"Our civil conversation challenge for teenagers"
This article interests me because it discusses how the nytimes tries different activities each year in order for teenagers like myself to interact with such a popular news site and I love to see popular sites try to make reading interesting which is what this does. The article mentions how they have been creating a new contest each summer and how throughout the year they offer different contests that students all around the nation can enter. This is very true because my previous English teacher have always told my classes about them and about the national recognition that you will receive if one of your responses are posted on the New York Times. These days with social media and everything else going on it is very rare to find teenagers who would want to do anything else but the amount of great responses I have seen teens write and post on this site amazes me. I could say it even inspires me. Challenges like the ones that Ny times offer year round are interesting to me because every teen that does it will take it a different way which is cool to think about.

I agree that this is one of the most terrifying elections of all time. Never before have two candidates so unfit to be in office run for the presidency. Watching this campaign was like watching the untied states fall apart because the outcome if either candidate became president would not be good.

Your argument on abortion is not only incorrect medically but also fails to acknowledge the many women that have been impregnated through non-consensual sex or that simply can not afford to support a child even in utero. The majority of abortions take place within the first 8 weeks of pregnancy meaning women have the option of simply taking a pill. To say that all abortions consist of baby mutilation is flat out invalid and a bit naive. No sane woman instinctively chooses to end the life of her own child! After long trying days of consideration, in some cases abortion is the best and only option. Consider the women and yes, even children, that have been raped or molested; left broken with nothing but a fetus to remind them of what likely was the worst few minutes of their life. To say that they should punish themselves and an innocent child for another person’s wrongful actions is cruel.

This election has been passionate and not greatly handled by the United States. We have never had an election that has divided the nation quite like this one. The news media has increasingly grown in their impact to the election. Hate crimes and arguments have divided families and kindled hatred. Will there ever be an election that is much like this again?
EV CO (BC)
I can honestly say that this election is becoming way more intense the it needs to be. the thought of either one of them becoming the president is terrifying to think about they both have there own ways of making bad comments on social media or making poor decisions about what to say about everything, whether it is Trumps racist comments or Hilary's emails to the public these candidates are the last thing we need in america.
Ana Georgina+Maya (B.C)
In our opinion we think the Hillary Clinton would be a better president. Donald Trump doesn't have an experience with any political thing. In the presidential debates, Hillary Clinton always had a prepared, educated answer and Donald Trump was unprepared. Hillary Clinton has had a lot of history and experience with politics and she also served president Barack Obama's secretary of state in 2009. Donald Trump was a real state person and has had no history in politics. Not everyone may agree but it is opinions and that is our opinion.
emily and abby (canada)
I personally think Hillary would be a better president because she has the skills. If Hillary was the president then she would listen to our ideas and will make america a better place. Clinton is a responsible woman, she also has the experience therefore I believe she should be the president.
Nicholas Johannson (British Columbia)
This is probably one of the most terrifying elections in US history. Donald and Hillary are both unsuitable for presidency. Hillary has risked national security by having the confidential emails being leaked by by Wikileaks. She is also quite unhealthy. Many news reports have shown Hillary having seizures on live television. Now Trump isn't the best candidate either. He is quite racist towards a select group of people. He wants to get rid of the North American Free Trade Agreement, also known as NAFTA. This could damage the economy for Canada. Donald Trump has NO experience in politics yet he has a good chance of winning the election because he is a powerful man in general. I would honestly vote for Hillary because she has led the fight for human rights and has experience in politics.
Greg Schroeder (New Jersey)
I agree, this election is the most nightmarish election anyone could have imagined. Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton are not suited for the presidency. Hillary Clinton is a liar and the health is a major concern. In the primaries only 8% of voters voted for these candidates, the lowest in election history. I believe that people who plan to vote for Trump or Clinton are not voting for that candidate, but against the other. Hillary Clinton is a liar and has very serious health problems. On the other hand, Donald Trump’s racism is exaggerated. His plans for “deporting every immigrant” is made up. Trump ways that he will remove all illegal immigrants, not every single innocent one. Overall, I think that Donald Trump is better suited for the presidency.
Ellie (Maryland)
I agree but I do think Trump does a better job of showing a plan for this country but his methods seem unethical and debatable to Americas policies. Our country is made of immigrants and trump often years people from them. Hillary respects immigrants and the idea of them more so than trump so I believe she is the better Leader for this country
Hunter Fountain (NC)
i can see where your coming from, all though both people are qualified of being president but honestly, they dont make the choices the choices suggested have to go thru to many people for them to be allowed. so neater of them could build a wall.

and also our country has advanced so much between our first African american president to maybe even our first female president .

I think that hillary would be a much better candidate than trump, though this is one of the ugliest elections I have ever seen. I like her more than trump, because she is more friendly to the LGBT and/or gay community. Trump has made many offensive comments about muslims and the LGBT and/or gay community. Hillary isn't perfect either, but I think Donald Trump is much worse.

Medical marijuana has many proven that it has beneficially affects in the medicinal world of drugs. There have been studies proving that marijuana can be used as an effective pain reliever, and it doesn’t have the bad side effects that pills and other prescription drugs have. Prescription drugs all have side effects equally, if not worse to marijuana. Many of the pills causes liver damage while taking marijuana in smaller amounts can not only benefit you and your illness, it somethings can offer more long term beneficial side effects. THC has been linking to helping target and kill cancer cells within the body. There are two different chemical compound in marijuana, THC and CBD. THC gives you the more “high” feeling such as giggly and heavy eyes. While CBD gives the patient the more medicated feeling, you feel the actual pain relief and other medical effects. Medical marijuana has many benefits to many people, and having it as a medical option only has benefits if its regulated right.

Economy
In this topic Trump’s argument is to renegotiate and/or uninstall the NAFTA deal (lowering taxes for those who are ‘rich’), while Hillary wants to higher the taxes for those who make $250,00 or more a year. I think that the best solution for our economy is Bernie Sander’s plan we should make higher tax to people that are ‘rich’ and the country will have more money to do what's needed, paired with a president that knows what to do with the new found money. I also think that we need to figure out what we’re doing with our jobs and do it.
Shelby S. (California)
I am a strong believer that women have the right to make decisions for their own body. Trump states that women need to be “punished” if they choose to have an abortion, and I disagree because I think that is a little extreme. There are plenty of circumstances when women are in bad place in their life, they’re not financially stable, or they aren’t fit to be parents, and they truly believe they can not have a child. No woman should ever be forced to do something they don’t want to do, and banning abortion would be doing just that. Women wouldn’t have a option to do anything but have a child, even if they didn’t want to, and that’s not right. Our entire country is based off of freedom. How is forcing someone to have a child respecting their rights as a U.S. citizen? I’m not saying that all women who get pregnant should get abortions, all I am saying is that women can have a choice to do what they want, and no one can make that choice for them. Every situation is different, and there shouldn’t be anyone who judges others based on what they want to do for their life and their own body. What are you going to do? Put women in jail if they choose to have an abortion? In my opinion, that’s ridiculous. Trump focuses on banning abortion and punishing women, but never addresses the rights women have and should continue to always have. No one, especially Trump, can tell women what they can and cannot do with their body. Women are entitled to making their own decisions.

