must've worked since he won by less than 100,000 votes in 3 key states.
Your comment offends.

Many studies have shown that marriage quality takes a major nose dive when children arrive.
The answer to sustainable policies that makes nuclear family life possible is to not have kids or have no more than one or two.
To that end, ALL tax and benefit concessions that are made for children should end after the second child.

It is important to keep in mind, I think, that the most significant achievements of both Ivanka and Jared Kushner was being born multimillionaires.
167
I see Ivanka Trump as a smart business woman. Being constantly next to her father at official functions, she will cut a glamourous figure. She wants to be stylish and admired, but we won't be seeing her wearing haute couture of French, Italian luxury brands. Instead she would wear her own design, surreptitiously promoting her collection. As a fashion designer this offers her the golden opportunity to show off. She will look elegant without digging deep into her pockets.
19
Ivanka doesn't design her products; she pays others to do that. In her own words, she's an entrepreneur, not a designer.

Money smoothes all rough edges. I've been married to a great man for 11 years next month but in almost a decade of marriage I would say 90% of our disagreements either stemmed from a lack of, or could be solved by, money. Like when he totaled the car in 2009 and our insurance doubled and our new car payment was $150 higher or when he deployed for 15 months and I spent more on activities for the kids then I should have and got into a lot of credit cared debt. The military's takes a lot out of families but the outside is so awful to regular people militarylife seems almost idyllic.
Sure we've only had 5 of the last 6 anniversaries together and he missed all of his kids births but at least when our youngest had a seizure last year and it turned out to be PS epilepsy we didn't have to worry about our baby AND the possibility of a 30,000 surprise emergency bill. What a terrible stressor for the average family!
Now, If we had the money to afford a full time Nanny we wouldn't have anything to argue about!

Anyone who's not taking seriously the central theme of this article that Ivanka is a fake feminist (and how that helps Trump), hasn't read the interviews, on the home page, of the women who voted for Trump.
(Which is an interesting story itself, if it weren't raising my blood pressure from being unable to rebut their assertions) :)

"It’s a palatable way to mesh old sexist ideas about women as nurturers and helpers "
What in this world is not sexist to this woman? It's the women who give birth and produce the nutrition to feed their young. It's a biological reality.
What is the author going to do when, or if, she has a baby? Farm it out to contractors? And then there is her boyfriend, who she has followed because of his job. What's the point of marriage anyway? (What is marriage for?) What will he do in regard to a child? Adopt it, leave it to mommy to raise? Or will mommy even raise her child herself? Gawd forbid she has to cook meals and clean up the mess in the house that children, and adults, make. And the change diapers, such demeaning anti-feminist "work" and drudgery!

Freedom. Choice. Self identity. Ivanka has all of that in spades, and all the left has to say is how much they hate her choices.
19
The best choice any of the Trump kids made was being born rich. All their subsequent choices spring from that one.

When I see a woman who changes her 'faith' for her husband, I question her faith to begin with. By definition, 'faith' is something believed, how do you change what you believe?
When I see a woman who sits on daddy's lap when she's mature enough to understand that can seen as inappropriate, or kissing daddy on the lips as a mature woman, or permitting his hands on her body as some of the photos out the the public show, I think Stockholm syndrome. I hope I wrong on that, but her father has made vulgar comments about dating her, and has even commented publicly that he's not always respectful of women. Yet she defends him as 'pro-woman'. This is not what I view as feminist behavior.
And I'm betting she's never cleaned a toilet, and may not even have changed her kid's diapers. In short, she has led a life of insulation from reality and therefore has few creds to speak to the issue of feminism, by my lights.

Let's face it. If Ivanka wasn't a Trump, and instead a liberal Democrat, she would be held up by the NY Times, Hollywood, and the rest of the Media as a shining example of the modern feminist woman.
And it is the double-standard, meanness and bitterness by the Left, that was the driving force behind the election of her father to the the presidency.
Keep it up you intolerant angry liberals, a GOP 60 vote majority in the Senate in 2018 is becoming increasingly inevitable with every psycho-hateful article like this.

I'm already sick and tired of seeing Ivanka, Donny junior and Eric Trump standing beside or behind Donald Trump.
It looks line none of them want to cross their unhinged father. It must be tough to hear your father tell(or tweet) several lies daily. If they were to stand up to them he might cut them out of his will.
For their own sake the Trump kid's should try to find work other than working for their dad.

Apple trees have apples. I am on a full boycott of every company that sells her cheap garbage made in China and other places (not so tough getting rid of Amazon Prime - shopping locally, supporting locally all good). She is as much a racist and xenophobe as her father. Their greed is insatiable.
80
I still can’t get it into my head that a single woman in this country voted for Mr. Trump.
I used to think that women were smart.
I used to think that women were smart.

I remember once seeing the trmp family on Oprah. The creepy spectacle made clear that daddy was in charge. He did almost all the talking, and when the others spoke it was with the reticence and caution of abused children when the social worker comes to visit. It was obviously rehearsed and designed to assert an image of a happy family, though anyone could see otherwise. Twisted.
53
Feminism? What has it done for ordinary women? The women who now are more depressed than ever. Not only do they have to hold down two jobs; one at home taking care of the children and family and one in the workplace to contribute to the family's financial security.
Please, I wouldn't about Ivanka's feminism or lack thereof. She came from wealth and married into it. She has no financial worries whatsoever so she is basically free to do what she likes. How can the writer imagine that she can or cannot be a model for average working moms who struggle to make ends meet every day.

"Ms. Trump’s clear ambition remains unobjectionable in part because she seems to require nothing of men." She is the apple of the eye to her father and mother, respected by her brothers and husband, and feel inspired by her role as a mother to her two sons and one daughter. Those are the fabrics of human life and keep us human. A "feminist" like Jill Filipovic who is blind to those basic human needs and conditions is fake, and becoming a victim of zombie feminism.
16
What an amazingly sad piece that says more about the writer than Ivanka. Why is it that liberals attack any woman who doesn't tow the liberal/feminist party line. Of course Ivanka was born into privilege but she is a successful business woman and mother. She also is clearly one of the two most trusted advisors to the man who built a multi-billion dollar empire and in his first foray into politics successfully became the President of the United States. Funny how I don't remember too many pieces about all the advantage that Hillary had during her climb up the ladder of success. Shame on you.
33
"Oh no! The wibberalz is so mean!!!"
Really? If she wants to promote traditional womanhood (which is the model she essentially lives) then she should have the guts to say so, and the intellectual honesty to defend that choice. To present herself as a feminist is simply lying, and it's "dangerous" (as in the title of the article) because, like everything else Trump, it dilutes and degrades ideas that have taken over 150 years of hard sweat, toil, and suffering to refine.

What this writer does not understand that the importance is choice for the woman today. I have stayed at home with my children when they were young (no regret whatsoever) and built my career after. That was our choice and it worked for us. Some women decide otherwise. Please stop this assumption that every woman wants to be a CEO or heart surgeon.
14
The writer of this prejudiced piece against Ms. Ivanka Trump tries too hard to find fault with her, twisting and bending the simple fact of Ms.Trump's birth into a wealthy family as something that is Ms. Trump's own fault, an offense she should be indicted for. This is ridiculous and pathetic.
Being born to privilege is neither a fundamental flaw nor a chargeable offense on the part of Ms. Trump, who is a working mother of three, a good daughter and wife, and an overall decent person who could have been -- but never was! -- spoiled by privilege.
By invidiously comparing Ms. Trump with other women of less privilege, the author thinks illogically and shows only her own partisan and personal resentment of Ms. Trump.
Pick another target. There are plenty out there more deserving of your condemnation.
oz.

Well shucks. Let's look at her upbringing. She was born not with a silver spoon in her mouth, but a platinum one. She was "raised" by a father who has publicly stated he's "hands-off" with his youngest son and who is widely known in the business world as a bully, and a mother who had been a fashion model until the platinum chariot arrived. I believe every decision of this family for many years has been driven by greed whose thirst is unrequited. Feminist? impossible!
23
Wow, this sounds more like a cat fight than a rational judgment on feminism. Ms. Trump espouses principles of feminism, but her money and power undermines their genuineness? Oh, and no true feminist could possibly choose to be a full time mother? I thought feminism was all about the ability for a woman to make a choice, not about what she chooses. This is absolute hypocrisy!
25
a 'real' feminist is someone like Hillary Clinton, living off a man's reputation while flying all over the planet attending important women's conferences, and paying her women staffers less than the men receive.
25
It's not clear what Ms. Filipovic is railing against. While I think Ivana's defense of her father's misogynist behavior and rhetoric does preclude her from donning the mantle of feminist (at least in any meaningful way), to attack her for coming at her lifestyle from a position of wealth (which seems to be Ms. Filipovic's major problem) is inane. Being wealthy and privileged as Trump's daughter is probably precludes her from really understanding the plight of low- and middle-income women. However, you do not need to be poor or struggling to have problems or to be a feminist.
I don't believe Ms. Trump is a credible feminist. I also don't believe that Ms. Filipovic's opinion piece really makes the case for that argument.

I have identified myself proudly as a feminist for many decades now.
This is a sloppy article full of ill-defined ideas and unsupported conclusions. In addition, the headline incorporates a gratuitous personal insult.
Poor work of this type just sets feminist writers up to be attacked.

Why are we having someone like Ivanka Trump thrust into the face of American consciousness? I resent it and simply don't care about those people and do not welcome their "influence" on American society. There are millions upon millions of normal people from healthy families who should be the centerpiece of discussions on this topic.
36
No one knows who Ivanka Trump is, she is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle behind a mask if imagery, entrenched in a fortress of unimaginable wealth and privilege, her family functions as a monarchy and she is princess number one. To all of the Trump supports who wish to worship at the feet of their king and his court and trash our democracy. good luck.
32
Mr Trump knows business and as a excellent businessman will run this country like a good business. The leaving president Obama was not a good businessman and ran up a #10,000,000,000,000 increase in our national deficit. Ten Trillion! Can you imagine how much one trillion is? And Obama spent over 30,000,000,000 on wars where we weren't attacked, and just the other day spent 3.5 billion to put 87 tanks on Russia's border. A billion here and a billion there and pretty soon your talking about big money. Goodbye Obama.
8
This is a fluff piece. What should be emphasized here is that most women don't have a choice; whether their husbands help at home or not. It's not about feminism when you must work. Ms. Trump provides only mixed messages. If we are going to pay her any attention, she needs to get her act together and find a path that is meaningful and not contradictory.
22
Ivanka Trump's success shows that women can do anything today as long as they are hot. Would a less attractive Ivanka be as celebrated by the Right? I think not. Ivanka's "feminism" is non-threatening because it does not challenge the norms by which women (but not men) are judged. These norms accept female ambition only if packaged in an acceptable form--sexy, feminine, maternal.
45
It's not fair to criticize Ivanka for being under the same pressures as everyone else when it comes to navigating the patriarchy. She has more money but that doesn't make her more powerful than the men in her life.
Also, why criticize her for taking care of her children? Why not just accept that mothers do want to take care of their children and that that is more important to them than professional success at some point? As it should be.

Does anyone out there think that a rich white girl born with a spoon in her mouth has anything to do with the huddled masses? In Hollywood the children of stars usually have a big leg up making it in the acting profession or any profession for that matter. We take that for granted. But it is the reason people read People magazine or watched the cavortings of Fred Astaire in a top hat during the depression with the hope they could escape their circumstances. But the dream is far from the reality. The Trumps are only an extension of this dream, but ordinary people must see that what they actually need to do to survive is far from this dream illusion.
10
The biggest merger and acquisition will be settled Jan. 20 when the Trump Family takes over the executive branch of the United States of America. The Trump 'women' are trophies and eye candy selected by a false prophet to be his child bearers. If Ms. Trump has something independent to say that brings a fresh original outlook to political issues then she still has time to do so. In the meantime, she, like other progeny of the rich and famous, are genetic lottery winners that will die like the rest of us, but, unlike the rest of us, will never be concerned about financial matters to build a retirement investing in kids sports, arts and college funding. I think that most readers would agree that having 1%-class wealth and lots of cash-flow will not guarantee happiness, it certainly goes a long way to provide the basis of a happy life and the rest is up to you.
16
There is a vast difference in what feminism means for a successful woman born into second and third generational wealth and a succession plan to inherit a business empire and, on the flip side, the educated professional working woman who is single or the sole breadwinner for a family and/or is not "sponsored" by a more powerful male in the ranks of the executive hierarchy. Ms. Trump seems to be a highly professional, polished and educated female executive (and by most appearances has a exceptional work ethic), but because there is little chance Ms. Trump could ever fail in her career pursuits (short of wrongdoing) given her wide safety nets, not sure her brand of feminism resonates loudly with many women caught in the fray.

Apologies, but whenever I read the f-word I recall my time in a university where my class followed a women's studies course. I consoled several female students over that year who were in tears having just been berated and degraded in front of the class by their instructor. Apparently, they had no thoughts of their own, were only echoing the brainwashing of the patriarchy, and were told this in the rudest of terms. Not the smartest way to recruit new devotees.
Beware any -ism. It usually has an orthodoxy hidden somewhere, and an intolerance which chastises anyone who questions its authority.

Would Hillary Clinton have reached the heights of success without the name recognition of her husband Bill Clinton? Her famous name got her the top Democratic spot for president and ultimately the nomination but she lost the presidency. Do people mention that it was her husband's being president that helped her achieve the level of success she has seen today. Rarely. Why the hypocracy? It is because Mrs. Clinton is a progressive liberal and Ivana Trump is a conservative? The liberals do not like her because she does not spew their ideology. It is as simple as that.

We simply cannot use the word feminism in connection with Ivanka Trump unless she publicly and unequivocally disavows her father's glaringly misogynistic attitudes towards women. The acceptance of sexual assault, and the acceptance of his cavalier denigration and demeaning of women, is anathema to feminism.
Ivanka cannot be a role model for girls and women in this country, no matter the "successful working mom" spin, without disavowing a man who boasts about grabbing women's genitals. If she does not, she is perpetuating the insidious and sexist message that women must behave in a passively "nice" way, allowing men to do and take what they want, in order for the woman to get what she wants. This results in a quiet soul-tearing humiliation that deprives girls and women from true equality.
Accepting Donald Trump's rank misogyny and his consequent male dominance over women, is the definition of fake feminism.

Here,Here!! Trump's deafening silence after the shocking release of A.H.'s sex tapes where Daddy admitted his delight in engaging in sexual assaults upon women, was a "test" for her to soundly, resolutely condemn such conduct. Not a criticism uttered, or even implied. To associate her with feminism is indeed laughable. Daddy should be on a sex offender registry, not on the cusp of controlling the fate of 350 million Americans. This is beyond surreal.
18
Ivanka's "business" could more accurately be called a hobby.
She works as much as she feels like it, and turns the rest of the job over to assistants and consultants. She licensed her name and turned it over to a partnership that did all the work.
Without seeing the financial statements, we can't even know whether it makes any money. I doubt that it is a significant contribution to the Kushner family income.
As the NYT has explained, Donald Trump and his bankruptcy lawyer have structured many deals in which the partnership transfers money to Trump in exchange for merchandise that sells at inflated prices because of the value of the Trump name. Ivanka's company may be doing the same thing.
Marie Antoinette had a private farm where she used to play milkmaid. She also said, "Let them eat cake."

Wow. What did I just read?
Listen, I can't stand this whole family and I am scared for our country, but this tone-deaf, think piece styled nonsense is seriously unhelpful. This reads like a subtle dig at all "traditional" family units - as if their existence alone is a regression, as if a mom who decides to stay home with her kids is an anachronism - as if kids aren't better off with a stronger relationship with parents. I am all for equal rights and opportunities but most of people you claim to take a stand for here would roll their eyes into the back of their head at this. At some point it isn't about the parents anymore as much as it is about the kids. And it should be that way, and if it's not there should not even be kids.
The problem isn't Ivanka's psuedo-feminism, so much as it's the fact that she feels like she's important enough to broadcast and sell her lifestyle and then other people actually take it seriously, as if she did anything else other than build on a family fortune that neither her nor her dad actually started.

I thought feminism was about women making their own choices in life. Evidently that's not the case. Choosing to have children, choosing to convert to a different religion, choosing to work or not work are now something only liberals are allowed to artbitrate what we women are permitted to do. Isn't that more or less "here's the new boss, same as the old boss?"
I read all the feminist diatribe as a teen when it was in its first printing. It seems today's feminists have lost sight of what the original intent of feminism was. It was about equality in earnings, access to jobs and the ability to make decisions without the assistance or insistence of a male. If any woman makes choices to include her mate in her decisions, that is HER CHOICE. Likewise, if women want true freedom, they shouldn't look to government to create situations for them to achieve, but instead achieve on their own hard work and merit. Modern feminists are an embarrassment. And this writer is no exception.

Donald Trump was born on third base and, after achieving success, believes he hit a home run. Not to diminish the effort thay actually do put in, Ivanka, Eric, and Donald Jr. were all born on home plate and believe that they hit grand slams. We don't yet know how young Baron will turn out. I can't speak to Ivanka's feminist philosophical underpinings, as a man, I am just unqualified to do so, but I don;t think that she has bothered to spend much time reflecting on the nature of the testosterone laced patriarchy she was born into and buys into. She is female mirror of her father, albeit somewhat more reflective and subdued.

I am no Trump apologist, however I find this opinion piece off the mark. Since when is feminism about somebody else (a self-proclaimed feminist columnist) telling us what we should or shouldn't do to be feminists? I would never make the choices Ms Trump Kushner made nor would I or 99.95% of us even have that option. It's fair to point out that she has the wealth to support her choices while others don't, it's fair to point out that with these assets she really doesn't have to make difficult either/or choices. However, I don't think it's fair to criticize her choices as anti-feminist or for making assumptions about her marriage and family arrangements to which the columnist presumably has no first-hand knowledge. Ivanka Trump is not a role model for me, but better to enable and support the ability of women who have to make tough, economically-constrained choices than critique someone who is an inconsequential celebrity for no reason I can fathom.

Fascinating piece that is juxtaposed with the NYT's front page article today on "Women Who Voted to Trump".
Summarizing that article, the women interviewed had mostly impressionistic and superficial reasons for voting for Trump, ones centered on deeply felt personal matters but completely void of any notion of our collective.
As one of them stated: "Trump’s not a perfect man, by any means. He kind of reminds me of my ex-husband." Now if ever there were a great reason to vote for a candidate to assume leadership of the free world, that has to be it.
Several of the women profiled spoke of Ivanka in such glowing terms that I couldn't help but think think that that they subliminally voted for her as one way to identify more closely with wealth, an iconic brand and a beautiful woman.
What a sad commentary on the incapacity of a large swath of our electorate to transcend self-absorption as they perform their civic duty to assess and vote for candidates on the basic merits of their policy positions, character, ethics and leadership abilities.

Ms Filipovic' view of feminism appears to suffer from resentment. Realism, by contrast, takes life as it comes: women have (or have not) kids, not men, economic, cultural, genetic contexts of birth are what they are, not what we would like them to be. And they project promise and warning. That means: We had better assume responsibility in and for our current situation without nostalgia or envy for others, always of course recognizing our interdependence and the effect of our decisions on others now and in the future. Is then the accusation of Ms. Trump Kushner as a "fake" feminist motivated by an unacknowledged motive of hatred of class? Some comments appear to suggest the same. That motive is not helpful. But yes, fight to overcome inequality, promote well-being for men and women, promote good causes everywhere.

