Fans recognized years ago that the wide receivers and fullbacks were prima donnas who needed a huge self-image to fight through the physical challenges. But we have always expected the more cerebral quarterbacks to be steps removed from that never-been-here-before attitude.
And, Cam HAS been here before! That's the sad part. He HAD tasted success but is still overwhelmed into silence and a parka with the top over his offended face. Cam is Better Than This.

While it was a solid defensive game by both squads it was a dull slow game. And yes the defenses shutdown the offenses but once Denver had the lead and not trusting Peyton they just sat on it and were content to 3 and out and punt. That's not entertaining. 3rd and 8 and their running more often than not. Ugly. And then you have the Panthers who looked great all season and looked so bad here. Yes Denver gets credit for a lot of it but the penalties, bad clock management and the end of the half, sloppy turnovers. Those who pointed out that the Panthers had the easiest schedule in the NFL are grinning today. And Cam's the league MVP? One game shouldn't make it difference in a season unless you shy away from the ball with Superbowl on the line. Might as well fake an injury. They should strip him of the award and give that one to someone with more heart than charm.
Good defenses tend to win superbowls. Super Bowl 50 was a classic defensive game; the offensive miscues were caused by defensive pressure and the inability to run the ball. Until the end, the outcome was always in doubt, and the game intense rather than dull. The Broncos defense was dominate here just as it was in the AFC Championship Game against the Patriots.
2
The Broncos defense was healthier than it had been all year. I don't think any offense in the league can move the ball on them when they're healthy. The Broncos offense has been lame all year but managed to do just enough to avoid losing. It is limited by Peyton Manning's inability to throw the ball with any zip, and an offensive line that can't open holes for the running game. That needs to change next year. Peyton needs to retire obviously. Osweiler can handle the QB job if the Broncos can sign him to a new contract. And the Broncos need to find some offensive linemen.
Personally I am very impressed by this Super Bowl. It is an argument that the essence of all football is defense. In a way, it would have been an even better game if Denver hadn't scored that second touchdown and the teams' evenly matched defenses had left the victory to special teams. But I am satisfied with what I got.
1
I don't get how this was a "storybook ending" for Manning. That would've been him actually DOING something in the game that contributed to the team's winning. I was pulling for him to win a 2nd ring, but he would've also won it - and contributed just as much - if he sat on the bench.
1
Denver's defense outplayed Carolina's offense & defense. And managed to get Newton clearly rattled & frustrated. I knew the game was over by the middle of the 1st quarter just by watching the body language of the Carolina offense. And then Newton does is spoiled brat sore loser act at the press conference. No class in that boy...he needs to take notes from Russell Wilson, Warren Moon, Kevin Durant on how to act like a man in a man's game.
1
It was a classic game. Two top rated defenses. Two good quarterbacks, one young, athletic and brash and the other old, experienced and determined facing off. Both were pressured by the defense but in the end Peyton performed better at the crucial times and the Denver defense carried the day.
2
Many elder folks in Colorado have Post Traumatic superbowl syndrome.

Though I'm not a big fan of the NFL, I've always liked and followed Peyton Manning. After I watched the game that he entered late, carrying the Colts to the play-offs, I started tuning in. I was prepared to switch by half-time since the Panthers were so heavily favored and I'd read so much about their star 26 year old quarterback. The outcome kinda reminded me of the movie 'Any Given Sunday,' where the aging quarterback has to give up his starting position to the hotshot newcomer; yet, in the clutch, it's clear that the leadership and steadiness of nerve that comes with years of experience sometimes matters more than a single person's talents, no matter how great. I'm sure Cam Newton has other Super Bowls in his future; and no question that the Colts awesome defense won the game... but for now, I'm celebrating the triumph of age over youth ; )
btw... did anyone else think the commercials were kind of 'meh?' Lots of celebrity faces, elaborate plotlines and 'noise,' but nothing memorable, heartwarming or incredibly funny.

I really enjoyed last night's Super Bowl game. I used to live in Colorado, where I became a Bronco fan, and, once a Bronco Fan, always a Bronco Fan.
Even listening to the French commentators (quite different from their American counterparts, and I would not say better), and staying up until 5:30 a.m. to watch the game, did nothing to dampen my enthusiasm.
Normally, Super Bowl games, to me, are excrutiatingly dull affairs, as if the players are moving through molasses. Even the ads and half-time do not help.
But last night's game was exciting and close. Both teams made mistakes, but that only served to increase the tension and enliven the dynamics of the game.
The author of this article clearly saw this game through a different lens than I, because I enjoyed it immensely. The errors make the game more interesting, and kept the score close.
Cam did not seem too sportsmanlike at the end--a little sulky, but Jordan Norwood of the Panthers made up for that. And if it is Peyton's last Super Bowl, what a way to go out.

I believe comments re: the sub par entertainment value of this super bowl are unfair. It was a 'clinic' on defensive football put on by the Broncos.
4
This article represents a classic, shallow interpretation of a professional football game. One would think someone writing for the times would have a deeper understanding of such a complex event than... Gee, the offenses didn't run up and down the field so this was a disappointing game. Fact is, this narrow and unsophisticated view represents a shared lack of perspective that made so many both casual observers and professional, so-called experts completely whiff on who would win this game and how. Hopefully this game will help football watchers understand better that defenses win games and given this is true, those who watched Super Bowl 50 witnessed one of the great performances in professional football history as the Bronco's defense dismantled a team over-rated by hype and lacking the maturity and grit to win an extremely challenging contest.
12
Dismantled? Did you look at the stat line? The Broncos forced key turnovers (one which never should have happened had a call been ruled correctly) and that was, ultimately, the difference in the game. The Panthers (who got more than 300 yards in offense), held the Broncos to 194 yards, lowest ever for a Super Bowl-winning team. By your definition, they got dismantled too. They were able to cash in on Panther mistakes. It was not even close to one of the "great performances" in football history.
And I feel compelled to weigh in this one more time, to respond to these comments bashing Bill Pennington's story. I am a football fan. I have Sunday Ticket and watch MANY games, every Sunday of the season. I have watched the last 46 Super Bowls. I can tell a good game from a mediocre game or a bad one. Bill is accurate in his description of this game: it was grinding and lackluster. The AFC Championship Game, also a defensive struggle with just a few more points scored, was spectacular. This game was diminished by the turnovers, penalties, the mostly-shoddy play from BOTH quarterbacks, and bad officiating. I'm glad some Times readers managed to find it thrilling, but going back the past nine seasons, it's the second-worst Super Bowl after the blowout of two years ago.

Will, you got it totally right. No mention by Pennington of Phillips' great defensive plan or of Demarcus Ware (and the amazing Ware-Miller duo). A really disappointing article for the Times; I've always been agnostic on Pennington, but this piece was just awful -- and highly judgmental, lots of snark. I have no idea what game he was watching.
1
Pennington is a jerk. Success in PRO FOOTBALL does not rest on one man, their are 10 more players on the field. I started watching in 1947 and saw all the great teams and their quarterbacks. They celebrated their wins, regardless of who made the greatest contribution.

Not a direct quote from Manning. He used the word Budweiser not beer and said he wanted to thank the man upstairs. Not a direct quote but NYTimes puts in quotations so it is perceived to be. Makes me wonder how more important quotes are editorialized.
3
Actually, Manning did say he was going to drink a lot of "beer" but, in no less than two blatant, frankly shameless displays of product shilling he did identify said beer as Budweiser. How he failed to mention Papa Johns in the same sentence is beyond me.... And, why not Coors? If your taste, er, buds lean to swill, at least pick one made in your team's state.
Bud claims (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/14737625/budweiser-delighted-says-peyt... that it did not fork out an extra wad to Manning, so I'm just going to have to swallow the baffling notion that for Peyton beer and Bud are one and the same.

Budweiser is manufactured in Colorado.
Manning deserves the attention he's getting because of his illustrious career. But he was a bit player yesteday. 13/23 141 yds., 0 TD's, 1 Int. The Broncos won the Super Bowl despite Manning, not because of him. All this talk about Manning going out on top is misleading. He'd be going out as a much-diminished player who rode a great defense to victory. It's not so much that Manning won his second Super Bowl. It's more like the Broncos defense won the game, and Manning was along for the ride.
3
Football is a team game. I semi-jokingly have advocated eliminating individual statistics in team games because they are mostly meaningless. Does a QB rack up passing yards without great receivers? Does a RB go for 2000 without a great line? Manning won by not making the big mistake and knowing his limits.
1
Peyton Manning is an insufferable Republican.
4
Denver had a great defensive front and scheme. Carolina had a very good front and scheme. Denver had an all time weak offensive line. How pretty is a game with this set up going to look? Not very. No QB in the NFL with a plantar fascia injury in back of this offensive line is going to look good. No quarterback. Not Wilson, not anyone else. There was little run blocking all year and a stout line like Carolina's was just going to tee off. And so they did. Denver's just teed off a little better. Miller and Ware and Co.
3
all great young warriors need to learn the difficult lesson of never disrespecting their elderly opponents before, during, or after the battle, as, more often then not, they will defeat you.
gracious in victory.

you stand on the hallowed earth that they have left you.

Happy for Peyton, of course. He deserves the storybook finish. I do hope he is done though. I cringe when he is hit and he can't do his team much good anymore anyway.

I find it ironic that a defensive legend in Vaughn Miller was instrumental in a major upgrade to the legacy of arguably the greatest quarterback in NFL history:
- First QB to win a Super Bowl with two different teams
- First QB to win 200 games
- He goes from a 1-2 Super Bowl record to a 2-2 record which also means he's got a better record than bro Eli who has just as many wins but 2 fewer appearances.

Sorry, but Super Joe Montana is still the greatest.

You're on point
I liked the singing sheep although I don't get the point in having a truck bed with built-in radio. And you had to love those galloping dachshunds!!
The theory that Cam was afraid to go after that ball is ridiculous. He's not afraid to run into a pack of defenders. He obviously thought his lineman would get it and that he would just get in the way. And that could have been right and he had to make an instant decision. With hindsight I'm sure he would agree that he should have tried to get it.

Champions play to the very end of the game, for Manning it is probably to end of his career. Talented narcissists play as long as things are going their way, Newton. Here's hoping that Newton's maturity catches up with his momentous skills.

My reaction to the SB has always been to marvel at the absurd ersatz commercialization and glamorization of the game. That the game itself is interrupted so frequently by seemingly interminable commercials, and the halftime "show" gives both teams the opportunity to either rest or lose focus, has always seemed like a diminishing of the game.
I enjoyed the Bronco defense mashing Carolina's offense, though, and I understand Las Vegas took some hits. There's an interesting story this morning noting how head referee Clete Balckman's crew is 6-0 when working Bronco games. They flagged Carolina twice as often as Denver, and I did see some egregious fouls ignored by the refs. Just another NFL game, as far as the lousy officiating goes.

I didn't watch the game because, well, you know, it's a sport that destroys the bodies and brains of men.
But I heard about the childish antics of Cam Newton after the game, how he acted like a four-year-old who lost at Monopoly and then ran crying to his room.
What's worse, though, are two things. One, Peyton plugging Budweiser, a company he owns stock in. First, Bud is one of the most awful beers in the world. Second, he mentioned his family and Bud in basically the same sentence! This guy uses the world's biggest stage to sell Bud. What a human being.
Furthermore, the writer of this article misquotes Manning, replacing "Budweiser" with "beer." What happened to journalistic standards, NYT?

In a subsequent interview, Manning did refer to "beer" generally, not to any specific brand.
For a guy who didn't watch the game, because, well, you know, you have such high moral standards, you sure seemed to soak up the post game hoopla. Your trash talk about both QBs was quite informative. You must hate ballet, too, because it's a sport that destroys the bodies of boys and girls. As for beer, you must be the guy on TV who drinks XX, that is, when you do drink beer. Have a wonderful day.
That's a nice explanation except he used the name of the beer maker in the quotation cited, so again, where's the NY Times' standards?
Nice defensive game. Boring but nice.
Only one concussion?
Three images that remain: Cam Newton, after his 4th quarter fumble, towering over his subjects scrambling for the ball. Cam Newton, sulking, at the press conference.m Akim Talib's infectious joy in the post-game on ESPN.
PS Joe Montana is still the greatest. Peyton needs to retire. The best that you can say about his performance is that he didn't get in the way of his defense.

Montana great indeed! But for this old-timer, seeing Lynn Swann carrying the trophy to the stage was priceless.
1
I actually enjoyed the game because I wanted Denver to win. There were a lot of errors, but that's what good defense does. I was sorry to see Cam be a poor looser and glad to see Denver's defense get the most credit for the win. Cam is young and I'm hopeful will learn from this defeat and be more humble and a better person for it...and maybe a better player too.
3
I read complaints that Manning mentioned Budweiser as the beer he would drink later. That is exactly the same as when winning QBs said they were going to Disneyland. Get over it, pro football is a giant entertainment business.
7
The game was pure garbage.
6
Bill Billiicheck, is that you?
6
Too many casual fans, apparently. I'm a Patriots fan, and thought it was a good game. I was kind of rooting for Denver, for Peyton's sake, but wasn't sure Denver's D could contain Cam Newton, and whether Carolina's healthy offensive line could do better than New England's patched-together line. Both were answered - it wasn't the O-line, it was Denver's pass rushers and man coverage. Cam will never have faced a defense like that, and will learn from it. One shouldn't be too hard on him - Brady - massively experienced, with 3 Super Bowl MVPs - couldn't manage to beat Denver with Edelman, Gronk, et. al., so it's not surprising Carolina couldn't.
But it was a riveting game. How many times have we seen one blown coverage, a kick return, or one spectacular play turn a close game? Late scoring drives as the defense tires and the running game kicks in? The ineffectiveness of the Denver offense (largely due to the effectiveness of Carolina's defense) meant Denver's defense was on the field a *lot* - could they sustain the effort? Would Carolina's offense find a weakness they could exploit? The announcers said it clearly - Peyton's job in the 4th quarter was to use as much clock as possible, don't turn the ball over, then give it back to the defense. In a close game like this, every play was crucial, and I for one watched closely to the very end.

The old adage proved true. Defenses win championships.
We had the number one and number two defenses in the Super Bowl and we got a defensive brawl. It was a great game for football purist. Two heavy weights duking it out.
Congratulations to the Denver D who have been doing it all year.

What a strange write-up. Mr. Pennington may have seen a "lackluster" game that "degenerated" with "horrible pass protection," but just about everyone else saw one of the all-time great defensive performances in a game that was close, and could have gone either way until the final two minutes (when the Bronco's D was so overwhelming that the Panthers threw in the towel). Von Miller had a night for the ages, and this article mentions him twice.
I suggest that the NYT send a correspondent to cover football who appreciates the game, and understand that it is played on both sides of the ball. Football is not just a series of offensive highlights, with flashy catches and touchdowns. It is a complex game of moves and countermoves, where half the men on the field are playing defense. Pennington seems to think defense is a flaw, the byproduct of an imperfect offense. Tellingly, Pennington claims Cam Newton "was responsible for two fumbles" -- no, Von Miller was responsible for those fumbles, sir.

In a surprising turn of events, Von Miller taught Newton that Force = Mass x Acceleration.

As exciting as watching a car rust!!!

"In the game’s opening minutes, Manning appeared just as confident and animated. He completed three of his first four passes, for a combined 46 yards. Manning’s early passing success set up slashing rushing attempts by Anderson, and soon the Broncos were at the Carolina 14-yard line."
More times than not, it only takes the first ten minutes of a Super Bowl game to predict it's outcome. In this case, Denver was aggressive and ready to take home the Lombardi trophy from the get go. Carolina was never in control and played like wet noodles - indecisive, limp and boring.
Folks may complain about the Broncos and Peyton Manning, but at the end of the day, he and they were the winners of the 50th Super Bowl because they played the better game. I have no idea who those Panthers were because I never saw those guys play that poorly before. I am embarrassed for them.
4
Newton showed his cowardice when he fumbled but stepped back instead of trying to recover his own fumble.
3
That "non-move" elicited a group "Whoa!" from the group I was with. Odd.
1
Cowardice? A bit of an overstatement, don't you think?
I am thinking that he may have thought that if he dove in he would get in the way of the other Panther who was already there trying to recover it. I don't think Cam Newton is a coward, just young & a bit inexperienced. I'm sure he & the Panthers coach & staff will look at that play a lot in the months to come.
Coach Ron Riveria and GM Gettleman are laughing hysterically. Because only they know their little secret. Neither expected this team to reach the playoffs let alone the Super Bowl. Maybe a call to Megatron will increase their expectations to actually being Super Bowl contenders next year.
1
I believe there's a Disney movie of this story in the future.
What a magical ending for "the Sheriff" and likely his last rodeo.
But this story is much more than a now legendary QB and his memorable audible, "Omaha". It's about a Bronco team having grit and a determination to win with the best defense ever.
Congrats to the Broncos!
Panthers we know you'll be back sometime in the future.