Climate change is a heavily debated topic that has been going on since the nineteen hundred's and still continues to this day. Many people have seen this as either a myth or fact. Some people find that climate change isn't a real thing and shouldn't be a serious issue like Rick Santorum, Micheal Crichton, and Donald Trump. These people have made such comments like calling the climate change a "hoax" or something created by the Chinese government. If these people need proof that climate change is real, then why don't they go visit our dwindling glaciers or take it from a whole organization of scientist called American Association for the Advancement of Science or A.A.A.S. In my personal belief I agree with Leslie Lucas's statement that climate change is a real issue that needs to be addressed all over the world, but I don't agree with Leslie support in the since that it only focused on one person; Donald Trump. I feel that Leslie could have added more people to reference to create a stronger more concrete statement, such as any of the other people I have listed in my examples. If we cannot show some people the reality of climate change, then we will have to fix the problem of the world with our own combined efforts and letting the ignorant sit in the corner complaining that we our fools for trying to fix a "myth."
Anne Marie Cuff (Kensington Maryland)
I believe that if a gun is a part of your job or you have passed a legal back ground check, which should be done with every purchase, then you can own a gun. But the guns you carry as a private citizen shouldn't be weapons capable of mass destruction or for those used in combat. No person should have the ability to have a gun that powerful, especially if they have a criminal record or some sort of mental disorder. It shouldn't be so easy! In our country, it doesn't make sense that terrorists can easily buy a gun legally, but they can't get on an airplane here in America. If we have so many guns to "protect ourselves," that we lead other countries in the total number of guns in the US, then shouldn't this be the safest country in the world? Unfortunately we are not!
Jack H (NJ)
I feel that the 2016 presidential election is a joke. The two candidates both have no idea what they are doing. Donald trump believes that global warming, and that gases are not destroying our planet. Hillary Clinton all she does is lie. She made a private email account, and had so much classified information. Also she was proven innocent because there was not enough concrete evidence. I would not feel safe if Donald Trump were running this country. He would start so many wars, and cause so much trouble it would be outrageous. Also the last Clinton that was President left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. So I do not think it would be a great idea to let Hillary become president.

I picked Donald Trump because he is a very honest guy. He also has great thoughts and ideas. At least he speaks the truth. Unlike Hillary Clinton. He shares his thoughts, but if he were President I think we could work around those ideas that he has. If we do not protect our environment then what do we have left. But Hillary is terrible she is a liar, and never tells the truth. Which is bad if you are going to be President to hide things from your country.
John M (New Jersey)
I agree that guns capable of mass destruction should be kept away from citizens, but if we ban those kinds of guns then that will likely create a black market for those kinds of weapons, therefore allowing criminals and terrorists to obtain them, while the average citizen is left without them. It makes sense that we should ban guns like assault rifles and more weapons that are made to kill multiple people, but we need to think of the reality of the situation if we actually do so.
Annalee T (New Jersey)
I completely agree with you. Both of the candidates have no clue what they are doing. For example, almost everything that comes out of Hillary's mouth is a lie and Trump says everything that comes into his mind without thinking first. They are both acting childish and immature about this whole election and it isn't write to U.S citizens because they are torn about who to vote for. If i were to choose someone to vote for I would defiantly lean more towards Trump. I don't trust Hillary at all ever since the whole email situation, she caused people to die because of her poor decisons and she shouldnt be allowed to be our countrys leader. Also I think Trump is truthful about everything he says, yes he can be rude but atleast he is truthful about everything he says. Further more, I think that if Hillary was our president she wouldn't tell anyone about the things she does and that freaks me out because we wouldn't know whats going on. If Trump were to be president we would be in a much safer and friendlier enviornment. Lastly, Trump has clearer ideas for our country and explains more about the type of things he wants to do for our country. In conclusion Trump is the way to go.
kevin m (annandale nj)
I agree. I feel like this Election is a joke too. On one hand you have a very smart businessman who can help us get a smaller debt, who unfortunately says bad things about woman so he is losing his votes. On the other side of things you have a criminal who sent 33 thousand emails from her personal account which anyone can hack into and then lied about it. The reason it is a joke is because no one can make up their mind and when they do they think Clinton because for the past while our president had been democratic. Even though Hilary has done those terrible things some girls just say she doesn't say those things about women and she is a woman so what could go wrong, a woman president possible? What some people are totally forgetting is how trump is a businessman and he can do a lot for this country .

You may disagree with me and say but what he says isn't good for the children to have a good role model. At least he speaks the truth. Would you rather have a person who speaks their mind too much, or says lies to get people to like them. I would choose the person that speaks their mind too much because it is better to speak your mind too much then to speak your mind too little.
Morgan Moser (NC)
In the media there are as usual, two arguments. One being we should build a wall and the other being we should continue doing what is being done, with a stricter policy. I don’t agree with building a wall, for that would be far too expensive, and it wouldn’t be all that effective. People's concern is understandable for it is a scary thing to feel that dangerous people are going to come into your country unnoticed, putting you and your loved ones at risk, but a wall won’t fix that. The topic of immigration is a very tricky one, much like chess: There are so many different rules to the game and there are so many different strategies, but it is very difficult and it takes a long time and has to be very plotted out or everything is ruined. I don’t have a magical solution to this problem, but most likely, no one else has a magic answer the world has been waiting for, stacked up on a dusty shelf, next to the meaning of life sitting next to it.
Simraj Singh (California)
Morgan, I completely agree with what you're saying. There has to be a solution out there that allows immigrants to legally come to the US and still protect US citizens. Building a wall is NOT the answer to this as it would only increase debt and decrease illegal immigration negligibly. There would always be a way around or under the wall, and there is no point on wasting so many resources (money, people, tools, machines, material used to build the wall, etc.). Voting for Donald Trump would be a mistake and would leave the US in a deeper hole than we already are. To be clear, I am not saying that we should do nothing, I am just saying that building a wall is not an answer. Although the right answer may take awhile to formulate, it is out there somewhere.