Ivanka Trump and Feminism should never be used in the same sentence. Ms. Trump/Kushner and her siblings are clones of dear old Dad, just not as obnoxious, but just as self-centered egotists who have lead such a pampered existence they don't have a clue about compassion, empathy, helping those less fortune, volunteering, joining the military. They are as self-absorbed as their Daddy, someone who has never done anything that does not make him richer or keep his name in the spotlight.
The Trumps could care less about their involvement with Russian prostitutes because they exhibit all the traits and tendencies of high-priced prostitutes themselves. They are no different than the common street-walking guttersnipe slag. They only difference is their price.

The ONLY way a young woman nowdays can balance career and have children, is with lots and lots of money. It is foolish of modern femminism to blthely believe men can share everything equally. Someone in the equation has to earn that income which nowdays takes 200% effort. We now know breast feeding for 12 months is ideal for the health of a baby. This is nearly impossible to do or very very difficult and hold down a typical average income job. Thats why young women get the short end of the equality stick. All women are never going to have equality of sharing the very big load of all the tasks of raising a child. Sure share the diapers and the laundry. Child care that is good quality costs a lot of money in major markets, so much it uses all the mothers income.

Jared Kushner is in the White House to ensure that every possible profit can be made by the Trumps and the Kushners through the power of the Presidency. He is likely behind the Trump tweets for and against major corporations that skillfully manipulate the stock market. Jared is there to be sure Trump and Kushner real estate development companies profit from any infastructure development plans (which will be public private partnerships). Jared Kushner is in the White House to ensure that his family related hedge fund Platimum Partners, being investigated by Brooklyn Federal prosecutors, no longer has to worry about that investigation. There are so many reasons Jared Kushner will be in the White House related to profit. Ivanka having run a clothing business does not qualify her to the same extent for fleecing the American public. She doesn't have enough experience at that. Beyond wearing and dress at a convention and then selling it on-line.

I have a problem when we start deciding someone isn't feminist enough, or isn't practicing the brand of feminism someone else deems relevant. Feminism is about choice - and yes, the privilege of wealth and race gives some people far more choices but that should not negate the path you choose. I don't necessarily see Ivanka Trump as a viable role model as her privilege puts her in an unattainable position for so many, but I have no issue her choice to take on domestic and child-rearing duties. At her status and wealth, she could easily choose not to and she has the right to embrace traditional roles just as others (myself included) do not. I can't imagine that if Ivanka wanted an official white house role that she would have been denied one.
11
Why does the newspaper writer think that we need her to explain any of this?; and why does anyone think American women are studying this trump girl looking for solutions to their own lives? People need to pay attention to their own lives and find their own solutions and victories...and avoid the false world of popular culture. The answers aren't "out there", you have to be the architect of your own life.

@HL "why do we have to attack women as women, as feminists, when we disagree with them?"
Folks saying why can't Ivanka love raising her children, making a lovely home & running her fashion line without being attacked for her choices are missing the point.
She isn't a private citizen any more.
Accept when she became a political surrogate for her obnoxious women-assaulting father in his presidential campaign, claims (against all evidence) "he's not a groper," & that he's a feminist who'll help women - she's opened herself up for criticism. She's a flack for a man who's hostile & contemptuous of women - just ask Megyn Kelly, Rosie O'Donnell, Alicia Machado, Hillary Clinton, the 12 women he sexually assaulted and - Ivana Trump - Ivanka's own mother. Donald Trump humiliated her mother for over a year during their divorce, talking daily to the NYC press to generate headlines about his wife's "fake breasts" & "sexual unattractiveness."
Ivanka's likely to work in the White House, & is publishing a book on how women can 'fulfill' themselves. This speaks to her ambition to be a public figure & a leader.
If you think any right-thinking woman - & daughter - would publicly insist her father's a great guy & feminist after Trump spent a year dragging her mother through a sewer in the NYC tabloids, day after day after day, well, good luck to you. If that jerk was my father, I might have forgiven him by now. But tell people what a stand-up guy & feminist he is? No way!

At first glance, Ivanka Trump, by juggling career and family, sounds like a feminist straight out of the 70s--a woman who has it all.
But then we remember that it was Daddy's wealth that launched her company. And then we remember that she's got a rich, successful, power-hungry New York publisher as a husband, and we're no longer talking about that kind of feminism at all. And then remember the way this woman looks and dresses.
What we really have is a wealthy, beautiful woman who runs a fashion company (we're talking a fashion company, for god's sake, not engineering), who has utterly no experience in government, who's about to leave her fashion company beyond (ha ha) to take up an an advisory role to the President of the United States. With her ridiculously sexy manner of always dressing in Lycra that's two sizes too small for her, a manner that no woman in the real world could emulate without being fired from her job, she stands there at her little press conferences and loudly encourages other women to imitate her.
A bunch of Americans--sadly, women included--star-struck as much by Ms. Trump's beauty and sexiness as they are by her putative business acumen, call this "feminism." Give me a break. It's feminism, all right, but only of the post-modern sort, whereby if you proclaim yourself a feminist, by golly, you are one.
Mary Wollstonecraft is rolling over in her grave.

Of course it needs to be pointed out that Ivanka Trump and other privileged women do not experience the difficulties of the majority of women. Ivanka Trump cherry picks her "causes" and addresses them only on the surface. I feel more concerned about the women who waste time lionizing celebrities like Ivanka Trump and the Kardashians and do not bother to inform themselves of the real issues that affect their lives deeply and ended up voting for Trump and other republicans who are working hard to take away health care for their children.
18
I don't quite understand what the point is that you're trying to make.
She's rich. You want her to pretend she's not?
She's rich. You want her to pretend she's not?

It doesn't worry me much that Ivanka Trump tends to be inconsistent in her interpretations of "feminism" ... women's rights and powers, men's responsibilities in the home. After all, many of us are inconsistent in our ideologies, our behaviors, and she grew with a sexist thug as a father. We can only hope that an army of nannies and her dad's busy travel schedule (he was jetting to a lot of beauty contests in those days, and fighting his own personal Vietnam, trying not to catch an STD) kept him away from her most of the time.
But Ivanka should not be forgiven for standing up alongside this empty, grabby bully, Donald Trump, her Dad, and helping SELL him to the public by casting a warm and sveldt golden blonde glow across the stage.
She's an operator. She likes money. That's fine. Feminists can be operators. But when this rich lady writes a book that features the word "Woman" in the title, or she drags poor Al Gore to Trump Tower, or advocates paid leave for new mothers, she's doing it because she understands the market, and that the the word "woman" and the performance of apparent compassion (for working moms, for Mother Earth) can sell. An image.
She helped legitimize Trump and continues to work that field. I blame her for that.

Don't give up on Ivanka yet. One day the scales may fall from her eyes and show her who her father really is. One day she may pay the heavy price of over-loyalty, vanity, and lack of compassion and understanding for others. Being a spoiled child is a horror to be reckoned with. The enormous pain of realizing your parents gave you every THING except their time and hearts is a hard won truth.
"Thou Shall Not Be Aware" Au contraire Ivanka. Be aware. Be very aware.
"Thou Shall Not Be Aware" Au contraire Ivanka. Be aware. Be very aware.
14
The title of her book should have been "women who inherit."
53
Good grief Jill, Ivanka Trump is a successful woman. Why does she have to fit your feminist criteria to be credible as a role model? Isn't that what feminism is about, having a choice and being respected for it? Does my choice have to be judged as "authentic" by other women to be good? We all do what we think is best for us at the time, within our available resources, and we all live within a matrix of society that comments endlessly on what we are doing, judging us. I appreciate your perspective, though I do not agree she is as flawed as you seem to think. I think Ivanka Trump is a wonderful and authentic role model for young women.
31
This woman being a feminist is a joke, just as her father is a joke. Has she EVER had to deny herself ANYTHING for the greater good of her family..A private school. privilege beyond belief, a company she was GIVEN and we're supposed to believe she identifies with people like me?? She's NEVER supported a family, lived within a strict budget, denied herself anything. How funny is this. Just like her father being labeled "a good Dad" Really?? Do NOT piddle on my leg and try to convince me it's raining... As her "wonderful" Dad would say "Give me a break"
14
My hope with Ivanka is that she, due to the exposure she and her family will have, which is unlike anything else for a "family", will force an epiphany her way, and she will wake up to the reality of her fathers behaviors, and likely of those men like him that she has been birth-forced to travel among.
She is very loyal, like most women in a monarchical family structure. Because their real power is sourced from the monarch. A monarch who only bestows the personal power to his immediate family members in dribbles, but who always keeps his hands in their lives, and around their throats.
Its telling that we've not heard a single peep from the children re; their fathers crass behaviors. Especially Ivanka, re; women. I don't expect that just because of her chromosomal make-up that she has to be all-in with every feminist ideal (whatever they might be) - but its telling that she's 100% silent on the matter. That not one inkling of distaste has leaked from her fathers camp, or her own. Nothing to point to a modern female, with modern beliefs about male-female interactions has been uttered. (Made more suspicious that there's complete empty space surrounding Melania.)
What this tells us is, Daddy their monarch, has excessive control of his children, in all matters of their lives, what they publicly say, what they think and who they are as individuals.
Daddy might be okay with his appointments not being in lock-step, but its clear he demands 100% loyalty from the kids.

I wouldn't expect Donald Trump's children to talk about their father in negative terms, any more than I expected Chelsea Clinton to talk about her father in negative terms.
I'm a fan of letting private heartbreak remain private. These children can discuss their feelings with their mothers......but they don't need to pour their feelings out for the rest of us.

Trump never had child care for his 5 children? I have read that Ivana and he were pretty much absentee parents, so who was caring for the kids? He has a butler, maids, etc. Melania takes her son to school and picks him up. Somehow,I don't think,in between, she is scrubbing floors, cleaning toilets, changing beds, doing laundry, preparing meals, etc. same with Ivanka. I read somewhere that in one of her books she says everyone in America is born with the same opportunities. Hello! There we go with the bootstraps. Trumps father,Fred, gave him millions. My dad forgot to do the same. I don't care what they do with their money. Just don't pretend to be role models.
17
Wow - this editorial and many of the comments are mean spirited. Is there any doubt why the country and Washington are so fractured? People that don't even know Ms. Trump are publicly eviscerating her. Rather than laud the different types of success a woman (or man) can have, this piece denigrates Ms. Trump, as is there is only one measurement of feminism and success.
This type of rampant negativity may get readers (preaching in the echo chamber), but certainly does nothing for rational discourse.

of course you can be a feminist and a mother and a ceo of a corporation. however, is is very difficult to juggle the latter enormous responsibilities without lots of help. i treat women of great wealth. they have nannies, cooks, drivers, private this and private that. and actually....they still complain it is too much for them to handle.
6
Its interesting in many of these comments we expect Ivanka, because she is a woman to uphold women rights, perfectly. Why is there no discussion about the brothers doing the same? Are they even more shallow?
5
What assertiveness? What career success? Her power is derived at best--since her coworkers wouldn't dare speak up and let her know what they're really thinking. She works for her father in the family business and has never held a job outside the Trump empire (just like her siblings). Her work/life balance issues are as real as a DisneyWorld ride.
21
I seriously doubt whether Ivanka worries day to day if people think she is too hot, too cold or somewhere in between. Same with Melania. Life is too short to worry about what other people's opinions are. Life is for living, doing, not contemplating and navel gazing.
13
Im more worried about Feminism's Dangerous Fake Equality.
14
Am amazed at the number of comments. Many very thoughtful and passionate. It has struck a nerve. Mine too. She's a brand promoter plain and simple. Just like her Dad. I don't need her held up as an example of anything. I don't need her to take on an issue either. Unless of course it's gun control or climate change.
18
The only question I have is: what will these "success stories" of the 1% willing to sacrifice of their own personal fortunes so that the other 99% can have what they have from birth?
8
Has she ever worked for anyone besides her daddy?
9
The real story is that even Ivanka Trump has to sit in the back seat and walk behind while she steps away from everything she worked to build.
I am not a fan and I don't buy her brands but as a working mom I have paid $25K/year for child care and the $5K dependent care doesn't even begin to cut it. So if Ivanka can bring policy and tax credits for child care it is a start.
Much more needs to be done. Affordable Daycare and accessible aftercare are the keys for woman to successfully work and support her family and provide for the extras needed to get into and stay into the middle class. My family can afford the tutoring and enrichment and summer programs because I work.

How many nannies, housecleaners, chauffeurs does she have? The next 4 years will find me in the food section.Recently retired, a single Mom for a long time, I don't get the women who voted for him.I hated HRC, but voted for her.Bernie was my choice, but the DNC, and mass media buried him. Let's face it, money and power won.Hope the NYTs interviews these same women in 4 years.I will enjoy my daily walks on the beach with my dogs, and pray that my medicare and social security is not privatized.

By wisely selecting a multimillionaire real estate baron father, Ivanka Trump had the same genius insight as her father.
By smartly marrying the son of a convicted felon father multimillionaire real estate baron, Ivanka showed the dual wisdom of Donald Trump's Scottish mother and her own Czech mother.
Alas there is no real high-achievement for the elder Trump daughter Ivanka. Because the American Revolution kicked the royals and their titles out. Ivanka must settle for being a mere First Daughter instead of Princess.
While Donald Trump must suffer the indignity of merely being President of the United States instead of King. Instead of being addressed as your royal highness majesty, the Donald will only be Mr. President. And God does not save nor care about a President.

"By wisely selecting a multimillionaire real estate baron father, Ivanka Trump had the same genius insight as her father. "
Please explain how you "select" your biological father. I must have been asleep during that class.
With that being said, Ivanka is literally the only member of that family that people seem to like. Donald Trump knew that and used it to his advantage. Is she a feminist icon? No, and she shouldn't be. She has done what a lot of people have done--made her peace with a difficult parent, although very few have to do that so publicly. And she's always leaned more towards a traditional woman's role despite her career--for example, she converted to Orthodox Judaism, her husband's religion, when she got married.

My late mother worked for 28 years as a secretary at Macy's, rising star 5 a.m. to do the laundry and prepare our breakfast and school lunches before embarking on an hour-long subway commute to Herald Square. She had no help - no nanny, no cleaning service, no personal assistant to help her handle the family finances while my father ran a small business. Highly intelligent, she had to leave school during the Depression to help support her family. No rich Daddy to give her a hand, she taught us self-reliance and the importance of education.
My spouse is also self-employed. I obtained the education that my parents had to forgo. Yet, with no real power, I too have had to precariously balance family and professional ambition. I worked for many years for a bully, a man with little respect for women, minorities or anyone other than himself. Like Trump, he allowed his wife to do much of the child raising, treating his adult children - including his daughter well: so long as they toed the line. Clearly, anyone who opposed him in any significant way, immediately became an enemy. To him, people were commodities, easily disposable - projections of his narcissism.
Feminism is what I and my mother did. It's hard, often unrewarding, and fraught with the perils of male privilege & the marketplace. Exploitation, manipulation and subservience to daddies- and rationalization of these as independence -is what women like Ivana Trump do. It is not the world in which most women reside.

I have trouble with the label "fake feminism" because there is such a range of perspectives on what matters for gender equity and how to achieve it. I agree with everyone who has made the obvious point that wealthy women who can afford full-time domestic staff hardly offer a realistic role model for most other women. But as a feminist myself, I am frustrated when those who proclaim to speak for feminists disparage a woman who declares herself a mom first. When I was in my 20s, I thought like that. Now that I have two kids and I'm nearly 50, I am defiantly mom-first. What I do to help my kids flourish is more socially beneficial and significant than anything I do at work, and ten times more personally rewarding. The idea that there is a hierarchy of feminist work, with careers outside the home at the top and family work in the home at the bottom, is misleading. We do need policy reform (paid parental leave), but labeling "fake feminist" any woman who is glad to step away from time in a career to focus on motherhood contributes to the unhealthy work-life balance in our society. Why should that choice be taboo? Why should those of us who are feminist fear we'll be shamed if we confess that we'd love to focus full-time on our kids for a while?
25
@Medeav: good question. I agree with you that trashing other women for the choices they make isn't cool and isn't feminist. But...if you look at the history of women in politics, you can see that there is huge pressure on them to appear more maternal than they may perhaps really be. When Bill Clinton was elected to the White House, Hillary Clinton had been a practicing attorney and long involved in politics. She was prepared to take on serious matters of governing. But the conservative public outcry against her was strong: wives didn't belong in positions of power. It grew even worse when she grew impatient with the criticism and insisted that she was there to do something more than bake cookies. Conservative women took this as a slap in the face. Other women cheered, because what we are seeking are other options besides motherhood. Just as every man doesn't want to be a dad, not every woman wants to be a mom, and we need a culture that doesn't confine women to narrow expectations. In Ivanka's case, we see the only woman in the family who has professional experience being squeezed into the traditional role, while her husband and brothers get the titles, positions, and the opportunities to accumulate more wealth and power. We can debate the relative values of these things, but the fact is that she's being denied the opportunities the other get. Nobody's expecting Jared to stay home. If there's going to be nepotism, why can't Ivanka be in on the power plays, too?

Sounds like a religious zealot declaring someone not a "real Christian".
This article is a good example of how extreme and intolerant the left has become.

I hate to see how extreme and intolerant the left has become, but given what the right says and does, the left being "nice" is bringing a knife to a gunfight.

Ivanka is a fraud from head to toe. She didn't start from scratch building a business -- she started with a famous name, a wealthy father, all of the right schools and connections and the rest of the best that money could buy. She married a another rich person and they have three kids with live-in help to take care of the kids, the house etc. As her father is addicted to twitter and attention, so is she addicted to posting pictures of herself and her kids. You couldn't look at the British paper the Daily Mail online leading up to the election and not see photos of Ivanka and her kids -- not photos taken by papparazi, photos taken by her and posted online. Most sane people don't want photos of their children posted fearing kidnapping but Ivanka courts publicity.
She's not glamorous or beautiful -- she's just a rich girl playing Mommy in public while wheeling and dealing like her pout-faced father and trying to sell the public some junk clothing manufactured in sweatshops in Asia.
Let's not pretend she's a "femininst" or even remotely like the average working mother. The average working mother -- has two jobs, no childcare help, no cleaning lady, no physical trainer, no "stylist", and no rich husband and father taking away all financial concerns for today or for the future.

26
She makes real feminists like me ashamed of this country.
9
Jill. You folks scare me. Here is a woman who has achieved some of the highest rungs in life. She has shown the world that woman can do both profession and motherhood. Then you tear her down because you disagree with her political values. You are burning your own ships!!!
20
Anything she has achieved, she has achieved by selling her name. Whether it's starring on The Apprentice or her fashion lines, she would not have them if she weren't Ivanka Trump. I suppose that's fine, that what celebrities do: advertise themselves for monetary gain. But please don't pretend she got where she is because of her business smarts. She got where she is because of her last name.
9
She'll never be accepted by the litmus test of tortured logic closely embraced by self-identified feminists, will she.
9
The idea that the average working housewife and mother could relate to Ivanka Trump and her life is laughable. I always love it when these super-privileged, super-wealthy women try to become "role models" for American women. Just take a look at the house the Kushners are buying/renting in Kalorama. You'd need an army of servants just to keep that place up. I'm sure Ivanka doesn't stock her own kosher kitchen. I would not want her life -- especially with that leering pervert as a father -- but she can't relate to the American working mother. I stayed at home with my kids despite having an education and I wouldn't trade that time for anything. Men just go to work. Most of them don't feel that fulfilled on the job. A lot of them feel like they don't get two seconds to themselves. At the end of the day, does anyone say, I wish I had spent more time working than with my children?
7
Another person who offers a shallow opinion on a woman who chooses motherhood, is an advocate of child care in our health care system.... where are your morals, are they right now next to the hypocrisy you spew out in your article.... your opinions are empty, your thoughts are shallow and last but not least your summation is outside the realm of reality.
16
I searched the internet to look for Ivanka's charitable donations and support for women's causes in defense of your outrage.
It came up empty.