Why does everyone insist on calling it a "rodeo?" It's football, no?
Definitely a Cam fan but you don't get to be spoiled and sullen when things don't go your way. He is potentially a new face for the NFL and a tremendous talent - he needs to act like a leader.
He has a lot to learn and should look to how previous leaders responded in defeat. If he wants to be compared to a Brady, Manning, or even Wilson, a lot more maturity is required.

yeah, cam newton was a figment of our imagination last night. call him fig newton.

Telling was late in the Fourth Quarter, when Newton have fumbled being sacked, and he didn't bother to dive into the pile after the ball; instead he backed away.
But let's not forget that this was the Denver Broncos championship!

How did the mighty Panthers lose? They were predicted to win it all before the start of the season. Yes, they lost Kelvin Benjamin, but they have perennial Pro Bowlers in Ted Ginn Jr., Corey Brown, and Devin Funchess. They were the favorites to win the NFC South. Gotcha. Everything is an illusion, especially the fact that the Panthers were the favorites when you look at the Broncos' depth at defense. Even on offense, they have an abundance in weapons. The reason was that no one thought in a million years the prevailing dominance in their victories against the Seahawks and Cardinals. So 2 weeks later with the momentum yet diminished they play against a formidable force that was assisted with unscrupulous officiating. Now in football that combination can be broken, but you must be on your "A" game and they fell short. CAM is MVP because no one would have expected this team in the playoffs to begin with. For those questioning his commitment to his team are amateurish in their insight because this man has consistently ran through defenses despite absorbing punishment throughout his career. Sorry, weaklings Black people no longer look down at your feet to acknowledge your presence, so when you see a confident Black man stop reacting as such. CAM is the future and that "bad taste in his mouth" is going to make him DAB in your face for multiple years instead of just this season. The Panthers already won because it was not theirs to have in the first place.
60-70% of the NFL is African-American and no one else pouted. I am a white fan who has argued for decades against prejudices about the ability of African-Americans to be QB's. If you can fly P51's in combat, lead men in battle, run a basketball offense as a point guard, you can lead an NFL offense as QB. Newton's poor field performance is attributable to the Broncos D's ability to overwhelm an offensive line. They did the same to Roethlisberger and Brady, two shoe-in Hall-of- Famers. Cam Newton deserved the MVP and is in a position to rewrite the record book. If he does it will be because he drops the "Super" and focuses on the "man." I think he will and the upshot of his childish postgame behavior may be that fans and teammates alike may not be very tolerant of the Superman antics next year. He let a lot of people down after the game. Ray Lewis and Von Miller turned their lives and careers around after some poor off-field behavior. I will be rooting for Cam Newton to do the same.
1
Your second sentence notes that the Panthers were predicted to win it all before the season started. You say they were favorites for their division, They were even favorites to win the Super Bowl leading into the game itself. But later you say no one expected them to be there or win. Which is it?
1
WOW. Initially, I was being sarcastic (referring to the Panther WR corps as perennial Pro Bowlers). The point was that when K. Benjamin was injured many people did not expect this team to win the division let along the playoffs. It was wrong to have them as favorites when in actuality they were the underdogs (Vegas should be investigated), especially with a 2-week gap. For those saying that CAM and company failed do not know football since they were probably in the bottom tier to make the playoffs in the preseason.
Stingy as in overly frugal or like a bee? This has been bothering me all morning.
4
What is evident from this boring Super Bowl is that the real Super Bowl took place 2 weeks previous in the AFC championship game between the Patriots and the Broncos. Despite the Broncos awesome defense they were fortunate to survive.
5
Maybe the Patriots should've played harder in their last regular season game against the Dolphins. With home-field advantage they might have beaten Denver, but that's not how it played out. Although, with the way the Denver defense manhandled the Patriots O-line, it's far from a sure thing that they would've won in Foxborough, too. Denver hit Brady 20 times, more than any quarterback all season. He's a great quarterback, no doubt, but continual pressure will get to anyone.
I agree
Last night I learned from Payton Manning that "the man upstairs" throws back a few Buds while rooting for him.
6
What is wrong with this article is the same thing that was wrong with the Super Bowl broadcast last night; too much focus on brawn over brains and individual effort over team effort. How can you not enjoy the Broncos defensive strategy and Manning's willingness to stick to the run in the fourth quarter in order to rundown the clock and trusting his defense to keep the Panthers from scoring.
Unfortunately, the Super Bowl has become one big macho trip. The commercials were full of it and the halftime show was really full of it. It objectified masculinity as violent, brutal and muscle bounded. Now I know how women feel after Sport Illustrated releases it's annual swim suit issue! It's us also amazing that we allow the unsportsmanlike, self congratulatory, prancing that millionaire athletes do when they make even normal plays.
This was the final battle between the an old style of play that emphasizes the team, humility and coaching over a new style that emphasizes the pompous individual, and a cartoonlike obsession with superhero players. The Broncos won this year but I weep for the future of football.

Sorry Lombardi, the best offense is a good defense.

One of the most magnificent defensive performances I've ever seen in a Super Bowl — hats off to the spirited Broncos for relentlessly grinding it out and giving QB Peyton Manning a team win to savor. Gritty isn't pretty, but it's most certainly satisfying. Broncos are Champs!

“It’s been an emotional week. I want to go kiss my wife and my kids. And I’m going to drink a lot of beer tonight.”

He said Budweisers not beer. If you are going to use quote marks you can't change the quote without pointing that out.

Actually he said both in two different interviews. Nothing was changed here.
1
He said "Budweiser" in the immediate post-game interview, then said "beer" at the tropy presentation. So you are both right.
1
Actually, Manning did say "beer." Pennington got it right. Manning must have repeated his words later to someone else, and said "Budwieser" instead of "beer," and that's the one you heard.
Interesting contest......A few observations:
1.) Cam NEWTON
o He's truly gifted
o He's very young
o The Bronco's Defense made Mr. Brady look 'mortal' 2 weeks ago as well
2.) Peyton Manning
o Great Trent DILFER imitation last night...Definitely time to retire..

Lackluster game, Superman looked like a coward, and talk about sell outs extraordinaire! From Seth and Amy schilling for Bud (house payment due?) and holier than thow British actress highly and mightily calling the world bad names again for that very concerned corporate citizen, Bud!
2
Watching Cam Newton reminded me of watching Elway's first Super Bowl. Newton is a great player. He'll be back. But, I'm a Broncos fan. And am THRILLED that the Sheriff will ride off into a lovely orange and blue sunset.
13
A pretty sour group: NYT Monday morning quarterbacks dis the Super Bowl teams, halftime show, and the commercials. Sometimes a game is just a game. My critique? Lighten up a tad.
10
Don't dispair Newton, there is always Hollywood, or Modeling.
1
For all of you who opine that Cam Newton needs lessons in humility, here is my two cents. I'm an old white guy who views Cam as football's answer to Magic Johnson. He laughs, he smiles, he's nice to kids, he is joyful and exuberant. He is never in an oppoent's face, he never seeks to humiliate the other guy, he accepts penalties with decency. He is unlike many of his generation is these features of his character. He is also 26 and had a substandard game. He is the new face of the NFL. May it lose its reputation as the No Fun League.
14
He still behaved like a spoiled 10-year-old at the press conference.
3
I was skeptical regarding Bronco's ability to defeat a team whose record was
14 to one, always winning decisively!
The game turned out to be a defensive game that took poor Cam Newman by surprise and totally frustrated him; The only reason I wanted the Broncos to win was because of Manning's exemplary character, unlike most arrogant quarter backs that I have known...
I still think American football is the modern version of the Roman gladiatorial fights... It is time the US joins the global community for enjoying a more civilized 'football' such as Rugby and soccer instead.

Congrats to Denver on a great win. John Elway and Peyton Manning have turned this franchise around and rebounded well after the humiliating defeat against the Seahawks in 2014. A lot of the credit should go to Defensive coordinator Wade Philips who won his first Super Bowl after coaching for 4 decades. Something his father, Bum Philips who was also a distinguished coach could never do. And great performances from Von Miller and co. Maybe, social media should focus on positive stories like these rather than slagging off Cam Newton?

After reading the article about Kenny Stabler here, and coming to grips with so many players suffering CTE, I decided to not watch the game this year - first time in as long as I can remember. I'm glad I skipped it. I played football as a youth, and there is no way I would let my son play. I love my Patriots, but I think I'm done with the game.
2
Personally, I can "take it or leave it" when it comes to Super Bowl and football in general. The game has ceased being about professional athleticism and has morphed into this bloated "spectacle" of such ludicrous proportions it borders on the absurd. Super Bowl 50 was about as exciting as watching paint dry. For all the hype, quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Cam Newton were pretty much ineffectively negligible the whole game. The Broncos and the Panthers proved one thing for certain, when it comes to the Super Bowl you can still turn a "mediocre and incompetent" performance into a victory even by default. For me the worst part of Super Bowl 50 was when they paraded out all fifty of the game's inventory of MVPs, talk about a truly sorrowful bunch of arthritic looking "old geezers" hobbling their to the reviewing stand wearing their ill fitting suits and "hag dog" smiles on their faces. Pathetic!!! As far as the half time show; an overblown "dud". Oh well at the end of the day Super Bowl is what it is - Mo Money! Mo Money! Mo Money!
1
Wow ... I sure didn't see it like you do. I'm a new football fan & specifically am a Broncos fan. I was on the edge of my seat all during the game because I wanted a Super Bowl win for Peyton Manning. I thoroughly enjoyed the game, I loved that they brought out 5 decades (half a century) of MVP's - made me happy. The half time show was spectacular. I'm not a huge Coldplay fan - but I am becoming one. Their message of inclusion & love got me. And then Bruno Mars singing & moving to Uptown Funk & then here comes Beyoncé. How often does one get to see such a group. I thought it was one of the best halftime shows. Just my opinion :)
Peyton hung around long enough for the Bronco's to get his departing gift. This was not Elway willing himself in the end zone in 1997 against a superior Packer team. This is a guy who jus hung around long enough. What this guy was about in the last few years was motivated by money not legacy as his impromptu beer plug at the end of the game clearly indicates. Goodbye PM.
1
Victor doesn't know anything about football.
1
As Euripides put it, "The things men think will happen, do not happen. And that is what has happened here today." A rather Greek lesson for Cam Newton in the wages of hubris.
12
I think Newton let his immature/not ready for prime time side shine brightly. When winning, it was all smiles & laughs. When losing, he morphed into a sulking, unenergetic drag. He's got the talent to overcome that. This was probably a necessary thumping that will ultimately make him better. Carolina coach is a class act, a good man for Newton to overcome this. But... super happy Broncos won!
9
Now that the Payton Manning cheerleading is over maybe the mainstream sports media can get back to doing some journalism and investigate who was really using the growth hormones being sent to Manning's house.

While the Superbowl is lots of fun to watch, it's not so funny to those football players and their families who have suffered, are suffering, and in the future will suffer from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy -- CTE.
The US has many special days, weeks and months designated by Congress as national observances, for all sorts of remembrances and causes. Did you know that the Congress has authorized the President to declare every October 9th as Lief Erikson Day, and every December 17th as Pan American Aviation Day?
Conservative columnist George Will said in his latest column that Superbowl 50 “should be called the Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Bowl”. I agree, and also suggest that Superbowl Sunday be designated as National CTE Day, and that Congress fund it annually to pay for 30 second Superbowl ads informing the public of CTE's effects and dangers.
Each graphic ad should end with a roll call of those NFL players whose brains were examined the prior year, and found to have suffered from it, highlighting the dementia, suicides and the violent acts that CTE brain damage likely caused. (More than 100 NFL players' brains have so far been found to be so ravaged.)
An annual reminder of football's brain hazards during Superbowl Sunday should spur the reforms needed to return it to a sport safe for all to play.
Yeah, I know -- "Good luck with that!" Suggesting that women should vote had a similar reaction initially, but eventually…

Football cannot be totally safe to play. That's part of the point of it. If you want to get rid of it, there's an argument to be made for that though I'm in favor of people being able to make decisions for themselves. But waiting until "the reforms needed to return it to a safe sport safe for all to play" is just plain silly.
My wording was off by an "r". Good catch!
Of course, no sport can be totally safe to play. Walking isn't totally safe either. To make it clear. the reforms have to do with determining what rules and equipment need to change to reduce the incidence of CTE to make it safeR for all to play.

The Panthers caught some bad breaks. That Cotchery catch -non-catch- was big. Talib should have been ejected for that facemask tackle - his second personal foul of the game. The Broncos may have still won but it would have been a lot closer.
1
The only aspect more boring and disappointing than Carolina's performance were the commercials. Thank goodness Denver delivered a well-prepared and wonderfully executed game against the Panthers. I am not a fan of either team, but I do tend to support the underdog. Well done Broncos and Peyton Manning!
5
Good old fashioned defense usually wins championships.
4
Its a shame to see such a gifted athlete, break down, with any lack of humility, while sitting in front of the media, with that "hoodie" and not answer questions then run off like some street protester.
8
When I switched back to the game after watching Downton Abbey, the Broncos were still ahead. And they won! This despite the predictions of the NYT and the "line" that the Panthers would come out on top. Next year Bill Pennington and the NYT might consider asking Punxsutawney Phil to weigh in and predict the outcome.
5
Great game by the Denver defense. I was happy to see Peyton Manning win one more before he retires (he should retire). Was unhappy to see Peyton hawking lousy beer for money he doesn't really need after the game.
6
And he kissed that guy who sells really bad pizza.
4
I picked Denver because of their defense. But after the game, I really don't know. Panther turnovers, penalties, and the missed field goal speak of ineptitude. Newton had time, even if not a lot. The key question is whether the Bronco defensive backfield dominated the Panther receivers. TV doesn't show that. The Broncos have a couple of shut down cornerbacks. But Panther receivers are good enough to beat the rest of the defensive backfield from time to time. Newton threw 4 times to tight ends and twice to his running backs. Otherwise he targeted his wide receivers, playing into the Broncos strength. That seems like a mistake. But it 's hard to say unless you have a view of the coverage throughout the game. That's why I like to go to games during the regular season, when there are always some tickets that are affordable.
1
Can you really fault Cam Newton for not diving for the fumble?
In light of all we now know about the lasting consequences of concussion injuries? And given that the Denver Defense has admitted that they would have pounded and crushed Cam had he gone for the fumble (which he certainly knew)? And in light of the fact that, if you look at the video, he could clearly see an Offensive Carolina Panthers teammate diving for the ball right in front of him? And because he is still a relatively young quarterback with an entire NFL career still looming in front of him?
In all honesty, I did not see the seasoned veteran Peyton Manning dive for any fumbles either. In fact, most good NFL quarterbacks with any sort of a future in front of them tend to do anything to avoid being hit by the Defense -- even if it means a failed, even 'fake' pass attempt (ahem Brady).
So no, I do not fault Cam Newton for failing to dive for that fumble. Et tu, Brute?

Given the score and time situation, yes he can be faulted. It shows a lack of courage, plain and simple.
6
Like we don't see enough of Manning shilling insurance and pizza on TV, he has to do a beer commercial in two of his post-game interviews. Not classy.
5
Surprisingly, he was not compensated for the name-brand mention. I guess he just knew that there were cases of Budweiser awaiting them, as Budweiser is a big sponsor.
1
Denver's defensive back Talib should have been thrown out of the game after the deliberate face mask penalty !!
this article says "led by peyton manning and a stingy defense" when it should have read "led by von miller, demarcus ware and a swarming defense", with peyton manning along for the ride." the writer either didnt watch the game or just mailed in a unfact checked article. This game was solely won by the broncos defense. Peyton Manning was a spectator, at best a capable game manager. But lets be clear---the defense led by Miller and Ware won this Super Bowl.
8
Manning did not say he would have a lot of beer, he said he would have a lot of Budweiser. Maybe the Times doesn't want to participate in promoting a product without getting compensated, but it is wrong to present something as a quote while changing the words.
2
Manning said "Budweiser" on the field immediately after the game, but changed it to "beer" when he was interviewed on the stage as part of the trophy award ceremony.
4
Whether Manning was good, not so good, or over-the-hill, he won. So much goes into winning that game, and he did what it took to come out on top.
6
When you have two great offenses and mediocre defenses, the game is not considered ugly. This game was all defense. It was different. It was not ugly for those of us who love watching great defense!
6
I hear so much talk of how Peyton Manning is too good to go into broadcasting after retirement. No less than the front office for such football royalty. And yet, I can't help noticing the guy will hawk anything: pizza, insurance, buicks, beer....
4
As would you and I if we could find someone fool enough to pay us to do it.
Frankly, the outcome was obvious after the coin flip. That Carolina deferred to the second half revealed they were on the defensive from the outset. You have to play your brand personality and they failed to do so. They were under Manning's thumb from the first moment of the game to the last.
Super Bowls are often Super Bores. Yesterday's was one. For Denver fans it must have been great. For the rest of us, not so much. The NFL knows offense makes fans tune in, but they can't control who gets to play in the Big One.
Denver's defense was unbelievable. Cam never really got going.
However if the officials hadn't gotten the Cotchery catch wrong, who knows what would have happened.
Too bad Peyton's a Republican, but at least he's not supporting any of the crazies.

