Brilliant...yes Hillary Clinton is very very intelligent....and yes there is a
horrendous caveat about ....being intelligent...and unethically clever as well.

I put a high priority on clever...on brilliant...innovative...and high IQ...but
the highest priority is being ethical...and in this category Hillary does not
make the grade....
Just think how clever, brilliant and innovative....those without a conscience
can be....and then....make the comparisons with anyone seeking our
highest political office...of President of The USA......
Madeline (Florida)
Give me some examples o Hillary Clinton not being ethical. If you decide to do so details please and no newspaper condemnations
marian (New York, NY)
These are perilous times.
They remind us that we entrust the president with our very survival.

Consider:
– 2/3 of the electorate view Mrs Clinton as dishonest & untrustworthy.
– Paris put Benghazi into stark relief.
– Mrs. Clinton is the architect of the global Armageddon King Abdullah, the Pope & the Generals call the start of WWIII.
– The Clintons have a history of unleashing global terror. (The ISIS precursor.)
– Post-Paris all women, rich & poor, young & old, black, white & brown, red & blue, are security moms.

The obvious question then:
Is there anyone left to vote for this woman?

"I remember exactly what happened. Bruce Lindsey said to me on the phone, 'My God, a 2nd plane has hit the tower.' And I said, 'Bin Laden did this.' that's the 1st thing I said…I thought that my virtual obsession with him was well placed & I was full of regret that I didn't get him."

"You know, the job which we should have done, which should have been our primary focus, to find bin Laden and eliminate al Qaeda."

“The president seems to be able to deny facts with impunity. Bin Laden is alive today because Mr. Clinton, Mr. Sandy Berger & Mr. Richard Clarke refused to kill him. That's the bottom line.... [T]hey had 8 to 10 chances and they refused to try."

I love teasers even though I didn't marry one. What's with the pop up? Oh, sell your existing customers something? I'm aware when I bought newspapers in the past, there were ads - and I had to do something: turn the page. What with other accusations in these comments sections about balanced coverage (Bernie comes to mind), I'm closer to shutting down my subscription than I've ever been.
David Chowes (New York City)
MRS. CLINTION IS AN EXPERIENCED AND BRILLIANT POLITICIAN . . .

...so when asked about her close ties to Wall Street and the big banks ... her allusion to helping them during the 2007-08 financial crisis she is fully aware of the huge percent ignorant electorate ... and any one with a modicum of common sense and knowledge never believed her response ... but admired her formidable skills as a politician.

To tell the unvarnished truth becomes the death knell of most pols.
mdnewell (<br/>)
It occurs to me, after listening to this chat, that Hillary Clinton is always and forever compared to Bill Clinton as a campaigner. No other politician is measured against Bill Clinton. Who could possibly come close to living up to the standard set by the greatest campaigner in American politics in living memory? It seems one more reason why Hillary Clinton is at a disadvantage compared to her opponents, right out of the gates.
MGL (Baltimore, MD)
Being for change and being able to make change happen are two different things.
I admire Bernie Sanders’s ability to speak truth to power; his message about the corruption of our democratic processes through the power of big money is absolutely true. There are also hazards like gerrymandering, the Hastert Rule, and the sabotaging of the Voting Rights Law that add to our problems.
But I will vote for Hillary whose state, national, and worldwide experience and lifelong determination to work for what I call the “common good” , simply put her in a more advanced state of preparedness to handle the Presidency. I hope Bernie’s
Impassioned speeches wake up the public. I hope Hillary will have a chance to show what a truly superior woman can do for a country in dire need of political leadership.
Timshel (New York)
You may vote for Hillary, but if she does manage to win, she will not be representing you, unless MGL is another name for a bank or brokerage firm or one of her very large donors. All of Clinton's rhetoric, competence and strength mean nothing when there is such weakness of character. Compare her to Elizabeth Warren or Tulsi Gabbard and Clinton comes up woefully short. Hillary Clinton may talk the talk very well but she doesn't walk the walk.