You can't just call someone's personal brand of feminism "fake" because it differs from yours. And "dangerous?" How? The vitriol with which this piece is written and personal nature of the criticism is very small. Ivanka Trump is not your brand of "elite" and that's precisely what you're unfairly excoriating her for.
26
My bad, Neil. Just because Ms. Trump had millions and millions of dollars in her purse; just because she had a romp through Wharton on her dad's dime; just because she could snap her fingers and there would appear the golden (plated) coach at her feet, doesn't at all mean that she didn't build a world-class, humanity-serving, endlessly taste business from the ground up with her own brains and strong hands.
So ashamed of myself.
So ashamed of myself.
3
Feminism and Ivanka are one in the same- Arrogant Contradictions.
4
So much whining and so little humility. Just live your life as you see fit. Partner with someone that has your values. Don't be envious of the Trumps and their wealth. Who cares? They have their lives and you have yours, and all the hand-wringing about what's right or wrong is irrelevant to you and YOUR family and situation. If you hate your life, change it. Otherwise, stop whining about how others choose to or have the resources to live their's.
19
Michelle Obama made similar choices. There is no template for stamp-of-approval lives for women.
27
If there is a fake feminist, it is Hillary. She has kowtowed to the gulf monarchies, taken a load of their money, and done their bidding in Washington. Worse human and women's rights in rich, developed countries are impossible to find.
22
I'm horrified that this vile piece was published by the New York Times. This is exactly the kind of piece that gives ammunition to the right about liberals.
Women give birth. Women enjoy a special relationship with their children. Women are naturally more empathetic. To deny these realities is the very antithesis of feminism.
Equality will only come when these realities are not only acknowledged, but celebrated and accommodated without punishment.

Let's see how she fares once daddy dies or corruption gets him run out of office, whichever comes first.
11
The title of the book says it all. "Women who Work"...as if it is a choice. For Ivanka, it is a choice, one of her many luxuries...running a fashion label in a tower high above Manhattan like Erica Kane in a soap opera.
For most women, ALL women are women who work, and there's no choice about it-- whether they stay home with the kids, work two or three minimum wage jobs, or climb the corporate ladder.
And if she is really looking to smooth out her father's extremely rough edges, she might consider this for her next title: "Women who are Sexually Harassed".

9
Picky picky picky. Of course Ivanka Trump isn't feminist enough according to the usual liberal feminist creed. This writer insists on strict toeing of feminist lines. Because Ms. Trump's husband has the White House office and not she, Ms. Trump is a faux feminist. No one knows what the feminist future is. I think Ms. Filipovic resists the feminist future because she certainly demands women adhere to the strictures of the feminist past.
7
Ms.Filipov has misused NYT's editorial column to carry on a personal tirade against Ms. Ivanka's Trump. As some presumed authority on "feminism" she sees the world through a gender (in an age of confused gender classifications) polarised lens. There are millions of women who have of their volition chosen to fit marriage, motherhood and profession in generally satisfying lives. In Ms. Filipov's reality her definition of "feminism" is an obligatory initiatory rite of valid womanhood. Just as all African Americans do not need to be liberals, so also not all women need to declare themselves to be "feminists". Let's not denigrate Ms.Trump and other accomplished women who have happily "leaned"on and led fulfilling lives bereft of the anger, frustration and disappointment that reek in the lives of women such as Ms.Filipov. Most women appreciate what has been done legislatively and otherwise in past decades but they also know they can be happily married mothers with professions and do the right thing and not the agenda driven "feminism" .
19
Ivanka is standing - in four inch stilettos- on the back of women's labour. To whit: her nannies, personal assistants, household staff, office staff, the women who manufacture her cheap goods in foreign countries, and the women who sell them in outlets like Marshalls at minimum wage. All while trying to raise families of their own, while Ivanka opines on work/life balance at $500 a ticket coffee chats. I think she's smart, self-serving, and ambitious. Shes probably smarter than her two dumb brute brothers. She's appealingly sleek and glossy. She's cunning. But she's no feminist.
24
I just wonder whether Ivanka Trump giver her own employees generous paid parental leave. Does anyone know?
6
No, she does not. Her personal employees who work for her brand had to fight for it (there is an article somewhere written by a former employee) and those who work for the company that manufactures her fashion lines definitely do not.
7
And having a well-connected, billionaire father couldn't hurt either.
9
What is your problem other than you the fact that you don't like this family? As a Latina I find your comments offensive. Some of us who voted for Trump did see him as a perfect candidate. I saw two very flawed individuals and decided to cast a vote in spite of that fact. However, you and other elites continually paint a false picture and paint with broad strokes. For the record, not everyone who voted for Mr. Trump is white, is a male, and a racist. Both you and the polls got in wrong hence the huge and bitter surprise. I see this young woman as great role model despite the fact that most of us are not in the same socio-economic strata. I view articles such as yours to be decisive , filled with gross assumptions, and attempting to sway readers into agreement with your narrow views.

27
Clearly the reality of your misguided vote is starting to hit home. When Hillary Clinton thinks it is OK to grab men by their privates, openly discriminates against Black people in housing and refuses to pay workers their salaries, we can call Trump/Clinton equivalent.

Do you cosider Beonce and JLo feminists? They do a pretty good job of marketing themselves

The author could have written the same thing about Michelle Obama sacrificing her career for her husband and family.
Reality is that both Ivanka and Michelle deserve enormous credit. Only hyper partisans would slam one and praise the other.

As for the comment about "the 1950s white suburban family", many of us older folks who grew up in that era think there is nothing wrong with "Ozzie and Harriet land" and think our country was a much better place in those begone days.
12
Nobody gets nobody gets maternity leave from Hardee's. maybe she should chat with daddy's secretary of "labor."

It is feminism for Ladies who Lunch.
Isn't that how it started, after all? I'd resist that high horse.

What is obvious to us, if she had defected from her poisonous father, she would be a true superstar. She would be a real hero, but her interests lie as many have written here, in selling with her father's name stamped on it as the staff does all daily duties- dishes, food shopping, & homework. Eagerly await their impeachment and indictments.
11
She sure is pretty though.
6
Can't help but wonder how her father would feel about her if she was plain, maybe stocky and/or had a physical disability. Would he be as proud? No doubt in my mind however that Jared would have passed.

This is just a random thought: Has Ivanka Trump Kushner ever worn trousers?

Women in this country are about to be insulted and their rights assaulted on a scale which will be shocking to all the women who voted for this con man. Let's talk about the very real threat of certain forms of birth control being outlawed.
Talking about whether Ivanka Trump is a feminist is like putting out a fire with a tea kettle.

I share much of your visceral response and excellent articulation, at least vis a vis the Ivanka side show. I would however, split from your contempt and reasoning surrounding "traditionalism." Men are not much different than their mates, given that merely a sliver of them can "make conservative public policy." They too exist in world in which they must contend with the inequalities and challenges you aptly describe. Yet, making the trains run on time is more often than not, a simple division of labor. Why do I get the feeling at the end of your article. much as I did from Gloria Steinem over the years, that you won't be happy until you castrate me? When I am actually one of your greatest allies.
4
There are so many other more important issues than Ivanka Trump's feminism or lack of "feminism" that I begin to wonder if some women have yet realised that their excesses and generalisations ("Hilary will not be manterrupted" etc etc) encouraged a pushback from Middle America, female and male? Defeat should be an opportunity to draw lessons and tone down the extremist feminists.
9
I wonder how many nannies work in Ivanka Trunp's household?
9
God has blessed her for her conversion to Orthodox Jewery. 'Feminism" does not exist in that sphere....
5
Who are you to say it is "fake"?
12
Ivanka wears those silly high heels, and calls herself a feminist?

A Brief history of creepy comments about his own daughter:
When Donald Trump was watching his 16-year-old daughter Ivanka host the 1997 Miss Teen USA pageant, he turned to the then-Miss Universe and asked: “Don’t you think my daughter’s hot? She’s hot, right?”
On The View, 2006
I've said if Ivanka weren't my daughter, perhaps I'd be dating her."
“Isn’t that terrible? How terrible? Is that terrible?”
Howard Stern Show, October 2006
Stern remarks that Ivanka “looks more voluptuous than ever”, and asked if she has received breast implants. Trump engages in the discussion, saying she has not. “She's actually always been very voluptuous,” Trump responds.
Rolling Stone interview, September 2015
Trump: " If I weren't happily married and, ya know, her father . . .’”

The heading of this makes me cringe. The word 'dangerous'. It immediately smacks of bias. Could you write the same of Michelle Obama in embracing the 1st lady role? It feeds into the whole way Donald Trump is portrayed by the media and seeks to smear her with the same taint. "Dangerous" not like us elites. 'Deplorables." I am so sick of the frequency of 'hate' on both sides of politics. How about 'give people a go?' Tolerance, accept her as she is & that her choices are right for her at this point in time etc.
18
Even more instructive than reading Ivanka Trump's "Women who Work" would be to read her 2009 book "The Trump Card" which Jia Tolentino explores in the New Yorker (11/29/16) "Ivanka Trump's Terrible Book Heips Explain the Trump Family Ethos". The anecdotes illustrating the tone deafness of Ms. Trump to the lives of ordinary people and her frequent whining about the handicap of being born on third base could not be more revealing and no doubt more unguarded than her present "brand adjusted " comments -e.g. Ms. Tolentino writes- "She (Ivanka) offers a story about being forced by her mother, to fly coach to the south of France, as the moment she realized she needed to make her own money." Wow, it must have been a terrible shock.
12
I'm not wealthy and I hate flying coach. What's your point? I upgrade when I can - not so hard these days when first class is offered as a $50 add-on.
Wake up and smell the nannies and housekeepers that keep the Trump/Kushner household running. Jared isn't doing the dishes, but neither is Ivanka. They live on a support system that ordinary people can't even imagine in order to spend all that time in public, her as perfectly quaffed as a Stepford Wife.

This article is so wrong and so funny on so many levels I almost don't know where to begin!
Utterly enjoyable for us Deplorables, especially the 53% of white women who voted for Trump.
It helped me get in touch with my inner Internalized Misogyny, oh!
That feels better!
Hillary Clinton lost because she was a nasty lying entitled screaming harpy.
Trump doesn't confuse or intimidate confident, healthy women.
Ivanka Trump enjoys being a woman, a mother, a wife, and a daughter.
Goddam her eyes!
Oh, and being a Jew.
She enjoys that too.
God help the women who read this article and actually take it seriously instead of peeing with laughter!

Ms. Trump has no relationship to to the vast majority of women or men on the planet. She is defnined by the tiny yet very large bubble she inhabits.

I might find some disagreement with the author's take on Ivanka Trump if it was anyone but Trump. Trump is the spawn of America's ultimate snake oil huckster. Ivanka Trump is not about feminism or anything of the like. She is about commerce. She is no Michele Obama.
7
Two things:
1. When you're born on a pile of cash you don't even need to be ambitious. You can roll out of bed one day, decide you want to start a clothing line, and hire a wage laborer to set it all up for you.
2. If women expect men to do more housework, that's a recipe for disappointment. Equality would be easier to find by the wife simply doing less. My relationship got stronger when I let the house go. Now I clean when my husband cleans. The house is messier. Totally worth it.

Come on.
Ivanka is a "working mother" or "successful business woman" like her dad is a real estate genius or compassionate philanthropist. Of course she's a fake feminist just like her dad's a fake president.
Not hard to be "a glowing picture of modern American womanhood" when you have a small army of immigrant nannies, maids, cooks and servants to raise the kids and run a household. Nor is it tough to build a business surrounded by MBA's, accountants, lawyers and consultants. Plus the best bankruptcy experts your dad can spare in case you go belly-up.
And it doesn't hurt to be the declared object of lust your icky dad boasts about on Howard Stern and not your half sister who like Giuliani isn't quite "camera-ready" in Trumpspeak.
No credit for being a billionaire grifter's barbie doll daughter, even if you married Ken, who did an eye for an eye to Christie for sending his dad to prison.
No, don't hate her for being rich and beautiful. Don't hate her because her father is everything that's wrong with the world.
But when millions are drowning because the Trump-like rich have unleashed a tsunami of excess, exploitation, inequality and indifference, and a confederacy of dunces mistook Stockholm Syndrome for I'm-mad-as-hell-and-not-going-to-take-it-anymore, crowning Torquemada Commander-in-Thief (Hillary didn't have a big jet or boy toys like Putin), you'd hope for more than shilling $10,000 bracelets when the Japanese PM visits.
Fad.

Ivanka reminds me of a Stepford wife which is unfair as it is since I don't know her from Eve. Nonetheless, her not-a-hair-or-smile-or-word-out-of-place is unsettlingly unreal. To me, feminism requires being yourself, not the reflection of what you, rather than your Daddy or Hubby, think you should be.
13
Would we even be talking about her if her father wasn't Donald Trump? I don't think so. I don't find anything truly exceptional about her -- there are oodles of women who went to grad school and have a master's degree, maybe even more women than men these days. The single differentiator is her father. And I don't think he's much to be proud of.
9
Yes, expose what's behind that curtain.....‘support of male power wrapped up in a feminist bow.’ And Faux feminists who stick with a gross abuser of women? And the Drumpf is also a supporter of elite money power wrapped in a working class populist bow.
But I was in a clothing store and a young women said she would never buy anything with the Ivanka label. Others standing nearby laughed and agreed. Nothing like the Drumpfs to start conversations among strangers! I’ve experiences several. This would make a good comment thread.

Ivanka is just another Trump. All she cares about is making a buck. This whole working woman thing is a ruse, a gimmick, to "work" the people, like her father. Its all smoke and mirrors -- promote her father and make a buck. Its all very cheap and tawdry. She's no feminist, she's an opportunist.
14
While as liberal as the next NYT reader, this is precisely the sort of feminazi article that gives feminism a bad name. Guess what! We recently learned that a women's brain changes shape during pregnancy with resultant changes that allow for deeper bonding between mother and child. And yet, the fact that women consider themselves primary caregivers to young children continues to draw howls of protest from the feminazis. And by the way 52% of white women voted for for Trump. That might be something you want to address before doing a hatchet job on Ivanka trump. And I say that as a man whose loathing for Donald Trump grows with ever passing day.
11
What bothers me about Ivanka, as it did from the very first time I laid eyes on her, is that she seems like Fake News personified.
4
No surprise given how Ivanka buckled under her husband's family's demands that she convert to Judaism in order to marry Jared, essentially relinquishing her own identity for a man. She seems happy enough so I suppose that's not the worst thing but she is not what I'd call a pillar of feminism.
9
This whole thing reminds me of the Davos Global Economic Forum. All the billionaires and millionaires sit around and talk about the middle class and "how to save them." They like to prescribe remedies for the inequality in the world. Just like Ivanka. She has the prescription for the middle class women. How we should behave, what we should expect, on and on and on....as if she knows best. Give me a break from all of these billionaires and millionaires who know nothing of real life.
7
Ivanka enjoys the many benefits of nepotism, not feminism.
229
Ivanka Trump is to feminism what Donald Trump is to populism.
They are both phonies. They are both plutocrats. They were both born on third base, and think they hit a triple.

Thanks for instructing us that a young woman who wants to be a devoted mother to her children is "dangerous" and a "fake feminist". Tell us again why those who voted for Trump are the crazies in the room.
13
High Achieving? Rich parents( and grandparents); an established infrastructure and business association via nothing more than name recognition. Highly Placed? Yes. Highly Achieved? No.
10
The real feminist in the 2016 campaign: Michelle Obama.
13
I'd be very surprised if Ivanka or Jerad did the dishes or matter any other household chore.
2
I really love it when women who have privilege attempt to instruct women who are struggling what they should do with their lives. Wake up, you are rich, we are not..get a life.
7
After her traitor father takes the oath of office, Ivanka Trump can accessorize herself with a whole new label. Something exotic, like Mata Hari.
5
Ivanka's professional success, just like her brothers, can be attributed to being born Trumps. So, rather than labeling her a post-feminist huckster -- I'd say she's just a plain old huckster.
9
I'm an old feminist, I can't stand Trump, and I think this is an unfair attack. Ivanka Trump is under no obligation to embody feminism as you narrowly define it.
16
Only to underscore several excellent comments here that point out Ms. Trump - Kushner really comes across as Daddy's Little Mannequin. A different time in history and I have little doubt that she would have been a commodity to sell via arranged marriage, for the good of the Kingdom of Trump. That she can balance motherhood and being a mannequin, in 2017, hardly rates her as special. I am very familiar with women who raise kids, balance two or three jobs, and can speak eloquently about why Ms. Trump's father is a horrible person to be President.
7
Balancing a child on one hip? Really? How about waving at the nanny and retiring to "work on herself" whether that's the gym or make up or buying clothes.
Pretty UN-feminist, I'd say.
Pretty UN-feminist, I'd say.
4
This is a joke, right? Since when has this overprivileged "Daddy's Girl", who has married into more money, and never had to fight a day in her life for anything substantial, let alone work, ever been a feminist? -- or even represent feminism??
Don't believe the hype.
Don't believe the hype.

You would have served well as a member of Stalin's staff. Go back and read the writings of the time. Find out what happened to Soviet families when they tried the communist approach. Look at what has happened to African American families.
Your bitterness, animosity, and hatred is palpable in your words.

Whether it's fake feminism, fake jewelry or fake news just add the name of Ivanka, Donny Jr., Eric, Jared, or the master of schlock, Big Daddy, to it. Trump thinks he's kids and his wives are the epitome of culture and class. That just goes to show you how far we have devolved as a society. I guess when the Kardashians become roles models by persons who wish to emulate them we are fast approaching rock bottom. With Trump in the Oval Office we will have arrived.

Ms Trump has as little idea what it's like to be a poor white woman as most mainstream American feminists have what it's like to be black.
3
What a gratuitous hatchet job about a talented, accomplished woman. Jill, you must be very proud of this piece. Why do I not surmise that your next hit piece will be about Chelsea Clinton?
12
This article seems to be reaching, it is not a fault to be prosperous.
That being said, Ivanka never denounced all of the despicable ,racist, sexist, banter that her Father has spewed in the past year. This places her in the same camp as the President Elect. One which New Yorkers and Patriots find reprehensible, backwards, and undignified.

Unbelievable article in terms of "no win" for women. Who is this magical women that Ms. Filipovic describes as HER vision of a feminist? Talk about wanting Stepford wives. The author wants caricatures. Women...oh, yes, and men too...are multi-faceted. This article symbolizes the thinking causing many women, including myself, to reject current 'feminists.' And by the way, I run a business I started, take no money from anyone, and raised five successful children, wear heels (not as high as when younger), great clothes, and hire helpers as I can. I encourage women to do what they choose within the constraints of what they must do to survive and thrive. Sick of and at the NYTimes. Smug condescension, single-faceted analysts and old stereotypes seems to dominate its articles.
11
I highly doubt she lifts aging to care for her kids in a traditional sense. Maids and nannies 24/7.
2
High achieving? Achievement means working hard and doing something more than copying protected designs. Just like her dad, handed millions.
6
She presents herself quite well. So do many other women with out nearly the advantages that I would assume are available to her. But the truth is that she works for her father. As far as I know that is the only real job she has held. Is that the same as going out into the world and establishing oneself independently. I don't think so. Do not conflate nepotism with a self made person. My problem with Ivanka is that I believe her loyalty to her father, perhaps admirable, is ill-conceived and misguided. His type of pathology does not exist in isolation. He has many enablers. My suspicions tell me those closest to him are his biggest enablers. He demonstrates so many characteristics of a man who has very little respect for women. Yet, she defends him at every level. Maybe we do not know what goes on behind closed doors, but if what is visible and public is any indication, my opinion is she is not as admirable as some believe. Or she is at her core fearful of him.. I read a post from a man who lived on the same floor as Donald Trump Jr at U Penn. He related an incident where DJT came to pick up his son at the dormitory of Penn. Don Jr. answered the door in casual clothing. This young man claims that DJT struck his son in the face, knocking him to the ground, telling him to put a suit on and meet him in the lobby. Scary stuff but oh so telling. It explains much.

