lots of little cats feet in 1895 !
What about the handicap placards? They are probably the most distracting of all...and so many people ride with them hanging from the rearview mirror...

"What about the handicap placards?"
The NYS blue handicap tags - which are not valid for parking on NYC streets, anyway - have this cautionary note:
REMOVE FROM REARVIEW MIRROR WHEN DRIVING

New York’s Vehicle Traffic Law, §375.30: “It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle with any object placed or hung in or upon the vehicle”
As it should be, enough distractions already, focus on the road!

Did not know about that law. I stick my EZ-pass device on my windshield. Am I going to be ticketed for that?
Hi there,
You and another commenter both asked questions about the legality of E-Z Passes. A quick perusal of their website shows that there is a proper method of placement for E-Z Passes, which appears to be behind the rearview mirror, therefore not blocking any view. Their website does say, "If the tag is not properly mounted, it may not work and may be unlawfully positioned."

Thanks for writing in, and I hope that helps!

That does help. Thank you for doing the extra research that I was too lazy to do!

That was fine on a 1999 Suburban, but newer cars have a mesh on the windscreen where the mirror is placed. Florida says that interferes with its toll passes, I have placed my EZpass next to it, not behind the mirror. I guess that could be a problem, if a low flying aircraft tries to land in front of me. Will it be a problem with NYPD?
what about EZ pass devices?
Is it illegal to hang those air fresheners from the mirror? Good. I wished it was illegal to just carry those little toxic bombs in taxis. The majority of these fresheners are loaded with harmful chemicals, from phthalates to formaldehyde, that can cause a wide range of illnesses. I can't stand that strong chemical smell, which is anything but fresh. I have to open the windows anytime I use a taxi with one of these, and I feel so sorry for those drivers breathing the toxic fumes for hours everyday.

"New York Today" could be more prominently positioned on the website, I think. I used to read both "The Daily Briefing" and this only in the phone, but now, as I'm seeing it at my desk more often, I think it's sad many must miss this enjoyable slice of the apple. It's really too good to not show off some more! Seriously. Thank you.

I get it as a daily email in my in box, so no hunting. [just remember to add address to your contact list so it won't go to junk or spam or something like that.]

Of course that is possible, but it is a different issue from having it more prominent on the paper's site. I like to keep my news-reading separate from my e-mails, and I agree with Christopher that it deserves greater prominence as I skim the headlines. As do the paid death notices on the obituaries page: for their importance and expense, they are breathtakingly well hidden. Not even their own headline.

"The long nose of the law."
The fine for those little trees is $150? Really, officer, I didn’t know!!!
(tune of 7-1/2 CENTS, or should it be 7-1/2 SCENTS)
The figures are out, the figures are out
For a little pine-fresh air, the figures are out
A hundred fifty dollars doesn't buy a heck of a lot,
A hundred fifty dollars doesn’t go too far,
But charging it for every time, every time that I get stopped
That’s enough to get this guy cleaning up the car
The figures are out, the figures are out
With the statutory fine, the figures are out
If I’m stopped two times a week
If I’m stopped two times a week
I can see real money going
If I’m stopped two times a week
A hundred fifty dollars doesn't buy a heck of a lot,
A hundred fifty dollars, not much I suppose
But charging for it every time, every time that I get stopped
That’s enough to make me feel – I’m paying through the nose.