Throughout American history, civil rights has been a topic discussed frequently, civil and political rights are set in place to protect individuals' and their freedom. It helps ensure security of citizens by defending against foul treatment. These laws guarantee one’s ability to live in a society free of discrimination. Our country was founded on the belief of freedom and equality for all people. This has been a process that includes the rights of African Americans and women. Martin Luther King, Jr, and Rosa Parks, are just two of the brave heroes that paved the way for civil rights of the African American culture. On December 1, 1955 a small act was pivotal to changing our future. A humble woman refused to relinquish her dignity and sit in the back of the bus. Our country remains persistent and determined to continue a culture that provides rights for all races. On August 18th, 1920, women gained the right to vote. This legal change significantly impacted the opportunities available for women. Being able to vote provided a voice for women which in turn gave them power to influence their future. We remember these past events with pride, people who stood up for what they believe in and changed our nation's path. While acknowledging that these changes could contradict specific belief structures, I believe that freedom is a constitutional right that shows we are all equal to those standing around us.
Lindsey W. (Asheville)
In recent events Immigration has been a passionate debate topic. Between building a wall and allowing everyone in, I search for a middle ground; two extremes trying to fight a common battle, neither plan advancing our society. As an adolescent, I’m constantly finding my own path. The recent events have allowed me to gather information and formulate opinions. I found that the solution I most agree with is a form of amnesty; a topic that has different definitions and opinions amongst all politicians. Florida Senator, Marco Rubio definines “amnesty as adjusting the legal status of undocumented immigrants so that they may stay in the country and work indefinitely.” (W. James Antle III) While acknowledging that some believe amnesty will not benefit our culture, I think that with the proper vetting plan we will be able to come closer to to a solution. Immigration also comes with a financial concern that cannot be ignored. By accepting all immigrants we face an economical burden that would potentially impact the U.S. and its financial future. I believe that we need to ensure our fiscal stability before increasing our population.
Morgan Murphy (New Jersey)
I completely agree Lindsey, the candidates have two very extreme ideas and neither one is going to help our economy. There needs to be a middle point or common ground where they can agree on a safe but still effective enforcement system along the borders. Perhaps something not quite extreme as a wall but still not as risky as letting all of the immigrants in. A good compromise is what this country needs to be successful.
Logan Blanchard (Asheville NC)
For many years, people all around the US have been discussing the issues of immigration. We have an estimated amount of 11 million undocumented immigrants, and we still have more waiting to come in. Some of the people in our country disagree with letting them in because they might be a threat to our society. I believe that what Donald Trump says about allowing American citizens to have jobs first is a bit unreasonable because some immigrants came to have better lives and jobs, so keeping them out might be a bit harsh. I do however, understand that there are illegal immigrants who enter our country without permission. There is also the risk of letting terrorist in without knowing, so I agree that we should improve security on the borders.
Jack H (NJ)
I could not agree with you more. We have so many undocumented immigrants in this country that it is getting out of control. People who enter our country without permission, and do it illegally should be sent back or be punished. The borders are definitely not secure enough if that many people are able to get in. Hillary also plans to keep the illegal immigrants, and follow up with what Obama has done. There are going to be so many illegal immigrants that are going to start to pour into this country if Hillary is elected. They will do this because they know that they will not be kicked out, and that they can and will take jobs. Also Hillary wants to build on Obamacare. Because she says that it was a success. First of all Obamacare was a disaster. It is a choice if you want healthcare. Now they make you pay for it, and if you don't pay, well you will get fined. Then it starts off fairly cheap, and then the prices skyrocket. They say that it is affordable healthcare, but is is not.
Logan Blanchard (Asheville NC)
Civil rights has been an important topic in our county’s history. It’s been shown that the number of colored people has changed from 12% in 1966 to 38% today, but even though their population has increased, the racial tensions have only rose as well. A survey last June found that 46% of white people say that race relations are good, which is less than the 66% on June 2009. It’s also said that the greatest problem that American women are facing is inequality of pay and career opportunities. I believe that Hillary Clinton’s decision about tackling problems involving bias and lack of respect might be necessary for decreasing of amount racism and identity.
Logan Blanchard (Asheville NC)
Gun control has been since the creation of the 2nd amendment, but there are some people out there who use this right in the wrong way. This topic has brought much discussion to citizens. Some say that one of the causes of this situation is that it’s too easy for anyone to get a gun. Others say that citizens need a gun to protect themselves from criminals. I believe that taking measures such as the assault weapon ban that Hillary Clinton stated is needed, but I believe that people should at least have a small gun like a pistol to at least protect themselves from criminals is necessary from citizen safety. I understand that there are bad people in the world that will shoot innocent citizens, but if the victims had a gun, they would be able to at least have some sort of defense. I believe that what Donald Trump says about enforcing the laws would keep this country safe.
Jenna S. (Asheville N.C.)
As of 2016, immigration has become a very touchy topic. Some believe we should deport all illegal immigrants, some think we should let them be, and many don’t know what to think. Personally, I believe in amnesty for people who have built a life in America, for people who have become fully functioning members of our society. I don't think it’s necessary to separate children from their “undocumented” parents. With that said, I also don’t think we should break down the border and let just anyone in. The problem we have with immigration is self inflicted, we make it so difficult for people to legally cross the border. I am currently trying to help one of my dearest friends bring her family to America, we’re estimating that it will take around one more year to complete our goal. It’s already been 3 years since we started trying. If we could just simplify our crazy system we could lower the amount of people desperately trying to cross the border, legally or not. I often like to say that no matter what we choose to do, someone will suffer, and I think that applies to this situation as well. But there are solutions to this problem that will do the most good while inflicting the least amount of damage, and it is imperative that we find the best one.
FoldedTortilla (portland)
Although i cannot vote i believe Hillary is best fit for the job for the reason of which she does possess a greater amount of political experience when compared to Donalds. Yes she has had her share of mistakes that made her a risky candidate, but i believe Hillary has not had as bad of publicity regarding different issues at the magnitude Donald has.
Ariana N (Yakima Wa)
I think Hillary Clinton would make a great president she has a lot of background history in politics. She is very intelligent and has some great ideas. Hillary believes in equality and civil rights. She wants to get the economy moving and get more job opportunities for people. I believe Clinton will do her best to heal our country and make great decisions.
William Hove (Asheville)
I completely agree with you. Donald Trump’s ideas will only benefit the wealthiest American citizens. I believe his ideas overly selfish and only put politics, rich people and himself before us U.S. citizens. When he insults immigrants, disabled people, women and our military, he sets a bad example for our young American citizens and that makes it hard for teachers to create a positive learning environment. Hillary Clinton’s ideas will benefit everyone including the lower class. She is a good role model for younger children because she doesn’t insult anyone. She also has a lot of history with politics which is why I believe she would be a great choice for President of the United States.
Ariana (Yakima,Wa)
I think Hillary would be a great president she has a lot of background history in politics. She believes in equality and civil rights. She is a very hard worker and she's very intelligent. Hillary wants the best for our country and wants to set very good goals. Clinton wants to overcome Americas tough issues and heal our country. I believe that she will stick to her word and make great decisions.
Alex D (new jersey)
I think that Hillary Clinton is not the best choice for president. I think that she is somewhat of a criminal. She has deleted and sent all the emails and has had numerous scandals surrounding her. I also do not support her politically nor do I fully support Donald Trump. I feel like if she would go behind our back as a people with those emails. if she becomes president then she might hide stuff from us and that is not a president that I want to run our country.
George (NJ)
I strongly agree with what you are saying. I also think Hillary is better suited for president, simply because of the background that she has, and the knowledge of politics she has. Donald Trump does no have any political background and does not know what he is running for.
Leslie Lucas (Wilmington)
I believe that climate change is a huge issue for not only our nation, but the rest of the world too. Donald Trump is quoted saying that climate change is a "hoax" made up by the Chinese. If we don't take these affairs more seriously and begin to take preventative measures, earths health will continue to decline. Trump not taking this topic seriously will also not help the planet at all and global warming will continue to be an ongoing issue
Morgan Moser (NC)
I strongly agree with you Lexi! We as a country, really need to step up and make sure we take care of this earth that has been so good to us through all this time. Personally, on this topic I actually don’t think that either candidate has much to help with this topic. Trump has already aid that she thinks that global warming is tn real, so that won't be much use to us, and as far as I know Hillary hasn't expressed a prominent interest in the topic of climate change, global warming, etc.
Gabrielle Carr (Asheville)

