Yes, and where is the media? Still blathering about emails--that's the lead story of Secretary Clinton's press conference with hundreds of journalists. Not jobs. Not wage theft. Not economic violence aka inequality. Not the issue threatening the globe: climate change. 2015 was another record breaker in terms of global heat, Ontario is in a drought, and two earthquakes under the Arctic Ocean released yet more methane. Siberia is punctured with holes where methane has exploded under the earth, and Greenland, due to its heavy ice melt, is also elevating and will set off more earthquakes, releasing more methane. So by all means, let's talk about emails! Clinton has pages of detailed policies dealing with these issues, but hardly a word about those policies. This election is not about Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump. It's about the needs of the people and the needs of the people to have a planet we can live on. How about focusing more on that?
Wow! How sincere of the Trumpster. I'm sure that everyone is very impressed.
He had no choice but to get himself out of the mess he made in the last couple of weeks. This will help a bit. Now he has no more time to be self- indulgent!

In a descent world... instead of being a good thing to receive a Trump's endorsement... it must be a recognition that something is wrong with you and that you are part of his circle of radicals.
Better to reject such a certificate from this cold calculating lunatic because his heart is always somewhere else.

I dunno, John, it makes me feel sick inside, you accepting that man's endorsement. I mean it. It's unacceptable. You can do better.
If you want my support, stop kicking my healthcare around! What have you done for me but berate my values? Now yours are under attack, you want my help. Nice.

Hmm.
I don't care who he endorses. I hope that Donald J. Trump loses on an epic, YUGE scale in November.
He'll have earned it.

This cat has two chances, slim and none and Slim just walked out the door.
5
I have Donald Trump fatigue.
16
Trump is not capable of "pivoting". The "way" he is now is the "way" he has always been.
5
Ryan and McCain are desperate and politically foolish. They would rather sell their souls to the devil then fight the devil. Watch your backs guys.
16
And John Kerry was accused of being a flip flopper ? Trump, the emperor of flip floppers. No competition.
18
Is there really any reason why anyone in the world should expect anything other than a "wooden" performance out of Donald Trump when he is being forced to keep to script?
Good Luck, America.
Good Luck, America.
10
Well, there's the kiss of death to those he's finally, begrudgingly endorsed. Just look at his vocabulary (Can't bring myself to listen.): "He's a good man. ... disagree on a couple of things..." How Presidential! This is the vocabulary and syntax of a ten-year-old, not a statesman, not even a would-be. Now imagine this low-brow in diplomatic negotiations. Hard to do, isn't it?
12
I think Trump himself would call his endorsement a sign of weakness.
9
Well, what to you know, Donald can read. Hand him anything more than a crib sheet supplied to him by his handlers and he has trouble sticking to the script.
Notice how even when the Trumpet is given something to read he struggles to get through it without his attention-span wandering, his propensity for ad-libing, repeating certain words like "tremendous". Something is definitely wrong upstairs in Trump's brain pan. He can't stay focused for more than a minute unless the topic is about him.
What a sad pathetic excuse for a human. And the Republicans nominated him for the presidency. Who is more nuts?

Trump is now, officially, a sellout.
9
Ryan et al are thinking too much about getting through the election and too little about what lies ahead. What's Trump going to do when/is he's president, and no longer needs Ryan?
Oh, yeah, he'd need him if he cared about accomplishing anything. But he doesn't. His positions change from day to day. All he wants is to "win".
The one place where he'll have a free hand and wreak havoc: foreign relations. He doesn't need Ryan for that, nor can Ryan stop him. If he is indeed financially beholden to the Russians, this could be, to use his language, "a disaster".
I've always said that Repubs don't think far enough down the road. But this is ridiculous.

Donald calls Hillary unhinged... when we were children, back before we knew any swear words, when insulted in such a manner, the response was, "Takes one to know one" !
6
Uh oh, I never considered what would happen if Trump's followers turned on him. Will he take a hit for supporting Ryan?
2
Can't wait for the Trump Presidency!
Imagine,
Two Press Secretaries...
One to present Trump's initial gaff statement and one to walk it back!
"Hold the Presses," at the media plants will become routine!

Is there no one we can take seriously? Do they think this is some high school popularity contest? Do these guys have any principles at all that aren't molded by politics? Oh wait. Politics and principles share only the letter P. What we need are Statesmen.
4
Having grown up in the 50's reading Hardy Boys mysteries, and watching Lassie I know that this turnabout means only one thing...they've got DT bound and gagged in a remote place. From here on in, the GOP establishment will only be issuing meticulously edited video footage and sound bytes.
3
This guy is less stable than Tony Montana. I can't wait for next years GOP post-mortem, That should be an entertaining read!
2
Okay, people, don't get cocky. Yes, Trump seems to be spiraling, but the American electorate has the attention span of a concussed guppy, and it's still three months to the election. That's a lot of news cycles.
8
Trump didn't endorse Ryan earlier simply because he gets twice the publicity. First he says he's not ready. That makes headlines. Then he's ready. That makes headlines again. He's a master.
4
Finally, we are seeing some leadership from Trump.
The only other thing he could have said is:
"I can't make America Great Again without these great Republican Congressmen and Senators; And they can't do it without me."
Even if Trump wins, and the Republicans lose the House and/or Senate, nothing will be be accomplished.

3
Would it would it be possible for anyone to sound less sincere and less truthful than this? Gosh, he could've just said I'm here pointedly reading from this piece of paper cause they convinced me I'd better but guess from my lackluster delivery whether I mean it (wink, wink). Like a bully forced to shake hands and make nice by the principal--everyone knows he's not really sorry.
13
Trump mouthed his endorsements with as much feeling and depth as saying that the root canal he just had was successful and the dentist was ok. His vocal tone never changes or his message that "we will make America great again,ok!" He loves to accentuate by repeating phrases over as though his listeners have a short attention span. "We're going to make American great again. Ok, you got that" "The Obama Clinton cabal have turned this country into a disaster, OK!"
Ok Donald, we've got it. Now sit down and be quiet and let the frightened Republican down ballot folks try to convince their constituents that they are the true Republicans.

5
Trump's endorsement is probably the last thing any Republican wants or needs, particularly those in a tight race. Getting his OK is far more likely to turn voters away, given that Trump's values run counter to most Republicans' and he's scorned the party platform and consistently mocked the GOP leadership.
Given his chameleon-like whims, most thoughtful voters already expect that whatever he says at noon will likely be contradicted by four. With that record, who knows where he'll be by November?

6
I love how RINOs make Paul Ryan, with his BA from an Ohio diploma mill, out to be some economics guru. In my honest appraisal he's phonier and duller than Trump—just better at parroting talking points.
14
And, if you ever watch his pressers, he is just as mean, nasty and lying as Trump. But, the MSM seems to think he's cute.
9
I wish Donald Trump would just quit the race already. The GOP could put up someone more qualified and give the American voters a real choice even at this late date. It would also be nice for leading members of the Republican party to just acknowledge what everyone sees anyway. That Donald Trump is just unfit to hold elected office.
5
His unfitness has been clear for 14 months.
The Rs have not been able to attack him because he tells their base, uncoded, what they have been telling them, coded, since 1964. Repudiate Trump, they repudiate their base and their own core beliefs.
No one, particularly the press, should forget that the home state legislature of their darling Paul Ryan passed the same voter ID restrictions as NC, Texas and every other R state in the country. And, those of us who read the real press know in person voter fraud is virtually non-existent.
Paul Ryan can lie all he wants. The 21st century Republican Party is all about race.

It's a little more complicated than most people are seeing. Trump gives his insults, acts like he doesn't care, and then capitulates. By reading from a piece of paper, it is clear he is being asked to do this and he can send the signal to his most ardent supporters that this is merely a practical tactic meant to appease the dumb Republican establishment. It solidifies his base and then pulls in the outliers with the most minimal impact to his core reputation. He loves changing his mind, he loves capitulating, he loves giving bones to the other sides but only after a long period of proving that he is a real bully. He believes strongly that he needs Republicans but first like any abuser he wants to wreck their self confidence and make them earn any praise he gets from them (they never will have his respect).
10
And who is believing this liar? To paraphrase the donald, "How gullible are you people?"
28
Mr. Ryan and Mr. McCain are once again being made a fool of by Donald Trump. Why they don't have the courage to disavow this man is beyond reason. They cannot truly believe he is in any way, shape or form fit to lead this country. Unfortunately they are walking in his shadow and soon will be cast in the same light as Donald Trump. The old adage... when one lies down with dogs etc comes to mind. What pathetic men they are to allow Mr. Trump to define them, what a terrible legacy.
38
Who cares? I want to see Trump's tax returns.
31
The call will only get louder as we get closer.
6
After looking at his poll numbers. They may want to get a second opinion.
5
Mike Pence is dead, he just doesn't know it yet. Didn't anybody tell him the rules with Trump? He is supposed to follow, not lead, on endorsements or any such important matters. Stay tuned for the next shoe to drop - "Mike Pence has decided to continue serving Indiana due to family issues. Another vice-presidential candidate will be announced shortly." Yeah, right, what a surprise!
13
One can only hope! That would be the final nail in the coffin. Lets pray for family issues to magically appear. But i think Pence has already sold his soul off
4
That robotic, wooden and petulant "endorsement" healed rifts? I doubt it. It was as phony and laughable as Trump himself.
30
Remember back, way back, in the beginning of this strange political season, when the GOP candidates and attendant Congressional candidates were seen basically as a silly circus? Little did we know then how dysfunctional they truly were, and are. I do not see this development as trump bowing to the GOP establishment, but as another instance of his megalomaniac sickness - he is coming to Ryan et. al as some sort of benevolent despot, in his way saying, "See, I can treat you as despicably as can be imagined, and more so, yet you will never turn from me. No, you will grovel until I deign to pat you on the head and say, 'good little boys and girls'...now follow me, walk this way to the land of Trumpie." This is the sickness incarnate of the GOP, the spineless, gutless Ryan, Ayotte and all the other pitiful actors in a political play gone terribly wrong.
19
It's almost too clear that Trump has been exposed to Red Kryptonite now for quite a while. In case you were wondering, red Kryptonite induces insanity in Superman -- those who read Superman comics when we were kids will remember this.
And speaking of Kryptonite, I am at the point where I believe Trump's endorsement will be like Green Kryptonite to the endorsee -- exposure to green kryptonite eliminates Superman's super powers and can kill him. Paul Ryan, John McCain and Kelly Ayotte should avoid Trump's green kryptonite endorsements at all costs.

8
We've seen the true Donald Trump, time and time again, acting unbelievably 'unpresidential'! Over the past several months, he has proven to be erratic, uninformed, mean-spirited - just plain unfit for the job as president. Why would anyone even begin to believe that just because he's reading from a script for a few days, that he's now the man for the job. I'm sure even for Republicans his endorsement of Ryan, McCain and Ayotte - it's just too little, too late. And, in a few days, he'll again be off script showing us all his true colors. This man is simply incapable of being the most powerful leader in the world. At this point in the campaign - no matter what you think of Hillary, personally - she is undoubtedly the most qualified candidate in the race.
25
I have heard better "speeches" from a 7year old boy being forced to apologize to his Aunt Mary for beating up on her nasty little kid.
35
A rare defensive move from presidential candidate Donald Trump.
8
Trumplethinskin read the endorsement with all the enthusiasm of a hostage reading a ransom note.
47
What does it say about Ryan, McCain, and Ayotte that they don't immediately repudiate Trump's endorsement given his misogyny, bigotry, xenophobia and lack of regard for any sense of decency? They all deserve each other.
19
I watched this charade. He read from a text, but couldn't hide the feeling that at that moment he would have rather been having a colonoscpopy
21
How does one heal the kind of rift we are talking about here? And is there really a way for Trump to heal anything? Healing implies that there is something in him that is curable or recoverable; that there is something to recuperate. Trump has nothing to recuperate or heal as he does not view himself as being wounded. He can read all the scripts he wants talking up his conspiracy theories and talking about "some people"... he is beyond repair and there will be no healing without a permanent and unsightly scar for the rest of us if he is somehow elected president.
9
Whenever an "endorsement" contains the word "but," is it really an endorsement? Especially when it must be read from a script and not from the heart?
Ryan's comment ("I wish he would be a little more disciplined.") is really just a plea for Trump to appear "a little [lot?] more disciplined." One's time would be more productively spent disciplining a rabid badger.
Sorry, Mr. Ryan, Donald is your date to this ball. Dance the night away.

17
Wow the voters finally dodged the bullet. Now it is a easy for voters to choose - don't vote Trump supporters or don't vote for anyone who Trump supports.
6
Such a hypocrite. Trump standing up there reading a prepared text was so dishonest and insincere. Ryan is winning without Trump's support and Trump's endorsement likely lost him votes.
11
This is why I feel such utter revulsion at Donald Trump: “Does N.S.A. have them? I don’t know,” Mr. Trump said. “Some people have been saying that, that the N.S.A. has them.”
Mr. Trump frequently employs the "they say" strategy to foment his scurrilous conspiracy theories, smears, and other lies, so as not to take responsibility for them himself. You can just see him throwing up his hands and denying: "I didn't say it! I'm just repeating what I hear!"
He is malevolently sly and intent on winning election by misleading Americans. That is stunning: his supporters would vote for a man who considers them stupid enough to be taken in.
News media must be ever more stringent in demanding that he furnish more evidence of the truth of his "they say" claims.

It's hard to believe that in neither this article or the commentaries of TV's talking heads, has it been underscored that Trump again voiced his famous line: "Would it be great if we got along with Russia?" And this, on the very same day that Mike Morell, in this newspaper, voiced his deepest qualms about Trump, including his belief that Putin was "stage-managing" Trump.
Not only does the Trump shout out to Russia validate the many articles that have been written on the subject, but it also exposes the lack of sensitivity of reporters and commentators.

13
It seems like a broken moral compass is a requirement for politics.
8
Trump just can't stop being stupid, or doing stupid things. But no matter how dumb he acts, his delusional disciples applaud.
Last week, Trump said he wasn't ready to endorse Ryan and McCain. His supporters applauded. They accused Ryan and McCain of being RINOs. They said both were despicable turncoats who were more concerned with their own be-hinds than backing the Loose Cannon. The heck with them, phooey.
A week has passed, and Trump changes course. This week he recited from a script. After careful consideration he is now ready to bestow his blessings on Ryan, McCain, and Ayotte for good measure. Whether these politicos want Trump's endorsement, which was given in such a halfhearted way it bordered on parody, or would rather go it alone, taking Trump's slight as another kind of endorsement, one of credibility among what's left of the sane Republican voter, is anyone's guess.
It just keeps getting worse for Donnie, Flailing about, repeating his year-old shtick, it looks as if his gullible audience is finally catching on. Trump doesn't give a hoot about being president. The job is so far over his head. He would actually have to read, something he has shown little inclination doing. He would have to focus on one thing for more than a minute. He would have to concentrate. No, Trump is not fit to be president. Getting it would be a "disaster". It would expose his impotency. His true believers think otherwise. They are hoarding supplies for the bunker.

How his followers will rationalize this after they're strong condemnation of these 'career politicians' will be intersting to see.
4
If believing that Trump's limp, disingenuous reading from a prepared text is all it takes to "heal the rift in the GOP", they are as delusional as their nominee. Honest to Ethel!
22
"I understand and embrace the wisdom of Ronald Reagan's big tent within the party. . . . Big, bit tent" Pay attention to Trump's vocabulary. It's extremely limited, and padded out with repetition. He makes a bold statement, then repeats it, sometimes three or more times. It's clear his ignorance is profound. But since his supporters' ignorance matches his, he can get away with lies cloaked in an air of certainty. He and his followers are a fairly accurate indicator of the failures of American education. There's an old saying in the law: If the law is with you, argue the law. If the facts are with you, argue the facts. If neither the law or facts are with you, talk loud. Trump talks loud. And repetitively. And "bigly". Sigh.
26
Who really cares? The republicans have sold what was left of their souls. They have made a serious event into a childish, self serving, bunch of cowards and are the shame of this country.
26
Using the word "heal" and "unity" in the same sentence with Trump is an insult to anyone with more than a 6th grade education.. . make that 4th grade.
17
Trump should endorse those Republicans like Ryan, Ayotte and McCain who endorsed and support him. And yes, saying you support the Republican presidential nominee when that nominee is Donald Trump is endorsing and supporting him.
Enough already with allowing Republicans to play their dishonest game of semantics about Trump. They either support him for the Presidency of the United States so that he can implement his ugly agenda or they do not. No more dishonestly having it both ways.

