I have been overloaded MANY times. I'm in 3 AP/Advanced classes this year as a sophomore, and it can be ridiculous sometimes. My AP Calculus 1 class isn't too bad, maybe just a medium-sized sheet over 2 days, but my other 2 classes are horrific at points. AP Bio, for example, gives me lengthy study guides and multiple packets per unit, which are only 1-1.5 weeks long. Enriched English is MUCH worse, though. On most nights now, I end up with an hour or more in JUST THAT CLASS EVERY NIGHT. I have friends in the same class but with different teachers, and they have no issues, so it's probably my teacher, who also teaches Newspaper. I can't stand 4 hours of homework a night for ONLY 1-2 CLASSES. Our education system needs to find a way to lower the load or just remove HW all together. Students are as stressed as 1950's mental institute patients, and that is not acceptable. Also, I don't play sports, but I have a life w/ guitar and my family, and I would like to have a little more time with that stuff as well.

I have been pretty lucky to never have been overloaded with homework. I am on the pre-IB track, in three AP classes, and play a sport so I consider myself to be a lucky exception to the multitude of high-schoolers who find themselves up into the late hours of the night finishing mindless assignments and studying for tests. I think one of the reasons for this is that I started early- I have always really liked homework, and as my parents love to remind me, I started asking for it on the third day of preschool.
I think the National Education Association is right to assign homework amounts due to grade, because kids should never have so much homework that they do not have time to go outside, play a sport, or have fun. Homework should be a reinforcement of learning, but the assignments should be applicable to what they are learning, and they should not take up more than three hours in total. Homework should not consume student’s free time.

I am an 8th grade student and let me tell you I am not the best student. All the homework I get leaves me not time to reveiw what I need to or just plan study

I am a ninth grade student and I can say that this year so far homework have not been so, so bad overall, however many times through out my schooling homework had become unbearable often times getting in the way of other after school activities. One time last year I got a concussion and the amount of work that I had to make up was insane and there is just no time to get it done.

I am in 8th grade and my teachers have compiled a lot of homework. On their own, each class has a reasonable amount of homework, but with all of them at the same time? That's a different subject. I deal with 5 hours of Mathia, a reading packet, a couple long math problems, a small CNN-10 research paper-thing, and a science safety passage. One at a time would be easy, but with only 45 minutes to learn, and start the homework in class without being able to write down any notes because the teacher writes to fast is to much for one person to handle. I am in a rush in the morning to finish my homework before the bell rings to start class on less than the recommended amount of sleep.
@Alanna my name is alana
A reading assignment well that's wrong unless its like read for 20 min a day and fill out what you read then that's fair my brothers get the same amount and they're fine with it. it all depends on how much dedication is put into the subject
I'm in eighth grade in middle school right now and I only have 7 classes in total for one day of school. After all those classes are done and I come home to finish up homework, I have probably twice the amount of homework than the amount of time I spent in each class. It is especially hard for me to complete homework because of all the activities I do after school. I come back home at around 6 o' clock est, and my school ends at 3, so I have limited time to do homework before 10 o' clock. It would be great if teachers would just give us a break and do some of the assignments during school hours.
I'm a freshman in high school, about three months in and I can relate to staying up till 3 am finishing homework assignments. In total, I get about 70+ pages to read and then I have to either do annotations on them or charts depending on which subject the homework is from. My parents always say, "oh it's just because you're an honors student", but that so wrong. I have friends in CPA/CPB classes and they get the exact amount of work I do. It really takes a huge toll on my mental health. There is no time where I'm not stressing. I never have time to hang out with friends or do sports. My schedule for the entire week (minus Sunday) is wake up, go to school(not Saturdays obviously), do homework, sleep. I would really like to have some time to myself.

@Isa I have the same problem as you do! except the fact that I'm in 8th grade and your a freshman in high school.

I understand why there is homework, but most things you learn are useless and too much I will never need to know if carbon and lithium can go together or not so why should I be sent home with 3 things of homework over things that are useless to me.
The real concern with homework isn't individual research papers and other assignments that are done by the individual only. It's the group projects. If you have good skills in a particular area, people will take advantage of you. There have been many times that I've had to do all the work for a group project in order to get the grade. And the reality is teachers and professors don't care if people don't do their end of the bargain. Professors in college don't care about you at all.
I just started 7th grade, I’m not even a week into the school year and I’m getting far more homework that I ever had last year. Keep in mind that I’ve only been in school for 3 days now! While I can’t relate to the people that stay up til 3 AM for a letter on a piece of paper, the amount of homework I’ve been receiving is ridiculous! I think homework is an okay conception paper, but applying it to the real world where people all learn at different paces and sometimes can’t comprehend things on their own doesn’t really work all that well. Just on the second day of school I was in my bed bawling because I couldn’t complete this set of problems that everyone in the class I took seemed to understand so easily. The SECOND DAY OF MIDDLE SCHOOL. Homework doesn’t help for me. Some people may like it, but I think it’s just something that makes children hate school even more.

I’ve just started my freshman year of highschool. I’ve been assigned gigantic loads of homework before, but never this early. It’s been, what, not even three weeks and I’m already up until 12-3AM frantically trying to complete assignments? I have no extra time for family or fun, because my whole life right now evolves around school and a letter grade. A letter is keeping me away from my family. A LETTER. If this is what it’s come to, where I can’t even spend a simple night watching a movie with my family or eat dinner because I have to many assignments, I don’t know what to do. This is an issue for 97% of the children of America. It needs to be fixed, I’m wasting away for a piece of the Alphabet.

