I think a lot of people commenting missed the point of the article. First off, a lot of people come to the US illegaly, but then become legal through certain laws that changed, marriage or other adjustments of status, I am one of those people. I entered the US illegaly and years later became a permanent resident. This is who the article is talking about. About those in the country legally but who have not taken that extra step to become citizens. I took that step about a year after being a resident, I am now a citizen. The fact that Trump said we bring drugs and are rapists is the one reason that I will be sure to vote this election and I will be sure to help and encourage those who qualify for citizenship to do so and vote as well. And you can bet we won't be voting for Trump.

What people don't understand is that US policies are part of the reason why Mexicans are fleeing Mexico: NAFTA cost jobs in the US -- and jobs in Mexico. There are now second and third generation Latino Americans who find the unstoppable arrival of new immigrants a problem. The scrambling for low-skilled jobs have created an enormous downward pressure on salaries and reduced job opportunities. Blacks, who were seeing progress, also see those jobs evaporating for the same reason. These are two large voting blocks who could vote for a man who promises some immigration control rather than none as we have now.

His vision is not to "Make America White Again" but to ensure that the wages of American citizens of every race & color are not depressed by illegal workers who aren't covered by employment contracts, don't pay taxes, etc. American citizens of every race & color (white, black, Asian, Hispanic, etc.) will benefit from more jobs & higher wages (particularly in, for example, the construction industry) while also paying less taxes for Medicaid (e.g., from the hospital costs of babies delivered here, etc) & Food Stamps & other social service benefits.
The only way this can occur is if the border is secured. If the border is left unsecured, we can give citizenship to the current 11 million illegal immigrants but will have another 11 million within a few years because businesses of all sizes have an economic incentive to hire workers at the least cost possible (because they are greedy).

I think most people would agree that illegal immigration is not desirable- and that legal immigration should be the accepted norm for entry into this country.
But that doesn't solve the issue of what to do with the 11 million who are already here illegally. We allowed this illegal migration to occur over the decades- it didn't happen overnight nor did it occur under one presidency. It has occurred in the past and we must now deal with it in a reasonable way.
Regardless of what Trump says in his political rhetoric, he knows as does every other Republican there is no way or stomach for rounding up 11 million people and deporting them back to Mexico and central America- and to all the other countries as well. Think of the image of forcefully rounding up people who have lived here their whole lives and busing them back to Mexico- and it would cost billions. It would be an expensive debacle and diplomatic, PR and humanistic nightmare.
The only sane approach is to get an achievable path to citizenship so these people can pay taxes and become part of society. The next generation will be assimilated instead of perpetuating this chronic shadow underclass which does no one any good and depresses wages and is a drain on social programs with no offsetting taxes. Stop the narrow view. You don't have to to have a big heart- you just have to get over your emotions and get the problem solved so we can move forward.

I live in the Southwest and I think that elites such as this writer don't connect with real people on the ground. Talking to ordinary "Latinos" I've actually found significant support for Trump. And some, while turned off by Trump's bombastic style, like the ideas and wish someone else would carry them out. The other day I met with a Puerto-Rican and a Mexican American and both expressed support for sealing the border going as far as to suggest putting the military on the border. The Mexican-American was an outright supporter of Trump. The bottom line is Latinos are a diverse group. Many if not most are not illegal immigrants or related in any way to recent immigrants, and many do not support amnesty or unlimited immigration and certainly not illegal immigration.

We can hope that the nastiness that is Trump spurs voter turnout among Latinos. The election is still a very long time away and we have very, very short attention spans in this country. For all the efforts of many brave people who led registration and drove new legislation to turn out African American voters a relatively small fraction of the potential pool of voters actually vote. I remain skeptical but hopeful.

If the issue is stopping or reducing illegal immigration the question must be asked of Mr. Trump why he singles out Mexicans. While they are the largest single country where illegals come from according to Pew Research they are 28% of those crossing our borders illegally. I wonder of the remaining 72% whom Trump would accuse of being rapists and criminals. Also according to Pew the number of illegal immigrants residing in the US has declined from about 12.2 million to about 11.2 million since 2006 data. That suggests the number leaving voluntarily plus those being deported exceeds the 350,000 arriving each year. I wholeheartedly believe our immigration laws need more rigorous enforcement. However I cannot take seriously a candidate who singles out this issue ahead of so many other national priorities. Or a candidate who really believes hunting down and extraditing over 11 million people is simple and affordable. I suggest that candidate is delusional at best.

