Rumors of Hillary Clinton’s Comeback

Anyone wonder why people hate the media?

The "rumors" of Clinton as NYC mayor appeared on the Times. Then the Daily News. Then countless blogs and Twitter. And anyone with two ounces of common sense knows there's no chance Clinton runs for mayor. It's an absurd idea probably cooked up by a silly consultant (or a "journalist"!), and the media runs wild with it - basically enthusiastically conversing among themselves about something that's not going to happen. Conversations among teenagers are more substantial.
B Sharp (Cincinnati)
What a wonderful column Frank, after going through months of listening to rants of Donald Trump we need this dose of positivism.
I supported Madame Hillary in 2008, and also this year so why not ?
One thing we know Mrs. Clinton does not give up so easily , she lost to Trump and will dust herself up and serve the Country in some ways.

Go for it Hillary Clinton make my day !
Dahlian (NY)
If HRC would just squash BillyDB into political yellow matter custard, I'd eye her in a more forgiving light.

And once he loses the primary, Billy and his wife would have time -- to plan important policy summits, and perhaps even to walk aimlessly around streets in Queens, pretending to hand out "Stronger Again" flyers for her. As long as they stay away from NYC business and tourist centers, they won't be annoyed by the panhandler brigades arriving in midtown for the day's cardboard hustle.

Or not. BillyDB might decide to just lay low, dreaming up meaningless "Vision" slogans for the unemployed data boys in Brooklyn to market test until his next lucky break comes along via an endorsement from The Times.

We should have Quinn and Sanders. We got Billy and Donald. Thanks a lot, NYT.
Know (NYC)
She will give New York City a Republican mayor, after being labeled power hungry for pulling the rug out from under her former intern turned mayor feet and destroying his chances. The Clintons and Trump go way back...either way she is an asset to Donald when DeBlasio is NOT. By observation she won primary states being lesser of two evils, 2016 had lowest voter turn out in 20 years.
Mitchell (Oakland, CA)
"No one ever mistook Hillary for a forest nymph"? I knew we'd one day get the benefit of Bruni's "queer eye." Good one, Frank!
Heysus (<br/>)
Excellent! I love every single idea. Go for it!
Jeanine (Massachusetts)
Nooooo. Please go away, Hilary. You lost twice. Move over and let some new blood in please.
Tim (Wmsbg)
And if somehow her inevitability allowed her to lose again? It might be like Nixon running for governor of California after losing the presidency to JFK in 1960. To paraphrase Millhouse, "You won't have Hillary Clinton to kick around anymore..."
Kimiko (Orlando, FL)
I wonder if Hillary has ever seen the movie Beau James, starring Bob Hope as New York City Mayor Jimmy Walker. When he leaves office under a cloud of scandal that has dashed his chances of ever becoming president, he says, "Who wants to be president when you can be mayor of New York?"
Lou (Rego Park)
Please Mr. Bruni, don't even kid about this. Andrew Cuomo will have a heart attack if someone that he can't usurp gets elected in New York.
Gwbear (Florida)
For SHAME, Sir! This is underhanded political theatre at best, at Clinton's and Democrats' expense!

The GOTP "rules" just resurrected an old law that will allow lawmakers to fire individual government workers...potentially turning every government position into a Right Wing "Loyalty" test for every federal position in the country. It's tyrannical at best, and potentially a chance for vengeance, or political cronyism on a vast scale.

Meanwhile, Trump is actively undercutting the entite National Security Community, while entirely backtracking on every campaign promise that got him elected!

Is THIS the best you can come up with?

Of course, even now, Liberals, with lots of Trolling from Trump supporters, are savaging Clinton mercilessly in the comments to this article! How Pathetic and Clueless can things get? Are people still convinced that all the Right Wing Lies and Hype about Clinton were real? Is Clinton that much of a Criminal to you?

If you still think Clinton is a criminal, or a faithless opportunistic elitist - if you think she is the biggest problem the Left, or the nation, could have, then you don't know what problems are! Give it a few months. I guess the Left really did deserve to lose this last election. There is nobody so hopeless as those who refuse to learn that they are being had, or don't know what their real emergency priorities are.

With pathetic OpEds like this, maybe it's time to cancel my NYT subscription: the Paper of Reason is losing its mind.
Hillary. (USA)
This would be hilarious. New York "deserves" Clinton.
EEE (1104)
No! She's far too important to be mayor of NYC. When the time is right she will have her impact.
A. Wiggins (San Antonio, Texas)
UGH! Clintons and Bushes..corrupt, corrupt and corrupt. No more..please! As I lifelong Texas voting Democrat and Republican sometimes, I made a promise to myself 2 years ago: No more Clintons or Bushes. They both proved to be white trash Presidents with lies and more lies. No one posting here can deny both families lied their way through their terms. I am glad they are both gone. Good riddance Hillary and Jeb.
adara614 (North Coast)
Frank: I think you are underestimating her unique ability to irritate people and lose winnable elections

2008 and 2016 come to mind.
George (Oyster Bay, NY)
On a similar vine, I was thinking this morning that President Obama should move to Kentucky in three years, run against and beat Mitch McConnell and after being sworn in as the Senator from KY resign. Poetic justice.
Nora (<br/>)
Time for the Clintons to retire. The "leaders" of the Democratic party, need to retire as well. All of you are killing our party. As a result, our country is going to have to suffer through Trump, the buffoon.Stop trying to be the "new" Republican Party. Get back to your base. Listen to the young Democrats, and the boomers. Help the working, and middle class. Drop Wall Street.I am not holding my breath.Money talks.
Lin (Holland, MA)
Why so quick to give up? HRC lost the Presidential race in a tampered election. She is a powerful, positive, political voice that this world, this country, and role as New York mayor needs, if that is her choosing. This may not be where she chooses to spend her energy, but this country would benefit from her intelligence and level-headedness in any way political avenue she chooses. Hillary Clinton is not ready to be put out to pasture. She is the strongest force I know of to stand up against political bullies.
Pajaritomt (New Mexico)
Great fantasy. She would be an idiot to rn, but I would be delighted if she became mayor of NYC. I hope Hillary spends her time, relaxing, hiking, and playing with her grandchildren, but I bet she will dedicate the rest of her life to helping others through The Clinton Foundation.
Now she can make all the speaking engagements she wants and can take money from anyone for doing so. She can do anything she wants and with the respect of everyone but Commie-Pinko Trump and his Russian buddies.
And when things go bad for Trump, as they no doubt will, she can make speeches saying "I told you so."
Sarah (Santa Rosa Ca)
We need influential women to help steer our country in a positive direction. Making the world better for all should be the mantra. This is an amusing piece but I think now we should focus all of our energy on the high ground. Let us defeat Trump at the local level and if Hillary could help; more power to her.
Dr pol (Baltimore, MD)
One thing is definite, New York City has declined over the last 2 years.
I go to the city 1/yr for a major conference. I stay near Central Park, go to at least 2 shows, and have multiple dinners at great restaurants.
First thing I noticed, the streets are covered with litter. Second, we were accosted everywhere by homeless folks. It reminded me of the late 80's.
It is a shame.
Majortrout (Montreal)
Will Mrs. Clinton just ride away quietly into the sunset!
She had her big chance as the "President in Waiting" and blew it,what with the DNC biased against and having plotted against Mr. Sanders and all for Hillary.
Let sleeping dogs lay.
Enough already!
Bos (Boston)
Only in New York! The Koch Cuomo duo would pale by comparison
proffexpert (Los Angeles)
We want Hillary to be Governor of California after Jerry Brown retires. Please, Hillary, think it over.
ACJ (Chicago)
Only in NY could this scenario work...Now, having said that, I would hope that Sec. Clinton embraces retirement, which, if you have the money, and grandchildren, and interests you were unable to pursue when working, is a wonderful time in your life....
Barbyr (Northern Illinois)
Chicago needs a new mayor too, but PLEASE not another recycled Obama castaway. Enough with the Clintons! As much as I like admire her, she is poison in the well for the rest of eternity.
FromLA (Los Angeles)
I voted for Hillary too. But enough already.
MAO (Oregon)
I would rather that she be appointed to the Supreme Court, if only for a year.
Gerald Gould (Indianapolis)
Mayor of a major City has to show up to work everyday, and deal with all the minutia. I don't think she has the energy or the stomach to deal with things at such a "low" level where you are not isolated from the people.
BG (USA)
We may want to start putting names down of people who would run for the presidency in 2020, on the Democratic side.. I think the Trump/Pence ticket will have done enough "diverting" by then at a moment where we need to have a good cruising speed to go back to the head of the pack, before it is too late.
Messages need to be sent to the rest of the world that the clowns will be out in 4 years and adults will take over.
We have heard enough about the so-called Republican or Trumpians quarters
and rather put them in our rearview mirror.
I do not hear the name of former governor Martin O'Malley mentioned often and I wonder why? I am sure there are other worthy candidates who need to come to the fore now.
There is a fair amount of UNNEEDED post-mortem analysis done these days to try to explain the Trumpian problem.
Isn't one of the major problem the presence of money in politics? Reforming that part as a first item on the agenda is a sure way to start eliminating maggots from seeking positions of authority.
We need to move forward, deliver blows to the riffraff about to be in place by 2018 at the Congress level and consolidate the effort by 2020 at the presidential level.
The central ideas of the agenda need to start emerging now and let us stop worrying about how we are going to fair in a Twitter world. There is no need for us to try to push the Trumpian stack of cards. it will fall under its own weight.
Let us get on with the global ideas that will govern the 21st century.
Edward (Canada)
Secretary Clinton is finished and she needs to accept that. The Democratic 'Old Guard' failed miserably in the last election and the US--and yes, the rest of the world--will pay the price. The Party needs, fresh (read: NOT neo liberal) ideas. It needs the excitement and energy of new faces.
Oakwood (New York)
Darkly, this is more than just a NYT fantasy. It is part of a two decade long obsessive and unhealthy love affair with anything Clinton. Unfortunately, it is also an accurate portrayal of the personal revenge politics and enemies lists that were the other part of the Clinton years.
I don't doubt that Hillary would love to run. She has an all consuming need for power and is painfully aware that 'donors' to the Clinton foundation have totally dried up.
But this is not good for either the Democratic party or the City. Yes, DeBlasio is a disaster. But his replacement should be a rising star of the Party, not a two time loser from the distant past.
DK (NJ)
Okay, a little humor. I guess we need it from time to time. But the financial hole Obama had to climb out to save the economy, will be nothing to grave the nation will have to climb out of in four years or less.
will (denver)
If someone could just eliminate the homeless New York would be so much better off.
michaelslevinson (St Petersburg, Florida)
Hillary as forest nymph? Excellent! One thing can be said about both of the two-party presidential candidates—for good reason, they are equally despised.

http://michaelslevinson.com
Kate Breuil (Paris)
Please start a petition to get her to do it. If enough people are enthusiastic, it might just work.
Jennifer Stewart (NY)
Brilliant, Mr. Bruni. To everybody who's saying it's time to move on, it's never going to be time for me. I can't imagine Hillary Clinton will run, but if she did, I'd yell yes, yes, yes! It would be such a treat to see her in the news, and read about her, and there's the minor point that she'd be brilliant.
MyThreeCents (San Francisco)
This is the message the Democrats should take away:

"it's time for her and us to move on."

The future of the Democratic Party does not lie with Hillary Clinton. Maybe Chelsea some day, but that's another matter. Time for Hillary and Bill to hang up their spurs. There are plenty of other talented young Democrats out there -- time to elevate them and deep-six the Clintons, Biden, Pelosi et al. They are all from a previous generation -- that was then; this is now.
Lydia B (New Orleans)
I'd actually prefer to see her as Governor of New York or, at the very least, Attorney General of the state. She could also head a commission to ensure affordable housing is available in adequate quantities in all the municipalities, boroughs, etc, wherever housing needs are critical.

Clinton is a leader who can get things done right.
Joan C (NYC)
I always love finger-wagging declarations of when someone should retire to protect their legacy. A Roger Federer or Serena Williams don't win as reliably as they used to, but they are among the greatest athletes in the history of sport. An athlete or the politician or ordinary people live in present and it's hard, and kind of sad, to live on past accomplishments or remain mired in past failures. So what if Hillary had her sights set on a bigger role than Mayor of the City of New York?Being the mayor of our great city hardly a demotion to the minor leagues. It's time to stop settling for mediocre men and celebrate the smart and accomplished women among us. No one who has accomplished anything is, as far as I know, without baggage or mistakes.

So run, Hillary, run. I would sign up instantly to work for your campaign.
JA (CA)
This is so not funny. Maybe you New Yorkers can stomach all these stiffs year-in and year-out, but if there was any indication that the country is sick and tired of these 2 interlopers (popular vote notwithstanding), this election was it.

A candidate who wastes time in the Hamptons and at the faux-liberal Hollywood elite hob-nobbing and raising money, rather than hitting the campaign trail in Eau Claire and Eagle River and Minnetonka and Petosky, and a host of other northern midwestern enclaves - what on earth was she thinking?

No, I would advise you mournful New Yorkers to find new blood, someone who represents all of you, not just the tired-faux liberals on your own avenues and co-ops. Or else, you will find yourself under the bureaucratic mess of John Podesta, Donna Brazile, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, that nitwit woman who was married to Anthony Weiner (jeeeze, where do they find these pinheads?), Paul Begala, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and that dotty husband of hers himself, ol' man Bill.

Send them back to Arkansas, where they can craft more center-right fantasies for Democrats. We are desperate for the leadership of the progressive their machine schieved out of leadership. Chuck Schumer, are you listening???
MyThreeCents (San Francisco)
Don't rule Hillary out. Many of us thought she was toast after the 2008 campaign -- wrong!

In the "first debate" SNL skit, Kate McKinnon (playing HRC) joked, convincingly, that we had to elect Hillary or else she'd just run again and again and again until we do. I laughed, but McKinnon may be right. Hillary may just keep on running till the day she drops dead.
mike (manhattan)
MyThreeCents,

She was toast after 2008. Burnt toast from stale bread that we didn't have the good sense to throw out. Instead we convinced ourselves we could eat it and that our fellow citizens would love it too.

I love San Francisco and loved the many months I've lived there (to escape east coast summers). I love that Hilary received 85% of the vote there (although I think that a unction of Trump too). But America is not SF. Some of arguments about political correctness that I've heard there would be laughed at or worse nauseating in the Mid-west.
sherm (lee ny)
Frank, have you talked to the theater people about making this Clinton mayor thing into a musical comedy? This column is enough to get the creative juices flowing. Kate McKinnon, Alec Baldwin...
Karen L. (Illinois)
Love the idea, but hey....Hillary is a born and bred Illini first. We really could use her to clean up Illinois. I'm thinking governor. Please?!
Phillip Vasels (USA)
Frank, you're right. Let's think about this...
PapaDan (Pleasanton, California)
Frank! Thanks for the comic relief; but I agree with others who say that Hillary has earned a rest from ALL THAT. And for those who are attracted to the revenge angle? His own stupidity and buffoonery should cause more than enough embarrassment to satisfy those who seek it.
Moira from Holbrook (Long Island, NY)
Some people never know when to leave the party...Hillary, you're embarrassing yourself.
MyThreeCents (San Francisco)
To Hillary's credit, she hasn't commented on these proposals that she continue in politics. She may have no interest whatsoever in running again.

Still, an explicit confirmation would be nice.
chris Gilbert (brewster)
I'd prefer Sanders. Maybe he will move back to his native Brooklyn. He's more NYC than Clinton.
Occupy Government (Oakland)
just remember, people. Voters chose Barabbas. that didn't last.
Lorraine (Schenectady NY)
Oh thank you. A wonderful fantasy, hilarious, so fun to read. And entertain the thought! We can dream.. and hope? At this point, nothing seems too far fetched.
Mary (Nova Scotia Canada)
The best ...the best. Spread this one around. So good. I couldn't and decided
to read a column or two. Now I'm so
phyced I'll never get to sleep tonight.
Thanks.ML
CK (Rye)
Crazy! DeBalasio is the more talented politician, and Clinton is a political disease. I imagine one gets certain perks writing fawning stories like this, it's a pitiful lowering of journalistic/editorial standards.
ANGEL XIX (Extraterrestrial)
Hill No!
That mean old ghost of Christmas past just left everyone with a lump of coal fot the next four years. If it were not for the (Arkansas) Clinton machine and their brainwashed groupie club you would be swooning over Elizabeth Warren's cabinet choices today. Yes, you would. Feel bad. Or at least cheering on a real New Yorker Bernie Sander's as the new President Elect. Yes, you would. Feel Bern.
And don't even think about Chelsea. Thanks but no thank you. You blew it scrooge.Go do something nice - for a change.
Mary Ann White (Cambridge Springs PA)
Good grief! Let her rest in peace.
TonyB (NJ)
Give it up Hillary. You and Nancy Pelosi are done and are holding the next generation of democrats back. Retire gracefully.
Grant (Boston)
Savonarola or Hilary Clinton: Tweedle-dum or Tweedle-dee, hmmm? Bruni and Charles Blow are now leaders of the Clinton Fan Club and set to host Clintonmania, a group think debauchery festival in Central Park on January 21. Tickets are on sale at the NY Times Office in Manhattan. Free entertainment by the Rockettes, and a guest appearance by Hollywood Squares host Alec Baldwin. Placards and marching instruction provided at the event. No need to bring a date; you will find your match at the park.
Carlo (nyc)
"She’s a creature of pavement, pantsuits and politics. Shouldn’t she get back to all three?"

No. No, she shouldn't.
Catmom12 (Pasadena CA)
Love it! A high-visibility post without all the ulcers and headaches of the Presidency. You go, girl! (I will still be a strong supporter, whether or not you run, but it would be fun.)
MA (NYC)
Strange Bruni and Chozick both have articles in NYT this weekend about this subject. However, I enjoy this one more because as a New Yorker, I share some of Frank's fantasies on what she would do and how much we would enjoy the daily show - better than reality TV.
Otto (Rust Belt)
I'll vote for her, and I don't even live in NY. Does that matter anymore?
Abed (California)
Ahh, finally some great humor! Best political piece I've had the pleasure to read, truth or not.
marian passidomo (NY)
I always love your writing and "from your pen to God's ear." As we say in NYC, it should only happen.
Wordsworth from Wadsworth (Mesa, Arizona)
"No one ever mistook her for a forest nymph."

No, not Vladimir Nabokov, nor Bill Clinton.
Jim (Kansas)
It's a fun fantasy, but studies of human behavior show that past is prologue. Every move HRC has made in her life has been consistent and strategic, and resulted in the Clintons having nearly a quarter of a billion dollars in their bank account from their "public service." There's no money to be made in the described plan. It's a shame that they've operated this way, because she'd probably be our President-elect, and a great POTUS, if she didn't have this tendency.
NYT Reader (Virginia)
I think it good if Hillary becomes the NYC mayor.
Angry Bird (New York)
Ultimately, this is HRC's decision to make. She will be good for New York (as mayor), New York State (as governor), as President of the USA. She is qualified, but flawed, yet clear in her altruistic goals.
I will support her anytime, instead of the odious President-elect and his disgusting, selfish family.
ADN (New York, NY)
Would she win?