There’s currently 4 days left of school for me before summer vacation. This weekend I have multiple assignments in every class. I don’t have time to spend time with my family. Every night I’m up till 9-10 o’clock working on homework assignments; and I also play sports. I never have time for extra things or fun. It gets tiring.
I'm actually doing a project right now about too much homework and most of the teachers assign an okay amount of homework but this one teacher likes to give us three packets and a reading assignment on the nights we have giant projects do.
Extra homework is truly a problem. 90% of high school students don't get the recommended amount f sleep.
Home work is great and all but it is true that teachers give to much. there should only be a small review of what was learned in class as home work. But I think it's also about how the student's time management and discipline is. In the 8th grade it was still easy, I did 3 hours of homework and played video games and slept. But once into high school, I can never go to sleep earlier than 11:00 because my body has become so used to staying up late. Most days I stay up to 12:00, but during wrestling season I usually stay up 'till 3 in the morning. I think teachers need to consider that there is more than one class giving homework and that the student also has sports or something.

Preach Tim!
Homework is a complete waste of time for society. Who even thought up the idea of homework? This takes so much time out of a person's day. We all have a life beyond school, so why are we dedicating some of our time off of school? They basically want us to have school 24/7 which no one will ever want in their life. It's a waste for students AND teachers since they have to spend time grading it. WE NEED TO GET RID OF HOMEWORK BECAUSE IT IS STRAIGHT WACK!
3
I'm in the eighth grade and I think they put WAY TO MUCH HOMEWORK on us. Honestly why not just do all of that work in the five days we have of school. Because I have a other life than school, and I think homework. Honestly I don't do my homework btw most of the time I copy off of my twin brother Cade or known as * Squishy *. But I have my Fallout, Skyrim and Call of duty WW II Progress to carry on and I just dont have time for Homework...
I have a lot of homework. If I don't do it, my parents get mad because my grade goes down, not to mention I get stressed from my teacher simply speaking to me! I have had to abandon most of my interests in order to get to sleep before midnight on weekdays. My math teacher especially is a problem. What should be just going over concepts in maybe 10-15 problems, he assigns about 60-80 problems per night (though we do have block period, and two days to do it, it's hard.) I normally do homework alone at home, or with the help of my siblings. I'm stressed, tired, and struggling and I just want it to stop.
1
I definitely agree. Often times I have sports practice after school until 6, as well as band practice some days. Most days I don’t get home until 7 o’clock or later, and I have to shower and eat dinner. I won’t start working until almost 8 o’clock, and can have upwards of 3-4 hours of homework a day. I’m having to make up homework at lunch, or stay up late not getting enough sleep to function at school the next day. When you fall asleep at 11:00 and have to wake up at 6 to make it to school on time, you become very tired.
Teachers don't generally assign too much homework. But, I hate it when several of your teachers each give you a lot of homework the same day/week. I wish the teachers would coordinate with each other so that not too much stress and homework is piled onto the class.