Untrue. Pew Research studies report at different times 52% and 62 % of illegals are from Mexico. Then there are those from Central and South America that pass through Mexico. What you're now seeing in Europe is due to global warming, globalization, and technological advances that displace workers. It will continue, maybe in spurts, but will happen her as well and as has been occurring. I am completely in favor of legal immigration. In fact, one million people legally immigrate to the United States every year.
However, I am against illegal immigration. You can see what fun times the European's are having with a million migrants and refugees illegally crossing into Europe, where these countries will be forced to feed, clothe, house and educate 100s of thousands of culturally and religious dissimilar people, who crashed the European party.
The United States has approximately 12 million illegal immigrants living here right now and for me or anyone else to state that they are against illegal immigration does not make me or anyone else a racist. There are true cultural, societal and economic costs to taking in millions of people who are not living here legally. To say it or write about it doesn't make you a racist or a bigot.

Be careful what you wish for. Here in Texas, we Democrats thought Dan Patrick was too nuts to be elected Lieutenant Governor over the wonderful Hispanic candidate Leticia Van De Putte, but we were so very wrong. Apparently you can never be too nuts for the GOP electorate.
Now, some of the GOP senators (even John McCain!) are saying they will hold their noses and back Trump if he is the candidate. Just as with Patrick, Trump could very well get elected and become our next president. I sincerely hope the Latino community gets involved and comes out in force to prevent that. For all our sakes.

Trump might get the nomination. Clinton would kill him in a landslide. She's much much smarter, more intelligent and highly informed and with real experience. She would destroy him in a debate - assuming the guy is still around of course.
We as a country should take seriously controlling our borders. We have laws to do this and they should be enforced. To most, this may seem like a silly question, but why, for instance, should my little grandchild, who is a citizen of three countries, including one in South America, be identified and counted as a member of any particular ethnic group here in the US? If he were to live in the S.A. country, he would definitely be in a privileged group, and, with two parents having Ivy-League PhDs, will probably be so here. He looks 'white', i.e., is within the wide variance for appearance within that group. Although he will be bilingual, he will speak English without a foreign accent. His forbears on our side have been citizens of this country since its inception, by virtue of their Dutch and English ancestors colonizing New York and later fighting in the Revolutionary War. If DNA analysis is correct, he has Meso-American and Native American ancestors, as well. As one of his parents, thinking aloud, said, should he be identified as Latino? If so, why? If his heritage were Italian, would formally identifying him as a member of that group be necessary?

This is a good point that questions categorizations created for a largely unspoken reasons that would not be considered politically correct today. The Anglo-American view and categorization of race conflicted with that which "hispanic" immigrants (and locals) held. There were two main areas of conflict. For people who are struggling to put food on the table and clothes on their backs, $680 is a lot of money. That is not including legal costs. The paperwork is challenging, too. As someone who grew up in the US and has a master's degree, I found the process of getting my wife her fiancee visa and green card without an attorney a challenging process. USCIS runs things as if everyone has an attorney. They are not user friendly. Perhaps walking a mile in someone else's shoes...

Then they jump through many hoops over a period of years and pay lawyers more thousands of dollars to ensure that citizenship occurs. What kind of $680 are you talking about? My super-educated daughter in law, in this country legally on a variety of visas since her student days, will just get citizenship (we hope) in this month after dealing with immigration requirements for almost 20 years. Even being married to an American citizen doesn't result in an instant passport. Americans don't know how hard it is; the days of getting a job, marching to the courthouse and getting citizenship haven't been in place for 100 years.

The feelings are true regardless of ethnicity. My Canadian wife was content to live on her green card until our son was ready to attend school. Upon noting that the local school board was a bunch of chauvinist, religious wacko, white middle aged men she quickly took the test, became a citizen and has voted in every election since.