13
Trump, clearly angry over being chided by other Republicans, withholds his endorsement in a vain attempt to have Ryan and crew beg him for it. I didn't need any more reasons to vote for Hillary but I guess Trump wanted to make sure I would.
20
Where is the voice of reason in the Republican Party. I quess it's more important to win the election than to stand up for the future of our country. It's very shortsighted and dangerous.
13
This man is not mentally stable. If he was a Democrat, I wouldn't vote for him under any circumstance. I guess pure hatred for President Obama and Hillary Clinton can blind his followers whom he called "poorly educated" and said they would vote for him even if he shot someone on 5th Avenue.
14
This circus is getting very boring. Luckily, there is the Olympics to watch for a couple of weeks.
I'll come back to politics after that and see what has (or hasn't) changed.
In the meantime - have fun folks.

Another bid? On what? These "bids" for unity are a joke, because the PARTY is NOT capable of unity right now. Calling it a party is also a joke, as the term denotes a shared goal of something other then a possible, long-shot win.
The GOP is clearly a house in shambles and new curtains, or any sort of half-hearted attempts to slap on some watery paint is gonna make it a mansion. In fact, if the GOP was a real house, it would be condemned as uninhabitable, and certainly inhospitable to regular human life. The ones who cling to it are either drunk on nostalgia of the good-old-days of white male superiority, ideologues/demagogues, or just clueless to a fault.
It hasn't been a true political party for some time now. As its not done anything truly meaningful in the last four presidential terms, and its only real current legacies was a failed coup by tea-party outsiders (but boy did they leave the castle in a mess) create the most massive bureaucracy of our time (Homeland Security and its little nephews) and leave us bogged down in a region of the world we had no place ever stepping so many boots in.
Oh, and obstructing the first black President, simply for the sake of obstructing him. Thats all they got to run-on! And now they cower in the corners, squeaking out a few faint protests, because they couldn't stop a narcissistic, megalomaniac of a semi-wealthy, late-night talk show punchline of a man from running rough-shod over the whole party.
Unity is pipe-dream for the GOP.

Who would want Trump's endorsement? Who would vote for a candidate based on a Trump endorsement? Besides its negative value, and given Trump's ongoing practice, it's more than likely a lie.

The sheer silliness of Trump's endorsements exposed them for what they were, an attempt by Trump to try to appear to be normal. He didn't fool anyone.
15
So transparent. "Look, he can walk and chew gum at the same time!" Certainly credentials for president of the United States. What an incredibly low bar the Republicans -- mainly the racists and misogynists -- have set. As Trump has said, he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and still "win." If he were to walk up to John McCain or Michelle Obama or Laura Bush or Bill Clinton and shoot one of them in the face, he'd still get 40 percent of the vote. Welcome to America.
7
" ... We may disagree on a couple of things, but mostly we agree.” - from Donald Trump's verbatim endorsement of Paul Ryan.
How exactly is that "expanding the GOP's big tent?"
The inherent contradiction makes it clear that the endorsement and its explanation are propaganda. Columnist Corasaniti and his editors are fooled into placing the propaganda in the headline.

Donald Trump is very good at one thing - keeping himself on the front page on a daily basis. To me, this McCain/Ryan endorsement dust-up was just an example of a typical Trump tactic. He's turned a what would normally be a boring, ho-hum event into front page news. I mean, what's a more non-event than a presidential candidate endorsing the campaigns of two major senators from his own party? When was the last time that was front page news?
Sadly, I think he's not nearly as dumb as I would like to believe he is. He controls the conversation, just by the fact that the "conversation" ends up being between him and the media rather than him and Hillary Clinton. Just like the primary candidates, she sinks under the flood of Trump sewage. He's said it himself - issues? positions? plans? That's old school, and everyone hates school anyway. He's putting on a show.

Does It really matter. He's endorsed every Trump product and they've all failed. Here's to a continuation.
11
What did Ryan do to deserve this? Granted he's the tight-fisted, some would say cruel GOP budget maker. The personhood guy who wants to make abortion murder and women and their doctors punished for it with prison. The eloquent orator who divided us up into makers and takers. And he looks a lot like Dracula, my apologies to the Count.
But Trump's endorsement? Even Ryan shouldn't have to be slimed with that.

Ryan is a reptile and deserves Donald Trump

Too bad for McCain, for Ryan. They had to use a pry bar to get the endorsements from Trump. His support is worthless, and possibly damaging.
Before this year is over, anyone who opposed Trump will be viewed as someone who fought for the Resistance and his supporters will be seen as collaborators who helped ruin the Republican party.

It is patently obvious that Trump's delay was a tit-for-tat message to Ryan and his ilk--he even used the same words "I am not quite there yet". This whole story is a mountain made of a molehill. Trump sends his messages for all the public to see without the need for intermediary & "interpretive" pundits & columnists to explain it. Professional politicians do it covertly. It has no bearing on how he will govern, except that some elements may be more obvious & clear-cut & do not need a 1000 pundits to interpret them & make a hash out of it. Perhaps it is not a good thing for the employment of pundits & columnists, but otherwise it is refreshing. I think most people understand that; politicians & pundits are aghast with mock horror at the lack of sophistication. Get over it. Focus real issues. If you want to solidify the Trump appeal, just keep focusing on this trivial stuff that shows he is different & that Joe Average understands & gives him credit for. I say that without supporting him or opposing him. No ordinary citizen should care about egos within the established structure of either party nor should independents let it distract them. The leadership of one of the greatest countries to ever exist should not be based on such trivialities. On the other hand, there may be reason to be concerned with a more general lack of diplomacy on the world stage, if only the pundits could present an unbiased case one way of the other. Instead, we get mostly partisan-like talking points.

As mentioned by others, I did enjoy seeing Trump pore over the sheaf of papers he was clutching, and read from them. Laboriously.
Also good to know that this latest version still couldn't help picking on the baby and his mom, or generating a fresh conspiracy theory.
My question is: since when did we start treating a Presidential campaign as a way to get a 70-year old guy to grow up, let alone be made Presidential?
I thought they were spozed to come that way.

The carefully crafted endorsement/speech Trump delivered with utter inept buffoonery as he carefully annunciated every several words three at a time, never deviating one iota with the exception of his own ad libbing, was mind numbingly painful to hear; so much so I had to check to make sure my ears weren't bleeding. What was more disturbing is those who were in attendance were eating it up like lemmings running off a cliff.
This is the reality of partisan politics. The party faithful of both sides of the aisle are deaf to the peripheral white noise.

Paul Ryan has to tread on tip toes until his election is done. Then he is able to shoot both barrels at Trumps behavior as he should. Many Republicans have already moved on to the fact they don't want't this particular "Republican" in the White House and are putting all their efforts into Congressional primaries. It's all strategy. Trumps' "endorsement" is nothing but "they made me do it" mentality and only because his campaign is becoming an all out GOP civil war.
3
I've read some Facebook comments from the Trump true believers. All logic, all sense is generally missing. There is a strong current of vitriol and hate pulsing through the nation. People who feel like their lives are not the fairy tales they dreamed, who have been touched by crime, drugs, unemployment. People who have struggled but come up short. They all have bought into this chaotic message. So these endorsements may mean something because that population is quite large. For the rest of us, lets hope and prey that the coalition of the dystopia is indeed the fringe and not the majority.
5
Perhaps Donald Trump has finally realized who the real enemy is. That would be his own insatiable need to be in the spotlight 24/7. Of course that requires a steady stream of his now infamous off message rants. Rants that his detractors utilize as manna for Hillary.

A man says he is an immigrant and that his son died for America. He says that his family made sacrifices for America. He says that one of the persons seeking the office of the President has made no sacrifice equal to that yet wants to stop immigration based on religion. He says that person does not know the meaning of the Constitution. His wife stands silently by.
The person running for office says he made many sacrifices: he works hard and creates jobs. He denigrates the immigrant and tries to diminish the wife and the husband saying that the wife was not allowed to say anything and the speech was written by politicians.
The immigrant says his wife said nothing because she was afraid that her emotions might take over.
The person later says that the son made a sacrifice which should be honored.
A Christian who claims to be a political conservative says the government and America be run under Christian religious law and that government should follow conservative principles. Christianity, Islam and Judaism (prior to personal and political distortions) are based on love of a god and all people. Christ said you can’t follow two different paths.
Conservative-Christians believe that love of a human starts at conception and ends at birth. A political conservative follows the rule of no government role to express that love demanded by Christ and Christianity. You can’t be a true Christian and a true conservative because the two are diametrically opposed.

This is so bizarre. Only one - one - of Trump's many gaffs/insults/lies would have sunk any other presidential candidate instantly. His support should have shrunk to his immediate family. How does he get away with it? His rowdy supporters don't know much about politics nor are they very good judges of character. They are venting their resentment against the world changing around them from what they imagined were "the good old days". This is biker bar mentality. If Trump were to win the Presidency and toss the Constitution aside, alienate our allies and put his unstable finger on the nuclear button, then they might find themselves asking the question, "OMG, how did we get here?"
11
Trump's reading material appears limited to the National Inquirer - conspiraracy everywhere - make up a story and maybe it's true. Do serious Republicans really want his endorsement? The Clinton story - email. No one except the media and Republicans really care about the e-mails - three marked with a C - out of 30,000. And yet we have Snowden and the NSA leaks - probably just as well she did not use government servers. No one is talking about that fiasco. And now questions about Ms. Trump and her immigration status. It is a non- campaign - blurred by the Trump soap opera.
10
The Trump campaign is very confusing to me. Why would any candidate in his right mind continue to act like a cross between Homer Simpson and Shemp Howard, if he was taking this election seriously?
Sorry, it's past the: "Oh well Trump is Trump" phase.
I'm 62 years old and have seen enough election cycles to know that they've been changing and this is the worst . It's childish, name calling antics seem more akin to a reality TV show than a presidential election.
Do both sides take us to be so ignorant and simple??

Paul Ryan sets the example of remarkably crass politics. His mealymouthed plea for civility in politics rings hollow when he himself was an active member of a group of senior GOP leaders who in 2009 met during Obama's inauguration to plot to sabotage his presidency. These senior GOP members strategized to bring congress to a standstill regardless how much it would hurt the economy by pledging to obstruct and block Obama on all legislation. This skullduggery emerged into a GOP party of "NO" where the extreme acrimony of the current absurd political theatre took root. Ryan is a shameful and shameless hypocrite.
13
I could care less about either party's unity. We shouldn't vote for the party platform or even what the candidate says, because most all politicians will not do what they say or what the party platform says, but what their master dictates once elected.
Trump said he supports and endorses Paul Ryan. For those die hard supporters saying how honest and wonderful Paul Ryan is, what Trump did made him a better candidate than Ryan. Paul Ryan has demonstrated that he also cares less about party unity or for whom the majority in the party voted.

There is one attribute of a pathological lair, which Mr. Trump exhibits in spades, that will inevitably create a firestorm of support of Secretary Clinton as we move closer to November 8th.
That attribute is an unique ability to accept actual reality. The more Mr. Trump lies the more his supporters become confused. Confusion easily converts into revulsion.
This is no "average" political candidate with the ability to "backtrack" and spin an inevitable gaff. Mr. Trump is a flat out lair with no regard for his constituents or the truth.

There is a way to stop Trump and it's perfectly constitutional: the electoral college. The founders created this institution specifically to avoid the prospect of a dangerous demagogue gaining the highest office in the land. The electors were to be sober, informed men, above politics, who would cast their votes for the best candidate despite the "passions" of the voters. We repeatedly condemn such a process as elitist and undemocratic--which it is(by our standards) and have since relegated the electoral college to the trash heap by our "winner-take all" rules. But now we have Trump . . . .
10
From Trumps standpoint: Mission Accomplished; headlines created where there were none.
From the media's standpoint: Mission Accomplished; Another wonderful windfall of ratings and revenues provided by Trump.
From Clinton's standpoint: Unexpected windfall; Post convention bump, bumped up even higher.
From the GOP Establishment standpoint: Embarresed relief; it may not be too late to recover.
From the Democratic Party: Satisfaction; nervous wondering what's next, gift horse or more "pants on fire."
From my standpoint: Disgust and fear. Disgust that the GOP primary voter's are so mean spirited and willingly ignorant to select this man; fear that the rest of America will allow him to be elected by not voting at all in disgust or voting for 3rd & 4th party candidates in total frustration.

The GOP, and their Presidential win strategy of doing nothing and criticizing everything, has given the world Donald Trump. (Obama, in fact, may be the first President in history that got absolutely nothing right in eight years.). Trump is the ultimate reflection of that negative philosophy, and Republican Party candidates are now slowly embracing their creation, as Party and power comes first. Before voting for the Republican down ticket, voters need to remember how "Trunp the Candidate " was created, and hand the creators a reason to rethink this "win at any cost" obstructionism.

Why does anyone think that a man with such unstable mood swings is a good choice for the highest elected office in the land? Nobody can rely on his temper or disposition. It would be like having a verbally abusive father as the top decision maker, with everyone else in the family having to tiptoe around and kowtow to him, or risk his unpredictable wrath.
No human being can make rational decisions on a daily basis without being able to control his or her temper. Anyone with self-awareness knows that rational thought is nearly impossible when you're walking around in an irritable, angry state of mind. Any little thing can set off a temper tantrum in his kind of unstable mind.
And then the euphoric states, where everything and everyone is "wonderful, the best, believe me!" The mood swings, the erratic behavior -- why isn't this man under psychiatric care?

Since it became clear who the nominees were going to be, I have looked eagerly forward to the presidential debates. Any relatively objective person who has followed this campaign season could easily imagine Clinton skewering Trump, and Trump losing it and counterpunching with bully and bluster. I hope Johnson and Weld make the 15% threshold that allows them a place on the stage. It would provide quite the contrast between ignorant demagoguery and intelligent, informed debate by seasoned public servants.
13
This is like trying to harness a Frankenstein creation who has gotten loose after years of being apprenticized. Everyone knows it won't work. It's time for the republicans to pull the plug, end this madness, and come up with a normal candidate. There are procedures for this. Then they will have to figure out how to deal with the crowd of Trumpeteers he incited to potential violence to those who do not support him.
11
The modern press focuses on process in a presidential campaign instead of focusing on substantive differences in public policy between the democratic and republican parties in Congress, and how the President has executed the law. Oh, they report on differences and the president but the blow-by-blow for almost a whole year is the process. Can you imagine if the press had done this to FDR or LBJ during their heydays in getting progressive legislation passed ? Nothing would have gotten done in Congress because some prima donna would have stirred up the know-nothing yahoos or the professional misleaders with a money stake in preventing the legislation. Now, day-by-day process can have an effect on the view of the electorate and can be legitimate when a fringe person like Trump captures a major party nomination and obviously is worthwhile in showing the con man up for what he is. BUT where are the front page exposes, day after day, on his history of cons ? Why wait for a news event like progress in the NY Attorney general's lawsuit against him. Why not focus, day after day, on his business failings instead of the interactions between him and other politicians that lack substance ?
16
Come on folks, wasn't Trump sincere and saw the error of his ways? Isn't he, by doing this, admitting that he was wrong and others were right? Isn't he now a loyal and consistent GOP candidate? Of course, loyalty and consistency for the GOP means betrayal of America - but that's not his problem. And, of course, Trump never ever, ever, ever forgets. Ryan, McCain and Ayotte will suffer in the end. It's time to go ahead and end their pain - vote all GOP out of office. It's a compassionate thing to do. And, Trump can have them down at Thanksgiving at his Palm Beach home. They can lick their wounds and he can have them for dinner; he isn't going to forget anything, even after he loses the election.
7
Hilarious....Trump redefines Reagan's "big tent" as being inclusive of life long republicans! Who's up for telling the genius that Reagan was letting "Mexicans" under the canvas!
20
Putting a muzzle on a mad dog doesn't cure the disease.
33
I've written to Senator McCain (my Senator) requesting that he publicly refuse Trump's endorsement. I urge those of you form Wisconsin to do the same with Paul Ryan. These smart men know that Trump is completely unqualified to be President and is a dangerous demagogue.
44
Ryan, McCain and others collapsed like a house of cards by endorsing Trump. They have put politics ahead of the country they were elected to serve. To my mind, that makes them undeserving of continuing in office.
8
Smart men? Say again? The way they have run Congress is the reason this narcissistic megalomaniac was able to hijack the GOP.
Trump could have picked the Dems when he decided to run as he has never cared about which party he flirted with in the pursuit of his own ego. The fact that he went GOP was no accident or noble calling. It was a no brainer because facts and reality have been replaced in the GOP by these people you refer to as smart. They are just the opposite and Trump knows it.

Respectfully, it's time for Senator McCain to retire. He serves party first not his citizens or our country.
4
That's a good boy Donald...now sit, roll over, speak...good boy...gimme your paw.
35
The entire affair proves Trump is undisciplined. Do we want a president with an undisciplined mind that says anything without regard to the consequences?
37
And for mortar they had slime.

