Perhaps superficial, but... It's nice to see senior executives well dressed at work! And, evidently doing good job.

Besides captivating the City with spot-on headlines, the Daily News accomplished a feat which no other entity has been able to do thus far. It united Governor Cuomo and Mayor DeBlasio to pen a statement in defense of our great city against the vitriolic attack launched by Ted Cruz! For one magical day, the Daily News became the peacemaker in the otherwise on-going "Daily Feuds" between the 2 NY leaders!
3
The single greatest front page headline ever was found on the Daily News back in 1980. In the wake of the transit strike settlement, the cover read "Sick Transit's Glorious Monday".
Brilliant!
Brilliant!

We haven't seen a lot of Sarah Palin since the "I'm With Stupid" headline. Oh, ambivalence!!!

Lordy. I'd forgot the News existed.
A lifetime or so ago, living with my parents on the Island (Williston Park), I took very ill and ended up in hospital for a long time. Very long for a nine-year-old kid with the tonsils thing.
But the infection subsided and the routine was OK so I was released. (I can still taste that horrid Listerine!) The date was September 1, 1939.
To this day (I'm an 86 widower now here in Saratoga CA), I remember the huge, black and white headline in the News:
"Hitler Invades Poland"
Should be a Collector's Item.

Rebirth? They just cruelly fired 20 staffers who were told their jobs were safe with no warning. Try death rattle.

Up here in the urban "Great White North" (ie. Toronto), we have FOUR dailies, the Toronto Star, Globe & Mail, National Post and Toronto Sun. The Toronto Sun is our tabloid, struggling to survive in the same manner as the NYC equivalents.
The only difference is one of ownership. The owners of the Toronto Sun recently sold out to the owners of the National Post in a controversial deal that includes a number of newspapers across Canada. Of course, given the fundamentals of the newspaper business and the current problems besetting the industry overall, the deal is unsustainable in the long run. The current head of the newspaper group recently tried explaining his strategy, only to be criticized by the head of the group owning the Toronto Star.
In many cities across Canada, two dailies are owned by the same acquirer and are now sharing office space and editorial content (using tweaks in the column to justify uniqueness). It is my hope that the National Post (a broadsheet) and Toronto Sun (tabloid) do not share articles and editorial content.
Or perhaps they should...when deciding which paper to purchase I would ask myself if I wanted a silly front cover or something resembling actual news...

This piece made me think of how much I miss Jon Stewart.

Most of the article, and most of the Commenters, ignore or gloss over the real heart of this story (a very sad one):
"These covers can now reach more people than they ever did on the newsstand. The problem is that readers don’t have to pay to see them. For all of the attention The News’s recent front pages have drawn, it’s unlikely that they — or perhaps anything — can rescue the paper from its precarious financial position. It’s a familiar story. The News’s circulation has been plummeting for years; it sits at about 241,000 on weekdays. It seems far-fetched to imagine that the paper will ever capture enough digital advertising to offset the declining revenue from its shrinking print base."

I've long read both the Times and NYDN daily to get the two tales of the City since both covered different strata of events, the Times more elitist and the News more populist. But as the News devolved further into the trash bin focusing on salacious stories and celebrity high jinks I stopped reading it with one exception, everyday I read The Voice of the People just to remind myself of what I m about to face when I go out there. Like the woman who wrote in response to a letter published from a 4th grader in Indiana requesting people send him information on NYC for a class project, claiming she wouldn't be fooled by a terrorist seeking information on a potential target. That's one of many. They print at least one head-shaker like that a day.
The Daily News in its original form was the grit of NYC, there are few places to find that anymore, the closet I think is EV Grieve.
I'm pleased to see they have drifted away from the more tawdry celebrity based trash and back to substance. I hope they survive.

My dad made sure that we still got the Times, the Daily News, and the local fishwrap after the family moved from the city to upstate. I loved that they were the real, thick, NYC versions and not the wan thin ones you could find on the newsstands in the sticks.
In the 60's, MAD magazine did a hilarious comparison of the same events as they would be covered by the Times, and then by the Daily News.

I hate to suggest the obvious... but if you sold a tiny ad space on those great covers that are tweeted to millions... wouldn't that just make your financial problems disappear?
A terrible sell out? I'd rather see those great covers (and I see a lot) with a small ad than not see them at all.
Like Trump says, you have to win. What would he do? A lot that would disgust you. But he would change the rules, reorganize who reads you. That's what those covers are doing, grabbing people who just don't read tabloids.
You got a good thing going. Keep breaking the rules.

