Donald Trump Apology Caps Day of Outrage Over Lewd Tape

This is bragging about SEXUAL ASSAULT. NYT - can we PLEASE use the correct terms? Please have enough respect for women to use the term sexual assault? Being groped is sexual assault. Period.
Why does he have special rights?? If you think I'm over reacting picture that instead of a rich white guy he was young and black. What would be happening to him then??

NYT - please do not use a double standard - for all our sake.
TBR (Kansas City)
The Republican Party has demeaned and hurt women with their inhumane, racist, sexist and LGBT-a-phobic, disability-phobic platforms and policies for years. Their motto has been PROFIT and POWER for the elites only - human beings don't matter. Well, you got what you deserved with this radioactive orange buffoon at the "top" of your ticket. Pandering to the worst in people yields the worst. Hopefully Madam President can help to heal the divides and win in a landslide so we can actually have two functional parties again.
PatriciaB (Vidalia, GA)
Let's edit two quotes to better reflect reality. Trump: Anyone who knows me knows these words DO reflect who I am. And Senator Lee: With all UNdue respect...step aside.
The SGM (Indianapolis)
If those words do not reflect who Trump is then why did he use them??????? Perhaps he was only bragging in his teenage lack of maturity manner.
Apology not accepted.
Leadership ability does nut require nor tolerate lack of maturity.
Chris (Florida)
He's wrong, of course, and crude. But he's got a point about Bill.
arunmehta (Newyork)
“Anyone who knows me knows these words don’t reflect who I am,” he said. “I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize.”-Does this mean he is worse than this-one wonders !
Chuck (Adirondacks)
“Anyone who knows me knows these words don’t reflect who I am,” he said. What horsefeathers! They reflect exactly who he is. How could they not? We hear such garbage from his mouth all the time.
Jonathan Deutsch (Arlington, VA)
I see my first comment was dismissed by NYT staff, so I'll try again: Will there be demands for Billy Bush and associate to quit AH? He's laughing at all of Trump's comments, agreeing with his assessments, yet he is not being fired? Let's see if demands rise for Clinton to quit the race once the audiotape of Clinton's first criminal case, getting the rapist of a 10yr old girl off with jail-time served, after he beat a lie-detector machine. Does the NYT want to be fair? we need TWO new candidates.
Tom Banducci (Boise Idaho)
Nice try, Donald. Boy, talk about trying to put lipstick on a pig....
Vladmir Borowski (Manhattan)
Shouldn't sexual predators be imprisoned?
S Venkatesh (Chennai, India)
Governor Huntsman is only partially correct - only Donald Trump is taking this Race down a Bottmless Pit. Yet, for over 14 months now, the US Media & Vast Sections of the American People have been Enthusiastic supporters of Donald Trump's Vile, Despicable & Criminal Actions. Hillary Clinton's Lifelong Record of Distinguished Public Service has been Outrageously Ignored. The Clinton Foundation's Outstanding Charitable Work of providing Medicare for the Largest No. of HIV/AIDS patients in the World has also been Blacked Out. This is Clearly the Most Sickening Presidential Campaign in the World.
Naomi (New York)
Anyone who votes for Trump now truly is deplorable. Just like Trump himself.
Greg Waters (Miami)
Trump began his campaign on a gaudy downward escalator and immediately called Mexican immigrants racists. And you wonder how we got here to the basement?
Meg Conway (Asheville NC)
Kellyanne Conway, (no relation), it's been difficult to listen to you defend Donald Trump, and degrade Hillary Clinton along with him.

Defend Trump this time and you've said goodbye to your professional and personal ethics.
Al Lewis (Chilmark, MA)
He was born on third base and thinks he can grope the ballgirl.
Katherine Cagle (Winston-Salem, NC)
So John McCain still hasn't said he wouldn't support Trump? And Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell? I'm sure they are all aghast and have been over the last few months but they still won't completely disavow him. That is partisanship gone amuck!
Gary Bernier (Holiday, FL)
I'm shocked, shocked Donald Trump is a misogynist, vulgarian and has the self control and self awareness of a three rear old. Who knew? ANYONE WITH EYES AND HALF A BRAIN.
br (waban, ma)
Here is the best reason why he cannot be president: (forgetting EVERYTHING else)
His closest advisors, including his precious daughter, told him NOT to mention the Clintons in his apology. But he did exactly as he pleased. Presidents need trusted advisors, to whom they listen. He said it long ago: his only advisor is himself.
Sylvelin (Michigan)
He apologized for what he said. What about apologizing for what he DID?!?
Dale (New York)
We need to send a strong message to Americans and the world that we will not tolerate the Trump culture of bullying, constant lying, sexual assault, and rape. He needs drop out and be sent to prison by HIS OWN ADMISSION. Trump is making this behavior normal for the people of the world who are watching the most socially advanced society on earth.
Javier Ysart (New York)
Trump's apology: "I never said I was a perfect person."

Yes, but you did say you are a good person. One thing is to talk lewdly with your male friends; it's just part of our societal fabric sometimes to be male buffoons. But this? Mr. Trump, I must respectfully say that this is inexcusable for someone who would like to be POTUS in 2017 America.
Getreal (Colorado)
Way back in 1987, Mayor Koch (NYC) had Trump's number.
Koch called Trump
Piggy, Piggy, Piggy.
Keeping in character with the PARTY of greed, this is who the republicans want to occupy the Oval Office.
Now ....About Obama and Hillary ! Wait, wait, Don't tell me.
republicans want to spend more millions on hearings and investigations chasing the dirty goose that isn't out there.
(Hint) It's in their own barnyard.
Darby Woodbury (Emmaus, Pennsylvania)
What does he have to do???
T. Goodridge (Maine)
If you'd like a preview to what Trump in the White House would be like, just look at Maine's governor Paul LePage. There is a lesson here - everyone who is considering a vote for a third party should watch this, especially the end! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB1bSJB3n10
Had911 (Los Angeles, California)
On behalf of pigs everywhere, Donald, if you want to seduce a girl, you take her to dinner and the theatre -- you do not take her "furniture shopping." What
were you going to do, buy a mattress? No wonder you couldn't get anywhere; you have no game. I suppose that's why you are reduced to grabbing girls like a caveman.
Steve C (Bowie, MD)
Ryan and McConnell disapprove? Well la-de-da. He has no respect for women but he'll be a good President? What are we failing to see here?

His remarks have become the latest major news story but America should remember the hurricane that is devastating the southern coast. There is a lot more in the news than Trump's nasty mouth. Oh, I forgot. We can trust the media to put everything in perspective. NOT!
M.Robertson (Birmingham, UK)
"The only thing necessary for triumph of evil is that good men do nothing".

This means YOU....all of you republicans who continue to endorse Trump....and also those who may not be endorsing him but are not speaking out about his atrocities....should he achieve his aim (God forbid), then you'll be culpable bystanders, one and all.
Mike04217 (Maine)
I wonder if Donnie had his bible with him on that bus?
Richard (Arsita, Italy)
Perhaps this is Donald's Times Square Moment. Except, instead of using a gun to shoot someone, he's used his tiny little pistol to shoot himself.
linearspace (Italy)
Trump apologizing? Don't believe the hype!
JRS (RTP)
Everyone knew, even before this leak what a sleaze ball Trump is, but we did not know what was contained in the Wall Street speeches until the exposure on Friday, and no one knew of the collusion between Harvey Weinstein and the Clinton campaign to destroy Senator Sanders during the primary.
It is my hope that the FBI can do SOMETHING, ANYTHING to stop the power grab that the Clintons hold over this country.
Collusion with Clinton by Hollywood and Wall Street to subvert the election has redeemed any dishonor heaped on Joe McCarthy for his part in defaming past Hollywood souls.
Our Democracy is now built on a network of deception and power grabs not unlike the ROBBER BARONS of the 19 and early 20th century except that this time the baron is Clinton Incorporated.
Benjamin Greco (Belleville)
In 1968 in Chicago's Grant Park, Yippies protesting Lyndon Johnson's policy in Vietnam play acted running a pig for President. Today the Republican Party has done it for real.

If you are disgusted by Trump you must be disgusted by the Party that nominated him. If you have a Republican Congressman or Senator and you have a conscience then you cannot vote for them anymore then you can vote for the pig at the top of the ticket.
William C. Plumpe (Detroit, Michigan USA)
So if the disaster that would be Trump as President actually happens we can
look forward to the White House being turned into a seventh grade boys locker room? Imagine that for a moment. How low can you go? Our allies would be confused even scared and our enemies would laugh at our predicament. Maybe then Trump and Putin can really be buddies, teammates and fellow thugs and despots---one in America and one in Russia. Trump and Putin are like peas in a pod---both very wealthy men in powerful positions acting like junior high bullies. Potentially a very dangerous situation for America and the world. How someone treats you when you're dating is how they will treat you when you're married. Trump is "dating" America hoping to be President. This is how Trump really thinks about women no matter what excuses he or his apologists make. Trump won't change once he's elected. This outrage is just one more reason why Trump is totally unfit to be President. Just because Trump "speaks his mind" doesn't mean what he says is smart or a good idea. This incident proves Trump can say some really stupid and boneheaded things. Do you really want an arrogant, loud mouthed, loose cannon, racist, xenophobe, sexist schoolyard bully and friend to Putin as President? You've got to be kidding. Trump as President would be a disaster for America, the rest of the world and the planet Earth.
mcg (Virginia)
Well, I would like to hear from you women who still support this ridiculous fool why you do.
Richard (Richmond, VA)
Trump is a just a typical American male. Are we wanting to elect a priest?

Don't forget what John F. Kennedy did but that was in secret and of course, Bill Clinton, whom you all want to see back in the White House.
Joe From Boston (Massachusetts)
One has to wonder whether Melania will be standing by his side when he makes a concession speech.