I go to a charter school, and our teachers do assign more homework than average, but I think it is just too much. I have a very special circumstance, where I am in tenth grade math, but I'm in ninth grade. And because of schedule conflicts with theatre, choir, and biology, I have to be in a ninth grade math class on B days and learn every other lesson on my own. And I just found a missing assignment on my report card, which I was never informed about. I asked my teacher and he said that he had taught it on a B day, so I wouldn't have learned it. So I tried to do it, but I couldn't. And this was even after that chapter's test. I realized that this information wasn't even on the test, and that he had pretty much just taught it for the heck of it. And to answer the question of "does homework cause stress and tension in your family?" I say that it does indeed. In fact, there have been at least two shouting matches simply because of this busywork. And don't even get me started on my AP Geo class.
As a fresh man in high school my teachers rarely give out homework i like to finish my work in school and if i have any home work do it in class and ask any questions i have then so im not stuck later
In the article "Do teachers assign too much homework?" by Michael Gonchar, it tells about how teachers assign too much homework to students. I think teachers do assign too much homework because the majority of students in high school are involved in extra curricular activities and then they go to work. But by the time they get off work and go home, they have time to eat and get ready for bed. Instead, students are forced to stay up entirely too late to finish all of their assignments. Not only do they loose sleep, they also don't have very much time to spend with their families. Doug B says, "I'm becoming deranged from the excess of homework given to me. I have no time for any interests I have, companions, or sleep". students start to have lack of sleep which becomes very recognized at school through class participation, lack of effort at practice, work performance. etc. Due to lack of sleep, these students are fully energized to concentrate correctly and process all the information they receive during class. Teachers should not assign so much, if any homework at all.
We are assigned too much homework from teachers. Too much homework leads to stress and pressure on students. As a junior in high school, homework is definitely a huge problem. Teachers assign homework from each class, thinking you'll be done the next day. They already make you spend 6 to 7 hours in a prison which they so call school, for 5 days out of the week. '" How many people take home an average of two hours or more homework that must be completed for the next day?" In the source New York Times, Christine Hauser composed an article named "As students Return to School, Debate About the Amount of Homework Rages", in which she conveyed us, homework is being a huge problem. You can't even come home and spend time with your family because of homework. At this point, homework need to be stopped!!
I fully agree that teachers gives their student to much work. I agree because I'm in eleventh grade and I be so swamped in homework to where I can not even leave out my front door from being in fear of not finishing all of my work. Most of the homework assigned is pointless cause you don't learn nothing from them, the only homework I learn from is math homework. In "as students return to school, debate about the amount of homework rages," one concerned parent argues her daughter, Maya, which is going to second grade was told to read a book six days a week during the summer break. this is just trying to take the breaks away from children. when they should spend time with family and loved one
I, as a student in high school, do believe that homework should be given, it is a part of school and education. Now there are times it may be to extreme like what happen to this little girl named Maya, "who was asked to complete homework six days a week during the summer". (para 1, Do Teachers Assign Too Much Homework?)
I do agree that we as students forget things over the summer, shoot we forget things over the weekend, and that is only two days. The summer is two months so I agree with this statement,"schools are taking steps to shorten summer brake". (para 5, Do Teachers Assign Too Much Homework?)
Now I don`t agree with this statement, "many people take home an average of 2 hours of homework, that needs to be complete for the next day".(para 1, Do Teachers Assign Too Much Homework?) Well two hours may seem like a long time you half to think, people work at there own speeds, what may take me 10 minutes to do, may take you 1 hour to do. So this claim is invalid, plus if its a not everyday then how bad is it really?
So my stand is i don`t think teachers give to much home work, now there are some times it may get out of hand.
Teachers give students too much homework. As a 11th grader I get home around 4:30pm and when i get home i sit at the table to do my homework and it takes me about 3 hour to complete all the work. In the New York time article "a second grader had to do homework six days a week all summer and that is ridiculous
When having too much homework it can be very overwhelming. I am a tenth grader and i have all honors classes and i have a plethora of homework which can make me nervous when i don't have enough time to do it. I think that homework doesn't really help me it just gives me meaningless work although math homework is very important but history, science, and other electives that gives homework i don't learn from that. In "As students return to school, debate about the amount of homework rages", a second grader Maya has been assigned six days of homework every week for the summer and after trying to keep up with the work she looked up at her mom and said that she hated reading. I believe that students shouldn't go to bed stressing about their homework.
Teachers give us too much homework. As a 10th grader having a job and getting home around 6 o'clock, I barely have time to do anything other than eat dinner and get to bed early enough. The New York Times article "As Student's Return To School, Debate About The Amount Of Homework Rages", one parent stated that her second grade daughter was to complete homework six days a week during SUMMER which is ridiculous. Even though most teachers believe in giving too much homework a second grade teacher from Godley, Texas, let parents know on "Meet The Teacher" night that she had no plans to load up her students backpack, where they could go home and spend quality time with there family and get to bed early. So for students to all grades it would be better for them to be able to go home at night and not being stressed on too much homework, where they could spend time with there family.
Homework is generally fine most of the time until it gets to be around finals time, I understand that it is the end of the semester and they need some way to measure growth but every teacher assigning a major project for the entire month before finals and then I always spend all my time on one of my classes and then I dont have time for my other classes work and then I also want to get a job but I cant really get a job when I somehow manage 3 AP classes, church, band, and a sport and then I dont get enough time to do the assignment and my grades start slipping which causes stress which causes me to not work which causes my grades to go further and its just a big cycle of stress that doesnt end until I have the miracle day off which is almost as rare as a solar eclipse.
So homework to me is actually a perfect amount right now for me... most of the time. Now there are days where 3 of my teachers will assign projects starting at 3 different times and out of some negative miracle they end up all due on the same day. Now I'm actually fine with the homework load right now but thats when sports and choir come into play. You start missing a day here and a day there, and suddenly you are totally behind on everything in that class. Projects that were assigned on the days you were gone suddenly appear the day before they are due along with every assignment missed. Next thing you know you have half of the assignments completed, its 5 o'clock in the morning, and you were so tired that everything that you wrote is just a mumbo jumbo of words that is not even readable.