It has long been believed that men are better than woman, or that woman are just here to serve the men. Many people believe this idea is wrong, and there are few, if any people, who believe this is right. Many people justify the idea that this is wrong using feminism, but the idea of feminism is kind of starting to turn into the idea that women are better than men instead of making women and men equal. On www.voanews.com it is said that gender equality is viewed as a basic human right by the united nations. This thought is not just in the united nations it all around the world because women everywhere want to have equal pay as men, equal job opportunity as men, they want to be equal with men. In 1868, the 14th amendment allowed men and slave men to vote and be considered citizens, but this amendment did not include women because it was believed that women were incapable of independent thought. This is not true and the women proved that by convincing most of the states that they should vote by using simple facts that were possibly ignored by others. Then in 1920 women were finally allowed to vote. The 19th amendment put women one step closer to being equal with men and this was a very powerful step. We still have a long way to go before men and women are completely equal to society’s standards, but we are probably closer than we think.
Parker McKenna (Portland, Oregon)
Climate change has been an important topic in the debate and is a big problem in our world because carbon emissions are trapped in the outer layer of the atmosphere. If we continue to release this much carbon dioxide, the earth will get hotter and hotter and will eventually get to a point where you can not live because it is too hot.
Tori Tran (Beaverton OR)
Climate Change has been one of the main topics of this political debate and I think that it is a real cause in our world is caused humans because the O-Zone Layer above our atmosphere traps the Gases that WE use from car gas fuel, fires, etc.
Morgan Moser (NC)
Dear Tori Tan,
I agree with you that global warming is a real thing and is not made up. We definitely need to be much more mindful of what we are putting into our environment and how it is affecting our earth, flora and fauna. America should be working on the development of productive things like, electric cars, less polutive public transportation and other stuff.
AndrewH (P.A)
I think Trump should not build the wall, and he won't be able to build the wall in his 4 years of being President. Also he shouldn't make mexico pay for it I mean what did they ever do.
Ben (NJ)
Trump's plan to build a wall is brilliant. Stopping illegal immigrants from flooding into the U.S is very important. Trumps wall will encourage legal immigration and stop illegals. When illegal immigrants come into the U.S they are bringing crime and drugs. If immigrants want to come to our country they can do it legally. The only reason someone would come illegally is if they have something to hide. Mexico paying for the wall is also very smart. When Trump says he will make Mexico pay for the wall he does not mean that Mexico will directly give him money for the wall. He means that we will tax Mexico heavily on imports and the money we make from that will go to the wall. Mexico needs to pay for the wall because they have been beating us and stealing our jobs. Hillary Clinton’s dream of open borders is crazy. So many bad people will pour into our country. We need Trump’s wall!
Noah Fisher (NJ)
Andrew, a wall is essential if you want to stop illegals, drugs, and weaponry coming in from the south. Also, during one of Trump's press conferences in Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto (president of Mexico) agreed to the wall! When you say in your final sentence, "Also he shouldn't make mexico pay for it I mean what did they ever do," you have to take into account rapists, drug dealers, and murderers crossing that border and hurting innocent Americans. I also do know that not all Mexicans are criminals are criminals, but right when a family crosses that border, illegally, they are made criminals. There are families that wait years to come to America because they do it right, and when illegals jump the fence and get rights and a home, it is like a slap in the face to those who did it right. Did you get all that? Trump 2016.
Jack Mount (Templeton, CA)
Whether Trump builds the wall or not does not matter in the face of climate change. We as a species must come to terms to the fact that the Earth is being damaged by our own technology and we must fix this problem for the generations after us. We have the resources, we just have to put them to use. We as a planet and a species must motivate together and work hand in hand to save potentially the only life in this universe. World leaders do have a say in whether their nation will help the planet or not, but this situation needs the entire world population rallying behind each other, rather than just single nations at a time. To help start the movement, help in little bits by yourself. Ride your bike more often, try to minimize gas emissions, save water, even boycott polluting corporations if you feel compelled. You can make a difference because once your peers see you making an effort and caring for the planet, they will catch on. Lets save this planet together!
Emma E. (Portland, Oregon)
Reading about identity in politics is usually a very opinionated and largely conversed topic. I think the fact that Hillary and Trump are so opposite has a lot to do with all the controversy surrounding it. Swing voters are left more confused than ever before, and people normally liberal or conservative are left with thoughts and nominees more extreme than in past elections. It makes me consider the question, is talking about politics too much causing excess negativity? People are becoming stressed due to such differing opinions in areas that they're not used to being so discussed and controversial, but that could also be a good thing. Making people think and form an opinion can't be a bad thing. The election also seems to be regarding these topics very poorly and immaturely, so I think a mature conversation is necessary and would be beneficial to everyone involved.
Morgan Moser (NC)
Dear Emma E,
I love your perspective on how the options are polar opposites. I think that you're definitely right about politics being a negative platform. As I was watching the recent debates between Hillary and Trump, I notice that it was very hard to gather information because the candidates spent so much time insulting one another, there was so little talk based around the politics that the debates become pointless. I personally think that Hillary is the best candidate, but it can be very hard to understand what she is saying because she is so busy trying to appeal to voters that she doesn't say how she plans to it.
Annaleise Lukens (Asheville, North Carolina)
Climate change is a topic that has been a focus in the recent presidential election. There are two main opposing views being expressed. The general Republican argument is that climate change is a “hoax”, and that locking away natural gas reserves will affect the economy. This route will also put a lot of coal and oil companies out of business. On the other hand, the general Democrat opinion is that climate change is a growing and visible problem that sprouts from human emissions. This argument promotes using “cleaner”, renewable energy like wind and solar power, and cutting back on coal and oil to prevent harmful gas emissions. I personally agree with the latter opinion, and agree that climate change is a real and growing problem. There have been a lot of very destructive storms lately, like Hurricane Matthew and Superstorm Sandy that happened relatively close to each other. There is also the undeniable threat of rising sea levels and flooding that threaten a lot of coastal areas and cost our economy each time another disaster strikes. These are both indicators that something in the global climate is shifting to create these new obstacles. I think we should promote the idea of alternative energy sources to try to decrease the risk to the environment. This affects more than just the United States, the entire world is at stake, and this decision will affect us all.

Gun rights as well as gun legislation are both really important issues to me, For me this makes me feel that a major gun legislation should be put in place by our congress, but at the same, time I believe that every American has the right to bear arms. I think that it is very important that every American can own a gun if they want to, from the more left sided view too many incidents where people have been brutally killed for absolutely no reason. But again every single person if they choose to should have the right to own a weapon. I believe that our congress should implement a sort of Assault Weapons Ban like what was implemented during Bill Clinton's Presidency and also introduce a bill that would make stricter background checks and also a bill that would put and cap on how much ammunition you can buy or have in your possession.

I think that Hillary is doing kinda of a good job but Donald whats to drop a nuke on 1 person. Not knowing he could kill everyone.