I suspect it will be a concession TWEET, so nobody has to be seen with him when he does it.
Scott K (Atlanta)
He sounds like Bill Clinton!
Larry Levine (Chicago Illinois)
That sort of behavior will get you kicked out of strip joints, and likely get your ass kicked in the parking lot too.
Angela Zimm (Berlin)
How is this news, which again reveals this man's vulgarity, even surprising? We Americans are all the more disturbed for letting him get this far. He's been a paragon of sleaze even before he began his faux political career, and every reporter knows that.
Paul Muller-Reed (Mass.)
I think that Republicans can no longer justify that "family values" thing. It's over, you have none if you support trump.
Julia Gould (Bryn Mawr, PA.)
Billy Bush needs to go too.
JT (Florida)
The loss of Humanity: 2016 Presidential Race
When are people going to stop making excuses for this Thug! This is not about Republican, or Democrat, it about right and wrong. Yes, he is not a career politician, but he is a human? He is part of a society that used to believe in respect, honor, dignity, and humanity. Additionally, Billy Bush should be "Fired" from his contacts and be "HELD ACCOUNTABLE", for his actions, or in his case his lack of actions. If celebrities like Woods, Armstrong, and even Williams can be held accountable, and loose endorsements and contacts they SO should he. The entertainment and new industries must all be held accountable for what they allow because inaction perpetuates these actions and Donald Trump. The people who worked at Access Hollywood at the time had to review this tape, and they should be held accountable for their inactions as well.
Bill Q. (Mexico)
Well, you know, they say he doesn't drink. He has that going for him, right?
Mal Stone (New York)
His advisor is Riger Ailes. Why is anyone surprised by this revelation?
Robert (WIlmette, IL)
I wonder what Angela Merkel and Theresa May are thinking....
David (Bromley, UK)
You guys didn't do too well in selecting the two best people to choose from to lead your country. Is there a system fault here?
jmb22 (southwick, ma)
Excusing one's abhorrent behavior in a "decades old" video may be acceptable when you are in your twenties. When you are 70 looking back on your 60-year-old self, not so much. Sorry Mr. Trump, your words and behavior do define who you are. I wonder how many of your supporters who explain their support for you with "he says what I am thinking" feel that way now.
Allison (Central NJ)
Trump, in his video 'apology' only regrets what he said and totally ignores the fact that most of the public outrage is NOT just from what he said, but that he bragged about sexually assaulting women. He admits to committing sex crimes and thinks talking about it is the main problem. Consider any president who you admire, and compare him to Trump. How can anyone defend that sleazy, despicable man and vote for him to lead and represent our great country and its citizens? #NeverEverTrump.
bill b (new york)
The tape really does tell us who you are.
As Casey Stengel famously said, "you could look it up."
Blueaholic (UK)
Young(ish) women: if you think there's no need for feminism any more, that the playing field is even—listen to this and think again.
ecco (conncecticut)
maybe when trump is dismissed HRC and the NYT will take on the culture that shames every woman for every wrinkle, line and bulge with promises of a slimmer, younger sexier selff, one that fits the "looks matter" mold on display in films, tv series and even tv news to judge from the way women at the anchor desk (or sofa) are presented...in all this while the hyper-hypocrits look the other way, women are demeaned, intimidated (talk to your teen age daughters) for profit and the best we can do is trash make an effigy of trump who, after all is no better or worse than any number of men we've elected to office, you could look it up.
Trashcup (St. Louis, MO)
Trump thought he was in trouble when he heard this recorded conversation on air, then he went home to the penthouse in Trump Tower. Melania then took over and Donald wound up spending the night on Barron's floor (Barron has his on private floor in Trump Tower) where Trump might be spending quite a few more months - alone on Barron's floor.

That's if Melania is smart and I think she's smarter than the plagiarisms she's already committed.

Donald is beyond hope, these comments have been consistent in his history. It's the measure of his morality and his character and he gets a F on both counts.

He brings up Clinton, if the American electorate knew about Clinton BEFORE his election, Clinton would not have won his election. This time we KNOW about Donald. This time we ARE NOT going to elect Trump president of anything.
PB (CNY)
A classic "apology" from abusers: “I apologize if anyone was offended.”
Nancy Lederman (New York City, NY)
Billy Bush, wingman, pimp, or little boy trying to hang with the big guys? Take your pick, now multiply him by thousands, and you have your diehard Trump supporters.
Wm Conelly (Warwick, England)
Hello? GOP? Get serious. ALL this Trump info was available to you BEFORE the primaries. All of it. Make a few calls, dig a little, study, research. Are 'liberals' the only folks with access to Google?

You passed. You looked away. You wanted to present a 'unified front' to the 'other team.' That was your MOST important protocol. You carried on obstructing Obama, or pretending you could indict Hillary, or voting (yet again) to underfund US health care and education.

In effect you allowed the Ailes Rush 'News' Team define your political 'game plan'. Why? Because the Ailes Rush 'News' Team had patched together a 'winning' record on Fox and Rant Radio by pitting one group of Americans against another. Forget the ethics, forget the morals, forget constitutional democracy: Go With The Winners.

Hello? GOP? Enjoy your chickens: they're home to roost.
JC (Houston, Texas)
Men who behave like this do not stop---Bill Cosby, JFK, Bill Clinton...long string of infidelity. I am deeply disappointed in both of our presidential candidates. America deserves better.
Nancy (New England)
The Trump Brand has a new meaning. I hope it means Donald's downfall.
Tom Horton (Syracuse, New York)
I think it is high time the RNC issue an apology for standing behind this man.
Tara (Indiana)
NYT: Grabbing women by the pu**y is not "lewd." It is sexual assault. This man is promoting sexual assault. Please consider changing the title of your piece. This is rape culture and must be called what it is.
Alyson (Lush)
It is inconceivable that anyone could vote for this man. He is an embarrassment to the country. He's a narcissistic misogynist. John Huntsman is right, he should step aside.
Philip (Boston)
GOP Leadership and Senators like Kelly Ayotte who claimed last week that Trump was a role model to New Hampshire kids all have to come out and declare this sleazebag unfit to be President. To talk about women as he did when he just got married was disgusting. I don't believe his apology. He is doing scripted damage control. Imagine how he treats his wife!!!
Joel A. Levitt (Ann Arbor, Michigan)
If she pays him a little IRS-proof cash, Trump is willing to stop molesting her.
Rachel (Boston)
Dear NY Times: As a major news outlet, I would expect precision in language from you all as you shape the tenor of every event this country faces. For those reasons, I am disappointed that you chose to classify Trump's words in your headline as a "lewd tape." Lewd remarks include details outlining a consensual sexual act, or perhaps your own anatomy. What Donald Trump said was that he utilizes systems of inherent inequality to sexually assault women by "grabbing their pussy." That is sexual assault. When you refuse to label this as what it is, you contribute to rape culture in this country and a further blurring of the lines that serves to endanger and negate our countries women and little girls. Shame on you.
rowoldy (Seattle)
After watching the 2005 video re-played again and again, then reading this story, I had to hit the " pause button " on Trump as I waded into the sad story in Haiti. Here is a suggestion for the GOP: Forget about the election and pledge all your time and money on helping those poor people!

Redemption can't come from phony apologies at this stage. Your party is hemoraging, GOP! You need a Mother Theresa moment. Haiti needs your help very badly. It's a BIG deal. Make Trump an after-thought.
Kurt Holzer (Switzerland)
From distance (Switzerland) it is hard to understand how the Republicans - a big American party - still back this person.
NP (New Braunfels, TX)
Remember Mr. Bloomberg said 'When I see a Con I recognize one'. Enough said.
Luciano Jones (San Francisco)
“Anyone who knows me knows these words don’t reflect who I am,” said Mr. Trump

Actually, that's precisely what those words do
AACNY (New York)
The sad part about this is that we've already had a man who behaves this way in the White House. He may be back. What a disgrace they all are.
Chuck McGgegor (Maine)
So, "I never...pretended to be someone I'm not." I get it. He was not pretending to be a groper of women.
Michael (Rochester, NY)
I am truly puzzled

I have spent my entire life in male American locker rooms dressing out for various activities, from rural East Texas where poor boys dressed for gym as adolescents to..to inner City YMCA of Dallas and Rochester, NY, to wealthy areas of Rochester where I currently use the YMCA locker room.

I have never used the word "Pu....sy" in even one of the conversations I have had in a locker room. Nor have I ever said, or heard any other boy or man say, in a locker room: "I can grab her in the Pu..sy. They LET you do it!"

I will ignore the obviously malformed English language sentence in the above quote.

So, when somebody indicates that what they said is OK because it was "locker room talk",

I would like to know: What American locker room are they talking about? No kidding, I have been in thousands of locker rooms.

I have been in those locker rooms, and, the talk does NOT sound like Trash Talk Trump.

Trump denigrates all male Americans by referring to his talk as if every boy and man in America suddenly turns into an idiot like Trump just by going into a locker room.
Christie (Georgia)
I wonder what Ivanka Trump and Kellyanne Conway think? And what, if anything, will they have to say?
Cindy (Florida)
Like this is new news? Marla and Melania knew who they were marrying and we knew who we were nominating. Anyway, have you ever read Esquire or Playboy or any lad mag? They all talk like that. Can you imagine the things Bill ha said...and Hillary?
Dwight Bobson (Washington, DC)
You know what the GOP, McConnell, Ryan and the rest of the Trump rabble have to say, "Give us Barabbus!" Can't wait to hear what the Evangelicals have to shout out.
SayNoToGMO (New England Countryside)
Kelly Ayotte, do you still believe this man is a role model for youngsters?
Would you let him near your daughters?
AW (Buzzards Bay)
fact check: Billy Bush was married at the time of the video and now is a father to three daughters. Step down Mr. Bush..
Radhika (PRINCETON NJ)
The US has one more chance to right its ship in the direction and towards making it a better place for women, children minotrities, veterans, lgbt, senior citiziens, homeless........Unless it gives Trump another pardon.
CPW1 (Cincinnati)
Mitch better get that Supreme Court seat filled quickly
MCS (New York)
Um, okay, so after all the horrible and untrue things he's said about Hillary Clinton, Mexicans, Women, countless others, even members of his Party, now these words "don't reflect who I I am". Sure, I suppose Bill Clinton made you say them. I suppose the media is twisting the audio. I'm sure all of the above, and I'm sure it's precisely who you are Trump. Quit the race or (and I've been waiting for years to say this) You're fired!
Keith (Morristown)
The hypocrisy of the whole thing sucks. No apology necessary for the 'text book' racism though. He has lived off of insults and this is the only thing he's said he's sorry for?

It's a white man's world. Hey America, your slip is showing. There's so much more to say but why bother.
Olihist (Honolulu, HI)
If this does not wake people up to the madness that this year's election has brought upon the Nation. I do not know what else will. People are suffering every day all over this world, and we are gripped by a sex-tape.

America needs to be better than this....
Frederick Johnson (Northern California)
Conservatives gave birth to this tragedy
John de la Soul (New York)
He's so vile and toxic. Any person supporting him at this point is the same.
Tannhauser (Venusberg, Germany)
Donald Trump was always somewhat crude, right from the beginning. He learned sleaze from Roy Cohn and the racist policies of the Trump real estate business. (The transcript of the clip, which the Times has now published, reads right out of a play by David Mamet.) He has always been about self-promotion. New York Magazine pieces, Days of our Lives, even in this depraved banter with Billy Bush. As there is junk food, there is junk news. Too many Americans are absorbed in it. Even the Times promotes an awful lot of garbage. (I have lived abroad for 36 years, don't read the celebrity pages of the Internet, so how do I know about the Kardashians?)