And Peyton's political leanings have what to do with the game play!!??
1
Manning didn't lead any team to victory this time around. the defense carried him to the finish line and even helped him over.
3
Funny how the game resembles life in America today. The losing team trying to blame others for their inadequate performance instead of owning it.
4
I watched the pre game coverage from 5pm till the game started. It seemed 90% focused on Cam. It seemed Obvious who the network wanted to win. That's the good thing about sports. The hype is only valid if the person hyped lives up to the expectations. Peyton was humble throughout. It might not have been his absolute best performance but he did make a number of plays that allowed them to win. He is a true champion and I loved what he said afterwards giving all credit to the team.
8
This was a heavy weight fight between two old time champs, pounding each other for 15 rounds.
So happy for Manning and Miller and Phillips.
John Elway's first Super Bowl appearance reminded me of Cam Newton's yesterday; the Broncos got there on the back of Elway's toughness and arm but once there didn't have enough of a team to win the game. Same thing with his next two. Only when Terrell Davis was added to the line up did they succeed in winning the trophy.
Newton should have a great career and a couple more chances to win the Super Bowl but last night it was the Broncos, and Bronco Nation is very happy about it.

I reject with your supposition that this was a poor game because it was a bad offensive performance by both teams. Football is not ballet. I saw a very hard fought game where both sides gave their all. A game in the tradition of Vince Lombardi and original football. I saw a great struggle by teams who were well matched, fought as hard as they could, and where the better team prevailed only in the last few minutes.
8
Peyton, Peyton. Please stay in Denver and become part of the coaching staff. Football needs your focus and your smarts. Bronce nation adores you!
3
Watched the first quarter. Got tired of a lousy game being interrupted by largely lousy commercials - or was it the other way around - lousy commercials being interrupted by a lousy football game.
It's nice that Payton Manning won what will hopefully be his last football game. My impression of Cam Newton is that he is a little too enamored with himself. Despite his very good season statistically, he does not come across as a championship caliber leader.

After last year's mistaken MVP, they got it right this year. A defensive lineman won it all. NFL....as dumb as they think we are. And, as much as Denver did NOT show up at their last Super Bowl, they showed up for this one.
Long live Peyton....please retire. I am tired of cringing every time someone comes in to crush you. We don't want to see you hurt, sitting on the sidelines never to be heard from again. Just ask John. Plus, I root for Cowboys, Bears and whatever team Peyton Manning is on.
Feel the love now? Git while the gittin's good.

Cam Newton was taken out of the game by the same brilliant, brutal defensive line that took out Tom Brady. All hail Wade Phillips! Cheer up, Cam, you're in good company and tomorrow's another day!
6
This game made me remember why I used to like football. Surprise - it wasn't all about the quarterback! Awe - a masterful defensive team, strategically deployed, devastatingly effective. Admiration - for a coaching staff that pragmatically capitalized on their assets while insulating their weaknesses (the opposite of what the Panthers did, in their hubris and high expectations, fed by the media like this story's writer).
And delight - for a game showing more than just pyrotechnic passing; for a formidable defense showing how they can rise to be an offense in and of themselves; and for John Elway, who learned the lesson taught so painfully by Seattle: Defense. Defense. Defense.
Offense wins downs. Defense wins championships.

Peyton played to the end using mostly just will power and wisdom of years of experience.. You have to dance with those that brung ya. It was messy to watch , we are not used to defense being the star of a season/ Super Bowl. Couldn't help but compare to the battle bowl on Sat. In New Hampshire, where the rudderless ship of fools were all pillocks, Thank you Helen Mirren!
5
This is why I don't gamble on football.
Super Bowl is totally overhyped, boring, and a huge waste of good Sunday time. Took my wife out to see The Big Short, very entertaining, than for a fab dinner.
1
And yet you took the time to read the article and comment.
5
Peyton Manning and the Broncos' triumph came six years to the day of the New Orleans Saints' win over Manning's Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV on February 7, 2010. The coincidence is mythological and seems altogether just.
2
Where is the stat about how much CTE was inflicted by this barbarity?
1
It's always amazing on how the pointspread, oddsmakers and media hype always point in the wrong direction. Prime example - gross weight of the Carolina offensive line at 1,317 lbs (avg 317 lb/player) were there to protect
Cam Newton. Sorry about that chief.
Denver defense delivered and Peyton Manning can now ride into the hagiographic sunset. Go Broncos.

"...as Manning threw a series of wobbly passes..."??? I guess a lot must ave happened when I took that 45 second bathroom break. Or maybe the author has a unique definition of the word "series."
2
CAM, they don't give you a Super Bowl win just because you're 6'5", weigh 250 pounds, and dance like Tinker Bell... you have to make plays and earn it!
2
One of that first things I learned about football is that defenses win games. Denver proved that last night. At least the game wasn't one sided. Congrats to the Broncos and their fans.
3
I was surprised by two incorrect calls that went against Carolina early and were questioned by the coach, the first inexplicably was not overturned, and led to the Denver touchdown. But also several pass interference calls were not made against Denver, reducing Carolina's progress. I didn't care about who won the game, both teams were good enough to win, and I would have celebrated either, but the referees seemed to make themselves part of the game. That's not fun to watch.
1
Contrast this performance to Tom Brady's — Brady, equally battered, fighting until the last second, after a similarly brutal game. Throwing a touchdown pass as time ran out.
6
Can we not talk about Tom Brady?
1
Peyton! You're loved by all and now, more than ever, a role model for children. Was it really worth the extra money to make that statement about drinking a lot of beer - 'Budweiser' - twice?
Not Mark...
Go Broncos! Go Manning! Manning: What a genius and a class act. This write up was not very flattering. Though I watch few football games, and after all the head injury revelations I watch much less, there are a few games I follow. Could not watch this one as I live overseas, but did catch up with the highlights. Not a great game but a great defense. And Gaga's national anthem was ugh, and her pant-suit was even more ugh. Where is Whitney when you need her (still the best national anthem performance. But the guys showed much sportsmanship. Good job on all sides. Now back to the Presidential race...:))

That was an incredibly poorly played game by the offenses. I love good defense, but to truly shine a defense needs to compete against a flexible, imaginative offense. Both offenses failed both in execution and imagination. Poor Peyton has 2 Super Bowl victories but neither is really re-watchable.
No mention of Aqib Talib's shameful, inexcusable flying facemask tackle after all the recent stories about risk of injury in the NFL?
The NFL absolutely needs to eject any player that flings another player like that. Instead Carolina got an extra yard added to the play.

Hats off to Denver. This was a great defensive game. I have a friend in Carolina who was shell-shocked at the Panthers first half performance until I pointed out that they weren't bad, they were getting the stuffing beat out of them. The Denver defense is awesome.

How do you feel about concussions when playing soccer?
Nice win for Denver and a good comeuppance for Cam Newton's over-the-top pre game attitude, but Peyton diminished himself by huckstering the Budweiser afterward.
4
Not such a big football fan these days, particularly as the Giants aren't very good, but this year's Super Bowl was replete with all sorts of penalties as well as inconsistent passing In the earlier days of Super Bowls, penalties would be the sorts of things that coaches would dread. Perhaps now it's better to devote more time to the Puppy Bowl. Surely, too, it's time for Peyton Manning to retire. He looked bad, missing makeable pass plays and opted for a running game which did little. A number of times late in the game with 3rd and long Denver would run the ball, perhaps trying to run out the clock...but with a lot of time remaining. That didn't seem so smart. So for Manning now, why not go out on top? Also, it's hard to understand how anyone can say here they were certain Denver would win. Carolina was merely 1 touchdown or less behind for much of the game, and in football a team can score a touchdown in les than 1 minute. With Cam Newton's pregame hype, it seemed to me Carolina surely would come back, particularly in light of Denver's weak offense. Kind of amazing that they didn't.
2
Pregame hype is just that.
Can't believe so little has been made of Newton shying away from his own fumble when he was stripped late in the game. Little or no announcer commentary and no questions raised after the game. Amazing
10
To his credit Phil Simms, the game analyst, did comment on it, and said that under the circumsances, with the game on the line, Newton should have gone for the fumble. But he also gave Newton a dodge, saying Newton might have thought the ball was already dead.
1
What game were you watching. Phil Simms called Newton out repeatedly for that.
1
"In a grinding, lackluster game"...
Yes the game was grinding, but certainly not lackluster.
Sloppy, maybe.
But I thought it was a great game and maybe the sportswriters of the NYT didn't get it, because the game was played and won with defense.
Terrible NYT article.
Best wishes to the Broncos, and to Peyton Manning if this is his last season.

The game went as I thought it would. A number-one defense defeats a number-one offense. Well, in Super Bowl history, I think it's now 10 victories for the D out of the 12 times such a match up has taken place. When I watched the conference championship between Denver and New England I commented that the Denver pass rush was the most terrifying I could recall ever seeing. For all his talent, I truly believe Cam was shocked and awed by the defense he was facing. PS: Payton, you are in the conversation for GOAT. You've got your second ring, so little brother can't tease you anymore. Hang 'em up, it's been great but it is most definitely time.
How could Cam Newton just stand by and not make any effort to dive on the ball and recover his own fumble in the fourth quarter? Yes, Carolina was already losing, but that play sealed the loss.
5
If one is a fan of fluid offense, this game was obviously a bust. Hardly a shocker, though. Carolina had a good game against Arizona, and a good half against Seattle. Earlier they did not play much of a schedule. What they accomplished for the year is still remarkable, and they will only get better as they get healthy. The result of last night's game would seem to suggest the actual Super Bowl was two weeks ago in Denver?
3
A very high proportion of pro football games are won by the team that benefits from the most turnovers by the other team. Especially if a team scores on a turnover like a pick-6 or fumble recovery. Which Denver did. Nothing new here, right?

There should be a rule that product endorsements, including what appeared to be a full-screen kiss from a pizza magnate who won't buy Healthcare for his employees, even using the money he's earned from shorting their wages, are not allowed.
He may endorse Jeb!? but was caught rummaging through the seat cushions of the Busweiser bus in a performance reminiscent of Hillary's farewell speaking tour on Wall Street.
And I'm from Denver.

I guess Brady must be happy with the outcome. Now any future discussion of "deflation" can be ascribed to Newton. It seems the "Superman" ran into a wall of Bronco kryptonite.
Manning shouldn't think to long. Should he continue, the recent drug allegations will bubble up to sully a mostly exemplary career.

Again we witness what a good defense can do for a team with an old tired quarterback beyond his years.
10
Okay Peyton Manning, you are going out as the top 1%. Enough's enough! Step aside.
2
Peyton gracious in a team victory over very worthy opponents. Build a new wing on the Hall of Fame.
5
If Mr. Newton wants to be treated like all the other quarterbacks he perhaps needs to act like 99 percent of the other ones--as an intelligent person, a team-minded person, and adult and a professional. As I expected, he's all smiles when the win, and doing commercials of course, but when one thing goes wrong he becomes a big, immature, selfish person. I was pretty sure of that all along and he's proven my point that his 'all Mr. Nice Guy' and 'little old me' fake personas were indeed just that. He never once took credit for any of the team's poor performance like the....old days. Twenty-six going on twelve years.

How do you teach a man humility?
You humilliate him.
You humilliate him.

Mr. Payne: But you can only teach a man who is willing to learn.

It was not CAM vs. Peyton, but Panthers vs. Broncos. However, to focus your attention on CAM then it would be CAM vs. Von Miller & Defensive Company with very little help other than skinny Corey "Philly" Brown, who suffered a concussion. Wade Phillips did an excellent job neutralizing Greg Olsen and maintaining outside containment, however, it is easy when your linemen missed blocking the best pass rusher in the game.
The Panthers should be defined as a team that goes for the early KO and the bad call on the catch by Jerricho Crocherty was huge, however, a mentally sharp team would overcome it. I definitely agree with CAM that the Panthers missed opportunities to take control with dropped passes, fumbles, missed blocks, missed FG (that was simple), and the worst special teams coverage and tackling in SB history. If I was CAM I would have asked several teammates, "how much did they pay you" because many played atypical to the performance that put them in that position.
Finally, for the people that take joy and want CAM to be humbled would feel fine with the "no massa, yes massa" approach. For a people that spent over 150 years in this country as slaves and the Jim Crow era, it would speak highly to have their successors to walk in high esteem and self-validation, but this is America and not much has changed other than industrialization and technology. "Great men use their worst moment to reach their best potential", therefore, CAM soak it all in and DAB.

Agree with much of what you say and I don't doubt that there are those who are gloating over Newton's comeuppance. And my, didn't he just hand the prejudiced his head on a platter? He deserved the MVP; I think he'll bounce back; I will be rooting for him to do so. His postgame behavior had nothing to do with race. It was just plain childish.

This part of the problem of the NFL-new generations of fans, who probably never even played sandlot football, want the ball moving up and down and lots of touchdowns-which is why the rules are constantly tweaked in favor of this touchdown mania. I thought this was a very good game. You want numbers-the object is to win the game. Great defense by Broncos, good defense by Panthers. What is wrong with you sportswriters? Read a little history, understand the game. It is not complicated-football is fundamentally simple. The defensive effort in the playoffs by the Broncos this year is probably the best in history.
21
Amen! But did you really expect better from a sports media that spent 90% of the 2014 off-season focused on Michael Sam (who never made it to the NFL regular season) and "Johnny (and we know how that worked out) Football"? Please!
1
I thought it was a great game.
Newton did not fumble the ball,, it was stripped. There is a huge difference.
The two defenses were sterling, wonderful. They each beat the beegeebers out of the two offenses.
And if Bill Pennington can't see that,,, then he needs a new job.
The assumption that games are to be ajudged upon their offense only is looking at only half of the game.

As soon as the Times Mr. Hoffman predicted a Carolina victory, i relaxed, knowing the Broncos would win. His track record was impeccably...wrong. When you consider that the Times predicted victories by Pittsburgh and then New England, you have to wonder. Did your analyst ever play a team sport? He failed to recognize that this is a team game, and that a roster of 53 is required to compete. Peyton's 2013 season demonstrated that you can't do it alone, no matter how great you are, and this 2015 season demonstrates that when you play as a team, nothing is impossible. Thank you Broncos for the inspiration. Thank you John Elway for the courage to go in a different direction and thank you Peyton Manning for demonstrating incredible resilience and flexibility. Congratulations to a great team!
11
Denver's defense put on a clinic last night, just as it did against New England a couple of weeks earlier. The coach of Denver 's defense, Wade Phillips, if not an unsung hero, is most definitely the "under-sung" hero behind the Broncos' victory.
11
At least they didn't drape another undeserved MVP trophy around his neck. Have the the Manning QBs ever WON a Super Bowl?
4
Irony.
Peyton Manning was a superb quarterback, but had great difficulty in the past winning the Big Game.
Now in the twilight of his career, with less than mediocre stats, he receives another ring, while the newest "hero" in the NFL in Newton, looked as bad as Manning once did in the Big Game when he was tops.
As for the NFL in general, the corporate structure has almost destroyed the game. I implore anyone to go back and watch an old game, like Superbowl III to see how great a game football once was before corporate dollars destroyed it. Too many commercials, too many replay's disrupting the game, too much officiating, too many penalties, and too much self-promotion of the clowns on the field that are just doing their job, but act like they pull off incredible feats of athleticism making ordinary plays.
Just watch Superbowl III to see exactly how the NFL has degenerated thanks to corporatization and marketing.