Let's get real. Her long-standing enemies just engineered a nonviolent coup d'état to deny her the presidency. They would come after her if she ran for the local school board. They haven't let up for 20 years and they're not going to let up now. It's not like we don't know what they're capable of.
Marshall Auerback (New York, NY)
If she ran, it would clearly show that loyalty to the Clintons only goes one-way. De Blasio loyally supported HRC. Running against him would be quite the repayment of that fidelity.
trueblue (KY)
personally believe she is enjoying being a grandmother - and taking care of the foundation - and writing her memoirs. She doesn't need any thing else and has all she wants. The country needed her and it is their loss.
MWnyc (NYC)
"But to live here, as I do, is to notice deteriorations since the end of Mike Bloomberg’s administration: public spaces that seem dirtier, subways that feel more packed, an apparent rise in the number of homeless people on the streets."

I see Bruni's point, but - as he knows, and to the city's sorrow - the mayor does not control the subways. The MTA is controlled by the governor.
Steve C (Bowie, MD)
Frank, you need to face it: the Democratic Party was taught a hard lesson in its efforts to get Mrs. Clinton elected. The best thing for her to do is become an advisor to the DNC, she has much to share but another run for any office is not in the best interest of the DP. I voted for her and America was taken to task. And I learned!

We need youth and we need to bring in different and updated points of appeal. We need to learn from our misguided strategy and do so very soon.
RMC (NYC)
The Republican Party will stick with Trump through the midterm elections, so that they will not lose the votes of the Trump mob. The they'll impeach him. Hillary can run against Pence in 2020.
Marc Sivam (San Jose, CA)
This commentary would be funny if it weren't so sad and pathetic. This is yet another poorly-concealed display of the bitterness over DJT's win, and the resulting animal instinct for vengeance from liberals like this commentator. Sad, despicable and pathetic.

If HRC were to run, she's again make the monumental error of overestimating her likelihood of wining. New Yorkers - ever cynical of losers - would roll their eyes at this old retread, desperate for power, trying to sell them her broken wares all over again.
KSterling (Richmond, VA)
Hillary is more than a has-been. She's a liar and a cheat who will sell NYC assets to the Russians just the way she sold America's assets to them. But hey - if that's what melts your butter, have at it. I don't think it will be nearly as fun as you think, once the Clintons have milked NYC for all it can give them.
Jason Murray (New York, New York)
Wow, people are so petty in these comments. I'm not surprised, though. Hillary is the only woman with the grit and drive to run for important offices while Americans sit behind their computer screens and judge her for her ambition. She'd make a great mayor, and you know it.
Rickey Holtsclaw (Uniontown, ArkansasI)
Reminiscent of that stubborn wart that just won't go away!
C welles (Me)
Yes, imagine the trump motorcade getting a late start
ccguy (SoCal)
Hillary is a doer. She would do what she did in the Senate: work across the aisle to get things done. Earn respect from the other side. Hillary for mayor.
Pat Boice (Idaho Falls, ID)
I'm a Bernie primary voter who voted for Hillary in the general - no other choice!
She is an admirable woman, but frankly, it is time for the Clintons to concentrate on their Foundation and leave the political world for less worn-out names.
gene (seattle)
Democrats fantasizing about Crooked Hillary further abusing her official powers? Way to keep it classy, Democrats. Also, way to elect Trump again.
jay (Lake Charles, La.)
Mrs Clinton should be an op ed writer or a columnist to help with "fact-checking" and providing an authoritative voice against any misleading, unconstitutional or unpatriotic policies, acts, and plans by either party.

She owes it to the country and to herself to be that voice of reason and sanity. She needs to redeem herself. She should resign from the Democratic Party for the good of the party and to protect her legacy. This may be the most patriotic thing to do for US. If she and Obama can launch joint attacks against the nightmares to come, maybe there is hope!
Sharon Villines (Washington DC)
I don't think it is a given that mayor of New York City is a come down from the Presidency. In the same way that the largest and most important city in a state is not the seat of government, the mayor of the world's leading city could have more power and influence and none of the restraints of officialdom.
SCReader (SC)
Oh, for heaven's sake! Elections of public officials (national or local) are not about anyone's having fun or getting revenge.

Both the public and public officials badly need to get serious about elections and the grave consequences they can have.

If only the two major political parties had thought to prevent turning the campaign season into yet another circus - with Hillary Clinton doing her usual balancing act on the Democratic high wire and surly clowns riding worn-out Republican elephants - Americans might have had the opportunity to cast meaningful votes. And America might be awaiting the inauguration of a worthy president.
SR (New York)
Better than the Energizer Bunny!
sdw (Cleveland)
Here’s a better idea than Mayor Clinton. If one thing became clear from the presidential election, it was the fact that the Clinton campaign (and, before that, the Democratic National Committee) did not venture effectively into the nation’s hinterland to hold meet-and-greet sessions with working-class voters.

Hillary Clinton is now the “elder stateswoman” of the Democratic Party. She should be provided with a staff, funding and a private plane to travel about and re-connect with people who should be natural Democratic voters.

Forget the fancy fund-raising soirees with the big donors in California and New York. Other people – particularly those with their eyes on the 2020 prize -- will gladly handle that duty.
Ralph (SF)
This is a fun romp and brought me many chuckles. However, I blame Hillary for losing the election by not standing up to Trump, letting him get away with calling her crooked Hillary, not campaigning in the right places, and running a truly poor campaign. I think she should step away from public service, at least in elected positions. I truly question her leadership abilities and talent.
ChrisW (USA)
Not doing anywhere near as many public events as she did, making it clear that her time was reserved for rich people who give her money, showing everybody with a security clearance that the laws applying to them didn't apply to her, pretending to be completely healthy and then giving several different stories about her public collapse, which was only public because one citizen was reasonably close and holding a camera. She also thinks marriage between a man and a woman is the bedrock of Western Civilization, so it's not clear why Democrats ever permitted her to run.
Kate De Braose (Roswell, NM)
Where are all the loyal citizens in this latest mess of Trump's making?
I always thought it absurd that a person like him, who would be thrown out of any employment agency, could actually gain any responsible job.
MsPea (Seattle)
Ms. Clinton is one tough cookie, but it's hard to believe she's tough enough to take on running for mayor of NYC. Or, running for anything, to be honest. The animosity felt toward her is evident in these comments. All the attempts of her supporters and sympathetic media cannot erase the stain of corruption that swirls around her-and I'm speaking as a fan of hers. Even though her dealings and behavior have been repeatedly investigated over the years, the general understanding remains that she could not have gotten where she did without (A) being involved in some underhanded schemes, or (B) because of her husband. Regardless of the ethical failings of the Trump family that are slowly being revealed as unprecedented, the Clinton's continue to be viewed as a corrupt entity. Ms. Clinton has withstood a lot in both her public and private life and seems to have remained strong, but why she'd ever agree to endure even more is a mystery. I admire her, but I hope she'll just continue to work for causes important to her and not seek further office.
James Thornburgh (San Diego, CA)
Fun to think about. Also fun to imagine all the ways to bamboozle Trump in his Tower. Problem is, that sounds like reverse Chris Christie and his bridge revenge. Get even? That sort of political ping pong is truly destructive, petty and childish. We all need leaders who are above that behavior. Good luck with that. It really is time to move on and look for new and vigorous voices and people of action to support a truly progressive agenda. Not at all sure Clinton, Cuomo, Schumer, et. al. are the best choices. We'd best start looking now, not next weekend.
Kate De Braose (Roswell, NM)
I'm worried that Trump might think he could sell Americans as slaves to every other nation in the world.
Perhaps the Nation's intelligence services should investigate that?
Eileen (Long Island, NY)
I admire Hillary Clinton immensely but NYC mayor is totally beneath her. NY Governor makes much more sense -- our state needs some broad restructuring and she would have the smarts and willpower to get it done. But, I think her biggest contribution going forward would be to fundraise like mad for Emily's List so we can fund and get elected MANY Female Democratic senators and representatives (look how Hillary helped Maggie Hassan over Kelly Ayote). Women should represent at least 50% of our representatives. Then we will finally see collaborative government in action. And Hillary would inspire a lot of women to financially support that cause.
ChrisW (USA)
Why not Senator? Then she can go back to what she's really qualified for, renaming post offices and courthouses.
Fern (Home)
Please no. We've seen how she can lose to an opponent whose defeat was widely assumed. Imagine who could successfully run against her. Please Hillary stop before you unleash King Kong on NY.
adchick22 (Hooterville)
As always, beautifully written, Mr. Bruni. I loved this. Hillary hopefully has a lot left in her-if she decides to be Mayor of New York, I might move there. :)
drspock (New York)
You've got to be kidding. While there's obvious light humor here, there are some that actually think that this is a good idea. I think we've had enough of the Clinton political royalty.

She'll get another multi-million dollar book deal and a few more six figure speaking engagements and ride off into there sunset. If she doesn't then she doesn't know the difference between serving the public and serving the ego.
observer (PA)
I am reading this piece and wondering whether it's simply a bit of fun or whether it is symptomatic of those still in denial about the reasons for Democrats doing so badly in November. There is little hope for the Dems going forward if they don't face reality;HRC has always been damaged goods; deep character flaws, lack of authenticity ,coupled with Clinton"coat tail" issues. It's time to realize these "trump" experience, smarts and education.
Barbara Striden (Brattleboro, VT)
I realized while reading this piece that one of the reasons Clinton lost to the oddly-tinted compilation of psychiatric symptoms was simple "Clinton fatigue", a sort of exhaustion and dread arising from the sense of crisis that frequently surrounds the Clintons. And I'm embarrassed to say that much of this isn't even her fault; for some reason, her very existence drives Republicans so crazy that they feel compelled to grab onto anything they can get their hands on to absolutely destroy her. And her husband can't seem to help undermining her as well. The prospect of Round 973 of the "Clinton Wars" is dispiriting. Which I suppose is one goal of the GOP's strategy. Awful.
diane in michigan (michigan)
Isn't her fault? The authenticity of the leaked email content has never been questioned - only how and when the emails came out.
KathyW (NY)
Of course Republicans can't stand her. She's a smart, powerful woman, a cardinal sin to fanatical Republicans. They can't stand her any more than they could stand that black man in their very White house. To be anything other than white and male is unacceptable to far too much of the Republican party.
Mary Williams (Portland Oregon)
My question is in which state should Obama run for senate? He is young. We still need him.
PNRN (<br/>)
"The city’s Mexican Day Parade would be rerouted, from Madison Avenue over to Fifth, right past Trump Tower. " For that alone, I'd vote for her!"
But seriously, if Hillary hasn't burned out her desire to serve during this thankless past 2 years, she should run. Bloomberg showed what an intelligent, competent mayor could do for an enormous population. Mayor of NYC would be no shame, it would be an honorable way to complete her career.
But as someone suggested below, maybe she should hold out for governor?
heinrich zwahlen (brooklyn)
Yes she could do also many shady things and most of all she could fill her coffers some more, the way she did as foreign secretary.
Bash (Philadelphia, Pa.)
People are people are now busy blaming the Russians for revealing things about the Clintons, the DNC and their campaign for the White Hoise. Other than it is a foreign country being blamed for the release of embarrassing materials, how is this much different than the release of the edited Jeremiah Wright tapes in 2008, or the publication of Obama's remarks about guns and Bibles, allegedly by the Clinton people. Parties did up dirt on each other. The trick is to try not to have too much for them to dig up.

The US has interfered in foreign elections with far more deadly methods than releasing embarrassing news about the candidates or elected officials. It is still up to the voter to make up his own mind about a candidate, and it is up to the media to do some real investigation and find out what is going on, not decide that a candidate has won before the primaries even begin. In 2106 it seems that some chickens at least came home to roost.
ex-virginian3 (NYC)
Just go away. The whole topic smacks of desperation. Her people are doing her a disservice and ruining whatever reputation she might have left.
Steve (Waterloo, IL)
Yikes! In terms of pols I'd like to be shed of, she comes in a close second to DT.
George (Treasure Coast)
Good God! She like a scene out of poltergist "They're baacccck!". The Clinton's desire for power kniows no boundaries and no shame. She lost to a community activist and a reality TV star. The Clintons should really go away, far, far away.
Ted (S. Brunswick, NJ)
Three cheers for this article! Liberals have no sense of humor. Oh, did I say say something that offended them? Chest la vie!
michaeltide (Bothell, WA)
Close, but no cigar.
Bill (Menlo Park, CA)
Frank, you always come up with something clever, that few have thought of, and that has potentially dramatic repercussions. I personally don't like Hillary, but we all need a sense of humor. If it were to happen, it could be fascinating as you suggest. Keep it up!
Lisa (Cameron park)
Hillary can't have a come back from a place she never arrived. She would have had to have a time and place where she was relevant to have a comeback.
Miriam (Long Island)
"In the presidential election, 79 percent of New Yorkers voted for her [Clinton] over Trump." The rest of the country is about to find about what New Yorkers already know about Trump; there is no there there. He is an empty suit with a big mouth.
Mike BoMa (Virginia)
Two events will let us know if a Clinton mayoral run is in the works: a Trump tweet barrage and a new Broadway play, "Clinton." It could happen, as Judy Tenuta would say.
MyThreeCents (San Francisco)
I understand Bruni is just kidding, but I wouldn't rule out a "Return of Hillary." How many of us thought she was dead and buried after the 2008 election?
JRS (RTP)
After she and Bill ruined the Democratic Party, Hillary should 'get thee to a nunnery' for shame on thee for ruining our future. And Bill, old fool, should retire to a farm, perhaps in Montana and grow sheep in cattle country.
A.J. (France)
I prefer H. Abedin for mayor.
Greg (Chicago, Il)
Perfect, Hillary needs yet another thing to loose.
KCS (Falls Church, VA, USA)
Hillary does not have to run for mayor of NY to have Trump's properties closely inspected for code violations when we all know that their owner is a breathing, walking Uncoded Violator, to begin with. Come to think of it, the mayor of DC may also want to give a second, hard look to Trump Hotel kitchens lest cockroaches and rats and rodents from his properties start invading the neighborhood - all the way to the Capitol Hill cafes.

However, on a serious note, I propose HRC's name for Nobel Peace Prize for her life long service to the cause of women, children and poor families, starting at the age of her early 20s. Even if did not capture the presidency, she's broken glass cielings in a highly misogynistic society where only a few years ago sports coaches and religious gurus were admonishing women to obey their husbands or face corporeal punishment.
Ryan Wei (Hong Kong)
Sounds like the petty, vindictive hate the left accuses others of.

Frank may be fantasizing, but now that Trump has the actual power, perhaps he should drive it down the egalitarian's throats by doing exactly what Frank suggests. Starting by gutting the media, then academia.

Hillary would be a better mayor than de Blasio, though. Tells you something about the left, doesn't it?
JerryD (HuntingtonNY)
It's not funny anymore
CR Diddle (Big D)
I realize this was written as a joke but it would be a bigger laugh if from his pot holed unplowed building he let the justice department finish the investigation into H's handling of classified information. Or in different terms ... I'll see your citations and raise you a treason convivtion.
Sue Mee (Hartford)
Dream on. She will never run and will never be mayor. She's never lived in NYC and barely knows the city nor its people. I can't imagine her fielding complaints from residents about snow removal and garbage pick up. So beneath her. Besides, it's a hard job and I don't think she physically can do it.
SteveRR (CA)
Because totally failing three times in never enough.
Bobbie Goeden (<br/>)
If only (sigh).
PKLogan (Anchorage)
Obviously Hillary needs to do something with all those fireworks. And the Javits Center awaits her return.
Bill Stribling (NYC)
The Clintons have destroyed the Democratic Party. What party would she run with?
Petey tonei (Ma)
The democratic party depended on the Clintons to fund them and raise money for them. The Clintons won the loyalty of upwards of 30 state democratic parties. The Clintons were marvelous fund raisers, even till the end of her campaign she was out raising megabucks. Even Obama got sucked into raising money for the democratic party. Some how the democratic party thinks if it raises enough money, it can win races. What it forgot was to listen to the voters who did not care one bit how much money they raised from Wall Street or Hollywood or Silicon Valley. What mattered to the voters is what the democratic party DOES for the, do they have their backs? Will they pick them up when they the voters fall down? No the DNC proved it did not care. While Bernie was exciting millions and millions of people, the DNC was busy scheming how to take him down, at the cost of the voters who were actually in reality resonating with Bernie's vision for a better America. their future.
Barbarra (Los Angeles)
This was amusing and much needed. Hillary worked tirelessly for New Yorkers as Senator. She and her family were friends with the Trump's. With friends like these who needs enemies? Trump is rapidly becoming irrelevant. His boastful lies got him elected. His vendetta against Mexico is outrageous. Better still ask his cabinet.
Glenn Ribotsky (Queens, NY)
Actually, I'd prefer Barack to run for mayor here--or even better, Michelle.

I suspect, though, if they do any more politicking it will be back in Chicago, which sorely needs them now.

I KNOW neither is getting a Supreme Court nomination--probably the most appropriate office for either--anytime soon.
SqueakyRat (Providence)
I bet she could write a pretty interesting book, if she dared to tell the truth.
David Ricardo (Massachusetts)
Great. And when Hillary the Mayor does all this childish stuff to irritate the Donald, he instructs the IRS to audit the Clintons every year for the last 7 and the next 7. In addition, she shows up in her private jet overseas and it turns out her American passport has been cancelled. DJT makes sure that it takes awhile for the American embassy to replace said passport. He also instructs the Secret Service to be as intrusive as possible while protecting the erstwhile First Lady.
In a race to the bottom, don't you think the Donald is the favorite?
SheWhoIs (Somewhere USA)
I see it now--Hillary as the Flying Dutchman drifting from election to election and never anchoring.
SMJ (MD)
Please, please, Hillary, just ride off into the sunset, and be heard no more.
Favs (PA)
She is also pushing 70. Give the country a break and get some fresh voices and new faces with a cleaner history in political leadership.
Bill (Illinois)
I'm with her! Her best is yet to come. It may be mayor of New York or it may be something else. Whatever it is, she will be great. I pray for her return!
HT (New York City)
"A conservative news organization reported." And people buy this as a source. The real stupidity, the deeply buried stupidity is all liberal progressive. You should know better and you are not learning.
Tara (New York)
Run Hillary run! de Blasio is not doing a very good job. You are certain to get along much better with Cuomo. But Clinton won't because she is not a NYC resident.