While the media have tried to create the impression that Clinton is more electable that Sanders, it is just not true. The only polls pitting Sanders against Trump and Bush show him doing better or the same as Clinton! The media are trying to tell Democrats to settle for less, so that Wall Street and corporate America will have their person in the White House whether she or he is a Democrat or Republican. Don't settle for less. Sometimes being "practical" is just giving up on what you are really hoping for.
Madeline (Florida)
Again-other than I suspect you do not want a woman President: explain your text with details instead of the typical hater that copys dubious information.
Robert T. (Colorado)
Thanks. Kinda makes you wish there's a way to vote in favor of Bernie's high-level analysis of what's wrong without asking him to face down Ryan, the Kochs, the GOP Congress, the GOP Supreme Court, or Putin.

But when we put Bush into the WH, we put our rubber stamp on Consumer United, and guaranteed the role of big money in elections. HRC plays ball with those guys. Not only is she far from the worst who do, she might be the best. If she did not she would have no chance, not in our electoral system. The impassioned cries for Bernie sound like they envision another system, another country, or maybe even torches and pitchforks. Quick test: do you find yourself saying 'hell, yeah!' at this notion? Then you have no business voting in our democracy.

There oughta be a role for Bernie. But we don't have one in this country, where president and chief executive are combined in one position. There's a job for yall, calling for all of the enthusiasm and none of the money: make Bernie a star, a force in the US firmament of idea. I suspect he'd be far happier with that role than actually running something more complex than a Vermont congressional staff.
Timshel (New York)
Despite all the cleverness, it is clear that Ryan and Chozick are both very strongly biased in favor of Clinton. This recording explains why there is such poor coverage on the Democratic race for the presidential by the NY Times. Again and again there is an attempt to paint Hillary Clinton as being so human and having some decency. But with all the praise, only someone living in the Caucasus Mountains for the last 40 years, would ever believe that this person has the least shred of ethics. If you listen carefully this recording says that Hillary Clinton is one of the worst opportunists to ever stand on a debate stage, but she is a winner and that is all that counts. Neither thing is true.
Paul (White Plains)
When somebody is able to rationally explain how Hillary Clinton made a profit of $100,000 in one year with a $1000 investment in cattle futures, then maybe her credibility and honesty will rise above the 3rd basement level. With Democrats, that miracle is just another in a long line of Clinton lies that they are ready, willing and able to forgive or conveniently forget.
Michael Thomas (Annapolis, MD)
What I look for is what she says she will do going forward. We all know that she will protect a woman's right to choose. And of course, I particularly like her focus on the family. She is the only candidate with a clear eye on health care costs, costs that threaten the economic well-being of many families. As for Libya and e-mails, these are diversions and they have been addressed. Her vote on the Iraq war, just one of many things on which I disagree with her, but Hillary as a relational person working with the John McCain's and Lindsey Graham's in our government only reminds me that she knows how to work in the real world. And finally, don't forget that the next president will nominate two or three supreme court justices. I trust her to fight for the right appointments.
John (<br/>)
Clinton is too intelligent, educated experienced to have been "fooled" by Bush; this "mistake" was a calculated move to show she was a hawk, tough on terror; ii cost hundreds of thousands of innocent lives; to write off such humanity so as to be "political viable" is a moral failure
Paula Burkhart (CA)
I believe Bernie Sanders to be the preferred choice for all the reasons you state--except he is the only candidate with a clear eye on health care costs and pharmaceutical costs. Hillary only wants to improve the AHCA; Bernie wants single payer. I agree with that stance because as long as health care in this country is controlled by a few huge "providers" we will not see an improvement in the health care status of Americans. Profit doesn't belong in the health care arena. She is a war hawk, now stating that she believes we need troops in the Middle East, and Bernie prefers a coalition of cooperating countries--the only way to go--no more U.S. troops in the Middle East. Bernie also supports the $15/hour minimum wage, Hillary wants $12 (not going to work in expensive states like CA, NY, MA, etc.). Hillary is a wind vane, and she blows with political opinions of Wall Street, Big Banks, Big Pharma, Monsanto, etc., who are the major funders of her campaign as well as the people running it. I simply don't trust her. She hasn't proven herself to be reliable, truthful, or a real Democrat, especially where the middle class is concerned.
Margaret (Florida)
Early in her career she was head of the Children's Defend Fund, as she often likes to state. As First Lady however she gave full support to Bill's collaboration with the Republicans on so-called welfare reform which had the consequence of plunging over a million kids, many of them minorities, into abject poverty. And it wasn't one of those unintended consequence you only learn about later - no, they were warned that this was going to happen and they did it anyway. Wendall Primus quit his job with the Clinton administration over this issue.