Because things are going so well in our border states?
As an American living in Mexico (nowhere else could I survive on Social Security--plus it is a beautiful, welcoming country), Mr. Trump's loathsome comments frighten me. What's to stop Mexicans from taking out their rightful hatred of the Republican anit-immigration rhetoric on me? I guess we gringos are a much smaller part of this country than Mexicans are of the U.S., plus we didn't climb any walls to get here--Mexico made it very easy for us. And it still does. My wife immigrated to the US from Canada, and the cost of obtaining her citizenship was far higher than that, especially if the costs of obtaining temporary residency and then a green card are included. Requirements included a medical exam at our expense by one of a small number of doctors authorized in the state, travel to the DC area half a dozen times for finger-printing appointments during the work day, several immigration appointments during the workday, myriad forms and filing fees, and finally a full workday in the Federal Courthouse, waiting for the naturalization ceremony. When you multiply these expenses by the number of family members, it is amazing that any immigrants can afford the time and money to become citizens.

I have one question - why would a documented, legal Latino immigrant, who spent thousands of dollars in legal fees, and spent years getting their citizenship, be for illegal immigration? Latinos, just like any legal immigrant to this country, should be in favor of better border controls and limiting the influx of illegal immigrants. Before granting another amnesty, we should enact Congressional legislation that empowers states and cities to aggressively enforce federal immigration law. We should amend or reinterpret the citizenship clause to grant birthright citizenship only to children born to U.S. parents. We should also change policy to automatically deny asylum to migrants who enter the country unlawfully before requesting asylum. Once these measures are in place, we should grant citizenship to illegal immigrants enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and permanent resident status to their family members and to other unauthorized immigrants who have established households in the United States.

Trump is a sideshow who is not electable, but his popularity among certain voters and the media attention he is grabbing is an embarrassment to the US. When he loses primaries with the resounding defeat that he is bound to get as the election progresses, perhaps he will begin to realize that the politics of bombast and insult 'don't play in CA' and the many other states that have an integrated mix of people (and people who vote).

Latinos aren't the only ones horrified at Trump's candidacy. His views on women, minorities, greed and the role of government are the opposite of what many Americans believe and support. So, why not get these groups to work together? My thought after reading this article was this: Why not have a funding effort for American citizens to "sponsor" (financially) those who wish to become naturalized U.S. citizens (like many of our ancestors did!)? Why not find a way to connect those of us who care deeply and know American Civics to tutor candidates for naturalization exams? Why not put all of this negative energy into something positive that can make a true difference in people's lives AND our country?

At the end of the day, it took 7-1/2 years and $7,000 in lawyer's fees to get papers for the wife and another 6 years and $6,000 in lawyer's fees before the husband was legal. It wasn't supposed to be like that but our immigration system is very convoluted and very hard to navigate. That's one reason we have so many illegal immigrants.

I would challenge this analysis. Trump is popular among a lot of Democrats (he used to be one just like Ronald Reagan was before he became POTUS) and extremely popular with Independents who seek honest and transparent government and will cross parties to get to it. If he "destroys" the GOP, then so be it. The GOP, like the Democrat Party, has done none of what it promised to do and both need (and will likely get) a good shakeup. I was a teacher for 36 years. Sadly, I found that our own legally born citizens didn't take their education seriously. Many of them were much more interested in pep rallies, expensive cars, and brand-name clothes than in education. I didn't know whether our immigrant students were legal or illegal, but they always worked much harder at academics than our own children did. Often they also worked after school and contributed their earnings to their families instead of to their own wants. I could see even then that they would make great contributions to our country if we would only let them.

Thank you Katherine. Your story needs to be told more. I have worked for many years at a market frequented mostly by Latinos. Many of the vendors are also of Mexican and Central American descent. Their businesses are family owned. Though the parents are sometimes limited in their English, their children are fluent. From a very young age they are included in the running of the business. They learn valuable experience and in doing so are more mature, and well behaved than most kids of their age. They are bilingual, and excel in school. Over time I have seen many succeed as entrepreneurs, engineers, teachers, etc. It all began because their parents insisted they persevere and succeed as Americans.