Then not only do you get the stress factor on the student. It also tears the students family apart too. It causes MANY arguments between the parents and their kids. I saw a post in Time magazine that said "teachers assign homework to bring the students family closer together." I actually showed that to my teachers and they laughed and sarcastically said "ya, because thats totally what I am thinking when I give out the homework.
Over the years, homework has steadily increased in both the amount of time and the difficulty. Now, in my junior year, it has become ridiculous. There is no way to participate in extra curricular activities, have a job, and complete all of your homework. These AP classes have at least 1 hour of homework every other night, and normal classes aren't that much easier, so that adds up to about 4 hours of homework, if i work hard and without any distractions. I generally rely on my homework grades to bring up my test grades to achieve As and Bs, but it causes stress and makes it so that i can't do simple things after school like hang out with friends or even just go to the grocery store. Some argue its a time that you can connect with your family and help them, but honestly my parents stopped being able to help me around 6th grade. I haven't read a choice novel in a few years now, because I just don't have time. This was mostly just me presenting my anger, and I understand why teachers give homework because there is no way for us to learn all of the intended material in time for an AP test in may, so I don't really know what could be done to resolve this. I'm just so tired all the time.
As a young scholar, I truly believe that it is was is it.
I'm right now in my first year in High School and here, we don't have that much homework for the moment.
I think that it actually depends on the teachers.
Over the past 2 months my teachers only gave us 3 oral assignments.
We only have our lessons to learn for the next class and sometimes exercices.
I need to work like 1 hour per day just to learn my lessons and that's all.
Your going to say that its not enough work but for me it's pretty good.
For the future and my 2 next school years, I guess that I will have more homework and I'll have my final exams so I'll have to work more.
As an 11th grader taking mostly college classes, I have a lot of homework. So much of school is independent study, and, while there's nothing wrong with learning on your own, we need the resources to be made available to us. An hour of homework doesn't sound so bad, and it isn't! But when each of my seven college classes assigns an hour each, I begin to resent school. Homework, in theory, is a great idea; especially to those who don't fully understand the complexity of the material. In reality, it is 3-5 hours every night of repeating unnecessary information. I play sports and do extracurricular activities becasue they will help me get into college - which is an entirely different topic by itself - and then I find myself having to do homework before I can go to bed. Highschool students today should not be running on 4 hours of sleep and caffeine.
I have 1-4 hours of homework every night. most is poorly taught in school or just busy work. It's very annoying.
I'm in 8th grade and the homework I get from my literacy teacher is absurd. Every night I have to study, read a book or do some stupid worksheet about nouns vs pronouns. To make things worse I don't understand literacy that well so it makes it takes so much longer and when I tell my teacher that it's to much work and that an I have a real life she just says"DO YOU KNOW WHO HAS THE MOST WORK THE TEACHER, WE HAVE TO GRADE THE ASSIGNMENTS AND STAY LATE AND MAKE THE TEST AND QUIZZES SO WE HAVE THE HARDEST JOB." we have way to much work but nothing is going to happen about that because "homework is good for you" We already spend over 6 hours a day in the prison they call school and it just last longer at with stupid homework.
soo much homework
I easily have way too much homework. I usually have 2 to 3 hours of homework each night. I usually average all A's, and I don't procrastinate much. It even spills into dinner, and I'm getting a shower later and later and going to bed later and later. Some nights, I have baseball, which further delays dinner and everything else I typically do. 3/5 days on the school week I have upwards of 30 minutes of leisure time because I'm up so late. I
I have to get it done at home. All the work we don't finish in class, goes to homework, plus an additional worksheet or two. And when you have 6 classes, that additional worksheet for each class only worsens the time of homework I'm doing.
Projects, might help. Worksheets? You can't learn from these, when you have no clue what you're doing, AND you can't kidnap the teacher to ask her for help at your house. My parents don't even have any clue what I'm doing in Math, and my brother is too much invested in homework to help me!
I just did 6 hrs. worth (which inspired me to look up this article), and it was all assigned by teachers who couldn't fit the work into their class periods. It shouldn't be this hard to maintain A's and B's in school. I don't even procrastinate!
I also read other articles acting shocked about how first graders get 30 minutes of homework a night. I honestly think that isn't a big deal and people should be more worried about the effects of the hell I just went through.
Thanks for bothering to read that.
There are some days when teachers assign us too much homework, which really kills my sleeping time. I feel like there is no need for teachers from ALL AROUND THE WORLD to hand out homework, because so far, homework hasn't really taught me anything. The most important stuff you need to learn is what's being taught IN CLASS (take notes, kids), so I don't see the need for homework if it's only going to take away time with family, friends, activities, and most importantly, sleep. There will be times when I can manage the right balance between homework and extracurricular activities, but when it comes to writing essays, MATH HOMEWORK (I hate showing work on something I easily learn), more English homework, and other homework due on the next day, it just kills a day of your life doing something "important", yet undesirable. I sometimes do some homework at school, and then finish it at home. Usually I do the most important homework first (ENGLISH, come on), and do the easy stuff last because if I do the easy stuff first and the hard stuff last, I'll only get more tired. I work in a somewhat quiet room with very little noise but it doesn't bother me as much. I don't get any help because I know I w ill do well on my assignments, so working alone is my thing. Honestly, homework isn't an important part of my learning experience, in fact, many others as well. Homework is basically reviewing what you've learned in class, so I think it's a waste of time. Better to take notes.
I love running track with a passion, but last year I had so much stress between school, track practice , hours of homework, working to pay for car insurance, making enough time for family and friends, time to relax. The stress of all this plus trying to keep good grades was making me sick. My mom told me I needed to stop doing something to take away stress. I choose track. So whats more important my health or homework? The school and teachers would say homework, but I say track and my health. I'm already in school for 6 hours, isn't that enough.
I honestly think our teachers give us too much work. It gets to the point where sometimes you do it during other classes, which then impacts your learning in that specific course. I regularly stay up until 12 am or later to try and meet deadlines and finish my assignments.
PART 1
I have almost all PRE-AP classes in 8th grade, so the struggle is already a big thing with all the homework. I usually have 3 lengthy assignments daily, go to sports practice, have to do some chores, and have to do the usual eat, relax (which is the hardest for me to do) and sleep. Since I play sports, I think it’s one of my top priorities to get at least 7 hours of sleep but by the end of the day, I only get about 4-5 or 6 hours if I’m lucky. (I think part of the problem is that I just need more sleep so I can be well rested and ready to learn the next day) I have band things afterschool rarely but if I do have them, it’s for a very long time. I’ve been so lost with all the math homework i’ve had and I have asked the teacher for help. I ask and ask but he keeps saying the most irritating thing. “Ask 3 people before me”..
too much