"Instead, she’s a kind of post-feminist huckster, selling us traditional femininity and support of male power wrapped up in a feminist bow."
This is hardly unique to Ivanka Trump. Beyonce, who feminists have used as an icon for the past decade, has a video where she's mouthing "eat the cake Anna Mae" behind her husband while he says it.
There either needs to be a better defined version of "feminism" or we should drop it altogether.

Feminism is not a checklist of to do's.
It is a range of political ideologies that are rooted in defining, establishing, and achieving equal rights for women in areas like education, employment, and health care.
Ivanka Trump is not a feminist...she's a socialite who has had ever single thing handed to her by her very inappropriate father.
Maternity Leave? For women only? That's not feminism. That's sexism. And a checklist item to boot.
And paid by savings from squeezing out welfare fraud? Tell me Mr. Trump, to execute that program, you'd need employees to administer it. Since you're all about eliminating federal jobs, that's going to be um impossible don't you think?
P.S. Am I the only one creeped out about Ivanka being elevated into the pseudo First Lady role?

12
What happens when feminists are so caught up in pseudo-equality, that they neglect and abuse their children? They raise boys who go on to become like Donald Trump.
5
Telling people how to achieve success (and making money off it) when you haven't actually had to do the hard work yourself is so arrogantly insensitive. More so when you don't need the money. Trump University, anyone?
6
let's face it,neither one of the Kushner-Trumps are doing dishes or any other household task.
2
Interesting that neither Ivanka nor Trump have "hung-out" a single day in their lives with anyone like these bigoted, racist, uneducated, economic victim white outsiders who supported Trump's every word and whose votes they so actively courted and got!
9
This opinion piece is just another example of the cultural left intelligentsia assuming that it gets to decide who is and isn't a 'feminist,' based on absurd (who cares who does the dishes in Ivanka's house) and contradictory criteria. Does Chelsea Clinton's husband 'lean in' on the dishes? Who knows? Who cares? But the Left would never ask this question of Chelsea Clinton because she is in the 'correct' political party and from the 'correct' political family. And let's not forget that Hillary Clinton actually campaigned back in the day as the "two for one" prize of a Clinton Administration, though putting her in charge of health policy when no one had actually elected her never seemed to raise all these righteous concerns about nepotism. This is selective outrage that tells us nothing important about Ivanka Trump but just advances a tired and outdated partisan narrative.
19
So much for the email I received after the election, telling me the NY Times would try to do better. The word "try" was the key that nothing would change, because if the Times wanted to change, they would. They would not need to "try."
Trump won. Next week, he will take the oath of office. The continued attack isn't going to change it. And, frankly, there are other places to get news that aren't full of hate. Places where hate doesn't obscure the real news.
I'm not saying ignore him. But, report his actions with sincerity, honesty, and integrity, characteristics that are absent in most NYTimes reporting because people on both sides want the truth. The Puzzle section shouldn't be the only section people can trust.

Like her father, Ivanka is a huckster selling her brand on every occasion. Coffee with the highest bidder, buy the dress she wore at the Republican Convention, buy the bracelet she wore at her meeting with whomever. She is the apple of her daddy's eye, and the apple does not fall from the Trump tree.
15
What? Going after the President-elect's daughter for fake feminism? What is the point? I think NYT needs to take a look at their priorities. Is the NYT the feminist police now? My wife has a graduate degree, works full-time, raises two kids, we have two strong incomes, does she qualify? We are not billionaires or millionaires, far from it (well, we do have assets that come from a lifetime of frugality and good decisions), much like a lot of people. Sometimes my wife does stuff for the sake of appearances and she does stuff that she believes in. She will stand her ground in an argument. We argue about women's rights and education, the economy and business, all manner of things. We vote democrat. So is my wife a fake or a real feminist?
Move away from this claptrap NYT. There is so much more to focus on now.

If Ivanka were to don a burka and spend time with family and kids, helping and nurturing them, then the feminists will have no problem and will Ivanka a great feminist. But then no burka or hijab and the issue is reversed. liberals need to be consistent atleast.
5
What does Ms. Trump know about the realities of working women? She never had to hustle for a job - she moved right into a high paying, prestigious position at her father's company right out of college. She has never had to struggle with paying for childcare while she works one or more jobs, deal with sick kids on her own, do the grocery shopping, cook, clean, etc. all the while worrying about paying rent/mortgage, medical bills - the list goes on and on.
I believe she is very likely a devoted mother and her husband also seems to cherish his family. But for her to pretend that she can relate to the majority of working women who are not born into riches - it doesn't ring true.
Slightly off topic: but the fact that Ivanka's and all the Trump products are made in foreign countries is the ultimate hypocrisy.

8
Attacks on a president's wife and family are anathema.
6
Ivanka Trump does give sympathetic lip service to working women and mothers, but I have seen nothing to suggest she aspires to be a feminist leader in the manner advocated by the writer. And if this is so, hasn't the writer set up a -- (unfortunate term) -- straw man? I seriously doubt that any woman who shares the writer's concerns about women's rights looks to Ivanka Trump for help or inspiration.
4
With respect to their obvious dynastic ambitions, the Trumps will likely be our functional equivalent to the Russian Imperial Romanov family.
5
"Functional equivalent" to the Romanov family? You do realize how that ended for the Czar, his wife and children along with his brother, uncles, sister-in-law, etc?
The image of someone like Ivanka Trump is exactly why so many women are depressed these days. It is impossible to stay beautiful, be incredibly successful, take care of three children, all while fawning over your husband and let him assume the role of the super achiever. Not unless of course your daddy pays for child care and private tutoring (for you and your kids), puts you in as CEO of the company and forces everyone to listen to what you have to say. What is expected of women today is ridiculous and putting someone like Ivanka up as a role model is just crazy making for most women.
15
Ivanka is far less in the public eye than publicity hogs like the Kardashians or Miley Cyrus.
I do not believe in Ivanka. I do not believe in Trump.
6
Oh, please. It's superficial stories such as this one that The New York Times has wasted its resources on instead of the investigative reports the public needed to know before November 8.
And regardless of the names, please write more about ordinary people, not just rich people who live high-achieving lives because they can afford to hire people to do the time consuming grunt work life demands. The media praised Angelina Jolie for being a wonderful mother of six children. She also had six nannies -- one for each child.

I wonder when the same sharp lens will be focused on Michelle Obama? Seems that credit should be given, not fault found, for both.
7
NY Times.. you can't cut the Trumps a break, can you. You got hammered when he was elected, and now each day, headlines are 'let's beat on the Trumps". They havent even been in office yet. Perhaps Donald will be the best President we had in years but from your paper, its not possible to know that.
You know what, you are a bunch of sore losers. Now that, is not American.

I'm with you. Somebody needs to shout that from the rooftops.
BTW, didn't Ivanka fly coach when she was harassed by a cowardly paragon of LGBT victimhood. When was the last time Meryl Streep flew coach?
8
Who cares?
1
Everything about her seems fake. It goes way beyond fake feminism.
6
What I have read and observed tells me that she is just like her dad, all about money and power, not much empathy and not much else under the guarded and manicured exterior. Her brand of "bubblegum feminism" is just that- a brand, anything that she can sell. Difference is that she has learned how to finesse the package and her dad of course never will. He's dangerous for a laundry list of reasons, but don't be fooled- she is not his voice of reason, rather she is his number one enabler. She reminds me of women the likes of Asma Assad who is poised and manicured in interviews and speaks of her wonderful husband's love for the Syrian people and how he is taking care of the them and improving their lives. Like salt in a wound they stick it too you with a smile and good face work and in Ivanka's case in a stylish dress that happens to be for sale.
3
I don't see any mention here of Ivanka's conversion to Orthodox Judaism. I know from first hand experience that feminism cannot and does not exist in Orthodox Judaism. It seems as though their elitism has bought them, Ivanka and her husband, a new brand of watered down orthodox judaism. At any rate it's all a sham and these next four years are sure to be stomach turning.
4
First fake news, and now fake feminism?
Remember when Gloria Steinem and Madeleine Albright said that women who didn't vote for Hillary Clinton belonged in a special place in Hell?
Telling women to vote for women just because they are women is true sexism, in my book.
But you can call it fake feminism if you prefer.

Yeah, yeah, yeah! Ivanka, is a chip off the old shoulder. She had the audacity to wear a $10,000 bracelet promoting her own brand on that lame 60 min interview right after the election--shame on her, for her lack of modesty in front of the whole country, who is not like her. And for thinking that business and government go together. She and her father may not at heart be bad people, they just have a skewered vision. I am always happy if a woman can work and be a mother, and, if a father can. For parenthood, there are no conflicts nor fakes. If the health care system and the social structure were right, more balanced,we would not have to have this conversation. Somehow, some of the still to arrive, but on their powere that be oppose systems that make life easier for all. Look at Scandinavia--hey, if you don't want it, create a private, parallelt one and leave it at that? What is the matter with Americans? I think they need basic civics and economics course and need to stop whining!!
1
Funny you didn't write a diatribe about Chelsea Clinton all this time - the person who goes around claiming money doesn't matter to her but who was paid enormous sums of money as a total novice in all her various work stints, raided the Clinton Foundation for her wedding expenses, lives in a $10m apartment, and swans around the world with all expenses paid for by the Foundation. No articles about HER "dangerous fake feminism"? Bias much?
12
If I had all the help Ivanka has, I'd be floating on air. You should have mentioned that factor in this article--Ivanka's life is nothing like most women's lives. Most women are juggling everything all at once and praying that nothing falls.
4
Do you really believe that Ivanka and Jared do any of the things that normal American parents do? I highly doubt it. I'd put money on the likelihood that their relationship with their children consists of being presented with washed and fed children by their nannies for a brief visit with mom and dad before dinner. As for the cleaning and laundry and cooking it really doesn't matter if mom is a working mom or a stay at home mom when you are a billionaire: you don't do any of those things. And many of the rest of us would hire those things out most of the time if we had the money too.
4
Since we're judging whether people are feminists - is a female politician who receives many $millions in campaign contributions from large banks, which break consumer protection laws and disproportionately foreclose on lower and middle income women, really a feminist? Is that a brand of feminism to which you think women should aspire?
11
I'm not sure I understand the vitriol in this article against Ivanka Trump. She can't exactly help the fact that Donald Trump is her father. What would you have her do - disown him? Change her name and move into a homeless shelter? She has stated many times that she is not a Republican - but is an Independent. She has even donated to Democrats - $24,500 to the DCCC and $7,500 to the DSCC (according to Open Secrets). So part of the premise this article that she is conservative is wrong.
Who has the right to define what feminism is, and why is she a "fake feminist"? Most of the article is a rant about how lucky Ivanka Trump is growing up wealthy. Is it required that feminists be poor?

Somehow the Republicans who are still Americans and patriots......somehow.....they must get rid of this horror show that is moving into our White House.

"Women Who Work." The title cracks me up. Ivanka Trump doesn't have to work, which makes her relationship with work different from most of us who have to work, and she also had the means to start her own company, meaning she can call the shots, something most of us cannot. I haven't read her book, but it sounds kinda like the articles for sale on Gwyneth Paltrow's website....aspirational!
Ivanka reminds me of another very wealthy, famous woman. An acquaintance of mine works for this person's household. In a magazine article, this woman referred to herself as someone who was a working mom, no different from the rest of us! However, she didn't reveal was that she also had 6 nannies!!!

If you are rich enough to employ servants, you can do anything you want.
Ivanka has no business offering advice to working mothers.
Her contribution is harmful and makes ordinary women feel unecessarily worse.

8
If being rich enough to employ servants is the standard by which to negate a woman's opinion on working mothers then I suppose that should shut up liberal icons like Chelsea and Hillary, Michele Obama, Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie, anyone else in the Hollywood/media elite, Sheryl Sandberg, etc. etc. Please let those women know that they do not speak for you because their unbelievable wealth and privilege surely make ordinary women feel worse about their pathetic selves. In case you couldn't tell, the latter was said sarcastically because it is so obvious that none of this is about wealthy women having no place talking women's issues. It's all about liberal outrage at wealthy conservative women talking about women's issues. We can't have that, can we?
8
Like everything else with this family, her pronouncements are a facade and a hollow one at that.
This is a woman born into gold leaf. She and her husband can easily plunk down $5 million for a house in the "right" Washington neighborhood. And you know there is at least one full time nanny, plus other household help.
I wonder if her name wasn't Trump, would she even have a job?

Why do so called "feminist" writers always sound so bitter, unfulfilled, illiberal, shrill, angry, envious, uptight, lonely, prudish, narrow minded, uncreative, judgmental and project low self esteem? Ms. Filopovic has taken way too many words to describe the classic high school situation where girls like her hate the "popular" girls who look like they have it all. Sad.
8
Geez seriously. These are far from people I admire, but in what way is Clinton Inc. any different? OK, I'll grant you, Chelsea did look awfully embarrassed while lying about Bernie's healthcare program on the stump for Ma. But these girls run in the same set, have enjoyed comparable privilege and would be nowhere without their last names. And each, funny to say, married guys whose dads went to jail.
In what way do they differ?
In what way do they differ?
7
Married rich guys whose Dads went to jail.
I think the former was the more important factor.
They differ not one whit. They were born to everything and accomplished nothing on their own, twin sisters of different parents.

Dear Ms. Filipovic,
Who are you to declare that Ivanka Trump is a "fake" feminist. To judge the way another woman leads her life is anti-feminist?
Who are you to tell anyone what constitutes feminism? This piece of journalism doesn't belong in the NYTimes. It's insulting, inflammatory, and shallow. Ms. Filipovoc, you are merely playing with words, and there's no substance to this piece.
If you're going to be so rude as to call another woman a "fake", you had better back that up with substance, because the only "fake" in this piece is the journalist you wrote it.

Yeah, liberals prefer single mothers with a half dozen kids and dependent on social services.

This is the perfect example of a Liberal Elite!!
Liberal Elites think they know best and feel entitled to dictate to everyone else !!

Funny I feel like the "Heartland" does that.

Ivanka Trump's sin is not that she's successful, happily married, and in a position of power. Her sin (according to this opinion writer and other "feminists" is that she's the daughter of Donald Trump. For shame! It's her Original Sin.
5
I didn't vote for Donald Trump and don't feel he represents me. That, I can complain about.
However, this article about his daughter is just plain mean, even as an opinion piece. We all negotiate the balance of identity, family and parenthood in different manners. You can fault Ms. Trump for attempting to sell her jewelry inappropriately on 60 Minutes, but you viciously dig too deep in criticizing every breath she takes as a woman. Considering her family background, she exhibits considerable grace. The shame is on the author.

"The high-achieving elder daughter.....who built a business that bears her name."
I mean no disrespect to Ivanka Trump by this comment: How much of her success is built on the Trump 'brand' rather than the merits of the items put out under her name? Not all Trump-branded goodies sell well, but would any of those that sell well be doing so if her name was Morales or Kaplan or Thompson or Chang?
And if the items are selling because of the Trump name, that's fine too. But let's not be under any misapprehensions here.

I get the revulsion. How could any feminist, even the candidate's daughter, vote for Mr. Trump? But this is gatekeeping at its finest. No true feminist would what, allow her husband to be successful when she already is? She being surrounded by successful men does not detract from her competence and success and neither does being a team player, if you could call caring about ones family such. It's like the author thinks feminism means anti- anything feminine for women. The gatekeeping is 1. are you a woman that acts like a man or 2. are you a man that acts like a woman? I just don't get this outrage. It's completely antagonistic and unnecessarily difficult. Don't we want to create good lives for ourselves? That's what she has done, granted starting with points on the board. I guess her life is too nice to be one of a TRUE feminist.
I'd be more than ready to accept Trump's79 daughter as a beacon for women and families. But clearly, she's out for herself and her brand. I readily acknowledge she's brighter than her clueless father but she continues to support his Neanderthal thinking. I'm sickened by both Ivanka and her even more rapacious husband.
4
How about responsible news outlets not using the word "fake" in headlines? It is a classic example of poisoning the well and it works both ways, e.g., "Meryl Streep's Fake Self-Victimization."
5
Be careful how you judge Ivanka -- you might be looking at our first woman president.
Seeing how many in these comments detest her, she might yet show us all, how a woman can overcome these odds to become our president.

This article doesn't describe Ivanka Trump's feminism, just says that it is "dangerous." And "feminism" really ought to have been defined at the outset. It's a term that has a lot of weight and can mean many things to different people.
Yup. Tear each other down. Must be the result of some ancient genetic coding designed to compete for the best mate. Ivanka Trump isn't telling anyone what to do or judging anyone for their family choices. She knows how privileged she is. Who do you think benefits most from her pushing for paid maternity leave for every woman? Not her, not the 1%. You.

"Ms. Trump has written a book called “Women Who Work,” so must presumably think she has advice to offer other women."
Ivanka Trump no more wrote a book than Donald Trump did.
She had a book written under her name, to be sure, but that's not the same thing, and it never ceases to amaze me that commentators don't point this out as a matter of course.
My brother is a ghost writer, and he has relayed to me the story that is a staple in his profession.
When the ghoster first meet the ghostee, the ghostee says:
"I can't wait to see how your book turns out."
As the ghoster begins to dig in the ghostee says:
"Gee, our book is moving along nicely."
And when it's finished, the ghostee turns to everybody and says:
"How do you like my book?!"
Don't even give a smidge of credit where credit is not due, especially to congenital fakistas.

So, Jill, she's smart, attractive, wealthy and dedicated to both her career and her family. No wonder the feminists can't stand her.