Common core is an important subject because it is how we education our children. Almost every single candidate for president agree that we should get rid of the common core education system. Not everyone can learn in such a strict school setting.
Thomas Foody (Rockaway, New Jersey)
I agree, it is basically common knowledge that students thrive in diiferent settings pertaining to their specific personality. However, this also means that finding a middle ground that helps all students will be a challenge. It should be our president's job to make sure the middle ground is found.
Alexis D. (California)
To choose who we want as president, we, as a nation, would want someone who is eligible enough to solve such problems - race, gender, sexuality and identity - that our society would like to be resolved. Who gets elected has the choice to either ignore or solve such problems like these.
Those who support Senator Hillary Clinton would describe her as a democrat with an “edge”. Clinton is favored because she is considered to be the lesser of two evils, and despite her shady history, she makes the LGBQT+ community happy because of her support and encouragement of gay marriage and equal rights and behavior to gays. This is considered because statistics show that people of the gay community have been paid less in jobs, if they were lucky to even be hired for one. I am concerned with Clinton becoming president because of the sketchy deleted emails, how can we trust her?
As for Trump, he is labeled as the racial bigot who is sexist, racist, homophobic and transphobic. He has publicly said incredibly inappropriate things about women, like the most recent “locker room banter” with former politician. He has also called former beauty pageant queen “Miss Piggy”. People of color are terrified of the chance of him winning because they’re scared of being deported from the US to countries they have tried with great difficulty to leave. What I am concerned is, why would you want this bigot to run our country?
Miyu Sumimoto (CA)
The choice made on how to manipulate a gun truly depends on the person using the gun. Humans are extraordinary living things that carry feelings and emotions that can not be controlled or predicted. We commit sins or act upon benevolence depending on what we are feeling, and guns tend to be the most easily accessible weapon for citizens of America to possess for these reasons: “to protect the innocent, or to kill them.” Guns are necessary to protect the people, but forbidden for the use of murder; it really is a controversial topic. But if we “limit the gun purchases” and “expand background checks”, there may be a small light of hope in the issue of guns. As of our American history, guns have protected hundreds of innocent, but killed hundreds of innocent. It has killed the guilty, and protected the guilty. From what I think, guns are absolutely impossible to eliminate, but we may be able to decrease the number. There will always be a hero who fired a gun to kill the villain with a gun. “They [will always] bring families together and tear them apart.” If we strengthen the security on the use and buying of firearms, there will be less violence put forth by guns.
Natasha A. (California)
Race, gender, and identity interest me because of how prominent it is in our world today. After hearing and seeing forms of racism and gay people being treated unfairly, it made me think. How long are we going to continue being hateful towards people who cannot change who they are? As a society, these topics do not get discussed much unless a major event happens concerning it such as the shooting of Trayvon Martin or the L.G.B.T. community gaining the right to marriage. Hillary Clinton mentioned how there is “systemic racism and sexism that foster inequality.” Inequality is caused by racism that results in colored people being looked down upon when it comes to political and social events. Also sexism, which mainly concerns women, has caused inequality by how people say women cannot be the president or women do not need equal pay. Implicit bias is a problem for us all. We go along with “stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious way.” When the police officers are killing innocent black people, they are going along with stereotypes that all black people are dangerous and are “ghetto.” With these thoughts, it causes horrible things to happen.
Natasha A. (California)
(Part 2) People need to be able to think for themselves and not go along based on what they hear and see all the time. Donald Trump attacks Mexicans as criminals and wants a ban on muslim immigrants. He is going along with the stereotype that Mexicans are also dangerous and are “drug dealers” and all muslims are considered terrorists. Trump has opened doors that are mainstreaming hate in many ways such as Mexicans and muslims disliking him. He is now considered a racist that goes along with stereotypes and doesn’t think for himself what is wrong or right. As of the L.G.B.T community, states are now giving them the right to gay marriage. I believe overall it should not have to be a law that should be passed, it should be a right that gay people are born with. These people are ordinary people that just happen to love the same sex. It does not change who they are as a person. They can’t help that they are gay it was how they were born, not a choice. Overall, these issues are clearly still continuing on in our world today and have been addressed but not in a way that has made a change.

In recent discussions of second amendment rights, a controversial issue has been whether the government should institute stronger gun laws to prevent criminals from coming into possession of firearms. I believe American citizens should be entitled to carry a concealed weapon or own a gun without being subject to overly restricting regulations. On one hand, some argue that the only way to stop criminals from getting a gun is to make sure that the proper authorities, such as the police, are armed. However, those who blame the easy accessibility of guns as the source of the problem argue that the government needs to do background checks on those who wish to purchase a gun or make them safer by implementing new technology. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, a firm supporter of maintaining second amendment rights, voices his opinion by asserting that “A driver’s license works in every state, so it’s common sense that a concealed carry permit should work in every state. If we can do that for driving – which is a privilege, not a right – then surely we can do that for concealed carry, which is a right, not a privilege”. According to this view, Americans are protected by the second amendment right to the freedom to carry arms. Ratifying restricting laws is essentially limiting the freedom of Americans and becomes unconstitutional.
Audrey H (California)
Gun violence is a big issue currently in the U.S. because innocent people are being killed by them, however they also can protect the innocent. One way to stop bad people with guns is to protect the innocent with guns. After the shootings at Umpqua Community College many of the students felt they would be safer if they were carrying a gun. Some believe that, "mass shootings could be stopped by more 'good guys with guns'"(Healy and Turkewitz). Having people who can protect themselves and others in a dangerous situation like a mass shooting can save many lives. Equipping good people with guns is a nice idea, but this also allows the bad people to also get their hands on a gun more easily which causes the violence in the first place. Banning the sale of guns and advancing gun control might also decrease the gun violence in the U.S. While some think that increasing gun control will make a difference many strongly believe that more people should be protected with guns. Jamie Skinner is the mother of her 6-year-old son and was the girlfriend to Chris Mints who was shot and killed in the Umpqua shooting. In an interview she stated, "I like to have the ability to protect myself and my child".
Audrey H (California)
Part 2-