Preet Bharara should consider running. He would make history as a successful India born immigrant. Go for it Preet.
Andrea (Santa Cruz)
It's fun to think about, but I just don't think she's that petty.
Tony Mendoza (Tucson Arizona)
No! She gave us Trump. That is enough damage for one woman. She needs to retire to good works and leave the politics to competent people.
caveman007 (Grants Pass, OR)
She should run, and win. There are few actual leaders among the Democrats. She could be one of the few.
JLJ (Boston)
Ah yes, Mr. Bruni indulging in petty, adolescent, revenge fantasies, suggesting that NY resources and time be devoted to harassing the President. And he wonders why conservatives find him trivial.
Garak (Tampa, FL)
What about homeless shelters next to Trump buildings? Shelters for sexual offenders? Drug addict rehab centers?
Bob (San Francisco)
This is exactly why the investigation of the Clinton Foundation must be completed. I pray never to see Hillary in any office again and G-d forbid Chelsea runs.
Bella (The City different)
The mayor of NYC would be a huge step down no matter how you want to look at it, a far cry from president. Anyhow, I think HRC is in a good place now and to be out of the spotlight. There is plenty of wonderful things she can do outside of government. Her time has passed and it is time to concentrate on how we manage the current situation and encourage dynamic new leaders in the democratic party.
duckshots (Boynton Beach FL)
Bruni, I hope this is your last op-editorial. Not clever and not funny. The insincerity of the press and paid media brought us the clowns who own the Government both sides. You all take no responsibility for your role in bringing us Trumpsky or dumbing down the electorate. Out institutions are a mess because you care more about how smart you are than how smart we should all be. Go back and have a few martinis with your sources who care more about political correctness and mosaics than human decency. Tell them to jail those who need to be jailed and feed those who are hungry. Get them to build housing for the homeless and stop irrigating their golf courses. Here's a good topic: come up with useful ways to spur the economy other than gambling casinos and hotels.
Aurace Rengifo (Miami Beach)
I will not stop smiling today. I just remember that NYC used to be our capital.
Anne Smith (NY)
Do you realize how much this sounds like what many feel is the progressive playbook? Get as much political power as you can for two equally important goals: push your agenda and use the power of government to persecute your political rivals? Yes, I know it was written as satire, but it also shows a vindictiveness that lies at the heart of the progressive movement. I don't think Hillary is progressive herself unless she needs to look that way but she would embrace the second. Thank God she is not our president, even if that means dealing with trump.
JTS (Palm Desert, CA.)
Hillary is an old angry woman whose tendency to over-indulge is becoming known worldwide. Bruni is still eating the Clinton pablum, but fewer and fewer are partaking of the slop. There are too many bright women in this country now to consider someone who should think about "fading away."
DLC2 (NJ)
Using the power of government to gain revenge on your rivals seems to be a very common Democrat "fantasy". It is among the greatest of your many flawed views of government and society.
Ken May (League City, Texas)
Ah, Democrat fantasy land, where big city corruption and cronyism supersedes the power of the federal government. Good luck with that, delusionals. You're gonna need it.
Kevin Burke (Baltimore)
The wealth gap in NYC is grotesque and many people can barely afford to eat and you want Clinton to bother Trump with bureaucracy? Please get lost in the woods along with everyone associated with the Clinton campaign.
Misterbianco (PA)
Let's not kid ourselves. The Clintons would figure out some way to secure a cozy, self-serving relationship with Trump.
Mountain Dragonfly (Candler NC)
A fun read...and a side of Mr. Bruni that is not often seen, though his appearance and comments on Morning Joe displayed more spunk and daring outspokenness that usually appears in his columns. One thing for sure, if HRC does return to any elected position, her demeanor and intentions will never stoop to the kind of actions that DRT exercises is his tweets and comments. And I would rather see her in a position that had with a national vs. local flavor. If NYC could benefit from her intelligence and experience, certainly there can be some way that she can serve the nation. After all, the presidency for the next four years does not seem to hold the promise of anything good for our citizens.
Banicki (Michigan)
There is a good chance she would lose. No matter that much of the negative information that came out about her originated from Russia, it is now public information for all to digest.

Hillary, stick to repairing the damage that was done to the Clinton Foundation due to information that came out during your run for President.
Ruth (France)
Maybe Hillary Clinton could cause a big traffic jam on the GWB and all the liberals could laugh about it! No wait, I forgot: that's not funny...neither is this article. The same dynastic political tendency suggesting that the Bushes and Clintons should dominate the White House for decades set the stage for the coronation of Trump as emperor. The defamation of actual progressives, like de Blasio, is great for the Clintons, but it's been pretty crummy for the Democratic party.
David Derbes (Chicago)
The sort of petty high school revenge that Mr. Bruni talks about might be fun to imagine, but I don't believe Sec. Clinton is vengeful. We might wish her to be (I cannot stand That Man) but it's not her.

I'd like to see her become the president of a major university, or, ideally, a Justice on the Supreme Court. She has a remarkable energy and intelligence. which should be at work for the nation's benefit. That's the great tragedy of this election, more than the damage the current president-elect is sure to wreak: the country, and indeed the world, has been deprived of the most talented and experienced person to seek the office in the past two hundred years. Alas, she is not good at is getting elected in a country where a third or so of the electorate does not believe in objective reality. I hope that she will not run again for any elected office.
james (portland)
Of course the Clintons have made mistakes. Who hasn't in decades? USA needs all the help it can get. Popular vote after Russian hacking and interference plus Comey's wolf-cry--she's got capital.
NeverHER (SC)
The clintoncrimefamily's "mistakes" cost millions of lives, trillions of dollars and helped decimate the planet past the point of no return. "Oopsie" doesn't cut it.
Scott K (Atlanta)
She was a deeply flawed candidate before, and she is a deeply flawed candidate now.
Beadfreak64 (Portland, Oregon)
Obviously we should hire lawyers to figure out how to get out of the financial mess the lawyers before us have gotten us in to. I guess we can all watch Hilary lose a third time.
Monica Williams (Pontiac, MI)
Yes! Yes! Yes! This would also be a powerful statement on the real power of CITIES in the 21st Century, as centers for our values and for our economic strength. And Hillary could still perform on her forward thinking "Initiative on Technology and Innovation," if she uses the powerful platform of New York to thoughtfully to connect to post-industrial cities working to reboot themselves.
Gary F.S. (Oak Cliff, Texas)
I have to hand it to Mr. Bruni. I swore a couple of years ago I'd never again read one of his insipid columns. Life is just too sort to waste time on threadbare analysis, one dimensional thinking, and conventional platitudes. But the headline of this one was click-bait I couldn't ignore - and boy was I rewarded with classic Frank Bruni fatuousness.
JCallahan (Boston)
While I detest Trump this all seems cutesy and irrelevant.
Djanga (Dallas, Tx)
It would be wonderful to see Hillary Clinton as mayor of NYC. Run, Hillary! Keep smiling and be a stickler for following the rules, especially when dealing with the Dark Tower's chief occupant.
Dsc (Wisconsin)
Here is how it goes in reality.
Clinton tries all of that.
President Trump turns the DOJ loose on the Clinton Foundation.
Hillary, Her Family, and Close friends all go to prison.
WestSider (NYC)
Mr. Bruni. The only thing we want from the Clintons is for them just to go away and never be heard of again.

We already have a corrupt mayor, we don't need another one.
gmpcs13 (mookie)
Trump could eliminate this venture with a special prosecutor for here already existing misdeeds. She better lay low, but the Clinton's don't know how to do that..
Tom Krebsbach (Washington)
My heavens! This is sheer genius. Let's get Hillary to run for mayor of NYC and get elected, then once again she can run for president in 2020 on the Democratic ticket.

Then once again some know-nothing, crotch grabbing, racist buffoon like Donald Trump, maybe Trump himself, can defeat her and turn her into a laughing stock for the nation. Yeah, that makes sense. Boy these Democrats are sure smart, aren't they?

One thing Democrats do not need is Hillary Clinton, that Wall Street loving, foreign policy hawk, floor mat for Israel, despised by at least half of the country, running for political office of any sort. What they need is for Hillary Clinton to get as far away from Democratic political considerations as is physically possible. I might hope she would move to Mongolia, though I would pity the Mongolians.

But let it never be said that some Democrats (those who want Hillary to run for office) are not some of the dumbest people in country. Maybe they should get together with members of the Tea Party to start an organization which is the opposite of MENSA.
Angela (Long Island City)
It's a really hard job. She's qualified to do it. Does she want to do it? IDK, but I do know she was ready to take on 4-8 years as POTUS, so I hope she at least considers this. I'm a resident of Queens and I would vote for her without hesitation. de Blasio? Hot mess. I'd seriously consider voting for a Republican over him.

Bonus? The woman who got 3 million more votes than him - in the POTUS race - running the City he wishes loved him would irk even more of that deep orange into Trump's face.
John (USA)
This article is one mighty long stretch. Mayor de Blasio isn't doing such a bad job. Leave him alone. HRC's time is done. It's time to fade into the background and let a new generation take control. HRC back on the scene would be like watching one of those dinosaur 70s band attempting an embarrassing comeback tour. Like said dinosaurs, she should just head to Vegas and perform for her smitten fans and spare the rest of us. It would be lucrative for her and the curious could read about it on TMZ or perhaps have a gander at some long-buried Youtube video.
Nicola Adamson (New Zealand)
Delightful. Thanks for the dreamy romp through fantasy.
Mark (New York, NY)
So, she'll get revenge against Trump, De Blasio, Weiner, Cuomo, and Schumer, among others, for assorted slights, real, imagined, potential, or possible.

It does sound like Hillary, but will she have any time left to collect money from Goldman Sachs, et al., and ram Wall Street's political and economic agenda down our throats? Or will Bill take care of that?
tonyg (Pt.Townsend,Wa.)
Funny, but not one of those things would happen. She would have to bend over backwards to appear to not be acting from a grudge against Minority Elected Precedent Swamp.
BMajor (NYC)
Bruni, What are you trying to accomplish with this sophomoric fluff? Have you been reading the front page of the NY Time? Putin has attacked the core of America, and Trump is his number 1 weapon. Putin has successfully committed a Pearl Harbor on the foundation of America's entire political and social infrastructure. He is attacking our freedom, security and lining-up social unrest for us. Is this a good time for sarcastic humor?

Putin has ordered his military and intelligence departments to attack and destabilize America's ability to self-govern. He has helped install a government in America that is literally being lead by people who are insane, unstable, unsuitable, criminal and immoral.

Like ISIS, Russia is using propaganda and weapons to create fear, pain, panic and distrust in order to divide, control and pillage. Trump is following the lead.

Putin's goal is to destabilize, weaken and control America. Trump's support and comfort for Putin, his assault on truth, international relationships, American society, human decency, and advocation of self-rule and violations of our Constitution, show Trump is a malevolent traitor at the center of the worst crisis our Democratic Republic has ever had.

Americans must immediately unite, recognize that our government, freedom and our way of life is under direct attack, We have to snap out of the apathy, disillusionment and escapism causing us to be blind, deaf and dumb, about it. We need shock and screams, not humor and dreams.
Jim Dwyer (Bisbee, AZ)
Hillary won the election by nearly 3 million votes. Is there no redress to this major democratic sin? Can not the Democrats go to the US Supreme Court at this point and, given Putin's crimes, order a re-election or at least a meaningful recount? Or does this have to become another Bush/Gore give away?
Ed Thomas (New York)
Can we please stop? Please? I'm not happy Trump won, but there's no proof he was involved with any Russian hacking and he won the election by the rules: more Electoral votes. Given how many people were wringing their hands when he refused to unequivocally state he'd accept the results of the election it's the height of hypocrisy to keep calling for a do-over because you don't like the outcome of the election.

Protest his policies, contact your representatives, get involved locally. Just move on from the fantasy that Mr. Trump won't take the oath of office on January 20th.
Bash (Philadelphia, Pa.)
People started forming an opinion of Hillary Clinton more than 20 years ago. Those who needed the Russians or Comey to help make up their minds about her probably can't read, don't watch the news and shouldn't bother voting. The hacking seems to have revealed things about the Clinton's that people who pay attention to the news suspected all along. If there was some vast right wing conspiracy the Clintons sure did their part in handing their enemies material to keep the conspiracy alive.

Hillary Clinton lost 30 states. She did not win the US election. Do what the Clintonistas have been saying to the Sanders' supporters right along, "You lost, get over it."
Observant (3rd Rock)
Liberals are such silly creatures
One thing you can count on them for, and it sure isn't sane rational governence, is thier intolerance towards anyone who doesn't agree with their big government ways.
Big government = Anti-Americanism
Blue state (Here)
Some of us just aren't that into her, and taking revenge on NYC for hatching Trump is a little petty, esp. because there appear to be serious national security issues and conflicts of interest involved. Frank, don't be the hairstylist that turns my hair blue because I wasn't that crazy about Judy Garland in Wizard of Oz.
Robert Roth (NYC)
There goes the neighborhood. I want Trump to self-deport. And who needs Clinton living here.
Sonia E (Philadelphia, PA)
Thank you, Frank, for a warm fantasy on a cold day, otherwise characterized by ongoing dread of January 20. Regarding comments about "getting over Clinton's election loss": Let's make a deal: we Democrats will stay with this thought only as long a McConnell et al didn't get over 2008 and 2012.
Gabriel Alarcon (New York City)
Democrats really are delusional. Why would any liberal NYer want the woman who rigged a democratic primary and then lost against the worst candidate in history, run our great city? Bernie was right, her judgement is absolutely terrible. Her campaign was terrible, her tactics were terrible, she needs to retire.
MP (FL)
She needs to go away and stay away. She is a two time loser. I don't want to hear from or Bill again. The party can't take a three time loser.
ebmem (Memphis, TN)
Sounds like typical vindictive Democrat strategy of abusing power. Don't like someone, terrorize them with regulatory excesses. Don't like your political opponents, have the IRS hold up their applications for non profit status indefinitely, and audit their personal returns while you're at it. If you deny them, they could appeal, but if you just drop them in the file cabinet they can't do anything. The Little Sisters don't want to pay for contraceptives, threaten them with confiscatory fines and they tie them up in litigation for years.

The last Republican who attempted to abuse his power resigned to prevent being impeached. She learned well from Nixon.
Maggie Mahar (NYC)
Frank--

I'm sorry that you don't realize what a good mayor DeBlasio has been.

His emphasis on on the homeless and public schools, the need for
pre-K, etc., were not Bloomberg's strong suits. (In some ways, Bloomberg was a v. good mayor, but there were large holes in his knowledge & experience.)

I realize that some New Yorkers don't like DeBlasio because he built housing for the homeless in places the Upper West Side. (Supposedly, folks who live on the Upper WS are liberals, but some were furious to have homeless people live
"within 3 blocks of my Apt.!!!)

I live on the Upper West Side, and the homeless have caused not problem here.

As for public schools--my daughter has been teaching in them for 13 years, and
sees how more support they are getting under DeBlasio.

That said, I would love to see Hillary run for mayor--with DeBlasio's support.

If the thinks he can't win (and Republicans are going to do their best to crush him) then I would love to see him get together with HRC and figure out a way that the two of them could team up and make sure that NYC continues to have
a progressive, non-racist agenda. (Maybe he could be "senior deputy mayor"?

We really don't want to lose him.
And we really, really, don't want to see a Republican become NYC's new mayor.

Hillary could pull this off.
And I think she's smart enough to realize that, in some ways, the mayor of NYC
has more power to change where the U.S. is heading than the POTUS.
JEB (Austin, TX)
Fine, fine, fine. But as for Andrew Cuomo, no. We do not need any more Clintonians leading the Democratic party.
CK (Rye)
Pitiful, for the glaring lack of insight this author has for the reasons a person loses an election in America.
Gregg Vane (Mammoth Lakes, CA)
I love this idea so much that even as a life long Californian I would move to NYC to vote for her!
Lulu (49009)
Clinton needs to retire and enjoy her daughter, son-in-law and her grandchildren. Before you know it, time will have gone by and she lost all that time busting her time trying to be in some type of political office. Hillary, just stop already.
Ben Alcala (San Antonio TX)
Funny stuff Frank. But even it was intended as a joke it would actually be a good idea. As a technocrat with government experience Hillary Clinton would actually be able to do the job well.

Plus another glass ceiling in the Big Apple? Come on New York, help Hillary make history!

It would be wild if Hillary would be able to fix a lot of New York City's problems and make it a better place for New Yorkers. New York City could be America's shining beacon once again.

It would also provide a nice contrast to the smoking wreckage that the rest of the country will be once Donald Trump and his GOP partners in crime get done with the USA.

It could also show Americans what good government can do as fellow New Yorker Donald Trump drives the rest of the country into the ditch.

D.T. in MD (MD)
Very amusing, good laugh. Some of it at least would have been poetic justice. However- no. Hillary would have made a good NYC mayor, she's a better New Yorker than Donald ever was, but now she needs to sit back and let others run the show. She doesn't need to prove anything politically to anyone anymore. She would make a good member of almost any civic-minded board or commission, and they would probably fall all over themselves trying to get her. She could do a great deal of good that way- maybe she should?
Rw (canada)
Good for you for having put this it in print. My 72 yr old self on occasion has had such gleefully vengeful thoughts but, rarely, if ever, did I have the nerve to give voice. Yes, good for you, and thanks for the gleeful, revenge-filled chuckles. That said, I hope Secretary Clinton retires, and enjoys her very young grandchildren. Time goes all too quickly. She's given enough to public service.
William Stuber (Ronkonkoma NY)
Why can't we put an end to the Clinton dynasty once and for all. Let's find some fresh blood for the Democratic Party and a change in the platform to support working people across all "identity" lines. Isn't this supposed to be what the party is about? Revenge is supposed to be the pettiness for conservative hard-liners. I guess the NYTs new mission has become to brainwash the electorate that the Democratic platform is fine the way it is.
s w (ft lauderdale)
I don't think it's a good idea. I admire Ms. Clinton but the job is difficult. She won't have the cushion of staff that she would have had as President.
sashakl (NYC)
She would be a wonderful mayor for us New Yorkers. This is the best political thing I've heard since Nov. 8. She is quite familiar with Brooklyn which is a great place to live. There are even some lovely nature walks in Prospect Park. She would be a treasure and we need her. She has my vote for sure.
Ernest Werner (Town of Ulysses NY)
No no no. Hillary's loss is epic tragedy but (given our system) she did honestly lose. And now, another place in politics? Uh uh.
Hillary has to invent her own role henceforth, distinctively hers. No rush about that. A season of quiet patience and insight will come.
Emma (NY)
This article is beautiful. Hillary Clinton should tap into the power of women - women want to work for her and do good things for the world.
M (New York)
There was a time when people would run for Mayor of NYC to make it a better place.

Now, it's to meddle, settle scores, play politics, jockey for public attention, garner name recognition and make Trump's life difficult just for the sake of it even though, as Obama noted, we're all playing on the same team. Apparently not.

What a truly awe-inspiring vision you paint.

Your editorial is so petty and pent up with juvenile glee that it seems far better suited towards the social media banter that junior high students commonly engage in. Perhaps I'm being overly generous.

This is what passes for journalism?

My advice: Grow Up.
Sam Quinn (Orlando)
I believe she would be better suited as dog catcher. My mutt whines every time he heard her voice during the debates. I bet all the stray dogs in NY City would fear her and leave.
Steve Singer (Chicago)
Not only is she is a well-trained, sophisticated lawyer and policy wonk, she represented New York effectively in the United States Senate. As to the social proprieties I am agnostic.

It's a matter for New Yorkers to decide.
Jan (NJ)
Her over-inflated ego may prevent her from running. I suggest the de Blasio's bolt everything down at Gracie Mansion should she choose to run.
Jesse The Conservative (Orleans, Vermont)
So this is what Liberal dreams are made of-- using the powers of an elected office engage in illegal activities, aimed at inflicting financial harm on a newly elected president--because you don't like him?

I can see now why the NY Times didn't have a problem with the IRS abuse of power--in denying tax status to conservative non-profits.

But how to explain the Times' fascination with Bridgegate? Easy--the usual partisanship.
Selkie77 (Az)
Great article. What a fun scenario to imagine. Lol. Yes, she could make Trump's life miserable, maybe even close Trump Tower. Too much fun. Any excuse to hammer Trump into oblivion. Unless he compromises our national security of course . . . . . . .