Ivanka made no public comment about the rude tape with her
Dad talking about grabbing women. She sets a horrible example for all women. Did you see her in "Born Rich?" She had a breast enlargement, facial surgery and dyes her dark brown hair to look like a total phony. Between her and Melania, it is like an advertisement for Barbie dolls. It looked like men with bimbos up on stage.
She converted to her husband's religion, and after the Donald said he would want to date her, she takes over the role and office of the First Lady? It is creepy. I do not believe Melania and Donald could not afford tutors for their son to move to DC.
What was she doing on vacation with Putin's girlfriend this past summer?
Fake Feminism indeed

She is primarily, moreover, the poor cover-up for DJT's open-faced sexism, the poster-child for his preservation of "family values" that conceals not only his boorishness but retrograde conservative ideals.
2
What about the fake face and fake boobs that go along with everything else about her that's fake? She's positively gag-inducing.
4
How did this comment that is about as mean girl as it gets, completely focused on appearance shaming, get published by the NYT? What is positively gag inducing to me is the double standard about what the left can get away with saying vs what the right can get away with saying. I guarantee you that no comments solely aimed at slamming the appearance of iconic liberal women make it past the NYT censors.
1
The author has little chance of ever achieving the kind of success that Ivanka has and is bitter about it and self loathing. Envy is very petty.
6
The key word in this article is HUCKSTER. How anyone could buy into her "narrative" of her own life is beyond me. The author of TrumpNation was sued for libel by the Don and had access to the books. He found the vast empire to be neither vast nor an empire. I always suspected his daughter converted to marry into a real empire, not one built on smoke and mirrors.
5
This shoud be a dream to be the daughter of the incoming President but I'm guessing it's closer to a nightmare given it is Donald Trump. What an utter embarassment he is and now we, the USA. So sad.
1
How many times has Ivanka Trump cleaned teh bathrooms in her apartment? How many times has her husband Jared kushner scrubbed the bathtub and the toilet bowl? They have help for everything everyday. Ms. Trump can claim she is advocating for working women. But she has no clue of the stuggles of most of the American women. To top it all, she has not uttered one word about the deratgatory words spoken by her father about women. She is no feminist by any stretch of imagination. She has no integrity.
3
This is the requirement to be a feminist? Clean your own bathroom? People have gone completely nuts. Does anyone think Michele Obama has done a lot of that? Or Sheryl Sandberg - or Hillary, not to mention Chelsea. As usual women continue to point fingers and tear each other down. Nothing new here, only difference is that now it is politically correct and socially acceptable because it's aimed at Ivanka Trump. For the record I am a successful physician, mother of 4 and I pay someone else very well to clean my bathrooms. Did I lose my feminist card?
5
2 points. (1) What does Ms. Trump know about struggling american women? (2) Does she even care that her father who supports her fatehr who has no regard for women and insults them and speaks so disrespectfully of women?
My husband works hard. Born poor. We have 2 homes and cleaning help. Please don't judge me, harshly. These earned perks do not make me a spoiled, insensitive person who is out of touch with less fortunate sisters. I volunteer 5 days a week to tutor ESL and drive 30 minutes each way to do that. Money doesn't mean bad. It is how one uses it that tells the story.
14
You drive 30 minutes (each way!) to a volunteer job! Well, you surely deserve a medal.

i'm guessing we haven't seen chelsea clinton riding in coach

13
The writing in this article is hard to understand. The point came across but I personally found the quality of writing hard to comprehend.
4
This article doesn't include the fact that Ivanka also changed her religion to suit her husband and his family. His father, a convicted criminal, paid for his son to go to Harvard and yet the son is reaping far more benefits from the Trump-Kushner merger.
I guess, in a twisted way, she is just grateful to have a husband and be "respected" by her families. Her brothers run the family business and she divests in her own. Her husband has the official White House position (even as a "volunteer") and she gets to smile, do all the hostessing that Melania will not do, and be both unpaid and unrecognized.

1
Oh, wow! Let's bash Ivanka for being smart, beautiful, successful in marriage and career... in short, for having it all! But let's not admit the reason we're really sniping at her is because she isn't a liberal! That ipso facto makes her a FAKE feminist, unlike, say, Hillary Clinton, who played a high-profile policy-making role in her husband's Presidency without eliciting any complaints from left-wing feminists that it posed “serious ethical and legal issues”.
11
Ivanka would be just another sorta pretty face and not that fabulous if she wasn't raised as an extremely wealthy person with those same perks. Think she'd be so thin, rich and utterly out of touch of she's been born Irene on Staten Island? Money buys a lot of goods and praising someone who started life on 3rd base and wouldn't know a toilet brush from a loofah isn't saying much...
1
I wake up every morning to the latest news of a tweet or twist by some Trump and I think (outloud to anyone within listening range) 'who are these people? where did they come from?
7
Not a fan of her father, but you lost my waning interest with "post-feminist salve in the neotraditional marriage model." Wowzers. Perhaps you wouldn't have to call her labels fake if you didn't take so much time to label her in the first place?
7
come on! the women can afford as much household help as she wants! this is not the typical woman who works! when if ever do you think she's cleaned her own toilets and scubbed her own floors!
2
I'd like to know where the evidence is that "educated women fare better romantically than they used to." To me, "Because they divorce less often" is hardly the same thing.
1
Let's start calling them like they are - Lying Donald, Crooked Ivanka, Grifter Jared, and the Low Energy Twins, Don Jr and Eric.
7
Oh, she isn't worth taking nearly this seriously, anything she says or does. Anyone who is fooled by her act is too stupid to have any sympathy for, male or female.
Of course I feel that way about her father too, but apparently a lot of Americans feel differently.

Still waiting to read a published book about working women who HAVE to work (and manage childcare, household duties, 2nd shift, work/life balance, etc) as opposed to those who CHOOSE to work or stay home.
For most people, it isn't a "choice."
These pieces about modern feminism are barking up the wrong tree.

1
Carrie--- Exactly! I may be what one would call a "high powered business woman" but I became one out of necessity not to be "fulfilled".
She gives me the creeps, along with the rest of the family and hangers on. Phoney as all get out.
5
Are you kidding me? How does her profile differ from that of, say, Sheryl Sandberg or Marissa Meyers? Not much. These protests are silly: it is a matter of wealthy, powerful and even "legacy" women now emerging in the US. And it's not a new-order history.
5
It's pieces like this that drove a whole generation away from calling themselves feminists. There are lots of reasons to take issue with the incoming first family, and Ms. Trump in particular, but picking a fight about fake feminism misses the point. Neither she nor her husband have earned the power they are about to wield. If Kushner was staying home with the kids and she was in the West Wing it would just be a different kind of crooked. I suppose the next op-ed will be about why Ms. Trump is willing to move her children to Washington post haste while Mrs. Trump is not. Focus on the real issues, NYT, there are so many of them that need your attention.
7
Ivanka is a woman who has blind ambition alongside her husband. It has nothing to do with values of equality; otherwise she would have disavowed herself from her father's campaign long ago and we wouldn't see her husband taking a post in the White House.
6
Who cares. I am increasingly aware of the disproportionate attention that the NYT dedicates to gender and race issues. These are no doubt important, but they seem to occupy far too much space in your pages at a time when there is so much more happening in the world that merits careful analysis and reporting.
6
Grown females outnumber grown males in this world. If you think paying attention to the inequalities that we suffer every day of our lives is without merit, then you are hopelessly ignorant.
Now go talk to someone about his or her race "issues," mp. Hear what they think about your silly comment.

And it doesn't hurt to be the declared object of lust your icky dad boasts about and not your half sister who your dad avoids being pictured with (like Giuliani, not quite "camera-ready" in Trumpspeak).
No credit for being a billionaire sex addict's barbie doll, even if you married Ken, who did an eye for an eye to Christie for sending his dad to prison.
No, don't hate her for being rich and beautiful. Don't hate her because her father is everything that's wrong with the world.
But in a world where millions are drowning because the rich have unleashed a tsunami of excess, exploitation, inequality and indifference, and a confederacy of dunces mistook Stockholm Syndrome for I'm-mad-as-hell-and-I'm-not-going-to-take-it-anymore and crowned Torquemada Commander-in-Thief (Hillary didn't have a big jet or boy toys like Putin), you'd hope for more than shilling $10,000 bracelets when the Japanese PM visits.
Fad.

Yeah, "being a mother will always be my favorite"
Those statements always make me laugh, specially coming from women who think they do it all... with the help of a nanny. a housekeeper, a cook, a personal assistant, chauffeur...
Of course she can do it all... Because she has it all...

The "First Enabler" is as counterfeit as her old man. Hardly a role model.
3
I'm guessing (and hoping) that Ivanka will not be living in Washington for very long.
1
Nobody should doubt for a second that she is not her father's daughter. She is so like him in so many ways (discarding her look of course). It is easy to be deceived by a pretty face. But do not be misled.
3
Calling a successful woman who has chosen to take care of her children and who is "subordinate" to her father who is the PRESIDENT ELECT (I am technically subordinate to him, too, you know) "dangerous" is utterly ridiculous. This kind of talk just pushes people away from feminism.
10
Ivanka Trump will now realize what politically conservative women have known for decades: if you're not towing the leftist identity politics line in all respects, then you are not only not a feminist; you are the enemy of feminists. No matter that rich, preachy, entitled, highly staffed, highly privileged women abound on the left, they are in the club and get a pass from this sort of critique. Mean girls never disappear, they just grow up and write exclusionary columns for the NYT and the like.
12
This is the new normal. While the GOP decried all of Secy Clinton's speaking fees, they are failing in their task to hold this incoming PEOTUS nepotism. Perhaps they still think they are in control but they are in for a big surprise. Ms. Trump is only following the family ideal, To each his own. No amount of Ms. Trump's attempts to normalize herself (flying commercial, sending kids off to school) will hide the fact, her father is a tyrant and bully and she continues to enable him. If I ever see her stand up to him, then I can applaud her, until then she is towing the line like everybody else for her own ambition (or at least her husband's).

"Lifestyles of the Rich and Fatuous"

Cynics began co-opting feminism when they realized the pain of women could be used as a cheap marketing ploy. Ivanka Trump's 'brand' is as feminist as Philip Morris's Virginia Slims cigarettes, pitched toward young 'modern' women in 1968 as
a 'fashion' brand promoting glamour, skinniness, & female empowerment. Its famous jingle proclaimed
"You've got your own cigarette now baby
You've come a long way!"
This was a despicable attempt to leverage feminism to hook women 18-40 on a poisonous, addictive tobacco product, using phony imagery of female empowerment the same fake way Ivanka pitches her brand on instagram.
Ivanka Trump is the poisoned convergence of fake feminism with w/sleazy rightwing politics.
Ivanka's brand, like the entire Trump 'brand,' is built on lies, misrepresentation & hucksterism. She's as 'feminist' as a plastic blow-up sex doll.
Beating the Trumps at their own phony, insincere brand building is artist Richard Prince, who released a statement today delegitimizing a piece of his art currently owned by Ivanka. Richard Prince "renounces" this artwork, returning the $$ he was paid, because he rejects the idea of Ivanka owning his work since the Trump brand offends him politically.
It's only January but Prince's performance already establishes denouncing & delegitimizing his work owned by Ivanka as the best artistic transaction of 2017.
Way to go, Richard Prince!

"Social tolerance was not dealt in the same measure to men and women, and neither Delia nor Charlotte had ever wondered why: like all the young women of their class, they simply bowed to the ineluctable". (Edith Wharton - The Old Maid) 1921.

If she were a democrat with the exact same background this editorial wouldn't exist.

Her #womenwhowork hashtag should be modified to #womenwhoworkbutdonthaveto
1
The only thing setting back feminism is the author's attacking a successful woman like Ivanka.
11
I'm only guessing that when she was a child, Ivanka kicked her brothers butts at Monopoly each and every time. Boardwalk and Park Ave. were ALL hers.
2
Ivanka is the business owner who doesn't pay her interns who work in New York. She proudly promoted her intern's write up about living in New York as an unpaid intern. There are many big companies who enjoy free labor of college interns, but, Ms. Trump who benefited from being a billionaire daughter and never had to struggle for anything, would have had some credibility as a decent human being if she chose to pay her poor interns. She and her siblings are as fake as their dad.
3
Look carefully at her in the photograph next to this article. Doesn't she remind you of Marilyn in The Munsters?
this article.. coupled with these comments.. is in fact the problem. wow
9
What sage parenting and professional advice, pray tell, does Ivanka have for the millions of mothers in America who work for minimum wage? Be a good mommy and "take time to settle your children into their homes and schools?"
3
Well thought out and written. Ivanka Trump was born into wealth and pampered by an adoring father. This is not Ivanka's fault, just a fact of her birth. But to promote herself as someone who does have knowledge of what it is to be an average woman in America is just another Trump lie.
I hope the next four years go fast ,, It is bad enough to read about Trump , . I am not invested in Ivanka , her husband Jarhead, or her brothers Dumb ( eric ) and Dumber (don Jr ) Nor am I interested in Jarhead's brother or his convict fatrher
2
"There are plenty of highly educated young society matrons in New York and Washington and the West Coast, spewing the same neoliberal hucksterism (Be your own Mommy brand! Be your own entrepreneur! Lean In! Sleep Revolution!)"
Oh I love that line. it describes Instagram on any given day.

"...who built a business that bears her name"? Are we to believe she did this on her own...without help from daddy, without a network of influential folks who could advance her aspirations? Please stop.
No one I know believes this is a woman to look up to.
She's daddy's little girl, and as sad as that may be, for her, she is a woman of privilege who has benefited from the old man.

This is the silliest piece I've seen about this topic. Do you honestly believe that Ivanka Trump really needs to rely on her husband to do the dishes? Seriously? She has staff for that. She has nannies who care for her children when she is working or out of town on company business or campaign business. She doesn't pick up the dry cleaning, the maid does. Her husband needn't bother himself with that sort of foolishness because he can afford to hire someone to do it. As for the children, we have no idea how involved he is, but my guess is neither of them is getting up for a 2:00am feeding. For the women who work a full time job, then come home and start another full time job because their husbands do nothing, well that's on you. You either demand that he pulls his weight, or you jettison him as excess cargo, and that's how you put it to him. If you see women controlling the entire child care scenario, don't be too sure it's not the way they want it. I've known plenty of women who refused to let fathers have a say because it had to be done their way. When you can't relinquish control, you end up with everything on your plate.
2
So long as Ivanka keeps getting pats on her hips from her daddy, she'll be happy.
1
Oh please. She has help in the home. I hear it's stressful running a staff of nannies, cooks, housekeepers and drivers.
2
Get a life, for heaven's sake! Just because someone does things that don't fit your rabid ideology doesn't mean you need to rant about it.
7
and this is something significant enough to print? I guess the only real feminists are those who try to escape from anything resembling traditional female roles. your choice if you want to make it, but criticizing those who make different choices seems, well, un-feminist.
4
When I think of Ivanka Trump and women who voted for Trump, all I can think of is the psychological term 'identification with the aggressor.'
4
Wow .. nasty ... nasty, nasty.
I'm glad HRC lost, what would the author said against Chelsey?

I work in a powerful place, and I see this all the time. The women at the top are supposedly "just like us" with all the same problems. On one level, this is true. But on another level, they usually have nannies, maids, money, power, supportive husbands, and very little hardship. They don't speak to the average woman at all. I know they do something, I just don't know what it is. But I don't really pass judgement because every has their lot in life, some are fancier than others. What is funny sometimes though, is some of these women at the top really believe their problems are like ours when really they have no clue what other average people struggle with.
2
Why are there only 5 comments all this time on this editorial ? Your can bet your bippy many true hard working American women did not ,would not be fooled by her . How can she even assume she can speaks for any American women . The true ones yes were not fooled into voting for her dad and could not ever imagine Ivanka is any better . Sorry for America
Ivana Trump was born to wealth and power. That's a fact. She is now in a position to do tremendous ( to borrow her father's phrase ) things for women worldwide if she uses her humanity, intellect and objectiveness to roll up her sleeves and show us what she is truly made of. I am rooting for her.
4
Having read the first few comments, my immediate reaction is " get a life". However, after reflection, I can see a level of viciousness not only for DJT but for anyone remotely construed to be a supporter. I attribute it to a terrible mean spirited envy. Not only anti Trump but anti fun. If it is not too politically incorrect to say, "lighten up" jokers.
7
It's not envy, although course that is what the Trumpian mind would think.
It is deep revilsion coupled with rational fear.

2
Poor Ivaka, she doesn't conform to Ms Filipivic's standards of a "real" feminist. Sounds like bitterness to me.
11
But, like, that's just her opinion, dude. She's not creating policy. Relax people, sheesh.
5
Donald Trump is seriously ill and dangerous to all. Stop writing articles about his family. It softens the reality that Trump will be able, on his own accord, to start a nuclear war.
3
I don't think Ivanka is out there trying to be a role model of anything, she just happens to be who she is. Not many women in this world are born to money and married to even more so money, if she is a mother and enjoys it as her favorite role among the many roles she juggles, what's wrong with that? She could have conceivably been a socialite taking a path such as her friend Paris Hilton, making a mockery of herself instead she hit the books at Wharton, not just another finishing college like most young rich ladies enter. Go look at Chelsea Clinton's career path and accomplishments and you will find Chelsea has done little other then the typical career path of the daughter or son of Presidents - work for big media or paid board seats of charities. This story is just another sour grapes story of a writer who is looking to do a hate Ivanka because she is so beautiful and smart and richer than most?? How juvenile is that!
12
If Ivanka Trump had grown up Yvonne Tripp, but still the same brain, I am curious to just how successful would she be today? I would guess that Daddy's name and money must have been a big boost-- but how successful would she be if he was just Don Tripp, apartment manager?
2
"But trying to emulate the Ivanka model without her financial means is a precarious path. "
You mean like living the Libertine lifestyle of having kids out of wedlock? Those with financial means could always take care of their "illegitimate" child and insure they lived a good life. So why are the poor behaving this way? Why are they having kids out of wedlock, fully knowing that they can't take care of the baby's needs? It's like they want the LIbertine lifestyle, but don't have the financial means to do it properly. What gives?!?!?!?
The writer in general sounds aggrieved. I advise her to be careful what you wish for, you may get it. Women wanted it all, and now they have it all. They get to work a full time job now just like the men, and they will be the ones to care for the child and home, just as they have always done. As the writer points out, ladies, don't try this at home unless you married well.

Poor Ivanka, who is this evil person whose young family is attacked on an aircraft by an attorney no less than with child in tow? Cheered on by a college professor no less. Who is this do nothing daughter of a rich guy who made her own fortune? Who is this airhead who wrote a book detailing how she manages with three kids, a marriage and her business? Careful with the venom you preach, one day, someone on the other side will taunt the daughters of Obama and others whom you take as your own in the same way. How will you defend them?
10
I wonder just how successful she would be without her daddy's money backing her up? For that matter how successful would her daddy have been without his own daddy's money as a start? Can you think of two less " self made" people in America?
3
Well, at least she is crafting a feminism that is dangerous, rather than pedantic and annoying.
7
Ivanka graduated and was given upon graduation a job that already broke the glass ceiling. What kind of feminist model is that?
5
It's easy to be "...a wife and mother first and a businesswoman second..." when you start out with more financial resources than God. Ivanka Trump has done nothing more than ride her father's coattails...and checking account.
When you own your own business, you get to set the rules. You want your kids to be in a special room next to your office, attended by nurses or private teachers, or in the office itself? Voila! It is so. Who's to object? This doesn't make you feminist avatar. It make you a rich -----.
Is it merely coincidence that Ivanka, Eric and Donald Jr. bear a striking resemblance to Snidely Whiplash?