This game was about Cam Newton learning that he is not invincible and hopefully gaining some humility. Gold "MVP" workout cleats before the game? Please.
5
Thank you NYT for reporting Manning's product placement quote as "I’m going to drink a lot of beer tonight". As a complete neutral in this one, I'd sort-of favored Denver as a sentimental nod to the likely end to Manning's stellar career. But as the far more knowledgeable guy I saw the game with said immediately after the quote, Wonder how much he got for that? Shilling for a sponsor's beer as the first thing you do after winning the Super Bowl, so much for sentimental nods.
1
He did it on his own ... didn't get paid by Budweiser. But he owns a Bud distributorship. Classy, no?
This is why the NFL is dying....the long-term effects of brain trauma is one thing (but they'll always find athletes willing to risk their lives for the right price) but surely no true fan of football enjoyed last night's spectacle. The NFL is sport--22 men attacking each other for a brief moment then replaying that moment over and over and over again and parsing out every single motion and expression ad nauseum. Yikes! RIP NFL
I love Peyton and I'm really happy for him. But honestly, he didn't win the game by any stretch. The Bronco defense won the game. Peyton managed not to make any critical mistakes that could have cost them the game. If Newton, or any other great QB was the Bronco's QB in SB50, it would have been a blowout. I really hope he retires and gives a young, fresh QB the opportunity they deserve. Please Peyton, call it a day and leave with your head held high. Thank you for all you've done for the sport but It's time to go.
3
It was a perfect game: Denver had a decent lead at halftime, which was just about the time "Downton Abbey" came on. So, an hour of Downton Abbey, which also allowed us to avoid the overblown halftime baloney, then back to the game which was, by then, in the fourth quarter, with Denver holding a solid lead which it held until the clock ticked down to 00:00. Manning was, as all Manning men are, gracious in victory. He deflected the fawning postgame "questions" and attributed the win to the Broncos team, which, of course, it was. The game was a fine victory by a team dedicated to collective success over an opposing fine team too heavily invested in one of the game's leading "Me First"ers. Football is an opportunity for learning to occur. I doubt that the unsuccessful quarterback learned a single thing. Thank you Archie and Olivia for all you and your children have done for American athletics.
2
Look up Russell Wilson's interview after losing the Super Bowl last year. That was a class act!
11
Absolutely right. Wilson was a true man in how he handled the loss.
1
Poor little cry baby Cam Newton. Could not have happened to a nicer guy. Just exactly what all of us expected of a spoiled, overrated baby. You want your mom to come hold your hand at the news conference so you can cry? The opposite of Manning, the humble play maker who never talks about himself. The Panthers got lucky this year. They will be back to their typical .500 season next year. How disgusting Newton's behavior is. I love it when the non humble get humiliating. And don't even get me started on Beyonce's so called political statement. She is worse than Newton.
5
You neglected to hurl a barb Obama's way too. No matter, we all get where you're coming from.
1
"In a grinding, lackluster game..."
Say what??? It was spectacular, precisely for all its 'grinding.' Since when is a match-up of two of the best defenses in the league 'lackluster"? Seriously, maybe you'd be happier with Madden NFL than the real thing.

I'm so sorry, Bill Pennington, that this Super Bowl didn't live up to your expectations, let alone the media hype. Your words wax poetic "... perhaps this moment was too pregnant for the twilight quarterback and the upstart [Denver and Carolina]."
Aw, they spoiled their moment on big stage for Bill Pennington.
When it comes right down to it, Denver and Carolina let the world know exactly what they were watching; an American football game. Not a scripted highlight reel. A good old fashioned game ... with all it's imperfections! I'm thinking it was still exciting for the average fan (like yours truly).
Congrats to the old man, Payton and Denver Defense!!

Pennington must have been watching a different game that I was, or maybe he was just rooting for Carolina. The game was anything but lackluster. It was tense and exciting, dominated by the Denver defense.
1
Peyton's a great player and, if this is the end of his career, he deserved to go out on a high note. But, this was the Super Bowl, not a career retrospective, and the media attention to Peyton after the game completely overshadowed MVP Von Miller and the Denver defense. Given how Carolina has played this year (though consistently underrated), the defense put in one of the memorable Super Bowl performances of all time. I'm left with the image of Von Miller's fingertips of steel straining to knock that ball from Cam Newton's hands, as he did.
2
Good for the Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning; Defense win's all the time. Go now Peyton while you can still walk :-)
Cam Newton's post game news conference was pathetic. This is how he used to behave when he first came into the league and Carolina wasn't winning. Things won't go your way all the time Cam - stop behaving like a petulant child.
I also wonder why he didn't jump into the pile of men to try and retrieve the ball when it was stripped from him towards the end of the game.

As a Browns fan I know nothing about Super Bowls. And as a Browns fan I am constitutionally geared toward hating the Broncos. But as a defense-minded guy I loved watching the Broncos get after it. That said, I was happy to see my favorite ex-Buckeye Teddy Ginn, Jr. get some much deserved big stage exposure and my second favorite ex-Buckeye Bradley Roby continue his great career. Didn't really have a dog in this fight, but sure enjoyed it.
1
Penalties galore, runs for no gain, incomplete passes, long commercial breaks - it all came together to produce an agonizingly boring game. My football purist friends say that I missed the beauty of great defenses on display, but great defense is simply not as entertaining as great offense, and the sole purpose of professional sports for the spectator is entertainment. After last year's incredible game this once paled in comparison.
1
Some of us find defensive plays like sacks, interceptions, and forced fumbles really exciting. They are very hard to accomplish, and they tend to turn the momentum of the game suddenly. That's as exciting as a touchdown.
It is easy to say in hindsight, but in light of the way Denver's defense performed
against New England, pressuring and hitting Brady as he had never been pressured and hit before, their performance against Carolina was anything but surprising.

2
Wade Phillips won this game. Manning showed why he should be on the bench. Give credit to a great defense. Thhe Carolina defense played well also but the Denver defense gave their team 14 points.
1
Manning gave up salary up front to pay for that defense, on the condition that if they won the Super Bowl he'd get it back. There's more than one way to be a smart, savvy, winning QB.
It looked like the Broncos had 2-3 extra players on defense. And all of them super fast. Newton's slow delivery didn't help the Panthers. He stood there, as if to say, see I can stay in the pocket. He showed little or no sense of urgency and alertness as Broncos overwhelmed him. All those rushers and blitzers were coming from somewhere and there had to be a free receiver in those vacated spaces. But Cam wasn't ready or focused enough to hit them, so says this Monday morning armchair QB. Great Bronco's D. The Panther's defense wasn't bad either. Both offenses were.
2
If you had watched the Broncos all year, like those of us in Colorado, you would know that that was how they won all year: overwhelming defense (that scored a lot of point) and an offense that contributed lots of field goals. I didn't think they could keep the Panthers to so few points. The Broncos defense was so good that it made Cam look bad - but we know he is really, really good and will win a Super Bowl in the near future.
3
Carolina’s success has hinged upon Newton’s ability to hang in the pocket, survey his receivers, and run when passing was not an option. The Denver defense has thrived on preventing precisely those offensive tactics. Once it became apparent Denver was shutting down Carolina’s plan A, there was no plan B. There were no short slants across the middle, no screens, no quick outs or dives, plays designed to get the ball out of Newton’s hands quickly, and hold the linebackers in place. MVP, Von Miller, was constantly in Carolina’s backfield harassing Newton, yet Carolina failed to make the appropriate adjustments. My football experience ended years ago in high school, but it seemed obvious to me that Carolina was outcoached.
5
The Panthers appeared to have dismissed Denver's performance against New England. Did they think Cam was so much better than Tom that adjustments and a different game plan weren't needed? Telling players that all you need to do to win is to "go out and be yourselves" when objective evidence exists that this approach probably won't be enough is the definition of poor coaching. Congratulations to Denver.
The better team won. Cam is good, not great (yet, time will tell). I think if Seattle (with a much better than Cam quarterback, in Wilson) was in this Super Bowl instead of the Panthers they would have beat Denver in my opinion. The real championship game was Pats vs. Broncos.
Boo Tom Brady all he wants, but when he wins Super Bowls, you don't see him holding the trophy and cheapen the moment by just using it as an excuse for product placement as Manning did last night.
You didn't also see him sulking and pouting and walking away in the press conferences when the Patriots lost in the Super Bowl. Instead, you hear him accept responsibility for the loss and praised the winning team, something Cam didn't have the character for.

Let me see...
Denver defense has kept ..Roethlisberger...Brady and Newton to I think one pass touchdown in their last three games. That's TOTAL domination from a defense....Denver's offense did what it needed to do.
Great defenses almost always win the Super Bowl.
If that isn't great football....maybe you don't understand the game!

Why do you call it an unexciting, lackluster game? It was one of the great defensive battles I have seen. And as most people know, the defense wins the game. I enjoyed watching how the defense strategized and upset the plans of two great quarterbacks. You don't have to have touchdowns to make a great game. Blocks and defense are great to watch too. And the MVP was a defensive player. If you had highlighted the high points of defense instead of degrading the offense, your article would have been more balanced.
I read a book (that my wife "forced" on me [grin] ) many years ago, called "The Thinking Man's Guide to Professional Football."
There's a newer version out now. Worth a read. It clearly explains what is most important in Big Games -- the OL and the D. 'Nuff said.

Denver outplayed Carolina and won due to their defense.Manning and Newton both had ok games and each made major mistakes.Cam's biggest blunder was not trying to recover his fumble.Cam just wimped out of any attempt to get the ball as it was on the ground.Cam's post game performance was horrendous. He behaved like a 2 year old does when his mother refuses to give him a toy at Walmart.Cam was classless.
1
A defensive Super bowl... not fun to watch.... I thought the commercials were awful... skipped halftime.. but the right team won...
2
The oddsmakers and media hype got it wrong again (surprise). Example - the Panthers offensive line gross weight of 317lbs/lineman would protect QB Cam Newton from the Broncos defense. Sorry about that chief. In the end, Denver's defense delivered and now Peyton Manning can ride off into the golden sunset of football legends (thank God).
Go Broncos (you did it ugly, but you won).
Go Broncos (you did it ugly, but you won).

Once again the best defense has won and the best offense has been beaten. Two years ago the Broncos had the best offense in NFL and were shut down. To his lasting credit, general manager John Elway rebuilt the team to create the best defense in the game. This meant that the Broncos were able to win more close games this year than any team in history, and their wins were very much team efforts. And little things like Norwood's longest punt return in Super Bowl history may not get mentioned in non-Giants/Jets-game reviews in the NYT but they were the margin of victory for this great team.
I enjoyed seeing Peyton, after the 200th Super Bowl quarter ever played, win his NFL record 200th game and I think that should have been mentioned here too.

The Times must have gotten wind that Peyton Manning leans Republican and so they trashed him. Peyton did exactly what he was asked to do—protect the ball. The Broncos game plan was to have the defense win the game. And they did just that. It sure wasn't a "lackluster game" if you appreciate defense. Perhaps on of the best ever.
2
The Media in Denver repeatedly stated that defense wins championships and that is exactly what happened in Super Bowl 50. The article points out nerves, turnovers and penalties as the undoing of the supposed invincible Panthers, but all three of those can be directly attributed to the stifling Denver D. Those hoping for a high-scoring game were disappointed by two of the best defenses in the NFL, too bad!.
2
This particular game last night was one of the best displays of DEFENSE that the football community has seen in many many a year......those Broncos were a swarm of bees and poor darlling Cam had nowhere to hide and had no time to get a real pass off (except one really good one).....it wasn't that his line broke down it was that the Broncos broke them down, confused them, and were quicker than they were.
Simply put.......
The author of this article doesn't know what good football is......and should be reassigned to the gossip column

Bruno Mars stole the halftime show! He was excellent.

Oh come on fans...it was an old guy's last game and he did NOT win it. His defense did. The young guy disappointed but so what. He's got a brilliant career ahead of him. Did he stumble...yeah! But did he have the protection to do his magic? NO! Peyton is way past his prime. He knows it. So does everyone else. Will he bow out gracefully? You bet. What was the best part of the show? The National Anthem sung with no subtlety by a blonde with bravura. Next...
18
Ah, but it takes a season to even get to the Super Bowl and Manning has been an integral part of that. Football is the greatest team sport. Should Manning bow out now, he will have enjoyed an epic career. Respect for one of the greatest in the game.
Too bad that Manning had to end his classy evening by announcing that he'd soon be drinking a few beers. No matter what the beer's brand, 'tweens hear another role model reporting essentials of his post-game celebration.
The NFL spent years changing the rules to give offense a big advantage because, for the millions of more casual fans, the long pass plays and high scores are so much more exciting. If defense continues to dominate the game like this, count on some rule changes to attract a bigger swath of the audience bell curve. The old baseball manager Casey Stengel had a saying "10-80-10": 10% of the fans love the game and know it as well as the experts; 80% don't know much about it, but they like it anyway; the other 10 know nothing/like nothing. The routing of the offenses of the Pats and the Panthers were games for the ages, for those who truly understand and appreciate the sport. The real money, though, is in pleasing the 80%.
5
Kudos to Von Miller and the Denver defense! This was an old-school thumping in an era where football is designed to be all about offensive scoring. Defense wins championships.
5
Actually Manning, acting as corporate shill, said he was going to drink a lot of Budweiser that night. Kudos to the NYT for not amplifying that bit of crass commercialism. (Though they probably should have not used quotation marks around the edited remark.)

If you'd like to read something from the NYT where the writer saw the same game you did, might consider this one:

Thought after watching the Bronco D put Brady on his back and rattle his cage, it might be different with Newton - younger, bigger, stronger, blah, blah, blah. Not so much. Guess perhaps leadership, sportsmanship, maturity, humility are more important than many thought. I understand RGIII is available as a backup QB 0 roll eyes......

Whether or not this was a great super bowl is not what I want to comment on. What disturbs me is how tasteless and violent the non-stop ads were. America, how have we stooped this low?
2
The true Cam Newton. After the Auburn debacle (which the NCAA refused to do anything about despite it being worse than the Ohio State and USC issues), his ridiculous self-important "dances" and interviews in something akin to English, and then this performance.
The true Peyton Manning, humble;e, funny and competent.
Oh well, sometimes the press is wrong.

sorry, but I don't understand why virtually EVERYONE is talking about this as an ugly game, a bad game, a totally unmemorable game, a game that -- as the Times has it -- "fizzled" . . . isn't great defense well worth watching? -- and wasn't von miller alone worth the price of admission?
9
Yes, the Denver D, the greatest defense in NFL playing at SB 50 was well worth watching. And also, The greatest QB Peyton Manning (even thought it wasn't the his greatest performance) winning his last super bowl wining was WELL WORTH watching.
I don't mind watching Football...my husband and I watch it together. But the preening, showboating, dancing stuff that goes on all the time, turns us both completely off. And, the announcers encourage it. Yuk. Confession...at 9:00 we watched Downton Abbey, then caught the last 5 minutes of the game.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Lets start with the Ugly:
1) Peyton Manning's obvious product placement in his comments after winning the game made me want to never drink a Budweiser again.
2) Aqib Talib's facemask penalty as he dragged receiver Corey Brown down out of bounds by his facemask
3) The NFL replay squad that could not overturn a bad call on what was a clear catch by Jerricho Cotchery that was ruled not a catch
the Bad:
1) Offense that never hit its stride from both teams
2) Tom Brady being allowed on the field as an MVP after the deflategate scandal
and finish with the Good:
1) Old guy playing football and having fun doing it
2) Defense that matters
3) Any Superbowl game that doesn't have the Patriots

Not having seen much of the Panthers, I was really looking forward to see what all the Cam Newton fuss was about. I really wanted to be awed, instead I was disappointed. He displayed no competitive fire and seemed trying hard to make it look easy. Good to see the harder working team win!
2
Jean-Paul Sartre wrote something Cam should think about:
“In football everything is complicated by the presence of the opposite team.”
He said also something Manning should keep in his mind:
“Once you hear the details of victory, it is hard to distinguish it from a defeat.”

Cam was taken to school. He can add humility to the learning curve. Still, he remains a talent to be reckoned with.