Likewise, when her husband was going to sign into law the Bankruptcy Reform Act, Hillary, after being informed by Elizabeth Warren that this law would wreak havoc on poor single mothers, at the last minute averted the law from passing. As Senator of NY, when this bill came before her again in 2000, she signed it. (Warren revealed this in an interview with Bill Moyers back in 2004.)
These are just 2 examples illustrating Hillary Clinton's remarkable willingness to throw entire groups of people under the bus when it has become expedient for her to do so.
johnandrechak (montana)
Clinton's supporters tout her intelligence, education, experience, except when it comes to her war vote; then they, stridently, argue that Bush fooled her; please. Clinton, like millions of Americans, like hundreds of millions of people world-wide, knew he was lying; her vote was to protect herself against looking soft on terror, a political expediency that cost hundreds of thousand of lives; for such heinous act she is morally unfit for any office, let alone the presidency
CBRussell (Shelter Island,NY)
The phrase you use about Hillary..."political expediency"...really says what
Hillary Clinton is...and no more than this....Hillary is now and always has been
for promoting Hillary...not you...not me...not women.. not peace....not anything
but...foremost and beyond all other considerations beyond the one and only
priority for Hillary Clinton...is in FOR Hillary above and beyond anyone or anything
else..
and I would say that is the wrong profile for President of The USA..
Andy F. (Montreal)
A fascinating look inside the Hillary Clinton Campaign, onboard her premier promotion vehicle: the NY Times.
Unless an equivalently eloquent video essay is in the works for her opponent, Mr. Bernie Sanders?
Paul (Bellerose Terrace)
Patrick Healy was asked about the relationship between Hillary Clinton and the press.
Healy: "Hillary Clinton thinks reporters are interested in the story behind the story, and that's not true."
Which he said with a presumably straight face while discussing the story behind the story on a Times Insider podcast. The ultimate meta moment.
Rupert Laumann (Utah)
Suggestion for Hillary: Offer to appoint Elizabeth Warren as Secretary of Commerce. That would defuse the "too close to Wall Street" argument. Not sure she'd do it but it seems like a good idea to me...
MiMi (Bethesda, Md.)
Nothing will defuse the "too close to Wall Street" argument, she is already in too deep with the banks - hence her refusal to reinstate Glass-Steagall Act.
Paula Burkhart (CA)
She doesn't have the nerve or will to do this.
smford (Alabama)
Only one group of Americans hates Hillary more than conservative radicals -- liberal radicals.
MiMi (Bethesda, Md.)
It is impossible to respect someone like Hillary Clinton when the contrast between she and Senator Sanders is so stark with regards to honesty and integrity !
James (St. Paul, MN.)
I am happy that the Times is trying new approaches to presenting the news, but........Honestly, this seems like another stunted and awkward attempt to prove that Ms. Clinton is authentic----which (if you care to know) failed miserably, like each of her campaign's prior attempts to convince us we are all quite mistaken in thinking we know the "real" Ms. Clinton. We have plenty of history to show us what Ms. Clinton believes and who she cares about. Sadly, none of the history convinces me that she will care about or represent my family or any other middle class working families. I would respectfully suggest that an in-depth understanding of her true positions and policies is a bit more worthy of the New York Times than her love of jalapeño poppers or aptitude for selfies.
Margaret (Florida)
Exactly. It's kind of ironic that when we lament her lack of authenticity, she resorts to irrelevant and flippant nonsense like preferred snack. Really? Who cares? Someone else who actually IS authentic - well I guess if someone is authentic everybody knows it, there is no need to prove it. If authenticity needs proof, unless we are talking about a work of art, the issue is already dead on arrival.
ben bona (florida)
Stunts, sad? Are you ready for the next President or do you prefer the circus clown that now is the front-runner of the GOP?
Quareb Bey (Cambridge, MA)
Her suggestion to move marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule II, treating marijuana as being on par with cocaine, shows an ongoing disregard for the raging injustice called the War Against Drugs. Marijuana prohibition has ruined far more lives than the actual use of the drug itself could ever have done. My follow on question to her would be where Industrial Hemp, with little to none psycho-active properties, should fall on the Schedule?
TheUnsaid (The Internet)
She really has to answer for her advocacy and support of regime change in the Middle East -- i.e.: Libya & Syria.
Did she learn nothing from the chaos, rise in terrorism, instability, & humanitarian suffering that occurred after the secular dictator, Saddam Hussein, was deposed?
If she explains away her support of deposing Qaddafi & Asad, as: "They were/are bad men and they did bad things" -- that itself should disqualify her foreign policy as yet another continuation of the deplorable neo-con agenda. Imagining oneself the hero by taking out a "bad guy" or needing to "get even" -- where it would not be worth the precious American lives & treasure and/or the humanitarian suffering & blow-back that will follow, is recklessness and hubris that we can no longer afford.
David Underwood (Citrus Heights)
Do you really think she was alone in those decisions?
Was not Qaddafi responsible for Flight 103 bombing and other terrorist acts?
Or do you overlook those things.
Assad is responsible for the breakup of Syria. Instead of making minor reforms, he attacked the groups just trying to make some democratic reforms in line with the Arab Spring. He has sues barrel bombs, and most likely poison gas. He is responsible for the destabilization of Syria. Just like his father, he has created a country that breeds terrorism.