The New York Times, The Daily News. Thanks folks. You've got character... and class. .. I'm in a New York State of Mind.
4
Here from Montana, I love the NYDaily News and the NYTimes on line. Go figure.
3
I read the times, post and daily news everyday for different reasons. What is sad is how these once great papers are all dying a slow death. When I see any newspaper riding the subway, I'm amazed. One day, there will be no ink.
1
I started buying the NY Daily News once again after they lowered the price to $1.00, it was awkward trying to buy it for $1.25.
2
What used to be parody, i.e. "The Onion" is now reality "The NYDN". Yes, you used to have to make this stuff up.
1
I read the News and Post online for sports. But, I've been pleasantly surprised to see the progressive bent of the former, lately. Even sports guy Lupicka has been very articulate against gun nuts. I then go to the times for everything. The News and Post are free. The Times is not, but well worth the price.
The NY Daily News is a worthless rag - destined to die.
Their supermarket tabloid approach shows a desperate grasp for life, except it won't work. No one buys the paper. The NY Post has buried the loser paper.

Sip your tea with the Times
Have a beer with the News.

I loved the Cosby headline. Why can't they sell on-line subscriptions? Seems the best way to survive....

The "tabloid attitude" feeds the ugly side of humanity. Let it go, let it go. And paper news is a waste of trees. So let it go.
Now if the News wanted to relevant it could start a serious discussion about all the candidates running for office. Publish detailed and accurate histories of anyone who wants the public trust. Where is the real reporting? Calling stupid people stupid is lame and childish.

Growing up, the Daily News was the only paper in the house. My grandfather would scour the sports pages, the opinion section and cartoons, and was a devoted follower of Jimmy Breslin. The comics were great, too. It was always full of photos, and this emphasis lives on.
When the "I'm with Stupid" headline came out last week, I laughed out loud, and shared it with my office colleagues who found it hilarious as well. Despite the paper's Zuckerman ownership (and his apparent lack of belief and support of the enterprise), it's great to see that the paper is once again "swinging for the bleachers." Keep up the good work, Mr. Rich!

A great headline from a long time ago: When former child actor and current star Jackie Coogan's luggage was stolen, which contained his hairpiece: THIEF STEALS COOGAN'S BLUFF. For those of you nor born last century, Coogan's Bluff was a name for the old Polo Grounds.
Well, it was hilarious at the time.
Sigh.

My father was a printer for the Daily News for many years. When I was a little kid he brought the paper home from work every morning ... printing was a night-shift job ... and we all read it. I loved the comic strips, everything else went over my head. At some point Dad decided the News was a bad influence on pre-adolescents and stopped bringing it home. That's when I started to read the New York Times, which he approved of. In memory of my father, I hate to think of the News going under. It's as if he worked for the most successful buggy-maker in New York.... but one that might transform itself into a successful maker of, oh, smart cars?
4
I am tempted to drop NYT for The Daily News
22
That would be like swapping a Mercedes for a Volkswagen.
3
no way...it would be more like swapping a volvo for a muscle car!
3
Please! You're simply praising the News with faint damnation. Too faint. Like other such tabloids, this one wastes far too much print on celebrity "news" (the more hedonistic the better) and local homicides (the more gruesome the better). There is barely any reporting on situations that the public actually needs to be aware of (the economy, the war against ISIS, environmental catastrophes, etc.), let alone informed analysis or enlightened commentary on any of them. Plus, there's Mort Zuckerman's obsessive preoccupation with Israel and rejection of any criticism of its government. Certainly, the paper is less obnoxious than Murdoch's rag, the NY Post, but that's a pretty low bar to be judged by. (Also, minus Bill Madden they no longer have a decent sports section!)
7
Best NYDN caption every was of a track meet back when the timekeepers stood on bleachers, each responsible for an individual lane. Picture showed all timers holding their stopwatches while a cluster of runners reached the finish line. The caption: These are the souls who time men's tries. And with that, I fell in love with the language and became a writer.
49
"I'm with stupid" should be the headline of the year. And the year just started. Keep up the good work.
11
i've been loving the recent nydn covers... but they've already reached peak cover... nothing is going to best miss liberty flipping the bird to rafael cruz...
7
As they say, you had me at "I'm with stupid"
13
Headless Body in Topless Bar (the Post) is still the pinnacle. I"m With Stupid comes close, though. Go News...
15
No way this glowing article is written is NY Daily News veered to right. So NYT is not much better in letting political view drive the way an allegedly unbiased article is written.
1
In a new world where inane and insane messages are equally common and our president actually "tweets", is anyone surprised that the Daily News is making a comeback? Wait and see, New York, one day they will replace the Times as our paper of record. And for what it's worth, I liked the "CRAZY, STUPID LOVE" over "I'M WITH STUPID".
4
In order, Daily News, Post, Times, Huffington, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, Daily Beast, Washington Post, BBC every morning and checking in throughout the day. For starters that is. Loving the trend at the News!! Keep it coming!
5
Daily News is a nasty, obscene and classless tabloid, they can't even be loyal to their own New York's football team. Nothing to learn, nothing to read, caters to the lowest and the stupidest of the people's impulses.
3
Love to read the Daily News years ago : My father used to pick it up from the Subway trash can to save some money for me to read it. I hope they can go digital like The New York Times. I am rooting for them to succeed.
15
the nydn already appears in digital form (nydailynews.com). for now, no subscription is required.
2
Good on you NY
9
This paper has me laughing! I live in PA and the headlines captured me! KEEPGOING, you can do this better than anybody. I am going to buy the paper b sugar if he headlines!
5
Good luck! It would be a shame to lose the News, we need it as a counterweight to the Post.
16
It's surprisingly delightful to see the comments so far all expressing enthusiasm for the Daily News - especially from readers of the Times --
Like others - I read the Times in depth on-line - but make sure to pick up a hard copy of The News as I head downtown -
Excellent sports, comics, and some local news which sometimes falls through the cracks of the Times' city coverage -- and it doesn't hurt that the price has recently dropped back to one-dollar...a move to compete with their rival NY Post, I imagine --
Also -
Ironically, as I read this article and write my comment - there's a wonderful film noire from 1952 on TV right now called "Scandal Sheet" starring Broderick Crawford and Donna Reed, among others...
"Scandal Sheet tells the story of newspaper editor Mark Chapman. He's the head of a tabloid-style newspaper in New York city. His goal is simple – keep increasing the circulation by any means possible.
The headlines on the paper are great. Instead of the [Kardashians and Oprah] headlines in today's N.Y. tabloids, it runs equally sleazy stories about the “Gorilla Man killer” and teenage sex scandals.
The paper runs a “lonelyhearts” ball – matching up pathetic loners from all over the U.S. so Chapman can again get the city talking about his lurid headlines..."
http://www.noiroftheweek.com/2007/10/scandal-sheet-1952.html
Which goes to show that certain human appetites remain consistent over decades -- even if the methods of delivery change over time --