Ransom for Iran prisoners? 3 more abducted since. No biggie in NYTimes world.
3
Hollywood Reagan and the rest of the GOP should never have started negotiating with terrorists like they did with Iran Contra.
The debt Obama just had to pay was actually rung up by the Hollywood actor/draft dodger Reagan.
Same as it always was.
Democrats are always forced to clean up after the republicans.

Reagan's the only one whoever paid ransom for prisoners.

Sane Americans see free Americans heading home.
That's why there's a Hillary landslide on the way.

At least for this week or let's say this weekend, the GOP is back, but we all know, and certainly Ryan and McCain must know, for how long. On Monday, well, who knows. But to the larger point, Ryan and McCain should be embarrassed with what I know they perceive as plus for their campaign. Long-term, for them and for their party, Trump will ruin whatever is left of Ryan's Power Points and McCain's integrity.
22
Others are saying it, I don't know, but you tell me.
It's over. The results are in in the betting parlors of Europe. Rarely are they wrong, and they find a bigger margin than Obama had last time. 3 to 1. This is why "brave" people are stepping up, and Trump's talking robbery.
Speaking of little coroners, the GOP's not really dead, it's really most sincerely dead.
Should have made some progress for the little people, GOP. We count.

After Palin and the Trump endorsement there is not much left to Senator McCain's integrity
3
So, he makes a mea culpa and endorses Ryan (who will win in all likelihood), McCain, who's already under siege by an opponent
who's going after him or supporting drumpf, Ayotte - doesn't matter.
None of this changes who the nominee is at heart. He has been messing with people, bullying them, and hurting them and more all his life. He makes me feel nauseous.

I'll be sending a donation to the Democratic winner of the late, late Wisconsin primary. Hope a lot of other Dems do the same thing. We've got to try to keep the werewolf out of Washington.
8
Paul Ryan never asked for Donald's endorsement. How long will it take before he has to disavow it?
29
Trump has had an "intervention." It worked. So they will need an intervention team at the White House to hand him a script every day. He will read it as he did his Ryan endorsement and sound as if he's never seen the text before. Did he look or sound enthusiastic praising John McCain?
1
I'm sure Ryan is eternally thankful for the anointment. Now he can go on and finally do something important with his life. Like making sure Trump doesn't take down the entire Republican Party in his upcoming landslide defeat.
11
I don't care about that stupid party. They have shown themselves to be completely useless. They want The Donald to acy sane till November. What about after that? You can't that maniac the presidency and he will go Hog wild.
3
"healing a party rift" - could it be that maybe someone just went back on meds for a day? What healing? what rift? -that is not just a chasm of personality disorder?
14
The polls for Trump will plummet next week. His angry, racist, xenophobic, uneducated followers will be with him though the end. Of this I am sure.
The rest of us? Not so much.
The rest of us? Not so much.
28
If he got 10% of the vote it would be way too much.
5
Donald wouldn't stop being Donald even if he could.
He has come this far by being this Donald.
It is the Donald we have seen to date that has brought him to the head of the Republican ticket.
If he should suddenly become "presidential" he would lose many of his current followers but would not make up the loss among the voters who have decided against him because of his behavior to date.
He cannot be presidential because he is not presidential.
He is on that same tractor trailer truck Harry Chapin sang about carrying 30,000 pounds of bananas careening down the steep grade into Scranton Pennsylvania.
His only hope is that his ride turns out better than it did for the driver of Harry's song.
Donald actually has no choice but to keep being Donald and hope that something terrible happens that crashes Hillary first.

“He (Paul Ryan) said he had not “changed anything” with regard to his support of Mr. Trump, but added: “I wish he would be a little more disciplined.”
Ryan, reputedly the most powerful office holding Republican in Washington, was certainly a standout with this strident comment on loose-cannon Trump’s ridiculous and nationally embarrassing antics.
I so glad Ryan has the courage to speak out so directly to censure the Donald as he wields his immense wrecking ball again and again and again.
I don’t like the GOP much anyway, far too much of a love affair with the fat cats, but to see the party turned into a national disgrace for the sake of political expediency is nothing short of pathetic and disconcerting.

19
How is Trump's conduct over the Ryan endorsement seen as anything more than schoolyard tit-for-tat? He even used the same verbiage as Ryan's early non-endorsement of Trump about "not being there yet." There is no healing here, or attempt at it. For Trump, everything is personal: "You made me wait; now you will wait." No surprises, not subtlety, and, certainly, no larger grasp of issues, or the world, for that matter.
144
Trump reuses all of his enemies' words. Hillary called him "unhinged" so he called Hillary "unhinged". Someone said Trump was "not qualified" to be President so he said Hillary was "not qualified" to be President showing a shocking lack of creativity in his speech as well as an "eye for and eye" moral system which won't be helpful in international politics.

Childish behavior is normal at 4 but for a president?

Trump just caved to the republican establishment. What uninspiring endorsements. He folded like a $2 suite case under the jackboots of Ryan and McConnell. Hey Trump supporters, how do you like your "he tells like it is" candidate now?
I suspect Ryan will recommend Trump read the book “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand, Ryan's inspiration for getting into politics so he could give huge tax cuts to the 1%, and then stick it to the middle class, poor, and seniors to make up for any revenue shortfall.

Trump's body language said so much as he read the statement from a piece of paper. He was miserable, annoyed, practically jumping out of his skin as he said words he did not mean. He was forced to read that statement.
He reminded me of a middle school boy standing in front of the class apologizing for writing dirty words on the bathroom walls. He isn't really sorry, but he got caught. He no doubt will do something bad again as soon as the teacher turns her back.

The Yam Who Would Be King caved on this one because disloyalty to the party had cost him more support than all of the ignorant, racist, misogynist, pro-Russian nonsense he's ever cooked up. Winning in November is the only thing that the GOP values. He finally touched a nerve with the management, and they let him know.

On a recent episode of "This American Life," billionaire Republican donor Doug Deason of Texas struggled to determine which presidential candidate to support. They settled on Ted Cruz.
But as the primary season slithered on, he realized that their millions were going to have to go to Donald J. Trump, or nobody. But as an acolyte of Charles Koch — who won't endorse Trump — he (and his father) despised the presumptive nominee.
So the pair "took a meeting" with Trump, and Doug Deason brought a list of serious policy questions to ask. In the end, he pitched not a single one at the candidate. Nonetheless, the Deasons emerged as Trump fans, based solely on the fact that he was pleasant to them. Y'know, the ol', "Would you want to have a beer with this guy?"
The younger Deason, besides demonstrating that his proclaimed Kochian "principles" were really nothing of the kind, also revealed his crass, mindless "team" approach to politics by reflexively denigrating Democrats at every opportunity (implying, for example, that D's are too stupid to eat properly).
So for all their lofty "ideals," the Deasons are really just political hacks. Ditto for Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, et al, who don't like Trump or many of his positions yet support his candidacy — and now Trump, who flips from non-endorsement to endorsement in the space of a few days based on nothing at all.
Such us-vs.-them political expediencies are rotting this nation's political culture.

In the unlikely and horrific chance Trump actually wins, how will he be 'managed' then, what carrot will they use? The man is completely unfit to president.
I'd respect Ryan and McCain more if they denounced any Trump endorsement or support.

I wonder if Trump's endorsements will help or hurt.
11
Wow...the split faces of Trump. Know Trump must be mad a Trump for going against Trump. Amazing to watch Trump contradict Trump. Bet Trump's mind is spinning.
11
Judas would be amused.
23
How many days will it take for Trump to make another totally ridiculous statement? My guess is that it should take less than a week. Of course to his core nothing he says is ridiculous!

About half of the American voters voted for Trump. I do not believe 14 milj US voters are insane. Having read all the comments in NYtimes and the English Guardian most of them seems to think Trump is insane. In my view he has come up with his vision how to get America great again. His economic plan is very interesting and I believe in it. I have watched all his speeches. He has his faults as we all have. Think big. This man wants to have America more secured, get jobs and peace all over the world. One week of silly missteps do not change his great visions. Hillary already thinks America is fine and need no change. By killing Trump his visions of America first will go away. I think that for the American people change is needed.
9
We don't need Trump's kind of change. And by the way, "half of American voters" did *not* vote for Trump. Trump didn't even get half of Republican primary voters: many more voted for someone else (Cruz, Bush, Rubio, Kasich, etc...). Trump got the vote of about 9% of eligible voters who are expected to vote in the general election. He will get more than 9% in November, but he has a lot of ground to make up. And all of the polls have Clinton leading Trump again, many of them giving Clinton a handsome lead of 5 percentage points or more.
4
Half of the American voters? No. Not even close. Only registered republicans could vote for him in most of the primaries. Republicans are less than half of the registered voters. So far less than half of a party that is less than half of the population has voted for him. That's not a path to victory.
5
"Half" of American voters did not vote for the dumpster...there are approximately 126 million registered voters, of which 55million are Republicans, and 13.5 million voted for him, not close to half but pretty close to insane.
2
How ironic that The Donald is calling Hillary Clinton "unhinged." Through all kinds of torment that the GOP has put her through she has remained steady, calm and reasonable. Traits her rival totally lacks.
71
Mr. Sincerity.
Can't you just feel the love?
Can't you just feel the love?

If Ryan and McCain had any remaining self respect, they would reject any support from this demagogue.
51
They have none.
1
There is no reason for anyone to believe anything Trump says about anything, especially anything relevant to our Nation.
37
The more amazing thing from that rally (Hey - I was driving - it was on both FNC and CNN) was how he now takes a list of all the things that he has been accused of his whole life - poor temperament, mendacity, etc. and applies them with a new brush to his opponents. It's a 70-year-old version of " I know you are but what am I?"
32
Ryan endorsed by an agent of the Kremlin? Wow, what the Republicans have wrought up our Constitution and the Government! McCain please don't follow.
36
Ryan must have taken a page from Putin's playbook to win the support of this "unwitting agent".
17
What a paradox: McCain and Ryan wanting and accepting Trump endorsement! Trump creating fear by promoting it! Making things worse by advocating they will be "GREAT"! Professing self-love by embracing hate, etc., etc etc........ ;(
21
Trump is so completely empty. Who convinced him that these shallow endorsements held meaning?
14
If it takes a (GOP) village to teach this guy how to be a candidate, who will teach him how to be a President? The endorsements did not come from the heart, they came from a script he had to read. All the worry seems to be about him as a candidate. When will the GOP begin to worry about him as a President? As erratic and schizoid as he is, he'll be back on his normal course of behavior tomorrow. And out of control once again. Ah, the specialness of the condition known as narcissism!
Can't say that it breaks my heart to see the GOP squirming this way, however. I only can hope that we will end up with a unified Democratically controlled government in DC that can finally get something done. This divided government thing is bringing America to her knees. We are falling farther behind each year the other developed nations as pertains to quality of life. And what is life about if not the quality of life?

When praising fellow Americans, Trump needs a script. When praising himself and Putin, the words flow ever so easily and his apologists are stuck mopping up the mess. This narcissist is a dangerous fool.
33
C'mon....um, um, um....he read it (glancing sideways at it) as if it were a note from his mother to the teacher explaining why the homework for yesterday was late. What silliness.
22
Seems like he really is scared that he's losing it. Grasping for helping hands from people he has dissed for months. He's turning into a politician, the very thing he says he hates. He's realizing that to get along you got to go along. He's no different except that he's crazy as a loon.
14
A heaping helping of crow for a heaping helping of Donald. This is basically over ,as trump buckles under and hires a bunch of Wall Street types as his
economic "advisors".
A fraud of HUGE proportions.
economic "advisors".
A fraud of HUGE proportions.
15
Believe me, I can't believe people will really vote for this idiot. How he became a successful New York businessman is beyond me. Believe me.
He'll sell us out to the Chinese and Russians. All to "improve" the economy, everyone want to go back to the 90s? More likely the 1890s. Believe me
Donnie throws the Speaker of the House over the boat and then endorses him. If somehow Donnie wins in November, why should the House and Senate pass his legislative agenda? I don't see any reason why they should. Then again, Donnie probably has never read the constitution and thinks he'll be a monarch or dictator. He'll just issue decrees and executive orders.
Don't even get me started about Donnie's treatment of our military. Respect and sacrifice he doesn't know the first thing. Believe me...

Will Trump's belated endorsements of Congressman/Leader Paul Ryan, Senators John McCain and Kelly Ayotte running for their seats as he's running for the Oval Office make a whit of difference in the fractured smash-up of the "big, big [circus] tent" of the Republican Party? Nope.
6
This endorsement may now be detriment to Ryan and McCain. Ryan and McCain only allowed this situation to escalate because Trump he is so predictable reality show predictable and would embarrass himself even more.
6
Oh, who cares at this point. It is all theater.
7
Did Trump just praise Ryan"s competition Paul Nehlan in a tweet.
6
Yeah -- he'll just get back at them all later.
9
I guess the Times' reporters on the Trump campaign are on vacation after a very busy week.. Thursday night, Trump was in Maine linking Somali refugees to crime and terrorism--Trump's comments and reaction in defense of Somali community reported in Boston Globe and on Minnesota NPR, but not NYT.
12
"Senator Ayote. Great guy, really is. Doing a wonderful job up there in NH. They love me in NH, they really do. Beautiful state. I endorse him.
Paul Ryan. Great guy. really super guy. Really. Always stays in my hotels because they're the best. They really are. True story. I got more votes in Wisconsin than any other primary contender in history. True. I endorse him.
John McCain. Great patriot. Served in the Military. Did a great job. Great guy. I think I got over 70 % of the vote in Arizona, which is amazing. Never happened before. I'll tell you that right now. That's Huge. I endorse John. Great Guy."

Trump's endorsement is the kiss of death for Kelly Ayotte in NH.
18
Let's make New Hampshire BLUE again!
3
How cynical!
And as to his remarks that the NSA might have the Clinton deleted emails, there is a better chance that the NSA has the tax returns that he refuses to release. For sure, his friend Putin has them.

The Trouble is with Donald Trump's obvious forced endorsement now, is that everyone knows what he really thinks and how he actually feels as of umpteen statements until this recent one only as a result of the GOP/RNC intervention.
Trump the remedial reader, looked as if he were a hostage being forced to read a ransom note by captors.

"I know Satan and respect him immensely. Hey, he's got heat we can use in NYC in the winter time, and he has promised me that he'll accept any of my opponents without a room and board charge. Now that's being a real American. Really, folks, I know the guy and he is great."
4
Ryan is as fraudulent as Trump so this means nothing.
15
A strong leader does not incessantly tweet.
9
If Trump is elected it will be partly the mainstream media's fault.
By reporting and commenting on his every Tweet and Facebook post, the NYT dignifies his idiocy.
By reporting and commenting on his every Tweet and Facebook post, the NYT dignifies his idiocy.
11
Other than a question of form and intra-party correctness, Trump's endorsement is irrelevant, Ryan is sitting on a safe seat and it is Trump that, given his dubious candidacy, needs his endorsement...and, if president, his cooperation. But it is an unholy alliance, at best. With the robber baron committee of economic advisors that Trump has selected and with Ryan's one note program of cutting social services so that the wealthy can get a tax cut, we have much to lose by their collaboration.
9
The sad thing is that Donald Trump is not winning people on his merits, but rather on his mouth. He says the most outrageous things, makes promises he cannot keep...in short...has no idea what being president involves. He is on a grand ego trip, and has taken Americs along for the ride.
33
It didn't take long for Trump to cave in to Reince Preibus, and he thinks he can stand up to terrorist or Putin.....I think NOT!
15
"moving to heal a deepening rift within the Republican Party". This statement is only speculation, not actual reporting. Nobody really can know why Trump decided, or "was convinced" to do that. Trump is not a healer, most likely this was a GOP move.
6
Flip. Flop. Somebody took the Donald to the woodshed.
13
Does Trump have half a brain? I don’t know, some people have been saying that, it never fully developed beyond that of a twelve year old.
14
I think the debates will be a disaster for Hillary, and any lead she might have will evaporate. The election is too close to call. Ballot stuffing will give a trump the popular vote win by the smallest margin in history. If Hillary takes the electoral college, then the country will devolve into civil war. The Trump movement is more than just a candidate. It is a rebellion and secession is the platform. Trump lit a fuse, and now it's just a matter of time. The long hot summer never materialized and the pent-up pressure will explode after November 8. Hillary keeps stepping on her own deck as she tries to form the language to describe her platform. Short circuited? Really? Fire your writers, and your manager, Hillary. Short circuiting disqualifies a person from the Oval Office, okay? Idiot. Fool. Loser!!
4
You are dreaming, wake up, he is not going to win.
7
Look at that platform again. It's a reversion to the past and a surrender to Russia platform. You may be happy about the former, but what about the latter.
5
The debates will be enlightening. This time Trump won't have a cheering section. The questions will be serious and the responses will show the rest of the world what an empty suit Trump is. Hillary is prepared intellectually and temperamentally to lead the United States. Trump can't lead himself to say or do the right thing. VOTE BLUE!
6
Kiss of death?
10
'Keep attacking, and soften only if there is submission' tactics maintained the winning spree. This time there is softening but no submission.
5
Mark 3:25: If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
On November 8, 2016 that biblical exegesis -- applied to GOP/Trump --will be tested at voting booths across America.