"We're ready, let's go. Make me a soap star." Well, American mass culture did and now Donald Trump is running for President of the US of A and may still win. But even if he is not elected this time, there will be another candidate as crappy for the Republicans to nominate in four years, if not as vulgar, to be promoted by the media to Americans hooked on junk news. Just another chapter in the American soap opera.
Buck Rutledge (Knoxville, TN)
I've often wondered what Holden Caulfield would be like if he was much older but never really matured...now, I know.
rl (Kew Gardens NY)
I've known guys that talked this way about women. Always thought they were jerks.
LBarkan (Tempe, AZ)
What's really lewd and disgusting is that Republican leaders will still vote for him. Deplorable.
Cloud 9 (Pawling, NY)
Re Trump's reference to Bill Clinton: Bill Clinton isn't running for President. Bill Clinton was impeached. It doesn't get any "worse" than what Trump said.
Trump will go all out on this tack Sunday night and it will backfire. Hillary is readying both her defense and her attack.
JEREMY (LEWIS)
Look, stop comparing this to what Bill Clinton did. Here are 2 reasons, 1, he isn't running for President again. The other is he didn't go around grabbing women uninvited.
Jerry Burg (Minneapolis, MN)
Disgusting, obnoxious, beyond vulgar...every word that comes to mind has already been overused to describe Mr. Trump. I am not surprised by him; I continue to be shocked that he polls in the 40%+ range. On a purely personal level and as the father of two amazing young women, I cannot express my level of outrage that men so freely engage in and and bond over shared anecdotes of sexually abusing women.
mjdrage (woodside,ny)
I am a proud New Yorker but I am ashamed that this vulgar lowlife was also born in New York. He gives New York a black eye. I'm also an attractive woman and if that toilet mouth came near me and touched me he'd find himself on the ground and arrested for assault! It's not presidential, it (Donald is an it not a he) belongs in a cage.
Frumkin (Binghamton, NY)
From this same report: "Senator John McCain of Arizona, who has endorsed Mr. Trump, said, 'There are no excuses for Donald Trump’s offensive and demeaning comments.' He was clearly worried about how they might affect his own re-election campaign, adding, 'He alone bears the burden of his conduct and alone should suffer the consequences.'” Wrong, McCain. You and every Republican who has enabled this national disgrace either by failing to repudiate Trump from the very beginning or by actively supporting him, as you have done, should now suffer the consequences of your moral cowardice.
Ron (NJ)
Money was his lure to land the beautiful Melania, but at this point it must be like sleeping with your creepy grandpa?
SL (Baltimore)
My Republican friends still consider Trump to be the “lesser of two evils," they hate Hillary THAT MUCH. Sigh.
M.Robertson (Birmingham, UK)
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing".

This means YOU...all you republicans who continue to endorse Trump...and also those who quietly don't endorse him but fail to speak out about his atrocities...should he achieve his aim (God forbid), then you'll be culpable bystanders, one and all.
cat (maine)
So now it's official: this election comes down to Misogynists versus Anti-Misogynists. That's about it.
JFR (Yardley)
How bazaar, of course everyone who "knows you" would know that this is exactly how you behave, what you are. Trump throws vitriol at Hillary for the boorish behavior of her husband - Trump: an enabler she is! But Trump's proven, observed behavior is orders of magnitude more awful, more vicious than anything Bill did. Where's the GOP's leadership now? Ryan, the moral leader, where is he now? Actually, where have they been as this can't be news to anyone. What does his family think? They know him, this isn't a surprise - it's another situation to manage.
JFR (Yardley)
This should make Sunday's debate a little more interesting.
Duane J. Bennett (Erie, PA)
Tic Tak breath mints? I'm suprised he doesn't chew gum; It's way more like him.
Mareln (MA)
Are there still people out there who will vote for a sexual predator for President of the United States of America?
ted (portland)
This conversation is absurdly one sided. Women have been attracted to wealthy men since the beginning of time and the groping goes both ways. I have lived part time in Palm Beach for fifty years and I can promise you the lengths some women go to attract and "land" a guy with money single or not, can be pretty disgusting, groping is the least of it. I'm not criticizing anyone they are both after something, in the case of a beautiful woman it certainly isn't some old geezers body. What do you think all of these beautiful women gravitate to places like the Hamptons or Palm Beach for, they are very expensive to live in and if you are by yourself and don't have lots of your own money they can be very boring. By the way this is not just a "Donald" thing, many wealthy older women are after young guys either for escorts or entertainment all the time in enclaves such as these, the only difference is the women, who can be just as sexually aggressive, are not likely to be dumb enough to part with their money nor are the young straight men, to their credit, as likely to pursue these avenues to fortune and fame. As for me, I would prefer The Times discuss the implications our involvement in the coup in the Ukraine(Hillary and Victoria Nuland) has had on destabilizing the region and who benefits(Israeli oligarchs): Avigdor Lierberman and Netanyahus role and how this is dragging our nation to conflict with Russia.
priceofcivilization (Houston TX)
If everything about Bill Clinton was true that Republicans like to claim, then this election is between Bill and Hillary. I'd choose Hillary.
GIO (West Jersey)
It strikes me that the same million people keep telling each other how unfit this guy is to be president....like this is a revelation.

We've learned nothing over the past year about either candidate that we didn't know a decade ago.

This just in: Over the next week we're going to find out something else about Donald J. Trump that's offensive. Also, Hillary had meetings with rich people about things they wanted to see done.

Everyone is now an addicted to stupidity. I can't wait for the Race for the White House 2020...it's only 400 days away, and guaranteed to make Trump / Clinton look like public TV.
Bruce (The World)
If you watched the next video, where The Donald "apologizes" (could he squint any harder at that teleprompter, or read more woodenly?), you will have heard him attempt to drag in Bill Clinton, as if that makes Trump's words and actions more reasonable. What a piece of work this guy is. And to people who say guys talk like this - not the guys I know. We certainly weren't raised that way.
Long-Term Observer (Boston)
Revelation (in his own words) about Trump's behavior sound ever more similar to those about Roger Ailes behavior at Fox News. No wonder they're such good friends.
Bell Julian Clement (Washington, D.C.)
Please. What thinking person had not already inferred - the evidence is overwhelming - that this, of course, is the way Trump thinks and speaks when he believes he's in private ? All this "I'm shocked, shocked. . . " is about as convincing as Casablanca's Capt. Renault's.
Ezra Taylor (Queens, NY)
I don't know what everyone is so excited about. Most heterosexual men have this mindset when it comes to women. I'm talking about men that have not been emasculated by this society. Also, if this talk disturbs you, don't ever listen to what your sons and husbands discussions about women and sex. You may drop dead. I think most people already know that. As Trump said, this is nothing but a distraction. Lastly, what does this say about women that allow a rich man to have his way with them? Sounds like female nature to me.
Lino Vari (Adelaide, South Australia)
How much more do we have to endure before this buffoon is unelectable? Surely at this stage the election is a fait accompli, surely....
littlel (Boston)
Trump may not represent all Republicans, but Billy Bush does.
Sligo Christiansted (California)
I didn't like that he was hitting on a married woman (he made comments of his past behavior). His comment about grabbing woman, for a man who could get a lot of women, seemed childish. But for some reason, I laughed at the guy when I heard him talk, because he knows he's being an idiot.
WillyD (New Jersey)
Not a problem. The "deplorables" will still stand tall and vote for him.
Anthony G (Providence)
Hillary called out Trump as a misogynist after the Megyn Kelly fiasco. In response, he accused her of playing "the woman card." Republicans didn't flinch.

Now, the ship is sinking so they want a do-over? If you're familiar with betting on horse racing, this is called "past-posting."
Leslie Duval (New Jersey)
HIs personal qualities are horrible; his business acumen has lost many people, from contractors to shareholders, a lot of money. He's a Con. This election should not be a sideshow of this kind of banter that the media, while appalled at it all, continues to wallow in this swill of ratings driven TV that pretends to be news coverage.

Pay to play news should end. Let's all tune into NPR and dump this drivel channels. Perhaps we can finally learn something about the candidates' policies. Since Hillary is the only candidate with a proven conviction for the rights of women and children, I'm with Her....
Jon Dama (Charleston, SC)
Just because he makes truly disgusting remarks doesn't mean he isn't fit to be president. Not all of our "leaders" were altar boys. Start with JFK and on yeah - Bill Clinton, throw in FDR and the list grows of women abusers. This is old stuff - like his tax return. Stick to the issues.
morfuss5 (New York, NY)
Kelly Ayotte, for one, now deserves not a single vote, either.

The scary outcome is for Don to step down. Wouldn't Pence be elevated? Though Mike's ideas are also offensive and demented in a whole other set of ways, he looks like a wonderfully adult fellow compared to Don. Stay the course, Don! Please don't do the right thing for the first time at the 11th hour.
Jeffry Oliver (St Petersburg, FL)
There is now but one question Trump supporters must ask themselves: Would I want my mother, my sister, my wife...my daughter to be alone in a room with Donald Trump?
terri (USA)
Donald Trump is what Republicans have done to America. Lets show them what we think of them and vote them all out in November.
Lynn Ochberg (Okemos)
I'm ecstatic that Trump has finally gone a bridge too far. He is hideous and abhorrent.
larochelle2 (New York, NY)
These words reflect exactly who he is. In this instance he was caught on tape...how many hundreds weren't? However, his utterances and actions have been obnoxious, dismaying and vile well before he became a candidate, so would any of his supporters really be swayed by this?
Elyse (Maryland)
Two things. Just woke up to his midnight tape. He was defiant, not humble!

Second, I've been telling friends for months Melania would divorce him when this was over. Now I'd bet real money on it. In some ways I feel sorry for her, although she knew who she married.

If he hadn't run for president he could have continued living his fantasy life. Now his life is going to be a mess when the election ends...karma!
Amy Haible (Harpswell, Maine)
It's not just Trump, its the guys on the bus with him. What some men say about women when they think they won't be heard speaks volumes. Sometimes I think the gap is just too wide to cross for these guys. They fake liking women. They really want to live in a world like the Handmaid's Tale.
NRroad (Northport, NY)
Here's hoping Trump is as completely humiliated by the outcome of the election as he deserves.
John (Ann Arbor, MI)
Well, at least one good thing comes out of this. The election is now over.
NoTrump (Somewhere In Time)
The GOP should shoulder 100% of the blame for trump. Let's put the blame squarely where it lies and reject the GOP and it's down ballot candidates. Reject them all.
Dwight Bobson (Washington, DC)
“Anyone who knows me knows these words don’t reflect who I am,” he said.
He's right, these words do not reflect that he is worse. He has moved on to lusting for his daughter.
GOP loyalists denied climate change, this is an even easier denial for them, poorly educated as they are.
Leslie Schwartz (Great Neck)
Oh come on. How can you hold him responsible for something that happened so long ago. He was only 59 at the time. Youthful indiscretion. You can't hold a man in his sixties responsible for sexually assaulting women in his fifties. He was immature, hadn't grown up yet. It's not like he's a black teenager. Then we could call for the death penalty even without any evidence whatsoever.
Tom (Fl Retired Junk Man)
Every guy in America, more probably, every guy in the world wishes at one time or another to be a " Donald Trump" kind of guy with women.

Money is the ultimate aphrodisiac.

There will be a few guys who have forgotten what their testosterone is for.

There will be a few women who have never been excited.

Too bad, for them. Guys sometimes talk rough, among themselves, the locker room talk we all know about. Part of the male order of theings. The guys that don't talk are the ones you worry about.
Gil C. (Hell's Kitchen)
This overshadows the legitimate issues of the election. Do we want a person who is obviously a goon (sorry, but this IS who you are, Donald) to be president even if he might otherwise be qualified.
Any apology that includes the notion that, yeah, I was bad, but this other guy was badder is no apology.
Hillary should insist on separate tables.
Elaine Hyde (Syracuse NY)
It's not about bad language. Trump has admitted to sexually assaulting women, a felony, and bragged that he gets away with it because he is a star.
KayJohnson (Colorado)
Genius Roger Ailes won't be much help on this for Trump. Maybe Donald can call Bill Cosby for advice. A numbingly ridiculous candidate from the GOP. May they go down in flames in November.

