How to Be Mindful at the Holiday Table

Been looking for a short definition for "mindful" for quite awhile. AFAIK the closest synonym is "attentive." But headlines and articles that use the latter term are not going to put eyeballs on adverts or sell books. There are more names for things than there are things. "Mindful" is already so over-used that it is worn out.

My tradition is that we all take a few momenrs to recall and be thankful for our ancestors and departed friends, pets, mentors and those fortunately still in our lives. This can involve telling stories that reanimate loved ones and make them part of the celebration. What is prescribed in this column is closer to Mindlessness.

I am extremely happy to report that my Thanksgiving dinner lacked bad vibes of any kind. Family and friends brought delicious side dishes, we all enjoyed every bite, and my kids cleaned up the kitchen!

Geez, I can't even have my memories along for the ride??
I'm all about appreciating the moment, but shoving aside or pushing down good, happy, profound and yes, even sad memories or thoughts of a special holiday ... or any day ... no thanks to that.
Best to all.

It all sounds wonderful; everyone enjoy their turkey and their Thanksgiving Day with family and friends.

Really? Do we need some guru to tell us how to be mindful? Or just the illicit administration of a substance like Aricept, as so many college kids are doing? Mindless? Can't one just be, without some paid pundit to pass judgment and inevitably find inadequacy that can be removed only through the indemnification of a pricey transaction? How utterly bourgeois and American this whole mindful exercise is!

"Just be" is exactly what the author is talking about.

Maybe you should just try a few slow deep breaths before you read these Mindfulness Prompts. Many of us find them helpful and are grateful. You might be surprised. Kind wishes.

Who is being paid? What are you even talking about? With all due respect, learning some breathing exercises might be a great help for you.

Tell all you suggest we do to the turkey who did not volunteer to be present. Violence of any kind is not good.

My Tucson tableau.

Nothing more wonderful tomorrow on Thanksgiving than awakening to the Get Up! Get UP! call of the curve-billed Thrasher at daybreak;
going downmyhill on my jewel and gem be-strewn dirt pathway;
amongst the 12 giant saquaro with the quail and hummingbirds and Cactus Wrens trailing behind (even the bees!);
hoping for a hand-out of sugar water or trailmix distributed (sparingly of course) for this ohsorare Thanksgiving event;
where there is a small gifted-to-me Buddha holding a real pearl-of-life, awaiting my meditation of gratitude.

By the time I trek back upthehill the Monarch butterflies that I 'born and bred' myself are fluttering about my front door on the Milkweed and BlueMist plants I provided for them/to have them.

Then my day withthoseothers who help me stay grounded begins (even involving the NYT bien sûr/of course).

And just as daylight totally dies away the curve-billed Thrasher will cry out Good-night! Goodnight!
as I review what made my good day.