8
Here is where we are: Trump reading a carefully worded statement, no doubt forced upon him by greater forces, endorsing 3 people who, quite clearly, he doesn't actually endorse. But he said he does, 'cause he just said it, right? It was like watching a naughty schoolboy writing out "I endorse Paul Ryan" in cursive 100 times on the class blackboard.
45
Just another example in a long list of Trump flip-flops.
14
Do they care?
3
Yes, Trump says stupid and discourteous things. But at least it's a refreshing change from the guarded and tailored made responses hatched by a coterie of campaign strategists. Elections now come down to winning a handful of states. The electoral college has been made a mockery by stratigic computer alogorithms. Let's go back to the popular vote where candidates have to appease to the "majority" of the people, not just to a handful of states.
24
I never find stupid refreshing.
22
Ah yes. Refreshing. But after you've had that refreshing cold beer on a hot summer day, you find that your thirst is not truly satisfied.
And by the way, the POTUS has never been elected by popular vote,
And by the way, the POTUS has never been elected by popular vote,
6
I certainly agree about "guarded and tailored made"....but since when is "stupid" and "discourteous" "refreshing"? Also, I think that there is no going "back" to a popular vote for president. The Electoral College is an invention of the Founding Fathers, especially the lately-famous Alexander Hamilton, to guard against the people ("a great beast") controlling presidential elections directly. We may be happy to have it this cycle.
167
Perhaps in November Ryan will regret having even gotten endorsement from this crazy Clown. Perhaps we do not even have to wait until November to see the whole Trump wagon crashing. There is no country like America but there is also no country where a dangerous and insane clown could become president. It comes down to the people to do the right thing and to certify the country as not insane, voting for the only sane candidate Hillary Clinton.
19
When we tune in to see Mr. Trump, we expect the real thing, not some squinty stiff struggling to read some folded-up piece of waste paper. Give us back the real Mr. Trump! Let us laugh again!
10
Real or unreal Trump is a disgusting disaster. The end of this travesty, slapped on the country by the Republican party, could not end soon enough.
12
@MC: It's just an hypothesis of course, but appearances suggest that, despite his childish bullying, Mr. Trump really is just a good-time charlie for whom the Archie Bunker shtick is just that.
Born one of the richest men in the country, he could have done anything he wanted with his life. So what did he do? Casinos, beauty contests, tv shows, hotels, wives.
What's serious is the violent mob that has gathered around him, and that movement will remain after Mr. Trump has gone back to reality tv. Who will pick it up politically will be someone like Paul Ryan.
Mr. Ryan, as Speaker already second in succession to the Presidency, is the dangerous one, because he's not acting: he really can't tell the real world from his fantasies. It arguably wasn't Mr. Ryan who was lowered by Mr. Trump's supposed endorsement, but rather the other way around.

Trump has shown for a year who he is and that he is completely unfit for office. As they say - even if you put lipstick on a pig it's still a pig. He is playing republicans for suckers.
9
Looks like the Trumpster had a difficult time speaking out in regards to his endorsements of Ryan and McCain. He hasn't any character and I bet the GOP is regretting ever giving him a shot at the presidency. He tries to control his message and talks like a robot when he is speaking about policy which he hasn't even talked about the issues. All he does is go after Clinton and who wants to hear a person who doesn't know foreign policy. The Trumpster is always walking back is crazy statements and doesn't even know what the Nuclear Triad is which everyone knows what it is except the Trumpster. I know I wouldn't trust him because he doesn't have the temperament and he always adores Putin. It is too bad his campaign manager supported and ran a Russian presidents election when he was in Russia which leads me to believe that the Trumpster must have private investments in Russia. Is that wy he doesn't want to show his tax returns every other candidate shows there returns of many years. WHATS wrong with his tax returns???? At least Buffet is willing to show his. The Donald where is your tax returns???
4
Frankly if I were Ryan and McCain I'm not sure I'd want Trump's endorsement. That endorsement may lose as many votes as it gains. And it means you have the "support" of an arrogant schoolyard bully without a clue. That really doesn't sound like something positive to me. Remember that a tiger can't change its stripes. This is the "nice" Trump that we see so rarely because for Trump it's not his real nature and is just an act.
5
This entire, ridiculous situation is not essentially about Trump, who is simply another opportunist with a psychological disorder. He has merely identified and exploited the fact that a significant percentage of the voting public process what they see in the news media as another form of entertainment, in which titillating events and narratives are much-appreciated distractions from the vagaries and challenges of daily life. If the entertainment can confirm your understanding of the world and shield you from sensing your existential vulnerability. so much the better. And news media outlets, struggling for market share, are happy to provide it. In comparison, critical thinking is thin gruel, science, reason and political self-governance be damned.
This is not about the person Samantha Bee described as "an oddly-tinted compilation of psychiatric symptoms"; it's about the segment of the population that is willfully-misinformed, bigoted and intellectually-addled, and whether they are going to follow their "accomplishment" of rendering our government too-often ineffective by destroying the country.

5
We need to remember that McCain is the guy who foisted Sarah Palin in to the national forefront, bringing the Republican Party to an unprecedented level of open stupidity. He totally deserves Trump's endorsement, he created the landscape.
20
Indeed. He has lost my respect. If he wins his nomination and bid for reelection, it will no doubt be his last term as a senator. Perhaps he can then stand up to the teapartiers and show us that he is again a patriot and a hero. But I have my doubts. All he is now is another bought and paid for politician.
1
Stepford Don is just as scary as Crazy Don.
8
Trump's endorsement...damning with faint praise. Can't wait for this clown show to end.
4
NEWSFLASH! Frankenstein endorses Dracula!
I think we can all breathe easier now, knowing that all is as it should be in the world.
I think we can all breathe easier now, knowing that all is as it should be in the world.

Mr. Trump would practically be one trivial, insignificant person without citizens' who support him. I think we shouldn't stop short by just criticizing Mr. Trump but to ask ourselves with open minds how come there exists such a fertile soil for his private and public support in the U.S.A.
7
It is frightening to realize that there GOP candidates out there who feel better now that they've been endorsed by DJT. If DJT endorsed me for anything – anything! – I'd drop out of the race from embarrassment.
14
Ryan played games, playing coy about endorsing Trump.
Why should Trump turn around and offer a ringing endorsement of Ryan?
For the professional politicians who have no real world skills, maintaining their cherished elected office is more important than life itself. Trump through down the gauntlet.
Try to attack him or openly not support him and you will receive the same treatment.
He played it well.

To clarify my earlier posting: I think we shouldn't stop short by just criticizing Mr. Trump but WE NEED to ask ourselves with open minds how come there exists such a fertile soil for his private and public support in the U.S.A.
10
We can only hope that the respective political parties will recognize, finally, the necessity of addressing the needs of the greater population instead of simply the plutocrats. If not, this is the predecessor to the pitchforks coming.
1
Apparently the bigwigs in the Republican party had that intervention; they wrote the script; they warned him not to deviate. OR ELSE whatever "or else" could entail.
7
NY Post's headline should be TRUMP BLINKS!
But don't worry, he'll say anything. This is not a kinder, Gentler Trump when on the same day he said Japan will be arching Sony YV, saying hard working Somalis in Maine are a drain on the state only because they are poor and black while he's seducing the poor and white W. Virginians, and appointing a star studded team of white male financiers who reward American companies for moving production off shore and firing thousands of Americans.

It seems Trump has finally hit his top speed. He's has gotten away with calling "Mexicans rapist", "banning all Muslims" and, even "building a wall"; these rhetorics led him to win the primaries. It seems this political phenomenon has come to an end. It's no longer working with the Kahn (gold star family) feud, Purple Heart dilemma, not endorsing Paul Ryan nor, "throwing out the baby" comments. This could all just be a bad week for Trump but, maybe it's an early sign for what's ahead...
8
Up here in NH, Trump's endorsement of Ayotte, who's been actively trying to pretend that he doesn't even exist all while sucking up to the most vicious racist Trump supporters, is what's called "The Kiss of Death." Though she's not a bad person and is running as an "Independent", she votes Republican/Fascist/Hate 98% of the time. She will not be re-elected.
26
His "endorsements" are all about the money. Play nice or you get none. The only person getting rich off the campaign donations is DT himself. The campaign (funded by the people) is paying for flying his planes, staying at his hotels, eating at his restaurants, etc. So, the only person who is getting rich is DT.
13
This week has been bogged down by serial blunders of Trump's own making.
What happened to “Donald Trump’s going to be doing a Hispanic engagement tour coming up soon,” said the party chairman, Reince Priebus? This was in a NYT editorial on July 21, 2016, only 16 days ago.
Is this another casualty of Trump's ADHD, impulsiveness and inability to follow through on almost anything?
If a person with these traits applied for a job at Trump's company, would Trump himself even hire such a person let alone recommend him for the Presidency of the United States?

Re. The missing E-mails Trump says...
“Does N.S.A. have them? I don’t know. Some people have been saying that, that the N.S.A. has them.”
Where are all these people Donald? Why do we never hear directly from the people who are saying things to you. You so very often use the phrase "people are saying". In fact, I have yet to see you ever listen to anyone!
On the campaign trails of others, I have seen candidates taking questions and comments from Americans. From these, ordinary Americans get the impression that the candidates are LISTENING to them, that they are open to LEARNING something new about a potential constituents point of view or situation. This is something I have never seen you do on camera Donald, despite the thousands of free media hours you have racked up. You are always talking, talking, talking.
Where are the people talking to you Donald. Are they in your head?
I am an ordinary American Donald, and I would rather take a chance and elect as our president the next American stranger that I happen to pass on the street than risk putting you in the Oval Office. At least that person will have a chance of taking advice and listening to others. You are completely disconnected from everyone and everything that is not about you and your disgusting ego.

19
Absolutely!! Good point - I have often wondered who all these "people are saying ... I don't know, but people are saying" ARE. Huh?? How about some SOURCES??? "People are saying" sounds like some schoolyard gossip being spread around by the mean kids. GROW UP, Donald, and stop spreading unfounded stuff you heard either in the schoolyard or over the wall of the bathroom stall.
5
My guess is that Trump will become even more toxic, and his endorsement will be regretted.
10
Now, if he could just take back everything else he has said in the last six months.
8
I just hope that Mitch McConnell reads this and thoroughly enjoys the bit about Ryan being the nation's most powerful elected Republican. How many terms must a Skeksis spitefully scheme to destroy all sectors of government save his own, which will do nothing but repeal the achievements of the past, before acknowledged as the Prime Obstructionist?
9
The GOP finally tamed Trump and now he is reading from the speeches written by someone else, but he is not himself. I wonder how long this honeymoon will last! I only know that when it is over, sanity will recede and old Trump shall be back stronger and deathly dangerous.
6
like often - when the NYT reports about Donald Trump the most important parts of his speeches are amiss - as he promised to endorse 'the Baby'.
And that he truly wants to find out who the Baby is AND is willing to sponsor it for a concert in New York.
And I was moved to tears when I heard this - his promise and could you please change the headline accordingly into:
Donald Trump finally sponsors Baby in Bid for for Unity!

2
It's clear that Republican operative finally got through to Donald Trump and persuaded him to endorse Paul Ryan, John McCain and Ms. Ayotte. Was it sincere? As Mr. Trump would say, "you tell me," or was it pure and simple political expediency?
5
Stupid childish games. Ryan hems and haws about endorsing Trump, but finally does. Before Trump comes to Wisconsin, Trump even says he might endorse Ryan's opponent. Ryan says he won't attend Trump's Green Bay rally. Scott Walker and Ron Johnson join the we're-not-showing-up either team along with Ryan.
Trump comes to Wisconsin and then proclaims Ryan a very nice guy and endorses Ryan.
Treating the presidential election like a child's game, yes. And the American people are who these birds are toying with.
This isn't normal politics. This is sick stuff.
What's going to happen between Trump and John McCain should Trump go to Arizona? Each proclaim the other is Mr. Nice Guy? We'll see.

Wouldn't it have been nice if both Ryan and McCain declined Trump's endorsement. Wouldn't it have been great if they both chose country over politics? I guess I will not teach my two sons those important lessons of integrity, morals, values and beliefs.
9
And I imagine you are voting for Hillary who likewise has no integrity, morals, values or beliefs except in herself.
1
Nonsense !! All Trump has done since he floated to the top of this sewage heap has been to sew discord and blow holes in GOP doctrine, dogma, and philosophy. So now he realizes his killing everything in sight and he will suddenly go along with the party elders ? Pure rubbish...believe that and I'll sell you a fine bridge in NYC.

If the racist, misogynist, LGBT hating, racist gerrymandering, and voter suppressing Republican Party can't get together with the racist, misogynist, nativist, fascist Donald Trump who CAN they get together with? It is a marriage that was meant to be. The only difference is that the GOP tries to keep it hush hush whereas Donald lets his hate shine.
10
Trump has a day of reading from a script and not saying anything blatantly false or stupid. Will we now be subjected to "pundits" and his mainstream-GOP supporters saying he has pivoted and is now respectable?
Let me know when he retracts his racist and mysoginist statements, his birther lies, his threats to use nuclear weapons, changes to liable laws, statements supporting violence against protestors and any number of other of his lunatic and semi-fascist statements. Then talk about pivots and respectability.

At this late date, Trump’s endorsements of Ryan, McCain and Ayotte are too little too late. More importantly, I have not heard any apologies to the Khan family.
Trump’s five day tirade against the Muslim Gold Star Family, the Khan’s, was real world test of his Presidential capabilities. Trump failed this test in a most incompetent manner. It took a week of immense pressure from Trump’s advisers, soaring public rebuke from Republicans and Veterans Groups to get Trump to stop attacking the Khans. Trump has demonstrated to all the American voters that Trump is too impulsive, immature and narcissistic to handle the tremendous responsibilities of the Oval Office.
To all Trump supporters, remember this: Once a "President" Trump starts a Nuclear War because he perceives a personal slight from a foreign foe, there is no Do Over.

This candidate dares to suggest that Mrs. Clinton might be "close to unhinged"? That comment from that individual creates a boatload of cognitive dissonance that leads me to conclude that possibly the saddest and scariest thing about this candidate's state of mind is that he really does not realize that he is crazy!
Mike Pence may be walking into a future filled with opportunities simply by tolerating his fellow-candidate and figuring out how to co-exist and cooperate with him. Surely it's great training for negotiating with foreign dictators. Mike Pence for Secy of State!

Most crazy people don't know they are crazy.
7
Have you ever noticed that whenever someone (especially Clinton) says anything bad about him, he IMMEDIATELY uses THEIR/HER exact same words against her???? Whatever new criticism comes out by ANYONE in that day's news, Trump will turn around and use the exact same phrases the very next day!! WOW.... OK all you psychologists out there... What do you call THIS tactic??? Projection? Mirroring?? Juvenile blurtings of "I know you are but what am I????" This guy is just too insane !
4
By endorsing the established insiders Ryan, McCain and Ayotte, Trump is betraying his hardcore audience who wanted someone who could "shake things up" and "can't be bought." Trump just got bought.
9
The Kiss of Death.... stupidity may be contagious.
7
Another reason the GOP has lost all my respect. After all this back and forth these people should thank Trump but say no thanks. If you endorse a person with no soul yours is gone too.
7
This endorsement should be immediately be run as an attack ad against Kelly Ayotte and John McCain
10
DJT looked like a child reading his "notes," and at times looked like he disagreed with them, having to go off script here and there. I would love to see e-mails between RNC/Manafort/Jeff Lord- would make for interesting intervention details. He clearly didn't want to endorse.
5
A man who can barely explain the meaning of the word integrity supposedly gives support to men who have chosen to sell their integrity for that endorsement, deserve each other.
What America deserves is far more.
What America deserves is far more.
12
I can actually understand why even Donald Trump would hold his nose while endorsing the smarmy, compassionless ideologue Ryan. How "Lyin' Ryan" has ever been perceived as the acceptable face of the GOP is beyond me.
8
Some endorsement! It sounded more like a stream of consciousness riff mixed in with a poorly read prepared statement.
7
Donny boy is clown. But it only proves that a clown can become the President of the United States. Our country has gone crazy. It's like waking up from a bad dream only to find out it is true. We are in the Twilight Zone
14
It is astonishing, if you think about it, that an entire country (maybe the world?) is held in thrall to the unpredictable rants of a man who may well be mentally ill simply because he managed to bully and insult his way to bend the GOP to his will. If it weren't so interesting to see the Republican Party melt down in public, I would wish we could simply get to November 8 and put the bad nightmare of Donald Trump and the entire Republican nightmare behind us. What he says is irrelevant in the long run; it's just unfortunate we have to be subjected moment-by-moment to the man's irrational, unhinged expostulations.
2
"She is pretty close to unhinged."
Interesting choice of words for a man who embodies "completely unhinged" almost every day.