Their horrible judgement is not only throwing Trump at us. The religious hard right wants him to do their dirty work against American women in exchange for their support.
CK (Mill Valley, CA)
Trump's tactic of pointing at Bill Clinton right now is like a spineless child in a man's body yelling "he did it too!" Does Trump think that his pattern of traumatizing extramarital assaults on women can somehow be justified or overshadowed by a former president's behavior? If in his attacks on Bill Clinton Trump is suggesting he thinks men in positions of power should not prey on women, then he can't escape the same withering scorn for his own deplorable behavior. Do Trump and his puppeteers think we are all idiots? Does Trump even think at all?
Jim (Austin)
I supported Hillary eight years ago and accepted Mr. Obama as the nominee. I have been satisfied with his performance albeit the obstruction of a racist Republican Congress.

The media and Democrats should not insist Republicans renounce Mr. Trump. Once a Republican Senate nominee renounces Mr. Trump, the Democrat opponent loses their leverage and ability to associate them with Trump. Come on Democrats wake up!

Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Mit Romney, John McCain and Ted Cruz all condemned Mr. Trump for the things he said. But these guys hate the man to begin with. So their condemnation means absolutely nothing. From the beginning, if it were up to them, Trump would not be the nominee. He was nominated by the people of the Republican Party.

Now you media pundits that sit at the networks round table criticizing Trump's latest comments must be a bunch of goodie boys. I can see guys sitting around the camp fire or getting a little rowdy at a bar and talking about women and what they would do with them.

In cases of "locker room banter" women are not present nor in hearing distance. That is why so many women are outraged - they don't know it exists. I've done it and seen and heard others.

But when it comes down to it - it's just talk.

The guy is going to lose. Leave him alone for now.
DEA (New York City)
This tape is sickening. For every woman it will bring back memories of the times men---bosses, strangers on the bus or street--have touched or groped them, or called them names when they said "no, get lost!" Anyone who votes for Donny "grab them by the p--sy" Trump will be saying, by doing so, that this is okay in America, this is appropriate behavior toward women, that men are entitled to do this. Not. Never..This is not just a harmless other kind of goof by a clueless candidate. This is how the rape culture is codified.
JAB (Cali)
The Presidency will only embolden him. No woman will be safe around him.
Alan R Brock (Richmond VA)
Senator McConnell and Rep. Ryan still can't bring themselves to say that citizens should vote for Ms. Clinton instead of this vulgar buffoon.

Let that sink in for a moment people.
Erb (New York)
The NY Times missed the lede. It's not that Trump used vulgar language. The most important thing -- the thing that makes this different from Trump's calling Mexicans rapists or women pigs -- is that he used this vulgar language to say that he routinely sexually assaults women. In other words, he says he has been committing crimes.

Various women have said he assaulted them in this way -- and were quoted in Times and AP stories -- but it hasn't mattered. Will this recording, and probably more to come, make any difference? Not if it's most sickening aspect is underplayed by crucial news sources like the Times.
Nanna (Denmark)
"..a badly wounded and potentially toxic nominee."

The problem in a nutshell!

That man is not a "potentially toxic nominee." He IS toxic.

That many men speak and act the same way toward women is certainly true. With unlimited power, like a modern-day Caligula, where would Trump start and, once started, would he stop?
Sam M. (Sag Harbor, NY)
While Trump made a horrendous "locker room" joke the actual behavior of Bill Clinton, for decades viciously defended and enabled by Hillary, is infinitely more reprehensible.
Glenn (Midwest US)
This is the standard-bearer of the so-called Grand Old Party. Republicans, disavow Trump and all those who share his squalid ideals. You are quickly becoming a sad remnant. Shame on him, and shame of the Republican Party.

It would be the destruction of this nation should he be elected. WE would be the ridicule of the entire world.

I'm enraged by this video. Not as much by his words but that they immediately get off the bus and sexualise this woman who is there to do her job. She offers two professional handshakes, and they put her on the spot and demand hugs. If you are a woman, you have probably been on the receiving end of this scenario, whether it's the creepy old CEO of a company, or your husbands pervy great Uncle. It's probably happened to you and you had to play nice because women are not expected to decline these types of scenarios. You can see how awkward it is. Men, FYI - if you have to ask a woman for a hug, she's probably cringing inside because she would have offered one if that was what she wanted.

Then they proceed down the hall and ask her which man she prefers, a question that is totally sexual, inappropriate, and unanswerable. She can't say either because she can't bruise an ego, so she wittingly backs out of the situation and says both. Smart lady but this is sexual harassment in the workplace taking place before our eyes.

This says that we still have a long ways to go before we realise just how difficult it is for women to play their cards in a work place. If you aren't sexy enough, you will get passed on for that promotion or invitation to the management drinks for your sexier colleague, but if you are too sexy then you are sexualised and no one takes you seriously in the work place. Billy Bush should fired and Donald Trump has no business being POTU.

Beth Grant DeRoos (Angels Camp California)
My question is how can his wife, children Donald Jr, Eric, Ivanka, Tiffany even suggest we support such a misogynist, sexist predator? And why have they tolerated such disgusting behavior. Even Trumps 'apology' was not even an apology. He tried to divert the attention from his vile acts to Bill Clinton who is NOT running for president. Trump needs to man up and grow up!! And don't give me some nonsense about ALL men think and talk like Trump! Ronald Reagan never did!!

This is even better.
It came after Ted Cruz proved (again) he had no soul to sell. Ted thought the last bus was leaving without him, so he jumped aboard. OOOOPS.

The thing that bothers me most about this episode is Pence's spin for his master. Pence claims above all else he is a Christian. He has just shown he is not, because a true Christian would have said privately, but also PUBLICLY, the statements made by Trump were offensive to him (Pence).
That seals it for me about Mike Pence, just another political trollop.

sdw (Cleveland)
Donald Trump is a national embarrassment and totally unqualified to sit in the White House.

The leaders of the Republican Party were derelict in their duty to the nation by allowing this severely damaged man to become their nominee and, finally, in their cowardly failure to denounce Trump and tell voters that they will not vote for him.

Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Mike Pence, Rob Portman, Scott Walker, Ron Johnson, Ted Cruz, Jeff Sessions, John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Kelly Ayotte, John Cornyn, Pat Toomey, Marco Rubio, Joni Ernst, Chuck Grassley, Bob Corker, and so many more . . . continue to disgrace themselves.

To Trump supporters: Ask yourselves if you would have voted for Hitler (who made similar economic promises in 1923-1933, and whose antisemitic biases were well-known). Sexism, like racism, emerges in private moments.
To be honest and fair, many, many, white males have said vulgar and sexist things. Many, many whites, blacks, and ethnics say and have said racist and biased things, in private.
Furthermore, many of the things said in those settings are not fully indicative of the true nature of the speaker....
... and yet....
Trump boasts his many vulgarities... Long, long, ago I, like so many others, decided that he simply was not qualified on so many levels for the Presidency, or for high office.... Like Icarus, his hubris has pushed him to pursue something far above his dignity.
And I whole-heartedly support HER...
... and yet...
This nation has not had the issue-oriented debate it deserves... So the burden is on HER, once elected, to show that she was much, much more than the lesser of two evils.
She must be the great President of her potential.
AND, the G.O.P. needs to dump the racist knuckle-draggers like McConnell to give us a Congress we deserve.
... this is a MOMENT, my friends... to rise and be better....
Marvin Elliot (Newton, Mass.)
He was a bully as a kid that even years at the NY Military Academy couldn't break. Perhaps a stint in the Marines during the Viet Nam war might have helped his mind and heel spur. I note that his apology is for what he said, not for what he did. If you vote for him you are condoning the actions, and acting as an accessory after the fact, complicit in every word and action. The man is nothing short of reprehensible.
TerryO (<br/>)
Why is this being trumped up as 'lewd language'? No matter what words were used, this is a man in power talking about his violation of women within his power. In this case the words don't even matter as much as the fact that the man is bragging about his freedom to assault women. No apology can negate his abuse.

It would have been smarter to release this the morning after the debate in Sunday.

Trump can only go up from that lousy performance during the previous debate. Ratings were likely going to be weak, as you would want them. But now EVERYONE will be tuning in just to see how he responds to the inevitable question about this. And instead of the obnoxious roaring beast they would have gotten, Trump will be humble and repentant. He will go out of his way to show viewers the 'Presidential Trump'.

He won't be evasive in his answer. He will be direct. There will be an admission that he's not perfect. He will apologize for offending anyone. Then he will appeal to the viewers rational side. He'll point out that there is still the reality of the issues the country faces and imply that petty gossip from a decade ago doesn't affect the calculus of The Issues. And there ARE many to are receptive to his ideas.

Originally, it was Clinton who wanted to discuss the issues, while Trump just hurled personal attacks and distracted the voters with things not functionally relevant. But there has been an emerging juxtaposition of trends lately. I think this will force the completion of those trends.

How many times have you been CERTAIN that he was finally a goner, that he can't possibly survive the latest bombshell? And how many times has he whipped out some crazy political jujitsu and profit from it? It's possible that you haven't killed the beast, but only tamed him to be more Presidential.
michael (oregon)
Gee...I guess this tape is a big surprise, huh? There is certainly nothing in Mr Trump's repertoire of behavior and speech during the last year that might have suggested he is...what? a big mouth, a sixteen year old caught in an old man's body, vile, a braggart, hopelessly clueless, too stupid to remember this tape existed?

But, he is right about one thing. His language does represent a certain "locker room" type bravado. Fortunately, most males outgrow that type thought and language when they become men, certainly by the time they become parents.

The American men that have outgrown the sexist trash talk Trump engages in should have recognized his campaign-trail bravado for what it is some time ago.
John Smith (Ottawa, Canada)
Trump cannot even apologize properly, throwing in jabs at Bill Clinton, who isn't running for office this round, Hillary Clinton. There was nothing human, humane or humble about his statement, just an apology for an inconvenience in his life.

The Republicans I know personally are all decent people. May I appeal to those of you who are Republican. Trump is no Republican. To not vote Republican this time is not betraying your party. To vote for him is.
A. (Glazier)
For anyone to say these things is awful but for a father . . . there are no words.
Liz (Redmond, WA)
Those words reflect EXACTLY who Donald Trump is.
Ed Fontleroy (Ky)
I genuinely cannot watch the US Presidential debate with my 9 year old children this Sunday because the subject/matter is likely to be sexually inappropriate.

Holy Cow! America has jumped the shark!
Joseph Cyr-Cizziello (Charlotte)
Trump defenders are out in force...the people who think rape victims are either faking it, inviting it, or can't get pregnant if they are "legitimately" raped. It's not the words, it's the utter hypocrisy of Trump and the political party he now leads.
Dorothy (Evanston, IL)
Why on earth would any woman want to have sex with this man?

I say let him stay on the ticket- we can only hope...after years of obstructing Pres Obama, the Rep deserve a candidate like Trump- but the American public doesn't.

I would say he's a pig, but will the NYT publish that?
DTOM (CA)
I guess there are no further questions about who and what Trump is.
Frequent Flier (USA)
Melania's lawyers are drawing up a yuuuge divorce settlement even as we speak.

I reckon other guys opinions on this question would be great. No matter what country you're from…

I've now listened to this most recent Trump tape... Have I got it wrong? Does it not sound like predatory behavior?

To me, it sounds both contemptible and abusive behaviour. the pattern has changed - it's gone from woman and money, to presidency and country.