I must say that my recollection of Payton's comment was thus:
“I’ll take some time to reflect,” he said. “It’s been an emotional week. I want to go kiss my wife and my kids. And I’m going to drink a lot of [Budweiser] tonight.”
Was the NYT censoring?
Or did I hear wrong, thanks to a Bud or two myself? :)

Newton's unwillingness to risk injury to go after his fumble late in the 4th quarter will haunt him the rest of his life. Had he been able to recover it, he would have saved his team 8 points and perhaps still might have been able to pull out a victory. Instead, he chose not to try. We'll never know why, but my guess is he was just gutless. He has lots of talent, but his self-absorption and need to draw attention attention to himself and away from his teammates is despicable. From now on, whenever a player fails to aggressively go after a fumble, he will be said to have "pulled a Cam Newton." This will be his legacy. Children will playfully re-enact it. Saturday Night Live will probably make a skit out of it. What a waste. It is always such a shame to see so much talent squandered on such an egomaniac.
3
That game was played by supposed "professionals", yet was full of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Football is a team sport, yet the league and media focus on the dances and impudent antics of individuals. I'd always found the disciplined workmanlike precision of a great football team a thing of beauty, but yesterday's game was a mash of individuals preening every little accomplishment. Look at me!!! I tackled someone!!!
4
I'm no fan of either team, but I can't believe this article could be written without even discussing the terrible officiating. The referees gave the game to Broncos, pure and simple. It was disgraceful. The NFL seems to have scripted Manning and the Broncos to be the chosen ones.
1
When quarterbacks have big games, defenses have failed. This was merely the reverse, not messy or ugly at all. Fantastic defensive plays, one after the other. Manning, in his own words just one of the band members now, struggled mightily but managed to play his part in getting the job done. Beautiful.
5
I saved a lot of time by reading this summary and skipping the game.
Proposed "Cam Newton Rule": All MVP votes will be AFTER the Super Bowl.
3
Yes. It was a stinker of a game, but a fitting end to a great career for Peyton. Sometimes you win ugly. Not every Super Bowl can be super.
1
Thank goodness it's over. Now we can return to that other great bore, the Presidential election farce.
2
So much hate... we can't even enjoy a collective game of football as a nation. Cam doesn't get paid to give eloquent responses to reporters. He's an amazing athlete and this is where quarterbacking is going. A person who shows his emotions - both joy and sorrow... and yet, hater's gonna hate.
13
Actually, he does get paid to respond to reporters. That's a requirement of his job as a player in the NFL.
1
I couldn't care less how he acts in the interview room, but on the field, at the critical moment, after he fumbled, he did not dive in to recover it, but backed away like a coward. He may be an amazing athlete but he has no guts. He's not a winner. HIs teammate Thomas Smith played with a broken arm for the past 3 games.
Yes amazing athlete. Okay with being so disappointed you don't want to take an interview. But shying away from the ball with the superbowl on the line ... if he's the future of the NFL that's disappointing. A guy who its more important to get a photo op than to pick up the ball.
i guess you don't find defensive football to be beautiful.
5
What this game proved so well which we all know but forget Quarterbacks are no better than their protection. It was not quite as bad for Brady against Denver but the result was the same. More generally take any of the best Quarterbacks and put them behind an offensive line that can't protect them and they are reduced to being mediocre. As Cam Newton proved Sunday.
3
What a wonderful game! After seeing the effectiveness of New England's defense against Denver, I thought the Panthers would follow suit. How wrong I was.
The loss will make a better team of the Panthers and I look to seeing them back next year. Call this one a "learning experience."

Over two hours to play a sixty minutes game! My! I am happy I converted to English football three years ago; two, forty-five minute halves, no time-outs and compelling sport.
1
The Broncos did to Cam Newton what they did to Tom Brady. No other comments needed.
Congratulations to the Broncos. I, like many, didn't give them much of a chance but they proved us wrong. Their defense should have been named collective MVP winner.
Manning gets points for doing just enough to give his team the lead throughout. He gets a few more points for not announcing his retirement at the end. But he loses most of them for his Budweiser shilling. Just when he could have ridden out a king, he became a money-bloated jester. Some ambassador.

I think that the writer of this article must be a closet panthers fan. I have thought all season that Cam Newton was and is insufferable blowhard. No respect by the writer at all for one of the game's greatest quarterbacks. I have been most of my life a packers fan. Vince Lombardi teams never behaved like Cam. He really got his yesterday. There is a new label for him: coward. Unbelievable that he could not help his team by falling on his own fumble.
8
Manning 2, Brady 4. Hope Manning has a couple years left to Brady's 5-8. If not, great career Mr. Nationwide.
1
I hope that Cam Newton will take this loss as a learning lesson. He's a great athlete and has a glorious future.
But he should learn humility. I've watched the NFL for decades and don't recall Starr, Unitas, Bradshaw, Montana or Manning acting like a fool after they scored or threw a touchdown.
I hope that Cam learns from this beat down and stops acting like a jerk.

5
Correct me if I'm wrong, but was this the first Super Bowl where the last play of the game from scrimmage was NOT shown? Really CBS??
1
I guess Cam Newton felt it wasn't his job to try to recover the ball after it was knocked from his hands. Newton may remember that play for the rest of his life and should. The other Panther players should remember as well.
4
Cotchery did not make the catch. His hand was underneath the center of the ball but the front of the ball hit the ground and he lost control.
4
Yes. That's how I saw it.
OK, all you people who are worried about the head injuries -- did you watch? I didn't. Plenty of other things to do.
I thought Manning was crazy to play again after the spinal injury, I guess he knew he would go out this way.
1
Indeed, one of the greatest NFL players of all time reduced to a pitchman for Budweiser, not once (on the field in a Janet Jackson "did I just see that" moment) but twice (on the trophy presentation stage when we had to remind himself. "I'm gonna drink a lot of beer....er, Budweiser"). An awkward redux of Phil Simms "I'm gonna go to Disneyworld" in 1987 after the Giants had beaten, guess who, the Broncos. Where to squeeze more advertising? Perhaps Manning will considering returning as an in-game pitchman, his audible calls the last fertile advertising ground: 22-46-Omaha STEAKS- hut! And one more thing: for all the talk of kissing his family, the first smooch Manning got after the game was from pizza mogul and (surprise) Manning endorsed Papa John!
6
Did Bill Pennington watch the Super Bowl?
"... a grinding, lackluster game ...".
And "Newton gamely tried to rally the Panthers ..."?
He fumbled during the "rally" and watched the ball roll around at his feet. And that is putting it kindly. It could be said that he didn't just watch the ball but rather backed away as if it was made of kryptonite.
Superhero? I don't think so.
Congratulations to Denver.

I did not watch the game. Thank yo for the update. Went to YouTube to see Gaga's national anthem. That was amazing.
1
I am no fan of Lady Gaga and I expected she would do something outrageous to somehow desecrate the Star Spangled Banner. But, my hat's off to her. I think it was the single best rendition of that song that I have ever heard.
1
I liked Gaga's rendition...and she did a good job copying Whitney Houston's wonderful riffs.
After yesterdays NYT article "how the Panthers will beat the Broncos" turned out to be so wrong, you publish an article attacking the quality of the game. Sounds like a move from the Donald Trump school of journalism.
25
ORANGE CRUSHES Panthers 24-10!!!!
Two MVP's: Von Miller = Most VALUABLE Player and Cam Newton = Most VULNERABLE Player! Was he sacked 7 times?
Cam has several months now to work on his DAB for Super Bowl 50's humiliating loss. The underdogs won by 14 points!
DEFENSE wins championships!

Saw Cam Newton's interview after the game; big hoodie, face down, mumbling his answers and generally ignoring all the other people in the room. Compare that with Peyton Manning when his team got crushed in their last Super Bowl. Newton should be watching THAT game film. Maybe he could learn how to lose with class and stop pouting like a little baby.
25
I expect its participants to act like children...since it is a children's game.
Cam Newton...overrated! The Broncos have the weapons to slice and dice up the Panthers offense.
2
Victory was inevitable once Manning returned to the helm late in the season; it was meant to be. Also a win for Denver, led by the great Manning, is a win for the University of Tennessee. (Not to mention Malik Jackson and Britton Colquit)Go Broncos! Go Vols!
2
oh my, which game did you watch? To call Manning a bit player would be generous. His getting feted was due to him reaching his professional end and nothing to do with his current qb skills. You've got to travel back to Trent Dilfer in 2001 to find a SB QB performance as inconsequential.
D is the Broncos story this year, not Manning.

Yawwwwwwnnnnnnn. Dull game. Bad half-time show. Bruno and Beyonce made me smile, but who were those white guys?
Nice people and good food at the party I attended, though, so not a total waste of an evening.

Shades of Derek Jeter! Peyton shows us you CAN go from carrying the team - the Colts - on your shoulders to become an also-played man who does enough to gwt he team over the hump.
Cam will laugh at his shocked-amateur press conference later on as he also has a good chance of playing when he's close to 40 and we'll all be back here in 2028 or so. You have to expect fitting-in problems with a guy who was basically sold to a college alumni club by his family.
The better defense always send the great offense home empty-handed 9 timws out of 10. It happens that way with nations, too, as well as individuals.

The exception to the better defensive team always winning the Super Bowl were the Minnesota Vikings --four times as a matter of fact!!
Was it Bud the Coach or Fran T that said he forecast that the Vikings would go back to the SB that year - AND that they would lose again? Funny!
The runner there that switched the young boy has been seen jumping up onto a 40-inch high level - from a flat start - while holding some incredible weight.

What a shame that a great defensive effort by Denver is tarnished by the unspeakable facemask tackle by Talib, who should have been thrown out of the game. Totally disgusting, and then just tack on the stupid taunting call before that...he looked like a true punk, and disrespected his own team.
14
True enough, that. 15 yeard Facemask penalty, yes. For grabbing the facemask. But when he viciously flung him out of bounds by that facemask, that SECOND part of that play should have gotten him tossed. Horrible officiating... can't help but think that the zebras had dough on Denver, and an inherent interest in keeping things close.
I hate to totally agree with you on the face mask tackle--he should have been ejected. As for the taunting, not so much. It was pretty clear that he and the receiver were jawing and maybe even the receiver initiated the "conversation." Nonetheless, Talib has been flagged repeatedly this season for cheap and ugly personal fouls and should be suspended for a couple of games. -- from a lifelong Denver fan.
1
Lackluster is how I'd describe it too. What a snoozer.
1
Wrong. It was a defensive battle and anyone watching who thought this was going to be an offensive extravaganza doesn't following football. This was a defensive victory for the Broncos who have relies on their D all season.
Cam got his commupance, most evident after he fumbled and cowardly did not dive and recover the ball, when it was right in front of him. THAT more than anything signaled that he is not a winner. Any other QB, and I think of the Jets Fitzgerald, would've been in the middle of the pile recovering the ball at risk of his body. Not Cam, he just wants to strut but not sweat do what needs to be done.
13
Gutless Cam:: he needs a new Cam job
Hey Cam, who do you think is scared of you now?
3
Certainly not Von Miller!
GUTLESS Cam pulls up after he decides not to attempt to retrieve his own Fumble!
Super what? Oh yeah, that concussion and commercials thing. American football has this going for it: it gives us something to talk about instead of politics or religion.
4
Ever since the lights went out on the SF/BALTIMORE Super Bowl, I've been suspicious of the influence gambling has had on the outcome of these games. Could Denver really have been that bad against Seattle, and this good against Carollina? Anyway, it's something to think about now that Monday-after-the-game has arrived.
10
Yes they could be bad two years ago and this good today. John Elway learned a very important lesson from the Seattle trashing and built a defense second to none, that's why the Broncos won. All season it's been just enough offense bolstered by the stellar defense that won games.
That's exactly what's so hypocritical about the NFL...online gambling, especially the ability to continuously place bets on all sorts of esoteric things DURING the game, has totally put into question the integrity of every NFL game. The powers that be know the NFL's huge popularity is substantially based on fantasy leagues and the attendant gambling that goes hand in hand with it. The league has embraced DraftKings and its ilk.
Horrible Super Bowl. From the get go there was no doubt who would win. I think the Carolina coaches did a really poor job of studying game film - all they had to do was watch the AFC game over and over to see how even seasoned quarterbacks get totally befuddled by the strange looks the Denver defense presents.
Any coach knows the opponent will build a game plan around disabling A teams number one asset. In the case of Cam Newton, its his ability to run outside the pocket. Just contain Cam, and game won. Which is what happened.
As a Patriots fan humiliated by Denver over and over, it's hard for me to congratulate this team but I must. The far superior team won and it wasn't even a contest. They say Peyton might retire after this game, but I wouldn't be so sure. Even my boyfriend said this morning that Denver would be stupid not to retain Peyton, who really has to do very little given a defense like the one they have.
Fo the sake of my team I hope they don't, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do.

Thoughtful response. Thanks.

Arguably, the only quarterbacks who are better than Peyton today, given his neck vertebra fusion and injuries, are Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. Peyton can still play for a couple of years so long as his playing time and health are managed well by the Broncos coaching staff.
1
Christine: Very Humbling to see a Patriots fan congratulate Peyton! BTW, I am from MN and like to see the Patriots win the Super Bowl again and again under Tom Brady!!

Super dud! A terrible game. Full of mistakes on all sides. The NFL cannot define what constitutes catching a football. Even with the instant replay and review they cannot get it right. That mistake may have changed the game.
Carolina gets penalized 15 yards for someone slapping the football and for a slight push in the back. Denver gets penalized 2 yards for Talib throwing the receiver out of bounds by his facemask. He should have be thrown out of the game for that.
I guess the TV commercials on opioid constipation and the intestine with IBS watching a football game were fitting.

Thank goodness we didn't have to watch that obnoxious glory-hound Newton performing his "I'm so wonderful" dances!
102
Sour grapes. Cam is tall, handsome, funny, athletic, smart, and did I say handsome?
1
Newton is a great player and probably a good guy, but way over the top with the "Look at me!" routine. Some players expend so much energy in celebration and they are obviously not keeping their heads in the game when doing so. Newton has the opportunity now to learn the value of humility and staying focused on what's important. If he can do that, good chance Carolina will be back next year. It's a team sport, Cam.
3
Old age and treachery will beat youth and exuberance every time.
Cam Newton's performance last night reminded me of Jameis Winston's last game at FSU. It was inexplicably awful. Fumbling into the endzone in the first quarter? Yanking on the ball after a succesful handoff to the running back? Failing to dive on your own fumble with 4 minutes left?
36
Am I the only one who noticed that MIller facemasked Newton resulting in the sack and fumble? If you recorded the game - go back and have a look. That was shortly after the incorrect call of incomplete pass. I began to wonder if the "fix" was in.
The Broncos D is clearly on a par with the Bears of 85-86 and the Ravens of 2000-2001. The Seahawks of the past few years are definitely in that neighborhood. The NFL spent years changing the rules to give offense a big advantage because for the millions of more casual fans the long pass plays are so much more exciting. If defense continues to dominate the game like this, count on some rule changes to attract a bigger swath of the audience bell curve. Games are really won in the trenches and the Pats and the Panthers simply got their jocks handed to them.
1
Throughout the game, I couldn't get Joe Hardy from Damn Yankees (film version) out of my head. Stripped of his diabolical powers by the devil, Hardy, turned everyman Joe Boyd again, stumbles in the outfield but manages to make the final catch to secure the pennant for the Senators. Manning wasn't superman last night, but he got the win. Like Boyd, I hope he avoids temptation and realizes it's time to go home.
6
I have to say I thought the broncos would be beaten by 2 tds. That said I was surprised how good the bronco defense really was, but I do think it is unfair to keep trying to make Manning the hero , he was out a lot of games and the ither quarterback shpuld het some credit. Manning will now just be a old qb that will have a hard time getting out of bed in 10 years , athletes have to realize when it is over it is over . go away and drink your Budweiser Peyton .
11
At least Peyton can show you his TWO huge Super Bowl Rings. Cam can show you videos of his Gutlessness ( when he actually pulled back, failing to recover his own fumble) and his Unprofessionalism ( with his post-game interview) and Lacklusterness ( his poor play performance in the Big Game that counts!
Couldn't believe the way Newton actively avoided trying to recover his own fumble.
25
Well, at least we know what Manning will say when he announces his retirement: "I'm going to drink a lot of Budweiser beer."
Apparently this is what players do now after the Super Bowl instead of going to Disneyland.
Apparently this is what players do now after the Super Bowl instead of going to Disneyland.
7
Good for Manning and the Broncos. And good for all those who think that sports should not be wrapped up in political correctness and reverse racism, for whom Newton has become the poster child.
18
Newton's race baiting exploded in his face. i couldn't say whether the Broncos who took the ball away from Mx MVP shoes were black or white. Either way, touchdown.
14
I think the implication of this article that Manning was "carried" to a victory is needlessly dismissive of a sure Hall of Famer and is probably born of deep disappointment at the times that Cam "they afraid of a black quarterback" Newton did not win.
18
Why? His second half quarterbacking was weak. 12 third downs in a row without getting a first down. The defense and an awkwardly weak day by Cam Newton gave him this championship. Plus a little help from the refs.
You seem to have a real agenda going here, Here. Peyton Manning is indeed a sure Hall of Famer, but he's also 39 years old, battling age and the effects of a career's-worth of hits, and Sunday was surely not his finest hour. He's had a remarkable career, and winning his second Super Bowl is the perfect capper to it, but anyone who watched the game would acknowledge that it was Denver's defense, not Peyton, who carried the day.
"An anticipated showdown between an old-style quarterback and his new-age counterpart — not to mention two top-seeded teams — degenerated into a morass of poor throws, dropped passes and horrible pass protection, with a combined six turnovers and 18 penalties."
Bill, your assessment is the worst of any I have read since the late 1950's. Defense, Bill, it was defense.
Don't you understand how difficult it is to catch a football when another is attempting to take it away? Do you understand how difficult it is to pass a football when a 270 pound person is attempting to throw you to the turf?
This was the finest display of defense in any Super Bowl.
I have witnessed each and every one.
Rulon Jones and Karl Mecklenberg are bursting with pride.
Well done, Broncos.