She does not have to answer to those who have little knowledge, and are only trying to find fault where none exists. I guess you just came from a meeting of you local GOP committee.
mh12987 (New Jersey)
In fairness, she supported the overthrow of Qaddafi and Asad after revolutions started in those countries. And aside from verbal support we did next to nothing militarily in Syria (for which, of course, she is also pilloried). Would you have had us intercede in these places to support the dictators, once their own people rose up against them, in the name of maintaining stability? Really there are no easy answers. You take each crisis as it comes and use your best judgment. And, yes, you try to find ways to reduce the number of crises overall. I think she gets that and has those skills. I don't see that any of the other candidates do.
Paul (Bellerose Terrace)
David, just bear in mind that under the Junior Bush Reign of Error, much of whose unconstitutional policies was supported by Senator Clinton, we extraordinarily rendered "terror suspects," a number of whom proved perfectly innocent, to be tortured in black sites, subcontracted by the CIA to "friendly," but brutally repressive regimes. Bashar Al Assad's government was one of those doing torture at the behest of our government.

How come Hillary Clinton never mentions her 8 year tenure as a Board Member of Walmart?

Is she really a friend of labor? How can she possibly get the support of unions?

I just don't understand. Voters please do your research and see how the primate "EVOLVED" into a human.

If I am accused of a white collar crime I want Hillary to be my lawyer. If I want an honest president who stands for the people & not the elite I choose Bernie sanders.
kicksotic (New York, NY)
As a Board Member of Walmart -- and this was when Sam was still alive, so it was not yet the Walmart people love to hate today -- she was instrumental in securing not only higher wages for their workers, but health care for them and their families. Also, as one of the first female Board Members, she successfully fought to have Management bring more women into management positions.

Again, when she was involved, Walmart was not yet the behemoth it is today. And, truth be told, she actually did a lot of good in the midst of a strongly misogynistic situation (read: the South during the 1980s).
Quareb Bey (Cambridge, MA)
Funny that the Republicans don't talk about it either. Perhaps there is a limit to the hypocrisy.
johnandrechak (montana)
thank you! And she speaks of opposing gender discrimination when she stood by as Walmart practiced systematic discrimination against its female employees
Technic Ally (Toronto)
Why is it so hard to comment on real news on the nytimes any more?

Jeb Bush - closed.

Paris attacks - closed, et cetera.

Virtual news with Goggles - Jesus!

Say, could you guys send me a pair?

Good God!

Go Bernie.

Go Hillary 2016
Alex (NY)
I am glad you are for a canidate that followed Bush and Cheney to war, voted for the patriot act, made a mess in Libya and Syria, takes millions from foreign governments that abuse women, has a charity that only 10 cents on the dollar helps anyone, and changes positions based on polls. Vote for a leader, senator Bernie Sanders, not a follower.