I so hope I am wrong. Wake up America! From abroad, this guy is your worst domestic terrorist. Trump's very behaviour, in ordinary terms, can be viewed as criminal.

And PS: America, for a country that has huge opinion. If you're a superpower, you might want to listen to how you appear by the rest of the world. Wake up! It's a crazy and immature state of affairs, at a political level.
ASB (CA)
Here's the problem: if Trump steps down, Pence steps up and that's not good for Hillary. Be careful what you ask for....

Trump is sorry he got caught.
If he was really sorry before today, the Alicia Machado thing would have never happened.

Someone in GOP leadership needs to get out the hook.

Donald Trump has thoroughly cooked his own goose.

Trump attempting to have sex with a married woman while married to Melania?

Oh my god, his apology video, if it's possible, is even worse. It's so obviously disingenuous, and the way he pivots to attack the Clintons at the end.... I am actually shaking with disgust. He has absolutely no capacity for regret... or any redeeming human qualities, whatsoever.
Trevor (Diaz)
Trump should be deported back to his native Germany. But I am sure Germany don't want him either.
BBB (www)
Trump boasts about bad behavior. Bill Clinton doesn't boast about it.
Harley Leiber (Portland,Oregon)
Trump has never hidden the fact he is a pig. It's only the American pubic that requires having proof rubbed in their faces that it has taken this long for the outrage to peak. Trump is a 70 year old fat, self important, womanizing, "Playboy Era" indoctrinated, sexually deviant, pig. The fact he is now apologizing is proof that he knows the depths of the egregiousness of his behavior. Forget the race for POTUS for just a second and consider the man. He is just a pig with money to root around in rather than mud. A carney in a suit. A bigot, a misogynist, a liar, and a racist. The American people, left or right, cannot allow this slime to enter the Whitehouse. He is despicable.
G (Nyc)
This is the Trump version of the Ray Rice video and we know what that means.

Complete lack of moral and ethical character.

Our kids are watching and our future leaders are being shaped by the racism, selfishness, chauvinism, arrogance and ignorance of Donald Trump. I have had enough of this fool.

Disgusting, but not that much different from Bill.

Perhaps Mike Pence will now at least stop referring to Trump as "this good man." Or is even that too much to ask?

Turn out the lights, the party's over.
KimberlyInOhio (Columbus, OH)
How can anyone be shocked by this when everything Trump has said or done thus far has shown them his true self? This is just one more instance of his absolute disdain for anyone whom he views as less powerful/valuable than himself.
Tom Ontis (California)
About 10:30 pm here on the Left Coast. Just saw the tape that is referred to. My mouth was agape the entire time. But, knowing what we know about Donald Trump, it IS NOT OUT OF CHARACTER FOR HIM!!!!!!!
Few of the words he spoke on his 'apology tape' were about him apologizing; but rather the actions of Hillary Clinton and Mr. Bill and the challenges they faced in the 1990s while Mr. Bill was President.
Me thinx it is hilarious that many to Repubs are calling on him to step aside. It isn't going to happen. Trump is in love with himself and always has been. These revelations are going to tip Hillary's totals even higher. It just may tip the Congressional races over to the Dems.
Michael Oscars (Vancouver)
Trump makes Cosby look like Bambi.
T.L.Moran (Idaho)
And now in an angry video he semi-apologizes saying that the furor over his abusive language and behavior is a "distraction" from "real issues."

Excuse me, but assaulting, despising and disrespecting women IS a real issue. Women are REAL PEOPLE. Over 50% of the species, in fact.

If Trump really wants to deal with "real-world issues" he needs learn this. Fast. Right now, his "apology" is just further insult.
Ellen Ganley (Fairbanks, Ak)
Do you have a mother, sister, daughter, daughter-in-law, or grand-daughter? How can you justify voting for Donald Trump? Isn't your daughter the most beautiful child ever, only exceeded by your grand-daughter? Do you want some orange-faced pervert like Donald Trump grabbing her lady parts? He's a pig. If you vote for him, so are you.

Who's the real rapist?
Don Oberbeck (Colorado)
Trump is toast.
styleman (San Jose, CA)
The fact that he is still standing is incredible. As Bill Maher said tonight, shaking his head in his hands - "Is this really happening?" Any of the thousand and one outrages committed by Trump would have sunk any other politician. The man is like the Man of Steel, Dark Side Version. And Ryan and McCain (Trump's "loser" for being shot down and captured by the North Vietnamese) still holding on to this uncouth barbarian? No voter with an ounce of intelligence and moral responsibility would blame them for abandoning Trump. And his rag tag cackle of supporters who still support him!? A testament to their intelligence. He (and they) are an embarrassment to this country and the laughing stock of the world, were he and they supporters not so scary.
uga muga (Miami fl)
For me it's great for this to cause a sensation but it's just an example of what some, and I don't know how many, men are really like in their natural and culturally-bred psyches. Often, people hate the truth. It can be shocking, scary and dangerous.

By the way, my NYT pseudonym is a character in personal literature ramblings. Uga Muga was an Australopithecus Afarensis well ahead of his time. Amongst other innovations, he discovered how to knock out women without killing them.
Bob Ogletree (Dallas, TX)
Donad Trump IS a sleazy little money grubber with the morals of an alley cat. Thankfully, he continues to self destruct on an almost daily basis. One thing Mitt Romney and I can surely agree on - "the Donald" IS CHOKING LIKE A DOG!

Chicken Little was right.

Baloney. This is exactly how I expect you to talk in private all the time. A public ignoramus and vulgarian is not going to suddenly develop taste and decorum when the cameras are off.

Brrrrrrrrrrr.

PS: Dear Republicans Who Have Backed This Person - shame on you.
incredulous (Dallas, TX)
The sad thing is that this probably won't be the biggest landslide in presidential election history.
Martin (Atlanta)
Donald Trump's brutish behavior toward women is eerily similar to that of the Republican party's cheerleader-in-chief for the last 20 years-Roger Ailes and his culture of objectifying women at Fox News.
Paul Anthony (California)
Why is everyone making a big deal about Trump in this matter? There should be MORE of an uproar over the so-called ardent "Christian" running mate who is defending Trump. Trump is a sleaze; everyone knows that, but Pence is far worse--he's a vile hypocrite! And we all know what Jesus thought of them.
RJK (Middletown Springs, VT)
WHAT TOOK THEM SO LONG? Trump's incredibly gross vulgarity has been quite apparent for a long time to anyone with an IQ over 80. I once respected people like Jon Huntsman but was sadly surprised when he endorsed Trump. All the other clowns like Ryan and Pence and the millions of people duped by the Donald should take a long look at themselves and wonder "what took me so long?"
Mari (Camano Island, WA)
He is vulgar, he is a conman, narcissist and misogynist. His apology was lame. He said he apologized.....but. It's the "but" that then discredits e dry word he said to begin with. He went on to deflect ".... But Bill did worse.." Exactly, what a bully says! He was bad, but Bill was worse. Grow up man!

This folks, is the presidential candidate of the holier-than-thou-family-values party! Time will tell if he will lose the conservative Christians. Can't imagine they will accept his weak non-apology. That a man wanting to be president speaks this way about women, about the disabled, about immigrants, about Muslims....it's not just this one scandal is a whole collection of vile. Deplorable!
Marc (New York City)
What I heard was a regular guy talking when guys are together.

Now there, Mr. Ryan, you're beginning to see the light. Not nearly fast enough, but, as Chairman Mao once said, the longest journey begins with a single step.
Ian Schwartz (San Diego)
I don't know. I love the NY Times as much as I despise Donald Trump, maybe even more. Presidents come and go, but a good paper is timeless, and I'm not sure how I feel about how the paper is on a mission to bring him down. He deserves it, it has to be done, but I don't think I'll be able to read the paper the same way once this guy is forgotten in two months.
Jbee (Chicago)
Now we get to see what the GOP is made of.
Constable Plod (Tokyo)
Deplorable? Despicable!
Get it together America. To most of the rest of the world it appears as if mass-insanity has driven you to even consider this man as presidential material.

Politicians who backed Trump, get out while you can ... the longer you wait, the worse it will get
JohnB (Upstate NY)
Give Trump a break. This is an old video clip from 11 years ago. Those comments were made when he was only a young-and-impulsive lad of 59.
Wendy Morris (Wellesley, Ma.)
One wonders what his own daughters -- and wife -- think about him now. I imagine it must be especially hard to defend your own father at times like this.
Martin (Germany)
I just imagined him becoming President and then meeting Angela Merkel at the G7 or something. I know my chancellor, she's as cool as they come. But I wouldn't put it past her to floor him with a well placed kick. And that would make her chancellor for life in my country!

THIS is what the GOP has to offer? This is what the primary voters elected? This has the support of all the other candidates and the leadership of the party? This orange-skinned, ferret-haired womanizer, this draft-dogger loudmouth, this con-man, tax-evader, business-shredder is THE BEST that the "conservative" party in the U.S. can come up with? Or even ALLOW to represent them in any election?

I don't know anything about party rules and regulations in the U.S., but I can tell you that in Germany you can't simply say "I am a Social Democrat", you have to formally join the party, pay your dues and adhere to their code of conduct. And if you don't the kick you out, publicly, and condemn you to heck.

Is there nobody in the U.S. GOP capable of stopping this train wreck? Mr. Priebus, you are supposed to be the chairman, how can you allow DT to damage your party this way? Mr. Ryan, Mr. McConnell, you are the GOP leaders in the government, can you really live with what this man says on a daily basis?

I don't like one-party-rule. But it seems to me that DT is giving exactly that to the U.S. for decades to come. Stop it now or suffer eternally!
eve (san francisco)
The real shock of this is that Mitch McConnell, Priebus and Paul Ryan have all said what they've just said. Paul Ryan must have traveled to Lourdes because he can suddenly see and hear!
Mark Schaeffer (Somewhere on Planet Earth)
Can it get anymore disgusting? I do not even know what to say. I am disgusted, shocked, disgusted, shocked...almost vomiting.

Enough! Take away Donald's citizenship and send him to the Middle East, or Waziristan, Pakistan, where he can have many co-wives, harem of beautiful obedient women and treat women like meat to be groped, sliced, cut, marinated and devoured.

Donald is just another kind of cannibal. Kindly admit this!

I wish the NY Times would call this what it is. It is not "speaking in extraordinarily vulgar terms about women," it is Trump advocating for and describing his admitted practice of sexually assaulting women. Calling it anything other than that is doing a disservice to women.
Mike (Williamsville, NY)
This subject will almost certainly come up in Sunday’s debate. For the best effect, Hillary’s response should be something like:

“While such behavior from my opponent is certainly reprehensible, in light of some of Bill’s history, I would be hypocritical in saying this disqualifies him from the Presidency. That said however, what REALLY disqualifies Mr. Trump are his misguided positions on climate change, taxes, health care, immigration, Iran, jobs, guns, trade, ...