I am in the eighth grade and everyday seems like an unavoidable battle with homework. I used to see my brother (who is now completing his final year of college with a double major) struggle with homework for hours on end in the eleventh grade and teased him, thinking that I would never be in THAT position. But I am, three years too early. Our teacher ingrain the fact that high school is like a war zone, and that the teachers would be ruthless. They tell us this to try and console themselves that their actions are justified. Because the truth is, we students are too far gone. I get at least 5 hours of homework everyday, with multiple assignments in each class. This is neither healthy, nor is it educational. I used to be enamored with swimming, dance, debate, all of it. But I've had to give it up for the homework. I can't spend time with my family or friends anymore, because I have to simplify polynomials and turn in three projects about people that died 150 years ago. I agree that students need to be taught responsibility and that we need to be prepared for the future, but at what cost? At the cost of sleepless nights? At the cost of being cut off from the outside world? At the cost of depression? Teachers, adults, and administrators need to realize that kids can't have it all. We can't do it all. We're just kids. Our lives are at the mercy of projects, essays, and worksheets. How beneficial is homework when it is deleterious on the rest of us? Just something to think about.
1
I am in grade nine and I often run into the issue of "too much homework." I understand that homework can be important in not only helping us practice what we learn in class, but also to get extra grades into the grade books, however, there is a fine line between helping one's mental abilities, and destroying them. I don't think many teachers realize how much homework they are truly giving their students. One homework assignment in one class is one thing, but one or two homework assignments in every class is too much, by an extensive amount. I often stay up until as late as three in the morning doing homework, and I know I'm not the only one. I have heard from my classmates that they often have the same issues. Sometimes we go as far as staying up all night in order to complete all of our assigned work. It is not healthy, nor is it helpful. The majority of the time, I am not leaning anything from doing so much work. I have no time for extracurricular activities, or spending time with family or friends, as a result of the work. The weekends, our only breaks, are filled, also with projects and homework assignments, as if we don't get enough during the week. It is a lot of stress, and sometimes you feel as though quality of life is somewhat lost at the mercy of papers and essays. I agree that homework is an important factor to retaining knowledge from class and learning more about a subject, but too much can be detrimental to our mental, physical, and emotional health.
I am in ninth grade, just entering high school, and I am already overrun with homework. Yesterday evening, not only did I have a meeting for a club, but I had to complete TWO study guides, one that had so much writing involved that the page was nearly covered in words, and a math packet that took me a half an hour to complete. Not only that, but I had to visit with my grandparents because they are going away this weekend and I won't see them for a while. And this is just a typical day with an average amount of homework. Because my school has a block schedule, I have two days to complete the assignments for one day, and I often can't complete all the assignments in just one day! (If you don't know what a block schedule is, it is where you have a day one and a day two, and you have certain classes on day one and certain classes on day two.) I'm only in one honors class, one advanced class (I'm a year ahead in math), and one club (along with choir, which has lots of events), and I still never have time to finish my homework! That's why I look forward to the weekend, because then I have three or four days to complete the assignments given to me. The school wants you to join clubs and sports and be involved, but they give you so much homework that you never have time for it all! High school is rough, so just remember, you elementary and middle schoolers have it off easy. Teachers definitely overload students on homework.
I need to vent a little. I just read that 6-17 aged kids get twice the amount of homework than normal kids. Since the fact that i have to get 1 ribbon on study island and 1 percent on ST math a day, plus homework i have in math and other things, PLUS Saturday theater practice and Sunday art lessons, i have to stay up till like, 12:30 PM just to finish a power-point on Mesopotamia, and i get ZERO free time since i cant use my I pad on weekdays, or anything except a Chromebook and a TV. Why life, WHY. i need free time in my life.
I’m in year 9 and my teachers don’t assign me much homework so students in my school have quite a free live. We are able to go to academies, spend the evening with parents and have a social life. Even though i do not have much homework I think that too much homework causes stress and tension in the family because if one person in the family is stressed out, the whole family does. Therefore, I agree that too much homework can be a stress factor for many students.
as a high school senior I find it hard to relax at night with all the stress of homework. There was times last year were i had so much homework that i couldn't go to bed because i would only get 2 hours of sleep. And even still barely finished all my work
As a high school junior going into senior year I was assigned about 150-160 pages of small print textbook to write notes about, including 2 summer books with worksheets, and an essay during summer. And of course this is plus the full time internship I was encouraged to take by my school that takes everyday of summer, except one week. And during school I am busy from 6 am to 1 am doing homework. And on the weekend I am expected to do extracurriculars and more homework. Oh yay.
I have lots to say on homework in America. I am a senior in high school, and I'll be graduating in a month (finally!). I've gotten into a good college and have gotten their best scholarship. Having said that, I've had to spend long nights working on homework ever since about 3rd or 4th grade. Yes, before middle school. I have NEVER had a real social life. My parents always made me come home to do my homework until it was about 10 or 11, and later until 12 or 1 AM in high school. I developed a panic disorder surrounding homework and school this year and I haven't been to class in a month because I haven't done homework and it keeps piling up. I'll admit I should be more responsible, but I also have to admit the level of homework I've had to do to even have a chance at ANYTHING is absolutely ridiculous. How is a student supposed to live a life, have friends, have fun, laugh, and most importantly BE HAPPY when they just can't go out because of homework? America as a whole is suffering from a stress epidemic, and it's no wonder when you see that we start off stressing our people so young. I understand education is very important, but this is just ridiculous. Kids are supposed to be kids, not mini-stressed out versions of their parents.
One reason reason teachers should not be giving homework to kids is because of stress. This is shown in the quote from an article written by Peter Druker, “ according to research. If bombarded with countless lessons at school and at home, students may feel stress and anxiety should they fail to complete the assignment on time” (Druker 2016). This shows that the stress of homework can affect their ability to complete it, and it also can affect the quality of their work. Another example of this is found in a quote written by Clifton B. Parker, “‘The findings address how current homework practices in privileged, high-performing schools sustain students’ advantage in competitive climates yet hinder learning, full engagement and well being,’ (“Stanford Research Shows Pitfalls of Homework). This once again shows that the stress homework puts on kids can cause their performance to drop. Other evidence shows ”The age where homework starts to stress children out is becoming lower; some children even reporting concerning levels of stress due to homework in early elementary school!” This shows that homework can cause stress. Although homework can be good in some ways, but the cons out weigh the pros.