Living in and around farm and fruit country, it's never the white students (unless their parents are in management) who are out in the fields, picking our fruits and vegetables. It's always the students from families who were at one time or another from south of the border. What those students may lack in formal education, or quality formal education, is more than made up for by their willingness to endure a demanding and lousy job as a step to something better, such as paying for college. They know how to work where so many others do not. And they will go to where that work is. They will do, they are doing, what it takes. Not so the students Sally references.

The problem with ad hominem invectives is that they're usually wrong. That's true here, as well. Trump appeals across all social, educational, gender, and ethnic lines mainly because he is NOT a politician. If nothing else, Trump may help break the cycle of pols who promise the world and deliver nothing. How many more of these can we elect before waking up? BTW, a lot of highly educated people are impressed with Trump because he, like them, is successful and independent and doesn't promise government-paid free stuff to gain votes. Trump, according to a PPP poll, leads all Republican candidates among Hispanics with a 34% favorability record. As he says, Hispanics who are here legally will benefit most from his policies. As for those who are not here legally, well, what difference does it make anyway (as Hillary might say) since they can't vote. Over the past several election cycles both sides have caved to the "threats" from Hispanic leaders and this, in turn, has energized the electorate to go for a non-politician who cannot be bought and paid for by the lobbyists, including those seeking to maintain the status quo on immigration policy. Do you really believe people come here for the free stuff? People come here to work - just like they always have. Then after 3 or 4 generations - they can play J.I.N.G.O with whomever is the current bogeyman.
So I have a different take on this. True, trump has used over the top, in your face rhetoric. And we've all been conditioned that the correct response to that kind of rhetoric is to claim the mantel of victimhood, which the Latino community has done, with nearly the same aplomb and affect as Al Sharpton. However, there must be factions within the Latino community who recall the reasons they came to the US in the first place and who know that the lawless immigration patterns that Trump has come out against will only lead the US to become the very despot nations they fled unless reform is enacted and the sovereignty of the US is restored. Those immigrants who came here legally and who are thinking people understand this and while they may fear the retribution of the Sharpton-esque Latino community leaders for saying so, they know that Trump is right... we must restore legal immigration and the rule of law or risk destroying the standard of living and opportunity that made America an attractive place to emigrate to. Perhaps self interest will prevail over emotional reactions. The problem with Trump and his followers is that they equate all brown skinned people with illegal immigrants. There are many more who live here who are illegal immigrants--some are Asians, others Irish, others from India or Pakistan.

By far, the greatest threat to the sovereignty of the United States is the lobbying of Congress by multi-national corporations and the ability of those corporations to contribute to PACs and Super-PACs without disclosure. Despite the fact that Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Scalia said he supported disclosure, Republicans in Congress just won't pass laws to require it. So, we have undisclosed 'dark' money influencing elections in the USA. And, even with disclosure, we have someone like Sheldon Adelson, who makes most of his money in Macao, contributing to these PACs. Again, money made overseas is given to influence American elections. If there ever were a case for Associate Justice (ret.) John Paul Stevens’ recommended constitutional amendment on campaign finance reform, these factors support such an amendment. And, this applies to liberal or any contributors to these PACs, which frankly are a cancer, along with most lobbying, on what's left of our so-called democratic republic. Republicans say they're patriots, all for the USA, but their actions indicate otherwise. They are not patriots, they don't give a darn where the contributions come from and their actions, or lack thereof, clearly indicate that they don't care one bit about the sovereignty of this country. They're lack of action borders on treason. Where are the voices of reason in the GOP? Apparently, they are either very old or dead.

It's all too easy to just say something's illegal as if that settles it. Laws are put in place to make our society just and prosperous. If kicking out immigrants who are at present here illegally is the best way to achieve that, I'm all for it. But there's a case to be made that justice and our economy would be better served by making many previously illegal immigrants into citizens. Then they wouldn't be illegal anymore.