Rulon Jones! Thanks for bringing his name up....those two could do some damage to opposing offenses.
In a grinding, lackluster game, ???
I thought a pretty exciting game and on each play edge of your seat to see if the Denver defense would get the ball somehow and would Cam break out a stunning run. Or Peyton would whizz a 60 yard missile.
One play either way and it as a different story.

or lost his bet
Terrific that Manning will go out with a win. All the Mannings are terrific. Archie got stuck with the Ain'ts, so at least 2 of his sons have collected 2 rings each. Archie was great in college (didn't like it when he played UGA} as were both Eli and Peyton. Now Peyton needs to retire, get into coaching or business as he's made a lot of money in advertising.
I am so glad he won. The quarterback that Auburn paid a fortune for lost. Karma.

From the perspective of a former defensive lineman, this game did not "degenerate into a morass of poor throws, dropped passes and horrible pass protection". This game rose to incredible heights of defensive spectacularity! Cam Newton was petrified by the combined mighty force of Denver's linebackers, linesmen and defensive backs. It was not a "grinding, lackluster game". It was a game of defensive mastery, with a ferocious defense causing the quarterback and running backs to eat dirt. Let's give tribute where tribute is due - to the likes of Von Miller, Brandon Marshall, Derek Wolfe, DeMarcus Ware, T.J. Ward, Danny Trevathan, Malik Jackson, and to the likes of Bobby Bell, Junior Seau, Willie Lanier, Ray Nitschke, Jack Ham, Jack Lambert, Ray Lewis, Dick Butkus and Lawerence Taylor. It will be best remembered, but not by you prissies who think football is about high scores.
254
And don't forget to mention the master of the defense 'Wade Philips."
2
I agree totally. The article tries to make the game sound sloppy, but it wasn't. Fumbles were all caused by the intensity of the defense. What I saw was a spectacular battle between two top defenses and Denver clearly won that battle. Very exciting game.
4
I don't pay much attention to the blather of the announcers - but somewhere during the first half of the game I distinctly remember Phil Simms making the point to the effect that - "Great pitching will always dominate great hitting" -- which reminded me of the 1969 "Miracle Mets", with Tom Seaver et al -- when hey would win their games by scores of 1-0 or 2-1 --
As I watched Cam Newton being terrorized by the Broncos' defense - and saw the look of confusion, and then fear on his face - I was reminded of how the New York Giants defense basically did the same thing to Tom Brady in their first Superbowl meeting - that same look of "How can this possibly be happening to ME?" --
It was one of the greatest displays of a championship defense controlling the game from the opening kickoff - all the away until the final second of the game - and - as a Giants fan - I could only admire it with a bit of envy --

It was Miller time, Ware and his buddies all showed up. Relentless all game, same against the Patriots two weeks ago. This defense has to be ranked with the best. Peyton was a passenger on this bus, time to step off. Cam will learn from this, he'll be back at big game a few more times.
26
Not to diminish the Bronco's defensive unit, nor Peyton's passing. Nice to see the old guy win one.
But this was a spectacle of poor officiating. The Panther's 23 yard pass, ruled incomplete by officials "after review" was very clearly visible as completed on the TV replay. The receiver's hand was beneath the ball, and touched the ground, the ball did not. This bad call set up the goal line fumble situation which followed shortly later.
As live theater goes, this one was a flop. I only watch one pro football game a year...this was it. Otherwise, I prefer college ball. At this point, unless the Pats or Jets were playing, I doubt I'd bother looking at another.
Oh...and the commercials? New standards were set for stupid.

I second that. As a Patriot fan I definitely had no skin in this game. But tbh the refs were not fair all night. Whenever the Panthers seemed to get some flow going in their offense (second half) they threw a flag while the Broncos were allowed to do everything they wanted without getting any flag at all. The flag before the second touchdown is a perfect example. The Broncos did the same thing at other times. No flags. Now the defense was great and probably would have won the game on their own. But the refs made it boring to watch as they seemed to be too one-sided to let the Panthers back into the game.
Perhaps the most boring Super Bowl in history. The shameless plugs for Budweiser didn't help at all. They were as awkward as the victory.
12
A couple of the comments mentioned that Peyton named the beer he was going to drink. But I would like to highlight that the quote given in the article is wrong. He did not say the word "beer" he said "Budweiser".
10
Peyton was interviewed twice right after the game, first by the sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson and then on the trophy presentation stage by Jim Nantz, who asked him to repeat what he'd said to Wolfson. The first time Peyton said "Budweiser"; the second time he said "I'm going to drink a lot of beer tonight, Budweiser, Vonn Miller's buying." So the quote isn't wrong.
A #1 ranked defense in the SB wins every time.
PS - The game was really boring to watch.

Not if you're into defense!!! For me, the game turned on mid-4th quarter defensive stands & the kicking game. With Denver in poor field position, a critical turning point seemed certainly to have arrived. Manning played lo-risk, conservative, Denver punting for 44yds to exchange the favor, Miller & company's heroic effort creating the game clinching opportunity.
This is Football!

You make like it was a bad game to watch. Well, my wife and I thought it was one of the most exciting Super Bowl games ever and not just because Denver won.
Love that photo of Len Dawson in first "Super Bowl" having a cigarette in the locker room at halftime. Maybe, Cam Newton should have had a puff between halves.

On the first play from scrimmage, before Newton got under center, he brought his hands up to his face, closed his eyes and prayed like a child at a bedside. From that moment on, God abandoned Cam in a fit of anger at his arrogance that God might actually care about Cam and those other millionaires, their play, the result or even keeping them injury free. Right there, Cam lost me and I think himself. I don't think he ever really got into the game. All week I heard he was made for this moment. Apparently not. It overwhelmed him. God was not on his side.
24
Are you serious?
God abandoned Cam? What a load of... If that is being left by god what did the billions starving on this planet do to anger god? What did people do who lose their children, spouses to accidents, sickness, violence, etc.? This was a football game. Newton is still rich, still talented and still with a well-paying contact. Your response is just as childish as a prayer before a Football game. If there is a god he hopefully cares about other things than who wins a Football match...
The writers are talking about Manning's performance as if he were wheelchair bound. In fact, he led his team brilliantly using his body's somewhat limited available resources.
The very first drive set the tone: the Broncos would not simply go to the running game; quick passes, smart choices, down the field we go. And when his body was about to be pounded, he went to the ground rather than risk further injury, or a loose ball. By no means did either team bring their 'A-game' on offense, but Denver did more that what they had to do. They moved forward. They scored points…even a 2-point conversion to put a lid on Carolina. They put their head AND their heart into the game, and entertained a nation full of fans in the process.

Manning took some tips from the Sonny Jurgenson playbook.
I liked this game, if only for the fact that neither team totally dominated, and the outcome was not a foregone conclusion by the end of the first quarter.
Peyton Manning and the Broncos played like a team inspired and deserved to win. Cam Newton is talented, but he hasn't learned yet that there is no 'i" in 'team.' Unless Newtown -- and the Panthers -- start playing like a t-e-a-m team instead of a t-i-m team, they will fall short when faced by a team like Denver.
Newton needs to polish his skills in some intangibles - real leadership, grace under pressure, and sportsmanship - if CBS's camera crews in Super Bowl 50 caught the "real" Cam Newton, Time and again his petulance and lack of maturity showed in his own play, his reactions to officials, and also in his reactions to the play, and struggles, of his teammates. Rather than shaking off his disappointments, and trying to encourage or "pump up" his team after major miscues, Newton exacerbated the negativity plaguing the Panthers at every turn. His play today was an embarrassment to professionalism in sport.
Thank you, Peyton Manning, for a stellar game and the very quiet acceptance of your own contribution. Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware gave great defense, and Miller was absolutely deserving of game MVP honors. Luke Keuchley and Kony Ealy made the game for Carolina.
Awesome Super Bowl all around, except the Giants weren't playing!

Glad for Manning.
Just goes to show that good coaching can make the difference.
Nice to see most of the "Experts" were wrong.

Bill, Have you an idea - any idea at all - why Von Miller was named MVP?
He was named MPV for his stunning display of defensive prowess.
That defensive prowess, Bill, is what led to dropped balls, poor throws, horrible pass protection.

This game, like most of pro football games these days, was *boring*. Cam Newton is overrated. The Superbowl is overrated. The halftime shows are played by a bunch of clowns to a high-rolling bunch of Silicon Valley fans who paid $25 for the "special wine" on the menu at Levi Stadium (yeah, another dying brand, "Levi"). Football is overrated. The excitement generated by soccer's World Cup far exceed the rotting corpse of football.
Everything went south after Heywood Hale Broun and Howard Cosell retired and were replaced mostly by double-digit ex-pro-footballers in the announcer's booth (exception: Al Micheals and John Madden).
On top of that, San Francisco's own "fawning-after-the-wealthy-guys" Mayor, Ed "Puppet" Lee, took another deal he couldn't refuse (after all...photo ops!), costing San Francisco taxpayers a cool $5M, while the 1%er owners who run the NFL rubbed their greedy blue-blood hands together.
Glad it's over.
Football, essentially, is a dying sport. How many parents are keeping their kids from playing on the gridiron? I'd dare say a lot. Those kids are the future of football, but they are going into different sports.

It is truly fortunate then that you have any number of options for your entertainment. Football may indeed be dying yet MMA is popular with a segment of the population and it most certainly is more damaging the football.
For all of it's excitement, soccer has failed to take root even though far more kids play soccer than football. Baseball was once America's game, then it faded. Football may experience a similar fate, but for now it reigns supreme in American sports.

Reign's supreme? Ha! Just like bullfighting, in Spain. Pro football is a farce. Just look at the BILLIONS spent on the sport of football as it sucks the life from college campuses. It's a 'warrior nation" sport, fit for a Neanderthal time.

"An anticipated showdown between an old-style quarterback and his new-age counterpart degenerated into a morass of poor throws, dropped passes and horrible pass protection"
This lede is wrong. Let me help Mr. Pennington out.
The showdown between quarterbacks ending in an overwhelming victory for the Carolina Panthers, predicted by the New York Times, never occurred, because of the scintillating performance of Von Miller and his teammates on the Denver defense who took over the game and dictated its outcome.
Miller forced two fumbles which resulted in 15 points for the Broncos, while the Denver defense held Carolina and Cam Newton to 10 points total, a defensive domination reminiscent of the '71 Cowboys, '85 Bears, and 2000 Ravens. Miller proved un-blockable by a single offensive tackle, a fact that threatens the continued existence of the pro style offense.
The Times is so busy trying to explain away its bad pregame coverage, that it is failing in its post game coverage as well.

Only other QB to retire after winning a SB: John Elway.
Only coach to ever win a SB with the team he played for: Gary Kubiak.
Only QB to win 200 career games: Peyton Manning.
A certain symmetry.

Tom Brady has 172 regular season wins and 22 post season wins. That's 194 career wins. I'd say that particular record of Peyton's is going down.
Boring game. A halftime show so embarassing to the country that it rivaled Donald Trump's performance as a presidential candidate.
6
While Manning showed definite deterioration in passing, it's unfair to say he fumbled. Like Newton was by Denver, Manning was stripped of the ball as he was to launch a pass. He didn't fumble. You might have also reported that when Newton had the balled knocked out of his hand as he was passing, he had the opportunity to recover the ball himself but stepped back. That is NOT the action of a true leader. And as far as the game being "lackluster", it shows the bias of a critic who doesn't value the defensive artfulness, flair and downright grit by both sides that was going on on every single down.
27
Everyone who has played high school football knows that Cam's instinct should have been to drop on the ball. When he didn't I knew that he either was mentally defeated or was throwing the game.
Year after year. Super Bowl is a snore.

Newton may have the tools but not the heart of a champion. He lacked the guts to fall on the fumble and the class to face tough questions. He can DAP all he wants, but those two instances revealed more about him as a man than all his self-promotion and preening.
27
Well said, Peter.
If you didn't watch the game, this article pretty well sums it up perfectly. I think the only thing I'd add (which I missed) was that when interviewed, Cam Newton petulantly and childishly walked off the podium, making the final score so much nicer.
9
Yes, John Lubeck, agree. And for the pouty Newton, in his brief presser, to say that Denver "didn't do anything special" before walking out, priceless!
I guess it isn't surprising that the huge audience for the Super Bowl brings out the "fans" who can't appreciate anything other than a 49-42 track meet. The game wasn't boring and it wasn't poorly played. It was a great performance by an outstanding defense. I was also intrigued watching Peyton Manning use his head to try to overcome what years of football have done to his body as he faced another tough defense. Congratulations to Peyton for tying his brother.
35
Good grief, worst choke I have seen in decades!! Oh well, at least it wasn't a
blowout! Only thing I can come up to explain the Panthers'
success this season was that they had a very soft schedule.

Wait 'til they see their schedule for next year!
What are the rules on modifying quotations? Case in point: Manning emphatically did not say he was going to drink a lot of beer. He said he was going to drink a lot of Budweiser.
9
nope, look at the second interview, the one with Nantz on the trophy stage, Peyton emphatically did say "beer" before he said "Budweiser, Vonn Miller's buying"
This game went exactly the way Denver needed it to go. Peyton Manning' hall of fame talent is no longer there. There is no way Denver could ride on Manning' back to win this game, it had to be the defense for the win. Yes the game was a bit plodding, but that what you get when the game becomes about the defense. Great win Denver, thanks to both teams for great seasons.
15
It's really hard to read sports writers who don't understand football. Not enough QB fireworks for you? That was one of the greatest defensive games all-time. That is football, no matter how they keep changing the rules to get more offensive fireworks. Peyton did make some some bullet passes here and there to Sanders; and Denver, not Carolina, actually stayed with the run and it made a huge difference. Don't you remember what Denver's defense did to the great Tom Brady just 2 weeks ago.
38
Clearly the best team won. Denver's defense first beat Tom Brady's Patriots and then defenestrated Cam Newton and his not-so-merry band. And Newton not jumping on his own fumble deep in his own territory? Indeed, flinching from it? That and his less than professional post-game interview will be long remembered. I never, ever rooted for Denver until this game.
35
Throughout the game, or should I say, throughout the endless commercials, I was unable to get out of my mind all we have read about the physical and mental damage that was being done to all of those players. Seeing the speed and weight of those on the line and the hits in the secondary, well, there is no way the NFL will be able to create a safe sport. If you play this game, enjoy the moment, because the future will not be pretty.
13
I was unsure which team to root for until I saw Cam Newton during the warm-ups wearing a superman shirt and gold cleats with the letters MVP on them. That made it easy to root for Denver.
103
Yes I don't mind the hot dogging stuff but when I saw him on television saying we had never seen anything like him before in football I thought he might have written a bigger check than anyone's _ _ _ could cash.
1
Having watched every Super Bowl, it is hard to believe that there have been 50 of them so far. This one did not disappoint. It also showed that age and experience still has value, which is a little different from Super Bowl III where Joe Namath, then a young upstart, guaranteed a win and was able to pull it off.
I wonder if we will go back to Roman numerals for Super Bowl LI or stay with arabic numerals and call it 51.
I wonder if we will go back to Roman numerals for Super Bowl LI or stay with arabic numerals and call it 51.
12
LI will be held in Houston, Texas in February of 2017.
It has been already announced by the NFL that Roman numerals will return for SB 1.
The NFL says they're going back to Roman numerals. Apparently they just didn't want to promote Super Bowl L. I hope to see the NFL fall apart.
I loved every minute of it. What a great game and what a great way for Peyton to end a wonderful career. If Cam is Superman, Denver is kryptonite. Humiliation will breed much needed humility so Cam will become a better quarterback than he was yesterday.
65
The lack of respect the Broncos received in the lead up to this game was unbelievable. Everyone and their mother was sure that the Broncos would be powerless to stop Cam Newton and that the Panthers would demolish them. It was like no one other than avid Broncos fans even realized how dominant this defense has been all season. This defense will truly go down as one of the greatest of all time, right up there with the '85 Bears and 2000 Ravens. They may actually be even more impressive, given that their feat occurred in an era where the rules have been modified to enhance passing and encourage scoring. So glad that they played their hearts out tonight and showed all the doubters exactly how special they are. Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships. It may seem overly simplistic, but its one of the most truthful and easily forgotten idioms in sports.
4
There are two versions of the game -- a dominant performance by the Broncos defense or an all-around poorly-played game. The stats for the Panthers offense speak of total ineptitude. Four turnovers. more than 100 yards in penalties, no rushing game and no passing game. The Panthers had no plays from scrimmage that were memorable. Not a single exciting long pass or long run. And an easy missed field goal, to boot. I've seen dominant defensive games. My Cardinals crushed the Packers during the regular season. The Seahawks crushed the Broncos in the Super Bowl a couple of years ago. Great defensive efforts tend to be so overwhelming that they are in the faces of the opposing offense all game long. Newton had time, even if not a lot. I can't speak of the Broncos pass coverage because the TV didn't show it. But unless the coverage consistently shut down the Panthers receivers, Newton had opportunities. On the other side of the ball, the Broncos offense seemed mostly to score on Panthers turnovers, with more field goals than touchdowns. No memorable plays from Peyton or his runners. Whatever the reason, this was one ugly game. When a couple of strip sacks wins the MVP, you can be pretty sure the game is a snoozer.
1
Totally disagree with Pennington's take on this game. That Denver defense was a thing of beauty and fun to watch. From post-game TV, that defense is a terror to experience. As for Cam, I thought he embarrassed himself and his team with his immature press conference - the one word answers, only standing there for 3 minutes. So unprofessional. He loves doing his dab when he wins but can't take it when he loses. Very disappointing.
5
One has to ask what if Osweiler had played QB? He can scramble. Would that have made a difference.
It's great to watch defence win games. It is also great to have another win for one of the original charter AFL teams!