This does two things: (1) It immunizes her from Trump' likely planned attacks about her husband's indiscretions; and (2) It shifts the narrative from Trump’s brand of “trash talk” debating to an in-depth discussion of substantive issues. This is very definitely her turf, not his.
friscoeddie (san fran)
Trump and Caligula are twins, 'All women belong to me'; One an emperor the other a STAR wannabe president
al (long beach ny)
Hypocritical GOP racing to distance themselves from Trump's abusive language. Apparently Trump abuses women one at a time. The institution that is today's GOP wants to dictate EVERY WOMAN'S health choices, block maternal leave, equal pay...should I go on?
Sara Miles (San Francisco)
If Trump tries to bring up Bill Clinton during the debate, Hillary should just look at him and say, calmly, "Are you trying to blame me for what my husband did to our marriage?"
landsaend (Newark, CA)
This is one conversation that happened to be recorded and has come to light. Could anybody doubt that Trump engaged in hundreds of such stomach-turning boasts over the years. When he says that this is not who he is, what he means is "what you hear is what you're going to get".

Sexist behavior unbecoming a Christian man. But, let's face it, we always knew Trump would let his Pence down!

Too little, too late, no sincerity, and he can't resist blaming others. Grade: F.

That 'apology' tape shows a red-faced angry Trump with furrowed brow, frowning, straining to speak. He looks like he's in a rage.

Wait for the meltdown we know is coming. He won't stay calm for long.

I think he's going to drop out, probably won't even show up for the debate. He'll be too angry to control himself.

WWND?

What would Nixon do?

Drop out and blame everyone else for his own behavior. Say self-pitying things, act like he's a victim.

That will be Trump's playbook.
Francis (Brooklyn)
After watching this video, it's crystal clear that Trump is unfit for any leadership. Looks like I'll skip the debate on Sunday night as I can't stand watching this nonsense anymore.

Aren´t there lawsuits against him in court at the moment, including a rape case? I suppose, if the women, he molested now got together and sued collectively, he might very well have another 20 years without paying taxes ...

Unfortunately for the hapless, lost and unwanted Mike Pence, he already hitched his wagon to Donald Trump. He teamed up with the same Donald Trump we all knew from the 80's and 90's, the same Donald Trump we hear talking back in '05, the very same Donald Trump we heard similarly offending one and all over the past couple weeks, months, years.

Somehow, Mike Pence decided, "Sure, I can run on a ticket with this fine, upstanding Christian. A business man running on his sound business practices. A true leader of men."

There is no one on the Trump bus who gets a free pass--just because Trump finally--completely--opens his trench coat and, as the "entertainer" he is, gives the whole world a thrill. The grotesque reality show is at the crash-and-burn episode.

So while people have asserted that Trump can step down, admit defeat and let Mike Pence take over? Oh, no. He's done too.

The evangelical Pence can simply stand with the other luminary Trump cheerleaders--and wonder what on earth he was thinking. Because you look at Trump--and then look at his people? It says something. Beyond his reality tv supporters, how about: Dick Cheney, Kid Rock, Donald Rumsfeld, Chris Christie, Mike Tyson, Rudy Guiliani, Ted Cruz, Ann Coulter, Ted Nugent, Paul Ryan and on and on. Notice anything...kind of nutty here?

The war criminals, wingnuts, racists, whack-jobs and empty heads who stand with this guy? You go down with this guy.

This is all of us: waving goodbye...to the republican party.
Alvin K. (SoCal)
This nation is currently caught up in both an unprecedented political firestorm and a torrential windstorm. Following each tragedy, however, our nation has come together even stronger.

"Romantic advances" as a term applied to this type of behavior needs to be discarded. It's also time to put the brakes on magical, dewy-eyed thinking about what is animal behavior, sexual contact, and primitive impulses. Trump in his orange cranial apparatus is surely no Harlequin Romance sporran-clad hero. He is not civilized or socialized. He follows no star other than his own artificial tinsel. He is no master of himself, let alone fit to lead anyone else. He is a shambolic amoral anomaly. Let him be more properly assigned to a zoo or laboratory. Hooray for Jon Huntsman and Jason Chaffetz; if only they were Democrats.
I Believe The Media Is ResposibleThe Rise Of Trump (Scottsdale, AZ)
Shame. Shame ,shame if this country elects a man like this. He is the worst of the worst. He represents the ugly American. He makes me ashamed that we American can even think of him as winning the presidency.

Donald J. Trump belongs on a sex offender registry. That man should not be permitted anywhere near the White House, even as a tourist.

LOL, so much for his attacks on the Clintons. Now, at last, republicans have the smoking gun they need to openly disavow him.

Interesting that when Trump was floating violence against the DEM candidate ("....maybe something happens...') there was nothing like the storm we see now in the Republican party.

Obviously there still was something missing?

This orange albatross needs to be hung around the neck of the Republican forever.

Wrong Donald. Anyone rational person knows the tape is totally consistent with the you marketed to the public. You cannot apologize for who you are and without admitting you need help. The public is not your enabler. Cease campaigning, admit that HC should be president and concede the election or forfeit it on the basis that you ate unfit.

Maher is right; Pence did wake up to find himself handcuffed to a dead hooker! Great story in Huff Post; Pence threw the press out of Tony Packo's
where he was supposed to be filmed pointing to Trump's bun. 1st of all stupid publicity idea that then turns out to be absolutely ludicrous as Trump is heard bragging about assaulting women and they like it because he is a star.
No sympathy for Ryan, Pence and company, they knew what he was when they endorsed him and tried to pretend he was normal and now that it has hit puke level and they can't look in the mirror, they will soon be telling us they never endorsed him.

Thanks to the editors of the Times for printing these remarks verbatim, rather than using euphemisms. A reader can't get the full flavor of Mr. Trump's offensiveness from descriptive euphemisms. You will catch flak from Trump apologists -- so be it.

Game over for Donald Trump. Skip the the next two debates and drop out of the race altogether. He left the human race long ago. The Donald Trump of 2005 is no different from the Donald Trump of 2016, only older but just as creepy.
Ricardo (Brooklyn, NY)
Dear Republican Party: You weren't shocked or sickened when Donald Trump insulted Mexicans, or Muslims, or African Americans, or female reporters, or reporters with disabilities. You weren't shocked or sickened when Donald Trump wouldn't release his tax returns, or when he boasted that paying zero taxes made him "smart". But now you are suddenly shocked and "sickened" by these comments he made in 2005? Better late than never, I suppose, but... was all that other stuff he said OKAY?
Jeff (California)
Republicans say they are afraid to let Trump run the government, saying that Trump is a total embarrassment, yet… somehow they grudgingly submit their endorsement???

I have to ask, what is the problem Mr. Cruz, Mr. Rubio, Mr. Ryan and Mr. McConnell, afraid that Mr. Trump will treat you like Rosie O’Donnell?

What would your mothers think of Mr. Trump’s comments? Are they cute and adorable, or would your mothers call him filthy and a deplorable?

Just think how proud your mothers would be, if they were able to raise such men of high degree, who were able to take a stand, and for once completely disavow this man.

Alas, I guess it is not to be, but now I know it is America first…. right behind the GOP.

I spoke to a 92-year-old female business owner today with a mouth like a lady when she wants it and a mouth like a sailor when she doesn't. My classy little 92-year-old could "dirty talk" Trump under the bus any day.

This was private banter that could have been spoken by a man or a woman, btw (LGBT equality!). It was illegal for Billy Bush to secretly record and egg Trump on with ALL TALK about his alleged sexual prowess.

Not a single women has come forward saying that she was assaulted by Trump! ALL GUY TALK. Pompous, exaggerated!

1) No crime to brag about your libido (drawn to someone like a magnet)
2) No crime to eat a Tic-Tac before greeting someone
3) No crime to compare your man parts to "furniture"
4) No crime to make up a bad analogy of Grabbing a woman by something not grabable (you grab a Bull by the Horns, maybe). Another meaningless braggart comment.
5) No crime to say you tried to score with a woman and to say she did not want you.

Gosh, I have heard far worse just today from a 92-year-old woman.
John Powell (New York)
That actress in the clip is brave to put up with the inappropriateness duo of Bush and Trump. She has obviously had to do that a lot and she handles it like a pro. Bravo to her and also sorry to her! Trump doesn't come back from this among many politicians who have backed him, especially women.

Let's not let Billy Bush off the hook here, either. Skeevy is the word that comes to mind. The Today Show really, really needs to do some housecleaning.
LW (Helena, MT)
And the male supporters he just grabs by the gun barrel. They just let him do anything.
Disgusted! (CT)
Shame on the Donald!

Worse yet, shame on the Times!

Repeating the vulgarity in plain site gives Trump the sick and twisted forum he so obviously craves. I hope the Times' editors don't have to face the music as I had to when my son asked in frank terms why a reputable newspaper would repeat such filth! I'm not angry...just deeply disappointed.
Greg Rohlik (Fargo)
Trump is the Messiah to his base and they will not abandon him for this or any other revelation. If they feel that his perverse nature will impede his ability to run all the non-white people out of the country for them, they'll instate a modern jus primae noctis from their ranks to keep him in the trim.
PaulP (Knoxville, TN)
Well, I always wondered how Republicans believe some of the things they do or say some of the things they say. Thanks to Corey Lewandowski and Donald Trump, I now get it. This is the kind of thing gets "talked about around the dining room table" at the homes of "many people". That's both a revelation and pretty frightening. Count me out for a dinner invitation.
Rae (New Jersey)
Yay, he's not quitting!! And second "apology" ridiculous, too.
MarkR (Hong Kong)
The level this has gone to reflects the transparency of the digital age. Both candidates are ruthless, and power mongers, which is what it takes to be president of the Good old USA. Do you think George Washington or Thomas Jefferson ever made rude remarks ? Just there were no recordings or digital devices to put people under the microscope. What we are witnessing is the disruption of the US as we were taught in the history books, we were and will be forever a nation of leaders....Our next US leaders are distributed and connected. Regardless of who gets voted in they will be removed if they don't do the right thing. Let's watch the upcoming debate...More slash and burn !
DbB (Sacramento, CA)
To the millions of anxious Hillary Clinton supporters who have been checking poll numbers every day, you can exhale now. It's over.
Jenny (Florida)
1. The New York Times should publish the full transcript of Trump's remarks.

2. Mark Burnett should release Apprentice film of Trump discussing women.
S. Lopez (Tahoe City, CA)
#hewhomustnotbenamed He who must not be named... President of the United States.

Please vote for Hillary Clinton.

HE is worse than Voldemort:

"In the second book, Rowling establishes that Voldemort hates non-pure-blood wizards, despite being a half-blood himself. In a 2000 interview with the BBC, Rowling described Voldemort as a self-hating bully: "Well I think it is often the case that the biggest bullies take what they know to be their own defects, as they see it, and they put them right on someone else and then they try and destroy the other and that's what Voldemort does."[5] In the same year, Rowling became more precise about Voldemort. She began to link him to real-life tyrants, describing him as "a raging psychopath, devoid of the normal human responses to other people's suffering".

Sound familiar?
Nick (Houston)
Can't wait to hear how Rush defends this on Monday.
John (Baldwin, NY)
Unfortunately, this, I believe, does not lose Mr. Trump a lot of voters. I think of a line from Paul Simon's classic song, The Boxer: "All lies and jest, till a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest".

