New York Today: Unusual Elections

Interesting that we hear only about the criminal foibles of the former seat holders, yet there isn't an iota of information on the candidates seeking hear vacated seats -- or any other seats for that matter.

If we are to increase voter turnout during local election time, wouldn't it help to actually inform voters on the candidates and the races? I'm having a difficult time finding much dialogue that compares the candidates who are on my local ballot today.

Ditto. It's really hard to make an informed decision on who to vote for when there's barely any information on the candidates whatsoever, or the information is just a press release from the candidate.

Please NYT - for future elections, cover ALL of the candidates in all districts for all positions. Our voter turnout is abysmal because no one knows who to vote for and most don't even understand the responsibilities of the seat up for election.

I really don't understand why schools are closed today. Are the students also expected to vote? Until Election Day is declared a holiday, they should be in school, maybe with emphasis on our democratic system and why voting is important. And it would certainly ease the burden of working parents that have to arrange for child care. As it is, NYC schools get out so late that the summer is half over.

When I was going to public school they used the buildings to house the elections since the voting machines take up a lot of space, and many neighborhoods/districts don't have community centers to use as an alternative.

"3 Men In Room"? 2 of those are under indictment and will be tried. The 3rd stopped the Moreland Commission and cant keep his nose out of NYC politics. Preet Bharara? "Stay Tuned" you said WHEN????

The first round of Brooklyn Heights residents vs. real estate sharks has been lost: The iconic Cadman Plaza library will be severely downsized and stowed into the basement of a new thirty-story residential tower.

For those of you who live in the area, good luck with a giant construction site on a slender, triangular plot at a major intersection.

For those of you who exit the Brooklyn Bridge to veer over to Court Street and destinations south and east, good luck with trying to get through.

For those of you who enjoy browsing through shelves and picking up a good book, or take advantage of the library's esteemed business collection, goodbye to all that.

This tower, and the excrescence that obscures the Brooklyn Bridge rising beneath the promenade, as well as the 36-story condo that's going up where LICH used to be, will probably be as shoddily built as the apartment houses now lining Fourth Avenue. Good luck with your crumbling walls, leeching mortar, leaky roofs, and wet, moldy drywall.

And thanks, Brooklyn Heights community board. Good thing you weren't in office when Robert Moses wanted to run the BQE through your neighborhood.

How I loved that library. I went to see the Atoms for Peace exhibit there. That building should not be torn down. Where is the LPC?

Remember when Cuomo said he was "going to clean up Albany". Well, that never happened. so much for that faux campaign message.

I'd say that since Cuomo vetoed a bill on July 8th that would have, ultimately, saved a town from corrupt redistricting, and after that veto, money flowed to him, no has hasn't "cleaned up Albany." http://www.capitalnewyork.com/article/albany/2015/07/8572342/filings-sho...

Geez, and I thought the corruption in Florida was bad. At least, the feds go after the New York politicians, they get away with it in Florida.

“The mayor’s seemingly personal tweets during the World Series were written by an aide.”
I hear there were some clues about this in the version of the National Anthem that was planned for game 7.

Tune of “The Star Spangled Banner”

Oh say, do you read what de Blasio writes?
What so proudly he nails what New Yorkers are feeling
His bright turns of a phrase light the rapturous nights
And his charm never fails when we all need some healing

But a shock hits the air
When the wit and the flair
Gives proof that the tweets were not sent by the Mayor

Oy vey, all that hornswaggled banter wasn’t made
By the Mayor of N-Y-C!
They’re the words of his aide!

Thank you for the harvest report, Ms. Appleseed, but I want to add the DA races in the Bronx and on Staten Island to the Election Day harvest. Their outcomes (which will not add to our net bushels or apple sauce) could be transformative in two of the city's boroughs. To rework Chicago's poll-place maxim, eat apples and vote early and often, New York.
Robert (Brooklyn)
But that's not as precious and cute as writing about apples.
me (world)
And the DA's race in Nassau County, too. But an apple a day won't keep corruption away....

Hi Robert and Bernardo,

I'm sorry you were disappointed by today's apple report. We did include some statewide election news in the top section, and the last section of this column is usually reserved for less newsy items and things that are of interest to city and state, like our apple production. I hope you keep reading and that maybe you understand my thinking!