5
This guy is a joke.
5
It is beyond me how anyone paying any attention at all to this farce of a campaign can take these endorsements seriously. The manipulative, hypocritical nature of politics is on full display in the Republicans' desperate attempts to get Trump to "act" presidential.
Again: how can any one think that these "endorsements" have meaning?
And yet many do, including the media. This is perhaps the saddest aspect of the 2016 race for the White House. We're all playing a transparent, wasteful and self-destructive game.

1
I fully agree. I do really not understand how anybody of these GOP supporters or commentators can come out and sell us Donny T as temporarily insane, having come off the track, and if he can show off more presidential everything will be alright. I heard Hew Hewitt, whose craziness trumps only that of trump who things that Trump is "still better" than Hillary. No he is not and it cannot be clothed into a mantle of looking presidential. If he would be elected, we would have the first insane president sitting in the White House playing Twitter. What it shows is also a GOP which with every day they are still supporting this maniac is becoming dangerous unpredictable, saying anything to maintain their seats. What the GOP elected forget is that the country is watching and we will vote for people with sound mind and ability to make the right decisions. Hanging in with Trump is neither of it.
3
I cannot imagine being so morally bankrupt that I would seek the endorsement of Donald Trump.
9
Sort of reminds me of Wile E. Coyote endorsing the Roadrunner. But I would trust Wile E. more than the
Donald. Wouldn't you?
Donald. Wouldn't you?
7
What a joke this man is turning your great country into. A sad joke.
His stupidity has no limits now. What limits do you think it'll have if he becomes your next president?

3
What will he do next, my youngest son asked, "Drown a kitten?".
No. But close.
He went ahead and attacked babies.
An infant.
Yes, Donald went after American Babies. And he didn't mean the Kardashian babes, nor the American campus babies, he meant actual, plump little crying infants in their mother's arms.
Many said, "Turn out the lights...this party is over."

It's about campaign contributions.
His praise for anyone but himself is disingenuous, Machiavellian. He looks out for number one almost exclusively.

Listening to Mr. Trump's comments, I was struck by the difference between his reading scripted lines and his off-the-cuff remarks. Whoever wrote the scripted lines for him has not captured his speaking style. Just as in his convention speech, the vocabulary and syntax are clearly not his, and he does not seem comfortable with them.
Further, it seemed to me his audience responded differently to script and riff. His listeners seemed confused when the Trump they have come to expect turned frequently into a Trump speaking in complete, grammatically correct sentences with nothing inflammatory in them.

Divisiveness got Trump to the point of being the Republican nominee. UNITY will carry Mr. Trump the rest of the way.
Talk of "Building Walls" and trading jabs w/ Megyn Kelly won Trump the majority of the Republican primary vote. Everybody knows you are going to build that wall, Mr. Trump. What the people don't believe is that you can UNIFY the party. So, you are now beginning to show them.
Trump was NEVER denigrating the mother of a fallen soldier. Trump has the utmost respect for our veterans and wants veterans and their families to be treated much better by the administration.
What Trump was commenting on in his comment about Mrs. Khans silence is the whole obscenity of the Democratic Machine milking the Khan's misery for their own agenda. Mr. Khan gets his many weeks of fame and gets to whine on every network that will have him, and the Democrats make Trump look callous all because he called them out on using the Khan's as puppets. You better believe that Mr. Khan is getting paid for some of his media appearances. OF COURSE Mr. Kahn says America is already great. We are great compared to much of the world. But, we are not great compared to the America we used to be.
I am in Chicago where police brutality and a murder of an unarmed black man was videotaped a week ago and released today. It made national news. No, Mr. Khan, America is NOT great. Chicago Public Schools laid off 500 more teachers today (elementary teachers mostly). No, Mr. Khan, America is not great.

I suppose this might be considered one of Mr. Trump's better efforts but then you hear this comment about Ms. Clinton's missing emails. “Some people have been saying that, that the N.S.A. has them.” I'm sorry, what's changed?
3
Donald showed great courage while reading from a prepared text in what was obviously a hostage video,
10
Let's see what the half life of this happy moment is. I'm thinking 48 hours, tops.

Anybody who thinks a controversy like this isn’t going to flare up again soon, and that Trump is suddenly going to become a serious candidate deeply knowledgeable of the issues, raise your hand.
I thought so. Now consider four years like this, when Trump won’t be able to roll back some outrageously infantile comment about another country or leader, because when you’re president, what you say is out there, and out there for keeps.
Yeah.
David Duke, OK, I can see him supporting the Putin-Trump ticket, because his view of America is so warped that it must come from a perverse alternate universe. Ditto, the crazies at the rallies. But I hope everyone else thinks real hard, and considers all the people trying to put distance between themselves and Trump like he’s the carrier of an infectious character disease.
What do they know? What many of us are seeing clearer each day. There’s something seriously wrong with the guy. He doesn’t act like a normal person. Like an adult.
It’s not the media or the establishment. It’s him.
I wouldn’t want a boss like this, much less someone who’s passing whims will direct the most powerful military in the world,
Vote for him if you want, I guess. But you’re going to have to own that decision, and all that comes from it, because the warning signs are everywhere.

Our times are violent, and the condition of our planet is tenuous. Don’t know who said this first; in an imperfect world, filled with imperfect people, we are foolish to expect perfect solutions to our problems.
I am choosing to vote for Hillary Clinton.
Donald Trump is a buffoon, a twittering mess of aging testosterone, ignorant about the issues, hateful, a bully with no class. If you read this and are angry, are you a racist? Are you a misogynist? To support Trump after all of his insults, all of his displays of ignorance about the world stage, showing absolutely no ability to empathize with anyone or anything but himself, doesn’t leave you with much room to insist that you are none of the above. Can’t stand Hillary? Don’t vote for her. Supporting Trump means supporting the most vile and hateful traits that humans possess.

All these endorsements are meaning less. However they are needed to keep the individual egos under control.
Hopefully in future Ryan. McCain etc. as adults will convey their disagreements, concerns or complaints to Trump in private instead of rushing to the media and create a circus.

Musing further about this sudden, unexpected move, I am picturing Mike Pence still trying not to think about this line: "If you don’t like me, that’s O.K.... Vote for Pence because it’s the same thing.”. And I wonder if it'll occur to him that while Trump magnanimously let him endorse Ryan & McCain less than 48 hours ago, he neither mentioned he was about to endorse them on Friday anyway, nor called him to ask if it'd be OK to do so.

"“As Donald Trump has said stupid things and been rude to so many people over the past year, I usually chalked it up to inexperience and the spotlight of an incredibly hostile press,” the speaker, Robin Vos, wrote. “But since the convention, his lack of judgment has got to concern even the most ardent Trump supporters.”"
Therein we have the problem - GOP members and operatives and elected officials who have been incredibly naive in not understanding that Trump is who he is; that he is not going to change his stripes; that there is not a calmer, rational, more statesman-like Donald Trump right under the surface just waiting to come out once he gets the hang of it all. Yes, he will settle down and make nice occasionally for he has a deep seated need to be liked, which in the case of his own side can sometimes very briefly make him contrite and 'proper.' That said, the next time someone provokes or displeases him, he will act in his usual off-the-cuff, unpredictable, pot-shot mode. It is who he is. Now imagine that in the White House.

By this time it is obvious that Donald Trump cannot control his statements and actions, and has continually manifested the disability to do so. From all of the articles and escapades about him and his past life, this is his temperament and he cannot control or change it. He has yet to expressly say that he is sorry and wrong about anything and seek forgiveness, which are the mores of our society. Ever. Does this mean he is a bad human being? Those who have relationships with him will have to decide that. The rest of us don't have to do so. It just means he shouldn't be our President.
In addition to those who are trained in psychology and psychiatry, any logically, normal person should be able to see this by now. Especially, those in leadership positions in Congress, RYAN AND McCONNELL. THE OATHS THEY TOOK IS TO AMERICA, NOT THE GOP. THEY OWE FIRST FEALTY TO ALL AMERICANS, AND NOT JUST THOSE OF THEIR PARTY. When we fought our Revolution in 1776, we didn't fight for some and not others. It was about OUR FUTURE FOR EVERYONE. This debate is no longer philosophical or ideological, but should be pragmatic and practical and is our responsibility. IT IS ABOUT SOMETHING BIGGER THAN PARTY AND ANY PERSON.
Unfortunately, everyone should be honestly thinking only about one thing above everything else. Do we trust this man, to have the power to annihilate the world in a momentary fit of pique? BECAUSE, HE CAN'T CHANGE HIS MIND, OR THEN SAVE OUR LIVES, OR THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT.

Psychoanalysis at a distance is tempting, but clinically worthless.
1
@ Raymond
Since the Donald isn't seeking treatment, its clinical worth is irrelevant. And a full psychoanalysis is hardly necessary to determine this man's manifest unsuitability for the presidency. I wouldn't ask him to look after my dog for a week-end.

Damned with faint praise. He struggled to force the words out of his mouth.
56
Liberal's and Republicans should not kid themselves. Without his endorsement Ryan was toast but Trump put a little mustard on him and serve Ryan for breakfast. Another reason why Trump has my vote locked in no matter what. Play games with him and he will return to favor.
5
Hehehe right, Ryan was toast in his primary election against... um... that guy. Sure, the Speaker of the House's seat is always a really iffy election.
Ya know, by constantly making up this silliness in support of Trump, you're probably undermining him. Much like his worthless endorsement hurts Ryan a bit.

Ha, l'll have a second beer! Possessive Liberals? What our taxes?
SPEAKER Ryan does NOT need drump. SPEAKER Ryan is close to his constituents, he goes home every weekend. Is well known in the district and people like him. drump needs him not the other way around. You know not of what you write, just another talking.......

I watched the whole speech, he sound so sincere
Party leadership probably told him to do it or they will pull the rug out from under him.
If McCain had anymore integrity(which he doesnt) he would refuse the this hollow endorsement.

How many times do we have to keep having to hear about this phony go back and forth over something that nobody even cares about ?

good - he will be helping McCain and Ayotte - lose - his seal of approval will be their kiss of death.

I would miss McCain, wherever he retracts to I hope he lets - Maygun the Republican Valley Girl - stay on the radio, information notwithstanding, still extremely entertaining.

My Lord, what a bunch of childish ninnies playing "Mother May I." Unless one says the magic words, advancement is impossible.
Of course Donald Trump takes this beyond a childish game and acts out of spite and petty revenge. He is certainly not putting anyone's interests above his own.
We already had a dose of spiteful revenge thinking tinged with paranoia in the White House during the Nixon administration. It got Nixon fired and left a gaping wound in our national body politic. I for one don't want to relive that scenario, but that is where we are headed if Trump wins.

And now we find out that Nixon would walk the WH at night, drunk, miserable and threatening to blow up the world. Good Lord! That can never happen again.
3
It was amusing to watch Mr. Trump read his carefully scripted statements today, without ever looking up. Forcing the candidate to stay on message is the Republican equivalent of cutting off Samson's hair; without bluster, he's stiff, ineffectual and dare I say, boring. I don't think he'll last long in his "time out," though. his head is apt to explode.
145
I agree on the boring part.
No one ever talks about how ineffective a speaker he is. May be that's because he has the vocabulary of a 12 year old !

If Trump, this deranged man, is condemned universally by our Intelligence officials as an imminent threat to our nation and people should he be elected President, then what lawful steps must be taken in our defense against his taking of the Presidency?
Indeed, our shocking inaction is a greater evil than the one Trump now poses as he stumbles across our television screen while his family, to say nothing of the nation, fretfully looks on.

Interesting that some thought that these endorsements were wonderful and compelling. I must agree with the writer who suggested that the speech had all of the characteristics of a statement being read by a hostage with a gun pointed at him
134
Mommy told him he couldn't have his tricycle back until he said, "I'm sorry."

Whatever our faults, millions of people around the world still look to this country
as a model for achieving democratic progress and economic growth in their own countries.
Elect Trump and hope for the future will dim in many faraway places, with far-reaching consequences that may make some of our present problems look like child’s play.

"“I need a Republican Senate and a House to accomplish all of the change we have to make,” Mr. Trump said. He added, “I understand and embrace the wisdom of Ronald Reagan’s big tent within the party.”"
Not exactly a full throated endorsement of sitting Republicans. It seems to be another example of his 'transactional' approach.

Big tent _within_ the party? I don't think DJT understand's RR's "big tent" notion.
17
Hey wait a minute, does this mean Trump just endorsed the guy he thought was a loser for being a P.O.W., whom he didn't like because he likes winners? The guy that just reprimanded him at length about why attacking a Gold Star mother was wrong?
I have to wonder what changed his mind. Is he taking orders from Pence now? Why exactly didn't he just go ahead and endorse him when Pence did? What does all this mean, if anything?

The only thing worse than not having Trump endorse you would be having him endorse you. It's a lose/lose proposition.
78
He has the audacity to say of Hillary Clinton, "She is pretty close to unhinged"? If that's not the pot calling the kettle black . . . .
Folks, we need to shake some sense into the people in these battleground states because if this man gets even close to the White House, we might as well kiss the world as we know it bub-bye.

This election cycle feels like a game of global chicken... are we trying to prove we are crazy enough to elect Trump so the rest of the world shouldn't mess with us?
51
Perhaps the most disingenuous individual ever to run for the presidency - and that sets a high bar.
45
Was he choking on those words or what? Like he was trying to force down the super overcooked white meat turkey during Thanksgiving, with NO gravy. Since he also was forced to walk back ejecting a baby from the rally...I predict that so much backtracking at one time (plus getting yelled at by Reince Priebus) will cause another raging tweetstorm within a week!
54
Nothing to do with healing "rifts". It's all for the glory and honor of Donald trump. He doesn't do *anything* that doesn't have direct benefit to himself.
34
Given that Trump lies and lies and lies, why should it be news that he now "endorses" other candidates? Why should we believe him now?
21
#trumptweet, missing Olympics to tweet about my huge endorsements. Sad!
9
Who cares? Is Trump any less repulsive than before his begrudging endorsements?
56
Too late for many of us to think Trump has any possibility of being rehabilitated. The Emperor stands there completely naked and he is a sight to see. Nothing presentable will fit this mentally ill creature. Thank goodness we have enough of a view for decent people to run as fast as they possibly can in the opposite direction. And rehabilitated to what? This is who Trump is and always has been. A wretch of a human being, much less a dreadful choice to remotely contemplate as the president of this country. Or even Somali.
35
Excellent, now their democratic opponents can run ads of "Endorser Trump" calling women pigs, and vote every Republican out of Congress.
24
Is the GOP going to remove Trump from the ticket before November, by fair means or foul? I heard they were. Certainly some people seem to think they will. I think I saw them talking about it on a secret tape, or maybe in the National Enquirer (which is a great magazine, really, trusted by millions of Americans, you know), anyway, I forget, but from a good source. Yes, my source was a good guy, a good man with a great reputation, really great. I wish I could tell you who it was - you would all certainly know his name, he's a really high source who has the inside scoop - but I just can't breach the confidence that this man entrusted me with. But anyway, a lot of people are talking about it.
77
Say "goodnight" Donald.
8
If McCain, Ayotte, and Ryan had had an ounce of backbone in them, they would have worn Trump's refusal to endorse them as a badge of honor!
44
What leads Trump to suspect that Ryan wants, needs or will even accept Trump's endorsement?
1
Are you kidding? Ryan the consumate politician (not a compliment) would accept the endorsement of a rattlesnake if he thought it would garner him a few extra votes.
21
Yes, of course you are right about Ryan (no self-respecting rattlesnake would endorse Ryan)
Even so, if Ryan thinks that Trump is certain to lose, would it not be to Ryan's benefit to dismiss Trump as Ryan works to take back control of his party?
Ryan will be only 52 years old in eight years.

It just doesn't end. This guy reminds me of a Borscht Belt comedian in his delivery style, yet is totally nefarious and narcissistic. He astounds. And then there are the lack of any tax returns. The ludicrous letter from his doctor last December saying he is the healthiest human being possible. Uh, no, sorry he is looking more rotund every day. Honestly, he seems like he is already exhibiting dementia. God save the Republic.
51
Uh, who's the doctor who proclaimed this guy the healthiest person in the country? Name, please. Since Trump is obviously overweight, it's equally obvious that the doctor is a craven money-grubber--or that Trump has lied again.
Not to mention the increasing concern about his mental state. Some have wondered if he's showing signs of senile dementia, but given the fact that he's behaved badly from childhood, it seems to me more likely that he has classic narcissistic personality disorder. Check it out:
https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/000934.htm
If that ain't Trump, I'll eat my hat.