You are wrong. First, many illegal immigrants were brought here by their parents when they were very young, so technically, they didn't brake any laws themselves. Second, some (but not all) of these parents escaped desperate circumstances. It was more honorable and just to do what it takes to feed their kids. On the Statue of Liberty it says, 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free.' In the Declaration of Independence, it is written, 'All men are created equal and endowed with certain inalienable rights.' There was no time for many of these immigrants to wait for legal status as it may take up to 20+ years in line, when these rights were violated in their own lands. So for Trump and all the bigots out there, no matter how hard you try, you can never erase those words from our Lady Liberty or from our Declaration of Independence.

Latino's need to go to the polls and vote their interests, but they should also be prepared to fight for that right because Republicans are very aggressive in denying the vote to groups that are not white, over 65 and male. To address the economic realities that drive immigration, however, we do need a more effective mechanism for guest workers to be able to legally come here to work.

Those states were sold by Mexico to the USA in the 1800's for 15 million. Native American Indians didn't have claim on the land we call the USA. They were just nomads wandering in 3 percent of the land which is part of the continent North America, which other lands they were in. The White English explorers came in 1600 to all unclaimed and unoccupied and ungoverned land. They were settlers, not immigrants. Immigrants are people that come in a populated society with a government. They took nothing because nothing belong to the Indians. Lots of white people are natives on lands of north America. Of course the elephant in the room is bad law - NAFTA and drug laws - that have forced Mexicans to go North to survive. Trump's plan doesn't fix this but he is one of few Republicans who recognize that there folks in the Mexican government and business that have used these laws to enrich themselves and push people to the US. And the left has been complicit, acting as though all those Mexicans just came here because we have Americans unwilling to work. We need to fix the underlying disease, not the symptoms. Unfortunately Trump is in this respect just another politician that doesn't understand how to fix things, but he comes close when he talks about the folks in power pushing people out - if he made this clear he might actually win over Latinos.

Net immigration from Mexico is currently zero. The Mexican government is not "sending" anyone. If you're going to be anti-immigration at least get your facts straight.

Few comments as I post this, but the majority seem to be anti "illegal" immigration, which under the immediate surface doesn't need the preface illegal to make an unwelcome point.
The Latino community here appears to be a cohesive, clearly integrated community. While in the Latin countries I have visited there appears to be a class structure that in many ways is drawn with lines more sharp and openly enforced than here, the openness and underlying sense of joy I sense within the culture here is quite refreshing.
Personally i like what appears to me as the natural acceptance and welcoming nature of the culture and the people.

Foreign voters can not vote at United States of America elections of any kind. I came to this country with a legal, working visa but I could not vote until I became a naturalized US citizen. That took 22 (twenty two) years after I came to work and live here. I have to become a Permanent Resident (Green Card) first (10 years), then wait 5 years before I could applied to US citizenship. Process took 7 years, so there you are.

With our aging population you had better hope that immigrants are allowed to become citizens. The discussions about how they are taking over our jobs is ridiculous because Americans are not interested in doing that low-salaried bottom of the barrel work. Crops died in Georgia and Alabama when there was an exodus of illegal workers. Everyone, with the exception of Native Americans, are descendants of immigrants. Actually, Native Americans are descended from immigrants too. Their ancestors did not evolve here. People have moved from place to place throughout history. But it is also true that circumstances change over time. Just because your ancestors did something 100 years ago does not automatically mean that it's okay for you to do that thing, or that you can't write laws to prevent other people from doing it. The argument that "oh our ancestors immigrated so we can't object to people immigrating illegally now" makes about as much sense as "oh, my ancestors committed crimes so now I can't support having any criminal law."

I have a capacity to understand that Trump is expressing what many people, white, black, brown, yellow, and red, are unable, or feel constrained, to say, feel, or even think, if we take "right thinking" (Mao's term for what we call political correctness as one way the left seeks to stifle opinion different than their agenda. I also recognize that he will not probably win (just at Obama was not going to win in 2007-2008, according to HRC supporters), but in his expressions, I, as a native born (not anchor baby, not illegal immigrant) citizen, expect some level of border/immigration enforcement. Unless we have the rule of law, I can see anarchy, considering what is happening with the crisis in Europe.
