It hasn't been Coney Island for me since they closed Shatzkin's Knishes. Better for my heart, but not for my soul.

Coney Island is very wonderful!
I love Coney Island.
Today's story made me want to go there again.

“The Glory of Love, give it to me now,
the Glory of Love to see you through.
Oh, I'm a Coney Island Baby now.
(I'm a Coney Island baby, now)
I'd like to send this one out for Lou and Rachel
and all the kids and P.S. 192.
(Coney Island Baby)
Man, I'd swear, I'd give the whole thing up for you.”

I'm wondering who and how the number of visitors is computed (guessed?) We visit several times a year but do not count ourselves as tourists. The primary reason for visiting is to see relatives. Sometimes we do stay in NY lodging, but still don't consider that "tourism", even though we wer most recently only two blocks from Times Square.

And, as for Nathan's, I do make it a practice to get at least one or two on every visit. The way they are cooked and the snap are unequaled by any other dog. Sometime we will make it to Coney Island to experience the primary location.

For the tastiest in Manhattan, you've got to try the hot dogs at Schnipper's across from the Port Authority. Consistently brilliant! (Nathan's at its best remains the best I've had in Brooklyn.)

Going to Coney Island on a nice day in the off-season reminds one of something most New Yorkers take for granted: just how wonderful it is and how lucky we are to have such a place you can get to for the cost of a subway ride.

And we can also thank New York City for preventing Joe Sitt (Thor Equities) from turning our Coney Island into another Condominium-playground for the rich and elite...THANK YOU!!!!!

Life cannot be lived without Nathans hot dogs. I'm a vegetarian, and consume no meat---except that I occasionally have a Nathans dog. And I feel no guilt or confusion over it. A Nathans frank is a gift from the gods, which no mere mortal should ever refuse. Simply moderate the consumption and avoid all other meats.

Born in Bay Ridge, I would surely be turning my back on my heritage if I turned my back on those wonder dogs!

I grew up on Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island, and it was my pleasure to get up early in the morning and go to the beach in the summer before the tourists and get my swim and sun.

In the evening the boardwalk was cool and lovely. In the winter, walking the boardwalk was brisk, and I could see the waves crashing and no one would be around to bother me. Quiet Coney Island indeed.

I was born in Borough Park, grew up in Bushwick in the '60s but would spend a few weeks each summer at my grandmother's home in Bensonhurst, from which I could walk to Coney Island. Spent all day, every day at the beach with family and friends, went on the rides, stayed indoors at Steeplechase when it rained and, of course, ate at Nathan's all the time. It was just the greatest time. Life was never grander. Even on occasional visits when Coney Island was really run down and decrepit, there'd always be a lineup of cars with out-of-towners and old-timers stopping by just for the hot dogs. I'm glad Coney Island has come back.

Such wonderful memories for me here! I grew up in Luna Park and actually found the hot dogs hit and miss at Nathan’s, depending on the experience of the cook, but the french fries were always the best there are!

Tune of “The Oldest Established” (Good Old Reliable Nathan)

Why, it's good old delectable Nathan’s!
Nathan’s, Nathan’s, Nathan’s on Surf!
If you're anxious for hot dogs, they’re open real late
If you’re on a diet, try the fried chicken plate

But the pig-outs that stand out at Nathan’s
And I swear it ain’t only talk
Are the finest reported, oily but magic
French fries in New Yawk

There’ll be hot-dog eaters everywhere, everywhere
Noisy kids and parents everywhere.
But if you get there real soon now
You avoid the crowds of June now - there
(Though you won’t find many other open stands
We say, do you really care)

With the menu provided by Nathan’s
Have some hot dogs, then take a walk
Then come back for the finest, oily but magic
French fries in New Yawk