I'm a junior at my local high school and I have to say that the amount of homework I have to bring home literally makes my book bag weigh twenty five pounds with just the essentials. I was once a straight A student but now this semester's GPA will at best land at 2.5. Its not that I don't try. My routine for the day is get ready for school, go to school, get home from school, do homework and chores and get to bed usually around 11 to midnight. Homework has robbed me of nearly 3 years of my life. It has given me constant stress and tore me from friends. The dedication to my work does not reflect in my grades at all.
Schools should not distribute homework because it can put too much stress on kids. The text said “Homework is stressful. A 2002 study showed a direct relationship between time on homework and increased anxiety, depression, anger, and other mood disturbances among students.” (N.P. Coulson). To have these traits when young can be bad for adulthood. Kids can get stressed out and have anxiety. Another reason is “It also reduces time for other activities that provide balance and variety to a child’s life, such as sport, music, art, or other extra-curricular activities, or to relax and simply be children.” (N.P. Coulson). Kids just need some time to regenerate and be kids. Kids don’t get to be kids for their whole life. They should be able to be kids while they’re kids. Lastly the article says “Some learning theorists claiming that homework could be detrimental to students' mental health.” (N.P. Marzano and Pickering). Homework can damage the mind of the young. It can get kids stressed and stress causes their mood to be disturbed and could potentially ruin their adulthood.