Maybe the News is changing?! But for the better?! I'll wait! It certainly will never be like it was in the days of the bull dog edition, when we all stood the night before on eighteenth avenue in Bensonhurst, waiting at the newsstand for their truck to arrive!... But maybe someone can answer this?! For all their invective against guns, why back in April, on the same day they had an article appearing celebrating FDR High Schools 50th Anniversary, on that same page beneath, they had a child holding a mock sub machine gun, at a trade show?!!!

I still remember a classic Daily News headline from summer of 1972:
"Zippies Zap Yippies, Call 'Em Gyppies"
It accurately summarized the story: The Zippies were a more radical wing or offshoot of Abbie Hoffman's and Jerry Rubin's Yippies, a flamboyant protest group. When some Zippies got arrested for civil disobedience of some kind, the Yippies refused to bail them out of jail, even though Zippies claimed they shared a common bail fund. At least that's how I remember it -- but I'll never forget the headline.

My favorite NEWS headline of the nineties was published a day after OJ Simpson was detained and was being questioned by homicide police in California. Over a grainy photo of detectives grilling Simpson in an interrogation tank, the headline read: "Cops Squeeze O.J."

What's in the Daily News?
I'll tell you what's in the Daily News.
Story about a man who bought himself a small newspaper and then got some great staff members!

We should cheer any big city newspaper able to survive in these times. While tabloids like the Daily News get a bad rap -- often deservedly -- they still play a important role in the urban press. They crusade for improvements in everyday living conditions, offer an entertaining populist counter-balance to the dull elite press, write short lively stories and present vivid and color photos and graphics. So keep on truckin' Daily News!
42
Nobody, no copy chief, no aspiring copywriter at a big ad agency, can consistently write better copy then the editorial staff of the of the Daily News.
That cover of Trump and Taylynn is priceless--down to the teaser for another story inside, "Clon runs for President". I mean you can't make this up.
I feel sad the paper may soon be on the block, as creative as they are. To be sure you can't keep giving your product away for free online, but still ... When a picture (and headline) are worth a 1000 words, is too bad they can't get more folks to pay for them.

Good God, fat finger syndrome. "Taylynn" means Palin, and "Clon" means clown.
3
Heck, even without subscribers papers--including the NY Times--make money by being an online ad delivery system.

You missed one. 'write better copy THAN the editorial staff'
Sorry, just feeling snarky this morning.

I hope their pithy covers draw subscribers.
"I'm with Stupid"....lol.