In a perfect world the selling of guns would be prohibited and gun violence would decrease and people wouldn't die from guns, but in reality criminals will still get a hold of guns and the good people wouldn't be able to protect themselves. I think that the idea of gun control and gun banishment are great I just don't think it would be fully effective in stopping shootings which makes this topic so controversial. Many people when discussing this issue think that getting rid of guns is the perfect solution and will stop people from shooting others. I believe that banning guns will not stop shootings because criminals will always find a way to get a gun or weapon. Background checking people who are trying to purchase a gun is so important though and I think it could decrease the violence if it was implemented more strictly. This way only people who will protect will be allowed guns. There really is no perfect solution to this problem, but there are many great ideas that might make gun violence less of a problem.
Reagan D (nj)
I agree with you I think gun violence is a big issue. And that back round checks may stop some crime. There will always be someone dangerous who will take a gun and use it for bad. But we have to give people the right to protect themselves and also feed their families by hunting. Therefore I think putting more laws on guns will create more problems.
Tyson (vermont)
Something that I do not agree with is the amount of jail time someone has to do for certain crimes. I believe America should in some ways be more like ancient rome. Because of the theme "an eye for an eye" I believe this because say someone goes into a mans house and kills him and his whole family.. Say he only goes to jail for 10 years.. I do not believe that is enough. The reason is because that man that he killed and his family do not just come back to life in that 10 years, they will always be dead, because of that killer. I believe that if someone kills a man and his family, he should be put to death by the same way that he killed.
Rhey L. (Colorado)
If we started doing that we would eventually lose our humanity. Some places still have the death penalty, but if a man or woman is convicted of first degree murder without also being insane, they are in prison for life and without the probability of parole. There are stronger the crime, the stronger the punishment.
Dallas (DE)
The issue of guns interests me because I grew up with the knowledge of them. My opinion is that laws restricting guns will do nothing but cause more harm. If someone with bad intentions wants a gun, they will find a way to acquire one despite restrictions. The people being most effected would be the ones following the law and if a time comes for defense, the attacker will have the upper hand and then where do you stand on the matter? As the article quoted, “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” This I firmly believe to be true. You cannot control ones harmful actions but you can protect yourself from them. If guns are restricted because they can be used for killing, are other weapons such as knifes going to be restricted too? Yes, Guns are an immensely powerful weapon but many other objects can be as well if directed in that way. I argue that there is not one set solution for the killings that occur with guns because of the different reasons behind shootings but the best way to handle the issue is by keeping people informed. An alternative to gun restrictions would be to make safety classes mandatory and to keep the weapons locked up safely. If a family would like to hold guns in the house, all members of the household should be aware of the use. The adults being responsible for them staying out of reach from children. Like stated prior to my proposal, this will not solve all of the problems but I believe its a good start.
Michele Carlucci (Delaware)
The difference in supporting demographics between the two candidates is significant. As a democrat, Hilary Clinton attracts the more open and diverse demographics while Trump, as a republican, attracts the more conservative demographics. This makes politics a rigged program. Whilst there are quiet a large number of conservatives the numbers are beginning to lessen as social differences have become a greater trend in society. More and more we see people with different genders, different identities, and different races which is creating a shift. According to statistics provided by gallup.com, Clinton has percentages in all demographics except those who are married, highly religious, Male, Non-Hispanic White, Mormon, Veteran household, White non-college grad, and White male. All of which are areas that you would expect Trump to be leading in because those are the more conservative demographics, however there are more liberal demographics. This is why politics are rigged. In my opinion, Politic views are rigged, people see and hear what they want to see and its all based on how you are raised, not on fact.
Erica S. (DE)
I agree that people's political views are shaped by what they want to see and the values and morals they are raised with. Could you explain a little clearer what you mean when you say that politics are rigged? It is an interesting thought and I know this election has sparked controversy about whether the media coverage has been sufficient.
Dallas (DE)
I agree with Erica's comment on elaborating more as to what you mean by rigged. I believe that would help me to understand your views more in depth on politics. Personally I would argue a statement similar to yours. I think that views are formed from the background of a person. How they were raised and their culture has a major impact on where one stands on issues of politics and how to go about them.
Maxwell (McKendry)
Thursday, October 1st, 2015, what many regarded as a regular school day in Umpqua Community College was quickly changed in a mere 10 minutes. Enrolled student, Chris Harper-Mercer killed 9 fellow students including an assistant professor and injuring 10 more. Events like this are not occurring at random anymore, they are occurring frequently and have woven their way into the fabric of American life. Some say that guns are the problem, however, this was not the case in the Umpqua shooting and many other similar occurrences such as Sandy Hook. People were the problem. Therefore, there is no logical reason to abolish the Second Amendment, and it should be upheld. There is a reason that the Second Amendment has withstood the test of time despite the occurrences of many “gun” incidents in our history. That reason is that people understood mind that people’s minds motivate them to take action, not objects. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump outlines a similar standpoint in his rallies, saying that “we need to get serious about prosecuting violent criminals”. It is imperative that the United States Government understands that this is a criminal problem and not simply blame guns as the cause. It is the person that does the crime, not the gun. Banning guns would not help anyone because potential criminals would still find a way to acquire guns illegally. Instead, the United States government should gravitate towards a trend of requiring in depth
Maxwell (McKendry)
Continuing from top:
background checks to ensure that guns do not fall into the wrong hands. Mr. Trump addresses the issue that many shooters have mental problems and proposes that the government needs to “fix our broken mental health system… all the tragic mass murders that occurred… have something in common - there were red flags that were ignored”. Identifying the threat before the threat takes action would be a more justifiable method in reducing tragic shootings and not infringe upon American rights. Many move to America because it offers more rights than other nations, to take away the second amendment would be the same as taking away one of the promises that many immigrants move to America for.
Noah Fisher (NJ)
I couldn't agree more Maxwell. Your argument is supported with tough evidence and events that change a person. Everything about your argument is perfect in my opinion.
Nate Drohan (California)
The second amendment has been a huge part of our country since the constitution was created. But as the years go by, shootings and more strict rules on guns and the purchasing of them. This topic interests me with my passion to join the military and serve my country. Also, guns make up a big sport in the United States. Most people resent guns. In fact, 46% of people favor the law to ban assault and semi auto rifles in the US. Most of them being Democrat. I agree with tighter gun control laws and more background checks such as Criminal, No fly lists, and possible terrorism. But to completely ban guns from the US, I do not agree with. In Texas, College students and K-12 teachers, are allowed to carry concealed firearms. Guns in a schools are not good. Giving the possibility that a child can find a teacher's gun and cause injuries or death is something that needs to be take care of.
Having semi automatic rifles is something that should be taken more seriously when purchasing other guns. I think there should be more background checks on that person. In conclusion, I don't believe that guns should be banned completely. I do agree on more security and tighter background checks, but completely banning guns I am against.
Alisha Price (Maryland)
I agree. I think that guns should be only somewhat restricted. For one, I believe civilians should not be able to purchase guns designed specifically for war and harming people. There is no need for regular people to own guns like that, because if there is a big enough issue meant for those type of guns, the military should handle it themselves. They've been trained and know when it is necessary to use guns. Also, with closed transactions and the gun loophole, you never know if the guns being sold are going into the wrong hands. Background checks should be a requirement. People should still have the right to defend themselves, but regulations and improvements are needed. The second ammendment is very important to our nation.
Allisa Sankar (Baltimore, MD)
The standard way of thinking about immigration has it that all imigrants don't belong to this country because they weren't born in America. While Democrats believe that immigrants are a positive inclusion in our society, Republicans insist that immigrants have a denouncing effect on our government and society. The Republicans' claim that immigrants have a negative effect on America rests upon the questionable assumption that they are not here to help our economy while bettering their own lives. I agree with the democratic claim that immigrants help our country, a pont that needs emphasizing.
Kimi Cook (Maryland)
Race, gender, sexuality, and identity are some important traits to the human race; the traits that we focus most on to identify and analyze a person. The article about the debate between candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton states, "Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Trump are more sharply opposed over racial and gender issues than any two presidential opponents in decades". So why is this topic so central to the election? The article seems to think the election is so focused on identity because it would earn more humanism for the candidates, two people who are up high in social class and not as connected with low or middle class as much. I feel that maybe now, we are finally truly making stands on the matters! The New York Times articles claims, "While women think more progress has been made toward ending sexism than racism in society, there are still challenges. Women think sexual harassment is a significant issue in the workplace, and feel the greatest problem facing American women is inequality in pay and career opportunities. And on issues of gender and sexuality, the two party positions are starkly at odds, as clashes over transgender bathrooms and gay rights have shown". As people, we feel knowing a person's identity is the most important, and the candidates feel just the same, to adhere to the contraversy.
Sophia Z (California)
America should place stricter regulations on guns because public safety is at stake. Guns are weapons made to cause harm, and as a country, we are seeing a trend of mass shootings, and an increase in everyday shootings, suicides, and homicides. These tragic events have one thing in common: the shooters had easy access to guns. It is fairly easy to obtain a firearm in America today due to a lack of background checks, private sellers, and weak regulations. By increasing education about guns, having stronger background checks including the mental health status of the buyer, and placing more regulations on who can obtain a gun, it is highly probable that gun violence will decrease in America.