Try being honest, Jill, you would love her if she was a democrat!
7
Easy to be a "successful entrepreneur" when you have a billionaire daddy and billionaire husband to bankroll you and nannies for your kids. I bet she has never changed a diaper in her life either. Too busy directing the people who actually do the work of designing and running her company. Plus she has to have tight dresses, perfect coiffure, nails done etc. as well as working out to keep her figure.
1
The ascent of a Balkan adventuress to the headlines of NYT is amazing.
2
After the last 18 months I know people flock to the NY "Trump has a 9% chance" Times for spot on insight into the Trumps and American Politics. But those are mostly independent free thinkers. When are you going to cater more to the urban government loving NYT subscribers who dislike anything Trump?
You need to do more for that segment.
You need to do more for that segment.
1
A similar article might have been written about Hilary Clinton, who enjoyed the status of wife of former governor and former President to then run for office as a feminist.
5
You know what... this column is a cheap shot...at a harmless target and therefore unforgivably unfair. Certainly there are more important issues at stake. Ms. Trump has never claimed to be an avatar of a feminist future as the author implies.. She will have no real power in the next administration. She appears to be the most thoughtful and rational person in the Trump family ...so any influence she does have will be positive. So why go out of your way to hurt her on the pages of the NYT? What's next the Trump grandkids??? Let's be honest about the blatant hypocrisy at play here. This article would have never... ever.... under any circumstances...been written about Chelsea Clinton had HRC won....we all know that. But because the author can't stand Ivanka's conservative father she feels entitled to go after her in a mean-spirited way. This is uncalled for and below the high standards of the NYT. We can do better than this.
10
I'm not even sure really what she's done to give people the idea that she's "thoughful and rational." She has refrained from doing or saying anything blatantly offensive or idiotic, I'll grant that, but it seems to me that mostly people are thinking the best of her because, let's face it, the default is to think well of pretty blond women in the absence of blatantly bad behavior. All she has to do is smile, basically, and the media and apparently most citizens apparently think she's a good egg.
Don't be ungracious because Ivanka Trump does not follow your formula for being a modern feminist. Are you actually suggesting that a modern liberated woman of your definition would not be a mother to her children and settle them into school and a new home in Washington DC? What would you have her do, hire a specialist to do it for her?
I think you are just bent out of shape because she has more money than you do.
I think you are just bent out of shape because she has more money than you do.
7
Ivanka is but data to show the single most important predictor of a woman's future life is the family into which she is born.
4
As a career woman, when you have small children (elementary school or younger,) they want and need their mothers. Things change and kids get older. The reality is that women's careers are on cruise control during the young years. There are peaks before and after, but little children need their mothers. Ivanka is doing the right thing.
4
And the move to the levers of power in Washington DC is just a coincidence.
"She has it all.."
Indeed.
Sadly, your column curiously reeks of jealousy, and not the furtherance of an evolving view of feminism. It is 2017 after all.

Is this the 391st or 392nd Times piece showing hatred towards Ivanka? Would bet what little I have that if Hillary won and an adviser proposed the same policies Ivanka does, the Times would be falling all over itself with praise, saying it is a "good start".
7
Incoherent, sophomore sociology 101 nonsense.
Now you're going after Ivanka?
Of course she has been blessed by "privilege"--beauty, brains, wealth--
and she has fashioned a role for herself. What about feminist freedom of choice?
I wonder if this piece would have been written if Ivanka Trump had been homely or charmless. The" beautiful and blessed" thing still sticks in the craw of many only to masquerade behind feminist rhetoric and political
envy.
How about a new category of victimizer: the" privi-phobe?" Definition: person who judges another by exteriors and on shallow grounds, without regard to character or inner gifts.
Ivanka Trump: charming, lovely and blessed.
(Life's not fair. Deal with it.)

But while Ms. Trump has found both professional and personal success by enjoying many of the benefits of feminism,

That's comical. And redolent of Obama's minimalization of entrepreneurship and sweat equity: "You didn't build that; someone built it for you." Would love to see Camille Paglia's dissection of the animadversions here.

As opposed to Chelsea Clinton who earned everything she got, har, har, har.
There's a feminist icon for you!
There's a feminist icon for you!
11
No woman who is honest about what Donald Trump does with women could both support him and be a feminist. A feminist daughter would be estranged from this particular father. Integrity would demand it.
3
If she's a feminist, then I'm an athlete.
9
Did Bill ever do the dishes?
6
I have not met a women yet, no matter what age, who connects with Ivanka and the Fake Feminism she represents.
8
Everything about this family is fake.
7
You make her sound scarier than the Russian KGB. I assume you've checked that out already?
3
Question 1....Did Ivanka actually write that book. Dad did not write his book. Like father like daughter?
Question 2....Where is does Melania fit in? As the wife shouldn't she be the First Lady? Ivanka has three kids...Mrs Trump just one. Why is Ivanka the choice?
Question 3....How have parents been treated by the organizations associated with the Trump empire? Seems as if this sudden recognition that parents might need help is a ploy.

"...post-feminist huckster." I like that and how appropriate.
My biggest fear about Ivanka is that she will follow her father's footsteps and lead our next political dynasty. In spite of the truths and inconsistencies you point out about her in your piece, she seems to have a large following of her own.

It's refreshing to see women rip each out to shreds just like men do. Congratulations you've achieved equality. It's too bad that hate kept the most qualified candidate in US History from being president. Enjoy the next four years.
3
Just like men do? I don't see that at all. I work in a large organization and see the sniping coming from women, especially toward other women.
1
The NYT attacks are non stop on the Trump family and while Ivanka seemed to be immune for a while, I knew it was just a matter of time. I expect to see something about Barron soon, and no doubt it will be nasty. Surely you'll leave the grandchildren alone-at least until Trump's second term anyway.
6
"Shop my look" - no thanks.
3
"...she’s a kind of post-feminist huckster, selling us traditional femininity and support of male power wrapped up in a feminist bow..."
Women went from men telling them how to live their lives to women telling them how to live their lives.
The unrelenting viciousness of women towards other women is appalling.

I know real women who didn't have this rich girls money . None voted for her father . And all raised their children and maintained a honest relationship with their husbands . Ivanka ( her name is not a common American woman's name ) can just divest herself from any concerns of real American women or their true needs and concerns . True American women do not need her , her cosmetics and high- heel shoes , her expensive jewlery . Yes she would make a good stay at home mom and stay out off the real lives of all women in our country .
1
Ivanka is a phony like her father and the whole family. Trump never stated by electing him President , we would get the whole family into government! His sons Uday and Qusay are worse than Ivanka! Trump wants to become richer by having his family enrich themselves. Trump is acting like President Suharto of Indonesia, every foreign company deal in the country, the Trump want a percentage. No wonder Congressmen Jasen Chaffetz is attacking the Federal Ethics office! The American people must follow the law. Trump and the rich can do whatever they want since no law applies to him! If a law could impact him, do not worry the GOP Congress will change the law to suit Trump! The USA is in major trouble!
2
Finally someone has written about the hypocrisy of the neofeminist who will be held as an example to us all. I chose a career in a typical female and traditional arena, teaching. If IT ever spoke to my peer group it was only to remind us that we can't afford a $10,000 bracelet that bears her name. Call her out for the snake oil huckster she is, and praise the authentic working women who REALLY do it all
5
Imagine it, being raised in a home with Donald Trump. I am sure she is loved but just imagine it. How else can she behave?
4
Loved by Donald? The narcissist loves only what he sees in the mirror.
Unfortunately I know a lot about the narcissistic personality. When Donald Trump started appearing with regularity on my TV screen, which before the election was often set to cable news networks, I began my slide into full fledged PTSD.
I view Ivanka as a survivor. She is a damaged person who had to construct something around herself to protect herself.
Much like her ever-smiling, dead-eyed Ken-doll husband, raised by a different Big Daddy -- who went to jail for a fraud scheme that involved setting his own sister up to see video of her husband with a hooker Big Daddy sent to a hotel to entrap him.

I can't imagine it was easy growing up 'Trump', especially as the older daughter.
I do not envy Ivanka's life for one second. She's one tough cookie. Maybe THE smartest one too.
I was amazed that she and her husband and kids actually flew commercial on Jet Blue to Hawaii over the holidays. Those days are over.
Love her or hate her, she's a force to be reckoned with. A very clever, carefully orchastrated one.

Clearly Ivanka has done everything that a feminist could ask, or even dreamed of when I was a feminist in the 1970s-80s. But that is not enough for this opinion writer. Heh! Why not celebrate a woman who "has it all" and probably at great effort. what more would you want?
7
A beautiful couple, living the American dream, enough said.
7
Would you have written a similar column if Hilary was president and Chelsea wanted to be an advisor to her mother on issues related to being a working mother? I hear what you are say, but your partisan side is showing. This is why the Dems lost the election.
4
Why would anyone listen to another baby born on third base, who "started" her own company with total financial backing by family and other rich friends. Who has never worked like average people for a paycheck, nor had to worry about not getting one, or getting laid off, or daycare, or anything else.
She's just another trust fund grifter like all the rest in her family. She has no particular insights, wisdom or life experience that warrants our listening to anything she has to say. I don't wish her ill will, but we shouldn't look to her as a model for 99% of this country. She's relevant only to the 1%.

Gag me; Ivanka and her husband have no business helping their autocratic father rule...Trump dynasty won't last long.
3
I'll preface this by saying I am a college educated single woman in my mid-30s. I fully support myself today as I have done so for the past 13 years through a decade long career in finance and now as a design entrepreneur. I voted for Clinton and am still devastated that she lost...What exactly do people think Ivanka should be doing with her life to promote the feminist agenda today? The reality is she was born rich and has a good life. Why would you shame her for being a working mother in the realm to which she was born into? Can she relate to the majority of working mothers today? No, absolutely not but why is it wrong for her to talk about her own experiences in the hopes that others can find a common bond. Can you be a feminist only if you live outside the 1%? Do fancy lash extensions and painted toenails disqualify you from feminism? I haven't read her book, it might be garbage, but maybe you should trash the book instead of the person.
8
The women surrounding Mr. Trump, from his phony wife (who may be a Russian spy) to his oldest daughter have nothing in common with the women who voted for him. They are not role models, like Mrs. Obama or classy, like Jackie Kennedy or even maternal, like Barbara Bush.
1
"his phony wife (who may be a Russian spy)"
Melania a Russian spy? First time I've heard that one. So much is so wrong about all things Trump, that we really had best stay calm and not believe EVERY conspiracy theory that is floated about the Trumps. It seems clear quite a few of them will prove to be true, but not all. Just simple math.
And honestly? I think that is also the first time I've heard Barbara Bush described as "maternal." Yegads

Male domination all the way in the Trump family. We see Jared's ascend and Ivanka's descent. We haven't seen Donald's daughters-in-law. They are the invisibles and Ivanka will be one of them in the pursuit of Jared's ambition.
1
I can't stand Donald Trump but I find this particular criticism of his daughter confusing. Are criticizing her more for not publicly asking her husband to do more housework (my guess is that neither of them do housework, they hire others to do it)? Or because she is rich and so can afford to spend time with her children and not work?
It appears to me that you are really upset at her for not publicly denouncing her father and his policies. There are many who should criticized for not standing up to Donald Trump, but I don't think it is fair to expect his daughter to do so.

2
She leaves me cold. I don't understand why people think she has anything to offer or the ability to reign in her father or husband, for that matter. She is just like them.
5
Along came a spider and sat down beside her,
"Hi, Dad," she said.
"Hi, Dad," she said.
1
Every paragraph of this article should begin with the sentence:
She has a rich father. She doesn't have to work.
Or, when that sentence doesn't begin a paragraph, this sentence is apt:
Her husband is really, really rich. She doesn't have to work.
Or yet another apt sentence:
Her father handed her a top-of-the-pile position when she graduated college, she didn't have to rise up through any rank, she was gifted the right to run her own company because of her Sugar Daddy Dad. (In parentheses: just like her dad was gifted his start in business by his father).
The idea that Ivanka is one iota representative of working woman/working mom feminism is laughable. She is representative of rich Daddy girl, rich Hubby girl largesse.
If she can stop off in WDC to play Mommy in a 5 million dollar home, good for her. But the idea that she's a feminist or, and I'm shrieking out this clause, her father is, is the kind of laughable that makes people go crazy with an hysterical explosion of Are You Kidding Me?

The legitimate points made in the article would have been much more persuasive without the name calling and personal attacks.
3
I have just today had the thought that the very peculiar move the entire Kushner family is making to Washington, DC including buying a new home and resettling their children in new schools is for the express purpose of taking care of her father. She is always there on the scene watching over him either to monitor the meetings so they can be sure he understands what's going on or simply making sure that he doesn't go off the rails. Kushner will be in the White House but most days when her children are in school I can bet that Ivanka will be sitting in meetings to include the cabinet.
2
I have never considered Ivanka Trump a feminist, fake or otherwise. And her contention that her father is a feminist is beyond laughable!
6
I couldn't care less about Ivanka Trump, but writer complains that Mrs Trump sells "traditional femininity and support of male power wrapped up in a feminist bow".
Frankly, what is wrong with that? I realize that this in contrast to much of the feminist 'ideals' , but the past few decades have shown us that these constructed 'ideals' have caused painful internal struggle for women between professional achievement and maintaining a family.
Women can continue to pursue this futile objective if they like, but you can't blame women who have found their peaceful 'traditional' equilibrium outside these 'ideals'.

There's nothing like beginning my weekend reading the sympathetic musings of a man about the "painful internal struggle" and "futility" of feminism.
Thank you for your kind concern, Abdussalam. You have given at least one feminist a good chuckle today.

Ivanka's a rich-kid, rarely do richkids have any clue about real life.
Her heart belongs to daddy, & daddy is as daddy does:
"...you know, I don't want to sound too much like a chauvinist—but when I come home and dinner's not ready, I'll go through the roof..."
No daughter could possibly be devoted to this kind of 'daddy' who says these kinds of disgusting things & ever be considered 'feminist':

Her daddy paws her constantly and publicly, without shame and apparently with out rebuke from the "independent feminist" herself. Her daddy is a perv and she doesn't care. What a gal...
4
Money paving the way, never have to compete for a job, never have to be accountable to anybody but a family member, don't pay your contractors, a real role model. Not.
4
When you have the Trump fortune, you can afford around the clock nannies and cooks and chauffeurs. It gives you plenty of time to be a career woman.
4
Ivanka is nothing more than a younger, slimmer, more attractive version of her father, albeit with different plumbing. Unlike her crude and crass father, Ivanka knows how to talk and behave in public but that is a superficial difference. People will underestimate her deviousness and ruthlessness at their peril.
2
Somewhere a young woman without the financial means of trump is going to pick up her book and try to follow her footsteps, without realizing that the book applies only to other women like trump - rich and full of hypocrisy.
4
Ms. Trump, who adopted orthodox Judaism, when she married Jared Kushner, certainly committed herself to a religion that claims male dominance over women, a position she must sustain -- at least in her public statements -- while trying to be someone in her own right. Not an enviable position.
3
Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't the essence of feminism is that a woman can have a choice? She has the option of choosing her path, instead of having it set by a man.
If a woman decides what's best for her is to be a corporate executive, it's her choice. But she somehow gets vilified, and labeled a trader to the cause, if she decides she'd prefer to spend the lion's share of her time with her children. Just the fact that SHE can make that choice is in and of itself empowering.
Life isn't linear. It has curves and ebbs and flows. If Ms. Trump's brand of feminism is objectionable to you, maybe you can take comfort in the fact that she had a choice. Maybe it's not what you'd have chosen, but moralizing against it is more of a betrayal of the cause than what you believe she is doing.

Ivanka is still a cipher. We don't know enough about her yet. Charlie Rose hasn't gotten his hands on her. Her mom Ivana, brilliant in business, was banished from the Kingdom of Trump, while Ivanka was left to be under the thumb of the king narcissist, to be his supply, and most likely drained of any fight she had in her. There's co-dependency there. I wager, not knowing much, that she's a complex cookie, in a Dynasty-style fight with her step mother for prominence in the WH. Melania may not be as big a pushover as you think. I hope we don't have time to let this story unfold. I hope Trump's Russian capers do him in and we can change the channel.
4
No mention of the nanny or two who surely are lurking in the background.
5
There is this stereotype of feminists being humorless which I don't agree with. Then I read an article like this, where one so-called feminist stabs another in the back because she doesn't like the other's brand of feminism. "Least feminist of all"? This op-ed.
1
Ivanka is a wolf in sheep's clothing who, by supporting her clearly misogynistic father, in no way deserves to be attached to the word "feminism".
PS Her father is a wolf in wolf's clothing.

3
Ms. Filipovic's jealously and bitterness made this a hard piece to read! But this is nothing more than a tempest in a teapot. No one cares what Ms. Filipovic's definition of feminism is, and Ms. Trump is under no duty to conform to Filipovic's narrow view on the role of women. I guess the liberal media machine had a slow day vilifying Mr. Trump so they decided to branch out and insult other family members in this pointless article.
4
I don’t know Ivanka Trump or anything about her other than her father is the President elect. And he is a terrible role model for anyone. Hope it didn’t rub off on her.
But the best way to measure Mrs. Trump’s feminism and as a mother will be years from now. And that is how did the children turn out as adults? Are they good citizens or not?

If you ever wonder why women aren't widely represented in the boardrooms and halls of power in this country, look no further than this article.
Rather than support their fellow women when they achieve success, liberal feminists snipe and sneer at them.
Apparently, the only legitimate "feminist" is the one who conforms to the author's views of feminism. Conform, conform, conform!
So long diversity, so long freedom.

Oh, give it a rest, she didn't "achieve success," she was born a billionaire. There is a difference and women aren't so dumb as you apparently think.
4
“I have a few very important roles, but being a mother will always be my favorite,” she posted with a family photo.
There is nothing wrong with this in a feminist world, and I think Ms. Filipovic's case against Ms. Trump is misplaced.
The problem is, and always will be, Donald Trump.
Also, Ivanka Trump married an Orthodox Jew. They can have strict views on the roles of women. So her "business" involvement will only go so far regardless.

MODERN Orthodox.
Very different from, for example, the Hasidim. Have you noticed Ivanka wearing a wig and/or a babushka? Her arms and legs are virtually never covered by a stitch of fabric. Etc., etc.
The Jewish world is a very diverse world. Let's keep our facts straight.

I would love to read one article about WHY men like Jared Kushner are not "leaning in" at home instead of yet another piece criticizing a woman for not being a feminist, or not being the right kind of feminist, or not being "feminist enough".
3
Ivanka Trump Kushner is in the spotlight to shield Trump from women in general and Melania from the press in particular. She is the bright shiny object who will swan around White House receptions. Breitbart, Conway and Spicer will act as fixers putting Ivanka's smoothly rebranded "First Lady" facade out front so no one will notice the actual First Lady's inabilities and embarrassing past. Ivanka is there to make Trump look better. Good luck with that!
4
She seems like a nice girl but PUHLEESE, she has no clue about what real woman have to deal with in a real life. More importantly, there is no normalizing the trumps and to do so ignores how they have been promoted way above their qualifications due to being born on 3rd base. If she really cared about woman, she would tell her father to shut up and crawl back under the rock he came from.
One more thing, how creepy is it that she seems to be taking on the First Lady role after her dad has said all those things about how hot she is and how he would date her if she wasn't his daughter?

The idea that Ivanka Trump does anything herself, and is any kind of role model for women is nonsense. This piece is somewhat insightful, but doesn't get at the specifics of what makes her feminism fake; she certainly has executive staff to run her business, and domestic help to tote the kids back and forth to school, sort through DC real listings to find a home, and a personal chef to do the shopping & cooking. There is little or no financial conflict with her husband since they are both independently wealthy. It's too bad the Trumps didn't follow the Fitzgerald idea and just go to a place where rich people are rich together, and leave the rest of alone.

what was the point of this piece of writing?. ..... I am sure you can write a piece as bad as this about yourself....
why don't you write about how Trump has shaken the core of poweful government official that saw themselves as write full owners of government entities -staring with crooked Hillary Clinton and from there down to the stare department the FBI CIA and you name it.... we can see how these people are twisting and turning at the loss od crooked Hillary Clinton that have left then in the cold.... i think is great what has happened......