To all the genius pundits, this election is now signed, sealed and delivered. Love her, hate her -- that there does not seem to be a middle in the muddle about Hillary Clinton is all that is certain -- but this election is baked in and will just be warming in the oven for the next 92 days.
All that remains is to count her 400 electoral votes: 400 electoral votes from all the likely and once seemingly unlikely states, and a bunch more from the most unlikely of states. With her will come a clear Senate majority. a House near parity and a gain of 15 to 20 state legislative chambers to reshape the 2022 election for Congress. Oh and, lest we forget, a 7-2 Supreme Court majority by 2020 to engrave Roe v. Wade in American law, disinter Citizens United to give it a proper hanging before burying it for once and ever, and. oh yes, yo restore the full faith and credit of the federal union behind the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Let's hope so!

Carl Zeitz was a political reporter at the Atlantic City Press ca. 30 years ago under eccentric Charlie Reynolds, publisher. I enjoyed Carl's reportage; if you are he, thank you.
8
From your lips to the ears of the Fates. (Oh, and Paul Ryan can toss those change of address cards; he won't be relocating to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, either.)
3
The NYT ran a story yesterday concerning speculation about Donald Trump's "fitness" to serve as president. This is no time for euphemism. The question that devastates Trump is whether he exercises full control of his faculties. Or is he "nuts"?
20
The fact that Trump has been forced on his knees to kiss the rings of Ryan, McCain and Ayotte betrays his claim that he is independent of the establishment.
Just another Trump fantasy.
Just another Trump fantasy.
65
Aw well, there go the chances of Mr. Whatzisface & Mr. Hoozis, those two contenders for these extremely safe senate seats. I even caught an article about the one trying for Ryan, but now that all the Republican rifts have been healed by Donald Alone, I doubt we'll hear those two contenders names again.
I wonder if Donald will be donating anything to their campaigns, or possibly the dozen senators who are struggling to hang onto their seats.

8
Funny how often conspiracy nuts begin with the words "Some people say...".
22
Who wants an endorsement from a candidate who plans on ignoring NATO, and who is unable to ever understand America's diplomatic relationships?
18
Wouldn't it be great to learn what really happened behind the scenes--threats, yelling, screaming between Ryan, McCain and Trump supporters before Trump changed his mind. This announcement was made under duress by Trump who is danger of being abandoned by much of the GOP leadership.
PAUL FEINER
PAUL FEINER
21
He knows we have it all on tape right? He can't take it back.
17
Hasn't stopped him before.
14
This just underscores the cowardice of Paul Ryan and other Republican leaders! Sheesh, these people are beneath and beyond contempt!
37
Trump is the master at projection: as in projecting all of his own characteristics (the worst ones) on others. Years from now, decades from now, psychologists, psychiatrists and other professionals who study the the human psyche, will have written their sabbatical thesis's' on this man. It's all very fascinating, if only it weren't so damned frightening.
32
Actually because of "The Goldwater Rule" that probably won't happen, but I think that political scientists and sociologists will weigh in, examining demagoguery in the age of Twitter.
4
And what about those who support him? What where they thinking?
2
Clown. Confused transparent clown. Who knew pancake make-up caused dementia?
35
Reality is a dessert best served cold.
10
To avoid further pressure Donald too decides to pay Paul Ryan in his own coin by choosing a second thought endorsement.
6
Trump deliberately rips Ryan, McCain, and Ayotte earlier in the week because he just couldn't resist. His new endorsement of them is not an effort to heal the party, but another slap at them to show he's the big boss. If Trump wanted to heal and unify the party, he would have exercise a little self-control before slamming all three candidates earlier. But he has no self control, showing he'd rather do any amount of damage rather than miss a chance to get even.
21
Trump's oft-repeated campaign slogan:
"Something's going on. I don't know."
"Something's going on. I don't know."
38
Lots of people are saying that ya know. Lots of people.
9
"Something's happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear. There's a man with fake hair over there, telling me I got to beware." (Apologies to Stephen Stills)
17
Trump's life force is in misleading people for his own benefit. Every time, all the time. Aside from the anxiety he sows among leaders of other countries, why should any reasonable person give a darn what Donald J. Trump says about anything ? Really. The country is made up up of a lot of reasonable people and a small percentage (even 10% is 32 million people) of loudly opinionated yahoos who do not regularly vote.
14
What we didn't see is the gun pointed at Mr. Trump's head as he flatly read the prepared statement.
Never underestimate the mendacity of today's GOP.
Never underestimate the mendacity of today's GOP.
44
It's astonishing that he listened to his paid advisors, followed their instructions and read what was put in his hand. But how could anyone possibly believe him as he robotically reversed himself on the wholly mean-spirited harangue that he first aimed at John McCain?
10
I think the GOP threatened to remove their ground game organizations...Trump's failed to put that together and he desperately needs their help. There is no other reason for Trump to swallow the insults he laid at their feet...especially towards McCain who Trump clearly hates. I've never seen a more insincere endorsement.
10
Who cares? An rx-CIA director says he's distinctly unqualified, and in essence, a puppet of Putin. Stick a fork in Trump.
56
Donald is still trying to surf that news cycle, but he is slipping off the board, and the shore is getting closer.
10
“I understand and embrace the wisdom of Ronald Reagan’s big tent within the party.” Who wrote that? Trump's scriptwriters? Trump speaking complete sentences, grammatically and syntactically correct? Gimme a break. Maybe he thought he was saying: "“I understand and embrace the wisdom of Ronald Reagan’s big party within the tent.”
28
These Trump endorsements are like the greatest endorsements ever and I mean ever. Some would even say huge, almost better than a purple heart. I said almost. That is just me making another sacrifice for the country I love. But hey, you know this is me we are talking about right? We are still talking about me right? Yes, good, ok, that's good.
Ivanka will tell you how great these endorsements are and say isn't she looking great for a women who just gave birth and then doing a fashion walk in Cleveland. Did you see that dress? Great dress right, spectacular right? They are sold exclusively at Macy's by the way so check it out. No one wants to lock her up, ok? So yes Ivanka will be a great asset to have in the White House as a member of my cabinet.
Speaking of the White House not a bad job by those slaves right? I mean, come on, the thing is still standing and looking great. How about that my African-Americans, there are two right over there by the door. Melina really wants to get in the White House and make some changes, nothing to big. Maybe some stuffed elephants or lions that the boys shot while conserving wildlife, some gold, definitely more gold, but she'll be in charge of that. So you know Melina graduated with honors in architecture and design from Ljubljana University. That university the like the Harvard of Slovenia, you know a really really great school like Oxford. Melina is smart like me.
We are still talking about me right? Yes, good.

Nick Corasaniti's article is an account of one of the most tumultuous episodes of the Trump candidacy. We do indeed close out this week, waiting for the surprises in the next.
We are witnessing the collapse of a political party. Trump is the latest fault. This party controls congress, but we can't forget that it took them several failures to find a Speaker of the House. And as for the Senate, Mitch McConnell had to fend off attacks from the Tea Party. The failure of the George W. Bush presidency left Republicans without leadership, at which point Donald Trump could enter.
Right now, this nation is a one-party show. This latest act in Green Bay twists the plot once again. Next year is going to be a very unsettled one for Republicans. The question is, will this nation be able to accomplish anything with a disrupted Republican party?
RNC officials might fret over the condition of their party, but it's their voters who have put it in this position. RNC leadership might rail against Trump, but they need to raise the character of their voters. These voters were created by the same media that Republicans have used to vilify Democrats. And ironically, some of that media has come apart with the ignominious departure of Roger Ailes.
Donald Trump, as he rants conspiracies in Green Bay, is only an outward symptom of a much deeper disease within the Republican Party. Right now, no one has a cure.

A bedlated kiss of death?

Paul Ryan like most of his colleagues support party over principles. He is very much aware that Donald Trump will likely lose his bid for the presidency and he does not care much about his endorsement. He is trying hold on to congress. He is fighting to save GOP which is being dismantled by a mad man.
16
"Mr. Trump said ... 'I understand and embrace the wisdom of Ronald Reagan’s big tent within the party.' He paused to ask the Democrats in the crowd to raise their hands. Hardly anyone made a sound. Mr. Trump ... offered that he did not need Democrats anyway."
Sorry, but Mr. Reagan DID welcome Democratic voters to vote for him and other Republican candidates. Mr. Tent has a small tent strategy.
Mr. Trump should instead be named Mr. Bluff. He is all talk.

11
I am a Republican and I will not put party over nation. I will not vote for Trump! He is a disaster and would be the worst possible outcome for this country.
130
Thank you, JetSanDiego, you give me hope for our nation. I'd add that if you want to vote for Mr. Issa, or Mr. Valadao, or whomever's also on the ticket, you'd have this democrat's approval.
5
Republicans are shocked at what he says and want him to muzzle himself. Why? By working so hard to stop Trump from saying things he obviously believe, Republicans are walking down a very muddy road: why do they feel it necessary to ask him to hide his true beliefs? Has honesty disappeared so completely that this remarkable petition, to ask him to appear to be someone he is not, is made without comment?
11
This man is absurd.
24
Trump is a phony coward who has fooled very ignorant people.
44
Trump undercut the news by the way that he delivered it. His clumsy effort to read from a sheet of paper conveyed to supporters & Republican voters that his change of tune was done under duress. No one will believe it is genuine -- the damage is done.
45
Is he a presidential candidate or a mischievous 5th grader? Why when he doesn't mess up the place do people say he's getting presidential? Why can't I wake up from this nightmare?
39
I'm beginning the countdown to the next gaff. He just can't help it!
18
While beginning this countdown, just remember, these are not gaffs. This is what this man means. If he's reading something to the crowd, you can be sure he's chafing at that. Countdown probably won't last very long to the next disaster he creates.
10
So what was the point of all of that then? Trump acts the fool, causes his party a lot of stress and then backs down. The man doesn't even have the power of his convictions, probably because he doesn't have any.
18
Great news for Ryan and McCain! About as valuable as a Trump "University" Diploma, believe me.
109
Domo Arrigato Trumpo Roboto...........
.......Psycho Don bows to his RNC masters.
Eating crow with Trumpster grace.

Flip-flopper.
28
So, he looks down, and reads his 20-word, scripted "endorsement" and then ad-libs a thunderous testimonial consisting of "good man, good guy," as if he were hosting a late-night show and Ryan is one of the sponsors whom he never met, but "good man, whatever he is." Did they feel the earth move?
24
I and most others might agree..McCain nor Ryan want Trump' endorsement.
Keep in mind, the former head of the CIA publicly within this newspaper...Trump is dangerous for America and the American people.
McCain just lost votes if he "accepts" Trump's endorsement.

24
Each and every GOPer who sticks with Drumpf must pay for their support of this madman. The Dems can hammer all candidates everywhere. Drumpf is universally reviled. His name will raise a stench anywhere in this country. This is how we get the Senate and the House. Let each and every GOPer candidate express if they support this threat to our country. Let us try to defeat as many of them as possible.
37
What a frivolous attempt at party unity and a move only a politician would make. Ryan/McCain receive an endorsement from a man whose words they have to consistently distance themselves from. They have been unable to pin point where they agree with their nominee yet they continue to support his candidacy. History will not be kind to their cowardice.
37
This brings to mind the famous quotation of George Burns: “Acting is all about sincerity. If you can fake that, you've got it made. ”
George was funny though, but the Donald is terrifying!
George was funny though, but the Donald is terrifying!
29
"We may disagree on a couple of things, but mostly we agree." On what? Perhaps on the palpable insincerity from both sides of the GOP, whose members want only to grasp power rather than to promote the general welfare. All of them together form the embodiment of depraved indifference.
41
I mean honestly, at this point I'm past sick of hearing about the man
23
After all this Ryan and McCain accepted Trump's endorsement?
No shame and no patriotism.
No shame and no patriotism.
54
Aw, wouldn't it have been great if John McCain (often a man who stands on principle), replied to this by rejecting Trump's endorsement, and retracting his own? I'd vote for him just based on that.
6
Having been the mother of two 4 year olds, I recognize that Trump's publicized refusal to initially back anyone who criticized him (even if the criticism was warranted) is nothing more than a petulant "getting back at you" response. And this late-breaking development is because Mommy-RNC explained there would be no dessert unless he was complaint. In a 4 year old, I would think the lesson was partially learned. In a 70 year old? Hopeless. What you see is what you will get, and heaven help us if he is President and there is no greater authority.
639
The greater authority is the American people.
1
Nixon famously treated the public on a 4 year old level. Now we have a 4 year old trying to be in charge of a nation of 4 year olds.
2
He couldn't just do the straight endorsement gig. He had to mention his personal wealth being used for his campaign, and brought up that whole baby incident again, albeit with a few new details not seen or heard by anyone. No matter what he's asked / told to do for others, he'll always find a way to swivel that spotlight back on himself.
21
He has no shame
10
Don't forget how Trump over emphasized the fact that Pence asked his permission before he endorsed Ryan. He made it very clear that Pence only went forward after he cleared it with him.
Pathetic.
Pathetic.
14
He is a paranoid character. He cultivates paranoia with a classic pattern of "thought": "I don't know, but some people have been saying... and it might be true, in fact it is true and I saw it on TV just like the celebrating Muslims over in Jersey City and the piles of cash in an airplane, and it suggests there is aplot, in fact it proves that there's a plot".
16
They gave Trump a hard time about their endorsements, Ryan saying at one point that he "wasn't there yet."
Politics involves a lot of pay back. Of course Trump then gave them a taste of their own medicine, including the same words. Then he belatedly endorsed them, just as they belatedly endorsed him. This is not surprising, certainly not full of Earth-shattering meaning.
It was useful to Democrats to have the dissension and disorder in Republican ranks. Don't make more of it than it was. It was just a small gift to its opposition.

No one here is worried about your party anymore. Stick a fork in it. It's the country we are worried about. Trump isn't the biggest problem. The Trump voter is.
4
Deborah -- That isn't my party. People like you ruined my party. I want it back.
That starts by defeating Hillary's betrayal. She is the one who left us with no good option.
She is the one who thinks she can do anything to us, get away with anything, of only her opponent is even worst than her. That is what we must stop.
We must defeat that game, even at great cost. It is Hillary supporters who put this country into that no-win.
Trump is just her way to get back into power and do it to us some more, to betray us as we have been for so long.

“Is [something potentially slanderous or obviously not true]? I don’t know,” said Trump. Some people have said [something potentially slanderous or obviously not true]. It’s horrible/disgusting/sad.”
Mr. Trump has been doing this for months. Saying something that he has no proof or evidence for, and claiming that it is only repeating what “some people” have said. The media should challenge him on this, asking why he continues to make baseless charges against people while blaming it on “some people”.

37
Very important point that you raise. It has always enraged me and I am not sure why more people are not alarmed about this. Trump uses the phrase "people say" to send a dog whistle to cultivate an angry core base of followers that are not able to distinguish fact from fiction . " People say that Obama was not born in Hawaii". " People say that Obama is not a Christian"
"People say that the election is rigged" etc.
Remember when Trump brought up Ben Carson's religion during a rally in Florida last October? "I'm Presbyterian, he said. "Boy, that's down the middle of the road, folks, in all fairness. I mean, Seventh-day Adventist, I don't know about. I just don't know about." That was clearly to "send a dog whistle to some conservatives who claim the Seventh-day Adventists are not Christian"
When a political figure does this and is not challenged by the public, the foundation is laid for the classical patterns of demagoguery and dictatorship that we have seen in the 20th century.

Not just on a Friday afternoon, but during the Olympics opening ceremony. Could he possibly have picked a less-watched time to reverse course?
15
What a lackluster endorsement. Trump looked like he was starring in a fake hostage video. And this is the GOP standard-bearer, who will need to work Paul Ryan, if elected president?
14
Man up, Donald! The only notice about you I care to read is the contents of your tax returns.
64
What a joke this guy is. I'm going to print a new bumper sticker: Real Estate Developer for President. My goodness, you can't make this stuff up.
14
Bad Choices, Donald....BAD!! Both of these people are weak.
3
To be honest, Ryan is easy enough to condemn on his own terms. Those budget ideas of his are not good, not good at all. McCain occasionally shows a glimmer, but Sarah Palin? The start of the rot was really Reagan and his idea that trickle up was a good idea. (Remember Iran contra and Caspar Weinberger? Ollie North is busy trying to claim giving the Iranians their money back is worse than that scandal. No trick too dirty for them.)
36
The oldman-child has expressed remorse like my 2-year-old does when he finally acknowledges he was wrong. This is news? He will back off his endorsements tomorrow in all likelihood.
22
A day late, a dollar short, the damage is done, thank God !!!
11
As a Democrat, Donald Trump is the best thing to happen to Republicans since Goldwater. "Let Trump, be Trump!" Bad poll numbers made these endorsements possible and it is hard for the candidate to walk back previous statements, once he jumped off the cliff.
Establishment Republicans mostly seem to not know what to do, mildly rebuke him or ignore him. Ignoring him just gives him more power. Now that at least four Republican Senators are down below challengers, it's going to be an interesting 90 days to the election.
No modern candidate for the President since Harry Truman in 1948 has made up from a deficit this big. Now the Republican candidate will ask to double the number of debates to six or ten because he will become desperate to change the narrative so far. My prediction is that Trump continues and drops out two weeks before the election.