Many people believe that guns are a means of self defense, because the second amendment allows the right to bear arms. But in a country where freedom is our founding principle, the safety of American citizens becomes salient. In America, there are more than 30,000 deaths involving guns each year. Statistics show that 60% of these are suicides, 505 are accidents, and 11,000 are homicides. Ridding the streets of guns completely will likely be impossible, but taking steps to limit the access to guns will improve the current situation.
Jason H****** (Maryland)
This is a start that looks similar to what would be a failing plan. Firearms are not weapons made to cause harm. They are made to impose the threat of it, but the threat is real; guns are can be lethal. The problem is that we, as a nation, can’t restrict access to people who need personal protection in the form of a firearm, based on the fact that some people abuse the power. Instead, we need a more intelligent and highly functioning system of filtering that will even more disallow ownership of guns to people who are considered “dangerous”, and (the tricky part) increase the ease for legitimate users to access weapons.
Armon Ahan (New Jersey)
Immigration is an important issue to many people. But the stance of Donald J. Trump makes compelling arguments. Trump stated that “Select immigrants based on their likelihood of success in the U.S. and their ability to be financially self-sufficient” (Trump). Doing as he had stated will help ensure the success of the nation. Singling out on immigrants that will be able to support the economy and pay taxes will help to cover the debt that America owes (click link for US Debt Clock). Currently, we owe 19.6 trillion US dollars going up to more and our average gross per year is far lower than that huge debt we owe, by having more citizens in the country we could tax them like everyone else and achieve a goal to lower our nation's debt. If we continue on the route that is present in the year 2020 the clock predicts that we will owe an outstanding debt of 22.1 trillion US dollars and our average gross is only twenty trillion dollars. The smart decision is to allow immigrants but only the ones that can be “financially self-sufficient” (Trump).
Nandini Marolia (California)
After reading many of the responses posted that discussed immigration, I found that many of us have the same opinion about the steps that need to be taken to resolve problems with immigration. In addition to many other opinions already stated, I believe that immigration is becoming a crucial issue in our country that must be fixed immediately, so I agree with Trump and his aggressive approach to resolving issues with immigration. I believe that an aggressive approach must be taken to completely get control on issues with immigration. Trump outlines his ten step plan to resolve immigration and he writes, “Begin working on an impenetrable physical wall on the southern border, on day one”. Trump argues that Hispanics coming across the border is a huge issue that contributes to the multitude of problems in immigration. This proposition is at the utmost extremity, yet I still agree that an aggressive approach needs to be executed. There has to be a notable difference that does not allow immigrants to come illegally. If more laws or reforms are made, people who want to come illegally will find a loophole around those laws. I understand that people are not willing to leave their family and past in other countries, however it is unfair to allow people in illegally and gain undeserved benefits.
Nandini Marolia (California)
Continuing from my last reply about immigration, I also believe that refugees entering the US is a primary cause of issues with immigration. On the other hand, Hillary argues that refugees should be handled more humanely and Hillary for President states, “Hillary will focus resources on detaining and deporting those individuals who pose a violent threat to public safety, and ensure refugees who seek asylum in the US have a fair chance to tell their stories”. Trump believes that refugees with wrong intentions are another problem that contributes to discussion over immigration. From this perspective, one question arises in my head. How will people be able to differentiate between people with good intentions and people with bad intentions? People can lie their way around these systems and can become a national threat. Security is the most important factor that a president should be able to provide for the country. By allowing refugees to come in, the US is trusting that refugees are not a threat to public safety. Sometimes this is true and other times this does not happen and the safety of US citizens is at jeopardy. Trump’s plans are inhumane, yet will be effective in getting rid of this issue with refugees. Trump has plans for immigration that may seem outrageous, but it is important that those kinds of ideas are brought up for discussion, because they have the potential to make a change.

Climate change is important to me because I’m very interested in the sciences of the earth and the universe. The fact that we are the cause of our own destruction is just ridiculous. It is an urgent threat to our world: every day that we continue polluting our planet is another day we come closer to the sun exploding. Climate change is not a hoax like Trump says. For example, part of climate change has to do with global warming. Global warming has caused glaciers to collapse, certain animals to become extinct and oceans to rise at an extremely fast pace. Our planet has heated up 1.7 F. since 1880, a high number in this case. The rate heat is increasing in the Earth, because of human activity, is about the amount of heat that would be released by 400,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs exploding across the planet each day.

In the long run, this issue could become deadly. We have hypothesized that in the next 20 to 30 years, the rainfalls will be heavier in many parts of the world, causing the periods between rainfall to be hotter and drier. We must put a stop to this. Some ways to reduce climate change (and save money) are to switch to more effective light bulbs, turn off the lights in rooms when you are not using them, and invest in an electric/hybrid car. However, out of all the ways to reduce climate change, the most influential way would be taking fewer airplane trips. Just one or two fewer rides per year would save as much in discharge as all the different activities combined.

From even watching the debate last night and knowing the candidates it is clear that their viewpoints are very different especially when it comes to education. Donald Trumps ideas about education for youth if you think about it will only support him and the wealthy in the log run and Hillary Clinton wants to create learning spaces that bring kids together, and furthermore support the ones with disabilities. She wants students to build on life long skills of supporting others, especially when it comes to their community. Donald's stance on this topic is more selfish. And at the end of the day it doesn't fully benefit the future of young people.
campbell Moll (New York)
The second amendment holds no value in todays society, it only causes for more violence.
Vincent Del Sugnore Jr. (Pittsburgh)
Let's say you were at a public place like a city street and some with an illegal weapon comes up and starts to shooting people and you are stuck in the open about to get shot what do you do you would get shot and killed because you have no way of defending yourself and no one can defend you because they don't have a weapon to shoot back with but if you do have a concealed legal weapon you or someone else on that street could avoid more casualties by having that gun and shooting back which distracts, kills, or injuries the shooter and allows people to get away this is why I support the 2nd amendment and shows that it does hold value
Greg Schroeder (New Jersey)
In the legitimit scenario you just mentioned, the person with the illegal gun wouldn’t perform this act in a place where a lot of people would witness it. If the killer wanted to harm or kill civilians he would have to go to a public area. Public areas have a lot of security and if the second amendment was abolished then there would be no “legal” guns. Thus, if the gun was stolen or smuggled then the police would already be informed of the suspected criminal. When seen in public the criminal would be spotted by the high amount of security roaming the area. Although, if this scenario were to happen in a random Walmart then I could see the problem. But for this specific scenario, there wouldn’t be any harm. I do see your point about having no defense against any criminal. Rather than totally abolishing the amendment there could be a background check prior to selling/purchasing a firearm or a thumbprint scanner on guns or something of that nature to help reduce death by firearms.
Purgie (North Carolina)
What public areas do you live in?!?!? From what you're saying, you're making sound like there are snipers on every building and 50 police at every block! If I lived in the city and I was gonna walk to the park for example, the police wouldn't be "informed" of my gun; that's why it's called a concealed carrier. They're aren't gonna be snipers in the park trees and such.