But if I were her, I'd retire gracefully and I think she'll do just that. Oh well, it's fun to imagine.
Chris (Berlin)
Getting rid of the Clinton cabal was the silver lining with this election loss for me.
Hopefully she got the message.
Craig Ayliffe (Greenville, SC)
An amusing thought and entertaining article. But am I the only one who remembers when she sniffed at the BLM protester who crashed her fundraiser and then had her removed? Let's look toward the future and encourage new fresh progressive blood and fewer neo-liberal elitists and multi-millionaires. Clinton is a flawed and divisive figure. Let's move on.
OldBoatMan (Rochester, MN)
You skipped the most important reason. Democrats need more mayors and governors - a real presence on the local ballot. Combining that presence with a burr under Trump's saddle, that ingenuity worthy of a Democrat.
ebmem (Memphis, TN)
Sounds like a rerun of the past couple of years. She beats out the socialist contender and then gets trumped by a Republican upstart. NYC is about ready to try a liberal Republican again. The voting irregularities during the primary disadvantaged the Bernie voters and the third party guys who didn't know they had to change their party registration six months before the primary are annoyed.
Dotconnector (New York)
Working much like tag teams in professional wrestling, Times news and opinion writers, with their editors's blessing, have been force-feeding Mrs. Clinton to us at a frenzied pace for four solid years, as if "It's Her Turn" had become the official motto of the paper of record. Just think, for instance, of how they dissed the Sanders candidacy.

All the hagiography, scenario-promoting and scale-tilting have become eye-glazingly repetitive, implying -- to the point of being insulting -- that the Democratic Party has no other women qualified to be top-tier candidates. If there were any interest in looking, The Times might even find some who are under Social Security age. But its habitual anointing has essentially frozen the field.

From the standpoint of agenda journalism, "All Clinton, All the Time" is not only off-putting, but lazy. We deserve better.
Scratch (Ohio)
In order for the Democratic Party to retain any relevance and grow/regain its base, this must not happen. Hillary Clinton has done good in this world, but it's time for her and Bill to move on from progressive politics. She can only do harm from here on out.
mjturvey (seattle, wa)
Let's be clear. The Democratic Party, nationally and locally, has to move past the Clinton era and develop new leadership.

I voted for her, I desperately wish she were the one getting inaugurated this month, but we gotta move on.
Brainpicnic (Pearl City, HI)
There is a cadre of hard core Hillary fans, but most of us are over it, forever. We can't just keep anointing her to positions, that gave us Trump. I know this is a tongue in cheek piece but the humor is not apparent to me, it only tickles my "triggers", and reminds me how broken the Democratic party is.
Dave (The Villages, Florida, USA)
Yes, Mayor of New York might be a letdown for HRC. But, truly great leaders are willing to serve where they are needed. I have no doubt about her faith. This could prove to be a really prophetic move for the rare mix of skilled leader and politician.
Cameron (California)
Thanks for the smile. She'd be a great Mayor, she has the knowledge and connections to get things done and New Yorkers are smart enough to know it. Unfortunately she's too much of a class act to seek revenge and smear Trump as he did her so she'd be better off continuing to help people around the world w' the Foundation. The U.S. had its chance.
Gnirol (Tokyo, Japan)
Why the desire to have Ms. Clinton get back at Trump? As Mr. Trump becomes less and less patriotic, as he walks back all of his outrageous promises and turns into an establishment Republican with a Putin bromance thrown in, it's up to the people to make his life miserable, not Hillary. A small crowd for the Inauguration, dismal ratings for the live event on TV (you can always read about it an hour later on the net) would be a good start. Ms. Clinton tried, made some mistakes, and failed to win the Electoral College. It's our turn now, in 2018 and 2020 to thwart Mr. Trump every chance we get.
C. Morris (Idaho)
Well, I don't believe she would do any of that gas-lighting of Trump. Some people actually take high office seriously. Most of what you mention would be criminal activity, using the power of the city to harass.
Jordan Kaye (Brooklyn, NY)
The problem we are facing right now isn't trying to figure out a next job for Hillary. She had a job: it was the laughably easy task of defeating a dangerous ego maniac for president. It was the layup of all time. And she failed. Her job now is to recede from the public eye, not take up another ounce of political oxygen, and hope that history forgives her. Our job is to look to the future and build a new generation of hopefully more effective leaders.

And your job is to stop writing about Hillary!
Harvey Wachtel (Kew Gardens)
I can laugh at the thought of Hillary Clinton running for mayor, but Andrew Cuomo for president is another matter. I was able to vote for Hillary despite many misgivings because of whom she was rinning against, but I swear if it's Trump vs. Cuomo on 2020, I'm writing in Warren.
Kathleen Conroy (Seattle)
Hillary could be the Chair for the US Conference of Mayors and, as such, lead the charge to create sanctuary cities for dreamers across the country. Moreover, she could Chair the World Conference of Mayors and, as such, lead the global effort to accelerate the adoption of clean and alternative sources of energy.

Since the sister cities of NYC include Beijing, Budapest, Cairo, Brasilia, Jerusalem, Johannesburg, London, Madrid, Rome and Tokyo Mayor Clinton could use those partnerships to drive significant advances in trade and human trafficking, among other key international matters.
Mary Ann (Seattle)
Enough with Clinton, already.

Her numbers are not that impressive, if you include those who could have voted, and didn't. That she could be flattened by the electoral college, and a candidate as vile and unqualified as Trump, should indicate pretty clearly to the DNC to reconsider its platform, and stop putting up DINOs, especially when it comes to Wall St. and the economy.

Joe Biden was tired and emotionally spent, but he could have won.
PBGVNinja (<br/>)
Enough already. No more political dynasties. If you get Hillary in any political office, you get Bill too. It's time for her to take some well deserved time off - she has worked very hard and deserves respect for her contributions as a first lady, senator, cabinet member and presidential candidate.
Trump changed the equation, for now. His candidacy and presidential win put a stop to both the Bush and Clinton political machines - for now - and upset both the Dem and GOP political machines. It will be interesting to see how the current hacking / intelligence scandal ultimately plays out. If the Dems were hacked, the GOP probably was too - Putin just didn't have the GOP's dirty little secrets leaked prior to the election. DT has a lot of enemies, and they aren't all Democrats, so hopefully he has kept his nose clean. We'll see.
jnc (georgia)
The Clinton punching bag is finally stored in the basement with the email server. Let's leave it there.
Here (There)
She wouldn't have the money for those legions of inspectors once Trump personally cuts New York off from the federal teat for being a sanctuary city.
Steve the Tuna (NJ)
With a net worth in the tens of millions of dollars, plus access to hundreds of millions more through the Clinton Foundation, we shouldn't feel sorry for Hillary, or expect her to expose herself to more torture, character assassination and prying by hostile 'press' just to run NYC. The Clintons can travel the world and be welcomed by foreign leaders and dignitaries most everywhere (Russia being one notable exception), and will never have to open their tax records again if she shirks public office. At 69 it's obvious so no longer has the fire in the belly demanded by gutter/Twitter politics and her energy level dictates a lifestyle change. Hopefully she'll agree to work the phones for campaign donations to the next generation of Democratic 'lions' like Corey Booker and Keith Ellison, who MAY have a chance (with the proper coaching and support) to actually BEAT a Republican in a national race. When your party has lost hundreds of representatives, governors and state legislators over recent years, it is time to change your direction and your leadership. Sayonara, Hill. You were sane, competent and marginally concerned with the plight of us 'little people', which is a distinction that will sorely be missed.
Ken L (Atlanta)
Silly and fun, but she has bigger fish to fry. She can influence a lot more international and domestic policy from within the Clinton Foundation.
Pat B. (Blue Bell, Pa.)
This article had me literally giggling with glee at the thought! I had no idea she was considering a run, by I think it's an excellent idea. She is highly qualified and thoroughly vetted. Maybe more important, she could emphasize what a love of and lifetime in public service is all about- not the titles or perceived status, but the opportunity to effect change on behalf of the people you serve.
B Sharp (Cincinnati)
Indeed now all the hacking reports are out and Hillary Clinton has almost close to 3 million more popular votes plus fake stories on her has been seen and digested it is a great idea.
Donald Trump lost to Hillary in New York and with the current situation of the Democratic party taking a beat it is high time for Hillary Clinton going for another capacity.
Former Hoosier (Illinois)
Love it. Perfect! A very funny column. I needed a laugh because 2 weeks from today I will be perpetually crying.

And, remember, Hillary was born and raised in a Chicago suburb. We Chicagoans know all about extracting political revenge. Sending in the city inspectors, leaving certain streets unplowed, "forgotten" political promises are our specialty!
Andrea Rathbone (Flint,Tx)
It's rims for the whole Clinton family to collect their million no ( or is it billions now?) and buy some nice spacious villa in the South of France. They've done enough damage and, even in fun, I never want to hear from or about them ever again.
Douglas McNeill (Chesapeake, VA)
It is just as likely we could have a Mayor Clinton for political retribution as it is for Mr. Trump to get brain cancer for Divine retribution. As Longfellow observed:

Though the mills of God grind slowly,
Yet they grind exceeding small;
Though with patience he stands waiting,
With exactness grinds he all.
Anne-Marie Hislop (Chicago)
Lovely fantasy - revenge (in fantasy) is always sweet. That said, I truly hope Hillary moves on. She can/should give speeches (another, less time consuming way, to be a thorn in DT's side). I'd love to see her teach at some university - inspire the young. She'd be a great mentor. She should also enjoy life and those wonderful grandkids of hers - they won't be young for long...
Bertrand Plastique (LA)
I remember thinking she would have been smart to take Bloomberg up on his advice back when he broached the notion.

HRC has approximately zero regard for timing, without which a political career can scarcely be made on any level. Therefore it's only fitting that she'd be open to running for mayor now, years later, as a follow-up to her wobbly belly flop in November. The world must conform to Hillary's fancy and every campaign must be a coronation.

Put the worst spin possible on de Blasio's term and he's still vastly preferable, imo.
John Brandt (Carneys Point, NJ)
I'm hoping and praying she runs against Trump in 2020. 75 today is like 60 was just a few years back. Temperate judgment is her strong suit and clearly what Trump doesn't have. The three or 4 red states she'd need are easily achievable, albeit guided with hindsight. The time to get out front and lead is now. She needs to make a deal with Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders and Jill Stein now, so they could early get behind her. I don't believe that the old baggage would weigh as much going forward. All she really needs now is good personal trainer so she could withstand the gauntlet.
Petey tonei (Ma)
John no more Clintons please. There's nothing but scandal and baggage wherever they go.
Primosdaddy (Los Angeles)
I supported her, in the end, but please, God -- no more Hillary. Let's turn the page and move on to a new generation of progressive leaders -- and Bernie Sanders, of course.
Mr Oblong (CA)
One of the biggest reasons to oppose our child-in-chief-elect is precisely the kinds of antics this editorial advocates.

I know it's written tongue-in-cheek, but it's as petty as the perennial loser we managed to elect as President, and I'd prefer for as many people as possible to maintain some level of decorum.
Rolando Gutierrez (San Diego California)
America (not my America BTW) elected an unsuitable Russian mole to office. We need her an all other hands on deck to deter, pound and eventually impeach this buffoon from office.
Petey tonei (Ma)
Donald trump has been married to 2 former Eastern European beauties who grew up in formerly Soviet Union. Surely they had some influence on the Donald? won't be surprised if he even speaks some Russian.
George Mandanis (San Rafael, CA)
The daily visits at Trump Tower by Mayor Hillary Clinton’s City building inspectors would be, relatively, only a minor nuisance. The really big problem for Trump would be the follow-up visits by Bill Clinton to explain to him why they were necessary. Hillary is a serious student of Dale Carnegie whose “How to Win Friends and Influence People” is on her bedside. She also admires the management style of Barack Obama who, during his campaign for re-election in 2012, appointed Bill his “Secretary for Explaining Stuff”. Doesn’t this act of Hillary’s generosity epitomize, gloriously, one’s getting two for the price of one?
bkw (USA)
Even better. Hillary should rest up and go for a third presidential try.
She should turn those almost three million popular votes into electoral votes next time. She now knows how. Then take those keys for the White House from the sweaty palms of a defeated (and unable to prove he's really the winner) Donald J Trump. And regarding age. If Trump runs for a second term, he will be 74. She will be a year younger. And as the saying goes, third times are charms.
VMB (San Francisco)
Due to the Russian propaganda influence on our election, I want a revote for president. Hillary Clinton as Mayor of NYC might make New Yorkers happy, but is too small a role for her and denies the rest of the country of her experience and skill. She may be our only credible presidential candidate at this time in our history. She is the one who can stand up to Putin and other bullies. She did it as Secretary of State, and she did it in the debates against Trump.

God save us from Trump, and God save us from continuing diminishment of Hillary Clinton.
Petey tonei (Ma)
Russia did not influence mid America who voted with their conscience to make their voices heard. They have been neglected for so long they did the radical thing of voting against status quo.
CC (The Coasts)
Or Chelsea Clinton: she also seems capable. Certainly more capable than the loathsome BdB who, I've heard from govt sources, is such a micro-manager that even the most uncontroversial projects (think art internships for poor youth in Brooklyn) require his office's approval. So not much happens.
eatbees (Los Angeles)
Let's not forget that before entering politics, Hillary was a super-sharp lawyer.

While having her as mayor may be a nice fantasy for some, I'd rather see her end her career as she began it, as counsel to a presidential impeachment inquiry.
David Gottfried (New York City)
Bruni's cavalier dismissal of De Blasio is irksome and unjustified. But then again, this essay was written to make one laugh and is bereft of seriousness.

I laud and applaud De Blasio because he cares about the poor and income inequality with zealous passion. The article correctly notes that
Cuomo routinely attacks De Blasio, but the article refuses to admit that Cuomo's hostility is based on his antipathy to Blasio's progressive aspirations. Andrew Cuomo has the same name as this father, but that's where the similarity stops; Andy Cuomo is a neo liberal and he spits on the poor, like his friend Hillary.
And both Hillary and Andy Cuomo are idols that are due for smashing. They represent a version of the democratic party that is treasonous to the legacy of FDR.
Ker (Upstate ny)
Mrs. Clinton should talk to Al Gore, who might have been been remembered only for his bizarre, historic, and unfair loss of the presidency but is now known mainly as a Nobel Prize winner for his work on climate change.

But politics? No. sorry. I can't go through that again. No more Clinton Machine, please. We need to move on.
69Olds (California)
With all due respect, it's time for her to move on, unless what she wants is a permanent Republican takeover of government. I can't understand how a smart woman like her cannot understand that she is the personification of the elitist, Wall Street Democratic establishment that we do not want.
Fred White (Baltimore)
It would be great fun to see Hillary, the Harold Stassen of Democratic politics, lose again, this time to de Blasio. Bernie beat Hillary with white voters, of course, and she only won by smearing him with black ones. But against de Blasio, the race card might well backfire on her, which would be perfect poetic justice for driving a stake through her heart once and for all.
Smithereens (New York, NY)
I'm with MAYOR CLINTON.
Debra (Formerly From Nyc)
Yeah, she can be mayor. Fine. But first she needs her 2-term presidency finished as the Russians, accompanied by Republican gerrymandering, gave us "President-elect Trump" or "PEOTUS."

Let her run after 2024.
Howard Raab (Taos, New Mexico)
I grew up and lived in New York City until I was almost 30. One of my children and lots of my family live in the City. This opinion piece has me smiling and saying "Yes!"
C Epstein (New York, NY)
She was an appalling candidate for president, acting entitled to hold the job, and failing to do even the most basic things to secure her campaign from cyber-attacks. Her usage of a personal e-mail account and server while Secretary of State is emblematic of her sense of entitlement. It lost her the election. It's time for the Democratic party to clean house and find people interested in doing something for the vast majority of the population, a demographic ignored and taken for granted by both parties for years. I would very much like to never see her face again or hear her voice, and I voted for her.
Observant (3rd Rock)
Her use of a private server was to avoid oversight by Congress.
Instead she got oversighted by the American people.
She is a subversive and yet many still pine for her.
Sadly, they do.
I am off to go ice fishing.
Embrace the day!
David Gregory (Deep Red South)
Hillary is already an historic figure as the biggest loser of all time.

Every poll showed voters left, right and center deeply desired change and she chose to run as the ultimate insider. She was able to get selected by Super Delegates within the Democratic Primary process but there are none in the Electoral College. Her tone deaf campaign went over like a thud in most of our nation. The Clinton worshippers known as Hillbots were and are still enthralled with her and do not still understand what happened, wondering why she is so deeply disliked by so many.

Had the Democrats run anyone else, Trump would not be preparing to assume power. Her vanity campaign brought us President-Elect Trump. The fact she lost to someone like Trump shows how narrow her support was and is. New York can do better than the former First Lady of Arkansas.
Petey tonei (Ma)
People have short memory. They forget how on election night when the votes started coming in, state after state, the dampness in Hillary votes, became more and more apparent as the night went on. There was just no oomph in her votes except in predictable coastal urban demographics. It was the longest night. All those months of media hyping about Hillary's sure win, the pollsters showing her way way ahead, everything fell flat on its head. Splat.
ChrisNYC (New York City)
A couple reasons HRC should do us all a favor and "exit stage left" (ala Snagglepuss):
1) Her legendary ability to get caught up in scandals either of her own making or of the lustful men she surrounds herself with.
2) Her inability to be authentic (as much as I hate Trump we all knew what we were getting)
3) A lust for power that belies her complete lack of any actual political belief
4) A laugh that is like nails on a chalkboard
(shall I go on?)

Is she qualified? Sure, but as probably the most hated and divisive politician of her generation she would have been - and will always be - unable to build any type of coalition necessary to do anything.
Cynthia (Albany, NY)
Maybe it's time to look not to a presidency or mayoralty, but elsewhere—away from a system that lets subverted elections stand. Trump & Swamp prove that political offices contain no outsiders.

Clinton and followers could forcefully meet Trump’s assault on democratic principles, from a seat of power and respect outside the bureaucratic box: continued advocacy for equal opportunity, vigorous opposition to transgressions against the spirit and laws of our democracy, and initiatives to help our evolving society move in new directions.
Kodali (VA)
That would be nice if she becomes a mayor of NYC. I also would like to see her run in 2020 for president. By this time, she should have learned that to be a Republican light would not help. Also, would give opportunity to understand the people that live outside the wall street, which should help her in rust belt. I like to see a woman President. Above all, it would be exciting to watch the grudge match in the history of United States. I may be with her in 2020 unless a miracle happens between now and then.
Observant (3rd Rock)
She was incapable of running an effective campaign in 2016.
What makes you believe she can better in 2020?
Reality is askew with so many
L’Osservatore (Fair Verona where we lay our scene)
Trump was never and never will be worried about the Democrat's worst candidate ever.
Don't like law enforcement affecting your party's campaign?
Don't nominate people with decades-long histories of breaking the law - intentionally. Especially while occupying high office.

Tales of Hillary's expletive-laden remarks after the voters had their say may be regurgitated the next time any of the Clintons thrust themselves into the public sphere again.
But at least the $200,000 worth of government property was returned to the White House, eventually.
Did they find the guy who blew that whistle yet?
Another accidental suicide?
Jack (New Mexico)
Great ideas about how to harass the fascist clown, and whoever is Mayor should do everything possible to make Trump pay for his lies, subterfuges, and frauds through constant attention to his business. He could be made to produce his income tax by challenging his payment of state and city taxes. Hope De Blasio does take the actions that will hold Trump responsible.
Bayou Houma (Houma, Louisiana)
Mrs. Clinton seems unable to stop running for political office. Who is really surprised that she hasn't much time for her foundation? Was it ever more than the financing tool for her political ambitions? And not many of us really expect her to start donating much of her own money or time to her foundation. But to disappear in the woods of her upstate home for a year and reappear in the City Mayoral campaign against Bill de Blasio? No, no, no! That isn't the Clinton style. She'd sooner learn to speak Spanish and run for President of Mexico.
Steve Ellwanger (Connecticut)
The fact that Hillary isn't spending every waking moment running the Clinton Foundation speaks volumes.
Debbie (Brooklyn)
Even though she would never ever do it. I think it is an great idea. Hillary Clinton is an experienced, smart, brilliant, women who had, and still has so much to offer our country. I am proud to say I voted for her, and I would happily vote for again.
Ryan (Virginia)
I read NYT everyday and have never responded to any of its articles, but this one crossed a line. Hillary Clinton, a corrupt career politician who lies about her real positions, gleefully takes Wall Street money, and was the second-most unpopular Presidential candidate in American history lost to a reality star buffoon and his army of let-the-world-burn sycophants. She lost Frank. Sure, she won the popular vote, and as a believer in democracy of course I think she should be President, but she knew going into this what the rules were. She didn't win were it counted.