Sounds like a Trump voter to me.
bertzpoet (Duluth)
Republican leaders: A case of ships leaving the sinking rat.
Zoby (Chicago)
You reap what you sow - the Republicans have been making horrible comments against women for many many years - single moms, childcare, equal pay, abortion, welfare moms, rape - no way do I believe their supposed shock. Give me a break...
Nina (New York, NY)
Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, says “As the father of three daughters, I strongly believe that Trump needs to apologize directly to women and girls everywhere, and take full responsibility for the utter lack of respect for women shown in his comments on that tape,”

How big of you, Mr. McConnell. How could you possibly think that empty gesture would be accepted by women and girls?
West of Center (SC)
I'm laying in bed in Charleston SC as Matthew rolls in. Winds already 40 k. Three days of bad news and preparation and many days of cleaning up to come. And still it's been grand to have a couple of days of news when Trump was not above the entire above the fold news.
And now this.
Hopefully Donald will disappear in the coming days as will Matthew.. and we will clean up after he is gone
New Yorker (NYC)
31 more days until the election. 32 days until we never hear from him again.
Doug Trabaris (Chicago)
The Donald is the monster spawned by the GOP.
Eric (Texas)
This whole thing can be blamed on his microphone. It was on.
Boudica (Applachica)
He bragged about sexual assault. Please call out his comments about casual violence
aj (az)
if he thinks as a star women let him do everything he wants. Imagine what he would feel or think when he is president!!!!
GMR (Atlanta)
Please do not call him a misogynist pig, as this is an insult to pigs everywhere. He is not worth the effort to try and find disparaging adjectives for. Just don't vote for him or any republican, if you want to make America great again.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Maybe if people felt more ashamed about enabling psychopaths like Trump, they'd stop doing it.

"I am a celebrity, there are no rules for me."

You own this monster.
DipThoughts (San Francisco, CA)
What should Hillary Clinton say after shaking hands with Donald Trump on Sunday's debate? "I just shook hands with the nominee of the Republican Party, not that Donald Trump from Friday's news."
Rudolf Dasher Blitzen (Florida)
My dear Mr. Paul Ryan: What took you long? The moral fabric of our Republic needed your valuable help much earlier, now it may be too late already. Great leaders make a stand on principle as soon as amorality shows its dangerous and disgusting head above the murky waters where it lives. You stayed passively silent and complacent putting what you believed was the good for our party above the good for our country's moral standing. That is a tremendous error from a leader in your position, with your stature. Sincerely from a disgusted American who voted Republican all his life.
Iced Teaparty (NY)
Trump is a man who uses his power without self-regulation, doing so wherever and whenever to gratify his base desires:

"grabs them by the pussy" whenever he wanted because of his elevated status as a star.

His race for the presidency is now all but over, his chances of victory nil, his reputation shot; disgrace is all that awaits him.

But I am fearful for my country that this man, who in my mind's eye I picture stalking the country, was invited so near to the presidency by so many voters.

You see a man totally unable to limit his power: he grabs their "pussies" because he can
JD (Salt Lake City, Utah)
If you call the Today show at 212 664 4602 you can actually access Billy Bush's phone extension by spelling his name using the keys on your phone. (The recording sounds like the extension is 42785.) His message says that he's out making American great again. No joke.
WMLA (Allentown)
Finally, the beginning of the End for Trump! What took so long?
Paul (Georgia)
Clearly America could never stand for a man like this as President. Can you imagine him around young interns? Oh, I bet you can. He will drop by just 1%.
Erin (NYC)
11 years ago and the man has changed more than Clinton or her husband have for the better.
Donald J. Trump will be elected ..much to the left wing media's gut wrenching cries.
RPW (Jackson)
I wonder if Ariana Zuker's career takes off after this? She is the pretty girl from Days of Our Lives whose face has launched a thousand media stories that will end Trump's foray into politics for all time. Thank you Ariana!
AJ Garcia (Florida)
I wonder how many of the Evangelical church groups voting for Trump would feel about their new savior if this were played to the whole congregation. Like right in the middle of one of their pastors hour-long speeches about the virtues of family and chastity, some wag in the audience just sneaks up to the sound system and pops in a tape of The Donald talking about women's privates like low hanging fruit he wants to pluck. How would all those old sanctimonious geezers feel about voting for him then? Would they feel shame at their own hypocrisy? Anger at having been duped by a sleazy conman? Or will they just blink, shake their heads, and once again, for the sake of God and country, pretend to whole thing never happened? Think hard on it, because this tape is never going to go away. You're going to have to explain it and great many other things to your children and grandchildren. How will you be able to hold yourselves up as moral examples to them when this is the sort of man you choose as your leader?
Steve (California)
Mr. Trump said he would spend Saturday preparing for his second debate with Hillary Clinton.

Oh, now he's serious and needs to prepare.
Gary Anderson (Colorado)
People are missing the essence of Trumps' statements;
Trump has admitted that he is a Serial Sexual Predator!!!
Certainly a Pervert of the First Order!!!
Tony Verow MD (Durango, CO)
So.....how is Reinces effort to remain as RNC chair next year going?
Karen Harrell (Morton, IL)
President Barack and Michelle Obama,
Thank you for 8 years of dignity and inspiration. You and your family have shown the American people and the world what leadership and honor look like in a culturally rich and diverse nation. In spite of the deplorable new lows of this election, I continue to believe in your vision of "Hope and Change" for our country. I miss you already.

The ad to run now is this clip juxtaposed with the interview of Ivanka saying her father is, "not a groper."

So, at the end it was a Bush who defeated Trump.
MPB (NJ)
Republicans, remember your mantra about what will we tell our children, during the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal?

What are you telling your children now about Trump's comments?
Bert Floryanzia (Sanford, NC)
Man, Trump got Snagged, Yo.

Big Time.

And it was a Pitiful Snag.

Straight-up Pitiful.

All on tape.

He can't deny anything.

I can't stop laughing.

For all of Trump supporters who are trying to equate their candidates words and deeds to those of Bill Clinton, there is a very big difference between them: CONSENT.
Ken (Pittsburgh)
Only a 7-year old -- and not a particularly bright one -- believes that hitting Johnny over the head is somehow excused or even mitigated by the fact that Davy hit Jimmy over the head even harder.
Matt (Plymouth Meeting)
Trump married Melania on Jan. 22, 2005 so I think the video date would be of great interest to her and a few million other Americans. Can we find that out?
Leslie (Illinois)
I cannot understand why people are so surprised to hear Trump speak this way. He's said many horrible and nasty things about women all along, even defended himself when people objected. What about this particular exchange is so surprising? I find it to be perfectly in character. So how is this going to cause his demise? Perhaps some secret Republican plot to get rid of their obviously toxic candidate, finally? What took you so long?
Slim Pickins (San Francisco)
Profound..... we find ourselves in a year where nearly half the country has nominated Trump while he runs against a woman for President of the US. Meanwhile, his own party continues to support him despite their own judgement, many of them people of faith. Pence outright LIES at the debate. Trumps children, especially his daughter Ivanka who seems to have strong opinions about women's rights, still supports her father and denies he gropes women. He hides his taxes, only to find out that his tax accountant claimed nearly a billion dollars in losses that allow him to not PAY anything into our system for several years, and yet he is appalled by infrastructure (and blames the Dems for this?!!) Oh and so much more.

We are looking into the mirror of America and it is UGLY.
Art (Huntsville Al)
Ryan is a little late in realizing what Trump is.
TrueBeliever (Columbus OH)
Oh paleeez!!! I have heard a whole lot worse. At least he didn't molest women with cigars. This is just another CNN attempt to discredit Donald Trump. He is not as bad as Bill Clinton. Don Lemon makes lewd comments on air all the time about other men. Do not allow the media to skew your views of what is really going on in this election. It is not about Donald Trump but it is about who you want on the Supreme Court and Donald Trump will deliver
HomeExchange (NYC)
A new low. How many times have we heard that about Trump? This is what sinks him, not the thousands of people he defrauded, vendors he robbed, his love of neon Nazis and dictators, his clear Narcissistic Personality Disorder diagnosis, mocking disabled people, etc, etc? Republicans, for shame.
Bobeau (Birmingham, AL)
Thank God for the Washington Post. A great editor makes such a difference. The NY Times has been scooped by the Post time and again this year. If it weren't for the Post we could be facing a much greater chance of Trump being elected.
Scott (Guadalajara, Mexico)
Has Guliani spun this one as evidence of Trump's genius yet?
Carl Hultberg (New Hampshire)
Isn't this kind of like a football game spiked by an intentional fumble on the goal line in the 4th quarter? If you were going to throw the game this would be time and the way to do it that would do the worst damage.
Bharathram Sivasubramanian (Montreal, QC, Canada)
Did anyone catch the irony in Trump's remarks about Gerald Ford falling off the bus? It looks like it's the Trump campaign that's about to fall of a cliff now!
Dennis (New York City)
Being a native New Yorker, I as well as many other denizens of this borough are not shocked in the least by yet another example of Donald Trump's horrendous behavior.

Decades ago, Spy Magazine coined this expression of Trump. It applied then, it applies even more so 30 years later. Trump was, is and at 70 years of age will be the "small-fingered vulgarian" we have grown to hate. Living in this city, we see many shysters come and go, especially in the real estate market, but Trump takes the cake. This guy is not only a bad businessman his many bankruptcies have left thousands holding the bag when Trump's projects goes belly-up.

Does he care? Has he ever cared about all whom he has hurt? Are you kidding? This guy gleefully is laughing all the way to the bank, and now he is laughing at all the "losers" who voted for him in good conscience. Trumpists across America are getting a taste of what Trump has been doing for decades, bamboozling people, some who have invested their savings in his scams.

Trump could care less about making America great. Trump is in this for one thing and one thing only, to make himself more famous. He's in it for his own self-gratification. Is the Trump con sinking in out there? Are you finally starting to get it? Trump has taken you to the cleaners, as he has taken so many others. Trump is playing you for fools, and you don't seem to care. Astounding.

To those trying to rationalize these latest revelations, what you say now isn't erased on November 9th.
Lindy s (Scottsdale)
At the time this comment was made, Donald Trump was a public figure speaking to a member of the press in a vehicle that was clearly labeled as such. it is disingenuous to now claim that his "locker room" vulgarity should have been off the record. All of America needs to listen to what this man is saying... he keeps telling us over and over again exactly who he is.
Gayatri (Singapore)
After a while, I am getting so sick of reading of Donald Trump attitude towards women. I am sure there are thousand of men who are just like ,Gandhi,Donald Trump ,Bill Clinton and many more, who get away from immoral behaviour easily as woman in their own lives, have chosen to adopt 'close one eye'attitude for their own benefit just like Hillary Clinton!

above the rest
Alyce (PNW)
I think he's done!
Bergen Citizen (Englewood, NJ)
When John McCain failed to vet Sarah Palin before selecting her as his running mate, he was widely criticized for failing to avoid the obvious catastrophe that awaited him. Now, the entire Republican Party, or at least that portion of the Republican Party which is responsible for nominating Donald Trump as their party's candidate for president, has made a much more egregious error. Fool me once....? I only wish that the "liberal media" would replay excerpts from the Republican National Convention.

Hurricane Trump now a Category 7, heading up the Republican coastline.

Please keep in mind Mike Pence is a guy who wanted to pass a law requiring funerary rites for aborted, or miscarried, fetuses. He may come off as smooth, compared to the cretin he's running with, but he's a dangerous lunatic.