What a great throwback defense Buddy Ryan put together. So much for the pass happy offenses. Reminds me of the 1895 Chicago Bears.
Would that be the 1895 Chicago Bears (then known as the Decatur Staleys) coached by Amos Alonzo Stagg? ; )
Spectacular defensive performance that will etch this Broncos team in the history books as one of the best 3-4 defenses in the Super Bowl era. Even more impressive when won considers that just two years ago Denver set the record for most points in a season. From all-time best offense to one of the all-time best defenses in two years -- unprecedented.
2
Um excuse please. Please explain how these offenses played so terribly all by themselves. This article makes it sound as if both defenses were only successful because the offenses screwed up. Why do sportswriters only think a game is good when the offense plays well?
Hello? Peyton and Cam didn't play poorly, the defenses they were facing played great with the Denver offense just good enough to manage to not make big mistakes. All those turnovers didn't happen in a vacuum, they happened because of great defensive play.
Personally I thought it was a great game, not only were the defenses good the Denver defense was so good they alone made the game exciting to watch.
This writer makes in seem like the two defenses were just hanging around waiting for the offenses to make mistakes.

After all these years, I'm still naive enough to wish for a super-star all-Amercian, Mr. Clean sports hero. I was cheering strongly for Manning from this perspective that such a person of integrity can win.
Then it was all tossed aside when he used the moment to get some advertisement airtime in for Budweiser and Papa Johns (he's business owner).
There really are no clean cut heroes--maybe there never were.

Lou Gehrig
It's all a business.
It was great to see an overly arrogant Newton on the turf so much, and especially out of the end-zone. His character really showed when he failed to try and recover his own fumble. I guess the self-proclaimed Superman found his Kryptonite. Hopefully he got a much needed lesson in humility from a truly great and classy athlete!
3
I don't understand the comments about the game. It was a very hard fought contest as evidenced by the close score and the mistakes caused by the respective defenses. A huge upset, akin to the humbling of the Redskins by the wild card Raiders in 1984.
2
The Broncos beat a team that was a total of 17-1 coming into this game. And they did it with the fewest total offensive yards in Super Bowl history!
Crazy.
The Denver defense was spooky.
An uncontainable line and pass coverage that was as suffocating as any I've ever seen. Still the Panthers almost doubled the Broncos total yards. It was the turnovers that proved fatal.
Not the greatest game but fun to see that incredible Bronco defense.
I'll only ad that the officials seemed to be making life very easy for Denver. Does the NFL even know what a man catching a football looks like anymore?
Can you overthink something that badly?

I watched a few minutes of this game. Going in I thought the D-fence of the Broncos would be the difference and they did not disappoint. But more poignantly this was the first Super Bowl I watched (have seen all of them) where I was looking at the faces of the Denver defensive line and wondering which of these guys will end up with severe brain-damage later on, unable to even remember they played football for a living?
1
The game was less about awful offense than outstanding defense, and of course to certain out-of-touch reporters one of the greatest defensive performances ever in any sport by Denver was just boring.
That said, I'd rather see a Seahawks-Denver game any day.
That said, I'd rather see a Seahawks-Denver game any day.

The Broncos knew full well that Peyton was along for the ride and his main job was not to make any major mistakes. Newton was unable to carry the team on his back and did show a strange reluctance to dive after that last fumble.
Officiating was what it always is - imperfect but the errors did seem to both ways. Receivers were held for the Panthers but amazingly, given the fierce pass rush there were no holding calls on the Panthers either.
Defensive games are often called dull, but there is more to the game than loooong bombs down the field for TD's. Nobody seriously expected a lot from the Bronco offense. The real question was, could the defense contain Cam. It's tough to be a super hero when the wrong colored jerseys are all around you.

It is amusing how sportswriters almost always focus on the performance of the quarterbacks and speak of their failure or their success in a vacuum when it is usually the failure of the offensive line to hold back the defence that will rattle any quarterback out of a good game.
Neither quarterback had time to set up and throw and both were under duress for most of the game. Neither side could surmount a running game so it was extremely tough going, amplified by the importance of the game.
If you are going to comment on the performances of the quarterbacks, how about giving Manning and the coaching staff credit for limiting his mistakes- maybe this is where experience can trump talent.
As someone who has seen more athletic days in my own body it would be nice to read some attribution of Manning's experience as a key component of the Bronco victory.
However, like most football games, this one was mostly determined by the relative push of the front lines. Both defenses won their battles, but the Bronco's won it better.

Lackluster? Mr. Pennington is obviously not a fan of defensive excellence. There is an art and strategy to keeping two explosive quarterbacks corralled, confused, and unable to find receivers. Denver's defense played an exciting game. It was so exciting that Payton Manning was content to let the defense get all the minutes and control the game.
Luckily for Mr. Pennington, the NBA All Star games coming. He can watch a zero defense game with guys scoring from all over the court.

It's not really fair (or accurate) to write that Newton was responsible for those costly fumbles. Both times he was blindsided by pass rushers that easily dismissed his offensive line as irrelevant. I'd hold the Carolina line line more responsible for failing to protect its quarterback. That was really their only assignment last night (besides opening creases for their running backs).
1
If this game were to have been played in other parts of the world we would have certainly said - the fix was in. The other team did not seem to have come to play. NFL and TV would love a fairly tale ending to a storied career.
They have one now!
They have one now!
A lot of these comments, and the gist of the story, are predictable. The truth is: Carolina's defense dominated Denver in the trenches. Turnovers, the punt return, and horrible officiating made the difference. I give Denver's defense huge props for capitalizing on the Panthers' mistakes. In fact, they truly seem like the classic "team of destiny" when you look at their season. They won so many close games, setting an NFL record for that. Going into the OT in Week 16 against the Bengals, they weren't even guaranteed a playoff spot. Going into Week 17, they could have very well finished a 5th of 6h seed. They needed everything to go right at the end of the season to get the top seed, and it did.
As for that officiating:
Clete Blakeman effectively gave the Broncos a TD by not overturning the Panthers' first challenge on Cotchery's catch. On the Panthers' missed FG: a personal foul was called for a minor shove before the attempt, and Talib was not ruled offside during the attempt. On the Panthers' made field goal: Ginn was mugged inside the 10-yard-line--no call. (If Phil Simms says it was a bad call, you know it is). This continued a season-long trend of officials blowing key, potentially game-changing calls. Dean Blandino has a real problem to address in the off-season. He seems in denial.
As for Peyton: it was bittersweet to see him win -- but look so washed up. After he gets over his Budweiser-induced hangover, he needs to retire. But good for him for going out on top.
As for that officiating:
Clete Blakeman effectively gave the Broncos a TD by not overturning the Panthers' first challenge on Cotchery's catch. Did you notice Cam's play?
Spot on! I would have preferred to watch a game where the pass to Cotchery was ruled what it was; a catch! Then maybe Cam would have played like he played during the regular season .... obviously we will never know, but what I do know is it was the first of several game changing calls that went against the Panthers.
1
Gregory, Cam came out tight, for sure. Overthrew some open receivers, but also didn't have much help from them or his offensive line. Cotchery had another key drop and his interception whizzed right by Ginn's hands. That said, Cam had two, 40+ yard plays. They just didn't turn into points. It was sort of a collective failure. Statistically : the Denver offense was worse, and set a record for fewest yards ever by a Super Bowl winner. But Carolina did not force as many turnovers as Denver, and could not take full advantage of the ones they did. Like David says, we'll never know what would have happened if Cotchery's catch had been ruled properly. It was a huge play in a defensive-dominated game. (and one note on that: the CONCLUSIVE angle -- from what looked like an end zone camera --- was shown by CBS only once, AFTER the call was upheld. I assume Blakeman had access to that replay, but who knows?)
Peyton Manning was statistically the worst quarterback in the NFL this year and tonight he did not disappoint. As the article notes, this was the weakest offensive performance by a winning Super Bowl team in history. It really boggles the mind that this was still enough to win by two scores--only because Peyton was buoyed by the greatest defense in the league.
This was a uniquely dull Super Bowl contest, defined by ugly offense and beautiful defense. Receivers were constantly missing, but almost every time it was because a defender went all-in and made them miss. Missed tackles were rare, and when they did happen they proved critical. Both quarterbacks were getting ruined by the pass rush, with linemen sometimes moving up unimpeded to sack them.
Statisticians observed that Newton's normally-fantastic numbers went way down--more so than they did for other quarterbacks--whenever he faced pressure. This was certainly not lost on the Broncos, and their defense all but handed Peyton his second ring. This might annoy many fans, but after watching Peyton carry entire teams, often quite flawed, deep into the playoffs for years on end, it was still a richly deserved victory.
Even so, it also stayed interesting until the very end, with the Panthers so close to overcoming their forced miscues and overwhelming the Broncos. The Panthers made several truly amazing plays, defeated only by equally amazing defensive play. Those strip-tackles and sacks were no accident.

"uniquely dull" + "stayed interesting until the very end" = "I can't write"
All hat, no cattle.

Peyton Manning has earned the right to win a Superbowl without being a passing machine. He came back from several injuries that could have ended his career. This season he led the Broncos through the playoffs into the Superbowl after returning from an excruciating Achilles tendon injury. Being a quarterback is more than yards gained - it is being a team leader. Peyton was and is all of those things. My hope now is that he will in fact retire. He is a smart man so I think he will make the right decision. Congratulations to the Broncos and their fans. I also look forward to seeing what the Panthers will do next year.

Well said, sir. As a Giants fan, I would make more or less the same point about his younger brother, after his first Super-bowl where he had a TEAM.

This Super Bowl was and entertaining as most.
Put another way, this Super Bowl was boring, played poorly, and over hyped.
The Half Time Show was a gaudy mess of noise, sexuality, and caucus color.
In all, this is American NFL football today - and the injuries were about as expected, including concussion stuff that took at least one player to the locker room.
Defense won for Denver, not offense. It's that simple.

No mention of the terrible review call in the first quarter that there was no catch? That one bad call changed the entire arc of the game.
Cam Newton, your behavior at the end said it all - knocked on your butt in the end zone and whining for a penalty call. Come on, you're a big strong guy, man up! Back in the day, QBs like Phil Simms took harder shots than that all game long with no complaints. OK, the rules have changed to protect the QB, but football is a rough game, deal with it. Your time will come.
1
When Cam Newton refused to sacrifice his body by diving on the ball he fumbled it said it all. He packed it in and it just about negated the terrific regular season the Panthers had. I'm sure Newton's teammates are not very happy with their "leader"

I've watched 40+ SuperBowls in my 86 years. I watched this one, in fragments, and I wondered why these teams were playing here in my back yard.
One of the sloppiest, semi-amateurish games I have ever watched.
The great players on both sides would this time be justified and forgiven if they hung their fine heads in a little disappointment.

Who knew that this year the NFL preseason began on February 7th.
Congratulations to the Broncos on a win. A win is a win in probably the worst played Super Bowl of all time...what a mess!
In all fairness, it would have been considered a very bad preseason game. Credit to two stout defenses who were miles a head of the offense but who were those guys on the offensive side of the ball? Cam Newton and Peyton Manning and both offenses played like it was their first post training camp game in mid August. Not just the offenses, special teams, play calling, execution, officiating.... were all just way out of synch for a championship game.
Beyond the defenses, thank heavens for Lady Gaga and a group of stellar entertainers for at least excelling in their parts of the show.

The exorbitant commercialism was expected for this event, but I was surprised Manning kissed one advertiser on the cheek and then mentioned the other at the mic. For all the talk of class, it was just cheesy.
4
The guy Saint Peyton kissed is Koch brothers supporter who sells horrendous pizza.

Wow. You'd think a sports writer would have a deeper appreciation for a game than a shallow response about how few points are scored. This game was a beautiful and thrilling defensive battle. The Broncos brought one of football's better defenses, ever, into the game and used it to stop, consistently, one of the NFL's top scoring offenses. (Seems like the Broncos were on the other end of a similar struggle two years ago.) The Panthers also brought a tough defense against an offense that has tended to lose strength in the red zone. This increases the suspense of whether their own defense can keep them in games, or even lead them to a win. Super Bowl 50 was a fantastically exciting game. I'll bet Pennington pooh-poohs no-hitters because one of the teams fails to score and makes "mistakes" at the plate.
11
Contrary to what the writer is saying, I think people will remember this as one of Manning's most important games. Here he was, a 39 year old player who obviously was past his prime. But, he used his knowledge of the game and managed his team superbly. He knew his limits and rarely made dangerous throws. Yes, he lost a fumble and was intercepted but what quarterback doesn't have that happen to him each week? The Broncos would not have won without Manning. Just like John Elway, he is retiring when he is on top. Congratulations for a great career.
1
One reason why this game seemed so “sloppy” was that both teams were very skilled and evenly matched. When this happens, defenses often force offenses into making mistakes that make the offenses look inept when it is more due to the defenses playing superbly well. A good example is Denver's TD in the first quarter. With third and eight on the 15 yard line, Newton HAD to complete his pass to keep possession; but Denver's secondary superbly covered his receivers, Newton waited too long, a linebacker had time to get through the blockers and slapped the ball out of Newton's hand. Superb play more than sloppy play. Looking at it this way it was a good game, superbly played at times by both teams. Also just before Newton's fumble, the refs blew the 20-yard incomplete pass call and even the review: the ball never touched the ground and when the play ended the receiver had complete control of the ball. We'll never know how the game may have fared if this play had been called correctly —but that's the way the ball bounces.

What a roller-coaster ride this year has been for us Bronco Fans!
Hats off to one of the best Defenses EVER!
Well done Payton. Class act to the end. Doff your cap and ride into the sunset.
Stick with the team Brock. Back again next year!

Firstly I am really glad that Denver won - mainly because (at least I think) this was Manning's last game and I was rooting for him...
But I felt for a Super Bowl game it was kinda of a letdown! Offense was really not a part of this - I mean there were so many slips and spills, it felt like we were watching a early season game. But defense made the day and the given Bronco's had the best defense this year it was no surprise that they won...the biggest surprise was how little the offense and the quarterbacks had to do with the results at least for this game.

Any time the defensive team wins in a Super Bowl against a flashy, media-driven offensive team it's always a 'stunning' defeat. Next time, ask yourself a simple question.... does either team have the better defense by a wide margin? That's the favorite, regardless of what Vegas puts up. The public and the media ALWAYS go for the flash.
3
This "lackluster" game was one of the greatest performances in a Super Bowl by a magnificent defense against a superb offense. The underdog donkeys beat the unanimously-favored team of the media, and all this writer can whine about is that this game apparently wasn't the one he wanted to see. The NYTimes picked Pittsburgh, picked New England, and picked Carolina. Each time, the wrong team won.
Boo hoo NY Times sportwriters.

Cam Newton is such a jerk...it was a pleasure to see him get his comeuppance at the hands of a superior Denver defense. He is a talented player and I hope the Carolina Panthers come to the the Super Bowl again and again over the years...and get their rear ends handed to them the same way every year. Ten consecutive losses ought to teach Newton to disrespect his opponents' fans the way he dissed Seahawks fans in the playoffs.
I loved watching him get sacked again and again.

To steal a line from the Washington Post, Beyonce won Superbowl 50.

By the way, did Peyton Manning actually personally advertise a certain beer during an interview after the game? Could this really have happened? Makes me even more pleased not to have watched, if so.
48
He did. Just a coincidence, I'm sure, that t happened to be a sponsor's brand of godawful beer that I'd wager Manning doesn't touch in his "private" life. (The Times quoted him in the article, but substituted the generic word "beer" in place of the brand name.) Must be angling for some more work doing ads.;Manning goes out with a putrid display of corporate shilling.
He corrected himself, first saying he was going to go have some Budweiser beers and then later saying that he was going out for beer and Vonn Miller was buying. He used "Bud" for beer. Not a good idea, but not a mortal sin.
Yes. A Budweiser spokesperson Tweeted out today that he has no relationships to the brand and that they were pleasantly surprised. But it seemed so strange for a QB to mention a specific brand in that moment that it will be hard for many people to believe that.
1
I am proud of myself, I studied and did not watch at all. I love sports, but the Superbowl is too much for me.
43
And yet you were interested enough to click on this story and leave a comment with the certainty that all would see it.

