Guess I will never understand why authoritarian governments think that they can keep their people controlled indefinitely. Of course, should there be a revolution or massive change in leadership, there is no guarantee that another reconstituted authoritarian government takes control like what happened with the Arab "spring".
The Chinese government expressly declared this the "Chinese Century" where they will become the world's super power by the end of this century. China is a nightmare of an Orwellian state where free speech and advocating for individual civil liberties can get you swept off the street, imprisoned for a very long time and in some cases even killed. Rather than psychotic Muslim groups who declared war on western civilization, the Chinese government is the number 1 threat to our values and our nation, as well as the values held by the majority of Hong Kong citizens. We must pursue a new and aggressive policy that contains Chinese power by supporting the people and Southeast Asian nations that know the Chinese government the best.
We must also realize that our government allowed American corporations to enrich and empower China by moving manufacturing there. Why? American corporations bankrolled our politicians to look the other way while they made obscene profits from slave wage workers. That policy also destroyed the American middle class. American corporations must now be held responsible if they continue to act against our nation's common good and our security. After all, our nation gave birth to their corporate form.
It's time to contain a monster called China.

When you say Hong Kong would "rot", I'm pretty sure you mean "subdued by massive and brutal force". I guess it's a translation thing.
I doubt many of the so-called HK "democracy activists", as we called them
in US, care much about democracy or elect an HK executive. They would rather
to have a British governor at the top and forget about election. Maybe they
should petition the Chinese authority to appoint a British governor.

It is heart-breaking to see the "rot" that has come to Hong Kong, not because of autonomy, but its opposite--increased interference from the government (and Communist Party) in Beijing.
REPOST to correct errors... Sorry.
Zhang's visit to Hong Kong was an unmitigated failure... how else could one describe an event that required most of Hong Kong's police force (and likely a big contingent of "help" from security forces based in China) to secure?
The Communist Party's intransigence, paranoia and fear is killing Hong Kong. Unfortunately, nothing in what Zhang said publicly suggest that leaders in Beijing are even prepared to admit that they might not have all the answers.

Political protests are often the result of economic collapse. Hong Kong's and Taiwan's economic growth during the 20th century was predicated on their roles as 'gatekeepers' to the mainland, processing financial transactions and affecting end-stage manufacturing, respectively. The entire PRC is now accessible to the world's companies and has become the world's largest domestic market. Hong Kong now survives as a conduit of capital flight from the mainland. Taiwan feverishly and futilely struggles to maintain its diminishing status as the sweatshop managers of Guangdong.

So much for coming to HK to "listen" to people. Protecting their party and their power is the unmistakable message. The only thing left will be to do that without losing the public relations battle. You gotta admire the determination of Joshua and his cohorts. Do the majority of HK people not want to help him?

Please dont sell this misleading info anymore. Yet, there are people in HongKong believes this city can become an independent political body in the future. However, most of Hong Kong People dont buy that. Yes they will protect, yes they will keep saying I am not Chinese. But take a gun and fight for real... sorry, I doubt.
The majority of Hong Kong People never cut off the connection with China, which made Hong Kong People will not become a new ethnicity.
Please dont forget, seventy years ago, Japanese Imperial Army took over Hong Kong in 3 weeks only, while there were tens of thousand British Army. If that day comes, those separatists have no chance at all, but we, most of Hong Kong people, will surfer because of their Day Dreams

You couldn't have posted this if you were home in China. Doesn't that tell you something?

Actually, have you guys think about what will happen once China drops her GFW?? Six-Seven Hundred Million people will conquer all social networks, then Hong Kong people and Taiwanese's voices will be outnumbered... Everything in this world have two sides, when you, the western, think Free Speech will change the RED CHINA, but once you unleash the power, it also change the rest of the world.
By the way, the people in Mainland China knows the world very well, not like 40 years ago anymore.

So be it. Drop the GFW and let's find out.

Mr. Zhang is right that, if Hong Kong were to become more independent, something would rot, but he was wrong that it would be Hong Kong. It would be the ability of China's leaders to maintain their tight grip on mainland China and its people.
Fifty years is a long time in terms of a human lifetime, but, in the perspective of China as an institution, it less than one percent of China's history of more than 5000 years. The fifty years of Hong Kong's guaranteed greater freedoms will pass quickly in institutional terms. Hong Kong's leaders know that all too well. In fact, they are already experiencing increasing Chinese pressure to bring Hong Kong more in line with the rest of China, and we are barely past the halfway point.
The US and China are currently on a collision course in many areas as China seeks to have a more dominant role in world affairs. Hong Kong should be one of those areas where we aggressively confront China by supporting the desire of most of Hong Kong's people to keep their enhanced freedoms beyond 2047. This would also be fully consistent with our values. More important, it would help bring balance to China's aggressive efforts to control large areas of the South China Sea and require China to give more attention to domestic matters.