What hope is there?
MsPea (Seattle)
Poor Melania--she had married Trump only a few months before his vile tirade was recorded, where he admits he attempted to assault a married woman, but she rebuffed him. And, people think Hillary is crazy for staying with Bill?

I have a young daughter, having Trump as President is quite horrifying to think he'd be her first memory of a president. BUT Let's take a play out the 1990's Democrat playbook. Who came out when faced with these accusations and said... "We need to get back to the issues that the American public cares about" sorry, it wasn't just Bill Clinton operating in a vacuum it was the entire Democrat machine behind him, which included who? Yes, Hillary. Where was this same outrage at that time? Hillary is now on record through WikiLeaks as saying you say "one thing in public and another in private", should we trust her? No. Vote Sanders!
Holman (S Williamsburg)
I hope Hillary refuses to debate this man. " I will not dignify his candidacy by standing on the same stage". This is stomach churning.
PAUL FEINER (greenburgh)
Rob Astorino, the Republican candidate for Governor against Andrew Cuomo and the Westchester County Executive should join Republicans around the nation and pledge not to support Donald Trump this November. In fact, all other Republican leaders in NYS should put country over politics and also encourage Mr. Trump to drop out. If he stays in the race they should pledge not to vote for him. Show some leadership! Donald Trump's comments are outrageous, disgusting and offensive. He's not qualified to be President . Our elected officials have to put country over partisan politics. PAUL FEINER, greenburgh, ny

Much more important topic than the destruction of Middle East governments, the spread of ISIS, the destruction of the American economy, the murder of Americans in Benghazi solely for political purposes, the destruction of evidence... Yup. Much more important.

C'mon, America! Aren't we better than this?! Evangelicals holding on to hope of a return to a generation ago...or two: It's out of your hands. The next generation isn't willing to go back...in the closet...in the alleys...and they are educated and numerous. We educated them! We wanted better for them and this is where we are. Don't let this...(my faith prevents me from saying it) person who is out of his league dictate how our country--the United States of America--is perceived and received in this changing global environment.

After all the insane and dangerous things DT said and did, especially the stuff about the use of nuclear weapons, he will go down now for talking about wanting to f... a married woman?

This country is weird...

How about calling it straight -- Trump felt it was okay to rape women.
DW (Philly)
"Republican leaders in Washington held anguished discussions throughout the evening"

These men make me sicker than Trump.
Rhinebeck (NY NY)
To any Christians still thinking of voting for Donald Trump, be reminded that you will be voting for an admitted adulterer and misogynist, who proudly and arrogantly chats about "grabbing women by the pussy" and kissing them without their consent. Your Trump who had an affair when married to Ivana Trump. Your Trump who wanted his mistress, (Marla Maples at the time) to abort their love child. Your Trump who had no issue pressing a married woman to have sex with him. Your Trump who routinely mocks and harasses women.

Christianity is shown by a believer's actions not his/her words. In all instances Trump's actions prove he is not Christian. A vote for Trump is a vote for you as a hypocrite.
Tamara (Albuquerque)
I can't help remembering that Elia Kazan classic, "A Face in the Crowd," in which an entertainer on his way to becoming President is revealed for what he is by a live mike.
bruce quinn (los angeles)
This is not just locker room banter! If you say Actress A's chest is better than Actress B, that is locker room banter. If you say you murdered someone, or some ethic group is subhuman, or you assaulted someone sexually against her will, just saying it in a locker room does not box it in a so called "locker room banter." That was a colossal attempt at horrible misdirection.
Almighty Dollar (Michigan)
He is a pig, despicable, an affront, terrible, vile, disgusting. However, I can't vote for Hillary, who grew up Republican. Because she is now a Democrat.

Enough said about the integrity of these Governors, failed candidates and Senators. They only care about their Party, the Party of No.

Any Democrat who runs against Trump at this point will likely win... too bad Hillary has a few dirt of her own the opponents could pick on... otherwise there would be no contest come Nov.

Given these latest revelations, and that more Republicans are finally coming out to denounce and distant themselves from him, it's pretty clear that it's OVER for Trump's presidential ambitions. Congratulations, Madame President Clinton!

IF there is any coming back from this for Trump, then the whole electoral process is not worth my time.

That said, my God, is everything we’ve ever done available to be run through the court of public opinion? I don’t tak as much delight in this as I would because this digging around in other’s lives is beyond the pale. Not into reporters as hackers or whatever. “Ha, Gotcha” has always been a cowardly call, imo.
Kevin (Hamden, NY)
I am by NO MEANS a Trump fan. I am a Liberal Democrat who sometimes votes third-party. I support left-leaning policies nearly item for item down the line. I am an anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-homophobic believer to ththe fullest. But you show me a man who's never spoken like an complete jerk about women when he thought he was having a private conversation with another guy, and I'll show you a liar, you follow anyone around With a camera long enough and you're bound to find something stupid. Hoe about we talk about the ISSUES just for ONCE! Would that be so hard?! No wonder my generation doesn't vote. You can't spend five seconds talking about politics without the conversation descending into the abyss of stupid. I'm sick to death with this election and so are the majority of millennials. This is the most childish election in history and every side Is at fault, not just Republicans.
James Simons (Orinda CA)
I am so pleased that the NYT decided that the issues here are so important that her usual restraint was thrown out the window. There are no inviolate rules, and this tape provided ample justification for the editorial decision to quote the man directly. Lewd term for sexual intercourse would not have cut it here. JLS

I guess we now know why as soon as Roget Ailes was kicked out of Fox News for sexual harrassment he was immediately picked up by the Trump campaign. Indecency towards women is considered an asset in Trumpland.

I can't believe that in this country – the greatest in the world – the Republican Party cannot come up with something better than the likes of the sexist, lewd, conceited, blowhard Donald Trump! There is absolutely no contest between him and the experienced, prepared, even-keeled Hillary Clinton.

Wait a minute - This is the same guy who launched his campaign by labeling an entire nationality "rapists" who should be deported? How fitting that his campaign should end this way.

I just realized some of Hurricane Matthew headlines on CNN can be interchanged with Trump candidacy: "things are going to get worse" " millions without power", "the disaster no on wants to look at". What's the difference between Hurricane Matthew and Donald Trump? One blows hard and the other is a blow hard.
I am not making light of the suffering of people in the eye of the storm; I am trying to keep sane in this disaster of an election year. I am so mad! And I so admire and support Hillary Clinton; she deserves a more worthy opponent than Trump.

Sorry, Republicans. You bought Trump and you own him. He is the ultimate end-product of decades of right-wing ideological nurturing.

Remember, you are the self-proclaimed "Party of Personal Responsibility". You do not get a do-over.

Which makes Paul Ryan's comments ring as hollow as his Ayn Rand world view. Talk about a foxhole conversion.

Trump is right about one thing...the value of his "laughing stock" continues to rise...I suspect somewhere in the trillions by now

This was telegraphed, wasn't it? There's surely no surprise here except that he didn't use any racial slurs as well. And it won't make a whit of difference to his fan base: the American voter.
Mboisclair (Madison New Jersey)
Kelly Ayotte says tonight: "“His comments are totally inappropriate and offensive.” Dear Ms. Ayotte, why would anyone with half a brain, no less half a spine, grant that you suddenly woke up to the fact that Donald Trump was speaking about all women, including you, with all of his vulgar comments during his entire campaign? How does your lame, late-to-the-party statement tonight make you in any way worthy of one single New Hampshire vote to re-elect you?

What are the female heads of state in the world to make of Donald Trump's remarks on this tape? Theresa May of the United Kingdom, Angela Merkel of Germany, the President of South Korea, the Prime Minister of Norway, the President of Chili, the Governor General of New Zealand, and many more will have to interact with the new president of the US. Can any woman imagine shaking the hand of a man who brags about groping the privates of other women?

It's October, but this really isn't much of a surprise.
MARIO MARTINEZ (COLORADO)
Not that I condone such talk but let's take a look at this! I have never met a man that doesn't occasssionaly and albeit discreetly talk like this! Remember, I don't condone this but keep this in mind. All those critics of DJT and Republicans should think twice before they open their big mouths. What comes to mind is the verse in Scripture that refers to Christ addressing the Sadduccees about he who has not sinned cast the first stone! I'm a Republican but I'm not under any false illusions that those who are quick to condemn DJT remarks degrading women haven't done so themselves. You hypocrites. DJT just got caught that's the only difference! You guys are pathetic! And DJT, grow up!!!!

Let this finally put a lid on the crude discourse that has defined Trump's campaign from the onset. It should never be viewed as "the norm".

In case anyone is wondering what a sexual predator and rape culture looks like here are exhibits A and B.

HRC and team need to go after Trump now with some outdoor advertisements. Keep the emphasis on the content Trump has displayed, no colors or photos, just very basic and simple, white billboards with black letters in his words. Then place these billboards all across those swing states and by colleges, universities, and military bases.

“I like people who weren’t captured.”
Donald J. Trump

“If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say.”
Donald J. Trump

"I think I've made a lot of sacrifices.”
Donald J. Trump

“I’d like to punch him in the face.”
Donald J. Trump

“Blood coming out of her whatever.”
Donald J. Trump

“Grab her by the p***y.”
Donald J. Trump

“Some form of punishment.”
Donald J. Trump

“Part of the beauty of me is I’m very rich.”
Donald J. Trump

“I’m being audited.”
Donald J. Trump

“I have a great relationship with the blacks.”
Donald J. Trump

“I’m going to build a wall.”
Donald J. Trump

“That makes me smart.”
Donald J. Trump

“I was being sarcastic.”
Donald J. Trump

Trump has not only provided the nails but also the coffin. Lets bury this monster and his GOP minions come November.

Pence should quit in disgust -- and quick, if he has any thoughts of running in 2020.

Hillary Clinton was right: a basket of deplorables, and Donald Trump is the chief deplorable.

Whatever happened to Republican "Family Values"?
Patrician (New York)
All Republicans (Paul Ryan, McConnell, Rubio, Toomey, Portman, Ayotte...) need to be asked on camera:

What will it take for you to un-endorse/ un-support (as the case may be) Trump? Does Trump need to murder someone on camera for the Republican leadership to disavow him?

What is the Democratic Party doing? I have only recently started seeing ads linking Pat Toomey with Trump in PA (using Iran deal)...that's insane. They should be linking all the candidates to Trump in their ads. Sure, the Republican candidates will say they have their own positions separate from Trump. But, the Democrats need to find common positions and link them all to Trump in the ads and hit them hard.

The Republicans need to pay for their spineless two faced positions.

11 years old story has become as it happend yesterday! Yes, is not nice speak bad about women, but is also not nice have sex with a woman is not you wife when you are president in USA and in The white house, as Bill do. Has anybody ask Hillary if she has any problems connected to the romantic and erotic relationship her husband had to many women? Has anyone ask about Hillarys role in email deleting of more than 30.000 mail? What about Clinton Foundation where the family take care and they travel around the world and collect hundred of millions of dollar, where go all this money? Too poor country all? Cant belive it.

This is the best election money can buy! Now can we reverse Citizens United?

The Republican Party has to dump Trump. This man cannot be allowed to run this country.
Neil J (Sydney, Australia)
Disgusted but not surprised.
The fact that this is not the end of the road for the candidate reflects badly on a the Republican party and those who still support him.