Isn't it nice that she's a working Mom and has never had to survive on her own for even one second of her privileged life. I don't envy her, but I do think that people who are to the (new-money) manor born have all the tools needed to project an image that convinces people "she did it all by herself."
She lines up perfectly behind her "men," and will, no doubt, do whatever bidding needs to be done. I don't dislike her like I do her father, but I don't think she's anything to write home about, either. Daddy set her up right from the start. She's a very lucky girl. We'll see where she lands down the road.

That photo of her with her father and the Japanese businessman shows a very dour expression, sort of a fixed pout and a lack of self-awareness, in the eyes too—sheltered and naïve; doubtful she will be of much help to anyone in the non—.001er category—which is to say everybody. Quel dommage.
3
Don't be fooled by Ivanka's charm. She's every bit as ruthless, corrupt, scheming, and devoid of values as her father is.
6
Oh please...whether it's Ivanka Trump or Marissa Mayer, I get so sick of these "super moms" whom we're made to believe balance family and career effortlessly. Sure, it's not too hard when you have a phalanx of nannies, maids, assistants and various other caregivers.
7
Ivanka is so far from being feminist, that it wouldn't occur to me to call her even a fake feminist. To me, the bigger concern is that she uses her poise, manners, and ability to speak in complete sentences to make her father seem more acceptable. Is he misogynist? But look how close he is with his nice daughter (never mind how creepy he is towards her and all his well documented behaviors). Is he anti-Semitic? But he accepted his daughter's conversion to Judaism (never mind his choice of neo-nazi staff). Is he an amoral narcissist? Then how did he raise that nice daughter? (Never mind that she actively participated in his real estate scams). I think a new position needs to be created for her: Normalizer In Chief.
9
"how did he raise that nice daughter?"
He didn't. He's proudly on record as having played almost no role at all in child care for any of his children. I think the youngest daughter has said he sometimes sent her nice notes when she got good grades. It was plain she had clung to those notes, 'cus that was about all she ever got from him, if you don't count the money. We hear hear nothing at all about his interactions with his 10 year old son, probably because they almost certainly rarely interact at all. Father of the year he was not.

Let's hope we can learn the truth of Trump & Co's Russian connection/collaboration sooner than later and escort all of the Trump family off the premises and front page of the NYT sooner than later.
Like all things Trump, Ivanka's "substance" is a veneer.
There is no connection between the reality of women who work and Ivanka Trump.

This is a woman who said that one of her life lessons was when as a young person she was forced to fly coach to the south of France. A hardship worthy of Dickens, indeed.
4
It is Trump's prerogative to appoint whoever he wants as his advisers.
There are no legal issues with those advisers being members of his family,
and all ethical related issues are Trump's and not yours/ours. Bashing Trump over such unethical stuff is a waste of time. Bashing Ivanka for being a fake feminist goes way too far, is your hang-up dear Jill (not ours), and has nothing to do with journalism.

She is not worth even discussing with the term feminist. Can't stand any Trump.
3
I'm sorry, but she had a job in her father's company, a trust fund to fall back on, and a name she could license for additional money (she doesn't design those clothes, you know)—none of which she actually earned for herself. If she had, I'd be more inclined to give two seconds to her pseudo-feminist views and flaccid "women who work" mottos. As she hasn't, though, nothing to see or hear there of any true meaning or consequence.
3
There is something about her that is really strange. I keep thinking that if there were ever a movie, "The Stepford Daughters", she would be one.
This woman has been raised by Donald Trump. Her view has to be just as warped as Trump's was by his father and mother, not to mention the wonderful Roy Cohn. Everything about her is so carefully staged. Everything she says sounds like an answer to a question in a beauty pageant, rather than something she really thinks. She seems to be not living a life, so much as living an image or playing the role in a movie of her father's life, like this really is all a made for TV movie.
"The 45th President"
Dutiful Daugher - Ivanka Trump
Supportive Son In Law - Jared Kushner
Michele Obama Plagiarizer - Melania Trump
Guy Who Keeps Saying "Believe Me" - Eric Trump
Etc.
This must be a tough existence on some levels. She appears to have "it all', but I wonder if she really has any freedom of through outside the boundaries that have been taught to her. I'm no professional, but if you read the book "Blink", you realize that you can see when something isn't....quite right. You don't know what it is, but you just know that there is...something.

Horrifyingly dangerous!
1
Does anybody really believe Ivanka is changing diapers etc? How many Nannies do they have? Does anybody really believe Ivanka is setting up the house? How many architects and interior decorators have they hired for this move? Get real--because the Trump-Kushners live in a different reality--take a look at Trump Tower as exhibit number 1.
2
I doubt Ivanka "pounded the pavement" for a job after college or was an unpaid intern or did any type of professional work outside of Trump industries. She is not a legitimate spokesperson for women.
5
Ivanka does not know the meaning of hard work. The Trumps are an American family of fancy grifters
4
I will start respecting Ivanka Trump when she starts acknowledging the team of "help" that make her perfectly coiffed, faux-feminist "women who work" lifestyle possible. I just wonder how many of them are illegal immigrants who her father wants to send home...
1
I wasn't aware that feminism demanded allegiance to a particular political persuasion. Demanding that women think and feel a certain way doesn't sound like freedom to me.
2
For the file called "things so obvious they shouldn't have to be stated":
Of course feminism implies allegiance to political perspectives that advance rather than disabling the rights of women.

1
Pretty easy to do what Ivanka Trump does, balancing work and child raising when you can afford nannies, child care, household help, cooks, repair people, vacations etc etc etc. She has never been poor, and had to struggle to work and be a mother, single or otherwise. I doubt if she could have made it in the real world. As role models we need real women who have had to fight for their rights and their families and their careers. She is not a feminist.
4
This is the kind of blather that makes regular Americans hate liberalism and feminists. Try making something or providing a needed service rather than preaching. You'll find that producing is a lot harder.
3
There was a picture of Ivanka's brother-in-law & his girlfriend in the center of the page. My reaction was that the woman has no self respect - If you deconstruct the ‘dress’ – it’s a dog-collar, leash and objectification instead of a person
Donald Trump a "Feminist"????
Feminists don't grope women.
Feminists don't call women "pigs" or "dogs".
Feminists don't chant "Lock her up! Lock her up!"
Feminists don't drool over their own children.
Feminists don't sneer that women "bleed all over the place."
Feminists don't find breast-feeding "disgusting".
Feminists don't get creeped out because women pee.
Feminists don't need to be baby-sat every minute by their children.
Feminists don't have to kiss-up to knuckle-draggers.
Feminists don't threaten women wanting CHOICE with jail.
The LAST thing that Donald Trump is... is a Feminist.
By saying that Trump is a "Feminist", Ivanka has now proven that she is NOT.
She can try to "cover her father's boorishness" all she wants, but he is simply a very dangerous man, no friend to ANY female, even - and especially - his own daughter.
Flee, Ivanka - while you still can..... and take the kids with you!

This article is totally uncalled for. We did not elect her.
2
And yet here she is. Advising her father. As is her husband. Isn't nepotism great?
6
Oh pu-leease, we've got plenty to be concerned about with the Donald and his administration, but this article is some weak sauce in trying to smear Ivanka. "Fake" feminism? Give it a rest.
3
Nothing wrong with masculinity or male power.
1
The last cited source noting that, "dissonance sows significant marital conflict" actually finds no significant increase in marital conflict between parents with differential views of responsibilities for men and women. The article notes that OTHER sources have found this, but that their investigation did not.
Please look at the results and not just the hypothesis, Jill.
Please look at the results and not just the hypothesis, Jill.
Yet Hillary is the poster child for feminists. Hillary, who never stayed home to raise Chelsea, who always had a nanny/caregiver. Hillary who stood by a husband who for decades persistently humiliated her wth a long string of women - even in the White House. Hillary, who would never have been elected Senator of a state in which she had never lived, was made Sec of State with little background in diplomacy, and who won the Democratic Presidential nomination - all while riding on Bill's coattails. But she's an "admired feminist".what am I missing here? Oh - I forgot! It's because Hillary is a Democrat and no Republican woman could possibly be a feminist.
6
Jill Filipovic would like all women to be nothing more than avatars of a feminist future.
I'd prefer that women be real.
With the effort of Jill Filipovic and others, we may never know what a woman truly is; what is innate to the grace and character of a woman. Only that women are somehow not good enough.
Live your life, Ivanka. It's a gift for you to use as you please.

Wow, I'm surprised how quickly a "real" feminist has turned on Ivanka. The double standard among liberals is fascinating. Clinton embraced Sheryl "Lean In" Sandberg - after she became a billionaire at Facebook.
Keep pushing identity politics. It worked so well for liberals in 2017.
I expect that when the liberal press goes low, Ivanka will go high.

She is a talented businesswoman, an entrepreneur and a Wharton grad. She manages all she does while managing to have 3 children and an equally busy spouse. Why are women so anti-Ivanka? She is a wonderful role model. Compare her to Chelsea Clinton who perhaps this author would have celebrated. She is basically a stay at home mother (nothing wrong with that) living on the largesse and riding the coat tails of mommy and daddy. At least Ivanka and her husband can buy their own house in DC - Chelsea's 15M pad didn't come from her made up gigs. Ivanka is amazing - why not just admit it and work with her on the things we all care about?
1
Businesswoman . Entrepreneur. Wharton grad. I'd be willing to bet none of which she would have "achieved" had she not been named Trump. And seriously, women should be pro-Ivanka simply because she is female??
What nonsense.
What nonsense.
2
Let's not even comment. They are not even worth the time in dissecting. Hollow is as hollow does. They love the attention, even negative attention.
3
True feminism is not shaming a woman for her choices. If Ivanka wants to stay at home and take care of her family, then it is HER DECISION and it's no less feminist than being a woman who is the sole family breadwinner. Feminism means being able to make your own choices, regardless of society's expectations. This article boxes Ivanka into the trope that to be a true feminist you have to be an actively working woman. Boxing women into any trope at all, even the one where they have to be working women in order to be called "feminist" is antifeminist and deplorable.
2
I find it hard to identify with Ivanka Trump is any fashion. She's the typical rich arrogant spoiled girl that was born on third base and thinks that she hit a triple. And on top of that she appears to be trying to trying to soak the voters to enrich herself and her brand at their expense. Corruption and con jobs are the Trump family values.
8
Ivanka wants to be the "Jackie-O" of our times; to project the aura of the "Jackie Kennedy" myth. In her time, Mrs. Kennedy was forced to play the part, despite her many worthwhile talents and accomplishments.
Ivanka is her father's daughter, a salesperson, a huckster to the core. It's all fake in furtherance of fame and fortune and, I am afraid, dreams of building a political dynasty.
Expose the myth. She has made herself fair game.

Ivanka Trump does very little of the actual work of running a home or parenting her children. She has a team of servants.
Further, you must never bring up her "wonderful, progressive" maternity leave plan without mentioning that, as she described it, it is only available to married couple filing jointly. Single parents need not bother to ask--it's not for them.

Could we please not define setting up a house and acclimating children to a new school as "trivial details"? Just because women traditionally do these things doesn't render them trivial. The more quotidian aspects of life are important too -- almost as valuable as the business of designing bracelets and high heels.
Ivanka Trump is an not an avatar of feminism or traditional femininity. She outrageously rich, and disproportionately influential. An outlier, in the regular world.

"But trying to emulate the Ivanka model without her financial means is a precarious path."
Exactly. Their incomes allow them to have staff. She's not schlepping to CB2 on the weekend to look at couches for that DC house or picking up a child from school when it's sick and she's in the middle of a meeting. I'd wager she's not cooking, washing dishes or cleaning her apartment on Saturday either.
Most women who work have been there and done that.
If Ms. Trump wants to identify with the women who voted for her husband (I was NOT one) she should start having a long hard look at what no affordable health care looks like for a single mom, or lack of decent maternity leave or how not to have to put a career on hold while having children.

The concept of feminism has always been a moving target depending upon the viewpoint of the person who advances any given proposition about gender roles. To describe Ivanka's brand as "fake feminism" is to criticize what she (and her father) represents to you. This a rather transparent attack on Trumpism as opposed to fake feminism. I am not convinced that the two have a great deal in common.
1
This article completely ignores the significance of Ivanka's religious conversion and its impact on her "feminism." One must explore the role of women in that context to fully appreciate her "fake feminism."
3
Ivanka Trump certainly is ambitious and that's a good thing, but she really is so disconnected from real life and real women who work really hard to earn a buck and raise children at the same time. It's laughable to put her up on this phony "successful businesswoman" pedestal. I'm sure she is probably a nice person, but it pays to be already born on third base. Besides, I don't know of any working woman who can afford to buy her $10k bracelet.
7
The insult here is that a daughter of a billionaire believing that her idea of "women who work" applies to everyone else. It does not; it cannot. She's never been in the shoes of the great majority of the unwashed masses and cannot know anything about them. Any obstacle she comes up against, whether it be child care or career issues, her financial resources provide a solution. How arrogant.
10
There is nothing typical about Ivanka, so making her an exemplar of any sort (feminist, working mom, role model) is really just a joke. When I see her I think less about her business "accomplishments" or even her phony feminism, but rather the subject of her father's ogles and leers. Gross.
9
The criticism many Trump partisans from the mid-west, south, and small town America have made about folks from the east and west coasts and major metropolitan areas - that they live in a bubble and have lost touch with the rest of the country - clearly applies to Ivanka Trump when it comes to understanding the reality of life for most women, working outside the home or not.
4
I don't think either Ms. Trump or Mr. Kushner ever do the dishes, sweep a floor or do the laundry. They have never been like most Americans and never will be. I would not take advice from someone who has no experience at all with the life that I lead.
9
As Jill Filipovic pointed out about Ivanka's "seems to require nothing of men", I think should be the ultimate achievement for all woman in the future.
1
She's dependent on Daddy's money.
1
Ivanka is not the correct kind of celebrity feminist. She doesn't belong to the so-called women's movement. She is wealthy. Yes. She does have a career and family. Yes. She is a highly successful entrepreneur in her own right. Yes. She is a woman. But. So what? She is not on the appropriate political fundraising lists.
1
I am not sure why Ivanka Trump feels she has something to 'offer' to working women anywhere. Her circumstances are so extraordinary that she might as well be a unicorn.
Equally, I am not sure why the author of this piece feels a need to extrapolate from Ivanka Trump's life a mythical rendering of her feminism such as it may be.
Public figures have public personas. You may not like Ivanka's choice of costume but it is no more realistic a construction than imagining that Lady GaGa walks around in feathered gowns when not on stage.

"Ms. Trump’s clear ambition remains unobjectionable in part because she seems to require nothing of men."
Seriously?? She clearly had, and probably has, a lot of money from her father, a man, which very much enabled her pretensions and ambitions. As this article noted elsewhere out loud. money makes a huge difference. Let's be clear that that is what it is mostly about with Ivanka Trump.

Poor Ivanka Trump is the daughter of a man who sees women as chattel. When he pretends to be proud of her business abilities, it's about as convincing as when he pretends to respect people of color. How could she be a feminist? She wasn't even brought up to be a human being.
7
I don't see how she's any different than any other wealthy white woman running a business, whether on the left or right.
The only thing I'm concerned about when it comes to Ivanka and feminism is the way her brothers and father make her into an example for all woman. Trump said that women should change careers if they are being sexually harassed and her brother said that she would never put up with that treatment. As the daughter of a billionaire she doesn't have to worry about these things. Trump is stuck in a bubble unwilling to see outside of it. hopefully this won't extend to policies that will undermine workplace harrassment laws.

My judgement of Ivanka Trump is that, like her father although not to the same extent, is that she exist only in what she believes is her image in the public's mind. She adopts some of the trapping of feminism to enhance her image as she will adopt anything else that is needed. She is the creation of her father and exist to enhance his image.
8
I agree with the authors of the comments I have read. For Ivanka to portray herself as a model for the average working mother is ludicrous. She is a chip off the old block and not only a chip off the old block but the favorite chip according to any pictures one sees of the family.
Donald can minimize dad's contribution to his own progress in life but it would have been a different life for him without dad's cash.
Both Trump and his daughter and perhaps all of his immediate family see themselves as entitled and not just entitled but supremely entitled. This is one of the reasons that Trump should not be sworn in as president because he hasn't a clue as to what a disciplined person running for office should be doing. He is totally undisciplined and supremely interested only in getting his own way, "my way or the highway."
He is so completely unqualified that he can't seem to realize that it'a not good for him to be in touch with the Russians. His pick, Flynn, has the gall to contact Russians by phone without anyone's permission unless it was Trump's .
Trump cant get it into his head that Putin, as head of Russia is our enemy. We are in conflict with his habit of invading independent countries and trying to make them submit to him by attacking them with tanks, etc. that he brings to their country. Donald Trump is so ignorant about the world and especially about Russia he doesn't know what any informed American knows.
It isn't too late.

Feminists don't change their religion as a condition precedent to marriage (or real estate merger), whatever the case may be. If the groom's parents demand it, you should check the groom for manhood as well.

How terribly unfair. You have no idea what feelings this woman had about the Jewish faith.

Her book, "The Trump Card," begins, "In business, as in life, nothing is ever handed to you. Yes, I’ve had the great good fortune to be born into a life of wealth and privilege, with a name to match. Yes, I’ve had every opportunity, every advantage. And yes, I’ve chosen to build my career on a foundation built by my father and grandfather.” Chosen. You chose to build, Ivanka? Picked it out like a new set of pumps or blush? Well, I chose too...Oh, it doesn't work that way?
The article here alludes to the fact that she's delusional about her privilege, but in her own words, you can see how deep the delusions run. It's unfortunate that she doesn't recognize her massive short-coming in this respect. It's also depressing for working women like me who'd rather have a more balanced marital relationship where husbands and wives take more equal roles, and fathers that are taken seriously in their roles as parents. Because whether or not people recognize it, the inequalities of families where the woman's domain is the home, is bad for men too.

One easy thing famous working moms such as Ivanka Trump (and Chelsea Clinton, and Marissa Mayer, etc.) could do to support all working moms is to publicize how much help they have at home. Hiding the nanny from public view creates the illusion that working moms can and should be able to do everything themselves.
2
Fake feminism, indeed. Her “brand” as much as her father’s “brand” only works because people buy into it, literally and figuratively. Why anyone would ever want a pair of shoes or some trinket or stay at some hotel because the Trump name is on it is beyond me. The vapid book she allegedly wrote was truly insulting to those of us who actually do real work for a living and strive every day to maintain our homes and families, rather than pawn our products off on others like used car salesmen. Will Trump voters ever figure out that these people care absolutely nothing about them and are only interested in enriching themselves, and now they have the highest office in the land in which to do it. How much damage will be done before someone with integrity can finally say “Our long national nightmare is over,” once again.
2
I once attended a planning meeting with Donald, and once with Ivanka. Both were rude, interrupting and dismissive of women attending the meeting, and polite and ingratiating towards the men at the table.
7
I wake up every morning since this debacle of an "election" with a nauseous heart-stopping realization that it wasn't a nightmare, but rather we are powerless at handing over our great American experiment to these people who could not care less about it or us. Horrifying.