And now here you, and other idiotic Democrats, hellbent on losing every election for the next fifty years not only refuse to learn from your mistakes, you are encouraging a woman who excoriated the Democratic party with vapid centrism and a total lack of ethical guidance to run for office for what? For what amounts to a petty, revenge porn fantasy of being able to mess with the wiring in Trump Tower. You and so many other Democrats have revealed themselves to be unprincipled, spineless, excessively partisan children. This is intellectual equivalent of a five-year old calling a bully a "poopyface."

And You have the gall to attack De Blasio too. A man who is currently proposing a way to get New Yorkers higher education which is more than Clinton was willing to propose before Sanders forced her to actually care. Where's the policy that's going to help average Americans? There is noting here but vileness and hate.
Gabrielle Randall (Brisbane)
This is an entertaining article. However, I think Hillary Clinton will more probably take on a significant international role, perhaps in the area of health, or women's education. Hillary Clinton is a person with considerable worldwide influence and support. She has so much more to offer than simply plotting revenge and becoming an irritation to Trump. Let's not confuse the dignity and statesmanship of HRC with the infantilism of Trump.
Marvin Elliot (Newton, Mass.)
I've lived under every mayor from La Guardia to Bloomberg before I moved to bucolic Newton MA, a city that has one prominent African America, our mayor, Setti Warren,
As a senior in mourning I would find cold comfort in seeing Clinton as Mayor especially now as the utterly unqualified ego-centric Trump is about to embarrass America before the free world. While I'm no longer a registered voter in NYC, I would campaign long distance for her. Go Hillary and send those building inspectors to Trump Tower to look for creepy crawly things, schmutz in the compactor rooms and elevators with expired inspection certificates. Please, please please.
Perry (Texas)
A better idea is to suspend the installation of Trump as President and have a re-vote since there is evidence now that our Presidential election was influenced by a foreign power and therefore the results of that election are now in doubt, and will remain so unless there is an election that confirms the results of the first. If there was a second election I doubt seriously that Trump would win since I already know people that are telling me they would have never voted for him if they had actually thought he was going to win. They were assured by news polls that Hillary had it locked up. Wonder who influenced those reports? I also know some people that are already suffering "buyers remorse" from voting for Trump. Whether they would vote for him again is doubtful. How many more out there would not vote for Trump a second time?
jw (Boston)
Can she not just accept that she lost? Should we really be turning to an aging politician, in the twilight of her career, surrounded by political clout, corruption, and a recent, humiliating loss in the presidential election to continue leading democrats? It's high time the democrats reevaluate their stance and completely gut their aging ranks. Let's create a party for working Americans, one led by Bernie Sanders, who could have been the most progressive president our country has ever seen had it not been for the DNC's agenda against his populist platform. I can't believe this article was actually published. The Clintons are terrible, establishment politicians who have sent too many Americans of to die and too many jobs overseas. Let's forget they even existed.
LA Driver (Los Angeles)
This made me smile - although I would love to see the Clintons move to California and join in the fight against the incoming administration's values. Imagine it - Gov. Brown, Eric Holder, The Obamas (hopefully at some point) and The Clintons.
Peggy (Flyover Country)
That would be worth watching.
DAL (New York NY)
A truly terrible idea, one that proves the risk of getting what one wishes for!

One of the unanticipated boons of the presidential election is the end of nearly three decades of Clinton melodrama and hijinks, at least four years ahead of schedule, if not eight. Now that it's over, let's keep it over, and wave fondly goodbye to the Clintons as they fade into the lavish retirement they so clearly deserve after decades of selfless public service.
Exoten (Sun)
Great idea. (i've banned the exclamation point)
Anyway, she has to keep fighting. Every decent human being has to do whatever he can to block Trump's presidency and remind the world the US is not just a bunch of bullies corrupted thieves.
Misterbianco (PA)
Hillary Clinton is yesterday's news after blowing an election that was virtually in the bag--even allowing for Russian interference. The consequences will be checking into the Oval Office in two weeks.
Doug Terry (Somewhere in Maryland)
My fantasies about Mrs. Clinton in politics vary considerably. I'd like to imagine we are back in 2015 and she had told the world that, no, she would not seek the presidency, but she would wish the other 56 potential candidates well.

I like and admire Hillary Clinton for her willingness to torture herself with running. Actually, I admire her for a lot more. Anyone who is willing to put herself through the grind of running for president, and take on The Donald, after a lifetime of hard work and service must have respect. She has been the exemplar for America of the "A" student who never gives up and works harder at what she wants to do than 20 others, combined. But...

She would have done us and herself a favor by not running. She had done enough. Vice-president Joe Biden hinted that she was a reluctant candidate and, if that was the case, man did it show. She seemed, throughout two races for the White House, to have no sure sense of who and what she was as a politician. As an advocate for children and women, she had no peer, but as a candidate, well...

Virtually all of our presidential candidates in the future will need to be people with short records in public office so that they can't be attacked from 8,000 angles at once. The Republicans could have made something bad about the way she said, "Good morning!", and millions would have voted against her for that reason alone. The new rules: celebrity candidates with short records in public office and bigger, bolder plans.
BC (greensboro VT)
She got 3,000,000 more votes than Trump.
Dan Kuhn (Colombia)
That all sounds good but, but , what if Trump should then decided to try her for her numerous offences while she was acting as Sec. State and start really delving into her and Bill´s past?. What if he should order the FBI to really take a good hard look at Hillary and the Clinton Foundation and then find the evidence to try and convict her. Then it would be off to jail and who would she be lookig to for a pardon? Why Mr. Trump, the guy she had just spent so much time trying to make his life miserable.

Yes Mr. Bruni, swords cut both ways and what comes around, goes around. Hillary just better keep her hands in her pockets and not say anything that might just upset President Trump, He just might go back on his word and tie Hillary and Bill up in court for the rest of their lives and maybe even send the both of them to a federal prison. I think that the FBI would love to take a real crack at her and Bill, and they can be pretty nasty when they want to be.

So from my personal point of view, I think Hillary is going to be walking softly at least until President Trump has left office and is not so much of a threat.

I am not being petty or personal, because we all know if they want to get you they do, unless you are a Clinton. But, did she or did she not do something criminal? If she did, was the price a lost election? I lost my career, my reputation, my family and friends for less. And I didn't do anything criminal. Criminal should be punished, assuming its criminal. Was her conduct criminal or do we accept Comey that it was sloppy?
rocketship (new york city)
Trump is not going to to try her for anything. He has wayyyy to many other things to worry about than Hillary Clinton.
PK (Seattle)
Dan, I think the op ed piece was a joke. But you took it so seriously, and seem to think that your guy, the donald, would retaliate against his former opponent. I find it deeply disturbing that your president (as in, not mine) would make getting back at a political opponent a priority with all the other official stuff he should be doing.
Peggy Jo (St Louis)
I supported HIllary.
I donated generously to HIllary.
I am done with HIllary. She is of the past, a recently unsuccessful past. And to return her to the limelight would be counter-productive to what our country and my party need right now.
Andy (Baton Rouge)
"So many scores she could settle, so many ways she could meddle"

What insane fanfiction am I reading? This is hilarious, pathetic, and also just kind of creepy.
sdushane (Ann Arbor, MI USA)
Hilarious, sweet revenge. No, no one ever mistook us ladies of near-70 to be forest nymphs, and we'd love to see a Hillary comeback, but my sense is she deserves some more walks in the woods before having to regird for battle just yet. Bless you, Girl; we're ready when you are.
Stephen Montgomery (Bakersfield Calif.)
Sweet! We didn't hear much about it in the campaign but she did OK as NY senator.
Ray (Texas)
It would be so cool to see NYC elect a mayor that had never lived in the city! And there is precedence: they already elected a Senator that had never lived in the state. I guess there's not enough home-grown New Yorkers that are qualified to hold office there. Solution - Hillary to the rescue!
WhatTheFact (California)
Yes it would be a lot of fun to see her taunt Trump while she's in charge of his home town. It would be a riot to have her host SNL. She and Alec Baldwin could give us a show for the ages!

But, if she seeks public office, I hope it is for a strategic objective that benefits our nation's future. And I think there is no better national objective right now to be engaged in than to end the electoral college. There are many states where she can run for governor where the "National Popular Vote" initiative is waiting for the governor's signature, including Arkansas. There is also a need for a better coordinated effort to cross the 270 threshold, by getting more states to sign it.
Many blue, purple, and red states have not yet enacted it, and perhaps there is one state that might serve in "the domino effect"? And there is of course the avenue of enacting a Constitutional amendment that will need leadership to get it passed.

Or, perhaps as governor of a gerrymandered state she can set an example to other in adopting an independent redistricting process?

There's a while lot of meaningful work to be done to benefit our country's future, she has the gravitas to make some of these things happen.

Meanwhile I'd be delighted to see any citizen stoke the fires for humor and irony in Trump's home town. And any other state where Trump owns property.

What address should I mail my donation to?
GreaterMetropolitanArea (NNJ)
I like it. The Mexican Day Parade is the best.
John Livecchi (Williamsburg, Va)
No, please. We have had enough of the Clintons. The woods ARE lovely, dark and deep. Stay there!
John (Long Island NY)
I'm often struck by the comments here. The Clintons are far from perfect, they are also head and shoulders more qualified than many others.
Considering the tarring and feathering they have endured they have paid in full for their indiscretions.
If she ran she'd have my support
Karma is a funny thing.
Lee (Arkansas)
Bravo! I can hardly wait.
Jonathan (New York, NY)
Pure genius. The idea that HRC could be the head of the world's most important city at a time of such grave uncertainty is both reassuring & surely heaven sent!
B Sharp (Cincinnati)
So tired of Donald Trump already and he is not even sworn in yet !

I hope Hillary Clinton runs .
And if she loses she is used to it and will take it with stride.

Go for it Madame Hill Run for mayor.
barbara (chapel hill)
Sorry, Frank. I have to desert you on this one. We already have a big joke on our hands, and we don't need another one.
Thoughtful in London (London, UK)
If a conservative were to suggest that it was proper and "good fun" for an elected official to mis-use government power to punish enemies by selectively enforcing building violations or to failing to provide public services such as road paving equitably, liberals would be horrified.
Old Gringo (New York)
Mr. Bruni,
With all due respect (and hoping against hope that this piece was satire),
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
dust particles (z)
I think Hillary, after a few months of reflection post election, will figure out herself what she can do for the country and the party after giving it her best shots (twice) at the top post in US.
If she is resilient and still has passion to serve the country, it would be wise to do it in the way that she feels most natural and comfortable with.
She owes her supporters and the country in general a substantial amount of moral support, if nothing else, for the next 4-8 years!
Kevin T (Rochester)
This is a parody of course. Sad the NYTimes has sunk this low. There's plenty of real news and investigative reporting to do and we have this inept article..... Little wonder alternative online media is overtaking the establishment.
Navarro (Salem, Oregon)
The author is correct. If Hillary were mayor of New York, she probably would abuse the office in search of revenge.
David. (Philadelphia)
So far, Hillary Clinton has not let personal grudges interfere with the realities of elections and government. And in that respect alone, she stands far taller than the thin-skinned swindler America has elected.
Dave (New York)
This was fun fan-fic until the final few grafs. Then, the fantasy became recreating Bridge-gate and censoring a book? Sweet. Sounds like my party is quite happy staying in the woods.
Ryan (Atlanta)
Hillary Clinton can and should stay in Chappaqua, after she attends Trump's inauguration. Enough already. I'm one of the Democrats who voted for her against Trump (actually, against Trump, not for her), but don't want to hear from her again. She's more than earned her retirement.
Here (There)
"She's more than earned her retirement."

So have we.
Walt (Berkeley)
I like the piece, and I like the idea. I'd vote for her, and I live in Berkeley!
Roget T. (New York)
Mayor? How about VP? Given the revelations concerning how Putin ordered cyberwarfare to directly benefit Donald Trump, it's clear to me that Trump should recuse himself from becoming POTUS. With the Presidential election tainted in such a drastic fashion, Mike Pence would become POTUS and he then should appoint Hillary Clinton as his VP. That's how Nelson Rockefeller became VP, so it can happen.
Aaron (Colorado)
I voted for her, but ... please, give us all a break. I'm really tired of politics = Clinton. She lost (despite the popular vote). Give way to the next generation.
Don (Pittsburgh)
Leadership is ageless. Nothing like bashing people based upon age. It's the last refuge of bigotry. There are fine leaders of all ages, and older leaders should always make room for (and promote) great young leaders, but let's not throw anyone away. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren may not be my favorite leaders, but they have inspired young voters despite their age. Wisdom and energy may generally favor one age or another, but they are not exclusive to any age.
KJR (NYC)
Why not? 65 million Americans wanted her to run the country.
Occupy Government (Oakland)
all is not lost. See, e.g., Dan Coats. Lots of retreads find work late in life.

Hillary would make a fine mayor.
Tim Lum (Back from the 10th Century)
I'd let the Donald have his term and rid the middle class of medical coverage, social security, National Parks and clean energy. When Safeway and the farmers Market at the Ferry Building are selling White Man harvested lettuce for 10 bucks a head and Oranges for 10 bucks a pound, it will be fertile ground for another Y'uge Change. If we survive. Shall we all start learning Russian or Chinese?
Maureen (Philadelphia, PA)
Very wry column Mr. Bruni, but our pantsuit icon is also a grandmother who has earned quality time with her family and the causes she cherishes. I hope Secretary Clinton will speak out when those causes need a champion. Secretary Clinton would be a terrific mayor, but perhaps she can contribute more from her perch at the Clinton Foundation.
Justin (Vacaville, Ca)
Nothing screams "fun" like a misappropriation of city resources too harass a business they will have nothing to do with it's namesake by then.

Good times
Tammey Rooney (Madison, CT)
That was a lot of fun, Frank Bruni! Badly needed on a difficult news day..
Greg Shenaut (California)
I admit I LOL'ed at the thought of this. I suppose that if someone would be good at being POTUS (and a majority of American voters thought she would), they'd also be good at being NYC mayor, so yeah, if she wants it, she should go for it.
JimBob (Los Angeles)
Great idea! Come on, it's New York City, not Dayton, Ohio. It'd be a great feather in her cap. Either that or she should go back to Congress; she was a great senator.
Maurice Amiel (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
Mr Bruni seems to have forgotten J. Cesar's famous quote: " i would rather be first in my village than second in Rome" ... as a befitting closing argument for his plea to H.C to run.
Cheers
Mark Thomason (Clawson, Mich)
Hillary caused the defeat of the Democrats.

The worst thing that could happen to the Democratic Party would be a revival of Clintonista influence.

Be gone.
David. (Philadelphia)
Actually, collusion between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin cost the Democrats the election. And we're finding out more about this treasonous con game of Trump's ever day. America deserves much, much better.
Don (Pittsburgh)
No, self righteous, narrow minded, gullible people, who bought into right wing paranoia and baseless innuendo, and those who were too lazy to vote, caused the defeat of the Democratic Party.
Mark Thomason (Clawson, Mich)
David -- "Actually, collusion between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin cost the Democrats the election."

That thinking would get the Democrats defeated again. Blame on some foreign influence avoids the big questions, such as Hillary's own, why she was not winning by 50 points against someone like Trump.

That thinking is also being used in a treasonous way. It is being used by the security state in open rebellion against civilian control that would shut down the foreign wars such as Syria and Libya, which they expected to expand dramatically.

Democrats blame of anyone but themselves is doing themselves great damage, far more than it bothers Trump.
Christine McM (Massachusetts)
Thank you, Frank. What a great fantasy! Doubt she do this but not, it's fun to contemplate.

But wait! Doesn't the Putin hacking machine reach into state and city election database and system servers?

Oh yes, but that shouldn't bother anyone. I mean even Putin by now should be able to let bygones be bygones. He got what he wanted, didn't he? Didn't he?

Oh yes, Vlad, what a surprise. Nice to see you here on the NYT website. Don't worry: you're in the clear: Donald J. Trump released a very important statement following his special classified briefing. He was clear as mud in stating what he learned today, that nothing Putin did affected the outcome of the election.

Oh, that was your goal, was it? Well, if Donald says it's true it must be true, because Trump would never lie to the American people. Would he? So that's why you backed him?
Oh, that does explain everything. Spaceba, Konrad!
Misterbianco (PA)
Please, Mr. Bruni, not even in jest.
And enough already with the glass ceilings; that's how we got into this mess in the first place.
Surely there are destitute people in Africa (and other remote locales) who would benefit from the Clintons' direct intervention.
Let's leave them to their good works.
hawaiigent (honolulu)
How delightful. How gratifying to contemplate. But I see her in a key post at one of the big NGOs like Planned Parenthood and on the board of a half dozen others. Could she head the World Bank, maybe or something equally prestigious? Oh no, not another quartet of snarling trumpets who hate anything Clinton,
Bill from his heyday twenty years back. And why not a year of Nature Walks. And then on to board of Sierra Club.
Eh, what?
Hecrabsoop (NY)
You're right.
Run for Mayor after two failed attempts at the Presidency?
And the slim possibility that she'd lose?
Not happening.

BUT, what about, what about......Chelsea Clinton?
Lack of experience, not ever holding a public office, no matter. New Yorkers would vote her in in it's eponymous minute.
ebmem (Memphis, TN)
Haven't you heard? She sold her place in NYC and bought a place next to the parental units. She's running for Congress. The family is upset with how much donations are down at the Foundation since they have no government largesse to sell.
Sherab Chodron (Key West, FL)
Big Apple here I come!
Rodrian Roadeye (Pottsville,PA)
You paint her as a Chris Christie. I know the Clintons have a reputation for being vindictive but this article is really over and above board. I think that it would be best if she stuck with walking in the parks. Now Sanders...?
Doug Hensley (College Station)
I'm no fan of de Blasio, but surely the city has more sense than to leap from the frying pan into the fire. Clinton has never had the touch. She never will. Things somehow go wrong when she's in charge.
Ashton Laurent (Staten Island, NY)
She'd have my vote!
Drew Emery (Seattle, WA)
A Mayor Hillary only makes sense if you buy into the nakedly sexist trope that her passion, above all else, has been power. And yet, contrary to that lazy analysis, Clinton HAS consistently had three passions over the past few decades: Women's rights, children's welfare and internationalism. How exactly would a NYC mayoralty satisfy what has driven her all this time? Not gonna happen.
Reader In Wash, DC (Washington, DC)
Hillary has three passions: money, money, and money.
Here (There)
"if you buy into the nakedly sexist trope that her passion, above all else, has been power. "

Will you take my credit card for this purchase?
leaningleft (Fort Lee, N,J.)
Hilary should run... as fast as she can - for cover. World War I rule - keep your head down when they are firing shots at you.
Gerry (Park City, Utah)
Great effort, Mr. Bruni, but I'm sorry, for some of us it's too early to joke about the election. Like 9/11, it just hurts too much.
Christina (Florida)
Is NYC a big enough pond for the "Foundation's" money laundering? I guess she has to start small after her defeat and exposure.
David. (Philadelphia)
No money laundering has taken place at the Clinton Foundation. Check their tax returns, publicly available on Hillary Clinton's website, for confirmation. The criminal candidate who uses his charitable foundation's funds for personal indulgences is Donald J Trump.
ebmem (Memphis, TN)
There is no portrait of Bill Clinton hanging in the Clinton Library? Chelsea did not pay for her living expenses for ten years and her wedding using Clinton Foundation Funds.