Interesting to see this- for the first time in... ever, I went to the Daily New's website yesterday for the very reasons stated here, curiosity about what appears an editorial shift. Keep it up News, orient yourself precisely towards the Bernie Sanders left and "if you build it, they will come." At least I will.
16
also went to dn yesterday to see if it picked up nyt story, but no go. some of dn's stories are from nyt, & are credited, but not this one.
I might be one of those who don't hold a copy of The News in my hand, but I held many while growing up in NY. It was the first newspaper for immigrants like my parents, and I read it after dad. Many in our generation "graduated" to the Herald-Tribune and Times, but we still read The News. Best of luck and let's have more headlines. I'll post this story on Facebook.
14
Crowd-sourcing anyone? I've come to appreciate the breadth of opinions and viewpoints that different news media present- even if I don't always agree. Would hate to see them go-
4
I love the snark!
10
I'm surprised and disappointed this fine article wasn't accompanied with more examples of recent and old-time Daily News front pages.
8
Back in the early '70s my 8th grade English teacher told our class that the NY Times was too left wing, his daughter was forbidden to read it and the only newspaper allowed in his house was the Daily News. As a consequence of his statement I have never read the Daily News. They have some good headlines, though.
1
Trump 70 beats both stale media and ancient us political party system. Will that fit on a front page?
1
Even this Upstate New yorker found Cruz's values comment so insulting. Greatest cover responding.
8
Love the new covers. I've started buying it off the newsstand.
11
Wow how shallow are the commenters here. All of a sudden a trashy paper is their cup of tea because it veers left. As independent I am totally for gun control and anti the angry Trump but I also can call trash trash when it comes to papers. Menkin was right that nobody every went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people based on those commenting here.
1
That would be...Mencken. For those who care about 'intelligence.'
2
The news industry has GOT to find a way to make more money online. Print is "ovah." It's a matter of "adapt or die."
Charge more for bigger, badder, more intrusive advertising. (I'm still free to avert my eyes & mute the audio, just as my dad used to turn down the sound on TV commercials & we'd all go get a snack or feed the dog. Advertisers have always paid for the *chance* of alerting potential consumers to the existence and names of their products, not of the certainty of it.) Charge viewers a small fee (except for some need-to-know news stories), & a larger one for commentary & features.

Way to go Daily News. Survive! My dad read the paper in his gas station on Long Island for 40 years. Always started on the back sports cover. Wish I could subscribe here on Maui.
12
The "I'm with stupid!" headline is hilarious (and so true).
22
My fave, when Johnson & Johnson bought the struggling Jets: Band-Aid for Gang Green.
1
The Daily News is the new Onion. And they don't even have to make it up.
23
The Daily News is The Onion without the irony.
20
They don't mention the increasingly racy pix of near-naked women. They should at least balance it out with an equal number of guys in tight Speedos.
23
I grew up in Brooklyn, the son of a New York City police officer. When my father told one of us kids to go to the corner store and get the paper, we all knew he meant only The Daily News. Fast forward to 2016 and all i can say is, this is not my father's Daily News. Not by a long shot.
6
Thank Goodness!
2
The NYDN Internet edition recently eliminated all reader comments from the website.
They realize the ridiculous headlines and related articles, like blaming a victim of the San Bernadino massacre for the event, meant they were spending more time moderating and deleting comments and that the tone of the paper is in a different dimension than the readers.

The News is a great paper. I usually look at it on line at least a couple of times a week. After reading this story, I may start buying it.
35
one of the drawbacks to the most recent digital version of the nydn is that it has excised readers' comments. previously, brain matter might have been singed by some of the commentary, but at least it existed. no more. too bad. miss it, in all its vitriol.
15
I hope that
Post Won't Be Toast
soon.
Post Won't Be Toast
soon.
10
I'm rooting for them. The recent covers have been brilliant and brave. And that we need more of.
97
Go Daily News! Keep those headlines coming!
71
The News' "populist" tradition was tied to the paper's focus on stories about the city's neighborhoods. After they closed their borough bureaus, I stopped making a point of reading the News. I like the covers, though "issues" (and a liberal use of Photoshop) are a thin substitute for stories with characters. The News' campaign for gun control is welcome, but please tell me something I don't know.
22
I have the Times home delivered every morning but pick up the News at the bodega downstairs on my way to the subway. You've got to read both of them to really know what's going on. I hope they both live forever.
71
Amen.
2
They make more on delivery and it's a receivable for their books..consider subscription?
1
Great paper for local news and they sock it to those who deserve it...good sports pages now a dollar down from $1.25..support it.. great voice and funny too.A really good bad habit.
50
I wish them well. NY needs - at least - three healthy dailies.
61
I hope they make it. I'll even start buying it again, after a couple of decades (at least) of managing to live without it.
That "FORD to NY - DROP DEAD" was by far the best headline I ever read.

54
"Headless body in Topless Bar" is certainly a close second. No - "Headless" is best
9
"hinck's shrink stinks" was also noteworthy.
3
How about "Headless Body in a Topless Bar?"
1
A welcome antidote to the poison spread by the NY Post
