I'm a displaced New Yorker, now living in VA, who reads this column every day. I love it. I also enjoy the reader comments and the song of the day. Makes my mouth water for a real hot dog with mustard and warm, juicy sauerkraut from Nathan's.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all at New York Today! -- You provide a much needed respite from all the gloom that seems to occupy the news these days..
Steve (New York)
The general amnesia about Evacuation Day should remind us how fleeting is the importance of events once considered to be of great significance. For a long time after the Civil War, Appomatox Day, marking the end of the war, was celebrated, at least in the North and V-J day marking the end of WWII was also celebrated for awhile.
It always amazes me to watch the BBC news during November that its personnel wear poppies to remember the end of WWI.
Americans seem much more amnestic about events in their history.

You have that right! In my 66 years here I've never even heard of Evacuation Day.

I guess that nothing here is really a holiday unless alternate side of the street parking is suspended!

Agree with Sharsheem. Guess you guys have earned the day off, but just one day off – okay? :)

Tune of “Theme from New York, New York”

Keep spreading the word
There’s something to say
Each morning, you’re the start of it - New York Today

Hey haven’t you heard
Morning’s more than okay
Since you’ve become a part of it - New York Today

We’re gonna wake up
On that day when you get to sleep
So glad that Friday you’re back
Giving us tips, stories so rich, fun that is cheap

While cooking that bird
Let’s give a hooray
For the folks who get right to the heart of it - New York Today:
And - as long as you are there
With news and views to share
Give thanks for you –
New -
York Today!