The IRS has requested that the Clinton Foundation resubmit their information returns, as has the state of NY.

If Trump had posted those returns, they would be called fraudulent. Since it was the Clintons, the IRS and state of NY are calling them erroneous.
Fred DiChavis (NYC)
This column is an embarrassment. Not least because, as any serious New Yorker--much less an NYT columnist!--should know, those "subways that feel more packed" are the responsibility of the governor, who oversees the wretched MTA. And it's just mmmmmaybe possible that Cuomo's inaction on that issue might be a characteristically cynical and cruel strategy to tarnish the mayor in the eyes of those who make the same mistake as Mr. Bruni.
Ryan (Brooklyn)
Is this the Opinion section or the Not Letting Go/Beating A Dead Horse/Hooked on Political Dynasties section?
David. (Philadelphia)
Perhaps it's just a wish for intelligent competence instead of egomaniacal incompetence.
Andy Sandfoss (Cincinnati, OH)
As amusing as your musings are, Mrs. Clinton would have to be an even bugger narcissist than trump, with a heavy dose of masochism to boot, to do this.
Bobbinx (Charlottesville, Virginia)
Please: it is over. Move on.
Petey tonei (Ma)
Hillary was always surrounded by people from Hollywood and the entertainment industry. "Scandal" TV show stars and Meryl Streep and Katy Perry. Surely Hillary and Bill can get TV or Hollywood roles. They can warm up the crowd before the main show/event.
Elizabeth (Roslyn, New York)
While I thought this was amusing, the Clinton's need to retire from public office.
Sure they can come out and sit on a dias at the appropriate ceremony but beyond that they should just enjoy their grandchildren.
I say this because it is what the Democratic Party needs if it is to move forward in the next 4 years. Our message and ideals are great. But we need new messengers and lots of them. I was even disappointed when Pelosi and Schumer were still allowed to be in charge.
Of course the Democrats will need the 'seasoned' politicos to help move forward so I do not advocate the baby and bathwater. There are lots of Democrats not from NY who have been patient with the Clintons. We need new voices to engage America. Our ideals have been well received and we need a larger audience now more than ever.
Julia (NYC)
Schumer just started "being in charge!"
David A. (Brooklyn)
She could lead our secession from Russia's latest imperial acquisition.
Cody (Atlanta)
Forget mayor. Aim for governor. And what a terrific governor she'd make.
dianebarentine (Texas)
Oh good grief. It's a humor column guys. Lighten upI love the notion of the Mexican Dayboarade going past Trump Tower!
Here (There)
So you'd be cool if a columnist who supports President Trump fantasized about putting a nuclear waste dump in Chappaqua and otherwise harassing the Clintons.
Joel (Santa Cruz, CA)
Act locally. Perfect.
mike (NYC)
A ridiculous piece. And I love Hillary.
rlk (NY)
With all due respect this is certainly not the time for jokes or sarcasm.

The job of NYC mayor is simply not big enough or important enough for Hillary. It was before de Blasio ascended to the position but he has shown that his total incompetency hasn't hurt NYC that much.

It's time for Hillary to retire and babysit her grandkids...she's deserves a rest after decades of fighting for the tired, poor and under-served in our midst.

And with Trump in Washington, we need her (and Bill) to help make sure he represents all Americans with the same honor and dignity she would have.
John (Houston)
What a wonderful scenario. She can continue to extort money out of the global leaders at the international ball to fund the Clinton Foundation in her third and failed run for the White House. What could be better? The world waits with breathless wonder.
Bob T (Colorado)
Best thing I've read since That Night for lifting the spirit! Bruni much better in this vein. Highlight: 'she'd be the boss of him.' Hah! Taco trucks on Fifth a solid second.
chill528 (el sobrante, ca)
i love this. what an awesome thing that would be....
rudolf (new york)
Constantly having to read articles here on how to make fun of Trump shows the immaturity of this country. Trump was elected as our president fair and square so let's leave it at that.
ghdavid (Washington, DC)
But was it fair and square?
David. (Philadelphia)
"Trump won the election fair and square...." is the funniest thing I'll read all weekend. Vladimir Putin won our election, and there was nothing fair or square about it. You've actually seen Russia hijack our Presidential election with your own eyes, and you didn't even notice.
WJM (Oklahoma City)
Great piece, Frank, but I think Alec Baldwin should be Mayor. Now that would be fun!
KB (Brewster,NY)
This sounds like the pipe dream of someone who is distraught about the impending reign of terror fast approaching . Probably a fantasy better kept personal. An "overshare" as they say.

Clinton has had her say and her day. The only person who can probably give her back her political life would be Trump,If he actually becomes the disaster many of us are anticipating. But even that might not be enough. Trump's supporters are religious zealots. In god they don't necessarily trust, but they believe in Trump. Its religion taken to its irrational extreme.

Time to focus on how to survive the impending political storm. The next two years leading to the midterm elections may determine how much hope is available for the "newly" disenfranchised Americans. We now live in "the Other America" and we better find a leader of our own before too long.
Ervin (Michigan)
So let me get this straight. You think it would be appropriate to abuse political power in order to harass an individual, and to do it in such a way as to negatively impact thousands of others as well?

That's just sick and disgusting.
Harvey Wachtel (Kew Gardens)
He didn't say he thoughr it would be appropriate, only fun to fantasize about. C'mon everyone -- lighten up and lay o ff.
waxwing01 (Raymond)
excellent
Civres (Kingston NJ)
Only a New Yorker could think that being mayor of the city would be a kind of 'revenge' for losing the Presidency.

Hillary Clinton's public life should be over. I voted for her. I liked her. But Bernie would have smash Trump. And for that, I will never forgive her.
MetroJournalist (NY Metro Area)
The election was hacked and should be considered legally null and void. Given these circumstances, Trump should not be allowed to take office on January 20. Hold a new election just between Clinton and Trump. Monitor it.
Barbara (<br/>)
Few commenters her seem to understand that this column is a parody. Laughter is the best medicine. Thanks, Frank Bruni.
L’Osservatore (Fair Verona where we lay our scene)
This is indeed quite funny. I am relieved to see that the writers of so much Fake News screeds about what the political enemy might have done on his taxes or might have thought about some politically preferred class can eventually emerge with a different outlook.
But I won't waste my breath waiting for building commissars Paul & Charles to reward us with anything light.
Daveindiego (San Diego)
I'm sure many posted without reading the article, only the title. As I almost did.
Dom (Lunatopia)
i just don't get all this hillary fetish.... move one already.... if the democrat party has any chance in the future at least stick to better people then scrapping from the bottom of the clinton gutter.

bill was cool, but hillary... too old, no experience other then hand me downs from Bill and Obama... time to move on to greener pastures and let Hillary retire with grace.
Holly (San Luis Obispo, CA)
I'd love to see Hillary put her incredible intelligence, vast experience, and boundless respect for us and our country to work. I say, get moving, Hillary--we need all the help we can get.
efish134 (Brooklyn, NY)
"no experience", Dom, really?

Hillary was a senator longer than Obama, she was secretary of state, and she was First Lady. If you think all of that is "no experience" and "hand me downs" then you have no idea what is involved in these roles. Part of the misogynistic blinders that men have when it comes to what women do, can do and have done.

Instead, we have a man who is a sexual predator, business cheat, and Putin puppet coming to power. You think this is better? The swamp is full of even more swamp monsters.
artistcon3 (New Jersey)
Oh, thank you. I needed this.
Prometheus (Caucasus Mountains)
>

I see no compelling argument to turn off the fountain of folly at this point.
Ruben Cervera (Miami)
My first reaction was AHHHH!
riclys (Brooklyn, New York)
Hornswaggle of the highest order. Or just more therapy for a mangled bunch of hillarybots. This woman doesn't want a real job. She just wants a high perch and to sell her tweets (as in speeches) to the highest bidders. Even a cheating DNC and a revoltingly obsequious media couldn't get her over the top. Any comeback is dead on arrival.
ebmem (Memphis, TN)
There's a lot of money to be made in NY. Tammany Hall is famous. Dalasi wasn't sufficiently well connected to be allowed to avoid following the law, but Hillary has the Clinton Foundation to launder money. Her husband was able to buy her a Senate seat, he can certainly afford a mayoral nomination.

Donations to the Clinton Foundation have dropped off precipitously. If Hillary is running for mayor and Chelsea is running for Congress, donations should pick right back up.
JM (Los Angeles)
Cheating DNC? What a joke. Republicans let the Russians choose the president. What comes next?
Marcia Stephens (Yonkers, NY)
"Some choices aren't hard at all."
(Run away! Hillary, run away.!)
The Clintons bring themselves along wherever
they go---always vexing news.
Please don't encourage them or they will be back
on the stage clapping and pointing their fingers
and chronically campaigning again.
Their appetite for power and the spotlight
will never be satisfied, never be enough.
Even New York City would only be a dazzling
political "tool" for them to get back
into The White House, which is obviously
not going to happen now.
N B (Texas)
I hope she does it. She'd be great and her vaunted ambition has to have some outlet. She'll be too old to run for president in 2020 but mayor of New York would be great. Plus she would get to show what real leadership looks like when compared old yellow hair 2.
L’Osservatore (Fair Verona where we lay our scene)
Of course, she could have a massive stroke and still function perfectly well as a Party Regular on the federal bench.
How much brain power does reflexively voting pro-government, pro-fringe group, and anti-religion take? Chelsea's kid could do it.
Tony (NY)
She was too old to run in 2016 (as was Trump, as was Sanders)
Clinton is certainly setting her eyes on 2020, as is Sanders (when asked about 2020, Sanders evaded the question, he did not rule it out).
The Democrats need to look to the youth in their party.
psst (usa)
Yes!!! that would be perfect. She would certainly do a good job and the possibilities are endless for "working" with the Buffoon in Chief, Donald Trump.
Will (USA)
This is pure fantasy. There's going to be a real investigation and then Clinton is going to spend the rest of her life locked securely away in a federal prison.
carl99e (Wilmington, NC)
Frank, if this is your idea of trying to cheer things up a bit, I really do not think this is going to work. You need some rest and maybe a long vacation far, far away from all that consumes you now. Besides, who would buy it, she comes out all happy and bright, two fingers in the air for victory, nah, any more than she can go to back to giving $200K speeches on Wall Street. Ain't gonna happen.

Although to be fair, you seem to be dealing with the same malaise that many of us are dealing with. With time, a lot of time, maybe, maybe, it will get better. There is always hope. You remember hope, don't you? It is the opiate of the masses. They, opiates, seem to be quite popular.
Janet Campbell (California)
Hope, that will be gone after 1/20; as far as the opiates being popular, look to the rust belt, I hear they traded in hope for dope.
S.D.Keith (Birmigham, AL)
Why can't she retire? Why wouldn't she? I bet she'd get beat by de Blasio. After all, she got beat by DONALD TRUMP. And de Blasio is not, presumably, nearly as unlikable as Donald.

But go for it, New York. You wanted Hillary for President, who you adopted as your own, so you could imagine that you are lord over all the earth. Elect her mayor so she can represent the independent city-state of New York on the international stage. Whatever is good for your precious New York egos ought also be good for Hillary. Do it. Please.
Julie (New York, NY)
I think a lot of people here in New York, due to either personal encounters with Donald Trump, or due to things they heard from friends and family who'd had personal encounters with Trump, decided that Hillary was less awful than he was.

Local people here, in Nevada, in California, have more of a hometown perspective on him, and good reason not to want him in the White House. I think many people would agree that neither candidate who made it to the final stretch was a good one. I'm so sorry we didn't have anyone better to vote for in the general election.
Anna (New York)
She'd certainly be able to take away some of the embarrasment that Trump represents on the global stage.
David. (Philadelphia)
She didn't get beat by Donald Trump, she got beat by Vladimir Putin and a long-running Russian campaign to get Trump elected. Putin wanted a know-nothing pushover in the White House, and that's exactly what he got.
Christopher (Rillo)
Doesn't the city charter require a mayor to reside in the city? Will Hilary abandon her Chappaqua woods to endure living with the urban masses? She might view that as a worse sentence than political obscurity.
ellienyc (new york city)
All sorts of city employees live outside the city. It would seem like they should live here, but if there is a rule, it's not enforced. Most of the cops and firefighters, and many other public employees, live in the suburbs.
Hychkok (NY)
Erm, there's this place called Gracie Mansion where she can live. Plus, the residency requirement is easily filled. It's not like you have to be a resident of the city for years and years in order to run. She may have a NYC pied a Terre for all we know. Or she could move in with her daughter Chelsea who is a city resident.

A big problem though would be Bernie Bros, who still think that winning more votes in a primary doesn't mean you won the primary. They're sore losers and a lot of them live in nyc.
ebmem (Memphis, TN)
Too bad Chelsea sold her NYC home and bought in Westchester so she could run for Congress. They could have just traded mailing addresses. It's not like they'd actually have to move.
Sarah (Arlington, VA)
What a great column, Mr. Buni. You are the Andy Borowitz of the NYT.
ali nobari (vancouver, bc)
I agree that Mayor is too parochial for her. Governor would suit her better, and perhaps it may lead to a resurgence of the Democrats winning at the state level across the country.
Ted (S. Brunswick, NJ)
If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.
Susan (Mass)
Say it isn't so! First of all, she's NOT a New Yorker. She's a carpetbagger, and because she's Queen Hillary does not mean she can cake walk into the mayorship!! She and Bill just can't help themselves from their addiction to power, money, notoriety, and ever present attention and glorification. It's a sickness. Why can't she do some good for the country or the world.? If she's so powerful (not any more) why not help others, join peacekeeping foundations, care for the sick and hungry, tortured and homeless?? They are both despicable people...and only and forever about their narcissistic personalities.
Fran (NYC)
hillary was a fantastic senator and worked hard for the people of the state of NY whereas watching donald trump in nyc over the years has been a sickening display of greed, fraud (Trump U and his "charitable" foundation) and rampant narcissism
ebmem (Memphis, TN)
There's no money to be had in any of your suggestions, so she's not about to waste her time.
Eddie Lew (New York City)
So her foundation does not count for anything? Compare her to your soon to be president for charity work.
Macsperkins (USA)
A revenge fantasy in which Hillary Clinton gets into office (some office, *any* office) and immediately proceeds to abuse that power to pursue a personal vendetta? "There are so many scores she could settle, so many ways she could meddle... But above all there’d be the torturing of Trump," sez Mr. Bruni, gleefully rubbing his hands together. Bruni exposes, with absolute lack of irony, the pathetic and utter pettiness of Hillary's most devoted partisans. It's hard to criticize even der Donald from any sort of moral high ground when this sort of vileness keeps bubbling up on the Left.

Bob Wessner (Ann Arbr, MI)
Had a good chuckle over the comparison to a forest nymph.
DCBinNYC (NYC)
Don't even joke about it.

Based on the current mayor, NYC needs much more than a mere figurehead going through the motions.
Ignatius J. Reilly (New York, NY)
She has my vote, just as she did in 2000, 2008 and 2016.
George (Treasure Coast)
It wasn't enough in 2008 and 2016. As far as 2000, you can run a cucumber for the Senate in New York State and it would win easily.
vlad (nyc)
The upshot of the Trump tragedy is that Hillary lost and that Clintons are out of our lives.

I vote Dem, but please do not even joke about bringing her back. She is a hollow political corpse.
Harry Pearle (Rochester, NY)
I hope, I hope that the Clintons and Obamas become constant Trump critics.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this way, they can bring a sense of hope for the future of the Democratic Party and for the nation. Only through "Eternal vigilance" that we have liberty.

Bush had his War on TERROR. Now, we need a War on (Trump) ERROR

ebmem (Memphis, TN)
Democrats are sore losers and divisive, that's why they have lost 1001 elective offices in the last eight years.
Nikolai (NY)
Juvenile. Is this a high school newspaper or the NY Times?
Rock (Cape Cod)
The UN whats that? LOL
Michael Lindsay (St.Joseph, MI)
Here's a question: when will folks like Bruni get a grip on reality? Trump is the next president and deal with it! Being NYC mayor would be the very last thing Hillary would go for as she herself admitted, "I'm not a natural politician". Being mayor means being immersed in all the grit and grime of the city and loving to mix it up with people. This is most definitely not Hillary. Now, if you suggested Bill for mayor, I'd say he had the makeup for it, but zero inclination. Look, they can both go run the Foundation and rake in all the money their hearts desire. From their perspective, what's better than that?
Bates (MA)
I don't think there will be any "raking in all the money their hearts desire". Their "foundation" is the cash register for influence peddling. Now there is no influence.
Andy (New York, NY)
Much as I dislike Donald Trump, Mr. Bruni's proposal to harass him by overzealously enforcing local laws that affect his businesses and withholding city services (like pothole repair) as part of a vendetta is undemocratic and repugnant. Perhaps Mr. Bruni is kidding, and I am not as smart as I think.

Let the Clintons, with their centrist opportunism, exit American politics and let a new generation (led by young Bernie Sanders?) restore the Democratic party as the party that champions the American middle class.
Robert Koch (Irvine, CA)
Yes, I really do think that Mr. Bruni is kidding.
We need some good humor.
Steve Hunter (Seattle)
Bruni goes from bashing Hillary to being a booster in the course of 12 months.
BobbNT (Philadelphia, PA)
A move to NYC is in the cards if she runs for Mayor. Then I can vote for Hillary again and maybe, this time my vote would actually count.
hatt6720 (Canada)
Trump would take a mayoral job just to be petty. Clinton won't because she has the one thing Trump could never buy: an ounce of class.
ebmem (Memphis, TN)
But no more than an ounce.
Sandra (Westport, CT)
Frank...we need your sense of humor now more than ever! Thank you for some political levity in midst of the thickening swamp and endless toddler tweets from the Donald. Keep it coming, please!
Ladyiris (Wallingford, CT)
We could ask her to run for governor--of Connecticut!!
John (Los Angeles)
I asked my New Yorker friends who were in town over Christmas about how they like De Blasio since there's been so much negative reporting about him in the NYT. They said they like him, think he's doing a good job, and all their friends do too. The really don't understand why the NYT hates De Blasio so much, but they definitely did not think that De Blasio's NYC is going down the tubes or anything closer to that.

Three other problems with the reasoning here:

1) De Blasio is younger than Clinton, and Dems need to build up their pipeline with the next generation of candidates. We need more younger people in prominent offices, not fewer.

2) Even if De Blasio is weakened by investigations into campaign fundraising, HRC couldn't use that against him in a campaign. She just couldn't.

3) An unnecdssary Dem vs. Dem primary battle would further weaken the party's public perception with the appearance that it's descending into infighting and recriminations. An HRC primary challenge (or any other nasty primary fight) against De Blasio might end up weakening them both and opening the path for a Republican mayoral candidate who otherwise wouldn't have had a chance. How would you like those billboards and parade routes, Mr. Bruni?