You also said that "if the gun was stolen or smuggled then the police would already be informed of the suspected criminal". I was taken aback by this statement for a number of reasons. Firstly, there are TONS of drug deals are cartels that exist and take place every day; most of them the police don't even know about. I don't how things go down in New Jersey, but where I'm from the police don't have tracking chips and video cameras on everyone to know what they are doing constantly. The police are not God, they are not all knowing. You can find an illegal gun dealer, you can buy a gun, but chances are (if at least 'try' not to get caught) you won't get caught until after you go shoot up somewhere and they catch you.

Also, if democrats would look at the facts they would know that gun control laws don't work. Let's look at Chicago for example. They have an arsenal of gun control regulations and laws (to entertain the democrats), but they STILL have an EXTRAORDINARY amount of crime in the city.
Do you know why this is?

Because there's one thing about criminals...

THEY TEND TO NOT FOLLOW LAWS!
Drew Pape (238 East 58 Street)
I thought this article was very interesting , as I watched the debate last night. I think that Hillary Clinton wants to bring people more together on education while Donald trump only wants the rich white people to go to school to get a good education. I think that Hillary Clinton's views on her debate is to educate children on how to work together eventually and be able to give back to the community which is what school does anyways. Donald trump's education is to take and take back and to give nothing back into society.
Drew Pape (238 East 58 Street)
I thought this article was interesting as I related this to the debate. Hillary Clinton wants to educate people to bring people together. Donald Trump wants to educate people only on how to take from others and to serve the rich
Khushmi Shah (SVHS)
Education changes are a big issue in this upcoming election. Both candidates have different views on education and they are very controversial, especially their different policies on education tuition. For me, as a student, tuition is the number 1 thing that I take into consideration when it comes to picking a college. Whichever candidate that makes changes to the overly priced tution costs these days, is the one that is going to catch my attention.
George D. (California)
I will share my thoughts on immigration.

If you were to enter a country where there is no citizenship laws you are not breaking the law by entering that country. In America there are laws against this happening. I believe if you are here because you have crossed the border illegally you should be sent back to the appropriate location and country. There are many wonderful people in this country who have decided to move their family here. There is nothing wrong with that- as long as you have filed appropriate paperwork and you are a citizen. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with people being here on vacation, here to work, or moving here permanently. I do though believe you need to be here legally.

i think that the second ammendment is good. people should be able to carry guns. If you have any background of commiting a crime then you shouldnt be allowed to have guns.
Faye (Chicago)
Oh. I thought this was going to be about getting teens to have a civil conversation with parents.

I understand that you believe immigrants should get background checks, but where are we going to get the money. The money would come out of our taxes. While a lot of people are worried about terrorism, not all of the immigrants are. Some are refugees fleeing to the America's for a better life.
Cole (Pittsburgh)
Dear Maria,

I understand your concern for the trustworthiness of American immigrants. I do agree that it would be smart to be able to do background checks on every person coming into the country to find out if they are "OK" but I'm wondering about how you suppose we do that? Do you have any ideas of what our government should be looking for when investigating these people

Sincerely,
Cole D. Flowers

Hello, I am with the Montessori Elementary School of Asheville, and my class has been participating in your Civil Conversation Challange, and we were wondering why the Race and Gender forum has not been put up? Thank you for these forums, they are very enjoyable and interesting.

Hi Henry,

We're so happy to hear that! The post is coming SOON. It's the longest of the four so far, but we expect it to go up before 10 or so EST this morning. Thank you for participating!
MichiDorcely (New Jersey)
I was wondering that too

Roughly speaking, the “scientific mind” sees for every problem, one and only one solution, whereas the “artistic mind” sees for every problem, multiple solutions.

i half agree with both of the candidates. I think we should look at the peoples records and if they are OK let them stay if not the send them back and tell the country to keep an eye on them.

I think that Trump should do what he said and build a wall and go through with the mass deportation of immigrants.
Lulu (NY)
I understand where you're coming from, it's scary to think that thousands of people smuggling into our country unannounced. But you have to think about it from the immigrants perspective, they have given everything thing they own, left their whole life behind, to make a better life. Imagine you leave your home, friends, family. All by yourself, with only a little amount of money, practically no food. And you walk across the thousands of miles of desert, to enter a country which you have heard so much about, only to be deported as soon as you enter the country, back to your terrible life back in your old country. I believe we need to come up with another way to lower the number of illegal immigrants, without having to send too many back. Maybe if the countries they're coming from worked on making the country nicer, than not so many people would want to leave.
Charlie (NY)
I understand your point but building a wall wouldn't change illegal immigration as much as we think it would. First of all, a lot of illegal immigrants come to the United States on small planes that often don't have the correct license to be flown. Also, it would stop the flow of illegal immigrants coming out of the United States, so the number of illegal immigrants would just pile up and not get any smaller. If we place the wall along the United states border, it would have to cut through some villages and even a couple of homes. Finally, building a wall that long would be extremely expensive and there are some ways that would be a lot cheaper and more efficient.
Khushmi Shah (SVHS)
Building a wall is not the best idea! Building a wall is not going to get rid of any of our problems, but it is instead going to increase them. Most illegal immigrants aren't going to take this positively, and they might want to revolt because they are being forced to leave the nation. Also, blocking immigrants, means no diversity in the nation and this is not very good for the economy of a country.

i think that people should be treated equal. I do like the idea that Trump has about building the wall. I like how he is trying to keep illegal immigrants out and trying to keep this country safe. i think that if it takes building a wall to keep us safe i think it should be done. I agree with more things that Trump is for then what Hillary agrees with.
Lulu (NY)
I respectfully disagree, the Berlin wall was built for practically the same reason, and it didn't help. It only made the tension in the country greater, and was eventually torn down due to the hate of it. I believe that a wall would be a waste of our government resources, when we could be spending that money on helping children not go hungry, or strengthening our public education. I think that those topics are much more pressing than building a wall we will probably tare down in ten years.
Noname (nc)
I think that Trump should build a wall, but i also think that there should be a way for the people to check to see if any immigrants are bad people and they could only bring certain things across and could only buy certain things when they get over here.
Jenna (Asheville N.C)
I agree with you when you say there background checks are a good thing for legal immigration, and there are background checks, especially since 9/11. But I must disagree with the majority of your statement. Trump building a wall is not the best course of action, if he did start building it, money would quickly become a problem and our economy would suffer. He fails to see that this wall would destroy a large amount of jobs in international trade, and severely damage our current relationship with Mexico. Where would he find the funds for such a large project? Would he raise taxes for the lower and middle class? Or would he demand that Mexico provide the necessary resources, there are just too many flaws in his plan. If a someone legally came to America, with all the correct documents, they would become a citizen. They would be no different from you or me, and to take away a legal citizens right to buy what they want in America goes against the freedom policy we pride ourselves on.

while we do know right off the bat that no matter what anyone says all of these comments are going to be very bias to one candidate or the other. Now because of the region I live in and the way i was raised I tend to lean very Republican. Since that's out of the way lets get down to the fact of it. Hillary has yet to propose a plan that seems like she is going to be able to put into action. Although trump has continued to propose many plans and is basing all of these on the wall that he is going to build though I do like the idea of the of the wall I don't like the approach on the mass deportation. I feel like that could get very costly and pretty violent so that not be the correct solution, but he does seem to have the best approach on this topic.

I think that illegal immigration is a serious problem with our country but i don't think either candidate has the answer...