Doubt he will be willing to debate at all.
2
After having refused to endorse Ryan, Trump has somehow decided that it's all right to do so now. Now, some people would say that he's doing so because this would get him out of a tight political spot based on a lot of negative publicity. But Trump, being the wise man that he is, went back and looked at the facts, and has now corrected his error. Obviously, he's showing an ability to be flexible and consider new information. At least, that seems to be the tactic of a campaign that insists that you can fool all of the people all of the time.
152
His followers are the biggest suckers. I could sell them snake oil, and the snake that makes it.
3
Trump lies constantly and knows nothing. Con man. Period.

As Jimmy Carter said: At a lecture Wednesday in Britain’s House of Lords, Mr. Carter, 91, was asked to give his “assessment” of American politics, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
After predicting that Hillary Clinton would win the Democratic nomination over Sen. Bernard Sanders, Mr. Carter said he would prefer Mr. Trump to win the Republican nomination over Mr. Cruz.
“I think I would choose Trump, which may surprise some of you,” he said. “The reason is, Trump has proven already he’s completely malleable.
“I don’t think he has any fixed [positions] he’d go the White House and fight for. On the other hand, Ted Cruz is not malleable. He has far-right-wing policies he’d pursue if he became president,” Mr. Carter said. - Jessica Chasmar - The Washington Times - Friday, February 5, 2016.

If those three had any principles, they would say they don't accept his "endorsement" , giving them the higher ground, and make them look like actual patriotic members of the government of the greatest country on earth, the USA, but they won't. They are cowards. And they are guilty by association of the worst kinds of bigotry. And if Trump keeps pushing it, guilty of inciting violence, and accessories to murder. It's where it's heading. Our country is armed to the teeth, and Trump is already sounding like a sore loser who's not going down without inciting horrible things.
BTW, Trump is now down 85 to 15 in the NBC/ CNN crying baby poll
No candidate has ever won when down in this poll

"If those three had any principles"
You are talking about Paul Ryan of the magic asterisk, much hyped budget plans that don't add up, offered with the claim that they do and others don't. The guy would not know a principle if it bit him.

The GOP base will not allow a scripted emasculated Trump. The GOP leadership still hope they can "guide" a favorable Trump outcome. Very interesting (if not somewhat scary) election year stretch ahead
8
"The endorsement of Mr. Ryan is unlikely to assuage some Republicans who are concerned by the combative and provocative Trump campaign and have grown frustrated that the nearly daily controversies have made it more difficult to focus on the perceived weaknesses of the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton."
Unfortunately for them, their candidate has far more weaknesses than Clinton.

This overestimates Hillary.

I'm of the camp that Clinton's weaknesses are amplified by the lens of sexism. Not even a greedy, narcissistic dimwit can balance the scales of bias. She should be in the 60s/70s, and not just the high 40s.
18
L.P. -- Just keep explaining away Hillary's problems as the sexism of bad voters. She'll lose that way.
No doubt there is sexism in this country, and it does add to her problems. But Hillary has real problems, and too many of her supporters wallow in victimhood like this response, instead of facing her problems, admitting them and dealing with them.
Obama won despite racism. He did not blame bad voters for being nasty racists, though no doubt some were.

Sometimes I think the only reason he is running for president is to eventually pardon himself, or his debts.
31
The Conald is taking a lot of people for a ride on this latest reality show of his.
25
Even worse news for Ryan and the others than no endorsement.
22
Watching the video of him reading from a written script as he "endorses" this trio is like watching someone take a forced walk off a plank.
35
Well, his talking points were actually written down and it looks like he stayed pretty close to the script. But it was oh so boring. How long will the Trump supporters put up with Donald Trump, establishment mouthpiece? Not to worry, he'll revert to the short attention span megalomaniac Donald in a couple of days. And then those middle American Trump fans will have their entertainer back.
14
did you notice the lack of enthusiasm by the audience when he was reading from the notes. His base wants red meat, don't really care for the truth, just someone who will bolster their fragile egos.
12
I am a Trump supporter and I loved it.
Even my fanatically Democratic wife said it was a great speech
Even my fanatically Democratic wife said it was a great speech
Trump, who spent months criticizing Hillary Clinton for reading off of a teleprompter read most of tonight's speech from note cards that were obviously written for him. His presentation was very flat; obviously his heart wasn't in it.
18
Low energy, perhaps?
12
Of course!! He was forced to eat his ego up (and that's a big meal if there has ever been one!) and go against what he has been preaching he hates, conformity to the establishment.
Well done Mr. Trump and congrats on becoming a true politician.
Well done Mr. Trump and congrats on becoming a true politician.
4
The Donald says, Hillary is "... pretty close to unhinged." I wonder if he has ever heard of the psychological concept of projection?
53
No better time for a big announcement than during the Olympic opening ceremonies. Doh!
12
As Democrats, we must not let up on "Don the Con" and the Republicans who are placing party above nation supporting the worst presidential candidate in the history of this great nation! is needs a Democratic Congress to get this nation moving again! As for Speaker Ryan, you will be nothing more than minority leader on November 9th!
18
I am a Republican and I do not place part above nation. I do NOT SUPPORT and WILL NOT VOTE for Trump. Trump has zero ability to lead, supports & admires dictators, is thin skinned, did not know what the nuclear triad is, should NEVER be given classified briefings, is a lousy businessman who has abused and hurt many hard working people, should NEVER have spoken to the Kahns the way he did. In short, he is TOTALLY UNFIT FOR ANYTHING
54
I don't know you at all but solely on the basis of this comment I can say you are a better Republican than your party's candidate, or current leadership. You deserve better from them.
2
For what it's worth.
5
The pot endorses the kettle.
16
In the realm of personal relationships isn't it really just too late to repair this mess between Trump and the rest of his party?
How should our leader act when confronted with an adverse reaction to his policies or ideology?
in regard to the Iranian hostage issue, this morning Mr . Trump, after having negated what he said yesterday, felt the need to tell others that he was forced to do it by his staff. Or at least he inferred that.
All indicators seem to be pointing to Mr Putin being a mentor to Mr Trump . I'm not sure this is how we want to train or next leader. ...Advantage Putin.

13
Trump's endorsements had all the sincerity of an animatronic figure or a Middle East hostage reading prepared statements.
52
He knew Vlad was watching.
7
Cue his next tantrum in 5-4- ...
34
Yesterday he didn't want to , today he endorse , tomorrow after a tweet he doesn't like he'll change his mind . What a great president potential we can look forward
18
He was "just kidding," as usual............. What an adolescent fool this Trumpet is! What an embarrassment! Nations of every continent are laughing at us.
8
Given the realities of this man Trump, what real difference does it make if he "endorses" Ryan ? It doesn't except to continue the fraud called the republican party. Trump's word is worthless except to his yahoo supporters who could care less about government and private institutions that help keep society functioning at all.
20
If I ever were a Trump adviser -- never, EVER happen -- I would urge him never, EVER to use the adjective "unhinged."
23
If it weren't Ryan, Trump's endorsement would be the kiss of death. Ryan said yesterday he didn't ask for Trump's endorsement. Can he reject it now?
6
So his manager has ties to Putin and Russia. Very patriotic candidate--for Russia that is!!
I hope a night doesn't go by when Ryan and others have nightmares and wake up sweating over this horrible nomination. However it's refreshing to see that some Republicans have a conscience and will not be supporting Trump. I'm most disappointed in McCain. Even if I disagreed with him, I thought he was a man of principle and a patriot first and Republican second!

61
He should have, as Trump puts it, walked away from all three of them. That's why we joined the Trump train. Very disappointing. I hope his story of the "snake" doesn't come true. He also pulled an Obama by announcing late on Friday with the Olympics starting.
1
At elast Trump swallowed his pride admitted he was wrong and did what was right.
While this was going on, and not reported by The Times, but on tonight's "NBC Nightly News", Hillary Clinton was caught in a bold face lie. She denied she ever handled classified e-mails, while the FBI said that she did so.
So, in the span of three minutes we see Trump eating humble pie, and Hillary Clinton copping a lie.
Oh, NBC said she was leading bu nearly 10 points. That was before she lied to an NBC News reporter.
There is not much to like about Trump, but no one can say he is a Chronic liar. meanwhile, Clinton keeps shooting herself by lying when she is caught off guard.
Clinton has remade herself, and came up with so many stories, that she now cannot remember what she lied about and what she didn't.
So, the main choices is a loud mouth buffoon and a habitual liar.
And why I am voting fro Gary Johnson/William Weld.

Please get that tattoo next to your Nader one.
6
People can ABSOLUTELY say Trump is a chronic liar! I don't have the strength or the stomach for it, and I am deathly sick of even thinking about him, but there are probably hundreds of public examples at this point from his business dealings to seeing thousands of Muslims dancing in glee in Jersey City as the WTC came down to his income. She lies too, apparently but they are nowhere in the same league.

I'm sure that Speaker Paul D. Ryan is doing a victory dance now that he has secured Donald Trump's ringing endorsement!

You MUST be joking. He just yesterday made up a beauty, with all sorts of embellishments, describing the magnificent video quality of the money being flown into Iran in payoff for hostages. Only it didn't happen. It was a lie.

This is a joke, right? I just watched the CNN International feed here in Spain. He had to read his prepared statement, written by the GOP handlers, from the folded up speaking notes he always pulls out of the left breast pocket of his jacket.
I can just imagine that what was written was when he said, "Paul's a good guy, a good guy."
Ibid, for Senators McCain and Ayotte.
My eyes glaze over at the stupidity of any American who would buy into this staged event. But, then, Einstein said it best:
"The difference between genius and stupidity, is that genius has its limits."
Nuff said.

could be the best comment I have ever read.

That a boor like Trump could so easily make it this far in our political process makes me ashamed to be an American. That the Republican voter base has been (I was going to say 'educated') trained so well to key in on code phrases to indicate a hated enemy like 'liberal', 'Obama', and now 'Clinton' and react with well-known vein-popping outrage tells me they're convinced it's their patriotic duty. Even when all they have are innuendo and carefully worded headlines to imply something that isn't true. And that makes me doubly ashamed that so many of my fellow Americans are so willing to be led around by the nose to show their loyalty to GOP politicians who deserve no loyalty at all.
19
You are too kind, albeit keenly aware of the international implications.

Trump was so enthusiastic that he read the endorsements from a piece of paper. It was like let's get this over so we can move on. Keep an eye out if he campaigns for these candidates or even if they want him around in their states. Trump really only seems to seek the adulation of the crowds. Even supporters like Christie appear like props who he pulls off stage when he quickly tires of them.
23
Trump is just trying to improve his poll numbers. He probably hates Ryan's guts. I doubt he really, truly respects ANYONE. Trump is a complete narcissist who has no space in his head or heart for anyone but himself. A total right-off as someone who should hold any public office (and that includes dog-catcher--I wouldn't wish that on any dog).
51
I of course meant, "write-off," and I have no idea how it became "right-off." Oh, well.
Trump's endorsements are meaningless both to the endorsed candidate and to the voters. It is more important that the Republican Party and its leadership disavow itself from this man. Fortunately, this is not likely to happen.
31
Well, Trump can read a script. Probably as honestly as he "humbly" accepted the GOP nomination.
Words won't undo this past week. Month. Year. Decades.

I predict we get good ol' Don back to his old-self by mid-week (else his head will explode).

too late. nuff said.

Most conservative voters are fed up with the establishment GOP politicians. They see them as RINOs who have sold out ordinary Americans.
Conservatives, unlike liberals, are far less chained to their "party." If the RINOs are serving them, they will throw them out and go with Trump.
So, these endorsements don't matter to Trump voters. Trump voters--and there are millions upon millions of them--hate Ryan, McCain and all of the others who have been elected and then done nothing but stymie Obama on common-sense things OR enrich themselves.
NYT needs to wake up: Trump voters are not "Republicans." They are conservatives who have left the Republican party. So anything involving establishment Republicans doesn't matter to Trump voters.

7
Then please explain why Trump read something that was written for him and endorsed those three.
5
Wow. What news. Trump voters have a lot of hate. And so do "conservatives."
I guess "Trump voters" is going to become a really special club any minute.
And it'll last for, oh four months. And then it will dissolve into some other absurd anxiety and anger.

6
A large number, including important conservative pundits (former Republicans) have actually joined the Libertarian Party since May or June, expecting this Republican scenario and fiasco. Believe it. And they are proudly announcing their new affiliation.
Lyin' Donald. Who believes this buffoon about anything? Sure, now he supports Ryan and McCain, but he didn't two days ago. I suppose this sudden shift will be interpreted as Trump finally coming down to the political norm, but exactly who or what do Trump's endorsements help? Himself? Ryan? McCain? The GOP? Ryan I expect is very pleased with himself, but given that he has the principles of a sea slug, I write him off having any political or human morality at all; but if McCain or Ayotte were to actually reject Trump's endorsement--now, that would be meaningful.
87
Spot on plus a chuckle or two.
4
If there is a God, and if He (or She) is just and merciful and loving, then the rout on Election Day of these deplorably unprincipled and thoroughly unpatriotic beings, Trump, Ryan, McCain -- and every single other House and Senate Republican up for re-election -- will be so complete, humiliating, and devastating, that it will leave no doubt in the minds of anyone who cares to pay attention that we want nothing whatsoever to do with their sorry ilk for as long as there is breath in our lungs and blood in our veins.
280
From your mouth to God's ears.
10
Yeah, then maybe Ryan will have to get a REAL job for once in his sorry life and see how REAL, ordinary Americans live and try to get by.
And McCain can go home to Arizona and get reacquainted with is family. Ahhh, what to do now with all those wife's millions????
And McCain can go home to Arizona and get reacquainted with is family. Ahhh, what to do now with all those wife's millions????

After with typical grandiosity in extolling how he's the self-funding anti-establishment candidate, The Donald in Green Bay, WI with a non-Pavarotti, sotto voce, note-reading, unenthusiastic hostage-sounding lament "endorsed" three very establishment candidates. Of course, in an equally tone-deaf moment his handlers neglected to mention Wisconsin's own endangered senator, Ron Johnson. Just another incomplete pass and fumble in the land of the cheese-heads. I guess the Pack is not yet back.
23
dignity is so 18th century
24
It's a conundrum, are you insulted because Trump didn't endorse you or relieved? Since we are dealing with clowns, I'll quote Monte Python:
"Run Away! Run Away!"
"Run Away! Run Away!"
20
All of this discussion about what type of candidate Trump will be in the general election and whether he can appropriately pivot in a way that the establishment deems satisfactory--only one pivot foot, Donald!--and I can't help but be reminded of the old David Foster Wallace quote, "Of course, you end up becoming yourself."
The Donald is 70 years old and has lived the better part his life in a highly public way. His character and his history of behavior is just a google search away for anyone that wants to see it, so I won't recount it here. This last week of erratic behavior has not revealed anything about The Donald, only about others. This is who The Donald is. There is no changing it now, even if he reads from a script for the occasional night, and gives others the impression that there "intervention" is working.
But for the likes of Ryan and his ilk, the question becomes how this "experiment" ends up defining them, because it will one way or the other. You end up becoming yourself.

Won't do any good...the GOP is dead. The insincerity, hypocrisy, and lunacy are the comedy before the tragic ending.
34
The GOP is indeed dead. Conservative voters have rejected it. Buh-bye Jeb! and McCain.
But conservative voters are still out there by the millions. They don't really care about abortion or gay marriage; they want common-sense gun control and fiscal frugality. They do not want to grow, fund or invest in more government because of the ludicrous fraud and waste.
They hate free trade and trickle-down. They want immigration to be legal and regulated. They oppose H1B visas.
The candidate who can end the fraud, waste, unfair trade and illegal immigration will capture these voters and will spawn a new party and will change American politics for decades at least. But it won't be a Democrat and it probably won't be Trump.

Genuinely curious here. What "ludicrous fraud and waste"? Are you referring to military spending or something else?
If we would spend some tax dollars on updating our accounting and auditing systems and personnel, fraud, redundancies and waste would be easier to identify and eliminate. No group would benefit more from that than our military and veterans.