Careful what you wish for.
JulieB (NYC)
you bring up the possibility that a primary would weaken the dems so much that a republican might win. Some people here think that because Trump won, NYC could turn red. Only a million voted in the deBlasio race, and he got 75% of that. I'll bet my life right now no republican can win. Bloomberg didn't count (not a red-state republican)
Maggie Mahar (NYC)
Yes, progressive New Yorkers do like De Blasio.

The NYT doesn't like him because many of their readers (mostly upper-middle
class and upper class white New Yorkers) were shocked that he became
their mayor.

These New Yorkers assumed that they would always choose who became Mayor of NYC

Like many outside of NYC they didn't people don't realize that in his city, white people are no longer in the majority.

Blacks,Hispanics, Asians and the many legal new immigrants that we have in NYC
now constitute the majority. And they put De Blasio in office

(Probably many who don't live in N.Y . don't know that his wife is African-American.
Their kids are half/white, half/black. Like Obama.)

You are absolutely right that we don't want a nasty Dem against Dem primary.

But De Blasio & HRC were once close. Did you know that he ran her campaign for the U.S.. Senate.

I realize that he took a long time to endorse her in her run for the presidency (I
think he was hoping that she would move further to the left--which she did.)

But I really don't think there is bad blood between them.

And I am sure that both want what so many of us want:
state and local governments that will check Trump, all of the time, every time.

Hillary care far more about the country than she cares about her own personal
vanity. (In this she is totally unlike Trump.)

After all that she has been through, I'm not sure that she would do this.

But if she can, the would be wonderful.
CC (The Coasts)
You must be friends with a very special group of NYers. Gotta say, NYers in my circles (various boroughs, socio-ec backgrounds, ages, etc) can't stand him.
slack (200m above sea level)
Frank, FRANK, stifle yerself!
"...next to the omnipresence of her face on billboards in all five boroughs."
No, thank you
Justin Tyme (Seattle)
What could Trump do? Accuse her of a conflict of interest? I recall some old saw about pots and kettles.

But honestly, it would be a step down for Hillary. Still, I guess that, for the good of the city she loves, she might be persuaded. She could act like she's doing the city a favor--that seemed to work pretty well in the general election.

And I'm not a New Yorker, but if DeBlasio delivered pre-school education and more affordable housing at the expense of dirtier streets and slower subways, who's to say his priorities are in the wrong place?

Oh, wait, I'm sorry--I forgot whose ox was being gored.
David Cherie (MN)
This piece is so petulant and boring! Bruni falsely would have you believe as if the current very liberal NY mayor, De Blasio, is in fact, Rudy Giuliani, and before his fallout with Trump! So boring!
fortson61 (washington dc)
Please, say it isn't true. We havehad more than enough of her. Please stay away -- forever!!
Me Cutler (New York)
I never cared for her she never gave me a reason to vote for her . Pls just go away and let the country move on. Clinton bye bye .
James (Folsom CA)
This sounds like pure Trump torture so is nearly Nirvana for me!
Suhas Vaze (Columbus, OH)
So Frank, New York should hire a liar that US did not? Why? Because liberals cannot keep their food down? Take Zantac or a chill pill. Meditate...see a yoga practitioner. Once again liberals like you are saying that she can definitely win. Why? Isn't that a familiar prediction that turned out to be wrong?
Patrice Stark (Atlanta GA)
Trump never lies
Mark T (NYC)
She would be a fantastic mayor. I don't think it will happen, and I'd feel terrible if she lost again. But I'd vote for her!

On the other hand, I don't quite understand all the dissatisfaction with Mayor DeBlasio. I have not noticed public spaces being dirtier since he took office as Mr. Bruni has. It does seem like there have been more homeless people, and that the subways have been more crowded, but I'm not sure how those things are due to any actions taken or not taken by the mayor. Subways keep getting more crowded as the city becomes more populated. And I haven't taken the 6 during rush hour since the new year, but I'm hoping the 2nd ave subway will have made a difference when I do.
Oleg P (New York)
Here is my prediction of the progress of events.

2016 - 79% of New Yorker's voted for Hillary during the presidential race.

Hillary Clinton becomes NY mayor.

2020 - 79% of New Yorker's voted for Trump reelection.

Run, Hillary Run! Up North. Towards Canada. Don't stop!
Rae (New Jersey)
Who besides the author of this column is suggesting this?

I voted for Hillary but her brand is expired to put it kindly. If I could put the Clintons on their own little Elba and never see them again that would be fine.

Aren't there other things to write about?
ellienyc (new york city)
Exactly. I don't know where this rumor came from, but it doesn't look like it's going to die anytime soon. God help us. I just wish someone would gently take Hillary aside and recommend a good therapist for her. Maybe Bruni needs one too.
Carsten Neumann (Dresden, Germany)
Napoleon successfully managed to return from Elba. If you want to make sure she doesn't return you must send her to St. Helena.
Bob Acker (Oakland)
Frank, what I have to admit is that this is the dumbest idea on wheels. She's about the only person in the world who could have lost to Trump. The sooner the Democrats put her where she belongs, i.e., in the past, the better. I only wish they'd done that a couple of years ago.
Pups (NYC)
What a lovely fantasy.
Robin Glazer (NYC)
Let's start a petition!!
JerryV (NYC)
Enough of her carpet bagging. When she ran for NY Senator, the Clintons moved out of NYC to make it appear that she would represent the State rather than just NYC. Now she should move back to the City to show that she is of the City? What does she know about running the City? How many times has she road the subway or a bus or tried to get a taxi. How many times has she shopped at a supermarket? How many time has she been to a public park? How many timers has she negotiated City offices, such as Motor Vehicles, the Jury system or any of the offices that make NYC run. How many times has she looked for an apartment on a budget? I voted for her before but never again. Honestly, I would rather have one of the Trumps run. At least they know the City they would be trying to govern.
Marjorie Siegel (San Francisco Bay area)
" How many times has she road the subway or a bus or tried to get a taxi. How many times has she shopped at a supermarket? How many time has she been to a public park? How many timers has she negotiated City offices, such as Motor Vehicles, the Jury system or any of the offices that make NYC run. How many times has she looked for an apartment on a budget? " And you think any of the Trumps have firsthand experience of these things?!
arcame (new mexico)
exactly and they love it too it's not just a place to exploit
Helen Elder (Washington state)
Go back and ask the same questions of Trump. What does Trump know about running the country? how many times has he ridden a bus, hailed a taxi or ridden the subway? Has he ever even been to a city park let alone Central Park? How many times has he been to City Hall? Or looked for an apartment? Just asking.....
Hillary Clinton knows plenty about running an organization, not the least of her experience being Secretary of State. And she was not born with a silver spoon in her mouth so she relates to real people not just billionaires.
I hope Hillary makes a comeback. She is not done and many of us want more.
If not as a politician then I hope she and Bill double down on the CGI and keep spreading American good will around the world where they are deeply respected and admired.
Jamie (Chicago)
Great job, Mr. Bruni. Any second now we can expect Mr. Trump to Tweet in with his condemnation of the column. Because Mr. Trump has zero sense of humor and no ability to laugh at himself , he won't get that the joke's on him. Well played.
Freedom Furgle (WV)
I did my best to gin up enthusiasm for Clinton during the presidential race, but my tank is now dry. Put me firmly in the "Anybody But Clinton" camp. I'll be standing in the section that overlaps with the "Anybody But Trump" camp.
b-caf (Norcal)
This isn't funny in the least.
PJW (NYC)
Frank please put down the martini's.
Enough of HRC, and frankly after this piece you as well.
jjustice (British Virgin Islands)
Thanks, Frank. That was fun, and a nice, if cynical, cap off to what has been a better week for we progressive elites: A Republican congress that locked, loaded and shot themselves in the foot. Pres. Obama taking a midnight ride through the capital to remind who was going to be left holding the bag for an upended health care system. NAACP leadership reenacting their glory days in Alabama. Bernie with Medicare/SS power points on the floor of the Senate.
I'm actually starting to feel hopeful.
deroesch (Pittsburgh, PA)
Ha. If only other politicians were as spitefully infantile as the president-elect.
boji3 (new york)
Actually when you think about it, she was born to be mayor of NYC. She would be eminently qualified for that job, more so than for the POTUS. She would be a great mayor. It would fit her personality perfectly, and she could scream as much as she wanted (New Yorkers are used to that). I'd vote for her.
Jeff Weitz (Westchester, NY)
She is tired while everyone else is fresh.
Marty (Massachusetts)
Childish.

You do know this is the New York Times you are writing for?

Move on.
CC (Chicago)
It is a wonderful fantasy, especially the potholes, and the Russian consulate experiencing power failures!
Smitaly (Rome, Italy)
Many thanks, Frank, for the absolutely delightful chuckle today. I so needed something to sooth the sting of what's been happening (only lately, mind) with the Prez-to-be. Mamma mia, we're in for a long, tough slog.
Anna (Brooklyn)
I love you, Frank, but this is the worst idea ever.

The Clinton Foundation and affiliated organizations do great work around the world - more than enough to keep Hillary and Bill occupied and effective for many years to come.

Let the rest of us move on to find new (and hopefully untainted) leaders to fight the many battles to come here at home.
Clarknt67 (Brooklyn)
So Hillary and/or her allies are thanking friend and political ally NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio for his support in the NY primary by messing with his reelection bid — which is already in full swing? Says everything. Never mind BDB stumped for her in NY primary — just trample all over him when he is down, just for fun and games! Loyalty is a one-way street in Clintonland and BDB now finds himself in the discard pile now that his usefulness to the Clinton machine has been exhausted. Lie with dogs Bill, you know the drill.
Rafael (Recife)
Do you like losing, Frank?
Don Max (Houston)
Perfect springboard for her 2020 Prez election campaign, right ? Really the Big Apple isn't finally ready for the Clintons to give it a rest by now ?
It really is all about celebrities for you folks isn't it ?
Amy Wallen (San Diego)
I think is a fabulous idea, Frank. Think of what Jerry Brown did for Oakland after his presidential runs. And what he has done as governor of CA. He is also now fighting Trump and keeping CA sane despite the Trumph (sic) rhetoric. Hillary could do the same or more. I'd vote for her if I were a NYC resident.
daniel r potter (san jose ca)
here is what he has done. since birth the man has never had a breath that was not subsidized by the public or religious dole. are you kidding
LM (NY, NY)
And I will if/when she euns.
Vermonter (Vermont)
I was wondering, does this fall into the"fake news" category?
Susie (<br/>)
What a nightmare! Frank Bruni might think it's fun to watch a politician take revenge, but what a precedent that would set.

And shame on the Dems for wanting to block a Mayor who has done so much for the programs the working class really care about -- like rent stabilization.

It's hard to be a Democrat these days. The party is practically Republican.
nom de guerre (Kirkwood, MO)
We're already watching a politician take revenge daily via social media.
If you're not sure of whom I refer, just ask Mitt Romney.
Termon (NYC)
Funneee. But I surely hope not. We need her on the national scene, not controlling rats and roaches in NYC. If only our great pool of talent could coalesce--Biden, Bill and Hillary, Carter... we need a team of elites to pull prevent America from sliding all the way into the gutter.
Bart Strupe (Pennsylvania)
Well, this scenario would certainly give Slick Willy access to a fresh supply of red meat.
A reader (Huntsville,AL)
Trump is way ahead of Bill.
jas2200 (Carlsbad, CA)
A lot of the Bernie bros are back, whining that Bernie was cheated again. We should all thank them, along with Putin and Comey, for saving us from the devil woman in the last election. I hope they all enjoy the next four years. I know Putin will when the sanctions are lifted and he gets his $500,000,000 oil deal.
Bill Paoli (Oakland, CA)
She just lost an election to an incompetent buffoon with no political experience. If the Democrats of New York want to lose the mayor's office to another backward idiot, they should definitely put HRC on the ticket.

I know the column is tongue firmly in cheek but the mere idea of her run for mayor of New York conjures the image of the final moment in "Carrie."
Vince Luschas (Ann Arbor, MI)
No.
Nicky (NJ)
For the love of god can we please move past the Bush and Clinton era?

I am so sick of these political dynasty families.

Give us some fresh blood. Give us someone that isn't sandbagged with decades of shameless self promotion. It's exhausting for me to watch and I imagine it's even more exhausting for the Clinton's.

Y'all had a good run. In fact, I'd even call it legendary. But all great quarterbacks have to retire at some point. Hang up the shoulder pads and helmet and clear space for new talent to emerge.
Hypatia (Santa Monica CA)
I think I just read wrong. Nicky wants "someone that isn't sandbagged with decades of shameless self promotion." Nicky Were you on another planet during the Trump years, and particularly during the campaign? Shameless self-promotion -- the Salesman-Elect wrote the book. None so blind that they will not see. True believers, wrapped in a righteous veil of ignorance.
Thomas D. (Brooklyn)
Wow... Yet more evidence The Times's columnists are so out of touch with the declining fortunes of the vast majority of Americans, and New Yorkers. What I would give to have as powerful a perch as a NYT columnist's, to be able to pick and choose topics and hopefully deliver some insight on matters of importance that affect us all... And yet you waste such a valuable platform for... THIS?

Can the NYT please, please, please hire a progressive columnist? a la Robert Reich or Cornel West or Keith Ellison or Noam Chomsky? Then perhaps we could begin reading one columnist's (again -- just asking for one here) smart person's thoughts about our disastrous health care apparatus, corrupt political system, gross amounts of income inequality, corporate hegemony, and so on? You know, REAL issues that affect us all?

During the Dem primary, The NYT's columnists were pro-Hillary messaging all the time. Now I feel as if they don't know what to do with themselves other than trash Trump voters as a monolith, find new scapegoats for Hillary's epic defeat and express shock at just how awful Trump is.

And yes, Trump IS awful. But it's time for a new and progressive approach to our country's problems if we're going to beat him, and improve Americans' lives, and there's lots of work to do.

Columns like this not only don't help -- they make me feel more and more discouraged that The Times truly has lost its way and is heading off into the sunset.
altecocker (The Sea Ranch)
Please pray to whatever god you may or may not believe in that Frank Bruni got this from The Onion. I feel like Henry II referring to Becket: Is there no one who will rid me of this troublesome candidate? She was perhaps the only candidate the Democrats could have nominated who could have lost to that repugnant carbuncle who won. While I believe that her heart is in the right place, she is a serial liar and a deeply flawed candidate. And I'm a very liberal Dem. But I believe that she should be consigned to the dustbin of history and the ignominy that that entails.
KL (Matthews, NC)
Ah, well we can all dream, can't we.

Revenge is dish best served cold.
phil morse (cambridge, ma)
And there was something in the news today about how zombies could wipe out the human population in a month. I think I'd rather have the zombies.
NoCalSue (Oakland)
Nope. Time for Hillary to pack her bags and go home. What part of "new" and "revolution" aren't we getting? This isn't business as usual. I voted for her and I have bid her farewell. It's time for the Dems to cultivate new, invigorated leaders. Let's put this election into the rear view mirror as quickly as possible. Onward and forward.
JeanBee (Virginia)
Hil(l)arious column. It IS fun to imagine Hillary making DT's life miserable, but I can't see her taking such a come-down in status, and I don't get at all why the RW has made the NYC mayoralty their latest Hillary-bashing cause du jour.

Still, if she decides to go for it, she'll win in a landslide and do her customary great job in office. As a non-New Yorker, I'm for it only if it somehow helps her win the presidency in 2020, and while I can see some possibilities, I honestly don't see it being a sure thing.
Jane (Connecticut)
I think she'd be a good choice...not to seek revenge, but to put her expertise to work for women and families, for people of color, for the poor, the homeless, the immigrants, the handicapped, the veterans....all those that have been put down and mocked by our president to be. I think she could be a wonderful example of one who could work across the table with Wall Street and the needs of the city. Age is not an issue...especially since women usually outlive men. She has the disposition and the expertise. Go, Hillary, go!
RM (N.Y.)
Mayor of NYC? She's a loser and there isn't anything New Yorker's hate more than a loser. As a life-long registered Democrat, I can say that Hillary Clinton, did not, and will never get this vote. And I KNOW I'm not alone in that sentiment.

She was touted as the “most qualified Presidential candidate,” yet she couldn't even keep her job as Sec of State she made such a mess of things. Yeah, a real expert on foreign policy. They had to send in John Kerry to clean up the pathetic mess she made of everything. She was a carpetbagger Senator of no consequence and a disaster as Sec of State; a job that was handed to her as a consolation prize in a backroom deal with Obama to help him win the election.

Her main achievement in all her years in public office: funneling bucket-loads of Biz to the Foundation. Hillary is nothing but a grotesque, sanctimonious, dishonest, incompetent political hack; a point that resonated with many of us who got beyond the PR razzmatazz and clearly saw Hillary for what she was and always will be: a fraud.

The Tavis Smiley interview with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Chris Hedges, who worked for 15 years as a foreign correspondent for the New York Times, paints an unfavorable but accurate picture of Hillary that's well worth watching: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/tavissmiley/interviews/journalist-chris-hedges-2/

Naomi Klein also got it right: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/nov/09/rise-of-the-davos-...
Lee (Arkansas)
In reply to RM:
This sounds like a full bushel of sour grapes to me. You must be one of those who "couldn't vote for Mrs Clinton because she lied" and then proceeded to vote for the biggest liar of all..

Enjoy the coming few years.
RM (N.Y.)
@Lee: Nope, not sour grapes. And I'm proud to say I didn't vote for either of them.

Unlike you, I voted my conscience. I vote and stand by what I believe in, not blindly follow a corrupt, dirty party, over the cliff.

We got what we got in large part due to the corruption and shortsightedness of the DNC, not to mention the abject stupidity of people like yourself who followed the program like dutiful "Hillarybot" zombies.

Perhaps, in the end, this country gets what it deserves.
gblico (paris)
Here we go again! Why doesn't the NY Times etc just leave the poor woman alone and let her to ride into the sunset? If Hillary didn't exist, you'd probably need to invent her! A pox on all your houses!!
Gwe (Ny)
I did not think it was possible for my opinion of Donald Trump to get any lower than it already was--but I was wrong.

Just today, alone, he's behaved like a butt head, a doofus, a joke and a lightweight. I have an 8 year old nephew that I honestly and genuinely believe is more mature than Donald Trump. From his idiotic tweets about the Apprentice, to his bluster about the Russian hackers to the NYT only to rescind them after getting briefed: he is an absolute moron.

An absolute and utter joke of a human being.

......and all of it in full and embarrassing display for the world to see.
Prof Emeritus NYC (NYC)
Goodness, no! We had thought we had seen the end of the crooked Clintons. Please, we beg you, do not inflict yourselves on our poor, beleaguered city. It's been hard enough with Mayor De Blasio.
Mel (Glasser)
Say it ain't so. However taking a second position like Mayor suits her. Not good enough to be our President. Hillary should take whatever she can get. Maybe a membership at Orange theory might be a start. DeBlasio married to a Black woman so Hills won't get the Black vote. He is genuine. She does it for theater.
The Voice Of Reason (New York)
This made me smile, if only for a while :)
Manning (Atlanta)
This is most fun column I've read in months, maybe years. Mr. Bruni, you have outdone yourself. Joy comes well in such a needy time, says Shakespeare's Juliet. Common sense, indisputable facts (even in the post-truth era), and all served up with a rollicking sense of wit and irony that are well-nigh irresistible. Bravo, Frank. Go, Hillary. As the late Debbie Reynolds sang in "The Unsinkable Molly Brown,"--I ain't down yet!
Lavender Moon (Austin, TX)
I'd rather see her be mayor of Moscow, and annoy the heck out of Putin.
AC (New York)
Oh wow...that would be a NYC I would be happier to live in. Shatter that glass ceiling, girl!
william (boston)
Or better yet, let NY elect a Republican mayor again. The last two were highly competent.
J. Ó Muirgheasa (New York, NY)
What is wrong with you people? Let the Clintons take their money and get out of politics forever, they have done enough damage.
srwdm (Boston)
Bruni,

Can't you cool it.