One reason homework is not beneficial is because it does not improve performance. A survey done through the University of Michigan stated “students ages 6 to 17 were doing twice as much homework as in 1981-’82”(Crawford n.p.). I think it is very unfair that students are now getting twice the amount of homework. “Homework gives less or no benefit when it comes to motivating students to improve performance in school”(List of 10 Big Pros and Cons of Homework). If homework is not beneficial, why give so much of it? It is very unnecessary to give so much if something that will not help someone but only cause stress and a lack of sleep. A family took this into their own hands,“One Canadian couple recently took their homework apostasy all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. After arguing that there was no evidence that it improved academic performance, they won a ruling that exempted their two children from all homework”(Crawford n.p.). Homework is very unnecessary and does not improve anything

I am a senior in high school. Normally, at other schools seniors are spending time with their familiy and friends. They are relaxing and enjoying their last year with their family and siblings. But. NO! I am sitting here all day completing useless assignments that have no significance. At my school, we complete something called senior project. While it may sound harmless and exciting at first, it is actually poisonous, time-consuming, useless trick teachers at my school use to slap "the real world" into the faces of tired, sleep-deprived seniors. We start the year with a tedious project plan, finding mentors, and writing SO MUCH paperwork about what we plan to do. We will then spend the rest of the year documenting our progress in little one dimensional paragraphs about our activities which will include sentences such as "I wrote an email to Dave. He responded with his phone number. I thanked him." to prove to teachers we completed these tasks. We have to have documented paragraphs and reflections about 7 hours of work on our senior projects a week. Now, slackers might just say "oh, I don't want to do that... lol!" But by the time they do not turn in their third assignment, they start to get warnings about graduation. That's right! If we do not pass senior project and complete ALL the paperwork, we will not graduate from our high school. After our closures we have to memorize these long speeches and fill four binders due on grad day. I don't eat, and I am depressed b/c this
Homework is a necessity, it is simply impossible to think that all learning will be done in class. That being said, too much is counter-intuitive, as it gets in the way of extracurriculars and sleep, which are also important in the learning process.
I am 13 years old in 8th grade and I definitely think my teachers assign too much homework. I usually stay up till at least 11:30PM week nights trying to get it done (mind you, I have to wake up at 6am). All of my teachers also tend to assign big projects and essays at the same time, all of which are useless and don't relate to what we are learning in the classroom. In fact, I have a lab in social studies (aka history) due tomorrow on a paper airplane we made and flew in class. We have done a lab like this before and we never followed up on it in class or did anything about it except get a grade, and I feel it was a waste of time. On top of this I have math homework every night which takes about an hour and this is the only homework I agree with, considering I learn from it and the only way to really study for math it to practice. However, some of these ridiculous "projects" or essays in english and social studies are completely useless and all they do is make me stressed and sleep deprived. I agree with maybe a quick worksheet to go over in class and make sure every body is understanding the topic, and maybe even and essay or project here and there, but this is out of hand and I rarely have nice conversations with my family anymore or do anything on my free time. I do not agree with going to school for 7 hours then doing homework for like another 7.
at home we have something called LIFE and have no time spared to do more school work, I need to spend time with my family and help out around the house. I'm 17 any only have so much of my childhood to go and I DONT plan to waste it doing schoolwork on my own time!
I am in 10th grade and I find that most weeks my teachers assign a lot of homework and other weeks very little. I have seen that the amount of work I get really does affect my physical health, my mental health and my social life. I don't really get a whole lot of time with friends and family or for extracurricular activities. I find that I get really stressed over homework, and that I don't really get time to do any physical activities. I think that if teachers assign homework it should have a purposeful reason to be done and NOT busy work. They should also keep in mind that we have multiple classes and have work from them too. I think the amount of work assigned should allow student to have plenty of time to do extra curricular activities, spend time with friends and family, make sure that students are able to keep up their mental health, and keep up physical activities along with getting plenty of time to rest.
I think that all learning should be done in school, and have no homework.
I'm in grade 8, And i get homework every single night by my math teacher, he expects it to be done the next day, but sometimes, i have things i need to do, i might have to go out with family. But my homework doesn't allow it, Because if i don't finish it he calls my mom or my dad, and it's not fun to have. A lot of teachers assign one piece of homework a week, but that's so much better because then i have a period of time to finish it. I think school boards should cut down on the amount of homework supposed to be given. Thank you for reading!
Im in grade 10 and our school has had such a problem with homework that teachers gave us a survey to fill out. We filled out how many minutes we spend on each subject and added it together. The majority of my class had at least 7 and a half hours worth of homework a week. Teachers said they would make a change and nothing was ever done. Homework doesn't help improve a students learning abilities but make them believe they aren't as smart as they are. Homework is unnecessary and adds on stress.
I'm now 13 years old and school is bringing me to hell. Teachers one by one, don't give too much homework, but when you add it all up, it's loads. I'm often get overstressed about homework, and get very fustrated. Because of this, I do not get along well with my family (being tired is also a part of it). I sleep about 6 hours each night, because of homework, and I'm also not the type of person who can go to sleep fast. I never, or rarely have the time to do anything I want. I can not go out with my friends, or do anything apart from doing homework. I think teachers forget students have more than one subject, and that most pupils have extra classes, and obligations. In conclusion, yes teachers do give too much homework.
Yes , indeed. As a high school student , learning about 6 curriculum each day is stressing enough. Sometimes classwork can turn into homework. Often times, they will expect me to do an essay over a little periods of time. The teachers think it might be a small amount but if you add it all up , my homework starts to pile up. My evening with my friends will turn to a night staying up in my room desperately trying to finish to get enough sleep. It’s just too much. Most of us don't get enough sleep trying to do it, most frustrating of all is when you stayed up all night and the homework didn't collect it because it was not important. Most of the work it so not important but its just to review but teachers go extreme and give out too much of it
From my perspective, teachers do assign a lot of homework all at once, its like they forget I have other classes.Homework causes a lot of stress especially when there is a lot of something easy to do or when there is a short time period for something to be completed. In the article, it has an online debate about this topic and 93% of people agree that teachers give too much homework for kids that are handling part time jobs, school activities, outside of school activities, and personal lives. I know for me that I am usually busy after school whether it's going out to eat or going shopping or simply just spending time with my family. Now, I cannot do those things because I have to spend lots of time on my homework. I feel like I am so chained down. Sometimes I don't even feel motivated to do my homework besides fact that it'll affect my grade if I don't do it.
My teachers sometimes give me the right amount of homework, there are some days that I get a lot of homework from one class and then all of a sudden I have a lot of homework for all my classes.Homework causes stress and tension in my family. I spend all my time after school doing homework and not looking after my younger siblings. I never have time during the weekends to go out or do some of my hobbies with my family. I get a lot of homework at times that when it is the weekend all I do is stress out about homework I don’t even have.Homework for me gets in the way of my sleep and other activities. I can’t go play with my siblings outside and neither do they have time to play outside. I can’t play with them inside because I never have time and again neither can they play inside. I need to sleep earlier than usual and if I don’t my eyes will be super watery and I will have a lot of headaches.I get my homework done at home and I try to do to some in class. I do my homework in my room with my sister and brother. I work by myself and no one helps me with it because I’m the oldest sibling and my parents don’t know anything about the homework I get.Homework in my opinion It is a learning experience but it is more of a waste of time. I don’t like using my time off school to do more school work with more stress and less time to do other things.
In my opinion teachers assign way too much homework all at once.
Homework does cause stress and tension in my family because every time everyone wants to do something, it seems like I always have homework to do, and cannot attend.
It does get in the way of sleep and extracurricular activities because sometimes I may not be able to participate because I have so much. Also I will stay up all night sometimes trying to finish all of my homework on time because they all assign a lot at once.
I normally try to finish my homework during school when I have free time in classes. I typically can do homework in any type of setting.
I feel as though homework is an important part of our learning experience because it requires us to think a little harder, but sometimes when they go overboard, we aren’t really learning. At that point it becomes doing anything it takes to finish in time, and get a good grade.