Wisconsin Speaker of the House Robin Vos got his wish. Trump endorsed Ryan. And Trump endorse McCain and Ayotte. Now they have an even heavier albatross around their necks.
24
So the dapper Don has spoken. "Nothing personal, it's just business."
8
What a pathetic excuse for a man.

If ANYONE thinks this is a “pivot” to “acting” presidential...give him 24 hrs.
Unless his family locks him a closet without access to a phone or TV he will be tweeting something horrible soon.
The transcript of the Washington Post “attempting” to interview Trump a few days ago sums up this small brained male. FIVE TIMES in the interview he saw himself on TV and ..wandered away from the subject at hand...and began talking about himself--“14 million primary voters...most ever....Look at my ratings!!...”
The editor REPEATEDLY had to answer his questions for him, bring him back to line of questions.
The WaPo commenters are notoriously cynical in comments but here they felt sorry for the editor!
Here is the transcript of that interview:

It took me a while to figure out what that transcript reminded me of. Then I remembered. Many years ago, in a college psychology class, I read a transcript of an interview with a schizophrenic patient. The patient's responses were "word salad," largely incoherent rambling featuring phrases that were constantly repeated.
Word salad. That's what the transcript of Trump's interview reminded me of.

Thanks for the link. Now I need a drink. Or a lobotomy.

Addendum to WaPo interview..
Basically the WaPo script of its interview with Trump went:
Editor: Do you plan on apologizing to a Gold Star...
Donald interrupting as he sees his orange face on TV: “I had the most primary votes EVER in the previous Republican primaries--14 million! They love me...I have the highest ratings..no one could bring crowds like I do... SQUIRREL!! You know I was viciously attacked by the terrible, terrible--SQUIRREL!!”...”Oh I’m on TV---news programs would be nothing if it weren’t for me...SQUIRREL!!

Pointless.

I'll give him this his his hair looked better today and he stayed horribly on script (reading notes from some paper), like a first time speech giver. haha..

So? What? This is what...the 53rd time he has done "the right thing" a dollar short and a day late? Why is this even covered? Dennis the menace, also, only responded to calls when his mother sounded mad enough.
He was still Dennis the menace.
Donald Trump is exactly what he appears to be. Period. Full stop.

Exactly. Believe people when they tell you who they are. KA

Speaking of menace..what's that movie, "Dont be a menace to society" ? For Donald, he's already accomplished that. Imagine if he were prez!

This is Trump’s way of desperately staying in the news.
On a day when the U.S. employment numbers looked great, no unexpected news from ISIS, a smooth kick off to the summer Olympics, Trump needed something positive going into the Sunday talk shows
If history is any indicator, the unhinged part will happen on Monday (or sooner)!!

"U.S. employment numbers looked great"
They did not. They remain unchanged, in rates, in total numbers of unemployed, and in long term unemployed. The job creation was at or below replacement, as students arrived and elderly retired. It was 255,000 jobs, and we need near 300,000 just to break even.

Not sure how Ryan and McCain feel after being endorsed by Trump.. Proud or Ashamed..
167
Owned
13
Uncomfortably relieved, with a tinge of shame, one hopes.
4
If they had any guts, they would feel a need for a long hot shower.
10
"The reversal was [not] an attempt to heal Mr. Trump’s split with the G.O.P.’s top leaders.", it was an attempt to keep the news focused upon Mr. Trump.
No doubt Speaker Ryan will appreciate Mr. Trump's endorsement as much as he appreciated endorsing him... "Daddy, what did you do before the war? I bet you were brave and helped everyone."
Sigh...

I can only imagine what the seasoned politicians--to the extent you can call them that--feel about being "endorsed" by a know-nothing, pathological lying interloper.
6
The damage is permanent. Just like after Dan Quayle misspelled "potato" and then fell victim to Lloyd Bentsen's "I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine, and you're no Jack Kennedy" piercing during the vice-presidential debate, Trump is toast, done in righteously by a Muslim-American. The only thing that could make Trump's downfall sweeter is if the Khan family were found to be half Mexican.
332
Memo to Blue Ridge Boy: My die-hard Republican and Korean War father told me this morning that Don the Con's trashing of the Islamic war hero and his family was the final straw for him! When Don the Con is losing my father's vote, he is toast!
9
Bush/Quayle won that election, didn't they? Let's not forget that.
"The only thing that could make Trump's downfall sweeter .." is if he takes down the entire republican party with him.
3
He had to actually read these endorsements off of a piece of paper provided by his panicked staff while they're shouting "DO IT, THE SHIP IS SINKING, DO IT" .
120
On Tuesday Mr Trump was not there. What changed between Tuesday and today to bring him there? Sinking poll numbers?
136
Manafort has him locked in a closet without his cell phone. They finally found a stunt double.
30
So basically Trump got bored playing his immature little temper tantrum game. Got it.
62
No they put the fear of losing in him. With his inability to tell fact from fiction he'll be off his leash in a New York minute.

Well aren't we lucky Trump is trying to behave. It is such a strain on this man. I can't imagine how Speaker Ryan feels right now - likewise McCain. His most recent criticism of Hillary Clinton, that she is "unhinged" is, of course, a repeat of what people have been saying about him. It's like the old children's taunt, "I know I am but what are you?" Trump is a ridiculous man with the mind of a spoiled child.
419
Trump, Ryan, McConnell - they are all cut from the same cloth. They have nothing but contempt for the American electorate. Trump endorses Vladimir Putin and Saddam Hussein, it is not much of a stretch for him to endorse Paul Ryan.
462
You have to admit this is a genius move. You see, had he endorsed him right away, there would be no media circus around it. But now that he waited to give his endorsement, much like Paul Ryan waited to endorse him, the folks in the media are scrambling to give heir opinions on the matter. This is an excellent way to get more free publicity from a presidential candidate that has outperformed and under-spent his opponent. Wouldn't you agree? - glrosario
22
Would Americans vote for someone who reverses himself as often as Trump has? He is so changeable, this I doubt his mental stability. Who wouldn't?
15
Nice idea, but Trump is not capable of such machiavellian maneuvers.
And, to be honest, not all publicity is good publicity. Unless you think that taking a 5-10 point drop in the polls is desirable.

11
I think Trump was being his usual petty, vindictive self. He used Ryan's exact words, "just not yet ready to endorse". Trump's cheap attempt to slam Ryan & get even because Ryan hit Trump & Trump always hits back like a nasty 6th grade bully. Trump was wearing the muzzle tonight but I expect he will be back to normal soon.
11
After the week he's had, Trump would endorse a hydrant if he thought it would do him any good. For Ryan, I hope the air-kiss endorsement comes with a backbone.
141
Not sure this is good news for Ryan. Trump is in desperate free fall. It is Trump that benefits from this endorsement deal. We all know what he really thinks about Ryan and McCain. It is very sad to see what this con artist has done to the Republican Party.
237
With any luck, Trump just threw Ryan an anchor.
186
No, it is not sad to see what Trump has done to the Republican party! They deserve him.
11
Au contraire! I think it's great what he's doing to the Republican Party - he's ruining it!
12
Nonsense. Late. RNC manipulations. On principle, why would they accept his endorsement? And what good will this do now?
24
Too little, too late. He's a wolf being forcibly -- and unsustainably -- stuffed into sheep's clothing.
51
Today, Trump bent the knee to the GOP. He's probably back in his tower by now, simmering over this minor humiliation. Once his id hits a full boil, he'll erupt and get even.
694
Win or lose, he'll get even. You're right, that's his M.O. and in his DNA.
2
I could not disagree more strongly. Trump is gloating over having made Ryan wait, in the same way Ryan made him wait. TIt-for-tat, nothing more. Like the narcissistic, drug-addicted Charlie Sheen, who was "always winning."
1
While your hero, a multi-felon and proven liar who just said she wants to further abuse the middle class with taxes laughs at the helpful idiots who give her the power to ruin them.
2
"As Donald Trump has said stupid things and been rude to so many people over the past year, I usually chalked it up to inexperience and the spotlight of an incredibly hostile press,” the speaker, Robin Vos, wrote. “But since the convention, his lack of judgment has got to concern even the most ardent Trump supporters.”
Say what? You mean the 'incredibly hostile press' that Trump uses for free PR, all the while feigning outrage that the media is biased against him and disgusting? Trump's post-convention lack of judgment? Where were you the past year? Only the details change, not the lack of judgment?
This is a perfect example of how the GOP's willful ignorance of Trump's incompatibility with the Presidency has gotten him this far.

What an honor for Senator McCain to receive the endorsement of a man who mocked his captivity. Ironic that the North Vietnamese couldn't break him, but this pathological narcissist could.
804
Ryan should overlook making any public thanks to him, be only pleased that he decided to.
2
come on he was younger then
1
I guess the best I can say is I hope the endorsement hurts Ryan in November.
296
Donald Trump may be trying to make amends, but he can't make himself prepared for one of the most complicated jobs on the planet. I would like the New York Times to ask each of the people who have sat in the Oval Office if they think either of the two candidates are up for the job. That would be an interesting story.
38
President Obama has publicly stated be believes dRump not fit to fill the chair in the Oval Office.
It is still three months until the actual election, I don't question if dRump is qualified mentally and if he has the ability, I question if he will even be running in two months...

12
Seriously? it wouldn't be worth the effort to ask former presidents. Party politics and big money will skew to Clinton.
Good thing money can't vote.
Good thing money can't vote.
Ummmm, the current, very competent occupant has loudly and clearly endorsed Hillary Clinton.
Obviously, she is up for the job.
Or have you been asleep lately?

10
I'm enjoying the spectacle of Trumpzilla's implosion. I hope that the stretch from now until November is filled with many more episodes of insanity, lunacy, and plain ol' crazy. I expect that Trump will emerge not only defeated politically but also personally.
85
I certainly hope so, but after watching the videos of other, equally unstable and obviously enraged Trump voters, I have to wonder even more if mental illness isn't rampant in this country.
If a mentally unstable political candidate can get this far, I find myself contemplating how many of the electorate are so unhinged themselves that they accept Trump's irrational mood swings and tantrums as ordinary adult behavior.

3
Once again, Mr. Trump's instincts are just plain wrong. As always, far too belligerent than necessary or appropriate. The fact that he can, on rare occasions, be convinced by adults in the room to backtrack or correct his statements, should be small comfort to anyone considering casting a vote for him.
23
Yawn. Has as much meaning as a LinkedIn endorsement.
355
That's not fair to LinkedIn.
3
What an exciting development!...Snore.
80
Sincere?
Nyet.
Nyet.
89
Dah, Komrade.
4
Could the "incredibly hostile press" be the same ones who simply repeat what Donald said that day? And does anybody really think this means he WANTS Ryan, Mccain, and Ayotte to win, or will do anything to help them? From their perspective, doubtless the biggest help he could give will be to spend his time in the state next door.
27
Let the Games begin! I'm sick, sick, sick of Trumpimania.
40
MEMO to Sen. John McCain: Show the world your integrity by refusing to accept Trump's half-hearted endorsement. You don't need it anyway.
Win or lose your re-election campaign on your own merits.
I — and other Arizona voters — would rather support a man of principle, regardless of party affiliation, instead of a wimp selling out to a slime like Donald Trump.

Trump owes McCain an apology for the stupid comment "I prefer people that did not get caught" as if McCain had a choice in the matter.
McCain has been serving America since Trump was crawling up his mother's gilded skirts. I agree that McCain should tell Trump he does not accept his endorsement and should not care about any AZ voter that bases his vote for McCain on whether Trump endorses him or not.
Then again I understand this is politics and McCain wants and needs to do anything he can to get reelected. Ugh how ugly.

It doesn't matter if Donald Trump cynically endorses John McCain or not. Arizona should do the right thing and deny John McCain another term in the Senate. Isn't it time Arizona had a fresh new face in the Senate already? John McCain also desperately tried to parlay his Senate experience into several failed attempts at the Presidency. John McCain's time has simply come and gone.
7
An endorsement from trickster Trump? Sounds disgusting...
53
Mr. Trump endorsed Speaker Ryan and Senators McCain and Ayotte, speaking slowly from prepared notes. However, he later went off the rails, calling Hillary Clinton both unhinged and weak, adjectives that are in some tension with each other. As David Brooks wrote in his most recent column, it is Mr. Trump who is unraveling, with his word salads, his dissociated thinking, and his increasing paranoia. If his poll numbers keep dropping, these symptoms will likely increase. And if he looses the election and no longer covered in the media, he is likely to fall into a serious depression.
295
Kathleen Parker, in the Washington Post, wrote about her experiences with brain injuries. Trump's behavior, she said, is quite reminiscent of the worst of hers during recovery.
10
I particularly liked with way he read the lines (poorly) that the election wasn't about him. Then went on and on about his victories in the primary and how no one has ever, ever seen anything like it. Then, he stepped all over his new message to rehash the crying baby story. And no, Donald, it wasn't at all like you described.
31
First stage dementia ...

"She is pretty close to unhinged,” Mr. Trump said, criticizing Mrs. Clinton’s immigration and foreign policy positions, in particular her relationship with Iran.
Actually, it is Trump who's unhinged. He has rekindled his flirtations with Putin, even asking for Russian espionage of his opponent; turned a gold-star family into a chance to disparage Muslims; and spread a baseless, false conspiracy theory about money for hostages. And those are just the most recent developments!

Don't leave out "the election is rigged". Why does the media allow him to get away with these outrageous comments? When he brings out his "some people say..." the press should force him to say who "some people" are.
As for Hillary being weak, can you imagine for one moment how unhinged Trump would react if all the accusations, committee's interrogations, and conspiracy's were laid on him like they've been laid on Hillary?

I'm not even sure those *are* the most recent. But, then, I haven't checked Twitter for a few hours.

Trump called HRC "pretty close to unhinged."
I think that's called Projection.

730
Or transference.
22
Review how he projected his faults on all the other candidates and criticizers.
6
His entire campaign has been one long, twisted, psychotic projection.

Speaker Ryan, is this it, some high point, where you've been endorsed by a racist, misogynistic, nuke happy, blind to the Constitution businessman of questionable practices? Can you really believe that you are putting our country first?
Those questions go double for Senator McCain.
Those questions go double for Senator McCain.

This is likely McCain's last election, yet for the rest of his political life Ryan will be tarnished by his support for Trump. No one will remember his waffling: Ryan's opponents will only need to remind voters that Ryan stood behind Trump and thereby endorsed and agreed with Trump's positions (selectively banning religious groups; criticism of Gold Star families; alienating all but white male voters).
Amazing that Ryan cannot see beyond this one election and the impact his endorsement and support of Trump's positions will have on the rest of his career.

He read his comments thoroughly the whole time….eyes glued…at points, struggling.....as if he meant it?
This is the "intervention"….but will it matter now?

As. good Catholic, I'm a big believer in the Rapture and End of Times that voting for Donald Trump would bring to the world, but I'm just not there yet. I'm voting for Hillary.

You must go to a Baptist “Catholic” Church as Roman Catholics don’t see us as being lifted up to heaven on a one-way ticket.
Rather Catholics are being “welcomed home.”

Thank you very much. Please do more. Please explain your behavior to your fellow parishioners, either in church or in the parking lot. As you clearly realize, this is important.

congratulations on finding freedom
ive known many who were slaves their entire lives

Meaningless.

Let's hope that the damage stays done. One thing that Trump has leveraged very effectively is the incredibly short half-life of the public and the media as everyone looks for the next story rather than the complete picture.
176
I honestly hope that NO ONE is fooled by this new "kinder and gentler" Trump!
He is STILL THE SAME DONALD J. TRUMP that he has ALWAYS been!
He is STILL THE SAME DONALD J. TRUMP that he has ALWAYS been!
225
Exactly!!!! He sounded so fake when he was reading his endorsements! A little too late! Keep on acting a fool Donald....pleeze???? Yeah Hillary!
72
Trump threw a bone to the anti-establishment independents who lingered any doubts -- and showed that the tail now undeniably wags the establishment dog.
33
Ryan showed his lack of principle by sticking with Trump while, in the same breath, criticizing whatever racist/dictatorial/otherwise offensive statement Trump had come up with. Ryan has cast his lot with Trump, and may they sink together.

Republicans preach smaller government yet will bow and scrape to a wanna be mob figure in order to keep cashing their own government paycheck. Heaven forbid they aren't re-elected and had to go get a real job.
19
Now the tables are turning, and I hear the white underclass blaming everyone but themselves because they are out of work, on drugs, and lack the skills to compete. It's the Mexicans, the Muslims, the Blacks, globalization, the politicians--everyone but themselves are the sources of their misery.
The handout they are looking for is to kick everyone else out of the country to regain their token, unearned status.