You missed the boat by signing on with the deeply flawed and historically unpopular Hillary Clinton—instead of the singular gift to politics known as Bernie Sanders.
JJ (Chicago)
Hear, hear!!
Hypatia (Santa Monica CA)
The folks you want to address are the local and gubernatorial forces that hastily passed illegal measures to prevent literally hundreds of thousands of eligible voters to cast their ballots for Hilla. Had these been admitted and fairly counted, the Electoral College results might have been very different. And we might have a tough, experienced leader who cared about people, not just money -- and who had a strong sense of self rather than a fragile publicity hound egotist.
nb (Madison)
The county is entering a period that will become known as The Emergency. And some democrats are figuring out where to get their next GAME on.

Alliteration be damned. Stop with the "pantsuit" joke term. Men and women wear suits. Got it? You date yourself. Or are you now doing stand-up?
zula (new york)
True. Men have been wearing "pantsuits" for most of recorded history. They are just "suits."
BostonBrave (Maine)
"Who would want to be the President of the United States when you can be mayor of New York City?"

A nice read, but oh, how sad to have to fantasize this way to escape for a second the horrifying reality...
sjs (Bridgeport, CT)
Sounds like a good idea to me
i's the boy (Canada)
Please!
Susan (Kentucky)
This would be so amazing!!! I feel better than I have since The Catastrophe.
jhbev (Western NC)
De Blasio could do all the things Bruni drools over.
That might get him re-elected!
C. Richard (NY)
It's a sad joke to see the NYT ads shouting "responsible" and "essential" journalism, and then to come upon a piece of silly, sloppy fluff like this.
Janet (Salt Lake City, UT)
Good grief! Frank Bruni is not a journalist. He is an opinion writer, hence the placement of his column on the "opinions" page.
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
It's an Op-Ed.
The Trump years will be punishment enough with no laffs.
zula (new york)
She'd be a great mayor. It's good idea1
Mack (Los Angeles CA)
Hillary and Bill in Gracie Mansion: brings to mind Wagner and DeSapio, Walker and Hines.
James Panico (Tucson, AZ)
Mr. Bruni, this is not only a brilliant idea, but the article itself is hilarious! Thanks
geri (Staten Island)
Absolutely brilliant idea!! Especially the part about her hobnobbing with the UN crowd when they are in town.
That would really tick off the Donald since he always likes to be the center of attention!
Go Hillary!!!
carl bumba (mo-ozarks)
Since New York Democrats allowed Hillary to use their state to further her political ambition - forcing the entire country to endure her two candidacies - it seems fitting that she ends up there. New York Democrats need to do some soul searching..... and start reading some wikileaks.
JJ (Chicago)
Ha ha ha. Great comment.
weary traveller (USA)
Its really unfortunate that the Dems cannot find a better candidate than Hillary.
Seriously we do not wish to lose WH again .
I am not sure why but USA had rejected Hillary to be president. Yes we love her as shown by popular votes but do not wish her to be our president is evident too!

We do not want another worse than Donald Trump GOP candidate win !
I believe 8 years should be enough to redo that mistake!!
Hypatia (Santa Monica CA)
Have you given a moment of thought to what the country will be in 8 years of a juvenile narcicisst who know nothing and cares nothing about the job that was handed to him by foreign and local intervention?

Do you think YOUR family will be excempt from the sorrows broght on us by the neo-Fascists streaming through the revolving door into the places of power. Where they will continue, as they did in their corporate incarnations, to wreck our enviroment, deprive millions of health care, export jobs to foreign countries, corrupt the political process, constrain our civil liberties, interfere with relationships with other countries and much, much more!

It has taken more than 40 years to create the situation we are in now. Do you really think that 8, or even 4 years will suffice to reverse the carefully-crafted take-over of our country?
Kwame Babatunde (New York, NY)
I'd hope that the NYT would know that "the subways [feeling] more packed" is an issue of the MTA, which is run by the State of New York. The Mayor has no operational influence over the subways, and thus can't be blamed for their status.
Ysais Martinez (Columbus, OH)
Out of the so many important things a New York Times journalist can write about in these troubled times and you write a caricature of a column?
Brian (Minneapolis)
If you read this article there is one main reason and three secondary reasons for Clinton to run for mayor. The first has to do with an ego that can't let her exist on the sidelines. The next three, according to little Frankie Bruni deal with vindictiveness and payback. Imagine running for any office so you could get even with DeBlasio, Weiner and Trump. This article would receive an F in any college writing course for it's ridiculousness
Theatre Kid (New York)
And a "D" to your post. "Its" in this context does not have an apostrophe (ya know: possessive vs. contraction?)
Brian (Minneapolis)
Thanks for the grammar lesson.
retired guy (Alexandria)
New Yorkers shouldn't be so greedy. Let her run for Mayor of Chicago. She is from Chicago, after all. And what with its murder rate and financial challenges, Chicago needs all the help it can get.
Peezy (The Great Northwest)
Please leave this woman alone.

After the way the NYT smeared her with innuendo and outright lies for the last two years, to now try to goad her into re-entering politics, is crass and disgusting.

Why should she run for office again? To give you people another chance to kneecap her? Get lost.
European in NY (New York, ny)
Hillary Clinton is a brand name, great at raising money, but an empty suit and a scandal magnet.

During her run as a NYC senator she also had a private server! She presided over the WS destruction of the economy; she brought the biggest Indian Outsourcer, because Chelsea worked for the company that consulted TATA Industries, McKinsey.

During her Presidential campaign HRC even Podesta complained about her lack of ideas. I've lived in USA for only 15 years, but I would have come with many more ideas for improvement than she did!

HRC recites sounds competent as she makes generic promises.

But NYC needs someone with ideas, who will fight for the people, in truth, not in soundbites. Moderate income housing was left to run out by DiBlasio, and I lost my home. While rents went up and even successful professionals in their 50s live with roommates, the democratic governor was busy to block New Yorkers from using Airbnb and to offer another giveaway to the big lanlords!

Everything in NYC is done for the benefit of the very wealthy, who come with their own projects and requests for approval. HRC would be a great mayor for them, and suffer nothing for her lack of ideas and real commitment.

(Had she stood up sincerely for ONE single hotly issue, such as SINGLE PAYER or Transparency/Fixed Healthcare Prices that can be browsed like airplane tickets for the best deal, or allow Gov to negotiate drug prices, HRC would have won with half her staff and campaign budget!!!)
Prushnitz (Laguna Woods, CA)
Oh - if only dreams REALLY came true! This would be one that should. Although "only" a mayor, this would be a tremendous spotlight shining on the person who should have been our President-elect.
Louis (New Jersey)
The general consensus among Democrats is that Donald Trump is the absolute worst and most unqualified person to ever be elected president. He is a despicable human being, a racist, a misogynist, a narcissist, and many other "ists" that are too numerous to name. During his campaign, he said things that were deemed deplorable. And yet... he still beat Hilary.

So I ask you: why on earth would Democrats want Hilary to run for any office? Is there no-one better within the liberal ranks?
Hk (06419)
God save us.
Martin (Germany)
I take it that most of this was in jest. I can only hope so, because this kind of childish revenge is something one would associate with DJT (or the GOP in general) but not a woman as accomplished as Secretary Clinton.

On the other hand: what's wrong with the title of "Governor"? If Gov. Cuomo really wants to go after DJT (and what Democrat wouldn't!) there would be a opening that - at least in title - would be superior and avoid most conflicts with DJT.

And the public will - IMHO - not view the upcoming conflicts between DJT and "insert-name-here-come-one-come-all" as funny for very long. We've all seen and heard and read enough of this man-child already.

It's one thing to lose, it's another to be a sore loser...
Nan Socolow (West Palm Beach, FL)
Crikey, Frank, what a yuge buncha pipe dreams about Hillary Clinton running for Mayor of Manahatta in De Blasio's stead. Fun? not! Surely this is your idea of a whoopee cushion joke on your readers. Jeezey Peezey, what would Walker, Wagner, Impellitteri, Bermuda Mike, Dinkins, Lindsay, Beame and Fiorella say? Should she raise her arms like Ed Koch on the Fire Island Ferry and say "How'm I doing?" Mrs. Clinton would do better to challenge Andrew Cuomo for the Governorship of New York State - her home - Chappaqua - for the past 16 years (and they bought a 2nd $1.1M house there in September, 2016, a presidential compound like Kennebunkport or Mar-a-lago for an incipient President? Perhaps Hillary might could, might should, slip back into her suburban life and wife role of Mom, Granny and former First Lady of Arkansas, First Lady of the United States, Senator from New York, Secretary of State for President Obama. Surely, she has earned sufficient kudos, laurels and kowtows and dough to last her the rest of her life. And she has lived long enough to comb grey (highlighted blondine) hair! Time to stop pulling our chains, Frank. Pie in the sky like Hillary running for Mayor of Trump City is no longer fascinating for we the people who are dealing with the Inauguration and installation of the frightening 45th President of our United States.
HN (Philadelphia)
Why not New York State governor?
Nial McCabe (Andover, NJ)
Kids! It's humor! Calm down!

In my mind's fantasy I would love it (and I bet some of you holier-than-thou's would too!).

But Hillary is a serious person who would never stoop to Chistie or Trump-level behavior.
Bruni knows that. He's just having fun. It ain't gonna happen. Relax.
farhorizons (philadelphia)
Let it go, Frank! Let HER go. She was never all that popular except with those who wanted a woman, any woman, to be elected president. She chose to remain Bill's wife despite his public humiliation of her and their daughter. Now let her be Bill's wife (if there's anything at all left in that for her).
Rich (BOston)
I'm still with her, Hillary haters be damned.
Charles (Chicago)
It's certainly interesting that while Clinton's campaign slogan was "I'm with her," Sanders' slogan was "Not me. Us."
Brian Boru (New Haven, CT)
If Ms. Hillary needs a nominal residence within City limits in order to run for Mayor, maybe she could get a unit at Trump Tower itself, where her Secret Service detail could talk shop with the Donald's...
RCR (USA)
Now that would be a hoot wouldn't it.
GWPDA (AZ)
I love it. Do it!
Jeff W (Atwater Village, CA)
I love it!brilliant and what a plus for all New Yorkers
Toni B (New York, NY)
Bruni forgot to mention the other great aspect - Giuliani would lose his mind (more of it)!
Pipecleanerarms (Seattle)
Put the plug in the jug America, your thirst for a Bush/Clinton race led to Trump. We have exhausted this avenue and found what happens when you drink the soft stuff, eventually, like a gateway drug, you end up bottoming out on the hard stuff.

Relapse at your own peril... I think that now we understand exactly how progressive this disease is. Stay strong/Stay sober.
ordell robbie (LA)
So she might run for Mayor. Does she really want to follow in Anthony Wiener's shoes?
Tim Nelson (Seattle)
I love it!
Leslie Prufrock (41deg n)
the column pre-supposes that HRC lost her mind -very doubtful!
Robert (Brooklyn, NY)
Give me a break. You are suggesting politics as a form of revenge? I know it happens, but I would hope the NYTimes was above that.
Ijahru (Providence)
What a dumb piece. Clinton wasn't a true New Yorker when she ran for Senate to represent Wall St. I am amazed the NY Times publishes such drivel. And folks wonder why middle America rejects the coastal elitists.
DavidF (NYC)
No! Just make her go away!
Jayday (Manhattan)
Power corrupts; the power of city governments corrupts cities absolutely. New York City needs Hillary Clinton, like a fish needs a bicycle.

Run, Hilary, run! We're following you!
David (Aurora, CO)
Don't you have more substantive things to write about, Frank?

Oh, I see. You don't.
GNewsom (USA)
Yea.
just Robert (Colorado)
How nostalgic some of us are for Hillary! She is tough, but I often wonder what goes on underneath that hard façade. Her abuse at the hands of the violent misogynist Trump should not go un repaid. If the NY mayoralty can do it for her, I would say more power to her. And I am pretty sure she would not have to be concerned about email servers. You are not forgotten Hillary.
BL (Austin TX)
I'll move to NYC just to vote for her!
PJ (Reiman)
Aren't the subways the domain of NY State? I don't think it's fair to blame DeBlasio for this. That's on Cuomo and Albany, wrong as that is.
JR CAPTAIN PACIFIC (Newport Beach)
I agree, Gail Collins would be a treat!!
Simon Sez (Maryland)
Get over it.

She lost.
Jimmy (Greenville, North Carolina)
Hillary would be like a Queen as New York Mayor. It would be a blessing to liberals everywhere.
Gloria B. (Lincoln, Nebraska)
HRC as mayor of NYC is the first faint glimmer of light in the darkness that descended on Nov. 8.
Jrshirl (Catskill, New York)
What moronic, mechanical, shallow, republican stupidity! The NYT, with it's 3 articles per/day on yet another Trump stupidity (or bald-faced lie come home to roost) sinks to the depths of its journalistic potential. How sad and opportunistic the giants who have, up to now, protected our democratic freedoms have become!

Sad! Sad! Sad!
Tom Holland (Boston)
More carpetbagging by the Clintons?
Robert Dana (Princeton)
What an idiotic column. You have been given this space and an opportunity few others have had, and this?

Face it. The woman is incompetent. On two occasions she let a sure victory slip away; 2008, 2016. Think of the errors she would have made as POTUS or Mayor of NYC.

Enough.
Tronald Dump (Moscow)
Comrade Trump will be a great leader, the Russians can't be wrong.
Claire (San Francisco)
NY doesn't need her. The south needs her. Why don't she and Bill return to Arkansas and help out there? She could turn around her insider image and broaden the Dem base if she did that.
Joe Barnett (Sacramento)
I would rather see her Governor of New York.
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
Just Do It.
Michael Rossano (New York)
Perhaps a New Yorker should become mayor of our city.
Linda (New York)
Stop this Frank, Please don't run, Hillary. You will only keep other up and coming women and men who deserve a chance from gaining a foothold in the new generation's political future. You got what you deserved. A chance at victory and you lost witheringly. Run for Governor of California. But, since her aides are demurring, it is proof positive that she will run for Mayor. She is too old and establishment. We need new blood.
Meredith (NYC)
I just love Hillary, because what ever she does she does well and knows her stuff.
Susan (Toms River, NJ)
Hillary would win handily. 79% of New Yorkers voted for her. It would be sweet revenge for them to vote her into an office where she could take perfectly legitimate actions that would drive him out of his mind. Rerouting the Mexican Day Parade past Trump Tower? Sure, the Secret Service would never allow it, but still. Disappear all copies of "The Art of the Deal" from the NYPL and put "Hard Choices" and "It Takes a Village" up front? She's too classy to do that, but he'll pull her books out of Library of Congress.

And it would serve Anthony Weiner right.
Stef (NH)
And Peyton Manning is returning to quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.
Oh, I forgot. He left at the peak of his career.
It is over, people.
OVER.
LPT (Maryland)
Brilliant!
Rango (California)
And Bill could be the Rockettes Czar. Who better qualified?
ymd (New Jersey)
Seriously? It makes Mr. Bruni giddy with excitement to imagine someone getting elected to office and then using that power to settle scores? Isn't this exactly what Americans have grown sick of in politics?
DonnaP (Brooklyn)
Although she was cheated in an unfair fight, the world is still Hillary's oyster. I would back her for mayor or, better yet, governor. New York needs someone to clean up Albany and she might just be the person to do it.

She'll be back. Run, Hillary, run!
Victor (Boston)
Don't blame De Blasio for crowded subways. The MTA is run by the state.
rob (amsterdam)
Wit finally arrives!
NH (Dallas)
If Hillary became mayor, trump couldn't help but focus solely on her and he might do less damage elsewhere. And it would be so much fun to watch...like their debates on steroids!
George (Central NJ)
I know it would never happen. But oh Mr. Bruni, thank you for making me feel good if only for a few moments. I would love to see Hillary wipe the streets with Trump.
Mark (Brooklyn)
Oh yes, let us please take the worst decision the Democratic Party ever made and make her our own. That'll really show those heartland voters how in-touch with the American public the Democratic Party and the people in power in NYC are. Then she'll be SURE to win when she runs for president, again, in 2020.
996GT3RS (PA)
I think a better idea is for Hillary to join a high-powered NYC law firm and spend her days litigating Don the Con and his cronies into obsolescence!!!
Larry (Miami Beach)
With two weeks to go until a Trump administration, nothing about the situation makes me laugh.

Not Alec Baldwin, not Andy Borowitz, and not even Frank Bruni's clever, witty piece.

Sorry.
B. DdV (Paris)
If Hillary Clinton does not run for New York, France would dream to elect her as it's President. American people, you have been fools and fooled.
The Andologist (Colorado)
Snark still reigns at NYTimes and is as tiresome as Clinton but hey, Clinton would be perfect as NYC mayor.

Just let DeBlasio know he has to step down :))
Shamu (TN)
Hillary Clinton should just go quietly into the night, and not try to be anything anymore. She's done enough damage to the Democratic Party.
She should just be grandma to Chelsea's kids.
Farewell to Clintonism!
Luke (NYC)
Ugh, such a sad column. She lost - get over it, move on. Democrats need new faces and new ideas, not more of the same.

I never want to see HRC on TV again, and would never vote for her for mayor. If that is your fantasy, you need help.
Brice C. Showell (Philadelphia)
The last thing Hillary Clinton needs on her political resume is a loss to the current mayor of New York - the one married to a black ex-bisexual with cahones
Me (My Home)
I am usually a fan of Frank Bruni but this is almost unbearably childish. And even if it made sense - doesn't the mayor have to live somewhere in the five boroughs? Or are we thinking of more carpetbagging?
Maxwell De Winter (N.Y.C.)
HRC doesn't know the difference between City Hall and Gracie Mansion or Harlem and Tribeca! Let the poor woman rest!
fdsajkl (california)
No. Give it a rest already. Sheesh.
john (englewood, nj)
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I love you, Frank Bruni.
KR (CA)
She needs to take up painting like W.
Petey tonei (Ma)
Both Clintons are friends of Stephen Spielberg, Barbra Streisand and Hollywood stars galore. Surely they can get acting roles.
underhill (ann arbor, michigan)
anything that would enrage Trump has to be a good thing....
kateconover (huxley)
God, I love Frank Bruni.
leobatfish (gainesville, tx)
Delusional writer. How does a hillbilly from Arkansas claim status as a New Yorker?
MikeInMi (SE Michigan)
Every time I try to get out, they keep pulling me back in . . .
AndyP (Cleveland)
Where do I contribute to Hillary's mayoral campaign?
DS (CT)
The left is officially unhinged!
A reader (Huntsville,AL)
The striking ring of truth about this is that Hillary really does seem like a New Yorker. Great idea.
James (Cornwall on Hudson)
Brilliant! And as a result of such an impassioned, eloquent and convincing case made by you, Mr. Bruni, I say you should be her campaign manager. I'm not joking--and neither were you! HRC for NYC!