Manning's last game reminds me of Edie Arcaro's last ride. He went out a winner.
14
What a terrific defense!!
What a pouty-poo petulant poor loser Cam is!!
It puts a whole different light on his antics when he's winning....
Thank you Manning for a great career.
So sad you shill for reactionary John Schnatter.

Manning owns several Papa John's himself, but I wish he would divest himself of them. His extensive charitable works speak better of himself than Papa John deserves to have representing his corporation. I have respected and admired Manning since his University of Tennessee days. The win was a celebratory event at my house.

Maui must have caught the wealth-envy training back at school. If only he'd spent that time in the creating-your-own-future training instead.
Beyonce' looked so underwhelming in the almost-outfit that she almost wore. Of COURSE she is the one person in that show who's rubbed shoulders with the Obamas.

Stun the panthers? Really?? Anyone who's followed the ferocious denver defensive unit's stalwart performances during the playoffs saw this coming.
they clearly had learned something in defeat at the hands of the seahawks, who had played every down with as if it were their last...
This was all part of a Very disjointed article!
To suggest the following: "The game might prove the last of Manning’s career, but it will almost certainly not be his best remembered...blah, blah, blah" is indicative of a writer who may have missed the Team bus.

I had the same reaction to the article...disjointed, downbeat and kind of sour.
27
Exactly! The game will be remembered as Peyton winning the Super Bowl in his last game ever. Nobody remembers or cares about the specific artistry of any Super Bowl ever played. Did Joe Namath win artistically? I honestly don't remember, although I saw the game. All I remember is he won, and it was the most important Super Bowl win ever. All people will remember twenty years from now is that Peyton WON and Cam Newton CHOKED.
4
Exactly. Where was Pennington? Sitting in the coffee shop, having a biscuit? His story is so strange. He claims the game was not entertaining, that it fizzled away, lackluster. Somebody got up on the wrong side, this morning. Grumpy Gus must be a NE fan or something. This was a fun game to watch and amazing to see Denver just destroy Carolina.
3
What an odd season in which it was never clear which the good teams were. Fitting that it would end with a championship team that struggled throughout to generate offense but still prevailed.
13
Even though the Broncos won due to their amazing defense, it's still a slap on the face of all the critics who wanted Osweiler instead of Peyton to start.
Why don't they just shave their heads if not give up writing altogether? Treating an all time great of the game with such contempt. Absolute Know-nothings.

Are you High? Did you watch the same super bowl as me? Being that Peyton Manning was clearly playing horrible Denver's defense gave him a lot of chances to put up more points I'm surprised it ended 24-10 it should have been 45-10 For as many chances as Peyton had to make touchdowns but once again he failed to get a lot of touchdowns and he also went 3 and out a lot of times.
4
Patrician, I have a different take. In Super Bowl 50, Peyton Manning played the role Trent Dilfer played when the Baltimore Ravens won their first Super Bowl: don't make mistakes and let the defense win the game for the team.
While I fully agree Manning had a great career, reputations do not win football games. Most of the credit for Denver's SB50 championship victory lies with its defense, not Manning.
It would have been interesting to see how Osweiler would have played in the big game (Brock engineered two or three big victories while Manning was out with an injury, the New England game being his best effort, in my opinion), though, for long periods, he proved almost as inept as Manning at generating offensive punch for the Broncos.
Predictions: Manning will retire before the start of the next season, and the Broncos will make it a priority to find a quarterback to support, or possibly replace, Brock Osweiler.

Congratulations to Peyton and team but what's up with Peyton's shilling for Papa Johns's and Budweiser??! Made me squirm, a lot. Plus he is endorsing Jeb! according to Jeb! Oh for goodness sake Peyton...don't make sully all my good memories of you...
192
I agree. The Budweiser stuff was egregious and took away from my respect for the old guy.
1
He forgot to mention that "I'm going to Disney World!" Apparently okay for baseball players to mouth that, but not footballers?
jeb!- sacked and fumbles! picked up and run in! on the way the D clobbered Carson, ran over Cruz while Rubio was cheerleading and Trump was in the stands to get the ball which he yanked from a kid's hands. But which of the GOP is suffering from concussions- hard to tell as they are all exhibit some form of symptoms.
2
In the last 3 halves of NFL football this season, the Seahawks were the best team. I really think that starting at kickoff today, the Seahawks would have beaten either team. As a Hawks fan I'm not complaining and, yes, I know that one has to win the crucial games to be in such a position, but I'm just sayin' that on this given Sunday, R. Wilson & Co. would have beaten either team. Of course, my 1964 White Sox, winners of 10 of their last 11 games (losing only one to the Yankees and finishing one game out of the AL championship standings), would have given the St. Louis Cardinals and Bob Gibson a run for their money but that is one of those similar counterfactual situations about which we will never know. Oh well, I guess that's what makes sports so compellingly entertaining.
16
But Professor -- the Seahawks had their opportunity to show their superiority.
They got blown out by Carolina, and Carolina got dissected by Denver's defense.
Beer talk in the student union is fun, or used to be at that age, but remember: that's why they actually play the games. To see who actually wins.

Down by 31 two weeks ago professor. You should really believe that.
3
Yes, and I think the Roman Legion or the Mongol Horde would have made quick work of ISIL. Let's live in the moment and give credit to a dominant Broncos defense and Payton Manning for hanging tough throughout the season. One half is not a season.
2
This is for old guys everywhere. Can't wait to read TMQ this week.
10
Cam Newton is very good, but he can't win a championship all by himself. The Denver defense defused his offensive line, his receivers his running backs, and thus Cam Newton himself. For all the glorification of its superstars, football is still a team sport. Denver had the better team today.
217
He's a pretty sore loser. Why did he bolt the press conference?
1
Did you see the lack of effort he made in trying to recover his own fumble? That didn't look like a leader to me.
Absolutely...because Superman had so many sidekicks to help him... wait... he didn't...
Congratulations! It is good to see an old guy win.
60
There is no old guy in team.
3
Even better to see a self aggrandizing, juvenile Newton lose. He needs to grow up, but nowadays surrounded by our arrested development pop culture, that probably will never happen.
What's this nation coming to when the Super Bowl is way more boring than a GOP debate? I'm worried, America. Very worried.
113
You probably say "boring" because you had no skin in the game.
Sports writers lose all focus and enthusiasm when they cannot fashion Pulitzer Prize winning descriptions – in this case of what most resembled a street fight.
For the opposite of boredom, think of the six figure bettors on Newton and company. Then think of the millions of fans in Colorado and North Carolina.
Finally, think of the head coaches and owners who are closely analyzing your "boring" event, while entirely rethinking their draft tactics, staff composition (where is Wade Phillips number two?) and field generalship for next season and beyond.

There are two parts to football, offense and defense. This was a spectacular defensive game. Sorry you missed it.
3
Agreed. I've already resolved not to watch NFL games next season.
I'm through, except for watching the Seahawks whenever they play.
It is troubling though, how this season, out of the blue, they seem to have militarized the game, invoking the flag and the uniform at every turn.
And what about their vaunted front office brain trusts? 25 teams took a pass on Wade Phillips two years ago. That would be the Wade Phillips who is the best defensive coordinator in the game and won Super Bowl L for Denver. At an average cost of $4,500. per seat for L, the game is a caricature of income inequality in this country. Long time season ticket holders in Seattle, many of them trades people etc., sell their tickets and make a decent second income.
Bizarre. TV shots of billionaires and their retainers high fiving each other in their glass boxes is about as off putting as it gets. Forget the Seahawks, I'm done. From now on NO to any and all football except maybe the U of W Huskies.
And the Ducks and the Cougs. But that's it. Promise.

Ugly game from start to finish. Yes they do say defense wins Super Bowls, but it also makes for dull Super Bowls. Every quarterback needs to learn a lesson in humility before really attaining greatness, and Cam Newton got his tonight. The lesson he learned is that he can't do it all by himself.
54
....or should have learned.
Good to see low-key, unassuming Manning manage to overcome the Panther juggernaut through guile and old man strength, He also administered dose of humility for Cam that may do him some good in the long run.
87
It was the defense - not Manning. Just like the Ravens in 2001.
2
I'm happy Manning won what will likely be his last game. But he didn't win it through old-man strength. At best he played so-so. Denver's second touchdown wasn't the result of Manning's guile but rather a Panther penalty. If you feel Newton needed to be cured of a lack of humility, please realize Manning didn't inject the dose of medicine. Many congratulations to Manning for a fantastic career. As for Newton, I think we'll see him in another Superbowl.
1
I didn't see a brilliant Q-back for D- I saw a brilliant D-fence that D's 3rd string Q-back would have won with.
I remember '99.
What a thrill to see the Broncos Win Again!
What a thrill to see the Broncos Win Again!

Yet another horribly played "Super" Bowl, this one starring a self-appointed "Super" Hero! No other major American sport has such a record of championship games that look like pre-season games. This was not the case when we had the NFL, and the AFL, and Championship games, not Stupor Bowls.
Thanks for not using the NFL's self-important Roman numeral to name this super let down.

Actually, if you hated the game that much, you want them to restore the Roman numeral L. For "Loser."
I thought it was more than adequate entertainment. "Defense wins championships." Old-time, smash-mouth football. As the gods intended.

3
I'm surprised there's not more written about the dropping of the Roman numerals. After a tradition of 50 years, the NFL has decided that the letter L might be just too confusing for the fan base I guess. Interesting commentary on the general state of the nation.
1
Have you forgotten about last year already? And what about XLVII, XLVI, XLV, and XLIII, just to name a few other recent Super Bowls worth remembering?
Great Defensive job by Denver. Even a better job in shutting down the insufferable Cam Newton, who got what he deserved: a thorough beating which his arrogant, showboating style called for, BIG TIME.
Well done Denver! You put Newton and the Panthers in their place.
Well done Denver! You put Newton and the Panthers in their place.
95
Perhaps this will give Mr. Newton a new moniker New Yorkers should relate to: The Un-Namath.
Not to mention Newton's sour grapes press conference. It was a pleasure to watch a Panther's game without his celebratory armpit sniffing gesture inflicted on his opponents each week leading up to this game. Taunting? I think so, but doubtless it will be back again next season. Maybe this experience will help him grow up.
No mention of Newton's inexplicable failure to dive on his own fumble with four minutes left, when he clearly had the chance to do so. The way Denver's defense was playing it may not have mattered, but at that point they were down 6, had the ball and 4 minutes on the clock. Denver's fumble recovery put the game out of reach. And Newton could have prevented it but, for reasons he'll probably never be able to explain satisfactorily, he chose not to do so.
147
He didn't dive for the ball for the same reason receivers "short arm" the ball when going over the middle: you're likely to get hurt.
Period. End of story.
Period. End of story.
1
The times has a lovefest relationship with Newton, who is black, and makes clear his political views. He got beat by an angry white man.
2
Exactly.
Football Rule Number One: Jump on a loose ball.
Football Rule Number One: Jump on a loose ball.
1
It was Newton's last fumble that will define this game. With a chance to dive on the ball he pulled up and avoided contact This left my wife, no football fan even for this game, to remark, 'he's either a coward or he's been paid off to throw the game.' In the Super Bowl, can a player in the key skill position on offense NOT dive for the ball instinctively. It was a conscious decision. Cam's got some explaining to do. No wait! A Patriots ball boy inserted Kryptonite into the ball at half time. Yeah, that must be what happened

Funny! The game made me yearn for deflategate.
Tip for football investors: short the NFL. They're starting to look a lot like third-tranche mortgage backed securities - but even less interesting.

I watched it a few times on replay and it seemed in that spilt second that another Panther was lunging for the ball and maybe he didn't want to muddle the pile by jumping in.
Didn't look good though!

Define the game? His failue to pounce on the fumble may define his career.
In this age of tv, it is possible, I suppose, that from where he was standing, he didn't have a chance of getting to the ball. Sometimes, though, appearance is all you need. Should have gotten in the scrum.

Stun is a bit of a stretch, or at least for those who were in awe of a Panthers team that won a lot of games against unworthy opponents. Anyway, it was a win for intelligent football, and never count out a Manning.

Unfortunately, defensive football can also be boring football, especially when compared to playoff games. It's just not too exciting for people (especially casual football fans) to watch big guys pounding each other to dust at the line of scrimmage.
Worst superbowl ever? Mistake filled play. Even worse officiating. Missed and poor calls. They cannot even make the right call with instant replay and review. The league cannot define a catch. Talib should have been ejected for throwing the other player out by his face mask. With all the injuries a game whose time is passed.

That was a brilliant play by talib. Take the penalty to stop the touchdown. Great play. There was no injury. You seem awfully sour about the outcome.

There have been worse SB's than this one. I'd rather watch a game like this one than a fifty point blowout. Both defenses played well, and Carolina had several opportunities to score. Calling this game the "worst ever" is a little bit premature IMO.

Well said!
And thanks to Peyton Manning mentioning the exact brand twice, we are all well aware of what he's drinking tonight. Seems he'll be getting a little extra for those plugs, no doubt.

Probably, but for years it was "I'm going to Disneyland" and that was cool. Haters gonna hate.

@Here - No. Disneyland wasn't cool. I hated the cooperate shilling even then...
Love Peyton, but that left a sour taste in my mouth.

Just the kind of game the 50th Super Bowl needed. I am happy that Peyton Manning can end his career with such a record of respect by his peers and performance in the books. I was touched that, before the end of the game, Jordan Norwood of the Panthers went over to Manning as he left the field for the last time to congratulate him.

That would be Josh Norman from the Panthers.
Wasn't it Josh Norman who congratulated Manning? Yeah, it was nice to see Peyton win a second Super Bowl. His career looks so much better now with 2 rings.
Uh, that would be Josh Norman,Jordan Norwood is a Bronco...
Apart from the game, which was fun & surprising to watch, I congratulate all the people who helped make the half-time program so exceptional! I was pleasantly shocked by looking at all the fans in the stadium who had certain colored lights shining on them during the half time program as depicted in pic 5 on this web page. I also thought Lady Gaga did an excellent job singing and it was refreshing to hear her sing more conventional.

Cold Play was awful. Bruno and Beyonce were fun and exciting to watch. Lady Gaga was nothing short of great.

Again, good defense beats good offense. And it made good offense look pretty lame doing so. For a long period, the fumble recovery in the end-zone made a close game look much less so, but Carolina never seemed to have the confidence that could have elevated their game.
You need to be confident to be calm enough to see the open man anywhere on the field, even while the defense is bearing down fast.
Joe (Cool) Montana could do that. If the 9ers needed it, in a big game, even a fan like me would be confident that Montana could get two touchdowns in the last two minutes. And you know why? Because the 9ers also had a fantastic defense that could give him the ball back 3 downs and punt.
Congratulations, Peyton. Retire at the top!

The headline should be Broncos stun media, including NYT who were all calling for comfortable win for the Panthers. Seemed like nobody saw the AFCCG where NE/Brady took a beating. And no that game was not even close to being a 20-18. There should have been a few fumbles but Brady was just about getting it out.
Tonight's game, Cam/Carolina wasn't that lucky. Fumbles, interceptions, and there you have it, complete beat downs two games a row for 2 star quarterbacks.

Agreed. The sports writers, sometimes all year long, get it wrong -- I think they actually stop paying attention except for the pivotal games -- and then exclaim in 38 pt font that it was an extraordinary upset. Gosh!
The same incompetence on the writers' part was evident when Denver beat the Packers in the Superbowl back in the late 1990s. It wasn't the huge upset that the writers made it out to be; they simply had to divert attention from how wrong they had been for most of the football season.

Three star quarterbacks, don't forget what they did to Rothlesberger.
3
The Puppy Bowl had better offense.

Maybe it was a fairy tale for the Broncos. This reader could hardly stay awake. What a crashing bore! Too bad Helen Mirren wasn't on the field - she would have known how to kick some a..

The NY Times sports writers should be ashamed! They showed their lack of knowledge of football and just went with the headlines and no depth. Shame on you!

Hi Patty,
Let us all follow Peyton and Big John E's example and be gracious winners, OK?
Happy in Orange tonight!

Peyton Manning, Eli, Brett Favre, Joe Montana, Joe Namath, the names go on-and-on have had fun without disrespecting the game and their opponents. The question about why Cam is so polarizing comes down to his attitude, his arrogance. What about his choice of Auburn when his parents got $100K for him to go there? Nothing to do with him, of course.
If you think this is just a racist rant. Johnny Manziel is another example of a guy who has everything and chooses to disrespect himself and his opponents.
Who is this Bill Pennington guy? Used to to a leftist apologist for NY Politicians and now a "sports authority" making excuses for poor baby Newt. Unfortunately, like Newt, makes a living being a pretty-boy apologist for the left. Makes tons of money acting like he's a real journalist. If you go from being a reporter on politics and suddenly an expert on a sullen moron in football.
I'm about done with you folks.