I think teachers do assign a lot of homework. I try to get it done and I usually do, but when I don';t get it complete because of my social life and other important activities to keep me sane I can't get it done. So that just piles up on me and causes so much stress in my family. I have panic attacks right before a marking period ends because I have so much work to do. I think teachers should cut back on homework just a bit, And I do admit I am lazy and don't do it at sometimes, Just sometimes there can be too much.
In my opinion, the teachers at my school give way too much homework for an eighth grader to handle. In the an article, it has an online debate about this topic and 93% of people agree that teachers give too much homework for kids that are handling part time jobs, school activities, outside of school activities, and personal lives. I agree with the kids and parents in another article when they say that they are so frazzled by all of the homework that they have to do, but I don’t agree with the teachers in America that say that they give the right amount of homework. When all of the core subject teachers give “the right amount of homework”, it starts to really add up. In the spring and fall, I go on a lot of vacations on the weekends, and when I need to do homework over the weekends, it takes up a lot of time out of my precious family time. Instead of taking a hike or going to the beach, I have to be stuck at the house completing my homework. Also, they say that the younger children are doing much more homework that they have ever done before in the earlier years like the 90’s. I agree with that because I have a younger cousin who is in 3rd grade, and she has been doing so much more homework than what I remember doing.

Some of my teachers do assign a heavy load of homework. I am a high school student that is involved with extra curricular activities, and many times, the assigned homework can interfere with those and going to sleep at night. With very early mornings, it can be difficult to balance homework, sleep, extra curricular, and spending time with family and friends all in one day. Most of the time, my homework can take me 2-3 hours, which in my opinion is far too long. With less homework, it would be a lot easier to manage my daily life.
I believe that some teachers assign to much homework. The ones that give us homework every single day, that's to much. We have 8 hours of our day to go to school, then finally after getting off long bus rides we are tired and stressed from what we put up with at school. So after getting home, we have homework, takes up to an hour. Then after homework we still need to eat dinner with our family. After dinner all we want is to go to sleep but hen we realize we need a shower, so then we shower, and finally pass out in bed.
I believe that teachers do assign too much homework. I am currently in high school, and I want to become more involved with activities at school, but it is difficult because I am already really busy. Trying to balance school, family and friends, and the extra curricular activities I want to do can be really difficult. And now the districts are saying that we need to get to bed at a certain time if we want to be sleeping a healthy amount. But then my friends tell me that they are up until 3 in the morning sometimes doing homework. There are many reasons why I think teachers assign too much homework, but these are my main reasons.
I believe that teachers do assign too much homework. Trying to juggle school, family/ friends, and an extra curricular activity is definitely harder than some people make it seem. There are 24 hours in a day. School is approximately 8 hours, extra curricular activities could take up to 4 hours, and on some days so much homework is assigned that I spend up to 4-5 hours trying to complete assignments, projects, and essays. That leaves 7 hours. In order to remain socially sane, I need to spend time with friends and family for a minimum of 1 hour. Then we're left with 6 hours to sleep, but most doctors recommend 8-10 hours of sleep each day. The sad thing about all of this is that we are expected to get up and repeat this process 5 times a week. The amount of stress that this causes can be too much for some people, I would know. I feel that a great deal of homework I receive is just busy work. Like come on, a math packet of 3 pages just to get the concept of factoring? That's a bit excessive and a waste of my time. I usually get my homework done at home, because by the time the teacher is done explaining how to do the homework we have 2 minutes left in class. So basically what I'm saying, is that we don't need 20 pages of homework to understand one concept. I could be out learning social skills, but instead I'm stuck at home working on social studies.
Most teachers do assign too much homework. Many of my teachers will teach us the information in class, and then give us an assignment five minutes before class is dismissed. Homework does cause stress and tension in my family because it is hard to spend time with your family, do chores and work around the house, and complete any other personal tasks when you have multiple hours of homework to complete. My parents aren't really involved in my school life, which is perfectly okay with me because school is my responsibility. It tends to get in the way of my sleep because I will have things to do during the day, and then have to stay up all night doing the homework and studying that I didn't have time to do during the day. If I received less homework from my teachers, I would easily be able to balance my time better. I am not the best at doing homework, I often wait until the last minute or turn it in late, if at all. When I do work on homework, it is mostly done at home, in my room, with good music playing, and usually with my friends who are also working on school work. I do not think homework at home is an important part of my learning experience. Students spend most of their days at school, when we are out of school we should be putting our time to better use, like spending time with our families and experiencing life. The only homework kids should be doing out of school is what they could not finish in class.
~I definitely get too much homework to handle. I get at least an hour of math a night, and I work most nights. If I don’t get homework from any other classes - which is rare - then I still barely have time to finish my math homework before I’m up until at least midnight dreading the fact that I’ll have to get up in 5 and a half hours.
~Homework gets in the way of my family being able to spend time with each other. My family can’t help me because the math I’m doing is something they can’t even begin to comprehend.
~Homework gets in the way of everything. I can never get the 8 hours of sleep I need, and don’t have time to hang out with my friends.
~I get homework done easier at school, but now that I have so much I never have time to finish it all. I have to be somewhere where there are no distractions, so usually my room.
~I think a little practice is fine, but I do the same types of problems over and over again. I know how to do it, so I don’t need this much practice. The amount they give us is overwhelming and the assignments are very tedious.

My school just depend son the teacher but they do pile up on projects. I'm still a 9th grade student and they give almost 4 projects for half-yearly exams. For example in physics they gave us to do something that has to be done with renewable energy. It was hard because some students who had design and technology as a subject finished it while some students who didn't found things very hard to do. It's difficult and unfair. Including that we have Math homework,English and language homework(+2 projects in those aswell), (Option) Art project plus studying. It feels like you can never hang out anymore with friends due to the amount of stress.