Both Ivana Trump and Kellyanne Conway are fake examples of women holing power in the current Trump empire. Kellyanne is like a Nancy Reagan doting on her husband, deriving all her identity from him. The woman who built Trump Tower - an engineer who apparently was taken seriously - penned an op-ed nothing that Trump behaved very differently back when she worked with him.
1
For me, the biggest issue is not whether Ivanka is a feminist. It's the fact that, in the author's own words, "her soft-focus feminism is put to use covering for her father’s boorishness." She seems kind and thoughtful; yet she's helping empower a man who is often manipulative, impulsive and vindictive. There's a disconnect. It's hard to think about whether she's a feminist without more understanding about why, as a compassionate human being, she would support the kind of hate and divisiveness her father has promoted.
6
I'm sorry - is there only one kind of Feminism? I thought the goal was for women to be able to express who they are in as many ways as they want to do. Of course socio-economics impacts women's decisions - and of course the more money you have - the more options you have too. That's not fake feminism - That is life in the United States.
2
Feminism for women who are already secure and powerful. So much for the Trump family's staunch working class allure.
3
The apple does not fall from the tree. Like her father, she is much more con artist than business person. That became clear as she leveraged her new political status on TV interviews. She did not sport a $100K bracelet, which would have corresponded to to her ultra-wealth but be out of the reach of middle-class Trumpsters. She chose to flash a $10K bracelet, the metal value of which is probably worth less than $1K. Fools can buy the tacky bangle online. No doubt millions of dollars were reaped in a few minutes. I suspect that Dad found it "amazing" and nothing "disgraceful". It is a foreshadowing of the ransacking that is to come.
4
I really don't understand what the author expects of Ms. Trump. She is rich, smart, professionally successful, attractive, and appears to be a dedicated mother. Basically, she has it all. I thought that is what every woman wants.
None of the women I know want to be beholden to men for their careers and they certainly don't want to be leered at and groped by their fathers.
4
Ivanka may take some time off to settle the children into home and school but she will be spending equal time settling into the Whitehouse. I'm sure that if the ethics situation wasn't such a logistical nightmare she would'nt have given the family excuse, and would've gone straight into her role there. She, just like Jared, know the success of Trump's tenure will be down to them straightening any tracks for the train wreck that is Trump. I hope they don't succeed because it's all a lie.
5
As a secular liberal Jewish woman, I loathe ivanka trump, her husband and father. She has allowed Brannon, a white supremacist down the hall, when her husband claims to be orthodox. I consider jared madoff 2, and in time could be worse. Their family motto is to lie cheat and steal. The NYT has informed us of many of her father's endless conflicts of interests, Russian ties, and bankruptcies. Jared's father a convicted felon for tax evasion, and she herself has stolen ideas for apparel. They are all both vile and disgusting. We continue to hope for indictments, impeachment and eventual banishment form our collective conscious.
8
Regading any beautiful woman with brains and status typical challenges are simply helped due to wealth and comfort. She however cannot miss the fact that her father is far over the top crazy for his zany politics, paranoia and attitude regarding sex and women. My guess is that she cowers in the closet when she thinks about where she came from and where this fairy tale might take her and her children. Not normal, nor comfortable or pleasant when you're constantly explaining crazy to the world.
2
I don't understand why every woman still feels compelled to have children. We have the technology that gives us a choice - why don't we use it to its full potential? The world doesn't need more people. More of us need to choose not to reproduce. And you get to avoid the whole "who has to stay at home for the children" thing.
2
Ivanka was a democrat until a short while ago. Her ideas are progressive and generally liberal. Why so much criticism and hate? I for one hope that she can influence her father to make better decisions. Please, explain to me why her feminism is fake and Ms. Filipovics is real?
No matter how misogynistic the most despicable of men can be, it seems women quite fluidly surpass them. I know I may get in trouble here, but women did you ever think the reason you struggle so hard in many ways does not have to do with men, but yourselves? Personally, I find the willingness of women to tear each other down for apparently no good reason far more frequent than men's. The hostility in this essay, case in point.

So we're supposed to respect her for abandoning liberal values like fairness, equality and respect so she can cozy up to her leering, groping father for his money? I don't respect that kind of behavior in men or women.

I like to consider her of the princess class just as her brothers and husband are the royalty spawned by riches. As much as we hate to admit it there is a certain yearning in this nation for someone who can make all that's wrong right again. That requires a king, or better yet an emperor of unlimited power! TRUMP!
I don't know why the author considers Ivanka a fake feminist. She is as real as her father. She's enjoyed success not from boot strapping but from taking advantage of the advantageous circumstances she was born into. OK, so she doesn't reach down into the mud to pull up anyone else. Well... she never had to deal with mud so why would she? She is indeed an avatar of the privileged class and doesn't pretend to be anything else. Why on earth would anyone begrudge that? Poor little rich girl... If she weren't a Trump no one would have a thing to say about her.

Princess class says it all. Her family lives in a tower and as reported, staff in her father's resorts/hotels/buildings/golf courses must stand when she (as well as other family members) walk through.
She doesn't recycle and take out the garbage, do dishes, pick up dog poop, make the bed, do the laundry, figure out which bills to pay, vacuum, and more. What does she know of the life the rest of us live?

So do you similarly consider Chelsea Clinton a "princess" when she was paid $800K a year mainly so her network employer could have access to her Mom?
Amen. Well said.
Yahoo's Marissa Mayer built a nursery next to her office. Sheryl Sandberg has apologized for parts of "Lean In." Women voted for Trump(??). Now, Ivanka Trump wants a piece of the feminist voice. Ha! According to Vanity Fair she was raised by two nannies and a bodyguard. Her parents were not around much either.
Such a shame there isn't one clear concise voice women can embrace so as to move themselves forward both professionally and personally.
Current climate looks like same old stuff with a big helping of the 1950s.

Ms. Trump is living the life she was born into. On a whole she appears to be a fairly down to earth considering her wealth, privilege and winning the DNA jackpot when it comes to looks. Here is the reality the majority of mothers want to be be home with their young children. Women who make a lot of money can go back to work and hire an army of people to compensate for their absence. The average working woman ends up working for their employer, caring for children, taking care of the home etc.
As much as she may want to related to the average working woman she and others in her position can never really understand the reality of having to work for a living in order to provide for their families.

Ivanka Trump is the ultimate "princess" who has spent her entire life in a bubble of privilege and wealth. Let Americans never forget that Ivanka is imbued with her father's priorities and values.

Liberals are truly mentally ill, every hateful opinion and comment is full of envy, jealousy, bad intent, hatred, It's long list of bad traits.
TDS is real and it's devastating to people who are afflicted
I'm so ecstatic Mr Trump will be president next Friday.

How many nannies and "mothers' helpers" and cleaning staff and personal secretaries and drivers does Ivanka Trump have and how many of them are male? OK, maybe the driver.
Ivanka Trump went to her father's business school and then went to work for her father. Her achievements have never been truly tested by the real world as that's not where her father lives nor is it where she has worked her way up to a career of substance. Branding fashion is feminine version of branding hotels and golf courses. Hmmm, maybe her name should be the one on Trump ties, also made in China.

Shortly after the Obamas moved into the White House, Michelle Obama was asked how much harder her life had become. She responded that her life had become easier. Freed from the daily responsibilities of cooking, cleaning, and all the other tedious and stressful chores of managing a home, she said, made whatever responsibilities she had as First Lady seem pretty doable.
That's a woman who gets it.
That's a woman who gets it.

Ivanka's money, inherited or earned, obviously puts her way above the average American woman. Her 'advise' always rings hollow. The staff she employs to 'help' her is extensive wether work or at home. Her work/mothering balance is easy. Sure she did not have to work and chose to but lets get real, given Daddy's adoration she did not fight her way up the corporate ladder at Trump, Inc.
I do not denigrate her intelligence and skills. I applaud her advocating for some women's rights in the republican arena in which she finds herself.
If she is serious about drafting policies for the benefit of working women/families she should hire some people to help her who have experience in the world of the 99%.

1
Trump is married to his daughter and it is she who will be first Lady. Melania is simply a convenient arrangement, not a marriage. But in the end, Ivanka is a daddy's girl and for Trump the relationship is nepotism with overtones of incest. Expect nothing of substance from Ivanka because she truly belongs to Daddy.
2
What I will never forgive Ivanka for is supporting, promoting, and fighting for her father to be president.
She knows, better than anyone besides her brothers, that he is not capable of governing and is a threat to the safety of this country and the world.
Ivanka knows that Donald is narcissistic, angry, out of control, vindictive and racist.
She knows that he assaulted women, she knows he has no international experiences, no knowledge of the world, no understanding of how complex and dangerous this world is.
She knows he's impulsive and uneducated in terms of our national and international economy. She knows he's going to take healthcare away from millions of innocent people yet she, and her father, will never be without.
Ivanka knows that climate change is a threat, and yet she helps to nominate a man who thinks it's a hoax the Chinese danced on in and who chose for his cabinet a climate change denier.
She has her high class education, but she helped to put in office a man who chose a member of his cabinet who wants to gut public education.
Ivanka helped to elect an unhinged man who makes personal attacks on private citizens constantly and has now criticized our intelligence committee because he doesn't like what they have told him about the election.
Ivanka, your kids will be ashamed of you and your brothers.
You helped to elect a man who could well ruin this country.
You should have stuck to running casinos and making pretty dresses.

This editorial is filled with generalizations and inaccuracies. I actually couldn't finish the entire peace, it's so bad. Again, this author reveals how out of touch she is when she writes that most white woman who voted for Trump prefer the traditional stay at home-mom scenario.
Far, far from reality. This editorial is extraordinarily shallow, and shows no insight at all.
How dare the author question Inanka Trump's feminism? The whole point of feminism is that woman can be whatever they choose to be. Who is the author to define feminism and decide who gets to be "legitimately" feminist? Who cares about the "feminist" label anyway?
This author is too vapid to criticize anyone.

This opinion piece reminds me of all the old sayings about how women don't support other women. I don't see the author ripping Cheryl Sandberg, of "Lean In" fame. I guess a fair amount of politics has crept into the author's point of view. I would like to say that true feminism is allowing a woman the freedom to choose whatever she wants to do, within the limits of her financial status. So what if Ivanka and Cheryl have the money! If one is fake, so is the other. I think both are genuine women.
I don't know what the word feminism stands for anymore. Growing into a woman in the 60s we fought for the right to have a voice. Though I may not agree with the politics of Ivanka Trump, I will not try to shame her into silence because of her father.
1
Ivanka could care less about what you call her as long as her clothing line and business investments succeed. Like her other family members she is in business to make lots and lots of money. If her public persona is bad for her bottom line then she will adjust. To understand the Trumps always put their business interests and profitability first and stop thinking of them as role models. Favorite musical of the Trump family: Cabaret. Favorite song from that musical: "Money, Money". That sums up their tribe.
6
Perhaps instead of demonizing her, we should show compassion for a woman who seems to be the codependent overachieving daughter of a raging narcissist, the "golden child." Not an easy place to be, regardless of how much money he throws at her.
2
The term "high-achieving" should be reserved for individuals who weren't handed everything. No doubt Ivanka has nannies and plenty of help. She and her brothers, if they had an ounce of integrity, would be embarrassed by their father's conduct and would have distanced themselves from this raving lunatic.

Wow. Reading this, it becomes quite clear how American women have had such a hard time with the march in Washington. The author, whose name spell check refuses to let me name shreds Ms. Trump and others pile on. I have never felt so lucky to be a middle middle-class nobody. Does Ivanka get to answer these "charges" or is court adjourned? She is not her father nor her husband. She has of yet, no official office or position as they do. If I were her I would seriously think about staying home with the kids forever given the hostility shown here. Is this the point of feminism, to tear down and tear into? Good grief, will women never advance this way.
She's happy to ride her father's coattails and join him and her husband in fleecing the American public. She chose to do this, no one is forcing her.
Remember when Princess Diana had a conversation with Mother Theresa and wanted counsel on how to make her life meaningful?
Mother Theresa responded in words similar to this: "If you've become a princess, do all you can as a princess to make the world a better place....and she did. She worked with the international committee trying to rid the world of land mines, she was a part of so many important charities, she raised her sons to care for others. Also, she supported aids victims when it wasn't popular to do so.
I understand that some are born to privilege--I don't understand why so many Americans are enamored by people who have pursued success in accumulating wealth. How does that help to make America great?

Ivanka and your average Barbie Doll have too much in common for my tastes. Both are very pretty, with perfect hair, perfect faces and perfect figures. Both look good in clothes. Both live in fancy houses and drive expensive cars. Both have lived a privileged life. Both excel at their careers (and what high-powered job has Barbie not had?) Both may be very nice people, but neither of them is real.
5
My advice to the author is to avoid making generalizations about groups of people - particularly if that group is comprised of about 3.5 billion individuals.
3
Ivanka knows not of what she speaks. She has no idea what parenting is like for the bottom 99.99%.
It's easy to jet around the country when she can leave her three little children including a baby at home with 24/7 nannies. It's not like she has to ask her mother to come stay while she and Jared are otherwise occupied.
She can devote all of her time to the kids once home because grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, errands, etc are handled by an ever present paid staff and when hair stylists, manicurists, and personal trainers come to the house.
She has nothing to balance, no hard choices to make, no sacrifices to endure. And she and Jared avoid a yuuuge area of marital conflict - division of labor - because there is no labor.
She's no feminist and has no self respect. What woman in her right mind would support a father to whom she's nothing but a sexual fantasy.

Rich and well bred New York, New York feminism is about the same as Geneva, Switzerland based tax-dodge nonprofit environmentalism. They're both about preserving the order. I got nothing else to contribute. Except maybe that I've never found eastern european women attractive. They got this underlying Boris Yeltsin-y look that's kind of off putting. Maybe I've been around construction sites too much, where shyster developers parade around second/third/fourth wives and daughters to assuage trade union business associates going into negotiations.
3
Anyone - anyone - can be "successful" with the resources these young people have been given by their father. Their attributes, whether economic or physical, are not otherwise above average. We tend to give wealthy or famous people more credit for their circumstances than is due. If she is taking this opportunity to stop pretending to be an average American working mother with similar challenges then let's let her do so quietly.
4
Hillary Clinton was disliked mostly due to her ambition and her belief that she should be able to run for the highest office in the US. Even women decried her for her not being satisfied with being a NY state senator but wanting more. Mrs. Obama played the feminine role to support her illustrious husband and the public loves her for her diminished role. It is the same role Ivanka is playing. There is a high probability that it pleases the American public to see her playing the second fiddle to two men. Should she show more ambition? She would land herself in the same "unpopular women" bucket as Hillary Clinton. This ambiguity in terms of the role for women is a peculiar international problem for women all over the world. May be being single and not having children may be the drastic alternative to achieve what they want without being knocked around. The US like Saudi Arabia has a long way to go to accept women and not resent them for their ambitions.
2
The women I'm interested in are those who are doing the behind-the-cenes work that enables Ms. Trump to live her lifestyle. The cooks, the nannies, the make-up artists, the stylists, the house cleaners. How much money does she pay them? What kind of health insurance do they have? How much time do they have off? How do they raise their children? There is nothing in Ivanka Trump's lifestyle

We are about to be led by an Orange Pharaoh and his gilded family. Any attempt to use decency or logic is useless on the Pharaoh class.
She will serve to be a distraction as her father, the puppet of the American aristocracy and of course, of Putin. She is the mobster's daughter, strutting about town, in her finery and gold, as none dare tell her to her face how horrible her father is.
Watch as the heads fall in Washington, as the Orange Pharaoh cuts down any who might oppose or call a special committee to investigate him. Pharaoh's don't put up with that, and with his hand on the most massive military the world has ever seen, the mobster will rule with a bloody hand.

That Ivanka supports a proud misogynist - a father who speaks about his daughter in incestuous terms (and in front of her) and boasts about grabbing women's genitals - speaks volumes to me. One can write whatever they want about her family and professional life, but the only fact that matters is that she enables an unstable, bullying tyrant who demeans women. She is no feminist.
4
If Ivanka Trump is a model of modern feminism then feminism deserves to be dead. She is the model of a well-kept daughter/wife and her "working" life is no different from those equally well-healed women who do a lot of charity work - though the charity working women probably do far more good for the general population. Anyone with Ms. Trump's money can work - she has staff to feed, dress and drive her kids around. I am pretty certain she is not checking the grocery specials every week, planning & preparing meals and loading the washing machine!
2
Like father, like daughter. Equally greedy hypocrites. Equally adroit dissemblers.
Attractive, savvy and extremely well packaged. Yet while she may pretend, she is
no feminist. A woman of many faces and changing beliefs, none that can be trusted.

Before discussing Ms. Trump as the supposed embodiment of the ideal of the successful working mother, why don’t journalists find out how many maids, nannies, and other helpers really take care of her household and her children? To say nothing of the managers, assistants, and secretaries who help her with her business. Exactly in what way does her life resemble that of a middle-class or working-class mother?
3
Trump certainly sees his daughter in a different light than his wife. His wife was expected to stay home and take care of their son, while his daughter (who has three children) was on the campaign trail with him. His wife is going to stay in NYC so as to minimize stress for their son, yet his daughter is uprooting her three children (three of his grandchildren).
I'll also note that there is only an 11 year difference in age between his wife and daughter - not enough of a generation gap to account for their different views of a mother's role.

Does anybody really believe that Melania is being kept in Manhattan to put the academic interests of the 4th-grade boy first? When did Donald Trump ever put the interests of another family member ahead of his own agenda?
The "office of the first lady" is purportedly going to be changed to the "office of the first family." Donald Trump's older daughter, the one he "would be dating" if she weren't his kid, is going to be the de facto first lady. While he is not divorcing Melania, the current wife, he has in a sense said to her "you're fired" -- at least insofar as a public role is concerned.

While many, many things about this election are offensive, the idea that Trump's daughter has anything to teach me about feminism is vile.
Feminism has much to do with choice.
Wealth certainly increases one's choices.
But that doesn't make her a feminist. It's made her lucky, and completely out of touch with 99% of Americans--most of whom do not not have servants.

I predict that Ivanka will go underground before long. She will be the focus of so much hatred, so many death threats and perhaps attempts on her life that she will have to go into hiding. She can't even fly on a plane without being accosted. Paranoia will grow within the Trump clan. Paranoia will eat their souls. Watch and see.
1
Ivanka Trump's Instagram and Twitter feeds are full of airbrushed gender stereotypes. Through her pictures and captions she is peddling a glamorous yet an unattainable image of a woman entrepreneur. She is challenging nothing and simply selling aspiration. Any mother would know, children are very messy and don't readily sit to stare at a laptop! That is not how any kind of work is done. I want to see the invisible nannies, housekeepers, and stylists behind this social media marketing machine.
4
pmk - Angels and Insects. Alas, the insects had to sign non-disclosure forms if they wanted to get some crumbs from the Trump table.
This critique feels shallow to me, like the knocks on her for having plastic surgery to lose her chipmunk cheeks and bolster her chest dimensions. Yes, she's rich. Yes, she can - literally - afford to care for her children without the losses many women experience who make that choice. She is a product of privilege and uses it. And while her efforts to pose as a role model to help market her goods is cringe worthy, I don't see it rising to the level of column inches in the New York Times.
2
Feminism does mean the right and respect for “traditional motherhood”. It also means the respect and options for “ambitious” women. But only multi-millionaires have the luxury of either with children. It is not possible to “lean in” with children without significant assistance, albeit at minimal levels as compared to Ivanka. Ivanka is so dangerous because she hawks herself and products as “#women who work” to exploit women but she is oblivious. An example is her promoting paid maternity leave. It is in working women’s interest to be afforded paid family leave to include husbands.
1
This article is horribly written. To assume that Ivanka chose to be a stay-at-home mom or leave her business (etc etc) because she lacks dignity or "seems to require nothing of men" is unsubstantiated and thoughtless. Jill considers herself a feminist yet she is unfairly attacking a successful woman because she doesn't agree with the way she has prioritized her many responsibilities? How ironic. Read a book, Jill.
For the record, I consider myself a feminist and I am in no way a Trump supporter.
